Greasy Spoon

By wadev |

Three rooms and a backyard. Plenty of other options nearby if it does not work out and you go for a stroll. Smokey indoor air. Blues show broadcast live on Friday nights from the big room with booths. Rich food. Try the fried macaroni and cheese then decide how to wash that down. Small selection of beers, considering what is available in this city. Service was decent.

Good greasy late night food

Good greasy late night food

I love this bar!

By SassyGirlJenna729 |

I end up here at least once a week! It doesn't hurt that I live a literal stone's throw away, but who's counting. Holman's has a fantastic breakfast menu, and a fantastic happy hour menu, with all the typical bar food. Lunch and dinner are pretty good too. Their drinks are on the cheap, and not weak. Their patio is well set-up, and you can sit inside in the dark atmosphere if you choose. They also have a whisky club, drink all 27, you get a t-shirt and a metal plaque on the wall behind the bar. If you're looking for greasy grub that won't send you running for the bathroom, this is the place. Oh, and did I mention Bloody Mary bar on the weekends??? You gotta check this place out!

Good start to day

A good way to your day with endless coffee and a good menu full of comfort food. Service was excellent and there is always a chance to spin the wheel and have the meal free.

Best Burgers in Town

By Swissabroad |

This restaurant is a dive, no way around it but it has The best burgers in town. It is by far the oldest restaurant in this area of town and the decor shows it. Expect pool tables, dim light and pin ball machines. Outdoor seating in the back where smoking is allowed. You are not going to get truffle oil here, just great juicy burgers and lots of options to add on for reasonable prices. Great beer selection

Great breakfast and drinks

By J-de-PDX |

I live about 4 blocks from Holmens and enjoy it. they have a good breakfast selection and have a build your own bloodymary bar on the weekends. They have a good happy hour as well. Service is good and what you'd expect from a semi dive bar. Since the Timbers have gone pro they now have a section showing all of their games. Dont forget to spin the wheel after your meal for a chance to get your meal for free. Cheers.

Nice Dive Bar

We stopped in here and had a shot of Jagermeister and a beer. The place is a dive but it was still ok. I will go back here again as I liked it.

Great neighborhood place

This is a great place. Solid food and service. They have a very good selection of bourbon and Whiskey!! I've had breakfast and dinner there but also like to go and get a couple drinks and enjoy the atmosphere. Good outside area when the weather permits!

comfort food

we returned to eat lunch after being away for a couple of years. it was after soccers's last game with 3 friends. we began with a pacifico and the bloody mary bar. both were thirst quenching. i had the veggie scramble, and my partner had the eggs florentine. both were delicious and hit the spot. the server was nice and attentive. our friends were happy with their drinks/dishes too.

Get Past the Hipsters

By cheeri14 |

Been coming to this place for over 20 years and its still a neighborhood hole in the wall. The hipsters seemed to have found the place(ugh), but there are still a good number of neighborhood folks in as well. The patio is great, but would be great if they only allowed smoking on part of it. Can't beat their pepper bacon....on anything, and I have yet to have anything there that I didn't like. Wouldn't say its a tourist spot, or even a go out of your way to get to restaurant, but if you are in the neighborhood, it's worth it to pop in for a drink and food.

fun

we've been wanting to return to holmans since they re-opened with new owners who run the vern and the sandy hut.....yesterday we cycled over for the 1000 brunch.....we walked in and it was so comforting to see it virtually intact from yrs ago before covid....the music was superb, rock, and the place had many customers........we sat in the dining room with sloane's jukebox and a blitz piece of decor along with many more art pieces celebrating beer signs....they open at 2pm on wkdays, 1000 both sat/sun.....the bartender was great!....he was real friendly and i told him what it was like in 1977 on this street with sun/rosies, another dive, rexall, laurel pharmacy, blue goose and more...he was professiional and funny too.....we each had a miller high life and took a booth...next, i was taking photos of everything, the wheel, the pool table and decor....i had a veggie patty with caesar salad, and my partner had the monte cristo with caesar salad too....the food was excellent too....thx so much for the trip down memory lane....

Dive bar!

By James P |

Hey, this place is a dive bar and that's not the end of the story. They have a couple really good things going for them. The breakfast is big and pretty good. The cost won't break the bank. I don't like waiting in line for breakfast so this is also a good spot to get food without waiting. The best part of the bar is the Whiskey Club. As a member I have my name over the bar and a very expensive t-shirt. Check this place out for a strong drink before a movie or going to one of the high end restaurants near by.

Really good food open till late, a Portland institution. My only gripe is that it's not non-smoking. Great before a movie at the Laurelhurst!

A solid neighborhood option for strong drinks and good beer. Food is basic bar/pub fare, but good. Big whiskey/scotch selection. Nice outdoor patio area.

Favorite dive bar, hands down

By Jenn H |

I have been coming here since I was 21, I am now 33. This is one of my favorite late night places ever. This is not a place to be "seen" just a good place to talk with friends, hang out, drink, and eat bar food. The Whiskey Club is also a good draw. Love this place for what it is and the patio.

Weathered and crusty - just the way we like it

By Andrew C |

Tourists, this place is not for you. Or maybe it is, if you like uneven service, usually strong drinks (cheap, but not necessarily well-made) and normally raucous tunes loudly blaring over cheap speakers. It's dim and sorta cozy, and I hope to god it doesn't get bought and prettified and scrubbed clean of its beautifully blase and uneven Portland character. This is one of the oldest bars in Portland but it's not a museum or some kind of historical landmark, thank the lord. Surprisingly good whiskey selection (get your name on the ceiling if you try a bunch of them) and somehow, really good Bloody Marys -- worth the visit for these alone. The food is pretty standard-out-of-a-freezer-bag bar food, but that's not why you come here. Oh yea, and the bathroom sucks. As you would expect.

One of the best dive bar's in Portland

By Brian W |

Holmans's seems like it's been around for ever. A S.E. Portland gem, it's a dive bar to rival other dive bar's. Great staff and service. The best bloody may I've ever had and a yummy, belly filling menu. The place is old but well laid out and large. If you love a good dive bar with an awesome menu, be sure to check this place out.

Best Hangover Spot in Town

By ajeancompton |

This place has great outdoor seating and a fantastic bloody mary bar on weekends. Food is pretty decent, but it's the day drinking which attracts most of the crowd. Nice that it has it's own parking lot, too, which is a rarity on 28th avenue.

Morning Mess for breakfast or brunch.

By Eugene F |

Breakfasts can be pretty much the same from place to place unless you select the "odd" item on the menu. Here, it was the Morning Mess, which was has browns under a big patty of sausage under a fried egg, all smothered with a sausage gravy. So, it was hearty, but the gravy and sausage pretty much overwhelmed the eggs and potatoes. That's alright if you are looking for a gravy meal, but otherwise it gets a "just okay" rating on taste and presentation. Otherwise, the restaurant is a bar that serves food in an old building. The walls were covered with the stuff the breweries and distilleries provide, and there were a couple of televisions with muted soccer matches playing. The server was very nice, but the food took forever to get to the table. The Morning Mess and coffee ran $11.70. I'm not a drinker, so there's no glamour in the place for me. If I do go back for breakfast or brunch, I'll not buy the Morning Mess.

A Real Dive with Good Hamburgers

By Tracy G |

I first ate here over thirty years ago, and fortunately Fox News is no longer blasting from the TV. It's become a bit of a Portland hipster place to hang at late at night. The food is nothing to write home about, but the hamburgers aren't bad and the cocktails are cheap. The service can be "hit or miss," but overall it's not bad. The back patio is quite pleasant when it's warm and dry outside, thought the cigarette smoke can be a bit much.

Good clam strips!

By shewholovestoeat |

Holman's is a cool place. Lots of whiskey, and you can join their whiskey club. Proudly down all the brands in house and you get a plaque on the wall. Your call if a good idea or not. Stopped in for a quick bite, ordered the clam strips. They were tasty and the clams were nice size bites--nothing wrong with the old fashioned either. Nice staff--great dark watering hole. Stop in for a whiskey.

Awful. Simply awful.

By OregonTraveler17 |

Had Sunday brunch here based on the recommendation of a friend and the suggestion their Bloody Mary Bar was worth a visit. The service was appallingly bad; I initially waited at the bar for ten minutes to ask a simple question; when we were eventually seated our waitress, Jennifer, turned out to be one of a sadly increasingly common population of self-absorbed, entitlement-focused people who simply doesn't listen. We waited far too long for our food; the Bloody Mary Bar was a disappointment. When we were served I did not get what I had ordered because she had written down the wrong entrée (did I mention not listening?). The kitchen did manage to deliver the correct dish fairly quickly, but it was average at best. A more professional operation would have offered to comp us at least a part of the meal; they did not. We will not repeat this mistake. If you've read other reviews from me you'll know I'm unstinting in my praise for good food and superior service, but I am also unrelentingly critical of the mediocre, and that, at best, is what Holman's is all about.

Glad I went in!

Drove by and said no thanks but buddy looked up positive reviews so we went in. Outstanding breakfast! Would have given 5 stars but bathroom wasn't great.

Great cheap eats

Great happy hour with beautiful patio!

By Kailey T |

My coworker's and I visited Holman's for happy hour and we had a great time. They had margaritas on special and they were delicious! The happy hour menu is filled with a lot of fun options (mostly fried in some way). The patio is very nice and spacious. Great bar with great prices with or without happy hour. One thing to note is most happy hours are from 3-6 but Holman's is from 4-7 so be aware if you're going there before 4!

Authentic

By BnThrDnThat |

A real dive bar and I mean that in the nicest way. Authentic—mostly locals with one tourist (me). About 150 whiskeys to choose from along with hamburgers and fries and assorted sandwiches. It used to be a lunch counter in the 1930’s and has grown to three separate rooms and an outside patio. I think it was last painted in the 30’s also. Was on my bucket list. Check.
