Great cheesesteaks, the guy who runs the place is from Philadelphia, so just ignore the guy on the phone who asked me "Do you want cheese on your cheesesteak?"

I travel regularly for business and stay nearby. This has been a great place to get take out from. The mushroom steak whiz + sweet peppers is amazing. Kind of a messy sandwich but the best cheesesteak I've had. To be fair, I haven't been to Philly to experience the "real deal" from Pat's or Geno's, but Jake's has been the best cheesesteak I've had. If you want a quick and affordable sandwich, and like the gooey, cheesy, greasy aspects of this treat, you won't be disappointed!

We were so hungry that night we were in a 'any place will do' type mood to eat. We found this place a few blocks away from the popular restaurants in the Marina district and were not expecting much. The diner inside is small with a few tables outside. We had to eat outside because Die Hard 4.0 (violent) was being shown inside and we had small children. Not the best view outside! Having said that the beer was really good and the cheese steak was amazing. Great tasting, wish we could get these in the UK!

Trying Phili's steaks was on our to do list in SF. We chose this one, because of good recommendations on TA and it was close to our hotel on Lombard. Was little confused what to order, but the staff was very informative and helpful. Cheesesteaks were great, but the bread was too greasy for my taste as it's dipped in fat during preparation. Square fries with cheese are perfect. OK priced for SF.

After looking for a quick bite to eat in the area, we stumbled on to Jake's. Not only were the cheesesteaks pretty good, so were the waffle fries. It isn't a large place although I'm pretty sure they have people packed in here daily. My entire family of 4 gave Jake's two thumbs up.

We were going for sushi but it was closed so ventured here as a result. Glad we did. Cold beer and amazing cheese steaks and more to accompany the great staff who are busy ensuring everyone is happy. Definitely visit again.

If you're looking for a famous Phila. cheesesteak this is the place to go when on the West Coast. While visiting San Francisco we stumbled upon Jake's Steaks just at they right time. We were hungry and looking for a place to eat at a reasonable cost close to our hotel. ( Coventry Inn ) Being from the East Coast near Philadelphia we were extremely surprised to see a cheesesteak restaurant owned by a former Philadelphia resident and sports fan. Inside the restaurant it was easy to notice where the owner's roots were from. Flags supporting the Philadelphia Eagles, long boats hanging from the ceiling and murals of boat house row made it easy for one from the East to identify. The food was fantastic, a must try is the garlic fries. If ever in San Francisco again we will definitely make it a point to stop in and enjoy one of Jake's delicious steak sandwiches.

Food was very good and the price was right. Will definitely go back!!! Only negative was the bathroom needed to cleaned.

I had the steak sandwich and it was so good! Plenty of meat too. It was one of the best sandwiches I've eaten. Fast service and nice staff. It was a sport bar kinda vibe there, but it wasn't loud the night we ate there. It's small but functional. I would eat there again for sure, but I would probably order to go. The onion rings were awesome!

My husband and I ordered Jake's Steaks through GrubHub while staying at a hotel in San Francisco last week. The menu looked appetizing, and I was very intrigued by the cheesesteak salad they offered. My husband got a regular cheesesteak and we split an order of zucchini sticks. The food itself was good, but we requested ranch dressing for the zucchini sticks and ended up with blue cheese (a very unwelcome surprise for my husband). The salad was okay, but the American cheese on top was pretty solidified and cold by the time the food was delivered. Not upset we ordered food from there, but probably wouldn't order again.

Finally an American restaurant. Not high style, but real American cuisine. The salad is a little different from Europe. A huge load of minced meat with cheese was surprisingly tasty. It also has vitamins. I had a cheese steak with mushrooms. My baguette, God knows, wasn't bad. Can you really recommend it?

Love Jake's! They get Amoroso rolls and Tastykakes shipped in from Philly... And waffle fries! Maggie and Charlie are the best. Great place to watch Phillies and Eagles games too. During Phillies games they throw out red jello shots when someone hits a homer. Eagles games, it's green jello shots. Great times, great people and great food!

I've never been to Philly to compare to the places that this sandwich originated, but Jake's is almost addictive if you love melted cheese over grilled steak on fresh flaky French bread. My favorite is the cheese steak with mushrooms, cheese whiz, and sweet peppers. The cheese whiz may sound less appealing than the other choices, but is a flavorable combination like no other. Great choice to stop into for lunch or dinner. I often order to go when in town and staying nearby. Excellent!

We live in the neighborhood and have frequented Jake's for years. Our kids have grown up here and Charley knows them. Honest WHIZ cheesesteaks (though I have never had one in Philly), great hot meaty chicken tenders, and cold beer. The final bill sometimes startles (a bit higher than I am expecting, even after all these years), but we come back regularly. If there is a sporting event you really want to watch, they will try to get it on one of the TV's (unless everyone in the place is watching ... uh, a Giants game). It's the kind of place I don't want too many people to know about because I like it as it is -- a neighborhood place.

Walked past and decided to go back and give it a try. Not local so was a little unsure. Best decision we made that day. Staff were really friendly. Had several beers and chatted at the bar before ordering food. Bacon cheesesteak to takeaway and chicken tenders. It was delicious. Had a great night finished off with superb food. Would definately go back.

And they deliver!

Absolutely yummy and large portions. The portions were so large my daughter and I shared a cheese steak comboand it was plenty. The price was right, too!

The philly cheesesteak are amazing! Not too sweet and not too salty. It was juicy and just right! Managed to grab one during an Eagles Game. That's perfection!

This is small fast food place, with sports bar like atmosphere. There are some counter seatings, a couple of LCD on the wall, that shows the latest sports games. A good place for the boys to hangout, having some beer, hot cheesesteak sandwich, and some fries. We ordered a 12 inch cheesesteak sandwich for about $ 12 dollars total. We took the sandwich down to the Marina water front, and enjoyed the beautiful golden gate bridge view, while eating the delicious lunch. The sandwich was a bit soggy, but, it was good. A good neighborhood hangout.

this is as good a steak sandwich as one would get in Philadelphia. I should know, I lived there for 25 years. They fly in their bread from Amoroso's bakery. Their sandwiches are more generous than Pats, Jim's, or Gino's.

We were staying over the road at the Coventry Motor Inn and decided to eat local... we'd walked by the day before and liked the look, but going in were surprised at how small the restaurant really was (it had maybe 6 tables, and a bar, and the kitchen itself) with a sports bars theme - the menu was just cheesesteaks, and that's it! Not necessarily a bad thing, and the food itself was really good, very tasty and very filling - sure its not that healthy, but what the heck! The only real let-down was the service.. the lady who took our order was very short with us, like we were an interruption in her day - shame, as it would have been an "Excellent" rating had the food come with a little less attitude.

If you are a Philadelphia Eagles fan and are in San Francisco during one of the Iggles games this is a must visit spot but get there early. I never eat cheesteaks outside of PA but this is a real cheesesteak with Amoroso rolls, wiz and onions. We won today so the place was awesome. Nice job Wayne, Junior, (and met Bill and Mark) Chuck Evans

This was pretty close to the hotel I was in, so I was a regular for a while. This is a great place to catch games and have a great cold beer at the same time. It's also not very crowded so you don't have to wait to get a table.

Think the food is bad. Not the taste. The taste is okay. But having pain in stomach after eating there.

If you are looking for a quick bite that's also cheap, this is a good option. We ordered two cheesesteak sandwiches, a basket of waffle fries covered in melted cheese whiz, and two giant pints of beer and our bill was 28 bucks. This was a welcome relief after reviewing the menus of other places in the area, which seemed quite expensive. There were several big TVs above the bar so we could watch two different ball games. Would definitely go back, especially during happy hour (M,W,F) for $3 for (big!) pints of beer.

typical steak sandwiches...nothing to die for.....

Found this hidden gem on TripAdvisor, place was quite but the sandwiches were perfect full of flavor and toppings. Staff treated us very well.

Have to say if you're interested in having a great night out with good food in a central location this is the place for you to go.9/10 for staff food and atmosphere

After an amazing two weeks holiday in the US on our last night we came across jakes !! Only wish we had found it sooner !! Amazing food at really reasonable prices and helpful staff , best cheesesteak sandwich I have ever had , if you are in San Fran , this place is is a must x

Cheesesteaks are really good.

Smashing grub and cold beer. Great atmosphere and service with a smile! A must visit if you are in San Francisco 😊!

I went there for dinner to watch the Clemson, Ohio State game and was blown away by the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting San Francisco or even if you live in San Francisco.

Visited Jakes Steaks for the first time and it won’t be my last. Friendly staff and great family atmosphere. The food was even better! Insane portions which definitely leaves you feeling full and that’s just the Philly Cheese Steak. Went for the Reuben and it was everything I’d hoped for. Only in San Fran for another 2 days but will 100% go again. 👍🏼

Jake's makes true Philly Cheese Steak. Fresh made, the correct bread and cold beer. We watched a play-off game at Jake's; A great time, wonderful food and beer. Jake's also does a lot of carry-out.

As the title says the cheese steak just melted in my mouth I had it with onions and mushrooms. This is seriously the best cheese steak I have ever eaten. You should def make it a place to visit. We were tired one evening and the place was recommended by the hotel staff small neighbourhood sports bar eat in take away or delivery. The garlic fries were tasted too

Ordered this one night when we got back to the hotel pretty late. Took them 5 minutes to have our to go order prepared. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Lots of good flavor. We didn't eat at the restaurant, but it was small, quaint, and clean. I would recommend this.

A friendly welcome. Ice cold beer. Delicious cheesesteaks and fries. Baseball on the TV. I was in heaven!

Fastfood not so far from marina Sandwich are good Self service you've to move to eat No wine ! Only beers are proposed Nothing special

Great Cheesesteaks. Awesome bread, perfect cheese. Simply delicious. Also, a super friendly staff. We ate there twice over a 5 night stay, and with all the nearby choices, that's really saying something!

Jakes makes the most authentic Philadelphia style cheesesteaks in SF(including the rolls). In addition to creating fantastic cheesesteaks, there are options- the chicken option is great and beef guilt-free! One of our #1 choices for pick up or delivery.

Good food and quick service. The Philly cheesesteak had a lot of steak on it! The waffle fries were good, I just needed to add more salt to them. Overall, a great meal!

Was staying in a hotel near to Jake’s and wanted something quick to eat. Found Jakes on tripadvisor (after passing it earlier in the day) and was not disappointed. $12 for a 12 inch philly cheese steak sandwich. Would definitely recommend and was ten times better than the KFC takeaway we had eaten earlier on in our trip. Would visit again when back in SF. While waiting also noticed that its possible to order for home delivery which is an added bonus.

As hard as it might be to believe, someone actually got it right!

Interesting philly cheesesteak salads available, try one you will like it! multitudes of big screen HD Televisions blaring sports. Draft Liters of beer available. small location in good safe neighborhood.

Spent the day at Levi Stadium at a football game, the out of town team. Went to Jake's Steaks for dinner and found ourselves in a Philadelphia Eagles pub watching Sunday night football. And with the best cheesesteaks outside of Philly. Small pub atmosphere with a big heart and stellar food & service.

Closest to the real thing that I have found in California. Even have the whiz option. Forget the chains.

I'm British and a Philly steak is totally alien to me and so when it came drowned in melted cheese I was rather put off. We used the one on Buchanan Street and the ambiance was very sports bar orientated and full of males but the service was excellent even if the food was not for our palates.

Philly hoagie was the best. Had to order another foot long after I ate the first one lol. The taste is so good. Recommend

Love this place! A home away from home for us past Philly dwellers. Love the mural of Boathouse Row on the back wall and the Tastykake display. The steaks are really good too!! Waiting for them to get Yuengling lager beer, but otherwise, with the Eagles or Phillies on their TV, this place is a touchdown or a home run!!!

Been here more than a couple of times and i keep forgetting to do a review on them. Maybe because i could not get enough of their Sandwich !! Their Sandwich is soooooo tasty and really generous on the portions and the price is not expensive at all if you. The place itself is nice and cozy. There's not much more to say about this place as it speaks for itself once your there.

Pretty good place for a Philly cheese stake for a good price. Definitely worth going. The staff was nice, good selection on drinks and food. Affordable prices, especially for Lombard street! Good place for small prices and authentic food.

This was the best tasting food ever there! Nice place and everyone in there is so friendly! It's a must visit place!

It was my first Cheesesteak in my first trip to America and... OH My God. I never ate something like that. The cheese was wonderful and the meat was melting in my mouth. The side dish was huge, and I'm still surprise how I ended up paying so little for all that wonderful food. They have a sign which says the best Cheesesteak, and yes, they don't lie about that.

Found Jake's by looking for places close to where we were staying in San Francisco. It is a small place that appears to do mostly take out food. The service was excellent, the original cheese steak sandwich was tasty and filling plus they had cold beer on tap! If you're hungry after a day of exploring this place hits the spot.

If you're looking for a quality cheesesteak in SF that compares to a Philadelphia experience, this is the ONLY place to come to. The steak is thinly sliced, fresh, and the rolls are shipped in to give you a real Philly experience in the shadow of the Golden Gate. They've also got waffle fries, wings, and a number of assorted items that will give you the closest meal you've had next to being at the ball park. The space is small and quite intimate, but the service staff is friendly and will attempt to make you feel at home even if it is a bit crowded. If there's a sports game on TV, it will most likely be on, and you'll be around a passionate, fun crowd. I've put this down as one of the best meals I've had in SF, and when I'm in a mood for a cheesesteak, it's truly the best place to go in San Francisco.

I stopped by here after work since it was around the corner from my hotel. I really enjoyed my sandwich. I will definitely come back if I'm every in the Fort Mason area again.

I was hungry for a taste of home. It was lunch time. I always love a great cheesesteak. I had steak cooked Philly style eggs with potatoes. Good value

Large Philly steak sandwiches, but no flavor. Was a reasonable place to eat. Has small bar and tv for sports.

My wife and I love a good cheese steak. We live 90 minutes from Philly and have experienced great ones. This place lives up to their hype. nothing fancy inside, but great food, good pricing, and nice staff

Short and sweet review really. We were staying at the Coventry Motor Inn and saw this place on Trip Advisor. Great service, amazing cheesesteaks. One word of warning, it is quite male oriented, a sort of sports bar. Don't let it put you off but don't expect to have to get dressed up for dinner if you know what I mean.

Went here and had their garlic cheesesteak sandwich with their waffle fries and also ordered their breaded mushrooms and cheese sticks and every single thing was so delicious and at a great price! Would definitely be back!

Back after walking around San Francisco all day, we called Jake's Steaks for some quick eats. We ordered chicken strips and cheese steaks and our food arrived at our hotel in about 10 minutes!! I was not expecting that nor the quality and quantity of food we received. It was all very good and plentiful. I would highly recommend Jake's Steaks for those looking for good, quick food while in San Francisco.

We went on a Monday night and although we got a seat inside it was fairly busy and had many customers coming for take out too. We had the beef Philly steaks and they were yummy and filling. We decided to share onion rings too which meant we had far too much food but they were the best I have ever tasted so was worth it! We also had a beer - I had Liberty which was a San Francisco brewed beer and it was great and refreshing. We had however just missed happy hour which I think was between 4-6pm, so the drinks were expensive but a nice treat with our tea. Staff were friendly and helpful, and you could watch 2 different sports on the screens in the bar area.

We were visiting San Francisco on the Eagles opening day, came to Jake's for an awesome game day experience!! Eagles and other Philly memorabilia on the wall, even a mural of Boathouse Row. Excellent Philly cheese steaks! So much fun! Go Eagles!!

Walked in on a Monday during Happy Hour, grabbed a seat at the bar. Ordered a local brew which was great. Quickly decided to try the pizza cheesesteak. It was awesome. Staff & customers were very friendly to the guy visit their town. Great prices & food. Really good prices on brew if you hit happy hour. Will visit them again when in the city.

This place was right around the corner from our hotel. We had a late lunch that day and later in the evening walked over and ordered some sandwiches. Took about ten minutes to prepare out food. I got the mushroom cheesesteak with whiz (cheese sauce) and onions. Delicious. Also got onion rings. My wife got a regular cheesesteak, no cheese. She wished she would have got the whiz. Not much room to dine in but there is a small bar and several TV's playing baseball while we were there. Soda comes in cans but they have beer on tap. Couldn't tell you if this was authentic cheesesteak but if it is, I gotta go to Philly. Either way, a tasty fast food joint for a quick bite.

Pouring with rain so looked close to accomodation. Pleased we came across Jake’s. Friendly welcome, quick service and plenty of Cheese Steaks to pick from. Went for the special which came with fries and a sofa. Yummy. Warmed us up quick as we tucked into so awesome tucka! Might need to go back again during our stay.

I don't remember when i first came here , but it's been over 3 years since then that i always come and get my favorite cheesesteak, i never stick with one kind of cheese, always change depending on my mood that day... they have sport schedule all day long... great place for hangover (they deliver!)

Very welcome meal on our first night in San Francisco - good value, massive portions - if you're used to UK portions, order half!!

This was a tiny little place on a side street that was so noisy and packed on a Friday night that we waited outside for our sandwich. Then we we got it back to the hotel, it really wasn't that good. It was kind of a waste of money.

We ordered cheese steaks and waffle fries delivered to our hotel room. Food arrived quickly, and exactly as ordered. Was the absolute BEST!

We found this place while walking in San Francisco through google maps when trying to find a place to eat nearby and we were just so lucky!!! The place is very small and you wont think much of it by the appearance but we were surprised to see how good the cheesesteaks were and how fast they served them!!! I was not finished putting away my credit card and the order was ready, and I saw the cook prepare them right there! We were four and asked for two large cheeseteaks to share and also cheese sticks with marinara sauce, everything very good and at a very good price. They also had free wifi.

I was born & raised in the Philadelphia area and have travelled quite a bit. From Europe to Tahiti to Bali to driving across the United States. With that said, I have tried a lot of cheesesteaks and without a doubt Jake's is the best cheesesteak I have had outside of Philadelphia. Jake's actually would beat a lot of the Philadelphia places too. They're up there with Jim's Steaks and much better than Geno's and Pat's. If your in SF, go to Jake's. Amoroso Rolls, Tastykakes, Cheez whiz.

Small, neighborhood fast food sports bar located off Lombard Street on Buchanan Street. Atmosphere a bit sterile but the beers are large and give value. Cheesesteak, ($7.20 small, $9.45 large), a bit overcooked, waffle fries were good. Locals, especially Philly fans, provide knowledgeable sports acumen, Restroom was clean. An ok place.

the best Philly cheese steak sandwich I had ever had!!!! great service and it was really close to our hotel, we were so lucky!!!!!

Steak sandwiches are absolutely wonderful. Staff very friendly. Prices great. Side dishes varied and great. They will deliver. Small eat-in area.

So many of these reviews have to be fake because this place is very average. Mediocre Philly cheesesteak $12 plus another dollar tax plus they charge you $.75 for peppers. The whole thing is crazy.. when they first opened the owner was from Philadelphia and they had good Philly cheesesteak but five owners later it just isn’t that good and very expensive.

Called in with my boyfriend while visiting San Francusco. I had the best veggie burger i have ever had, absolutely epic. I would recommend it to meat eaters and non meat eaters alike. We also order the Philly steak with mushrooms and cheesey fries, both also incredibly good. Really worth swinging buy for a beer and some food, service is quick and the staff friendly.

I went there because I was hungry and thought it would be bland and chewy but I took a bite and it was awesome.

My husband and I have been to Jake's twice to watch the Eagles while on vacation in San Fran. On both occasions we were surrounded by others from the East coast, some of who live in San Fran and others who were visiting. Everyone is friendly and it's a great place to go. A must if watching a game! Food is good too.

Fantastic steak sandwiches well filled and great waffle fries. Order a basket instead of individually and share. They also have happy hour with oversized pints at undersized prices.

If you want great food, friendly service, in a relaxed atmosphere that isn't the least bit "stuffy", then hit Jakes and thank me later. Just plan on exercising after eating all that great food... hey it's all protein anyway right?!
Not real Philly, but...
I miss Philly cheesesteaks. This is the closest I've found to what I remember. Sure, it's not as good, but it's good.
