Local Spot In San Pedro

By StacyB121212 |

We live in San Pedro and decided to try a local spot we had heard good things about. I can't stop thinking about how good the stuffed pork chop was- we all had it and everyone loved it! Old school, cozy place, good service and a perfect place to take my parents. They were very nice about working with my mom's food allergies too. We tend not to eat dinner out much but I would definitely go back and definitely recommend if in the area.

Great Find

By skychaserCalgary |

Friends of ours introduced us to J. Trani's for dinner recently...what an interesting neighborhood restaurant. Lots of locals there the evening we visited. The staff was very professional and attentive; service was excellent. We started with the Trani salad and the arugula and strawberry salad - delicious - but a dinner plate size! Our mains consisted of the veal chop and the fish of the day, which happened to be swordfish and Colorado rack of lamb....all done to perfection and excellent in every way. Unfortunately there was no room for dessert, just coffee. Would love to come back another time and try some more mouthwatering items from their menu.

Squid Rings

I have been here a couple times. The bar tender has a awesome attitude. The waiters are quick with the meal. The chefs in the back know how to cook up a 5 star meal Thanks for the awesome experience 5/5

Dinner with friends

By LARRY H |

I always enjoy going to Trani's for a meal. It's not just a meal. It's enjoying my limited time with family and friends that I don't see very often. It's an event!!! It's eating delicious food done right, then going around different tables to say hello and have a quick conversation and catch up with their lives. That porchetta dinner was so delicious and my pasta was aldente, the way I like it and eat it over in Italy. I always leave there feeling satisfied and loved. I'll be back very soon!!!

Delicious dinner at Trani's

By DebSkiPC |

We had an especially delicious dinner at Trani's. The fish of the day was bass... YUMMY! My date had the pasta with the short rib sauce... double YUMMY! We dined in the bar area and had great service.

Great service

Very pleasant evening. We were in the area to take my son to college and stumbled upon Trani's. The service was great and friendly and the food was good. We will likely return when we are in the area.

DeliciousFood, Intimate Atmosphere

By Anthony S |

Our meal was excellent . The pasta was cooked al dente, as it should be. The Bolognais sauce was incredible. The servers were more than friendly and extremely attentive to our needs. The atmosphere is intimate without feeling claustrephobic, and the entire place is quiet enough to comfortably hold a dinner table conversation. We will, most definitely, be back!

Great lunch

By kasfdave |

We sat at the bar .Great service by Marcos. My wife had steamed clams. Our daughter in law had clam chowder and Ceasar Salad. I had the Wet Beef sandwich. A classic item from the 90 year old Trani's Majestic menu. Also the Calamari is world famous. Swordfish sandwich is great. Pasta Fagioli is also a classic. Had a great House Cabernet (Casa La Postelle) Great lunch

Excellent catering experience

By Beth P |

J. Trani's catered my son's wedding rehearsal dinner recently and did an amazing job. The seafood was fantastic! Presentation was beautiful and they were so easy to work with. They did a lovely dessert bar too. I would highly recommend Trani's for catering.

Always Excellent

By rjgagliano |

Trani's food is excellent without having to pay the sky high Westside prices. Great service, family atmosphere and great food. Try the risotto balls, short rib pasta, butternut squash or mushroom ravioli. The pear pizza is awesome as well. The decor needs some modernization but, hey, the food trumps the old decor by a lot. Try it you will not be sorry.

Excellent Italian food (the best) in the South Bay

By noclvrname |

A review is only as good as the reviewer, right. These reviewers have had excellent food all over the world (32 countries and counting). Our cumulative trips to Italy total about 15. For my wife, Italian food is number 1. For me it is 2nd only to Chinese. We have eaten at fantastic hole-in-the-walls and Michelin stared restaurants all over the world. We are foodies. J. Trani's is, for us, simply the best, and consistently the best, Italian food in the South Bay. (Actually, it is our very favorite restaurant of any type in the South Bay). The service is consistently attentive, friendly and knowledgeable without being obsequious. The food is just perfect - fish, meat, fowl, pasta, pizza and salads. Always properly prepared and presented - always so very tasty. And the prices are so very reasonable for what is provided. Do yourself a favor.

4 stars for the food 2 for service!

By Michel V |

My mother and I went last night for dinner. Although our experience was enjoyable because of the delicious food there were a few mishaps. The restaurant was very busy with lots of large parties. The service of the smaller parties was inattentive, almost lacking. The management was gracious but overwhelmed (the manager was literally running around). Our server was pleasant but aloof and did not seem to be concerned about our wait. I ordered a bottle of champagne and that came fairly fast. The entrees came first about an hour an a half into our experience and after I asked what had happened to our calamari appetizer. The calamari made it to the table after the entrees. The rushed manager came by and addressed me from the stairs, because he could not reach our table, we were in a corner booth blocked by a large party table and said "we got slammed, the calamari is on me and get what ever you want for dessert it's on the house". The food was very good, well prepared and well presented. As we were finishing our entrees the aloof waiter came back, cleared the rest of the calamari and packed it to go, and returned with the check and a "ridiculous" birthday creme brûlée. The "on the house"calamari was still on the check and the "order what ever dessert you'd like it's on me" we're never offered. The calamari was deducted after I pointed it out. I paid got up and we left. At that point we had been there for 3 hours. No thank you, no "we are sorry", no good bye we're offered as we exited the venue....... We will go back because I like the food, but on a weekday instead of a Saturday night. Too bad....

Warm atmosphere and fine food

By gant k |

We have visited alot of fine restaurants in the immediate area and we found Trani's Italian restaurant to be the best. On the night of our visit the premises were crowded but the overall service was excellent. The menu contains a more than adequate selection of pastas, seafood, meats, and pizzas. There is also a very cozy bar to enjoy appetizers and drinks while viewing sporting events. The salads are excellent as are the desserts. There is plenty of off street parking in the adjacent parking lot. We ordered rib eye steak and rack of lamb as main courses and both were perfectly prepared and savory!

Excellent family owned restaurant. Half price on select wines Wednesday nights. Attentive and professional wait staff. Very good food!

Delicious!

By Doniece N |

My friend and I stumbled upon J. Trani's and discovered it's wonderful and authentic dinners. We enjoyed the spaghetti and meatballs and also the Calamari. Enough food for tomorrow's dinner. Staff was professional and the atmosphere was conducive for good conversation.

Can't wait to go back

By Kevin W |

This restaurant is really a time machine in disguise. You open the door, and you are back to the time when great Italian restaurants were on every corner. The food is classic Italian, the drinks have a generous pour, the service is good, and SInatra is the background music. I had the special gnocchi with lamb rague, and my wife had the lasagna. Both were very good. The portions were very large, enough for two. The Trani's special salad was enough for two and also was very good. We were both raised in San Francisco and miss the real Italian restaurants in North Beach. This was like coming home.

Best in town....

By Pat D |

I love Trani's because there is always something new on the menu and it is always something exciting. It also has the old favorites. The pizza's are imaginative and cutting edge and the pasta and fish dishes are unique. My grandson had the pasta with sea urchin and shrimp and loved it. The service is fantastic, all the servers are so competent and friendly. The host is wonderful, so special. You feel very welcome. Wednesday night wine is 1/2 off, which is a nice touch. The presentation of the plates is lovely. Can't wait to go again.

Great food and wine in the LA Harbor area

By Ed R |

Our first visit to J Trani's was last Friday night and I have to say I wish we had tried them long ago. The interior decor is a little old school but it is tasteful and very clean. The staff are all very professional and attentive just like you would expect from a 5 start resort. We had the spinach ricotta ravioli and the maple leaf roasted duck. Both dishes were excellent. The wine list is extensive and contains many fine wines that are not often found on restaurant wine lists. There is something for every price range. We will be back soon.

Go on a Wednesday nite when many of their wines are half-price.

By sfmaria101 |

How many places do you know which are crowded on a \Wednesday nite? This one is for good reason when many of the wines on their excellent wine list are half price. I also enjoyed their improbable pizza with potato, cheese and prosciutto- other compbinations are equally inventive. Not cheap . but 2 people can split one pizza and a salad.

Pre-cruise Dinner

By Bob R |

We were staying over night in San Pedro before our cruise and wanted an enjoyable dining experience to launch our cruise vacation. J. Trian's filled the bill. The food was exceptional and the staff was very friendly. I particularly enjoyed my seafood linguini. Two thumbs up for this one.

Italian & Mediterranean

By Ruth B |

We ordered a nice bottle of Italian red. We needed to share the food once we tasted each other's dishes-- they were so good! 3 entrees; the fish special which was a seafood linguini that was amazingly fresh, delicate and the sauce was perfectly seasoned. A bolognaise sauce and the last dish was mushroom risotto...forget what it came with but you would have too!! Mushrooms were freshly, delicately sauteed then folded into this incredible mushroom sauce risotto. I am going back for the risotto. We were too full for desert but what topped it off was the waiter brought us a creme brulee dessert to share. Amazing night.

Wine gathering Wednesdays are great

By Julia32174 |

for 50% off wines, get to Trani's on Wednesdays - you won't regret it! The food is delicious too. This is a great local haunt, and lives up to the quality local Trani name and traditional good food.

the place to go for fish!

By SeaLarsGo |

The fish is always good, its in there blood... Trani's have been catching, cooking and serving fish for 3 generations, so they know how to do it. Love the blacken squid, I ask for it on a salad...

Old-Fashioned Ambiance, Good Food

By Mark S |

Dined at this San Pedro landmark as a birthday treat for my father-in-law. J. Trani's is really low in curb appeal, and the inside, while warm and clean, also has an old-time, '50s look. I was dubious as we drove into the parking lot, even more so when we walked inside. The food, however, was terrific. Our foursome sampled the surprisingly good house wines, a bargain at $8 per glass, then moved on to the Trani's Salad - one order can serve two - and the Caesar salad and a truly delicious navy bean soup. Our main courses were the spinach ravioli, swordfish Milanese, tuna Sicilian and chicken Marsala. All were outstanding. I'm not a fan of tuna served rare, and asked the server to have it prepared slightly well-done. It arrived exactly as ordered, cooked through but moist and tender. For dessert, the creme brulee was on the house for the birthday boy, and we also tried the chocolate gelato (with a generous dollop of raspberry gelato in the center) and the bread pudding, in this case prepared with walnuts, maple syrup, and a scoop of maple ice cream. Though the menu described it as "flambe bread pudding," any flames must have been extinguished before it reached our table. But why quibble about such trivia? It was excellent!!!!! This is not a dining venue with a great many visual bells and whistles (well, one doesn't see many stuffed moose heads these days on restaurant walls), but the service was great, the family tradition was evident, and none of us had an unkind word for any of the food. I'm not especially generous with my 5s, but in every respect tonight's dinner was richly deserving.

Excellent service as well as very good food

By Nolofinwe |

Third time we visited this place and still never disappointed. Food is very good and fresh. The grilled octopus was a delight and I had pasta which were as well very good. All in all a very pleasant stay

Birthday Dinner

By halpie52 |

What a wonderful evening a group of 12 of us had celebrating our friends 73rd birthday. The restaurant staff went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect. It started by our being greeted by the host and asking that we wait as they finish preparing the table. While that was being done our waitress asked me (since I was the organizer) if the cake I brought needed to be refrigerated and when would I like it brought out? She also clarified if I wanted all the bottles of wine opened right away. I asked for two right away and the others as we requested during the dinner. She asked who was the guest of honor. She asked if we wanted separate checks. I clarified that there were a few couples, a foursome, and some singles. We were seated and the two bottles I requested to be opened were ready for us as we sat down. Appetizer orders were taken. The New style Calamari and the Octopus ones were especially well received. A variety of entrees were ordered and everyone’s response was that the food was fabulous. We were enjoying our meal and stayed for almost 2.5 hours without any complaints from the staff or feeling like we were being pushed out. I have eaten at several restaurants in San Pedro and this is by far my favorite one. I most highly recommend you give them a try.

return to Ischia island

By Trani F |

The restaurant intrigued me because it bears my name . The founder was born at Ischia island (Italy) and is now run by the grandchildren but they have never been to Ischia . This is not good because they should rediscover their origins . However at Trani's Restaurant you'll eat a good Italian food and the staff is very friendly and helpful

Great Spot

By Peter K |

We were treated to dinner here on the Saturday following Thanksgiving and it was wonderful. Our host had pre ordered the menu for us and she did a great job. Calamari with a light Thai sauce, Pizza, Salad, beef on potatoes, swordfish , a penne past in a delicious red sauce and desert and coffee if choice. All the food was very very tasty. They have a full bar that I enjoyed. I'd come back here again.

Happy Anniversary!

By scpick |

My wife and I celebrated our 39th wedding anniversary at J Trani, which we had been to earlier in the year and had a five star evening. Well, they did it again! Marvelous service, Iliana was our server, and attended to us in a very special way, attentive but not intruding. We started off with cocktails along with the Thai sauced calamari, which is the best I have had anywhere, and I ate it for two weeks straight in Italy off the coast of the Adriatic. The sauce is amazing. My wife had the veal chop special, which was huge, and I had the rigatoni with short rib ragu, and that was really great. Loved it! They were very kind to make our anniversary special with a tiramisu, which my wife makes, but she thought this was the best she's had. She lived in Italy for two years, so she should know. Next time, I'm going for the octopus, I had that last time, and it is great.

Old time feel, in San Pedro

By Sandrinaav |

Just walking through the door begs memories of a nice dinner house in the 50's or 60's...this place is classic classy. Not pretentious, just good quality food, nice drinks, and true service...the staff and kitchen will create things to your liking if you can't find it on the menu. Great place for a quiet drink, a group meal, or an intimate dinner.

Great place.

By LisleyD |

Love this little jewel of Pedro. Fine dining, food is fantastic, service is good too. Their seafood pasta is great and they have good wines to pair. Make sure you make a reservation or you could find yourself waiting a long time. Place is always packed.

Nice little spot in San Pedro

By TrojanSkyCop1 |

Came here to catch up with an old San Pedro friend over appetisers and drinks. Nice ambience, tasty ribs, good choice of Happy Hour drinks, excellent espresso, and friendly service by Marco the bartender. Will have to come back here for the main courses some day.

A bit pricey, but pretty good food

By Simple M |

I just like this place. It's homey and you see people you know if you live in Pedro or PV. The food is pretty good, but it's a bit pricey for what it is. The tuna tartare was really tasty, but microscopic in proportion. My husband had the swordfish and it was the best he's ever had. But I had the chicken marsala, and we both agreed it was dry and super sweet, which is weird and unfortunate. The servers are very nice. I recommend the risotto balls, those are yummy!

Over rated

By larryKitty8933 |

Upscale place for San Pedro. Better values available in many other places. Used to be better, been here for almost 70 years. Very good calamari. Not much else to recommend. Fish so so. Same for salads.

It’s about the calamari

By Joe Schofield |

The new calamari. It is a must. It is unique, nothing like it. Main courses are invariably very good to excellent, but when I reflect on my dining experience days later, it is the calamari I remember.

A Restaurant for Locals and Repeat Customers

By JJLMc |

Had dinner here on Friday night for a special occasion. Restaurant was largely filled with locals and repeat customers on a first name basis with the manager/owner?. We were neither and it definitely felt that way. Service was average at best. I was provided my dinner salad a lengthy time before the appetizer appeared. Entrees were served considerably after a number of patrons who ordered well after us. The calamari was pretty good, but the rest of the food, I had gnocchi, was fairly average. I would not repeat, definitely think at the prices the food needs to be improved. I had a glass of the house Chianti and it was very small.

Great Dinner with Family & Friends at J Trani's

By FrederickBurg |

Great food, service and ambiance at J Trani's in San Pedro. Extensive wine list, and a wonderful array of selections: from Italian to American to Seafood. Everything we ordered was great. The 16 oz. ribeye, the veal chop and the swordfish was all what you would expect from an iconic restaurant that is the best in San Pedro/Long Beach area.

Make sure you make a reservation for the great food

By Sailing_Sweetie |

The food was great...New York steak with potato croquettes and I had the porcini mushroom ravioli. Yum! You will not be disappointed by the food or the friendliness.

Disappointed with the food for Brunch

By Evita_1957 |

Went Sunday for brunch and ordered pancakes. The serving was the smallest I have ever experienced. Three little pancakes served with a cheese like butter and syrup and three walnuts.

A Gem

By winelover045 |

We walked to this restaurant from our hotel around 6pm last night based on the excellent reviews on trip advisor. We were warmly welcomed and we loved the ambience of the restaurant. Service was excellent and the food was delicious! We shared the daily Scallop special to start. I had the Porcini Ravioli for main - amazing! My husband had the seafood linguine which he enjoyed. Tiramisu & Pear Crumble for dessert were yummy. There was a good selection of drinks to choose from to accompany our meal and we both finished off the night with an adult coffee. Highly recommend.

A MUST ! Great place to eat with excellent service

By SKSA |

Trani 's has been going over 90 years because it's a great restaurant. Superb food and outstanding service. A variety of Italian and seafood, but enough variety of other food to make everyone happy.

If you're in San Pedro and going on a cruise, you might want to try this restaurant.

By fudgbug |

When we lived in Rancho Palos Verdes, this restaurant was one of our favorites. We're in San Pedro to join a cruise so made a reservation. We were not disappointed. The food, service and atmosphere is the same as we remembered. This night one had Maple Leaf Duck and the other a special of the evening Uni Bucatini (pasta with a sea urchin sauce) that was delicious. The Kuma oysters were great! Many thanks to Teresa S. our server who has been working here for 27 years. She may have served us in the past. A lot changes in 18 years! :-) Trani's is a local favorite.

Tasty- j Trani's

By ralph Z |

J trani's a jewel hidden in San Pedro. This restaurant in not on a main street, so I would say it is somewhat hidden. I can't vouch for the Sunday Bruch I haven't been there yet maybe next month. As for dinner you can have it in one of two places the Bar or the dining room. I'm kind of a bar person so this is where I mostly go, though I have been both places. I like the Bar atmosphere and that is where the local' s mostly hang. The people for the most part are very friendly and if you are the kind of person who like to meet new people this is a great place to do that. I have found the food consistently good. A must try is the Calamari they serve it two ways old style (marinara sauce) my favorite, and new style which is sweeter kind of a Thai sauce. you could ask for sauce on the side and pick which one you like best without making a commitment to one style or the other. Everything that I have tried which is most of the menu are all good choices. The bar staff is seasoned friendly and attentive they have been there for many years and can make you most anything. Inside staff varies with in quality. I have had good and ok service there. Over all this is a great place to eat and drink. I have been going there many years and see no reason to stop.

Amazing food with substandard service

By Steve S |

This would get a 5 star rating from me except for the very unsatisfactory service tonight. Our server, Theresa did not seem very happy. We asked her how she was doing and she complained that she had done lunch service and was exhausted. We ordered drinks and she made three trips to the bar, saying she couldn't carry them on a tray. Our friend grabbed the bill and payed. Theresa brought back the credit card receipt and asked her if she made a mistake with the numbers. Our friend, who is Canadian had left a 10% tip and was really embarrassed by the way this was handled. Theresa never came back to the table to recheck. I did put in some extra cash, but probably should not have. Unfortunately this ruined what had been an amazing meal. My brother lives in San Pedro and has been a super loyal customer and has brought me here for great dining experiences in the past. On to the food...we started with the new calamari that was amazing. Lightly breaded and crispy in a delicious Thai sauce. We also had the sishito peppers in a sweet sauce with feta cheese. A near perfect appetizer. Sweet, chewy, delicious. I had the tuna with aioli sauce. Covered with sesame seeds and perfectly seared. Semi rare in the middle and really delicious. The penne with Sunday sauce was super delicious and the truffle pasta was also amazing. Our had pear and Gorgonzola cheese pizza with a perfect crust. So to summarize, this is a fantastic place for a great meal, but this singular experience was ruined by a bad service person. Iwould definitely return, but would request not to be served by this woman who has worked here for over 20 years and should probably retire.

Small Restaurant with Old School Charm

By Deana S |

I loved the décor and small town feel of this eatery. That being said the waitress (red hair) appeared to be very rushed and was walking away from our table even before she was finished with her sentence. Not a lot of attention to detail. Table bread was good. We brought our own wine and poured our own which was not a big deal because there was no corkage charged. Meal was mediocre.....but we experienced some great meals at Terranea .... I wish we would have stayed on property and skipped J. Tranis. Will not be returning but it was worth a try.

Excellent service

By Sue S |

My daughter and son in law took me there for my first night in San Pedro for dinner. The food and service were excellent...the place can get a little noisy but only adds to the ambiance of friends and family enjoying a great night out!

Very Mediocre

By pearlmiriam |

We arrived @ Trani's on time for our 6p reservation. The hostess told us we needed to wait a few minutes to be seated because they needed to set up the table. The few minutes became 15 minutes, in spite of the fact the restaurant was fairly empty. I needed to ask her again when we would be seated and she then seated us. The menu was not what is shown on any of the websites, including Tripadvisor. We came because we liked the menu and the recomendations. I especially wanted the braised pork shank. It and many other things were no longer on the menu. Also, everything was now breaded and had honey added. I could not eat either. I ordered the fresh local swordfish. It was dry and tasteless. The brussel sprouts had honey added. None of it tasted like Italian. Perhaps, it's just me as a native of NYC. Why should I be surprised that honey is added to everything since they love pineapple on their pizza in Ca.

Amazing Food, Fabulous Service

By littled6607 |

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here from beginning to end. We sat in the bar area and our server was amazing. We never felt neglected and he was super busy! He recommended great dishes so we started out with calamari and it was amazing, especially the sauce that it came with. I ordered the butternut ravioli and fell in love. We also just happened to be there on a Wed night and it was half price bottle of wine night. What a treat! I ate my entire meal and used some of the bread to wipe up the leftover sauce from my meal. I would go back in a heart beat :)

An Italian Experience in San Pedro

By Patricia E |

We are new residents of San Pedro and were looking for a restaurant for a nice anniversary dinner. We had heard of J. Trani's so decided to give it a try. We had a lovely experience. We started with their Calamari appetizer, the New way and if for nothing else but this...we will be back! Very tender, crisp calamari topped by a sweet, spicy thai sauce was wonderful. Our server, Justin, suggested that we share a half appetizer because the portion was large and so we did. But I would not hesitate to return for a full portion with a salad for my meal! We had a generous cup of the white bean soup and a small house salad which was fresh and chilled. My entree was the Wild Mushroom Papparadelle which was rich and earthy. Husband had the duck which was cooked to medium rare as he requested. We had no room for dessert and took some left-overs home with us. We enjoyed a Vino Nobile wine and declared the meal a Success. There is a reason why this restaurant has been around for so many generations. We had read reviews of the service being inattentive and slow but that was NOT our experience.

A very good, traditional Italian restaurant

By Kenneth U |

This is a nice traditional Italian restaurant. Delicious food. Warm atmosphere. Great service. The pasta with white clam sauce was perfect and loaded with fresh clams. The panna cotta was heavenly. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the noise level was so high, it made conversation with our friends difficult.

Sittin at the bar with wine and salad fab!

By Sailing_Sweetie |

Great service and food. I had a glass of the house chianti and a wonderful salad. They close the kitchen at 8:30 pm but gave me a break because I was only a few minutes after.

Wonderful

By Kelley W |

Delicious food. Warm atmosphere - It felt like eating at a friend's house. Friendly service. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the food took a long time to come out after we ordered.

always have really good food and great service

By HungryGrrl |

I am ashamed to admit that I've been here many times and haven't taken the time to write a review. it's a nice local place that has been serving tasty fresh Italian food for years, nice atmosphere and excellent service. it's a small menu, but well appointed. if the mushroom ravioli is one of the specials, I'm hard pressed not to get it. their dinner salad is simple but very fresh and tasty. a delightfully well done Italian wedding soup.

I-N-S-A-N-E-Y J. TRANI!

By dklein |

How have I not written a review for the amazing J.Trani yet???? Near us for Italian, we've always had a soft spot for Giorgio (the man himself!) and Giorgio’s in Rolling Hills (which is very good in its own right, although we do miss the old school ambience of the old location up the street from The Red Onion) but looking for a change-up perhaps 6 or 7 years ago now, I, possibly regrettably (poor Giorgio's!), found J.Trani in nearby San Pedro. Ever since then, when choosing great Italian food with great service and ambiance, we usually choose our daughter's favorite over Giorgio’s. I'm so sorry, Giorgio! Before kids, we were at Giorgio’s a lot...since kids...we are slaves to them and their picks. Jeez, if only they paid! Anyway...the daughter's longtime favorite at J. Trani that leaves her wanting to come back again and again is the spaghetti and meatballs (even though her mother's own homemade version is absolutely fantastic as well). The usual standouts for me have been "The Peppers" and the "Sunday Sauce". First, I'll talk about those "traditional Italian peppers": Tempura shishito peppers, sweet chili beurre blanc, feta cheese, basil (description taken straight from the menu...minus the traditional Italian peppers part, duh). I think these were suggested to us by the waiter on our very first visit and I was VERY skeptical. Okay, a little confused too. BUT NO MO! These things are the bomb...and as is typical with shishito peppers, some peppers are harmless and some bomb your mouth with burning heat...so beware! I can't tell you how awesome these things are; I even feel guilty eating them. If I were Catholic, I'd have to go to Confessional. Side story: When restaurants first opened up again after Covid, my wife and I chose J. Trani as our very first date night (outside on the street, of course); sorry, daughter! And the only thing on my mind was...HOLY CRAP, WE'RE EATING OUT AT A REAL, HONEST TO GOODNESS RESTAURANT AGAIN! well, yes, that too but also THE PEPPERS. Seriously, not the amazing pasta, great cocktails, well everything else that is amazing (Oh, also post-Covid Freedom)...my mind was laser focused on THE PEPPERS. So order the peppers, ok? Next...that Pasta with Sunday Sauce. Truly one of the best dishes I've ever had. I love me a real hearty beefy/short-ribby (or boar-y) ragu. If I recall correctly, Sunday Sauce is the tomato sauce made with anything else a cook has left in the kitchen at the end of the week. Kinda like how San Francisco’s Italian fishermen in the late 1800s would take their leftover catch and throw it in a pot with tomatoes, herbs and olive oil and voila, Cioppino was born. Ya didn't know that, did ya? Come to think of it, I don't recall ever seeing Cioppino on J. Trani's menu...ahem...hint hint...it is, after all, one of my favorite ever dishes. But I digress. Order the Sunday Sauce; it's wonderful. And one time, they served it over cooked leftover pieces of pasta used in other dishes, carrying on the "leftovers" theme. I'm a sucker for a good story/theme, so I eat that crap up...and how, I did! Over the years, my family has also enjoyed the delicious pork belly appetizer as well as the fish carpaccio appetizer and the meatball appetizer and the pizza. My wife and son repeatedly order "The Best" Veal (and sometimes pork) chop parmesan, a massive dish, usually cooked on the bone and comes with a side of delicious penne with a slightly creamy tomato sauce. On our last visit last Friday for my daughter's 14th birthday, J.Trani and our wonderful server did not disappoint, making for one of the best dining experiences ever. Truly. We had such a great time, we chose to put a family dinner at J. Trani's on the books monthly so we'll be back Friday, October 6th...and Friday, November 3rd...Life gets really busy and this is the first time we're trying something like this so hopefully we can continue, you know, until high school when our kids turn into monsters. On our last visit, we tried the Calamari Milanese appetizer for the first time. The waiter suggested it prepared this way rather than "new style" (a more traditional fried calamari with a Thai aioli) which I must say is a pretty bold suggestion for a typical 14 year old girl and 11 year old boy but he had our kids' numbers alright because they are far from typical kid eaters. We absolutely adored this dish, which disappeared in seconds (ok, not really, we wanted to savor it). But we are definitely ordering this again (and again). The calamari was cooked perfectly (not chewy at all) and the sauce was fresh and light...just amazing. We stuck with just one appetizer and the yummy warm, fresh bread to start in order to save our appetites for the main entrees. For dinner, the girl, of course, ordered the Spaghetti and Meatballs. The wife and boy ordered their usual "The Best" Veal chop (I've had 2 rounds of leftovers of it this week and I'm going to polish it off for dinner tonight...not joking). As for me, I decided to try the black truffle carbonara (pasta). We had taken the kids on vacation to Europe for their first time this past summer, and we were lucky enough to visit Rome. Naturally, I did a ton of prior research and found an incredible place for lunch in Rome. Naturally, I ordered the carbonara (which was invented in Rome in 1944) and it was a religious experience. J. Trani's version had a similar effect on me. It was incredible! Definitely order this dish if you are a carbonara fan like me. Topping off the wonderful evening, the waiter presented the daughter with a birthday dessert, free of charge. We had Grandma's special homemade birthday cheesecake waiting at home so we didn't order any additional dessert that night but the desserts are all fantastic. Note, corkage is a reasonable $15 so we usually bring our own. I can't stand places that charge any more than that. Thank you, J. Trani, for all the incredible meals and more to come! See ya next month!

Best Food Around

Wether it is for a family occasion or date night. Trani's is my top choice to eat in town. We always start with Trani's new style calamari. It's DELICIOUS! From there, you can choose anything from the menu and you will not be disappointed. J Trani's is always a treat and I highly recommend it.

So very nice the waiters...

The Best San Pedro has to Offer

By rosie3losangeles |

We are a tight knit group in San Pedro. If we like something, we talk it up big. As well, the opposite is true. That speaks well for Trani's to be thriving after so many years. To the point, I have never had a bad meal there. It was right there with Trusela's before Bobby died, but life goes on. If you go, ask for Justin's section and make sure to tell him to work on his jump shot. The grandson Dustin is the executive chef and his menu is consistently good and eclectic. The new style calamari and swordfish carpaccio are excellent appetizers. Also, anything with the roasted Octopus is over the top. I had a tremendous rib eye, too. Overall, great Italian pastas, seafood and meat dishes. The vibe is very family with lots to look at. It feels like an Italian home at dinnertime. Don't take my word for it. Just try it and you will be back.

Favorite local spot

By Kristen R |

This is our favorite local spot. The ambiance reminds me of an Italian restaurant back east. All of the food is excellent. We especially love the calamari new style, and the spaghetti carbonara with truffle oil. YUM! Reservations are needed here, but we have had luck without reservations sitting at the high top table in the bar.

Dinner before the theater

By Beachredondo |

I always enjoy J. Trani's! We started with the new calamari. We were able to order a half order which was still enough for five people. The sauce was sweet, spicy, tangy and the calamari was cooked to perfection. Then we had salad with blue cheese dressing. Our three entrées were, double stuffed pork chops, short rib rigatoni pasta and seafood linguine pasta. There was not one complaint amongst us. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food.

Best Restaurant in Pedro

Started with the smoked swordfish and grilled octopus- both were fantastic. Second course we split the scallop pasta ( because they didn't have uni) very tasty. For dessert we split the bread pudding which was fantastic.

Good Food!

Great service! Food was good.We went with a group of people who get together every month to socialize. We all worked together at one time in our lives. Food was good but we were seated off the bar area so it was noisy and hard to talk. One of our party knew the manager so we were very well taken care of.

LOVED IT!!!

We stopped in for dinner while staying at a local hotel for the night. The food and staff were wonderful. The meatballs appetizer was amazing. All the food was above average. as were the staff. There were plenty of regulars there the night we visited and we can see why. If you are in the area stop in. You won't regret it.

Uniquely Styled Traditional Italian Food

By LML1985 |

I have been going to this restaurant for years, so I thought I’d share my experiences with the world. This restaurant is anchored in tradition of a family that have been in the restaurant business for over 90 years. I have met people from around the world who make sure they visit here whenever they’re in town. I’ve seen the menu change and evolve into what it is now, which is a mix of traditional items to creative twists on Italian food. Dustin Trani grew up watching and learning from his elders and he has created a uniquely styled Italian food that is so appealing both visually and in flavors, it will make you wanting more.

Tasty Italian Food in San Pedro

By palmercottage |

Note: The 9th Street address is in San Pedro, not downtown L.A. This is a nice traditional Italian restaurant with a generous selection of wines; the beer selection is limited. The service was friendly, and there are a variety of choices on the menu. My wife and I each had something from the salad and appetizer menu; the portions were generous enough to enable us to take some food home for another day. They also provide slices of bread (some with garlic, some without) with olive oil and balsamic vinegar that one can mix to one's own taste).

Our yearly visit

By trawlerdoxie |

We stop here once a year on our way north - it has become a tradition with a friend who lives in San Pedro. It has become a VERY EXPENSIVE tradition. $195 for 3 people which included 3 drinks & a relatively inexpensive bottle of Cabernet. The menu has changed a little which is fine. We shared their excellently prepared new calamari appetizer and it was plenty for 3 people. Our friend ordered a house salad & my partner & I split a Caesar. Entrees were truffle carbonara with spaghetti for our guest and we split the arugula and shrimp pizza. NOT ENOUGH SHRIMP! It might work better to use smaller shrimp so each piece has some on it. Aside from that the entree’s were very satisfying. The tiramisu was plenty to share. My cappuccino was disappointing. Our server/ bartender, Marissa, couldnt have been more efficient nor pleasant. We sat in the bar where we always choose to sit. We’ve been going to Trani’s for years & will continue to do so - we hope - and be prepared for the cost.

Want comfortable dining?

Some of our friends from RPV go to this San Pedro restaurant. We joined them after a USC game and had a wonderful meal and good laughs. Come early or obtain a reservation... it can fill up fast.

a nice find

By GaryG668 |

We had a certificate to dine here and we decided to use it. We did find that the kitchen closes between lunch and dinner so we had to kill over an hour before dinning. We left but did return later that evening, so it might be best to call ahead and check on dining times.\ When we returned we had smaller appetites than before as we snacked before our return and had to use our certificate as it we were only in town for the day. I had a vegetable plate and picked 4 items, all a great choice. The presentation was beautiful and it had a flavor to match. My cousin had a shrimp creation with GIANT and tasty shrimp and my wife a flavor filled pasta dish. It had to be good as we cleaned the plates. There was some type of flavorful bread that I thought was great but my partners didn't really care for...I guess it's an individual taste bud test. Service was great and the chilled water was a real thirst quencher. I enjoyed the "old world" decor and felt only the soft Italian background music was missing. I found conversation easy and felt very comfortable dining there. They do have a wine list and bar menu if you wish. My only regret is that we only had a small appetite at the time as I would have enjoyed eating a full meal here.

Off day for JTrani

By James W |

The folks we ate with raved about Tranis, but when we went the service was bad. The manager finally helped out, she was great. It took over 1h to get food. Some of the dishes were great, but the spaghetti was way undercooked. But they have one of the best Crème brûlée I have had.

Family style Italian popular with locals

By Bill F |

This is a popular local restaurant with a pretty pedestrian menu. However, these the dishes their local clientele want to see. The best dish we ordered was the calamari appetizer with a sweet Thai sauce. That was great

Always a great stop!

By trawlerdoxie |

We go here once a year when we visit friends in the San Pedro area - and are never disappointed. Last night - an appetizer of octopus & arugula in a limoncello dressing; their classic shrimp pesto pizza (not on the menu); wild mushroom pasta (not as good as usual), mushroom ravioli, and a Caesar - but you have to request the anchovies. Wine choices - fabulous - and spendy.

Good Restaurant in San Pedro

By BillPom |

Really like this restaurant. They have been in San Pedro for ever, and are always good. Went back last week. The food was excellent. The waiter is a character, and gave us excellent service. Food quantities are generous. Food production is a bit slow.
