A really great farewell meal

By RobandCarmen |

Went to ISA on our last night in San Fran. What a great way to end our trip. We shared the Crab Salad, which was clean and had lots of crab. A really good starter. For mains I had the Duck breast which was tender, juicy and tasty and went well with the accompanied fig salad. One of the best pieces of duck I have had. My wife had the seafood risotto, which was also tasty and well enjoyed. We took up the waitresses suggestion and shared the Flourless chocolate cake and icecream It is more like a very light souffle and was a great ending to the meal. If we ever get back to San Fran ISA will be visited again.

Pushy service, loud setting

By mattmcnick |

Highly touted but I wasn't impressed. Perhaps it is better during the warmer weather when the seating at the rear isn't undercover or portable heaters. The food was hit or miss - the corn soup was very bland but the rest of the meal was decent. For dessert our table had the chocolate cake and creme brulee, which was good. The service was very pushy.

best meal of our trip to SF

By William K |

spectacular meal in the San Francisco Marina. dungenese crab on butter lettuce, sweet and succulent grilled calimari over cannellini beans, duck confit cooked to perfection, moist inside and crackling skin outside, and halibut over a cherry tomatoe and kalmata olive remoulade. each dish showed a different side of the chef's talents. Our waiter dean guided us through aur choices and paired a great french chardonnay with the seafood and a lovely cali pinot noir with the duck, both generously poured and reasonably priced. Kudos to ISA

Slow pace of dinner unappetizing

By Judee |

We arrived at 5:30 pm for dinner with no reservations. There was only one couple at the tables and 4 people at the bar. We were greeted by the bartender and then seated after a couple minutes of waiting. We ordered from the pre-fix menu and then the SLOW down began. It took about 20 minutes for two bowls of creamed cauliflower soup to arrive. Although it was good we were disappointed that they didn't have the cauliflower and fennel soup as listed on the menu. And yes we were advised of the change when the waiter took our order. Ok, done with the soup and another 25+ minute wait for the fish dish to arrive and then 3 more minutes after that for the roasted chicken dish to arrive. Once those dishes were cleared it took about 5 minutes to get our creme brûlée. All the food was very good but the slow service was an issue. We still had to walk back to catch a concert. Over 90 minutes just felt too long as we were not having a 9 course meal. We also over heard the group next to us complain about waiting for their food. In summary, the food was very good but don't have plans after your dinner, you're going to be in Isa for awhile!

Two nights in a row!

By Lloyd T |

On our recent trip to San Francisco, we dined at Isa's twice. We had our pick of all the trendy Marina District/Chestnut St restaurants, (many of which we've enjoyed on previous visits) and we decided to go back to Isa's. Of course, on our second visit, we made sure to order different food and sit at a different table in the wonderful, tented back area. But both experiences were wonderful. The waiting staff, led by Dean, is always friendly and helpful. And the food is irresistible. On our first night, we shared perfectly cooked Sea of Cortez prawns, followed by seared scallops, which were accompanied by brussels sprouts cooked with bacon. The next night we had the Grilled Portabello with kale timbale, quinoa, red wine, onion jam & smoked cheddar polenta which made me understand why some folks love being vegetarian. We also had a deliciously cooked filet of sole with artichokes, tomato confit, zucchini, olives and basil. Both their $29.99 Prix Fixe menu and their A La Carte Menu are full of many wonderful choices. Both nights we got there at 5:30PM, so we could take advantage of their happy hour $5.00/glass wines. We love the house Merlot--yes, even with fish. Of course, there is also an extensive menu of more expensive wines if you want them.

WOW!!! Excellent service & excellent food! My Son lives in S.F. & while visiting him, I wanted to take him out to dinner. He recommended Isa telling me that he had dined here twice before and said the food was delicious. From the moment that we walked in, The staff was great and explained different menu options to us. The plates that we chose were absolutely delicious! I highly recommend this restaurant for a delicious choice when deciding where to eat in the city!

Excellent food but.......

By jkisherwood1@gmail.com |

The food is truly amazing-venue excellent but unfortunately our experience was spoilt by an altercation regarding the gratuities! We were disappointed and somewhat intimidated by our up to then excellent and friendly waiter-to such an extent that we felt unable to pass him to leave! Enjoy your evening but expect to be told how much 'tip' and pay it!

Great food!

By Amit S |

Order the Sea Bass and the oysters! I have had 2 wonderful evenings of some great dishes and accompanying wine. And if you like, you can also sit outside and watch life move by on a relaxed late afternoon. Talk to the affable Elias or his wife Sameera and am sure they will treat you real well.

Lovely food and fantastic service

By Mandy156 |

We visited here on our last night in the city. Jonathan our waiter was outstanding. Even though it was busy his attention to detail was fantastic. The food was lovely and so was the wine. Great value for money.

Lucky find!

By Kat S |

Decided not to wait 45 minute for Tacolicious around the corner and found this little gem! Woweee! We sat in the back in the covered patio and had a most delicious meal! Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. I had the potato wrapped sea bass and it was delicious! If I lived closer, this would be a regular restaurant for me!

Great service and staff

By BlubirdTraveler |

We had a really nice experience at Isa. We were asked where we preferred to sit and we chose the back patio room which was quiet, intimate and warm. The wine that was recommended was very good. The bread was delicious. We chose a variety of plates to share - the oysters, asparagus, scallops, prawns as well as the chicken and mashed potatoes were delicious. We were a little disappointed with the fish of the day and the flourless chocolate cake (but I love this dessert and so am very picky) but the vanilla bean gelato was good. But by far the most outstanding part of the evening was our waiter - he was so enthusiastic about the restaurant and the food and all of us ended up laughing and having a great time. We would go back just to be waited on by him!

My favorite spot in the Marina.......

By KCinLG |

With so many places to eat in San Francisco, I have to say this was one of my favorites. The food was really good, ambiance was on fleek, granted we were the last party to arrive at 9:45pm, and service was impeccable (thank you Priscilla). We had anyone and everyone waiting on us. Never had a dirty plate on the table or an empty glass. The manager even came by to say hello and check in on us. This is what we ordered, and ALL was delicious and generous in size. Shockingly the bill was just $160 pre tip. Corkage is included in that total and was only $26 per bottle. Butter Lettuce Salad Yellowtail Hamachi Hangar Steak Truffle Risotto Side of Brussel Sprouts Port Wine Trio of ice cream I would DEFINITELY come back again! We walked from our condo so didn’t experience parking issues, but looking at the surroundings, parking can be tight. Take an uber!

Very good food, great value: a delightful dining experience

By JKTiffin |

We just chanced upon this restaurant last Thursday and are delighted that we did. Although it looks tiny (and very smart) from the front, there is a large heated patio in the rear (still smart). Service is extremely friendly and informative: our waiter clearly loves his job and the food. Three of us split two very good value prix fixe menus and one main dish, though we really didn't need the extra dish. There was plenty of food. Salmon carpaccio (delicious, though the slices were a tad thick) and mussels to start, followed by a perfectly cooked tender flatiron steak with tasty red wine sauce and polenta-nicely crisped on the bottom- and fish with a light tomato sauce. Dessert was semifreddo (think frozen mousse) and blue cheese with fruit. The only thing lacking on the prix fixe menu was a little more variety in the dessert selection. Overall a very pleasant evening with some good food and reasonably priced wines by the glass

Super delicious food and a romantic patio

By Veronica |

What a find! We came here with my friends and we were seated in the back and they have a nice patio with heat lamps and it is very cozy. I had the best fish I ever ate. They suggested family style and we ordered many dishes but my favorite was Potato Wrapped seabass, it was crispy from outside and moist and soft inside with tangy flavors, I loved it. I loved the Risotto as well and their flourless chocolate cake was perfect! My friends ordered Creme Brulee and that was equally delicious but I am a choclate person so I loved my dessert.

Good meal at a fair price!

By Lachlan C |

Sat at the bar and had their prix Fixe dinner with a friend. There were lots of choices on the menu, and they were served promptly. Food quality was good, and they made an effort to make sure we were happy. All in all an excellent meal at a reasonable price.

Best meal I've ever had!

By John G |

We had the Salmon Carpaccio and Lamb cutlets and both were the best I have ever tasted anywhere. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was very good. The prices were not bad, not the cheapest I've had but for what we were fed, unbelievable! The portions are modest but their instructions on the menu are pretty spot on! Would come back here again and again and again!!!

Marina District Jewel

By tigerorangecounty |

First time diner at this interesting San Francisco restaurant jewel. California French twist on the menu with small plate menu which means sharing. The beauty of this type of dining is that you can try several items without settling on just one. We had a table for four and shared the Butter lettuce salad, Baked Laura chenel goal cheese (yum), seasonal fish, pan roasted range chicken, rack of lamb, flat iron steak and some vegetables. Everything we ate was cooked nicely, potatoes were incredible, spinach flavorful and the chicken was best choice from all four of us. Lively place, can be a bit loud if sitting next to locals. Make reservations and enjoy a walk after dinner in the beautiful Marina District. We did not have dessert, which now is my only regret.

Excellent food, extensive wine list

By stigos |

Wandered into this restaurant to have a glass of wine, but ended up with full dinner, and what a dinner it was! We went for the "Prix fix", a three course dinner at the reasonable price of UDS 30 p.p. The dishes are not huge, but are made to be shared. The starters, grilled calamari and baked goat cheese were tasty and well presented. For our mains we went for the seasonal fish, and angus flat iron steak, both excellently prepared; delicious! A good selection of wine by the glass made the dinner perfect. Friendly and relaxed service, and a cosy atmosphere is also a plus. Recommended!

Very nice!

What a find! Short menu but very adequate. Nice wine list. Excellent dinner in a lively atmosphere. Very good service. Overall, a very nice experience. We'll be back, for sure.

Great food, excellent service

We had a great meal at Isa, grilled calimari, Tuna ceviche, and Alaskan Halibut. The fish were cooked to perfection, and the service exceptional. Strongly recommended.

Don't Rush Me!

By thetravelartist |

You can imagine how happy I was when our server explained that all the dishes are cooked to order and might take some time. That's fine with me (us) as my usual complaint with restaurants is that they serve too fast and don't let one really savor the meal. Our reservation was for 7PM. Well, even though I was expecting to have a leisurely dinner, this was not to be. With a cocktail, apps and a main, we were out of there in less than 1 hour- really. I never felt so rushed as I did through this meal. God forbid you would put your fork down for a second and someone would come by and take your plate. We ordered a side dish of veggies to go along with our mains and they actually brought that out and served it by itself, between the apps and the main course- as if we were going to eat a plate of brussel sprouts all by itself? Really? I asked our server why was this being served while our main courses were not ready yet and she couldn't give me an answer, but she didn't take it back either. So, by the time the main courses were served, our sprouts were cold. Although the food was tasty ( lamb tenders being the better of two dishes), the experience was completely marred by the rushed service. It was clear that they were pushing to turn the table over for an 8pm reservation.

Exquisite !!

By James P |

From the outside, Isa looks like a narrow hole-in-the-wall on a side street in the Marina district, close to a corner with three pizzerias and a Chinese restaurant nearby. Don't be fooled. This is a French-eclectic five-star winner owned by a young chef who trained under Daniel Boulud in NYC and at Le Panisse in the Bay area. I'm a foie gras freak, as I've said before; his seared foie gras was marvelous, accented by poached pears which were a wonderful contrast. I asked for the baked goat cheese for dessert, even though it was listed as an appetizer; it was exquisite. Be sure you go on the Isa web site to make reservations in advance; you can usually get them on the same day, but don't wait until the last few hours. This is a small restaurant, a row of tables on one side of the entrance area, a couple of tables on the sidewalk in front, a patio in back which I did not see. I was on a solo trip to San Fran, staying at a mid-range hotel nearby, and found Isa when I went on the internet to search nearby restaurants. I had to walk only a few steps to Isa, but it was every bit worth the cross-country flight I had made to end up there for my Friday night feast. A couple more things: there is no hard liquor, beyond a few specialty cocktails, but the only white wine offered by the glass was excellent. Plus, the tab was eminently reasonable!

Best French food

By D Autumn Z |

Great ambiance, food and service!! Highly recommend the tuna appetizer and the lamb is TO DIE FOR!!!! Yummy

Nom nom certified. Best. Crete brûlée. Ever.

By humming-rye |

Started out with the lettuce salad that had a deliciously light vinaigrette to go with the candied pecan and cheese, followed by a tasty teaser - potato leek soup. The next pat if the meal - the truffle risotto and spaghetti were aaahmazing (extra brownie points for the truffle risotto - it tasted every bit as glorious as it's regal mushroomy presentation)! A word to vegetarians: you're covered. Amply covered. Deliciously covered. And did I mention the service? Impeccable! Desserts (because it deserves its own section): Apparently the chocolate cake is the rage, and of course it would be, with it's warm melting chocolate happiness and fluffy texture...BUT, the creme brûlée is still ze bomb. Crackly caramel topping capturing smooth custard delights. Just can't go wrong with that.

Very tasty fiid

By richmet |

Family dinner (3) and decided to order 2x prix fixe menu. Turned out to be plenty of food to share. Starters were ok (corn soup very sweet for our taste) but mains terrific - had the flat iron steak and chicken and both were very good. Desserts very good too. Friendly engaging waiter ensured we had a nice experience.

Consistently great food

By TriMate |

Went to Isa for date night and were not disappointed. The appetizers (fresh crab salad and tuna tartar) were excellent, fresh, delicious, and large enough to share. Note that tune is on the spicy side. The main courses were likewise superb. Highly recommended.

Wonderful food, great service

By Jamie M |

Near Chestnut Street in the Marina, this is a small restaurant, so you may want to make reservations. Though a "small plates" menu, the paella and the lamb chops were large enough portions for an entree. We also had the baked goat cheese and the salmon carpaccio. The waiter recommended all the dishes, and he was right. All were fantastic. Can't recommend it enough. you will be sitting close to your neighbor. That worked out well for us as we decided to talk to the couple next to us, they were visiting from London, and we shared drinks a great conversation.

Great dinner!

A gorgeous evening out in San Francisco and we thoroughly enjoyed the food and wine. Great quality, great ambience, great service.

Great Restaurant!

By Gurveer |

Came here on a Friday night for dinner with my family and was highly impressed by the food, service, and restaurant overall. The outdoor patio was great with a nice ambience, and there were outdoor heaters to keep everyone cozy and warm. I personally loved the sea bass and lamb chops, as both were cooked to perfection and tasted great! The staff was superb, friendly to everyone and very knowledgable. Can't wait to come back soon and try another course!

First Rate

By alan k |

Stopped in this wonderful little spot after seeing a play recently and my wife and I were delighted w the food and service. Our waiter was great. Service was efficient and friendly. I had a crab salad(outstanding) and my wife enjoyed a calamari. This was unlike any calamari I have ever tasted. Not fried but sautéed. (excellent) Fresh crab on the salad was wonderful. We had a couple of glasses of very good zin. The wine list is amazingly reasonable with most bottles at 36.00.This is unusual and demonstrates the honesty and focus on food (rather than pricey wine)at this cute little place. Apparently the chef has been there for 13 years. They take obvious and well-deserved pride in their establishment ....as they should. We will return for my birthday. We were impressed!

This is it...

By Brian F |

The Service, the Food, ambiance - Everything was absolutely top nots! The variety of the menu is fantastic along with the wine menu. You get value for the price. Try the foiegras, saffron paella, or the steak. Happy Hour is great. Will be back!

Warm and casual bistro

By Michelelabelle |

This charming little bistro was a find. It’s always tough to find a comfortable place to dine alone, but this was a lovely evening, and would also be a warm and inviting spot for a twosome. Seating in a back patio works for larger groups. I sat at the bar, and received excellent service with just the right level of attention. I had three appetizers - all excellent. Fresh oysters, an arugula salad and roast calamari. Highly recommended.

Great food, shame about the service

By Vicki O |

We tried all the vegetarian choices on the menu...the baked goat's cheese to start was devine, with tomatoes, basil and pinenuts. The mushroom risotto was probably the best I have ever tasted, large pieces of different varieties, very tasty and cooked just right. The spaghetti was surprisingly tasty, just the right amount of seasoning and herbs. We didn't try any desserts, but they were Italian rather than French. Unfortunately, the ambience of this intimate space is ruined by a bar taking up half the space, which was very noisy. The service was also quite lacking, drinks took a while and nobody followed up to see if we needed anything else or to find out how the food was. I would recommend a visit for the food, it is worth the higher prices.

Isa So Romantic

Pluses - clean modern decor, upscale -omg Point Reyes oysters so refreshing -nice selection of drinks - great waiter - crispy warm bread -saffron paella with big portions of seafood -zucchini light - flourless chocolate cake and gelato must not have had any calories it was so fluffy Areas of improvement - calamari just okay - better if grilled crispier

Great find

By FMT |

Booked last minute having read some reviews and glad we did. Feels like a locals restaurant, with the ambience of a Parisian bistro. Wonderfully fresh food and the head waiter is so passionate about the restaurant and very attentive to his customers. Highly recommend

excellent restaurant

By SIBarbour |

Lovely, intimate yet fun restaurant featuring french food. Very popular; reservations advised. Wine and beer only, but the wine based cocktails were creative and excellent. The food was delicious.

Amazing food, and awesome service

We had several starters, mainly seafood, every one of them were exceptionally good. I ate chicken with mashed potatoes, it was also really delicious. Highly recommended!

surprisingly good food in the Marina

By Stephen G |

Without a lot of pretense one of the better restaurants to be found in the Marina District. A small place with nice ambiance, a bit dark, which my wife found very romantic. The restaurant offers either a prix fixe dinner or a la carte dining. Happy hour is until 7 PM with 5 dollar drinks. No mixed drinks, only beer and wine. A nice reasonably prices wine list by the glass or bottle. Wait staff was friendly and efficient. The prix fixe dinner is 3 courses with about 6 or 7 selections in the starter and main courses and about 5 for desert for less than 30 dollars. There is some overlap to the a la carte menu with a dozen or so selections. Between the four of us we had an Arugula salad, butter lettuce salad both served well chilled and perfectly dressed with an assortment of cheese, nuts and fruits. We had a very nice diced, raw yellow fin tuna with sesame oil and avocado that was delicious and generous in its size. Sautéd calamari was garlicky and tasty. Our main courses consisted of two pasta dishes, a mahi maui fillet and my favorite a whole roasted Branzini, perfectly seasoned and cooked. A bit of work to eat but totally delicious. Deserts were good and unique: a semifreddi--half cookie and half ice cream blended together and served chilled. a cheese plate, and a grapefruit granite. All plates are meant to be shared and passed around. We had no expectations going to this spot, it was suggested by our friends concierge, we will return.

Tasty but still hungry

By travelguy21776 |

The food was really good but the portions were so small and so expensive. We left hungry. Had to go back to our hotel and order more food and drinks. Plus we felt like they were trying to get our party out of there way too fast. Drink eat leave.

Good Affordable Marina Restaurant

By Andrew H |

Isa has been open for over 15 years and while not in top form of lore it's still a really good place to get an affordable meal. This isn't cheap eats but on the lower side of San Francisco mid-range. On Sunday through Thursday (and sometimes on Fridays) they offer a $29.95 prix fixe 3-course meal. It’s refreshing that the restaurant doesn’t mince about what the deal really is as you can directly compare the prix-fixe items to their ala carte prices and decide which one makes more sense based on what you want to eat. The cuisine has strayed from French and is more Californian than not. Then again, that’s what they now claim so no surprises. While the food is not remarkable it’s well done and pretty much on solid ground with generous portion sizes. The wine list has some good selections at reasonable prices as well. Service is good though it can be slowed down by the kitchen. You can choose between inside eating and a covered heated patio. Frankly, I prefer the patio as it’s more relaxing. If you choose the patio try to get a table on the upper level and barring that a peripheral table as these feel more secluded. I’ve visited Isa several times over the years and have never been disappointed. Here it’s pretty much straight-forward tasty food at decent prices – sort of shocking considering that it’s in the Marina.

Nice Asian Fusion

By Otaytak |

A pleasant restaurant off Chestnut and Steiner (Marina area). Great food. The restaurant can get loud at times. But, the service and food are excellent!!!

FAN-FANTASTIC

By Craig M |

Food is superb. Service is even better. My wife and I had a date night dinner on a Friday evening and it was fantastic. It is highly recommended. Listed as a French Restaurant, I don't know that I would call it a traditional French restaurant. Some French dishes as well as some more "California" type offerings. But who cares what type of restaurant it is, all you need to know is it is really good and well worth the money. Decent wine list.

Good California Cuisine in a Good Ambience

By Captain_J_Spaulding |

After a long flight, we decided on Isa for a more casual first night in San Francisco and we were also interested in the menu promising of California cuisine. We were seated in the back patio, a nice spacious heated area, and ordered a bottle of wine from their varied list, which also offered several selections by the glass. Our excellent waiter, Domingo, advised that all the plates were meant to be shared so we tempered our choices accordingly so as not to be too full. We started with the Arugula Salad (very fresh, with a palate cleansing flavor aided by slices of Fuji apples, oranges, fennel and lemon vinaigrette with parmesan shavings), Grilled Local Calamari (the smaller ones were used as opposed to slices of the large calamari but were nonetheless flavorful on a bed of white beans with spices and lemon zest) and the Grilled Angus Flat Iron Steak (one of the more expensive items on the menu at $21.00 but nicely done with zucchini, roasted potatoes, moutarde verte and Bordelaise sauce). The food sizes as plated were about as large as an appetizer at any restaurant but we were fine with that as it allowed us to try another dish, the very tasty Sautéed Sea of Cortez Wild Prawns (combined with parsley, garlic, lemon and spicy lobster sauce). We scanned the dessert menu and ordered the Flourless Chocolate Cake with vanilla bean gelato after being assured it was more soufflé-like in its taste (it was indeed as light as any soufflé). A very nice evening with a good ambience, fresh food and excellent service was had for just over one hundred dollars (wine and tax included). We would definitely recommend Isa.

Big flavours, accomplished cooking

By RBrownhill |

Went here for dinner. Two areas in the restaurant. Prix fixe and a la carte overlap with some appealing dishes. Oysters ordered and never arrived and didn't chase as the rest was enough. Yellowfin tuna tartare chopped and tasty in a stack with a dressing and herbs. Very fresh fish well prepared with an amazing dressing which had sesame oil, chilli and still preserved the basic flavour yet gave you a spectrum of tastes in every fork. The honeyed walnut blue cheese and pear salad was well executed with a dressing that made seemingly bland (yet fresh) leaves come to life with a richness and a flavour which showcased the parts yet brought them together. Main courses we had pink duck and lamb. Tasty nice accompaniments and reasonable portions for 2 to share. Blanc de blanc and Riesling well rounded and did their job, we took our own red wine at a $20 corkage. Well worth a trip in cow hollow. Food is great when it is not messed about with too much, but hits flavour really hard.

Can't Wait 'til Next Time

By Harriet M |

Did you ever walk into a restaurant and were almost sure you’d like it? That’s Isa’s. Of course, it may be that it just was dry and warm on a cool, rainy December night with wet shoes and umbrella. My glasses steaming up felt good. We had just come from the Palace of Fine Arts to see the Art of Banksy—our Uber driver couldn’t find us in the dark parking lot and vice versa. So, upon arrival, we asked for the warmest table in the room and were shown one near the heater in the crowded, but noisy back room. Changing our minds, we asked for a table in the front room and settled down to discuss the show and the food. We shared the salad of butter lettuce, poached apple, candied walnuts and Pt. Reyes blue cheese. My main course was the cleverly potato-wrapped seabass with capers, peppers and tomato confit. My friend choose the seared scallops with mashed potatoes, butternut squash with bacon--we shared a side dish of Brussel sprouts with bacon and garlic (yum-yum). Couldn’t fit in dessert—maybe next time. The host and wait staff were gracious on this very busy Sunday evening.

Okay but overpriced

By Conqueror17 |

Pleasant atmosphere and friendly welcome. Food reasonable but overpriced. I also object to them adding a service charge and then expecting a sizeable gratuity.

Good food and atmosphere

We just walked in and they seated us- very friendly. The food and wine selections were excellent. We felt relaxed and unhurried, just enough bustle without loud crowd-perfect.

Could be better

By Hichem E |

Food: Online I read French cuisine, on the business card it says Californian ... Here is what we had, you decide: The crab salad was good, the salmon appetizer was lacking a bit of flavor in my opinion. Grilled calamari were tasty but wasn't all cleaned well.. We found couple of calamari cartilage. 3 lamb chops were tasty and scallops were tasty if you like lemon caper flavor. Paella is good could've been better if served in a flat pan rather.. Wine/Drinks/beer: Very limited menu, I was expecting an extensive wine list for a marina restaurant... Ah well. They only serve 3 beers, Mojito was fantastic but small glass :) Service: Domingo gave us a good service, we were the last table seated and the last to leave without being rushed. My expeditions were a bit higher for a social marina restaurant, I might go back if I hear they changed.

Overall a very nice dining experience.

By Patricia C |

The waiter was very nice and helpful with adjusting the heatlamp. Our starter was the baked goat cheese and pine nuts, very yummy; Entrees:Saffron Paella (very filling and bright flavors); Truffle risotto (delicious throughout); and Spaghetti (ok)

Fun atmosphere, tasty food.

I just attended a wedding rehearsal dinner here and we all had so much fun. The food was delicious and the special drink I tried (No. 7) was so tasty. The staff was very accommodating and the even flowed smoothly.

Went to ISA for a wedding rehearsal dinner and it was fabulous. A great variety of foods and all of them well done.

Yucky experience

By David N |

We arrived at the restaurant prior to our reservation time and were seated promptly by the host. Then we met our server. The food was somewhat acceptable but our dining experience was overshadowed by dreadful service. Bad attitude, bad manners, brusque, and likely lack of experience. He raised the wine bottle to his nose and sniffed the wine prior to pouring it. Yes, he did. That was a first for me - and only one of his annoying interactions. When we ordered, we asked to finish the appetizers before our entrees were delivered. The tables are very small and our table would soon be full of first course plates. We were not half way through the first course food when the grinning kitchen staff brought out entrees and asked "where do you want us to put these?" What an insane and inappropriate question. They took the entrees back to the kitchen where they sat somewhere for 25 minutes. We finished the first course food yet we had to wait 15 minutes for the already prepared entrees to be re-delivered. The food was lukewarm at best. So, that is what a $200 experience at Isa is like.

Friendly, fun, and fabulous

By Danielle C |

Went to Is a for a rehearsal dinner with the entire family. Not only was the food amazing, but the staff was great! They made sure, in the midst of family banter, that we each received an individualized treatment. They were fabulous.

Just ok

By 40something2008 |

We have had such a great success rate with restaurants that were well rated by TripAdvisor until yesterday. I will start with all the positives. Samira, the owner is a very nice person. She readily changed our assigned table to accommodate our larger group within 10 minutes and dd it with such a sweet disposition. Dean, our waiter was also very good. The restaurant was located in a great neighbourhood, was full of patrons and the restaurant is situated a half block from Chestnut. Great for walking around after dinner or even for a night cap or coffee. Now for the food. It was ok at best. I ordered grilled calamari followed by a mushroom risotto finishing with a grapefruit granita. The calamari was the blandest calamari I have ever tasted. They were served on borlotti beans that were also incredibly bland. No complimentary flavours at all. The flavour could have been elevated with appropriate seasoning, olive oil, black olives, onions, capers..something! The mushroom risotto was on point. Creamy with an abundant amount of mixed mushrooms & Parmesan cheese and the right amount of truffle oil. My husband had the salmon carpaccio and mahi mahi as a main. The salmon was served with a little creme fraiche, chive & green onions. Also incredibly bland. The mahi mahi was served atop mixed vegetables served over a savory broth. It was good. My fellow diner ordered a grilled portobello served with quinoa, polenta and kale. This also was incredibly bland and incredibly flavourless. The desserts were also ok. I would not recommend this restaurant.

Excellent (large) small plates

Tremendous service and food. One of my new favorite San Francisco eateries. We did the 3 course prix fixe menu and would that again.

Amazing

By Yvonne S |

Wow! What an amazing find. We were visiting San Francisco on our anniversary and wanted a special place to eat. I searched Open Table, but you never really know. But something really connected with me when I saw Isa. When we arrived I still was not sure but that all changed after the first minute. The owner greeted us and told us about the over 20 year history of his restaurant and how all key staff, the chef and more have also been there over 20 years. Moments after we were seated, Dean came to tell us about the menu and what were the best things on the menu. We ordered them. The Dungeness Crab salad and Potato Wrapped Seabass. There really are no words to describe how amazing those dishes were. Just amazing. And the service matched. All I can say is you live or visit San Francisco, this is a must visit.

Very good food, service OK, ambience weather dependent

By daggertravel |

foie gras, arugula salad, salmon carpaccio, rack of lamb all very good; braised short rib OK, service friendly but can be spotty; ambience: small inside, back outside depends on SF weather, when tent awning closed ambience not great; when open it is better. may return

A Real Treat

By gbread_7 |

This is such an elegant treat... Having dinner at Isa is a lovely way to pamper one's self. Their prix fix menu is hard to beat. I have eaten here many times, and hope to return many more times!

still the one

By elms64 |

returned to Isa after dining there two years ago and, based on informal ambience and quality of meal, it continues to be one of my all-time favorite restaurants. You cant go wrong with any seafood selection but the Butterfish was exceptional.

Decent food for a neighborhood restaurant

By Wildcat86 |

It's a nice restaurant and service was quite good. Food was OK with a few outstanding dishes, like the sea bass wrapped in potato. Wine selection was good. We sat in the front room and it was very hot, the kitchen adds to the temperature so if you like it cooler ask for a table in the back. I don't know that we'd rush back here and I'd probably pick Bistro Aix over ISA if you are looking for a neighborhood restaurant.

Good food, wonderful service

By MsStarV21 |

We went on New Year's Eve, so it was a prix fixe menu. The options were still outstanding, including a Baked Laura chenel goat cheese dish, the truffle risotto and creme brulee. The service was great, very quick and thoughtful. The price was reasonable. The atmosphere of the main section of the restaurant is quaint and warm. The patio though heated and spacious, was not very attractive and had an unusual smell on arrival. In the future, I would certainly request a table in the main dining area for improved ambience.

Best family restaurant

By Ncp |

My daughter just had a birthday and we decided to celebrate her birthday with a French cuisine. We visited ISA for the first time and were impressed with the friendliness of the staff and the hosts. The menu was appetizing and we ordered sea bass and scallops. Both were extremely well seasoned and perfectly cooked. I have not had seafood cooked to this fashion in San Francisco yet. The entrées came out quickly and looked like a work of art. At the end of the night the host came over to my daughter and wished her happy birthday and made us feel at home. Great place to visit have dinner. Thank you ISA for making my daughter’s birthday to remember.

Great food, dessert and service not so much.

By MichelDavidoff |

Visited with a friend, every item we had was perfect! Great arugula, tomatoes and tuna appetizers. Each item was picked at the perfect ripeness stage and peak flavor. The main courses or bigger plates were amazing. The Potato wrapped Seabass was incredible - how did they make the potatoes on the verge of crispy and the fish just perfect? Simply amazing! the rack of lamb was also very very good. The service did not match the food. Not once were we asked if the food was good/right. The chocolate dessert was simply disappointing. Before leaving I was chatting with one of the owners who offered to re-do the dessert however I declined that offer. I would go back with hopes of better service and dessert and the same amazing dishes.

Great atmosphere, good food..

By Travel_Addict_Cyprus |

Had it not been for the delay in us getting our food, i would have given this place 5 stars. We walked in and were seated right away. Our waiter was courteous and friendly. We got an arugula salad with cheese and mandarins to start with, and it was good. The kids got the potato & leek soup and they liked it too. After that we had to wait a VERY long time until our main dishes came out. Not sure why; did our waiter screw up the order? Did the kitchen screw up the order? I don't think I ever had to wait that long before.. For our main dish, I got the seafood paella and it was absolutely delicious! The kids got the pan roasted range chicken with mashed potatoes and really liked it. In the end i got a creme brule, which was tasty but way too small. They had a heated patio in the back, beautifully decorated with poinsettias and Christmas lights. The paella was about $28, the chicken was $22, the salad was $11.

Great food, chaotic service, very noisy room

By ldt43 |

The strength of Isa is its excellent kitchen and reasonable prices...a bottle of good red house wine $34. Fresh Point Reyes oysters @$2 were superb as were the seared scallops and “ris de veau”. Servers are very personable but too few staff to handle the number of tables. First two courses arrived in good timing but a very long wait for dessert and coffee. Second order of oysters never arrived. The back tented room is fun but extremely noisy. If you are a couple, request a table in the quieter and smaller front room. Larger groups...make your own noise in the larger back.

Sharing dishes

By GrandTour23094148737 |

Our server explained the "small plates" concept of ordering & sharing so we ordered a variety of dishes and it worked nicely. It's a warm and welcoming place, quiet enough for talking, but with a buzz. Server was attentive, food was nicely spaced. Seared scallops and the crab/avocado salad were especially delicious.

Highly Recommended and Aptly So

By MadMaxie40667 |

Raymond at the Travelodge at the Presidio recommended this restaurant as it was within easy walking distance. He showed us the menu which included duck, one of my favorites, and potato encrusted sea bass, one of the wife's favorites. The restaurant is very attractive and the food was great. If there were to be a small complaint it would be that the service was so good as to be obtrusive at times. However, we were told by our waiter that due to the Giants being in the World Series the crowd wasn't as heavy as it would be normally at that hour. Perhaps that is what led to this over-attention if you will. Great place.

Passon for food

By 347robertc347 |

Isa Restaurant is in San Francisco's Marina District and is an unassuming, narrow hole-in-the-wall from the outside but has a passion for food on the inside. It features small plates and encourages diners to select two or three dishes for the table to share. We enjoyed two sumptuous salads. The first with crab and avocado featured the crab's fresh, sweet meat and avocado on a lettuce leaf seasoned delicately with a bit of lemon. The second, an heirloom tomato salad, burst with flavor. The tomatoes tasted like they were just picked. We also enjoyed sea bass wrapped in a thin, crispy potato wrapping with light broth, capers and chopped tomato. It is a house speciality and well worth the somewhat steep price. The other dish was a halibut special. The fish was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, bordering on being overcooked. We also had a corn side dish that was a wonderful accompaniment to the meal. The tender, sweet corn was freshly shaved from the cob and gently cooked with shallots and a hint of garlic. Service was exceptional, a gentleman who had been with the restaurant for 9 years and exuded enthusiasm for each dish that came from the kitchen. The dining area opened up at the back of the establishment into a tent-like area with strings of lights hanging above. A meal at Isa is more than a chance to stave off hunger, it's a delightful experience.

Wonderful meal with wonderful service!

By leadore |

My husband and I stay at the Cow Hollow Motor Inn in the Marina district and found Isa’s just almost next door. What a find! Wonderful, warm staff seated us and explained that the plates are generally served family style so you can try more than one menu item but they would certainly serve it differently if we wished. So glad we decided to try that because my husband ordered the sea bass in a potatoe crust that was out of this world! Wonderful sauce!! The shrimp appetizer was also top of the line as was the flourless chocolate cake with gelato. To top it off, both waiters came to say goodbye and invite us to return soon. Just a little extra thing, but meant so much. We are returning the end of this month and have already made our arrangements with the hotel to coincide with the times Isa is open during the week.

Good combination of food and value

By Gamocha |

SF is a great city for food and ambiance, but it's expensive. Isa will please on all accounts, except perhaps for atmosphere. The It's hard to pin down the menu--a bit French bistro, some risotto, nothing too self-consciously leading edge or complicated. Just good food, good service, comfortable, and not fiercely expensive. Great for a couple or a large party.

What a gem of a restaurant

By mackanna |

I went to this restaurant two nights ago with a friend and was so pleasantly surprised. Very civilized, no television so it’s old-school where you actually can relax. The wait staff is terrific and the ambience is romantic and dare I mention the food? It is off the charts so there’s no reason not to thoroughly love this place.

My new go to Dinner spot in the City!

By Julieanne H |

I can’t believe I’ve never heard of ISA! I thought I knew all the best places to eat duck breast in the city, but I had somehow missed this gem! The wait staff you’re wonderful and the food was beyond expectation, Every dish was perfectly prepared and flavors were magnificent! I highly recommend the calamari which is grilled to perfection and actually Accidentally pairing it with the heirloom tomato salad (a separate dish) was a perfect selection. My husband sea bass Was prepared to perfection. My duck breast was so flavorful and I’m wanting to book ISA for my next trip to the city. The only complaint I have about this restaurant is The timing of the dishes. It seams like they must have limited burners/ oven space in the kitchen as the spanBetween the dishes can be lengthy. Therefore if you’re planning on having one person eat a dish at the same time as another person eats a dish, you may be disappointed. The waiter explained Ahead of time that the dishes were meant to be shared however we didn’t want to share a main courses. TIP: If you desire to have two dishes served at the same time make absolutely sure to tell the waitstaff. The food was so good! You must give this place a try!!!

Excellent food - neighborhood vibe- great prices

By rj111 |

I have eaten at Isa for a decade. The food is always reliable, tasty band priced right. Those three don't usually go together, but ISA makes it happen. Some favorites are Honey grilled calamari Duck breast Risotto Truffle spaghetti Roast chicken Sunday - Thursday prix fixe for $35 Can't be beat Take uber as parking is almost impossible Don't pass ISA by

First Time Charm

By Annabella27 |

What a lovely dinner! We had decided to walk around the Marina district in SF on a Friday night and just pick a restaurant without a reservation. We came across “Isa” on Steiner between Lombard and Chestnut. We had an arugula salad that was absolutely delicious. Then we had the Halibut. It has to be one of the best preparations we’ve ever had. Every thing about it was perfect! The waiter Jonathan was handsome and gracious! We will be back.

Dinner at Isa

By Ruth K |

Visited this restaurant in the Cow Hollow area of SanFrancisco. It is best to have reservations. There are 2 choices for dinner, a la carte small plates or a set price 3 course dinner. We chose the 3 course which was excellent. I had asparagus as a starter, halibut entree and the goat cheese for dessert. The service is excellent and happy hour lasts until 7 which allowed for a lovely red glass of wine with dinner.

Very tasty good food

By Comaderu |

We enjoyed so much the lamsrack, duck breast, steak, wine, belgian beer, semifreddo ameretto, chocolate and vanilla dessert. Isa has very good cooks! Everything is very tasteful.

YUMMY

By 4everjung |

You never quite what to expect during all the COVID-19 conditions imposed by the state...Isa has it dialed in! We sat out on the sidewalk and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. My husband and I shared a bottle of wine, some oysters on the half shell and the crab salad. The service was attentive. My only complaint is that the oysters were a bit small. Everything else was spot on. Please when in San Francisco, please support the businesses.

Very pleasant evening

By Lev1234 |

This place has the comfortable, relaxed, intimate and not too loud atmosphere that draws us to a restaurant. Enjoyed everything, Especially the Brussels sprouts with bacon and the mushroom side dish. Nice selection of good wines by the glass.

Great food for a great prize

By mgr600 |

The best deal in town as for the Fixed Menu at $29.99, three course meal with almost the same dishes as a la carte. This menu is available from Sunday through Thursday and sometimes on Friday during certain months. The happy hour has a good selection for Soju cocktails (Korean) and house wines.

Tasty but small portions

By BdMorons |

The back patio is nice. Probably the most fun service I have ever gotten at a restaurant however it was hard to miss the slow delivery of food and drinks. I was impressed with the relatively low mark up on some pretty good wines. I can't award 5 stars due to the small portions.

Wonderful small place!

By mizzelle |

We had a delightful meal here.....great selections, perfect portions and overall a wonderful meal. Our first meal on a recent trip to San Francisco and it perfectly set the tone.

Superb food

By Patricia S |

We really enjoyed the ambience and attention to detail. The sea bass and rack of lamb were superb. Highly recommend a visit!

Excellent price fixe menu

By Jeff G |

The family was in town and we had reservation on Sunday when the price fixe menu was available. Nice selection of dishes. Not a large restaurant, but the food was well done. We had a little bit of issue with the pacing of one of the dishes- mussels, but everything was tasty. Service was solid and the wine choices quite reasonable.

Super host

By RAM360 |

This is has to be for me one of the most important reviews for myself. This is a trip of a lifetime for me to San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. I have now accomplished exactly that We have found this restaurant along the way after visiting all the areas we needed to As we’re walking around,we found a gentleman by the name of Hoolio outside of the restaurant who works there. We popped in without knowing what kind of food menu they have. I’m so thankful that I was invited in to have a look . Food in this place is out of this world & mind blowing . Our host is the most professional sincere person that I’ve met. He is so passionate about the restaurant and the food that he serves every single detail is outlined how it is cooked & served the background & knowledge is second to none I knew when I was speaking to him that I was in the right place and would not have any trouble finding good food. He suggested all the different specials of the day and we went with them a starter and main course and side each with a couple of specially made cocktails and lemonade. Starting off with yellow fin tuna, some fresh bread with butter was just beautiful. We also had scallops with beautifully cooked seabass and amazing halibut. On the sides we had the most amazing crispy baby potatoes steaming hot,you can find this with a side order of freshly made sweetcorn. I cannot recommend this place enough You must visit it if you’re local to the Oakland area I thank my host for keeping us entertained while we were there he was exceptional from his mannerisms his skills & his expertise which are truly amazing & he makes great Mocktails most certainly service with a wonderful smile Also giving us the best food to remember this trip by I will add my collection of pictures to share with you.

Great food, great ambience

By Michele Q |

My friends and I happened to be in SF during Dine About Town and am so, SO glad we chose to come to Isa. I cannot stress how amazing it was and how friendly our server was. To top it all off, instead of 3 courses, we got 4 (and the portions were very generous)! It also had a lovely ambience. Our server (I really wish I remembered his name) was extremely helpful with giving us a rundown of the wine list, as well as the menu. Unlike other restaurants, the options were plentiful for each of the 4 courses. For wine, we ended up getting a bottle of Cederberg which was delicious. As for the food, I ended up taking the restaurant up on the $1 oyster special. Because there were 5 of us, there wasn't too much overlap in our orders so was able to try a lot of the different dishes out. My favorites have to be the yellowfin tuna and the salmon carpaccio. The seared scallops were very yummy as well. By the time the short ribs were served, I was so stuffed but I couldn't stop eating. The meat was so tender that it fell right off the bones. I'm pretty sure I still dream about this meal and wish that it were closer. But definitely will be a must-stop spot if I ever find myself back in SF!

Consistently delicious and charming!

By MHendoSanFrancisco |

The only problem with writing this review is that I'm afraid this restaurant may get too busy to accept my sometimes last-minute reservations.. Isa is consistently delicious. The dishes are served family style. Some of my very favorites are the risotto with mushrooms, butter leaf lettuce salad, corn soup, flank steak, the fish is always good. All the vegetables are great- I usually get the mushrooms, zucchini. The wine list is great. I don't have the wine list in front of me, but there is a cabernet-franc on the by-the-glass menu..soo good. All you need is a table in the back (important- very charming) with a glass of this wine and the menu previously mentioned. The front of the restaurant has a very nice atmosphere, but the back is my favorite. It is tented and there are little white cafe lights lining the ceiling. It's unique for San Francisco and completely lovely. I tend to go there with my family on Sunday nights, but it is a great date location or casual night out with friends spot too! They also have particularly personable and helpful waiters. The wait staff has been there for a long time, and they are the types who might come pour you an extra half glass of wine "on the house" just to be nice. Really love this place.

ok

we had an average meal here, certainly had better chop and salad at home, food was greasy, liquor was over priced

Isa is wonderful

By Siena-Descendant |

Isa is just west of Fillmore and is in the Marina district, but so far west it might as well be in the Presidio. The neighborhood is very trendy and restaurant/bar heavy. Isa's somewhat obscure facade in the midst of this food-lover's haven is far surpassed by its warm and inviting interior, with a walk-by kitchen resembling many a charming restaurant in Paris. The menu is fantastic. It can be used for an evening of tapas plates, with its array of hors d'oeuvres, or for a prix fixe menu that is offered, or an a la carte 3-4 course meal. I was unable to resist trying it all, having three of the hors d'oeuvres, and then the duck breast for a main course. Going from asparagus soup du jour, to baked goat cheese, fois gras, and huckleberry and wine reduction sauce for the duck--all with perfect wine pairings--made for an unforgettable meal and evening. This is a place to return to in San Francisco.

The staff was knowledgeable

By Olivia Adams |

I was craving some elegant French cuisine with a California twist, and Isa Restaurant was the perfect choice. The Dungeness crab salad was fresh, light, and full of flavor. The staff was knowledgeable about the menu, helping me pick the best wine to pair with my meal. I’ll definitely be back for more!

perfect

By Bluma F |

We walked from out hotel and were able to get in on Saturday night around 7pm..just missed the happy hour but were glad to get in. If you want it a little quiet sit in the front section. the portions were perfect and tasted delicious..waiters were wonderful..Seabass and Iron steak to perfection.

Dinner in a relaxed atmosph

By Philip C |

We visited here on a personal recommendation The food was excellent, the services was second to none (thanks Domingo!) The wind choice was good quality and varied Food portions were not excessive, and the quality was spot on!

Great meal, wine and service

By Bryan P |

On our last night in San Francisco we jumped in a cab and asked our driver if he could recommend somewhere for a great finishing dinner. He was quick to recommend Isa. We had no reservations but were seated quickly and were served a glass of wine while waiting although it was only about 10 minutes. The menu was diverse and easy to navigate. We all had something different and sampled each other's dinner. The wine was paired and the meals were incredible. The service was excellent as was the wine selection. We definitely recommend Ida and will go back to enjoy again.

Creation!

By Robert S |

We have been here several times. Interesting, creative food that is designed to be one's meal or shared. Great professional wait staff. Casual atmosphere. Accessible location. There was a noisy group next to us but they eventually drank too much and left after which we had a level of noise in which we could talk. Highly recommended

Great food, great service

By Saimonara |

My girlfriend and I went for dinner to Isa last night and we were very pleased with the amazing service and delicious food. We got there at happy hour and enjoyed a couple of soju cocktails and then shared two prix fixe accompanied with some wine. The shiitake risotto was amazing as well as the variety of cheeses and other dishes. Highly recommend this place!

What a delightful surprise

By Willa C |

Interesting selections; prepared to perfection. Nothing too heavy, nothing over prepared; best calamari I've ever had. WONDERFUL portobello/quinoia/arugla entree; prix fixe menu a terrific bargain. Quaint, different, definitely a California French cuisine experience. Went on a Sunday night, no problem finding parking right around the corner.

Fabulous Dining Experience

This restaurant is over-the-top fabulous in every way. We loved everything about it: service, food, ambiance. You will not be disappointed.

Like home made food , very good

By elisabethle |

The system of sharing plates is always very nice , you can taste more dishes . The food we ate was a mixture ofCalifornian, French , Spanish and Italian , just very good ! Service was very friendly and excellent ( Luis ) and the wine he suggested was also great . One thing : it is quite noisy as most restaurants now .... Why do we have to endure this ? We will be back on our next visit to SF !

Great Food

By glutenfreegirl236 |

We went there for dinner and the food was amazing with exceptional service. I was amazed at the variety of gluten free selections available. The food is served family style and there was 6 of us in our group so we got to quite a few appetizers and entrees. Delicious! The back patio area was nice and had overhead heaters which kept us comfortable. In a nice area of the city. Easy to find.

Tasty small plate find

By Tim B |

After a long day of sampling nibbling local street fare and wine tasting, we decided to try a small plate option for dinner. We were very pleased to try the food at Isa. The grilled calamari and paella were outstanding. The wine choices featured some local choices without the huge price point. If we were interested in a full dinner, a good choice is their price fix menu offering an opportunity to sample many of their dishes at the table. Plan to return soon as this is a definite repeat.

Lot's To Share

By MissMem |

Our waiter did a great job suggesting how we order. Many of the plates were for sharing, so we followed his plan. We order 14 delicious and well presented combinations of appetizers and main courses for seven people. These varied offerings were the right amount for all.

Jewel in Marin

Had a great service and delicious food. We got a great advice for wine choice and appetizers, I was amazed with quality of chicken. Beef was undercooked. Desert was crispy and not too sweet .

Loved my birthday dinner here!

By Roshlynn |

Location: In the heart of the marina district! No parking lot, but hey it's SF right? What can you say Customer Service: We were instantly seated since we did have a reservation and although we were 10minutes late due to parking issues they were welcoming still! We were seated and kindly greeted by our server who was so sweet! He was very informative of everything on the menu and he had a sense of humor which is always a plus! Apparently he's been with the restaurant for quite some time and you can tell her does love his job! It's very rare that you come across people that actually love what they do and it shows through him. I believe his name was Dean, I am sorry I'm bad with names but what I know is that he is this older khmer gentleman (Cambodian) and he is just all smiles, I'm sure you wont miss him if you come across him! Decor: I didn't get to look around the restaurant but as you approach it, it's very inviting! We were seated in the outside patio which I absolutely LOVED, the atmosphere can be thought of in different ways. One it is romantic for all the lovebirds that come because although it is outside it is covered by a tarp and there are heated lamps and the lighting is dimmed but very romantic! For all the groups that come for birthdays or other occasions it's also a an inviting area to just have a good time with good company and have good food! Presentation of Food: The portions are fair and you will leave very full! How did the food taste?: We did the prix fixed menu! We were full and everything was great! 1. Mussels and Calamari for appetizers! The mussels and the sauce were so good paired with their bread. As for the calamari I loved it! Don't expect the fried calamari this is grilled I believe with olives and white beans. Everything was good! 2. I had the steak which was cooked medium rare and the veggies that came with it were perfect! My bf had the chicken and although some people on yelp didn't like it what I can say is that if they replaced the pieces with all chicken thighs it would be better (it comes with chicken breat and a small chicken thigh) Although it was skin was seasoned well and it was crispy so that was a plus! 3. The grapefruit granite was a good choice for dessert because it does clear your palet after that if you order the semi amaretto it's the perfect ending to a wonderful meal! Overall Experience: They came out singing happy birthday which was very sweat and had a candle in the semi amaretto plus they gave me a small personal glass of prosecco on the house. Loved this! Would I Come Back?: Yes!

Bouley without all the cream

By Anon |

This lightened-up version of French cooking hits the spot in so many ways. The food is all well sourced and the cooking is delicious. Most importantly, though, they have segregated the majority of the kitchen as gluten-free, which makes it one of the finest restaurants around where people with gluten sensitivities can eat. (People with celiac should evaluate their own specific situations, since limited bread and pasta are available; however, the kitchen is open and we noticed the bread was well segregated.) We particularly liked the lobster broth, the scallops, the shrimp, and the steak, but the standard was consistent across the menu.

Best service ever!

By Pjam_00 |

Just finished eating here based on the reviews from this site and I must say we received the best service I have ever received. It was my wife, my 18 month old son, and myself and we never had an empty glass or bread bowl. When my son began to act out they brought out some treats and they always had a smile on their faces. The service was so great that it almost overshadowed how great the food was. I almost never leave reviews, but this place was amazing!! Don't leave SF without a visit.

Excellent dinner with friends

By Denielle A |

A group of 8 of us visited Isa on a Saturday night during SF Restaurant week and had a wonderful time. We made our reservations over 2 weeks in advance and was able to get an 8:15p reservation which was a bit later than we'd like to have dinner but we opted for it as we wanted to try the restaurant out and were looking for French cuisine. We met an hour before the reservation at Nectar Wine bar conveniently located next door. The atmosphere where we were seated was lovely. We had a table on the patio which was covered and had heat lamps so it was pleasant and not chilly. Our servers were very cordial and attentive. They even spoke some French. Each plate we received was delicious and not one of us had a complain. They were well prepared and tasty. I had the Butter Lettuce salad and thoroughly enjoyed it - particularly the candied walnuts and blue cheese. For the second course I had the Baked Goat Cheese with basil pesto and pine nuts which was delightful. I was pleasantly surprised with this one. For the main I had the Risotto and it was very flavorful but not overpowering in any one flavor. For the fourth course I had the creme brulee and it was perfect to finish. The only one thing that wasn't so great was that although we had an 8:15p reservation we were not seated right away and had to wait approximately 10 minutes due to the party prior to us not wanting to leave. Other than this minor point, it was a fantastic dinner experience.

Scrumptious as always

By Pacita D |

After visiting SF MOMA, members of my family said they were hungry. I called Isa and made a reservation --- imagine my surprise when they called me by my first name (they have a record of how often I dined there :) To start, I ordered two servings of foie gras which we split up among ourselves, and we all agreed the foie gras was exceptional and a good deal because they were more generous servings at Isa, not to mention incredibly good. We even ordered more of that delicious brioche. All of us were enticed by their wonderful prix fix menu. My appetizer was a large bowl of mussels --- again, quite a generous serving that elsewhere, it would have been the main course. Among us, we shared salmon carpaccio, potato and leek soup, grilled and spiced calamari as appetizers. Not a bite was left as we all enjoyed the first course. Dinner; roast chicken, fish of the day, truffle risotto, angus flat iron steak which we all passed around for tasting. Final course: goat cheese with star anise honey and candied walnuts, grapefruit granite (sorbet), semi freddo amaretto (creamy gelato and amaretto cookies). Needless to say, there was absolutely nothing left on our plates as we all happily gobbled everything. Incredible value, scrumptious meal. Loved everything about this little place in Marina District. My guests were quite impressed and one of them said he loved it so much he would want to go back soon.

Great French food at reasonable price in SF.

By DHRUVIN |

What a hidden gem. Exceptionally Great food, especially Sea-bass and Lamb. Prices are cheap for SF. They have nice patio with heaters. We loved the food and the patio. Our server, asian guy was hilarious. We had good time. We will be back.

Eat here, the food is great!

By Ljgracie |

I had dinner at Isa on a Sunday with three friends and we had a wonderful time. We all picked from the prix fixe meal which gives choices of starters, mains and cheese or dessert. . I had the salmon carpaccio starter, the flat iron steak and ended with aged goat cheese drizzled with honey. Everything we ordered was great and there was plenty of food. There are a lot of great choices for the small plates and one could easily make a meal out of them. There is a bar menu with several starters, cocktails and glasses of wine at $5 if you order before 7pm, really a great deal! The atmosphere is comfortable and the place was very busy so it was a bit loud. The service was friendly and the waiters were helpful with describing the menu items when we had questions. They were a little slow in clearing our plates when we were done. Next time I'm in the Marina, I'll go back for more!

Wonderful celebration

By Mary M |

Went with a group of family and friends to celebrate several birthdays. Everyone agreed that all of the cocktails, appetizers, entrees, sides and desserts were excellent - I thoroughly enjoyed the hamachi starter and sea bass entree. Cozy ambience and very attentive staff - would definitely plan a dinner at Isa again!!!

Terrible experience - beware

By Kendra C |

We had an absolutely awful experience at Isa after holding our rehearsal dinner there - the owner, Sam, robbed us of $1000. BEWARE! We saw reviews warning about scams here and should have paid more attention. We put down a $1000 deposit months before our event that was to be credited on our bill. At the end of the event, the $1000 was never credited back. We assumed this was an oversight, and reached out to Sam to correct it, but he proceeded to gaslight us an insist that we "should be grateful" for all the work he put in and admonished us for "caring about more money" than all his efforts. It has turned into such a nightmare and looks like we will need to go to smalls claims if we ever want to see our money again.

Hidden Gem

By NY2TOGO |

We were tired and hungry when we arrived in SF. Our hotel was near Chestnut St. and we decided to go back to Isa, a restaurant we had been to two years ago. It is not on Chestnut, so it is kind of hidden on a side street. We were seated immediately and greeted by the manager or owner (not sure). He was helpful and friendly as was the whole staff. The dishes are served family style and everything we ate was delicious! The heirloom tomato salad appetizer and duck entrée stood out, but everything was tasty. The service was efficient and pleasant. Next time we will request a table in their outdoor dining area! I would definitely recommend Isa to anyone staying in this area of SF.

Great serviceand great food.

We arrived in San Fran to whisked off to Isa. The service was prompt and the food was fresh and above expectations. A real treat.

Fixed price menu is great

By jmichaelslocum |

We had a great 4 course meal from soup to dessert. The restaurant started with a great bread, then on to soups which were "okay" (not bad, but not up to the rest of the meal). Next we had the mussels -- which were super and very fresh in a great broth, and the dungeness crab salad which was delicious. We then shared sole and short ribs, both of which were phenomenal and quite generous in portions, with great veggies and starches appropriate to each. Finally, we had the creme brulee and a semifreddo (kind of a gelato with bits of cake mixed in). Reasonably priced for a large dinner and with perfect service, prompt without being overbearing Nice atomosphere, not too formal, but not loud and frenetic. We were able to be served without reservations, but it was a weekday night and reasonably early. We travel a lot and go first for the food wherever we are, so we can say that this was definitely one of the better finds anywhere in the country.

One good dish

By Mary L |

Liked the location. Menu sounded interesting but there is a "bait & Switch" component. Give you two menus, one Prix Fixe and one ala carte. Waiter pushed ala cart and talked almost constantly. Fish lovers, husband ordered fish wrapped in potato slices. Delicious. Perfectly prepared. Paella was just rice with tomatoes, couldn't taste any saffron, which is essential ingredient, piled with local clams, a few shrimp and tasteless mussels. Haricot Verte side dish was very good so that was mostly my meal plus tastes my generous spouse gave me of his fish.

innovative and delicious

By Kirk E |

Forget the trendier listings: Isa delivers new Asian cuisine with terrific imagination and without the usual San Francisco pretentiousness. The seafood here is some of the best to be had in the city. A yellowfin tuna appetizer comes stacked with avocado, seaweed and nouri with sriracha sauce. The sea bass is deliciously wrapped in thin-sliced potatoes, and the delectable scallops are accompanied by fava beans, tomatoes and corn. Portions here are family style, so two dishes per person make a more than satisfying meal. Super-efficient service and a comfortable outdoor patio combine with the cooking to rank Isa among the city's culinary highlights.

Wonderful

By C L |

The concept (tapas that you can share) is nice. The food is excellent. Not american at all. Light and with a lot of subtile flavours.

Food wasn't bad. Service wasn't bad.

By Peter L |

If you read the web site, you would think that this place is ran by Luke Sung. But after eating there, I'm starting to wonder. It appears that Isa has changed hands around 2010, but all the framed newspaper clippings and web site are making it sound like Luke Sung runs the place. Anyway, the food is decent. Instead of following the server's "family style" suggestion, we each ordered our own appetizer and main course. All are very good portion size and well presented. I had the Yellowfin Tuna which is a tartare with avocado and a bit of spice. The main course is what they call a "lamb tenders". It's just medium rare on the inside on a bed of zucchini and olives. The foie gras is a sizable piece larger than a credit card. The pairing with a piece of brioche and grilled peach is interesting and not traditional. The creme brulee is just okay. The back patio is well covered and is not as noisy as the bar area up front. It's actually quite pleasant...not as horrible as some other reviews suggested. Figure about $50/person plus drinks for 2 course a la carte.

Rehearsal Dinner party

By DAN S |

Hosted Rehearsal Dinner party for 65 guests and they made it a memorable experience. we sat in the back area with twinkling lights. we chose 4 courses and their food was amazing. our server Dean was very good and attentive. we enjoyed their cocktails and Toulouse Pinot. We will definitely be back and highly recommended.

Great food but service felt rushed

By Traveleraz51 |

Ate here on New Years Eve and enjoyed the 4 course meal. Our only complaint was that the food was served so quickly. The waiter was cordial and attentive but there was no time between courses. They served the next course as you were taking the last bite of the previous course. We finally asked the server to hold the dessert for about 20 minutes. Not what we'd expect from this type of restaurant with the price of the meals.

Cute

By Aashna25 |

Cute restaurant. Good wine, good food. Everything is family style. Its small though, so try to make reservations before going.

Fun and comfortable place

By Neil S |

Looking for a comfortable neighbor place, and Isa delivers. We were a party of 6, one of us with gluten and food allergies. Isa was supposed to be sensitive to that. They absolutely were and could not have been more accommodating. Service was fantastic, warm, helpful, efficient and friendly. Of the 6 dishes, the risssoto with truffles, spaghetti and lamb were top notch. The calamari not so much. Goat cheese and seabass dishes were very nice, but not outstanding. Deserts were good. Service and overall experience, rate a second visit. Food good, but given choices in SF not enough.

Scam for events

By Zach C |

Beware of scam for events — the manager Sam stole our $1000 security deposit. Even with the promise of a "security deposit which will be fully credited", he refused to return it because he "made less money than anticipated." He was extremely inconsiderate and rude, and we will have to settle this in small claims court. We read the previous reviews about his scams and went ahead with the event anyways, but were disappointed to learn that it would happen to us as well. Just know that if you give him any money, it is gone for good. It is a shame because this was a beautiful event space, with good food and a nice wait staff. We were left with an extremely bitter taste in our mouth though, and would recommend skipping Isa altogether to avoid this experience.

Extremely rude manager

By JosephSFO30 |

We were so excited to return to ISA again for dinner on 1/30/19 and had an early reservation at 5:30pm. Upon arriving at the restaurant, we noticed the manager was giving a hard time to the party before us (they were Asians). After I checked in, we (some Asians) were being seated at a table in the hallway connecting the dining room and the outdoor seating area. Right after we got seated, the next couple (Asians) got seated right next to us in this awkward alley again. We immediately informed the manager that we would like to be seated elsewhere since the table was in such an awkward area that is not ideal for dining (everyone staff and customer will be passing you). Instead of changing us to a better table (the restaurant was again nearly EMPTY at this time), the manager rudely told us that we had to sit there ,or else, leave. What an attitude! Even the waiter was trying to give us a different table! Obviously, we would love to take our business elsewhere and left the restaurant without hesitation. Being a loyal customer of the restaurant since they first opened and having recommended numerous people to the restaurant over the years (I was just there 2 weeks ago), I will never support this restaurant in the future due to the manager's horrendous attitude and discriminatory seating arrangement. By the way, after we left, we had the best dinner at Brenda's Meat & Three.

The most cheerful staff

By chat89 |

I thoroughly enjoyed my solo meal on a business trip to The City recently, but what I remember most about Isa is the cheerful, everywhere-at-once staff. At least four different people waited on me during my meal and I observed that this seemed to be the custom at this restaurant. All the wait staff served everyone. As for the food, I don't think you can get a better prix fixe three course meal anywhere for $29.95 (this is Sunday through Thursday) with a $5 glass of wine and a $5 Negroni (prices before 7 p.m.). I had organic salmon carpaccio which was really enough for two, filet of Petrale sole over vegetable, Mediterranean style with olives, and chevre with honey for dessert. The restaurant's "patio" is securely enclosed and the heaters are almost not needed while the strings of party lights give it a backyard and tropical feel. Very cosy.

Seasonal, Inventive, & Scrumptous

Each time I come to this wonderful restaurant I have something completely different and I'm always delighted. If you have friends who don't mind sharing each others food then bring them along so that you can have tastes of several dishes.

Tasty food in a less touristy location

By la2nj |

The food here is really tasty with creative combinations made from quality ingredients. The baked goat cheese with tomato concasse was especially yummy with the contrast of the creamy, warm cheese and the tartness of the tomatoes. Salads are crisp and deftly dressed. And the grilled asparagus was incredibly tender. The scallops were perfectly cooked tho the portion had fewer scallops than what is shown in some other reviewers' photos. And the Point Reyes blue cheese in lieu of dessert is incredibly rich, intense, and flavorful. We dined here for the 2-week special Dine About Town for $36.95 which was a good value. However if you come here and order from the regular menu without the prix fixe it could become pricey when trying multiple courses. If you're staying downtown, the cab ride can add to the total cost. Service was adequate, not lacking nor especially attentive. As others have commented, you need to walk past the kitchen and dishwashing area to get to the heated patio. The atmosphere is quaint with tables close together. If you come here, you probably should have an appreciation of the food preparation. This is a place that is best to go with several people who want to share portions to sample many things vs focusing on individual entrees.

We went by the Reviews... we were Disappointed

By 6453nsider |

My wife and I were staying the final night of our 20th wedding anniversary in Pacific Heights (Hotel Drisco) after spending three nights at Meadowood in St. Helena. We had not made reservations and were hoping to explore the area during the day and pick a place that we had not previously visited (this was our 5th trip to SFO). Isa stood out based on the reviews so we decided to book our dinner there. So let's look at how the evening unfolded... We arrived at our scheduled time and were seated immediately...even though the main dining area appeared to be full. We were led through the kitchen and into what I can only describe as a makeshift "back patio" that was created in the alley. Random walls and ceilings with Christmas lights and fake palm trees... I almost asked my wife to leave on the spot. I decided to give it a try... Waiter shows up and is very nice. Speaks to the Prix Fix menu. We order wine. Out comes wine glasses that are less than expected... small bowl, thick rim... Okay maybe I got too used to the special treatment in Napa?? I think not. Is this not SFO?? Wife and I struggle to decide on what to order. I entertain the thought of leaving and express this to my bride... we decide to stay and we both order Prix Fix... Corn soup for both and flat iron steak for me and Truffle Risoto for the wife. Corn "soup" arrives... Essentially a can of Cream Corn warmed with some parsley and herbs... Sad. In the meantime I decide that perhaps if I order a bottle of wine I'll get an acceptable glass from which to drink... not so. The bowl was slightly larger but still far from what I expect from SFO restaurants... starting to think I'm a snob. Food arrives... It's tasty but far from what is expected and FAR from the "Family Style" portions the waiter spoke of (for the record we didn't want large portions but this speaks to "get what you sell"...). Flavor of both entrees was fine. Nothing special. I could have prepared better at home. I write this NOT to degrade Isa. They are what they are. A three star restaurant parading as a better place based on reviews. It will make me question reviews on both TripAdvisor and OpenTable... Just not what was advertised. SORRY

Very good food at reasonable prices

By FCB5Cups4Stars |

One of the better restaurant experiences I have had. Went to Isa for dinner with a couple of work colleagues. The food was excellent and the servers and host were knowledgeable, helpful and just appeared to really love their work and the restaurant. Extremely welcoming experience. Would recommend the following (in order of what I liked best, dont get me wrong, everything below was great): - Yellowfin tuna - Baked Laura Chenel goat cheese - Roasted rack of lamb - Potato wrapped Seabass - Truffle risotto - Brussels Sprouts - Grilled golden gate natural angus flat iron steak

New Year Eve Dinner

By TheLeongOhana |

The family and I enjoyed a great set course dinner at Isa. We arrived early and we immediately taken to our seats. It was great finding parking right across the street and since the meter was broken we did not need to worry about time limits. Since there was five of us we got to order a big variety of dishes and more than one of our favorites. We all received a bowl of broccoli soup. A little runny but flavorful. For appetizers, we selected the oysters, tuna, and salmon dishes. My favorite is the tuna since it is mixed with avocados. The next set included the parchment fish (my fav), steamed mussels with toasted French bread high was great for dipping in the sauce and shrimp. Before getting our entrees we ordered foie gras which was a bit on the pricy side but very flavorful and rich. The berry sauce and poach pears jus adds to the taste experience. I had to fight with my kids for my share! For the main courses we ordered the mushroom risotto, duck (our favorite), short ribs (the meat just fell off the bone, so tender) and flat iron steak (perfectly cooked onto medium rare). Up to this point there was a lot of food and we were slowing down. Creme brûlée and ice cream were the finishing touches and not too heavy. Throughout the service our wait staff were attentive and delivered or removed the plates efficiently. Water glasses were constantly kept filled along with making sure all our needs were met. This is always a great place to enjoy great food and celebrate any special occasions.

Superb little restaurant with great food

By liverpool1023 |

Handily located for the hotels along Lombard street, this is a little local jewel of a place. There is a lively, buzzy atmosphere to place with plenty of bustle. The service is good. I had a calamari starter infused with flavoursome Mediterranean herbs. The mains included quite a simply cooked chicken breast with mashed potato.

Great prix fixe dinner

By Pete H |

My wife and I had a great meal- arugula salad- crisp and delicious, mussels- flavorful broth delicious bread, Alaskan halibut cooked perfectly with beets (my wife loved them, I am not much of a beet fan), mushroom risotto awesome, cheese for desert which we took home. Great meal friendly service.

great food

By JustineKaitaia |

I've enjoyed the three times ive been there. endive salad - pretty good lobster broth - pretty good goats cheese salad - excellent oysters - excellent scallops with bacon and potato - excellent brisket - excellent creme brulee - very good

An absolute gem

By Dennis M |

We sat at the bar as we were early and the restaurant was packed. by the tike we werew seated we were feeling no pain. Even then I would have to say that the small plate dishes were fantastic. The scallops, the bass wrapped in potatoes, the truffle rissotto... yum. a great first night in SFO this trip.

Love the idea of tasting and sharing

By DW |

I love the idea of sharing food. We stopped here based on the yelp reviews and were not disappointed. Excellent service and fantastic food. We ordered: Steamed Mussel Appetizer - the sauce was amazing. We loved dunking our grilled bread in it and cleaned the whole plate. They brought us extra bread :) Potato Wrapped Seabass - I'm still trying to figure out how they got the potato slices perfectly cooked and crispy without overcoming the Seabass. The sauce complimented the dish very well Flat Iron Steak - the steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The flavors went well together I would definitely stop here again on my next trip to San Francisco

wonderful 30th annivesary place to dine.

By Linda C |

We were at Isa during SF Restaurant Week to celebrate our 30th anniversary and they were very thoughtful as they got us the same table from our last visit. They even gave us two small glasses of wine to celebrate our special occasion. Nice that they had done that even though they were so busy as the restaurant was so packed.

Fabulous Restaurant!!

By 123AdventurousTravel |

I highly recommend this restaurant, The food is consistently delicious, the service is excellent, and the owner is so kind and accomodating. This is my favorite restaurant in the Marina. The back covered porch is a beautiful and relaxing. atmosphere and not too loud. Don't moss this special dining experience.

6 out of 5

By nanwithaplan |

I can honestly say that the food was absolutely excellent, the service was spot on and it was the best meal we have had in the USA. We had salmon carpacchio and lobster soup to start, both were delicious, light and full of flavour. For main we had the halibut and rack of lamb, the fish was accompanied by golden beets, orange segments and watercress, the lamb with courgettes, aubergine and olives the balance was perfection. We finished with vanilla gelato with biscoti and semifreddo with amaretto, cold sweet and crunchy. My husband said it was the perfect dribble factor, each mouthful left you salivating ready for the next one.

Superb

By Carlos A |

We had the "Prix Fixe", 3-course dinner. This was just excellent. The food composition of each course, the taste: exceptional. And the service was very attentive.

A little disappointed.

By Cac_029 |

My boyfriend and I were very excited to try Isa. The menu looked delicious and the atmosphere seemed to be ideal based on reviews. However, I was a little let down but our experience... maybe it was a case of too high of expectations. First, I was underwhelmed by their wine menu. I ordered a glass of the malbec, a new favorite of mine, and did not think it was a good as the glasses I've had at other restaurants. The arugula salad and chicken I ordered were both good, but my boyfriend's dishes did not live up to his expectations (lobster broth and mussels). Finally, we were sat by the door, the tables were extremely close together, and the restaurant seemed quite loud. To sum it up, I would say the food and atmosphere are fine, but there may be better choices in the area.

Amazing Tapas, Great Cocktails, Great Heated Patio

By DScheidy |

I'm in town for a business conference, and picked this restaurant because of other Trip Advisor reviews, and it's proximity to the Palace of Fine Arts (which I wanted to visit). The food was amazing, and the atmosphere was wonderful. Our waiter was charming, and explained that the head chef had been there 13 years and so they've perfected each of the dishes. He recommended several for us - suggestions which we took him up on. We started with an arugula salad (very lovely - good way to get some greens), goat cheese (wonderfully hot with a nice tomato sauce and pine nuts - not drenched in sauce, which was also nice), and a vinaigrette-dressed crab salad inside of butter lettuce leaves that light, crisp and refreshing. For our "entrée" plates we had the scallops with mashed potatoes & asparagus in a truffle sauce (so simple yet so delicious), the sea bass wrapped in potato (a- how do they get the potatoes so thin and crispy, yet the fish was so tender!!), and the mushroom risotto (amazingly rich without being overwhelming - just a wonderful dish). Every dish that we had, we each were ooo'ing and ahhh'ing at how delicious it was. I really don't think you can go wrong here. As for our cocktails, my coworker had a Moscow Mule made with soju that was an amazingly different yet surprising take on a MM, and I had a soju negroni, which was the best I'd ever had. All in all, atmosphere is great, food is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. You can't go wrong.

Delicious French food at good price

By Gurinder S |

Went with friends and loved the food and service. Their potato wrapped fish is the best. Vegetable pairing with Rack of Lamb is great. Prices are reasonable. Ask to sit in their patio, you would love it.

Best drinks, awesome food and cool ambiance!

By KCinLG |

Dined here many times but never sat at the bar where Sergio made the BEST drinks. I only took photos of two drinks, but we had sooo many. My group had such a great time, we went there for pre and post dinner drinks. Told my friends next time we need to dine here as the food is just as good as the drinks. Thanks, Sergio, for making the best dirty martinis and espresso martinis. We had a blast and will be back!

Great little hole in the wall off Lombard

By CAfoodandwinelover |

Ate here a couple years ago and just revisited the place. This is the type of restaurant you want to try when visisting San Francisco. Charming little place off of Lombard with a covered back patio. Lots of character. The food is served family style, which means shared. Happy hour cocktails and wine before 7 pm for $5. My daughter and I shared an appetizer, the salt cured salmon, a salad, and two entrees, the seared scallops and the maple leaf duck breast served with poached pears. All were nicely prepared. But the side of grilled asparagus was amazing.

Delicious!

By jmaltais169 |

I had the arugula salad and then the Sea Bass dish (with corn) and my husband had the corn soup followed by the flank steak. Every bite of everything was full of exquisite flavor. We were seated in the back enclosed patio which proved to be a lively fun place on a Friday evening. Really liked how the owner was checking on every table to ensure quality of food and happiness of diners. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Just average, food disappointing

By Petra V |

We went to Isa as we got a recommendation from two different friends but were rather disappointed. The atmosphere was really nice especially in the back but the food was really not good. The grilled calamari was served with white beans and very intense olives which just didn't work very well together. The fish of the day was ok but came again with these olives. Also the spinach and the mussels can be prepared in a much more delicious way. Wouldn't recommend this restaurant.

Bad service and/or concept trumps good food

By eclectic_traveler043 |

eaten here many times, previous review was a 5. However, the last two visits have been awful. Food remains excellent - but the good part of the experience stops there. Menu proudly says "family style, share plates, food comes out when it is cooked" What this means is that a few minutes after your small table is filled with the small plates that you said you wanted to start with, out comes the more expensive larger plates because that is when the chef got around to them (NOT when you wanted them). Even tho your small plates are still piled hi with food, the server wants to remove them because there is no place to put the large plates. We sent the large plates back, aware that they would just be kept warm, congealing, until we had rushed through the small plates. And, beware, the large plates will arrive literally in under 60 seconds after the waiters have snatched your finally empty small plates. This lovely approach removes any tension on the part of the kitchen and waiters to try to time courses to fit the customers. In well under an hour, you can be in and out with this approach - just don't imagine that you have dined.

Great Mediterranean style restaurant

By Nancy B |

We spotted Isa while strolling through the Marina district checking out the possibilities and were very happy with our choice. We shared a lovely arugula and fig salad. My sea bass was phenomenal and my husband loved his paella. The little chocolate souffle was the perfect end to a delicious meal. We will definitely eat there again.

Asian fusion in the Marina

By Blouie888 |

The food was excellent. We had the prix fixe dinner which offers a choice of an appetizer, entrée and dessert for $30.00. For the appetizer make sure someone in your party orders the steamed mussels. Save some bread to soak up all the juices.Try to order different items. The portions are Tapa sized and can be shared by your friends. The only drawback of this restaurant is that it's in the Marina, parking can be problematic.

PERFECT FOOD , GREAT SERVICE IN AND "SO SO" DINING ROOM.

By winefrog |

Excellent small portions menu, The device was great. We had one of the most efficient and charming waiter. The food experience was what we had been recommended by some San Francisco friends. Too bad we had to go through the dishwashing area to get to our table.... This being said, we will go back for the food....(I recommend the risotto))

Very good food in cozy place

By Ofer R |

The Isa is a great place with very good dish. We had the corn soup, risotto , steak and salads which were very good. Close to lombard street.

Great service and good food!

Nice little place with great service and good food. We enjoyed the food, calamari was good. The Seabass was good as was the duck breast. Nice ambiance and friendly service.

Great food and amazing wine

By Wendy40Paris |

We had dinner with friends and the food was superb. Especially the red cabbage and quinoa dish. A friend had the paella which seemed wonderful too. Wine list amazing. Only little worry, it was a bit noisy where we were, too close to the kitchen.

A hidden Gem. Excellent Food and service, and very nice ambiance in their heated patio.

By Steve |

A hidden Gem. You can't tell they have a huge heated patio in the back. The food was so delicious, especially their Seabass, the best fish I ever had. Prices are very reasonable for SF. Service was good, the waiter was attentive and friendly. Even the guests were very happy and friendly, I made friends with a nice couple sitting next to us from London, UK. I will definitely be coming back and highly recommended!

Very good, but not traditional French food

By Kentucky1968 |

My family of four very much enjoyed this restaurant and its service and atmosphere. The food style was French with heavy Japanese fusion. Nice combo, just not what we were expecting. Nonetheless, we very much enjoyed and would return again.

What a great experience

By CALIson73 |

In SF on an overnight business trip and needed to have a nice meal. Found this gem on trip advisor and after looking at the reviews, menu and wine list figured I’d give it a try seeing as it was a rainy night and I didn’t want to travel far. WOW did I make the correct decision. Walked in and was immediately greeted by a gentleman who turns out is the owner. The service was very attentive but not hovering, I order one course at a time and eat slow but they didn’t mind at all. The wines by the glass are good (I’m a winemaker so I’m picky). Then there is the food SPECTACULAR I really liked the Yellow Fin Tuna it was beyond fresh and paired well with the avocado. I had the rack of lamb rare ant it was to perfection. It’s a place I will visit often. Overall it is as good as San Francisco dining gets.

Food was delicious and well presented

By BBBBTravel |

Enjoyed dinner at this wonderful restaurant. The food was delicious and satisfying. We enjoyed our server’s sincere love for the restaurant and sweet jokes.

Really delicious food with attentive service

By bebejaja |

Things did not start particularly well: we were shown to a rectangular table at which one of the five of us would be sitting with an empty seat across from him or her, the table was right next to the kitchen, when I asked for sparkling water, I was told that the restaurant makes its own sparkling water (I have tried those and simply don't like them at all) and finally after looking at the menu and picking an appetizer and a main course that I really wanted (the tuna on avocado and the seared scallops - they were terrific indeed), we were told that the restaurant encourages family style dining (sharing all the dishes) by bringing dishes one or two at a time. I have always been suspicious of "family dining", thinking that it reflects a chef unable to plan his cooking so that all appetizers are ready at the same time. Right away things started looking up in a big way: the very nice waitress came back with a large bottle of San Pellegrino. I never found out whether there was a special stash of it for people like me, fussy about their water, or whether somebody had run to a convenient store around the corner to buy a few bottles. Either way, I really appreciated the effort and that little detail set a positive tone for the rest of the evening. The restaurant also accommodated us by removing one of the three tables that had been put together to create our table so that one of the five of us could sit at the end and not feel left out all by him or herself. The stage was set for the feast that was coming our way. When the dishes started arriving, including appetizers and main courses that I had little or no interest in, but that my wife or adult children were keen to try, the dinner turned out to be fantastic: every single of the five appetizers and five main courses that we had ordered was simply prepared to perfection, pleasing on the eyes and tasty. So many interesting combinations of flavors! Just outstanding. Finally a word about the wine list: how refreshing to find a wine list with many interesting and reasonably priced selections. Why do so few restaurants in the US think that they should apply an identical multiplier to their wine costs that discourages ordering the pricier offerings? Isa really gets it on all fronts! Congrats! We will be back on our frequent visits to SF (we have two children who live there).

Thank you other reviewers

By BrendaEngland |

We visited this restaurant purely because of other reviews. We struggle with American white wines as we find them overly sweet or too oaked for our palate how wonderful to find a New Zealand Sauvignon for $5 a glass for happy hour. What a great start ! We chose the fixed price menu 3 courses I had salmon carpaccio followed by halibut and the flourless chocolate cake with vanilla bean ice cream my husband had calamari followed by chicken and amaretti semi fredo all dishes were of good quality and tasty (see pics) if you can try this restaurant you won't be disappointed

everything done to perfection

By eclectic_traveler043 |

It is unusual when every plate is done just perfectly - but it happened at a recent visit to Isa. Starters of grilled local calamari and a nominal side order of local mushrooms in jus de veau. Calamari was sweet, tender, almost melt in mouth. Mushrooms in jus de veau were rich, lovely. We then split an order of the seasonal fish, which was halibut. The fish was cooked to perfection, a nice crunchy outside, moist on the inside, lovely sauce and vegi sides. We followed that with a split of the roasted rack of lamb, which was one of the best we have ever had. Quality of the lamb was superb, cooking perfect. Wine list is interesting and well priced. This is not a place that does unexpected, trendy combinations - they just cook some real classics perfectly.

Forgot to mention the wonderful scallops---they were super. And the Brussels sprouts with bacon are excellent!

Super food!

Great atmosphere and service, super delicious food, lots of options and good location. Wish we'd been seated in the back where all the action was though. I'd definitely go back. It was awesome!

Best meal we had in San Francisco

By Carol K |

Best meal we had in San Francisco and only $30 for 3 courses!! Cocktails only $5 for happy hour! I'd eat here every night for dinner if I lived here. I had the grilled calamari appetizer and halibut, both were fantastic, but the halibut was probably the best piece of fish I ever had. I tried the grapefruit granite and semifreddo all' Amaretto for dessert, I'd highly recommend either one. Even the cocktails were great, particulary the Number Seven, which had fresh blackberries. I forgot to mention they also serve nice warm bread to start :) Service was great and the courses were very well paced. So glad we have this as our last meal to remember from San Francisco.

Great atmosphere, foodie experience

By Oana- Raluca M |

It's situated in a very safe area of San Fran, minutes away from marina drive. If you like having a bunch of different plates and share that's the place to be. Amazing flavors combined with a great atmosphere and a very friendly staff. Highly recommend it

Better service, worse food then last time.

By MichelDavidoff |

I reviewed this restaurant in the past and came back since initially I said that the food was great but not the service. This time it was just the opposite. I will not be back. For me consistency is key and this place is not! The Tuna appetizer was OK nothing to tell about it, for the main dish I had the Duck. Again it was OK, or I should say OK at best. Duck was over cooked (even the server said so, looking at it) but he never offered to replace it, the beets had no flavor. We skipped dessert.
