Quality food at a reasonable price! Great service and a very nice atmosphere. Truly a treat! I had the potato encrusted salmon, per our waiter's suggestion and it was amazing! My husband had the swordfish, which was so moist it melted in your mouth.

Being in San Francisco we felt we had to sample local seafood. This restaurant was recommended by our concierge and what a good choice that was. The welcome was good, the choice of food was excellent (I had snapper, my wife had Swordfish, both of which were excellent) altogether a very nice meal at a very reasonable price

We've becoming coming here for years (both business and pleasure dinners) and have never been disappointed. Great value on the early bird oyster special and discounted drink prices. The seafood is always fresh, well-prepared and service is efficient. I've recommended the restaurant to friends and relatives and they have concurred with my recommendation.

Very good bisque, delicious sole and tasty trout. Roast potatoes with sour cream and al dente veges were a good accompaniment. I thought my Cosmo tasted a bit strange. Diner alongside me said that's probably because it's made with Korean wine! I stopped drinking it then. He added that they are not allowed to serve spirits at that point on the hill?! I don't know if this is true but if it is perhaps they should remove cocktails from the menu, as it is misleading to suggest they are serving cocktails made with spirits if they are not. My companion says the draft beer was good. I am only giving it a 3 because of the cocktail situation.

I just had a great meal at the Hyde Street Seafood House. I ordered the seared scallops in a cream ginger and avocado sauce. They were the best scallops I have ever eaten. This restaurant is a great treasure off the beaten tourist track.

Oysters were great. Sole was not fresh. No excuse for not having fresh fish in San Francisco cxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

We were nice greeted and seated quickly on a Monday evening. The wait staff was attentive. We both ordered fish (salmon and sea bass) dinners cooked in paper with julienne vegetables and potatoes. Both meals were good and plentiful. We were too full to have dessert. The prices were reasonable for San Francisco. Additionally, we liked the restaurant because it was not a chain and had unique decor.

We dined here this evening and had a very good meal. We began with a house salad of mixed greens w/vinaigrette dressing. I had a Mahi-Mahi En Papillote that was very tastey. My brother had one of the specials which he very much enjoyed. I have a feeling that one of the wait staff must have called off as service was very slow and we had to ask repeatedly for refills on our water. I am glad we had reservations, when we arrived there were several tables available, but when we left, the wait was 40 minutes.

Had a great dinner here last week. recommendation from Wayne at the Inn at Union Square. Nice location on the Hyde street cable car line. Try the Lobster Bisque...to die for.

Excellent seafood preparations and good service. The restaurant is fairly small and intimate.

A friend was in town for the evening so we selected this restaurant due to proximity to the hotel and the family style to the restaurant. We met at the restaurant, which was not crowded on a Sunday evening. We were quickly seated in a table by the window. The pace was typical for an American restaurant - probably faster than one would like for a casual dinner with conversation. This might have been affected by us being the last ones seated for the evening. I had a salad and the potato crusted salmon while my associate tried the soup of the day and a sampling of the oysters. The seafood was fresh and tasty but the presentation was only average. Overall a good choice in a nice neighborhood for the price but if you want a fine dining experience you will need to go elsewhere.

My party of 3 visited this restaurant on Oct 7 to celebrate a birthday during our visit to SF. I have to say that we were extremely happy with our restaurant selection. As you know SF has an abundance of restaurants to choose from. Hyde Street Seafood has a simple classic feel to itself. The food was fantastic and the service was even better. Our server even recommended not to order some dishes. All in all everyone in my party was very pleased.

Tried Hyde Street out after seeing the 4 star rating on Yelp and reading a few reviews. Def has the locals vibe and is not in a touristy part of town. The server was very nice; he may even have been the manager. Bread was great. Caesar was ok. The clams menuiere were too fishy and had a strong ammonia smell. My hubby had the halibut special cooked in the parchment. Fish was cooked just fine but the other items on his dish were lacking in any flavor. I ordered the pepper ahi and it was cooked to medium rare which was great - I did ask if I could have it rare and was told that the chef doesn't like to be told to cook to a different temp, he doesn't like to change things. So ok - we went with medium rare. There was way more garlic than pepper and it was tough to finish it without picking off the pepper and garlic coating. Overall it was not an unpleasant but a bit out of the way to come just for the restaurant. My kids were still hungry so they ordered chinese food from the hole in the wall across the street, U Lee, and I have to say that was awesome!!

As we all know the most highly trafficked tourist areas are not the best places to get the highest quality or best values on anything, especially dining options. Hyde Street Seafood is just far enough removed from the Wharf to have a more intimate and "local" type of atmosphere, while at the same time providing an excellent value and quality dining experience. It is right on the Powell & Hyde cable car line, so it's very easy to find and get back to wherever you might be staying. Their menu is not huge, but everything we had was excellent, especially the lobster bisque and the chippino (sp.) Their prices are 10-20% lower than those we saw around the Wharf area with ample while not obscene portions, and they have awesome happy hour (5-7pm) pricing on beers at $2.50/pt. and a dozen oysters for $12. Tell me that won't make a person happy.

My husband and I celebrated my birthday in San Francisco and originally planned to go to Zarzuela's. However, the restaurant was closed on Sunday! As a result, we ended up at Hyde Street Seafood House based on the taxi driver's suggestion. What a wonderful opportunity. We were received warmly despite no reservation, got a cute booth right by the window which was very private and romantic. The location is fantastic and in a cute residential area, the cable car passes by every fifteen minutes or so and taxis are ample in the area as well. The menu has a good variety of seafood dishes as well as a great wine menu. We had the seafood sampler for appetizers and it was delicious! A nice variety of smoked salmon with capers and cream cheese, jumbo shrimp, oysters and scallops. The servers were friendly and attentive and overall the prices were very reasonable. We both ate for approximately $80 which included alcoholic beverages, appetizers, two main entrees and dessert (the crème brulee rocks!). We will definitely return.

We went back again with my family and some friends. As always, the food was fantastic. Several of us order the fish in paper. My son ordered the seafood salad appetizer for his meal. It was just the right size and he loved it. My 7 year old son is helping me write this review. My 5 year old daughter devoured my entire cup of clam chowder...I did get one taste though and it was fresh and amazing. For dessert we had our favorite...Banana Bread Pudding and also Ice Cream with Chocolate Chip Cookies. Both were great. We always return to this restaurant whenever visiting San Francisco. It's not touristy......we loved it.

We had a fabulous meal here with great service and prices that can't be beat. Get the the entrees in the parchment paper as they really know what they are doing!

This restaurant was recommended by the concierge, not a real great standout place I'd say. The oysters were good and clean from Washington. They were tiny though. We were seated promptly. With so many restaurants in San Francisco I'm sure there are better ones by asking others or doing more Trip Advisors homework.....which I should of done. I had the prawns, just nothing special. My daughter had the lobster ravioli which was pretty good! I would seek out a better place when in San Francisco

Preparations were excellent! Very good quality food at a reasonable price. Quaint, old school, nautical themed with two nice sized bars if you arrive early and just want to grab a drink. In the Nob Hill neighborhood out of the touristy areas. Must try their specialty of parchment baked fish and the oysters were very fresh. Will go back!

We had a meal here to celebrate our Anniversary, as it had been recommended by the hotel manager, and he wasn't wrong! The food was cooked to perfection and the fish was really fresh. As if this wasn't enough the bill was very reasonable considering we had 3 courses with a bottle of wine. The restaurant is a little hard to find but well worth it.

We had a very pleasant dinner there in late September 2008, on our vacation to the San Francisco area. It's one of SFO's many neighborhood restaurants, located in a very nice residential area near Russian Hill, right on the Powell & Hyde cable car line. We had a table right by the window and were able to watch those neat little cars go by every 10 minutes or so. I had made an advance reservation for 6:00pm on a Tuesday, based on the "reservations recommended" that I had read somewhere -- but we really didn't need it. We were the second party there that evening and it never did fill up completely -- even though it is a small restaurant. Both of us had the Potato Encrusted King Salmon, and it was very good -- and so was the service. The food, the service, the ambience -- it was all very good (but perhaps just a tad short of overwhelmingly excellent). I'm glad we went there for a quiet dinner away from the Fisherman's Wharf, and I would certainly recommend it to others looking for the same.

We dined here on our last night in San Francisco and we were delighted. It wasn't what we expected in that we thought it would be one of these slick chain-like restaurants, a bustling place with servers versing a well-practiced generic script, etc, and actually it was much more interesting with it's own unique character and it surprised us in a very good way. I'm assuming it is a family run restaurant, it certainly feels that way and other reviewers have said as much. It is very personal, we didn't feel like just another cover. The lovely lady who was our host and I imagine perhaps an owner was very welcoming and personal, she really made us feel special and that's quite rare these days where restaurants are trying to turn over tables quickly and maximise spend etc. This was the best restaurant of our trip because of the relaxed and personal feel. In terms of decor, again it wasn't what we expected, it seems the interior hasn't had a makeover for a very long time and that's a great thing because it is absolutely charming. Old maps cover the walls accompanied by various other, perhaps slightly kitsch, items as decor. Its a lot smaller than we expected and that adds even more to the charm. And the food was spectacular. The lobster bisque appetizer was delicious, my wife had an oyster selection of 3 different oyster types which was interesting and delicious, our mains of fish were fantastic too accompanied by standard vegetable accompanimentd such as carrots. Home-style cooking which we thoroughly enjoyed and we'll be straight back there next time we visit San Francisco.

We ate here our first night in San Francisco. I chose this restaurant based on trip advisor ratings for seafood restaurants fairly close to our hotel in Union Square. To be fair we dined during the heat wave and there was no ac. We ordered the oyster platter on the happy hour menu. It consisted of a variety of oysters from different locations. I only cared for the local oysters so many went uneaten. The dinner tasted good. I ordered a small lobster tail and a salad. Prices were fair and decor was great! I preferred the restaurants at Fishermans Wharf.

It was suggested we find our way to this neighbourhood restaurant for the Lobster Bisque. I am so glad we did! We chose to walk here from our hotel in Union Square. By the time we arrived on a beautiful warm Friday night, we were ready to discover what the terrific reviews were all about. All 3 in our party HAD to try the lobster bisque. We were thrilled with the taste. It was filled with pieces of lobster! Definitely worth the walk over!. I had the seafood linguini special. Again, it was loaded with scallops, shrimp and crab. My friends had the crab cakes and a prawn dish. They too were happy with their choices. The restaurant was fairly busy. Our server was pleasant. Service was a little spotty towards the end of our meal. I would return to this off the beaten track restaurant. We had a window table and enjoyed watching people wander by!

We stumbled across this place after passing on the Cable Car. Great food, excellent service, and very, very reasonable prices. They also have a happy hour where imported draft beer is only $2.50. After some terrible experiences at other establishments, Hyde Street Seafood was like a breath of fresh air. We ate there twice during our most recent stay.

I had so many high hopes for this place since it's located in such a beautiful part of the city. But sadly, it is a Tourist Trap. Ordered the New Zealand Blue Nose Seabass with jalapenos & tomatoes ''En Papillote" and it was bland; portion size was small. Wine selection was subpar. Can't complain about the service for a Saturday night though. They even called us a cab.

Have you ever "known" that you ordered a certain dish at a certain restaurant only to be told it was no longer on the menu? My wife and I are most certain that this restaurant offered a lobster bisque pot pie when we visited there three years ago. When we mentioned that it was not on the menu it was "deer in the headlights" and the comment that they never served that dish, much to my wife's dismay. She ordered crab mornay, the closest she could get to the pot pie she had waited three years to enjoy again . It was very good. I ordered the grilled swordfish and it was cooked to perfection. All in all it was a very enjoyable dining experience. We will definitely visit this place on our next visit to San Francisco.

This is the second time we have been here. The oysters at happy hour are a great value. The fish in parchment was very good If you like oysters don't miss this place

Visitors to San Francisco from London, we went to this restaurant for dinner on the recommendation of a friend, backed by a lot of others on websites. Our tastebuds must differ from theirs. The oysters we had as starters, cheaper than what we get in expensive London, but also a lot smaller, were fine. The cooked food was another story. I had red snapper and vegetables in papillotte, a speciality of the place which I thought would, as a local fish, be a good thing to try Sadly, neither the fish nor the vegetables, though not overcooked, turned out to have any taste, which is quite a feat. I had the sense this was a place where dishes had been inherited from previous chefs and owners by people who just didn’t understand them. The place was welcoming and atmospheric, with plenty of room and good and not too loud jazz in the background, and the service very nice, but I thought the front-of-house people needed to get chefs who brought the cooking up to their standard.

Once again TA guided my wife and me to a great restaurant. This is a small neighborhood restaurant with excellent food and service. The raw oysters and crab cakes were excellent as were our entrées. The stuffed shrimp and ciapinno were also outstanding. We would absolutely return on another visit to San Francisco.

As simple as this: we were looking for a great seafood place that wasn't super expensive. The Hyde Street Seafood House was recommended to us by a local and we were not disappointed. The food was excellent, service was great, and we would definitely return when we visit the City.

Hyde Street is by far my favorite seafood place in town. This section of Hyde street, Nob Hill/Russian Hill is tree lined with twinkling lights in the trees, and the famous San Francisco Cable Cars cruising by. It's mostly locals so don't look for tourists, they're on the cable car. I love happy hour, $1 oysters and $2.50 Spaaten. The lobster bisque is to die for, and the catch of the day is cooked in parchment with veggies. You can enjoy, baked, stuffed, fried, raw, fish plus pasta, and yummy deserts.

I found this place by searching for happy hour and oysters on Google. Monday - Thursday this place has a dozen oysters for $14 and $3.00 beers and since I was in San Francisco, I wanted to take advantage of fresh, local seafood. This place did not disappoint. The service was great. We were seated in a romantic, little booth in the front window, which offered prime people watching. We each ordered a dozen oysters and sampled three different kinds of oysters, two of which were from British Columbia and the other from Washington. Everything was great and was wonderful with a cold, fresh Anchor Steam.

We were referred by the Concierge of our hotel to this restaurant. There were four of us visiting from Texas . We were excited about enjoying the dungeness crab at this small local restaurant. We sat at the bar while waiting for our table. The bartender was very friendly and had a great sense of humor. We were seated and then ordered an appetizer to share. It was tasty but what we thought to be overpriced for what we received. We ordered and then were told they did not have the crab. We all had to make another selection. This was disappointing because we were leaving the following day and did not have the opportunity to enjoy the crab for which the area is known for. We made new selections and were then waiting. We saw someone come in who appeared to be the owner. So we asked him if he was and he sarcastically answered that he was a bus boy, which we knew he was not! A bit later we drew him back over to the table and expressed our disappointment about them not having the crab. He answered that we should go back to Texas and have barbeque!! He wasn't joking. If our food wasn't ready to be delivered at any minute we would have left! It's apparent that he doesn't give a flip about tourists and is surviving on the locals to keep afloat. His arrogance and flippant attitude would be enough for us not to go there again even if it were the only place around. Also, the food was good but not exceptional at all.

We had oyster and shrimp cocktail for appetizers and we had 4 different main courses. All were great. I gade the sord fish that was great.

...and that's a lot for me to admit since I don't even prefer west coast oysters, being from New England. But these were exceptional. Plus for Happy Hour (5-7) they are even cheap to boot. And, thank goodness, they come with both cocktail sauce/horseradish as well as the - I can't understand the point - mignonette. The bartender doubling as our waiter also did a good job with making a tart Margarita as requested, as well as getting drinks and wine to us in a timely fashion. I can't say quite the same for the kitchen which seemed slow for an early hour, though admittedly a Saturday. The snapper en papillote had delicious vegetables and broth, but, as is often the case in this dish, the fish was overcooked. The sole meuniere was excellent. On balance, a nice meal that didn't break the bank.

A cab ride away from the convention center area. The lobster bisque and key lime pie were really good but the special fish entree of the evening (yellow tail) was a bit too fishy. The staff was nice and attentive (even running across the street at break neck speed to hail a cab). The restaurant is small enough to have a quain feeling that was nice after a few days of crowds closer to the touristy areas.

The restaurant was empty. There was only 2 two tops including us at prime time. Freezing cold, elevator music. Clearly not renovated in 30 years.

Went for an early dinner last night and had extremely fresh raw oysters, fish in parchment and a seafood combo that was one of the best dishes I've ever had. The server, Danny, was great also. The prices are quite reasonable for what you get.

Thank you for all who recommended this restaurant. We stopped by here on St. Patrick's Day in the evening at 7 p.m. We took the trolley from Van Ness and California and transferred at Powell on the Powell and Hyde trolley which dropped us right off at the front door of this restaurant. We arrived a few minutes early and enjoyed a cocktail at the bar while they prepared a table right next to the window. It was a perfect location and we watched the trolleys go by during the evening as we dined. It was an excellent night to go as the restaurant was not busy. i assumed everyone was out celebrating St. Patrick's Day at their favorite local Irish Bar. I ordered a dozen oysters which they had on special for happy hour. Three different types of oysters for $12. Every oyster was plump and flavorful. My wife enjoyed the lobster bisque which she said was fantastic. I ordered the salmon which was encrusted in potatoes with a pinot noir reduction sauce with roasted potatoes and fresh vegetables. it was excellent and the salmon was done perfectly. My wife ordered a whole dungeness crab. This was her first time tackling one of these so with my help she enjoyed every bite and it was done perfectly steamed in garlic. For dessert, my wife ordered the creme brulee which she loves but I think I made out the best when I saw the steaming, bubbling hot banana bread pudding arrive at the table. This is a dessert you cannot miss. Overall, it was a lovely evening in a nice quiet restaurant and the service was excellent as they were very attentive all evening. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who would like a quaint little restaurant away from the tourist crowds down at the Wharf. Bon Apetit!

Lovely spot and nice welcome. Sautéed baby calamari to start. Halibut en papillot main. Strawberries and cream. All delicious and fresh.

Food was horrible and female Manager customer service was a joke. I paid for 5 dried terrible shimps. That tasted old and I was charged $28.00. If you don't want to waste your money and time don't come here. It was my first time and it will be my last time. Hyde Street seafood served me old shrimp that was dry. They also charged me $28 for the nasty old shrimps what a joke. I paid but I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Unless you wanna be sick. I told the Manager she act like she could not understand nothing but money . She act like she could not comprehend to what I was telling her. So I am telling people be careful. This restaurant is greedy and served me bad seafood shrimps. Never will go back and will tell everyone about the poor service.

My wife and I discovered Hyde Street Seafood House about seven years ago and always include in in our list of restaurants when we are in San Francisco. We discovered this wonderful restaurant while riding the Powell/ Hyde cable car. It is on Hyde just below Jackson which is a cable car stop so we always take the cable car to and from the restaurant. We have eaten there at least five times and the food has always been amazing. Many of the fish choices are cooked in parchment which adds to the firm texture and wonderful flavor of the fish. The entrees run from about $13 to about $18 and the selection is broad. The wine list is sufficient and the prices reasonable.

We enjoyed this place. Small, unassuming. Good classic food specializing in en papillotte (in parchment) prep of fish/seafood.

Very tasty fish fillet - I had snapper - with various shredded vegetables and potato, wrapped in parchment paper, then baked in natural juices. With glass of wine and tip $26. Good value. Service was minimalist. I Prefer more. Kitchen was slow. Server said short staffed.

Very happy I went there based on TA reviews. Fish was very fresh and service was excellent! Would go back!

My wife and I just has a lovely dinner at Hyde Park Seafood. We both had seafood dishes that were extremely well prepared. Our server was very good; even offered to call a cab for us. The decor is attractive and most welcoming. Really a neighborhood restaurant but for us, being from out of town, it was a lovely experience.

My husband, brother-in-law, sister-in-law and myself ate here on June 10th. The place is not big so reservations are a must. We were seated when we arrived and the waiter brought water and asked about drinks as soon as we were seated. The choices are good and we all four had something different. We all agreed the food was very good. This is a really good place but probably not for kids. I would recommend it as a place to eat when visiting SF.

Was really looking forward to this restaurant. My table mates (spouse and mother-in-law) had the "specialties of the house" - the parchment wrapped fish; those were excellent. I had the broiled snapper - which was horribly overcooked and rubbery, with a bad corn-starch sauce.

We went there because of all the good opinions we read, however were very disappointed. The restaurant is quite small and cosy from the inside, so if you want to go there, you should make a reservation - however read our review first. The service was very slow and took them very long to get us our drinks and food. We started with oysters which we could not complain about. However then we got our main course, dungeon crab, which costed USD 43. When I started with the crab, I discovered that the meat was of a very bad quality and looked very dried already. It seemed the crab was either laying around for a while or was warmed up - it was just awful. I called the waiter and complaint about my food not being fresh. However he just answered "yes it was fresh" and went away again without even looking at it - no further comment. This reaction showed me that I was right and he did not want to discuss about it, because he knew he was wrong. So I will never go to this place again. Also the whole night after the dinner I had problems with my stomach. This reaction

Unfamiliar with the area, we found this restaurant on Open Table and were excited to find a seafood restaurant near our hotel. This spot is totally embedded in the neighborhood and appeared to bring a blending of culture including an Asian influence on the decorations, seafood and some comfort food thrown in with a twist of Country music! Good sourdough bread starts off the service however bread refills costs $2. We chose to split some Kumamoto oysters, Dungeness crab cakes and a stuffed shrimp entree. Service was good, food was excellent, and even the music was acceptable even though not a favorite style for my dining companion. A return to spot if we end up back in this area.

Small old time seafood restaurant that does seafood well. Most customers were regulars. It is not fancy, but comfy, and has a very nice selection of different types of seafood, prepared well.

We (4) arrived for happy hour and it was great. Oysters were $14 for a dozen. I don't want to say how many oysters we ate. Our meals were delicious and service was great. Can't wait to go back.

I had the opportunity to dine at the Hyde Street Seafood House and Raw bar this week during a business trip. The restaurant is tucked away on Hyde Street in a residential area of the city. The decor is understated but the menu is simple but the flavors are out of this world! I had the Dungeness crab cocktail for an appetizer and the Dungeness crab mornay en crote for my entree and they were both outstanding! I was a little hesitant to order the Dungeness for both courses but the waiter assured me the flavor profiles for each would be slightly different without sacrificing the sweetness of the crab. Boy, was he every right! The prices were reasonable and certainly less expensive than the other parts of the city.

The location and the atmosphere of this restaurant are both very nice. The staff is friendly and gracious. The food, however, is just O.K. and has the occasional aura of cafeteria food. Seasonings and presentation are both severely lacking. It makes me think they just have the wrong chef. A restaurant of this price level should not serve those tumbled Costco type carrots as a cooked vegetable any more than they should serve the frozen vegetable medley with cubed carrots, peas and lima beans that your mother may have made you eat in the 70s. Nor should they serve plain white rice cafeteria style, in a cup shape with no sauce or seasoning. I ordered the pan seared sea scallops in the ginger cream sauce. I think there were three scallops and while they were moist and tender, they were quite small. I couldn't detect any hint of ginger or other flavoring in the sauce, other than cream. Finally, and most seriously, it is irresponsible of the Hyde Street Seafood House to put Escolar on the menu with out a huge warning. Escolar is a fish to be eaten in tiny quantities, not a slab of fish. To do otherwise is to court digestive disaster. The unsuspecting diner may not connect the later events with consumption of the fish, but it is a nasty surprise. There's a reason that Japan and Italy have banned the sale of this fish. Look up Escolar on Wikipedia.

Happened on this place and just loved our whole experience. Three folks were at the bar eating oysters, because it was Oyster Happy Hour (!) $15 for a dozen of three different kinds! Of course we ordered a dozen and they were so fresh!! I remembered them when I smelled sea air on the drive south on hi way 1 :) Anyway, service, ambiance, food all were wonderful. Thanks!!

A little cramped but the food was well worth it! The stuff fish was awesome! Even tried raw clams for the first time!

A very cosy small seafood restaurant with very reasonable prices and high quality food. They have a great selection of fresh seafood including Oysters. It is away from the tourist areas and well worth a visit.

My husband and I ate hear after a local recommended this place. We were visiting San Francisco March 1-4. After being in very touristy areas all day, we wanted something different. The ambiance is quaint and romantic. Our oysters were great, we should have ordered more. My husband said his choppino was good, however my stuffed prawns were just average. There were only four small stuffed prawns, and i was thankful I ordered lobster bisque as an appetizer, or else I would have walked away starving. The side of vegetables with the stuffed prawns were not good, and the flavors seemed out of place with the main dish. The service was slow, so enjoy a glass of wine while you wait. Overall, the experience was decent, if we return we'll stick to oysters and wine.

We were looking for a good seafood restaurant with affordable prices and where nice casual attire was acceptable. This restaurant had great reviews, so we gave it a try. It met all of our expectations.

Walked down to Hyde street from the Fairmont and it was worth the trip. Casual dining in a very relaxed atmosphere and pace. Specialty of the night was Halibut and it was really good. Other dishes of note were the sole, rainbow trout, and seafood Alfredo. No one was disappointed in our group and we traded our complements on the entire walk back to the hotel. We had kids with us (21,16, & 13) and fit right in. Our kids eat most everything so I didn't look to see if they had options for non seafood lovers or picky kids. Definitely a thumbs up.

A raw bar that served luke warm oysters and clams scares me half to death. Entrees were just ok. I cancelled my reservation at a proven San Francisco seafood restaurant for disappointment. Prior reviews seem better than my experience so this may have been an isolated incident.

I used to love this restaurant especially the fish cooked En Papillotte. Went in for a casual dinner last night and tried the lobster bisque (decent but too creamy for my taste) and the Blue Nosed Sea Bass (cooked en Papillotte). However, the flavors that I remember from my prior visits was sorely lacking. everything came across as bland even though the jalapenos and tomatoes were supposed steamed with the fish. Didnt spend a lot of money so wasn't terribly disappointed but I am sad that I have lost another neighborhood gem. Service was very attentive, corkage is reasonable at $15, just hope the cooking improves.

I made a reservation at Hyde Street based on the reviews. I had the steamed clams and my husband had the new england clam chowder for starters. I wasn't impressed with either. For dinner I had the swordfish and my husband had the stuffed prawns. Both were flavorful. The restaurant is simple and small. Staff were friendly.

A quick overnight visit on nob hill looking for a seafood restaurant for a casual dinner with my wife, within walking distance to our hotel. Concierge suggested several restaurants nearby and we settled on this place for the local flavor and vibe of the neighborhood...could not have been happier at stumbling upon this unassuming little gem. The host could not have been kinder or more gracious, continuously stopping over to check on our meals and to top off our water glasses. We both ordered sea bass with fresh vegetables and sliced potatoes, and Mixed green salads with goat cheese. We ate everything...and I mean everything...and I can't remember the last time the two of us have done that. Delicious seafood, in a cozy setting watching the streetcars drive by made for a wonderful end to a busy day hiking the hilly streets of this city by the Bay.

We waited for a great table by the window and had an excellent apple martini. A bit on the strong side, but that is what we have come to expect from American drinks. The food was excellent, the filled shrimps were awesome, the cajun shr

I've eaten here for decades; it's always great. We especially love the potato encrusted salmon. Sophia is always gracious!

We had a wonderful seafood dinner at the Hyde Street Seafood House. The lobster bisque was excellent. The salmon was cooked to perfection. The service was outstanding. We look forward to coming back to this restaurant on our next trip to San Francisco.

Excellent seafood restaurant near where I was staying. Nice wine list ( not too expensive ) and the food is just perfect. I highly recommend.

I tend to aviod restaurants in predominantly tourist areas, if possible. I may never know whether there are great restaurants at Pier 39. I am certain to return to a little restaurant a few uphill blocks walk N of Chinatown. We passed a live fishmart on the way filled with salt water tanks and old Chinese ladies scooping out fresh fish for that night's dinner. My wife and two grown boys and I had a first class feast with appetizer chowder and bisque followed by lemon-butter swordfish, parchment-wrapped halibut, fresh brook trout and large grilled prawns stuffed with a minced crab-lobster-scallops mix followed by creme brulee, bread pudding and berries with cream. All to perfection. only $120! unbelievably good value. Generally open 5-10 PM; Happy hour 5-7. Phone 415-931-3474. Hyde Street Seafood House at 1509 Hyde Street. JD from Thousand Oaks

I have been to this restaurant two years ago and it was excellent. Now it is a terrible one! There is no heating sistem so I had to dine wearing my coat. The personnel is all chinese, even if the food on the menu is as it used to be. I asked for the special fish of the day, in cocotte, and it was raw in the middle with uncooked potatos and lot of cabbage (it tasted horrible). A real disappointment!

Very friendly and accomodating staff. Excellent food and service. A nice night out.

We ate here on a rainy Saturday night. The place was busy, but we felt unrushed. Both of us had fish in parchment. It was well seasoned with fresh herbs and not salty. Service was attentive but not overbearing

My husband and I had just arrived to San Francisco and all we could think was OYSTERS! Our hotel was situated in the financial district so we walked to Nob Hill to find Hyde Street Seafood House and Raw Bar. It was dimly lit, nautically themed (maps all over as wallpaper), and mildly busy. We were seated one spot away from a couple that was dressed up and another on the opposite side of us in what looked like jogging gear, so there was quite the eclectic mix of people. We were dressed moderately and greeted by server number 1. Not overly friendly and I was thinking maybe he thought we were there for water and soup (not the case). We ordered wine and a margarita and waited for our drinks. Meanwhile a happy, quickly moving man (whom I believe was named John) came by and asked if we wanted an appetizer. This waiter was the happiest guy I had ever seen! He talked to everyone. We placed an order for 12 oyster and they were an eclectic mix--delicious! Meanwhile we had a few waiters bring us our other dishes: lobster bisque and bacon wrapped scallops with a honey Dijon sauce. First off, the lobster bisque was one of the best I have ever had. Chunks and I mean chunks of fresh lobster. Sometimes bisque can be overly creamy or thick, not this one! I would go back just to have it! Bacon wrapped dates-succulent and paired with a nice salad. Three nicely sized scallops wrapped delicately in crisp bacon with a honey Dijon sauce. The only downside was that the service wasn't super as I felt we were not expected to be valid customers. A couple sat down next to us that ate at the restaurant two days in a row (and in the past based on the first name relationship they had with John). I guess for being our first night out, I expected a bit more. Overall very good.

We went past this place twice on our way to Fisherman's Wharf and the Buena Vista and decided to stop in for dinner. It is a wonderful restaurant with great seafood. They have a nice selection and will try to accommodate most requests. The service is very good in an atmosphere that is warm and friendly.

I ordered to go and waited at the bar while it was prepared. Just after 5, it was happy hour, so 12 oysters on the half shell for $15.00...an excellent deal. Very fresh, service was good, about 20 minutes for 2 excellent entrees. Try the En Papillote dishes which are their specialty. Very good.

The crab cakes were mostly filler and not much crab. Cioppino included over cooked gummy pasta. Not a good idea. Oysters were fresh and reasonably priced. Great service. The included above, with two wines, two beers and a bottle of Evian water, $98.00. Sorta steep but it's San Francisco, everybody's favorite city.

The best part of my dinner was the Lobster Bisque. I tried the local Sea Bass, herbs & vegetables baked in paper…. as it is a signature dish. What a tasteless meal! It needed garlic & spices. I tried it- it was an experience. Service was just OK. Never again will I waste my time going here. There are too many wonderful places to dine at in San Francisco.

The seabass wrapped in parchment paper was amazing! Worth the walk from our hotel. The cable cars run just out the front door as well. Would return!

Very fresh, local seafood. Nice place for an intimate dinner. Portions on the small size. A neighborhood place in Nob Hill, not a tourist trap. Very good service also.

I could be mistaken, but I thought this used to be the Hyde Street Oyster Bar. This time it seemed everyone working was oriental, so maybe it has changed hands. It's still worth a try. I especially like the "en pappillote" preparation of fish. Subtle, but not overpowering infusion of flavors into the fish (salmon in my case). Good Ceasar salad, good wine and fresh oysters. On the Hyde street cable car line, so it's convenient.

go in happy hour: drinks are cheaper. Sole was very good, combination of scallops and fish ewcellent for price of 50$ with beers and coffee. I'll be back!

The food is good and inexpensive. Service is very good. Preparation of meals is a little too simple and the ambiance which looks inviting from the outside is tired and and a bit dreary when inside. Chairs are uncomfortable but I suppose the management does not want diners to linger as this can be a busy spot. This is a better spot for casual seafood than many of the large tourist traps around Fisherman's Wharf. The restaurant is easily seen and accessed from the Hyde Street cable car which probably adds to its popularity.

Fell into Hyde St. Seafood House for dinner while on vacation. Parchment-wrapped seafood with steamed vegetables is their hot ticket. The seafood is fresh, but the prep is nothing spectacular. Tried the cajun combo which which was 3 shrimp and 3 bay scallops scampi (it ain't "cajun" just because somebody adds a dash of paprika to the butter, sparky)...The prices aren't outlandish, but at any decent diner back home in NY, they throw in salad and dessert for the same price, and you have enough leftover for tomorrow's dinner besides. Nice enough room and decent service. Happy hour (which we missed) looks like the way to go here. Hyde St. is probably a no-brainer for Nob Hill locals, but there's more interesting options in town.

We were seated and our orders were taken fairly promptly -- no problems there. The menu is a bit on the expensive side compared to what I am used to with seafood (though apparently I'm in the minority here -- $13 for crab cocktail is cheap? not here!) but the food is of great quality and the atmosphere could definitely be good for business or romance if you wanted.

The mahi mahi en papillote was unbelievably good. Great service. Highly recommend this neighborhood gem.

I first noticed this place on a joy ride on the Hyde-Powell cable car just as it swings around the corner off Jackson onto Hyde. It looked inviting enough from the outside but the web reviews were all over the map: long wait times, neglected service, ambiguous food quality. Generally the reviews were favourable. The worst reviews seemed to be from several years ago. From my experience last week I was pleasantly surprised. But I really think you need to take advantage of the happy hour specials (5:00PM to 7:00 ) to make it work. I’m not saying it’s a destination restaurant but it can be a good part of a fun night. At 5:00 PM or so catch the Hyde-Powell cable car around Union Sq or Market street or start from the Hyde and Beach cable car terminus. Enjoy the ride, sights, the operators and the locals in either direction until you get to Hyde and Jackson and jump off. By now it will be solidly into happy hour and the place will not be too busy. Swear that you’ll not wait more than 10 minutes. My wait time was zero but this is February and no tourist hordes. If the wait will be long, forget it. There are several nice restaurants further up Hyde. The décor is definitely nautical but I’m not sure how it all hangs together. The ceilings are high, the walls are covered with area nautical charts and there are curious faux beams as well. Still, its interesting enough and from the dining room you get a good view out the large windows of local neighbourhood comings and goings. I ordered the oysters and beer at happy hour prices. The oysters are small so you can easily finish a dozen. They’re fresh and you get a thoughtful variety. I’m staggered by the size of American entrée portions so I usually just order a selection of appetizers. I ordered the lobster bisque which the reviews recommended. I’m not a connoisseur: the bisque had the consistency of course oatmeal rather than chunky chowder but with a couple of twists of black pepper and some bread it was satisfying. Lastly I ordered the sear tuna. I thought the 5 or 6 pieces were generous, tasty and tender and with the small accompanying roquette/ arugula salad it was perfect. By then I had had it. Three glasses of beer, oysters, bisque and seared tuna for about $45 without tip. Service was attentive and helpful. No complaints. But then, this is early evening in February and the place was only a quarter full. If I had a gripe it would be with the heating. February is not shirt sleeve weather and despite using a couple of space heaters the high ceiling dining area was chilly. Bring a sweater if it’s cold outside. The bathroom set up is a bit weird. I’d say it was semi-private. Certainly not offensive but if it’s a busy night you might feel a bit awkward. It should be close to 7/7:30 by now. Either catch the cable car out front to continue on your journey or better, walk north a bit up Hyde to the top of the switchbacks on Lombard St for the gorgeous sunset views and across to Coit tower. Still plenty of time to stroll through the evening. It may not be a destination restaurant but as part of an interesting cable car, happy hour, satisfying meal, stroll and sight seeing experience I thought it was a pretty good package.

While the restaurant is located in an older residential/shop neighborhood, don't let that put you off - food is delicious. My wife had pan-seared halibut that was perfectly seasoned and I the corvina sea bass en papillotte that was also prepared very well, which is their specialty.

Quiet neighborhood place. Oh, the salmon en papillote...

Hyde Street Seafood is a hidden gem in Russian Hill with fresh seafood options, great happy hour specials, and overall decent prices! I recently had dinner with my mom who was visiting and she loved it. We each had a steaming bowl of the New England Clam Chowder that had great flavor (not too "seafoody" at all), split a caesar salad, and then shared the Cajun Scallops and Prawns dish. Paired with a glass of Chardonnay, our meal and overall dining experience was fabulous. I would take anyone here who wants to have a great seafood meal in San Francisco!

We went to this restaurant on the recommendation of our hotel concierge. Turns out once we got there, we remembered we had actually eaten here a few years ago. The food was very good and the servers exceptionally friendly. My husband enjoyed his parchment paper baked fish and my potato coated king salmon was excellent. This is a busy little restaurant so don't expect a lot of privacy. It is on the cable car route so is easy to get to if you are staying in the general area.

I love this place. It is comfortable and welcoming but most of all, the food is always so good. It is fresh and perfectly cooked.

I ate this meal savoring every bite. The steamy and creamy snapper en papillote was absolutely delicious, while my husband's cioppino was a close second (with giant mussels). Such flavor to both entrees, which followed ceviche. We were in such a happy seafood state- no dessert necessary at the end. An awesome bartender recommended this spot over Swan Oyster Depot. Glad we took his advice!

Food was fantastic. The setting was very nice with great service. Our meal was wonderful and far from the fisherman's warf craziness

We saw this little restaurant from the cable car on the way to Fishermen's wharf. On the way back we jumped of the car and went in. We did not regret it for a second. A friendly staff and a happy hour menu from 5 to 7 with a good variety of fish and other dishes made us smile. It was not expensive and the interior decoration together with the attentive staff mad it a great early dinner. As there is a Cable Car Stop just in front of the restaurant it is easy to reach. Stop there next time and enjoy a loveley dinner.

I came here because it came highly recommended. When I walked in, my impression was that the place had not been redecorated since the 70s or 80s, and it would be wither really awesome food, or not. It was the latter. I ordered a lobster bisque, which was almost grainy. The flavor was bland at best. I had the crab en croute for my main, and again it was so bland that the crust was the best part. This may be the most disappointing restaurant in SF I've ever been to.

We stopped here on a referral. The restaurant is very nice and quaint. Our server did an excellent job. All over our dishes were very good. We had the lobster bisque, clam chowder, cioppino, halibut, ice cream and cookies and bread pudding. Only slight disappointment were the cookies.

Talk about a San Francisco experience. One of the best ways to get there is by cablecar. Right after the cablecar turns onto Hyde Street ( westbound). It's unassuming in appearance but the seafood is well prepared. If you live seafood en croute, this is the place.

Thank goodness we found the Hyde Street Seafood House. The location is in close proximity to the better hotels on Nob Hill and the Hyde Street neighborhood is quiet and pleasant. Our dinner was simply outstanding. The wine selection was very good. We followed the suggestions of our waiter for the choice of oysters, entree, and dessert, and were delighted with the quality of the food. The service was attentive while not being intrusive. Overall we had an excellent dining experience.

The food was average, I went there for oyster and a glass of champagne. Oyster was good champagne not served in glass. It is ok no problem ..... I will take a beer. Beer was good and I ask for another one ! Never arrived but properly add in the bill together with a 10 box error in the sum and a complain from the French waiter , I gave you the second one ! Make the long story shot , I exit the restaurant with Drought, with the confirmation that French are not good on service . Stay away there is other beautiful place in the area.

O wanted to leave a good review. The staff went above and beyond, raw oysters were good but...that's all I have to say about that

We were there in April and had a great meal. I ate the stuffed prawns and my husband had the seafood wrapped in parchment paper. We both loved our meals. Ther is an oyster special during happy hour. The space is a lite tight, but we were there erly so it was not bad. Service was ok, but not spectacular.

My husband and I dined with friends at this restaurant on 4/18/12. We were on a 3-day visit to San Fran and our hotel (Inn at Union Square...great place to stay) recommended the Hyde Street Seafood House for dinner. Honestly, my huband and I agreed that it was the best fish dinner we have ever had. There was a really interesting offering of entrees and the food was outstanding! We thought the price was very reasonable and enjoyed the lovely, but non-obtrusive ambience of the restaurant, (away from the noise/hubbub of some of the more touristy areas). The service was excellent. We're looking forward to returning here for dinner the next time we are in San Fran.

We had the place to ourselves (which was unnerving), but it was QUIET which I love and the food was great!

Nice atmosphere. Service was excellent. My husband is very picky about the size of his mussels. He likes them small. The server went to the trouble of having the kitchen choose the smallest ones for him. The mussels and clams were really good. Our (grown) kids had the entrees en pappilotte which they enjoyed a lot.

This is a great seafood restaurant located in the Nob Hill area. It's a smallish restaurant that is not fancy but more than adequately furnished. A small bar and lounge is next to the main dining area. The food is absolutely great. A previous reviewer raved about the lobster bisque which I ordered and I must say this was the best bisque that I've ever had. My entrée was the New Zealand Blue Sea-bass en papillote and my wife had the Cajun style shrimp and scallop dish which we enjoyed immensely. The waiters and maitre'd were very cordial and friendly. All in all this was a great dining experience.

We lived in San Francisco for several years and this restaurant had a very good reputation. Eat there on a recent return trip and had poor service. We both ordered baked fish in paper which they claim as a specialty. My wife's was inedible and my was only slightly better. Service was inattentive at best. Worst dining experience we have had in a long time. At least they did not charge us for my wife's entree, but did not apologize either.

I have never given an unfavorable review on Trip Advisor, however, this experience warrants one. Let me start off with a positive - The food here was excellent, the ambiance is wonderful, old school and nautical - it gives you a great feeling when you walk in. Our waitress was horrible. So, my rating of this restaurant is only 2, because I go to dinner in San Francisco for an experience: the food, the service, the ambiance. My Sister and I went here for dinner on Valentine's Day weekend on Saturday night. We were seated upstairs near the kitchen and waited approximately 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. Ok, it was a Holiday weekend, they were busy, we can understand that. The people next to us had already finished their meal and waited approximately 15-20 minutes, with their credit card in their hand to receive and pay their bill. Our waitress was brunette and had her long hair pulled back into a pony-tail...I would give you her name, however, she never introduced herself. She started off with "are you ready to order?" and we asked if we could order drinks first. We ended up ordering our drinks, appetizers and dinner at the same time, realizing that this would save some time. Those were the only words she spoke to us...she never came back to ask how our meal was, if we needed anything else, or to replenish our water, even though she refilled the water at the small table right next to us and could see that our glasses were empty. We had to ask for them to be refilled in the next millennium of when she came by. She brought my wine out and brought my Sister's wine about 10 minutes later. We ordered the Crab Cakes appetizer, which was delicious! We also ordered the Lobster Bisque and Clam Chowder, which were all brought out at the same time, maybe she was saving time as well. We also ordered the signature dish that they are known for, fish and vegetables cooked in parchment paper. It takes a long time to prepare and we knew this when we ordered. Also, the waiter or waitress opens and folds back the parchment paper once it is placed in front of you. Our waitress placed ours in front of us and walked away and we thought, ok, we will do this ourselves - forks and knives ready, however, she abruptly pulled them from our place settings and gave them to another table. Again, no words from her. Not, "Im so sorry, I made a mistake" or "oops, these are not yours" or anything, no words at all. She placed them in front of the other couple and it wasn't their order...she then took the order from them as well and placed them back in the food window of the kitchen. They were eventually given to yet another table. When she finally placed ours in front of us, it was like she didn't know how to open and fold back the parchment paper. She was trying to use a fork and knife and when she couldn't cut the parchment paper effectively, she used her fingers to rip it open. Again, no words, no courtesy, no nothing and frankly...kind of unsanitary. Our wine was finished long ago, our water glasses also empty long ago and again, she never cam back to ask us if we wanted more wine or refill our water glasses. She did come by to take our plates and at that time, we just asked for our check. We were not going to order dessert or wait around for 15-20 minutes for our check to arrive. Her name was not written on the bill either or else I would share it. My Sister did not want to leave a tip, when she/I usually leave at least 20%+. However, we don't know what was going on in this persons life. I have to think something was going on. I would hate to think she was just a really bad waitress...it doesn't seem like the kind of place to hire someone without experience and a personality. I did leave a small tip, which also speaks volumes and of course, the experience prompted me to write this unfavorable review. Again, the food was excellent and the ambiance was wonderful. It was the service that really ruined the whole experience for us.

First of all, we received a strong recommendation for this restaurant from the Concierge at the Fairmont. When we arrived we found the small restaurant to be warm and charming and all staff, including the owner, were very gracious. After reviewing the menu, we decided upon the Chowder (which was quite good and, in retrospect, was thankfully very filling...) As my main course, I ordered the Halibut, but was disappointed to learn they were sold out. In lieu of the Halibut, the restaurant owner said they were substituting it with a "delicious" white fish called "Escolar," which she strongly recommended. Having never heard of this fish, she went into great detail about the incredible "buttery" flavor, basically selling us on the substitution and so I ordered this as my entree.... I have to say, she was correct, the fish was delicious, as was everything at the restaurant. At the time, I was actually sorry I had indulged with the soup and bread because once the fish arrived, I was already satisfied and could only eat about 3 ounces of the fish (thank goodness!). Without going into great detail, I later learned why I have never heard of ESCOLAR...(Google this fish and you will get many detailed accounts of the gastrointestinal symptoms resulting from ingestion of this fish...) Many countries, including Japan and Italy, have banned the sale and importation of this fish and many others require that the fish come with strict warning labels. While the FDA lifted the ban in the US in the 90's because it is not toxic, they still STRONGLY recommend against the sale or ingestion of this fish. After becoming ill, I did some research on this fish and learned that it is considered one of the most controversial and dangerous types of fish in the World and certainly not something I would expect to find in a restaurant that came so highly recommended! To be fair, the restaurant was quaint and lovely and the fish preparation was unique and flavorful. The food was reasonably priced for the area (average entree around $25) but it is quite concerning that the management not only served, but SUGGESTED, a fish that is well documented to be so potentially dangerous! My suggestion...give this restaurant a try, but stick with what you are familiar with and verbally confirm that Escolar is not being used in the chowder or any of the other dishes.

Seafood for a couple in town for the weekend. Oysters, delicious. Fresh and flavorful. Thoughtful, well conceived seafood menu. En papiotte local bass and also salmon- WOW. So delicate. So delicious.

Visited this restaurant last night with high expectations based on the reviews here & it was terrible. Our group was keen to sample the oysters & other seafood. Our waiter had to check if they had any calamari when we ordered it!! We couldn't get any of the cocktails off the drinks menu only beer & wine available??? There's lots of beautiful restaurants here but this wasn't one of them.

We ate here on spring break this year with out teenage daughter. The service and food were excellent. We each had one of the specials and none disappointed. The restaurant was full of who appeared to be locals. Laughter and happy conversations abounded. Highly recommended!!!

I decided to try the restaurant’s speciality of fish in papillote- the daily special was halibut so I chose this. Absolutely perfectly cooked fish with infusion of herbs and white wine adding flavour and loads of julienne cut vegetables. Very delicious and understated meal.

Love the oyster happy hour. Good beers on draft as well. The staff was very friendly, I would highly recommend if in the area. Quaint with an inviting atmosphere.

We found this hole in the wall by accident and are very glad we did! Great atmosphere, service and amazing seafood! We had several raw oysters and all ordered the special whole garlic roasted Dungeness Crab. It was phenomenal! Most definitely worth a visit!

We had a great meal, fairly priced, and with excellent service. We'd go back. We liked the stuffed prawns and the grilled swordfish.

My husband and I went to Hyde Street Seafood House for what we hoped was a romantic dinner after having read the reviews on this website. We asked the concierge at the hotel to make a reservation for 8pm. We got there on time and let a harried waiter know that we had reservations. He said he would be "right with us" and then went to seat a table. We waited...and waited...Another waitress rushed past us a few times, completely ignoring us, and so we finally approached her directly. She mumbled under her breath and rushed away. Meanwhile, the dirty glasses at the bar kept piling up, which was really off putting. My husband approached a third gentleman, who seemed to be the manager. We told him we had reservations, and asked how much longer the wait would be. He told us he would be right back, and disappeared. We waited some more...and waited...We kept being completely ignored by the staff (hard to do in such a small space) and honestly it felt like we were ugly old furniture. Finally, after 30 minutes of standing around like idiots, we left in disgust, and went to Bix Restaurant, which turned out to be fabulous - great service, quality food.

My wife and I came in late on a Wednesday night and the restaurant was quite full but we were able to get seated immediately. The only reason this restaurant is getting a 4-star rating (and not 5) is because I felt we got 2nd rate service when we said we'd have water for now. [I hate feeling like a second rate customer just because I don't order alcohol.] Service took down 1 star because of that feel I got from the first server. The 2nd server in the restaurant however, was fantastic and not only checked in on us but cared for us as well. By the end of the meal I realized the 1st waiter wasn't brushing us off because we didn't order drinks at the start, it was more so that he was so busy trying to keep up that he just didn't take the same time to attend as carefully. So in other words, he was more inclined to get the work done quickly, then to make us feel more welcomed. You can decide which is more important to you. Service was definitely prompt from all employees! The food was AMAZING! We had the King Salmon and the Seafood Fettuccine Alfredo. The salmon was some of the best I've ever had in my life and the pasta was abundant with seafood! I'd even say there was more seafood on the plate than pasta itself! Overall a great meal! =D

This restaurant was recommended to us by a buddy who's a frequent visitor to San Francisco, and he was right! Easy to get to, just hopped off the Powell/Hyde cable car at Jackson St, and were greeted by a friendly bar-man. The place was busy for a Wednesday night, but we were seated promptly. Great selection on the menu, especially several different Catches of the Day. Everything was delicious, wait-staff were very friendly and courteous. Felt like a family business. The staff showed attention to detail, and ensured we had a fabulous dining experience.

NOM. This place is seriously delicious! Dipping the sourdough garlic bread into the clam chowder...I'm going to be dreaming of that until I can go back. The seafood ravioli - *drool* - was off the charts. We had appetizers and dessert too; equally amazing. The owner/hostess, Sofia, is an absolute gem. She's so sweet and welcoming. I love the vibe in this place; it's not pretentious at all and it's off the beaten path so does not have a touristy feel. I will visit every chance I can when I'm in San Fran!

very good food

Our first night in San Francisco we went to Hyde Street Seafood House, we were referred by someone we met in Lake Tahoe. We were discussing seafood restaurants in San Francisco and we told him our favorite was Scoma's. He said it used to be his but now his favorite was Hyde Street Seafood, so we thought we would give it a try. My husband was the only one out of our group that ate the raw clams, needless to say he got food poisoning, was in bed for two days out of our four day holiday. Scoma's is the place to go for fresh seafood.

If you like seafood! We had oysters: 12 for $14! Hard to beat! Also good bisque, fish en papillote, sourdough. Friendly and relaxed service.

Now THIS is the type of restaurant I've long been looking for in SF- a decidedly un-trendy, old school seafood house, with professional and friendly servers. I detected not a whiff of the typical child-ignorant SF snootiness when hipster employees spot a well behaved little girl. On the contrary, we were met with open arms by THE most friendly staff I've ever seen in SF. We finally made it up here now that my daughter can ride the cable car, and boy am I glad. The seafood prep and preferences here are a gluten-free diners dream, the shellfish is excellent, and the fish is exactly as advertised- simple and delicious. The wine list is fine, and the prices are very reasonable. This is the kind of place that would have put a smile on my father's face. Didn't try the cocktails, but that sounds good next time. This is such an easy cable car trip up the hill from the major hotel areas, so we will be returning every time we come to the City in the future. Fantastic.

I Live in SF and thought I would give this place a shot…prices are very, very, fair for SF…Food was ok to good…service was very good…Nice diverse menu and portions were small to moderate…I would go back…

We visited SF for a week in July and a couple of guys we met at dinner at the Nob Hill Cafe (also highly recommended) suggested we try the Seafood House for dinner. We did the next night and was not disappointed. The decor is nothing to write home about, but the meal we had, from the Lobster Bisque and escargot to start, to the seafood stuffed prawns as our main dish, it all was excellent.

This place is a true neighborhood gem in the vast and varied mines of San Francisco restaurants. It's relatively unsung & definitely untrendy. Yet seafood is fresh, delicious, and reasonable. A recent meal of dungeness crab was without doubt our best dinner in 4 nights in San Francisco. I'm not a fresh oyster person but the restaurant is known for these, and neighboring tables were clearly enjoying them. There are also steaks & other options for those uninterested in maritime fare. Ambience is clubby - dark wood paneling and a big cafe-style window on the street. Service is impeccable. Also it's convenient - just hop off the Hyde St cable car as it turns the corner onto Hyde. We've been twice, and we'll be back.

our fish was very fresh. hey a dozen nw oysters for $5 at happy hour. where do you get a better price. and all the fish dishes we had were superb. service was very good. wine prices very reasonable. will be back in a few weeks to try the en papillote. street parking can be problematic. so walk or take the cable car or a cab or the uber/lyft folks

I visited on a quiet Monday and early, and it was easy to get a great table. The oysters were delicious and a great price at Happy Hour. The wines by the glass were quite good too!

Fresh oysters are half price during 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. happy hour. Friendly service, hometown spot atmosphere. Can't beat the value.

Another great neighborhood type venue that is on the cable car line. Excellent food - great selection and nice wine list. Service was wonderful. Very enjoyable evening - relaxed and comfortable.

Visiting San Francisco with my daughter who likes to try new foods and restaurants like her Dad, I was very excited to try the food at Hyde Street Seafood House - especially the lobster bisque which had great reviews. We made reservations and arrived right on time and were seated right away on a flimsy table with cheap folding chairs. Seemed a bit odd, but we were there for food not ambiance. They had a regular menu and another with specials. They brought out water and bread right away, which was good. We ordered lobster bisque, crab cakes with remoulade sauce, lobster stuffed prawns with bearnaise sauce and sautéed soft shell crab from the special menu (which is my favorite food). After about 10 minutes the waiter came back and said he was sorry that they were out of the soft shell crab. This was frustrating because before I ordered, I specifically asked if they were out of anything and was told they had everything on the menu. Oh well, I let that go and figured we would start with what we had already ordered and get something else if still hungry. Now I typically only write reviews when food is great but really felt people should be warned about this place. The Lobster bisque tasted like canned crabmeat in a mixture of water and skim milk. It was mealy, flavorless and thin. Not sure why others gave it good reviews but we only ate a little and left the rest behind. The crab cake order had 2 cakes about 1 1/2" in diameter and were basically Stove Top stuffing with canned crab meat. Soggy, small and flavorless. The Remoulade sauce was basically cheap canned tarter sauce with overcooked chunks of egg white that added a rubbery texture to a terrible taste. At $21 they were a bad deal , but they were actually the best thing served. The prawns stuffed with lobster came with 4 medium sized shrimp (maybe 2 oz total) that tasted like they were stuffed with a day old version of the crab cake then broiled until dry and rubbery and covered with a "bearnaise" sauce that had broken and appeared like barf swimming in butter on the plate. This for $29 as an entree. Hands down disgusting meal that no-one should have to experience. With so many truly excellent restaurants in the area, save your time and money and go elsewhere.

Great fresh seafood with the Trolley for entertainment. Lobster Bisque was excellent and the Halibut Special was wonderful

We were there on a Monday evening and were able to get right in. My companion had the wrapped fish dinner and pronounced it delicious. I had the lobster bisque it was very good with a lot of small pieces of lobster without the usual cream base. I also had the crab cakes were fresh and cooked correctly not so hard that you need a knife to eat them. We had the fresh fruit with real whip cream. The fruit was excellent. The service was good the owner was helping out. Our waitress who was mentioned in the other reviews was very good but didn't smile much. The prices specially for SF were very reasonable.

Quite the nice seafood restaurant off the beaten track in Nob Hill. Lots of different dishes to choose from. Nothing to complain about regarding the service. Decent prices. Surprisingly low ranked here at TA.

This was recommended by a local and we were not disappointed. Reviews online said to try the stuffed trout so my husband got that - it was good but not as good as their French specialty Red Snapper cooked in the parchment paper. The Lobster Bisque was so amazing we went back the next night just for that and bread. My husband also tried the Oysters as an appetizer and said they were great! We LOVED this place!!!

Our meal here was fantastic, children were welcome. We especially enjoyed the oysters which were half price as it was happy hour between 6 and 7pm. The fish of the day was one of the best dishes of our 2 week holiday. I would recommend this to anyone but it would be adviseable to book a table in advance.

I found this place on TripAdvisor, and after comparing it with a few other places, decided we'd try Hyde Street Seafood. We were staying in the Fisherman's Wharf area and the restaurant is RIGHT on the cable car line, so we took the cable car from/to the Hyde/Beach turnaround (not a very long ride if you're going for a "touristy" cable car ride). The restaurant had a warm-feel with dimmed-lighting. Our food was very delicious and service was good, too. It's a little off the touristy-path, so some people, I'd assume "locals," did look at me a little funny when they saw me taking pictures in/of the restaurant. While we have no complaints, if we were to visit San Francisco again and stay in the Fisherman's Wharf area, we'd probably skip going here (and take the cable cars for a longer ride).

Nice all around restaurant. Plenty of food and the sourdough kept coming. Crab with garlic was great.

Fish baked in parchment is delicious. Not overly seasoned but tasty and hot. Sautéed clams were also nicely seasoned. Good wine variety but I think there's a full bar.

Ate here in May 2009, wanted to go somewhere where it wasn't over run with tourists like me. Hotel recommended and so do I. From the appetizer to the fabulous dessert, I was not disappointed. Plus I felt like I really was in a neighborhood place, no blinking lights tourist haven. Great food/Excellent value

The food at this restaurant was terrible. My entree was the worst I believe I have ever had, or at least attempted to have as I was not even able to eat it. They never even asked if there was a problem. This place is overrated in terms of food quality and value.

This is a great location in the wonderful Hyde Street neighborhood. Very quaint with nautical artifacts on wall. Great service throughout meal and our waitress knew the menu. Great selection of apps and seafood entrees. Had the grilled halibut and king salmon. Both were fantastic and couldn't have been better. Dessert was a chocolate mousse type of dish and it was great as well. Wines were reasaonble but not extensive. We had a nice bottle of Champagne. Prices are fair with dishes average 23.00. Recommended for anyone that loves seafood.....

I have been going to this restaurant for ten years. I love the service and the décor. The food is excellent and very affordable. Love the stuffed prawns béarnaise.

Recommended by concierge (mistake). After seated, waited 20 minutes before getting any service and only by me finding a waiter. Then waited another 45 minutes for our food which was below average at best. Family owned. Other guests waited 45 minutes at the good waiting for empty tables to be set up. I'd only eat hear again if I were desperate.

Went craving oysters and they did not disappoint. They had three selections and they were all very fresh. Their bisque is also a must have! Service was exceptional; personable and professional. Located on a cool little street this spot is perfect for those staying in Nob Hill who want a little seafood delight. Go...now!

Wonderful oysters on the half shell and great seafood entree selections. This small restaurant on Hyde Street has friendly service and really good, fairly inexpensive food. If you are looking for a nice neighborhood restaurant this would be a good choice.

I love eating in big cities. Many of the restaurants are wonderful. Hyde Street Seafood was one. We spent 10 days in northern California and this place was one of the few that offered something different on the menu. I had the halibut and 4 different varieties of oysters. We had a table next to the window which was great for people watching. The trolly stops right across the street which is nice if you want to go down to the wharf. The venue is not big but it felt spacious. If you like seafood, this is a great place.

Years ago I stumbled upon this restaurant and fell in love. Finally had a chance to be back in San Francisco and had to see if it was still there. Climbed up Hyde Street rather than wait in line for the cable car - it was worth the climb that left me breathless. Fun table by the window to watch the cable cars go by. Nice house wine. Excellent appetizers. My husband loved the escargot. I had the cajun combination prawns and scallops. It was small and a little expensive, but very good - the buttery sauce was wonderful to sop up with bread. He had scallops in ginger cream sauce and I had a stuffed rainbow trout. Both were very good. Dessert was their Secret coffee and the banana bread pudding. Both were perfect choices. The restaurant looks to have been remodeled a bit since I was last there and may be under new ownership but they left the things in place that worked so well years ago - Frank Sinatra was still playing, the service was friendly and perfect and the food was still amazing.

My husband and I went tonight for dinner, we loved it so much , I had to write a review !! We arrived at 6:30 ( Sunday pm) and were greeted promptly and were given water and menus right away . Our server , Johnny , came over and asked if we would want oysters , a dozen for $14.... Early bird special that the restaurant is known for ! They were so fresh and delicious, we ordered another dozen!!! We then shared steamed clams, fabulous with fresh herbs, and onion, and We had great bread for dipping in the clam broth , also orderd sea bass steamed with fresh veggies, and potato. We ate every bite, and marveled at how fresh and delicious everything was , and perfectly cooked, yet restaurant was not crowded! My husband and I are foodies, we love clean well prepared foods, that are delicious and fresh we scored a perfect 10 here. !!! I went dressed casual , and it was perfectly fine. I need to mention Johnny , our server, he had great timing, always smiled, offered us more bread, we had water refilled as needed, etc etc.... The women, and other fellow there tonight, were happy, kind, and helpful. After having desserts, chocolate cheesecake, and banana bread pudding, bubbly and warm in melted butter sauce ( so good!!!! ) we asked if they knew where we could get a bottle of lemon cello ( that we could bring back to our hotel) , Johnnie ran to a store on the corner to get us one.... They did not carry it, but he then found out where we could get one, and called. Cab for us to stop, on way back to hotel. Our bill came to $106.00 , we had more than enough food, we just decided to eat, and eat because it was sooo good !! The people that call this a hidden gem are right, RUN to this place for dinner, I promise you will be happy, and there is a trolley stop right there!! If you love fresh fish, Go !!!! They also have chicken, steak, and pork etc... But if they are a fish place....... Obviously , I can't say enough , the place is clean, neat , cute, white tablecloths,, and on smaller side, it has a relaxed vibe, and really, some of the freshest, most delicious, food, wine, and best service in San Francisco !!!!

This is my first ever review on trip advisor and how fitting it should be, that it is about this restaurant. We were in San Fran on our honeymoon and on our last night, when we found this place by chance. if you are not fish lovers then this place is not for you. However, if you love fish then you must go. The venue is very nice and the food is lovely. I had the whole lobster, which was my first and it was well worth it. For you English, we had two starters, two mains (one being lobster) one pudding and a very nice bottle of red wine and it was less than £100. Great food at fair price. Don't do pier 39, go to this restaurant.

Having dinner here was like finding a secret, neighborhood restaurant known only to locals who like good food. One of their specialties, salmon en papillote, was delicious. The service was excellent, the food delicious, fresh, and well-prepared and the ambiance pleasant and comfortable.

Came here with my Wife, infant son and Mother-in-Law. We enjoyed the place very much. Our son was getting pretty tired by the time we got there so his fussiness took away ever so slightly... but that wasn't the restaurants fault. The food was tasty. We got there during happy hour, which allowed me to enjoy an Anchor lager for $3.50. I had potato encrusted salmon. I was really happy with my food. My Wife had the special of the day which was a seabass with veggies that was baked inside parchment paper and when delivered they cut it open for you to eat. She really enjoyed it. We skipped desert due to our son but would likely return again. Service was just alright, seemed there were only 3 servers for the whole restaurant which appeared to be about one or two too few. They were always on the run so getting things in a timely manner was a bit of a challenge. But by the time we let around 7, there was a line OUT THE DOOR to get in, so it must be popular. Hope this review was helpful.

After having eaten in several expensive Fisherman's Wharf seafood restaurants with average seafood, we were very pleased to find this restaurant. I had the Potato Crusted King Salmon with pinot noir sauce ($16.95), and Nancy had the Stuffed Prawns Bearnaise (lobster, scallops, shrimp & crab meat stuffing) ($18.95), and both dishes were excellent. My salmon was perfectly cooked, light and flaky, with a thin crispy crust of potato, and Nancy said the stuffed prawns were wonderful, maybe a little too rich. We also had escargot and clam chowder, and both were delicious. Next time I'll try one of the "En Papillote" seafood selections. There is easy access to the restaurant by cable car right in front, I don't recommend walking as it's a good climb up those SF hills. We now have a favorite seafood restaurant in San Francisco.

The food was good, not great, and therefore somewhat overpriced.Unfortunately, we suspect that the microwave is their means to keep food warm. Service is efficient but impersonal. Not regretting our dinner there, but not sure I want to go back.

So we were told to go to Polk St to find a good seafood restaurant that would be away from the wharf area. After a very long hike and my friend's IPhone epic failure I just asked Google and it gave me this place. One of my friends what Lobster ravioli, one wanted seafood, and I wanted crab. This place gave it all to us. We first got cocktails two Apple Martinis and one Cosmo that were only $6 buck in a nice glass. Yes San Fran is expensive and being that this was a neighborhood restaurant that was awesome. The menu has tons of options and that is what we loved. So what the ambience was not all that great, but the food was excellent. Each person got what they wanted and we did have the fight the tourist crowds. I personally a good neighborhood restaurant when the food is good. Customer service was good too. I did get pictures, but I didn't take them of the food. I know I will try to get better at that so you can see what I am eating. Just let me say we had to walk the food off, because we were so stuff.

This was the second time we went there. One colleague who was part of our relatively large group on our first visit suggested that we return this time. We were only four this time. First, took me some effort to find back which restaurant this was. However, based upon location, and remembering that (one of) their specialty is parchment-backed fish, and with some help from Tripadvisor, I managed to figure out it had actually been Hyde St. Seafood House. Dinner was as good this time as on our previous visit. This said, let us keep things in perspective: this is not a terribly fancy place, just a moderately-priced, very decent place, i.e. very good value for the money. It looks like it is a family business, including probably waiters. Wine list is also reasonable, focused mostly on California, but including a few choices from France or Italy. So, will we be back? Absolutely.

We wanted to try dinner in a location not in Union Square and somewhat off the beaten path. Our first choice was booked but we thought there had to be other dining places close by so we took an Uber to Hyde Street. We walked by our original first choice and could definitely see they had a special occasion going on and it was full. A short walk up the street revealed Hyde Street Seafood. Our lucky day and it was a good choice. They serve many choices of fish & oysters and they have a nautical-themed dining room. I chose the parchment wrapped salmon and my partner had the fettuccine shrimp. I was informed the parchment salmon was their specialty and I will have to agree it is. Would have never thought of this cooking method but the salmon was perfectly cooked and the julienne vegetables perfectly cooked with a slight crunch. We don't eat oysters but from the other customers there were enjoying the heck out of them.

This is a locals restaurant on Hyde Street. We were staying just a block away and after a full day of travel wanted something close. The service was very attentive and the food was delicious. The entree was well presented and the taste was superb. Seafood is featured and should be ordered. Will definitely return when in the area.

We went to this restaurant our first night in the City. One of the thigns that sold us were the rave reviews of the lobster bisque. While the restaurant was fine, I have to say I have had better lobster bisque. Not that it was bad, but it is not a reason to go to this restaurant. We did have a good meal, however.

Quaint little restaurant that was recommended to us by the concierge at our hotel. A bit pricey, but everything in San Francisco is. I had the seared sea scallops and they were excellent, as was my friend's crab stuffed trout. It is right across from a cable car stop, so it was easy to get to from our hotel. Definitely recommend it!

I'm mystified by the many positive reviews of HSSH&RB. The decor is worn and dated, service was rushed, and while the oysters were fresh and tasty, the crab cakes were mushy and contained more filler than crab. There are many better-looking options along this stretch of Hyde.

We found this place in one of the travel guides in our hotel - and what a great place! The food was FABULOUS!! We all ordered a seafood dish and it was all great! Our waiter was very helpful with any questions we had. The desserts were excellent as well! I highly recommend this little place to everyone!

While on our Honeymoon, visited Hyde Street Seafood and loved it. I sampled oysters from the Bay area up to Vancouver. My wife had her usual shrimp. We had a cozy table and really enjoyed the atmosphere. The drinks were very good as well.
