Pleasant New Addition to Austin Steak Houses

By Scott_Hendler_Austin |

Food was excellent. Servings were right size, not too large so you wasted food left over. Service was attentive and friendly.

Absolutely Disappointing and Completely Unacceptable

By Gene B |

After a long day of traveling, my two colleagues and I were looking forward to a nice steak dinner. Due to the late hour, J Prime was the only option available, so that’s where we went. Their website advertised that they were open until 10:30pm. We arrived at 10:10pm. We were greeted by a smiling host/doorman who held the door for us and welcomed us to the restaurant. He asked if we preferred a table in the dining room or a high top in the bar. We chose the bar, since the host said the full menu was available. Several minutes after being seated, we were greeted by our waitress, who took our drink order while we reviewed our dinner options. So far, so good. The waitress brought our drinks and asked if we wanted to put some appetizers in. We told her we were ready to order our meals. She told us she’d be “right back”. About 10 minutes later, a gentleman came to tell us that he “may possibly have some bad news.” What he meant was, “I have bad news.” He told us that the chef had already closed the kitchen down, but we could order “sliders and fries”. Ummm….no. He told us he’d go check and see what could be done. About 10 minutes after that (now 30 minutes after we arrived), the manager came over and half-heartedly apologized and gave us some story about how, event though the advertised closing time was 10:30pm, they “really closed at 10pm”. As if that was some excuse? He tap danced a little, and told us that because they used mesquite for grilling, the coals had already cooled but if we really wanted, HE would go to the kitchen and grill us some filet mignon (we all wanted NY Strip), and *maybe* he could make us some macaroni and cheese. But we couldn’t have any salad (the chef had already thrown it all out) or anything else on the menu. Because he would have to go so far out of his way for us, he said it would take “at least 30 minutes” for him to cook us a meal none of us actually wanted. We asked if there would be any discounts given for the extreme inconvenience. He said no, we would have to pay full price ($75 for an A la Carte 6oz filet). I laughed at him as I got up to go find a restaurant that actually valued our business. How completely ridiculous is it that their website advertises one closing time, while their management apparently does whatever they want with no regard for their customers? Why weren’t we told when we walked through the door that the kitchen was already closed? Why didn’t the waitress give us ANY indication that the chef had closed up shop for the night? Why the hell would anyone be willing to accept paying full price for a meal other than what they wanted, prepared by someone other than a professional chef? I was supremely disappointed with this restaurant, its staff and management. For the prices I saw on their menu, I expected far, FAR better. I will never be back

The evening started out rocky, but the attentiveness of the management team made it an unforgettable dinner and J. Prime experience. We enjoyed everything.

We felt like a King & Queen!

I know J Prime from San Antonio and was so fired up to see they opened in Austin! I took my fiancée this past Sunday for a special date night. We met Miguel the second we walked in. From the moment we arrived we felt like Queen & King, it was like they were waiting for us. And it was 5 star all the way through! Miguel is such a good guy. He runs the show and makes sure the patrons feel welcome and comfortable. We literally felt like we made a friend. That’s saying a lot with just one dinner! Such kudos to him. He represents the place and you can tell just by connecting with him that everything was going to be grand! Jasmine our server was fabulous and did not steer us wrong! She was attentive and just lovely! She was excellent! The food? Was OMG delicious!!!!! Their summer salad special was so so good! We are foodies and have dined at many steakhouses and my man LOVES a good steak!! This wasn’t just good. His J Prime ribeye was right up there at the top of the top! So major thumbs up! Also I have to give a shout out to the Brussels Sprouts! So creatively done and delicious! Complements to the chef and their staff! Oh and the wagyu beef appetizer with a sizzling hot stone is to die for! Then the dessert menu in itself is a fascinating discussion piece. Such a wide array of amazing sounding choices- you have to order even if you are full. We went for the Bananas Foster made by the lovely gentleman who dazzled us with his culinary skills and created amazing scents with the homemade caramel. It was quite the show to watch and it tasted just WOW!!!! The whole experience was amazing and we feel excellent value too for what you get! The vibe and design of the place is upscale, elegant and beautiful. Their birthday balloons as also so creative and elegant! This is not a traditional stuffy steakhouse at all. You feel elevated and comfortable! It was their one year anniversary and they celebrated with complimentary champagne too. Also a big shout out to Michelle the banquet manager. J Prime will be represented Oct 25th 2023 at the Austin Film Festival Food and Film Fundraising Party raising money for young filmmakers. We are so excited to have them participate, we are honored they will showcase their skills at the event! Also they have a $500 gift card up for auction at our event too so you don’t want to miss that! You cab Check it all out at the Film & Food Fundraising Party website. Thx you once again J Prime we will be back asap!

As always…. A roaring WOW

Not only do I appreciate J Prime’s consistency in their 5 star service and elegant Austin vibe, I appreciate J Prime’s dedication to the community, their active participation in fundraiser’s and supporting local community endeavors, and the fact that Miguel - their GM is quite literally the best GM I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting! J Prime cares about their clientele and welcomes them like family, and treats them like Queens and Kings!

J Prime? YES!

At an Austin Film Society event, by Motivate Pictures, I met Miguel Farias, General Manager of J Prime Steakhouse, Austin. On Mothers' Day, 2024, I took my beloved wife there for Mothers' Day brunch. As you may imagine, it was very busy...yet the courteous, attentive, personal service was remarkable. Manny, our waiter was a gem. The superb quality food was prepared and presented excellently. If you appreciate delightful ambiance, gastronomic greatness, and nonpareil service, then I highly recommend J Prime Steakhouse, Austin.

On top

Vegetarians go your way 😉 The J Prime is the realm of meat , at the same time in a steak house you can expect nothing else. The restaurant is design and quiet , the first impression is super positive. Then on the plate we are really on top. The meats are really wonderful (watch out for your requests on cooking , I recommend you to order a cooking a notch below your expectations, quite to start again in the kitchen ). The accompaniments are varied (vegetables vary and french fries of course. ) A nice wine list , I recommend the fine South African Zinfandel that are at an affordable price and frankly they pair very well with red meats. In addition we are on the top of the basket of the steack house , count with the wine between 150$ - 200$ per person.

Favorite Restaurant in Austin

We celebrated my mom's surprise birthday over this last weekend at J-Prime. My brother and his fiancée flew in and J-Prime helped accommodate our surprise by seating my brother and his fiancée early at the table so we were able to perfectly set up the surprise factor for my mom and dad. Additionally at the same dinner, J-Prime helped prepare a surprise gender reveal for my wife and I. J-Prime's staff worked with my wife's sister to prepare a dessert with the gender reveal so that none of us at the table had to know the result beforehand. It was perfectly handled and the staff worked hard to handle this unique request. Shout out to Nick as our primary server. Food and service continue to be top-notch (this was our 3rd visit). It's my favorite restaurant in Austin!

When your bartender is awesome

This place is awesome for happy hour 4-7. Great prices on drinks and apps during this timeframe. Our bartender was one of the best servers we’ve ever had.

Top notch delicious!

Celebrated wedding anniversary here- noted on our last minute reservation. We were greeted with a rose and a card at the table and friendly attentive service from start to finish! Cocktails were beautiful and reasonably priced. Wine was half off on Sundays which we didn’t know ahead of time, but because of this we indulged in a nice Brunello Di Montalcino. We were presented with a delicious amuse bouche that set the tone for the meal. Started with lobster bisque- it was very rich in flavor but only had one small piece of lobster as garnish and none throughout the bisque itself. Main course was a 60-day aged tomahawk that was cooked to perfection with a nice presentation. We were offered complimentary dessert and chose pineapple carrot cake- this was literally the largest slice of cake I’ve ever been served! Very tasty and went well with our after dinner Irish coffees. Again, great service and would definitely recommend!

Great food, terrible music

By Maria E |

I was really looking forward to this steakhouse especially after eating terrible steaks on a cruise ship for a week! The steak was great! I asked for an extra char and it was pretty good. The tartar was good. Brussels sprouts were great! But the mushrooms were just plain mushrooms where our friends at another table got creamy mushrooms. Nothing like what we had. The ambiance … the music was terrible. It was hip hop. Nothing what should be played at a steakhouse.

Great Choice and there are many choices

We wanted a fine dinner and chose the restaurant because we were staying across the street. Our server was Austin. The stadff was welcoming from the front door. Very atttentive and professional service. The managaer stopped by the table. It was our anniversary so they gave my wife a red rose, and gave us a special dessert. The meal portions were large and the food was excellent. I had kabobs and my wife the filet. The brussels sprouts and baked potato were also excellent.
