There are two locations and we dined in the one down south by the Westgate Cinema. We had friends visiting from London and were keen to have them try our favourite local dishes and chicken fried steak was certainly on the list. We headed over to Hyde Park Grill. Don't be off put by the strip mall location or the frankly outdated chain food outlet interior. The food is robust American fare and it is brilliant. We have been there a few times and everything we have tried has been great. This time though it was chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy all round. But first, the thing that made Hyde Park famous around these parts, a giant plate of buttermilk soaked fries with a crust that is dusted with peppercorns. They are meltingly soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside and come with a fantastic creamy peppercorn studded dipping sauce and they are a little slice of heaven. We were stuffed by the time the equally brilliant chicken fried steak arrived. For the uninitiated this is a piece of steak pounded flat with a meat tenderiser and then battered and deep fried with a creamy sauce to drench it in. The portion here is huge and a fab example of what a chicken fried steak should be, tender with a crunchy flavoursome batter......Despite our foray into the fries we managed to make a surprisingly good dent in our plates with the result that dessert was out of the question and we were all in need of a bit of a lie down! If you are looking for honest, tasty, American grub, this is as good a spot as any!

Our daughter-in-law said that the spinach salad was very good, so I tried it. What a wonderful suprise, the salad was loaded, and the honey/mustard and sweet bacon dressing were one of the top two dressings I have ever eaten. A very generous portion, and a lot of lagnape (little extras) in the meal. I only wish that they would open in the metro St. Louis area. This is definately one of my top 10 dining spots.

Best french fries. Crispy with a great dipping sauce. Enjoyed their blackened fish tacos. Shared dark chocolate cake covered in ganache and the banana cream pie with tons of fresh whipping cream. Loved them both!

We met family members at this busy little restaurant for a mid-day meal. The menu was broad enough to provide brunch for some and lunch for others. Our choices were eggs Bennedict, pancakes and eggs, a southwestern salad and a turkey and avocado sandwich. All were well prepared with fresh ingredients. Everyone was happy. Our waiter was attentive despite a busy dining room. The atmosphere was bustling and friendly.

I take friends from in town and out of town. It has been my go to place for years. The food is consistent, the small rooms in this old home makes talking and listening easy. I love the fried egg sandwich, the fries are very special, a wonderful spinach salad, great chicken fried steak, and a spicy batter fried avocado that is a great choice you don't see on many menus. I've heard desert is good but the serving size has yet to leave room.

We stopped in for lunch while in Austin for business and this place was great. The service was truly spectacular. I had the lunch special for the day which was fish and chips and it was really good. The chips (fries) are excellent.

It's a shame. We have been to this restaurant both locations. The one that is getting this review is the true Hyde Park location. First the sodas were flat and that would have been ok but we had to really ask for them to come from another fountain in the bar. We had really liked this place in the past but we will not be back. The food we received was very salty and the mashed potatoes were uneatable and cold. As hungry as we all were we are what we could and left the rest. I told the waiter that everything was very salty and told him to tell the chef. No one not the chef, manager or anyone came to inquire why we would have said this. All 6 plates had all the potatoes still on them and at least half of the rest of the meal. What a shame Hype Park Grill!! This location only, we have been to the other and never had a problem like this. We expect better than what we got.

I rediscovered the original location on Duval. The food was so good that I went back the next day and took a friend. Chicken fried steak, burgers and Pastrami sandwich are terrific. I love the batter dipped French fries but then who doesn't. The onion rings are pretty tasty too. I have only been to the original location on Duval so I can't speak for the other locations. Hyde Park Grill is an Austin institution. Hope that the chain locations do not screw that up.

I've eaten here many times in the past - I remember the french fries being good. So I was in town a few days and stopped in for lunch on 11/1. For me, the meal really missed. I ordered a spinach salad with chicken. For the price, I considered the proportion small. Grilled chicken added $4.95 to the meal but there were only 4 or 5 small pieces of chicken, which were cold. There are different receipts for a spinach salad but I felt the items added to the salad (e.g., raw carrots) detracted.

Decent comfort food but would be much better if served hot. Had good service. Would prefer a bit more of a friendly welcome. My salmon was good and served hot, but the vegetables served with it were lukewarm. The sweet potato side was bland. Lot of fries piled on top of the Horseshoe dinner, but fries were not hot either. Serving their food hot would make a world of difference. Parking was a challenge.

Met up with some great friends today and had a wonderful lunch at Hyde Park. We ordered their famous French Fries which are out of this world and then Onion Rings, Artichokes then came our main meal. The food was fresh, tasty and reasonable. Thanks for a great experience

My family and I enjoyed our night out here. We started with the fries as an appetizer and they were pretty tasty. I had the pan roasted chicken and it was pretty good. My husband and daughter had the bacon glazed meatloaf and said it was not bad. My son had the ribeye steak and said it was okay. My son and husband tried the Painkiller drink, which just brought pain as it was not tasty, very small and quite expensive. My margarita was not very good, but my daughter enjoyed the Old Fashioned that she selected. The service was very good and the old home converted to a restaurant was very quaint and cozy, so we did have a great time just hanging out as a family here.

Our group of 4 went for lunch on a Friday. We were seated right away. Food was very good. Servings were very big. Easily could have taken some to go. I had fish tacos and my wife had the grilled chicken guacamole sandwich. Both were excellent. Staff was friendly and attentive. I would definitely return.

This was recommended to us by our upscale B&B as a great neighborhood restaurant, and it didn't disappoint. Fun interior, lots of wood and artwork for a hip vibe. The menu is pretty varied American bistro fare; everything we tried (and we went back) was excellent. Best picks: roast chicken, chicken-fried chicken, pumpkin bread pudding, and any of the grilled veggies. Portions were generally huge; my grilled broccoli was half a head of broccoli, perfectly grilled. They don't take reservations so be prepared to wait if you are dining after 7 pm. Very reasonable prices, good service. Wish we had one of these in our neighborhood.

Charming local restaurant we've enjoyed for many years. Dined there again last night and it was terrific. They have daily specials for both lunch and dinner. Excellent desserts too!

I chose this place for my birthday as it has always been my favorite place in Austin. The food is always excellent - the cornbread, the fries, the greens.

Great food, awesome service, fantastic atmosphere. Try the Horseshoe and be sure to get an order of HP Fries for the table to share. Delicious!

Between our party of 5, our orders consisted of burgers, blackened fish tacos, and a chicken salad sandwich. Everything was delicious! The fries were out of this world! If I remember correctly I was told they are buttermilk battered. They come separately from your meal and are priced at $2 for sandwich size order, $3 for small, $5 for medium, and $7 for large. I ordered the sandwich size and it was a very generous portion as shown in my photo. I can't imagine how big a large order must be!

Food here is good but not great, especially compared to the past good meals we've had in this restaurant. Nice beer selection. Austin is a good restaurant town so this place needs to step up or be left behind.

We had a party of 7 about 8:30 pm. Great service and great food. Chicken Friend Steak for most in the group and they gave it a thumbs up. Fries are wonderful here and the sides. We will be back again soon!

This is one restaurant that has it all - good food, atmosphere and wait staff. Although we were there for lunch, the bar area looked like a fun place for the evening. If you like pimento cheese - you will love Hyde Park's version - huge sandwich and delicious!

Cozy, with local people, not a touristy spot. Good happy hour and food is good. Nice comfortable place to enjoy a drink ond or a meal with friends.

The restaurant appears to be an old home turned into a restaurant- so if you like the charm of an old place, this is the place for you. The fries were delicious! Didn't care for the corn tamales, but we all thought the fried avocado appetizer was very, very good!! We would all definitely order that again. The other entrees were pleasing as well. The waitstaff was good as well. Overall, it's a nice place to grab a quick meal with nice food.

Just avarage. Nothing outstanding abut this place. Vine is really bad. I ordered a glas of riesling that tasted like a headache out of a box.

As we are on a driving trip between Arizona and Texas, and with our dietary restrictions of no dairy, no sugars and no grains of any kind, we search for restaurants where we can have some good protein and veggies. We picked the wrong one. We had four in our party, and one of them picked the steak (all full of fat and gristle), one picked a salad, and the greens were wilty, another picked chicken, which was super dry, and then the service was soooo slow. In this day in age, we recognize it's difficult to find good help, but when you tip 20%, and they make $25 per table, for example, you expect some decent level of service..not this time..we won't be back. Very disappointing,

A favorite of my UT student-son. Very nice service. Comfortable, casual atmosphere but you could certainly go there for a special, formal event. We had a big lunch so my wife and I had the 3 sides for dinner. Never seen that before. Order any 3 of their sides. It was the perfect amount. Order the onion rings as a starter. Some of the best we have ever had.

I recently visited HP Bar and Grill, an Austin fave of mine. I have visited HP Bar and Grill many times in the past and also enjoyed the art deco...and have personally bought several of the paintings displayed. I hadn't been there in a year or so, and unfortunately customer service under the present management has taken a big decline. I personally witnessed very unprofessional behavior on the part of management...so disappointing. Thank you. Carol C

Delightful, delicious and charming restaurant tucked into a quiet neighborhood. The service was attentive, and food delicious. So glad to have tried this little place.

This restaurant is perfect for a family to eat a bit better or a couple to have a nice meal without breaking the bank. The food is quite good. The soups in particular are excellent. Atmosphere is casual and the service in consistently excellent. Well run restaurant that is an excellent value. (We went during homecoming weekend and the place was filled with H.S. students out on a date.)

I know they have several items that are good i.e. the salmon but their Burgers top most of the best in Austin. They use Angus beef and their battered fries cooked in Peanut oil are to die for!

Hyde Park Bar and Grill in Hyde Park, not so much the bar, but hard to beat the grill. Food is awesome, I had the meatloaf but looked like just about everyone else was having the steak or the chicken fried chicken, both looked amazing. Shiner was cold...perfect. Service was outstanding, nice atmosphere, classic Austin, this is the original with shiplap walls and all, in and old house. Reasonable prices. Try the fried green beans, you won't be sorry. Bring your appetite, generous portions.

I have eaten at this place countless times. There almost always seems to be a wait (it is that good), but not excessively so. To me, their signature is their fries. Beyond great. They have an extensive menu of "comfort food", from sandwiches to chicken and pasta, etc. The atmosphere is nice (I think an old house that has been expanded a few times), the service is pleasant, and the bartender is a master. If you get a chance to go here, you should jump at the chance. I am from Austin, and have been going here for many, many years. Don't be surprised if the Owner seats you, too.

We returned to this neighborhood restaurant located near our daughter's house in Hyde Park because we enjoyed the (several) meals we'd eaten there before. This time, however, it was a huge disappointment because the food was overly-spiced, which seems to be a growing trend. There was a group of six of us and we ordered a variety of dinners including fish tacos, meatloaf, and chicken fried steak. Because of the over-seasoning of dishes, what happened after the food arrived was like a merry-go-round of plates. The fish tacos were too spicy for one of us (Person 1), so they traded with a person who had ordered the meatloaf (Person 2), but Person 1 couldn't eat that either because it was too heavily spiced and burned their mouth. So person 1 traded the meatloaf with person 3's chicken fried steak. Person 3 absolutely loves spicy food, so they were confident they could enjoy the meatloaf, but Person 3 agreed it was terribly spicy and scraped as much of the sauce off as they could. Another one of us, Person 4, had ordered the meatloaf on an earlier visit to this restaurant and loved it, so they ordered it again. This time, however, it was awful, and after scraping off as much sauce as possible, Person 4 wanted to wash the offending meatloaf with water. Of the six of us, only two diners thought their food was satisfactory. We prefer a lighter hand at seasoning that complements, rather than buries, the main ingredients' natural flavors because we prefer to savor the main ingredients instead of simply burning our mouths on spices. We may return, but we'll be very careful to question the server thoroughly about the level of spices to ensure the food is naturally flavorful instead of just searingly spiced. The ONLY reason I rated this restaurant so high is because of wonderful previous visits and the delightful server. He noticed that our plates were going all over the table and offered to get us something else. By that time, we'd passed plates around so much it was like eating from a Lazy Susan and we just wanted to leave and put the horror behind us. It is a shame when a restaurant feels obligated to over-season food, either to follow the current fad of burning patrons' mouths or to hide the natural flavors of the food. We've eaten here many times, loving our meals and promising to come back. This experience, however, has made us question the direction the restaurant is going and our willingness to suffer through such a horrible ordeal again.

We recently had an evening meal here, and it was very good. It's not much of a place to go for atmosphere or exceptional comfort, but the food was very tasty. My wife had crab cake, and it was the best we've ever had. The food the other members of our party selected was also all very good.

This is a well-known place in Austin, located in an old house. The place has a funky charm with good service and good food. We were there for a special occasion -- family birthday -- and it was very pleasant.

I stopped by for the meatloaf. The food was very bland. They were accommodating. The collards greens were undercooked. Great location and atmosphere, but I do not see what all the hype is about. I have had better food than this place in Austin. This was a little pricey for the taste of the food.

Went recently and received great services and enjoyed everything we ordered. Especially the chicken fried chicken, avocado fries and chocolate layer cake.

I enjoyed the salad with hearts of palm and other goodies. Silvia was very attentive and kept my coffee cup full. My friend enjoyed the Asian chicken salad. The Buche de Noël was a nice surprise.

We really enjoyed our meal here! We had the HP burger with fries, the avocado fries, the chicken fried steak with mash potatoes, jalapeño corn bread and peach pudding. It was all excellent! The beer selection was pretty good also. The only things was service was a little slow and the restrooms a little beat up. Otherwise, this is definitely a good place to eat. Good portions so you might share like we did.

This restaurant was within walking distance of our b and b and we really enjoyed our fish tacos. Our waitress was really helpful with suggestions on sights to see also.

Always reliable for good salads and irresistible French fries. Waiter ok but seemed not to care much abt our lunch. Nothing bad, just blah service. Still, I'll go back and look forward to another good meal and the usually more attentive service.

Though I don't live in Hyde Park, I have several friends who do and one of our favorite spots is The Hyde Park Bar & Grill. It's worth going there for the french fries alone, but the rest of the food, especially the chicken fried steak, is great as well... they DO have some other more healthy items on the menu, if they didn't, my arteries would surely be clogged by now! Try it, you'll love it!

I have been coming to Hyde Park for decades. The food is fresh and tasty. You can hear the conversation with your friends and family. It's just delightful. I went for lunch. I had the Sonora salad and steamed dumplings. The dumplings were hot and moist and the sauce was nicely spiced. The salad was fresh with nice pickled onions, black beans, and a mild cheese. My friend had a burger and fries. These were also very good. We did not lick our plates, but there were only a few crumbs left. I also had coffee which was fresh and strong. Full and happy.

Located in the funky, quaint area of Hyde Park in central Austin, this restaurant is located in an old house but renovated upscale but comfortable. They have the best French fries ever! Crackly on the outside, hot and soft on the inside. We also tried the Wom Kim dessert. Its kind of a peach bread pudding, only better. It is made with butter and buttermilk and drizzled with heavy cream. Yummm! The service was excellent. I've never had a bad experience here.

Sweet and juicy chicken fried chicken, diced sweet potatoes tossed in salt, pepper, and a bit of cayenne, thick, creamy buttermilk mashed potatoes, and I have to type out all of the desserts: peach pudding cake, dark chocolate layer cake, tiramisu, huge banana cream pie, and (my fav) blueberry & cherry cinnamon roll cobbler. Very creative and everything very fresh.

My burger was cold, but I had waited so long, I didn't want to send it back. The bun was cold and dry and fell apart as I was eating it. The $1 extra I paid for bacon arrived as one, thick bunch, with 3 slices stuck together, on the side of the plate. The mayo served with the burger was missing and the person who brought the food looked put-out that I requested it from him and not my waitress. Our waitress was very friendly, but I came to eat and was very disappointed.

First off, get the fries, whether as a group appetizer or as a side dish, you'll be glad you did. Ok, now for the rest of the review. If you're in the neighborhood, simply look for the iconic fork statue. Inside there's plenty of nice artwork to see and good music to listen to. Seating is quite comfortable. Service is friendly and there when you need them! I'd tell you more about the food, but I still need to stop by more. The Chicken Guac BLT was great, however, with any place I enjoy this much, I'll have to try out more of the menu. Overall, this place is nicely dialed-in.

They have a lot of choices on the menu and the food is very good. My wife raved about how good the catfish was.

My husband and I and our two kids are here while on vacation in Austin. It was a great experience. We started with the queso, which was tasty and interesting with black beans and guacamole mixed in, and the fried avocado, which was also tasty and interesting. My husband had the lunch special, a pork sand which with braised collard greens on top; I had a turkey Reuben, fries, and the grilled broccoli (which was a whole head of broccoli!)--all very tasty. (The kids had stuff off the kids menu-hotdog which my son didn't eat because he filled up on queso and daughter had the Mac and cheese which was homemade and delicious). We finished it off with a piece of 7 layer cake (the guys), and a chocolate flan cake (the girls). I like the combination of the flan cake and the caramel sauce was yummy (I could have licked it off the plate!), but the cake itself was rather stale. Our server, Mitch, was good, but a tad forgetful. All in all, a great experience!

We've been to Hyde Park Grill more than a few times, but not in the last couple of years. It was brought up in conversation and I had really forgotten about it. We came in on a Saturday night, it got crowded quick. We had a couple of drinks, I had the salmon, awesome my wife had a pasta chicken dish - nice and spicy. Lastly we ordered a piece of banana creme pie, perfect. Service was what it should have been, not pretentious. I look forward to returning. Drinks are NOT watered down, Thanks!

This converted house has seating in different rooms, which gives it a cozy, visiting-friends vibe. Staff was knowledgeable, attentive without being intrusive. Brunch menu offered several options, that I will try next time. Food was creative, hot, fresh, delicious. Plenty of parking in the rear of building, but it can get crowded.

Go to place for great fare. Don't forget to order the Hyde park fries. Friendly staff comfortable noise level and comfortable homy feel.

Been coming here for 30 years, but haven't been in a while. Introduced my hubby to this fine establishment and to their delicious HP fries and sauce! With him being from Springfield, Illinois (home of the horseshoe "sandwich"), we had to try their Texas Horseshoe, which was pretty tasty! A lightly toasted piece of bread, topped with ground chuck, cheese sauce, fries, more cheese sauce, then topped with green onions and diced tomatoes. The cheese sauce is really good. Definitely worth a try, especially if you never get to Springfield!

To me a gourmet restaurant is a rarity in that it has large portions. This restaurant combines quantity with quality. The wine selection is nice and pares well with the menu. The staff is friendly and well trained.

As an Austinite ( born and raised) I really wanted to like this place. We ordered the fries as an appetizer and they were seriously the best I’ve ever had. They were so amazing. I had such high hopes for the meal. I ordered the Sonoma salad which had a description of corn, beans, pico, pickled onion and more. For 9$ , I expected a flavor explosion ( or at least something besides iceberg). I was so sad to receive a side salad, Something I would get at a mediocre restaurant. The brunch drink specials were ok but the waiter mentioned he was breaking the rules after delivering our sixth drink. I think three mimosas per person isn’t outrageous and we were just talking quietly. We definitely won’t be back.

In Austin for Nature's Treasures sale. We met my sister for lunch. Very attentive and conscientious waitress. My sister ordered a large salad and forgot to mention that she needed the cheese and croutons removed. When it arrived, she told our waitress who immediately took back the salad and had a fresh one back in under 5 minutes. Very thoughtful. All of our selections were delicious, nicely prepared and presented. The bill was under $40 for the three of us (I had a Bloody Mary). We've been there before and will come back.

we were staying down the street at a BnB and another guest told us about it. so we went for lunch. it was very nice. I had the texas onion soup and the sorenta salad. both were tasty and good values. my wife had the fish tacos; very good as well. the waiter, tanner, was very personable and did a really nice job. it also has a bar and we plan to go for a drink one evening.

The specials of the day were fantastic. Really tasty traditional dishes with an upscale twist, without the upscale prices.

This is a really fun location and a great spot for a night out or a special lunch. This is one of my favorite places to take family or friends visiting from out of town.

Great food! Feels very homemade! Especially if you're from out of town. Can't complain. I would definitely come back! Thumbs up! 👍

A couple of days ago, I had lunch. The waitress just popped by very rapidly. She was not friendly at all. She called me "sweetie" which I detest. In spite of this, I still gave her an adequate tip. I ordered a pastrami reuben which was very good; however, the bottom piece of bread was a little damp.

Our family and friends love this restaurant. We use their South Austin site, located in the Westgate shopping center. Their menu offers an eclectic mix of newer, healthy eating options, and old southern cooking favorites. They also have a full service bar with a good wine list. There is a nice patio to enjoy Austin's weather and cuisine at the same time. We nearly always order their exceptional Buttermilk Battered Fries served with a tangy dipping sauce. My favorite entree is the Chicken Fried Chicken and Mashed Potatoes with Gravy. Nearly all the food is excellent!

Love their food, really good chicken fried chicken and love their home made dressing. Also be sure to visit for brunch, great drink specials.

Just came from Hyde Park bar and Grill on 290. My husband And I were so glad we did. Not only was the food downright yummy, they had local artists artwork on the walls for you to look at while you’re waiting for them to prepare your meal. They have indoor and outdoor seating for when the weather is more pleasant. The tables are not crowded together. My husband got the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, & mac & cheese. He cleaned his plate. Loved the mac & cheese the most. Chicken fried steak was decent and mashed potatoes had a little bit of a pleasant spice. I really chose wisely with their Ruben. I discovered it was best to pour the dressing on the sandwich instead of trying to dip it because it’s so full of thick cuts of meat. I like mine cut a little thinner, but it didn’t take away from the fact that it was really super yummy. I didn’t get a side dish just the sandwich. It was large enough that I still only ate half. So I have a second Delicious sandwich waiting for me.

Big portions. Food is standard American, like a diner. In a converted house. Bar occupies most of front room. Come here for "no surprises." Extensive menu and all the food is good--salads, sandwiches, dinners.

This is my favorite moderately priced restaurant. My favorite dishes are natural, no preservatives hamburgers and salmon, either on an Asian salad or the dinner which ilike with mashed potatoes and whatever the vegetable (I have never been disappointed) of the day is. During holidays, it is busy and a bit noisy. Most of the time it is quiet; there is never a long wait and the service is excellent.

We were holidaying in the area and found this restaurant and it was so good we ate there twice. Staff were very professional and the food was excellent. Plus they had great wines on special at very attractive prices. We couldn’t ask for anything better. If we ever come back to the area again we will certainly visit this restaurant again.

So comfortable -- from the decor to the food. They were busy on our weekend visit but still it was no problem to make some adjustments for our paleo companion. The lentil soup was a hearty choice but not overly filling. The BLT was reportedly outstanding.

This neighborhood favorite was independently recommended by three different persons. We only had hamburgers, but they were well prepared, flavorful, and promptly served. The value was good. We will be coming back.

We love to eat here when we visit Austin! The food is wonderful, atmosphere cozy, servers are always knowledgeable and friendly.

Being not from Austin, the name and place (and interior) looked looked like a normal chain restaurant. The Wednesday special happened to be the Cuban and it was surprisingly good. Actually, all the food was good, the service was vey good and responsive as week. I was honestly expecting to be underwhelmed but walked away pleasantly surprised. Besides the Denny's looking setup (complete with bar), a very good value. I will be back next time I am in town.

We ate here after a college night at a local hotel. We were surprised that there was no wait time, it was about 9:30 p.m. We ordered an appetizer that was not brought out until after our main dishes were served. The ambiance is quite eclectic and is a fair representation of Austin's artsy vibe that permeates much of the city. The food was good, and our party of 6 ate for a little under $100.00 including tip. The food is pretty much Americana with an Austin twist of hippie here and there. Think vegan inspired cuisine, with traditional hamburgers for those with the need for a meaty meal. Overall a good experience, even with the delayed chips and queso.

I have eaten here for over a decade, drawn originally by the legendary fries. It's in a nice part of Austin near my home so plenty of reason to drop in when hungry. Has a sort of upbeat vibe, good service, and a small decent bar. Time it well and you'll have instant seating and service. At busy times, expect to wait but not too long. Old style house, with the sort of facilities to match, this is not a modern restaurant with antiseptic restrooms. Usually displaying local art on the walls too, which can be interesting. Food choice is a little limited -- southwestern style cuisine, which means a lot of fried stuff, tons of meaty options, and not a lot for vegetarians. Used to have a killer blackened tuna which disappeared when prices rose (this place likes to remain relatively affordable) but they tend now to only have tilapia and salmon. If you want meatloaf, or chicken fried steak, this is your place. Weekends have breakfast til early pm, the migas are decent too. Generally a little bland, flavor wise, but decent portions, well presented and usually clean. The bar offers a good range of wines, spirits, more limited in beer choices, only 3 beers on draft, one normally Shiner (sadly) so perhaps two beers to choose from, typically regional. Always like visiting, the staff are good, but in the last year, I've had a couple of experiences that turned me off. The fish and chip special I had one Monday evening came with some of the fish still uncooked. They wiped it from the bill but since I like to eat at the same time as my fellows, I did not accept an option to have something else cooked since they were already eating. Then tonight, my fish tacos came with a 1.5 inch piece of plastic in the slaw. Ouch. They apologized, again did not charge but it ruined a nice family Sunday dinner. Not sure what's going on in the kitchen and maybe I am just unlucky but two badly prepared meals in less than a year is putting me off. Still like the vibe, the fries (mostly, sometimes they are not as well cooked) and it's a good place for a glass of wine. But vegetarians better like lentil soup or salads, not much choice otherwise. So it's a solid 'ok', but not very good. I'll be giving them more chances though, they're just too convenient.

Converted house on Duval that is now a cozy, intimate restaurant. White linen, black garbed waitstaff, award winning Fries, and some interesting menu items. Kind of a blend of the best of upscale dining and cafe food

I had not been to this place for about 6 years, but my recent visit was just as enjoyable as previous visits. They have Texas favorites, bar foods, sandwiches, salads, and a number of eclectic dishes. The fries, which are batter dipped (think tempura batter), are thought to be the best in all of Austin. They also have a number of Vegetarian options. My companions ordered a salad, fish tacos, & a Reuben sandwich. I ordered the 3 sides plate. My choices were: BBQ broccoli (NOT BBQ, just wood-fire grilled to a slightly crisp perfection), steamed green beans (extremely thin and crisp whole young beans), and collard greens (chiffonade). Each was perfect in both freshness and preparation. The 2 children had a hot dog and mac & cheese, respectively. The server was very patient with the children who were too young to read the menu, reciting the numerous drinks to them before they settled on lemonade. The children's drinks come in a plastic cup w/a snapped on lid. Perfect for no spills. Very kid friendly place. The wait here can be quite long in peak times on weekends. We arrived at 5:45 p.m. on a Saturday night, and were seated immediately. But, after 6:00, a wait line formed quickly. Don't be put off by the seeming lack of parking. There is a parking lot directly behind the restaurant and across the alley behind it. People were also parking on the street behind it, and I saw no signs indicating that you could not park on the street. The drink menu indicated a large variety of craft beers and drinks, but we did not have any alcohol on this visit.

My wife and I ate here recently. She had chicken fried steak and I had chicken fried chicken.... the Texas state dinner if choice. Both were well prepared and delicious. A lot can be said for a place that has. good food at reasonable prices. Good service was also an added treat, albeit if food prep and delivery were a little slow

We went in for a few drinks and appetizers after a day of sight seeing. This place is a cute hip little place. The appetizers and drinks were very good and acceptable pricing. Loved the whole art display and set up of place. Enjoyed our time there visiting with our adult children and the atmosphere of this place. Would love to return. We had Avocado Fries, Battered green beans , dumplings, Italian Cream Cheese Cake and drinks. All delicious. Great way to end our day !

Had the chicken fried chicken with mashed potato and salad. It was okay nothing to brag about. Don’t know that I would go again. It was just okay

This is a well established place and in an older part of Austin. Parking stinks but is worth the effort. The menu is pleasant for a couple or family.

Very nice, food about average and honestly nothing to write home about. That said I liked the small portion of Chicken Fried Steak, the fried cauliflower was not good, and the mash was in desperate need of gravy. They are smart they served my Grandson very fast and had a great meal for him. A nice chain restaurant, not too expensive and clean looking. The special pan fried chicken was good, but $13.99 for 1/4 of a chicken is ridiculously high in a college town. A bit pretentious and overpriced.

I won’t be back. Took 2 people to prize aparts ‘4 hour smoked’ aka microwaved ribs. Burger frozen too

We had eaten here several times, and the food was much better. Appetizers: salmon cakes had LOTS of onions; green beans were good; artichoke hearts were good. Meatloaf was very good. Chicken fried sirloin steak was disappointing; lots of gristle around the edge of the steak was concealed by coating; the gristle should have been cut off beforehand; the steak wasn't very big and it had an excess of coating. The Korean beef salad was VERY salty. The hamburger was okay, just average.

We were attending a concert at UT and were looking for something close that we wanted to try and was more than a quick meal. My wife and a friend dropped in for a meal on Thursday night. We arrived early (6:00) and were seated right away. Our waitress, Rylie, was very corgial and make great recommendations for drinks and the meal. Enjoyed the green bean appetizer- amazingly good. The menu has something for everyone- think comfort food with a little twist. Portions were ample and service was quick. Overall, with drinks (three vodkas), 2 glasses of wine and dinner we were out for $ 95 for three people. Given the quality of the food, service and ambiance, we all felt it was on our list of places to return and kicked ourselves for not trying it earlier.

Hyde Park has been around for many years but still a favorite of many Austinites. Located in an old house, it is warm and comfortable but not a lot of parking. I had a house salad and their lintel soup, a long time staple. Very good. One of my friends had a vegie burger and a salad.

We had a family dinner after graduation at UT. I had the Pork and Mac. It was very good-the pork was tender and well seasoned. The pickled peppers offset the richness of the mac n cheese. For dessert we shared the peach cake/pudding. OMG! Don't miss out on that.

We found Hyde Park Bar & Grill while looking for a nice local family place. Although it has a white tablecloth feel, the food and prices are down home. Whether traveling down I35 or just visiting Austin, it is a place to stop and enjoy. We are planning a trip to Austin just to have a Sunday brunch at HP.

My husband and I were in Austin for a Studio 1A music gig at UT and decided to have an early dinner at one of our old neighborhood favorites before tackling the rush hour traffic to head back north to Georgetown. The crowds had not started arriving yet and we were seated by the window - my favorite place. I had the Grilled Salmon with Grilled Broccoli and Rice - YUM...I almost licked the plate. My husband had the slow Roasted Chicken with Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans. He commented that it was nice to eat a crisp green bean that did not have all the flavor cooked out of it. Not only did he eat all his dinner, he ordered a side of the Jalapeno Corn Bread AND the Banana Cream Pie. I have to confess, I had a bite of each and they were wonderful. Love this place in the old Hood!

We went for dinner on a weeknight. We were hoping to find something good but were disappointed. The server was great, but the food was less than average. Kind of cafeteria-style food (reminded me of Luby's that I went to with my grandparents when I was a kid). To be fair, we are foodies so most people might consider this average instead of poor. Things we did not like: the mac and cheese (sauce was broken), veggie burger (extremely bland), salad was straight out of a plastic bag and browning/wilting. Things that were ok: fried artichokes and sautéed greens. The mashed potatoes were really good. Decent wine list. Service was fast and timely. The restaurant itself is in nice spot, the bar setting looks charming. And there was awesome art (photographs) on display. Probably won't be back.

We have made many visits to Hyde Park Bar & Grill, and feel it’s a local institution. There’s that iconic fork sticking up out front; this visit there was a graduation cap and 2018 tassel atop the fork...and a selfie stand to capture that view. We enjoyed great service by Jackson for an early dinner on a relatively quiet Saturday evening. This time we ordered the Hyde Park fries to start. These are battered, fried until golden, and served with their special sauce dip (which is reminiscent of Russian dressing). Our drinks arrived rather late, well after the fries. Then we had chicken fried chicken, which came with buttermilk mashed potatoes and cream gravy. One of us chose collards and bacon and the other grilled broccoli as sides. Everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Hyde Park has happy hour specials Monday-Friday only. I wish they ran early bird specials on weekends.

We came here for lunch, and the food was uniformly delicious. Of special note were the avocado BLT, an elevated form of a sandwich that can often be blah; the grilled broccoli; and the spice roasted sweet potatoes. The prices were reasonable, too. Our only complaint is that the service was fairly slow, especially when we were trying to pay the bill.

I love this place and I have for years. Just about everything is excellent, especially the french fries and Hyde Park sauce, which I crave from time to time. I went for brunch and was actually kind of disappointed with the migas. Not cheesy, creamy, spicy with crisp tortilla strips. Could have used more cheese and the eggs were scorched. So, still love the place, but maybe avoid the migas.

This past Thursday my granddaughter and I had a lunch date. She had said "we can just get some tacos" but (Austin/SA feud aside) I thought we needed a place to sit and chat. So I took her to Hyde Park on Duval, a restaurant that I was familiar with but one that she had never visited. I have now made her a believer. She is in her early 20's, rail-thin and probably doesn't eat enough. But on Thursday she had the big plate of chicken fried chicken with all the trimmings and did it proud. As usual the service was great - just enough attention paid to keep our tea glasses full but no hovering. The food was well-prepared and so good that we ordered take-out for her roommate. Even though Hyde Park is in a old house with various rooms (lots of charm) they have managed to arrange it so private conversations are possible. Nice. It was a very good lunch - on many levels. In fact, she wants to do it again - now that is a success.

If you order take out, check your order before you leave. I was extremely disappointed in the shrimp and grits order I got. The menu says 5 and I got 4 cold shrimp. The presentation was sad looking, particularly since I was expecting 5 shrimp.

Stopped in for a light lunch. Casual place, nice menu. Special fries with special sauce? Gotta try that. My wife and i asked to split an order of fried fish with fries - glad we did - since we were not very hungry, half of the order was plenty. Came on two plates without our asking. The fries really were especially good, and the unique dipping sauce was a treat. The horseradish sort of sauce for the fish was excellent too. My daughter had fried artichoke hearts and this too came with two dipping sauces. Friendly, fast service. We are very happy that we stopped here.

Subject of review says it all! Awesome food, and the service was great as well. Thank you for a great dinner!

My usual order is the mixed green salad with the cilantro lime dressing. Always hits the spot. The staff is always wonderful. When I'm with a friend and want a rich comfort food dessert, I go for the Wom Kim's Peach Pudding.

I really like this friendly little restaurant in the heart of Hyde Park. They have some very unique choices on their menu along with your Texas favorites. Went recently with my family and all four of us had no problem finding something we liked at reasonable prices. Atmosphere is quiet casual with large windows looking out with local art on the walls and a small bar.

30 yrs... that is a long time to be in business. Especially if you happen to be a restaurant. Met with a client for lunch and frankly it had been years since I ate here. Hyde Park still has the homey feeling which is pretty indicative of the house the restaurant is housed in. I opted for a BLT which was the lunch special. The sammy came with the ubiquitous famous fries. Crunchy bread, two big slabs of bacon and avocado were a good combination. Our server, who had some cool purple hair, was prompt and friendly. It is nice to know that they still provide a quality lunch in a nice atmosphere. Even after being around for 3 decades.

Went here for a Thursday lunch when their special Avocado BLT. Parking is an issue, but there seems to be enough in the small lots behind the buildings. Tried their lightly-battered and then fried thick slices of avocado. Served with a thick sauce. Quite hot when it came out and I was surprised the avocado had not just melted to goo - it held together well. The BLT was served open face so you could add dresing as desired (it was really fine as-is), and a large helping of their famous fries (again lightly battered and then fried). I liked it all and would return.

Lovely atmosphere and really good freshly cooked food so good we went there twice on our visit from Ireland to my Son currently living in Austin. A return visit is the best recommendation. Great friendly service, busy but that is a good sign.

Friendly service, nice ambiance in restaurant. Had the special of the day, pork sandwich, could have used a bit more pork in it, but good flavor. Get gravy on side and that approach avoids a soggy sandwich. Fries really good. Got green beans and artichoke appetizers -- pretty tasteless in and of themselves -- but the ranch dressing helps out a lot. Meatloaf is highly recommended by my nephew who orders it every time he goes!

This place is the ultimate comfort food restaurant. I was so excited to be there the minute I looked over the excellent selection in the menu, that I knew I had to come back several times to try more. I ate here three times over the next four days and was never disappointed. The chicken and waffles was excellent! I highly recommend.

First time back since the pandemic. The menu selections have diminished. Meal preparation used to be excellent. Not now. The shrimp in the Sririacha Shrimp dish were overcooked. The linguini was soupy. My companion had the Three Vegetable dish. The vegetables were not hot. The grits (an old favorite here) tasted like they had been sitting around awhile losing flavor.

As everyone knows the fried egg sandwich and the fries are to die for. Riley(our server) was very friendly and funny. Thank you Riley! You helped make our visit wonderful!

I had a hankering for Hyde Park's french fries....so we went for dinner here that night. I got the special, fried chicken, with garlic mashed potatoes, fries, buttermilk biscuit with honey butter. The fries were not as good as I remembered, but the chicken is now my fav. Yum. Crunchy skin, moist chicken. I'd have it again in a heartbeat.

Given all the good press about Hyde Park, Westgate location, we tried it last night for its 'famous fried chicken". what a dissapointment. Small portion which tasted ok but nothing special., no breast meat, terrible mashed potatoes. In addition, the restaurant (which looks to be at least the second or third in this location) needs a good redoing - the tables were pealing, sticky and un appealing. A step up from KFC but not a place we would return to for chicken or anything else

Excellent food, all the standards, soup, salads, awesome fries‼️, sandwiches, Chicken fried steak, CLASSIC 🌟 Nice wine selections, reasonably priced, Cozy, relaxed with warm , attentive service. ....did I mention awesome fries‼️

We stopped in to visit family and it was a great place to eat and catch up with family. Not to loud, service was fast and if you leave hungry then it is your on fault.

We've been going to Hyde Park Bar and Grill for years and it never disappoints. The menu is focused on comfort foods. On my most recent visit, I had the pimento cheese as I often do with their special fries. I'm sure that I will return on a subsequent visit to Austin.

A little strange to figure out seating at first but we helped ourselves to a table and then a server came by. Food was good and they had some craft beer and wine. Nice hangout if you're in the Hyde Park neighborhood.

Went between lunch and dinner time w/ a small group of friends and were among a few people there. Friendly and helpful server. Some eclectic dishes on the menu but I went for comfort food instead - meatloaf. The meatloaf was good, but the appetizer stole the show! Honestly, I think I can safely say I had the best onion rings I've ever eaten here. Between the crunchy batter and the sauce that they bring for them ... I don't think these onion rings can be beat!

This used to be one of our absolute favorite places for dinner. Although the atmosphere was about the same, the food and service have not maintained. Fries are the highlight but the burger was marginal. Overload of onions doesn't count as proper seasoning. The server was a little uninterested and wanted to be done for the evening. I hope Hyde Park rebounds.

We eat here at least twice a month. Excellent soups and salads, sandwiches, and fries. Highly recommended!

I had not been here in a decade or so, so gave it a visit. We went on a Saturday evening and were seated immediately. Used to be a line out the door, but after over 40 years in business it is not the hot new place anymore. My companion enjoyed her three sides veggie plate, and my chicken sandwich along with their famous fries was tasty. They have a very good happy hour (full bar) and the setting in an old converted house is cool and comfy. Service was on point and friendly. Free parking in the lot behind or on the street.

I go here at least six times a year, and the variety of the menu provides for a group of different tastes. On Monday and Tuesday, the fried chicken is offered, and it is done like any Southerner would cook chicken. Delicious!

An otherwise stalwart establishment, I can't understand why the burger isn't better. I keep hoping I'm just getting a subpar batch of cows or something, but the last time I got the burger it seemed fried--which isn't the worst thing in the world, but seems odd for a grill. The fries make everything mostly better. Gravy and cheese on the fries makes everything categorically better.

Delicious, no nonsense upscale grill food. Warm friendly service and reasonable price point. And the location in Austin is perfect to see other sites, centrally located in Hyde Park.

This was a perfect restaurant to meet with friends and visit. The service was perfect (not too much and not too little....just right). The wine list / drink options had great choices and is something you don't always see in a Texas restaurant. I had a classic Sidecar to start and it was perfect: down to the sugar rim. The food was excellent. I love that the food choices are unique and lean towards Texas flavors. I really enjoyed the Avocado Fries with the cilantro/lime dip. So popular it was used throughout the meal. My appetite was not big so I chose the Steak Mixed Green Salad as my main course and the meat was perfectly cooked and very tender. The lettuce was fresh mixed greens. Large portioins for all the food items. The chocolate cake for desert was so good I finished the entire thing even though I was completely full.

Relaxed atmosphere, very good service, generous portions and tasty comfort food. Forget the calories, dishes are so delicious and satisfying one can eat guilt free. The fries are a must have!

I visited the Hyde Park Grill in south Austin a couple of years ago, and was not impressed, so I was reluctant to give the one in Hyde Park a try, but on a Saturday night, with no reservations elsewhere, we decided to take a chance. We were thrilled to get seated pretty quickly, and noticed right off that the atmosphere was much nicer than the one down south. Our service was great - not overbearing - just perfect - and she was able to recommend a perfect wine to accompany my food. I got the roasted chicken - perfect and moist, and a side of cornbread which was warm and delicious. We didn't have room for dessert but, since we are planning to go back, we will definitely try it next time.

Hyde Park Bar and Grill has been my "go to" restaurant for a relaxed and nicer than average dining experience. The food is consistently very good, especially the Hyde Park Fries. I am not a big french fry enthusiast, but seriously these are yummy. I love the Asian chicken salad and my husband likes the chicken fried steak or chicken salad sandwich. We also enjoy their vodka martinis. Definitely worth trying out.

Walk here from our B&B down the street, loved that! the food was so good! I had the Yankee Crab Cakes which were really good, they were served over collard greens with a sweet remoulade, a very nice combination. My husband had the chicken fried steak and also really enjoyed his meal. Great find on our trip to Austin

I've eaten at the Westgate location several times and never had an issue, but this was my first time at the Duval location. We met here for my brother-in-law's birthday dinner. The food was average, but everyone commented on how rude and inattentive our waiter was for the entire meal. When asked questions about one of the salad dressings, he was rude, and most of us ran out of water or other beverages before he bothered to show up and refill anything. It would have been understandable, to a point, had he been noticeably busy, but we only saw him working our table for nearly most of the time we were there. I've had very good food and service at the south location, so I'm going to chalk this up to being a bad night, but not a bad restaurant. Will try them again, I suppose, but no time soon.

When I travel I rarely eat lunch in centrally located, easy-to-get-to neighborhoods, especially those clustered around hotels and touristy places. I try to find cozy neighborhood spots where locals like to eat. I’m perpetually in search of soul-satisfying meat loaf. Hyde Park has it, complete with real mashed potatoes and your choice of a side vegetable. I always go with collard greens — but you can also have broccoli, mac’n’cheese, green beans. This is homestyle comfort food, Texas style. Don’t eat meat? Tuck into fried or baked chicken. Would you rather have that Southern fave, catfish? Go for it, unless you’re a stickler for salmon. Don’t eat fish or poultry? Go for the fettucine with fried capers or the cauliflower steak with lentils. Vegan or gluten-free? Call a day in advance and let the kitchen know. At HPG you won’t find tourists unless they are visiting local residents. If you don’t go crazy on appetizers, house-made soups, salads or sides, you might have room for one of their six desserts. Take home what you cat eat; you’ll want it later. Service is friendly and unobtrusive. Finally, you’ll want to walk off the meal, so after lunch, walk next door and check out Antonelli’s Cheese Shop, then walk around the corner to Quack’s bakery and pick up blueberry muffins for the next day’s breakfast. You probably won’t want to eat again until the next day after lunch at HPB&G!

Arrived without reservation by myself. I was literally led to a table by s hostess carrying dirty glasses on each finger..in a grab hold. Am I invisible? Served mediocre food pretty promptly, then afterwards..finally my wine. That was it on the server. No offer of dessert or coffee. People around me have been served, dinner, dessert, check..and have now left the restaurant. Food is so-so; service poor. Neighborhood restaurant so I’m guessing it will endure. I however won’t be back. So many amazing FB places to eat in Austin. Convenience isn’t a good excuse.

I am not sure who Tony is, but his southern style Monday night special fried chicken was delicious. Most health conscious eaters would balk at this dish, but on a cold rainy night on a business trip, eating fried chicken at the bar, with fresh green beans and creamy mashed potatoes was perfect! The bar recommended a excellent red blend which topped it all off. If only I had room for dessert!

Met some freinds for dinner and was pleasently surprised, the staff, food and pricing were all great, the restuarant was cozy! We all will go back!

This is the go-to place for good food, well cooked, well served, in a central location, with modest prices and parking. It's not the Ritz but that's why it's so wonderful: it will not disappoint! Unless you're really starving, don't order lots of courses, since they're all generous. Beer and wine make it a place you could go any day, any time. (My friend and I split a burger since they're so big. And delicious.)

Whenever I'm in Austin, whether for business or pleasure, I make a point to come here. Today I tried their veggie burger, and it was awesome. The service is always great as well. Great variety of menu items for all palettes!

Took my girlfriend to this restaurant for dinner here since it was close to where we were staying. Everything was fresh - my meatloaf and her salmon were very good. Our waitress provided exceptional service.

Went here for lunch with a group while in town for business. Great appetizers to start with queso/chips and fried artichoke hearts. Two of us got the "horseshoe" which is chopped steak with queso and fries piled on top and it was really good. Someone else got grilled chicken and mashed potatoes. Looked really good. Someone else got a burger. You have to try the double dipped fries. They are incredible. Unique peach dessert too. I like the original location on Duval. Great area!

An Austin-institution. I shared a chicken fried steak with a friend, which was good. The restaurant has long been a favorite of mine.

Loved this place. We sat outside on the patio with a great breeze. Prompt and friendly service. We shared the grilled fish tacos and the best grilled chicken Asian salad I've ever had. The salad had chicken, peanuts, mandarin oranges to name a few things, and a great peanut ginger dressing we still get cravings for. We'll be back!

Wow, best chicken fried steak ever! And the collard greens, yummy. Can't wait to get to Austin again and try more menu items. Be sure to ask for Martin (pronounced Marteen), he's a great server.

If you are in Austin, don't miss eating at Hyde Park Bar and Grill. It is always fresh, very consistent in quality and has some killer French fries and dipping sauce. Try them as an appetizer before you take a long walk around Town Lake to then work it off. They are worth the splurge!!

Great weekend food and $3 Bloody Marys, Mimosas, etc. made it even more special and memorable. The eggs benedict were excellent in every aspect, and the omelets were nicely prepared. Try the mushroom and cheese omelet and have them add diced canadian bacon. Fantastic! Oh, the service? Exemplary!

Good service but the food for the most part was ordinary. The one exception was fried chicken with mashed potatoes which was excellent. Not flashy but O.K.

Hadn't been to Hyde Park Bar & Grill in years and only to the Duval location, which used to be reliably good. Went to the south location recently for the first time. Ambience is like a retirement home and the food was comparable. On the positive side, our waiter was attentive and friendly. Definitley do not recommend this location. Sad to experience such a decline.

And I've never been to a restaurant that is so Corkie and awesome my pancakes were fantastic and I can't believe I can add extras to them not just syrup or butter to my pancakes here...I give it a five stars and I would come back to this again.

Used to love this place, nice little old house in Hyde Park, had great food. Ate there Sunday; my friend was served moldy tamales, and waitress didn't even replace them, just took them away! I was served day-old cornbread. Skip it, too many other good places around.

Great food, great prices, great service and great atmosphere. This is a neighborhood gem. The menu is varied, with a full bar. There is art everywhere on the walls. Our waitress was exceptional and witty. We had NY Strip, Pastrami Reuben, Potato crusted Tilapia, and Sautéed Catfish. It was all delicious. The pastrami Reuben had a magnificent sauce with it. The tartar sauce with the Tilapia was also outstanding ( I normally do not like tartar sauce. The French fries also had an amazing dipping sauce. Also amazing were the baked sweet potato ( with brown sugar butter), the green beans, mashed potatoes, and Mac and cheese. All the sides were fresh and delicious. We shall return!

A nice middle of the road restaurant with consistent quality and service. A large and interesting menu offers almost anyone something for lunch or dinner that will be enjoyed and will not break the individual's diet.

With so many excellent "mid range " restaurants in Austin, I don't visit Hyde Park Bar & Grill as much as I'd like to.... but I really recommend it to get the "flavor" of Austin... not just the very good food here, but also enjoying the Hyde Park neighborhood where this long-time dining landmark is ensconced. Main drawback is the parking... not very much of it, so you can't count on parking right in front. But there are spaces on the street or at other local places... and it's worth a short walk, for sure. It's so relaxing, and great for couples or friends or Solo diners.

The service was awful and the manger made every excuse as why it was awful and he blamed all of the patrons ... All of them.. For being too picky! What a horrible experience... Don't waste your time or m0ney here! awful at best!!

Traveling on a West Coast time schedule, a 10:00 pm dinner can be hard to find. Hyde Park Grill is ready to serve a delicious selection of entrees. I had the steak and shrimp which was on the special menu; also tried the Shiner Draft which was an excellent beer. The salmon and Bridlewood Cabernet wine was also quite good. Our waiter, Conner, was great at explaining the Texas-type food because it was a different culture. The food was excellent, even the side orders which had bacon braised collards...wonderful recommendation. The green beans are quite excellent sides with the meal.

What a great find for a long-time Austin food lover. This little spot is located in a classic neighborhood near to UT, close to the highway and feels very special. While you might feel a little out of place in shorts or jeans, don't let that keep you away. The food and the feeling are just right - it's a great spot you should not miss.

We picked this place to eat because it was next to a cheese shop we were going to. The food was superb. We had two different kinds of omelettes, but my husband added bacon and ham to his, and the kitchen had no problem with the changes. I had a wonderful mushroom and three cheese with a side order of bacon. All plates also came with home style potatoes. For the brunch they also had $3 drinks, such as Bloody Marys, Mimosas, and a couple of others. We liked the ambiance: the decor balanced tasteful design with a casual feel. The entrees were priced around $9 - $10 each, which is not bad for the Austin Area. Other than Brunch, a full menu with many selections was available. If you are looking for a good Brunch, this little spot is perfect!

An upscale diner and vintage bar all rolled up into one. If you are there when it's not too crowded, it's a wonderful atmosphere! The menu is varied and delicious. The fried green beans or fried artichokes are my favorite appetizer - the sauces are made in-house. I have been there several times and haven't had a bad thing yet. My favorites are the Asian chicken salad (with peanuts and a dressing to die for!), and the roasted chicken with the creamiest comforting mashed potatoes. The pastrami sandwich is like from New York. They also have some delectable desserts and vintage cocktails. If I lived closer, I might have to go every day!

Hyde Park is an interesting older neighborhood, a student-and-hipster haven offering a number of interesting dining opportunities. Hyde Park Bar and Grill has been holding forth in a remodeled old house since the early 80s, and can easily be found by looking for a twenty-foot-tall fork out front with a giant chicken (or is it a turkey?) impaled at the top. We stopped in for a late lunch on a busy Sunday -- the place is very popular -- yet were seated within ten minutes. The crowd is young, diverse, and lively; on Sundays, an excellent brunch runs until 3PM, so we were in luck. That brunch features $3 mimosas, bloody marys, and other delights, along with typical brunchly fare and the full regular menu. Madame opted for pecan pancakes -- highly recommended -- bacon, toast, and eggs, which can be had on a big platter or, as she had them, more selectively a la carte. My chicken guacamole BLT, on a brioche bun, was terrific, and was accompanied by a fine remoulade and the Grill's justifiably famous fries. Generally I don't care for coated fries, but those were terrific, and the sandwich had taste combinations that made it something special. Service was skilled, fairly fast (given the crowd), and friendly, and the overall atmosphere was laid-back and gemutlich. Noise levels, even though many were enjoying those $3 drinks, were downright reasonable. We hope (as recent arrivals in the Austin area) to become regulars, and I suspect Sundays will be the day of choice; the reasons why Hyde Park is popular are many and obvious.

We ate lunch there last weekend. The food is very good as is the service. My wife and I had the chicken fried steak served with fries which were really good. Our friends had salad and sandwich which they said were very good. It is located in a quiet older section of north Austin in an old converted house. Nice basic atmosphere.

Coffee was hot, flavor was not! Interesting sharing the bar with the entire staff.....appropriate dress (sleeved shirts for males) would go a long way.

Only 30 minute wait on Thanksgiving day, impressive, Food and service were great. In and out in 1.5 hours.

We had chicken fried steak here that was very tasty, though a tad over-browned. We came here very near closing time on a Monday night, and were enthusiastically met by the manager and shown to a secluded table in the front that was perfect for us to chat. Following my friends recommendation, i tried the Hyde Park Fries, battered french fries, and they were worth the calories. This coming from someone who can take or leave a fry - get them! The cocktails from the bar were good. I enjoyed the visit and would return.

This once mighty institution has slid into sub-mediocrity in recent years. CFC was extremely salty, meatloaf really overdone, sour mashed potatoes, basically Luby's quality in a better atmosphere with higher prices.

Had dinner here on Wednesday night. I have eaten here many times over the years so I would offer that they are consistent with their menu and preparation of all the items on the menu. I did find that they probably give you too much in a serving as my wife couldn’t finish her chicken salad. The food was very good as usual as was the service. I had greens beans as a side which I didn’t enjoy because they weren’t cooked enough for my liking. All in all everyone at our table seem to enjoy their meal.

We are fairly regular customers of this restaurant, since it's really close to home and always has good food. We visited yesterday evening; it was the first time we'd been there during their happy hour...which runs from 3-6 pm. During happy hour, draft beer (there are 3 varieties) is a few dollars off and there are other drink specials. There are also miniplates of food for $5. We ordered chips and queso to start, along with our drinks. The chips were OK...nothing special...but the queso was somewhat unique in that it had a dollop of tomatillo sauce, a bit of guacamole and some black beans on top. It was exactly what we needed to start. There are daily specials. Last night's was a buttermilk fried chicken and a blackened swordfish on a bed of okra and grilled watermelon. For entrees, my husband and I frequently get the chicken fried chicken, which comes with white gravy and buttermilk mashed potatoes...plus one other side. I chose the collard greens sauteed with bacon; my husband got grilled broccoli. For some reason, last night's mashed potatoes were the best in recent memory. The slightly sour taste of buttermilk was just right. The chicken breast was nicely breaded and crunchy, as always...and the portion was a more than enough given we'd ordered an appetizer. I took nearly half my dinner home for today's lunch. It reheated nicely. On previous occasions, we've had the buttermilk battered fries...which are wonderful. I've also had crabcakes, chicken fried steak and a few other dishes. There's a pretty good variety of fish, meat and chicken, as well as burgers and sandwiches. I don't recall ever having a bad meal at this restaurant. In summary, Hyde Park offers a wide variety of tasty food at reasonable prices. We will definitely be going back.

We stopped in at Hyde Park Grill - central. Usually we go to the south location and wished we had this time as well. Not sure why things were so off compared to expectations. everything cooked in the kitchen was completely overdone. My lunch partners ate only half their burgers and they are burger people. My reuben - the meat was cooked until dry and the bread was soggy. The tea was fine, but that was not why we came. Seems like this was a tired kitchen team with not the best ingredients that day - sure hope it gets better fast! Will stay with the south location as usual.

Best fries ever, get extra Hyde Park sauce too. But there's more to the place than the best fries in town. Have never made a bad choice here, from veggie burgers and homemade pimento cheese and cucumber sandwhiches to regular burgers and daily specials, it's all good. But get a big plate of fries, really, don't go there without trying the fries, dipped in buttermilk and rolled in seasoned flour before they're fried and served with Hyde Park sauce.

Fresh food and price is reasonable. Don't leave without desserts. They will blow you away. Wait staff were pleasant and very helpful when asked for help making a selection. they are known for their Hyde Part Fries. Tried them, loved them.

Best chicken fried steak for miles!! Jalapeño cornbread super yummy too. Buttermilk french fries a must as well. Located in a quaint part of the city in an old home. Just look for the big fork!

Hot bacon salad dressing is legit! Place is a great brunch spot. Very friendly staff. Lots of glutin free options if ur into that

Heard so much about their fries that I had to try them along with their battered green beans. Both were very tasty. Blackened fish tacos were very good. Good draft selection. Wait staff was a little slow but no real complaints.

Had lunch today with a vendor, service was ahhhhhh okay although the waitress forgot my vendor asked for cheddar on her burger, then said she didnt ask for it, took it back and brought her a burger with american cheese. Other than that the food was really good I suggest the pork shoulder mac n cheese.

I had a terrible experience last night at my neighborhood favorite. The manager was rude upon entering to us and several guests. He proceeded to act flustered the entire night and was unpleasant, constantly telling patrons they were “short staffed”. The wait time was an hour for food. Others around us who came later were served sooner. Waiter was not as attentive as could have been. Food was ok - I’d have happily gone home if we’d not been dining to meet out of state friends who love this place. Some months back our neighbors even said this place was terrible and I argued otherwise. I think her experience plus mine cancels it’s past life before Covid-19 ran its prices way up and quality/services out.
good for bites and beer
food is pretty good and the beer selection is great, Nothing really special, but the quality is fine and the prices are reasonable
