Italian-German food combination

By Allen21096 |

As is typical when you walk in to a German restaurant in this neighborhood, there are always signs that it is authentic German. Until you get to the menu, then you notice that there are more Italian dishes on the menu than German dishes. Then there is the guitar player, though he was good, there was not a whole lot of German music. There is also a large pizza oven and they are still doing pizzas, but back to the menu items. The service was really good, our waiter was very attentive and able to answer any questions about the menu. We decided on a regular dinner and then a starter with a side for the second dinner. I had the Bayerische platter which was described as having sausages. I must admit that I didn't expect that the different sausages were sliced thinly, more like an antipasto platter. But the meat was very good and the cheese and potato salad were also good. A tasty bread was provided - though again, not a German-style bread. I also thought that with the sausage on the platter that I would get a side. I chose the Knodel (or bread dumplings) with mushroom gravy. When the side arrived, I must admit it was the size of a large bowl of soup. It was very tasty, but there was more than enough to take home. We also got the Kasespatzle which was served with a salad. Again there was a very large amount - too much to eat at one time. I thought it may have been a little too dry, though with a splash of mushroom gravy from the knodel, I enjoyed it more. The other opinion was that it was authentic, but then I was not the German at the table. When we looked at the dessert menu, nothing piqued our interest, mainly because it was Italian desserts. Though the food was very good, I have to agree about Himmel's choosing a cuisine. There are other German restaurants that have far more German dishes on the menu and if you are looking for a really big assortment of authentic German food, you might want to consider some of the others.

Good Pasta and Bratwurst???

By BRENTM1976 |

A very interesting mix of both German and Italian cuisines. Run by to sister inlaws with different backgrounds and culinary taste. The menu gives you a great selection with good pizza's and home made pastas whether it being Italian spinach gnocchi or german spaetzel. The service was very good and friendly. The dining area was clean and well managed. Parking was easy on Lawrence avenue and its a quick walk to all the shops in Lincoln Square. I have been 5-6 times and have ordered out quite frequently. I would give it a must try if you are in the neighborhood and I look forward to the excellent service and quality food to continue.

Love the Food, but So Much Extra for Subbing Sides is Too Much

By SQRiver |

I rarely give unfavorable reviews, but I am very disappointed with how this restaurant is run. The food is excellent. The portions are generous. And the ownership/management is nice. So why am I not giving this place a higher review? Because there is something wonky about their customer service. First, I agree it is slow. Secondly, some people do get served well before others at the table...uncomfortably so. But most importantly, I feel very ticked about not being able to substitute a side without an up charge just because I don't like something or greatly prefer something else of the same price range. If they are going to classify themselves as a European restaurant, why not let people pick their sides like every other German restaurant I have been to. I am sorry. I want red cabbage and spaetzle with my schnitzel. But I would have to pay an extra $4.00-5.00 to switch sides. If I want a sauce with my chicken schnitzel which I think is rather plain without and amazing with the Rahm sauce that puts me at about $8.00 extra for my entree which is more than if I ordered the Rahm schnitzel with the pork tenderloin and the sides I like. To make it more aggravating, we had come here 3 times loving it as we had a waitress who happily substituted the sides for us. The next time we went there, we were charged extra and I let our waitress know that we had never been charged. Then the chef came out and told us very politely that the waitress we used to have left and kinda did her own thing. This policy has cost them a lot of business. I subsequently directed groups we were going to dine with away from here because of this practice. As good as the food is, it ruins my meal to be charged $8.00 extra for my meal due to wanting spaetzle instead of potato and cabbage instead of veggies in addition to the sauce which seems a more reasonable charge (although no other German restaurant has done that and I have been to many).

Cold night in Chicago Warmed by Great Food

By Don A |

While visiting our new grandson in Chicago, my wife and I decided to try one of the local restaurants within walking distance of our rented apartment in Lincoln Square in Chicago. We chose Himmel's by chance since it was close, it was open, and it had some great review. Usually they only serve their signature dish, a slow roasted pork shank on the weekend, but we were fortunate that they had made some on Tuesday night. Dinners arrived after a nice glass of wine and they were spectacular. It was apparent that great deal of care and pride go into the dishes prepared and served at this Lincoln Square landmark. We both had a great meal, and enjoyed the pleasant wait staff, efficient service and wonderful ambiance on a very cold Chicago evening for these two temporarily frozen South Carolinians. After eating more than we should have we still took a hefty amount of leftovers back to our apartment to enjoy later this week! If you are near the Lincoln Square area, are cold and hungry, and want to enjoy some great German food we strongly recommend you try Himmel's. If you're lucky, like we were, you can try the pork shank.

Our last night in Chicago was one to remember

By Gary R |

On our final night in Chicago, we stepped outside the Andersonville area and headed for nearby Lincoln Square for a visit to Himmel's, a German-Italian restaurant. Before we walked into the small, homey place, we walked the neighborhood, listened to some live music just off Lawrence and wandered Gene's Sausage Shop and Deli on North Lincoln. Just a block and a half away is Himmel's and its menu, which features equal parts German and Italian offerings. We didn't limit ourselves. We tried German. We tried Italian. Our party of five came away entirely satisfied. Food and drink arrived in good time and our waiter was helpful and attentive. I wasn't sure what to expect with German-Italian but left pleased.

Fabulous in Chicago!

The most wonderful German food I have tasted! Here on Friday night with a great guitar player. Absolutely amazing dinner. Comfortable, great service, relaxed and delicious. Perfect evening - NOT pretentious - just a truly NICE evening!

Great German Food Find!

By ChgoLvr2 |

What a great find! When it seems like we have fewer and fewer good German restaurants in the Chicago area, we happened upon Himmel's. It's a very quaint restaurant which has a brunch buffet on Sunday. We decided to order off the menu and boy are we glad we did. I had the delicious Champignon Rahm Schnitzel. The creamy mushroom sauce covering tender pork medallions was amazing. I wanted a spatula to scrape up every bit of the sauce. I am gluten free and the restaurant was very accommodating substituting the spatzle with bratkartoffel, which were perfectly fried and seasoned potatoes. The rest of my family ordered the Sauerbraten served with red cabbage and spatzle, the pork shank served with cole slaw, spatzle and bread dumplings and the chicken marsala with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. All of the food was delicious and plated beautifully, I wish I had taken pictures. All four of us went home with leftovers, which is unusual for us. I look forward to dining there again with more family and friends. They have Italian food too.

Nice Neighborhood place

By barrynoah |

Himmel's combines the use of a great original wood burning oven from Italy to produce excellent pizza's along with traditional Italian and German entrees. We started with the Shrimp wrapped in Prosciutto on a bed of mixed greens with a balsamic reduction sauce which was very good and easy to share between the three of us. We then shared a very nice Caprese salad. I enjoyed for my entree the Bavarian Pork Shank which was a little crispy but had very good flavor. My two companions had the Champignon Rahm Schnitzel (pork tenderloin medallions with very well executed mushroom sauce) and the Braccio di Ferro (Chicken breast rolled with spinach, tomatoes, Mozzarella and pine nuts in a white wine sauce). The service was good not great. This is truly a neighborhood place which can handle big groups or cater to just two. I would recommend Himmel's to anyone looking for a nice night out in this casual restaurant that offers a great mix of both Italian and German specialties.

Closed No Notice

By MARK MCCOMBS |

Battled traffic for an hour to find the restaurant locked up tight and closed at 6:30 on a Wednesday night. No sign up. Nothing on the website. Nothing on Facebook. Texted the owner. Response? "I'm very sorry." Nothing else. The food at The Bergoff isn't as good, but they don't leave their customers hanging by closing arbitrarily and without notice.

Great Food, lousy service

By mstruf |

Chicken Schnitzel was outstanding. Mash potatoes with Mushroom gravy was excellent. Salmon was great. Service was poor. Waitress was difficult. Would not allow any substitutions because she thought it was not an appropriate blend with the dish. Ordered a second beer and it never came until after I was done eating, she brought it without asking if I still wanted it. Took an additional 30 min to get the check. When she came with the iPad, she defaulted the tip to 20%. Seriously?????? I tipped her 10%. Its the only time I have tipped under 15% in years.

Best food ever

By aleta163 |

This place was so good we went there Saturday and Sunday. The food is Italian and German but so so good! For Appetizer we ordered the Obatzda which is a cheese spread served with Pretzel bread and radishs. My friend ordered the Kasespatzle which is home made spatzle baked with swiss and gruyere cheese OMG the best. I ordered the Chicken Marsala which was so good, ( I love mushrooms and it was smothered in mushrooms) but the Marsala sauce on the chicken and the mash potato's were to die for. The flavor was so good.

Love the Spaetzle

By LISA T |

Beautiful neighborhood place. Glad it is in my neighborhood! Mix of Italian and German food, flavorful meals, and excellent service. Nice options for my vegetarian family. Some pasta choices, pizza, and of course, the spaetzle, my favorite. They serve the spaetzle on the same plate as the salad, just like you would expect to see in Austria. I love it, not sure if regular U.S. diners would appreciate that. Our favorite German restaurant closed recently and it is difficult to find a German place that caters at least somewhat to vegetarians. Himmel's does. My family now has a new favorite.

Loud kids bad smell

By richardrahl2016 |

We came for what we expected would be a great experience due to previous reviews. We were in general very disappointed although some of the dishes were very good. The initial bread was dry and too thick a crust. The large open area is filled with bad smoke smell from the oven. This was very conducive to having lots of kids running around and noisy. The salads and onion soup were very good however the service was very slow. Even though the place had many empty tables. The chicken Marsala was good as well as the duckling. Duck is hard to cook and here they made it very tasty but a little chewy. The spätzle was a bit dry and I have been in Germany many times and this was not of the normal quality. The mixup was that the server brought the wrong meal for one of our party. So the replacement meal was brought out much later (20 minutes) was dry and the salmon was not edible. At least they comped it. Maybe we got them at a bad day but even though we live in the neighborhood it will be a while before we go back again.

Wow! An amazing all around experience

Wonderful warm atmosphere with amazing food and attentive service. A group of us celebrated Valentine's Day together at Himmel's. The service was top notch-even though the place was packed. The food was thoughfully prepared and tasted great-each dish had a little heart snuck into it-heart shaped cucumber, carrot-so cute. The atmosphere was welcoming of all types of couples. The guitar player sang beautiful songs throughout the night. The price was fair for the type of restaurant. Average entree seemed about 16-20. Plentiful portions. Excellent Brunch on weekends too. Must check out Himmels!

Nice Local German / Italian Restaurant

By Rick628 |

To tell the truth, we made our first visit to Himmel's on Valentine's Day, because our usual restaurants in Lincoln Square had no tables available, but we were glad we did. This is a very pleasant restaurant: brick walls, pizza oven behind the counter, not too crowded, not too noisy. The Italian menu is mostly pizza and pasta. The German menu is schnitzels, sausages, etc. My wife and I both had Wiener Schnitzel. I really liked it, she thought it was OK. It came with good spaetzel and cooked red cabbage (yum). We shared a mixed salad (definitely big enough to share; nice dressing). The appetizers are large. We had their special cheese spread, with radishes, pretzels, and bread; ate lots but still brought half of it home. My wife had the tiramisu, and said it was excellent. Coffee and cappuccino served in nice big cups. Cheerful, helpful service, but when the restaurant started to fill up, they were running like crazy; maybe a little understaffed.

Delightful family run restaurant

Excellent German and Italian food! wood burning pizza oven, intimate atmosphere. Pleasant Sunday brunch

Outstanding Food, Super Friendly Service

By Thomas Michael M |

Really enjoyed my dinner at this local German restaurant. Sat at the bar with a friend and had Champignon Rahm Schnitzel — Pork tenderloin medallions seared and sautéed in butter and finished in a shallot mushroom cream sauce. Served with spätzle and red cabbage. The portion was huge and went well with the ice cold stein of beer. Located near Lincoln Square and well worth the cab fare from Downtown

Very good neapoliran style pizza. Server very kind. Strange mix of Italian and German cuisine but it works.

Love, love, LOVE this place!!!!

By Poppy61601 |

Excellent, excellent food! Never a let know. Food is consistently delicious. If you want German, best German food in town, my opinion. If you are in the mood for Italian, wonderful pasta dishes!!! Their pizza is excellent, best thin crust, wood-burned pizza in town! My husband and I love to eat here and our friends enjoy it too. The owners (who also do the cooking) are so nice and the staff are really courteous. Great location too, right next to Lincoln Square in the city. Wonderful area. By far, this is our new favorite place to go! Great staff too. Never disappointed!

German-Italian

By musiceuro |

What can we say about Himmel's Restaurant? Fantastic! If you like pizza, who doesn't? try one for an appetizer, then move on to your main entree. We have been there quite a few times and haven't had a bad meal. Pork Shanks, Pizza, Schnitzel, etc....it's all good. It's probably time for another visit! Carol & Diana, we'll be in soon! Thanks, John & Stacy

Italian-German Fusion

By walterm973 |

In a location that was previously just a pizzeria, There is now a full-service restaurant the serves surprisingly good food. The menu offers both traditional southern Italian dishes and southern German dishes. I had the veal saltimbocca and my wile had the roasted duck. Both dishes were flawlessly prepared served piping hot. The service was excellent and the drinks were delicious and reasonably priced. I strongly recommend this restaurant for relatively casual dining.

German and Italian food, Really

By Michele V |

Every dish we ordered was better than the next. The Italian rice balls appetizer had a flavorful and fresh tasting tomato sauce and was cooked perfectly. We each had a different German dish entree. All were delicious and large portions. Service was fast and helpful.

HIMMEL’S – 2251 W Lawrence Ave., Chicago, IL 60625, Ravenswood, (773) 784-8777, himmelschicago.com Was ok- Had the Champignon Rahm Schnitzel — Pork tenderloin medallions seared and sautéed in butter and finished in a shallot mushroom cream sauce – Served with Spätzle and red cabbage. It was a Pizza place at one time and now is a Bavarian/German Rest that also serves Italian food. A small restaurant that had no one except us for the first hour or so. Asked about the Bavarian Pork Shank that is listed on the door menu and inside menu says only on weekend. Waiter said the Pork Shank is served only on weekends. So we decided on the Rahm Schnitzel for our entree. PARKING TIP: The Q’s did not know that if you park across the street – Parking is Free but if you park in front of the restaurant you have to pay- Free is better. Had the Rahm Schnitzel in other German Restaurants and it was just as tasty and more meat and less Spaetzle. If you like German/Bavarian/Italian food try Himmel’s. For good German food try any of the other German Restaurants that are not far from here. Alice 34203 and 60660

Amazed!!

I was blown away by this restaurant! The food was amazing, they had live acoustic music and the musician was mind blowing talented. The décor was charming and service great. Definitely will be going back.

Delicious German food with Pizza as a Bonus

By Mary Jo K |

This is a super cute restaurant in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of chicago. We stopped in for lunch and had the roast duck and a pork shank. Both were delicious. This restaurant took over when Pizza DOC left so they kept the pizza oven and in addition to serving traditional German food, they also serve pizza. We were there around 4 PM on a Sunday and it was not too busy. They had a nice Meimi Pinot Noir for only $9 a glass. Service was quick and friendly.

All around great experience

By Emala |

Two couples had reservations here before seeing Al Stewart at the Old Town School of Folk Music. We had no idea what a wonderful meal we would enjoy! Great atmosphere and personal service. The best bread and spaetzel. The schnitzel dishes are more than enough for two appetites! Huge. Warm apple dumplings for dessert. Best German food we have eaten outside of Germany.

great pizza with good service

we love the thin crust pizza here , interesting mixture of german and italian food , serve freshly baked bread on sitting, servers very attentive good pasta choices with nice salads too.

German and Italian Cohabit, Nicely

By N G |

Pizza D.O.C. changed and reincarnated itself to Himmel's, mixing traditional German food with pizzas and other Italian fare D.O.C. was known for - same owners. Well done! Pizzas and salads, and brews, are still superb; can't wait to try the German fare next time.

Food was great

By Angela S |

We happened upon this place walking down Lawrence. We looked in the window and it looked adorable so we went in. The food was excellent, all of us thoroughly enjoyed the dinner. It was a bit of a strange mix of German food and Italian. But that worked for our group as we all wanted something a bit different. The only knock I would have is that it was a bit slow. But it was also really crowded and had several big parties which could have been the reason. I would definitely recommend this place.

unusual, tasty mix

By Ted Z |

Aside from the fact that it was 95+ outside and the wood-fired ovens were keeping the interior just as hot and the AC wasn't palpable until we were waiting for the check, I would recommend the restaurant. The menu is obviously schizy and it's understandable. If I took the place over with those ovens in place, I would not spend a fortune to take them out either. It is not usual to find German and Italian on the same menu as they aren't terribly compatible, even in the South Tyrol. We were there for German and would go back to try the pizza. There wasn't anything our party of 5 tried that wasn't outstanding. The appetizer platter was nicely constructed, albeit no one enjoyed the cheezy spread with pretzels - we thought there would be soft pretzel and not cheap pretzel sticks from a package. The cold cuts were excellent. Salads were nicely constructed and presented. The liver dumpling soup was the best I have tasted in Chicago since Zum Deutschen Eck closed. The Rahm and Wiener Schnitzels were generous and properly done. The pork hock was the best-prepared I have had in many a year. The family recipes are worth honoring and the chef has done so nicely. Drinks were very reasonable. Service was prompt. We will return in milder weather.

Great German food!

By crownct938 |

Our family was in the Lincoln Square area the day after Thanksgiving and decided to have a late lunch at Himmel's since we all love German food. We were the only ones there when we arrived so service was fast, food hot and our waitress very accommodating. Some of us ordered the Spatzle soup which was good although very heavily salted. The pretzel bread they bring to the table is outstanding!. Several of our party had the wiener schnitzel which they said was very good as was the chicken marsala. I ordered the Rahm Schnitzel, It comes with a creamy mushroom sauce which is delicious although there truly is too much sauce on the plate. One other dish our group tried was the Kasespatzle - a German Macaroni and cheese with spatzle- very good. We all would definitely return.

Great neighborhood gem!

By Jun R |

Really enjoyed dining at Himmel's. Everything we ordered would be between 4 and 5 on 1-5 scale. Don't miss the Bavarian Pork Shank and the Champignon Rahm Schnitzel both of which are excellent! The one thing they could improve on is their wine selection. Mostly Italian wines and we ordered bottles of chianti and cabernet. I think they would do better offering Napa wines.

Great local German restaurant and bar

By H H |

We stopped by during the Apple Festival just a few blocks away. Good food, friendly service, and live music. The wurst platter was excellent and huge. The brat was actually weißwurst (white sausage), which is rare in the U.S. The schnitzel was well done. Good German beer. It’s NOT Lo-cal but that’s not why you go to a German restaurant. They bake their pretzel bread in a stone oven right in the dining area. Also serves as a neighborhood bar.

Something for everyone on their menu!

By crownct938 |

My husband loves German food and with The Chicago Brauhaus closing we decided to give Himmel's a try. The interior is decidedly European which sets the atmosphere. Our group of six were able to sit at a large round table which is better than a long table where you can't all participate in the conversation. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful with making menu choices. My husband and son tried the liver dumpling soup which they thought was very good. It is pork based rather than beef based making it a bit lighter tasting. The soup of the day was a chicken based spätzle and it was very good. The soups came in a fairly large portion and were served very hot which I like. The bread basket is a pretzel bread made in house - also very good. My husband had the Bavarian Pork shank which he loved. II had the Champignon Rahm Schnitzel which according to the menu is an old family recipe. It was served with spätzle, red cabbage and a delicious creamy mushroom sauce. Others at our table had the carbonara, Chicken Parmigiano, Arugula salad, and Shrimp wrapped in Prosciutto - all very good. The portions are all very large, not one of us finished our meals so we had lots to take home and enjoy. As we were waiting for our bill our waitress overheard us mention it was my husbands birthday and she quickly went off and came back with a Tiramisu and sang happy birthday to him. A very sweet finish to our meal. The restaurant also offers pizza which we would like to try in the future. We had a lovely afternoon at the Himmel.

Good food, but experience not positive

By Adventureloving |

We visited on a Saturday night around 8 p.m., the restaurant was open until 11 p.m., and only had a few guests. However, there was a ton of staff present. We ordered appetizers well before our dinner, which were quite good, but they arrived under 5 minutes before our full dinner. The waitress apologized as she served our dinners, stating that they were “very slow” tonight. We had to ask for bread, the waitress apologized again that it wasn't delivered earlier. As soon as our dinners were served, the executive chef appeared in the dining room and began to drink beer at the bar with the staff. Given the socializing and drinking of the full staff, as opposed to attending to us, it felt as though everyone was ready to get out of the restaurant, even though closing was hours away. The chef ultimately began to clean in the restaurant while we were still eating, moving to mopping the floor with a very strong smelling chemical right next to our table. Our waitress was very friendly, the blend of Italian and German food was strange, but worked. The house salad was large and could be shared. The Tilapia was served with a red sauce which took me by surprise as i had only seen a lemon sauce version on the menu. My partner had the pork shank, which was also very good, but cold given we were finishing our appetizers when it was served. In summary, I think this is a very cute place, with a great German/Italian menu, attention is needed to the service.

Better go now because their days are numbered.

By Melody S |

My husband and I went to Himmel's on a Saturday night around 7. We did not need a reservation. We were walked to a table and then had to stand there while the hostess (who was chatting at the bar when we arrived) cleaned off the volumes of plates that were on the empty table which took 3 trips. We each ordered entrees which were priced between $18 and $23. I loved my chicken but my husband was not a fan of the pasta. Portions are huge which automatically makes me think they are compensating for no taste but the food was great. Pizza looks really good. The atmosphere was loud as there are all table and little to break of the noise. The service was horrible. Our waiter came well after we had decided, and I take a while. So long that we decided not to order the appetizer we were contemplating. He forgot my husband's wine and brought with the meal after I reminded him which he acknowledged he forgot. Our dessert was mediocre at best and service took a long time for the check and reorders despite the place not being busy. The table next to us was bought dessert since half of the table didn't get their food until the others were done eating. Better go now because their days are numbered which is a shame since the food has potential, especially the pizza.

Consistently Good Italian Food and Pizza

By PradaG333 |

I've been coming to this restaurant for years. The restaurant used to be an Italian restaurant called Pizza D.O.C. The owners are the same but decided to change the name of the restaurant and add some traditional German dishes since they are of German descent. However, they have kept most of the Italian dishes previously offered. I can't comment on any of the German dishes because I haven't tried any. I loved the Italian dishes when it was Pizza D.O.C., so I keep coming back for the Italian food. The aranchini, antipasto platter and bruschetta starters are always on point. The pizzas are Neapolitan style and are great! We always get the rosemary and potato and add on prosciutto. The pastas are large portions and the bolognese, carbonara and bucatini are my favorites. And of course for dessert, the tiramisu is fabulous! I live in the city and drive to the northside specifically to go to Himmels! I am also pretty particular with my Italian food since I am Italian. This place is definitely a winner in my book and I'm so glad that they have kept the Italian food on the menu. The waitstaff is always very friendly and the atmosphere is casual. They also offer a Sunday brunch which I heard is very good and reasonably priced. The food is consistently good every time and I've never had a bad experience at Himmels.

Little Bavaria ... and Pizza!

By Tony S |

We stopped here while staying in the Ravenswood area. It was great! I think we were the only out-of-town customers in the place. It was friendly with live music and then the whole place starting singing a German drinking song. Anyway we had the Spaetzle, Salad and a pizza and all were good. Service was very good and price was a good value.

Rare Find

By Starsurfer |

It's rare to find a German restaurant in the Chicago area (Haufbraühaus does not and will not ever count). The spätzle with gravy is great comfort food, especially with the gravy they make. There is a good variety of types of German cuisine on the menu, so most palates should come away satisfied after their meal.

Nasty manager, terrible customer service

By Katherine K |

Don't be fooled by the recent positive reviews, Himmel's has gone down hill. We used to love ordering from what used to be a nice neighborhood spot. Yes, it was way overpriced and the food was sometimes inconsistent (under seasoned, under cooked), but we were willing to stick with it. Until tonight. After waiting more than 90 minutes for a delivery order, I called the restaurant and had the very unfortunate experience of interacting with the manager. He was rude, dismissive, and childish. He was unapologetic that we never received our food and denied having even received our order despite the fact that we had a confirmation and receipt of payment. There are so many other great spots in the neighborhood. Take your business elsewhere, unless you like a manager raising their voice, speaking over you, and insisting that its not their problem when they have made a mistake.

Good food (German and Pizza), entertainment but a bit noisy

By Michael B |

Have been to Himme'ls a number of times. This Saturday, after the very cold and snowy days, two of us went to enjoy the German food. We arrived a little after 7 with a reservation (always a good idea on Friday and Saturday). Himmel's has a bar and seating. Good friendly waitresses and an accordianist on Saturday evenings. He is a fun musician playing energetic older songs. Some of the people get up and dance. Great to join or fun to watch. The food is very good, most main courses in the low to mid $20's. All have a German base. I had Wiener Schnitzel that was a good size dish (took half home) and tasted great. Dish came with soup or salad, I had a very good spatzel potato soup and finally an apple strudel desert. The only issue is the level of noise, crowd talking over the music. Is a fun place but not if you want to be in a quiet romantic restaurant.

German and Pizza

By David Z |

German and European dishes plus brick oven pizzas give plenty of choices. Eating at bar worked well for me going there solo. Wienerschnitzel with spaetzle and red cabbage did not disappoint. As good as any I have had in Germany. Did not have a host/hostess this evening and took a bit of time to be acknowledged. Be prepared for high noise level when busy.

Excellent Bavarian Food

By jfurukaw |

Really wanted some Bavarian Pork Shank like you get in Munich. Orderd them from Himmels and was pleasantly surprised. Ordered the spaetzle as the side and it was excellent , although I really wanted to try the dumpling. Pork shank was well roasted, juicy and tender. All portions were very generous. The Wiener Schitzel was good and thought it was very generous in terms of portions. Great experience.

A great taste of Germany!

My wife and I love German food and Himmel's is spot on. Try the duck you will be amazed. Good German food is getting harder to find and Himmel's is a real find.

A must visit

If you are anywhere near Lincoln Square you should stop by Himmels for Dinner. Great food and drinks with live music most nights.

Not good

By mike m |

What was once a fine neighborhood Italian restaurant with well-prepared traditional cuisine has, following a change in ownership several years ago, become a strange amalgam of German and Italian cooking with neither done especially well. Pasta dishes include spaetzel, the entrees are various schnitzel dishes, and the sides are all German. The pasta Bolognese has nothing in common with that classic dish; instead it looks and tastes like Chef Boyardee, with mushy overcooked spaghetti drowned in a thick tasteless tomato purée with globs of unflavored cooked ground beef mixed in. I cannot believe the chef has any knowledge of Italian cuisine. The Rahm schnitzel is an unappetizing presentation covered with a gooey cheese sauce. Portions are huge, but quantity is no substitute for quality. Only the pizza has survived from the old days. It's still baked in a wood burning oven and still is better than average. My advice is to decide whether you want Italian or German dining and then choose one of the many fine restaurants that specialize in just one of these cuisines.

OUR FAVORITE!!

By Kris A |

This place never disappoints! Huge portions, absolutely delicious food—both the pizzas and the authentic German food. The chicken schnitzel feeds me for days!! Fun live music a lot of nights, nice wine pours, friendly servers. A truly great restaurant—you won’t be disappointed!!

Great food, but be prepared to wait

By Ingrid W |

Celebrated an early Mother's Day dinner here with a family of 10 people. The restaurant serves a mixture of traditional German food, Italian pastas and pizzas. The portion sizes were large and the presentation was excellent. The Rahm Schnitzel was outstanding! The wait for the food was a bit unacceptable. We waited over an hour to get our food. Our table was served well after smaller tables that came in after us. If a particular meal is going to take longer than the rest, we would have appreciated knowing that up front. I don't think they are able to accommodate large tables. What was even more unusual was that each person's plate was brought out separately. The waitress kept going back to the kitchen for the next plate. I was here once before for a birthday party with assorted pizzas. The pizzas are all delicious with a variety of ingredients, but the service was slow.
