Totally disappointed

By icurros4 |

I will begin by telling you this use to be our regular go to place for breakfast when our sons lived with us and it was always good. However, the last 2 times it has been HORRIBLE!!! If I could have given this a minus 5 stars I would have. We went to eat breakfast this morning and bad doesn't begin to describe it. The only good thing were their croqueta. We were 4 adults and 3 kids. To begin with the servers usually have the Comon Sences to bring the kid water and drinks in plastic cups with straws. We ordered 2 Mamey milk shake for of the 3 kids and asked them to please split one of them. we showed him who the 3 kids were ( 18 month, 3 year old and 7 year old) and he brought 3 GLASS glasses, but this was not even the worst. We order 4 different breakfast, a side order of bacon, 2 croquetas, and a side of grites. Sadlly none of us could finish one of the plates. The bacon, the pancakes, and the grits were all undercooked the fries were soggy and the bread was not even toasted. We asked for jelly and more butter for our bread we are still waiting for it. We had to remind the server to bring our 3 Cuban coffees and our daughter in law's café con leche even though that is part of order with every breakfast plater. We finally asked him to put it in a to go cup. All in all we wasted our time, and money over $60 and we left there and went to a bakery on tamiami and 132 Ave to eat breakfast again.

One of the best

By Havanaguy |

One of the best Cuban restaurants in Miami. Not fancy, but the food is very authentic. Ham croquets are the signature of this place. There is no other place that makes them as good, and the beans are delicious.

good Cuban food in Homestead FL

By brianbalk |

This place is obviously a neighborhood fixture. Huge drive-through and walk-up lines, and lots of seating. Won the annual croquetas contest. Great lamb chops and pot roast. Wish we had time to try more on the menu!

Yum!

By FromIowa |

I will preface this review by admitting that I have never had Cuban food before, so I am certainly no expert. That being said, my teenager and I arrived around 4:30 PM after a day in the Everglades; we were surprised to see that most of their tables were full. We were seated promptly and our drink orders were taken immediately (which we really appreciated). We started with their croquettes de jámon and could have happily have ordered more, they were so delicious! The rest of our meal arrived surprisingly quickly. My son had bistec habañero which was tender and flavorful. He also had their banana shake which he simply described as "excellent". I just opted for a Cuban sandwich and their shoestring fries. They were tasty, but I wish I'd been more adventuresome. Unfortunately they were out of Tres Leches cake, so we split a serving of flan, which we both enjoyed. Throughout our meal the staff was very attentive. My son wishes they'd open another restaurant closer to our home!

MEALS IN PIECES

By UNPREDICTABLE1 |

Our visit was for Father's Day. We were a large group and there was a huge wait. Clearly living in S. Florida that is nothing new so no complaints there. However, we did have a couple of issues. The first one was that people who came in after us were seated first because they were groups of 5 or 6, that wouldn't have even been an issue either, had they not separated tables which could have easily accommodated our entire group to seat them as they went along. In the end they ended up seating us in two separate tables. The second issue, which was the truly annoying one was that some of us ordered breakfast. We received our cafe con leches and toasts 40 minutes before we received our eggs, and sides. I don't know if they knew that hot toasted Cuban bread and cafe con leche gets cold when it sits there for 40 minutes. Maybe not, so I had no choice but to eat it while it was edible. When the eggs and ham got there the ham looked like it had been sitting out in the sun since it was like rubbery on the corners. I didn't bother saying or doing anything about it because it was Father's Day and I didn't want to kill the happy time for a $7 breakfast. I will say that their croquetas are excellent and the waiter was helpful. I think the problem was poor kitchen organization. For a restaurant that has been around as long as this one has, you would think they would have everything figured out by now.

Sunday Breakfast

By Nvelez89 |

This place is def better for lunch. We had breakfast here on Mother's Day and it was ok. Could of been better. The harina (grits) were watered down and the scrambled eggs weren't all that. The toast and coffee were good. My family enjoyed the croquetas as well. But lunch here is def better indeed.

Yummy Cuban food

By Haydee |

My husband, abuela, and I always love coming here to eat. We can never complain about the food. We are always full when we leave and always have enough food for the next day to eat. The portions are huge and the servers are always willing to help out if anything is needed.

Just what we had hopped for

By Nate080411 |

We came here after seeing Anthony Bourdain come here on his show years ago. We got the Cubano coffee and the Cuban sandwich. Both were delicious. Really exactly what we had hoped for. I would recommend coming here even if it is a bit of a drive for you. They have two locations and we went to the restaurant one so we could sit down. They had seats inside and outside and moved the line pretty quickly. The sandwich is pretty thick so I split it with my wife and that was the perfect size for our meal.

Good Cuban Food

By Mr. Mir |

Prices are good. For the most part the food is great! I tried the Vaca Frita Chicken Style. My friend tried the original Vaca Frita. Both were delicious! Staff is helpful. I recommend the place. Although is not located in the tourist area of Miami. It’s a good choice for Cuban food!

Authentic Cuban Food

By VirginiaLove2Travel |

While visiting our friends, we went to this restaurant. Pleasant workers. Fortunately we had someone in our party that spoke fluent Spanish as the server was trying to learn English. My sister said the mojitos were out of this world. We ordered everything from croquettas to steak to fish (Mahi Mahi). Those items were all very good; however, the side dishes were not the best. The yellow rice was served cold and really didn't have much flavor. The homemade potato chips I never got (they gave me cold French fries and when I returned them for what I ordered, I got hot French fries that were soggy). The plantains were good. We ordered flan and Cuban coffee for dessert. The flan was very good, but the coffee was served at room temperature.

Lunch

By Mari H |

This is now called Caribe, which confused me because what I wanted was the Islas Canarias croquettes. I was told it was the same place different name. My croquettes were excellent. My husband had the roast pork, Moros and yuca and he raved about it. The prices are moderate and the portions big. He definitely wants to go back sooner than later...

Islas Canarias Restaurant

By EvanGuthrie |

Islas Canarias Restaurant is one of the best Cuban restaurants that I have ever been to. Everything on the menu is delicious and tasty and flavorful. There is no wrong choice as everything I tried was terrific. I really like the vibe and atmosphere of this place as it is very relaxed and laid back. The service here is great as they really know how to take care of their customers. This is a wonderful dining experience that has been consistently excellent every time I have been here.

Enjoyed the Cuban food

By Dominika P |

On our last day in Miami, my boyfriend and I wanted to try some Cuban food. We picked this place based on Yelp reviews. When arriving, there was plenty of seating, so we were just informed us to take a seat wherever we'd like. As soon as we were seated, the waiter came up and just started speaking Spanish to us, which neither one of us speak. After realizing this, our waiter started speaking some basic English - but enough to communicate what we'd like. Service was quick, food was great! I ordered the flank steak with yellow rice and fried plantains and my boyfriend ordered the Chicken Parm with rice/beans and fried plantains. We definitely enjoyed our meal and would recommend to others looking to try some Cuban food :) We ended our meals with the "cafe con leche" and it was delish!

I am born and raised in Miami. Islas is beat Cuban restaurant in town. Hands down. Croquettes are top notch as are media niche and vaca frita.

Best Cuban Food!

First visited this restaurant 10 years ago, and today came for breakfast and later dinner. Authentic Cuban food. Best ham croquettes in Miami. Servers are always friendly.

Poor Service and Poor Upper Management Attitude- Horrible customer service

By Elisabeth R |

This used to be my favorite place to buy croquetas. The quality of the food and service has gradually diminished. I took my cousins who were visiting from Canary Islands and the restaurant was out of croquetas de bacalao, they didn't have Cava on the menu, they were out of dulce de leche and volcan dessert...we had to wait for the menu, the waiter was not attentive to our needs. When we ordered dessert, he came by to say: We are out of dulce de leche and Volcan canario, and did not offfer another dessert or had no interest in making it a pleasant experience for us. I felt like i was back in Cuba where you just run out of food. This is outrageous! I ended up getting the platanos chatinos rellenos de camarones and they were delicious. On our way out, we told the hostess, as a constructive criticism, we like the restaurant and are loyal customers, don't know what happened? yet she did not offer and excuse, she simply brushed us off. That is no way to treat customers....I will NOT go back ever again!

Great Food any day!!!

By yusniel r |

I've been going to this place for years and let me tell you that it doesn't get better than this. All the food is great; anywhere from breakfast to dinner to the outside cafeteria whete they serve the best croquetas and batido ( croquette and fruit shake ). The different breakfast conbinations are big, awesome and cheap. Also should try the lomo de cerdo relleno de fu fu. This is a real cuban place and must try las croquetas... Best best best...

Disrespectful

By Adrian R |

This restaurant is a delay every time you go to pick up your food, it is never ready at the time that the website itself supposedly tells you, it is disrespectful that I have to wait more than 30 minutes apart from the time that the website tells me because according to them the food is not ready, if they put a standard pick-up time, at least comply with that time, or at least do not make anyone wait more than 45 minutes for their food, it is disrespectful and I do not recommend Islas Canarias Restaurant at all for your online orders.

Croquetas

By dstoyano |

Just bought good crquetas the place is always full lots of pick ups. nothing else to say for now ok?

Quantity over quality

By Traveler |

The food was average the bread at the beginning was hard as a rock. and the meals tasted average good nothing that can't be made at home. The service was poor only because of the lack of employees. The restaurant was at half capacity and the 2 servers were rushing. Other than that it was okay. I do not recommend this restaurant.

World-class

By VaGentry |

Just by chance we stopped into Island Canaries coming into Miami from Everglade City on 41. The food was fantastic. Swore I was in Cuba. I had the crab stuffed dolphin. The cheese flan and Cuban coffee finished off a perfect meal.

Tasty Cuban food

By Stephanie D |

Enjoyed our first time at Islas Canarias. The food was very tasty but the service was a little slow once we received our main courses. Since we were visiting with friends, this didn't bother us because we didn't feel rushed to leave. We tried both the ham and chicken croquettas but really loved the ham ones.

Good Cuban Food

By 1776BigH |

Old stand by establishment. All items we tried were consistently good to very good. Great service. This is good standard fare. Large portions. Great value. Cuban sandwich perfect. Will keep going back.

Slightly mixed review

By cookiejorge . |

Came for a family lunch and had a great time. Extremely busy and our apptizers never arrived. We had the Arroz con pollo, the lamb shanks, salmon filet and the chicken and shrimp with orange sauce. All was excellent except for the chicken and shrimp. It was mediocre....should have stayed with a traditional dish instead. Service was good and price was reasonable. Would definitely come again.

Superb service. Very good food. Authentic. Great value. Close your eyes, use your imagination....and you are back in Las Villas BEFORE H.P.

NOT WHAT IT USE TO BE. Disappointed with food and service.

By isabelnwilliams |

Ordered vaca frita and was burnt, five croquetas and not one soda cracker. The gal at the drive thru was expecting a tip , I disappointed her too.

Yummy Cuban Sandwich

Just got in on a flight from out of state , Its a rainy day out went through the drive thru and got my self a delicious Sandwich Cubano especial with a cafe con leche!

Good authentic food

By Chandan D |

Nice people. Clean restaurant, fast service and very good food. We googled to get this. Lucky that we did that way. Very family oriented restaurant. Food choices are many and they all are made to order and considerably fast.

Cuban Classic

By Christy M |

Our go to spot for Cuban food (when we don’t feel like cooking it ourselves at home). Huge selection of Cuban classics and friendly staff. The ham croquetas are the best in Miami!

Good

By Harold F |

The cook couldn't get my steak temperature right. Although the ham croquet is very tasty. Service friendly.

Always good food when you go there for Cafe Con Leche it is very good their food is very consistent all the time

Liked the Cuban dishes

By PeterBSanFrancisco |

Good Cuban food, lots of meat, large portions for hungry people. Not a foodie spot, but probably more comfort food. Helps to speak Spanish.

Fantastically delicious and authentic

By ViolentWampa |

What a gem of a find! Located on our way from the hotel to the Everglades, I only wish I could have one nearby all of the time. Food was authentic Cuban, wonderfully prepared, excellent service in a nice environment. Absolutely no second thoughts on recommending it to anyone.

Worse cuban food in Miami.

By Normy13 |

If you are cuban you notice that the food is greasy and salty compare to others cuban restaurants in the area and the service is bad, I went this afternoon with some friends and the have the same opinion, they brought us the dessert without cleaning the table.

Always very good

By LPadron |

I have been to this restaurant many times and have never been disappointed. I was there again in January 2016 with friends and family and we were all very pleased. The food is always very good. It has grown through the years but I can assure you the food is very tasty, fresh and consistent.

"CROQUETA KING"

By Armando J |

Islas Canarias originally opened its doors about 40 years ago on the corner of NW 27th. Avenue and 3rd. Street. From the start their claim to fame and to this day are the "CROQUETAS", no one makes these CROQUETAS like Isla Canarias and for CROQUETA lovers their is no other choice. Overall their Cuban Food and Sandwiches are fantastic and highly recommended but the "CROQUETAS" are the bomb! If you stop by the outside window for a Cafe Cubano you will amazed by the amount of CROQUETAS that are sold in the 5 or 10 minutes you are there! Oh Yes the Mamey and Papaya Batidos are very good as well. Guaranteed you will take CROQUETAS to go !

Breakfast with my husband!!

By Shannon M |

My first visit to the famous Islas Canarias Restaurant and I have to say, I can't wait to return! They are famous for their croquettas and I have to agree... THE BEST!!!!

Croquetas, sandwich and coffee!

By Jonpais |

I got the cubano sandwich which was amazing and my wife got the pork sandwich which was even better. Dont miss the croquetas and the coffee after you meal is a nice shot of espresso (doused in sugar)!!! Excellent and really reasonable prices!

Family Oriented

By pepepinga |

This place is very nice and also family oriented. The food is a mix of Spanish and Cuban dishes very well prepare to me this is the best Cuban restaurant in the Miami area. First of all the owner is always there keeping an eye on everything from food preparation to seating accommodations the ambiance is nice and lije I said before family orient even though sometimes it gets too loud that is why I rated a 4 Stars 8nstead of 5 stars restaurant

Great Cuban food!

By Maguilla G |

We have been going to this restaurant since around 1985 (they used to be on Bird Road before opening this location). Still a great experience every time. We visit several times a week.

Dinner with the family

By Maday M |

The usual Cuban local food, not great but not totally mediocre. Mario had the liver and we had The palomilla steak that was ok. If you need your fix of Cuban food this is as good as any neighborhood food.

Home cooking at its best!

By ElFlaco |

Sometimes you are so accustomed to pass-by a place so close to you and that you frequently visit to the point that you take it for granted, since after all, you see it almost every day! Well, this restaurant every month we go either to pick-up, grab a quick Cuban coffee and a croqueta or pastry while standing up on the outside counter, or just seat and eat any meal of the day and enjoy the so close to home cooking. I admit to have paid little importance to it until the other night. The real deal is that this restaurant has been a staple in the local community in Miami for a long, long time. Here you get a great service, delicious Cuban and other Spanish-Latin favorite entries in a very good ambiance at a price that surprises you how so much food for a little price!? Always the same owners, managing the floor with an ever attention to details or that missing glass of water on that table or the prompt attention. If I have to choose, I’d tell you to order the Paellas with a glass of the fresh made sangria or a mojito, you just can’t go wrong on any item in the menu, and we have tasted almost everything in 30 years of attending this place. Here there are no pretentions, just a great experience every single time, after time.

Horrible

By Santanasway |

Horrible, I am beyond upset, went early this morning to buy croquetas for bosses day. When I arrived to work and gave them to my bosses they were beyond horrid!!! Greasy, tasted like them ham was bad, sour all went to the garbage! How freaking embarrassing. So much for tried and true. 25.00 to waste, and me bragging these were the best in town. Tried calling the manager, was put on hold disconnected. Called back put on hold five minutes later told manager wasn’t there asked for name put on hold again, another lady gets on the phone repeats manager no here, manager no here, when I ask for the managers they hung up on me. Unbelievable!!!

GOOD FOOD

By Miles Archer |

In Little Havana. I've had breakfast and lunch here. For breakfasts, I go for the omelets, either with or without meat. At lunchtime I like chicken dishes mainly, though sometimes beef items. Good food.

Is this the Beginning of the End for the Islas Canarias Restaurants.????

By George M |

I was a longtime customer 15 year plus, yes because today it is my last visit to the Islas Canarias Restaurant 3804 SW 137th Ave Miami, FL 33175. The place looks great after remodel and expansion, but now lacks in time service and food quality, it has been damage big time. During my visit, there were one or two waitresses per table I would say around 20-25 walking and moving around and only two cooks or chefs. Our waitress took the order and it was only after 30 min later it was deliver. While we waited I looked around and we could see multiple tables with customers looking around at each others faces ,it was like a comedic movie to see their facial expressions of expectation and wonder like what the heck is going on here; food was serve undercook fries and steak. I don't understand how this place got so bad and at the same time people still go there, maybe for loyalty or a place that has some Cuban food. I Pay almost $80.00 and still felt completely cheated out of my money and my eating experience. Hope the owners ( la Finca -Islas Canarias at 26st) make the adjustment needed to bring customers like me back .

what is all the fuzz about ???

By rene2014123 |

I have been going to ISLAS CANARIAS since it opened at 27 av , then Raul (owner ) opened this one years later and retired , daughter took over and destroyed the quality , last time I was there was over a year ago , the previous to last my wife got a charred whole snapper, then the last time my uncle and I got a "vaca frita" that tasted and smelled like fish. The only good thind about food in this place is CROQUETTES.

Great Cuban food

By DomCub |

I haven’t visited in a while but the place was redone and the food still out of this world . The menu is extensive and the food was amazing . They even have a Cuban food drive through . Service was good also . If in the area , worth it to stop by

Too long a wait for dinner:

By Tuti1107 |

Came for dinner again the food is really good besides is very closed to my house but the problem I do have is the bad service I was at the bar the poor girl had no clues how to deal with customers never mind the pressure if there is many people waiting for at least water Coffe or just the bill to pay and why not where is my food but like I said she was trying to do better, a manager saw her and not even offered to help, you Need to look into your staff and have the have them trained better when it comes to dealing with customers, sample, customer show up the proper way is to get water bread and say I be with you in a minute, or once the customer finishes start picking up the plates etc what about water not having the customer ask for it instead refill the glass but like I said the problem I see is that she never received the correct training and if she did. None is supervising her in order to correct the problem Managing-is the key here and that is what is you are missing...

Madhouse

By Canesbiggdogg |

Went for breakfast with the family. It was a madhouse to get a table. No one knew if the line outside was for people trying to give their name for waiting list or people already waiting to be seated. This place has been there for a while so dont know the reason. We ordered and it took a while when the cuban bread came is was hard and with little butter. The spanish tortilla was just a regular omelette. really was that a good experience.

Great croquettes

By AJCC1 |

This place has incredible croquetas. The service is quick and friendly. They are currently remodeling but that doesn't stop them from providing excellent quality. Grabbed a quick breakfast here which was divine!

Horrible service, cold and over cooked food

By Janet B |

The service was horrible despite the fact that there were a bunch of employees. They took well over 20 minutes (by a watch) just to take our order. When the food finally was served it was cold and the seafood over cooked. There were 5 people in our party and NOT one single plate was good. Calamares and shrimp were over cooked, caldo gallego was pure salt, steak cold and hard and finally, tostones a giant cold grease pit. The waitress was overwhelmed with 4 (four) tables of 4 person each!!! There is better Cuban food places in Miami but this is way past its prime. Mind you were celebrating a birthday. We didn't even bother with desert. Don't bother.

Great food

By Zenia A |

The service is a hit and miss however the food is always so fresh and delicious. Papas saltiadas for breakfast are always a must

Croquetas!!!

By Jackieblue |

The best croquetas in town. Everything is usually fantastic. Highly recommend. Practice your spanish, but don't let that keep you away. The food is worth it, the atmosphere is typical for Cuban food which is the best, this place is great!!!

Lunch in Miami

By Antonio B |

After reading having the best croquetas in Miami desired to drive for half an hour for lunch, worth the trip, in fact the best croquetas ever had, my wife and had to share to taste everything from that mariquitas a very delicious ajiaco croquetas and croqueta sandwich to finish up with a flan with coconut. Fast service very friendly staff nothing fancy but can wait to go back to try something different from the large cuban menu.

Islas Canarias in Miami

By Road109214 |

The food is good. The waitress who served my friends was kind of drugged or drunk. She dropped trays, argued with other waiters, and yelled from one end of the restaurant to the other. Very unpleasant. I don't know how the owners allow these behaviors.

My favorite Cuban restaurant ever

By emailjlo |

I absolutely love Islas Canarias. One of the most delicious and authentic Cuban restaurants that I have ever eaten at. Hands down best croquetas in Miami and I love their fried malanga. Delicious! Great times with great people and it is well worth the wait!

YUMMY and WELL PRICED

By BGoudieSOMI |

One of my favorite restaurants for Cuban food. It's authentic, plentiful, and well-priced. The croquetas and mariquitas are outstanding. The shredded pork is ridiculously flavorful and my favorite dish.

croquettes

By Haroldo G |

I love buying croquettes at Islas canarias, I think they are probably the best in town. I visit the restaurant to buy them very often. But today I had a big disappointment, not only the service was not ok, but the croquettes were AWFUL..nothing compared to what I usually have there.

Great Cuban food

By nathalie127 |

Every time I come to Miami, I come here for my Cuban food fix. My 89 yr old Cuban grandma can’t spend much time in the kitchen anymore, so this is the closest I can get! Best ham croquetas in the city, the tamales are great too. From appetizers to their desserts (splurge!) you can’t go wrong

Great food at Islas Canarias

By Mari E |

Islas Canarias is a great restaurant for fresh and authentic Spanish food. Excellent service and the restaurant is always open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have best coquetas in town. Strongly recommended for families or any occasion, including business luncheons; reasonable prices.

GOOD AUTHENTIC CUBAN CUISINE

By Liliana2013515 |

On Sunday, September 13th, we got together at Islas Canarias for breakfast at Noon time, in celebration of my daughter's birthday. We love this place, first because we live in the neighborhood,Second because the food is good authentic Cuban cuisine,Third because the prices and service is GOOD, and Fourth because is a place that you can take the entire family including children and you will find something in the menu for ALL. I personally love their "ham croquetas" the very best in town. Also their seafood dishes are Awesome!

Excellent cuban food and service

By HectorFL |

We had dinner there the past week. The shrimp creole was very good as well as the roast pork. The flan for dessert was excellent.

A Taste of Cuba in the South West, Miami.

By Octavio L |

Excellent and authentic Cuban restaurant. For us, the best in Miami. We had an awesome time. Friendly staff and delicious food.

Ridiculous!

By travelislifeMiami |

For many years I have been visiting this restaurant and was very satisfied with it. Today I went to buy their famous croquetas and ham and cheese empanadas. The croquetas and the empanadas were reduced to half the size they used to be and the price have increased. Two mini empanadas and 4 mini croquetas with tip cost me $17. I’ll never come back.

Wow!!!!!!!!!

By John A |

Did not like the food did not like the croquettes that they're so famous for I was not impressed as far as Cuban cuisine goes save your money save your time the staff is nothing to talk about I don't know about the rest of you I demand a clean bathroom it's an extension of the kitchen and the rest of the areas that we didn't see disgusting

If I could review lower I would

By Rafael P |

The service is terrible, you have to keep sending your order back, the managers are disrespectful, and the food is not fresh.

Good food due Peruvian Chef in a Cuban Restaurant

By bambam1955 |

Even after arrival, found many people waiting outdoor, my first impression was this restaurant has a more educated clients, because you do not find people shouting or screaming loud. The food was very good with recommendation of the chef that, quickly you identify is a peruvian chef. Loved food as Caldo Gallego (Beans soup) Basa shrimp and salmon with rissotto is very acceptable. Prices are very moderate, sometimes parking is not easy, but you will have a good restaurant experience.

Great dinner!

By Royce_3 |

Some great food! Visited wanted some local food. Not the same stuff we have in Texas. What a great place. Loved dinner. Staff was friendly and helpful

nice place and food

By Victor E |

very nice environment, the attention was very good, water was serve all the time , the waiter was fantastic and the food was real Cuban food, good experience

Mannyv

By Manuel V |

Good for anytime of day or night, from breakfast lunch or dinner you can't go wrong at islas canarias. Late night dinner after movie or a show great choice. Specialties in sandwiches like cuban sandwich my favorite and media noche are all excellent. Potages (bean soups) are also outstanding from lentils, red beans, black beans, chick peas, split peas caldo gallego and fabada with white beans are all favorites. But there is one thing that keeps me coming back to islas canarias on a regular basis for no reason at all and that is their world famous croquetas in ham or chicken. Hand made every day. Make sure you order some to go and be sure to order plenty cause they won't last. Don't leave without having desert arros con leche, flan, bread pudding.

Very Tasty Cuban Food

By Brent B |

Friends brought me to this restaurant on recent work trip to Miami. Extensive menu and although it seemed to be very busy, service was great. Shrimp in garlic sauce was tasty and grilled chicken, steak, and sausage was fantastic. This place may have the best black beans I've ever tasted. Would definitely recommend!

Cuban at its best

LOVE LOVE LOVE A perfect Cuban restaurant with the classic dishes. It is a must eat at for all - great staff, excellent food. Just do it!

Best croquettes in Miami

By Gonoyo9999 |

Always fresh and delicious cuban food. Therefore always packed. However, the wait is reasonable and your belly will be satisfied.

Great Paella

By acostajorge44 |

We pre-ordered paella for a group of seven and it was wonderful. Everything was well-cooked, including the rice. The shrimp and shellfish were fresh. The waiters kept filling our glasses with cold water and came around often.

Great Cuban food in a family atmosphere

By Bob B |

We had dinner tonight in one of my favorite family style Cuban restaurants in Miami. I have been here many times and I have never been disappointed. The steaks, fish, chicken, pork, maduros, rice and beans, cuban sandwiches, coffee, desserts are all super. The atmosphere is very plain, but its where many of the local Cuban people in the Kendall area go to eat.

Lunch

By Bethw60795 |

We went here for a lunch. I had tilapia in a lemon sauce. It was very good. It was accompanied by light rice. This was my first experience in a Cuban restaurant.

A good family place to eat

By Myra R |

Meal very good , good price for big family gathering , good service , very friendly people, a little loud

Customer Service is Horrible

By Bruce P |

I'm in that area every Saturday morning I have stopped by several times to get a cup of Coffee. You have about 5 people to take care of the customers each time I would need to beg for service. I do speak a little Spanish I'm always being overlooked by these servers. They do not acknowledge people of color ( Black American). I would still give them $3 in tips for $1 cup of coffee. So I decided that I would go across the street to there competition were I'm greeted with a smile and gladly would accept my money. To the owner of this restaurant my money looks like everyone else .

Best Croquetas on town!

By fatima217 |

Las mejores croquetas de Miami! And also the chickens Florentino is very good! Staff is nice is a very good cuban restaurant.

Ridiculously small portions.

I have always visited this restaurant with my family because the food is very tasty, abundant and good price but we went yesterday 22 June 2025 and asked for the usual and the portions have reduced them so much that it seems a diet of weigh watchers. Amazing, what a big disappointment. It's a shame because it's taste of food is still very rich but the portions ridiculously small. We decided we're not going anymore.

Good service but not good taste.

By Free Spirit |

The service was good, but the food tasted like Knorr broth 😱 The prices are very good compared to other restaurants, the waiters were friendly, but the food really did taste like chicken broth.

Must have the croquetas

By kmq2000 |

Sooo good. Real authentic Cuban food for a very affordable price. You have to try their ham croquetas. Cuban coffee is perfect too. We shared the frituras de bacalao, a few croquetas de jamón, the avocado salad and we each had their home made chicken soup. My husband also had his favorite dish, ropa vieja. He said it was very good too. Our lunch cost less than our breakfast in Miami Beach. It was so good we stopped here a again on the way to the airport as our last meal in Miami

Best Cuban Food!

By MrChrisAguilar |

You do not know good Cuban food in Miami unless you come to this place...they have been known forever and never disappoint!

Great food and service!

By G C |

I heard of how good the food is at Islas Canarias, I tried and I am very satisfied. The service is excellent, food is served fast , it is fresh and tastes SOOOOO good!. I definitely go back and try something else from the huge variety of dishes from the menu.

Good food. Nice Cuban atmosphere.

By Lydspot |

We'd had this restaurant recommended to us by several Cuban friends. We arrived in the middle of the afternoon, mid-week and were surprised by the crowd. Took this as a good sign of good food. And indeed the food was good but we were a little disappointed by the service. Don't get me wrong--the waiters were friendly but they sort of just forgot about us. No checking back to refill water glasses. No dessert offers. Long wait for the check.

Awful! Malo! De madre!

By aliciarealtor |

It's never been like this. Poor service. Poor food. Slow! Walked in to have to wait to be seated while the restaurant was half empty. They would simply pass by and not acknowledge us as if we were invisible. Taking the order took forever and getting the bread , appetizers and food was another long wait. Food was stale and substandard. I usually like it here but this left a bad taste in my mouth and all those other clients around us. And management nowhere to be seen.

Disappointing Cuban Cuisine – Not The Place Best In Here

By Carlitoways |

I decided to go to the restaurant with the family last thinking this was a great place to eat Cuban food but was I wrong. Readers Digest condensed version – I have being eating Cuban food my entire life, and I was very disappointed with the quality of the food at this restaurant. Maybe it was a bad day for them, but I will not return to this restaurant.

Lazaro!

By David D |

Ask for Lazaro! He's the best waiter I've ever had....and I'm 53 years old. Tell him David and Marie recommended him. The place has great food. Lazaro is there Mon - Sat after 6 pm.

Outstanding croquetas and quick breakfast!!

By Ritza121 |

This place gets REALLY busy and most of the staff lack any kind of common courtesy, especially at the walk up window, however, IMHO, they do have the BEST Cuban croquetas in Miami! Also, if you don't mind sitting at the counter area inside the restaurant and listening to the constant loud idiotic talk from "regulars", you can get a delicious hot and quick breakfast complete with tostadas and great cafe con leche!

2 restaurants with the same name

By Keith B |

One is Islas Canarias Restaurant; the other is Islas Canarias Cafe Restaurant which is a short distance away. We went to the cafe, which is unfortunate since they don't serve alcohol. It's in a strip mall far from Little Havana, and no one there speaks much English. They can't even answer questions about what's on the menu. Fortunately, the menu is in English and is pretty thorough and easy to understand. The ham croquettes (6) were delicious. For the entree, I got a Monday special--grilled salmon with a jelly sauce served with rice mixed with pork. It was good though a little salty. Shen got the sweet potato mixed with beef jerky-also good. They have a wide selection of desserts but they have no names on them and since they don't speak English they can't tell you what's in them, but both the ones we got were good.

Catch up lunch

By Sarushkaya |

Throughout the years this is a place we have come often, especially as a take out spot for Croquetas de Jamón & Sandwich Cubano. A lunch to catch up with family. Palomilla & Riñonada Steaks, Moros, Rice & Beans & Maduros. The Palomilla did not need any extra flavor, it was well seasoned. Natilla dessert was very good.. Materva for drinks. Service was attentive and prompt.

I hope it was just a fluke night

By Moradilla1953 |

I've been coming to Islas Canarias for years, as I live nearby. I'm always recommending it to others. I was born and raised Cuban, though I've lived in the Miami for 55 years, coming at the age of 7. I know what Cuban food should taste like. Hands down, their croquettes are the best in town (though I didn't try any tonight). It's funny how I came here for years, and took it for granted. It's always been one of my local favorite restaurants, and I never even thought to review it. It's where Cubans (and other Hispanics, plus some tourists) go to get great Cuban home-cooked comfort food. It always reminds me of the dishes my grandmother used to make for my family. So, tonight, I felt like having what I always have, which is the "bistec habanero". It's a thin Cuban steak, served with homemade crispy fried shoestring potatoes on top, along with chopped onions and parsley. You get one side dish, so I get white rice; this combination is how my grandma used to make this dish. I go at least once a month, and always order the same thing. Delicious! Tonight, for the first time EVER, I couldn't finish it, and didn't even bother to take the leftovers home. It was terrible. Fries were under-cooked and soggy, and as soon as they put the plate down in front of me, I smelled a fishy smell emanating from it. I believe this was due to one of two things: Either the steak and fries were fried in some oil where they had previously fried fish, or else, they've started using canola oil instead of the usual lard (or vegetable or corn oil with a little dab of lard) normally used in good old-school Cuban cooking. I have no qualms with the fact that canola is a much healthier option than lard; however, I don't go there to eat healthy. There's plenty of other places for that, especially in Miami. I go there for the occasional treat. The reason I think there may have been a recent change is, they've all-of-a-sudden started serving bread that looks more like baguettes, instead of the pieces of Cuban bread that were always served before (I have to say this was a definite improvement). They're also serving those with butter instead of the unhealthy buttery spread they were serving before (also an improvement). And there's an olive oil bottle on top of every table; that's new as well. Before, you'd always have to ask for olive oil. I was there about six weeks ago, so these appear to be pretty recent changes. So, I really think that part of what happened tonight is that they've suddenly decided to start serving healthier options. Admirable, but that's not why most folks go there to eat. And my husband's steak was tough in places, another first (he had the same thing as me, and agreed as to the fishy taste/smell). Even the white rice tasted different and didn't seem as delicious as always (I've always suspected they put a dab of lard in there as well, as they cook it). Overall, we were very disappointed tonight. I wanted to talk to the manager, but my husband discouraged me, because it embarrasses him. I hope folks start noticing and complaining, but unfortunately, most folks don't say anything; they just don't return. It's funny; you can be going to the same place for years and having great experiences without giving it a second thought. But you can have one bad experience, and it'll make you forget all the good ones. I'm going to go one more time; if the same thing happens, I won't return. Service was fine, ambiance was fine, my only complaint tonight was the food. I really hope it was just a one-time thing.

Best. Croquettas. Ever.

By Geisha O |

I have never really had a full meal at this location but we will sit for an hour in Miami traffic just for the Croquettas! They are the very best, imo.

Good cuban food

By Canesbiggdogg |

Went for dinner with the family. The girls love the ham croquettas and we order several as well as take some home. The food is always good the service is hit and miss.

CHANGE FOR BAD FFOD & SERVICES.

By Grace C |

was late (9.30pm) pass by only for a sandwich and coffee, as for 2 croquetes Made to the order) employee said not, you has to take this one ,i bring it 1/2 hour ago. , very rude ,tlalking with friends, ask for coffee 2 times, she said i tell you wait, (assistant customers (friend) came after me) they are rush to close window....this is a second time happen. food has big change for poor...never again..$10. for this ....

Why has the quality changed?!?

By luckymira |

I live in the neighborhood so it’s easy for me to frequent this restaurant when I want Cuban food. However, both my husband and I agree that the quality has changed in the recent past. For example, my husband always gets the “Corte Americano steak” which is a thicker cut top sirloin. He asks for it medium but they just can’t get it right. The past two times they have over cooked it to where it is well done. I like to get the “palomilla” which is supposed to be a Cuban style top sirloin but they actually served me a top round which is a different cut as well as sub standard. I’m super bummed about this because now I’ll have to go somewhere else when I need to get Cuban food! ☹️

Great casual place for some excellent cuban food.

By jtrot52339 |

You have to be looking for this place to find it. It certainly is not one of the trendy places with celebrity ownership that seem to be so popular in Miami these days. This restaurant has no pretensions. You walk into a simple place with clean tables and a family feel. The wait staff is easily identifiable as they are all wearing a standard slacks and Guayabera outfit. Be ready to practice whatever Spanish you know as it is likely to be the first language tried. This trip I tried the Arroz on pollo - which was excellent as usual. The texture of the rice was perfect with just the right amount of flavor. My date had the lechon asado with yuca. In her words "best lechon and yuca EVER". The sangria is also worth it. And if you are lucky you will get serenaded by a one man show that somehow is a cross between Elvis and Julio Iglesias with a little Barry White thrown in.

Best Cuban food and croquetas

By Amyriver |

This is a great place, the food is amazing. Is always full, but is a big restaurant with plenty of space. The croquetas are the best ones in Miami.

Good Cuban food

By William R |

I am a local Miamian so I know good Cuban food. This restaurant never disappoints. The food is always great. The service is also wonderful.

Disappointing anniversary dinner.

By cookiejorge . |

Brought my husband for our 43rd anniversary and the food didn't come close to previous visits. He had the lamb shanks which were pretty fatty and barely warm. I had the Vaca frita (steak style rather than shredded). It had great taste, but again barely warm. We also made the mistake of accepting a table close to the doors which meant every few minutes we'd get a blast of hot air coming at us. Service was very good, however.

Quick Snack, Maybe Not

By R M |

So we decided to get a quick snack since we are rarely in this area. So we ordered some of their awesome ham croquetas, a sandwich (Frita Cuban Burger)for our son and picadillo with rice and beans. All the food was delicious. You really can't go wrong with any of their food! Since they have a drive thru we figured it would be faster. I guess I was wrong! They took my order, I paid, then I waited. And waited. And waited. Almost 20 to get our food! That's crazy! Great food, but I'll be going inside and eating in next time!

Great Cuban Food Subpar Service

By Luis R |

Visited this establishment with relatives from out of town for a fine Cuban meal and everyone was very impressed with the quality of the food. Service was lacking and had to ask various times to have my water glass refilled. If you don't mind this small issue then I fully recommend it. The food is fresh and plentiful and for sure you will not leave this place hungry. Good family atmosphere and perfect for small children.

Good food

By Marlen E |

Good food, good price, and nice service. Was my first time there and I will return. I recommend this restaurant.

Excellent, Fast, Courteous, Fresh

By Qba1 |

From the moment I came in I was greeted the food came quickly the service staff is excellent our water was refilled our plates were taken away what else can I say I highly recommend it.

Excelent service and outstanding Cuban fare

By Onemiamiman |

We showed up late at night following a Philharmonic Concert and not expecting a lot from this unassuming, suburban, store front establishment, but boy...were we surprised! The service was 10 stars, on a a 5 star scale and the food, simply incredible. This place is worth the drive even if you are miles away. We lived it and will find a way to plan another outing to a nearby place to devour their Malanga fritters.

Father's Day breakfast

By Maritza R |

We had a group of 17 , and they tried real hard to accommodate us. The service was excellent and the food delicious as always.

So Disappointing...

By John J |

I've eaten at Islas Canarias many times over the years. The food is pretty good, not gourmet, but good enough to go back. While there have been times where things went wrong, today was my absolute worst experience ever. I ordered on the phone, to be picked up, at 602pm. Two items; grilled chicken breast and a Spanish Omelet. I arrived at 645 to pick up the order and was told it wasn't ready. I again asked at 700pm and told the same thing. At 720pm I was told there was some confusion in the kitchen. I finally got my order at 730pm. Totally unacceptable. No real reasons were given, no one came to try to make this right. To top it off, I get home and my chicken is tough and cold, my wife's Omelet barely warm. I'm not at all happy with the way this turned out.

Bustling takeout and inside dining.

By ampanmangal |

This place came highly recommended to us. The location is unassuming, and not in a big tourist area, but it was quite busy at 2:00pm on a Thursday afternoon. There are three different take-out windows, plus a large restaurant for seating inside. I recommend the Lechon Asado. One person in our party had just the Chicken Noodle soup. It was delicious with Cuban spices to make it very interesting. I feel like a traitor saying this, but we were disappointed in the croquetas. Maybe they had been talked up too much, but it wasn't our favorite.

Lunchtime break

By Carrie I |

While in the Miami area we searched for the top Cuban Restaurants in the area and IC came highly recommended. The restaurant was clean and large with booth, table, and counter seating. The menu had a variety of different Cuban dishes that were all delicious. The service however was not that great. Our waitress did not write down our order correctly and brought items out in batches vs all together. She waited until we were almost done with our meal to tell us they did not have yellow rice and forgot my nieces hamburger entirely. Overall, the experience was good though and most importantly the food was great.

Best Ajiaco and Ham Croquettes in Miami

By Raquelita8 |

Delicious food. On Mondays their special is "Ajiaco" which is a stew made with cured meats and root vegetables. It is delicious ! Also a must to try is their ham croquettes which are homemade and the best in town. Their cuban coffee is also tops. Prices very reasonable.

Dinner for my daughter

By Canesbiggdogg |

My daughter is leaving to Europe and we took her out to dinner. We had several appetizers and main courses. The ham croquettes are the best in town and their food was excellent. Our server Susset was great

Forget your diet

By Gretel G |

We go to Islas Canarias whenever we're in the area. None of us have ever been dissatisfied with the food. It is all delicious with generous portions. That said, you MUST order the croquettes (croquetas in Spanish). They are truly home made style , and I've been to many Cuban and Spanish restaurants in my life --nobody makes them like this place! Guaranteed ! Everyone to whom I've introduced Canarias' croquettes has said the same thing "I can't have them anywhere else after trying them here ." I recommend the Crema Catalana for dessert (it's The Spanish version of creme brûlée ).

My Favorite

By c g |

I've reviewed Versailles, El Rincon and La Caretta. They all have similar menus and pricing but this is my favorite. The food is a level above the others in taste and quality. e.g. hot rolls just out of the oven. Delicious sauces not available in the others. Allthough all serve maduros (baked plantain) they do it better here. Quantities are huge and I always end up taking home a box with enough for another complete meal. I would give them five stars but Versailles does have the best bakery.

Best Croquetas in Miami

By IamPlatinum |

I've tried them all. I've scoured every Cuban bakery, cafeteria window and fancy restaurant in Miami in search of the best croquetas outside of Havana. Let me save you the time, money and calories and let you in on the Magic City's biggest secret... Islas Canarias has the best croquetas out there! In fact, it's such a well known secret among locals that they sell thousands daily ("literally" as they say in Miami).

Great food, Nice portions and Economical

By mrsbiggs01 |

Food was very nice seasoned, home cooked like. Service is good and the prices are great, you can take the whole family and you don't need to be in a budget....

You can't go wrong with Islas Canarias!

By PachiRatings |

If you want great Cuban food, you can never go wrong with Islas Canarias! It is the best family restaurant to enjoy a great cuban dish like "vaca frita, bistec empanizado, pork anyway you like it". The service is always excellent too. Very affordable. Start out with tostones rellenos or their world famous croquetas!!!

Smaller Portions, Still Better Than Most

By celainej1 |

I went to Islas Canarias tonight for dinner and having been there before, knew what to expect. The waitress was pleasant and engaging and took the time to actually talk to me. I wasn't just another tip for her and it's nice to see people for whom money isn't the holy grail. I had deep fried pork chunks with rice and black beans. The food was really good but the portion seemed a little on the small side (see photo). If that's the only negative I can come up with, then I'll certainly be back.

Authentic Cuban Flavors Worth the Wait!

By Esme L |

If you're craving authentic Cuban food, this spot is a must-visit! Their ropa vieja, lechon asado, and croquetas are delicious, and the friendly staff make the experience even better. Just avoid the drive-thru—it’s quicker to dine in and soak up the great atmosphere.

Two people, 2 meals ordered, only one served.

By George A |

We wanted a nice dinner. It didnt happen. After long time waiting, they said that the meat that we ordered could not be served because was in bad shape. We choosed another meat. It never came. They brought my fish and nothing for her. Good people, nice manners but something in the kitchen failed......

Iconic

By Carl-Frederick F |

This little gem does live up to its reputation and all the rumors that I have heard .simple and good .felt like a smaller Versailles .if in the area ,do stop by for croquettas

Good food, ho hum service

By epuya |

We were a group of 4 and then later 2 adults and a toddler joined us. The waiter was pleasant, however, I have had better service. The croquetas were tasty, the black bean soup was very good, as were the Plantanos Maduros. a couple of people ordered Grilled Skirt Steak (Churrasco), and crispy fried Plantains which were good. I had the fettuccine alfredo with shrimp which was excellent. I could not pass up the opportunity to have their flan with vanilla ice cream which was delicious! The restaurant is handicap friendly and there was a high chair for the toddler. If I were in the neighborhood I would go back to try it once again.

Absolutely marvelous food

By daolbr |

Zarzuella de mariscos! If it's your first visit do not loose your time, ask for this delight. Service is very good and prices really affordable. Double beer at happy hour. For kids, they can share an authentic huge Cuban Sandwich for only $6. I HAVE TO COME BACK TOMORROW!!!

Love this place I know about Cuban food I grow up eating it This place makes excellent food very good service and try the croquettes no place in this town make it better Not even my sisters home made can compare

The absolute best Cuban food in Miami

By Mario L |

In my humble opinion this restaurant is the absolute best Cuban restaurant in Miami. The food is great, always fresh, and the amounts are huge. The sandwiches are out of this world. All the bean soups are fabulous, the black, red, white, garbanzo beans are the best, and the lentil soup is superb

Visiting Miami

By lisamarieclarktx |

A friend of my sons recommended this place when we asked for good Cuban food. I was impressed. Food was flavorful and restaurant was very clean. We did have language barrier issues but we got what we ordered and left totally satisfied! Will go again on out next visit to the area

Ripoff Sandwich

By Alejandro A |

I went yesterday i passby thru driving i order two cuban stake sandwich so when we bring back home first the bread were burned liked charcoal no tomato a little piece of les half stake we had to throw out. Ti the dog each cuban sandwiches 8.00 dollar its was a ripoff i will never go back no more

Rude!!

By Mily L |

This used to be my favorite place to buy croquetas I live out of state so my in laws bring them to me when they come. This time we received chicken ones instead of ham and when I called to let them know they were extremely rude specially the manager Abel. He even told me to take them back like if I live around the corner he was super unprofessional. Definitely never going back of recommending this restaurant to anyone!

Traditional Cuban cuisine. The best in Miami.

By J8227ZQrobertt |

This is my second visit to Islas Canarias and it's consistently good. It reminds me of my grandmother's home cooking. Not only is the food good but the portions are filling. Consistently good and great service.

Delicious cuban food!

By Daniel P |

I visited with some friends last night. The previous evening had visited Versailles cuban restaurant so I had something to compare against. The food was delicious. I ordered a sampler plate, and was recommended the croquetas (croquettes) which we ordered as an appy. They were great. Little fried finger like food filled with ham or chicken and maybe some potato. Tasty and non greasy. In my sampler Criollo, it had roast pork, shredded flank steak, croquette, rice, black beans, yuca and plantains. Yuka is the only thing that is a little strange and not my favourite. It is basically the same vegetable as cassava root. The plantains are like a little dessert on the plate... Lightly sweeted and browned... delicious. The flank steak is called Ropa Vieja which I could eat a ton of. Hard to fully describe, but if in Miami try it out and you won't be disappointed. Miami is the place for Cuban outside of Cuba.

Best Cuban/Spanish Cuisine at great price

By Marti G |

We went here after a UBER taxi driver raved about this place. He knew Miami well. I asked him about a good Cuban Restaurant as I missed Cuban food since being away from my birthplace He mentioned Islas Canarias enthusiastically. He sold us. So, we did go and take our neice and nephew (for a birthday celebration). The menu was so long and had so many wonderful items it was hard to choose. I knew I wanted the "Croquettes" and ordered them as appetizer along with the plantains, (the small crisp ones not the sweet). We did the get sweet ones as a side dish. The marinated skirt steak with the mashed plantains with pork rinds was very good, as was my neice's YUCCA veggie side dish. We tried each others dishes & was really so tasty. It was just what we had been looking for. The menu is in spanish and english. Our neice and nephew knew what dishes were good and recommended . I wish I could have tried even more, but next time. The pitcher of Sangria for the 4 of us was perfect. HIGHLY recommend.

cuban food

By pepepinga |

family own restaurant. The owner spend the whole day there always on top of everything. In my opinion the best cuban restaurant in Miami. Family oriented and the food is always excellent and fresh. It gets loud at times as any family oriented restaurant gets. Good cuban and Spanish comfort food.

Cuban food

By Sonia N |

Very taste Cuban food but the oil they use for dressing is not olive oil and this in important for me. Vaca frita is so good. Palomilla American style was not good, to much fat on it. Over all, you can go for lunch or dinner if you feel lazy to cook. Good friendly service.

Wow

By Jim S |

Had the pleasure of hosting a team of local leaders here based on their recommendation and the place is GREAT! I was very impressed from the service to the cleanliness and of course the quality of the food!

Dinner

By Kate J |

Awesome food! I had the shrimp and chicken paella which was tasty and the shrimp juicy. The fried plantains were good as well. My husband had an amazing pork chop Cuban style. The pork was flavorful and came with very good black beans, rice and yucca. The kids each ordered from the kids menu which was grilled cheese with curly fries and a really good looking cheese burger. We finished our dinner off with cuban coffee. We don't speak Spanish but they had a translator. You have to check the place out! Close to 41.

Excellent food, excellent service!!!

By marielena |

This is one of my favorite places to eat, but if I have to recommend a special dish, that would be "Vaca Frita" it is excellent

Wonderful Lunch!

By Jessica B |

My wife and I dined at Islas before our flight out of Ft. Lauderdale after attending a wedding this month, and the food was delicious! I had the carne asada al vino and it was honestly the BEST pot roast I have ever tasted in my 31 years! It was succulent, rich, and creamy, and it paired well with the Cuban coffee that I ordered. My wife had the Cuban sandwich but admittedly experienced entree envy. We will definitely return when traveling through Miami again! Thank you, Islas!

Anthony Bourdain should be ashamed

By Franco T |

After having seen Bourdain's CNN show featuring Miami we just had to have one of those great looking medianoche sandwiches. We're a bit nuts and drove 3 hours to the Islas Canarias location he filmed from. The medianoche sandwiches we were served were disgusting. The pork was mostly just fat. The ham was okay, but fatty also. The sandwich was described as juicy on the show, but there was nothing juicy about any of the 5 medianoche sandwiches we ordered. The taste was horrible. What a waste. Bourdain, as a chef who should obviously know a good sandwich, should be ashamed to have recommended that place. I get nauseous just thinking about that sandwich.

Great Cuban food

By Ivor M |

This place was recommended by a local and it did not disappoint. I had the Arroz Moro (rice with black beans) and the cordon bleu with their croquettes. It was great. Only downside is that soft drinks don’t come with refills. The staff mostly speaks only Spanish but it isn’t a big deal when it comes to ordering. Overall good experience.

Great cuban latin flavor

By ecu_traveler |

For sure one of the best authentic cuban restaurants. Great flavor, very attentive service, lots of spanish if you have troubles with english ordering. Overall nice place, great food. Ive gone there a few time now, ill keep going everytime i go to Miami.

I won't go back !

By Adela C |

The last time I went with my aunt was 6 years ago. Neither my aunt nor myself liked the food. My cousins from Houston came to Miami and were desperate for good Cuban food. I had the bad idea of taking them to Islas Canarias on Coral Way & 137th Ave today and none of us liked the food. That restaurant will never see me again. In addition to the bad food, they claim to have the best "croquetas". I ordered 3 and they were the worse croquetas I have ever had in Miami. I felt bad for taking my cousins to this restaurant. Really disappointing !! A waist of money !!

Soul Food for Cubans

By cflippen |

Met my Cuban Cousins at this restaurant and gorged on traditional Cuban food that I do not have available in Virginia. We enjoyed traditional dishes such as Vaca Frita, Ropa Vieja, Masas de Puerco, black beans and rice, and sweet plantains. Reasonably prtand delicious.

A nightmare on Miami

By JorgeL2 |

Went there this past Sunday with friends. What a nightmare !!! Very noisy, people screaming, kids crying. Poor service. I started with a Caldo gallego (navy bean soup) Spanish style. It was too salty and water down with maximum of 10 -12 beans, not exaggerating. Main course took approximately an hour, when ask our waiter, why it takes that long, he stated because the Filet Mignon came out too small, they decided to make another one. Finally our food arrive, and Fiilet Mignon was over cook, cut in half and didn't even look even closed to be a Mignon. It was send back and my friend refused to try anything else. Tasajo was terrible, too salty and tough. Shrimp Termidor was weird, Palomilla Steak was dry and tough as well and Chicken Parmina was just OK. Not planning to come back after this bad experience

Great food, reasonable prices, wonderful service

By John J |

Had two excellent meals while visiting Miami in July. The Croquetas de Jamon are to die for. If you try nothing else, get the croquetas. We enjoyed the Sampler Criollo, Lechón Asado, Baby Churrasco, Mojitos, Flan, Rice, Beans, Moros, Maduros and of course, the bread. It was all delicious and the servings were very generous. We were the only Anglos in the restaurant and the staff made us feel very welcome. We struggled a bit with the language but between my Spanish and our server's English we got exactly what we wanted. Yes . . . I'll be back!

Dissapointing tasajo

By AJS-NY |

Went recently with a group of friends and was disappointed with the tasajo I ordered....somewhat flavorless and too dry to the point of tasting old. I know what good tasajo should taste like. I am Cuban and tasajo is one of my favorite dishes. Islas Canarias is a good place to have good Cuban food, though. Their breakfasts and sandwiches are very good, service is prompt and cordial and atmosphere is non-pretentious and adequate. Their croquetas are good as well...just don't ask for tasajo.

Good Cuban Breakfast

By Canesbiggdogg |

We went here on a Sunday morning for breakfast and it was very good. We had the desayuno canarios which had 2 eggs, sausage or bacon, home or french fries, cuban toast and cafr con leche. The food was made to order abd very good. We also ordered ham croquettas which are the best in town. It is a definte return.

Excellent Cuban Food at Islas Canarias

By Mari E |

If you are interested in trying excellent Cuban food, try Islas Canarias. There is a great variety of food, excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner for a moderate price. There is a take out window if you do not have time to sit at the restaurant.Employees are great and the food is fresh. Check out their daily specials . Excellent fruit shakes and Cuban coffee after a delicious coconut flan! Great for families!

Great croquettes service not so great

By JanetGP5 |

I have been here several times with my family usually come here for the sandwiches and homemade croquettes. Food is okay, croquettes are awesome. Servers on the other hand take too long for everything.

Last visit was only fair.!

By Kahuna2454 |

Don’t know if they havenew help in the kitchen but our last visit was very dissapointing. We have been there often and it was always excellent, but it was an off night.u the ham croquettes are delicious! Service is always good.

Much more than croquetas

If you are in Miami it’s worth heading west of the city to get your Cuban fix. Traditional Cuban fare, good service and still reasonably priced. Parking can be a challenge during peak hours just keep looking someone is pulling out soon of the busy shopping center. Enjoy

Dirty Restrooms and Lackluster Service

By FloridaGirl74 |

The first time was the last. I was greeted within a few minutes of being seated but the server that greeted me did not take my drink order. Another five minutes went by before I was greeted again and asked what I wanted to drink. I ordered at the same time which consisted of two chicken croquetas and a palamillo steak with onions and morro. It took about 15 minutes for my food to arrive. The chicken croquetas had great flavor but they were warm and soggy. A croqueta should be hot and crisp. The palamillo came out a few minutes later, but it was so thin and overcooked that it was hard to cut. It was extremely salty and greasy. Not impressed. The most frustrating part of my meal was how long it took to have my water glass refilled. There were at least six servers leaning against a wall near the bar that were within five feet of my table during the duration of my meal. All they did was converse amongst themselves rather than actually serving patrons. One of the older female servers was complaining loudly to another about how close someone had moved one of her tables to another, and she just went on and on about it. She also had so much perfume on that I could taste it when she walked by my table. She spent a lot of time talking to her friends at the table behind me. It's too bad she couldn't refill my glass of water. After I ate some of my meal, I asked for the check. I used the restroom prior to my departure. A restroom says a lot about a business. Cleanliness is number one. It looked like someone had rolled the place and it had not been cleaned in a long time. It was one of the nastiest restrooms I had seen in a while. There was soiled toilet tissue and urine on the floor. In addition to the restroom, the roof was leaking next to one of the dining tables. I certainly wouldn't eat next to a clear bucket full of dirty water that had leaked through the roof and ceiling tile. Very nasty! Where is the health department??? I can only imagine what the kitchen looked like. My overall experience was a two. I would never recommend this place to anyone. It's just nasty. One of those idle servers could have easily cleaned that restroom but it was obvious the management doesn't care.

The worst food

Is really disappointing to see how a restaurant from good turns to awful their food and service is terrible. Their portions are smaller everyday. Their croquetas are no longer the best on the contrary they are tiny and stick to the roof of the mouth. I am not sure if the chef is not the same but for sure the food does not have the same ingredients or taste. The ladies whom attend the drive thru are rude and don't even pack the food accordingly. When calling on the phone to place an order they answer and leave you hanging for the longest time and when they finally pick up they hang up the phone! From the two locations the bakery on Bird is much better as honestly the one in Coral Way is terrible. As for me I will never visit either one there are a lot better restaurants such as the Ronconcito Latino on 152 and Sundett that one portion feeds two and the food and treatment is much better!

Best croquettes

Went for Cuban delights, pastelitos, empanadas, cafe and croquettes. Their croquettes are exceptionally delicious and if in the area well worth stopping in just for it.

Great food, prices and excellent service

Islas Canarias has been around for a long time and the reason for its success is the combination of excellent food, abundant portions and outstanding service. This is a neighborhood restaurant with a host who is an outstanding professional as well as the serving staff. It may be a bit out of the way for Miami tourists, but the trip is well worth it.

A lovely lunch at this Spanish gem!

My wife and I had a fantastic lunch at the SW 137th Ave. location. My wife had the special which was salmon baked with a delicious strawberry sauce and fresh rosemary. I had the chicken steak with onions and had yucca as a side. We started off with croquettas and had Mamey batidos which also were fantastic. Great place and lively atmosphere! Suni served us and was excellent.

This is where the Cubans have

This is where the Cubans have their breakfast. Judging from the line, it is where everyone has their breakfast! Order the croquetas, they make the best!

Croquettas

Best croquettes ever! Also orsered the Filet Mignon with Risotto special. The meat was tender and quite tasty however the risotto was lacking.

A real mom & pop restaurant!

We started off by sharing a Tostones Rellenos de Camarones. It's a shrimp& tomato sauce based dished serve in cups formed from plantain. Very tasty. Next I had the Sampler Criollo. The meat (pork & beef) was tender and the portion huge. I found the ham croquettes a bit mushy. My wife had the Cazuelita de Mariscos which was also very tasty, although some of the seafood (maybe calamari) was a bit tough. The black bean rice and fried plantains were very good as well. The portions were probably good for 4 people overall as we left a lot behind and had no room for desert. The staff speaks primarily, if not only Spanish, so ask for an English speaking waiter (waitress) if required. It is in the Tamiami part of Miami in case you can't find it on your GPS. A bit out of the way but worth the effort if you want something less commercial. For the price the portions and taste were outstanding.

Stopped in at Islas Canarias after seeing Anthony Bourdains show. The service was excellent although they were packed wall to wall with customers. The food was fresh and very tasty even though I live in a diffrent county its worth the 45 minute drive !

Amazing Croquettes!

Almost every time I spend the night at the GF's families house in Miami we end up at Islas for breakfast. Their bistec a caballo is amazing. You get a nice sized piece of palomilla meat topped with sautéed onions and served with eggs cooked your way, Cuban toast and coffee. Add in a couple of croquettas de jamon and you've got yourself one of the best breakfasts in Miami! Their sandwiches are very fresh and made to order not like many places that have them premade for what seems to be weeks in advance! Service is always prompt and on point. Good job at a gem of Cuban restaurant in Miami!

This place has mediocre food and terrible service. They could care less if you come or go. I had to force a waitress to take our order after 45 min. This place deserves to go bankrupt! Parking is terrible. Buyer beware !

Excellent!

The Best Serice

Yesterday I passed by the drive through. I was told to park after placing my order. After 20 minutes of waiting I went inside to ask for the manager and the status of my food. A young gentleman brought my food out fast and it was accompanied with complimentary mariquitas which were a very pleasant surprise. He apologized profusely and explained the reason why my food took long. He suggested that I call ahead for my food to save time or inconveniences and to ask for him personally so he can take care of my order. He told me his name is Tony. He was very attentive land I’m thankful to him. Thank you very much!
