While you’re in San Diego, you need to take a break from the Seafood, Italian, Mexican, and Steak restaurants and meander up to Bankers Hill to the Hob Nob restaurant. Since it’s been there since 1944, guess they have it down on what folks like. We’ve been for lunch and for dinner, and entrees are always consistent and top notch. Where can you get a true turkey dinner, yes, not the pressed stuff with giblet gravy, real mashed potatoes, stuffing, and cranberry sauce in a hollowed out orange? Beautifully plated. This place does it right, and the portions are huge! We split the dinner last time, and it was plenty for us. And I forgot to mention the salads. The waitress will bring you your salad (I get the Waldorf cause where else can you get that?) and they bring you a chilled salad fork. What a great touch! They have turkey croquettes, yummy, liver and onions, and a lot more traditional American fare. We are always so full we have yet to try the desserts, they are homemade and look scrumptious! Hob Nob was also on Diners, Drive Inns and Dives, and Guy Fieri can sure pick a winner! Oops, forgot to mention the waitstaff is awesome too.

My daughter who happens to visit San Diego quite often kept raving about the breakfast here and the great oatmeal, so off we go to try it out. Omg I was in love❤️❤️ The oatmeal was delicious and served with raisins, nuts and brown sugar on the side as well as fresh fruit. My husband had the Denver omelet and potatoes and said they were great. The service was prompt and so courteous and the host even took our photo for us. The ambiance is so enjoyable and I loved the fancy decor. Mimosas were served continuously and that made the men happy, but what made me very happy was the homemade jam served in oranges for my toast. I can't wait to go back and have more oatmeal!

I wanted to try this because it was featured on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives. I came for breakfast. I ordered basic breakfast. The sausage patty was out of this world, waitress told me it was home made. I loved the décor of the place, when Im in San Diego next time will try some of there delicious dinner items. I will try the beef short ribs, that's what guy had. My only gripe about this place, the prices were a little high, but if the food is good I guess it doesn't really matter.

We both ordered from the “hidden” menu. She had the quesadilla filled with cheese. When it showed up, we was not sure what is inside of it. Didn’t look like cheese, it was hard to cut with a knife. I got the fried fish sandwich with fries. Fries looked and tasted like they were brought frozen and fried. 2 pieces of american plastic wrap cheese on top. Fish was good, fries not. Wife ate one of the four slices of her meal.

Apparently this place is a bit of an institution in SD. Inside it looks slightly dated, but it has aged with charme. I loved their pancakes, big, airy and light, and their avocado on toast, with two (poached for me) eggs, coming with fresh fruit. They also have excellent, home-made style cakes. Prices are not low, but neither are they outrageous when compared with the SD average. Staff is friendly.

As others have mentioned, the servings are huge. We had the Reuben sandwiches which were very good. Tried some with regular slaw and also with sauerkraut. Both were excellent. And we had very friendly service.

In San Diego the week of 4th of July 2017. Discovered this restaurant on my way down to USS Midway. It was my first real American diner experience and the food and coffee was AWESOME!! The waffles, pancakes, eggs and bacon I consumed kept me going the rest of the day. I often dream of my breakfast here... I'll be back one day.

Wow! Loved this place! Cinnamon rolls were superb! Close to balboa park. Loved everything about the food and service and ambiance. A can’t miss type of place!

They have been here forever. They have an in house bakery so definitely get a cinnamon roll. Tidbit: open is technically 7am but they had that one faithful customer 25 years ago that they started opening at 6:45am for and they have ever since.

I have been coming to this restaurant on trip to San Diego for over 10 years. Whenever I want to eat a home cooked meal on the road, in a calm and relaxed environment, this is the place to go. Today I just stopped and picked up a cinnamon roll and a glass of milk. Amazing. All of their breakfast food is wonderful, it will not disappoint.

What a great way to start the day ! Especially loved the rhubarb and coffee cake . Great service too !

We stumbled upon this place after walking back from Balboa Park. We saw the TripAdvisor sign on the outside and thought it must be good! It was! My husband had breakfast-eggs Benedict and I had lunch-ham & cheese sandwich. Very classic old school restaurant with great service! Wish we would have not been so full to pass up dessert! The times in the dessert window looked amazing!

We live close to Hob Nob, so will walk up on a Sunday morning to imbibe in their Huevos Rancheros or other tasty breakfast fare! They usually have coffee cake, which is enjoyed by many! This restaurant has been here since 1946! It is truly an icon of San Diego. I remember going to it when I was in my 30's for a Prime Rib dinner. It was one of the few 'good' restaurants at that time! Now it's fun to go for breakfast!

I have been coming to this restaurant for more than 30 years. After having Sunday dinner here my wife and I have decided that will never return. The restaurant has lost its edge. I ordered the hot turkey sandwich and my wife ordered the chicken and dumplings. In both cases the gravy was a gluten this mess and the turkey was more or less like cardboard. We arrived at the restaurant at 5 PM and we were not served until 530. It was a Sunday night and not all that crowded.

Good Food= Quantity, Quality and Presentation Excellent, Staff Attentive at all times. Prices very reasonable.

Best grilled cheese i have EVER had in my life!!! Unbelievable!! Had ice cream and chocolate chip cookies for dessert ;) great atmosphere. Great service- i want to take this place home to south carolina with me!!!!

Hob Nob Hill is a great classic breakfast spot with booths large enough to sit and stay awhile. The menu is massive and the food was very good. Service was a bit spotty. The staff is very nice but they tend to get distracted!

Overall average diner food. Hostess was very friendly, but our waitress didn’t give a hoot about helping any of her tables. The other waitress was working very hard, but our waitress didn’t seem to realize that you should refill drinks, ask if everything is ok (it wasn’t), and give you the check within a reasonable time of finishing the meal (waiting over 10 min is a little Long given that they weren’t busy at all.) Food was acceptable, no food sickness for us. Knocking it down to two stars because it’s quite pricey for what you get. A bowl of soup for $8 is pricey, even if we are in a San Diego

The Hob Nob is consistently good food. It is a San Diego institution and serves a fantastic breakfast choices as well as lunch and dinner. Try the Waldorf salad. You won't find that on many other restaurant menus.

Excellent food and service. More than enough portions. We went there to check out a DDD restaurant. Pleased with our lunch.

We found this place quite by accident as we were driving around San Diego looking for food after flying in from Atlanta. It was a fortunate accident. This is a great neighborhood restaurant that has apparently been here for years. Breakfast is served all day, which is a big plus. The French toast was amazing and my wife loved the corned beef hash with eggs and fried potatoes. The menu is pretty extensive and fairly reasonable... perhaps a bit on the high side. Service was excellent and we would definitely return for another meal - or to try some of the delectable-looking baked goods in the display cases.

Top notch. The wait staff are superb. The restaurant feels very retro to the 40s, yet its refurbished and nice. The food is great. The avocado toast is a must. The price is comparable to other restaurants in its class. A great place that t I will return to.

HKH is an old restaurant and looks it being very outdated with tacky decor. The service is very perfunctory and the staff look worn out and blase like they've been working their since they opened. My breakfast with hash browns and coffee cake was good but very expensive for a small amount of food. I didn't consider it any better than Denny's where a similar grand slam is $5 vs. the $15 I paid HKH. They did give unlimited coffee refills which is a plus but Denny's and Ihop do that too. The value, atmosphere and service is below avg so I will not repeat visit.

Cleanest restaurant I have ever been to. Place is spotless. Uniformed staff and a great menu. Coffee cake with your meal. It is a blast from the past. It is evident that Hob Nob cares about what is being served. Go back in time and enjoy an excellent meal in a great environment.

Saw this place on a food network show so stopped in. Easy to find, easy to park. Had chicken and dumplings. Companion has bbq ribs. Both dishes were very tasty and big portions. Came with rolls, salad, and sides. Lots of food and all was very good. Took desert to go....they had several pies and the banana cream was excellent. Service was also very good.

My wife took me here for my birthday May 5 2022; we both ordered prime rib dinner, it was abt 4 pm, the bus boy delivered our microwaved meals, meat was pale in color and very bland. The baked potato was Luke warm, we had to ask for our dinner salad and never received our dinner roll. The waitress jus plain forgot us. The manager had gone home so not to relate our concerns to. The waitress and bar tender were very apologetic. Envelope discounted our bill by 10% , which was still over $90. Needless to say we will not be returning to this place, it’s sad we heard that this place was really terrific.

We have visited San Diego three-four times over 10 years for a science convention and stayed at a Bankers Hill B&B within walking distance to Hob Nob Hill. The Hob Nob Hill ambiance is pleasant, friendly, casual, comfortable and homely. We dined here numerous times, for lunch and dinner, so have tried most of the dishes. The Menu is divided in sections, such as salads, burgers, sandwiches, mains, plus desserts. Service is always very prompt and very friendly. They would appear to have a policy of employing more servers than less, while still providing very good value for money. I can see why this restaurant has been open for decades and it suits the locals as well as visitors like us.

The Hob Nob is a local San Diego institution for a good, hearty breakfast. Reminded me of many Greek owned Coffee Shops. Good food reasonably priced with nice fast service

The food was great and the restaurant and an interesting vibe and décor. Service was good and we will return.

Nice ambience, nice and efficient waitresses, nice food. They serve a breakfast that will really break the fast -- portions are generous, tasty, and very pretty to look at. We had lunch here too on the day we arrived in San Diego. That too did not disappoint--- even to an Asian palate.

Coming to the us I was a bit unsure about the food and most of it has been alright but this place was a joke haha it's not hard to do good simple food. I had the eggs Benedict and what came out was hilarious. I couldn't believe it, I don't know how people eat that stuff it was s**t.

We were in San Diego for six days and ate breakfast here twice! It’s very good! One of our group declared the hot chocolate as fabulous. My breakfast sandwich and fruit were exceptional both times. The coffee cake (that comes with some meals or can be ordered separately) was tasty as well. The type of coffee cake changes daily. Our waitresses were quite attentive and quick to offer suggestions and refills. One person in our group decided that the chocolate brownie, dusted generously with confectioners sugar, was a to-go treat once she flew home. She warmed it in the microwave, poured herself a glass of milk, and decided it was very much worth carrying it on the flight home to enjoy. Everyone in our group of six decided that this place will always be on our dining list when we are in San Diego. I’m ordering one of the delicious-looking cinnamon rolls on my next trip. It is not far from Balboa Park and the airport.

Called and made reservations the same day because we had a party of 6. Well worth it! Very classy and clean. need to pay parking meter. The food was very great waffles and omelet cinnamon rolls and coffee cake were great. The service was outstanding!

it also has cozy little nooks and crannies where you can have an uninterrupted conversation with your meal. It's been there for so long the early 20th Century city poobahs used to meet and greet there for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It doesn't have any parking but it does take reservations. I met a friend there for lunch yesterday and we both were tempted by the French Dip sandwiches, which were thick with roast beef and melted swiss cheese in a fresh bun, complete with a lot of dipping broth. We also ordered Caesar side salads and extra fries, I had iced tea, and the meal came to under $40. So I wouldn't exactly say it was economical, but its location on Banker's Hill is convenient to downtown. My friend rode a scooter there and I dropped him off at work afterward, about 5 minutes away. The sandwich came with a bowl of fruit, which had grapefruit, bananas, strawberries and pineapple, an unusual combination. Talking to people who have eaten there before, I found that Hob Nob Hill specializes in the comfort food everybody craves once in a while, and it tastes just like it's supposed to. The Cafe La Maze used to be my go-to place for French Dip, but this is just as good and the fruit salad is better. They also have chicken fried steak, chicken pot pie, and an array of favorites like Eggs Benedict with Canadian bacon, which will be my choice next time. They have an extensive wine list, and they don't care how long you sit there. The service is quick, friendly, and accommodating. If you're in San Diego and staying downtown, you might want to try Hob Nob Hill - its bronzed exterior is the same as it was 75 years ago, and easy to spot. I give it a "5 star" for exceeding my expectations.

The daily specials are tasty and reasonably priced. Sunday's lamb dinner is outstanding. The pies are baked on-site and are excellent. Service is friendly and efficient. The restaurant is nicely decorated and clean.

The menu options are many and will make you return. A full day menu that everyone will satisfied. The service team was as responsive as necessary and promptness is an understatement. A very relaxing environment.

We try to go here for Sunday brunch whenever in town. Restaurant is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Recommend: endless mimosas (6), poached eggs, roast beef hash, and coffee cake. Staff is experienced, kind, and works as a real team. Sparkling chandeliers are icing on the cake.

We were looking for a brunch place while visiting Balboa park with some friends, we found the Hob Nob. The place has some loyal followers who look like they have been coming here for years, which is really sweet. The service was a little slow in terms of getting our food out but the waitress was quick to top up the bottomless mimosas and they make a fine bloody mary. I was a little underwhelmed with my chicken and waffles but maybe that is because I had food envy of the chicken fried steak. We really enjoyed ourselves so I can't really complain

Always enjoy the Hob Nob - and now it is remodeled into a beautiful, CLASSIC restaurant reflecting the history of the Hob Nob. Great food. Great Service. Always an enjoyable time. Remember some bakery items to take with you!

Recommended by the valet at the Four Points just down the road. I recommend the crab eggs Benedict with the grilled tomatoes. It was fantastic. Bottomless mimosas were also very good. I could only handle 3! My husband had the Hob Nob omelet special and he loved it as well. Plenty to eat. I think all in we spent about $38 for food and drink not including tips but it was worth it.

There is a reason this place has been there for years. It is standard American fair but done to a very high standard. Reasonably priced, with good sized portions and excellent service.

This is a family owned restaurant that has been around for decades. The menu is good, the service is efficient. They have great desserts too. My mother loves to go there on Mondays for tomato soup. Don't worry, they offer quite an assortment of delicious entrees. House made bread is served warm.

We could walk here quickly from our accommodations on Bankers Hill. What a find! There was definitely something for everyone. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. The food was delicious and quite reasonable. If there were not so many wonderful restaurants in SD we could have easily come here every night.

My friends and I met for breakfast at Hob Nob Hill. I enjoyed my avocado toast with micro greens and 2 eggs. It was quite tasty and my only criticism is I wish the bread was slightly more toasted. One friend had the French toast which she liked and the other had the Denver omelette and some homestyle potatoes. All the food was very good and the service professional and efficient. Be prepared to park on the street with metered parking spots which do accept credit cards.

I used to go to this place, pre-COVID, in the evenings. Back then it was great, efficient service, nice food, decent prices, lovely atmosphere. Now that I go during the day, the food has gotten worse, the prices higher and the one thing that really turns me off is horrible serice. Rude, curt, disrespectful waitresses. I detect a trace of anti-gringo sentiment. There's a girl who works at the register that is so inexperienced and unfamiliar with the menu that every checkout and every take-out order is painful. Sad to say, after so many previous years of positive experiences, I'm now done with this place.

I was really looking forward to eating here. Based on reviews, I expected to be wowed by the food. Not so much. I had chicken fried steak - edible, but nothing like the other 50 places I’ve had it, that knew how to cook bread and cook it. My husband expected to have bacon strips in his Belgium Waffle, not some bacon pieces. Decided I won’t try again.

Surprisingly not what you expect from the outside - it gave me the impression of an English tea room...and I'm from London so I would know. The food was good (we went for breakfast, I had the eggs benedict and my partner had sausage patties) but not amazing, and I doubt I'll go back as there are places you can get better food for the same money.

Hob Nob is one of my partner’s favorite breakfast spots, and we haven’t been there in a while. The first thing I noticed was that the decor had changed; all the Wizard of Oz items were gone. However, it still looked beautiful. I ordered the prime rib omelet and substituted the green bell peppers for Serrano peppers, and it was delicious. My partner had the chicken fried steak because he’s on a quest to find the best chicken fried steak in town. The service was great, and we plan to come back for dinner on jazz night soon.

We went here for dinner on vacation, because I remembered it from prior vacations 20+ years ago. The food was above average. Short rib special was pretty good. Chicken fried steak was very good. I’m pretty sure it was breaded on site and was not one of those frozen premade ones. The service was above and beyond. I left my ball cap there and did not realize it until we got home. I called and the staff mailed it to me, with nothing more than my verbal representation that I’d mail them a check when I got it and saw what the postage on the package was (check is in the mail, btw). That kind of service deserves a kudos.

Great food, terrible service! Waitress had one other table and was late with our soup, bread. Did not refill our coffees or teas. Had to ask for straws and napkins 3 times. Took almost 90 mins to have lunch for 4. Saw our food sitting at kitchen window for 10 mins. Waitress was folding napkins in the back and talking to other waitstaff instead of helping to get our lunch out. Very frustrating. This place used to be a benchmark of great food and great service, has gone terribly downhill. Maybe the weekend server crew is better. Lunch during the week service is TERRIBLE.

Hot spot on Nob Hill, it's been here for generations for a reason! Great service, fun menu. Baked goods baked on site. We've visited for a small egg and toast breakfast, and for super brunch with drinks and large portions.

In all the years I lived in San Diego I drove by this landmark many times but never indulged. Today was was the day to do so and so worth the wait. Kat was our server and did a great job, friendly and attentive. The ambiance is pleasant, comfortable and frankly I didn't want to leave. I ordered the special Avocado, bacon omelette, YUM! I had ordered my coffee cake to go which was included with my meal but after tasting it with my coffee it didn't make it out the door. Highly recommend you treat yourself and indulge as I did. Located near Bankers Hill which also offers a nice walking neighborhood to view some incredibly beautiful old San Diego homes.

Excellent meal for the price and good service. Came in for breakfast and was treated to a delicious meal.

We have been coming here for 30 years. Still serve a wonderful meal. The service is great. Charming, good prices, great part of town. Love the breakfasts the best

A landmark cafe in San Diego. It has been around for years and years. Situated on 1st Avenue right under the flight path this restaurant is a fixture in San Diego. Real home cooked food--wide variety of choices. Portions are huge. We had hot turkey sandwiches--could only eat half! Waitress suggested sharing which we should have done! Delicious. A must go to if you are in San Diego.

The meatloaf tasted as if it seasoned with sugar - awful - service was slow and restaurant was not busy at all. Miss the old restaurant menu.

Keep it short , had the fried pork sandwich with fries. Sandwich was raw not fUlly cooked and fries were under cooKed soggy. Service was ok, but when i complained about he food. i was asked what temPerature i ordered the sandwich at? HUh IT'S A FRIED PORK SANDWICH. . wtf Whomever works kitchen in afternoons is not a very good cook. I do not recommend this place.

Always an excellent experience, great food, employees, and decor. It's a good part of town, easy parking, good for after-meal walk .

My daughter and I went here for breakfast before heading to the San Diego zoo. We found a metered parking spot (thankfully). We had heard about it from DDD. It was decorated perhaps the same since 1944 and the waitstaff still had the dress uniforms. Staff was friendly. There seemed to be many locals. Our breakfast came quickly and was more than enough to keep us full until dinner. My daughter said the biscuit was one of the best she's had. They served jelly in half orange rinds. We would eat there again if in the area.

Great diner experience - American food in quantity. Great service. Good prices. Wide range of choices.

We walked to the restaurant from our vacation villa we stayed at. The food was good but not outstanding. The service from Melissa and Rebecca was very good. Friendly, knowledgeable and fun to talk with. We will visit again.

i have come here for years and years and it is unfailingly good. their breakfast is delicious, their brunch is delicious, their lunch is delicious, their dinner is delicious. cozy 1940s vibe. the place is so pretty and there’s lots of parking around- unless you show up at rush hour which is around 12-1. it’s right below the airport which gives a lovely view of incoming planes. my friend and i shared a plate of pancakes and it was More Than Enough for both of us and priced well to boot! highly recommend.

This popular easy to find restaurant has an amazing menu of home cooked meals, including my son's favorite, liver and onions! Not mine, but that's ok!! You get home made warm muffins served with every meal, morning noon or night. Once you've been there, the waitresses remember your name and make you feel right at home. You can also buy cookies, bunt cake minis and muffins to go! Extremely reasonable also.

This is one of San Diego's well know restaurants. Pretty much there's always a wait unless you call ahead and reserve a spot. Thier known for thier pastries and breakfast. The helpings are just about right and a great menu. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and have a great staff which are very helpful. Only downside is they are a little pricey. Will worth the effort and experience.

We had to see it for ourselves. There is a picture of cars driving through a huge tree that vaguely resembled San Francisco. Hob Knob Hill restaurant has been a favorite of our friends since the husband was a child. Our friends invited us to breakfast. Simply delicious. The Hob Knob breakfast omelette plate, the fresh-baked cinnamon coffee cake, and the multi-grain pancakes were amazing. Our server Jen was amazing. I'm hooked. But if you go, you have to go early as - we were told - and it was true, the restaurant gets PACKED after 9:30AM. Save me some coffee cake.

Sister-in-law took us after picking us up at the airport. Food and service were both good. Looks to be the place to go for the locals, which is always a good indication of the food and service. Would recommend.

We went to this restaurant based on the fact it was featured on DDD. We loved that it was situated in a residential neighborhood with plenty of on street parking. No need to feed the meter after 6:00 pm. Every employee we encountered was very friendly. The food portions are large! My roast turkey and dressing came with a choice of potatoes, as well as soup or salad, and a choice of bread or muffins. It was so good we dined there twice while visiting San Diego. The meals are a great value for the amount of food served. This restaurant has been in business since 1944. Get away from the hustle and bustle of the busy and expensive seaport area and dine here!

Had a lovely breakfast - good eggs Benedict, friendly staff. Perfect place for breakfast, wide range of options with eggs, pancakes and waffles. Friendly staff.

I was told that this place had been around since 1944 so I had preconceived idea what it was going to be....But i was very surprise upon entering the establishment. It was the most amazing diner i have been in. The Chandlers in the place defiantly added class and the food was good for the stomach!!!

I used to go to Hob Nob Hill regularly in the 1980s and 1990s and I loved it. Delicious food and attentive service. I moved away for awhile and had not been there in probably 20 years. It still looks the same - homey and retro - but the food was a big disappointment. My vegetable omelet really tasted and smelled sort of odd. Not as if it was spoiled but hard to describe odd. They certainly don't use any butter to cook these. The "spiced apples" were cold. I brought the "grape coffee cake" home to my husband who said it did not have much flavor. It took quite awhile for anyone to serve us and another while for the food to arrive. The only saving grace is that I was meeting an old friend there who was visiting from out of town Since the service was slow we were not rushed in our visit. Also, it's not as noisy as some restaurants, so it had that going for it. The women's restroom is still out of order. Also, as others have mentioned, it's on the expensive side, at least for the poor quality of the food.

We went there for breakfast and we were very satisfied. High quality of food for a reasonable prices and excellent service. We will definetely come back.

I heard that this was a historical and popular restaurant so we tried it. If it's been around for so long, it has to be good, right? Wrong. The ambiance and decor were cool and our waitress, Melissa, was super friendly, but other than that, there's nothing good to say. The food was mediocre, at best. No flavor and dried out. I would not recommend this place at all! Spend your money somewhere else.

We have eaten at this restaurant several times. The food is always outstanding, as is the service. Love the unique interior. The only downside is the metered parking. I'm not deducting any stars, since that's not really an issue with the restaurant itself. Would highly recommend.

We went to Nob Hill following TripAdvisor reviews. We were not disappointed. The portions were big and very tasty.

picked this out while driving by. Had an older feel to this restaurant (not just the restaurant, but the customers - 1 gentleman close to us was asked if he wanted the "usual"). We had pancakes, omelette, hash browns. All was good and the service was good too.

I had breakfast there on May 13 before my visit to Balboa Park and San Diego Zoo. Both are walkable from the Hob Nob Hill. I enjoyed breakfast so much, I went back for dinner! Excellent food, excellent service and an exceptional dining experience. I wish my home city had a Hob Nob Hill! The coconut cream pie was so good, I thought about it for days afterward.

First off we don't recommend the Monte Cristo sandwich since it was terribly greasy and not made in the typical fashion. The Patty Melt was average at best. Huevos Ranchero was the best choice in our group. Service and booth comfort were very nice.

We stopped in for breakfast and enjoyed a hearty meal. The corned beef hash was very good. My husband had the crab cake eggs Benedict which he said was okay. We're pretty spoiled because we have a local breakfast joint that is apparently tough to top based on all the places we've tried. The staff at Hob Nob were very friendly and attentive. We'd probably go back and try something else on the menu when back in San Diego.

We have been going to the Hob Nob for breakfast about 3 x every 2 months since 2018. We enjoyed the neighborhood gem atmosphere and excellent breakfasts at a very reasonable cost. Unfortunately, the last owner grew too old and sold the restaurant to a conglomerate. They stated that they would redo the inside and bring back all the things the Hob Nob was known for. We anxiously awaited the rehabilitation and reopening. This morning was our first visit back and we couldn't have been more disappointed. The menu had about a third or less of the items on the previous menu and left out most of our favorites. I had loved their multigrain pancakes, thinking they were as good as any I've had. Gone. One of the other couple and I have also loved their lavish liver and onions for an incredible price. Gone. Now the second dish is not for everyone I realize. But, my wife got scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes and an English muffin. The English muffin had obviously been grilled but seemed to have been grilled on the same grill that everything else was. It had a rancid cooking oil taste and was inedible for either of us. My corned beef and eggs had the corned beef well overcooked and the toast that was supposed to come with it was not delivered until I complained. We were planning to return with other friends in 3 days but will be looking for an alternative. Very disappointing. Will try again in 6 months to see if they have improved.

Hob Nob Hill has been in the same place for a very long time and for good reason. They make their own food from scratch and have consistently served the most delicious meals.

I have eaten my fair share of breakfasts but this place was amazing! The best of the best! First the waitress gave us the breakfast specials! I thought WOW, I have never heard of breakfast specials! She brought warm milk to go with the coffee which was just that little extra something. The food was phenomenal! The waffle combo was exceptional! The bacon was perfect and even the eggs was light and fluffy. The waffle should be illegal! I ate everything! Each and every morsel was off the charts. Service was prompt and thorough and the place itself is lovely. Go! Enjoy and go back! Great breakfast experience. I always take pics but this morning I just plunged into breakfast. It was deeeelicious!

The best breakfast in San Diego is advertised here. They offered a large selection on their menu so everyone is catered for. The staff are very friendly & accomodating with frequent offers of more tea or coffee. The Eggs Benedict were excellent & included a bowl of fruit to finish breakfast. A great start to the day is a visit to Hob Nob.

Made a reservation for late lunch in a Sunday. Lots of after-church traffic filling the place up. No wait for us. Had the omelet special for $13.00 and roast beef hash. Choose the potatoes as the side. Great service. Plenty enough food. Neither of us finished. Although the avocado, bacon and cheddar omelet was good (3 eggs) I prefer their crab eggs Benedict as my favorite! Uber to this location was easy and cheap. Great business since 1944. Featured on Diners Drive Inns and Dives as well as multiple other food/restaurant/dining awards.

It feels like you’ve walked in to a classy 50’s style American Diner. It is really clean and well looked after. Love the chandeliers and the option to sit at the counter and watch the food being cooked. Staff were friendly and service was fast but not rushed. We went for an evening meal so there was no line but I can imagine this is busy at breakfast and we definitely want to go back and try brunch. They had a good selection on the menu. Food was tasty and reasonably priced. The best thing ever was that they started us off with three complimentary mini loafs of breads, warm and freshly cooked, butter melted in. They were soooo good. There was a brown, white and raisin bread. Their cherry pie was amazing and they had a display of cookies that also looked tempting (so next time I’ll try them). They were good at accommodation our children. They provided crayons and colouring menu and children style cups. We also had a window view and it looked like the planes were flying straight past our window, it was noisy, it was fun to watch. We found parking outside easily but could have been because of the time of day.

Recommended by hotel staff. It had a wecoming feel to it. Staff were polite, efficient. Food was delicious and plenty of it. Prices very reasonable. Would highly recommend.

We stopped in here for a late breakfast on the 4th of July. The place was very, very busy with a mix of standard patrons and out of town people like us. The wait was about 20 minutes which was not unreasonable, but I would have called for a reservation has I known I could! Service was good and Kata, originally from Hungry, was attentive and efficient. The order came up quickly and was prepared as desired with good presentation and made with fresh ingredients. Net-Net: We'd be back if we were in the area again.

While staying at our VRBO on Banker’s Hill, we literally came across Hob Nob on a walk exploring the area. Have had 3 breakfasts so far and all have been excellent. Included was a veggie omelette, eggs Benedict and oatmeal- you wouldn’t think oatmeal could be excellent but this one was. There are good chefs in the kitchen who know about preparing comfort food. That the portions are enormous some may not consider an issue, but beware of overeating......

Terrible food and terrible service. Bus boy walk by us and never cleaned our table. The food was horrible. Seriously don’t waste your money.

I asked for small portion of Cioppino and was advised I could have a cup but would still be charged dinner size rate. Finally, I asked for the two dishes that were reviewed by Guy Fieri, neither of which were available. I ordered a hot open faced roast beef sandwich and the meat was horribly fatty. The plate had clearly sat in the window long enough for the gravy to have gelled and the mashed potatoes (no gravy) served with broccoli were cold, as my wife's order of soft 'undercooked, ' fish and chips were prepared. All of this as we listened to a new waitress being berated by her trainer in clear shot of all indoor dining customers. When I pointed out the huge pile of fat to the server and mentioned that the meat was mighty fatty, she said, "it is???"

Beautiful chandeliers grace the restaurant. The menu features comfort food. But parking is an ongoing problem.

Stopped here for breakfast this am on the reccomendation from the hotel staff where we were staying. We had a fantastic meal and great service. I highly recommend it. You won't be dissapointed!!

My partner and I had breakfast here because it appeared to be a local favourite and it did not disappoint at all. A must have is the coffee cake. It comes out warm with icing and melts in your mouth. I had the special omelet - sausage, spinach, onions, mushroom and Swiss cheese with a side of fruit and my partner had the stack of the pancakes. Both dishes were very good and we had a second helping of the coffee cake!! Very friendly service and we did not have to wait when we arrived at 8:30am.

This place is one of San Diego's landmarks. Quality American food prepared meticulously and served with old fashioned service. Breakfast is their specialty, however don't overlook the dinner. On my recent visit the waitress served my salad with a chilled salad fork. I had the chicken fried steak and it was perfect. The prices are incredibly reasonable and you won't be disappointed.

So we visited this place, known as a San Diego fixture and one featured on Tv Diners Drive ins and dives. First of all when I called to find out if they were open, I wasn't told they take reservations. They do and we ended up having to wait almost an hour. We figured it had to be good. We were wrong. We ordered a basic breakfast of eggs over. Comes with biscuits and fruit or potatoes. Boy were we disappointed. A basic breakfast for $25 ?? I would not return.

This place has been around for decades and is still wonderful. Their food and service are delicious and their prices are very good. Dinners come with pie (and you don't want to miss it). While this may not be a hip and trendy nouveau cuisine place, it is a solid restaurant that has stood the test of time. If a restaurant could give you a hug, this one does. Try it!!!

One of our favorite breakfast restaurants, always look forward to ordering my filet steak breakfast, it is delicious. The coffee cake is to die for always take one home.

First, was told 25 minute wait, ended up being 45 minutes on Sunday about 10:45am. We were seated at a two person table that was cramed in next to the wall with another two person table not more than 6 inches next to us. The food was good and our server was very responsive and pleasant. There was only one toilet available for the entire restaurant, at least 90-100 people, as they were apparently doing some work on the other restroom. Is this a heath code violation? Lastly, we had groupon coupons and had a hard time redeeming them. Front desk hostess was not pleasant. Will not be returning here!!

Whenever traveling in an unfamiliar city and unsure of where to eat, we will usually google Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives in that city to see where Guy has eaten. To date, we've been pretty successful using this system and have found some really great restaurants we probably wouldn't have discovered otherwise. Hob Nob Hill did not disappoint. We came in around 11 am on a Friday. We were promptly seated and given a breakfast and a lunch menu. The place is warm and cozy and everyone working there had a smile on their place. You could tell they enjoyed working there. We opted for lunch. I had the hand pressed 1/2 lb burger and my partner had the french dip. My burger was absolutely fantastic and his french dip was described as the "best beef sandwich I've ever had" You could see the beef was cut from a roast made on the premises and not sliced deli meat. Next time we find ourselves back in San Diego Hob Nob Hill will be on our radar for sure.

We ate at this lovely restaurant for breakfast. The pecan bun was indescribably delicious! It was warm and so tasty. The coffee was really good and hot! Perfecto. Our waitress was very effective at her job. She was very professional and efficient. The fruit bowl, as simple as it may sound, had very delicious fruit - all ripe and sweet. We both really enjoyed the meal. The chandeliers were soooo beautiful! Loved the touch. Loved the classic feel of this place. It was the perfect last meal before returning home from our trip. Thanks for having us!!

This is a charming restaurant, with the best employees. We went for breakfast, and before I even sat down, I was offered a cup of coffee (that's a good thing!). They have a variety of choices on the breakfast menu, in addition to tempting home made pastries. My husband raved about his fresh squeezed orange juice. No one was ever too busy to assist us, and I liked that the manager was visible and active.

Been going to this place for years for breakfast. You must try some of the coffee cake! Fresh and delish! Nice place to go to before spending time at Balboa Park or hanging in Hillcrest or dashing downtown. Parking is hit and miss but if you go down side streets you should be able to find non-metered parking.

My family and I often frequent this place in Bankers Hill. It's mainly a locals restaurant. This was my old neighborhood growing up so it has a special place in my heart. For those people who are visiting San Diego, I definitely recommend this place. It's nice, clean, and although busy, service staff is always around if you need anything. Their baked goods are fresh and homemade, orange juice is fresh squeezed, and they also have a killer deal on "almost bottomless mimosas" ($12 for 6 max) During this visit I enjoyed the chilaquiles. They are quite tasty, just a bit spicy. Beans are canned, I prefer to substitute for fresh fruit. Good hearty portions at a reasonable price. This place doesn't have parking (like most downtown areas) bring some change for the meter. With lucky you might score some free parking as well.

My husband comes here quite frequently. I hadn't been here in about 15 years. We went tonight. I was very pleasantly surprised. They have kept it updated and very nice appearing. Immaculate with great ambiance. Very comfortable and homey. Lots of regulars and mostly "mature" people. (At least on a weekend and dinner time). Because we were there at an off business time, we had no problem getting a parking spot. The restaurant is very quiet and you could actually carry on a conversation. Quite pleasant for a change! Food is definitely "comfort food". Everything is homemade and good. Portions are adequate. You shouldn't go home hungry. Service was fast, friendly and efficient. The servers wore dress uniforms. As Guy Fiere says, "you gotta love the old school". Great place!

The BEST MonteCristo I’ve EVER had!!! Delicious food in a great environment. Highly recommend and will return whenever we come back to SD!

After walking what appeared to be 100 miles uphill in search of Snooze, we asked a nice gentleman for directions who pointed out Hob Nob Hill which was just steps away. My husband wanted to debate whether we should continue another 2 miles uphill to reach Snooze. Needless to say, I won and we were both happy we did. This was the best breakfast I have every had in my life. The coffee cake was amazing. I could not believe it when we learned that they made their breakfast sausage in house. I could write a chapter about my breakfast experience, but I will not because then you may not try it for yourself.

Went here for breakfast and really liked it. It is a really pleasant throw-back to the 1960's. The building, decor, and even the servers' uniforms make it so you feel like you are in a good time warp. Service was very prompt and very friendly. They have a very good, extensive breakfast menu. I had their cinnamon bread French toast and my friend had their pancakes. Both were very good. It was a very good breakfast and good breakfast experience. I can see why this restaurant has been open for decades.

We went here for breakfast the weekend before Christmas. The food was outstanding, the service was great and we had a super time! The crystal chandeliers were gorgeous!

Our family likes to dine here for special occasions when we are in San Diego. This year eight of us enjoyed dinner here on Christmas Eve. We all ordered something different and all were pleased with our meal. I had roast leg of lamb (the special for $20) which came with soup or salad, choice of potato, vegetable and dessert and it was wonderful. While we looked over the menu we were brought hot homemade bread and blueberry muffins. When my cream of chicken soup arrived, the spoon had been heated. Included in the list of salad options was Waldorf salad. All the portions were generous. I think I took home more than I ate. They boxed the fresh fruit I ordered for dessert and I ate it for breakfast the next two mornings in the hotel there was so much. The service was excellent and attentive which is not always the case for a group. The exquisite chandeliers in the elegant dining room along with music made for a relaxing holiday meal. The restaurant serves all three meals, has a bakery as you come in and also has a less formal dining area than where we ate. Parking is on the street. (just writing this review makes me wish I were back at Hob Nob Hill for dinner)

This restaurant was easy to find and the location is nice. We decided to eat here because it was on the Food Network and had good reviews. It's average for food and the service was fine. We we not impressed with anything we ate. Although we found out afterwards that the chicken and dumplings are their specialty. Neither one of us had it. I had the roasted chicken dinner which was alright. My partner had the chicken fried steak which had a lot of chewy grizzle in it. Would not recommend it. The atmosphere is very old school. Quaint would be a good description for it.

I am a San Diego local and this places has THE BEST BREAKFAST! Worth the 20 minute wait to be seated!! Close to downtown....sooooo yummmy! Everything is home made!

We came here early and the place was already full. We heard good things about the breakfast options and was pleasantly surprised how soft the pancakes were. The sausages were juicy as well. Friendly staff and locals.

Came for breakfast and we both had the coffee cake side. OMG...amazing!! The slice of cake came out warm and had a creme cheese icing that really made the cake melt in your mouth! I ordered eggs sunny side up with their link sausage and a side of spice apples! YUM! The links had a hint of a kick to them my husband had his eggs with the hash browns. They were prepared eith a crispy top. DEFINITELY a place we'll come back to!

Tasty sausage and gravy close to the eastcoast style love you hob nob hill ill be back for dinner can i get breakfast all day yes

This restaurant has been in operation since the 1940s. Current interior is a bit newer, but not much--maybe 1960's. Had a great late breakfast here. Great selection of egg dishes, waffles, and pancakes. All baked goods are done in house. The homemade jams that came with my biscuit arrived in hollowed-out orange halves--very old-school California diner! Highly recommend the "almost bottomless" mimosas, which are made with fresh squeezed orange juice.

While in San Diego, I went to Hob Nob Hill for supper. It was not very busy and I was seated right away. The restaurant was quite large. Most of the seating I saw was booths. I don't know if there were tables in the other half of the restaurant. The decor is not that bright, but did fell homey, diner like. My server, Genesis (as in the bible) was awesome. She did not hover, but always there when I needed something. She was always smiling and answered any questions I had. Thank God it was Thursday. I ordered the Prime Rib, med rare, which is only served Thu-Sun. I got there early enough so they wouldn't run out of med rare prime rib. I didn't take long for my meal to come. When I asked, Genesis brought horseradish right away, and even better it wasn't creamed. My prime rib was perfectly med rare, and was one of the best prime ribs I have ever had. I was moist and tender, full of flavour. The crust was well seasoned. The au jus went well with the meat. It was tasty without being too salty. My prime rib came with mashed potatoes and cauliflower with cheese sauce. The mashed potatoes were very good, almost on the edge of being whipped. I am not a great fan of steamed cauliflower, but these were not to bad. Even the bread that came with the meal complimented the meal. I was too full for dessert. This was one of the best Diner's, Drive-In's and Dives that I have had.

Most cities have those restaurants that are oldies but goodies. You know the places. They've been around forever, and when you step inside, it's almost like a time warp. But in a GOOD way. Hob Nob Hill is like that. It's been around since 1944, and it's still going strong. We gave it a try on our trip to San Diego because it was within walking distance of our rented apartment. We liked it so much that we returned at least twice that week! Near the door, you'll see a glass case full of cakes and other goodies that are baked on premises. You'll be seated in a dark wood table or booth, and a waitress who's probably been helping Hob Nob Hill customers for years will very efficiently get your drinks and orders. Service is lightning fast, and prices are unbelievably cheap for the quantity and quality of food you get. We tried several things on the menu (pancakes, waffles, omelettes), but I think my favorite was the quiche of the day. Fluffy and light, it's served with fresh fruit. If you're in the area, stop by for breakfast! You won't regret it!

Well, if you want the standard breakfast (eggs, bacon, waffles, etc.) this is the place. Long time wait staff (a little of the rough side) will serve you, no problem. We ate at the counter (limited seats), so there wasn't a long wait (normaly, it would take 5, no more thatn 10-mins for a table). Coffee offered, 2 types, regular and brewed "specail"; we thought, looking around, we probably safe ordering the "special" brew. Glad we did, cause I asked for taste comparison; we better off with the "special". So, we're on the KETO's diet; had the eggs, sausage and bacon (be sure to ask for your "crispy", that way you would be ensure it's hot. ALL-in- ALL , dinner was still $27-30ish dollars, not including tip

We found this spot while waiting to go to the Old Globe. It is definitely a find. We were impressed with the extensive menu. The service was great and the decor so fun! We were served quickly. We each received a small loaf of bread before the meal started and this was followed by a salad offered with a "chilled fork". Nice touch! The short ribs I had were very tasty albeit a little on the fatty side but I have never had such a generous portion. The baked potato was tasty, hot and fluffy, with sufficient chives and butter/sour cream. The applesauce was warm as posted on the menu and was perfect. My husband ordered chicken caesar salad that was delicious. The lettuce was crisp and the chicken was flavorful and moist. We found the prices to be affordable and considering the generous servings, more than fair. Definitely a place we will be revisiting!

Hob Nob Hill. How I wanted to love you so much. Anywhere that serves coffee cake instead of toast is a winner in my book. The coffee cake was warm, moist and so good. Put butter inside and even better! We made the mistake on one order of getting the biscuit. Don’t do it. Dry and dense. The jelly seemed homemade and was served in an orange peel shell. Cute presentation. I had the crab omelet. Good. Not great. But the crab Benedict was really really good. The potatoes O’Brien (server Rec) needed more cook time as inside was cool to touch. Almost mushy inside. Nice flavor though. Overall we would go back but order stuff differently. This place is kid friendly and we got in right away on a weekday morning. Paid Parking out front.

First time visiting this fine establishment. Good staff and great food . Make sure Tibet the cinnamon rolls. Bakery as well.

This iconic restaurant has served San Diegans for decades. It has maintained traditions in service, menu, and atmosphere. To a great extent traditions in restaurants can be a plus. So one walks into Hob Nob Hill and one feels at home immediately. A person feels that he/she has been there before even when this is a first visit. This reviewer has visited Hob Nob Hill every 10 years for 40 years and the menu has been relatively the same. Each visit has been somewhat a disappointment, not encouraging more visits. Each time, this reviewer has left the restaurant feeling that mom's cooking of the same menu entree had more flavor, more zest, even without added salt, pepper, or spices. In other words, HNH's cooking is bland, average, and careless, without a sense of presentation. I don't mean to suggest, however, that the cooking is bad. It just seems without great interest. Our party of two had six items to taste. We tasted, we ate, we left.

Bottomless mimosas is a great way to start brunch. I had the crab Benedict and the Mr. had a classic. Beware of ordering a crab Benedict at a diner! This was my fault. Classic was superb and hollandaise sauce is on point- perfect amount of acid. Always a fan of the triple club sandwich with potato salad- pass on the fries.

Best restaurant in San Diego for breakfast. The filet with eggs and coffee cake is so good. Also love the unlimited mimosas when my wife drives. Service is always great and fast.

After picking up my husband from the SD Airport, we wanted a non chain restaurant to have breakfast and stumbled upon the amazing, Hob Nob Hill! Delicious grape coffee cake (warm!), crab omelet with avo, fresh squeezed OJ, pancake sandwich for my hubby, with sausage. Also excellent service! We will be back. We live in North SD county, worth the drive!

Service was poor, food was poor quality, table was dirty and never cleaned. Why would anyone eat here?

I had visited Hob Nob restaurant many times until it was recently taken over by the new owners who completely changed the old furnishings and stripped down the menu. The lunch offerings no longer include any plate options and instead offer basic burgers and toasts. For dinners, fish plates are gone too. With the exception of a liver plate and a turkey dinner left from the old menu, the new offering reminds me of a mainstream eatery that you can find anywhere in the country. I am very disappointed with all the changes made by the new ownership.

Had an early lunch with friends at Hob Nob and thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Roast beef hash, perfectly prepared, runny poached eggs, crispy hash browns and sourdough toast. Companions were equally impressed. Prices were equally impressive.

We decided to try this place for lunch since we were coming from Balboa Park and noticed it was on Diners, Drive-In's, and Dives. I'm thinking perhaps for dinner this may be better. The food was ok - service was good but nothing that was out of this world spectacular. Another good diner like experience.

Amazing breakfast with great wait staff and a menu with lots of choices. Fruit was as fresh as if they had the trees on site. Went there for dinner as well... amazing chocolate cake!

The worst egg Benedict order that I ever had anywhere in the World. I have traveled to 40 countries and all of the United States and this was by far the worst order of egg Benedict I have ever been served. I brought it to the manager's attention and told her what happened. I also told her that it was very disappointing receiving such an order. They took over 15 minutes to bring one egg to replace one of the other two that were served in the initial plate. By then, the test of the food was very cold. She just said, "well we just opened an hour ago and we did not have any spairs laying around". EXCUSE ME? If they knew it would take that long, then bring me an entire new order; or at least offer me a discount. Well, they did not offer a discount and refused to give one when I asked for it. I DEFINITELY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE AT ALL. I had to pay $19.93 for such an order of eggs, and burned coffee. I would recommend you to go to a gas station instead and spend $5.00 on a much better meal.

I had a lonely trip to San Diego and stayed in an air bnb very close to Hob Nob Hill. I had never had Chiliquiles before but this trip was all about mexican food and this dish was #1 on my list. It was fantastic! I had Chiliquiles all over southern California on this trip and the Hob Nob Hill blew them all away.

My husband and I spent a night in an Airbnb near Balboa Park. As we walked to the park to see December Lights, we passed Hob Nob Hill. Since the sign on the building said Best Breakfast since 1944, we decided to give it a try and returned the next morning for breakfast. We arrived shortly after 7am and the restaurant was already half full. From the conversations that we observed, it appeared that there were many local regular customers present. My husband and I both ordered omelettes. I had a cheese and avocado and my husband had a Baja omelette. We both had home fries, fruit, and toast. The omelettes were huge and delicious! The service was good and very friendly. My husband asked for sugar free jelly for his toast and was told they had none. Because of this, my husband asked if they had peanut butter for his toast. When the waitress said she'd have to charge him for the peanut butter, he decided to do without. The restaurant had a bakery case with sweets that looked delicious, but, we didn't try one. This restaurant is old, but, very clean. I recommend this restaurant for breakfast.

Best Americana restaurant in the area pecan rolls delicious with butter - we normally go for breakfast sausage is great but we tried lunch don’t miss the beef dip sandwich in the homemade bun best beef dip ever!!

Great food. First time I have been there. The multiGrain pancakes were delicious. Today's soup was chicken rice with lots of rice. I would recommend this place for a different and interesting food and menu.

I recently moved to San Diego for work and the morning of my first day off I wanted a simple breakfast at a simple diner, and found this restaurant within walking distance and the online menu had some good food. It looked like a nice place and the service was friendly enough. Ordered a simple breakfast of a full stack of pancakes and two scrambled eggs, and a small orange juice. From my experience and all restaurants I've been to, a full stack of pancakes is at the minimum 4 pancakes, usually 5. Here, I got 3, and at normal size. That was a little disappointing, but the disaster was the bill when I found out a simple, maybe 10 ounce glass of orange juice was 5 DOLLARS! I could go to a walmart and get a GALLON of orange juice for that price! I inquired to the waitress about it and all I was told is that it was freshly squeezed, but this was inexcusable, I know orange juice is inexplicably expensive and I figured it be the usual 3 bucks, but 5 is unacceptable. I was clearly burned. Her tip suffered as a result and I probably won't return, which is a shame because it seemed like a nice place, and before you condemn me, no, the price for the orange juice wasn't on the menu. Now I must search for a new diner in the future.

Very friendly service. Excellent food. Coffee is very smooth, and the OJ freshly squeezed. Obrien potatoes are my favorite sides of any restaurant in town

Ubered up to Hob Nob Hill and had about a 5 minute wait at 9:30 am. We just beat the late rush. Hob Nob has been on Diners and Dives. The service was friendly and efficient and the food was great. My daughter and I had the Hob Knob omelet with prime rib, onions, jack cheese and avocado. Along with hash browns and toast, it was more than we could eat. My husband had the Biscuits and gravy and he said it was excellent gravy. It came with eggs and bacon or sausage.

We had an excellent brunch at Hob Nob Hill. The coffee cake is wonderful!!!! I tried the prime rib omelet with spiced apples. What a great use of prime rib - and the other ingredients added the perfect complement to the meat and eggs. My sister and I felt like we were back in restaurants we visited when we were kids - what a fun atmosphere! Go hungry - the food is plentiful as well as tasty!

When we arrived in San Diego we decided to come here before checking into our room on Christmas Eve. My boyfriend had been there before; but personally I couldn't see what was so great about the place. There was a mish mash of evening dinner house, counter top bar stools and booths that had seen better days. It was an interesting mix of chandeliers and bar stools. I ordered the Turkey Croquettes and absolutely could not eat them. Not only was there no taste; but they were gritty as well. I did, however, enjoy half of my boyfriend's turkey sandwich. This place will not be my first choice again when I visit San Diego.

Breakfast was great. Had the corned beef hash and really enjoyed it. My husband had the huevos rancheros which had great flavor.

I was a little surprised by my recent visit. The waitress seemed a little short. When she came by to check on us, she was moving to the next table while she asked. Finally, my iced tea went empty...that is my test for service. Food is still great. Setting is still historic and a throw back to a different time.

Ask for April to be your server. She is terrific The prime rib is as good as it gets. A restaurant you c an talk to each other and hear there responses

During a recent visit to San Diego, a friend suggested that we meet at a favorite restaurant of theirs, Hob Nob Hill. It is a San Diego institution. It was great, a lovely neighborhood restaurant! They have a very good menu, lots of selections. The portions are very generous. The food was delicious!! The staff were all very friendly and helpful! I’d definitely recommend it!!

We happened to choose a quiet night so that was lovely though I understand they are usually much busier. Three in our party (one rather fussy about service) were all pleased with fast,(but not rushed) pleasant service. Each of us had a different entre'; I hadn't had my favorite. liver and onions, in a very long time. It was perfectly prepared, hot and tender. Shared a delicious slice of chocolate cake and enjoyed wonderful left-overs the next day. All in all, a very pleasant dining experience.

We live down the street from Hob Knob and have been frequent visitors for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We invited our friends out for a NYE dinner and had an extremely disappointing experience. First, when we called to make the reservation, they offered us 6pm and 8pm. We took the 6pm and when we arrived the staff said they closed at 7pm. I am glad we didn’t take the 8pm reservation because apparently they would have been closed. Next, we ordered our food and it took about 30 minutes or so to be delivered to the table. When I asked where my meal was, our waitress said, “oh, the kitchen told me they didn’t have anymore meat for your sandwich.” The way the situation was handled was the worst part. I was not offered anything to replace my meal that didn’t come. I was not given a discount or apology of any kind for what happened. I am still in shock at how I was treated. I just didn’t get dinner like everyone else did and nothing was done to fix the situation. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK!

We ate here at the suggestion of local San Diegans. It's not a tourist restaurant, more of a business restaurant. The food was good, the service extremely good. Overall, a very good dining experience.

We were on a DDD kick when in San Diego and this final stop completed out tour of Guy F DDD picks. This was a great diner with true comfort food. Simple menu but easy to find something to enjoy. My husband had their Chicken and Dumplings and I enjoyed a Hot Corned Beef sandwich. Really good food at good prices. Friendly service too! If you like diners you will love this place!

6 of us at a meeting in San Diego after a long and productive meeting opt for a leisurely morning. One of our group has seen this place on TV's "Drive Ins, Diners and Dives". This is no dive! Gorgeous chandeliers give an air of elegance to the place along with the comfortable upholstered dinner chairs. Menu is varied with not so typical breakfast an brunch selections. They are known fir their biscuits which are huge, delicate and served piping hot. I had the Petite Filet (rare) and eggs over easy with spiced apples. And, of course, a biscuit. The jams that accompany the biscuit are gently placed in hollowed out orange halves. Very cool! Food was expertly prepared and served promptly. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive. This was an outstanding brunch experience. Enjoy!

Great place to have breakfast. I would recommend the pancake sandwich. It was fantastic and we made 2 meals out of it.

Had not eaten here for many years, and thank goodness nothing has changed. Same generous, but not "gob of food" portions some restaurants are scooping up these days. Poached eggs were exactly as ordered and completed drained of the cooking water. Choice of fruit was a tasty mix. Waitress and team members attentive and personable. Sparkling clean chandeliers add a touch of elegance.

Great place! The service is exceptional! Coffee was good. My husband and I both had omelettes. Cooked to perfection. Portion was large I couldn't finish it all.

There is nothing fancy about this place; just good, hearty food. We stopped-in for burgers and it was great. Good fries, too. Only beer and wine, though. The services was attentive and it was truly a value place. This was on Diners Drive-ins and Dives and Guy knows how to pick them.

I ordered a veggie omelette with banana walnut muffins. The muffins are served warm! I also asked for a side of fruit for $1 and it was the perfect size fruit cup that I wanted. The omelette came out so fast. Highly recommend for breakfast/brunch.

Went here because we saw it Diner, Drive-in and Dives and we had a beautiful med rare prime rib, yummy real mashed potatoes and the best ever, melt in your mouth dumplings. Décor is a bit out dated but overall and a great fine

We were promptly greeted and provided wait times based on seating options. We decided to sit outside since the weather wasn’t bad. The wait staff was very polite and professional. The drinks arrived promptly and were correct. The food did take a little long to get to us but it was Mother’s Day so some delay was to be expected. When we did receive our food, it was hot, fresh, and accurate. If you are looking for a good place to have brunch, I would highly recommend this place. The only con about sitting outside would be the noise level of the buses and incoming aircraft. That is beyond the scope of the restaurant’s control, but is worth noting.

Celebrate the fact that it’s old fashioned. Although there’s the occasional younger one,the staff are generally at the veteran stage. The decor is,shall we say, traditional. Breakfast for 7 of us really hit the spot. Service was fine but a bit slow. This place is an institution. You must visit and celebrate its history.

This was day 4 of vacation and time for comfort food. SD is full of fancy, trendy, artsy fartsy eateries that's all well and good. I needed my comfort food fix from a local eatery. It's sorta like I have a fever and only more COWBELL will cure it thing. Found what I thought would be a COWBELL diner. It cured the fever and more. Old school pleasant décor, cowbell one. Wait staff with an actual uniform, cowbell 2. Comfort food menu and some better food choice, cowbell3. The basic garden salads were above average and exceeded expectations for a salad, cowbell 4. Cherry mini muffins were another unexpected treat, cowbell5. I had the roast turkey diner. Well it was real Turkey breast carved off the bird, no weak pressed turkey loaf crap, cowbell 6. Excellent mash taters for both dishes, cowbell7. Wifes' chicken fried steak was a monster of deliciuiness, cowbell 7. Had a tasty local brew from Mission Brewing, Heferweizen, tasty, cowbell 8. No room for a tasty dessert which I'm sure it would have been, Pinneapple coffee cake or coconut cream pie, sad to miss this cowbell. There's a reason its been here since 1944, good eats, value and service. I'm sure it'll still be serving SD well after those trendy, artsy farsty places go belly up.

I visited Hob Nob twice as it was only a block from my B&B. The servers and other customers were friendly and, though it seemed casual, there were formal touches like black napkins and warmed spoons for soup. And everything was brought out nice and hot! I ordered an entree one night and was surprised at all I got for that price. The blackberry muffins were delicious...worth a repeat visit.

from the outside it was hard to tell if it was open or not but it was and the interior is very pleasant. Comfortable booths and a beautiful bar area. A sign on the table said they served Happy Hour....next visit. Tried burgers, french dip sandwich & coffee and it all was great.

The food was very good with a wide variety of items to chose from. The Eggs Florentine and Benedict had an excellent Hollandaise sauce...so good we asked for extra sauce and everyone tried it and loved it! All were pleased with their breakfasts. The "almost bottomless" mimosa's, (up to 6 glasses) were reasonable but the server did not keep the glass full without having to be asked. Service was on the slow side but we were not in any hurry. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a leisurely breakfast.

Their claim to SD best breakfast seems spot on. Food was really solid and service was "family". Would highly recommend this place.

We ate breakfast here 5 of 6 days while in San Diego. Everyday the food was delicious and the service was great. The restaurant was clean. It was a pleasure starting our days here.

We were looking for breakfast and picked Hob Nob Hill based on other reviews. It did not disappoint. The staff were so friendly and the food was so delicious. If you are looking for a breakfast spot in San Diego you have to come here.

Ordered the egg platter which came with potatoes O Brien (home fries with peppers and onions), bacon, toast. Everything was good. Waitresses were warm and friendly.
Great Breakfast
Great service and wonderful food. Stopped for breakfast and the crab benedict is very good. Try it with the grilled tomatoes.
