I was heading to McConnels Ice Cream - just 2 doors down, and SO GOOD if you're in the mood for ice cream - and looking for a place to stop for lunch first. We bought gas at a station on the corner and I asked an EMT parked near us what he would suggest nearby. He had just gone to HomeState and highly recommended it. It did not disappoint! It is a little hole in the wall, but the line out the door confirmed his recommendation. They serve both breakfast and lunch tacos, and their homemade tortillas are wonderful! The staff are very friendly and the kitchen is buzzing with lots of people preparing fresh food. I will definitely return when in the area!

Here's a charming new addition to the neighborhood with a cuisine that's unique to Los Angeles...It's only been open for about three weeks and already it's full and busy the few hours it's open daily (8-3). The owner, who by the way is there every day attending to every detail no matter how small, believes in starting small and providing excellent service and food before expanding too much and maybe falling short of expectations, a wise decision in my opinion. The menu is Tex-Mex but with the special touches common to the Austin area. You order when you come in and then take a seat at the cute picnic tables or outside on tables on the sidewalk and wait for your food to be brought to you. It's quick in getting to the table and fun to eat. Home-made 'aguas frescas' are prepared daily (ours was grapefruit and mint and a perfect accompaniment to the food). We ordered two tacos: a beef brisket and a chicken, charro-style beans and a Frito Pie in a Bag (a fun concoction consisting of a bag of Fritos corn chips topped with chili con carne, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, jalapeno peppers and cream...quite tasty and a delight to eat). They make their own flour tortillas, which puts them ahead of most places that buy them commercially. We also tried the fried bunuelos in a bag and the chocolate Frito haystacks for dessert...yummy, especially the haystacks that combine the salty crunch of the Frito chips with luscious dark chocolate.

Every time we come to LA to visit our son this is a required stop. The first time we came I noted the tacos are named for Texas rivers. This is a very busy place, but it rocks the breakfast taco world. I do not know how they get so many people through the door.

During these crazy times Homestate has made it easy to order and pick up any of their delicious tacos. Thanks

Excellent for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Only thing I was disappointed in was that I found this fantastic place late in my holiday. The veggie tacos were all beautiful and so were the sides. We sat outside and it was clean and well staffed. Would highly recommend the potatoes sides, they were so addictive, especially with the complimentary sauces! Thanks for having us!

Thanks to the interwebs, HOMESTATE was chosen as having one of the top ten tacos in town. And they were right! Easy to find and easy to get in (especially if you get there right before 8am when they open), HOMESTATE is a cool, cozy, cramazy good place to grab breakfast or lunch. They feature all homemade ingredients (the corn tortillas are not made on premises, but daily from a local bakery) and stellar service. Do not miss their fresh red and green chile sauce. I had the Pecos and Guadalupe tacos, both fresh and flavorful. Coffee was good too. Some advise/observations: The line looks long, but that's because the register is right by the front door, so don't let that scare you. And management, maybe you move the register in a bit more, as often a long line might mean some folks would think the wait too long and miss out on some of the best breakfast food in SoCal.

So happy to finally visit HomeState. Worth the wait for perfect Texas brisket in migas, tacos and sandwiches. The queso is also delicious. We had three generations at the table and everyone was happy - even the vegetarians. Order at counter; food is delivered to your table. Tables inside and on the sidewalk. This is not Mexican food, but that is the closest choice offered on this website. This is Texan food.

Great Texas food. Love the atmosphere and the Texas vibe. Tasty tacos and quest! It was busy but fast to get service.

This was an amazing find! Was looking for Chili and found this great little Texas restaurant just on the outskirts of Hollywood on the east side. only open from 7am to 3pm but well worth the trip! I think they are famous for their taco breakfast they serve all day but they the lunch menu is excellent too! tacos, sandwiches, black bean dishes and, of course, the Frito Pie! Highly recommended if you are craving some good texas food! They do takeout and catering too! Sorry about the picture as I was too late when I thought about taking the photo!

Great tacos. They offer both breakfast tacos and lunch/regular tacos. My favorite was the comel (eggs, black beans, and cheese). My least favorite was the blanco. It was just okay with not that much flavor. But we also got queso and that was delicious! It’s a small space so expect to possibly eat outside or get it to go.

Quite a busy place with small line up. There are a lot of staff and they are all purposeful and efficient. Drank an nice strong cup of coffee while waiting for my loaded Lonestar Migas to go. All the other food I saw looked great. Loved the flavor combination in the migas. Maybe a bit heavy on the onion if you don't like that. Delicious beans. Friendly staff.

We were introduced to Homestate by my stepson (Hollywood location) and were really taken with their breakfast tacos. Since then, they opened a spot in Playa Vista where we went for dinner last evening. It did not disappoint. The tacos were great including freshly made tortillas, fresh ingredients, nicely sized (not huge) and filling. They also have a liquor license, a definite plus, and the spicy Paloma they served had enough tequila in it that you could taste it throughout the entire drink (so rare in LA). They seem to not skimp on anything. There's a walk up counter to order, a nice patio plus indoor seating, and eager, polite folks working who aim to please. I wish there were another in Santa Monica, or the Palisades, so we could pop over more frequently. It's a winner!

Delicious breakfast burritos, worth the wait, line moves quickly. Tried the vegetarian burrito, good value, add guacamole. Also try the egg scramble with corn chips, never had it before, loved it, the chips add a great crunch and the home made salsa adds a tasty hit of heat.

We stopped for tacos in the evening for tacos. Order at the counter, pay and they will bring you your order. People also order carry outs. Everything was very tasty. I will definitely eat here again and I recommend! Street parking is available across the street.

We were there for breakfast, had a Guadalupe Taco, a Cowboy Cup (frijoles, guacamole, poco de gallo an some more greens) and guacamole with chips. We didn't have the much vaunted flour tortillas because we love corn tortillas so much. The first thing we noticed was the professional, always friendly and helpful staff - actually the first thing we noticed was the line in which we had to wait, but not too long. - And when we had our food after a short time of waiting we were completely happy. We are quite picky, especially concerning mexican food. And this of course isn't real mexican and more meant to be texas-style. But there is nothing, we could wish to be done any better. And I could eat one of these Cowboy Cups every day. A perfect mixture of heartyness and freshness.

This is a funky little cafe with bar seating, table seating inside and out, and takeout. It specializes in Texas style brisket and tacos and makes fresh coleslaw, guacamole, tortillas - all fresh ingredients. They have a line of boutique sodas and serve fresh coffees and teas. A great stop for breakfast, lunch or supper. Very tasty. Extremely casual but frequented by local hospital staff and business people. Many young people, couples, and groups of friends.

We love their tacos! First of all, the staff are extremely nice and helpful! The tacos taste fresh, healthy and delicious! We enjoy going here. We live 4 hours away, but come to Los Angeles every 4 months. We love to stop at this place.

Excellent tacos. Definitely try the house made flour tortillas. The seasonal iced teas also really worth trying. Breakfast tacos are excellent, including the ones with eggs/beans and the brisket taco.

Awesome food - cheap with great service. Vegans really satisfied - would go again with adult kids. Cool vibe and great staff

We were looking for a place to eat after hiking in Griffith Park and found this through yelp. The food is shockingly good. I had a brisket taco, chicken taco and a small queso and chips. My wife had the kale cabbage salad and a potato taco. She ended up wanting more potato tacos. Had we had more time, I would have ordered another round of food. The queso is excellent and has just enough spice. I look forward to trying more items next time we go. If you're in Los Feliz, eat here. It's worth any wait they might have.

So many options to choose from but I narrowed it down to the black bean and cheese , Ground beef, potatoes eggs and bacon tacos. So delicious!!

Anything you order will be good! Whatever you're in the mood for, you won't go wrong. Great service, great value and best quality products! I had breakfast and lunch here everyday i was in Los Angeles! Don't miss out! My usual picks are the Neches and Guadalupe on flour tortilla. And, oooh there's Frito Pie!! The Queso is addicting! Fresh Orange juice and best coffee I've had when dining out!

The food is good, service good. They make their own homemade flour tortillas, much tastier than the corn, which I only had because they made a mistake with my order. I ordered two tacos and asked for flour, yet one came with corn. Had the Trinity and Neches tacos, very good, but very tiny. Would not recommend the extra avocado, not very generous. Would recommend skipping the coffee bar, a bit too expensive for a latte, you can go to any coffeebar nearby for a more reasonable portion & price. Again, food was good, but small portions and no place to sit. There is indoor & outdoor seating, but packed on the weekends. There were two tables outside with no shade or umbrella, but sitting in direct California sunlight during the summer is not my idea of comfortable for brunch. Maybe at the beach for a short time, but not so much for any meal. Suggest taking it to go and eating at the bar a couple of doors down, they allow customers to eat there (so long as you buy a drink from the bar, which is a better option than the coffee). Bar had excellent service.

Looking for a place to eat and we saw a huge line in front of this bistro, so we stopped and enjoyed amazing brunch, eggs served all day, home made flour tortillas, beautiful interior and nice seating outside. Food was served super quick and very delicious!

As a recent transplant to LA, I have been missing breakfast tacos. While the ones at HomeState aren't exactly like the ones I walked to three blocks from my place in Dallas, they may be an improvement. The ingredients are California-clean and Texas-flavored. The line on a Saturday morning is intimidatingly long, and well worth the wait. The tacos were SO GOOD and I appreciate they had the non-potato version. The agua fresca was deliciosa, and even if you think you don't want it at the time, get a salted chocolate chip cookie to go. RIDICULOUS. Delicious. So excited to hvae this old HomeState represented in my new home state.

See the menu? Order one of everything! Awesome tacos, awesome queso, awesome food. It is a bit cramped, there can be quite a line but don’t let it intimidate you. It typically moves pretty quick. They have two tables sauces on offer, a red and green. My only complaint would be that I wish they had something further up the Scoville scale for people looking for a face melter. Maybe they did, and I just didn’t ask for it?

I've never had Tex Mex before. But now I'm obsessed. I tried three of the tacos and the queso. So freaking delicious.

The first time we tried this place it was REALLY good. There was a long line but it was worth it. This time there wasn’t a line but the food was nowhere as good as the last time. It wasn’t bad, but for the prices I expect the quality to be maintained. We don’t make it to this area that often but are excited when we are to go back. Not sure we will come back after this trip. We will probably try a new place next time we are in the area. Our chips and Queso took to long as well. It should literally be sitting there ready to serve. Just dish it up and bring it out. If they were busy I would understand but like I said they were not this visit. We are guessing a chance of Management or Ownership.

While breakfast burritos are on every block in LA, the Los Feliz HomeState is one of the few spots for breakfast tacos (2 tacos = one burrito in size). This is indeed what you will find in Texas, especially the Austin area. The female owned and managed cafe has about ten taco offerings - all named after Texas rivers. Egg and cheese, egg and mushroom, egg and brisket, chili, black bean were sampled at our table and all were excellent. Several drink options, including coffee, as well as guacamole and chips - but tacos are the star here.Order at the counter and they bring it to you. Good service and both indoor and sidewalk-patio seating. There will be a line out the door during peak hours, especially weekends. Overall highly recommend for a great Texas breakfast taco and (once you get in the door) quick and friendly service.

Learned about this place via the YouTube show "Worth It". It's a smaller place in a strip along a main drag where you order at the counter, take a number, and they bring it to you. The menu is vegetarian-friendly. My family ordered 8 tacos ($3.50 each) along with a Big Guacamole ($8.00, you get bottomless chips with this). We had a seat at one of their picnic-style tables and our order came out in about 5 minutes it seemed. The guac was good and chunky. For tacos, I ordered Blanco (egg whites, mushrooms, monterey jack) and the Potato (potato, cheddar, guac, sour cream, cabbage, pico, jalapeño). They both tasted good, not overly large, but not the smallest I've had either. Overall, a good meal and we would return.

I love this new spot in Los Feliz. The menu is simple and delicious. They have as many breakfast tacos as they do lunch tacos, which is awesome. And they make their own flour tortillas, so definitely go for those. The "Pecos" taco is a must. I also love the "Trinity". I prefer the breakfast tacos to the lunch ones. I also tried the chicken sandwich today. Very good. The coffee is also excellent.

I left Texas in 1989 and have craved the Mexican food ever since I left. You just can't find anything comparable in Los Angeles until now. HomeState is quick, cheap, easy to eat on the go and reminiscent of home. After my first breakfast here, I went back that same afternoon for brisket tacos. This is my new favorite place to eat!

I would highly recommend home state in Hollywood if you wanna good meal for something that’s great finally lots of choices but there’s a bit of a line in the morning

Great restaurant with very good Mexican specialties at a more than reasonable Award Terrace on the sidewalk that allows you to enjoy LA on a not too busy street and take your time to taste. I recommend without reservation! A must do after the Observatory visit

For breakfast tacos, Homestate is a must visit for me. Their Texas style tacos are $3.50 each. My go to order is a Guadalupe taco which has eggs, chorizo and cheddar and a Pecos taco which has egg and shredded brisket. I usually order a side of the Loaded Queso with chips and drop a little of the queso in my tacos. So good! The line can be long during peak times and I always found parking to be difficult as it’s just street parking.

My son saw them on buzz feed. It exceeded our expectations x 100. We kept ordering more. Trinity, brisket all good. Coffee is excellent too. Great efficient friendly service. Take out is available too. Be sure to check it out. Line goes fast.

We eat here with work a lot. If you were driving by, you might miss it- if it weren't for the line of people spilling out onto the sidewalk. This circumstance tells you two things: 1) Their seating inside is very limited, maybe three tables. 2) The food is good enough to wait in line for. But are accurate! There are some outside tables, but still pretty limited with the crowd that Homestate draws. Their menu wording/layout is a little unconventional, but you'll figure out whether you want daytime tacos or breakfast tacos. I'm a vegan, so I only have a couple of options here, but what I've had has been really good. Heads up- the flour tortillas have dairy in them. I like that they serve coffee here, but I only made the mistake of ordering a drink here one time. I got a lemonade and the small plastic cups they use don't hold $3.50 worth of a beverage to me. Minor complaint. The food is great though.

Tasty breakfast tacos, especially loved the flour tortillas. Wished they had Pico de Gallo, I think that would have added a missing element. Overall yummy spot for breakfast, be sure to snag a table outside!

Great for tacos especially the brisket. Good price for breakfast. Very popular so may have to wait. Lovely if you can get a seat outside.

Delicious tacos. I had chicken. We shared potatoes and cheese dip. Water is available. We sat outside on a nice evening. I recommend for tasty tacos!

Quality ingredients, great hospitality, sweet tunes, beautiful people and their dogs. The food is so good, I could eat here every day (and do).

Inviting place! Delicious tacos! Had the Trinity and Picadillo tacos with their in house made flour tortilla and some Guacamole and Chips. Nice atmosphere, good food!

I went here a couple of times on my recent trip to Los Angeles. It's Tex-Mex right in LA. Very cool place with a great menu. Tacos are their specialty but I had the Migos which was basically scrambled eggs with brisket. Delicious. Service was great. Totally recommend.

Parking is tough around here but worth it- we stopped here with friends after a hike and my husband and I are eating vegetarian so we sampled their vegetarian "anytime' and "breakfast" tacos (Comal, Emo's, and Blanco) which were all super tasty. We couldn't find seating inside or outside but got it to go and ate nearby. The food was well priced and tasty as were the salsas. I got corn tortillas which were good but fell apart a bit so would recommend the flour tortillas. We also got a side of the "big" guacamole size and a huge bag of tortilla chips and everything was great - will definitely by back! The seasonal iced tea was also delicious and refreshing.

You will. It be disappointed. We all have our own standards for best, but everyone is likely to agree this place does what they do very well.

This restaurant made my day. Went there due to the high ratings and that i hadn't had a good meal since arriving in SoCAL. I was super impressed with the flavor in the three tacos i had (Brisket, picadillo, and chicken on flour tortilla). I couldn't believe how much i was smiling after eating the tacos ( like a kid in a candy store) I sent a message to my friends telling them to put this place on the "must do" when coming to Hollywood. Definitely worth the hour drive...so very satisfied

Had some great breakfast tacos this morning with wife, daughter and granddaughter. Splurged with the Loaded Chile con Queso...delicious. Lots of ex-Texans there but it was early Sunday morning so no lines. Owner Brianna (sp) Valdez had a short interview on local news channel this week so we decided to drive 35 miles to taste for ourselves. We were not disappointed! She has great staff working for her, too! Next time we will try the homemade flour tortillas; the homemade corn were the best we've had since leaving San Antonio in 1996...make the drive; it's worth it! Thanks for a great breakfast, HomeState!

Every time I go to Los Angeles I have to go eat breakfast tacos at HomeState. That's right, breakfast TACOS. Best ever and moderately price. Service is friendly and fast.

Unfortunately Hotel Hollywood was without power during the storm with no back up generater, we had to venture out for breakfast, this little hide away had a line waiting to get in, so we decided to try it for breakfast and I needed COFFEE! Services were great, food was good Tex-Mex not a fancy place decorated appropriately for their service. I recommend!

If you're fed up with Dennys style, you have to check out this unique place! Great atmosphere, tasty breakfast tacos! You'll love it!

mediocre at best. honestly, it's like my kid brother got into the kitchen and is learning how to cook. i had high hopes by the concept and description of the restaurant but... ok so you counter order and it's all in a kinda do it yourself take out style, almost food truck but not which is a fun and cool concept, but... the food was just greasy, the brisket was not made fresh to order, and just tasted mediocre at best. sad and i'm not sure why all the great reviews. i mean i get the cool hipster vibe but come on people, that's not enough, not even if it's your friend's joint. sorry but do better guys. hipster doesn't need to mean having a stomach ache from the unnecessary grease in your food. i will say the guacamole was pretty good but... the migas... grossly greasy, not well balanced between eggs and cheese and chips... the tacos just ok... yuca's is just on the corner an SO much better. we tried the brisket taco, the chicken taco and the potato... the chicken was the best of the 3 but still not worth it. disappointed :(

As our last lunch in LA we opted for this place which I had read good reviews about on Trip. Maybe I didn't even dare hope so much. Excellent choice with vegetarian and vegan options too. The tacos are really good but not large so you need two to fill up. But the prices are really low, given the location. Even for drinks. Water is free, even for dogs. Cozy and clean room, like the bathroom. Ready and kind staff. Difficult to find better!

Queso should always be a breakfast food. We ordered several breakfast tacos (trinity was delicious!) and chips and queso. Everything was good. The store opened at 8, we arrived around 8:05 on a Saturday to find a line out the door. The line moved quickly, however, and by the time we left around 9, the line had basically disappeared. Cool atmosphere. Paid street parking. Some seating available (indoor and outdoor), takeout seemed popular.
Ahhhhhmazing
Friends and I were looking for a quick meal. Someone recommended this spot. The tacos were great! Breakfast tacos were also a hit! I recommend the brisket tacos. The meat was seasoned very well. Not really big, but great for a quick meal to go. If I'm ever back in the area I must go back for tacos!
