A Must!!

By jwumfs |

This place is awesome. I found it on all of the websites and I live in Philly and knew nothing about it! Went through the screening process and was so happy once inside. It is romantic and fun! I highly recommend making this an event at least once when you are in Philly!!

I may never visit a more perfect bar

By ianjindal |

I turned up at the near-invisible door with no signage. A doorman appeared behind a grill and quizzed me: did I know where I was, how did I find out about the place, was I alone. After an eyeing up and down, presentation of id and slightly-worrying time until the doorman returned I had a stern talking to about 'rules' and my acceptance thereof, cash only and no phones. My acquiescence led to the door opening. Once inside I was made to sit down in a dark room for an emphatic presentation of the rules - no phones, no photos, no being a jerk. Neat. Very Hollywood and doormanly. I was finally ushered into a large bar that was dark dark it made the Buddha Bar look bright! Seated at the bar I was then treated to the most friendly, knowledgeable, inventive and welcoming evening I've ever spent drinking cocktails. The menu is astounding. High-quality spirits, inventive mixes, swoonworthy flavours... The bar staff were friendly and expert. The owner, Lê, was there and we had a long chat about the creation of the bar - fascinating. I spent three hours of total diversion and enjoyment. I cannot recommend this highly enough if you like your spirits, welcome somewhere a bit off-piste and feel comfortable somewhere more edgy than a hotel cocktail bar. I was lucky to get in - the first hit evening after a week of rain apparently send Philadelphians looking for outdoors bars. My tip is to get there early and don't take a group of friends. Better an intimate two who get in rather than a foursome who wait 2 hours! This has coloured my view of the perfect bar - in a good way. Congrats to the team for creating and sustaining this experience.

Interesting place

By Dallas D |

Stumbled upon this place almost by accident. I’d heard of it before, but only recognized it due to some passers by commenting on the location. Rang the bell and a gentleman came out to get our ids before taking us in to tell us of the rules. Went in and were seated immediately. We had a bramble and a Manhattan, both of which were great. Decor was eclectic and the lighting was dim to help with conversation.

Great cocktails and atmosphere

Dark ambiance complemented with candlelight, creative cocktails with homemade and fresh ingredients, fun evening out!,

Cocktails taken seriously

By Clark Grisso |

There's a lot of hassle to get in this place. We waited about 15 minutes to get through the gate and then this Leslie Chow guy gives us his shtick about no pictures, phone calls, etc. Once inside it has a very cool vibe, the bar tenders are like machines making craft booze drinks, which are excellent. Not a particularly hip crowd, mostly special night out types, including my wife and me. Beware, it is cash only and they enforce some kind of dress code that permits jeans, but not sneakers.

Speakeasy with a secret (it seems)

By Larry S |

It's next to impossible to find on the street. Locals that were around the corner weren't sure where it was. Once we did, we had to wait 10 minutes or more to be admitted. The place is shroud in secrecy. Any photos taken results in immediate and permanent banishment from this place. There is no beer or wine. It's a liquor joint. It's dimly lit, feeling of a 40's noir enigma. There definitely feels like there's more than meets the eye to this place. It's so intriguing. Even if you don't enjoy what this place is, you still won't stop talking about it. Just go. No sneakers allowed, so you know.

Exotic, intimate, great cocktails...

By Tracy S |

My husband and I can't wait to go back to Hop Sings. The hype about the secret door and the dress code seems intimidating but actually the doorman was very nice. Yes, there is a dress code and it is strict. No sneakers. No shorts. No tank tops. Hey, this is a fancy place people. I respect the no cell phone rules. It's about time there were some rules regarding the rampant use of devices in our world. So, if you go here, expect some rules and expect to have to talk to your date, not on your phone. Expect some fantastic cocktails and don't come hungry. There's no food. Oh, and bring cash, only cash, enough of few delicious $14 drinks and a nice tip for the bartender. Enjoy.

Overpriced

By RickGB |

The most expensive drinks I ever bought !! 5 of us $110 - not my scene but there was a line to get in so obviously people like it

Nice Speakeasy Serving Excellent Cocktails!

By Desiree C |

We braved the cold, spotted the line, and waited along with the others. The process can be a bit intimidating, thanks to the very serious doorman. We witnessed somebody get turned away and we even saw somebody get banned for life due to leaving a crappy tip in the past! They do not mess around here, but if you're cool and cooperative, there should be no problems. The space is fairly large with a dark and mysterious ambiance. We sat at the bar and it was great watching the mixologists at work. The cocktails were excellent and worth every penny. This was a great speakeasy and I would definitely come back.

Disrespectful, discriminatory, avoid.

By Chad J |

I’d strongly recommend avoiding this place. Unfortunately, the bouncer was blatantly discriminatory, and the overall experience—from the service to the drinks—left a lot to be desired. There are so many great spots in Philly where you’ll be welcomed and treated with respect—this just isn’t one of them.

We travel 7 hours just to visit and it is worth it!

By Rick L |

We plan trips to Philadelphia just to visit this amazing bar. We can’t oversell this…absolutely the best cocktails we have ever had. There are strict house rules for a reason and we appreciate that. Always a wonderful evening at Hop Sings. Leave your phones at home and enjoy the atmosphere and fine crafted drinks. Bring your wallet as this is cash only ( no credit cards accepted).

Speakeasy to me

By Britgirl_dallas_72 |

My review isnonly based on drinks. As we have grown older me and the hubby have albeit given up on a night of clubbing on our travels. Instead we seek out the speakeasys that populate big cities such as Philly, Chicago and NYC. On this trip to Philadelphia we heard about Hop sing laundromat and off we went at 11pm on a freezing cold night so see what it was all about. I read a few negative reviews here about the doorman/owner being dicks....I must add my thoughts here. The whole style of the speakeasy is the secretive prohibition drinks era. It is not unusual that a speakeasy will put on a little "show" of reading you the rules or looking you up and down and making you wait. This may sound odd to someone not used to it...but I promise once you are in and through the "process" everyone will be very friendly. HSL is located in Chinatown. Use your phone gps as there is no way you'd find this unless you are really observant. The iron door has no sign at all.....if you peek through this door you may catch the tiny sign inside which says 18th amendment. In our case there were a few people outside already alerting us we were in the right spot. We waited a short while until the doormen (or owner) a small Asian man directed us inside. He warned us that it was cash only and checked our id. Once inside we found ourselves in a small waiting room beautifully decorated. The same man instructed us of the rules...no phone photos etc etc ( all part of the speakeasy style) Another short wait and we were in. A great seat right at the bar with a perfect view of the mixologists at work. Drinks are not cheap ($12-15) but they are strong and expertly done. Orange zest is peeled, cocktails are shaken, the interior is perfect speakeasy decor and the whole ambiance is very cool. If you like the Speakeasy style you will love this one!!!

Best Cocktail Ever

By blanepeters |

I am not a young hipster. I am old and grey and have seen somethingst. Their Baba ORreily is the best cocktail I have ever had. Great experience.

An excelent experience!

By Lizp14 |

This place is a lot of fun, and I loved the speakeasy vibe. Know what you're getting into before you go...a dress code, cash-only, no photography...and you'll have a good time. The service and the drinks were on point!

A wonderful surprise

By Jeff S |

A co-worker and I were directed to the Hop Sing Laundromat by the bartender at the hotel where we were staying. We walked there and were somewhat intimidated by the facade. We were apparently there pretty early for the usual crowd, as there were not many people there. We were informed of the rules and went in for a seat at the bar. The cocktails were amazing, and the owner bought us a drink while we talked with him about the location and concept. No beer, no wine - nice. All ingredients were freshly wrought. We watched the bartenders juice chunks of watermelon for a drink. The only dig was the lack of personality on the part of the bartender waiting on us. We were VERY impressed with the drinks. A must visit in Philly's Chinatown!

From the tradition of a twenties speak-easy

By Hale F |

If you enjoy a tradition bar with well made drinks you will enjoy the experience. This place probably had "signature drinks" before nouveau gourmet restaurants. The dress code and rules are intended to keep the traditional understated atmosphere,so casual business dress attire is as informal as you should attempt admittance. There is any drink you can imagine plus some. This is a interesting spot for a drink before or after dinner. It's a traditional bar that our host bring out of town guests not only for the drinks but for the experience. Not for the cheap.

What a place!

By cascadesjn |

Nestled away on Race Street is a an iron gated entrance with no markers as to what lies behind. What a place! Ring the bell and you are greeted and asked for ID which is promptly returned. Move into the entrance room and you are then asked how you came to find the "laundromat" and told the rules...biggest rule - NO PICTURES ALLOWED! Really, you'll get tossed out the door. I'm liking this already. From there you're whisked into the main room. This place is so cool - loaded with books - memorabilia and artwork galore from the owner's travels. On to drinks - inventive - pricey and very, very good. These bartenders know their stuff! Cash Only. Drinks only. Some people who reviewed this place seemed to be annoyed at the entrance process but it is part of the mystic. Speakeasy vibe it has, but not in the way you might think. I actually debated posting this review because I think once the word gets out I'll have to wait too long to get in next time I visit. AND... I will visit again.

Amazing mixologists in a eclectic venue

By outofottawa |

Finding Hop Sing Laundromat is not easy. There is no sign to outside, only a security door which the owner will permit you through if you are properly attired. We were in shirt and tie so we were ok. Cell phone calls are forbidden from inside the bar as was explained to us. Fine by me! No photos allowed either. Ok. Cash only. No problem. We were sat at the bar where I estimated that there were over 1500 bottles of various spirits on the wall behind the bar. The ambiance is fantastic, great place to sit and chat while enjoying the best cocktails I have ever had. A little pricey but no more than any upscale restaurant. My drink had grenadine in it made by the bartender that day from scratch! Who does that? Sitting at the bar watching these masters a work was akin to watching an expert chef at work. With the ambiance and the incredible drinks offered, a great place to enjoy.

WOW!

By Sa E |

I had never been to a speak easy place and didn't know what it was. Once we walked inside, I could see why ppl love to go here. It's such a great ambiance with drinks that really tests all your pallets. A little pricey but completely worth it. Make sure you have cash on you bc it's cash only. I would definitely go there again if I went back to Philadelphia.

There is no food, but who cares.......

By Cabana-Boy-and-Girl |

The hard part is finding the place. It has no number on the door or anywhere around it. There is no name plate, sign, or any evidence that it even exists. Take a look at the picture on other reviews, or do the Google Earth thing to find 1029 Race Street. You will need to remember that it has a gray granite exterior encasing a wrought iron gate. There is a small brass door bell on the left side of the door which you will need to use to summon someone from inside to gain entrance. The process is a little trying as I was thinking, "Hey, do you want my money, or do I have to play a game to spend it here. What's this all about?" The Cabana Girl and I were scrutinized for our appearance, as were the other old people we were with. Next we had to provide a photo ID which was taken inside by the "bouncer?" while we were left standing on the street. After about 5 minutes he returned and asked us in and directed us to sit on a bench in a foyer while he disappeared for a few minutes only to return to quiz us about how we came to be in the place. Now all of this sounds very demeaning and insulting, but somehow it came off as friendly concern and a superb business practice. I won't even begin to describe the interior of this bar/cocktail lounge other than to say no matter what decor you like you will be comfortable here. Highly recommended, but be aware, no sneakers, no shorts, no attitudes. Cash only, and we spent $62 on 4 drinks with the tip and did not feel cheated.

I'm too old and too well traveled to be abused by a doorman

By betzy745 |

We were turned away because one of us didn't have ID. We're 55. Our friend is from a foreign country and didn't have her passport with her. But at that point we had already been shouted at by the doorman anxiety were pleased not to enter. Life is too short for this kind of carry on.

Early Evening Cocktails

By 524chasc |

After recently a friend had shared a "speakeasy" experience in Chicago, my wife and I decided to see what Philly has to offer. We went around 7:30ish for cocktails on a Sat evening before having dinner elsewhere. There was a good size line which made me think we weren't going to have time for our pre dinner drinks. Well, the line moved relatively quick because a large group in front was denied entry (I believe because of their size), and few others were denied entry because they were wearing sneakers. Thank goodness we dressed acceptably and were able to make it in. The atmosphere was darkly lit with tables set up with candlelight. The drinks were really well made and it looked like their bar is very well stocked. I had one of their Tequila cocktails and a gin cocktail for my wife. We had a great time hanging out in a swanky atmosphere and would reccomed people to check it out. Note that this is a cash only bar.

Yummy drinks, swanky atmosphere

By Jesse D |

Expensive drinks but pretty cool experience. Old fashioned speak easy type bar. They'll recommend something for you if you don't know what you want but can describe things you like. They know alcohol. Dimly lit, crafty cocktails, no pictures allowed. Fun experience.

A "secret" gem in Chinatown

By Ed K |

Went here for cocktails with a couple who had been here before. All I can say is WOW!!! Starting with the unassuming front door, to checking your ID to the expectation discussion prior to entry (NO PHOTOS)!!!! The drinks were phenomenal. Andre was our server and very knowledgable and helpful. The ambience was right out of a 1930's movie. Music in the background but not overbearing helped make the experience just right. I cannot remember all the drinks names, but they were all excellently balanced and enjoyable!!!! Roughly $15 per drink, but you get what you pay for.... Remember to bring cash only, no plastic accepted...We will be back, really enjoyed the whole evening!!!!

The most unique drinking experience in Philadelphia

By naturalogg |

It's hard to even explain what Hop Sing is. It's basically a speakeasy, but it's so much more. It's elegant but relaxed, and every drink I've had there has been expertly designed and mixed. The owner is fascinating and bizarre, and the decor is somehow calming yet fascinating at the same time. Most importantly though, if you're planning a trip there, be aware of the dress code. Dress fancy, like you're going to a steak dinner (which is basically what these cocktails are in the mixology world). No flip flops, no shorts, no hats. Dress to match the scenery. It gets very crowded now that everyone knows about it, and it's not even that easy to find (there's no explicit sign). So allow some time, plan for a few drinks (they do not serve food), and enjoy. Oh, and don't order anything that isn't on their extensive menu (they won't make it for you and there's no need to deviate from their concoctions).

what a plonker owns this place

By BCraigD |

I've met some plonkers, but the oriental guy that owns this place takes the biscuit. Talk about small man syndrome, As for the gorilla on the door, words fail me. You'd think they were doing you a favour Inside it's like a collection of the great unwashed of Philly. Avoid it like the plague, or you might catch it Yuck

Yes, average

By ManayunkMichelle |

The hype is not lived up to. First of all, they are way more chill and friendly than you might "hear" from the rumors. The cocktails are good and expensive. The owner seemed sweet (yes, truly). And, it was LOUD (not quiet). Cells phone are allowed as long as you are texting (not talking or taking pics/videos). They do make you wait and I think there's some allure they are trying to build up because there were plenty of open spots. Worth a look-see but not somewhere I will HAVE to return to.

Annoying!

By Roux42 |

The rules were silly. We were a group of three couples in our 50s and a little to old for shenanigans and found the ''rule reading' tedious and annoying. Patrons are not allowed to speak with their freinds? We were brought to sit at a table for 6 that was to small for our six middle age butts. Only half our group had drinks when we sat down and our waiter never came. We finally waived him down and he said that he never saw us sit down. The bar was almost empty! He still managed to screw up two out of the 4 drinks ordered. Two positive comments - the drinks that were made correctly were excellent and the music was good and not too loud. However, that is not is not enought to go back. Another issue - they do not serve wine or beer.

Cool Experience, Great Drinks

By Cottagelady579 |

From the moment we stepped in front of the unmarked gate, we wondered if we'd get in. The bouncer told the group in front of us they'd probably not get in because one guy had his phone out. Luckily we were let in and welcomed into the dark, classy bar and treated to superior drinks. The service was excellent and we truly felt we experienced something unique in Philly.

a cocktail experience

By Peggy R |

been there a few times and loved every cocktail i've ever had. Their happy hour is not to be missed. GREAT specials on expensive pours of scotch and tequila. Wait staff is attentive and professional. It's very romantic for couples but also great atmosphere for a group. The fake attitude they give when you ring the buzzer on the door outside is all part of the experience. Don't be intimidated! They do have an odd dress code, which is no sneakers or flip-flops and collared shirts for dudes. Check out reviews online for the dress code specs, jic.

Magical!!

By Cat G. |

I never been to a speakeasy but I must say this place was amazing!!! From the secret door entrance to the delicious drinks! 2 Rules! They will tell you when you get there! Enjoy!

Fantastic cocktails

By mrscress |

Stopped by early for cocktails. We were already well aware to bring cash, observe the dress code, and to not use our phones. Our IDs were briefly checked and we went in to hear the policies. Once inside, it was dimly lit and quiet with good music playing. The drink options were creative and were so good. Le came and checked in a couple of time and was personable. Had a wonderful time here and will be back.

Great cocktails and atmosphere

By Noel |

It's always a treat to come here. It's an upper-tier cocktail lounge. It has the right ambiance to relax, talk or think while enjoying a cocktail. No rowdies or loud music. The drinks are ingenious and use top-shelf liquors.

Fun place, great cocktails, great schtick

By Tiredboy69 |

I guess some people just don't get the schtick. In common usage, the word shtick has also come to mean any talent, style, habit, or other eccentricity for which a person is particularly well-known, even if not intended for comedic purposes. It's serious cocktails with a schtick. Just get off your high horse and see if you have any humor at all. No food that I recall. Great chinese food right up the street.

Don't support rude bigots!

By Joe |

Le is the rudest person I have met in years. My original post described his behavior but Tripadvisor wouldn't allow such a stark description of how rude, condescending & vindictive Le is so you will have to search the internet to see for yourself, or read the Eater or Inquirer articles about him. Le proudly said: “Apparently freedom of speech is only reserved for inferior imperialist Americans.” Obviously lots of people like his drinks but Philadelphia is a great food city so there are lots of excellent options out there, probably more reasonably priced than this place. Make the world a better place & give your money to a nice person!

SUPERB Drinks Cash Only

By Fred R |

My buddy and I had drinks here to start our evening and it's very old fashioned in many ways. No shorts and tee shirts for starters. Cash only as well. Drinks were reasonably priced and high-quality at about $10 each. The cool, old fashioned saloon ambiance and the superb service and drinks is what sets this place apart from many others. We didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food. Personally, I think this is a great place to bring a date and not really a hang out for friends to get rowdy.

Good cocktails

By j0yce90 |

Came here on a weeknight when Hop Sing was almost empty and we were greeted quickly and brought to our table. My first drink was the Stonewall Riot which consisted of Vodka, freshly extracted green grape juice and orange juice. This was recommended to me by one of the bartenders after I said I wanted something fruity. I could taste the freshness of the green grape but surprisingly could not taste the orange juice at all. The drink progressively got more enjoyable as I sipped through it. My second drink was The Failed Entertainment which was gin, grapefruit, mint and cucumber (? not too sure) which I really enjoyed too because it was sweet. My boyfriend ordered The Honeymoon and Judah Railroad which I didn't like because of the strong alcoholic taste. Judah Railroad especially was a full drink of hard liquor (10year- Scotch, two kinds of chartreuse and something else)! Drinks were $12 (including tip and tax it averaged out to be $15 per drink) and its cash only.

Hop Sing is a gem!

By Brandon E |

Hop Sing is truly one of the best establishments in the city. The first thing you notice is the fantastic atmosphere. The main seating area is dark, and candle lit, creating an intimate setting. The cocktails are delicious and adventurous. What really sets this place apart from other establishments are the rules. You must abide by a dress code. It is cash only. Most importantly, you are not allowed to use your phone inside of shop Sing. This is my favorite rule of all. This helps promote an environment where people have conversations. Nobody is talking loudly in their phone while people try to enjoy their night. In a world where everyone is addicted to their phone, this rule is my favorite of them all. Hop Sing truly is a gem. I’ve seen so many things I would like to try, but even more than that, I can’t wait to go back to enjoy the atmosphere and the fantastic service.

Excellent, unique local for great drinks

By TheDocAtUB |

First off bring your ID and DON'T wear sneakers or dress like a slob. Once you have these down, you'll be ready to experience this quirky speakeasy hidden behind a steel grated door in Chinatown. After ringing the bell, you'll be greeted by a staff member who says "What are you guys looking for?". All part of the quirky ambiance of this incredible establishment. Just play nice, don't be rude, and be ready for an excellent time. Once you pass a visual inspection, he'll take EVERYONE'S IDs and head back behind the steel door. A few minutes later, you are asked a few questions, lead into a holding area, read a few 'rules'(don't worry, all are more than reasonable), then off to your table for some of the best cocktails in Center City Philly. On par with Franklin Mortgage or Farmer's Cabinet.

Worth a Visit

By mark g |

Quirky entrance with Lee briefing you on the rules. However, once you get in the drink and atmosphere are top notch!

Anti-LGBT bar in the most progressive city I know. Shocking.

By Julia D |

At Hop Sing tonight I observed the gentleman at the door let a couple inside that was wearing open toe sneakers and jeans but refuse service to my fiancé because his "pants were too tight". Absolutely ridiculous. We were well dressed, wore closed toe dress shoes, and were looking forward to having a few drinks at this elusive bar. The gentleman at the gate kept referring to my fiancé's pants as "tights" and insisted that men were not allowed to come in wearing tights (for clarification he was not; they were dress pants). I was, however, amazed to observe such a clearly regressive and anti-LGBT sentiment being echoed in the most progressive city I know. We went down the road to Charlie was a Sinner instead and had a wonderful time. We will not be back to Hop Sing

Not worth the hype

By frecklgirl |

We were there on a Sunday at 6 pm when it was empty which is obviously not the right time to go there, but the whole thing seemed rather silly. And one of my drinks reminded me of a snow cone, and another of a Starbucks drink. And somehow I feel like having it be very crowded with a wait would make it worse not better. It could have used some kind of performer jazz singer etc and maybe even a dance floor if they really wanted to recreate a 1920s feel.

Great atmosphere and perfect cocktail

By gavisphere |

Hop sing is 100% as advertised. Grab your ID, Get cash, look for the line, wait, listen to the rules, then enjoy perfectly made cocktails in an intimate, but noisy, space free of any distractions. Zero complaints and can't wait to go again.

drinks only--- almost surreal

By ordinarymind |

The experience here is bizarre but fun in an odd sort of way. One must wait in line, have one's clothing reviewed (note: this isn't a joke--- one of our group was wearing what appeared to be sneakers, and we were almost denied admission), produce ID, then, if one is lucky, be admitted to a small waiting room where the rules of the house are reviewed (summarized: restrict use of cellphones and don't be a rude fool). Once inside, it's as if the scene has reverted to "bars of the 1930s"-- dark, formal, tables well apart. The drinks menu is quite ornate--- mixology rules here. And, as noted, at roughly $14 a drink. But well worth the time and effort. I'm a scotch guy (not often the source of mixed drinks) and had an Operation Overlord (single malt scotch, honey liqueur and two fruit juices--- interesting but ultimately a waste of good scotch); others in our group enjoyed their drinks greatly. Lots of fun--- you should go at least once.

The second time was a good time.

By WMT67 |

We were in Philadelphia for dinner a few weeks ago and decided to stop on our way back home to South Jersey. Unfortunately, my wife did not have her ID so we were not permitted to cross the metal gate and enter the mysterious establishment. Last Friday, we came prepared with ID. We rang the bell and waited. A gentleman came through the door and asked for our ID. We handed the ID through the gate and he left us standing on the sidewalk. A few minutes later he returned, opened the gate, handed us our ID and led us to a waiting area where we sat on wooden benches and were advised of the rules (no pictures, no cellphones, etc.). He then led us to our table in the dimly lit room. The wait staff was excellent. We opted for the basic martini and they were incredibly smooth and tasty. Having succeeded on our mission, we paid our bill, tipped generously and made our way back to South Jersey. Second time was a charm.

Rude doorman, trashy crowd

By Alexa R |

Treated terribly by the doorman for no reason. Would not subject anyone to this type of treatment. Be prepared to wait in the freezing cold, to be greeted by a grunting man who does not speak at all.

Absolutely worst

By Vincent Symann |

Absolutely worst! The door keeper is one of the rudest and most ignorant people I have ever met in my life. As our local friend introduce us an mentions that we are Swedish tourists, he interrupts in a very rude way and tells me I can't come in with shorts. Fine, it's their dresscode. We go back to our hotel to change to pants several blocks away, and when we come back he starts telling us off again, still extremely rude. Saying that we need to show him our passports when we have perfectly legit ID's and drivers licenses. Worst experience I've had in a 2 weeks stay in Philly!

Local Favourite for Cocktails

By Ryan A |

This speakeasy cocktail bar is hidden in Chinatown. A simple door that is unassuming leads you into a hidden cocktail oasis. The rules here are strict... no photos, no talking on cell phones (texting okay), and they explain this all to you before you go in. If you play by the rules its all good and you get to have one of the best cocktail drink experiences out there (try everything... its all good). Break the rules and you get banned, its that simple. i would call this a must visit while in Philly!

Go to place after Phila Flower Show

By Joseph T |

You can’t wash your clothes, but you can wash your palette! My and family’s go to place in Phila for a great drink and great time. Quirky entrance ritual, through a nondescript metal door on Race street in downtown Chinatown (helps weed out the riff raff). Need abide by dress code, submit ID for check against list of “banned actors”, quick review of rules in lobby, then off to your table. Wait staff professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. Drink recipes are to die for, unique and fresh ingredients. My daughter-in-law, who is pregnant, was accommodated with a mocktail as tasty and impressive as the best of the cocktail menu. Swanky 1920’s style speakeasy decor perfectly adds to the experience. No food, and cash only. Well worth the trip if in Phila!

Loved It!

By Lynda R |

This is a hidden gem in Chinatown. If you want a bit of nostalgia of the speakeasy days then this is the place for you. There is no sign, just a door with a bell. The inside is elegant with high ceilings and dark paneled walls. No food is served but they have an awesome drink menu.

On point drinks and service

By Brian D |

I read the reviews and had no issues getting in. Once they scan your ID, they sit you down and explain the rules. You can text, just no pics. Doormen were pleasant to deal with, bartenders were excellent. It’s a really neat place, but it does get loud. Try it out, the drinks are no more pricey than the hotel price I would have paid and much better quality. Overall, I’d go back when I’m in philly again.

Great experience. No phones. Great idea.

By Matt N |

Great experience. Bring a physical copy of your ID. My jurisdiction has a digital option. No good here. Not a big deal. We went back to the hotel to get it. The no phone rules is a welcome experience. No people taking pictures, phones ringing. More places should be like this. There is a special area where you can take or make a call if necessary. Drinks and staff were both amazing.

One of the coolest bars I've ever been to

By data638 |

If you can find the unmarked entrance of this place in Chinatown and pass Mr. Lee's (The owner) muster he will let you into what is one of the coolest bars I've ever been to. The interior space use is amazing, it's not too crowded or cluttered and feels almost more like a private dining experience then a bar. Because of their strict no cell phones no photo rules, civility reigns and lets you enjoy what are some of the best cocktails not only in Philadelphia but I daresay the eastern seaboard in relaxation.

For those serious about cocktails

By etradervic |

Four of us went to Hop Sing's for the first time. After ringing the doorbell on an unremarkable and unmarked door, we were asked to present ID. Upon entry, we were explained the rules to which we all agreed. We sat at a comfortable table and began to peruse their substantial drink menu. I was at first concerned about the size of the menu; thinking that large menus usually translate into substandard fare. However, when the drinks were served, we were all very happy with our selection. I would add that the decor was fashioned by someone with an eye for detail. This is one of the best bars in Philadelphia.

I took 7 friends here tonight on a business trip. While waiting on the sidewalk to get let in the gate, one of our party was in the process of taking a photo of the group waiting. The doorman in a red bow tie came out, asked if she was taking a photo, and slammed the door on us. They lost about $400+ as we are all on a business trip and wanted food and drinks.

Favorite Bar

I am a huge fan of this bar. I think it's something you should experience at least once for yourself. I on the other hand have visited multiple times and will continue going. The drinks are outstanding, the experience is unique and one of a kind. The hype is real. Go check it out for yourself. Like others have mentioned, dress for the occasion and go enjoy some of the best drinks you'll ever have. CASH only!

I think we are all bored of being badly treated by a pretentious doorman for a mediocre cocktail and a lackluster crowd.

Classic Speakeasy

By BixUS |

Yeah, there are louder wilder spots in town, but the intention seems to be a quiet relaxed place, not to be seen but rather to spend time with someone special or have a long chat. Drinks aren't flashy but well thought out and made with ingredients that require preparation and thought. Best part was the lack of a sign - just a recessed door with a red light bulb. You WILL need proof of COVID vaccination and WILL have your ID scanned. If you don't want that, move along. Also, there are no photos because they prohibit them. The interior is dark and nicely decorated but it isn't a club....

Cannot recommend. Period.

By Wander |

I've been here a couple times and have had not so great experiences both times. Still thrown off why the owner has to take everyone's IDs away from them behind a door. Pretty concerning that he can't just confirm you're of age right in front of you by looking at the date just like any other bar. The first time, I personally didn't have anything happen to myself, but a couple people in my party were not drinking alcohol for various reasons so they ordered mocktails. We get the bill and they were charged for the same amount as the people that ordered the alcoholic versions of the drinks. We called someone over to ask about this because paying $20 for juice in a cup was absurd when there's no alcohol in it. Their justification was that they squeeze the juice themselves. Ok so do other places that doesn't justify paying like there's alcohol in them. The next time I had visited with a group of friends (wasn't my choice to go back there), I was pressured from the waiter to order a cocktail but I opted for just a Coke because I wasn't about to give them $20+ more of my hard earned money when I had my previous experience and did not like the place. I said I wanted a Coke and they kept asking if i wanted something else several times and I had to be firm that all I wanted was a Coke. I did have a friend in the party that broke a rule and they escorted her out, which, fine, she broke the rule she leaves. That makes sense. They let the rest of us stay and enjoy the drinks we ordered. Fast forward, someone in the group decided to go back a different time after we went, turns out ALL of us are banned even though the rest of us didn't do anything wrong. Since the first visit here, it's really just the exclusivity and mystique that brings people back here with the no phones rule and the littlest thing can get you banned (or nothing at all) and it really isn't even a great experience. I wouldn't recommend anyone coming here. Not worth it.

A nice time

By mugzy |

I can see those who did not do any research being a bit off put but the opening interaction, but if you were familiar headed in, it was a great spot. Normally, the price tag is more than I'd like to spend - $14-17 per cocktail, but this was a special evening, which called for some special drinks, and they delivered. Entry was as expected. A bit gruff, but not rude. Process was quick and the seating area was very nice (dark - man I couldn't see my feet for a few minutes until my eyes adjusted). The bartenders were top notch, professional and were hustling. Highly recommended.

whatever...just give me a drink

Depending on what you are interested in you might find this a magical place or close to your last experience with TSA. If you have read the other reviews you will know there is a gate and a man who solemnly comes to the gate, talks to you through the gate, takes your ID, leaves and then returns 5 minutes later, and in a soft spoken voice allows you to come through the gate (ps do not touch the gate...that is a huge problem). You enter the foyer and sit down and wait for him to return to explain that you cannot use your phone to make phone calls or to take photos but you may use it to text...or as we found handy to read the drink menu. After he whispers the rules to you each of you must acknowledge that you understand the rules (similar to sitting in the exit row of an airplane). I spend 10 hours at my job on the phone, in meetings, answering emails, etc. At the end of the day I just want to say hi to my friends over a drink. This is not the place for me or for anyone who wants to just enjoy the company of your friends...or maybe because I am 42 this is just a little too hokey of an experience to me. If however, you are interested in an experience and a very interesting place (the bar is quite nice with a beautiful metal library ladder that runs the length of it on a rail) this is the place for you. The drinks are amazing...and this is coming from someone who generally just drinks wine. Also as I mentioned your phones can be used to text and as a flashlight as it is too dark to read the menus by candlelight. It is hard to rate this place since it is really quite good, but I cannot honestly recommend it nor will I ever go there again. I just do not need the hassle when there are many fabulous bars in the city where they do not take your ID (I still do not know what he was doing with my ID...I am 42 with grey hair) and seat you right away with happy hour drinks and food. I love an experience as much as the next so maybe this is for tourists? but this is not the place to unwind after a day at work. This is the place you tell people about and relay its quirkiness. I am sure there are some folks who will enjoy the drama of getting in, but in the end they are $14 AMAZING (yes amazing drinks!) served in a very interesting dark room.

Memorable experience and great cocktails!

By Jennifer F |

We were in town for a conference and were looking for good cocktails. Took a chance on this establishment despite the negative reviews. This is a speakeasy bar. There are rules. No photos. Cash only. If you can accept that and immerse yourself in the experience, it’s absolutely fantastic! It was truly memorable, and the cocktails were top notch. We will happily return during our next trip to Philly!

World Class Cocktails

By goislands |

It's clear from the moment your drink is served why HSL is a world renown for it's cocktails - they are singular! Amazing experience (even the entry process was great!) Incredible selection of spirits from all over the world. Great collection which adds to the unique and eclectic decor. The mixologists are true craftsmen. They know how to blend the right ratio of spirit, citrus, herbs, botanicals, and many other things which make for a truly one-of-a-kind drinking venue. Be sure to mind the dress code - otherwise you won't be allowed in. If you love craft cocktails - put this on your list. It's a must do sipping venue.

Fun Speakeasy

By JessMacB |

My husband (who does not drink) found this place for a large group of us to go after a recent wedding. What a fun time! Go dressed to impress or you will not get in. Security is tight and they check your IDs before they let you through the door. I think this is to make sure you have not been there before and been kicked out for any number of reasons. There are a LOT of rules which they go through with you prior to seating you. The atmosphere is fun and comfortable and our group had a great time. There is a two drink minimum per person so be prepared to get sloshed and spend a lot of cash as the drinks are not cheap. They are however, absolutely delicious. A must go at least once!

SMOOOOTH

Hard to find, but definitely worth it. Handmade cocktails that slide smoothly down. Classic setting, some ceremony but not overdone. Would definitely put this on your list for before or after dinner cocktails

really fun

A super fun place. The drinks are great too! A different kind of bar. They serve only drinks, wish they had a couple of food options.

Photo safari dream! - Banned!

By NoblesseOrBleach |

#1 place to take photos in the city. Ring the doorbell 5x to get in. ADA accessible. Errrr -- absolutely none of these. Big ugly door out front, stairs going up. And nooo photos! Bouncer Bob answers the door, looking down expectantly. We announce our party size and he immediately asks if one of our party was taking a photo. Well, yes, but of the outside, as is the right of any patriotic citizen. B. Bob immediately turns around and shuts the door. 'He's checking if they have space!' says a friend. 'Ring the doorbell again!' chimes another. 4 rings later we realized the truth: 'We got banned!'

Follow the rules

By MeraKi25 |

We waited in line for about 10-15 minutes. In front of us were two guys on a night out. The man at the door checked our IDs and told us to wait on the bench when we walked in. The two guys kept walking into the bar. The door man then told them they had to leave because they didn't follow his rules. (That's a little nerve racking, since I didn't even hear him say to sit on the bench either. Good thing my husband did.) I laughed when someone else called him "Leslie Chow" because if you've ever seen the hangover, this man completely embodies Chow- a very angry looking guy. He then went over rules about no picture taking and no phone calls in the main area. You couldn't anyway because it's a bar and it's loud. However, I think it's kind of cool you are required to put your phone away once inside. There's no reason to be on it when you're out with someone you hopefully want to have a conversation with. Anyway, the door man remembered everyone's names and when checking space, etc, he came and filled waters, asked us how our drinks were Mr. & Mrs. with our last names, etc. The waiters are quick to bring back drink menus when you're on the last 2 sips of your drink. Drink choices were plentiful, approx. $14 each and decent. The interior was really cool and had a kind of library feel, except that it was very dark and lit by table candles and a few wall sconces. (Going to the bathroom was crazy bc you weren't used to that amount of light. It was tough readjusting when back out in the bar.) Would we go back? I would, but probably with my girlfriends... for the atmosphere and the drink menu. My husband didn't care for it much.

You'll have more fun at customs at JFK

By Phillycook |

We were meeting friends here for cocktails before dinner. Showed up at the door, rang the bell and this guy shows up at the gate. Told him we were meeting friends. Wanted to see licenses, which I was not happy about. If I was obviously under 30, sure, but neither my wife nor myself are, so I don't see the point. Wouldn't just look at my license through the plastic window of my wallet, but needed to "examine it"? We were then directed to come into the lobby and sit down and he would see where our friends were, which was patently silly because there were two people at the bar, and when I glanced through the door (obviously a no-no) I could see them seated at a table. He then came back and said "Sit down and I'll tell you the rules." I said "No, I prefer to stand as I've been sitting all day." This seemingly confused him and he went away. My wife and I conferred and when he came back we told him to please tell our friends we were leaving, as we had no desire to be be in a place that is so pretentious. I also told him that he obviously had learnt the hospitality industry at the Basil Fawlty School of Hotel Management and had be worked for me when I was a restaurant manager, I would have fired him. We left and our friends joined us on the pavement. We then went across to Dim Sum Garden and had a really lovely dinner. However, during the course of the meal, our friend got a message from Hop Sing Laundromat, asking about why they left. Totally bizarre experience. Don't waste your time unless you like abuse.

Drinks fab. Owner schizophrenic.

By lfazzina |

The drinks are absolutely fabulous at this place. Hands-down probably the best speakeasy drinks in the country. The atmosphere is absolutely beautiful. However the waitstaff is absolutely terrified of the owner, Lee, that theyre almost shaking when they serve you the drinks. And m, Lee, the owner, is very very bizarre almost paranoid and schizophrenic like. We honestly weren't sure what to make of him. He'd come inside the front vestibule I need stand there with his arms pose and his head would quirk and caulk around looking at every table like each table had a bomb on at about to go off. He'd run over the tables and he'd start organizing things and pulling chairs out and in Lake he was an angry to soldier on a mission. It was just very very bazaar. My friend, Who was from the West Coast, it was so mesmerized about what was going on she said something to the bouncer indicating that the place was run by a crazy guy. Bouncer simply nodded his head yes and winked. Something is really off in this place. And if you Google this joint plus Philadelphia magazine an article comes up that you absolutely need to read that is fascinating about the owner and why he is the way he is.

A nice hidden place for a bespoke cocktail

By Steve A |

Luckily I was with someone who knew the entrance, so there is a cool factor to being greeted at the metal gate. It is a bit unsettling to hand over your license to a guy that disappears for 5 mins. Once inside the space is wide open and very dark, wasn't too crowded for my visit. The selection of cocktails is impressive, bring your readers because it is really hard to see the menu in the dark. An okay example of the trend towards creative cocktails hidden behind closed doors.

Outstanding Cocktails, Super Cool Bar

By dknight818 |

So I'm SUPER picky about cocktails and I love trying places that take cocktails seriously. I found out about Hop Sing Laundromat while doing some research prior to a recent trip to Philadelphia and, after reading some reviews, I was excited to try it. I pinpointed the location of the door using Google street view and decided to see if I could get in on a Thursday evening right after the place opened. I buzzed the door and, after a short while, I was questioned by the door guy who took my ID inside to scan. I waited for a bit and was then led in and told to sit on a bench while the rules were explained to me. After agreeing to the rules, I was led inside and given a seat at the bar. I was immediately impressed by how COOL the actual bar is. The lights are low, the fixtures are classy, the vibe is super cool and the bartenders really do know their stuff. It wasn't busy at all which gave me ample opportunity to chat with the staff and slowly enjoy a few well-made drinks. I personally would like to see a better rye whiskey selection than what they offer but overall, I was VERY happy with my visit to Hop Sing Laundromat. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a truly authentic speakeasy experience and who appreciates top-notch cocktails. I can't wait to go back.

Missed the mark on customer service

By AJD215 |

We were excited to go here with our friends but the pretentious attitudes and 'new rules' turned us off. First, there are 3-4 couples waiting outside because they don't have "table tops for 2". One couple left to go get cash since it's cash only. Two of us waited for 15-20 min, and finally we get in and it's practically empty! Tables for 4 are open. So, you're making people wait outside even though you could conceivably sit them at a table for 4? Isn't the business about getting people in and out? Why not split the tables for 4 into 2's? Our friends showed up later and were waiting outside. The waiters were very nice and happy to accommodate us together, after speaking to the manager. However, we don't think he liked us from the beginning and gave us hard time when were outside waiting "You're leaning on the doorbell" No, we have a question. Anyway, he said they would move us to a 6 seat table but it's a 2 drink minimum per person. Seriously? At $15 a pop, we have to spend $30 a person or we all sit separately? Plus, we weren't planning to drink more than 1 cocktail since we were driving back. You can make a rule for "no photos" but you can't suddenly declare a drink minimum. With this kind of attitude and "new rules", we just walked out. We went down to Craft & Bru and got drinks for 6 people with total tab under $40. The decor is beautiful, the cocktails seem lovely, but this pretentiousness at the door should not be part of the "experience".

Excellent drinks

By Heather S |

I love the rules and how they conduct their business. The drinks were all excellent. The space is impressive. Very fun place-definitely recommend.

Impressive and Intriguing

By MikeDrinksBeer |

I heard stories of this spot and had to check it out for myself. I stopped by late one night alone. I was made to wait at the outside door before being allowed entry, then needed to wait in the vestibule to be giving instructions. I was escorted into the bar area to a single stool positioned at the bar. It was quite a sight to see, just a single stool for me at an open bar. The drinks were expertly constructed, the juices were pressed fresh and the atmosphere was classic and cool. This is an amazing spot and worth seeking out.

Hop Sing Rules

By TommyBoy94 |

Yes. Hop Sing rules and there are rules at Hop Sing. This unmarked speakeasy type bar is a trip. It is sufficiently rule-bound to make you feel like you are at the Barnes Museum, minus the art but plus some of the great booze concoctions you will have anywhere. To the rules: You are greeted at the front entrance (Provided you can find the front entrance) by a "host" who eyeballs you like the docent at the Barnes. He is relatively friendly but firm. No sloppy clothes, no sneakers. We knew the rules in advance so we were acceptably business casual. I wouldn't want to try getting in there in jeans (Though I hear really nice jeans may get you through the door). He leaves you outside while he checks your ID inside, even if you are on the old side. If admitted, you are asked to sit on a bench just off the bar while you are told the additional rules. No cell phone use at the bar (Texting is OK), no credit cards, just booze no food, no photography (We respect privacy of our clientele), quiet respectful behavior. In my youth I would have balked at rules, but now I find it is fun to dress up like a grown-up and live out fantasies like this...especially since most restaurants these days have gone the scruffy route. In honor of the no-photography edict, I won't describe the bar. I'll leave that for you to discover, but I'll just say this is really one of the most unusual and good looking bars I've been to. The mixology is terrific. I'd recommend the Sidecar but every drink is well thought out. Drinks are costly (About $12-14 a pop) but you don't need to drink many because the drinks are alcohol on alcohol and so pack a wallop. If you are driving, I'd recommend a designated driver for the return home or at least heading for dinner at any of the nearby Chinatown restaurants after your cocktails. Service is fine. The scene is warm, low-keyed and intimate. Good company is a must. Liaisons are an option.

First time to Speakeasy

By Herrin79 |

We went for a couple anniversary cocktails. Ordered Great White Hope which was excellent and a Whiskey Smash which was good a bit too citrusy for our taste. Did some research after coming across this place on TripAdvisor forum. Definitely a dress code of no jeans or tennis shoes. Cash only and no cellphone use or pictures! Only drinks no food. Great ambience, low lighting, tables mostly for couples and for groups of 4. Service was a bit slow but drinks were well made with top liquors. Will be seeking out more speakeasy establishments! Great anniversary date!

Great place...but you must know the rules

By Daniel O |

I've been here 3 times, and I really do love it. It's an unmarked ("speakeasy" style) bar with a great menu of mixed drinks. No food. But there are rules! On each of my 3 visits, after ringing the doorbell, we were greeted outside through the metal security gate for a little "screening process." For example, they'd question what you were looking for...have you been here before, etc...examining your clothes to make sure you're dressed properly (apparently "nice" jeans are fine, but no t-shirts, no sneakers, no hats, etc.). Once you pass the screening process, you are told to go into the lobby and take a seat on the bench for orientation (i.e. more rules): no speaking on cell phones in the bar and no taking photographs (after all, as the owner told us, you don't want to unknowingly end up on someone's Facebook page). On the most recent visit, I was not wearing acceptable footwear, and the owner told me to go to a local shop in Chinatown and "buy Kung Fu slippers, then come back." I did so, and on my return, he told me that because I had gone above and beyond, he was happy to buy me a drink. I really appreciated it...especially since the average drink is around $12-$13. Oh one other rule...no credit cards! Cash only. It's a quiet, candle-lit gem with the best drink menu I've seen in Philly.

Must experience!

By elsh |

Arrived after midnight on a Wednesday evening and found the unmarked entrance just as some customers were leaving. The owner looked us over and said "What do you want?" We passed muster with our reason for coming and our wardrobe, and were allowed into a small lobby and told to have a seat. Here the rules were explained to us including no cell phones, no photos and cash only. Only then were we invited in and given a table. Beautiful interior with well spaced tables. There were five of us and we each ordered a different and unique concoction, all $12. Despite the late hour on a slow night we were never rushed and last call was at 1:30. Very unique experience that was a highlight of our Philadelphia trip.

Good drinks, but nothing out of the ordinary...

By Venis3 |

Let me preface my review... my wife and I travel all over the world and make sure we hit speakeasy (yes, I know Hop Sing Laundromat doesnt want to be considered a speakeasy) and we both were in the bar business for a while. Here is my review... Atmosphere: Yes, very cool. A nondescript gate and the owner/manager are your first introductions to this bar/speakeasy. Inside you are provided an overview of the establishment and the rules -- nothing crazy, one would hope everyone can follow and abide by, very respectable. Inside is dimly lite, with exposed ceilings, red walls with pictures on the walls and music playing around the room. If you are concerned about masks and social distancing, Hop Sing is doing it right. Staff: Very attentive and not pushy. We never felt rushed and were able to sip our drinks and just enjoy our conversation. We did ask a question about some of the ingredients but our servers were unable to answer -- not a big deal, but if youre only serving alcohol you should know your fair share of what youre serving and then some. Drinks: Quality mixing by far. We were very impressed with the types of liquor being fused together and the outcome. (A fernet, absinthe mixture was amazing!) Con: Mixed drinks on the menu went from about $16 and up... not including a 20% service charge, which was not including the tip and everything was cash only -- so a tab for two drinks, with a respectable 20% tip, will run you about $50, again only two drinks at the lower end of the scale. Overall: While the drinks were good, the place itself did not warrant that price tag. Too many places (including other bars/speakeasies) where you can find as good or better drinks with a similar or better atmosphere for less. Nothing wrong with the Hop Sing, but really not worth the hype in my opinion.

Fun Place to go

By Darby A |

Very fun spot. Great if you want to go to a real "secret bar". Drinks are all very high quality and the wait staff is very professional. Fun place to go with friends to catch up or on a romantic date. I definitely wouldn't say its a party spot. The music is good and its a good mix of swing and jazz. The doorman was a little rude but I think that is maybe part "secret low key" aspect of the experience. Fun place to go once in awhile. Just remember don't take out your phone and bring cash! Cash only- about $15 per drink. Good for a once in awhile treat.

Fantastic time!

By Gregberger |

My wife and I were in Philladelphia to celabrate our 30th anniversary. I had done some research and found Hop Sing's on the web. We went on a weeknight , rang the bell and went through the usual screening process (see other reviews). Once inside we could not believe the atmosphere and mood. It was relaxing , hip and nostalgic , all at the same time. The owner Mr. Lee came over and talked to us and bought us drinks in honor of our anniversary. If you are looking for a truley unique experience , this place is for you. Not cheap , but it is worth every penny. We will be back in JUly!

Speakeasy Throwback

By Robert G |

This place came to by recommendation of our waiter at the Butcher and the Singer. He was right on point. This is a prohibition era speakeasy experience. First off know that there is a dress code. Also if you are allowed in they will scan your identification and explain that there is no phone use while in the establishment. Upon entering you are taken back in time. The drinks in this place are some of the best I have ever had. I went with a Manhattan and my wife had a tequila cocktail. Over great service and overall a wonderful experience

Drink "easy"

By Susan B |

What a great little bar in Chinatown. My son and his girlfriend took us for drinks after graduation and we had a blast. We were greeted at the door and asked to provide our photo ID, then led up to a foyer and told to sit while instructions were given - no cell phones and no photos. Then we were led to our table and given a very extensive drink menu. It was really cool! There is no food served, only drinks. The drinks are well done !

Covert Cocktails

By Jesse B |

All you have to know -> this Chinatown speakeasy is a secluded, low key cocktail paradise. Even though the iron door, buzzer, rules and front room are a bit over the top, they definitely make for an unforgettable and intriguing experience. In a word, the cocktails are plentiful, creative and expertly made...each one was different and completely worthwhile.

A unique speakeasy experience

By Jake S |

In a scene of loud bars with your standard selection of beers and drinks, Hop Sing stands apart. From the entry process to the in-house rules, it truly is an experience each and every visit. The drink list is very creative, and delicious, and the wait staff feels like something out of the roaring 20s, with a modern twist.

The best cocktail bar in the USA!

By Rick L |

Simply the greatest cocktail bar in the USA! They have a strict set of rules that you must adhere to, such as a simple dress code and no photos or phones in the bar. It is so worth it! No cheap booze here....nothing but the finest liquors used in all of their cocktails We travel from Maine to Philadelphia just to visit here. It is a cozy room with candle lit tables that looks like it is right out of the prohibition era. The service is top notch. This is a cash only bar so bring your dollars. We always enjoy our visits to Hop Sings! Located within walking distance of Reading Terminal Market. There is no signage, just a steel door with a doorbell. Ring it once and wait. You will need to give them your ID and your whole party needs to be present to be seated.

Interesting cocktail bar

By LinseyS25 |

Read about this online and on here so thought we'd check it out as our hotel was just round the corner. As most of the reviews here explain, you ring the bell at the gate and the owner appears, asks where you heard about the place, etc. Remember if you're not American to take your passport as they don't accept driving licences from outside the USA as ID. We went midweek and happened to arrive at the same time as another couple. The four of us were taken into the foyer area and told the 'rules' of the bar. I had to stop myself from laughing as it comes across a bit gimicky. The interior is dark, speakeasy style and the extensive cocktail list is reasonably priced - pretty much what we paid in other places. Although it is a bit of a gimick it's a bit different so worth going along to. Table service was very good too.

Perfect evening with the best cocktails in the city

By Tyska T |

Incredible time here last night. Dark, relaxing, upscale vibes with perfectly crafted cocktails. Our server was very attentive, and we loved every drink we ordered- it makes it hard to choose a favorite! There is a dress code and some straightforward house rules. Highly recommended stopping in, and I can't wait to go back.

Super creepy. They scan your license and research you if you give a bad review.

By Brian C |

Super creepy. I went here on the 18th on request of a friend despite the silliness and wrote the below review. When in Chinatown the next Friday walking home from dinner, my husband said he wanted to check the place out, so we waited in line behind two other people. After those two went in, Mr. Lee (?) came out and said that me and my husband were not welcome. He called us both by our last names, and mentioned my negative review ("since you don't like my place..."). This means several things. When they take your licenses inside they are scanning it and retaining the information. (We had not yet given our licenses this night.) They are researching you at the very least, when you give a bad review. He had no way of knowing my husband's name unless he did a comprehensive search and flagged myself and him. So he is at least tying together your driver's license, Yelp account, and perhaps Facebook or worse. I reiterate, super creepy, which is way, way worse than silly. If any lawyers are reading this, let me know if this breaks the law. Thanks., ************************** Original review: Some drinks great, some ok. All overpriced Decor, ambiance nice. Exclusivity show was embarrassing, totally unnecessary. Overall, a bad taste.

Great Craft Cocktails

By Voyagereuse |

A visit to the Hop Sing Laundromat was one of the highlights of my recent trip to Philly. Featuring great craft cocktails, reasonably priced, in a swanky speakeasy room. There is no food served here, so my ratings on Trip Advisor refer to drinks, as there is no separate option. When you arrive at the unmarked entrance, ring the bell and you will be asked for an ID, after it is checked you will be invited inside and told the rules - no photos, no cell phone calls in the room. The room is lovely. Old school, darkish, romantic, a fun spot for cocktails. My husband and I sat at the bar, and speculated on how many nickels there are in the counter top. Something everyone does according to our knowledgeable bartender. The cocktail list is extensive and features top shelf liquors, fresh fruit and everything that makes craft cocktails wonderful. The bartender is meticulous with detail, taking great care and pride with the drinks. What a wonderful way to start or finish an evening out. I can't recommend this place high enough as a truly "Only in Philadelphia" experience. On this trip, we also had cocktails at the Franklin Mortgage Company, but enjoyed Ho Sing Laundromat much more due to its cocktail selection and spacious room. Things you need to know about Hop Sing Laundromat: No sign, remember the address: 1029 Race Street in Chinatown. Dress code: No sneakers, shorts, or sandals. Guys wear a shirt with a collar. IDs needed. If you have questions call them. Cocktails only served, no food, wine or beer. Special happy hour deals Tues-Fri, as of this posting. Closed Sundays and Mondays, as of this posing. Cash Only.

Speakeasy

By Matt |

We have wanted to visit this bar for years and finally made it. We have been to many "speakeasy bars" and this was one of the best. You have to know what you are looking for to find this bar. Hit the buzzer on then metal cages door. Hand your ID to the doorman and wait. You'll then be escorted inside, explained the rules (NO cellphones or pictures) and led to the bar. Nice speciality cocktails and decor. NO food, wine, or beer. Worth visiting at least once.

Great fun - enough said!

By jb812 |

If you want a fun experience as a couple of small group of adults in Philadelphia this is for you. The whole experience of looking for the secret door and then the questioning and reading of the rules before you are aloud in is all part of the fun of accessing this speak easy style bar. Cocktails were very good ask to sit at the bar to watch the staff show off their talents.

My duty to warn the unsuspecting

By cjones1913 |

Tried to go there with co-workers after work on a Tuesday evening, and I was turned away because I did not have a proper ID with me. I had my work ID, but they needed something with my birthdate on it. Now I bet you I'm older than most people on TA and older than the father of the guy at the door, but he wouldn't let me in. So I really can't review this place properly, but I can tell you that I had $1,000 cash on me (which is the only currency they use here) that will never see their cash registers or the pockets of the wait staff, ever. Their loss, because there are about 2000 bars in Philadelphia that will take my money which I suggest you travelers try. I guess they like turning away business. Strange business model.

Top-shelf Cocktails Await Beyond the Entrance with No Markings

No shorts, no sandals, no sneakers, no hats, no photography, no problem....No sign, no posted address. Just a metal door and a buzzer, nestled in the heart of Chinatown. Ring the buzzer & a staff member emerges from an inner door to scan your ID. Once inside, the ground rules are laid out in the entrance/waiting area, before you are directed into the bar area & seated at a table. The inside is very extravagant in a turn of the century, steel baron kind of way. Dark red walls, adorned with gold-frame portraits, softly illuminated by orange light. It is quite dark inside, but this is standard for your typical speakeasy. The focus, cocktails. The mixers, fresh-squeezed seasonal fruit juices and every kind of bitter, vermouth, liqueur, and the like that you could imagine. The liquor list: extensive. The back of the bar is stocked, bar to ceiling with top-shelf spirits. The service, excellent. Table seating only. The bar is strictly for the mixologists. This establishment is cash only, and drinks come in at a hefty $16 average, but are well-mixed, and strong. I recommend at least 1 visit for the experience.

So fun and great drinks too

Went twice and entirely different atmosphere on weekday vs weekend. No wait on a Thursday and very quiet and mellow. Line on the weekend, louder music and people talking inside on Saturday. Got in both times with no problem. Didn't need to dress up, main criteria seemed to be that you had cash - they don't take credit cards. Fun to try different drinks, and just a fun all around experience.

Owner is fantastic!! Pros- definitely knows how to run his business, fabulous fresh fruit drinks with odd concoctions (egg whites, blood oranges, etc) Great atmosphere, disciplined service. Cons- a bit pricey. $12-$15 PER drink. I'll be back!!

You have to try it to believe it.

The less said, the better about this fabulous cocktail lounge in Chinatown. There are surprises galore for the first time visitor - good surprises, don't worry. This is no a restaurant; it is a classic cocktail lounge. One tip - dress better than you would for a trip to the corner bar. No athletic shoes, torn jeans, tank tops, and etc. - unless you want to be refused admittance. It was a wonderful experience - not cheap, but worth every penny.
