cozy tap room and dining room with delicious food

By Sara P |

I love this restaurant for its great, hearty and homestyle dishes. Try the burgers or steaks for a treat, and don't miss the French Onion Soup!

This is a neat, dark restaurant. The food was delicious, but again, don't make it down to the Highlands often.

Great Food & Service

By KenTennis |

Four of us had great meals on Sunday night. The Prime Rib, the Rib Eye, the Grouper & the Crab cakes were all perfectly prepared. The manager talked to us & made us feel welcome. We were dressed casually and it was appropriate. Entrees were in the mid $20's and included a salad and a side. We'll definitely return.

I'll call it the restaurant down under.

By Gfrostross |

Fantastic setting! Great steaks! You'll definitely be nice and full when you leave here. It's in a great location, and it's great dining experience. The prime rib is phenomenal!

Visited twice this year...

By Kermit L |

Visited twice this year, unfortunately a bit dissapointed with steaks, although great flavor a bit overdone

Underground (literally) classic

By AmyKatherineAB |

Never had a bad meal. Classic cocktails with friendly service. You will find the entrance on the sidewalk next to Fontaine's right on the corner of N. Highland. You will take the steps down to the bar/restaurant area. The no longer allow smoking which is great, b/c there is no ventilation being it's underground. I don't eat red meat, but my husband orders steak and enjoys it. Overall, good food, fair price, and a nice/different atmosphere.

Roaches Joined Us For Dinner!

By Sonya K |

OMG we( my family) and I visited Highland tap on Friday and never again! We sat in the first booth to the right of the hostess and when the waiter brought out food out the roaches came out as well. I was sitting on the end and my daughter next to me on the right and she said mom look to your right and there were roaches coming out of the top of the booth (not sure if they smelled the food and thought lets go to dinner). It was as if it was a nest of they they just kept coming. We all jumped up and she and I grabbed our purses to check to see if any roaches were in them and I was checking my back to make sure none were on me since the were right next to my head. When we showed the waiter he said oh we will move you over here and I said no we are not eating anything else in this place. Not sure if it was the owner or manager however he came over and asked what was the problem and I said roaches look he then said holy #&#@ and started killing the roaches with his hand WTH..... We ended up eating Krispy Creme donuts for dinner as we could see what was going on in the kitchen. Sick to my stomach!!!!!!! I wish I had thought to take a picture however I was shocked and could not think about anything but getting out of there!!!!

Still great food and service

By jackandsuetravel |

Went to Highland Tap in Virginia Highlands many times over the years before we moved away. Just came back and visited - both the food and service are still wonderful. Everything was so fresh and our steaks were perfectly cooked. The prime rib was so tender and we thought the vegetables were cooked exactly right. Good sized portions as well. Big bar area with lots of tv's as well for watching sports. Right in the center of a great neighborhood of Atlanta to browse and shop in.

Need a manager

By happyflyer45 |

Dropped by for lunch, burger and fries/rings. Burger ok, fries/rings some of the best. But the service was awful and slow. It’s not they were busy, mostly bar customers it appeared. A good manager would know lunch customers usually have somewhere to go next. Don’t bother if you’re on a schedule.

Friday Night Vibe in Atlanta

By Jerry L |

We went here for dinner around 9:30 on a Friday night. The place was full but not jam-packed. Nice mixed crowd of what seemed like happy regulars. We got a booth with no wait. Don't let the word "Tap" mislead you. Looking around, not many people were drinking much of the literally dozens of beers on tap. A martini or boulevardier seemed to be the drink of choice. We chose boulevardiers. And they were freely flowing! We ordered grilled snapper sandwiches with mixed French fries and onion rings. Everything prepared just right. Wonderful service. And a great vibe that I'm learning Atlanta is really good for. Fun people having a fun time. Definitely will be back.

Great burgers and steaks.

By kevinlorijones |

The burgers are juicy and the steaks are cooked to order. The onion rings are mighy fine too. Whether you sit at the bar or table the service is great.

Good Experience

By Jim P |

The Tap has a great location and good feeling about it, much as I experienced in British pubs while living in London some years ago.. The food was quite good (and much better than British pub food in the 80's).

the Restaurant Down Under

Highland Tap has been around forever and is a Neighborhood gem. Saturday or Sunday Brunch are a must try and always order the Bloody Mary.

Good Food, Interesting Atmosphere

By Garypl |

I took 3 business colleagues to the Highland Tap on a Sunday evening for dinner. Located in the Virginia Highland area of Atlanta, which is full of interesting cafes and restaurants, many of which have open air seating. The Tap does not and is located in what appears to be a basement of a building. Atmosphere reminded me of a typical neighborhood bar in my native Chicago, kind of dark inside due to no windows and there is a bar area where you first enter and a larger dining area further inside. Service was very good. We had an attentive server who was a bit gruff, but also joked with us - an interesting mix! Nice variety of draft beers that are served in large mugs - apparently one size only. Food was very good - special of the day was a thick pork chop with mushroom and onion gravy for $23 - two in my party ordered the special and said it was excellent. I had chopped steak with mashed potatoes that was really good. Last person ordered Southern Fried Chicken and he said it was very good, however it was made with boneless chicken tenders instead of whole chicken pieces - something that we did not see in the description in the menu. The coffee they served was probably the best coffee I have ever tasted! I am going to call them to see what brand they serve - it was that good. Overall, there were many interesting grilled menu items, but I felt the prices were on the high side from what I expected for the area and type of restaurant. Prices range from $11 for a burger or chicken sandwich to $25-$38 for steaks or prime rib. I believe there are only 4 or 5 entrees on the menu that are under $20. I expect the quality of all the food to be very good based on what we ordered, it's just that the prices were higher than what we expected when we walked in the door. There is no dedicated parking, so you have to drive around the surrounding residential neighborhood to find a parking space. We found a spot on the next street over, but it wasn't too crowded on a Sunday evening around 7:00 - might be a problem on a Friday or Saturday evening to find a parking spot close by. My overall opinion - I really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere and will go back again, but I will go during the week to avoid parking hassles.

Nice old fashioned neighborhood steak place

By NJDad_Neal |

Some very mixed reviews of this place, but I liked it. I love steak and have eaten in some of the best steak places, both fancy and not-so-fancy. This place is in the not fancy category. We had a lot of apps that were very good, for example, the fried oysters, the Carpaccio, and crab cakes were all memorable. I ordered the NY Strip and added "oscar style" to the steak which was a bit of creamy sauce and some pieces of crab. The steak was worth the money, the oscar add-on for $9 was not. The other guys seemed to enjoy their steaks. Martinis are very large and good. Wine list is a little limited, but not bad for a neighborhood joint. I would go back if I was in the neighborhood.

Great martinis and burgers

By Cindykincaid201 |

I lived in Altanta in 1990-1991 and used to frequent this place. It has not changed at all. Just wanted to go back again while we were visiting Atlanta and it did not dissapoint. We had the lemon drop martinis and shared their big burger. It was plenty for us (my husband and me). The only problem was that parking was a little difficult. We didn't want to valet the car because we had a expensive saxophone and luggage in the back of our SUV. In the parking lot behind the restaurant they would not let us park without giving them the keys to our car...we didn't like that!! Finally found a place in front with a meter. We paid $4 to park for 2 hours. That was fine. Go folks...it's in the Virginia Highland area of Atlanta...a really fun area of the city to visit. Lots of great restaurants in the area. Blind Willies for blues music is right up the street.

Late Dinner 8/30/2014

By yankee-peddler |

Arrived for dinner at 9 pm and was promptly seated in a booth. The place was lively, vibrant, and moderately noisy. Our party of 4 was still able to carry on conversation without difficulty. 3 in our party ordered prime rib and one ordered blue cheese encrusted grill rib eye. Starting the meal with french onion soup and Caesar salad. All the entrees were outstanding and properly prepared. The au gratin potatoes that were ordered by 2 people were just fair. The baked potato was skin salted and fantastic. The service was excellent and provided by what appeared to be a very experienced staff - 30/40/50 something in age. At the end of the meal there was no room for dessert. If my travels take be back to Atlanta I would dine again here with hesitation. Had the potatoes au gratin been much better I could have given 5 stars.

Very Good Food

By C M |

Late dinner with my husband. Food was good, wait staff were attentive. Bar is separate through swinging doors. A band was playing rock. Fun place for a Saturday night.

Wonderful

By Jim M |

The food, drinks and the service were exceptional. I love the atmosphere of the Highland Tap. It has some of the best calamari and fresh cut onions rings. Will be back.

friends and food

best hidden steak house in atlanta. great for business and pleasure.great local hang out. I went with crowde of 11, we had steak, drinks and great time. $650.00.

Do not rely on past experience as consistency is now an issue

By AtlantaGlobetrotter |

We used to patronize this restaurant often because the food was good. This has changed. The food is not as good. Actually, the menu has fewer items, which would lead one to think that they are concentrating on what they do best. Not the case. The staff are still welcoming. The martinis are smaller but still good. But really, how could the Tap go down so fast. Hope they can turn it around.

Old School Steakhouse & Bar

By ATL_Jacket |

The Highland Tap is the best lunch spot in Atlanta. They have amazing food specials and a great atmosphere. I especially love their burgers, meatloaf, and pot roast; but anything they cook on their wood-fired grill is amazing. They also have excellent classic martinis and manhattans, which are always served with a sidecar. Overall, this is one of the best classic bars in Atlanta and an amazing place to hang out.

Good Place for a Steak/ Lot's of Different type Beer's!

By Jimmy H |

Food was good! Service was Fair!Crystal did the best she could!! She had alot of Tables! Bit maybe I was in a Hurry! Overall she was professional and knew the menu! Appetizers were also good! A little pricey!

Superb consistency

By Andrew R |

The burgers are ALWAYS cooked to perfection! Tuesday specials are a fantastic deal. Great bar service just a really well run delightful place.

Retro, reliable, comfortable as anything

By jack770 |

This basement pub harkens back to another era, in a pleasing way. The menu is solid and the service is warm and attentive. Granted, we were there at a very slow lunch, but I had the sense that this neighborhood mainstay is such for a reason. Good prices as well and I look forward to investigating what I hear are the packed evenings.

Great Meal, Great Service

By Chris H |

I recently traveled to Atlanta with a friend. We were looking for a good steak without having to rob a bank to pay for it. We found it in Highland Tap. I decided on the prime rib and it was excellent. It is served with some of the best horseradish sauce I have ever had. The service was very good. I drink wine but I don’t know much about it. I asked the waiter what he suggested and he was very helpful. I highly recommend Highland Tap to anyone traveling to Atlanta. I know I’ll be back.

Fantastic food and atmosphere

By Jessica C |

My friends and I found this place on trip advisor and thought we’d give it a shot. The food was amazing, the restaurant itself is very unique and cozy. Great for a date or night out with friends.

Great Steak

By NGRN75 |

Visited here with some old friends. We had drinks , appetizers and steaks. My husband had the tomahawk 32oz steak. You could cut it with a fork. I had the steak oscar and it was simply excellent. One friend had the prime rib and it melted in your mouth. My other friend had the blackened grouper and he said it was excellent. We tried a few beers and all were good. Service was good

So Disappointed

By Ronald W |

I was just there for NYE. I took my best friends knowing that it would be awesome. I was so embarrassed that it was not even good. I ordered the medium filet ($38+) expecting a melt in your mouth filet. I had a hard time cutting it with the big steakhouse knife. My friends ordered the ribeye. Their's was good, but it was so fatty that they left hungry. I was embarrassed by the quality of the food so I insisted on some desserts to go. We got the desserts home and I was so surprised that the restaurant had not made any attempt to garnish them. It was a piece of pie and wax paper in the take home box. We paid the same price for the desserts as the dine-in customers, we should have received the product for take home desserts. I am sad to say, I will not come to HL Tap again. I am going to have to find another place to spend $100 a person.

Food is good, not great

By manu4t |

You are basically venturing into a basement to eat, but short of that, this place is pretty daggone cool. Food is good, not great, but the prices are great, not good.

The Highland Tap = thumbs up!

By TravelingManAtlanta |

they did ban smoking at the bar!!! (about time) if you stayed away because of the smoke - time to return!

Best Brunch !

By Renee S |

Fantastic brunch menu! The rest of the menu also looks delish, just couldn't not try the filet/crab cake Benedict! Spectacular!

Good steak house

By rl8587 |

The price is right for this steak house. So many times I go to very expensive steak houses and the steak tastes like crap. It was beautifully done here. I like my steak well done, ordered it here with no problem. The smoke flavor was amazing. We ordered a variety of sides au gratin potatoes, mac and cheese and the grilled veggies. All very delicious. The veggies were lightly grilled minimal flavorings added, just the way we like it. My biggest complaint they call themselves a martini house and they had what felt like 2 options on a cocktail list... that was confusing and disappointing. Also when it came to order dessert or a after dinner cocktail. I asked for a chocolate martini and they came out with a piece of chocolate cake... I'm not sure how the two were confused but we decided to just eat the cake and head out. The cake was very delicious! If we ever visit Atlanta again, we would consider going back!

Unappreciated patron.

By Alvaro M |

Used to eat there almost every other week and last week, who we assumed was a new manager (we had never seen him before) kicked us out after we complained for not having a table after he let a person who showed up, under her admission late, and even though, we had made a reservation. He was rude and treated us disrespectfully.

Cozy Dinner

By Vacaywarrior |

We went here for dinner. It's downstairs . It's a cozy, Dimly lit bar Service was great. The food was really good. We ate oyster Rockefeller, prime rib and blackened grouper sandwich. Definitely a keeper.

Steakhouse, Speakeasy, And So Much More!

By scbleo |

Superb hidden gem underground with the speakeasy vibe! This is so much more than just a steakhouse! We were extremely pleased and thankful to our fellow Yelpers for finding this great local spot just blocks from our son's home. Situated on a corner of busy N. Highland Avenue, important for you to know there is free valet parking behind the restaurant. No need to worry about meters and that's if you even find a spot. Great parking lot will be used by us, next time. The atmosphere is relaxed, intimate and blends well for a group of friends to laugh and hang out at the huge "U" shaped bar, to watch a game, or to sit in the dining area. The service is fantastic! Hostess greets you and quickly welcomes you like you were missed. Granted, we had reservations but sure was nice to be awaited with a smile. There are booths around the perimeter and then tables throughout. I loved the booth for you get to enjoy the pre-dinner drinks and conversation with your guests. The drinks run around $9.00 each, with a wide selection of wines, beers and a full bar to offer you any special drink you might like. I tried the Absolute Pear Vodka with Pineapple juice and it was great over ice. Nice and smooth made it perfect before the dinner. Best part of this varied menu is there are regular and smaller portions available. Makes it great for those that don't eat too much or those seeking a warm appetizer with perhaps a soup. Then if you were like us in the mood for a great steak, you will not be disappointed. The flavor from the grill and tenderness was beyond our expectations. The loaded potatoes was not my favorite, for some how the taste of the cheddar cheese was a bit too much for the size of the potatoes, and I love cheese. It did not deter me in the least, for the steak and appetizers were that good. The wedge salad was fresh and they were kind enough to split it for us in the kitchen. Truly exceptional service. Derek the manager, was visible and involved. He clearly cares to make your experience superb and his staff enjoy working there for their service reflects that loud and clear. Truly a local gem and I can honestly say that the next morning, my husband and I were still talking about how delicious our meal was the night before.

Fantastic Experience

By CharlestowneArmory |

Was recommended by a friend when we were traveling through ATL. First impression was the great atmosphere as you go underground from street level to a neat little spot. My friend recommended the Prime Rib & it was fantastic. I didn't even attempt to eat my side because I knew I needed as much room as possible to finish the main attraction. The martinis are highly renowned & for very good reason. The service was impeccable & the food came out in very consistent timing. Oh yeah, the prices are great for food of this quality. Highly recommend 2X. Will absolutely be back.

forgotten gem in the neighborhood

By rai473 |

I hadn't eaten here for many years. I had forgot about it. After going out to dinner I'm not sure why. Our food was really good. The service was good. The waitress was really friendly and sweet. I like that the vegetables come with the meat and you don't have to pay extra for the vegetables. The pie is also good. I noticed they have food specials every night of the week. I will be back.

Attentive Bartender

By TimKathy1 |

We stopped in for a couple of drinks prior to a dinner across the street. We were celebrating a birthday - the bartender went out of his way to attend to our requests.

A Great Pub

By David B |

The best shrimp tacos I have ever tasted period! My first time there and the young lady behind the bar was as nice as could be, the service was fast, and the food fantastic. Nice comfortable place

Still Kicking Even During the Pandemic

By TombRaider55 |

This has always been an old go to restaurant for me. I was so happy to see that it started to open early for in person dining. They are known for their steaks, prime rib, appetizers, desserts, and martinis. Off the beaten path a little in the Virginia-Highlands area of Atlanta.

Nice Afternoon Stop

By Rkamts |

We were wandering around Virginia Highlands and decided to check this place out. The bartender took care of us and kept us entertained for a couple hours. He said his Bloody Mary's were the best around and he was right!!

Prime rib was completely flavorless I have had better prime rib at an after wedding dinner

By Ed P |

I had prime rib which was billed as the best in Atlanta. Take my word, do not believe the hype. I have no problem paying a lot for a great meal with emphasis is on great. The meal was not great or even good. The waitress did a fine job, the meal was on the table within ten minutes and the portion was 16 oz I ordered a 12 oz this was an over sight or generous on their part, with this said 16 oz of nothing, no seasoning, no flavor, nothing it was literally like chewing warm solidified water. The potato was good, it was well cooked and portion size was wa generous. I will not return. My recommendation is unless things in the kitchen drastically change or this was a one off event I would avoid it.

Never Fails

By Richard |

We have been visiting this restaurant for 10 years and it has never failed us. Service and food are number one and we have never had any negative experiences. The location and building just enhances the experience. We always order a steak and this time my wife had the prime rib and I had the dry rub aged KC strip. Both were cooked to perfection. This is a staple for us every time we visit Atlanta and will continue to be.

Christmas Eve

By Louisville55 |

We are visiting our son and decide to go to this restaurant that we have read good reviews. Park our car on the main road, and ask the elderly gentlemen who greeted us in the restaurant and our waiter Michael , if it was alright to park there (as it said that we did not have to pay on holidays). They said they did not know. Did they tell us about the free parking across the road that was complimentary for this evening...no. (Thank you Atlanta for the $35 ticket on Christmas Eve ... It is not the money, which I would absolutely be honored to give the $35 to a family in need whose children receive nothing this year). Now to the meal. My filet with Gorgonzola cheese was awesome, as was my husband's seafood fettuccine meal and likewise the blue ribbon onion rings. Now comes to the awful part...the Queen Cut prime rib! We want to know , did they microwave this piece of meat? Did Michael, our waiter, ask us once, how we enjoyed our meal? Unfortunately the answer is negative. Because of these last couple of details, I cannot recommend this restaurant. When we left the restaurant, I mentioned it the maitre d, but he fluffed it off. I am sure that the restaurant will not care about my comments, but I had to vent. Merry Christmas...anyway that I can give that $35 to a charity, instead of the parking ticket please.

Great selection of beers

By BRIAN B |

Annoying sports on screens that can be ignored if you just want to talk and drink. We were here before going elsewhere for dinner so didn't sample food choices. The help was most pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable the beers were just right.

oh my goodness gracious

By michelle w |

This place was much better than I had excpected. We went for New years even dinner, I had the famous burger with blue cheese and fries/onion rings. My husband had the blackened ssteak and practically licked his plate. For desert I got the Creme Brule! delicious, but a bit pricey!

Less pleasant than usual food quality.

By TombRaider55 |

A friend and I were there for a quick dinner before a movie. The service was excellent (thanks to Olivia). The Carpaccio was excellent. The drinks were perfect as always. But, the Bearnaise Burger was overcooked, tough, and had way too much hickory smoke flavoring added.

Good vibes!

By Bluegill-travels |

My wife and I stopped in for a visit. We didn't get offered a seat and had one drink and left!!!! Beer was nice and cold but felt left out!!!

A Gem in Virginia Highlands

By TheLesanes |

My husband and I purchashed a $20 coupon for $40 worth of food/drinks on www.halfoffdepot.com. We did this on a whim. We often eat in Virginia Highlands but had never gone to Highland Tap. When we walked in, we loved the atmosphere. It reminded us of an Irish Pub. We also enjoyed the service and the drinks. Markie makes a great Pink Lemonade Martini. Even more spectacular was the crab cake dinner and the special (Filet topped with lobster). The bleu cheese mashed potatoes were scrumptious. Our bill was only $21. While we got a great deal, what was more important was our find of this awesome restaurant. We will return!

Excellent!

By Bob S |

My wife and I had the prime rib.. very easy the best I've had in years! Can't wait to come back and try the ribeye steaks! And the Creme Brulee .. OMG!!!

BEST BURGER IN ATLANTA. THERE, I SAID IT, I CHALLENGE YOU TO DISAGREE

By R&G-Opine |

The Higland Tap is really good at a lot of things. Atmosphere: Check. Old school vibe: Check. Huge martinis with a tiny side car carafe on ice: Check. But the reason the locals are down in that basement is the meat. The steaks are simply awesome, and done the old school steak house way. However, if you want the best bang for you buck, get the Tap Burger (or even a better value, the mini Tap Burger..same thing just smaller). If you don't agree that it's the best burger in Atlanta, then you are just wrong..plain wrong. Myself and a crack team of other burger experts have measured the Tap Burger up against other famous burgers in Atlanta and other big cities. It consistently gets universal approval and adoration from all who try. This is the original gourmet burger, before all the high end burger joints came around, but most don't know, because the Highland Tap doesn't toot their own horn enough. IF they won't I will. Go eat this burger.

Fabulous steak - very attentive staff

By jmyers6670 |

Despite living in Atlanta, I had not been to Highland Tap until this past week-end but I was in the mood for steak and had heard good things about it. Four of us went on a busy Saturday night and had a fun experience. Staff was very attentive and eager to make certain we had a good experience. We all had steak and without exception, we agreed they were absolutely perfectly cooked, tender and tasty. The restaurant is very "pub" like and is obviously a popular gathering place for locals. Parking can be a little tight in the Va Highlands area but the valet lot is usually available. Definitely worth a visit and we will go back.

Excellent steak, good service

By WileyPost |

We were a group of four and we all ordered the filets. Three of the four were cooked perfect. I thought my steak was awesome. We had spinach dip and crab cakes for appetizers and the crab cakes were excellent. The service was good and the atmosphere fun. I would go a again.

Great bar underground!

By TXMARTINS |

With a vintage brick bar underground this is a great place to tuck away in a dark corner for a great conversation! Delightful staff & desserts with great cocktails or go for a full meal with steak burgers or a great cut of red meat. Family friendly & clearly popular with the neighborhood locals.

Great find

By Laura K |

Great drinks great service! You need to go downstairs and you'll be happy with what you find. A cool low-key nice bar. We did not eat here but others were eating around us and the food looked good. I would definitely check it out

It was not a good experience

By Passenger29837320215 |

I took my husband to this restaurant for his birthday,. I ordered baby back ribs. They were very fatty with no smoky taste. My husband ordered the rib eye, medium. It was tough, but did have a good flavor. We also had calamari and it was very chewy. I was very disappointed.

Old VIHI stand by!

What a great restaurant!!!! OMG!

By AJ F |

Phenomenal value for the money considering food quality, price, portion size, really cool atmosphere, and friendly, attentive staff! Highly recommended!! 5 Stars ++++

Great Burger, Bad Deal

By Nunya |

We have walked by Highland Tap for years without going in because it looked like just a bar, and it didn't look like our scene. On the advice of a friend, we decided to try the burger. It was awesome! The steak burger is a truly great burger, perfectly done; the bun was perfectly toasted; the tomato jam was exactly the right condiment. But here's where the story takes a turn. We happened to walk in on "half-price burger" night. We didn't know about it ahead of time, it just happened. We felt lucky, and instead of splitting a burger, we decided to get two. Same price, right? And here, you may be thinking, "those cheapskates! No wonder the waitstaff was snooty!" So, ok, it's hard for the waiter to know that we would have tipped him for two meals even if we had ordered one and split it. We are very conscientious about that, but the odd thing was, that the "half-price steak burger" didn't include the tomato jam. And the waiter told us it was because the burger was half price. Where I'm from, you don't offer an item for half-price item and then change it because you can't actually afford to offer it for half the price. That is disingenuous. And as a waiter, you don't act like the customer is wasting your time, even if your management puts you in the awkward position of cutting the condiments when they cut the price. We would have paid for the burger, but we don't want to get snooty service, no matter how good the "deal" is.

Good for gluten free, great prime rib

By Jean H |

No problem for gluten free. Excellent cocktail, easy parking, great prime rib. Excellent service. Not a fancy place, but really good.

good meal

By Keith S |

The food was quite good. I had the surf and turf (6 oz filet and lobster meat) and it was very good, just not a lot of the lobster meat. Our table all enjoyed their meals. The server was good and made good suggestions on meals/

Home of the Tomahawk!

By Germán N |

Excellent place to go for beef! I had the fillet crusted with peppercorns that was cooked to perfection. Side dishes are southern favorites and many to choose from. I recommend ordering different and sharing with your dinning companions. A member of our party ordered the Tomahawk, which is not for the faint of heart. When it arrived at the table all the cell phone cameras came out.

Quality Food at Highland Tap

By ATLBUBBLES |

Food is great. Try to go on a Thursday when the special is homemade chicken pot pie. Yum! It's a place you'll want to go back to ---- I do.

Quality tradition

By alsally1139 |

It is rare that when all seven of us liked every dish we ordered. Highland Tap has a tradition of serving quality food. The martinis were excellent, the hamburgers were juiced and well cooked. My grouper sandwich was the best I ever had. The dessert was perfect.

Disappointing

By marshat827 |

I love great steak, great wine, great service....I spend money accordingly to ENJOY my dinner. Prime Rib and aujus lacked flavor! Clam chowder was not thick n creamy but taste - just 'ok'. Expected good service...but had to beg waiter for his attention and it wasn't even busy! Table was dirty and booth seat had crumbs in it when we sat down! Watched each individual come in after us...water was opened and poured in a glass...our waiter just put the bottle on table...didn't bother to pours they did for all other patron! We watched him package others leftovers to go...he just dropped off the container to us. Didn't even ask if we wanted another glass of wine! Sunday evening dinner was just barely ok....and for the price paid = truly disappointing. Notified management of our experience...they said "sorry" No offer of anything here! Discount for future visit - complimentary dessert, beverage - NOTHING! I truly think you should think twice before spend $100 on dinner for 2 here!!

Finding this little restaurant in Highland (20 mins drive from Buckhead) was great. Valet parking to the rear this restaurant offered a great and varied menu of steaks and fish. There appeared to be many regulars present when we visited which was reassuring. Steaks vary from $22 -$38 , which is fairly typical and the sirloin was perfect at medium rare. Cocktails and a large selection of beers this is a great location for that after office wind down.

Neighborhood Gem w/ best burgers in Atlanta!

By Mike V |

The Highland Tap in Atlanta's Virginia-Highland neighborhood is a gem! Located in the basement level at the epicenter of Atlanta's hip Va-Hi, the Tap has been serving great food and drinks for over 20 years. It's a neighborhood place that also attracts visitors and young adults - the latter especially on Thursday nights. A decent sized bar area with some adjacent booths and the requisite flat screen TVs tuned to the sports stations is always busy. Tom, the night-time bartender has been there over 21 years. In fact, most of the wait staff are veterans - always the sign of a well run establishment. The bar may be Atlanta's version of "Cheers." The pours are generous, there's a good selection of beer and the place has the reputation (deserved) of pouring Atlanta's best martini. The large dining room, with natural stone walls and flocked wallpaper that is reminiscent of a bawdy house, has both tables and booths. The light is kept dim throughout the establishment. The Tap Steakburger is my choice as the BEST burger in Atlanta, and I'm a burger aficionado! Served with or without your choice of several cheeses on a toasted bun with a side of perfectly cooked onion rings - there's none better - even at the "boutique" burger restaurant just across the street. But The Tap is more than a burger joint! the prime rib is to die for, and the Gargonzola encrusted filet is a great steak. This is NOT farm-to-table, so the sides are the requisite fries, baked potato, backed sweet potato and seasonal veggies and also salads. The small loaf of delicious brown bread served before the entree will be quickly devoured. If you are visiting Atlanta and want a really good good steak or burger without the froo-froo, and want to eat where the locals eat, this is your place!

Very good place for steaks.

By like2travel1 |

This is a nice restaurant in an interesting setting, in the cellar of a building. The specialties are prime rib and steaks. We both had the 8oz. filet mignon. The one ordered medium rare was excellent. The one ordered medium (and specifically to be very pink in the middle) was overcooked, but was still OK. Our service was very good. The decor and atmosphere were very nice, adding to our enjoyable evening. Our wines were good with generous amounts in both our glasses. Parking is very convenient with valet parking directly behind the restaurant and an entrance directly from the parking lot to the restaurant. While not outstanding, our food, wine and atmosphere made this a very enjoyable evening and we plan to go here again.

Disappointed

By James S |

6 of us ate at Highland Tap for a birthday celebration. Food was OK, but not more than that. For appetizers we had shrimp cocktail, calamari, spinach and artichoke dip, French onion soup, and escargot. The best of all of those was the bread that came with the dip. My 14 oz ribeye was cooked as ordered, was tender, but without flavor. If it were not for the au jus & béarnaise sauce the steak would have had no flavor. My asparagus were also just OK with bland Hollandaise sauce. The best part of the meal was the au gratin potatoes. Our $12 martinis were very good and larger than normal. Everyone was more than satisfied with the desserts. The brownie with ice cream was wonderful. The creme brûlée and apple pie a'la mode were also just OK. My last meal here about 10 years ago was much different and better with a more elegant clientele. This time the bartenders were wearing shorts and grungy t-shirts. The patrons were dressed like they were eating at a cafeteria. Our server though was very good. I would only return for drinks at the bar. I would not return for dinner.

Great Atmostphere & Bartender

By Michelle B |

The bar was very comfortable as we my friends and I had a choice for regular chairs or barstool chairs at the bar. I have a bad back and appreciated the regular chairs for comfort while still sitting at the bar. Buckley the bartenter is a great guy and a hot rock. We adult beverages were great and we shared a bunch fo appetizers, the best of which was the Shrimp cocktail. We also had onion rings and crab cakes, which were also good, but the shrimp cocktail was better than most. The cocktail sauce was great, the shrimp were very large even for the price and hit the spot. I thought for the price the there should have been more yeild on the onion rings and crabcakes, especially the rings because they are cheap and easy to make. I look forward to eating there for dinner in the future to get an ever better sense of the restaurant portion of the business. Downside was that it was a little dark in the bar area and the prices a bit high, but again, a real gem.

Great Food, not so much wine selection.

By LHEAP |

The steak I had was awesome. Everyone in our group would agree with that comment. They would also agree that the wine list was skimpy for a place that prepares such a mean steak and great sides. Bump up the wine list!

Had not been in years but ended up at the bar with a friend to have dinner and watch the Braves. Sat down and Tom the bartender greeted us right away. He knew my friend as they went to school together years before. She had a glass of wine and I had a beer. As luck would have it we were there on Prime Rib night. Great cuts, cooked to perfection and what a great value. For sure going back for great service food and Braves games!!!

Visited this bar for a quick couple of beers in Feb 2016 . You head down into the depths of this subterranean bar , a dark bar , dark wooden walls but welcoming nonetheless . Beer was reasonable and staff firendly .

This is the loudest restaurant in Atlanta

By Linda M |

I booked a reservation here because it sounded like a neat, neighborhood brew-pub type place with good steaks, based on other reviews. It is popular, no doubt about that. There were scads of people, many of them smoking in the bar. (Hasn't that been outlawed everywhere yet?) We arrived WAY early due to a scheduling conflict and the staff was very helpful in trying to get us into the restaurant earlier, even though they were fully booked. The restaurant is beyond romantic dark... instead close to lights-out dark... and honestly, being underground and with no upholstery or noise barriers of any kind, it was the loudest dining experience of my life. Our party of four literally had to yell at each other. Now, admittedly, our experience was ruined further by a party of young women seated behind us who (our server told us ) had been there 4 1/2 hours drinking and they were screaming with laughter every few minutes. The food (oh right, we came for food) was good, not great, but it truly was impossible to enjoy it. (It is very reasonably priced for Atlanta, however.) Between the stink of smoke and the noise pollution, we were ready to leave as fast as we could. Oh, and the beer selection on tap was a little skimpy, too. I really wanted to like this place and our service was good, but I just can't recommend it for dinner. Drink and a smoke? You'll be happy.

A Gem Down Under

By Liz N |

In the heart of the Virginia Highlands below the sidewalk, this is an intimate restaurant bar where you can meet new friends. With dark lighting and booths in the dining area, this is a great place for both couples and large groups. The menu is so extensive, you would have a difficult time. You must try one of their steak or their original hamburgers. For vegetarians, they have a nice selection of salads. But sorry, the steaks won me over.

One of the Best Unknown Steak Places in ATL

By beargator56 |

Plenty of places in Atlanta get higher praise, but Highland Tap is pretty damn good. Busy bar scene on Friday and Saturday night, but it's worth it to have a sit down meal here. Steak. Mmmmmmm

Always great in here!

Went here for dinner and drinks with family. Great beer and wine selection. Mixed drinks are great as well. The atmosphere is always fun, especially when it’s cold and rainy outside. I ordered the prime rib and it was outstanding. Melted in my mouth. Everyone at table really enjoyed their meals. Great place.

Great lunch spot

By Sweet P of Georgia |

We ate a late lunch here last Friday. Great deal for a patty melt and fries. Burger was delicious. Not a bad price for four to eat. Our server in the bar section was excellent and informative. It's an interesting subterranean dining experience. It was quiet and cool. A nice break from all the noise above ground.

Epic Fail

By TombRaider55 |

I've been going here for years and it comes and goes. I even supported it through the pandemic. This past weekend was particularly disappointing. First, we waited 30 minutes to be seated and only got seated because I inquired again with the hostess. Second, we waited 35 minutes to be recognized by the server. It never happened; so we finally just left. Curiously, I recognized none of the usual waitstaff.

Disappointing Intown Experience

By Passport35677166354 |

After 1.5 hrs we were asked by Gil (manager) to give the table up. I have to wonder if our party had included a male if such an offensive request would have been made. We ordered 4 drinks and an app on an early Wednesday evening reservation. I have lived in VaHi/ Morningside for decades and I have never been treated so poorly anywhere intown. We will scratch The Tap off our list. So disappointing.

Don't judge a book by its cover

By Lynda22901 |

When my adult children brought us here I wasn't too sure from the outside but inside is rustic, warm and inviting, like an historic tavern. We all enjoyed the bread followed by our choices of various cuts of beef cooked to perfection with a variety of sides as well as salads with a variety of tasty dressings prepared in house. An attractively priced wine selection rounded out my needs quite nicely. There was no room for desert but the serving of cheesecake I witnessed being served would have met the needs of our party of six! Highlands is definitely a desirable neighborhood. When we returned to our van, parked on a side street and around the corner and a block from the restaurant, we discovered we'd left the rear sliding door open on the sidewalk side of the car for the entire time we were dining. Not one thing had been disturbed during our absence. Would definitely return to Highlands upon our next visit to Atlanta.

Tasty And Perfect.

By theresecallahan2002 |

My brother and I decided to have our dinner here during our short stay in Atlanta. I ordered the salmon BLT, which was incredibly delicious. So were the onion rings I ordered with. My brother savored the prime rib and baked potato. But the best part was the friendliness of the staff. Upon entering, I was helped down the stairs by a man who saw the trouble I was having. A waitress advised us to try the dining room instead of the bar, since it gets noisy at this time of day. And Gil, our server, saw to it that our meals met our expectations. They did, and actually exceeded them. So I highly recommend this pub to any visitors in the Atlanta area.

Very Interesting Spot-Been around a long time.

By Rob from Atlanta |

This place has a really awesome grill for steaks, etc. Wonderful hickory flavor. The steak oscar is out of this world. You can get a single portion or a double. We often get the double and share. Watch out for the martini's they are the real deal. This is the only place I drink martinis and it is because they do such an amazing job with them. Note: This place is in a basement. A real basement below the street out front. Whatever view there is is painted on the walls or sitting at a table. If you are looking for new, modern, etc. this is not the place for you. I would say pricing is moderate. It is not a cheap place to eat but worth the money.

Great Steaks in a "Speakeasy" Environment

By Jay B |

Highland Tap is simply one of the coolest restaurants I've ever frequented. The place is "downstairs" off of the street and feels like you are entering a "speakeasy" from Prohibition days. The place is dark, with lots of wood paneling. A very cool vibe! They offer great wines and a full bar, with draft beers and specialty cocktails. The menu features steaks and prime rib meals to die for. The wedge salad and mashed sweet potatoes are among many great sides. Located in the eclectic Virginia Highlands area, this is one of Atlanta's true treasures.

Great food and atmosphere

By funat60plus |

I know this is noted for steaks, but we had the pecan trout and crab stuffed grouper. So delicious. We had a fantastic server. It was our anniversary and we were given a great piece of Key Lime Cake. Casual or dressy - so come as you are. There was Prom group coming in as we were leaving so get there early. The do take reservations. Will definately try the steak if we return but loved the fish and seafood.

Reliable steak house

By Bert R |

This neighborhood favorite is an underground gem, reliable through the years as a place for a steak and a rich and flavorful menu of tried and true steakhouse staples. The usual cuts are the main attractions, and sides are of the broccoli with hollandaise, potatoes au gratin, and iceberg lettuce wedge smothered in bleu cheese dressing variety. We ordered an appetizer of escargot en croute and were encouraged to use our bread to enjoy the remaining buttery sauce. Rich and delicious, old school and unapologetic. Prices are on the higher side of the other restaurants in the Virginia-Highlands area because of the nature of the offerings (steak is more expensive than hamburgers and pizza), but certainly much more moderate than Buckhead. If you can set aside concerns about calories, cholesterol, and eating cattle, Highland Tap will satisfy.

Consistantly Great!

By Wedding Woman |

We have been eating here for years, the food and service has always been consistently great! We always get a steak and the spinach salad is to die for. Great martini's (ask for blue cheese stuffed olives) Highly recommend!

The Server can make ALL the difference

By Gary B |

I will say at the outset that I've eaten at the Highland Tap once before and I thought the experience was very, very good. This might just an example of a mediocre server experience vs. a rockstar server experience. On my previous experience, our server was awesome! She joked with us, she was professional, she took great care of us and everything that came to our table was spot on. Unfortunately, that was not the case on my second visit. Our server was like a robot. If he was a spot-on robot that might be ok, but a great deal of what came to our table was wrong. When ordering, he spewed on back-to-back questions while apparently not listening to the response. I ordered a slightly dirty martini. The questions were reeled off. One question..."regular olives or feta cheese stuff olives" (why would anyone drinking a martini as for stuffed olives???). I said "regular olives". When the drink arrived, the olives were feta stuffed. I called it to the attention of the server. His response...he brought me a cocktail pick of regular olives on a napkin to replace the feta stuffed olives. Problem? There was feta cheese chunks throughout the martini. When I asked for a new martini because I didn't want feta chunks in my martini, I was met with disdain. There were 5 of us dining. The food was somewhat lackluster. I ordered the 8 ounce Filet Mignon. It was tough. The chicken 2 of our guests ordered was not well received. If our server had not been so abrupt, we might have asked to rectify the chicken situation, but we really felt the server would have cared less.

Great service, Neat atmosphere ... ok food

By Carole B |

This was our first time eating here and we met friends for dinner. I ordered the New York Strip and it had quite a bit of fat on it - as did my husband's ribeye... not the kind of fat you want to eat though. My husband said the Brussel sprouts were delicious. I ordered a baked potato, it was still a bit "icy" in the middle. We split the Wedge, which was really good and those bacon bits were super YUMMY! (I saw many people ordering the steak burger, which was the special, I wish I would have gone that route.) Our server was terrific and I at no time felt rushed. I would go back, this time I would try something different than a steak.

Very good surprise

By mmayhem |

We had lived in Atlanta and never had been to Highland Tap until last weekend. While it seems odd being in a basement and there is no patio, it is an interesting cool place that has been open for over 25 years. To our surprise the food was very good. I had ribs and my wife had a steak, and the steak was great, especially for the very reasonable prices. We enjoyed our dinner and they have a decent wine and beer selection. I would definitely come back and eat here again.

Great food and great service

By RangerBobIsHere |

I love the French Onion soup and prime rib (medium). Ribs (on special) were very good. Use OpenTable if you are going on a weekend to ensure you don't have to wait. Virginia Highlagds is a great place to walk around at night if the weather is nice. Another food favorite is the filet, burger and French Dip.

Good bar and food one step above what would be expected

By KenGuthrie |

Excellent place to go for reasonably priced food and beer. Definitely a step about your typical bar and frequented by people who appreciate a nice clean and fun establishment without the noise you would possibly expect.

Highland Tap: Cozy basement bar/restaurant with very good food

By RandWise |

We had a great meal. The peach glazed grilled chicken salad and the trout with grits and brussels sprouts were both excellent and delicious. I would go back, but maybe next time sit further from the bar (not sure how typical it is, but there was a large group next to us celebrating a birthday--before they arrived, things were a little less raucous). I liked the downstairs bar ambience: it does seem like a cozy place to meet friends or celebrate a birthday.

Brunch experience

Just stopped in here by chance for Sunday brunch. The menu was good, but the service left a bit to be desired. Typical huge american portions!

Fun atmosphere; good food; attentive service

By Carol E |

Joined friends here for dinner. It was a loud atmosphere in the bar. Felt old school. I ordered a ribeye and it was cooked as i requested. It was a nice large cut (14 oz). I had a loaded baked potato for my side. Really good. Had a caesar salad. It was okay. It was large. We also tried dessert. The chocolate mousse cake was fabulous. Very rich.

Reason it's been around since the 80's

By Michael K |

Great drinks and food. My wife's double martini was a nice surprise and done perfectly as was my Old Fashion. Solid all around. Service was great and the food well prepared. Only downside was it was loud (it is in a basement) and one of the sides was late in arriving at the table (server comped it). Over all would go back.

Paleo choices ordered on Zifty

By TravelisHeaven |

If you live in Atlanta and use Zifty, you might have noticed that the Paleo choices are limited. We ordered the steak burger (which sadly only comes w fries and onion rings...would much prefer Brussel sprouts or spinach!!) and the filet. The filet is good, not great, this isn't Ruth's Chris, or Rathbuns, then again those places don't do take-put, never mind delivery...though I wish they did. Either way, for a quick Paleo meal that we didn't have to make, it was good and we will probably order again. Wish they had sweet potatoes baked. That would be wonderful :)

Some good some not so much

By RFAD |

Well we went to one of our stand by choices for great food and beverages last weekend. We tried the steak sandwich and it was pretty weak. Way to much fat, not a great cut of meat and way under cooked. However our friends had GREAT burgers and the Steak Salad was outstanding. Great value and excellent service made up for the fact that our sandwich was really not good at all. None the less we will always go back as you can't go wrong with Prime Rib special on Monday's and the beer is always cold.

Good vibe and good beer selecion

By Dusten M |

I liked this place, great vibe with a young professional crowd. Beer selection was good featuring lots of good craft beers. We didn't eat so cannot speak about that bi would definitely go back.

Not up to its old standards

By TombRaider55 |

I have been going to Highland Tap for many years and it has had its ups and downs. I visited there with a friend on a Sunday afternoon most recently. We had the old standby: Escargot, Salad, French Onion Soup, Blackened Prime Rib with Crawifsh Tails and Hollandaise, and Martinis. The cheese on the Escargot tasted old, pasty, and not well melted. It actually detracted significantly from this once-proud presentation. The salad was adequate, not great. The French Onion Soup was good. The prime ribs of beef were well cooked and tasty, perhaps with a little too much blackening seasoning. The drinks were good and generous; but frankly not worth their $14+ price tab each. Dinner for two was just under $200 for 2 people. That would have been good for fine-dining. But unfortunately, Highland Tap just didn't live up to that goal on this trip.

Great Atmosphere and Wonderful Food

By Traveler657403 |

We have driven by this restaurant a few times over the years and we finally decided to try them out. I am so glad we did. This is a great little place to have dinner and conversation. This restaurant is in he basement of a building. The lighting was low which gave it the right feel. This is the perfect place for a first date or just a romantic evening for that special someone.Service was great, ever present but not intrusive it was just perfect. Their food is wonderful. Just thinking about the meal makes me hungry. We will definitely be back as we love a good steakhouse. If your looking for a nice place to eat with an old English Pub feel, This is the place for you.

It was ok

By debmak |

First I want to say we had attentive service so that part was at least good. The food was ok not great. We were celebrating our anniversary and wanted to try something different ( usually we go to capital grill or mckendricks or pamapas ) and like this area of Atlanta . Anyways, there were many open tables and people were dressed much more casually than I expected ( tank tops and shorts ? Someone was wearing a baseball cap ) so maybe that should have been a sign for us ? We had the escargot which was pretty tasty. I had a filet with mushrooms and mac and cheese. My steak was flavorful but the Mac and cheese was average . My husband would only say his prime rib was ok and he hardly touched his mashed potatoes . For dessert , we ordered a peanut butter cake something. The cake part was dry and tasted like something they took out of the freezer ( in other words not freshly made ). Over all , I probably wouldn't go back. To many better options in the area .

Great Food, Great Service.

By tanaw |

First of all, you go down a long flight of steep stairs to get to the restaurant. It feels as if you're underground in a 1920's speakeasy. My husband had the ribeye, I had the filet. Both were excellently cooked and had amazing flavor. The au gratin potatoes are homemade and exquisitely made. The braised mushrooms were just right. The place was packed, but our food came quickly, the service was excellent, and our drinks were never empty The bread is also homemade, with honey butter for spreading! Amazing!

Nice Basement Setting

The Tomahawk experience.

By PardonMeBoy |

We chose Highland Tap from a list of steakhouses on a "foodie" website. We wanted a great steak in a classic steakhouse atmosphere and we found it at Highland Tap. You'll find it right at the corner of Virginia Avenue and Highland Avenue in the Virginia-Highlands neighborhood. From the sidewalk, you enter and take the stairs below level into a dark stone and wood speakeasy-like bar area. The dining room is to the right. Steak and martinis are the specialties. We already knew what we wanted...the tomahawk steak which is a 32oz. bone-in ribeye. We also ordered salads and the steak comes with a side item. Tomahwak was cooked over a wood grill medium rare. We split it and still couldn't finish it. So much meat and so juicy. Our expectations were met. A dark neighborhood feel-type setting with white-shirted servers and classic cocktails. Service was excellent. Cocktails were great. I usually reserve Excellent for finer dining but Highland Tap was better than Very Good. Plus, we got out well under what we would usually pay for ordering two steaks dinners with cocktails and wine. Tomahawk!

Not so great anymore

By wordjunkie |

Highland Tap used to be my favorite bar in Atlanta. It's down in sort of a basement, the walls are stone, so it really has a cool underground feel, especially with the dim lighting. But the quality of the food has gone down lately. The steaks aren't as high quality, some portions have gotten smaller. Not a bad place to drink (great martini's) but I won't eat there anymore.

Dingy and mediocre

By Richard M |

We've lived in ATL for over 30 years and I think this place has been here even longer. It's like going into a 60s time warp. Dark and dingy. Food was very mediocre. There are 5 better places within 50 feet of this restaurant in VH.

A Pleasant Experience

By TombRaider55 |

I hadn't visited Highland Tap in a while. I was pleasantly surprised to see familiar faces among the staff. The service was very good. The food was excellent. The appetizer, entree, and dessert were properly prepared and very tasty. Desserts are still decadent. The chocolate peanut butter pie is top notch.

Good steaks, service lacking

By William T |

It's all about the meat at Highland Tap. Tender steaks are always my choice and never fail to deliver. I've always found the food to be good, even as you work your way past entrees to salads and sides. Onion rings are hot and crispy, brussells sprouts, simply steamed and needing only a dash of salt, and loaded baked potatoes all got good reviews. The food has always been dependable. Service is another story. Hostesses are friendly, helpful and accommodating, but wait staff is a mixed bag. I like a server who enjoys their job, but ours seemed to be on auto pilot. There wasn't much interaction with no suggested appetizers or drinks, no helpful suggestions on anything. On a return visit, our waiter was rushing us to the point of being pushy. He had to be sent away four times so we could make our menu selections. Highland Tap is a popular spot with a dark steak cellar atmosphere. You'll likely go away pleased with your meal even with service that doesn't match the food.

Best French Dip and Prime Rib

By Saye506 |

New Year's tradition for my wife and I to pop down the street for dinner. They serve the best French Dip sandwich in Atlanta and the prime rib is perfect. Both smoky and butter-soft. Speak Easy

By Beaux1980 |

The ambiance is great as you enter what feels like a Speak Easy. The food and service were on the verge of excellent as if they used to be but cannot keep up with a modern day high end steakhouse. I really enjoyed my meal, and loved that I ate comfortably and relatively affordably.

Met some friends on an early Saturday night for dinner and drinks. Food was well above average for a pub. Nice selection of local crafts on draft. Well worth the stop.

Food Good- Service was Intrusive

By Dennis L |

Let me start by reviewing service before I review the food. I have been to the Tap many times. Our server was RUDE. He could see that we were engaged in conversation but rudely interrupted us to take our order. We told him we were not ready to order but he kept returning over and over asking for our order. I could possibly understand if the restaurant was crowded but only 4 out of approx. 25 tables were occupied ( we arrived at 6PM for an early dinner). He snatched up plates barely before we had finished. If I return and he is my server, I will leave the restaurant. Now for the food. The mussels special was delicious! Filet of beef was seasoned well and tender. Soup du jour, clam chowder was just OK. Escargot was also a hit. Had it not been for the horrible service, I would have given this establishment a "very good"

Moving in the wrong direction

By TombRaider55 |

The quality of the dinner at Highland Tap has been spotty recently. It used to be a really good place to eat, but has not been up to par recently. My experience tonight continues that trend. The escargot wasn't good, it tasted old. The slow-roasted prime rib was fatty and tough. On a Saturday night, there were only a few tables of customers; so I guess that speaks volumes.

Pleasantly Surprised

By Advourner |

Arrived late into Atlanta and needed a quick bite to eat. Travel companion familiar with the city recommended Highland Tap. I was fairly Skeptical about it when we arrived because the name and appearance suggested to me that it was a bar primarily that served food secondarily. Was I ever wrong. Not only did they serve great food, they had incredible Martinis and other cocktails. The Martinis were served in a carafe that facilitated it's chill throughout its enjoyment.

Excellent Steaks

By Chad D |

Me and my wife ate supper here. I liked how the dining room was located below street level. It was dimly lit and very romantic. I had the ribeye steak and it was probably the best steak I have ever had.

Off Night

By TombRaider55 |

Sometimes Highland Tap has been hit or miss. Tonight was definitely an off night (it was a Sunday). The usual staff didn't seem to be there. The Beef Carpaccio was good as usual. The Martinis were good as usual. The Filet seemed to be a cheaper cut of meat. The Bernaise accompaniment wasn't recognizable. It was really bad. A side of Crawfish Tails also had an "off" flavor, so they weren't finished. I'll probably give Highland Tap a little break before I go back again.

Great Steak Sandwich

By gina m |

my 1st True streak sandwich was so amazing. A New York Strip on a hot toasted freach roll with homemade creamy horseradish sauce and great onion rings, this was an amazing meal!

Why did I not go here before?

By LP552014 |

So sorry that it has taken me almost 30 years in Atlanta before trying this fabulous, comfortable and excellent restaurant. Great for lunch, and I heard brunch is stellar! Sure to be back soon - won't wait another 30 days!

Great gastropub experience. Definitely a keeper.

By DupuisAtlanta |

It's great these gastropubs are coming up where you can have a friendly pub atmosphere, a selection of beers and memorable food. We were pleased that the crowd was mixed- youngsters and middle-aged folks were soaking the energy in. It did get loud so it might be best to make a reservation. They'll give you a table away from the bar. I ordered the spinach salad with warm bacon dressing followed by calamari. They were so good! A friend had the crab cakes and another the small steak with a seasonal beer. Am already planning another visit. Enough said.

Great rustic atmosphere...

Great rustic atmosphere, good steaks, good drinks, great area. A great place for dinner if in the Highlands.

old time service

By logdog150 |

I called to make anniversary arrangements. We hadn't been there for a while ,but remembered it as a romantic spot. I asked for a table in a little side room that has a fireplace, but was told because it was a weeknight that room wouldn't normally be open but they would check and call me back the next night at 5;30 and let me know. At 5:32 the next evening they called to tell me they would open the room for us. It's no wonder the Highland Tap has been open and bustling for so long. The food was great and the service was excellent . Thanks a lot to everyone involved.

Good steak but rushed service

By ATLconsultant |

We went on New Years day and only a few tables on a Friday night. Makes sense, given that New Years Eve was on a Thursday. Food was good for the most part. Steak was perfectly cooked and tasty. Hadn't beein in 10 years, but my steak tasted as good as it did 10 years ago. My biggest gripe lays with service. The hostess was as sweet as she could be but our server was obviously trying to rush us out. We had 9:00 reservations and you could tell he just wanted my mom and i to leave quickly. Also he served us a Blue Moon (didn't bring the bottle to the table to hide the fact) when we ordered a Hoegarden. Also, smoke from adjacent bar makes its way into the first half of the restaurant. Needs some air filters set up strategically at the barrier. Martini was good but for $13.50 for a regular sized (not jumbo) martini, i'm not so sure it was a great value.

Early Saturday dinner

By M0ther_of_5 |

We arrived as the kitchen opened at four. Delightful service, delicious fish and ribs. Good bar selection. Interesting location in basement of historic building in the middle of Virginia Highlands. Would definitely come again.

Two Thumbs Up

By RealTaste |

This restaurant has excellent food at a valuable price. Thr crabcale was an excellent appetizer, and the french dip pretty good but their wood fired steaks are really good. The service was a little slow at the beginning but a quickly later she bacame attentive. The server was also very friendly, positive, and funny which is something I like personally. I reccomend this restaurant for a night out in the highlands of Atlanta.

Where are the mussels?

Great for steak - if you want anything else, go elsewhere. Nice basement cellar type atmosphere - kind of old world. I'll go back but only if I'm in the mood for steak.

Better than expected

By RAZBW |

Had dinner here a few weeks ago with a bunch of guys after golfing. The calamari appetizer was good as was my prime rib with crawfish and hollandaise.

Still My favorite steakhouse in Atlanta and very affordable

By Al E |

Absolutely excellent food that is always consistent- the best dirty martini with blue cheese olives and the perfect handmade hamburgers to the delicious prime rib - casual atmosphere with great servers- Highly recommended (I took friends last night who asked to go back there after having taken them last visit.

It's a Classic--But You Might Need a Flashlight!

By dra319 |

Great atmosphere! This darkened steakhouse sits downstairs--under the corner of Virgina and Highland Avenues. If you want to get a dark, quiet table where your dinner mate may not even be able to see your face, this is the place. The bar--much too close to the restaurant--is full of characters (sort of like the pub in Star Wars) and clearly appeals to a different clientele than the restaurant. The food is often above average (steak is safest but te salads are good) but the service is indifferent at best. And, while the candlelight is nice, you often find yourself wiggling uncomfortably in your booth, trying to find a spot where the springs are not poking your backside. But these are more nuisance than annoyance. It's a popular place, due more I think to the atmophere than the food. If you live in Atlanta you owe yourself at least one trip to 'The Tap'--it's another one-of-kind restaurant in a neighborhood full of them!

Great Food and Neat Environment

By Stephen R |

This place had great ambiance and the food was awesome. The ribeye was possibly the best one I've ever had. I've been to steak places with great names and excellent reputations so I was surprised when I had a steak as good as the one here at Highland Tap. The sides were excellent and the place feels really private.

Great service, a bit pricey

By Fourester |

I ate here on the last night of a business trip as a treat to myself for finishing the class and passing the exam. I had the small New York strip, marinated mushrooms, and green beans, along with a Fat Tire draft. The steak was good, properly cooked, and well seasoned. The mushrooms were unique; marinated, then grilled. And the green beans were just the right crispiness. Unfortunately, I am limited on the amount of bread I can eat because the bread was really good. The service was great, and I am happy they have reservations though Trip Advisor. I made mine at 5:55, and it was on their computer when i got there for my 6:30 reservation. I strongly recommend reservations on weekends. The place was really filling up when I got there on a Friday. The smokey smell is only evident in the stairwell leading down to the place (it is in a basement). It did not seem as dark as others have mentioned. Cell phone service is pretty shabby, as you might imagine. So, ladies, this means he has to look at you and not the smartphone all night! Most of the wait staff was over 30 which is a dead giveaway that a place is really good, but pricey. The meal and beer came out to about $27, and I didn't get the grande steak.

Fabulous

By Marcia L |

Our group of 19 showed up with short notice. Not only was the waitress phenomenal, but the food was extraordinary! The menu was extensive, making choices difficult. The Grilled mahi mahi was ultimately my choice. The presentation was beautiful and the combination of flavors was wonderful.

Disappointed

By Sherpa18461267338 |

I placed an order to go but that was a big mistake. The manager was rude, disrespectful, and racist. The meat was supposed to be medium and blacked not burnt!

Food is great

By Cathy C |

Food is great. We had steak and can't complain about any of it. Waiter seemed to have a little bit of an attitude, he just wasn't too friendly the way I feel wait staff should be. Would return if in the area again.

Virginia Highlands on tap

Good food, outstanding service in quaint neighborhood.

Great food, good community bar

By kurokitty |

Came here to watch the Falcons game and enjoy the great food here. It's a real community bar -- on this day there was a blind date, a guy doing the crossword puzzle and someone else reading the newspaper all at the bar! I had the french dip with fries and onion rings and it was great. I've enjoyed the food here over the years -- the egg platter is a great brunch deal and I bet this place could make just about anything you want. Used to fret about reception issues going downstairs to the bar but the free wifi works well here -- good enough to keep up with the fantasy football team on game day. I'll definitely be back to try other things on the menu!

Great staple in Virginia...

By Jeff T |

Great staple in Virginia Highlands. Great gathering place.

A wonderful evening and delcious as well

By Schultz79 |

Excellent atmosphere, friendly and efficient service, drinks were perfect and plentiful. But the best part was the perfectly prepared steaks. We tried several different cuts, and everyone had nothing but great things to say. It can get a tad noisy, but it's a small thing compared to the wonderful dining experience we had.

Love It!!

By Janice D |

A hidden gem!! Great food....steaks are great!! Kind of an old time steak house....but not lost in time. They are fresh and current. In a great location. We love taking out of town company there and are never disappointed. Fun, funky and great "no attitude" wait staff. It is 5 stars in our book!!

retro martini and steak cellar

By Samdaddyo |

dark bar, great steaks.kind of a sixties basement feel with the smell of real wood smoke from the grill.
