Great Food on the Patio

By Lovtorun |

We came straight here from the airport on a weekend visit. Had a table on the patio. Ordered a combination of brunch and lunch food. Everything was fresh, hot and delicious. Great omelet and potatoes, sandwiches very flavorful. Friendly, warm service. Will go back for sure. Smallish parking lot on the side. Just around the corner from the Texas State Cemetery which was a nice walk and place to visit.

An adorable eatery!

By Kelly F |

An adorable eatery with the most delicious comfort food. The Mac n cheese starter was delectable and the perfect sharing size for 3-4 people. The burger was delicious as well and the fries were top notch. The decor is perfect and we loved our server as well. Will definitely return next time in Austin.

Meh

By DCmetrodogmom |

Came with friends for early happy hour. Not impressed with app menu. Very heavy and limited options. I got the ice cream sandwich, which was good but too small. Not a good value. We sat outside. It was hot and we had flies and a bee near us. Restaurant had fans, but they weren't on, and when asked to turn them on, they couldn't. Some servers were helpful, others unfriendly. Cat hair all over pillows. Why? Bathrooms shared a coed sink, but behind a door, which made me leery. Overall, despite the hip ambiance, I wouldn't recommend it. Too many friendlier options elsewhere with better value.

LONGGGG wait for brunch

By Barbara V |

Ever cute decor, great bloody mary....food was just ok. This trendy spot is very adorable and I wanted to fall in love with this place. We went for brunch a 35-minute wait was almost 2 hours!!! The hostess did a very poor job in trying to combine tables, offering us something for the long wait, for God's sake, ask people hanging out on large tops to go to the bar and buy them a drink! The breakfast sandwich was VERY good with sunflower sprouts, fried green tomatoes, and egg. All other breakfast items were just ok. Suggestions used fried new potatoes in lieu of your over crisp deep fried frozen potatoes.

Amazing Brunch!

By awardtravelchick1 |

Great atmosphere. Fantastic food. Fun delicious drinks. My party of six loved everything we ordered! Blueberry Pancakes, Green onion biscuit and sausage gravy, Ham and Parmesan cheese grits, Big Brekkie, and the Fried egg sandwich. My bloody mary was almost too pretty to drink...but I did! The staff was great. Nice and friendly from the Bartender to our server. We didn't feel rushed, even though there was a long line waiting to be seated. Will make it a stop every trip to Austin!

Best Breakfast We Have Ever Had!

By Gary W |

If you are in Austin, you have to make Hillside Farmacy a breakfast or brunch destination! You will not be disappointed....the food, service and atmosphere are wonderful.

Uniquely Great!

By Michael C |

Came here for brunch on a Sunday and was impressed by the food as well as the atmosphere. The signature drinks were decadent and the food was above average! I would definitely recommend this place for a nice couples brunch!

Cold Eggs

By Sepib0 |

I had heard so many good things about this restaurant's food. But when my food arrived the eggs were cold. I think they waited to serve the whole table and we were 5. The service was good.

Amazing and healthy food

By Linda G |

I read about this place but I had to check it out and see if for myself, everything is organic comes from local farms, the atmosphere is very organic and French lounge music, we took advantage of the great weather and sat outside, waitress was very informative of their menu and explain their specialties. Absolutely delicious... I had the fried egg toast had avocado and yummy potato cake inside, try their natural sodas,I had the turmeric drink on ice and I can tell you I’m coming back again!

High Priced Hipster Haven On The Eastside

By Jim T |

having now dined here for breakfast, lunch and dinner, i felt it was time to comment. if money is no object, this place will do--if you can get a table, as it gets quite packed on the weekends. (however at least there is free parking--if you can snag a spot.) a glass of wine cost $11--almost the cost of a bottle. the setting is cute, in an old re-purposed drug store, with the industrial look in the ceiling complimenting the old style wood of the fixtures. there is a full bar, but the dinner menu is quite limited--maybe 8 items (burger & fries--$16!!) and a bunch of appetizers, oysters too. the service is OK, the food is good, but is it worth the price and bother? not to me, but YMMV.

Dreamy desserts and decor...

By Texasrealtor8 |

I share similar sentiments from my fellow tripavisor critics. Specifically, the very small wine serving. I dare say my "glass" of $8 dollar wine wasn't more than two oz. The service was slow, but not too bad as we arrived very early on a school night. Our server was extremely informative as to the specials and the menu in general. My beef bourgogne was so very tender, but once again what's with the kid-sized portions? If not for dessert, I would have left hungry, needing to make a Torchy's run! I must say I will return, if only for the desserts -- the chocolate one in the mini mason jar was enough for me to forget all about the stingy portions, and focus only on one of the best chocolate desserts I've ever tasted (and I've sampled a lot!!).

Expensive and terrible!!

By Christina S |

I paid $14.00 plus tax and tip for Big Brekkie for WILTED mixed greens, and ONE 1/2 inch wide of small avocado with two eggs, COLD grits and small MINI biscuit. I got the small avocado in place of bacon. I can't help feeling ripped off.

Wish you were close by

By Rena D |

If Hillside Farmacy was close by, I would be there always. Happy hour is a great time to be there to enjoy the afternoon with cocktails and little dishes or deserts. The décor is unbelievably fantastic. It makes me so happy to be there.

Loved the food!

By Dee B |

This is a gem of a place! Had their fish and chips. Local farm sourced. Food is reasonably priced and extremely fresh!

The Cure for What Ales You

By Ron Z |

We stayed east of I 35, just a few blocks from downtown Austin. We were steered to 11th Street for lunch - "there are many places to eat there." And there are. But there is only 1 Hillside Farmacy. It is very "old pharmacy-like" from the outside, save for al fresco umbrella tables and chairs outside. We chose to eat inside. Rather than being drenched by sunshine, we were soaked in charm. The old pharmacy, replete with wall-to-wall-to-ceiling built-in drawers and shelves behind huge sliding glass door fronts containg gifts of wide variety (most of Austin origin), welcomes the casual and the romantic diner. We had a breakfast and a brunch there. We are bloody mary aficionados and consider our homemades the best - until we were served the veggie mary delight at Hillside. Bar none, the best. It introduced a breakfast like no other. My "breakfast bowl" consisted of fresh wilted kale mixed with red peppers and home fries, topped by two perfectly poached eggs. The yolks 'dressed' the greens, making the dish one of the most unusual and exquisite breakfasts I have ever enjoyed. At brunch the following day I had a casserole of mac 'n cheese topped by a poached egg. It was sinfully decadent and delicious. My wife had eggs and bangers so plentiful that she had to share them with me. Even we two could not finish them, but every bite was succulent and moderately, pleasingly spiced. Due to scheduling we never dined there, but we saw the menu and, next trip to Austin, it will be a dinner destination, and the farmaceutical cure for what ales us.

Love the vintage apothecary decor

By saigon75 |

A friend visiting from DC read very good reviews about this restaurant so we went for brunch on a beautiful Sunday. We found nearby off street parking and did not have to wait for a table even tho it was crowded and lively. We both had the Big Brekkie which was yummy. We would recommend and return.

Good Breakfast

By Greg W |

Had standard bacon & eggs with coffee, but it was superb. Everything cooked exactly right, and the portions were perfect.

Outdoorsy little restaurant with flavor

By Barbara W |

Lunch on a Friday afternoon was quiet on the east side patio. Really cool feeling under the stripped awning. Menu for beverages is different, Hibiscus Lemonade was cool and tasty. Wine was actually pricey. Sandwiches were really good size and different combinations. Had the Italian Stallion, yummy. Others had hamburgers with egg. Grilled side of broccoli was most tasty. Side of french fries had a sweet flavor that I liked.

Decent food on the east side

By poetesstx |

It was about 1:00 pm when we showed up for lunch. I'll talk about the negatives first and then finish with the positives. First, the place is VERY crowded and noisy. Cement floors do nothing to mute the crescendoing crowds. Next, the menu (at 1 pm) was really aimed more for breakfast/brunch. This may work with the college crowd, but for working stiffs - it seemed to me a bit late for brunch. We were starving and (unless you ask for it) no sort of bread or crackers are brought to the table. Now for all the good stuff. The wait staff were VERY organized. I love it when good customer service happens (and they could have blamed it on the huge crowd, but they didn't... they just did their jobs very well). I got a vegetarian eggs benedict, and my friend got the cuban sandwich. We were both extremely happy with our meals. The eggs benedict came with a sweet potato and caramelized onion hash. Who knew sweet potatoes paired so well with onions??? I'll definitely try that again! The restaurant has a great central location and a nice, quirky Austin vibe. I'm glad I went, but I think, unless it's for dinner next time, I'll only go when I plan to have breakfast.

Long wait, bad service.

By margo b |

As others have said, the decor is charming, but then there is the rest. We ordered oysters that were fine… then the wait….and wait …and wait. I ordered duck and was told "oh I thought I told you we were out of that". Finally I asked if food was eminent sometime in my life and was told the mac and cheese was holding up the order (30 minutes at this point), although the table beside us had arrived much later and was almost finished. The pork chop was nothing special, the steak was good. The server did in all fairness comp us a glass of wine, but I still wouldn't go back with all the great choices here in Austin.

Had a great brunch during Fun Fun Fun Fest!

By anna91182 |

First time to Austin, TX, and we heard Sunday brunch is kind of a big deal. We checked out reviews online and decided to go with Hillside Farmacy. We walked to their location from campus and when we arrived found the place packed. We waited for 20 minutes on the picnic tables outside, but was quickly offered beverage service. We thought this was pretty cool.... In most cities, Sunday morning you are going to wait point blank. Getting a cup of coffee or water while you wait and a place to sit goes a LONG way. Once seated, we had prompt service and the food was different and EXCELLENT. I have to say, I will remember this breakfast for a long time. I got the breakfast sandwhich with a fried green tomato and mac n cheese. Delicious! Get the beaker of mimosas. It is a good value and you will be the envy of the other tables. We sat outside and had a pleasant time. Worth going off the "beaten path". Very hip and if you are a tourist, you will feel like a "weird" local.

An Austin Favorite

By lorennoelle |

Hillside Farmacy is consistently fresh and delicious. Wonderful brunch on weekends and a great place for a laidback business lunch during the week.

Excellent!

By coraltravels |

Recently visited Hillside Farmacy with a group of girlfriends for a bachelorette trip. We stopped in here for a late lunch and LOVED it. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and very accommodating for some special requests. Will definitely be back!

An Austin Sleeper next to the State Cemetary

By ohiowino2010 |

We stopped in after touring the state capitol building and were badly in need of nourishment. What a wonderful surprise awaited us when we walked in at about 1:00 PM. We were warmly greeted and given a nearby booth almost immediately on this our first visit. My wife and I wanted to try somethings we thought might be unique. The gazpacho fit the bill. It was thick and cool with plenty of fresh vegetables shining through the blend. We had two sandwiches; a Smithy and a Numba 6. Both were tremendously tasty and filling. They are big enough to share for those who are looking for a lighter lunch. I had a Pickpocket house made soda drink that was as tasty and satisfying as the sandwiches. You owe it to yourself to try one of their soda (naked) to appreciate just how good a fountain drink can be. All in all, we had a wonderful time here with excellent service and food. We left very refreshed.

Hillside Farmacy Review

By Ahmad Hatab |

Not a lot of seating, but a nice patio area for the summer. Our waiter was awful. The man should not be working in customer service, plain and simple. Classic Burger: You have to pay extra for cheese. It tastes fine, but nothing spectacular. Flavor needs more sharpness - 7/10 Malt Vinegar Fries: These are a must have. The fries are nice and crispy, but still showered with the vinegar - 9.1/10 House-made Aioli: To much mayo flavor, not enough garlic, lemon, mustard - 4/10 Overall: 7/10 Follow me on Instagram @ahmadeats for all the foods and attractions

Delicious fresh tasting food

By LaurenPj |

Went here on a recommendtion from our hotel. A little out the way but well worth the trip. Delicious fresh food and great cocktails. The staff were lovely. The decor of the place really makes it, quirky but very nicely done. Highly recommended.

Just brilliant - amazing interior and food

By Steeeel |

We were recommended this by our SoulCycle instructor - seriously. It was epic, and well worth the trip from South Congress where we were staying. Hillside is one of those restaurants it takes you forever to decide what you want, because you want everything on the menu. LOVED the interior - every corner you just want to post to Instagram #interiors I've since recommended it to friends who visited Austin - they loved it too.

Reminder of Europe :)

By Traveling_Tanja |

Eating here reminded me of our time in Europe. We sat outside and enjoyed one of their cocktail "cures" (jalapeno bloody Mary) and old fashioned sodas (Pick Pocket- YUMM) with a twist. It was absolutely lovely to be able to sit at an outdoor cafe and enjoy a date. The drawback is the cafe is located on a very busy intersection, so there is a constant buzz of traffic. I was absolutely delighted that the table next to us even brought their dog!! He sat perfectly well behaved under the table. One of the things that impressed us was the wait staff. Though the restaurant was fairly busy when we were there we were constantly being asked if we needed anything else or if we could be helped. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive to all the customers, not just their own. The appetizers we had were phenominal; artichokes with with white anchovies and a half dozen oysters. The problem was that wasn't really enough for dinner and at the cost (although we will definitely be back) we were not going to order another appetizer, we wanted FOOD. We were not aware that from 4p-6p they ONLY serve appetizers. If you are aware of that and prepared this is quite a lovely experience, one I look forward to repeating.

Go for drinks and appetizers

By Nicole S |

I went for a girls brunch. The patio is great for spring time and the location has a lot to walk to nearby. The food took a long time to come out and my sandwich was really hard To eat (the components kept falling out). I left still feeling hungry after my sandwich. But our drinks were very well made and I would come back for that.

Farm-to-Table

By David L |

Formerly an apothecary, this restaurant has a cool and unique vibe. The chef and bartender (mixologist) really know their stuff. The food, service and atmosphere are all way above par. Even the prime beef steaks are local. And all things considered, I did not find it particularly expensive.

Great Out of the Way Eatery

By Linda S |

A local took us here for a late lunch/early dinner and it was great. Atmosphere is eclectic and the menu features local craft beers and maybe the best burger around. Another not to miss iis their French fries - hand cut from fresh potatoes with malt vinegar and they are SO GOOD! We ate outside in their comfortable sidewalk cafe and recommend sitting there if the weather cooperates. Make the effort to find this out of the way place close to downtown - you won't be disappointed.

OK, but not GREAT! Certainly does not live up to its reviews.

By Pchiodox |

My mother and I have decided that many people apparently don't prepare meals at home anymore, which would explain the immense popularity of the Hillside Farmacy. It's OK, but certainly not great. I had the Numba Six, which had all the right ingredients for a great sandwich, but had so much balsamic vinegar that I could not taste the roasted garlic or basil or aioli or anything else for that matter. The sandwich contained arugula (whoopee) and was supposed to contain tomatoes, but I don't remember them. So basically I paid $12.00 for nutrition, not flavor. My mother had the Sheperd's Pie which was pretty flavorless also. Listen, I'm a foodie and I like quality food and avoid processed meals like the plague. However, I could have taken hamburger meat, added a packet of McCormick's seasoning, mixed in a tablelspoon of corn, topped it off with mashed potatoes (swirled them around to make them look presentable), put the dish in the oven, and that would have had more flavorful than this $13.00 plate. Sorry, but as much as I tried to like this place it did not live up to the hype.

Nice Atmosphere

By Andy H |

Very cool atmosphere in a old building turned into a neat place to eat w/ a funky atmosphere. Very much a hipster vibe inside and sound easily carries. Having local organic food is a very nice touch.

Worst Easter brunch ever!

By Kristie H |

My fresh egg bowl had two unappealing eggs sitting on top of a pile of wilted greens. The waitress described a completely different dish when I asked about it. My daughter's pancakes had to returned because they were not cooked and had liquid batter on the underside. They gave us the wrong check and had a difficult time trying to rectify their error. It was a pathetic experience.

Great lunch

By Kjj |

Enjoyed a nice lunch. Hamburger was delicious as were the salads. Fun and unique atmosphere. Would definitely return.

A Lot of Food

By aprilstrick |

I split the club sandwich with a friend & didn’t even finish my 1/2. It was a little pricy, but good food.

Very good food, no parking, slow meal

By jessjjmc |

Parking was difficult but we arrived in time for our reservations at 7. There were only 4 other tables of customers when we arrived. We had the farmacy plate as an appetizer and enjoyed it a lot. All of the components blended beautifully and were tasty. It wasn't served until 7:35. My husband had the butternut ravioli. He said it was good but a little bland and the pasta was a little under cooked. I had the roasted chicken. The hash was the best part. Loved it. We received our main dishes at 8:07. We also each enjoyed a dessert (ice cream sandwiches and the roasted marshmallows mousse) and both were delicious! Served at 8:37. Service was great. Food was outstanding. Food was slow.

Awesome brunch!

By Travis T |

Stopped by after attending the March for Science and it was awesome after the long walk. Brunch menu runs til 3 on Saturdays. Come at 2:30, and stay until you can order happy hour drinks which begims at 3. Us science nerds loved it. Had the pamcakes and big brekkie, but salads, samdwiches, and mac n cheese all looked awesome as well. Happy hour drinks are $2 off which let us get mimosas for only $2 each. You can't beat it! The area is great for seeing lots of local vendors and food trucks. Best brunch!

Stopped in for a drink

By CHutch |

Fun atmosphere - we had an afternoon drink at the bar - aperol spritz was good - unfortunately the bartender was not especially friendly, as we felt as if we were bothering him by being there. Too bad because we would have stayed longer, or gone back for dinner or brunch, had we felt welcomed there.

Nice Patio, Left Hungry

By texann100 |

We had been waiting a long time to try this farm-to-table spot! The inside seating was taken (very cool atmosphere) so we landed at a breezy patio table. Food finally came after an eternal wait but the food although healthy, was nothing special - small portions that left us hungry for something satisfying and flavorful.

The good, the bad and the meh

By 2ta |

The decor is charming. The food is good, not outstanding. The staff, in my half dozen visits, often seems annoyed you're there. Small wine pours and over-priced. You could do worse...and better.

worth the wait

By monica_k840 |

The decor has been described in other reviews. The loudness has not been emphasized for Sunday brunch. The place was packed, and the wait to be seated was "20-30 minutes." This was at 12:30 pm. We were seated at 1:30. Despite all the din and masses of people, through which the wait staff had to navigate, no one appeared upset or in a hurry. All the personnel, from the host to the food preparer in front, were calm and welcoming. Our server was Angela. She greeted us as if we were among the first customers for the day. The menu for brunch is varied, but limited to a small selection. We started with the pimento cheese appetizer. It was made with roasted red bell peppers and had a mellow creamy taste, none of that jarring fake mayo sweet taste. My husband had the seasonal omelet bursting with ingredients such as roasted zuchinni, roasted squash, sauteed kale, caramelized onions, and provolone cheese. Homestyle red potato chunks accompanied the omelet. I had the Big Brekkie which consisted of two eggs, potatoes, bacon, wonderful whole grain toast, fresh, fresh butter, and a small, lightly dressed mound of arugula. OMG!!!! The eggs were so rich and tasty, not like the refrigerated stuff we buy in the grocery store. Not even the commercial cage-free organic eggs are this good!!! I will definitely return, but for late brunch, after 1:30 pm, as it seemed that the crowd was thinning out by then.

Nice but dsappointed

By Jacky B |

We had high expectations based on previous recommendations. The restaurant has been set up in an original pharmacy and has a lot of interesting decor. The food that we all selected was very tasty and we had an enjoyable evening out. However, the menu was even more limited than usual. Hillside offers 6 main meals but on this particular evening only four were available. To top it the two mains that they had run out of were burgers and steak! Seriously! In Texas! In addition one of our party requested a drink, dark and stormy, which they were also out of. Given a convenience store was across the road you would think someone could have purchased extra rum, or ginger ale, or whatever it was they had run out of. The wine was served in a tumbler, which was a bit tacky and was expensive given it was casa! The drinks also took a long time to come out. I realise this review sounds whinging and I understand that restaurants run out of meals but, we had booked days in advance and confirmed our booking on the day, so they knew our party of 8 were coming. Overall disappointing Hillside.

Good Food, Cool Atmosphere

By Counterweight |

I recently had dinner here with my wife. She is vegetarian and we had heard from friends and neighbors that this was a good place to get vegetarian dishes, so we decided to give it a try. Hillside Farmacy is located on East 11th Street, it's a rapidly gentrifying part of town and there are a number of really good restaurants (Franklin BBQ, Blue Dahlia, etc.) in the immediate area. Parking is not easy to find, but you can usually find surface parking nearby and the walk (if it's not too hot) is pleasant. Hillside has indoor and outdoor seating, again, if it's not too hot, the outside seating is pleasant for people-watching. Our server was friendly and personable. In terms of the food, there are several vegetarian options, but the majority of the menu is not vegetarian. My wife had a vegetable sandwich which she thought was tasty but not outstanding, I had a shrimp and pasta dish. I thought the shrimp was a little over-cooked, but the house-made pasta was delicious. I had a cocktail that was OK, my wife had a house-made strawberry fountain soda that didn't impress either one of us. All in all, we had a very pleasant experience at Hillside Farmacy. The food was good but not great, but the ambiance was really nice and conducive to a romantic couples dinner. I'm sure we will be visiting here again in the near future.

Hidden Gem

By tbkberg |

Loved it great food and old pharmacy with lots of cute things . Our favorite breakfast place in Austin The grapefruit is Amazing!,,and the Egg sandwich to die for 💕💕💕

Long wait. Just sayin'

By catchyginger |

Came here again for brunch/lunch on a Friday. There was no wait for seating which was good because there was quite a wait for our food. While there was a wait for food, the drinks did come in a reasonable amount of time. I guess it is tough to complain when you have a bloody mary in front of you. Once the food did come, it was quickly devoured. I had the egg sandwich. It was good in a homestyle type way. Nothing out of the ordinary here, but it was a good breakfast sandwich. A couple in our group had the ham steak They approved. I don't dig on swine so I did not try it. The homefries were plentiful and spiced nicely. If you have not been here, the ambiance is pretty neat. Old drugstore turned restaurant. There is also outdoor seating. After your meal, go walk around the Texas state Cemetery to burn those calories! The food is decent and the drinks good. The wait time is a bit long in my mind. If you don't mind waiting and having a few drinks, check this place out. If you are short on time, go somewhere else.

Pharmacist visits Farmacy

By ArtTripHer |

My husband is a pharmacist who graduated from UT pharmacy school back in the '70s, so we HAD to eat at Hillside Farmacy. We loved the ambience of the quaint building and how evidence of the old pharmacy remained. Vintage pharmacy items were used in the decor....even in the salt and pepper shakers. We went for lunch on a Thursday, with no line, and only a short wait (maybe 5-10 min) for a table. This is a small popular restaurant so we had expected it to be longer. This is Austin and waiting for tables is a given. (Franklin's line was just down the street!). Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. I ordered the fried egg sandwich and my husband ordered a burger and fries. We waited little awhile for our food, but we're in no hurry. The food came and my fried egg sandwich was devine! My husbands burger was too rare for him (the waitress never asked him how he wanted it, so she graciously took it back. Someone came from the back...possiblely the chef, and said that they always cook it medium unless told otherwise and they would get it out to him soon. The burger was not medium in our opinion at all...my husband was fearful of getting sick. Thus the 4 stars...we feel their customers need to be told of this policy when they order. The sweet waitress returned in a bit and said that they were redoing his burger and it would be a few more min. It came soon after and was perfect and delicious! And the malt vinegar fries are to die for! All and all, we had fabulous food, great service, and fun ambience! Just be sure you tell them how you want your burger!

Great character!

By annie1108 |

A server at a bakery in Austin recommended Hillside Farmacy when my husband asked for great raw oysters in the area. To be honest, I didn't think they would deliver, but they sure did! The place itself is just darn cute! Very casual, full of character. Great for families, friends, dates, lunch or dinner. I ordered the mac and cheese and malt fries - both great choices. My husband couldn't stop raving about how fresh they oysters were. We were both so surprised. The wait staff was so gracious and polite. Answered all our questions and even tried to get more information when we mistakenly thought we had seen this place on Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I would definitely recommend checking this place out when in Austin.

Crazy long wait for food

By verycriticaltraveler |

The brunch food was yummy when we got it but it took almost an hour to get our food and it didn't seem that busy.

Great atmosphere and wonderful food

By metahofzicht |

Went here with some of my colleagues for lunch. What an ambiance! loved it. Friendly staff and great lunch and spicy marguerita!

Mmmm, let's eat there again

By Danielle S |

Friends took us here for a special brunch, it was. The owners kept the theme of the building's past life as a pharmacy and ran with it. It's perfectly set up and decorated as an early 19th century pharmacy. The mason jar water glasses fit right in. The food matches the decor, with home style gravy and biscuits to a perfect classic American breakfast you can't go wrong. They have special morning cocktails with all ingredients made in house. Farm to table style dining at its best. It's a treat! Be sure to visit if you're in Austin.

Lovely spot for dinner

By HouMSW |

Three of us chose this for location, not knowing much about it. Turned out to be a wonderful choice. We ordered too much food because everything looked great: creamy parsnip soup, malt vinegar fries, mac & cheese with broccoli, and -- brilliant -- real New York egg cream with whiskey. Typical Austin staff: attentive, knowledgeable, laid back. My only regret was that I couldn't try more dishes this time. Will I go back? You bet.

Loved my lunch here. Sat outside and ate it on a glorious day.

By Hokeypokeysue |

Really enjoyed my shepherd's pie lunch here. I had an accompaniment of coleslaw with it, which was colourful and tasty. The pie was served hot and was really delicious. It was just delightful sitting outside. My son had one of their sandwiches and really enjoyed that too. The lunch was well priced and some of the seafood dishes, like the oysters that other customers had also looked very good. We went during the week, I would imagine that they get pretty busy on the weekend.

Never on Sunday

By HouMSW |

Yogi Berra supposedly said, "No one goes there any more, it's too crowded." He could have been talking about Hillside Farmacy's Sunday brunch. All the restaurants in that part of town are jammed on Sundays. Hillside has a great system of notifying you by text when your table is ready, and you can track the wait time. I really have no problem with popularity; however, the wait for food was interminable, and we were starving by then. Once it arrived, the food was wonderful, as usual. The fried egg sandwich was to die for. Our table was very happy with the grits and bangers & mash. The pancakes were, well, pancakes. Great if you're in need of carbs. Also kind of loud, but I guess we're just too old. Still, a good choice for a belated Mother's Day.

Great decor, beware of baguettes!

By Yankeetransplant |

We'd been wanting to try this restaurant in the rapidly gentrifying part of East Austin. Nice to have free parking next door and very creative decor. Warm, old apothecary atmosphere. Pleasant host welcomed us and apologized for the short wait for a table. Interesting and varied menu for lunch. We ordered three different sandwiches. Wait for such simple items is definitely too long. Food arrived and looked appetizing, accompanied by slaw. Two of the sandwiches were definitely spot on. The third sandwich was on a toasted baguette that was a dentist's dream. Tried twice to bite it and decided my teeth weren't that strong! Toasted concrete! The filling was good which I picked out and ate. Server removed dishes, offered dessert and never inquired about the uneaten baguette The atmosphere and decor score points. I'll return to try something else. Definitely won't order anything on their baguettes.

Unique atmosphere - Unique menu

By beachvacation4me |

I am glad we tried this restaurant. It was adorable on the inside....retro pharmacy . The brunch menu is quite unique and you cannot make changes to items. The daily omelet had some interesting items including onions. No changes, like omitting the onions could be done. All of the menu items were different (banana peanut butter pancakes). All of the ingredients were fresh and local. If you want a basic brunch, this is not the place. If you are looking for something unique, this is your place. The coffee was very good. Staff was very laid back, but courteous.

Great food and service

By Tonya G |

Cool atmosphere. We went for brunch. The food was great and was less expensive than I had expected. I had the biscuit with sausage gravy and eggs. The waitress kept our coffee cups full!

Delightful breakfast/brunch experience

By Gerry G |

This restaurant is a classic Austin eating establishment. A converted former pharmacy, the interior is delightful and the patio is the place to sit on a sunny day. The food is fabulous as the omelette with roasted corn and tomato salsa, homemade, aged chorizo served with chipotle dusted roast potatoes was delicious. And, the wasabi bloody Mary was the perfect complement. The egg sandwich is worth a try and don't leave without some of their wheat bread toast. Best toast I have ever tasted. Our server, Will, was attentive and let us sit for over two hours while we waited for another companion. Only complaint is the chairs on the patio are a bit hard and uncomfortable.

Superb Restaurant

By Mary C |

What a treat this stop was. We had a fantastic meal that included excellent service and very nice atmosphere. My husband and I ordered the bass dish. It was in a curry sauce to die for and had lots of shrimp in the dish also. Was excellent. Best curry sauce I have had in a very long time. The pork bellies and pears were scrumptious. I would eat here all the time if I lived in Austin. So if you are looking for a great place to dine please give Hillside Farmacy a try. They use as much local food as they can and it shows.

Good local restaurant

By traveljunkie275 |

My husband and I tried Hillside for lunch as we were staying in the Eastside. Service was average, none of the issues reported by other reviewers. I had the mac n cheese and beet salad, my husband ordered the shepherd's pie and slaw. Both were very good and solid portions. I also really enjoyed the house strawberry & basil virgin soda. The restaurant has charming decorations, but the chairs are quite uncomfortable for sitting more than 20 minutes!

Charming, Delicious, Dog-Friendly, Alcohol-Friendly

By Denise P |

I was looking for a comfortable, serviced place I could take my dog for brunch. Very difficult to find a serviced porch in Austin. I'm from LA, working in Austin for 3 months. It's just me and my dog and all the dog friendly restaurants/coffee shops, you still have to go inside to stand in line and order. Hillside has an outside patio, they bring water to your dog. The food is Farm to Table and de-friggin-licious. Their staff is friendly. They serve Stumptown Coffee. Yum. They serve a very very good Mai Tai. Not too sweet. I ordered the BLT Benny which was beautiful to look at but even tastier to eat. I like this place.

Wonderful Brunch

By LizB |

If we had seen the portion sizes before we ordered, we would have shared more ! The pancakes are HUGE -- and delicious. The eggs fresh, the juices, milk, fruits, butters - all perfect. Like the ambience. On a Sunday morning everyone from church-goers to just-rolled-out-of-bed, to joggers. Great service, great value. What more could you want ??

Adorable Place, Not So Adorable Experience

By .KK. |

We visited Hillside Farmacy during our recent visit to Austin for a long weekend. We were excited to support another restaurant locally sourcing their food, and arrived just before opening. As a line cued on the street, 9:00am came and went. Finally, at 9:10am or so, one of us tried the door, as no lights were on and no one came to open up the front door to let us know they were ready. I realize we could have checked, but anyone who works in food service knows people beating down the door before opening is obnoxious and we were trying to be respectful. Once seated, we noted it was incredibly dark (no lights turned on) and the space smelled odd... a little dank and musty, which isn't super appetizing for a morning meal. Our server was nice enough, but forgot several items (coffee, then the cream, then the water, etc.) and often needed a reminder. If it had been slammed, I would have understood, but there were only a handful of tables seated, and lots of staff milling about. We ordered the BBQ SHRIMP, LOBSTER GRAVY & GRITS and BRUNCHY MONTE CRISTO after our first option, the frittata, was not available. The shrimp and grits dish was tasty, but the gravy was sparse, and the grits were too dry. The monte cristo was good, but the bread was very soggy, which made the sandwich less-than-desirable after the first few bites. We also ordered biscuits which were overdone, and the butter was so hard it wouldn't spread and didn't taste like honey... just butter. Overall, we had very high hopes for this restaurant, especially given the "Pharmacy" to "Farmacy" idea, and the "food as medicine" concept. However, if you're in Austin for a limited time, there are better options to try that provide a better overall experience.

East Coast/West Coast Oysters

By Diana G |

What a cool place.....I loved the decor - old pharmacy cabinets lined the walls and vintage pharmaceutical advertisements on the walls. The oysters were delicious as was were the cocktails - wasabi bloody mary and champagne cocktail. I look forward to returning for a full meal next time I am in Austin.

Nice Spot for Food and Fun

By Tony R |

This is a great place to meet family and friends for wonderful food and a nice atmosphere on the east side of Austin. The menu, while small, provides a nice sampling of dishes for everyone.

Mediocre Food

By Samantha K |

Have given this place two tries and I find the food to be less than stellar and the prices to be on the high end for what you get. Also, do not get why regular coffee gets free refills but if you get iced coffee, no free refills, its the same thing people!

Delicious food with relaxed service

By Karen N |

If you are in a hurry, this is not for you. But if you want a delicious meal in a relaxed, pleasant environment, then definitely stop. We were fortunate to have stopped on a very pleasant, cool night, and the restaurant was not crowded. The Brussels sprouts are a must-have. One of us had the scallops with orzo - outstanding - one of us had the Niçoise salad - yum - and one the hamburger. All were excellent and well worth the price. What we loved was that we did not have waiters constantly checking on us. They wanted us to have a nice time and were not pushing us to clear the table. We highly recommend this restaurant, both for its ambiance and for its quality!

Saturday Brunch

By Dave H |

Very unique setting. Formerly a pharmacy, according to the story, made for a neat and rustic setting. Went there for Saturday brunch, had to wait about 40 minutes for our table. Good selection of brunch food and nice assortment of adult beverages, more than just mimosas. Prices ranged from about $8 to $13 for the entrees. Shaded outdoor seating with fans and misters were also available. A very nice place for a brunch!

Bad experience at a promising place

By badgerscraic |

Fries were soggy. Brussel sprouts were overcooked, nearly burnt. Service was extremely slow: ~40 mins for simple dinner to arrive. I really wanted to love this place; the decor and atmosphere are wonderful, and the menu is promising. But something was clearly amiss in the kitchen the night I was there (April 2019). I would also have appreciated being able to book a table online, but their app partner wouldn't allow a party of one to make a reservation.

A Most Filling Brunch

By jan r |

The blueberry pancakes were huge. The bangers and eggs were a tasty treat. Great coffee drinks! For brunch with friends, family or whomever. And it's not trendy East Village of Austin.

Good Food!

By Audrey A |

Great Food well prepared. A little hot inside and not very comfortable. Would like to have a little more space and air.

Wow, These Are Great Prices for Delicious Vegan Options

By afreebing |

Loved, loved, loved this small vegan restaurant in East Austin. Pharmacy-inspired décor with its restaurant name "playing on" the fresh farm-to-restaurant produce and meats that it offers on its menu selections. Simple, old-fashioned, apothecary-style accent pieces and cabinetry charmingly tie the 2 dining rooms together. There's also white & black mixed, hexagon porcelain mosaic flooring for an authentic flair to the vintage-inspired interior. Initial service was slow mid-afternoon, but pleasantly friendly after lunch orders were taken and served. (We 2 ordered a tempeh sandwich with avocado and a side order of French fries ($10.50), and a tasty kale salad with lukewarm tomato soup ($11.00).) Iced tea was $2.50. Total bill for 2 persons = approx. $26 with an extra 20% tip added. Here's a fantastic eatery with great lunch prices and delicious vegan options. A "must try".

Excellent food

By Stephanie H |

The food was fantastic! Eggs scrambled soft were done to perfection. The setting is fun. Old apothecary bottles and bins behind glass for decorations. Our server was a college kid working through school, so I give her a small pass on some minor faux pas. My breakfast companion had his eggs over medium, again, perfection! We had a late breakfast, on a weekday, so the place was not crowded. I have recommended this place to friends and will continue to do so. Definitely a "go back" place next time in Austin.

Yummmmm!

By Ang S |

Fresh from the garden to the table, the menu changes often. I had never eaten tomato soup in my life, until here. The chef made a fantastic, creamy tomato bisque which was amazing! The fresh bread and veggies on the sandwich I had with it were some of the best I've ever had. I've been back several times and had something different each time....always scrumptious. The atmosphere is a lovely old pharmacy, brought back to life with this restaurant. A great place to go with friends!

AH MAZING

By Dana A |

Great menu with vegetarian options. Friendly staff, cozy eclectic environment. Will definitely be back next visit to Austin!

Love it!

By MilkmaidTS |

Best mac and cheese and Bloody Mary ever! Never had a Bloody Mary with olives, cucumbers, celery and pickled onions before...and it was perfectly spiced and delicious. Love the ambience, and the waitstaff was friendly and attentive. Fun and uniquely flavored salsas for sale which were displayed in the vintage pharmacy cupboards. There's an oyster bar, too. We were told there's be a 30 minute wait, but we got seated in 15. I understand this is an Austin favorite and now one of mine, too.

Good menu made from locally sourced ingredients

By Pocholoboy |

Had happy hour here and had a great experience. I ordered the mac n cheese, and grapefruit margarita and the arugula and beer salad -- all outstanding. One negative -- I found a hair in my Mac n cheese! Eeeck!

Very hip, good food, and service

By Michael C |

6 of us went on Saturday at 5:00 pm. The venue is terminally hip with decent menu and not much parking Friendly service staff. Solid happy hours 3-6 include $2 off some drinks. I had a house salad with vegetable lasagna and it was decent. I prefer a tomato based sauce and the salad had a bit too much dressing. My wife ordered the crab cakes and it was way too "fishy" as she explained why she didn't finish it. She enjoys crab cakes and usually they are absent that fishy taste Great atmosphere and old time pharmacy memorabilia and posters help give a good vibe to the place. Malt vinegar fries were good as appetizer. Try it if you're in the neighborhood. Worth a visit. Plus they have outdoor seating. If you like Michelada they have among the best!!

Hip East Side Locale

By luvplayacar |

Hillside Farmacy has gone from being the first African American owned pharmacy in Austin in the 50's to being a cool, new, hip restaurant. Located on 11th St, just east of I35, you can find diners enjoying the al fresco patio or indoors among the historic display shelves and tile floors of the original pharmacy. Great service from vintage dressed waitstaff, unique combinations of food: ie: the Thank You sandwich, chicken with smoked mozzarella cheese, with strawberry jam and sprouts ($8.00 for lunch). Or today's soup special was tomato with fennel ($5). Atmosphere is A++ and even the restroom is unique - a coed hand washing station. I am a particular fan of the happy hour - and choose to dine on the cheese platter and one of their hand made cocktails - House Punch, gin, bubbles, hibiscus syrup, grapefruit juice or a grapefruit jalapeño margarita. Lip smacking good!

great

By Pam N |

Great Location and good food. Staff was friendly. Presentation of food was very well done. environment was very pleasant.

Very good food in a quaint old Pharmacy

By Talon38 |

This was our family's first visit to Hillside (for brunch) and we were very impressed. It is obviously very popular and although we had a short wait (it was busy!), we had hot chocolate (excellent) by friendly barista then brunch. We pretty well covered the menu with our choices as each of six tried something different, but it was all great. We've yet to the Farmacy for dinner, but will let you know! Try it!

Lovely and yet, lacking

By Drema D |

The Hillside Farmacy has a warm and inviting ambience. Creative decor with apothecary touches, and pharmacy bookcases. The menu is small and eclectic, with their specialty being oysters. I'm not an oyster fan so can't offer a review. The wine came in tiny glasses that seemed more suited to a bathroom glass. And the glass size was not reflected in the price. Their version of ratatouille was similar to lasagna--hey guys, lots of vegetables doesn't mean it's ratatouille! The charcuterie plate was pleasant if uninspired. Like someone else wrote, lots of promise but without the execution.

Good breakfast

By havingfuntraveling |

We had breakfast/ lunch around 12:30. The food was very good, I had eggs over easy with bacon. Nice touch they added arugula on the side. Sat outside, service very good. Have fun

Amazing burger!

By John B |

We were lucky to be able to grab a table on the small outdoor terrace and enjoy some beautiful weather while having lunch (though the historic building has a very unique interior - little changed from when it was a drugstore in the 1950s). The burger with malt vinegar fries was to die for - juicy, most flavourful and just big enough to take your mid-day hunger away and priced at $14 was a very good deal. Lots of different local beers to choose from to wash it down.

Locally sourced food

By CAH6145 |

What a wonderful use of an old pharmacy in the heart of Austin,TX. We were there for brunch. The food was beautifully prepared, ample, and delicious. The seating was a bit cramped because it was inside, but there is a lot of outside seating; however it was too cold to sit outside on this day. The server was very attentive and answered out questions. I will go back again!

Farm to table style meals

By scogginsaf |

Love the quality of this restaurant. The ambiance is so beautiful. If you’re wanting a delicious cheat breakfast, get the French toast. You won’t regret it. The bangers and eggs with the relish is a great breakfast to start the day.

Almost a five star

By Kelly r |

Been here twice both times very yummy they had only one mess up and made up for it fresh and simple next time I'm in Austin I'll try the giant cocktail that comes in the punch bowl

So cute!!!

By Joanne M |

What a cute little spot, not very big at all. Renovated lovingly and we all enjoyed the artifacts Our lunch was delicious. My son had the sandwich, my mom crab cakes and I had the kale Caesar salad and all were washed down with their white sangria. Yum!! I can’t wait to go back

Great for a quick bite

By joe |

We both ordered the Big Brekkie with avocado. It was good but only came with half a slice of toast. Would definitely go again but didn't really stand out.

Great atmosphere and attentive service, but....

By DeweyNewYorkNYUSA |

The place I was staying recommended Hillside Farmacy as it was in the neighborhood. I went there on a Monday morning for breakfast so there was absolutely no wait for a table and the place was quiet and peaceful. The interior is warm and inviting without being too precious. My waitress was attentive and friendly When I inquired about on item on the menu she was very honest saying that while it wasn't a favorite of hers, that it was a popular dish. I went ahead and ordered it anyway.."Two eggs in a bowl" and she suggested that if I didn't like super runny eggs(she doesn't) that she would ask the chef to perhaps make them a bit firmer. The finished product was perfect...a nice blend of flavors and textures. The only downside was that it wasn't very filling at all and about 30 minutes later I felt I hadn't eaten at all! A tad pricey to have that empty feeling!

Amazing food and fun staff

By MM |

Great spot for a fun lunch with friends. Love the Chef's sandwich and the oysters on the half shell are super fresh.

Poor service, good oysters

By BRB |

Monday nights are 1/2 off oysters so we went for that and drinks. The server was a strange combination of awkward and pretentious , and for me service is a large part of the dining experience, so that was disappointing. Oysters were very good; drink selection was nice.

Slow slow service

By mark k |

I hate to give one star when the food was overall good (although the flank steak was tough) but it took an hour just to take our order and dinner didn't arrive for 2.5 hours after we sat. No other way to rate this. Our server tried but clearly something very wrong was happening with the operation.

If we would have known, we would have eaten there every morning!

By Keeper of Redheads |

Unbelievable food. Seriously, unbelievable. My fiance and I found this hidden gem, and have talked about it every day since. They have a bizarre cocktail menu, and quite honestly, every single one of them look delicious! Each is about $10 (normal prices) but not freakin' normal flavors... My gosh, the one I had, came with smoked sugar on the rim of the glass. SMOKED SUGAR!! Are you kidding me?! It was delicious!! My fiance had a grapefruit with a broule glaze over it, and she nearly passed out at how good it was. I had the best freakin' ham, cheese grits, and eggs that side of the Mississippi. I don't even like grits (at least I thought I didn't). Those puppies were to die for. All in all, do yourself a favor... if you're in the Austin, TX area, hit this place up! Whether it be for breakfast, brunch, or happy hour, you will NOT regret it!

Charming, delicious and unique!

By travelingirlfrompa |

We joined friends on Sunday for brunch - what a great place! We enjoyed delicious unique food items and the mimosas were good too! We were part of a large group and the service was good despite being a large, needy group.

Great place to have a chat over lunch!

By Deb S |

Met our real estate agent here. It was the perfect atmosphere to chat about houses and paperwork; not loud, large tables, and a great happy hour!!! Also adorable large outside seating area! There is parking around back I believe, we didn't see the sign and parked on the street (only spotting parking in back sign whine walking to restaurant) so look for that as there is not a lot of street parking.

Not that impressed

By lane t |

Didn’t have gluten free bread at the time, we came here because of that for me. . Settled for a pricey salad with little chicken in it. Waitress was fine, but I just didn’t love it. Felt hipster and pricey when it wasn’t that good.

Fantastic!!!

By SUSANPAVLAS |

Such a great place - last time we were there we had breakfast items - amazing!!! There are sooo many terrific things to choose from...

Good food, terrible service

By Mark R |

They had good food. Your typical American style breakfast. The feel was very nice and fun. However, the hostess with pink hair was extremely rude and made several insults. We wanted to leave immediately but we knew several of the other places would be a long wait by that time. I hope she gets fired. She was the worst.

Cute little breakfast spot!

By Lilly F |

Had to grab a quick breakfast before leaving Austin, and this spot really delivered. I loved the decor, had great service the whole time and they were quite fast. The food was also very tasty, as was the coffee.

Just ehh

By Cameron K |

It took a long time to get service and the food was just ok. It seemed a little pricey for an average meal. The gazpacho was nothing special. I enjoyed the cocktail sauce with my shrimp, nice and spicy.

Farm to Table Deliciousness Before ACL

By RRobinson3 |

Hillside Farmacy offers delicious food and drinks in a delightful atmosphere. This was our 10th year in Austin for ACL Music Festival, and we always try to find a great spot for dinner on Thursday night as the calm before the storm. Hillside Farmacy hit the spot! We ordered several apps and small plates to share. We loved the Farmacy Plate, grilled broccoli, malt vinegar fries, crab cakes and oysters from the raw bar. I can't imagine there's anything on the menu that is not delicious. It's definitely worth a visit when in Austin.

Huge wait, poor customer service

By ReadsontheBeach |

Apparently not staffed correctly for the Monday of Memorial Day weekend, the wait for a table was *much* longer than stated (ended up being over an hour)- had we been told that we would have gone elsewhere. Once seated the wait was another 45 minutes for the food. Several surly responses from staff when we were checking in on the timing of our table, etc. The mac and cheese was good, as was the grits, but the sandwich the 3rd member of our party ordered was subpar. Nothing was done to compensate for the extraordinary wait times (perhaps some glasses of your house punch? something to nibble on for the second huge wait? ). I would not return to this restaurant after this experience.

Only serving brunch?

By Ro123 |

On this particular day they were only serving brunch at 12 noon. I was hoping to try the Veggie burger but instead ordered the chicken salad sandwich. Although the portion was large, the sandwich was dry and was not accompanied with any sides. Disappointing dish. The shrimp and grits was very tasty and the serving portion was large. Service was below average. The wait staff seemed unhappy and bothered.

Quaint, cute, unique menu, great atmosphere, tasty food

By Zack C |

The Hillside Farmacy surprised me with a somewhat small menu, yet quite tasty choices. I ate there for breakfast and enjoyed the fried egg sandwich and the blueberry pancakes. Wow! Both were very well prepared, beautifully presented on the plates, and tasted delicious. The location is just slightly north of downtown off the I-35 highway. Worth the visit if you have not been here before!

Decent brunch

By pmpkn219 |

Husband and I came in our first day in Austin. It was early afternoon so brunch menu was on. We had mac+cheese and the Big brekkie (2 eggs, bacon, toast, greens and home fries). Food was good, nothing exceptional but tasty. There was a wait but only exit 20 min which I didn't think was bad. The vintage pharmacy was decked out in Halloween splendor and looked very festive, it was a cute place and Busy!

Delightful and cute

By Carrie G |

Hillside Farmacy is in an old pharmacy which makes it interesting and quirky. The food is delicious and a little different. I ordered the Nicoise Salad which was not made with tuna, but was still very tasty. The highlight for me was the grapefruit mimosas. They were refreshing and just really good. The meal was not cheap, but reasonably priced.

Trusted Austin staple at all times of the day

By shoke318 |

Hillside Farmacy is one of my go-tos in Austin to take out of town friends for brunch or dinner. The food is fantastic, and the atmosphere is cozy and a unique Austin vibe. Historically I usually went for brunch, but we did a friend's birthday dinner there recently and I am completely sold on it as a dinner spot also. It was such a fun setting and ambiance for a group of girlfriends. Hillside Farmacy is a staple of the "old" Austin east side, and a must visit for amazing food and great ambiance.

A Foodie's place in a Foodie town

By doug b |

I travel a lot and as a part of that, eat out a lot and in Austin, you eat BBQ (or not). Admittedly, I stumbled upon Hillside Farmacy and their eclectic menu choosing the "Cooks Sandwich" - made with country style patè, chèvre, arugula, bacon, pickled onions and cucumbers on toasted bread. Now that may sound like an odd combination but it was exceptional! Not the friendliest of staff, not the fastest of service - in fact a bit bohemian - but if that too sounds like you, you'll love this place. I did, a lot.

Quaint atmosphere, casual dining, and very good food

By fabfeline |

This visit for a late lunch is my first, but it won't be my last. The lunch menu isn't large, but it is interesting. I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich (3 different cheeses and tomato slices), soup de jour which was lentil, and a wasabi bloody mary. Everything was fresh. In my opinion, the sandwich was perfect--crusty brown on the outside while soft and gooey on the inside. The lentil soup was warm and flavorful. The cocktail was wonderful as well. I can't wait to try a different meal or another menu item.

Great lunch with a retro atmosphere

By swTXSU |

Had lunch at Hillside Farmacy and it was very good. Menu items were very well thought out, ingredients were fresh and everyone's entree was delicious. Salads were fresh, sandwiches were well made and tasty. Gluten-free bread was also an option. Decor was turn of the century pharmacy and it had many antique furnishings throuout. If it is a pretty day, dining on the patio is a must. Waitstaff was also very friendly and happily answered menu questions. Will go back.

Love this cute little place!

By mmaue627 |

We went to this place because it was a top rated restaurant on trip advisor for the austin area. We went for dinner and loved the look and feel of the restaurant. The food was really good and reasonably priced. The bloody mary I had was terrible - one of the worst ever - but the menu did explicitly state that it was 'different' than the traditional bloody, so I am not ping'ing them any points for that. This restaurant is kind of tucked back into a neighborhood off the main drag of the area in Austin it's in, so don't be surprised if on your walk you are going through a quiet neighborhood! The staff was nice and very hippy-ish but we didn't realize how limited seating was so we didn't make reservations; make sure you do! We had to wait a bit for the bar area (aka one long table in the middle of the room) to open up, and then had to sit next to a really annoying couple.

Interesting decor, average brunch

By rustycat83 |

Fun antique pharmacy retro décor with nice indoor and outdoor seating options. Wait staff were friendly and prompt. The brunch menu is limited in scope and the meal (Big Brekkie and the Bangers & Eggs) were good but not great. The most unique aspect of the food was the great variety of hot sauces (tobacco, jalapeno, habanero, sriracha, etc.) offered to spice up your dish. For breakfast/brunch there are better options.

Good food, great setting but SLOW service

By Maria G |

Went in by myself on a solo trip to Austin. The place was so packed that even the receptionist was tending tables. Finally sat down, no menu, no silverware, no explanation that you are to order at a counter... Had to return to the counter a few times for water, my drink, and to ask about my food. When it arrived, with polite apologies, was not disappointed. Setting was cool, food very good, but place was so disorganized that I'm not sure if I would return.

Unimpressive Austin "foodie hotspot" that as usually the case doesn't live up to they hype

By Michael K |

What the hell is wrong with people in Austin? Another typical d'bag hipster place that you hear people talk about and then it sucks. We went there for lunch and we were the only customers. The hostess was rude. The staff was rude. I got The Italiano and it wasn't any better than you can get as a pre-made sandwich at HEB or Randalls. And it was $11... for a sandwich... There are so many better sandwich shops in Austin like Little Deli and South Side Subs (not to mention Thundercloud and even Subway...) so why go to this rude "foodie" place just because it's on the East side and you think you're being cool? Save your $11 for a sandwich and get two foot longs from Subway.

Excellent food and service but overpriced

By ChowHound2015 |

Party of ten for dinner. Food was really tasty and the waiter provided excellent service which can be a challenge for large parties. Atmosphere nice Austin vibe. The entrée menu is very limited, basically one beef, a burger, one fish, one poultry and a couple vegetarian so recommend viewing the menu online before you go to see if they have something you would order. They were out of shrimp? which took my specialty cocktail and preferred appetizer off the menu. Portion sizes were on the small side, not enough to fill me up. Eating out has become so expensive, that being said when factoring in everything I would have to say the price point at this restaurant is out of line with the norm.

Chef was on Chopped!!

By Orange Crush |

We ended up here after an ATXgals art show. Such an amazing space. The staff was friendly, the food was excellent. We had the special egg nog for dessert around the holidays and it was ah-mazing! BTW...saw this Chef on Chopped, which was pretty cool!

Brunch on Memorial Day was wonderful

By Richard_Temple_TX |

Our whole family ate breakfast earlier than planned thanks to the aborted Cap Texas Triathlon. 2 of us had the green onion biscuits with sausage gravy and 2 over-easy eggs - yum! My wife had the fried egg sandwich - she loved the fried greed tomatoes on it. Daughter had the blueberry pancakes, and other daughter had bacon and eggs - all were wonderful. Coffee was good and strong!

Fun place

By CreveCoeurMo |

Visiting from St. Louis and friends suggested meeting at Hillside Farmacy. It is a cute place. I didn't think the food was outstanding, but I can understand why it is one of our friend's favorite places. The staff is so friendly and you feel like you have stepped back in time. I would happily meet them there again, but I am not sure I would go on my own.

Good food

By Priscilla R |

This is a good place for breakfast. Very unique Bloody Mary. The eggs were cooked perfect and the atmosphere was very Austin. My only complaint is that we had to wait a long time for our table and then were asked to leave as soon as we were finished because they had so many people waiting.

Brunch Disappointment

By Sarah G |

Went for brunch and we all were not impressed. Service was slow, food was really salty, even the eggs, grits were dry, and the pancakes weren't anything special. As we make our rounds on local brunch places, we can't say we'd be back for this salt bomb!

Small, but delicious

By Neskya |

This is a lovely little place that serves excellent food, as well as some nice drinks. It's usually crammed on the weekends, and easy to see why. You can eat indoors or out. They have parking.

Disappointing sunday brunch.

By Emad C |

We heard a lot about this place and about the wait there, so we got there at 11 on Sunday and waited for 20 min which was fine. I like my coffee extra hot so i politely asked if they can heat the milk for me and her answer was : i cant make it hotter than it comes from the espresso machine, there was nothing friendly about her tone, she was actually quite rude! For brunch , i ordered the bangers and eggs that shouldve been served with baguette, there was literally 3 tiny thin small slices on the plate, so i ordered a slice of toast and after 10 min we reminded our server and she said that she’d ordered it, eventually i had finished my breakfast and another 10 min later the toast arrived and i said: im sorry , its too late, i dont really need it now, then she said: but its here now and i cant really return it! I dont think this is a place i’d go back to again. Extremely disappointing!

Great burger

By mapleRose |

The burger was a nice thick juicy old-fashioned one! Kambooza was like a rum sour - very good. Coffee soda was unusual and tasty! Atmosphere was beautiful antiques.

Austin cool

By ObruceD |

Great east side restaurant. Very "in" place to eat in Austin! Great food, Great service! Can't go wrong here!

Outstanding lunch

By Arthur P |

Yet another recommendation that family in Austin had recommended that was spot on. They seem too really tout the local farmer at Farmacy. To start, the bloody Mary with sea salted rim packed a ton of flavor and extra crunchy veggies, it was awesome. I had the grass-fed, locally produced Burger that had a perfectly griddled sear, buttered and toasted bun with sharp cheddar. Most places serve a smallish, bland patty but not the Farmacy. Perfect, maybe 6-ounces of juicy, flavorful beef. Simply could not have been better. Some reviewers complain about the price but it was worth it, all day. My wife had The fried egg sandwich with loads of crispy Sunflower sprouts that did not disappoint. We asked about a side on Mac and cheese but figured we could order a lunch portion and just take home any left over. Well, they offer a locally made hot sauce called Bluebird that made the local craft cheese really sing! So much for taking home any left overs! Elisabeth, our expert server made us feel welcomed and well looked after without the extra, idle chit-chat.... a real pro. We will be returning here, next time in town for sure.

Great happy hour and dinner menu

By Lisa S |

Went to this restaurant for the first time this evening. The Hillside Farmacy is a hidden gem! The ambience is great with both indoor and outdoor seating. As it used to be an actual pharmacy years ago, it has a lot of pharmacy artifacts, which really adds to the decor. We caught the last 45 minutes of happy hour and enjoyed two dollar oysters from New England. They were delicious, super briny! Happy hour also has good drink specials. My husband had their burger and old-fashioned special (only on Wednesday night) for $20. The burger was great and the malted fries are exceptionally good. I had the mussels as an entrée, and they were on par with any that I’ve had in Europe. I highly recommend them. Our server, Hannah, was attentive, friendly, and gave good advice on menu items. We will definitely be going back!

ugh and ouch, expensive hipster refuge

By Pucci D |

in a place like Austin, where great food in relaxed surroundings at reasonable prices is the order of the day, from great food trucks to deluxe restaurants, it was a real letdown to go to this place. My friends insisted, they had heard great things, but I am not sure what these great things were: the menu is super limited in choice and mainly starch-based (certainly not good for non meat eaters who don't want a simple sandwich), grossly overpriced, and it really hit the (wrong) spot by serving drinks in... jars. I mean it, drinks in a jam jar, (and some food served on cutting boards) - basically, hipster paradise. Thanks but no thanks, I won't be coming back, I'm sure you won't miss me since (amazingly) it was also very busy and we had to wait for 20 minutes.

Expensive but tasty. Veggie friendly.

This place us definitely not somewhere you go for a quick bite. The service is good, but it is slow, for everyone. So don't expect to get in and get out. We had a small mishap when we went, our order took a long time to come out (people sat after us got their food before us). As soon as I mentioned that it had been awhile, they apologized and bought a round of mimosas for us, the food then came out pretty quick, with another apology from the chef. We had the cheese plate, good, but not worth $12 in my opinion. The sunny side sandwich, which was excellent, and the Mac and cheese, also excellent. The restaurant is an old pharmacy and it is very cool. I recommend at least going once to check out the location and have some good, but expensive, food!

Had high hopes, left really disappointed.

By Tiffany B |

I had read some really great things about this restaurant, so I convinced our party to try it. A friend and I both ordered the Steak and Frites (Wagyu steak and supposedly famous fries), and unfortunately both of our steaks came out cold (no warmth, like they'd been sitting around) and the fries were totally blah. The rest of our groups dishes were so-so as well. For the price, everything should have at least been good. It was a weeknight and I think we were the only group in the place, so I was surprised that our food was not cooked to perfection. We will not be going back.

Great Food and Atmosphere

By Steven M |

I was so impressed with this slightly out of the way restaurant in Austin. We were looking for a brunch near our AirBnB and this place was recommended. The food was excellent, plenty of vegetarian options for my wife and daughter, the staff was super friendly, and I loved the decor. Everything down to the napkins was perfect. Very charming. It was crowded, but we were able to get seats at the bar and enjoy our meal there. So glad we found this place. Loved it.

Outstanding

By Foodiespy99 |

This place is cute as a button with its interior design based on the original pharmacy that once stood here. But more importantly, the food is outstanding & service excellent. Their commitment to serve food directly sourced from farms really shows. There is a freshness & zing often missing from USA restaurants. Don’t miss this place!

Nice food

By Eerika S |

Loved the fried egg sandwich and my husband was happy with his biscuits and gravy. Worth a visit. We were just happy to eat something that wasn't bbq, fast food and have reasonable coffee.

Poor execution

By Caesar S |

Food is ok. Sounds better on the menu. Service is extremely slow and the seasonal vegan plate I ordered was a pile of random veg. (white beans, kale, red carrots, undressed arugula as a garnish with a tomato sauce underneath). It literally looked like they cleaned out the fridge and plopped it on my plate. Everything we ordered was underseasoned. I will say the anchovies for happy hour were delicious and well plated. This place seemed like it was going to more interesting and exciting but it falls short. Sadly my group I went with unanimously said we will not be going back.

Great find with a reservation on short notice

By Amy P |

We arrived in Austin on a Saturday night totally underprepared for the restaurant scene/wait/need for a reservation. But a friend had included this on a list of 25 or so recommended restaurants and it didn’t disappoint. We were also able to get a last minute reservation on open table. It’s adorable inside - going with the vintage pharmacy theme. Drink menu was great and only reason for 4 stars is food menu is somewhat limited and we had a few service oddities (brought the wrong beverage, certain item on the limited menus wasn’t available). That said, I’d go back!

Great food. Cute atmosphere

By aethomso |

We sat at the bar (first come, first serve seating) since there was a wait. We ordered the kale Caesar salad and bangers and eggs with a mimosa. It was our first time here. The kale salad was excellent. Service was great and food was served surprisingly quickly considering the wait times. They also have a raw bar and offer afternoon tea.

A MUST on your TO EAT list

I have loved this place since DAY ONE!!! The service and ambiance are great and I adore the food no matter when I dine! If you haven't been - you are missing out!!!

Quant and kitch

By WhatBucketList |

This place offers a odd but yet comforting feel with its decor and staff. Food wise, things are very simple and done well. I would say typical American fare that is priced out well. Will return for a simple sit down meal

Very cool eclectic spot

By Dolla Yo |

Looks like this is an awesome little locals place. Excellent for brunch or lunch. I had the BLT with hollandaise! Excellent! Fresh squeezed OJ - very nice coffee. Easy parking nearby. Try it out - very cool!

Adrian’s graduation

Excellent! There were 12 family members from California staying at an Airbnb a few blocks from Hillside Farmacy. So we took a chance. We did have to wait about an hour but their amazing drinks made the time go by. Once seated outside, everyone ordered probably every item on the brunch menu. We even had 2 dozen oysters. The food was amazing as were the drinks! We would gladly go back again next time we are in town!

Didn't Stay to Order During SXSW

By David M |

We didn't order a thing, to be fair, so this is not a typical review. Our visit was not during a typical time. Austin's premier festival, "South By Southwest", drawing over 40,000 visitors each day, is often a trial for restaurants. Some results are of the "finest hour", some not so fine. We were attracted to the Farmacy by its farm to table reputation and the offering of 1/2-price fresh oysters during happy hour. Our server was new and had to leave us 3 times to answer happy hour questions. (managers not paying attention) Happy hour was not in effect for beverages during SXSW - she didn't know. The menu was very limited for the festival (we arrived at 3:00 PM. on Thursday) The oysters available were from New England, 8 days out of the ocean and $38/dozen.($19 at happy hour for us) Famous variety names, but far from fresh, as we know fresh in the Gulf states. (3 days, tops). Perhaps their Monday Gulf Oyster day is better. The menu was so limited that we couldn't find anything we wanted to order.

Overrated/Disappointing

By blaalid |

The brunch my son and I had was awful, especially when compared with other excellent restaurants we've been to in Austin. His fried eggs he ordered "over medium" came out rock hard. My pork belly sandwich was more fat than meat. Service was friendly but unbelievably slow and the restaurant was not even half full. There are so many fine ding opportunities in Austin, there's no reason to try this one.

Amazing little spot in austin food is great and drinks are wonderful too. It’s a place frozen in time. It brings you back to the good ole days. Must stop in and grab a bite. Come early it gets packed quick.

Cute, Quirky and delicious!

By Pamela R |

We decided to try Hillside on a dreary cold Monday night. We are huge oyster fans and couldn't resist the half price special. The host greeted us and took us to our table. We asked if we could be seated somewhere else and he happily obliged and brought us our drinks. After a little confusion on who our server would be the service was excellent and attentive. The oysters were so delicious we ordered another dozen! They were freshly shucked and a great assortment from the East Coast. My husband and I both had the shrimp pappardelle and thought it was fantastic. We will definitely try their brunch.

No Texas size welcome here...

By Celia A |

I was so excited to go try this place with my daughter and her boyfriend while I was visiting from Los Angeles.... the drinks were delicious and to our pleasant surprise, we landed at our table just as happy hour started! Unfortunately, our waiter was not near as excited about is being there as we were. He seemed like we were bothering him the few times he did come to the table. This place has good food, great atmosphere, and all that is overshadowed by crappy service. The nice guy that delivered each of our plates was all smiles... perhaps they should consider switching that arrogant, crappy waiter with the perky and happy guy!

Great Breakfast

By JaneT013 |

Had breakfast/brunch here on a visit to Austin. Very crowded on a Saturday morning, but we didn't have to wait long, because we sat on stools at the counter. You have to go up front to order. Two of us had the eggs benedict (BLT benny), and it was delicious! One of us had the blueberry pancakes--huge pancakes. He liked them, but couldn't finish. Busy, noisy, crowded, but fun, with good food.

Get the Mac n Cheese for brunch!

By Randi C |

Excellent food and service. Came across this place for brunch, had a great experience. HIGHLY recommend the Mac n cheese, it's probably the best I've ever had. They also have a great throwback atmosphere.

Charming & Delicious

Stopped by on Monday afternoon for lunch and cocktails and loved it! Gorgeous restaurant with a charming outside space. Super friendly staff, fantastic French 75, good snacks, and great deserts!

The best kind of pharmacy

By Maddie93955 |

Located in a fantastic old pharmacy building, Hillside Farmacy is a restaurant and bar that focuses on doing fewer things really well. The cocktails are well crafted, as is the food. The menu is not huge, but it has a nice range of options, with plenty of veggie items, seafood and meat. The mac n cheese is fantastic. And they make their Bloody Mary mix in house, which is always good.

Great place!

By Mr. Pink |

Great food and atmosphere! We had to go there twice. The egg and spinach bowl, pancakes and espresso were all so delish.

Always a delight! Food & atmosphere are predictably delicious, comfortable, fun.

By MJ54321 |

Hillside Farmacy has been a favorite for me for a long time but last week when an out-of-town family told me she wanted to make sure we returned next time she was in Austin, I thought it was time to write the review. The staff and atmosphere are inviting and interesting. The food is amazing! Unpretentious and surprise good! The shrimp, trout, cheeses and desserts stand out!

Yummy Lunch

By kimmom2011 |

A bit pretentious, not very comfortable for larger guests (250lbs) but the food was delicious. Everything is sourced locally and even the sodas are hand crafted. They didn't mind accommodating some subtractions/alterations to the meals as described in the menu. (Some places do)

Pretty place for happy hour

By EricPBliss |

Cute place to get drinks and a small meal--nice patio and eclectic interior. We really enjoy coming here for a nice happy hour and conversation.

New Go-to Place

By LuckyWest |

I was prepared not to like this crowded, trendy little place, and friends reported a less than ideal dinner there. Glad we pressed on and tried it ourselves! Not the most comfortable cafe in town, with tiny tables and chairs (I guess real estate is too pricey in Austin to make people comfortable anymore). But I have enjoyed several meals there now, and always get oysters rockefeller (though I don't think they have spinach--can they rightly be called rockefeller?) and panzanella (bread) salad. Entrees can seem overwrought, ingredient-wise,but have all been good. But I keep coming back for the made-to-order ice cream sandwiches, to die for. Salty choc cookie with salted caramel is hard to beat. Decent cocktails and limited by nice wine choices.

A bit of a disappointment

By Karen D |

We have always liked this place but this time we arrived at 6 pm and did didn't have good service. It took a long time for our food and we were the only patrons eating indoors. The food was good but would have been so much better with good service and less of a wait. I also don't like that the sandwiches come out with only a sandwich on the plate and nothing else a simple pickle slice or a few chips would make a huge difference. We left feeling like we were an inconvenience to our waitress and a bit deflated about our experience. No matter how good the food is, when you don't feel like a welcomed guest, the entire meal becomes disappointing.

Very Nice ..

By LondonLockwood |

Came hear for breakfast recently.. couldn’t fault anything from the server to the very nice full breakfast .. Why restaurants put arugula on a breakfast is beyond me .. that aside very good. If your staying close by you’ll enjoy your time here .. Comes recommended.. Enjoy !

Brunch

By lstorch |

After a late night with minimal dinner, our family was ready to eat. We were early for brunch and had to wait to be seated until the entire (8 persons) group arrived. The hostess was not very understanding. The waiter and another attentive woman made up for hostess' deficiency. Both rendered prompt and courteous service. I ordered the Eggs with Biscuits and Sausage Gravy and was disappointed. The Biscuits were dense and tasteless. The Gravy lack flavor and only made it taste like cardboard. Big miss here as I expected better for this place that looked rather cozy and reminded me of La Jolla, CA. Presentation was okay but savor and flakiness was just not there.

Great food, cool Parisian street café atmosphere

By Lauren W |

We went for dinner and it wasn't crowded at all - plenty of options for catering. We sat on the patio and it was lovely! I've heard it can get pretty packed for brunch, though. The food was sooo good! Love the charceuterie board and drinks! Especially the hibiscus lemonade! Would love to come back and try afternoon tea here! Love the Parisian vibe and it's so pretty & cute inside. Like you're transported to a café in Paris!

Second visit

By Jules S |

The place is cute, there is no denying that. As the name of the restaurant suggest this was an old pharmacy. You can see a lot of the old elements still present. This is my second visit. The first visit we had mediocre oysters and entrées. The highlights were the malt vinegar fries and build your own ice cream sandwich. Our second visit was better... But we did not eat a full meal. We again had the fries which are always excellent. This time we tried their Italian sodas and added alcohol. It is a really neat concept. We sampled three different Italian sodas: The pineapple limeade with vodka, the pineapple limeade with gin and the strawberry basil with vodka. They were all delicious. We knew we couldn't go wrong with the build your own ice cream sandwich, so we did that again. The chocolate chip and pistachio cookies with the salted caramel ice cream in between... Are the bomb! We didn't give The oysters or the entrées a try again this time, maybe next time. We are hoping that maybe the kitchen was just off on our previous visit. Since we last visited, the parking lot directly beside the restaurant has been taken over by a taco food truck and has disallowed parking for the restaurant to continue. So, keep in mind parking can be tricky in the area at busy times.

Cute spot in East Austin. Limited menu. Fun vibe!

By Brigid G |

The Burger was great but there were items listed on the menu they were out of. When the menu is already limited they should offer what they list. I found the background music a little loud to have a dinner conversation.

Worth a visit

By Spence44 |

East Austin seems to have plenty of food options and this was recommended to us. Lots of yummy choices and we were happy with the crab cakes and steak dauphine. The bartender served a nicely balanced perfect Manhattan for me. I'd definitely go back.

Nice Atmosphere

Visited for drinks only, but would try again for apps/food next time. Really nice atmosphere and space, bartenders were great.

Food as Medicine Philosophy at this Austin Restaurant

By Michele D |

Offering a raw bar, burgers, and home-cooked meals this restaurant was welcoming and comfortable. I had the Texas grass-fed beef burger which is a staple on the menu and I can see why locals would crave it and come often. And, with a side of salt and vinegar fries, my choice seemed made in heaven. My travel partner had the roasted chicken over a bed of cauliflower gratin. He enjoyed his meal as well. Both entrees were excellent comfort style food on a chilly night. The staff was pleasant and attentive. The decor was old pharmacy cupboards with the spices and condiments lined up as the 'medicinal' offerings for diners. Glad we found this spot

Excellent food with friends

By Ladycheree |

We were visiting friends in Austin and they recommended Hillside Farmacy for dinner. It was fresh and delicious! The service was wonderful and they were very nice to let us stay late and visit. We hadn't seen our friends in 10+ years, so it meant a lot that they didn't rush us out despite it being late at night. Thanks Hillside!!

Fun atmosphere

Great healthy choices. Seafood. Alcohol options. Beautiful old building for fun atmosphere. Also sell bakery items and sundries.
