Great everything!

By haleykacos |

I went here with my mom and sister last week and it was great! The staff was super friendly and our food was brought to us in good time. We ordered a couple apps that we all decided we should have skipped, but ordered two chicken dishes that were DELISH. Awesome flavor and a big portion!

Good food / ok service

By jbienst |

Papadams were a tasty start to our meal. All of the food was very tasty. The decor is also very nice. Unfortunately the service was only ok and they play loud American pop music that makes it difficult to converse. I wish they would play soft Indian music instead.

Worst Indian food ever

By Kartik G |

So I normally don't like to write negative reviews but I felt compelled for this restaurant. I will start with the good things The location is great. Restaurant ambiance is beautiful and has a homely feeling. The decor and all is fantastic. Now we don't go to a place to eat the decors and all, but I just had to mention about the ambiance as it matters to some. Now the food - I don't understand how people are giving this place 4 or 5 star as the food was just bad. Now I am comparing this to other Indian restaurants in Chicago and other cities I have had indian food and by far this has to be one of the worst. Food is not spicy at all even though we had Asked for medium spicy. It was low on salt which I guess makes sense and you can always add it as needed, so that was good. We ordered paneer bhurji, dal thadka and lamb boti kabob masala. The boti kabob looked like Rohan josh. When asked the Waiter what is the diff in 2, he simple said rogan Josh has more liquid. Lollll. I was just baffled. And it' was so so. the daal or lentils was not cooked all the way and it tasted as if it was made for a hospital patient. The bhurji was so so The overall service was average. the waitress and waiter were too busy talking and gossiping with other tables trying to get the clients to drink more and get more tip from them ( where is that not the case) but that does not give them a reason to not follow up with their orders. We definitely skipped on the desert as the we were not impressed with the food so didn't want to pay more for desert. Also this place is some pricier than the other Indian restaurants in the neighborhood Like $2-3 more for each dish so it does add up. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone that wants authentic spicy ( not hot but flavor - again for the ones that do not know the diff in spicy vs hot) Indian food. There are other better ones but i shall not name them.

Fantastic lunch buffet

By mishawaka_man |

It's a little pricey but whenever I am downtown Chicago on business, I try to hit this place up for the lunch buffet. The chicken Marsala is amazing. The somosas are very good, Everything is wonderful. The sizzling plate of chicken tikka they bring to the table is an added bonus. If you want authentic Indian food in a well appointed upscale venue then shell out of few bucks and enjoy yourself her.

Solid Lunch Buffet

By Ryan H |

I have been to the IG buffet many times but the most recent visit was a pleasant experience. Multiple flavorful choices to mix with perfectly cooked rice. The naan was warm and plentiful. The tandoori chicken was juicy and just the right amount of spice. The lamb tasted fresh and the vegetables were all the right texture. Only thing missing was the saag paneer. Great lunch option.

Great Food, Bad Service

By UFMike |

Food was amazing. The garlic naan was fantastic and best chicken tikka I've had. The chicken semosas were excellent as well. An otherwise good meal was disappointing due to poor service. We had to get up at one point to hunt down our waitress. If service improves would highly recommend.

One of Chicago’ s true traditions of great Indian cuisine!

Indian Garden is a must go when in Chicago! IG is a superb tradition of excellent Indian cuisine! The atmosphere is warm and decor beautiful. We had a wonderful dinner and will return again!

Best Indian Restaurant in Town

By Theresa R |

If you like Indian Food, this is the place to go! It’s a must! The atmosphere is so wonderful and inviting! You are able to look out over the city from inside the restaurant, watching the hustle and bustle, but know you are surrounded in a very welcoming peaceful atmosphere. The smell is delicious and exotic. Please stop here for a wonderful, generous buffet for the lunch hour or stop by for dinner. The Staff accommodates your every need!!

Friendly Service and Good Food

By Stany_VE |

We enjoyed a nice dinner in a pleasant setting. The waiter was very helpful and the suggested menu was a rich palate of tastes but the tandoori chicken turned out a bit dry. Would definitely go back!

Surprisingly Good Indian Food

By Trevor P |

Good variety of food at a reasonable price. It was conveniently located in downtown Chicago. I was in town for a conference and dined there twice during my stay.

Delicious food, excellent

Amazing Vegetarian Food

Good Indian food

By Sam Jo |

Visited this place during my recent visit to Chicago. Being located on second floor, it is not easy to spot from streets. You will find it only if you are looking for it. Management can improve the external signage which can drive more traffic. That said, the service was very prompt from the time I entered. Papad were served as complimentary almost immediately. They took my order with a small request for customisation ( slight deviation from printed menu) and food was delivered accordingly. The place will get busy in the evening. They give you option of meals ( kind of platter which is combination of pre set dishes) 22 USD veg platter will get you NAAN, Rice, Dal and Subji. The Non veg platter If I remember right is 26 USD where you get a chicken dish in addition. Else you can also order from the menu. Service was very prompt. They tried to be informal and chatted with me. Food taste was good. I will definately come back.

Forget Devon Avenue

By Cheryl C |

For any Chi town visitor or local, if you LOVE Indian food like I do, THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE. It's a little tricky finding it, but that's half the fun, isn't it? Located almost next door to Tim O'Tooles on Ontario and Fairmont it is upstairs next to the IVY Hotel. They do have an elevator that can collect you if you call ahead. I have been inhaling this food for 24 years and counting and to me, this is the best you get unless you are getting home cooked fare or going to India. The Chefs have been constant over the years and turn over is rare at this restaurant so it becomes somewhat of a family feel over time. Each dish is delectably prepared and portions are very large so there is always take out. The Owner and Manager take great pride in taking care of your gastric and personal needs and that says a lot in my book. You go here once and I guarantee you will be back again and again and again. I would give this 10 stars but they only give me a choice of 5....Go for lunch if you've never eaten Indian food. They give you a variety of choices on the buffet table and they will explain each and every dish for you if you aren't familiar with it. I'm hungry for it just writing this review. Scouts honor.

Nice food

By nickpetroulias |

Very nice restaurant. Their staff are very efficient and friendly. The food was amazing. Interior and ambience are wonderful.

Pricy

By Atul A |

This restaurent is very high price but not worth the money. You can eat the food but not relish it. Staff was a bit rude.

Excellent Dining

By Mark G |

Our second meal here on as many annual visits to Chicago. Dinner was excellent - hearty portions ideal for sharing; wide range of selections within traditional Indian favorites - chicken, lamb, vegetables. Service was appropriately attentive without being intrusive. Prices reasonable. In short, a can't go wrong spot if you like Indian food, and a good intro if you're not familiar with it.

Real indian food

By Ali Hasan |

Every body have to eat in this excellent delicious oriantal food resturant .the food was very spicey and the briani was the best I ever ate and the marsala was mouth water dropping good any this resturant has one Michelin star.

Lunch buffet is decent

By XinnieY |

I've been here quite a few times, mostly with colleagues since it's really close by where I work. It's a convenient spot for an Indian lunch in Streeterville area. Is it the best and cheapest Indian buffet I've had in Chicago? No. But I think the food is decent for what it's worth. Naan is freshly made. I think the price for buffet is alright especially since this neighborhood isn't the cheapest. Love the lamb curry.

Wonderful food!

By Traci H |

A great menu. Aromas wonderful in restaurant. Beautiful, peaceful decor. Some of the best Indian food I have had. Ate there a few years ago and had to return while visiting Chicago.

Good Food but

By antonio d |

Second time in this restaurant. I've been here five times last year, because the quality of the food. The food still the same but the ambience music get so bad that you eat as fast as you can to not go crazy. They put very loud and the selection of music is a range of indian worst kind of pop or an unberable eletronic music. The owner should no allow that the youngs waiters make that job. It's my adivce. Next time I don't go back anymore

great authentic indian food

By suleman m |

really enjoyed the experience here .a bit dissapointed that some items were not available e.g.vegetable biryani and chai ! portions were generous service was prompt our waiter seemed to be a trainee

One of the best Indian meals i've ever had

By Tk27793 |

Fantastic meal with quick service. Our server reccommended that what we had ordered may be too much and that we may like to share our rice and naan. She was definitely correct. It was nice to see that she wasn't just trying to sell as much as possible. Food was gorgeous, both me and my boyfriend love indian food and both commented that this was definitely one of the nicest curries we'd had. Would definitely reccomend.

great ambiance

By PK209 |

Met friends at this restaurant and the ambiance was wonderful. We all tried different dishes and all were wonderful. I particularly liked my Chicken Tikka. We sat talking for quite a while and did not feel rushed to leave. Great place to meet friends.

Weekend lunch buffet

The restaurant looks very attractive but the food was not good. The dishes were not well prepared and the service was in different.

It was simply ok

Was visiting the area and looking for some Indian. It was simply ok. Lots of variety, but nothing really popped in flavor.

Food was absolutely delicious. The staff was courteous; did not have to wait too long for the food!!

My favorite place

By Josie P |

I can highly recommend this restaurant. Whenever I am in Chicago I usually go to this place for some decent indian food. Traveling a lot to India you can see the difference, the quality is amazing and the staff very friendly. Especially Varun, always nice to meet you when I come for dinner to the Indian Garden. See you soon!

Indian Garden: When in Chicago

By Rahul |

This is the go to Indian restaurant when in Chicago. The butter chicken is amazing. The appetizers like Pakoras are good with Chai served here. The staff is friendly and approachable. Love the vibe and food options.

Authentic Indian Cuisine !

By Arun K |

Ordered "Typical Indian Dishes" , which were delivered on time. We had ordered Malai Kofta, Paneer Pasanda , Veg Biryani , Onion Kulcha & Plain Naan . The food was very tasty & simply awesome !. Simply impressed with the quality of food & feel like visiting again to taste other dishes.

Solid restaurant and easy vibe

By brett |

Had the molai kofta and a mai tai. Food was an 8/10 on flavor and drinks were a 7/10. Would definitely go again. It’s on the second floor.

elegant. above avg food. would say excellent compared to other chicago restaurants

By Vikmaniac |

elegant. above avg food. would say excellent compared to other Chicago restaurants. sevice was a bit mystifying; no one greeted me at the front door; no one told me of food options. The buffet was open so I just dived in. No server came until the end with the check. that was pretty weird. Overall food is better than 98% of Chicago Indian restaurants. nice and clean

Exquisite

Always the best lunch choice around the Magnificent Mile

By MilanPerson |

I always have lunch when I visit Chicago and roam around the magnificent mile. The lunch is a buffet with a huge selection of vegetarian dishes, two meat dishes and some fish options. There is always one soup and the usual selection of chutneys. I only had the vegetarian options but the food is amazing. Really amazing.

Impeccable

By Jerome L |

My wife and I had dinner here last night and were both very well impressed. There is a cozy little bar in the entrance to have a drink or two before or after the meal. The venue is comfortable and well decorated with Indian music playing softly in the background. We arrived at around 6pm without a reservation and were immediately given a perfect table for two, then served fresh water as one of the waiters brought curry and papadums with our menus. They have a perfectly decent wine list, we ordered a bottle of surprisingly smooth Californian Pinot Noir for about 30 dollars. Our waitress was friendly and answered all our questions eagerly. The food was absolutely delicious.

Highly recommended

By Algernon W |

I travel to India frequently and was brought up in the UK, so am quite familiar with Indian cuisine. Having lived in the US for last 13 years, I have had mixed experiences with Indian restaurants. This restaurant was excellent and the service was exemplary . I always think the nan bread is a good litmus test. Could not fault the meal... I will definitely be back !

Fantastic Food, Service Falls Short

By Sandra C |

My husband and I and our good friend decided to try the Indian Garden. The restaurant has no signage outside and a VERY small sign denoting the upstairs entrance...and I do mean UP stairs! While we didn't need elevator access, I did not see if it was even available for those who would. (Might be something to consider.) Because we had a theatre event at 7:00, we made an early reservation for the restaurant;however when we arrived, they weren't even open. We were allowed to sit in their lovely waiting area but we did have to wait for them to finish whatever they were doing. (Folding napkins at the front of the dining room, talking...) We were seated at a table with a great view and the dining room was decorated creatively. Received water and crispy breads/sauces immediately from the bus staff. Ordered cocktails and an "assorted appetizer" plate. While it was very tasty (with the exception of the tandoori chicken bites---VERY DRY) it took a very long time to come out. We were barely finished with our opening when our entrees came out---a bit overwhelming. We all shared fish tikka masala, lamb rogan jost and lamb chili masala with rice and garlic nan. Tender and extremely flavorful. Exceptional! While the food and the venue were amazing, I would call to see if they are wheelchair accessible before going and be aware the service is a bit lacking. Honestly, I don't expect my server to be my "new best friend", but I would prefer that she not spend more time talking to the people folding napkins on the empty buffet and not seem "bored" when she does interact with her customers.

OK food, sub par service

By EnglishLight |

So the food here isn't bad at all and the decor is LOVELY (they just refurbished the restaurant), but what REALLY let this places down for us was the service. There is only really one 'waiter', the owner (or one of the owners) and a bunch of younger chaps who run in circles at his beck and call as he chastises them. The result? My companion and my water glass must have been filled 50 times while we were there, but we waited 25 minutes before being asked our drink order, much less to order food. Every subsequent request took an age too. As I said the food isn't good, its a solid choice, but I've been here several times and the service just isn't up to a major metropolitan dining experience.

Great Indian food

By RudySzymon |

Everything tasted great at this place from naans to multiple vegetarian dishes we ordered. Very popular with people from India, waiting line at 10 pm during the week.

A truly lovely experience

By Coeb |

We visited the Indian Garden after looking on TA for ideas and recommendations and I'm glad to say you all did a fantastic job. Before I begin just let me say we were lucky to get a table, please reserve your table. We arrived to a cheerful host and were seated within a few minutes, closely followed by fresh water, popadoms and menus, a beautiful young waitress came to take our drinks and food order because we had decided on our choices else we would have been left to mull over the wonderful choices available. Now this is why you really need to reserve your table, in the short time this took, the restaurant had filled, with what I can only guess are the local Indian residence, this in itself is one of the best indicators of the quality of the food in a restaurant, that be it Italian, French, Chinese or in this case Indian that the local residence of that nationality frequent the establishment and yes we were right, we were served some of the most authentic, well prepared food we have every had the pleasure of around the world. No Westernised curry, but what seemed to be perfectly presented authentic Indian dishes, served by some of the most pleasantly attentive, unobtrusive staff we have every been waited on. All at very reasonable prices. Well done Indian Garden, if others around the world were to use your model, we would all be able to delight in the wonderful tastes of truly Indian food.

Best Indian Buffet in Chicago

By Maneesh12345 |

Great lunch buffet. Lots of veggie options and the nan bread was made fresh. Very good food and friendly professional staff. Will definitely be returning and bringing friends!

Friendly and clean and generally OK

By alpaca2016 |

Not a bad experience considering we were not expecting greatness. Food and service was OK. I don't like eating off cold plates but there was no problem getting them changed.

Ok visit

By Wolves woman |

Came here on a Saturday evening. Staff were pleasant and welcoming. Restaurant had a nice atmosphere and view from window was nice. Food wasnt the best, popadums were Stale, the chicken jalfrazi was full of vegetables, never known one to have broccoli, cauliflower and carrots before so this was a huge turnoff for hubby. Curry came with more veg than meat, chicken saag was good and I really enjoyed this along with the masala chai tea. The other downside and this happens a lot in US restaurants, the mains come out while you’re still eating appetisers. I told staff I wasn’t finished with appetiser’s and they took the food back but was still insistent on bringing mains out. Once those appetisers were finished main was on table. Let the diner try and digest some of the food first.

Excellent Indian food in Streeterville.

By Toret8 |

My spouse and I go to this restaurant very often. We love their food, so authentic. I lived in India a couple of months and this restaurant brings me back every time I dine there. The quality is good, the portions are medium/big and everything is delicious. Their palak paneer and muttar paneer are delicious, but would be better if they would add more paneer. Sometimes it's too much sauce. Only once the rice was sticky, but I told the waitress and she immediately changed it for a delicious variation of rice with cumin. Service is friendly and I will keep going there.

Kashmari Delights

By Larry T |

Had a late Sunday Lunch and decided to choose from the menu even thru the buffet was incredibly tempting. The honey ginger salad dressing is delightful, especially when slightly diluted with Raita. The Murgh Tikka Marsala was divine as was the Kashmari naan and Kasmari saffron rice with fruit and nuts. The sweet lassi, royal tea and Rasmili was outstanding. Our waiter was most helpful.

Nice place

By Harry |

Ambience in the restaurant is really nice . Food was good . I had ordered malai kofta and was just ok (3/5) and my friend ordered veg jalfreezi and was really good (4.5/5). They had good Variety of dishes and they also had a bar in the restaurant . Service was decent. Was surprised that they don't serve rice with the curry we ordered .

Great Indian food

By Bschroff |

We visited this place many times as this is a good restaurant for Indian food. The staff is good and polite. The serving of food is big. But unfortunately last time we had mixed vegetable platter which we found not at all good in taste. But other preparations like Tikki, samosas are all good taste. On the whole it is a nice restaurant to visit again and again if you like Indian food.

A wonderful way to start the New Year

By mullergirl Valli |

India Garden is a Chicago Institution. It never fails to disappoint. Food is yummy and the ambience and service is warm and caring.

Enjoyable meal

By snuggs5500 |

Been looking forward to a visit for some time. Finally had the opportunity and the visit didn’t disappoint. Showed up just before opening and they gladly seated us. We sat next to the window for a view of the falling snow. The cocktails were excellent quality and as expected. We thoroughly enjoyed our four different dishes. One disappointment was that we ordered raitai. We weren’t told that our dinner already included same, so we had a boat full of it. Once desert was ordered, the service became spotty. They seem to handle a number of large groups and I can imagine that things may not be the same experience that we had.

A good Indian Restaurant!!

By BeingNomad |

I heard a lot of good reviews about the restaurant and thought of trying it. I can say i was pretty surprised with with food what i liked: the interior decor, amazingly helpful staff, quality and freshness of the food what i did not: the price of some of the items was not justified

2nd visit after 6 years--not disappointed

By RBSP |

I visited this Indian restaurant which is located off the magnificient mile in Chicago, 6 years ago. When I went back to Chicago this year, I thought I should try again. I went on my own for an evening meal. Did not need a reservation. The restaurant is on the first floor, 37 steps. Has ethnic Indian decor. Clean and spacious. The manager was courteous and the waitress was very friendly. I had a started, main course and nan, raita and a beer. The paneer was very tasty and full of flavour. The nan was perfectly done. There is a big choice for both meat eaters and vegetarians and vegans. If you are going as a group, advise booking in advance. Overall, a very pleasant experience. Also went the next day for a buffett lunch for $20/- which was pretty good (excluding drinks). I have no hesitation in recommeding this Indian restaurant.

Good Experience and Would Return

By Sue H |

Great food, nice service (three friendly servers attended to us and made sure we had everything we needed), nice atmosphere, and not too busy as we were hungry and arrived at about 5:45pm. The only negative is there are a lot of stairs to access this restaurant.

👌awesome.

By punz jain |

I gave a look at all the negative reviews but could not really take it. To me everything was perfect except the tomato soup ( not to my taste buds but was diffrent). I had asked for spicy food. Really came out well. Naan and rotis were served fresh and hot.i ordered only vegetarian food. Restaurant had a gud rush of Indians and locals.i found right taste and would surely come back for more.

WORST Christmas Day dinner

By Karisma |

Do not come here looking for good Indian food!!!! Don’t know how they earned their awards, but the food is below average. The service is also horrible. The manager yells at his staff in front of customers, our name wasn’t written down, so we weren’t seated in the order we came, and only the manager takes the orders for every table, so imagine the waiting around for hours. Took us about an hour for him to come by our table to take our order, then the food came out and it was bleh. Want better Indian food? Go to India House!!! You won’t be disappointed.

Went there for dinner

By KalMe0425 |

One of the worst Indian restaurant I went for dinner. To start out, we were taken to a table which was still not cleaned. It took them a while for them to clean the table. It took another several minutes to get the table dried out. Our food didn't come out for almost 30 minutes. We were told " We are too busy ". After the food was served, no one came to our table to ask if everything was OK or we needed anything else. We requested a few bowls for our Dal. No one brought the bowls. The food was also terrible. I have never eaten such a tasteless dal was was not properly cooked. Aloo-gobhi was also Bad. Both the food and the service was very poor. I am never going there again.

Solid experience

By JP Explorer |

Having a decent experience with Indian food I would say good and genuine enough and is to be recommended. Could still be less oily but better than many others. Apparently it gets quite busy most of the evening. I was let down by the service however, friendliness was not on the menu that day, I normally expect better especially in the US. The restaurant is not on the street level look for the sign on the wall and go up the stairs.

Great food, unsustainable takeout containers

By LovetheAndes |

I absolutely loved my meal. So much that I took the leftovers home. Unfortunately the food was packed in several plastic containers, which as we know are not really recyclable. I suggest they change to compostable containers, and everything will be perfect!

Genuine Indian

By B18NJ |

The restaurant is located a flight of steps up from the street entrance. The menu is large. There are vegetarian and gluten-free items. Food is well prepared and delicious. Portions are large. Service is OK. Bread and rice are not included with a la carte dinner. Very good overall.

Great food, wonderful atmosphere

By Daniela B |

Definitely the best Indian restaurant in the area. The staff is very nice and helpful, and they provide fantastic service. The food is delicious and authentic, they have a vast menu and everything is prepared to perfection. Would definitely recommend!

Awesome food - excellent service

6 of us had dinner tonight and it was phenomenal!!! Authentic Indian food, drinks flowing, great service, wonderful experience.

Indian Warmth On A Bitter & Snowy Chicago Night

By Adrian D |

There had been sleet and snow all day accompanied with an icy wind and my wife and I hadn't brought clothing to cope with that kind of weather. We decided to eat dinner here and ventured out of our hotel to walk the ten minutes to the restaurant. Due to the weather it seemed to take a lot longer. We eventually found the restaurant and we were glad to escape the winter storm. The restaurant was warm and the staff were welcoming. The food was very good and we enjoyed our visit even though I wasn't feeling 100%. If you're looking for a good Indian in Chicago I'd recommend eating here.

Frozen and cultured food

By Harish M |

Water is the only good they served well. Biryani when asked with high spice level got a rice bowl with red chilli powder and meat. One of the terrible experience, even manager’s response for our comments seemed unfriendly.

Indian Restaurant at prime location

By swapnil |

Indian restaurant at prime location. This restaurant has overall pleasant ambience. Decoration and arrangements are well thought and appealing to senses. We went there around Noon. Immediately got seated. I noticed they don't offer table in a separate section (where Sofa seating is available) for all guests. Only few guests are offered this section. I would expect even distribution specially during covid to maintain social distancing which some guest may prefer. But instead 95% guest were seated in main dinner than this separate section. To place order make sure to tell waiter you are ready unless they won't ask you anything. Once placed order make sure you have enough juice available in your phone since it may take more than 30 min to get your dishes. It took more than 40 min for us. Fortunately food taste was good else it would be complete disappointment. We orders Planner Kadhau which surpringly had gravy. Usually kadai dishes are dry ones. Taste was good. We also order Dal Tadka. It was good but there was no Tadka at all. May be this is how majority guests prefer. Got Plain Tandoori Roti which was really good. 1 roti would be more than enough for 1 person. (Unfortunately) we also ordered Basmati Rice which cost $5. But this was no basmati or may be some cheap Basmati type. Not worth it at all. If you checkin on Yelp you may get free beverage. In short presentation is very well thought here but food service and food taste need a lot improvement. . considering food price it would rate 3.5.

Fantastic Authentic

What a find. If you love Indian food, you need to go here while in Chicago. Great menu selections; we ate vegetarian, which was easy to do. Huge selection. Hot, quick, courteous. A bit pricey, but delicious.

Among all Indian restaurants - This is the BEST

By dg144290 |

As an Indian, I'm particularly critical of Indian restaurants. Been going to them since I was a kid. Been to fancy ones, been to simple ones, this is neither, and is the best I ever had. Every one of them has a buffet. That's part of the business model in Indian restaurants. What sets them apart - a little common sense. No Indian restaurant I have ever been to, other than Indian Garden, kept the meat dishes completely separated from vegetarian dishes. They do. Add to that their food is delicious, and their staff is pleasant - all makes for a great dining experience.

Wonderful food and service. Buffet great for those new to Indian food

By Susan V |

We met a friend from out of town for lunch on a lovely Saturday afternoon. We have eaten here before and ordered from the menu. On this visit, we all had the buffet. Unlike some other restaurants offering buffets, here the selections were extensive, fresh, and nicely presented. There was something for every taste. Every dish we tried was delicious; some were exceptional. We eat Indian food frequently, but our friend had very limited experience with it. She loved everything and went back for several helpings. The buffet is a great way for someone unfamiliar with Indian food to sample various dishes. The service was friendly, helpful, and very attentive. The decor is interesting and creates a nice atmosphere. The restaurant is on the second floor with lots of big windows. We will definitely return.

Gods Food, Service and Price

By Poleinahole |

I lived around the corner for months and never noticed this place as you have to walk right by a sign pointing you to the second floor. I have been missing something. The service is kindly and efficient; decor is good but not lavish and the food comes quickly and is very good. Definitely a keeper.

Good food, slow service - staff need training

By Ravjad |

Despite mixed reviews, we decided to try this for some Indian. The restaurant was pretty full and while we waited, I could see that others were waiting too! But the atmosphere is vibrant and staff do apologise, saying that they were busy with numbers. The crab curry was tasty but extremely spicy. Lamb curry, naan, kulfi were all delicious. Pointers for restaurant owners: - you have good staff but that is not a substitute for good training. Basic training on how and when to engage with customers will help - staff could introduce themselves and advise that they will be looking after the guest at particular tables. This helps avoid disgruntled customers trying to get their attention. - don't present the bill to the customer until after staff have asked customers if they needed something more. We didn't have any dessert when our bill was presented! Pointers for would be guests - engage with the staff as they do not engage with you! - when you first get seated, hold them to a task - ask them to get back with water, or your drinks etc - relax - as they seem to be too

Decent Indian in Streeterville

By KidDocDMC |

Good Indian fare. The place was busy, but had room for me on a Wednesday night. It was rather loud, with several large groups at tables nearby. The menu was complete with Indian selections, though not exhaustive (did not cover all Indian cuisines). I got some vegetarian samosas, lamb rogan josh and garlic naan. The food came out with good pacing and was tasty.

Wonderful food

By AnniK_K |

This is one of the best Indian restaurants I've had the pleasure of visiting. Everything we ate (vegetable samosas, crab curry, murg vindaloo) was absolutely fantastic. We will be back for sure! The dishes weren't terribly expensive either, especially for downtown Chicago.

Tasty , good service . Food okay.

By danTA100 |

Nice restaurant which seems to attract a good local crowd. We love Indian food, found this restaurant to be pretty average and quite expensive. The tandoori was over cooked a dry.

Ate dinner here again for about the 10th time. The place is hands down the best Indian in Chicago. I would mention specific items but everything is good. Chicken saag is a must though. Great all around and owners are great people.

Lovey setting for traditional Indian food with just great service!

By jillybundanoon |

Such a pleasant evening in the cozy, nicely lit comfortable restaurant. Seating so comfortable, a full bar, wonderful food and ambience. Busy but noise level fine... Do yourself a favor by having dinner in this long term restaurant with reliable quality Indian food...We were treated so well and felt very welcome.

Traditional indian food in lovely setting with superb service!

By Jilly B |

Indian Garden is consistently really good. Wonderful service, comfortable seating, lighting, cost, elegant, busy but noise level good. The food! Absolutely delicious. All the old favorites . Do yourself a favor and go for lunch or dinner! You’ll be welcomed!

Great buffet for lunch

By jcisinthehouse |

We made a reservation for lunch but was not needed. The place is very nice and food was fantastic! I could have ate just bread all day and be happy, it was that good. At least the buffet was not expensive at all, I'm not sure about a la cart prices. I'd definitely go back

Not for lunch

By Shoshana H |

The first time we came to this restaurant was for dinner. The restaurant is nicely decorated, we ordered from the menu and were happy with our choices. This time we decided to come for buffet lunch. The restaurant was quite full, but the food was very unsatisfying . It was not presented nicely, some of the food was gone or dry. There was no real desert except some pieces of melon. One choice of soup. The server was indifferent to say the least. We are not going to be back for lunch there.

Amazing place must visit!

By Rob |

Food was fantastic. Had a lovely evening with brilliant service. The restaurant was lovely and clean with great decor. Would highly recommend!!

Very good

An excellent Indian restaurant. The ambiance is beautiful and the chicken tikki massala is delicious.

Fantastic Food, Restaurant Decor, and Service

By Scott Miller |

I recently visited Chicago and was drawn to the Indian Garden as it was close to the hotel I stayed in. The first thing you notice is how beautiful the intricate decor is in this restaurant, followed immediately by attentive servers who are equally graceful as they are polite. Then you bite into the food and it initiates your taste buds like no other Indian restaurant I have been to. My palate thanked me for this excellent choice. If you are a vegetarian, like myself, you'll find that their veg-friendly dishes like the Tandoori Sabzi accompanies their delicate sauces magnificently. The next time I'm in Chicago, I'll be back here.

Service and decor was good but otherwise only ok

By Ryan C |

Went here over the holiday weekend and it wasn't too busy as quite early. The decor is interesting and had a good feel, and the staff were attentive. There was an issue with a loud noise (presumably from the AC) so we asked to move and it was all fine, I'm assuming that noise is not normally an issue. The food and drinks menus have a good choice and at reasonable prices. However, the food was really average when it arrived, we were asked when we ordered if we liked spicy as we had chosen medium/spicy dishes. I find this happens too often, it doesn't matter what you answer (we asked for spicy) you can tell it's coming out mild. There was just no spice to either dish and it was a big letdown, no idea why they do this. It was my first Indian in Chicago and next time I'll try somewhere else!

Good fare of buffet at budget price

By Wanderer |

Well laid out restaurant, easily accessible inside the city. The buffet fare for lunch starts off with pav bhaji's, pani puris, and more followed by Indian breads with attendant special side dishes of channa masala, paneer offerings etc! They also have special non vegetarian dishes from the grill too.

Just so amazing!

By FoodieChefDina |

The restaurant from outside does not reflect the beauty of the place upstairs. Food incredible, measure your spice well because they do serve spicy. Staff very fast to serve. Captain very attentive.

Incredibly Salty Food

By KazzyDD |

I had food from the lunch buffet. The first thing to note is the limited selection ( unless you are vegetarian) 1 goat dish, 1 lamb dish , 2 chicken dishes , all other dishes were vegetable dishes. All met dishes were light on meat, heavy on sauce. You had to search for the meat For appetizers there was 1 soup, spinach pakora or salad. I typically add salt to most things I eat , which is a bad habit. No need here, everything was over salted, and to me , inedible. I still had to pay for it though lol. Service was poor, had to ask twice for soft drinks, and 3 times for naan bread. Definitely would not return.

Authentic Indian Cuisine

By Robert C |

I had some friends visiting from out of town. Almost all of them followed very strict diets, so I allowed them to choose the restaurant. They chose Indian Garden, a restaurant I had not been to. The restaurant’s second floor space is spacious and comfortable, and service was cordial. Especially pleasing is the wide, authentic menu. Dishes are served communal style in small metal saucepans. What I most enjoyed about my visit was the opportunity to sample authentic dishes I’ve normally not had in other Indian restaurants. Especially notable was the Mughali Boti Kabob Masala, cubed, spiced lamb young lamb barbecued in a tandoor and cooked in a tomato, onion and cardamom sauce, and the Aloo Gobi, potato and cauliflower braised with herbs and ginger. The menu also offers a varied choice of Naan Breads to accompany the dishes. The menu is so broad that it will probably prove daunting for the uninitiated diner. I was glad I was with a group who knew each dish and its preparation. The restaurant also offers several combination dinners. All your choices are made for you—these dinners under the section titled “Special Indian Garden Dinners.” These choices probably serve as one of the best options for the novice. Prices are moderate with most dishes at around $16 - $18. I look forward to a return visit.

Average food....

By IndianTraveller |

I visited the restaurant after reading the feedback here. The ambience and presentation were good but food Taste was not that great. I would not visit again.

Unsatisfactory Lunch Experience

By Joal I |

Service was poor, food was cold. We had to ask for someone to attend at our table a number of times before a waiter came to our table. The order we placed was not brought to us. The buffet servers, including the dessert trays were empty and not replenished in time; guests had to wait for quite some time or had to come up to the buffet table a number of times. The various dishes themselves were bland, cold and uninteresting. There was no space to move in the restaurant as the tables and chairs were too close together.

Indian Food in the Trees

By LCHokie |

A block off Michigan Avenue on the second floor so you're eating in the trees. Generous portions. We had the vegetable pakoras for an appetizer and main courses of Tandoori Chicken and Chicken Biryani with an order of Naan. Liked the Tandoori Chicken better but both were good. Too stuffed for dessert.

Wonderful discovery!

By Hope R |

Awesome food, service, and atmosphere. We stumbled upon the restaurant, looking for a late lunch We will be back.

Amazing

By Regan N |

Delicious curries with deep, rich spices. The naan is soft, and the biryani is fragrant. Service could be faster, but the food makes up for it.

Amazing Food!

By akristinea |

Amazing dinner with a small group of friends and family. Definitely recommend everyone sharing all the dishes so you can try a bit of everything. Really great staff as well!

Dinner with family

By ketansmehta |

limited choice of food for vegetarians. Jain options are also limited. The staff was however very courteous. location is central.

Decent takeout

By divya92 |

Food was pretty good, got takeout through grub hub. We liked the biryani and the paneer curry. Naan was okay too. Delivery was slow though.

I liked the vegetarian buffet

By Olkr1502 |

As a vegetarian I often visit Indian restaurants. This restaurant had one buffet with vegetarian food only and another one with non-vegetarian food. It was a little more expensive than other Indian restaurants I have visited in the USA, but the food was also so much better. You get what you pay for. The bread was great too.

Great Dinner

By John M |

I visited the Idian Garden with my brother and his 28 year old son for dinner. I'll admit we are Irish Americans. I love Indian food but I'm not an Indian food expert. So when we ordered our meals we didn't know what to expect. We all loved our meals. Service was good. Beer was cold. Our waitress (or is waiter the correct term) was friendly and very helpful. So when picking a place to eat my thoughts are I can get good pizza or barbecue anywhere. But finding a place serving great Indian food is a real gift. Try the Indian Garden out.

Still the best

By hutchis2017 |

We have been fans of India Garden for 20 years. The recent decorations and menu upgrades have made it better than ever. It is a great place for veggies and vegans. Nassir, our waiter, is a great guide to Indian cuisine and is friendly and professional. This is a high class, well serviced Indian place. Notice that many S. Asian families eat here. To me that is a sign of authentic cuisine!

Personal service that was special in a city this big

By meyergray |

Our 3 year old was greeted by the owner/manager immediately and made to feel at home. Our son told him that he was a "picky eater" and the cooks handcut fries for him to eat that night. When asked about how they made their mango lassi, I was given a can of mango pulp from their supply. This was wonderful enough, but beyond that, the food was amazing. The sign said "culinary nirvana" and they weren't lying. The naan was great, the mango lassi was amazing, and the sauces for all 3 dishes that we ordered with flavorful and spicy. Our best meal in Chicago.

DELICIOUS!!

By nuyu2013 |

Excellent food made fresh and served with care! Try chicken saag, fresh naan which melt in your mouth---sooo good. Masala tea is great as well---you will be back!! Prices are reasonable for what you get. Keep it up!

Excellent Cuisine

By FAY E |

Visited Chicago for the first time. Decided to try the city's take on Indian cuisine. Glad we did. Food was excellent. Friendly service. Varied menu. Clean and quaint atmosphere.

Good lunch buffet

By Thiru S |

Went with friend for lunch. Good ambience. They have a lunch buffet. Soup was very tasty. They had loads of vegeterian and non vegeterian options for starters and entrees. good value for money.

Great food, friendly staff

By Michelle C |

I had a very positive experience at this restaurant. Our server Victor was very friendly and advised us on our order. We really enjoyed our meal especially the Sagg Paneer which amongst some of the best I have ever had.

Best Indian Ever!

By Tess O |

This is by far the best Indian restaurant in Chicago, and the best I've ever eaten. We live very close and eat here often, I have never been disappointed! The service is also amazing, super professional and friendly. We eat here for lunch and dinner, delivery, etc. The delivery guy is so sweet. The lunch buffet is a steal. We love Indian Garden!!!!!!

Inadequate service

By eireman62 |

Nice food but absolute terrible service. We ordered a tandoori chicken and lamb biriyani along with 2 naan breads , some rice to go with it the chicken and a large bottle of beer to share The chicken arrived , no sign of the rice to go with it or anything else asked about them and the naan bread finally arrived 5 minutes later Asked about beer which arrived anotbwr 5 minute later and warm. Still no sign of the lamb. , another 10 minutes later Asked to speak to manager who basically was disinterested. This seems to be a constant issue at this restaurant. This service issue needs to be addressed So we only left $5 tip which we consider was generous given the service. Shame as food was good but occasion was ruined. Visit Nov 1,2025

Carry-out

Ordered from Indian garden while staying at the embassy suites. Very good food! Moderately priced and delicious. You won't be disappointed!

Good food

By divya92 |

Food has improved from a few years ago, had a sit down dinner. The yogurt was super flavorful and everything tasted pretty fresh. The waiter was great and had an awesome open conversation with me about the menu.

The service was terrible.

By Ellen L |

The service was terrible. The food was ridiculously spicy when I requested no heat. Under staffed and unprepared for Christmas Eve dinner😞

Especially Good

By Kevin O |

We were in town for a holiday family visit and we staying just around the corner at the Hyatt Magnificent Mile. We loved the amazing aromas that enveloped us as soon as we entered the dining room. The restaurant is located on the second floor with large windows looking out on traffic passing by on Ontario Street. We started off with a couple of glasses of chardonnay offered by the glass along with a vegetable samosa and garlic naan. The samosa was filled with vegies and the hot garlic naan fantastic! The only miscue was our server failing to offer any accompaniments for the samosa or naan until we asked. We split the chicken murg madras which was exceptional. We of course used the naan bread to soak up the spicy gravy, just wished there was more! Pricing was what we expected in the city, but overall delivered on all counts.

Good Indian Food

By Harshit K |

Variety of Indian food served. Good in taste. I had taken Buffet Lunch option and also A'la carte during dinner. Liked most of the food. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Sweets can be improved though.

Just like mom's cooking

By DocMum |

Traditional North Indian food in the windy city. Decent size portions and good taste. Frequented by local residents of Indian heritage which is always a good sign. Vegan choices labelled. Beautiful decor.

If I could give less then 1 I would

By Chann_smile |

We arrived at 8:30 and no one greeted you at the door, we visibly saw it was business and understand that. But after 30 mins we still hasn't been greeted only to have a man force us into doing a to go order. Based on the volume you would think the food was great but it was nasty. Had we not waited 1 hour to sit and starving we would have left. The food was disgusting and service horrific. Pleaseee.....Save your time go somewhere else. I have had better Indian places in Chicago.

Great for non coverts

By MancTeacher |

If you are not used to Indian food from another country, then this is a great restaurant. I find in America that it is rare to find a 5* Indian restaurant, as often there are concessions made. In the UK, we are now used to South Indian Restaurants, so wr have a fair bit of choice of food from different regions. This is a great restaurant. And everyone from the excellent bus boy through to the waiters advise you and help you. The food itself is nice and for an American Indian, it delivers. If you are from the UK, though? You may find yourself thinking that you have had better curries and Indian dishes at home. Worth a visit if you are new to Indian food or want things to be mild and Western.

One of the best Indian food

By ksayma |

It is just 2 minutes from my hotel .we decided as family to eat Indian food therefore we chose it .its very delicious food specially baryni meat and Masala chicken.dont miss the tandoori chicken .

Great Tasty Lunch.

By RealEstateBrokerBill |

In Chicago for 1 day. Arrived late morning. Being fans of Indian cuisine we asked our hotel desk clerk where we might be able to enjoy a good Indian lunch. We lucked out. We were told two blocks away, second floor and we would find what we were looking for. We did. Lunch was buffet style or you could order off the menu. We chose the buffet. Fresh, many choices, clean, nice staff, great ambiance and a window table over looking the streets below. Exactly what we were hankering. We would go back. Thanks Indian Garden !

Not a happy customer!!

By Gururaj K |

Went to this restaurant based on good review and proximity to where we were but very disappointing experience. Bad - Food was the major disappointment. Tomato Puree + Cheese does not equal Paneer Makhni. We could get the raw taste of puree and it was clearly under cooked. Other dishes were average. Service was also not good. We had pre-reserved but when we got in we were still made to wait and it looked it it was more of first come first serve basis anyways. It felt like the order taking process was rushed and we also saw servers arguing within themselves. Good - Ambiance and Location .

Underwhelming, bland, poorly spiced and luke warm food- Avoid

By Laband |

The restaurant is up on the second floor of an unassuming office block and much care has been delivered to conjure up a rustic Indian themed venue. That's the good bit. Sadly the kitchen produced a series of bland, brown entrees which blended in with the mounting disappointment. Service was Ok, but intrusive as the restaurant was not busy and there were excess staff milling around with nothing to do other than interrupt diners for compliments.

Indian Lunch buffet!!

By unnikrisb |

Place is nice for Indian buffet with good ambience. Little crowded on a Friday - lunch time. We loved biriyani , mutton curry and tandoori chicken(I love the spicy level in it). Snacks -methi vada and spinach was tasty. Butter naan was served on the table. The restaurant is located at downtown near our office (East Wacker drive). place is tidy and neat. Mixed reviews with group but most of them are happy for this restaurant. Price on higher side but reasonable at downtown!

Amazing food! Ate there twice in 3 days!

By Katherine R |

Such delicious food! We are vegan so we had to be careful of some of the dishes but wow was the food good! Their eggplant dish (bhegan birrtan??) and their saag were some of the best indian food I have ever had. The naan was amazing. We had the lunch buffet one day and like the food so much we came back for dinner. The food was so good I will likely find a hotel nearby for my next trip to Chicago so I can eat their again!

Great Indian food

By bden2n12 |

The food and the service are great. Also the decor is beautiful. It’s on the second floor so you may miss it unless you’re looking carefully.

Dinner

By raj |

We were impressed with the reviews. I am an indian foodie. This place is on first floor. I negotiated upstairs. We were not very hungry. We ordered Jaipuri also, and deal tadka. We also ordered nan and parrata. They told us we have to order rice. The waitress came back and said they were out of dal tadka. Who goes out of dal on Friday evening? They were not apologetic. We ordered Dahi. The food was tasty and service was good.

Palak Paneer is Happiness Personified

By Aaron VZ |

I placed a takeaway order for Palak Paneer, rice, and naan. I had a craving, it was close to my hotel, I wasn’t expecting much. When I arrived, the restaurant was lovely. Decor was great, the hostess was very friendly and directed me to the cashier for my order. Ten minutes after I had called, my food was ready. The cashier was very nice and welcomed me back in the future. When I returned to the hotel, the food was still piping hot. The Palak Paneer was amazing. I took a bite and literally felt happiness coursing through my body. It was what my soul needed. Next time I’m in Chicago, I know where I’m going for dinner, and you should too!

Nice indian restaurant

By Alex K |

Standard indian restaurant. Decent portions. A bit expensive though for an Indian - it is however situated right in the city centre. Fast and not overbearing service.

Good food but hurried service

By seacolumbus |

Read about the restaurant in the UK before reaching Chicago. The venue is 2 flights of stairs up and has been decorated as I would expect an Indian restaurant to look. We had dinner on July 1st, and while the table was fine with a window view, there was rice on the floor left by the previous occupants of an adjacent table. We had onion bhaji and keema keema samosa to start - both of which were excellent. However we had not finished these starters when the main courses arrived and crowded the table without having been asked whether we were ready - its not as if the restaurant was full with a line of people waiting. The chicken vindaloo and madras were of very good quality and the garlic naan possibly the best we have ever tasted. Everything we could not eat was boxed up for us and made a lovely picnic in Millenium Park the morning after. Its just a shame that we couldn't finish our starters before getting the main courses.

Terrible.

By Komal |

Terrible Experience! Ordered fresh lime soda, chaat and tandoori platter. And the only decent thing was the soda and I am not even kidding! The chicken tasted like they had re-heated a week old thing. They knew we were from out of town so I am guessing they didn't care what they were serving us. It was the first time my boyfriend ate Indian food and they did a pretty good job of scaring him away. Worst Indian food I have ever had in a restaurant. Oh and the server was super rude to me when I told him that the food didn't taste good.

Lovely Food

By schroff |

The Indian Garden offers nice Indian food in the heart of Chicago downtown. We enjoy visiting the restaurant for their quality entrees, but their veggie platter is not at all good.

Dinner

By Leonore S |

We had an appetizer from the daily menu which we we’re curious about, puffed lentil donuts with a yogurt sauce. New flavor combinations that were unusual but interesting. As a main dish my husband had an eggplant dish that was spicy (he asked for it) and delicious over a basmati rice dish. I ordered a lamb ragout dish recommended by the waiter that was outstanding. It was just spicy enough for me to handle while I enjoyed the meal. My husband and I shared the basmati rice dish. I definitely would go again to have dinner here.

Appearances can be deceptive.

By Hannah S |

Indian Garden was conveniently located next to our hotel and on our first night in Chicago we decided to try it out. We perused the menu and had a rough idea as to prices and what was available. The waiter seated us immediately and our first impressions of the restaurant itself were positive. It is tastefully decorated and authentic. The waitress took our drinks order followed by our food order and returned to table three times to inform us that each chosen drink for my friend was not available. Surely they should know what is in stock? Our meals arrived 10 minutes apart much to our dismay and we had to ask twice for clean cutlery because it was dirty! This put me off my meal completely and made me question the cleanliness of their kitchens. My friends chicken korma was on the bone and several pieces of chicken were inedible due to fat. It was a huge disappointment for us as we saw how busy Indian Garden was and had high hopes. Sadly, I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant nor would I return.

Everyone was Happy

By Nuzzinaples |

I love Indian food and we were away from home for a while, so I ordered three entrees (needed leftovers). Lamb Vindaloo is my go-to, so I ordered that along with Lamb Chili Masala and Chicken Tikki-Masala. I was somewhat disappointed, and yet satisfied at the same time: disappointed because the vindaloo was the least good of the three options; happy because the other two were better than I expected. The chicken tikki-masala was the best of the three. I've never had anything but exceptional naan bread anywhere, including Indian Garden. Our server was nice, but a little on the shy side. My wife ordered the chicken sagwala, which she loved.

Worst Indian food during my business trip

By Lily Griffin |

I ordered chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, rice and tandoori chicken. The chicken tikka masala was a mess. Too much spices especially turmeric powder to make it look presentable. I travel 150+ nights across the US for business and have never tasted anything disgusting like this. The garlic naan and tandoori chicken were fine. I would rather drive to Devon Ave. next time when I’m in town for authentic and reputable Indian restaurants. I would not recommend this place.

Fantastic blend of spices

By Emi |

This was one of the best Indian restaurants I have been to. The restaurant is decorated with a lot of attention to detail and the food was delicious. The spices of each indivial dish as well as the dishes among each other blended nicely.

taste and menu was very bad.

By Vinod D |

it was my first visit to indian restaurant in chicago this month. i was very excited as its been days i didnt have a good indian food however i was disappointed due to food menu and the taste. both are bad and adding to the same the price of lunch buffet is high as compared to other restaurants. here i paid 18 dollars(16+tax) however the lunch buffet at india house is 17 dollars(inclusive of tax).

I loved food here

By Uday M |

We went here along with some friends for late night dinner and ordered all south indian menu. Believe me it was awsome Dosa and chutney. Just loved it

Great Experience!

By MarciM G |

We went to dinner during Restaurant Week. The food was delicious and I can’t wait to go again. The service was great, the staff was nice and very helpful. Also, Ras Malai is my new favorite dessert.

Rice is Extra! says the Nasty Waitress

By Benzboy06 |

I was excited to see an Indian restaurant within walking distance of the hotel. It took a bit to find the restaurant as it is upstairs and the signage is not great. Also, from what we saw there is no handicap accessibility (no elevator, ramps, etc). We certainly didn't need this but there were quite a few steps to get to the restaurant and no elevator was surprising. The décor of the Indian Garden is nice and culturally correct, including the music. One of the male servers (who was not our server) was excellent. He was very friendly, asking us if everything was okay and giving us more water. Our server on the other hand, not so much. We felt out of place when she came over to our table to take our order by looking at us like we had 3 heads. We ordered 2 dishes to share and was told that rice was sold and charged separately. Surprising as rice is typically included with the vegan dishes we ordered. The Samosas were huge and could have been a meal unto themselves. We were hungry so we needed more food. While our entrees were good, with nice portions the atmosphere turned cold the longer we sat. We noticed our server asking other tables how their meals were, but not us. Actually she never came back to our table. Our check was delivered by the first server with excellent customer service. The manager, I believe, brought it back to our table. Would we go back? Probably not. The negatives outweigh the positives.

The buffet is a trap !

By Cosmopolitan811890 |

This buffet is a trap. The food isn't fresh, it's cold and the place even has dirty seats. The experience was unpleasant and I don't recommend it to anyone. It's a tourist trap.

Delish!

By saberaray |

Great atmosphere and huge buffet. Enjoyed trying a variety of foods during the buffet- price was kind of high though.

Great Indian Food

By JWR10 |

Extremely pleasant dining area, food was great, I had Murgh Jalfrezi and requested "Madras" heat. It was spot on and delicious. My wife had Tikka Masala and really enjoyed it. The wine and Taj Mahal beer was also good. It has been some time since I have had an Indian meal this good. Excellent service to round of a great night.

Avoid at all costs!

By Mike S |

My Indian friend and I were visiting Chicago last week and decided to go there for dinner. The place looks really nice and is pretty busy so we thought it was going to be great. It wasn't. First and foremost, the food was... well.. disgusting. The appetizers were tasteless, but ok - there are different tastes, right? The main course was a platter of meat. Not only tasteless again, but I am 99% sure the chicken was a leftover from the day before. Second, the service... no, I don't even want to mention it. Let's just say: avoid at all costs!!

Superb Indian Cuisine

By zeeks_eats |

Cozy, romantic atmosphere, and excellent, authentic Indian dishes. Complimentary pappadam was a nice touch. Would definitely go back.

Excellent buffet.

By L0calO |

When I am in Chicago, I always make it a pint to go to The Indian Garden. Top quality food and service at a reasonable price. Several selection on the buffet for vegetarians to chose from. I enjoyed everything on the buffet, however, my wife did not feel that it was up to the previous trip. I highly recommend this restaurant if you like quality Indian food.

Best Indian food of my life

By Sarahmlee44 |

Ok, so I haven't been to India... but I live in the SF Bay Area, where food is king. This is better than any Indian restaurant I've ever visited. The food was absolutely delicious -- delicate when it needed to be; intense heat at times... just divine. We ordered the murgh curry and the chicken was superbly moist, better than in any curry I've ever eaten. (Yes, yes, I know this review is full of superlatives, but they are all true!) We also ordered a chaat dish: Chandini Chowk Aloo Tikki, which I had never had before and it was absolutely delightful -- a surprisingly complex and balanced mixture of sharp, sweet, tangy and soothing flavors, all at once. To top it off, the setting is lovely. You can't go wrong by visiting here.

Wonderful Indian food, great atmosphere

By Warren Olfert |

This was a great experience. In the last few years, I have tried to learn more about Indian food (having a couple of good restaurants locally has really helped!). We did this as our Thanksgiving meal in Chicago and it was wonderful. We did do reservations and that seems to help, as it gets busy in a hurry. Our service was great; I wanted some advice on what to eat and the server was very helpful and spot on. At the end, the owner came by and saw us. Really an impressive place.

LUNCH BUFFET -hospital food for the patients tastes better !

By Puneet K |

We went in there for a lunch buffet and we didn't even like a single dish . The daal was not tasty ,matar paneer was too sweet, the tandoori chicken was cold and hard , noodles were oily . The Ras gulla was hard as a rock . They really should improve the level . DISAPPOINTED!!!

Just ok

By Donna K |

Was looking forward to trying out Indian Garden Restaurant as the reviews on Trip Advisor were very good. We went for an early dinner. When approaching the entrance to the building it did not look to appealing. The restaurant is on the upper floor with many stairs to climb. The restaurant entrance is nicely decorated. We ordered half Tandoori Chicken, Dal Makhani, Baingan Bharti and Tandoori Roti. The dishes come with plain Basmati Rice. The portions are big. Disappointed in the Tandoori Chicken. It was so dry. Must have been reheated possibility from their lunch buffet. We did make mention of this to the server but her answer was "Tandoori Chicken is always dry". Well yes Tandoori chicken is dry but if made properly the meat inside is moist. Just my taste buds but I did not enjoy the taste of the dishes we ordered. Something different in the spices used in their dishes that did not appeal to me.

Best for Family Style Eating

By DaBiZi |

I had read a previous review stating that rice does not come with their meals. When I ask him, this restaurant serves your food in a family style manner. They have vegetarian and vegan options. I found the fare to be about what I expected. I ordered rice, which came out in a fairly large amount. The atmosphere is pleasant and conducive for conversation. I would recommend this for small groups or small families.

Lunch Buffet

By ampm321 |

while the renovation has helped the physical appearance, quality of food is average. Lunch buffet has several very spicy dishes that will burn your gut. Been there twice but not going again.

One of the best lunch buffets in Chicago

By DukeDear |

Second time I’m here with family for lunch within the last six months. Both times the buffet was excellent. Usually the service at Indian restaurants is poor. But it’s exceptional here. I’ve been to more than a dozen Indian restaurants in Chicago. I must say this has one of the best lunch buffets in the city.

Good delivery option

By mattee_2004 |

We got delivery from Indian Garden, it was fast and the food was nice and hot, they gave us extra plates too. Try the samosas, they were tasty, the garlic and tomato naan was also very good, as was the spicy chicken.

Good food, terrible service

By Toret8 |

I live close to this restaurant and I love Indian food, so I used to come here quite often. One thing was clear from the beginning and it’s that the service was never very friendly. The issue is that I went back twice within a week and I just had enough of bad service this time The experience was both times awful. I don’t think I will go ever back. We waited for more than 15min to get the menu. Then we waived at the manager who finally came to the table. Service was absent and unfriendly. When we asked for a spoon, the waiter brought it with the bare hand without even caring about using a plate or napkin. When we finished we waived and waived for more than 15 min to get the bill and people would just ignore us. We had to stand up and pay at the cashier. I told the manager what happened and he simply didn’t react. We mentioned that it was the second time in a week where we got such a bad experience and he just continued pretending we were not there. Food is good, but you can find many good Indian restaurants in Chicago with great service. I hope the owner tells the manager to do his job more efficiently and hires more friendly staff.

Spicy and herby

By Timotej D |

I asked for non-spicy and it wasn't even mild, it was VERY spicy..thats why the 4 stars. Rice has a lot of saffron and lamb meat tastes great!

Sit near the window and enjoy people watching.

Fabulous lunch buffet. Wonderful convenient location, but you will miss it unless you know what to look for, since it is a second floor restaurant. Find the door and stairs up ( a lot of stairs!) and then you'll arrive in a lovely restaurant.

Lovely food plenty of choice off the menu the service has great too we had a lovey meal didn’t have to wait too long for food

Service poor, food average

By Eviesnowcat |

Service was really slow and hesitant. Ordered a veg thali and asked to swap out the regular rice for zeera rice but was told this couldn't be done (!) They happily swapped out the naan for a roti though. Waited 15 mins for my drink to arrive. When the food came it was ok. Nothing wrong with it, generous portion, but just average.

It was good

I'm dead scared to try Indian food due to red hot stomach upsetting spice. I had such experience during my visit to India. But despite all those harrowing experiences, I finally mustered some courage to try Indian food. Surprisingly, the Indian food here is very unlike typical Indian food. While they retained the taste, the restaurant prepared their dishes taking sensibilities of an average American stomach.

Delicious food and attentive service in a charming atmosphere

The Indian Garden restaurant is a favorite of ours in Chicago, and an easy walking distance from the red line for when we don't want to deal with city parking. The food is always flavorful and attractively prepared. The bar is well-stocked. The restaurant is attractively decorated. The restaurant is on the second floor which provides a welcome break from the sight of city traffic while eating.

Quiet, peaceful lingering dinner

What a charming and peaceful evening. We started at 5:00, thinking we would make the buffet, but finding there was no way to get to the restaurant from the street. Never fear, a call to the restaurant brought a server down, with a key fob. Down the street, into the building, up a ramp, down one hall, and another, through a door, to the elevator, then down another two halls, and we walk into The Indian Garden, a welcoming, quiet restaurant with a view of Ontario street. There was no buffet, but we didn’t argue about what the sign said downstairs, because we were too busy trying to choose our meal. They recommended a new wine that wasn’t yet on the menu, when I told them I wanted to try an Indian wine. It was called Sultry, and was a blend of Cabernet and Shiraz. It was wonderful! I’m going to be looking for it in the liquor stores. I had a bowl of clove and lentil soup. I really wanted the Mulligitawny, but had never had the other. It was light and flavorful. I also ordered raita and garlic naan, my favorite sides, along with a half order of tandoori chicken. He had a mixed tandoori grill, which came with sauce, rice, and plain naan. We ended up taking home raita, naan, and some tandoori chicken. I also tried the chum chum, which is a Bengalese dessert cooked in sugared rose water. It was a delightful light ending to our meal. Between relaxing, people watching, and eating, we were there nearly 90 minutes, never feeling rushed or neglected.

On the spicey side

Had a nice dinner with my wife and daughter. The only negative was that everything was on the spicy side. My wife loved it. It was a little much for me, but the food and flavors were wonderful.

Good Indian option in downtown Chicago

A group of us went to this restaurant for dinner. The food was very tasty and was served with style. We liked the decor too. I would recommend it to anyone who already enjoys Indian food and also someone trying it out for the first time.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE !!!

JAN 7TH 2017. We ordered Biryani to go first time and worst biryani ever ! The rice and chicken both were SUPER DRY Yuk taste . We called and complained, then they finally agreed to add credit. After few days we thought lets try again, initially they forgot about credit and had no record. I picked up Butter Paneer and they kept my credit card, I called next day and the guy was yelling on me by saying "I didn't do that". I said whosoever you are if any staff charging my card its their responsibility to return. I will go tomorrow (JAN 8TH 2017)to get my card- HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE !

Location: Quite close to lake , walking distance from Navy Pier +ve Many stairs to climb for access to restaurant -ve Downtown, good ambience and spacious +ve Hospitality : Hostess was cheerful and helped explaining to select dish to European friends +ve Food: Was perfectly well as per special instructions +ve Price: Given to location It was value for money as compared to other experience I had I similar price but much worse food

Stairway to heavenly naan.

I knew I was in the right place when u observed the restaurant was brimming with tables of Indian business men and families. The restaurant is located in what appears to be an office building. It is not well-marked- and you must venture up stairs. But it is worth the few extra staircases because one inside, you'll be met with a lively atmosphere and great food at reasonable prices. My choices were limited due to my allergy , but I really enjoyed the meal. Cheese in a spicy tomat-based sauce. Fragrant basmati, and naan. And even though I was one of the women in the restaurant , I didn't feel out of place. The service was attentive and the naan, delicious. Decor quite pleasant with touches of traditional murals. Recommend!

Excellent Food

I dined here on the evening of 2 June 2018 at 2015. I was travelling alone, as usual, on business and was particularly glad to get a reservation for one on a Saturday evening. The service was attentive from the beginning. As soon as I was seated, poppadoms were served with accompaniments. The waiter was prompt in taking my drink order and then, subsequently, the food order. I plumped for chicken vindaloo, a pilau rice and a plain naan bread. I am from the UK and am conscious that US food spicing is dialled down for US tastes. Back home, I would usually order a Madras as that is plenty spicy enough; however, I concluded that in Chicago I should opt for the hotter option. When I received my food, I was glad I had taken tis approach. The dish was tasty and well-spiced. The portion sizes for the rice and Vindaloo were fantastic and the naan was cooked exactly as I like it. I washed the food down with Taj Mahal beer and the whole experience was very enjoyable indeed. I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant and, since I am going to be in Chicago for a week, I expect to be dining there again before I leave!

Amazing Indian restaurant

By Gopinath N Pandalai |

I was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance and the decor of this restaurant. Normally, Indian restaurants in the US are very sparse and functional. This had a class to it and was very crowded on a Friday afternoon. The clientele was not just people of Indian origin, but also had a good number of locals as well. We had the buffet, which had a great spread. The starters included as Tomato Shorbet, salads and chats. The main course was the staple dal/roti-naan/subzis. The non veg offerings included a chicken biriyani, mutton curry, tandoori chicken and what looked like Tilapia fish curry. Desserts were rasagulla and gajar ka halwa. There was free chaas on offer too. The dal and chicken biriyani were the best dishes on display but the rasagulla was the canned variety and hence tasted a bit rubbery. Overall, for $20+ taxes per person this was a totally good deal. We did not order any alcohol and so cannot comment on the prices.
