Give it a try

good food and they even specially cooked potato for my husband as he does not like pasta!! The most delicious Bruschetta and their signature veal dish is a must. No room for dessert. Friendly efficient staff, need to book.

Continental Ambiance and excellent food

By June W |

Had an early dinner --had skipped lunch--- around their opening time ---pleasant patio with heat lamps ( not required on this perfect day) chose to DINE inside. Continental atmosphere. White linen tablecloths --choice of booth or table --chose booth. Appetizers Bruschetta --topped with fresh diced tomato, herbs and cheese--bread was fantastic ! I chose their specialty SCAMPI with mushrooms and herbs in wine sauce --HEAVENLY !!! 6 scampi were HUGE --almost like small lobster tails and the mushrooms were thick and heaped generously in the middle of the plate --OH-OH so GOOD. we followed with Tiramisu --served in a LARGE glass bowl with TWO spoons-- it was wonderful and--we ate it ALL. restaurant had excellent WINE selections which we had with the main course. DEFINITELY GO --if--YOU LOVE GOURMET ITALIAN--CLASSICAL CUISINE !

Not for me ...

By Clifford L |

Wife's ricotta pancakes were nice but my Lasagne was truly awful;18 layers of overcooked pasta layers with a meat sauce thrown over it. Read the varying reviews of this restaurant and our different standard of meals represent the reason why!

Simple family food

By John G |

There is nothing fancy about the food which is not a bad thing, but given the pricing and ambience, one would expect a bit more than fairly standard - but well-prepared - Italian food. The scampi is still absolutely delicious after all these years (this is a must have at Giuglio's) but the veal/eggplant parmigiana is average at best. Salads are fresh, but pastas just okay.

Word of Mouth for this place is Spectacular

By bruce p |

Didn't eat here, but heard many great things from locals and other travelers in other places that say when you are in San Diego this is the place for Italian food lovers.

Fantastic Italian Food

By _muskellunge12 |

We are in San Diego for Spring Break. We had enough Mexican and looked for a change of pace. We found Jack & Giuluo’s and decided to give it a try (2 seniors, 2 adults & 2 kids). What a great find. All of us ordered different entrees and everyone was 200% pleased with our selections. My lasagna ranked as a number 1 or 2 of all time. The pasta sheets were thin and many of them. The sauce was fantastic. Our waiter (Grabrile - spelling is most likely wrong) was a true delight, efficient and so helpful. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone! Fantastic

Great food in an old-fashioned ristorante

By Professional-Pilgrim |

We walked all over the Old Town of San Diego, looking for a restaurant with a degree of elegance, and a lack of noise. We finally found it here. We had two delicious dishes: Veal parmigiana and Canneloni. This was after a plate of equally delicious Bruschetta. Service was great. The place made us think that we were in Italy.

Our favorite!

By Cruiser717491 |

We discovered this restaurant a few months ago and have been returning ever since. It really feels like a hidden gem to us, and we highly recommend Jack & Giulio’s. Their espresso martini is chocolately and excellent - not too acidic. Their lemon drop martini is also perfection. Their veal dishes and pasta dishes are all amazing and we’re working our way through the menu with each visit. As far as dessert, we’ve only tried the tiramisu and the strawberries + cream, but our favorite is the strawberries. We’d love to know more about this restaurant’s history! It is so authentic and romantic.

Why don't restaurants understand that the wait staff represents the ambiance?

By CaliforniaGirls92109 |

We went here for "Happy Hour". First, the entire restaurant had only 2 tables with people in it. When we said we were there for Happy Hour (and keep in mind, it was 4:30 in the afternoon), the waiter asks if we have a reservation (and NOT with a sense of humor or irony). He begrudgingly leads us to a table, barely gives us a menu, and looks displeased the entire night. Oh... best part, we leave around 6:00 before it is filling up, so we are NOT taking up an important table. The drinks were no great price, the cocktails on happy hour look tended to have sherry as the main ingredient (really??) and the appetizers were okay (the bruschetta was actually very good). The worst part is we do eat dinners there sometimes and actually liked the restaurant but there is no replacement for an unfriendly wait staff. NOT worth giving them your time and money, sad to say. And all four of us thought this... not just me.

OK Setting; terrible food.

By Alan S |

Briefly: Setting is fine; plenty outdoors; good music for traditional atmosphere. Walls near posterior, especially bathrooms, are filthy. Food is a disaster. Online menu is pure fantasy - perhaps they "borrowed'" from another restaurant, or else it reflects years ago? My wife and I made primary (AND back-up) choices before we went - NONE existed anymore. And the "food" itself!....1) the Brutus (Caesar) salad, while generous in portion, had three stale croutons, wilted lettuce - actually field greens with wilted purple cabbage, dandilions, and multiple stems. Neither of us could eat it. 2) the bread, while served slightly warm, quickly hardened into a stale, inedible shell with stale inslde, by the time we wanted second pieces. 3) my wife had veal parmegian - a gristly, cold (frozen?) patty, smothered with sauce. I had lasagna dele casa, thin slices of ordinary pasta, with seemingly no (or very little?) ricotta or anything else. We took a "to go" box, to be polite, but threw it away in an outside bin. Olive Garden or Fillipi's are much better tasting and half the cost. Maybe it was good a while back - and some reviews reflect this - but we say STAY AWAY!

Excellent

By Stravinsky1975 |

Some of the best pasta I have had for a long time. It's close to the old town in San Diego. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the food was really good. We eat a lot of Italian food in the UK and this was way better than we have had for a long time. Freshly made pasta - fantastic

Good hearty Italian food

By Trippyhappy |

We did a takeaway as the kids were too tired. Angel hair pasta and minestrone soup were very yummy, hearty Italian cooking.

Excellent Italian food

By John B |

We visited as a party of 9 whilst on holiday for my dad's birthday, the staff we excellent and very attentive. The food was very very tasty and easily as good as food in Italy. It was reasonably priced for food of such excellent quality. My wife and I returned last night and we had different dishes which were both excellent. I cannot recommend this place enough. The bar is also very well stocked and the choice of wine was superb.

quiet quality

By Michael N |

Authentic and creative, the menu offered us a change of pace from average. Pleasant surprise tucked between so many fine Mexican places in Old Town. Staff was attentive and skilled, informative and alert. Solid service and great food. THANKS for a nice end-of-day treat in Old Town !

Such a charming restaurant!

By hollyhere1 |

We met up with a family friend who is a regular here. We had just left the beach so we opted to sit outside. Plus, it was a lovely evening. That being said, the interior is charming with a bit of an old school rat pack vibe. I'd love to go back and sit inside or at the bar. Service was fantastic. My daughter adored her ravioli with alfredo sauce that are uniquely shaped. I had the bird's nest (or swallows nest, I can't quite remember) which was excellent. I can't wait to return!

Saturday night out with friends

By Walter D |

Your in Old Town San Diego, your thinking Mexican food and it's on every corner right? However, then there is Jack & Giulio's old world Italian! Great food, outside on the patio, casual but nice atmosphere with great service. It was busy, but not loud, not like some of the other places down the street. Full bar, killer Manhattan's, nice reasonably priced wine list. So if you are in Old Town & you don't want to deal with the loud and sometime rowdy crowds and want something other than Mexican, then try Jack and Giulio's. You won't be disappointed.

Really Italian

By patiD |

This is a lovely old style Italian restaurant. Excellent service and quality/quantity food. The Chicken Marsala was the best my partner has had in years - and he was SO happy. My Chicken and Eggplant Parmesan was crispy outside and tender/juicy inside (ask for just a tad more sauce). Located in Old Town where the majority of restaurants seemed to be Mexican with a few Indian sprinkled about - this was a great spot if you are not into those ethnic foods at the time. They have a lovely outdoor garden area as well. We come from Half Moon Bay, Ca. (a major destination I am sorry to say)... where the food should all be wonderful due to the high class tourists - but Jacks beats all of the ones we have. Happy to have discovered it!!

Friday Night Dinner

By Emory B |

While in Old Town we were looking for something different for dinner. We heard about Jack & Giulio's, an old and well established Italian restaurant in Old Town. Lots of seating outside with great service. You can eat outside or inside, both have a different atmosphere. Nice size portions so we shared the Antipasto and Tortelloni Verdi. A great place to have dinner after spending the day in Old Town San Diego.

Tired Old Place, Mediocre Food

By Brian S |

I am told that this was once a great place for a reasonably priced, upscale Italian dinner. Echoes of the past must still be informing the collective consciousness because I found nothing noteworthy. Food is average at best and not quite Olive Garden quality (which is factory food). Service was slow, the place was nearly deserted and staff seemed to be going through the motions.

Old school Italian and worth it.

By Rainforest_8 |

Charming, white napkin restaurant that, judging from our visit, is used by locals for special occasions [in this case a birthday.] Serving classic dishes done well, the staff was professional and the service fast. We stumbled on this place and were happy we did.

Very good Italian

By Norman L |

We tried Jack & Giulio's restaurant in Old Town San Diego on a recent vacation to that area and really enjoyed our meals. My wife and I traveled with another couple and all four of us were extremely pleased with our dining selections. The atmosphere was also very pleasant and inviting. Would highly recommend this restaurant if you are in this area.

Diner

By angsarrom |

Not bad food Pleasant ambiance We ordered Pasta, all types and all of them were tasty Kind Stuff To repeat

Valentine's Dinner

By Julie M |

We also had Valentine's dinner here. The food was excellent and so was the service. The cheesecake was sublime and liqueur coffee enjoyable and very hot (not often the case in my opinion). Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Would dine here again.

Italian in Old Town? Porque no?

By Robert A |

This is our go-to restaurant before theatre at Cygnet Old Town. We also take a large group there every year for a family style Italian dinner. Very friendly staff, good bar, great food. Bueno!

Pleasant Ambiance, Great Food, Super Service, and Italian Cuisine close to I-5 Old Town San Diego Exit

By jackson97 |

Having eaten there many times before when we lived in San Diego, we knew it was a great place bring our aging Italian friend to gain the Italian charm in an excellent restaurant. He was impressed as the food he ordered was impeccably prepared, the service timely, and the ambiance super as we were placed in a quiet corner with a large window overlooking the courtyard. The prices are affordable and the visit will be memorable. It is always a place we visit when ever we go to San Diego.

Homemade Pasta & Sauces!

By Jennifer V |

This is a kid friendly restaurant but if you are looking for something your kids will eat because it looks pretty, then this isn't the place. This place is homemade, from pasta to sauce. Not every plate will look pretty but it will taste amazing. Rich alfredo sauce, perfectly grilled chicken. The lasagna was amazing too. Must try if you are in the Old Town.

Wonderful Italian food in Old Town

By hjmasi |

When I was a child, we used to go to Giulio's restaurant in Pacific Beach. The food was always delicious and Giulio always went out of his way to make us feel welcome. Now, his son, Jack greets you at the door and extends the same warm welcome. The food is also still delicious. I had the best chicken piccata that I've ever eaten. My husband loved his veal and eggplant parmesan. We finished our dinner with the fresh strawberries and zabaglione...It was the perfect ending to a wonderful evening. We only wish we lived closer so that we could eat here more often. We will definitely return on our next trip to San Diego.

Nice italina - reasonably priced

By Kirsten and Kevin |

Good food and great service in this very authentic Italian set up - little else to say really other than well deserved four stars - high recommendable.

Not good

By MrsClooney844 |

Greeted with a smile and seated in the cute courtyard on a lovely late afternoon... unfortunately its downhill from there. The man who took our drink orders was grumpy. A different man brought our drinks and introduced himself as our waiter... ok... Drink arrived with lipstick on the glass, not mine. We waited for our server to return but Mr Clooney eventually had to get up and take it back to the bar. A new drink came out fairly quickly - I should hope so... Menu was very basic italian, none of the options were creative or offering many fresh vegetables. Appetizers of brushetta and garlic bread were extremely average on the flattest bread (is that a thing?) that I've ever experienced. Kids were happy with their spaghetti and meatballs but Mr Clooney's veal parmigiana looked liked it had been heated up straight from the box. His plate of vegetables was strange - 8 string beans and a single broccoli floret, really? I had "house" lasagna and it was also disappointing. Pasta was dry at the edges and there was a v thin layer of ricotta... not sure how this was made but it was not high quality. Did I mentiorn that my water glass also had a huge crack in it? After we left we took a walk thru Old Town when Mr Clooney was notified by the credit card company that he had been charged $1400 by the restaurant! We went back, they had made a mistake and reversed it but it kind of sealed the deal for me. This was not a good restaurant.

A little bit upscale Italian dining.

By Mike B |

Pretty good food but a little higher price. If you like lemon in your meal you'll love this place. Drinks always raise the bill.

Delicious

By OcdmomDestiny |

We have not had food this good since Little Italy in New York. Our kids were able to get kids portion of the pastas and we left full with a great fine dining experience. The staff was friendly and helpful with the menu as well.

Fabulous Dinner

By Katherine P |

We stayed in Old Town for just one night and needed a place near our hotel. You can't beat Jack and Giulios for taste and service! The atmosphere was brilliant and is exactly how I imagine restaurants in Italy. The wait staff was extremely attentive and helpful. The food was served with pride (as it should have been) and was so delicious. Should we ever be in that area again, we will seek them out.

Good experience

By sunshinestatedcs |

We had dinner at Jack & Giulio's after receiving a recommendation from our hotel and had a good experience. The restaurant was small and the atmosphere was nice. This was not a traditional Italian restaurant as we found the menu limited and our meals didn't come with salad or bread. If you want bread you have to pay for it...which is not usual for Italian restaurants. The food was good and our waitress was pleasant.

Menu disappointment - average food and service

By Eric B |

We looked forward to gnocchi based on the menu posted on the TripAdvisor website, but at the restaurant it was not a menu item. The bolognese on the online menu was also non-existent on the restaurant menu. If you're looking for something specific you might want to call ahead and see if they have it. The swallow's nest was tender and delicious but the spaghetti was tasteless and past al dente with a rather bland meat sauce and dry meatball. Great, intensely flavorful Caesar salad with abundant anchovies (I asked for anchovies) but the up-charge for the addition of anchovies was ridiculously unreasonable. Service was very attentive, but not personable, just officiously attending to duty. The restaurant was not busy on a Friday night. Several places in San Diego's Little Italy are much better.

Great Anniversary Dinner

By GernGang |

In San Diego for our Anniversary, we knew we wanted to go to Jack and Giulio's for our celebratory dinner. They did not disappoint. Dinners were fantastic with Veal Marsala and their classic Lasagna. Fresh, perfectly prepared and absolutely delicious were both entrees! More importantly, our waiter Alfred was beyond exceptional. He was very attentive, yet never hurried us. He was fun, charming and very knowledgable about everything on the menu. The food always speaks for itself, but Alfred really made our Anniversary dinner special.

Drawn in by the outdoor Patio, will return because of the amazing food!

By Manosg617 |

Here on business. Was wanting sushi. That didn't happen. Settled for this restaurant because it had a charming outdoor patio, weather was 69 degrees. Pinot Noir by the glass, delicious. Caprese salad, refreshing and delicious. Dinner was a seafood linguine special that had large amounts of mussels, clams, lobster tail and a flaky white fish. The taste was superb and I want to state I almost always get a similar style plate when I hit an Italian restaurant. This place hit it perfectly. More seafood than pasta. Sauce was delicious and freshly made. I am literally sitting here typing this review while paying my bill because I felt it deserved it 100%. My server was Jose. He has multiple tables but never seemed to forget me. Thank you for a great first night in San Diego J&G's.

Good Food

By johnellen@mchsi.com |

This Italian restaurant only serves lunch on Fridays. Luckily, that is when we were there. They had indoor & outdoor seating, The generous lunch portions were excellent.

Good Italian Food Terrible Service

By Sheryl S |

Inside of restaurant was busy, but no line-up. Outside seating area was mostly emty. We were seated quite quickly, but then ignored for at least 10 minutes. Meals came fairly quick after order was taken. Tortollini was quite good, but a very strong flavour. Breaded veal cutlets were quite dry and tasteless.

Wonderful Italian food in Old Town

By judy l |

After trying Jack and Julios I can skip the Mexican restaurants in Old Town. This was one of the bast Italian Restaurants that I have eaten at. I have my favorites in New Jersey and Manhattan ,but this was excellent. I wish we had eaten there the entire week that we were in San Diego. We arrived early and decided to walk down the block and discovered a wonderful display of trains. The train display is free and is one man"s 15 year collection and takes up almost 2400 sq.ft of trains and landscaping. It was terrific and made our evening very special.

Great food - cranky service

By laa |

Food was really good. The manager was really cranky and unfriendly. He was upset because we wanted 2 bills in order to pay separately.

Very enjoyable

By dndbonanza |

This is a good all round Italian restaurant. I really enjoyed our meal here. No surprises but just hit the spot. Recommended.

Very good Italian food in San Diego Old Town

By Stan W |

With a Navy Reunion group. enjoyed the food. Atmosphere left a bit to be desired but overall was very good.

Excellent place to eat!

By Susan V |

This is an excellent restaurant. Both our meals were delicious and the outdoor patio was perfect for enjoying the outdoors.

South end of Old town. Great Italian restuarant

By Greatplacesnv |

In Old Town you are usually looking for Mexican food and flavor. Stop and trip Jack and Giulio's and it will be well worth it. Generous portions for the price and the drinks were exceptional. We even created a new drink of rum delight. The wine selection was excellent and the food was great. Very nice place and after dozens of trips to Old Town I cannot believe I waited this long to visit the great little restaurant.

Excellent alternative to more Mexican food!

By KLJNJ |

It was a little strange to go to an Italian restaurant in Old Town San Diego which is known for its Mexican restaurants. However, we were very glad we did! The food was really good and reasonably priced. Portions were generous and staff was very friendly. We would definitely return if every in the area again.

Excellent Italian Food

By Dan G |

Probably one of the best Italian meals I have eaten after moving to CA from NY. The Veal Parmigiana, Gnocchi Imperiali, and Caprese salad were perfect. The wine was also perfect. In my opinion, this Italian restaurant is better than any of the ones in San Diego's Little Italy District.

Christmas Eve Scrumptious

By njoireading247 |

Our two grown children and ourselves had a Christmas Eve dinner here and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Arrived a little early but treated as though we were family. Sat at the bar and had amazing cocktails. Hand mulled fruit for my old fashioned. Dinner was great. Appetizers were good but dinner was fabulous. We were the last seating of the night but you wouldn't have known that. Clam linguine was very good, but the rest of the group had a seafood dinner dish that was amazing. The atmosphere is not that great...a bit run of the mill, but I would think in the summer the outdoor dinner would be a lot of fun. Recommend!

Experience Dinner and Service

By PortugueseMan |

My wife and I love Italian cuisine. We travel offen and have had Italian dishes in many cities. The meals we had this evening (Veal Marsalis & Swolows Nest) were outstanding. Service was tentative without being hovering. We first thought what that heck is Italian restaurant doing in old Town San Diego where most food is Mexican. But we read so many reviews on how good the place was and to make sure to try the Chocolate Moose. My wife LOVES Chocolate so we thought worse case we would share the moose. It was rich and delicate. Yes we have been to Little Italy many times and this experience was better than anything we had there.

Decent food, not much for kids

By MountainTraveler096 |

Close to our hotel, spotted this place walking back from our trolley tour excursion. We decided to sit out on the patio since it was such a nice evening. They had live music (a duo, quiet dinner music-type stuff). I ordered the antipasto platter and it was so-so. The prosciutto was a bit on the dry stringy side, the garlic was in HUGE chunks, not finely grated. Wine by the glass is available. Not much on the menu for kids. Our waiter was very friendly and showed up when we needed him and didn't hover. I might try it again, but will try something else on the menu.

Fantastic Italian

By Dave F |

I had the great fortune of taking my parents back to Jack And Giulio’s while visiting San Diego. Their meals are just as incredible (and consistent) as they were when they were down by the beach in Pacific Beach nearly 25-30 years ago. Fabulous location / Setting with quaint inside / outside tables, top notch servers and food is fantastic. Definitely don’t miss the tortellini Verde, lasagna and eggplant parmigiana - and get extra garlic bread! Owner Jack is the king of hospitality and will make you feel like family even on your first visit. Don’t miss this one! (Very heavy tourist area but this is a treasured spot for locals) Enjoy!

Good if you don't want mexican

By cmickelsen |

The service was mediocre as we waited to be seated and nobody was at the restaurant. Once we sat the service was better but not much. Never refilled drinks and brought the wrong meal to one of of us. Once we had the food it was good and fresh. The pastas were very good but overall it's a bit pricey for what you get. We had kids with us and although the staff was nice to them this isn't a great place for kids.

BEST ITALIAN FOOD EVER!!!

By Shari F |

We were just walking by and saw this place, soooo glad we came in! Every bite was soooo special and we will love to come back again. I see some bad reviews and this surprise me!! We just went to highly recommend Italian place in Seattle today and I was hoping will be same as this place but we were disappointed.

That's Italian

By Gary G |

Great food and great service. We dined there twice during our seven day stay. The veal dished are superb abd the pasta is as fresh as it can be. You won't be disappointed.

A Charming Italian Restaurant

By HNBISOFF |

Jack and Giulio‘ SWA’s a very charming restaurant. The bruschetta was very tasty. The shrimp scampi was excellent and the pasta dishes were very tasty. It is a small neighborhood gem. An excellent meal to end the day.

What a gem in Old Town for wonderful service and food

By LandofHopesandDreams |

After a long day at MCRD, we wanted to find a place to chill out and relax. After reading the reviews on TA and Open Table, we choose Jack & Giullo's. We loved walking in and having not one..but TWO people ask where we wanted to sit and rushed to make up a table for us. The ambience is wonderful - great lighting and very soothing background music. Our booth was very comfortable and provided enough space for all 4 of us. The reviews said to order the homemade pasta. The waiter explained the difference between their homemade pasta versus the pasta they brought it. Both were good...but hands down...order their homemade pasta. Mama Mia...excellente!! The service was outstanding. Not overbearing yet they were always there to fill up a water glass or take away a place. The restaurant was not very busy, but I swear, our food was delivered to us within 7 minutes of our order. Great meal, great service and a 5 star review at Jack & Giullo's. You will love it!

Frank Sinatra Night at Jack and Giulio's was very fun!!

By on2thenextevent |

We had another very fun evening at Jack and Giulio's! We went on Frank Sinatra Night and the music was terrific and Jack sang!! I didn't know that Jack had such a good voice! We will definitely be back!!

Old Town Italian

By mom22militarymen |

We had hit up the taco places in Old Town so found this restaurant and it smelled so good as we passed we decided to try it. The food was very good, simple, well prepared and fresh. We sat in the courtyard and there was live music, which was nice to eat to. The service was okay, our waiter seemed a bit grumpy, but was fairly attentive. We enjoyed the meal, it was a nice unexpected surprise in Old Town.

Fabulous Italian, and best shrimp scampi ever!

By dbarrett2016 |

This is the best Italian food I've ever eaten and is in the top five restaurant meals of my life. The house special shrimp scampi boasted butterflied shrimp larger than a chicken tender, but the taste made the meal. Superb! Every meal at our table was positively scrumptious. I can't say enough good about this wonderful restaurant.

Great Italian in Old Town

By SICTRAVELERS |

We were staying in Old Town &looking for something besides Mexican. We found it here. The place seems to attract a lot of locals which is always a good sign. The service was great & severs friendly. The food was terrific. My wife thought her lasagna was one of the best ever and I had a great veal dish. The wine was also very reasonable priced. If you get a chance, don't miss it.

Very Disappointed!

By Susan S |

We were staying on Hotel Circle and wanted a good meal after a long day of playing tourist. This was recommended by the hotel and we were hungry for good Italian food. The atmosphere was great, wait staff attentive, but most of the food was a disappointment. The Minestrone soup was good, pasta with meat sauce was just ok and the Chicken Piccata was horrible! Very over powering sauce and no flavor to the chicken!

Best Itallian Food

By Shirl |

The pasta is made fresh, which really made the dish. The service was top notch, friendly and knowledgeable of the area as well. You can dine inside or out.

Cute Little Italian Place with a Good Bar and Great Service!

By TheSeaIsForMe |

We were here for a pre-theatre dinner in Old Town San Diego and all of us really enjoyed the atmosphere, good drinks and a nice dinner. Minestrone soup was freshly made in the old style, served very hot. The portions of the lasagna and bird's nest pasta portions were huge and tasty. I had a chicken piccata and the other member of our party had the veal Milanese. All-in-all a nice choice for a special dinner.

Lovely restaurant, excellent service

By finnsmimi |

The owner, Jack, was very accommodating. The food was wonderful, and the service was top notch. They also have a good wine list.

Great Restaurant

By G M |

Wonderful restaurant outside San Diego’s Old Town! Lots of entry’s, including tasty veal! Wine was good, prices reasonable! Highly recommend, especially if you’re tired of Mexican!!!

Good but weird policies

By ontheroadlovetravel |

Food was a bit pricy and they were weird about our large group and separate checks. My chicken picatta was good. Some people said their dishes were too salty and rich.

Italy it isn't

By RovingJohnUSA |

Made an error trying for Italian in the middle of Mexican Old Town. Nice place, friendly staff, attractive Italian menu, and then the disappointment set in. Bruschetta evidently translates as pizza here. The we discovered Bolognese sauce that was much akin to taco filling, missing the distinctive olive/tomato of the real thing. That was served over pasta that had been cooked al dente to the point of chewy. Sangiovese was good though, but should be at $8 for a short glass. Seriously disappointing.

Very nice restaurant and good food.

By tulpje07 |

This restaurant is in the Old City, very near to the Hotel Circle. It has a nice terrace/patio, but we had dinner inside. The restaurant has a good atmosphere and is nicely furnished. The food was very nice. We had lasagna, veal , gnocchi, garlic bread, salads. It all tasted really good, the portions weren't too big but big enough. Prices were ok. Our waitress did not particularly impress us; she had a kind of artificial friendlyness which did not come across as sincere. With the right waiter, this restaurant is a really recommendable. rtificially friendly,

Fine Italian Dining among many Mexican Cafes in Old Town

By Montereycowboy |

What a pleasant surprise to walk from our hotel in Old Town and find something other than Mexican food. After staying a week, we were not in the mood for South if the Border dining anymore. Jack & Giulio's was not just a port in the storm, it was a superb restaurant! THe food and service were outstanding. We dine in the comfortable outdoor patio area. Our grandson Dillon, age 8, was so impressed that he wanted to leave a tip. All he had in his pocket was a penny. He left it for our waiter along with our generous tip. After all it is the thought that counts. So next time you venture to Old Town, try Jack & Guilio's.

Underwhelming

By 2BEis2SKI |

Went for a team dinner, 9 of us. Sat in the middle of this smallish restaurant. Nice experience overall. Before I go further, I need to add that I'm not a fan of Italian food as it's typically carb heavy but most Italian restaurants have options that exclude pasta and Jack and Giulio's does to. I got one of their specialties with very lightly breaded and butterflied shrimp along with mushrooms and white wine sauce. The shrimp was good as were the mushrooms and sauce. Came with a side (pasta or veggie), in this case, green beans. Cost was $31 and not at all sure that it was worth that but it's SoCal and Old Town to boot so I get it. Also had a heart of palms salad that was good but not great. When I translate that to $40 with tip (nothing but water to drink), the value wasn't there. A colleague ordered an extra meal to go and they neglected to provide that so he had to order it again at the end and was charged full price even though he had to wait an extra 15 minutes before he could leave. Food was fine but everything else sort of blah. I didn't notice any bad smells but Jack and Giulio's is not on my place to return.

Perfection - Best Italian Food Ever

By Otherbiz |

This truly charming restaurant in the Old Town section of San Diego should not be missed. The shrimp scampi and sea bass were absolute perfection. The salad and spaghetti dressings, with a slight hint of anchovies, were light, and better than we've had anywhere, including Italy. Sergio our waiter is a real professional and personable. the original owner still does all the preparation and cooking . WOW is the word for Jack & Giulio's.

italien food

The food is the best in town, very good service, and the atmosphere is unique.i think i said it all but also i have to say the bakground music, italien is teriffic

Disappointed

By Naniepoppie123 |

Had a reservation for 4 at 6:30 on a Sunday night to celebrate a birthday When we arrived the place was empty. No one! Stayed that way throughout the meal. But obviously we received excellent service. The appetizer menu is limited. Waiter graciously divided our salads. One Caesar and a caprese . Unfortunately the scampi which they are so famous for was nothing like we use to get years ago at the Pacific Beach site. So disappointed ! Best part of the meal was the complimentary ricotta cheese cake they brought the birthday girl. Best ever!! The tiramisu was excellent too. Our waiter sang happy birthday in English and then again in Italian. He then serenaded us with a song in Spanish. Very nice voice. They have a tiny parking lot in the back which is a bonus because parking is always limited. So sad that this once vibrant place was dead the night we were there. Too depressing so we may not be back but we wish them well.

Small portions, big price

By Cindy K |

We ordered shrimp bisque which came in a huge bowl but there was only a few spoonfuls in it. It was good, what there was of it. I also ordered linguini and white clam sauce, but it was very watery. For the steep price we paid I didn't feel the food was up to par. If you are on a diet this is your place.

Excellent food and service

By IntlTraveler61 |

We enjoyed delicious food and had great service at this restaurant. We recommend it. It is close to the attractions in Old Town.

The experience was great great service fresh pasta and sauces exceellent wine selection desserts were very delicous. Down side parking is horrible.

Excellent Italian

By Judy H |

Went to this very cute restaurant in Old Town alone on a Saturday evening. No problem; seated in a booth a little to the rear-my choice. Started with a homemade shrimp bisque. So fresh, some texture which was a welcome addition - quite a large serving. Followed this with veal piccata - possibly the most moist and tender veal I have ever eaten. A delight with plenty lemon tartness.

Excellent cooks everything else lacks

By Michelle G |

We're excited to go to a traditional Italian restaurant host was helpful squeezed us in with no reservations. Our waitress was horrible I'm pretty sure she forgot our bread because I seen that other tables had bread when we asked for stuff they did not have she did not make other suggestions she just said no. I asked for a margarita with amaretto she said no so your telling me a Italian restaurant had no amaretto in the bar? And she couldn't of asked the bartender if he could substitute amaretto in one of there many margaritas??? Poor menu choices not much " Italian" drink choices either with alcohol or no alcohol Italian martini was great but only Italian drink choice not a lot of Italian ambience, food was perfectly cooked sub average dessert menu and they were out of tiramisu by 7:00 on a Friday went to Cheesecake Factory afterwards where they had way more Italian options

We've had some good food experiences here

By Tony G |

My wife and I enjoy fine dining here for special occasions, and needless to say this is among our personal favorites for romantic dining. The food is great, I can't say that I have enjoyed every single dish they serve, however, everything I’ve tried has been superb. We first came here last Father's Day Evening and they were serving as a special a seafood Scipppino . It was “bread-dippingly” delicious down to the last clam, scallop and mussel. Savory, FRESH and plentiful. I'll not forget this place. Service is good and in the classic European style.

Great Italian

By Jeff M |

This restaurant came highly recommended and is in Old Town. I had the lasagna. It's very thick and delicious. I followed that up with Tiramisu. For future reference the Tiramisu is for two people. But I rose to the occasion and I succeeded.

Nice restaurant, terrible traffic laws!

By MacMan1972 |

Restaurant was nice and staff attentive. Food was decent. Old Town San Diego, however is a traffic cops haven. I received a ticket for parking in a "loading zone". I never even knew something like that existed. Travelor beware....they're out to get us.

Dont waste your time

By Tamra W |

I can tell you I have never had such inattentive service from a waiter ever. The food was good but not special enough to compensate for the lack of service. Had to wave my wine glass in the air just to get another glass. Watched him entertain the table next to me but barely could get his attention at my table. I generally tip Well. This time I left a note on why he got zero.

A hidden Italian gem

By mopsos |

I am amittedly an Italian snob and thus, my expectations are lower with most Italian restaurants in America. We stumbled on this this wonderful Trattoria prior to the theater and discovered wonderful, fatta in Casa (Maid in house) delicate pasta dishes. This hidden gem, quietly existing for decades in old town, complete with live music on the deck, deserves a visit or a destination journey!

Good Italian Fare

By Danno2007 |

Monday evening dining at J & G's was good. Our pasta dishes were well prepared. Garlic bread was good. Our server seemed nice but possibly could have been projecting an understated patronizing tone. This could have been unintentional and may just be my perception. Regardless, not a bad choice.

A delighful ending to a long day of tourism

By tbrown6220 |

Dinner here after a day of touring San Diego that ended in Old Town was delightful. Perhaps the rainy day had keep most of the tourists a few blocks away. Regardless, food was great, waiters very attentive. Worth the stroll.

Go for the Shrimp Scampi - in Old Town

By Snorris57 |

Been going to Jack & Giulio's for 40 years now. One of us must order the Shrimp Scampi and we usually order one of the other dishes and share them. The Scampi is well known locally and the best I've ever had. Breaded, baked, and served with mushrooms and a champagne sauce it is still to die for. The other dishes are worthwhile too. They open at five and if you are early won't need reservations.

Good food but expensive

By _taraleno530 |

The scampi aka giulio was good but I couldn't finish it very large portion. M6 husband had the veal parmigiana good but very large portion.

Italian at its best

By magmur |

we found this place just walking by and we are glad we walked in. very professional charming service welcomed and seated us. we had a salad as an entry which would have been enough already with freshly grated parmesano, wonderful. as mains we had the lasagna ala casa, a big serving, delicious with the best tomato sauce I can remember in a decade, juicy beef and parmesano as nuch as you want, my hubbys chicken piccata was tender and delicios, with mushrooms. some draft beers and a real italian espresso and the bill was less than 80$, absolutely reasonable

Good Italian food

By Randy W |

I was surprised by the menu (it was very small), but the food was very good. The sauce wasn't the best I've had, but it tasted great. The service was spot on. I had the Valdostana di Vitello.

Went twice

By CRJ P |

We went twice to this restaurant, the first time because it was fairly near our hotel and not Mexican.Good Italian and Californian food and wine, comfortable restaurant with good friendly service.

Really good Italian cuisine

By Viviane B |

If you are tired of Mexican, American and Pizza this is for you. Really fine Italian cuisine and fast friendly service. The home made pasta specials were really authentic. We had a lovely dinner on the patio and enjoyed our meal and the wine immensely.

Great Italian restaurant

By bdmar67 |

The food was amazing and the owner is in back cooking, so you know it's good. Friendly staff! Can't wait to come back!

Go for Chocolate Mousse. Seriously!

By BechamelDC |

San Diego's Old Town District is known for its historical buildings, souvenir shops, and numerous cantinas serving Mexican food to large crowds, especially on weekends. Jack & Giulio's, a quiet and private Italian restaurant, seems a bit out of place in the neighborhood's somewhat honky-tonk atmosphere. We had spent an afternoon at the Balboa Park museums, and were looking for a light meal in a quieter environment. What we discovered was excellent Chocolate Mousse. Seriously! We both agreed it was the best we've had in several years: firm with a dark, bittersweet chocolate bite and garnished with fresh whipped cream. I'd come back again just for that dessert! Our entrees were spinach tortelloni in a mushroom sauce and fresh gnocchi in a tomato cream sauce. Both were tasty, but the portions were a bit too small. Nevertheless, the chocolate mousse elevates my overall rating. We were there on cool weekday night in March, and service was fine. Our meal, consisting of two glasses of wine, two pasta dishes, and one chocolate mousse cost about $35pp including tax and tip., .

Special Place

By Jonathan R |

I had my first date with my wife in Old Town. Three years later, I proposed to her in Old Town. Three years later, we got married in the Catholic Church in Old Towne. Two nights before the wedding, I took my groomsmen to Jack and Giulios and my wife and I always try to have one dinner there whenever we visit San Diego. Had dinner there again during Thanksgiving Week and had another awesome dinner. The menu isn't big which is great because some Italian/ pasta places often have such huge menus it takes hours to figure out what you want! It's simple at J & G's! And you can't go wrong with anything you eat and we always have huge portions and can't finish! We'll be back and thank you again for so many memories over the years!

Great Service! Not So Great Food!

By Ultimate Foodie |

The location of this recent is superb right in the heart of old town. We dined el fresco and it was lovely. Our server provided excellent service which was to be expected since it was a very slow Saturday night. We were quite surprised the restaurant wasn't packed. Although we enjoyed our glass of wine el fresco, the food was lackluster. For appetizer we had the caprese. While it was decent it lacked presentation. Hubby and I both ordered the caperless chicken piccata with vegetables. I have never had a chicken picatta with no capers. The chicken piccata was mediocre, I can make it better. For desert we had some kind of strawberry concoction that completely lacked presentation. Presented as a big blog of who knows what. It was the worst desert we have ever eaten that was sloppily put together. I guess they don't take pride in their presentation. A good chef will say "you eat with your eyes first". Overall the food was mediocre and the presentation failed miserably. The best part was a glass of wine el fresco. We will not be returning.

Highly recommended

By susan s |

Beautiful food and the friendliest ,kindest staff. Visited twice . Can recommend . You will not be disappointed . If we visit SD again we would return

Taking a break from a low-carb diet

By hikingaf |

Just on the fringe of the Hussle & Bussel part of Old Town. We dined at a table outside. The staff and the venue had an authentic talian flair with a little Frank Sinatra playing in the background. We had the Scampi Alla Giulio and the Lasagna Della Casa, finished with a Belgian Chocolate Mousse. We will definitely return.

Average at best

By Ashir T |

Restaurant is large with outdoor seating which was great on a nice evening. The food however was average. I had the spaghetti with garlic olive oil and pepper but the dish came with no pepper! Server told me that they don’t put Pepper because it is spicy. Then why have it in the description? I asked for a dessert recommendation and she suggested tiramisu which was not very good at all. It was very dense and did not have much of the espresso flavor. Overall it was disappointing.

Fresh, delicious food, friendly atmosphere,

By jmj555555 |

We had a very nice dinner here after a day spent touring San Diego. the minestrone was almost as good as my Mom's, and the chopped salad was tasty, and a generous enough portion to share. Pasta was delicious, as was the tiramisu. Both food and drink prices were reasonable, and service was good.....highly recommend!

Evening dinner

By Joebretired |

Stayed in Old Town, San Diego, the night before our flight back home. Dinner at Jack & Giulio's Italian Restaurant. Dined on veal scaloppine piccata with angel hair pasta. Food AND service excellent. Italian beer very good. No room for desert! Highly recommend if you are in the area.

Great Italian in Old Town

By rajaalbarb |

Picked up friends at the train station in Old Town, almost could have walked here. Pasta with clams, & chicken picatta were yummy. It was a perfect evening to sit outside. An excellent choice of wines and very good service. I would definitely go back.

Good Italian Food

By valericl2018 |

Good restaurant (close to our hotel) - there was just the 2 of us - The waiter gave his recommendations & we were really looking forward to our meals - we said it sounded so good that we'd probably come again. We ordered different meals (as always just to be on the safe side and taste the other meal). Both of us ate well & overall we were happy with our meals. Couldn't help but feel that they really wanted us to order some wine ... a bit hard when you don't drink. Service was a bit slow which was a bit odd given that restaurant had just opened for dinner and we were the 1st to arrive. For whatever reason we did not go back - probably due to the price and the food while good - wasn't as good as the waiter had made it out to be.

Jack & Giulio's is GREAT!!

By JohnDeereJim |

Our son lives in San Diego's Little Italy, but he decided to take us to Jack & Giulio's for my Valentine birthday dinner (we went on Sunday night to avoid the Valentine's Day rush). I have eaten at a number of Italian restaurants and I would say this one is the best; my wife agrees. Our menu selections were Chicken Piccata, Veal Marsala, and Veal "Parm." The food was superb and the service outstanding. While we could have walked to a place in Little Italy, it was worth a drive to Old Town!

Good food and a great waiter

By pepper i |

There were 7 of us and we did not have a reservation, but they waiter busted his pic to set-up tables to accommodate us without any negative comments. In fact, he really made the night. His recommendations were spot on and the food was excellent. This is the only Italian restaurant in Old Town, amidst soo many Mexican Food places (good, but we needed a change). The second time we ate there, the food was just as good, but the waiter wasn't. We looked everywhere we could think but cannot find his name (only Waiter #9)

Terrific pasta!

By sreptile |

Had a great meal at Jack & Giulio's on a recent visit to San Diego. We eat quite a bit of pasta at home, and therefore I don't eat much pasta at restaurants as I'm frequently disappointed. This was excellent!

Really good authentic Italian

By Linds-sax |

Lovely food, excellent ingredients, great service. Authentic Italian dishes. How an Italian should be.

Very enjoyable

By Ellie |

Good Italian food. It is located in San Diego Old Town. If you just don't feel like having Mexican food again, this place is an excellent choice for Italian food. The menu is not extensive but everything they have on it is good. Service was top notch also. Highly recommend.

Not bad, but I've had much better Italian food. Decent option if you don't want Mexican.

By CStewart826 |

Went with a group of girlfriends. It appeared than the waiter was not well versed in Italian wines. We asked a few questions about the Italian wines (only a couple reds were offered) but the server didn't seem to know. I ordered the veal piccata and it was very salty and not as tender as expected. The tortellini was very rich, but delicious says my friend. The bread was good and very warm.

Decent food, good service.

By ManCity75 |

I love Italian food, but where we live we literally have 0 Italian restaurants. As soon as I seen this place, I was excited to try it. We dined as a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 kids. The restaurant does seem a little dated and tired, but I really feel this helped to create an old school Italian feel. We had the bruschetta which we loved and the table bread was fresh and warm. We all chose different dishes from the menu, which unless you wanted veal I don't think was varied enough. Two of my personal favourites were not on the menu, aswell as a couple of others. The food was fresh though, the pasta I thought was perfect. All in all, it was not a bad meal. It was a little pricey for what we had though. I would rather try another Italian restaurant before going back. Again, I'm not saying it was bad, it just didn't do enough for me.

A Great Little Italian Place For Special Occasions

By jessye814 |

We have been here twice. The first time it was really good, so we decided to go back for Valentine's Day. We were lucky because we got there before 5:30pm when the reservations started and we didn't have one and they were booked up. We were a little disappointed to find out that they didn't have their usual menu. It was a VD special menu. So we ordered form it and it did not disappoint. I had the Veal Parmesan and my husband had the Chicken Marsala and both of us ordered a glass of Chianti. Everything was soooo good.

Delicious!

By Barbara C |

Great dinner and service! We were looking for something in Old Town other than Mexican food on our last night. This little gem was perfect! Outdoor seating was very nice. I would definitely recommend it.

Quiet Dinner

By Janine813 |

Our first time eating here and we loved it. A quiet restaurant with a nice wine list and great food selection

Soooo Good! Take a break from the Mexican Food!

By Rebecca A |

In San Diego for a week on business and I love Mexican food! But I needed a break from it, so my co-worker and I tried this place and SO glad we did. it was ranked in the Top 10 of Old Town, so we thought why not. We got the panzerotti (with béchamel sauce) and the cannelloni (with marinara sauce) They were in a crepe rather than a traditional noodle and they were delicious! We were scraping the plates by the time we were done. We also ordered the garlic bread, which was good, but not the best I've ever had. And we started with a Caesar and J&G house salad, with their house dressing (amazing!). Do yourself a favor and take a break from the Mexican food and eat here!

Best Italian I've ever eaten

By Sally P |

My husband and I were in Old Town San Diego for a week and were tired of Mexican food. Jack & Giulio's was a short walk from our hotel and decided to give it a try. Without a doubt, we both agreed it was the best pasta we ever had. Since we both had pasta, I cannot comment on other dishes. The service was fine, restaurant appeared clean and the atmosphere was upscale for an old town restaurant. Our only regret is we discovered this place on our last night in town, otherwise, we would have eaten there every evening.

We love this place!

By happytravels202 |

We make it a point to go to dinner here whenever we are in San Diego. We found it by accident and are so glad we did. The staff are friendly, the food is soooo good! and the ambiance is very nice.

A Worthy Alternative To Mexican Cuisine in Old Town

By WmNess |

I wanted to take a break from Mexican cuisine while visiting San Diego and happened upon Jack & Giulio's very close to my hotel. The flavors and quality of the food was excellent especially in light of what I felt to be moderate pricing. I will definitely be dining there again when in San Diego.

Italian in the Heart of Old town

By Faith R |

An interesting choice, Italian food in Old Town. The restaurant had a warm, intimate Italian feel to it. The main restaurant was full but the host offered to seat us in the patio area. This area is more of a warm weather choice and it was a cool evening. The canvass, zippered enclosure is showing its age and starting to shrink in places. Cold air swept in from the areas where the zippers could no longer close. There were some powerful heaters blowing from one side but the draft from the enclosure was somewhat difficult to deal with. The food in this restaurant was amazing. We had the brushcetta to start and it was lovely. Lots of flavour and just enough garlic. Both our pasta meals were excellent and very filling. We finished up with dessert and coffee. I really enjoyed the rich chocolate mousse but was not as impressed with the tiramisu, however my friend really enjoyed it. The server was excellent, very attentive, friendly and helpful. The visit was very enjoyable and we left feeling satisfied with our dining experience.

Diamond in the ruff

By Tkwill4 |

From the time we entered to the time we left it was a fantastic experience. Our server was the best. He knew his wine, the menu, and knew how to entertain. The food was better than we had in Italy in 2004. The patio had a Mediterranean feel and the weather was matching. If our stay was longer we would have visited again.

Best Italian Food…in Old Town San Diego

By Carolyn C |

Odd to eat Italian food in Old Town, San Diego, but we wanted a change from the touristy Mexican restaurants. So we tried Jack & Giulio’s and what a TREAT! My husband had the special chopping and found it so tender and delicious, served with angel hair at his request. I ate Tortellini Verde, spinach pasta filled with ricotta, Parmesan and Porcini mushroom sauce. The sauce was to die for and the Porcinis were delicious. Chocolate mousse for dessert…Yum. A bit pricey, but really worth every penny.

Top spot

By Rakehoe |

We walked in for dinner group of 9 with no reservation, no problem. Efficient service and tasty food. Wanted some veggies so ordered a veal parma, very nice. Followed up with a chocolate mousse. It was very rich and quite firm, not a light fluffy mousse. Very tasty again but ½ was enough for me. Happily passed off the rest to another guest. Good ambience.

Nice Change of Pace

By NoReservations1 |

On the last night of our trip to San Diego, we were looking for an alternative to the ubiquitous Mexican restaurants. My wife is Italian and was in the mood for red sauce. We were in Old Town and stumbled across Jack & Julio’s so decided to give it a try. Good choice! Nice ambiance, attentive service, and outstanding food. Great Manhattans too!

Nice food

By Nerida S |

The food here was lovely although the service was a little slower than we like, but to be fair we do have a toddler so like to get in and get eating faster than those without kids. Overall a nice dining experience

A great Italian restaurant

By knittinggrandma |

I love Italian food and this was a marvelous find! Hand made pasta nicely presented! Good wine. Great salads and vegetables! Oh yes and then there was the ricotta cheesecake! The service was great. The only semi sour note was they wouldn't do single checks for a party of six. We managed very happily!

A pleasant Italian restaurant outside of Little Italy

By Phillip F |

We dined at this restaurant and enjoyed our meal. They have parking which makes this restaurant attractive in Old Town. The food was good, the service friendly and attentive. I would return here.

A Great Evening

By I13JAmarym |

The food and wait staff were wonderful. We were never rushed. The pasta and desert was freshly prepared and tasty. We ended up having two deserts because it was so good. They had a good wine selection and it is easy walking distance to the Courtyard by Marriott.

When you're ready for something different to eat in Old Town!

By SDSteve |

Truly one of our favorite Italian Restaurants in San Diego. We love sitting on their outside patio. The lasagna is some of the best in the area. Great selection of wines. Service is old-school Italian and very professional. They have a niche being one of the few and longest lasting non-Mexican restaurants in Old Town. Highly recommended.

Food was good but restaurant smells old

By Karl Hoffmann |

Had a difficult time understanding the waiter, the special that I thought he’s said was 20.00 was 30.00, so that was a bit of a shock. Had a miscommunication about the check since I was there on business and my wife had to be figured separately. Besides that the gespatchio was great and my wife had veal which she said was very good. Prices are kind of high as well. The desert was different, thought we were getting a custard and it was more like flavored yogurt. Based on everything don’t think I would go back.

most authentic Italian ice had in America.

By kevindickerson88 |

I lived in Italy for five years. I can say that this is the most authentic Italian food I've ever had outside of Italy. I highly recommend the classico antipasto (cured ham, salami, buffalo mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, olives, and caprse. Follow with the scampi sauteed with mushrooms. Of course you must finish with an authentic Italian espresso. You will not leave hungry nor unsatisfied. Classic neopolitan love songs were playing and added to the authenticity of the experience. Also I cannot close without mentioning the service which was excellent. I did not want for anything.

wonderful home cooked food

By phoebe3 |

We went to this restaurant for a celebration. we were in ages one 4 year old, 1 couple in their 30's, one woman in her fifties and a grandmother in her 70's. We had awesome appetizers, home made main dish, great dessert and a bottle of Prosceco. You can eat either inside or outside in the garden - we ate outside in the garden next to the fountain and flowering Bouganvillia. This restaurant is in Old Town San Diego. Would recommend for food and for the excellent service.

Walking distance from Marriott - Old Town

By Nina V |

We came here to meet our friends while traveling through San Diego mostly because it was the most quiet restaurant in the area, and the only Italian within the walking distance from our hotel. The menu offers all usual italian treats, though portions are smaller and pricier compared to other restaurants of this level. My veal scallopiny , my husbands chicken dish tasted the same b/c of the same souse, or so i thought as both were very salty. My friend was very happy with Nidi Di Rondine (Swallow’s Nest) which was beautifully presented, as well as Scampi alla Giulio which was huge. The service was very attentive and we all had a great time that night. Probably, we'll come back to this restaurant next time visiting the area, i'll just ask the chef to skip the salty sauce for my order.

Lovely evening, great food!

By Allan J |

It was our last night in SD, we had over-consumed seafood and Mexican food, and were looking for something different. We've always loved dining outdoors and this place was close. Broad menu selection, great service.

Good Italian

By adam-kelley |

I had dinner here and it was enjoyable. The service was excellent. I had a California salad to start, good but a little salty, then veal Marsalla. It was very good.

Inconsistant meals

By Jay A |

Our first visit in years was a very pleasant experience. We returned with another friend and were disappointed by the poor quality of the meal. The ravioli was wonderful the first time but this time it was covered with congealed cheese. The veal was not tender but the sauce was fine. We are unmotivated to try the place again because there are many good restaurants in San Diego. It seemed to us that this is just a tourist restaurant and not one for locals. On the positive side, the service was good and pleasant as was the ambience.

My Taste Buds Were Awaken!

By Matusla |

My friend raved about this restaurant on his last visit to San Diego, but his memory for names were limited. We finally located the Jack & Gilulio's not even close to his memory for names. After this meal I was so glad we did not give up. The wives gave this place great reviews on their dishes, us guys cleaned up our plates. A reviewer mention "A Gem in Old Town" this right among numerous Mexican Restaurants. Several times we were approached I presume the owner, if everything was good! No complaints and leave room for desert.

Good food, but...

By A S |

Was a recommendation by the hotel. It was late, close to closing, and we were 1 out of 3 groups seated inside. Food was great, very romantic setting. Server was friendly. We realized we lost our cell phone. Went back and server said it was not there. We went back again and a nice young man from the kitchen offered up his phone so we could call ours. Phone ended up in another booth (which was empty earlier) under napkins...we never went anywhere near that booth. We chose not to say anything to the server because we didn't want to ruin our vacation. We were thankful just to have our phone back and thanked the young man for his help.

Valentines Dinner

By Emory B |

Jack and Giulio's presented a special valentines dinner for a fixed price. Nice selection of entrees. Good service. Highly recommemded for a romantic dinner. Good wine selection.

Don’t go there, restaurant closed!!!

By Hans V |

Visited restaurant 30 minutes before closing time. A totally disinterested waiter send us away because they closed early because of lack of clients. People with such an attitude are not able to cook a decent meal and don’t deserve a visit. It’s obviously all about the money. Shame on them. Don’t go there.

Cozy Italian restaurant

By ChefAnnMt_Laurel_NJ |

Comfortable Italian restaurant that makes their own pasta. I had a fresh green salad and homemade spinach cannelloni with ricotta and swiss chard that was so good I didn't want to finish it, I really savored each bite. Service was very good, ambiance cozy, prices fair. Recommend.

Long time patronage has its perks! THANKS JACK AND JOSE!

By MaisonRavalet |

We didn’t make reservations although it was early on a Saturday night but it was busy and the new hostess turned us away. After we left Jose a long time employee came after us and said since we were long time regulars that they would set up an extra table for two on their beautiful patio! Enjoyed a lovely dinner with lasagna and Veal Valdostana! Legendary food and service!

Nice Italian place in Old Town

By JFredPhoenixAZ |

I've eaten here a couple of times on business trips to San Diego. Great location in old town. An easy walk from my hotel. They have a really nice patio and have even had live music on an earlier visit. Inside is small but comfortable. No cheesy faux Italian decor. Service has been very good each time. Friendly, quick and professional. They know the menu and won't hesitate to recommend something. I've stuck to salads and pastas On my visits, so I can't comment on the main dishes. Salads have always been fresh with good quality ingredients. They don't over dress the salad and I appreciate that. I think I've had 3 different pastas now and all were very good. The gnocchi actually qualify as great. Soft pillows of perfectly cooked dough. The cream sauce rocked too! Desert offerings didn't impress so I skipped it. Coffee was excellent though. My only gripe is they don't bring bread to the table. No Italian meal is complete without bread! That's a crime and should be fixed immediately. Bring me bread next time and I will give you the fifth star.

Comfortable & friendly, BUT----

By Barry L |

My wife and I met friends who wanted to return there for diner. We had not been there in many years. We had a nice warm feeling upon entering and were greeted by a very friendly waitress. I enjoyed the shrimp bisque and the Amber beer on tap. I did not enjoy the veal with eggplant with cheese that I ordered. Two of us had that dish and both were overcooked, and devoid of flavor. My wife ordered the Shrimp Scampi, which was plentiful, but also lacked flavor and seemed not to contain garlic, which would then not be considered Scampi. One of us did not think that his drink was made well.

Authentic

By desertspirit |

My wife just returned from Italy and we had dinner here tonite during Day of the Dead festival. Excellent service. Wonderful Italian dishes. My wife really knows about the food from her trip. Food here comparable to a good restaurant in Florence.

You really should stop here.

Great J & G Manhattan and really yummy mousse and mussels. Sergio is the best ever waiter! the setting is so relaxing. Highly recommend.

VERY GOOD ITALIAN IN A SURPRISING PLACE

By Cary L |

This long-time family owned and operated Italian restaurant is a hidden gem. It's located at the south end of Old Town, just past all the Mexican restaurants. We had an early evening dinner with friends on the spacious outdoor patio. A wall screens out street sounds so conversation was easy. The pastas all are hand-made on the premises. Manicotti, ravioli, and fettucini all were excellent. So was the shrimp bisque. The wine list is short but you'll find something you like. Service is efficient without hovering. Parking is difficult in the neighborhood, so it's important to know they have a private lot behind the restaurant.

way better than the Mexican joints

By globalcharlie |

Really good food, great staff but it is Italian in Old Town San Diego which means it is almost required that you go out for Mexican food. You will walk by a dozen of them on your way to Jack & Giulio's but they are exceedingly gringo and noisy whereas this place is rather quiet. They are justly known for the quality of their meals and I thought it was a totally fair price for anything on the menu. They have no cannoli.

One of our favorites for 35 years!

By Randy H |

We started going there when it was in PB back in the early 80's and it quickly became one our family's and many of my friend's favorite even as it moved to Old Town. I now live in Florida and have not been there in a few years so any recent changes I am not aware of if any but had to give it a review since I always make a stop there when I am back in Diego. The owner has always treated us with the utmost professionalism and will even make some of the old school dishes and desserts for us if we call ahead. The Scampi Alla Giulio and Filet de Cognac are off the charts. I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal there and the quality of food is top notch. We love it there!!

Wonderful experience

So glad we walked past all the Mexican restaurants with long lines to eat at Jack & Giulio's. Comfortable seating. Classical music. Amazing pasta. Reasonable prices (I had lasagna for $17).

Good antidote to the relentless American Mexican restaurants on the strip in the Old Town. Nice food and friendly prompt service. Exactly the menu you'd expect in an Italian restaurant.

An Old Town Surprise

By baltoro |

Old town is known for its Mexican restaurants. Jack and Giullo's is out of place, but it is a fine Italian restaurant. We ate there the other night and had a terrific meal. Our drinks were good, the wine delicious, and the service excellent. The prices are very reasonable.I had a breaded veal cutlet that was served with pasta marinara. It was very good, and I liked the fact that pasta came with the veal.

Best Marsala on the west coast

By Brookspal |

They have been serving excellent Italian cuisine for years. Revisiting tonight was a joy. The bread was good, the house salad with walnuts was scrumptious. The server Sergio was wonderful. The Chicken Marsala was the best I have eaten on the west coast. All diners enjoyed their different dishes. I will visit every time when in San Diego

Terrific Lasagna

Hotel rcommended this restaurant. Got a free shuttle ride ( didn't need one as it was only three blocks away) but was appreciated. We ate early (5:45) as we flying out early the next day. We had a bottle of Tempanillo and home made lasagna. They were both excellant. Great service and good food...what more can you get?

Very good, but not for kids

By AZfamily22 |

I asked the hotel clerk for a nice "family restaurant". They sent us here. It would have been perfect for my wife and I if we were alone. The food was great and it had a nice location in old town. The oly complaint is that it;s not for kids. No kids menus, so the kids paid full price for their meals and there were no plain entrees that kids would really enjoy (or maybe that's just my kids, they are fussy eaters).

Pleasant surprise in Touristville.

It’s a pleasure to escape from the relentless tourism of Old Town and its avalanche of mediocre Mexican restaurants to Jack and Giulio’s Italian restaurant. Good and serious Italian cuisine and fine personal service. Quite a treat!

Great Italian Food in Old Town

If you get tired of Mexican food in Old Town, this is a nice alternative. The food was very good and and combined with good wine and good friends, it was a perfect evening. The pastas are homemade and excellent.

Italian creative in Old Town

After a long wonderfully exhausting day at the San Diego Zoo we needed a nice quiet place to unwind and decided an Italian dinner was the order of the day. Jack & Giulio's was just down the street from our hotel so we stopped by to open the place at 5:00 pm. Our waiter was a bit surprised to see us and just a bit over the top being friendly. We looked at the menu and the wine list and he suggested a nice chilled chardonnay. We had a wonderful dinner, excellent food, well prepared and tastefully presented. Dinner with wine was a bit pricey but in the end it was worth every penny.

Excellent food, reasonable prices

This restaurant was recommended by the desk clerk at our hotel, and she was right. They claim they have the best shrimp scampi in San Diego. Can't say for sure about that since our experience in San Diego is not extensive, but it was certainly the best shrimp scampi I've had in recent memory. The salads were tasty, the chicken marsala great, the pasta delicious, the desert divine. If you're visiting San Diego's Old Town district this is a great choice.

Very Good Italian food in Old Town area

Enjoyed our dinner here on a recent visit. We had Scampi alla Giulio a bounty of wild-caught white shrimp, butterflied, sautéed with mushrooms, and white wine served with pasta or vegetable of the day $28 and the special of the day Cioppino also $28. Both were excellent. The Cioppino had very large mussels that we can't usually get on the East Coast!

great place in old town

This was some amazing Italian food. The atmosphere is terrific, the prices good, and service was fast.

Superb service

We were here on a Saturday evening. The restaurant had a good crowd, but we had a reservation. We were seated immediately. We both had pasta dishes, one meat, one seafood, and my wife had two drinks that she liked. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. We would definitely recommend this for a nice couples evening.

No finesse

I noticed that this hasn't been reviewed before. The reason we went was we booked it through open table and in the area of Old Town in San Diego we wanted to visit this Italian restaurant came out well. We started with bruschetta and marinated olives. The olives were very interesting and flavoursome the bruschetta was bland. For main course I had a signature dish of butterflied prawns and mushrooms. It wasn't appetising to look at, the prawns lacked any flavour and I got bored before finishing. The other main course was veal and aubergine parmigiana, the whole covered in thick breadcrumbs and the veal was chewy. We finished with a coffee together with two beers and two glasses of wine this came to around $150 with tip. We sat in a booth with hardboard divider, there were never more than six people I eating so the atmosphere was somewhat lacking. Service was good it was the food and ambience were lacking. I wouldn't go back.

Just a weekend in beautiful San Diego

We we're great at the door with a friendly smile, we had to wait about 20 min but it was well worth it. Our waiter was cordial and friendly and the food was excellent. We will certainly come back.

Sweet atmosphere, great food

Our first night in San Diego and we were looking for something quiet and relaxing. Jack & Giulio's fit the bill perfectly. Such a warm and inviting family owned restaurant. Our waiter was attentive without being intrusive. My husband the Veal & Eggplant Parmigiana and I had the Tortellini Verdi. Both were delicious. They have and outside seating area where there were several groups enjoying an evening with friends. Overall a great experience. We will definitely eat there again the next trip to San Diego.

Great food but service is lacking

By travelbug41563 |

Went here with another couple. It was around 7pm, the restaurant wasn't busy at all. We chose to eat inside rather than outside. Our waiter was a bit odd. He was helpful with our wine selections and all but that's where it ended. Our dinners all came from the kitchen rather quickly and brought by the kitchen staff which is not unusual at all. What was unusual was the waiter never came back over to see how our meals were or if we needed anything else. So we asked another person for some bread. None was brought to the table. Our spaghetti & meat sauce and meatballs were very good. Meatballs were $3.00 extra and everyone was pleased with them. The sauce had a bit of a "kick" to it but not overly spicy at all. Our waiter finally showed up and we asked for the bill. As a side note we asked at the time, that we were seated for separate checks. Our checks came with a torn sticky note with the total only!!!!!!!!!!! not being able to get our waiter back we asked the hostess for an itemized bill for each bill or we would not pay. How bizarre to get a total on ripped paper!!! This is the 21st century isn't it? She came through, with what I might add, a hand written itemization!!! We paid and left.....The food is great but the service was awful therefore a two rating was given.

Best Scampi

The Scampi de Giulio is the signature dish here. Large, Mexican brown shrimp with lots of mushrooms. SO GOOD! Try the gorgonzola dressing on the bread-yum!

Italian in a Sea of Mexico

Jack & Giulio's was real treat. Great Caesar Salad, tender veal and the staples for the kids (Fettucini Alfredo & Spaghetti & Meatballs) were very good. The pasta sauce was excellent. A little pricey but the food was terrific.
