Good, but not Great

By Gay O |

The reviews and the recommendation of friend sent us to Jackson Fillmore for our anniversary. We had a 5:30 p.m. reservation, and we were seated promptly. The restaurant is not large, and the tables are very close together. You will definitely get to know your neighbors. Ours were delightful. We started with an order of gnocchi as an appetizer. The sauce was excellent. The gnocchi were quite good. I ordered the veal chop cooked medium. It came out absolutely raw on the inside, but they did take it back, and when cooked properly, it was delicious. My husband's chicken and sausage dish was a disappointment. Instead of juicy chicken breast or thigh meat, there were just two wings. The sausage was very spicy. For dessert we shared the zabione. Quite good, but there are better versions elsewhere. The wine list was impressive, but everything was expensive. In a neighborhood spot one might expect a few choices in the moderate price range. For $25 we ordered just one glass apiece. The dinner felt very rushed, as if the waiters were eager to turn over the table quickly. At least three times we were asked if they could clear the plates the moment we set a fork down.

Wonderful neighborhood restaurant

Delicious Italian restaurant recommended by local friends. Average prices, nice size portions, wonderful specials and large wine choices. Accommodating with our allergy concerns with great service!

A classic for two

By Jim G |

Delicious, local and worth the wait. Italian with a heart and a staff working hard for their customers. If you don't like it, you don't get San Francisco.

Dinner with Family

By indytrims |

We have two daughters and their families in San Francisco, so we are out here often. One of our very favorite dinner spots is the Jackson Fillmore Trattoria. This is a neighborhood gem in the trendy Pacific Heights district. The restaurant is small and intimate. The Italian cuisine is out of this world (and reasonably priced. Service is always excellent. You can have fun walking the streets of San Fran's "North Beach" Little Italy, but if you want a memorable culinary experience it is worth a short Uber ride from downtown to Jackson Fillmore. (And then you walk down the street after and take in the vibrant evening scene.

An intimate Italian restautant

Jackson Filmore, a small Italian restaurant at that corner is a reasonably price and pleasant little restaurant. It has standard as well as innovative Italian food and a good (not overpriced wine list)

Charming little neighborhood place

By Geoff S |

The Jackson Fillmore Trattoria is nothing to look at from the street, in fact one might even drive by. Once inside it becomes immediately apparent that this is a traditional trattoria in every sense. The service was great and some of the items we had were excellent. My wife and I loved the antipasti frito. She had a very nice ravioli dish and I had the red snapper "special." Unfortunately, I seriously doubt it was fresh red snapper. The fish was overwhelmed by a tomato sauce which was overly spicy. It was very difficult to enjoy the fish. We won't be put off by this one dish and intend to come back as the menu offers lots of choice and we noticed a number of other dishes being served which we might order next time. We really enjoyed the charm of the place. Like so many places in the city, if you are driving, go a little early so you can find parking.

REALLY BAD

By Ken S |

First. The food was cold a d tasteless. Second. The Maitre de was rude. Dont go if you dont have to unless you are forced at gun point.

Disappointing return

By Jerry B |

We returned to Jackson Fillmore after two decades, where we had our first date. We had made reservations weeks in advance, anticipating a delightful evening reminiscing about our time in the city. Upon arrival, we were seated at the bar. We inquired about the complimentary bruschetta, as we noticed other tables being served. After confirming, we received the bruschetta, which was quite good. Next, we ordered the Portobello appetizer. However, we were never informed about any special offers that we would have preferred. When we reviewed the bill, we discovered that we had been charged more than expected. Upon asking why, we were informed that they had run out of the Chianti Classico and had substituted a more expensive wine without our knowledge. “check your bill.” Overall, the food was enjoyable, but the experience was quite disappointing. There are clearly better options available for the price.

Happiness in SF

By jilldenton |

Five Stars all the way! From the great service to the delicious food, this place is fantastic! We started with the Carpaccio di Zucchini: Julienned zucchini with toasted almonds & pecorino (I would go back just for this alone!) to the Insalata Primavera: Baby artichokes, asparagus, Fava beans and English peas marinated in olive oil with mint and pecorino cheese on a bed of arugula and Pollo alla Noci: Boneless breasted chicken with mushrooms, walnuts, pine nuts, sherry wine, & a touch of cream and finished the meal with buttermilk brownie. We love the ambience, sitting at the counter and the friendly staff. You need a reservation, they're packed all the time, or show up when they open the doors and grab a seat at the counter.

Welcoming restaurant in Pacific Heights

By OsloMusikant |

Being jet lagged I stubled into Jackson Filmore quite early, and I enjoyed my meal while the place filled up with what mostly looked like local customers. Couples, families, childen, a mix of old and young that makes for a cozy atmosphere. The food was very good and the service was great.

Great little Italian restuarant

By Jack V |

This is a great little local Italian restaurant that has been in SF for years yet this was our first trip. The food and service were quite good. Many of the patrons you could tell were local regulars the way the staff greeted them. The red fish with hot sauce was excellent. The artichoke and meat ball starters were good too. The seafood pasta was good but suffered a little with small over cooked shrimp and the calamari had little flavor. The wine list was very reasonably priced and approachable. And the tiramisu ending was perfection. Stop by and you will definitely experience why this place is a mainstay in SF.

Great little Italian that is reasonably priced

By Budcliff |

If you are looking for decent Italian food that isn’t over priced then this is a great little place. (Approx. $17 - $22 main meal). We didn’t have a reservation and arrived around 7pm (table for 3) and the place was busy so may need to call ahead to reserve a table. Dress code was mixed. Some people were dressed up, whereas we had been walking around San Fran so were very casual. A local recommended it to us and I would definitely recommend to others.

a must stop on my visits

By Utahtami |

The food is outstanding, the feel is being with a staff who loves their jobs. The Zabaglione is alone worth the visit.

Good food, service and ambience

By BDavid0327 |

We almost walked right by this restaurant, but were directed in by a neighbor who overheard us talking about where the restaurant was located. Fortunately, we found it. No reservations, but we were told we had an hour and a half to eat before we had to go. Food great, service attentive but not overwhelming; atmosphere casual and comforting. Highly recommend.

A happy and consistent experience

By TheWillingTraveler |

Jackson Fillmore is a gold standard neighborhood restaurant -- no Michelin stars, but delicious, classic Italian food with just enough inventiveness to keep it interesting. It's usually crowded, but you can get reservations a day or two in advance. The best 'Carbonara' in San Francisco, a phenomenal 'Contadino Misto' that's a hearty and well seasoned plate of Calabrese sausage, pan roasted chicken, mushrooms, garlic and potatoes. This is the restaurant of choice for locals, sort of the Garibaldi's on the Fillmore but far more lively in the food and atmosphere.

Busy, chaotic, delicious

By z2316 |

Friendly, non fancy service. Good, simple well prepared food. A great dinner experience. Had delicious, perfect al dente spaghetti, good wine suggestion, and delicious complementary bruschetta.

Consistently Great Food and Service!

By calnorth1 |

Our family has gone to Jackson Fillmore for 5+ years. We go about twice per year as we do not live in San Francisco. We have had consistently great wine, meals, dessert - and overall experience. After 5 years many of the staff are the same. - JF must be doing something right !! They recognize us and we them. There is always a warm greeting and nice good bye. We have tried many of the dishes and have never been disappointed - great flavors, good amount of food, wonderful smells. The restaurant is always bustling. Yes, tables are quite close, but that's part of the experience. The staff is very knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list. Thank you to Jack, Kelly, Casey and the rest of the staff (wish I knew all your names!). Your food and service always keep us coming back for more!!

Stick to the basic pasta dishes (i.e. don't order any seafood or meat dishes)...our you might get sick. I've been to this place 2 times (ordered seafood and meat) and got sick both times. I know I'm not the only one who has had this experience. Cute location, cute setting, friendly service...but honestly too hyped up for what it is. It's too bad because I really wanted to like it since it is conveniently down the street from my place. Too many other good neighborhood restaurants to go in the area. Don't waste your time!

Delicious Italian

My husband and I had the tortellini and chicken with mushrooms and split them. They were both lick the bowl clean delicious.

Admittedly, I love this...

By John B |

Admittedly, I love this place because I used to live right around the corner and the service was fast, the food always good, and the staff friendly... Not a world class place, but a great local Italian eatery that never disappoints

artichokes - ammmmmazing

By pointypedro |

always one of my go to's when i visit the city. definitely recommend the stuffed artichoke for an appy. not always on the menu, but you can almost always order is "off-menu." Place is small and the line can be long, but definitely worth the wait.

Good neighborhood tratoria

By Fred R |

Been several times - alone and with others. Friendly house staff - some more than others. Good, not great, food - typical italian. excellent salads, modest wine selection. nice, relaxed place, but there may be a wait.

Great, Small Neighborhood Place

By Anthony A |

I love Jackson Fillmore. Great food, great atmosphere, great waiters. It's my favorite place in San Francisco. This is definitely a neighborhood-style place. It's small ... not more than a dozen tables, and some seats at the "bar". If you get a chance while you're in San Francisco, go.

Superior food; great service

By WAStraveler |

Had a fabulous dinner with family the Friday after Thanksgiving. Starting with the complimentary bruchetta, everything was delicious, from the calamari to my butternut squash pasta special. I don't even like gnocchi, and my son's was light and yummy. Low-key, comfortable atmosphere; upscale food. Prices fair, too. Make sure to get a reservation. A fun and delicious dining experience.

Excellent food and great...

Excellent food and great Italian wine selection. Lots of flavor.

Great food, lively place

By helen236 |

How lucky for us that such a good restaurant was 2 blocks from our hotel. Our starter of burrata and figs was perfect. Our pastas were also delicious, great selection of wine. Wish this trattoria was near to where I lived. Will definitely visit again

Happy Happy Happy

By Marjorie Y |

What a treat to walk into the new to us Jackson Fillmore Trattoria and enjoy such a fine meal. The roasted portobello mushrooms on arugula. Just delicious. I had the carbonara which was very well executed and yummy. My partner had the shrimp in a spicy tomato sauce and chorizo and while it was good, the flavor of the shrimps was somewhat overwhelmed by the sauce. The wait staff is terrific and friendly. Even the kitchen staff is welcoming. We will be back and try to leave room for dessert.

Scrumptious Italian!

By Sudsarama |

If you have the patience to wait for a table it's worth it, but call ahead anyway! Seriously, it's true family style Italian fare that is to die for, and the service is always fun.

Fun night with friends Bob and Kiki...

By assessmenttraini2016 |

This is a destination restaurant. The dishes are excellent from start to finish. I have sampled their menu in two past visits, but this third experience topped them all. We had pasta, and chicken, and seafood, and wine. I recommend this little place to anyone who can secure a table. It's tight, it's hard to find, and it's one of those places you'll be able to brag about to your friends. Bon Appetit...

A fabulous, TREMENDOUS Trattoria in the Heart of Pacific Heights

By Bob F |

I've been a patron of Jackson Fillmore since their opening in the mid 80's. For anyone familiar with San Francisco, NO restaurant survives in San Francisco longer than 5 years unless it is SPECTACULAR. Even though Jack sold his restaurant a few years back (and haven't been here since moving away last year), the food and service are as good or BETTER than ever before. This is easily among my top 5 favorite restaurants in San Francisco. As for what to order, well, you can't go wrong with ANYTHING on the menu. It's all great! Personally, I always get either the Contadino Misto or the Pasta GOA, which, if not featured on the daily menu, the staff is happy to make upon request.

Fairly good restaurant, average price

By Enrico C |

I tried this restaurant during a very short visit to San Francisco, after checking the reviews on TripAdvisor for italian restaurants. I am italian and I tend to choose italian cuisine even when staying abroad. The service was good, and people inside provided a warming atmosphere. The food was fairly good, although quite americanized (I guess not surprising). I found it a bit pricy compared to the quality of the food but probably it is just common like this being it California. I can recommend it in any case if you are hoping for some tasty italian-style pasta.

Tasty and diverse menu and for Fillmore St., reasonably-priced

By Melany W |

Loved this place and every dish ordered by a party was shared by everyone because the quality of food is so high and everyone wanted to taste everything!

Great neighborhood spot

By alicestader |

Jackson Fillmore Trattoria is a cozy little neighborhood restaurant in the Fillmore District. I recently went there for dinner with two friends. The restaurant's decor is very simple in keeping with the family/neighborhood motif. We were immediately greeted at the door and sat on time for our reservation. A ton of reviews on Yelp complain about the size of the restaurant and the wait for a table. To those people who don't appreciate the cozy friendly neighborhood vibe of this place, you should hit the local Olive Garden. When a restaurant claims they are "cozy", it means they are small, so plan accordingly. I ordered the Linguini Fra Diavolo which claims to be "a total Jackson Fillmore classic", but sadly I wasn't very impressed. The sauce was nice, but lacked the spice that I usually find in a Fra Diavolo sauce. I was expecting my mouth to be on fire with the devil, but sadly it wasn't. My friends ordered the Zuppetta Di Pesce and the Polla Alla Noci. The Zuppetta Di Pesce was a hit and my friend was very happy with her cioppino-like dish. The Pollo Alla Noci literally disappeared into my friends stomach in 2 minutes. (I think he liked it.) The dish was a boneless chicken breast covered with mushrooms, walnuts, pine nuts, sherry wine and a touch of cream. It looked delicious. If I wan't allergic to nuts, I would have asked for a taste. The waiter was super friendly in that he noticed my friend inhailed his dish and we were still eating, so he offered to bring him some bread to slop up the sauce. I liked Jackson Fillmore Trattoria; however, I don't know if it tops my list of neighborhood pasta joints. The service is friendly and the price is right. My favorite part of the meal was the complimentary bruschetta for the table. I wasn't as impressed with my meal as my friends were with theirs. A final positive for the restaurant was that I made a reservation by leaving a message on their voicemail as their OpenTable.com service wasn't working properly. I quickly received a call back which was a nice personal touch by the staff. Too often restaurants don't call you back and assume you will call them again, which is just plain rude.

AMAZING

By DarrenDelivers411 |

Without a doubt, this is one of the best restaurants in San Francisco. It's been there forever and remains a place I always eat at when I'm in town!

Always Delicious!

By jilldenton |

Whether for couples or groups, we love this place. My boyfriend and I eat here almost everyone we're in the city but last time we brought a group of 10 with us and they loved it! We shared appetizers (zucchini with pecorino is my favorite) wine and entrees. Tasted so many dishes I can't remember what I ordered but they were all delicious. This place is small. There's about a dozen tables and a counter. Arrive when they open for quick seating, otherwise expect to wait ... but trust me it's well worth it!

Reunion with College friends

By Bill F |

After living away from san Francisco ever visit we try to return to our favorite restaurants. We walked in and it was as if time had not passed. My college buddy joined us along with our daughter and a friend. The menu is easy to choose form and they had some great wines to choose from. A couple of us erred the salmon that was scrumptious...surrounded by fave beans and veggies. The Shrimp pasta was well liked and the gnocchi and tortellini disease were terrific, Great service and atmosphere too.Located in Pacific Heights it’s centrally located. Do try.

A friendly 'local'.

By ge0rgiana |

Although this is not an outstanding restaurant in one sense, it is very good of its' kind. We wanted a reasonably priced, local eatery with a good atmosphere, serving tasty food and and we found it here. There were several local residents present which is always a good sign. We enjoyed our meal which was cooked in front of us by cheerful, unflustered staff.

Fantastic Italian!

By Steve H |

We booked online for 8.30 and arrived at 8.15. The place was heaving. A glass of wine helped with the 20 minute wait for a table. Once seated our starters of mushrooms and calamari soon arrived. Huge portions. Wonderful quality well presented. After a much needed rest our mains appeared. Chicken with olives/capers in white wine & spicey sausage with chicken. Best mains in 7 days of eating out in SF. Bags of flavour and quality ingredients. We were in Amalfi this time last year and didn't eat this well. 10/10 to the guys who run it.

The BEST italian food in SF

By DarrenDelivers411 |

A charming hole in the wall with amazing food. The bruschetta is so good you want to make a meal out of it. The food is particularly good when the owner, Jack, is cooking. the place is small so expect to feel squished when it's super busy. Go off hours to enjoy a little elbow room. You will love this place

Hidden Italian Food Gem in SF

By Catherine M |

I give Jackson Fillmore a 5 for everything: ambiance, value, and deliciousness! They seem somewhat hidden - if I were walking down the street and didn't know they were there, I would definitely not look in their window twice. But since I DO know they're there, all the better! The food was amazing - I highly recommend the parmesan-crusted artichoke starter, for one - and the service was very friendly. This is definitely a place I plan on coming back to next time I'm in town!

A Terrific Italian Dinner

By jaseaton |

One of our threesome, a local, guided us here without offering any hint of the special meal we were in for. We split an appetizer of zucchini with almond slivers which was unexpectedly spectacular; an order of bruschetta with tomato (divine), a plate of calimari (tasty and with a bit of crunch), and a ravioli dish with spicy tomato sauce. The staff were enthusiastic, the food exceptional, and the prices, considering, quite reasonable. If we lived here, the place would be a regular standby.

Tasty food, great atmosphere!

By Kurnalsam |

Hadn't been here for a couple of years - it's just up the street from my wife's SF office but we've been out of the country since 2012. Interesting dishes, well presented, great sauces - all in a lively, friendly scene. I had a rabbit dish which was just delicious - certainly best rabbit ever with a complex sauce and very tender, moist bunny. Others had the meatball special which was great; salads also look good. They didn't used to take reservations but you surely need them now at this very busy, smallish bistro on the ever more tony upper Fillmore St. - you'll love it!

Great food great atmosphere

By Patricia F |

From the street you would be dubious about this Italian trattoria unless it was recommended but inside it is fantastic. Service is prompt and friendly, we shared mushroom salad and then I had the most divine seafood stew brimming with mussels, pippin and small prawns with some white fish in a very flavoursome tomato base, while my husband had salmon and vegetables which he also thoroughly enjoyed. Wine could be bought by the glass or bottle and some diners even brought their own wine. Beer and cocktails also available. Highly recommended but suggest you book ahead.

Always wonderful

By Pottsy1234 |

Took some friends there - their first time at JF. We all had something a bit different but everything was delicious. We had the tiramisu for dessert & our friend said it was better than his grandmother’s. We had reservations but they were able to seat us earlier. I feel like I am a San Franciscan when I eat there!

Cozy and Tasty

A very good meal with friendly staff in a cozy setting. We enjoyed very much the carbonara and chicken with spicy sausage. If I didn’t dislike going into San Francisco so much I’d visit often.

true Italian

By 16rebecca |

I was taking a friend out to dinner for helping me with something. We asked my daughter who lives in the city where to go and we ended up at Jackson and Fillmore. The dinner was very good and it was walking distance from my daughter place. My Italian friend loved the place and we would go back.

Over rated

By Geoff S |

A neighborhood place with a loyal clientele. There are too many other Italian places to choose from to go back to this one. Service is rushed and the food mediocre at best. Wines by the glass are grodsly over priced for the actual quality and selection.

A Great Bustling Old Standby

By Shif62014 |

The first night I come to San Francisco I go to Jackson Fillmore. The place is jumping; the pasta is reliably outstanding; the wine is excellent. It is an exciting place to be.

Big fail

By Michelle H |

My husband and I were in SF for 2 days prior to a cruise. We love Italian and wanted this as one of our meals. This This place was recommended by our driver. It's a cute place and seemed clean, except when I sat down, the edge of the table was gross and sticky. When I went to wash my hands, the bathroom wasn't filthy, but it certainly wasn't on the recommended hourly bathroom check schedule. Our waiter was apathetic, almost appeared bored. Every other word was um or uh, highly annoying. We asked for wine recommendations and the response was that he didn't like wine. Thanks for sharing. We both decided on a mid range glass of pinot which was very good. We ordered the calamari to start, the breading was light, but it was way overdone. My husband likes spicy food and can handle the heat. He ordered the snapper and could barely eat much of it, he said all you could taste was the heat, compared it to eating a ghost pepper. I ordered the tortellini al forno. The mushrooms were light and fresh, but the cream sauce had a sour note to it, like it was made several days earlier and reheated. The prosciutto was almost nonexistent. Not sure if they serve desert because we never saw our waiter again, even though both our wine and water glasses had been empty for a time. Instead we had a girl slap our bill on the table wordlessly and walk away. We left in hopes of finding a place for a cappuccino and a sweet treat. Out of curiosity, I looked and found out SF has over 200 Italian restaurants. I'm guessing, but I bet at least 175 of those had better food and service than we got. Just save yourself from disappointment and go anywhere but here.

Small Italian Restaurant with Big Flavor!

By TravelingB0B |

Jackson Fillmore Trattoria is a small Italian restaurant that appears to be a neighborhood favorite. It seems to be not uncommon to have a line of people waiting outside the door, so reservations are definitely recommended. We were a group of 8 people, which almost seemed too large for a restaurant of this size. They prepared a table for us by the door, but how they prepared it really surprised me. They didn't remove the dirty linens from the previous guests which were stained with spilled wine and food, but just put white paper over the top of them. It made me wonder how many people had been using the same linens that night. We just looked at each other, shrugged our shoulders and sat down, having never seen anything like THAT before! The meal itself was excellent and so was the Chianti. We had the calamari for the appetizer and a number of different entrees. I had the Pollo alla Siciliana, as did a few others. The taste was delicious, but I found myself continually pulling small chicken bones from my mouth. A few others had the Tortellini al Forno. They said it was delicious but had a "bacon taste" which was just a little too strong. I must say that all of the servers and others who work at the Jackson Fillmore were very friendly and gave excellent service. One recommendation would be to not sit at a table by the door when the weather is cold. We discovered that the door was open for a considerable amount of time during our dinner, and we were thankful that it was a relatively pleasant night. Overall, I would definitely return to the Jackson Fillmore for another dinner, but I don't think that I would go here if we had over 6 people. They can accommodate a larger group, but it's tight.

Fantastic local Italian

By Season101 |

My brother recommended this place to me in Pacific Heights and he was right! Authentic Italian, just like my grandma used to make. We started with the mozzarella, served piping hot with gravy that tasted like the old country, and then dined on the best tortellini I’ve ever had. Well worth the visit!

A Never-Ending Perfect Experience...

By assessmenttraini2016 |

Jackson Fillmore Trattoria is our favorite Italian food experience in San Francisco. Their food is amazing their staff are perfectly skilled, and the ambiance is perfect for that private club feel for which The City is famous. Please, please, give these guys a try. They never disappoint....

Amazing

By Tasha C |

Went looking for an authentic Italian, and found it! Wonderful service, all the staff were attentive & chatty. Also made room for us! And the food! We both had the tortellini stuffed with meats, and cheese 😍😍😍 The deserts are delicious! If we were staying longer I would go back in a heartbeat

An impeccable gem and a great place to get to know

By hhhastings |

Jackson Fillmore has been a neighborhood gem for years and maintained its excellence and increased its distinctiveness versus all other choices. It's the best. The key is consistency. The recipes are proven, the preparation and execution impeccable and the atmosphere is wonderfully warming. Jack, Casey and Kelly and all the staff will greet you, chat with you, tell you the wine and food stories, help you choose, and make their place your home for the evening. If there's something that's not on the menu but they have the ingredients, they'll make it for you. The wine list has lots of low price / high value choices that are made possible because the team do all the hard work of discovery themselves, get to know the owners, winemakers and importers, and negotiate personal terms. This is a great place to get to know. Go often.

First visit here

By krazykane |

We had a great experience here for dinner. We walked here - about twelve blocks from our friend's apartment. The Italian menu had a variety of dishes. Our friend recommended to start with the Carpaccio di Zucchini which was excellent. All four of us enjoyed our entrees and the service was excellent. We finished with dessert (Tiramisu and Zabaglione Classico). Great small place off Fillmore. Would come back here.

Hidden gem

A friend took us here. It was amazing! Small, little Italian restaurant with a full bar. Great service and varied menu. Some of the best food I have had in a long time. Fresh and light fare, perfectly seasoned and plated.

Very Good Italian Food in a Local Neighborhood Restaurant

By McKD92 |

A friend who lived in San Fran introduced me to Jackson Fillmore years ago and I have gone back on most visits to the city. The Gnocchi is outstanding. They have something for everyone from pastas to fish and lamb. If you have less than adventurous members of the party, they are happy to make you spaghetti with any type of sauce even though it is not on the menu. The atmosphere is quaint and you feel like you are in a small neighborhood restaurant that has been there for decades, because it has been. It is a small space, so reservations are highly recommend.

A Hidden Treasure

By entboy2013 |

One of the best meals I've had in SF. Our friends told us of this place and we are glad they did. It is a small place with great food and service. We arrived were greeted and offered a choice of seats table or counter. We choose the counter and service was immediate. They have an excellent choice of wines by the glass and bottle selection. The appetizers came right out and were fantastic. Entrees were hot and cooked perfectly and dessert was almost too much to finish. Overall excellent service, food and a great evening. Not sure of parking situation as took uber/lyft

Wow. Just wow.

Had an amazing dinner here, every single dish was excellent. Always thought I didn't like gnocchi but now I know I do :)

Authentic, top shelf Italian; a jewel in a gem of a neighborhood

By Bob F |

I've been a coming to Jack's place for the better part of 20 years and like good wine Jackson Fillmore simply gets BETTER with time. The most authentic and delicious Italian food you'll find outside of Italy with a terrific menu replete with all sorts of choices. I love a place that offers such a breath of interesting dishes that one struggles to make a selection. This is JF. The atmosphere is lively, upbeat and energetic in this trendy, relatively small spot in the heart of Pacific Heights. A jewel in a gem of a neighborhood. Don't leave without someone in the party ordering the Contadino Misto - to die for!

Great Trattoria

By Jonathan B |

We've eaten her a couple of times when in San Francisco and it has become one of our favorites. The food is always delicious and the prices are quite reasonable. The restaurant is closed Monday and Tuesdays. The days it is open the hours are from 5:30 PM until 9:45 PM. Highly recommended if you are looking for a nice local dinner in a casual spot that is an excellent value.

great neighborhood restaurant

By Lisa O |

Unpretentious, down home cooking with a neighborhood vibe. If you have to sit at the bar, I recommend the seats at the very end, where you can peer into the kitchen. We don't live nearby, and we make a point to try to eat here anytime we are within striking distance. I love the spaghetti carbonara and my husband is a fan of the chicken saltimbocca -- haven't tried too many other dishes, but everything we've had has been very tasty :)

Great neighborhood restaurant with authentic cuisine

By TakeTheHighRoad |

One of my favorite San Francisco dining establishments. Friendly staff, good chef and authentic Italian peasant food. I have never had a bad meal or bad service here. Get to know the staff and let them order for you. Extensive wine list. This is a Pacific Heights neighborhood gem.

After 30 years still pleasant

By Lele214 |

My first time there was during college and it was one of the places a-la-mode where having dinner in a relaxing informal atmosphere. It still conserves the same spirit with good food and nice wine selection and friendly service.

Dinner with friends

By ormond42 |

I had dinner with friends who recently moved into this neighborhood and were looking for local hangouts. The Jackson Fillmore Trattoria was an absolute winner. The food was well-prepared, authentic and imaginative. The atmosphere was casual and the serving staff was friendly and welcoming. My friends discovered a gem of a hangout and I am envious of their San Francisco opportunity since there is nothing like this in Minneapolis

Excellent recommendation!

By PVilly |

We are staying in San Francisco for 3 nights at the beginning of a two week tour of the Western States and a random conversation with a lovely San Franciscan couple at London Heathrow in the departure lounge culminated in them recommending this place - thank you, thank you, thank you! The Jackson Filmore has everything we look for for a great evening and this was a truly wonderful way to end our stay in San Francisco.Atmosphere, friendly, helpful and engaging staff, excellent food and drink. All four dishes were faultless - Portobello mushroom starter, mains of pollo alla noci and chicken and sausage casserole, followed by the amazing zabaglione classico for dessert. Most of all it was just a fun place to be - eating at the bar in a restaurant is not something we are used to in the UK but with all the tables reserved this was the only option available to us - this just added to the enjoyment of the occasion as we could engage with our fellow diners and banter with the staff. Re some of the previous reviews, I would describe the restroom as untidy not unclean -I've experienced far worse and it certainly didn't warrant a 'markdown'. An unforgettable evening in an unforgettable city.

Good Old Fashioned Italian Restaurant.

By Ivor J |

Had seen good reviews of this place and the apartment owner where we stayed recommended it. Only a small restaurant and what we thought was quirky was we could take a bottle of wine outside and stand on the street having a glass whilst they got our table ready. The staff were very helpful and the food was really good. Well worth a visit.

OK, not Stellar

By travellingsherlock |

Nice ambience inside, cozy place. Next to a liquor store, adds a bit of neighborhood quaitness to the place. In lower pac heights. Food is average, not stellar. The appetizer bruschetta was dripping with olive oil. Bit much unless you are a college kid with a ferrari-like metabolism. The bathroom needs work. For the prices, they need to clean it up and make it fit with the prices. Expect to pay about $60 per person if you order a modest appetizer, a wine, and a single entree, with no dessert or coffee. Go here for the ambience. Not so much for the food.

go to place in the city for italian!

great ambiance, and food. sit at the counter and talk to the locals. we had the penne with meat sauce, and grilled tuna--amazing. Love this place.

Our first dinner in SF - Wow!

By LaurieAllan |

A quick call to the Jackson Fillmore secured our table, a good idea as they do book up quickly, even on weekdays. A short and beautiful walk though a beautiful neighborhood was also a treat. On arrival and following a friendly welcome, our server Christian guided us pleasantly through the meal with perfect recommendations. The wine, food, service (very fast) and atmosphere was so SF. A meal and experience we'll remember as a highlight of our California visit, one we hope to repeat one day.. Thank you! The South Africans

when you're here it does feel like you're family

warm welcome walking in the door. greeted with amazing aromas. they seated us at the front table overlooking the street so plenty of light and room. the server was gently moving us along as the line to get in was growing without making us feel rushed. careful introduction of the daily features. each one sounded like a festival. and the actual food was so tasty, the plates colorful, aromas inviting, and quantities generous. friendly fine service. reasonable tab. we will be back!

Still amazing 20 years later!!!

I lived in San Fran from 1996-1998 this was the first restaurant I was taken to and it became my favorite spot to take anyone who came to visit me while I lived there. I just returned to San Fran after almost 20 years! Went here for dinner the first night back and it was as good as it was then. The atmosphere is just quaint and friendly and the food is the best in the city as far as I'm concerned. I'm 100% Italian and this food is as authentic as what you get in Italy. The staff is wonderful, the wine list fantastic and the prices are great. The calamari was the best I have ever had anywhere - fresh, not heavily breaded and the dipping sauce did not overwhelm the flavor of the calamari. My favorite dish is the Tortellini Al Forno which has been on the menu since I started coming here - with mushrooms and prosciutto in a cream sauce - it is heaven on a plate. The Chicken Contadina is enough for 2 and you can't beat it. Can't say enough about this place - if you want unpretentious, great food, great wine and excellent service - try it out you won't be disappointed.

Very good food in a local, little place.

By Michael C |

A great little neighborhood Italian place. This was our first time at Jackson Fillmore and we had an early reservation and grabbed a seat at the bar for dinner. Right away greeted with a super friendly bartender, he knew his wine and had great recommendations on the menu. Very welcoming. The space is very comfortable, nothing overly designed and décor probably needs a slight refresh, but it still feels “neighborhoody” and local and casual. The food was excellent. We had the eggplant parm and meat ravioli along with the fried calamari, which tasted a little too smoked for me, but was still good. All in all, a great little place and we will absolutely make it more of a regular destination.

I hate to write a review like this

By Howard Y |

We have been coming here for a number of years and for the most part have enjoyed this neighborhood restaurant for its food, friendliness, and wine. They have only recently began to accept reservations and this is much appreciated. Hopefully tonight was an aberration but I was super disappointed. The wine list is great by the bottle or glass. We had a terrific Sicilian red with dinner. I understand that the food is casalingua style, but my $18 for a plate of tubular pasta , sausage and bland tomato sauce is no deal. A plate of heaped up potatoe, sausage, and chicken was filling, but not particularly memorable. My wife enjoyed her salmon, it had charred edged which made it more interesting and tasty The calamari was tasty, a clump of sauce-dressing gave it an extra zing. The complimentary bruschetta was nice. In order to use the restroom, you need to walkthrough the kitchen. As a former Health Inspector in another life, I got quite an eyeful. They were preparing chicken next to a dirty sink of pots and pans, the water heater was on a pretty cruddy looking wooden stand, and the overall state of sanitation and repair seemed to be lacking. The servers are for the most part, really friendly and helpful, The overall ambience is fun, sometimes too fun. It was noisier then a club tonight due to one super loud group on a Sunday night. Based on tonight’s experience and back kitchen appearance, I doubt that I would return as the choices in SF are numerous, despite my long history of patronage.

I feel let down

By Avrilx |

Heard so much about this restaurant, but it's just okay. Small size restaurant. Service was nice with friendly folks. Food is very spotty. Salad was meh. My gnocchi with shrimp was good but his pasta was not so good. Because I have been saving this place for a special occasion visit I feel kind of let down now. Only saving grace is that I enjoy the company I'm with.

I have been coming to this Restaurant for over 30 years and it is still one of my Favorites

By Colleen K |

I came to Jackson Fillmore the second night it opened its doors on the corner of Jackson and Fillmore Streets in San Francisco. I rented to entire restaurant out to hold my 30th Birthday Party here. Everyone loved it then and we still love going here. The food is authentic Italian right out of Italy. They offer a wonderful complimentary bruschetta as an appetizer and every dish I have ever tried was fantastic.

Fine food, Great Service

By Traveler1 |

Had dinner here with four friends. It was my first time, but it won't be my last. I was very pleasantly surprised by the exceptional quality of the food and by the good service. I had to drive into the city and was not optimistic about finding a parking place but had no problem finding one within a block of the restaurant - it was not a weekend which probably made the difference.

Half-Baked

By Jose F |

First of all proper covid protocols were not being followed. Secondly the pasta had dry hard edges, either from being half cooked or dried out? Either way not good. The restaurant was too small and over crowded. Very dissappointing. I had the Zuppetta di Pesce which tasted fishy, but was strangely devoid of fish. My wife's ravioli was mushy with green beans and potatoes...a strange combination. $30 pasta dishes are definitely overpriced and not worth it!

We Ate Every Bite

By Sheri G |

We loved everything we ordered. We started with the portobello mushroom, asparagus, salad, and fried mozzarella. That was devoured. We had chicken with mushrooms, penne with a meat marinara sauce, and gnocchi. We ate everything it was so good. And very friendly and accommodating waiters.

Great Trattoria in the Hood

This spot is very small. very loud, very bright, and VERY DELICIOUS. Great Italian food. Enjoy and please reserve well in advance.

Neighborly, Lively and Delicious

By Wazito |

Upon entering this small restaurant, two things become clear. The counter is stacked with locals and regulars and the music is not Italian. At least the first observation is a good sign. There is nothing fancy about anything here. The waiters/staff are friendly, but are without airs. The menu is full of hearty choices, mostly with an Italian intention, if not a purely Italian execution. The bathroom is entered through the kitchen and is, well, adequate, let's say. But, sometimes fancy isn't what you are after. The appetizers were all delicious--we tried four to share, which is a good way to go. A nice burrata, a chunk of fried mozzarella covered in a tomato based sauce, a grilled artichoke all were well received. Pasta dishes were delicious, if not entirely traditional. Portions were generous and all the desserts were happily finished. On wine, they had a great special on a nice bottle of Gavi. So have a look for similar offers, if the Gavi is sold out (which it will be soon). Just don't look for fancy. Oh, and the music. It was bluegrass the whole time we were in the place. Not too loud, but lively.

Mushy pasta and Old Prawns

By Melissa H |

If Negative scores were allowed this place world get it! Sad excuse of an itialian restaurant, the pasta tasted old and reheated (think mushy like a can of spaghetti-o's) and the prawns were kinda fishy tasting but I figured it was just me until I was in the had me in the restroom on most of the flight home. I wouldn't feed the homeless with food from here! Learning not to ask younger hotel check in clerks where a good place to eat is unless it's fast food!

Great neighborhood spot

By tim m |

Took four out of town coworkers here for a real sf place. Great pasta, wine, appetizers and dessert. Waiter looked like a biker but was friendly, great advice and a huge plus. Had not been here in 20 years and now I know why it’s still here when so many places have turned over.

Right near my apartment...

Right near my apartment. Really good Italian Restaurant. Not opened on Mondays, have made that mistake more than once. You can just tell someone loves cooking in that kitchen.

I heard so much about this place, but it's pretty standard italian.

Doesn't look like much from the outside but;

By famhand |

We went because of the reviews but when we got there were a little put off by the looks from the out side. We looked inside and it seemed like a lively, friendly place so we took a chance and went in. WOW,were we happy we did, great food and service. All the staff, the waiters, busboys, cooks were so friendly and helpful we felt right at home. The first thing they did was to serve a welcome plate of buttered bread with tomato, garlic, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, a great start. We had as an appetizer the portobello mushroom on arugula. Out of this world, don't miss it. I had the special of the day, chicken and prosciutto which I really enjoyed. Was great value for the money, Highly recommend going there

Fun Neighborhood Atmosphere

Really enjoyed our first evening's vacation here. They knew our kids were tired and got us our food quickly. The quality and diversity of the menu makes me want to return next trip.

Perfect Neighborhood Spot

By KAP |

The kind of restaurant that you wish you had in your neighborhood. Good to great food, efficient but not pretentious service, good vibe, won't break the bank, consistent. Always on my list when in the area.

Don't Let The Name Fool You!

By Shawn M |

The name of this trattoria doesn't give you a clue about what kind of genius is going on inside! This homey neighborhood ristorante was formerly a sushi restaurant - with the bar in tact - you can sit and watch salad prep and more! The food was spectacular - a freshness and authentic flavor that I have not experienced outside of Italy. I am truly amazed - every bite was delicious and the wine to pair was perfect. Be prepared for casual almost family style - every seat is coveted. You don't want to miss this place!

OK neighborhood restaurant

By MITIJ |

We were 3 couples and we had reservations. The place is small and packed. The bar was pretty full as well. By the time we were leaving (at about 9:30) they were putting tables outside the restaurant to accomodate more customers. We were seated about 10 minutes after we arrived. We ordered some appetizers for the table. The calamari was really good. Very tender and prepared nicely. I ordered a shrimp dish and it was good. My husband ordered a seafood fra diablo and he said it was OK. Everybody else enjoyed their dinner. The wine list was good, we ordered two bottles of wine and both were under 50.00. It is a VERY noisy restaurant. It seemed that it was a real neighborhood place where everyone knows eachother, which is really nice. So, there was nothing spectacular about the restaurant, but it was a OK.

Improptu dinner

By Tony D |

We rocked up with no booking they gave us a table for two and served some of the nicest meals I've eaten in a while, the seared tuna was to die for and the wine selection was spot on from the waiter.

Almost 30 years old and still great after all these years

By Bob F |

I have been a regular at Jackson Fillmore since their opening nearly 30 years ago and at the end of the day, when you're looking for a truly great, authentic trattoria one is hard pressed to find anything better in this town or any other around the world. Every appetizer and entree is delicious and ultimately satiating. Portions are generous and served piping hot. I recommend the Contadina Mista if in the mood for something very hearty, as well as the old standby, Pasta GOA. Veal Chop always great as well. GREAT ITALIAN COMFORT FOOD They DO get very busy and sometimes the staff has issues keeping that cup of coffee refilled but otherwise service quite good. I always recommend this place.

Great place, Great food

By Oscar2331 |

We ate here while vacationing in San Francisco and absolutely loved it. They bring everyone bruschetta to start the meal. I had a dish of pan roasted chicken, sausage and vegetables and it was exceptional. The pasta dishes I tasted where very good as well. It gets very busy, so I would make a reservation in advance. This restaurant will not disappoint, we loved it.

Good Food!

By Steve H |

Polly and ate dinner here on a warm evening in May. We had made a reservation and were glad to have done so...............there was quite a queue when we got there. I had a chicken and sausage casserole dish whilst Polly went for fish. Both were of excellent quality and came in large portions. The atmosphere was excellent and we were well looked after by the staff. We'd recommend to anyone!

Amazing Return Visit

By indytrims |

Jackson Fillmore is swiftly becoming one of our favorite restaurants in San Francisco. It is in the lovely Pacific Heights neighborhood. The restaurant is small and friendly. The buzz of the place is surpassed only by the amazing homemade pastas and sauces. We were greeted with a spicy and fresh slice of garlicy bruschetta. I had the most beautiful bowl of crescent shaped ravioli. This is a neighborhood gem, and a spot that is worth a tourist trip from the downtown.

Snug Trattoria

By Martysfo |

The food was good, the wine and company better. Burrata with corn, arugula and cherry tomatoes followed by Zuppe de Peche and tartufu for dessert. Great Italian wine list. We had a 2011 Barolo. Fun place.

Food Very Good, Service Not-So-Much

By elaine l |

Used to frequent this place "back in the day" so was so excited to take my new-to-San Francisco daughter there on Sunday night. Place is as popular as ever apparently because the only reservation we could get was for 5:45. When we arrived, we were seated at the counter which was fine. From then on, the experience went downhill. I can only use the word "badgering" for what the waitperson subjected us to. Not a smile, not a welcome, just wanted to know what wine we wanted. And then, she would not let us just enjoy that glass of wine without constantly pushing us to order. (We were there to "dine" not merely to "eat" and she was having none of it.) A request for details on the specials was met with a perfunctory, brusque recitation of ingredients. And then more badgering. It was apparent from the moment we sat down that the goal was to turn over our table for the next customers. We finally (maybe 20 minutes after arrival?) ordered and the food was good but the experience with our waitperson was so uncomfortable that it frankly ruined our evening. Very disappointing for a place that held wonderful memories for me.

Wonderful AGAIN !!

By calnorth1 |

Family dinner with 5. Kelly checked on me earlier in the day to verify reservation. She recognizes me and calls me by my first name. Nice touch ! Wait staff is always knowledgeable about the food and lovely wine list. Easy to have conversation with the staff and have a sense of humour. The food is great from the first to the last bite!. We have sampled most everything on the menu and have never had a bad meal. We had lots of laughs over great food accompanied by Prosecco and lovely wine. Always enjoy our experience at JF. We go about1 - 2X/year. Highly recommend JF. We will be back - for sure !!

Nah. Plenty of other options.

By George R |

Food was below average. Arrived and met a rude employee. Then got sat and given an average menu. Food was cold, and tasted like fast food Italian. Never coming here again. I’d run.

Very Bad!

By Caterina P |

We came here to have a good italian dinner, so, our american friends booked for us this restaurant. When I Saw the menù I read italian plats but cooked in the american style, with a lot of ingredients that in Italy we never use for cooking. The local was very noised! Don't come!

i'm italian, and this place is not

By ilcontemascet |

First of all, this place is filthy. I mean I almost wanted to leave the restaurtant when I walked to by the kitchen to use the restroom. I don't think this place can have an "A" rating from the health services. The food was terrible. the plates were dirty, the floor was dirty. If I could give this place a 0 star, I would. I ordered some sort of baked ravioli and this awful food arrived, I barely eat it. I paid and left, and you cannot offer me a free meal for me to come back. Not sure about the other reviews. please go and see how dirty is the kitchen and then you can tell me how the food can be any good. Only positive, I thought for sure I would be sick but luckily I wasn't.

Few locals

By localregular |

This place is not consistent. Some pastas very good, an artichoke started was not good. Wine just ok. Usually packed, but not with locals. Could it be the portions, or the prices?
