Won Tons 'R Hon's

By SgtBuffy |

Whenever we visit San Francisco, we always stop by Hon's Wun Ton for their wonton noodle soup and pork knuckles. Mr. Hon has perfected his won tons down to a science. Once you order, Mrs. Hon will be bringing your order within 3 minutes flat! The prices are about the cheapest you will find in SF, but this is not a place with atmosphere or ambiance. It is your quintessential hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant in Chinatown.

Fresh and handmade dumplings

By Vu D |

Great fresh made food, especially the dumplings I just love when you can look into the kitchen and watch the preparing process

Love this place --- awesome hole in the wall

By marcsoong |

Don't come here if you are looking for something fancy. Service is so so, not the nicest place, and many other things you can complain about. The food is great though. Perfect hole in the wall chinese restaurant. Everything for me is good. Order noodle soup, dry noodles, and the curry beef tendon. Great meal!!! Don't expect a five star hotel and you will enjoy yourself. Been eating here since the mid 90's as my grandmother loved eating here. Still tastes good to me! Note: I order additional toppings and add to my noodle soup if you find the toppings little, Do the same! Enjoy! A dying breed of hole in the wall awesomeness! Just enjoy the experience... If you go back enough, they start becoming nicer To you as well!! ;-P

Great find!

By Matt W |

Hole in the wall eatery straight out of Hong Kong. Great noodles and won “tun” soup was offering more soup. Friendly service authentic and very affordable!

Great food!

By Denny |

China town was quiet the evening we visited but Hon’s was busy with locals and tourists alike. The food was plentiful and tasty, the restaurant is basic and service a little surly but definitely worth a visit!

try something different from crowded chinatown restaurants

By petitelulu83 |

We found this tiny restaurant in a guide and it is a bit off the main streets in Chinatown but it was a good choice, the range of food is not wide but we were hungry in the middle of the afternoon and it was perfect for us , I loved my noodles and the dumplings , it is not so expensive and it seemed clean and hygienic, which was not the case in some other Chinese restaurants and they did not harangue us in the street to come and eat , which also happened in other Chinese restaurants nearby.. Basic, simple and cheap.

Authentic and Worth A Try!

By Jessie O |

I found out about this place about a year and I've been going there for lunch at least once every two weeks since then. I always got the Won Ton Noodles, but I've seen many others who ordered the Beef Brisket Noodles/Ngau Lam Min. Their noodles is the best! And I love their chili sauce as well. The portion isn't huge but it would be just enough for me so that I wouldn't be in a food coma when I get back to work after. It was $6.30 per bowl of Won Ton Noodles when I started going there but the last few weeks it went up to $6.90.

Go if you want Food poisoning for $10

By M2C016 |

I ordered a beef rice dish, but was persuaded by the chef too get the 'famous curry' instead. It came out in 2 min. Myself and my wife ate it - ok, not bad, but we both spent the rest of the night on the toilet vomiting/diarrhoea. Awful experience, and upset we got sold a dish that was standing all day just so they could get rid of it. Go here is you want food poisoning for $10 per dish. My kids had the Wonton soup and were fine. However this dinner totally ruined our experience of Chinatown.

Great food

By Jimmy |

Hon’s has great food at relatively low cost. Our family of 5 had dinner and a drink for a total of $50. The stewed beef brisket with wun-tun noodle soup (#10) is excellent. A small restaurant but it was packed the whole time we were there and a line formed out the front. It closes early, around 7pm, so plan to eat after walking around town or the shops.

Great for budget travelers

By LindaRoo |

Came here for lunch and ordered wun tun soup, Szechuan Sauce Over Noodle, and Dumpling (Shrimp, Pork, Bamboo Shoots & Mushrooms) Noodle Soup. Prices were $4.99-$5.25 per dish. Our favorite was the wun tun soup which we would definitely order again. Place is a hole in the wall but good and cheap.

Best Dumplings

By Hugh L |

Hon's is basically next door to the Hilton in the Financial District. Great dumplings with BBQ pork and noodles to boot. Slurp some up.

Authentic cuisine with large portions and reasonable prices

By Michael the Greek |

Found by chance strolling through Chinatown. The dumplings are made by chefs behind a shop window. In the restaurant there were mainly Asian-born guests, so we expected to be served mostly authentic cuisine. And so it was. Similarly, we ate in Hongkonk. Attention: very rich portions!

Great value for money

By Luiz Felipe Azevedo |

Great option for those who want to eat well and cheaply. Chinatown is a little different for Brazilians, but in this place I can say that you will eat very well!

Awful

By Badiha |

Not sure how this joint ended up in my city guide but that's the reason why we had lunch here. First of all, the restaurant itself looks absolutely dirty. Don't even want to start with the bathroom (leaking from the fan, the floor was damp), the kitchen looked awful as well. Now comes the beef noodle soup. I got 3 super tiny chunks of beef and about 3/4 chunks of fat cubes. The noodles were not cooked enough so it was still dry in my bowl. AND the bowl itself was SUPER small. I basically should have bought dry noodles from Safeway for $1 and it would have been better. Extremely disappointed.

Best noodles in SF

By DD68 |

This restaurant was recommended by our driver and we dropped by for lunch. Fortunately we came around 12 and there is a table for four. There are also seats by the counter for single eaters. There are beef tendon and brisket, wanton, char siew noodles. For desserts please try the red bean soup. The noodles is cooked just right, springy (Q-Q). Service is fast, and you can get in and out within thirty minutes.

The best won tons!

By Peter B |

I live 30 min north of SF and enjoy doing a night there for an occasion. Found myself walking past there at night. It is always filled with men in their cooks whites filling up after a long day. They have the best soup stock! Nice mix of chicken and pork and the won tons are tender and filling.

Fantastic

By Rathskeller |

The wonton soup was great! Great staff, but busy and kind of crazy during dinner rush. Very good value though, the food was fantastic!

tasty Chinese noodles

By xia315 |

Its noodles are so tasty and chewy, and at a fairly decent price at this busy neighborhood. Had to use cash rather than credit card though.

Beef brisket/Wun Tun noodle

By JuneLowe |

Went here for lunch yesterday after reading other reviews. The beef brisket and wonton noodle soup was tasty. The soup itself was okay. My kids thought it was bland. The portions are on the smaller side but you can always add extra noodles or meat for a couple of dollars. For 4 soups my total came to $32.30 including an extra noodle and meat to one bowl. Would recommend trying it out. The place is quite small so you may end up sharing a table with others. Service was fast and efficient.

Real Cantonese Food

By DorisKhoo |

This is real cantonese cuisine that serve won ton noodle that is al dente and fried hor fun with wok hei. Clean and newly renovated with friendly staff. There is already a line when we left at 11:40 am on Juneteenth day, Thursday. Best parking in Chinatown is Portsmouth Square garage. If not driving, there are plenty of waymo driverless taxi to try!

Authentic Hong Kong noodle soup with a long history

By Ivyingz |

We visited SF in May 2017 and one of our local Chinese friends recommended us to visit this noodle shop. He mentioned that this restaurant has a long history and he has been visiting here since he was 13. So we went there for dinner on our last day in SF. It did not disappoint us at all. Very authentic Hong Kong style soup noodle with yummy beef brisket. My hubby ordered a wonton noodle soup and he loved it as well. We then recommended this place to our neighbours who happen to be travelling in the States as well. They went for breakfast the following day and texted us"It is our best breakfast for the entire US trip! Thanks for the recommendation." It says it all. We will definitely come back here again when visiting SF.

Excellent soup

By Arbot09 |

This place was very busy at lunch time with locals, so you know it's good. I had an excellent soup with wontons! The staff let me used the WiFi, which was very much appreciated.

5 stars noodle

By MsVL |

It was as good as you can get in Hong Kong. Soup was tasty, noodle have the perfect texture and wanton are good good .

Excellent value and the perfect stop walking through Chinatown

By James S |

After much deliberation, we decided to settle on the cheap option for food. I was not expecting a lot from the google reviews but was pleasantly surprised when we found the place really busy with a good atmosphere. The service was good and the food came quickly and was delicious - I would recommend the Pork Wun Tun noodle soup.

Best Wun Tun ( Woonton ) noodle place in SF

By 69tiger888 |

We discovered this place 20 years plus ago , just a bit off Chinatown , a typical noodle restaurent. You actually can watch as they cook the noodle from the window. The menu is simple. , nothing more than 10 dollars , don’t expect any fancy service , place hold 25 or so , fast turnover ( 15/min meals ). Noodle with beef brisket or wonton our favorite . Good for afternoon snacks or late breakfast ( open 930 am ). We always try to patronage when we visit SF

Cheap (for SF anyway) noodle soup that's pretty good. For about $4-5, you get a mid-size bowl of noodle soup with whatever additions you choose--wonton, beef, pork, shrimp, etc.

Delicious & Authentic

By Jennifer M |

This is a little hole-in-the wall with just a few tables and a counter: nothing fancy. We saddled up to the counter and ordered the first item on the menu: the won ton soup with ramen. It was affordable and so filling! By the time my stomach could take no more, I still had a bowl full of noodles: very generous portions. Regarding other Tripadvisor reviews, ok, yes: the bathroom – and the stairs down to it – totally out of a horror film. But I didn’t go there for the bathroom, I went there for well-made, traditional won ton soup! Plus, if I’m honest, it kind of added to the experience. I’m weird that way.

Great Wan Tan Mee at Chinatown

By Mech C |

We were actually looking for dim sum and stumble upon this restaurant just beside the road....looks really tempting when you see real stream gushing out from the kitchen....means really hot food....tried the wan tan....really good and delicious. Even the dry oster mee is very tasty....I would reckon a good 2 thumbs up for this restaurant. Not expensive yet quality food. But remember cheap and good service does not always come in a combo.......so be prepare....

Cannot find a better Cantonese Won-tun Noodle shop in SF

By Coral490 |

We felt like we were in Hong Kong with their dishes. The won-tun.....beef tripes......fish cakes......fried noodles.......steamed vegetables...... all so good.

Great for lunch

By Arnold C |

Traditional won ton and noodle restaurant. They have pigs feet along with tripe. Very crowded for linch

Delicious

By Raju S |

For the best wun tuns in SFO one must visit this small non descript place. Unassuming Hon’s is usually packed with patrons and mostly regulars . Quick service , wholesome and really delicious the wun tuna are served piping hot and the dish has many variations

Best “Nou Lan” (beef brisket”) noodles

By ivorysingapore |

Been disappointed with Chinese food offerings around the US of A until we found this gem of a place in Chinatown SF which was recommended by a local that we approached in the vicinity. Best “Nou Lan” (beef brisket”) noodles and very decent pricing too. And portions are not your typical American size which is such a waste!

wun-tun is good

By kumaji3 |

Won-ton was delicious. The bland soup of dried shrimp it was friendly and refreshing taste Yes to the seasoned sesame oil flavor to meat Wonton.

Highly recommend!

By kirstenmassey |

I don't think I could begin to name all the things we tried; we were three couples plus a kiddo so we tried soo many things off the menu. They did make splitting checks super easy. Staff was quick and attentive even though we ordered so much. All food was hot and fresh, and you can tell it is fresh food, not frozen! Great place for dimsum and Chinese yumminess.

Perfect for a lunch in Chinatown

By LesMisso |

Ace, convenient address for a lunch in the heart of chinatown, fast, hearty and with a good canteen atmosphere.

Not for vegetarians

By meri06 |

We came here to try some Dumplings but unfortunately there are no fish-only or vegetarian versions. For those who don't eat meat it's not the right place, the service is very fast and hasty, the prices are medium-high. In the end we had a seafood rice but the quantity of fish was very minimal.

Takes one back in time

By rosalines2017 |

A couple of doors from our hotel, was determined to try it but closes early......on our last day we went for lunch prior to going to the airport. Small place but bustling, shared tables, had wanton and noodles with beef brisket very very nice. Wantons tasted like ones I had as a child! Takes one back in time! So glad to share the experience with my 18 year old son!

Down the drain, sadly

By Lucksa |

Hon's in San Francisco had been my student days haunt back in the 70s. Flocks of Asian students would descend on the place for their delicious curry beef brisket noodles. My wife and I have been back to this place for the last 3 years with hops of reliving the old days. Gone! Premises hygiene is absolutely questionable, service staff have no idea who ordered what, prices have skyrocketed to beyond reason, and worst of all, the food was simply plain BAD. Hon's, you need a Gordon Ramsay moment! In the meantime, stay away. Seriously!!!

One of the best wonton soups in SF

By notperfectalas2 |

Was in SF Chinatown recently and just could not resist grabbing a bowl of Hon's Wun Tun even though I was going to Yank Sing for Dim Sum an hour later. It was and is that good. $4.99 for 10 small but very tasty shrimp and pork dumpling wontons in a GREAT soup. Their noodles are great too, but this time i opted just for the won ton because i did not want to fill up. It is a true hole-in-the-wall. The restaurant faces Portsmouth Square, on the block to left (if facing Chinatown) of the Hilton Chinatown Hotel. Get there before noon for a seat in a small restaurant. You truly will not be disappointed in a true Hong Kong-like eating establishment.

Good local Chinese food

By 11_Noemi_11 |

The Wonton soup really good. It is quick, they treat you great and it's an excellent price for the value. If you're around Chinatown, stop there.

For every won-ton cravers

By sarahpangkey |

Happened to stay at the Hilton Financial district and was craving for won ton noodle soup on a rainy day. A friend recommended me to go to this place and it truly satisfied my craving! I am especially picky in my broth preference in general, Hon's soup broth tastes clean and flavorful, not overpowered with MSG (an ingredient I'm allergic to and truly loathe in every soup), and most of all, very generous with the won ton serving. Truly recommend this place for quick lunch!

Authentic and Delicious

By Jason D |

If you're tired of showing up at a noodle house, only to see a crowd of Yelpers and Bloggers standing outside, try Hon's Wun Tun House. Delicious soups and handmade Wun Tuns (won tons), with all sorts of authentic Chinese variations. Have a simple bowl of soup or be as adventurous as you like! Quick service, cheap eats!

Delicious soup!

By Elizabeth P. |

This hidden gem on the outskirts of Chinatown is a great stop for any tourist or local. The House Special Wun-tun Noodle Soup is the perfect comfort food on a gloomy San Francisco day. The service is speedy and the food is cheap compared to the surrounding area. The place is packed with local regulars. I forgot a was a couple blocks away from my office in the Financial District because the experience felt so authentic!

Authentic Chinese Curry with V Low MSG

By eatingchocolate |

I've eaten at 5 other places in Chinatown, including the two other places down the same street from this little noodle house, and this place has the least amount of MSG (flavor enhancer, monosodium glutamate) in their food. At other Chinese eateries I had been to the food is usually doused with so much MSG that I felt extremely dehydrated afterwards. At one place I actually suffered a nagging migraine for 24 hours after the meal. And the lack of MSG isn't the only recommendable thing about this place, it's the food in there. I have tried Beef Brisket with Ho Fun, Wonton Noodles, and Curry Beef Brisket with Rice. The Beef Brisket and Wonton Noodles are alright, not the greatest stuff I have eaten but they're nice enough that I would certainly go back for them because of their low MSG content. To be honest the Beef Brisket, despite that it melts in the mouth, is lacking in some important ingredients like Chin Pi. I have tasted better Beef Brisket in the London Chinatown but that's another story. The Curry Beef Brisket is really the star of the show. I walked in there one afternoon and even the chef himself was eating that. OK - curry in a Chinese place sounds weird, right? Not so if you're originally from Hong Kong like myself. The curry there is cooked just the way you'd find it in the tiny Cha Chan Ting (translate to "Tea Restaurant") that are everywhere in Hong Kong. I don't know how to describe it but it's really really good. It was one of the top five food moments during the 12 days I was in SF - the others being oysters at Swan Oyster Depot, banana and lime salsa on seared tuna at a Cuban restaurant on Van Ness between Pacific and Jackson, fresh organic apricots from the Ferry Building Farmers' Market, warm tomato salad at Buca's (chain italian). One thing though - although most pple in there are quite friendly, expect very poor service from the lady with tattooed on eyebrows. Yes I think they're fake eyebrows because they're blue. She looks like she's incapable of smiling and treated me with the worst distain when I asked for a receipt. OK it's a $6 dollar receipt but I was the customer and all the food dishes in there are under $6 anyway so I should be allowed that, right? It only opens on Monday to Saturday, 11 - 7.

Attracted by the view of the kitchen

By Titof33 |

From the street, you can see the cooks who make the different ravioli offered on the menu. That's what attracted us. Very good choices with tasty and inexpensive dishes. The scallion pancakes and gyoza are excellent. Paw choice always obvious because the card is in Chinese with approximately subtitles. Fast service.

FWii: Great Hole-In-The-Wall Chinese

By Howard W |

FWii (For What It Is): Simply good won ton and noodles in this been-around-forever Chinatown spot. No frills, plain as can be---like old Chinatown of the 1950's when Chinese residents probably ate here regularly. Somewhat comforting to know this restaurant can survive so near the Hilton Hotel and the Financial District. For super low prices, try the won ton soup, won ton/ noodles soup, pigs feet, hardboiled tea eggs (3)...

Clean! Tasty! Cheap!

By korliza |

My BF loves noodles and soup. After having delicious dim sum snacks, we walked here to share a regular bowl of noodles. Broth, dumplings, and noodles all tasty. Price cannot be beat. They serve a really nice hot tea gratis. They make the egg noodles there and I saw a couple people purchase the fresh noodles to take home with them.

Craving for Cantonese comfort food? This is the place to check out

By acli |

One of the San Francisco Chinatown staple won run place. It’s gotten more popular since I was last here. Also added more to their selections with scallion pancakes and xiao long bao. Nice staff and yuck service. Good place to stop if you are craving for Cantonese comfort food.

Great little authentic cantonese noodle-shop

By leafadvisor |

Was visiting friends in SF from London, but had a day alone exploring Chinatown (being originally from Hong Kong myself). Was planning to get a standard dim sum fare for lunch when I saw the shop front from a distance and had my appetite whetter for some old-school street food. Cheap (for SF), fast authentic wonton (dumplings) noodles, with various additional traditional dishes available. The interior decor or food presentation are far from fancy, the seating uncomfortable, location right next to a dirty busy road, but I'd highly recommend the food for tourists and expats alike.

Chinatown San Francisco a recommended eatery .

By Julian C |

Have travelled to San Francisco with family and visited Chinatown. A barman from a nearby lounge recommended this restaurant and in particular the chive and pork dumplings and fried rice. In my experience anywhere where locals eat is a good sign (there were other locations completely empty and touts on the street pushing restaurants nearby that were also empty). Staff very accommodating as seated initially under a cold air con unit but moved to another table. Staff also helpful when taking our order. Food was delicious and agree with our barman regarding the dumplings they were great. I appreciate there are hundreds of eateries to choose from and this was recommended by a local, but if it helps to minimise the choice a little this if definitely worth a try. Happy eating

OK, May be too much MSG

By chanyu1 |

Had lunch here with family. We ordered the regular won ton noodles, beef stew won ton noodles and curry fish balls. All tasted ok except there was a lingering aftertaste in the mouth that normally associates with the use of MSG. Plus pricing might be a little awry as the beef stew won ton noodles costed twice as much as the regular won ton noodles. So one should check pricing carefully before ordering. Unlike many other small won ton houses in Chinatown, this one accepts credit cards but minimum charge must be over $15. Ok for a quick meal as despite the possible MSG aftertaste, no stomach or digestive issues...
