Hands-Down the Best Indian Food in Portland and every other state I've been too!

By DJ W |

India Oven is our absolute favorite spot for Indian cuisine in Portland and honestly, one of our favorite restaurants, period. It’s warm, welcoming, and truly the best place to take your family. Even our kids, who are usually picky eaters, fell in love with the food and that’s saying something! We always start with the onion bhaji, perfectly crispy and flavorful. The garlic naan is a must-have, soft and fresh with just the right amount of softness and garlic. Our go-to main dishes are the chicken tikka masala (medium spice – so flavorful with a creamy, rich sauce and doesn't taste like over-baring Cyan Pepper like most Indian restaurants) and the tandoori chicken. The tandoori is next-level, seasoned to perfection and so tender it melts in your mouth. The staff are kind and attentive, and the whole atmosphere feels calm and family-friendly. We’ve had nothing but amazing experiences here. Whether you’re new to Indian food or a longtime fan, India Oven will absolutely impress you. Highly recommend for date nights, casual dinners, or especially a family night out!

Flavorful food

It is in my neighborhood so I thought I would try it..I was not disappointed. .the lamb was tender and the raj .as recommended was tasty..but it lacked the originality I usually find in Indian spices. .that said. .I liked it. .in the way I like American style Chinese food..I would recommend if you like the same..service is slow but..not distracting

yum yum :-)

Had dinner at India Oven last evening and all 4 of us loved our food. We had onion and regular nan, Eggplant Bhartha, Chicken Tikka-Masala and Boti Tikka Masala (lamb). All the food was hot, wonderfully spiced (medium) and extremely flavorful. It did take a little longer than we had hoped and since we were going to a play at Profile Theatre (next door) we were in a bit of a rush. If you go to this excellent restaurant be sure to allow plenty of time, they do make each dish 'to order' and that does take some time.

Enjoyed it. Pleasant SE Restaurant

Stopped here on a whim one Friday night. It was early before the dinner rush and fairly quiet, but the food was tasty and the service was attentive. In this part of the city, there aren't many good Indian options that aren't food carts or overly trendy. This place hit the spot.

Triple yum

We go to this family-run restaurant almost once a week. The flavors are fresh, the food plentiful, and the staff efficient. I have used this restaurant to provide lunch for a meeting, and the take-out service was extremely prompt. It's really impossible to go wrong with their food!

Family birthday meal.

This is a great Indian food restaurant. It has never been crowded when we have gone, but it always takes a long time for food to be served, even the before dinner drinks, which is important to me. However, I would go back because the food is consistently good. I have been about three times and my favorites are the naan, the curry, and tandoori dishes.

Good Indian restaurant

Went there for dinner on a Saturday. It wasn’t too busy. We had naan, chicken tandoori and a vegetarian meal. Everything was prepared very fresh and tasted great. Price was very reasonable.

Bland, bland bland food!

By BarefootBuddies |

We found India Oven's food to be very bland. We ordered medium spice and it was hardly spicey. The vegetable Korma was odd. Lamb vindaloo was beef tasting. The dal was pretty good. Service very very slow. Nice server. Ambiance was the best part. In a neat area on SE Belmont street.

All in all, just what we were looking for.

We were in the mood for Indian curry and happened into this unassuming restaurant on SE Belmont. Although service was slow, the food was delightful. Tandoori chicken was really fresh and without coloring. Eggplant Bhartha and Saag Paneer added mild curry flavor to round out the meal. It hit the spot perfectly.

Very satisfied

I was wanting Indian food, did some Google checking of same in Portland on the East side, and settled on India Oven, in part because it is relatively close to where I live. I asked for a recommendation among the lamb dishes, and the man taking my order (the owner?) recommended the Boti tikki masala, priced at $16.95. Because the dish does not come with vegetables (it's my experience that no Indian restaurants serve veggies with an entrée), I ordered the cabbage salad ($5) as well. The salad was perfection in its simplicity, and the lamb was delicious. I had plenty of leftovers to take home for lunch the next day. Would not hesitate to return and try something else.

Very disappointed

We researched all the options for Thursday lunch and chose India Oven, which claims to open at 11:30. At precisely that time we stood in the rain by a locked front door. Five minutes later, I walked down the side street and attracted the attention of a young man at a sink. I pointed back to the door and he shrugged his shoulders, then turned away. No apology. No explanation.

Solid sit-down Indian place

Portland lacks good Indian food-- while there's good street food to be found, there's not much in the way of curries. India Oven, then, is one of the best Indian restaurants for dinner, with decent food, good service, and reasonable prices. Chana masala is good; poori is a little greasy.

I tried this place with my nephew last night and ran into the most pleasant surprise I've had in a long time. It was near closing but they still had no problem seating us. The one and only waitress was very friendly, and helpful. Most all the cooking was done by a very quiet "mom" type woman who would like to to her prayers on her earphones as she cooked. Maybe this was translated into why her food was so heavenly. Normally I would have given this restaurant a three or four star because when I ask them to serve me some mild food they actually did serve me mild food and not something that would rip my face off. The real reason this place warrants it's five stars is that the paneer tikka masala and lamb korma I ordered we're unlike any others I had ever tried before. They were similar in flavor to others but had a Twist to them I just simply can't explain and probably could never duplicate. It was also appreciated that this woman understood that developing good flavor profiles does not include passing in bucket loads of salt. Most inexperienced Cooks throw salt in in the pan in order to make up for their lack of skill. This woman demonstrated a skill Beyond anyting I've seen in a long time. She had an interesting version of mulligatawny soup that was unlike others I had tried. And considering it's almost impossible to find on the menu in any restaurant. I was quite surprised. The samosas we're standard well made and not too spicy. The naan bread was absolutely perfect. Crispy on one side soft and bubbly on the other with little bits of char here and there. You will not find your standard Indian fare here but a uniquely different Northern India twist to your usual favorites. This will now do you mind go to Indian restaurant.

Good Indian food

Nothing too exciting here....the food was good and the service kinda slow. Nice, clean dining area. Noise from the kitchen which can be loud....so no intimate dinners here.

Nice dinner out!

By Bryan H |

It's been many years since I've visited India Oven. Came for dinner on a Friday night, and although service did start off slow, when the evening shift came in, the pace picked up significantly. Food and drink were all delicious. We ordered wine, Chai, samosas, two main courses which came with rice for a little over $50.00, not including tip. Slightly higher than I would have expected. As another reviewer noted, the ambiance is "unassuming" ... which translates to not that fancy. If you like Indian food, and you haven't made it over to SE Belmont to check this place out yet -- please go. They currently do not serve lunch, though.

I'll Be Back and with my copy of your menu memorized!

We collect Indian restaurant menus. Which means we eat at every Indian restaurant from B.C. to San Diego. In Portland, we were saddened by the loss of a few of your spots, but were delighted by the generousness of portion and the welcome of the owner of India Oven Authentic Cuisine (Belmont location - we didnt find you until now). Im told that the restaurant has moved several times, but they are in a good location now for business. Good! They deserve to be found! The sauces are indeed authentic and have different flavors for the different heat choices. We loved the medium and hot choices, but were not wow'd by the mild; in particular on the Vindaloo. The spicy chicken vindaloo was very good! Ocra, Egg Plant, wonderful Dahl soup!!! Heaven! Garlic Nan was very tasty. Service was running around, but it took awhile. So order the Taj Mahal Beer!! Tall bottle. There are a few other great beers on the menu, but we ordered this one. It kept us entertained while waiting for the food. Ask for a beer immediately so you have something. The owner is a wonderful gentleman. Not sure if the help was the family, but it felt like a family run business. Everyone very serious about the business. That is what I love. Hard Work, Great Food, and a Genuinely Good experience. I WILL be back! This is a step above the other Portland/Beavertonfavorite because of the sauces.

I ate here a long time ago, but I remember being very impressed with the tandoori chicken. The atmosphere was great and the service was good, but I remember dinner taking a very, very long time. Still, I am not a huge fan of Indian food and I remember really enjoying my meal here.

We loved this place. We tried it because of having a restaurant.com certificate. The food was really good. They were very nice. We will definatly be back.

best Indian food in PDX

By BA420 |

If you are looking for authentic north Indian food then try this place. We have tried different Indian restaurants in Portland and this one stands out. We used to live in Chicago and there are scores of Indian restaurants that we tried , all tasted the same. This one is unique because the chef who also happens to be the owner makes home made traditional food and you can really tell the difference between different recipes. Don't be fooled by the simple ambiance . This is a must try when in Portland.

Excellent food - the best I've had in a long time

The food is excellent and flavorful, all of the ingredients are fresh. I would eat here everyday if I could.

Authentic Indian Food

By bthaynes |

And how does someone from Chicago know that? I went there on business with two colleges from India and they wanted to go back within 3 days! They loved it! The flavor was a little more intense then my favorite Indian restaurant here and I needed to order "Indian hot" to get the right spice mix. Restaurant is nothing special with fast-food tables and chairs, off the beaten path but really good.

Great location, great lunch buffet

By Michelle A |

India Oven's lunch buffet is a guilt pleasure. Sure, there are better Indian restaurants in Portland (which isn't to say that Indian Oven isn't super good), but the all-you-can-eat lunch is a winner on cold, rainy days. The atmosphere seems a little basement-like, but the service is pleasant and the food is good and hot. If the urge for Indian hits you on Hawthorne, India Oven is a pretty good choice,

Always reliably good food

We have been coming to this restaurant for years, first when they were downtown Gresham, and now on Belmont. They have great Chicken Bryani and feel like they go the extra mile to make everything authentic. The owner could be a bit friendlier as his seriousness comes across as being in a bad mood. I have had Indian food at a few other places in Portland and feel that this one can stand up to any of them.

Pretty darn good

By AKtravelers22 |

I thought each dish we ordered was great. The owner seemed fine to us and we had no problem as others have mentioned. Each dish made fresh and we enjoyed it all. Three of us ate w an appetizer for under $60. Not bad in my book.

Flavorful but a bit heavy

By loradan |

Having lived in the Santa Clara/San Jose area for quite awhile I have tried many Indian and Afghan restaurants and probably a bit biased as I've eaten at several restaurants I would deem exceptional. I was excited to try this restaurant but a bit disappointed with my meal. We tried the lamb samosas, which was tasty and flavorful but a bit dry. The sauces served with the samosa were okay. We ordered Lamb Biriyani, which is usually a favorite of mine. This was a little too heavy and oily for me and I had a stomach ache afterwards. The Garlic Naan was very fresh and tasty.

Authentic North Indian Cuisine in SE Portland

By Prantik B |

This is one of the best and authentic North Indian Cuisine in SE Portland I’ve ever tested in last two years. Especially the goat curry and the fish curry with tandoor roti are the must haves among many. The test is authentic, which could be customized with own preference as well. Ambiance is awesome. This is a must go place for the person who loves to test authentic Indian food.

Authentic, but not to spicy!

By Chell_Schaefer |

I arrived early and was seated at the window right away. The service was fantastic, the food wasn't too spicy (though I ordered mild), and on a weeknight the restaurant had a nice hum to it. This is a restaurant I could see myself becoming a regular at... I'd like to try the whole menu!
