Not a Bad Find

By Robearthefirst |

We went looking for Chinese food and stumbled across this place for dinner. The Spring Rolls and Pot Stickers Appetizers were some of the best we have had and was also very impressed with Sweet and Sour Chicken which tasted very fresh. Service was pleasant enough and Value was good

Very good cuisine

Restaurant found by chance while visiting Chinatown. We were very well received and advised by the hostess. The dishes were excellent and plentiful, prices reasonable. Don’t hesitate to ask for dessert, otherwise they will bring you the bill straight away.

Good food

Had the orange chicken, had the right amount of spice was fantastic. And the hostess/waitress was really kind and funny.

Highly recommend!

We had Kung Po chicken and pork fried rice. Both were very good! Great service and a friendly staff. We will definitely be back!

Average food and so so service.

By FREQTRAV12 |

Tried this place and were not impressed with the dishes. Lunch special seem to be pre-made and ready to serve. Service can be slow, impatient, and employees seem to yell at each other a lot. Prices are cheap though. Right in center of Chinatown. Worth a shot if you specifically like Hunan province dishes.

Delicious

I'm picky with Chinese food; there only a few restaurants in my home NYC I would ever eat Chinese. I will now add Hunan House to the list of Chinese places to enjoy in San Francisco. Scallion pancakes, crispy veggie rolls, pot stickers, sesame chicken, a beef dish...were each the best I've had in their category. Don't look further.

Go for the hot pot

By myghetto |

We stumbled across this restaurant at around 7:30 on a Wednesday night. Pretty much everything was closed and the choices were very limited. We decided on the hot pot. The portions of meat and vegetables are huge which is unlike any places you would find in Australia. The buk choy and another leafy dish we ordered were stacked and over flowing. The chicken breast and beef were very generous and thicker shavings. Our party of 3 were stuffed to the top. The service could be better but it is what you would expect in most Chinese restaurants.

Great Chinese food!!

Delicious!

Exploring Chinatown on a Friday evening, we were spoilt for choice when it came to places to eat, however we chose Hunan House because it was full of Chinese families, always a good sign. We were greeted warmly and immediately brought a pot of tea which was very nice. We ordered the 'Mandarin' set menu for 4 people at $14.95 each, which was great value for spring rollls, chicken and sweetcorn soup, rice and 4 huge main dishes. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. Ice water was provided for everyone on request and service was friendly and accommodating (we wanted to swap a dish on the set menu and this was agreed without hesitation). Would recommend and hopefully will visit again someday.

Delicious Appetizers

By Andrea B |

In search of appetizers, we stumbled upon Hunan House in Chinatown. The tea was a nice surprise and its warmer on the table was unique. That said, it was disappointing when the waitress brought out an aluminum can of Coke. We ordered spring rolls, dumplings and mango pudding and would recommend all of those items. Hunan House was an excellent find.

Delicious

Would highly recommend! We had the dumpling soup and Kung Pao chicken, both were delicious. The place was packed and I could see why!

Best Hunan Restaurant in the City

By Mark N |

if you like Chinese Hunan food that is hot and spicy or just want to try it this restaurant is the best place in SanFrancisco (and probably the entire Bay Area) to experience authentic Hunan food But beware - the food can be really hot and spicy - if you are not used to it you might want to ask your waiter to make it less spicy

Awesome dining experience

We thoroughly enjoyed the prawns, seafood, chicken, steak and vegetable dishes. The food was extremely tasty, quickly prepared and the service was friendly. Prices were very reasonable as well. Highly recommendable!

Authentic Chinese Food

By ModestoLori |

While there are many good restaurants in Chinatown, Hunan House is one of the best venues in which to enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine. Although the interior is not fancy, the appetizers and entrees offered are first rate. Our server was friendly and efficient. Our food was served promptly and was sizzling hot. Try the shrimp in lobster sauce for a truly delicious mélange of flavors! Great value for the money.

Comforting meal after a long day

By Foodieextreme F |

Visited January 2nd, 2026 After an amazing visit at Mark’s Hair Salon, I asked the gentleman at the salon for a Chinese restaurant recommendation, specifically one that served dumplings. He not only recommended Hunan House, but he actually walked us there. That small act of kindness set the tone for what turned out to be a wonderful dining experience. My daughters, who are six and seven, had been craving dumplings all day, especially after patiently waiting for over two hours while I got my hair done. When we arrived, we saw that the menu offered two types of dumplings, the Shanghai dumplings and the pan fried dumplings. We ordered both for the girls, and they absolutely devoured every single one. My husband and I did not even get a taste, which honestly says everything about how much they loved them. We also ordered chow mein noodles with just chicken and noodles for the kids, which they enjoyed very much. The portions were generous and the flavors were comforting and satisfying, exactly what they wanted. For my husband and I, we ordered the black pepper shredded pork and the crispy fried fish with explosive chilies. Both dishes were exceptional. The flavors were bold, well balanced, and incredibly enjoyable. Every bite was delicious, and we truly appreciated the care and skill that went into preparing the food. The service was quick, efficient, and courteous, and the food arrived hot and fresh. From the kindness of the initial recommendation to the quality of the meal itself, this experience made our day even more special. We are so grateful for this recommendation and could not be happier with our visit.

Great service

Stumbled on this place on a Friday night. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food was delicious and we'd definitely recommend it. Thanks.

Super Tasty!

Hunan House is the definition of a hidden gem. It might not look like much when you walk in—this isn’t a polished, picture-perfect restaurant—but don’t let that fool you. What it lacks in aesthetics, it more than makes up for in food and atmosphere. The staff are real characters. At first, they might come across as a bit brash (to the point where you wonder if they’re being rude), but give it a little time and you’ll see the charm shine through. Once they warm up to you, they’re actually funny, attentive, and add to the whole authentic experience. We ordered the sesame chicken, noodles, and rice, and I can honestly say we demolished it. Super tasty, full of flavour, and served lightning fast—no chance for photos because the food didn’t stay on the plate long! This is comfort food at its best: hot, fresh, and completely satisfying. If you’re looking for a fancy dining room, this isn’t the place. But if you want authentic, delicious Chinese food in the heart of Chinatown, with a bit of personality and character thrown in, Hunan House is a must-visit. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Would not go back

By V R |

Food was ok and fairly cheap, but seemed like typical American style Chinese food. Bad service- waited a long time for food, had to remind waitress twice to bring our drinks and rice. Bathroom was disgusting and dirty. Dirty dishes and clutter in dining area, and a staff member rolled dirty industrial sized trash can through the restaurant where everyone was dining. Didn't want to finish the food after seeing all that.

Good local Chinese food

The usual rule, if its full of people of Chinese origin, then its generally a good find applies here. The two of us found one meal to be good and one excellent, portions were generous, service is speedy so its not a lingering place. Recommended.

Very Good Chinese in Chinatown

By Q. Vaughan |

Wife and daughter and I went here on a recent "staycation" in San Francisco. We did no research ahead of time, but just walked around Chinatown until we found a place that looked good, and was reasonably crowded. Hunan House did not disappoint. Very typical menu for Chinatown, which means they had a lot of things that don't appeal to our American palates (chicken feet, ox tongue, pork intestine, etc.). But also a lot of chicken, beef and pork dishes - some familiar and some not, but everything we saw and smelled looked great. We had fairly unadventurous kung pao chicken and some vegetarian noodle dishes, and it was all outstanding. We would definitely go back. I don't think there's anything all that special about Hunan House. There are lots of good little hole in the wall places in Chinatown, especially if you get off the main drag of Grant St. We've had luck discovering other good places in the past, and we were happy to add another one to our list.

Great food

During an anniversary trip to the city we decided to visit China town and had lunch at this restaurant. I was very impressed with the service and food quality. We had a pot of hot tea to go with our lunch which was amazing. I definitely recommend this place!

Spicy and fresh seafood.

By Trigirl50 |

This is not the typical Chinatown, Cantonese meal. Their specialty is spicy, hot plates with fish or hot pots which is the Chinese version of fondue but better. Nice change from the typical Cantonese cuisine. It's what I grew up on. Great green scallion pancakes, spicy lamb skewers, and salty fried prawns eaten whole with she'll and heads on! The classic Chinese American favorites are average which my kids ate.

China Town Value

By MaddoDB |

Amongst so much choice in San Francisco’s China Town Hunan House is definitely worth considering. It perhaps doesn’t look in terms of look and location, but it has a good and varied menu, including the Chinese hotpot experience, and the food we had was well cooked and well presented. Plus a refillable pot of free China Tea was awaiting us when we sat down. I had one of the set meal and both quantity and quality hit the mark and all for less than $16.

Great Hunan style restaurant in SF Chinatown

By Jeffrey R |

We were looking for a Chinatown meal option with some bite, and came across Hunan House walking around. A good find - the wait staff were professional and quick, getting us settled with a nice big pot of tea and Tsingtaos. The menu included both classic Guangdong and Hunan fare, served (typically for SF) in a Guangdong/Hong Kong style (which is to say the plates come out as they do, so your meal is a varied series of flavors). We had both excellent seafood and more typical spicy Hunan fare, and it was all wonderful. A good find and an excellent meal! I hope it's there when I come back in a year.

Authentic and delicious

Recommended and deservedly so. Excellent service. Excellent food. The menu indicates customer favorites, and the recommendations are brilliant. Chinese beer is worth trying.

Nothing special

By fapan |

Good quality food not really Hunan style. The level of spicy is quite low to satisfy Western customers (despite the fact that I speak Chinese and I specified that we wanted very spicy). Predominant instead is the bittersweet probably liked by Americans (who love sugar in everything). Would not stay there again.

Delicious!

By FLTIFF |

Came here with 7 others and we all ordered a bunch of dishes to do family style, can't beat China Town and the prices! The food was fantastic and the staff was very accommodating to out larger party with no reservations, and very friendly with their recommendations as well. Everyone left there satisfied and full. Highly recommend, in fact we wanted to go back but our Company business had already planned our other night for us.

Great Chinese

Visited China Town with my boyfriend and went for dinner here. We didn't make a reservation. Food was very good and large portions. Nice comfortable seating and a good atmosphere. It was busy without being crowded. Worth s visit.

Tasty food and good selection of dishes

By Karl-Einar |

We just walked through China town and stumbled upon this place. It looked good with lots of chinese families around the tables. The food was really good and the service was good enough. We found this place to have decent prices.

Very good!

Went here on a late Tuesday afternoon. Ordered Hot sour & Won ton soup, as well as clams and BBQ oysters. All were tasty! Minus a star for the fact that they did not have any hot mustard to go with won ton soup. (Or... is that just a Hawaii thing?) Other than that- service was excellent and I would recommend this place regardless.

Nice restaurant

When you like Chinese food Hunan House is a restaurant you must visit. Several delicious fiches and menus to order if you like meat fish or only vegetables, for everyone a good choice.

Spicy China

By Herman dJ |

A real Chinese experience in this restaurant. Getting seated with a pot of tea and the menu. We decided for soup and 2 main dishes and apart of this rice and vegetables. Waitress advised to share the soup which was a good advice. The soup was there quickly just as the main dishes. We ordered spicy squid and lamb. This was exactly what we’ve got. The lamb was fully covered with peppers and ginger and was very tasteful. Also the squid tasted very well. We enjoyed the dinner but unfortunately couldn’t finish it all. We were offered a doggy-bag but since we were staying in a hotel that didn’t seem appropriate. Worth another vist

So we love Hunan food. The place was packed & I watched as our table was cleaned. The manager used a wet cloth & then got a dirty used napkin from the next table to dry the table. YUK! I cleaned the table again. The food was tasty. Service wasn't great. I had to wave my hand to get someone to take our order. Did I mention the food was good.

Authentic Chinese Food at reasonable price

By Martin M |

True Chinatown atmosphere with great and spicy food. Had a nice hot & sour soup to start with and shared spicy octopus, Szechuan lamb buried in chilies and some nice garlic veggie, All great taste and just the right amount of spiciness. Staff is friendly, nice and efficient, I can truly recommend this place to everybody looking for a tasty Chinatown experience.

Mediocre at best but truly disappointing

By Layne O |

We ordered spring rolls as an appetizer and they were served after our entrees. No hot mustard but served with a watered down ketchup called sweet and sour. We left half the order. Avoid!!! Lunch entrees came with a soup that I can only describe as chicken and noodle soup from a can. My Mongolian beef met expectations but nothing to return to order again. The mixed vegetables with prawns was ok. I was hoping for better.
