Classy place with interesting food for grownups!!

By dgnagle4 |

Manayunk is a great place to stroll, window shop, people watch, have a bite here or a drink there....but if you plan to have a nice meal, go to Jake's (now Jake's and Cooper's). It's a classy, sophisticated place with an interesting menu and professional service. We had the raw oyster app (a special) and a bowl of olives (a mixture of sizes and colors, very nice). One person had pepperoni pizza, very good, fresh taste. One had the hanger steak (excellent with a nice sauce) with a side of the brussels sprouts with maple bacon. The sprouts were all chopped up and tremendous. The third person had the $30 deal - a salad (warm mushroom/arugula over goat cheese polenta -- WOW), an entree (short rib and lobster pierogis) and a dessert (honey cake). All good. So was the red velvet cake. We each had a half carafe -- the "cheap white" (a nice Viognier), the "cheap red" and the red zin. This place knows what it's doing and stands out in the crowd.

Lost its glamour

Having eaten at Jakes for many many years, I was beyond disappointed this evening when I had one of the worst meals that I have had in years. I started with the escargot which were cold chewy and lacked any flavor. I then had a salad that was just ok. Dessert was good but not good enough to change my mind. Jakes used to be the best restaurant in Manayunk. What Happened?

Phoenix Rises From the Flood

By Harvey N |

After a disastrous city caused flood that forced the restaurant to close for 4 months, Jakes has returned to its satisfying self. A neighborhood gem, Bruce Cooper’s staff, food and fair priced wines makes coming here a steady treat. For those who dare, the calves liver, bacon and onions is a special treat.

Outstanding food and atmosphere

Terrific dinner for college grad celebration. Wonderful apps, entrees, service. One of Manayunk’s best restaurants

Great Find

By jbbriefel |

A pleasant outdoor and dog friendly place. Crab cakes were excellent, and many other dishes as well. Very congenial staff, great people watching.

Very Disappointed

By rosannemistretta |

We were so disappointed with our experience Friday night. We have been going to Jake's for years and were so surprised to have an unpleasant experience. We took our daughter-in-law for her birthday (6 of us), and the table we got was nice, but the service was terrible. It was a three hour dinner, not because we lingered, but because the service was so slow. Were they deliberately ignoring us, or was it just that bad all around? Can't be sure. The food was OK, not the Jake's food of past experiences. The ice cream was actually bad, freezer burned. When you're paying that kind of money, you want to have it be good, if not excellent. Very disappointing!

Unique, unusual dishes!

By AdrieneC |

First time I'd been back to Manyunk in a while and I meet a friend here for lunch. The services was really good. The food was good, but unusual. I'd just warn that you won't find many standard dishes on the menu - they all have a bit of a twist, but if that is what you like, this place is prefect!

Great food, great price

By fred b |

We've eaten here many times and enjoyed everything we've had. It is a short walk from the Hampton Inn Center City and is open late.

Still great after all these years!

By vesperPhiladelphia |

Went back to Jake's this weekend after over a decade and the place still has it-- creatively prepared fresh food, a nice selection of wine, great ambiance and friendly servers. Won't wait another 10 years to go back!

Awesome place in Manayunk, PA. "Jakes and Coopers"

By CCNorthCarolina |

Went with friends, had a reservation and was promptly seated on. Sat. Night. We decided to go the small plate route. We started with drinks and apps. The mango margarita was delish! The shrimp app was perfect as a starter. The 4 Cheeseboard was really good. It was paired with 4 different spreads. The others at the table had oysters and they really liked them. Next, I had the meatballs. Very ample serving and tasty. One friend had the tuna tartar and it was good. Another had the crab cake and was VERy disappointed after all the rave reviews. It was very dry and a very small serving. For the price charged ($15) we were all so disappointed. The small salads were adequate. We shared one dessert, just ok. We absolutely would go again for a second chance. Parking was a challenge, ended up with valet. They validate and it was only $5+. Service was very good.

Excellent Manayunk restaurant

By MassCouple2 |

Jake's restaurant (and the adjoining Cooper's wine bar, apparently under the same ownership) is a great place for dinner on Main Street in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia. Good food, good wine selection, and nice atmosphere make for a good relaxing meal. The service was okay, but not as prompt as we might have liked. The salads were excellent, as were the crab cake and gnocchi (melt in your mouth!) dinners, and the profiteroles were a great dessert to end the meal. There is street parking on Main Street, but a short walk down the street is a Parkway parking lot on Levering Street, which is very convenient and you can park for $8 all evening (pay at the machine with a credit card and leave the receipt on the dashboard). Much easier than dealing with traffic and parking issues downtown.

Rock Solid Place

Great place - great menu ! Had the calamari & grilled octopus Salid Both great . Duck confit spring rolls ! Defiantly coming back here ! In downtown Manayunk .

Good Brunch Good Service

By dclang |

We went there for Sunday Brunch with family. The waitress was very pleasant and helpful. Service was very good and not too hurried. Food was also very good. Build your own omelets were perfectly done. Potato sides were a bit oily. Bacon was crisp and tasty. French toast was good but they only gave you four half slices for $9.00. Overall a very good place for brunch.

Expensive and average food

By Dennis C |

as we are staying out of Phili we got this place as a recommendation for dinner. Now i like my wine and thought Hey "Wine Bar" got to be good!! Well it was the worst wine list i had seen in a long time and the food was O/K but it was really expensive "Over rated"

Superb service and food!

By AttyCSB |

First time for us to have dinner (we’ve done happy hour at bar before). Amazing! We started with the lobster bisque and portobello mushroom soup then shared the escargot. For mains we had the lamb shank and the duck l’orange. Lastly we shared the ice cream sampler. Everything was delicious! The service was impeccable as well. For very reasonable prices we got 5 star dining service! Love that their wine list has a wide range of prices to accommodate everyone’s budget. Will definitely be back!

Best in Manayunk

By mccarthys5 |

I was at Jake's for lunch yesterday with a friend and the food was stellar. Barbequed salmon was excellent, melt-in-your-mouth quality, served with perfectly cooked/seasoned green beans and fried yams. Nice presentation as well. My friend had the crab cake entree and finished every bite, citing complete satisfaction. Portion-size was perfect - not huge and overwhelming, but not small - just enough for a nice lunch out. We did have dessert as well - the blackberry cake with chai tea ice cream was SO good - and my friend's apple pie accompained with homemade vanilla ice cream looked delicious as well and she didn't leave a single bite on her plate, so that is postive testimony as well! Coffee was excellent as well. The service was efficient and unobtrusive. Nice jazz music playing the in background. The restaurant was mostly empty, but this was a late lunch (1:30 pm) on a Tuesday - maybe about 5 other tables were occupied. I've been there for dinner and it gets packed. This was nice and relaxing. It's not cheap (bill was $70 for the two of us for lunch with tax and tip) - 2 entrees, 2 ice teas, 2 desserts and 2 coffees - but you get what you pay for and this was so VERY good. I think it's the best restaurant on Main Street in Manayunk. It's been since the revitalization of Manayunk back in the early 90's, and with good reason. There is a parking lot about a block away that is very reasonable ($4.50 for up to three hours.) We were there for two and really enjoyed our afternoon!

Pricey but wonderful

By gretel5555 |

I went to Jake's for the first time this past weekend. It was incredible! The waitstaff was attentive but not intrusive, the decor simple but interesting. I had the pheasant stuffed morels...absolutely lucious and rich. For a main course I had the sea scallops with a pea risotto...amazing. The risotto was cooked perfectly and the sea scallops were sweet and fresh. Dessert was a glass of port and a cheese plate...scrumptious blue cheese with a berry compote and a delectable cheddar. Wonderful food...but be prepared to spend 75 to 100 per person if you get drinks.

One Of The Best Happy Hours In The Yunk

By PhillyShaney |

Jake's & Cooper continues to be one of my favorite restaurants to dine at in Manayunk! The Happy Hour From 4:30p-6:30p is still a great deal with: $5 house wines and selected cocktails and $3 select beers is wonderful! The food specials are priced $5-$10! I appreciate the consistency with the full dinner menu items -the spicy meatballs; jumbo lump crab cake & pizzas still hit it out of the park every time! The wine choices are always pleasing as well. Look out during the holidays for the 50% of gift certificates-I usually stock up and use them throughout the year!

Surprise!

By Joseph K |

The food was decent abd the staff frendly. The part where they include a twenty percent tip as part of the bill is a situation I've NEVER seen before. If this gonning to be part of the bill then the prices on the menu are twenty percent lower then the actual price and an honest place would correct that.

Can’t stop thinking about it

By Jennifer H |

They have something for everyone with their food menu. Salad, pasta, pizza. I had the rigatoni with shrimp asparagus and feta. My friend had the mushroom pizza. They had so many good choices it was hard to decide. I can’t wait to go back and try something else on the menu. My friends have been there before and had the Lisa’s pizza. The atmosphere is so good and of course the wine

Good food and atmosphere

By Jed3 |

Jake's has always been a favorite for us when we go to Manayunk. Four of us went there recently for dinner. The room was attractive and reasonable quiet, since it was about half full on a Sunday night. All of the dishes, salad, pizza, crab cakes, etc. were good to excellent. The menu was lacking a vegetarian choice. The waitress was knowledgeable of the menu, wines and beers. However, our entrees were brought out while one person was still eating his salad. We were able to sit and talk for a long time after finishing, There is a small parking lot nearby if you are not able to get a spot on the street, which is usually the case.

Jake & Cooper's Wine bar, Manyunk, PA

By Cathy M |

Fabulous atmosphere. Somewhat noisy but only because it is a great meeting spot. Dining area less noisy than bar. Service is attentive. Food was very good to excellent. Wine excellent! We are wine lovers but not connoisseurs and enjoyed red and white wines that were quite good. Would definitely go back. Parking is difficult to impossible. We did the $10 valet which was actually a good value for the area. If you want Manyunk, this is definitely a good option.

Great Food, Great Service

By RYYS |

We've visited three times over the past three months and have had very positive experiences every time, first for happy hour, then Sunday brunch, then Sunday dinner. They offer some of the best crab cakes I've had (including those in Baltimore & Seattle) and service was very attentive and focused each time. Everything seafood we've tried has been great. The brunch burger was one of their weaker offerings, and I would definitely skip it. Overall this is one of the best restaurants in Manayunk. Strongly recommend.

Return visit...not disappointed but confusing web site

By saucon |

If you are searching on the web for a great restaurant in lovely Manayunk do not be put off by the fact that Jake's restaurant comes up as a wine bar.......Jake's restaurant is next to Cooper's wine bar....same management, same food , different atmosphere. We knew the restaurant 7 years ago when it was just Jake's and wanted to return. having found it listed as a wine bar we nearly didn't go having concluded that it had been transformed into a wine bar...HOWEVER we found ourselves there and were pleasantly surprised to find the same restaurant redecorated very attractively with a great menu. Our meal was delicious and the service excellent. Food beautifully presented and the portions just right. If however you are looking for wine bar atmosphere plus excellent food then next door Cooper's is the place to be.

Casually Elegant

By Jim A |

Always good, never disappoints, year after year. Prices are reasonable for the quality - not cheap but fair.

Best restaurant in Manayunk

By icecream79 |

We have been to this restaurant many times and it never disappointed, but the most recent meal impressed us even more. Everything was great - the pizza, the beets appetizer, the entrees and the desserts. It wasn't just good - it was sofisticated, beautifully served and delicious. It was surprising to find this quality during a weekday lunch. The "cheap house wine bottle" for 20 bucks - turned out to be very good, and made a very worthy deal. When we compare this place to neighboring Mainline restaurant scene - there is nothing that can beat this value. Jake's just became my favorite spot in the area.

Good food, outstanding service.

By DGS-Verona |

We enjoyed a very pleasant evening at Jake's. Started with an outstanding English Mojito. The waitress was very competent and attentive, yet never let us feel rushed. Food was delicious. Started with duck spring roles - dee-lightful. Our entrees were a rack of lamb special over risotto with portabello mushrooms and a demiglaze and the other was their crab cake. Both were very good. Menu selections were limited. It is a nice place to take someone special for a comfortable, elegant dinner and you will not feel rushed.

Great crab cakes

By Lynda W |

It's a while since our last visit but we enjoyed it just as much. We mentioned to our friends that we live Americn crab cakes and they immediately responded by saying that we must go to Jakes. So, off we went Manayunk to Jake's for lunch and crab cakes and we were not disappointed. A good time was had by all at a fair pr ice as we chose from the very reasonably priced lunch menu.

Saturday Evening Dinner

By Thomas M |

My wife and I enjoyed a dinner of hamburger and pizza on Saturday. The hamburger was cooked to perfect and the beef used was excellent. The parmesan cheese french fries delicious. The pizza was also a standout because of the blending of the cheeses. Service was attentive, but not intrusive.

Three choices of where to sit - excellent food

By valeri |

Cool drinks, excellent fish / salmon and hanger steak and fresh vegetarian mushroom soup - were enjoyed by all of us. The restaurant has 2 rooms and outside seating . One room has the bar and the other room was outfitted like a wine library and is nicely appointed

My go-to place in Manayunk for pizza and martinis, or something fancier like salmon or steak

By Fran G |

I love this restaurant! It is always so consistent. Everything is excellent and tastes the same each time you order it. Staff is pleasant and wonderful - available and yet, not intrusive. Bruce Cooper always has new things/ seasonal things, yet keeps all of his oldies, but goodies on the menu. I have never had a meal here that wasn't outstanding and have been here many times for lunch and dinner.

great birthday dinner

By chefshep33 |

Very good dinner with our family, stuffed quail, crab cakes, mussels, pizza and snacks. The service was very attentive and friendly. Also had drinks at the bar, the Hoppus I ordered was presented properly and poured the same. I love when the little things are done right.

Well! I love their coffee

Not recommended...

By adrianavramescu1994 |

The good, the bad, and the ugly. Good: The chef definitely cares about the presentation of his food and the staff was friendly with a big, fake smile. Bad: Food portions were very small and definitely overpriced for their size. To be full, you have to order at least two-three items and then things get very pricey. The front High tables were very poorly lit. Ugly: Overheard the managers (they were dressed very professionally, not in the brown shirts all the waitstaff was wearing) taking in a negative way about a few servers. Sounds like you should do that in your office, not in front of a packed restaurant and hope nobody overhears you. Very Ugly: The owner, who was bragging to a table of his friends, was drinking wine with that table for a while. Once the left, I overheard the waitress say that they didn't even leave her a tip... come on, now. That's unacceptable! Then, the so called owner proceeded to be rude with another server. That's a big no-no for me. I don't help rude owners who treat their staff like they count make money and grow their business. Last time i checked, they are the face of your business. This scumbag won't see my money again

Call It What You Will -- It's Very Good

By jerseygolf |

There is confusion over the name of this Manayunk/Philly eatery -- the menu states its name as: "Jake's and Cooper's Wine Bar," -- but there is no confusion of the quality of the fare. Pleasant Main Street location with large fresh-air view on the day we visited, nice wine list and extensive beer selection, efficient service, very good food. Can run to the expensive side of town but worth it in our estimation. Grilled octopus salad was pretty much perfect and everything else real good.

Pleasant surprise

By RingoPisco12 |

We stopped in Manayunk on our way out of downtown Philadelphia, and were pleasantly surprised by the great experience we had at Jake's Restaurant (we sat on the quiet side away from the bar). It was recommended to us by a shop owner across the street, and we ended up having one of the best meals during our week long visit to Pennsylvania (and we ate at other highly recommended places based on TripAdvisor reviews). The staff was friendly, our meals were delicious, we were able to people watch through the large windows facing the street. Plus, the special dessert of coconut cream pie was killer good.... we are thinking of driving back from Ohio just to have another meal!

Sophisticated Menu, Artfully Prepared and Presented, Perfect Celebration!

By DesertInnKeeper |

Our party of 12 was celebrating a college graduation, and this was a great place to do it. Busy urban setting made for a lively atmosphere. Great menu offering many choices, from appetizers, cheese plates, tapas plates, pizza, salads, and full entrees. I think we tried everything! I thoroughly enjoyed portobello soup with truffle oil, the amazing beet salad, and the "small plate" crab cake, which was perfectly prepared and delectable. Nice wine list. Polished off a piece of the scrumptious coconut cream pie, astonishingly good. Had a great time wishing our special graduate the best. Server Andrew had his hands full with us and several other tables, and there were a few lapses, but we were very happy and would love to go back.

Excellent place for a relaxing drink or dinner.

By ChristinePark |

Jake and Cooper's has an attractive dining room and also a nice wine bar. Large windows open on Manayunk's Main Street, so it's great for people watching. The food is excellent, and the small plates make a nice alternative to a full meal.

Prompt Service & Attentive Staff

By PhillyShaney |

I have been to Jake's in the past. I came back with friends for Manuyunk Restaurant Week. I arrived earlier than my friends, so I sat at the bar & it was Happy Hour...so I inquired about specials & glad that I did!! Wines are $5 & they had great picks. Once my friends arrived..we were seated & the service was attentive. I ordered the Spicy Meatballs & Parmaseañ Fries...Both Delicious!! My friends enjoyed the Pre-Fix Menu item. I will be back for sure.

Back and as Good As Ever!!

By Richard S |

Always reliable; an excellent choice in Manayunk. There are two separate and unequal parts, I guess one is Cooper's and one is Jake's? But the menu is the same in both venues. Cooper's is a bar/bistro and very accommodating and cheerful. Jake's is a more formal restaurant but not in the least bit stuffy---very casual. I like both very much and choose Jake's most of the time because we find in more comfortable. Highly recommend both. I have been coming here regularly for at least 25 years. Thankfully their flood and subsequent reconstruction didn't change their excellence!!

Fun atmosphere and well presented food.

By Beth B |

The atmosphere was fun with great artwork on the walls. I had the beet salad which not only tasted great but was also plated beautifully. The crab cakes came with a lovely sauce and were very generous.

Unappreciative Experiences and Mediocre Food

By Mel M |

Food is just average but they charge a lot for what you are getting. Very small portions, very high prices. The owner is as rude as can be and he teaches by example. It seems like the waitstaff is intimidated by him, as he is uncomfortably walking around the dining room, checking on his staff. Also, the owners, while charging high prices, are very cheap when it comes to the portion size, quality and overall attention to the customers. I have spent a lot of money here, but no more. It is not the staff's fault, they are nice, but seem to be intimidated by the owners and their obvious arrogant attitudes. They do NOT appreciate their customers. Plenty of restaurants nearby will treat you with respect and appreciate your business. NOT Jake's and Cooper's. They act like they are doing you a favor by letting you walk through the door. Really obnoxious and phony.

Fine Day in the Sun

By TommyBoy94 |

Splendid time sitting outdoors in the sunshine enjoying a near-perfect Sauvignon Blanc. Food looked good too, with a variety of simple but attractive menu choices including Pizzas and more traditional tavern and brunch items. Indoors, Mediterranean hues and wood gave a relaxed, homey feeling and outdoors it was a fine afternoon to watch Manayunk stroll by. This hilly, Philly once industrial neighborhood has gentrified over the years, but the Industrial brick facades and traces of factory life inside still create a unique neighborhood atmosphere. The wine bar is dog friendly at outside tables and a diminutive Boston Terrier at the next table brought smiles to passersby all around. No trace of bad service mentioned by someone out here. I guess anyone can have a bad day. I'd personally rate this place higher than the numbers say so far. Wine was expensive at $10 for a small carafe (slightly over a glass) and prices for other wines ranged even higher, but what is not expensive over there?

Tasty Wines and Lunch, Gluten Free Friendly

By bagnato1 |

On our first visit to this funky, fun neighborhood, we walked by this restaurant at lunch time and ducked in. Glad we did. They're interesting menu could easily accommodate my gluten-free wife. We both went with salads. She had the Tuna Nicoise, with some of the freshest, most perfectly seared tuna I have tasted in a long time. I couldn't resist choosing the Grilled Octopus salad. The seafood there was slightly on the rubbery side. But it had a nice char. And the greens on both of our salads were farm-fresh, with dressings that displayed a light, subtle touch in the kitchen. Oh, yes, the wines. We both had light summer whites and they were delicious, although the 6 oz. pours for the price are a tad stingy.

Good Food, Solid Service

By Rosalind M |

You won't be disappointed with the food, the drinks and the service. We had a larger group and we were served with patience and solid service. I don't know who Lisa is, but her pizza is delicious! The portions were generous, without being gratuitous. They even adapted the menu a bit to satisfy the younger members of our group. If you're in Manayunk, stop in and enjoy!

NOT the same

By Kathryn |

My salad was literally 1/2 the size that it used to be. The bread was hard as a rock, the waitress was rude and dismissive. I had not been since before March 2020 and will not return anytime soon! EXTREMELY disappointed!

Always excellent

By jim s |

The reviews are all very favorable (save one stick in the mud) and we would add ours as well. We have eaten here(both sides-Jake's and Cooper's) numerous time over last 5 years and it always delivers excellent food with great service. Many of the dishes are inventive. Can't go wrong.

Terrible service

By Antoaneta B |

Slow, unprofessional, rude service. Hostesses have no clue how to do their jobs. Management should be ashamed. Would never recommend this place and would never come back.

Superb Food and Service to a Group Tour

By Robert N |

Our group of ten dined for dinner at Jake’s & Cooper’s on November 17. Manager Maureen Zimmerman prepared a simplified yet comprehensive menu of appetizers, entrees and desserts so we could get in and out in our tight two-hour timeframe. Server Audra was most patient with our many changes in guest count until the final hour and then getting us through dinner as a group in two hours despite the restaurant being totally full. The entire discerning group of diners sung the praises of all dishes served. Appetizers ordered included the great portabella soup, shrimp dumplings and a fancy vegetable and fruit salad called Red Leaf. Needless to say the wine was outstanding and modestly priced given that this is a wine bar restaurant (by the glass, carafe or bottle all possible). Entrees selected included the outstanding 12-hour ribs in a fine sauce surrounded by green beans and carrots (me), carmelized salmon, crab cakes and grilled vegetables (for a gluten intolerant person). This restaurant is a must visit for anyone going to the charming old mill neighborhood of Manayunk in Philadelphia!

A gem of a restaurant

By Lester A |

This is a great place for dinner (reservations suggested). The menu is varied. Steak was great. Hamburger (a double) was delicious. Salmon was cooked pefectly. Parmesan fries top off a meal wonderfully

TERRIBLE

By Alexandra B |

Terrible, slow and extremely rude service! First the hostess had NO idea what they were doing. We were not greeted by the waiter after we sat at the table for 20 mins. He finally came and seemed extremely out of it. It then took an extremely long time for our food to come even though the family who sat at the table next to us came later and got their food immediately. Will never recommend! Extremely rude. Terrible terrible service.

Very good choice

By Johnsotr |

It was very busy on a Friday night. Service was very good and the food was good, but not great. Manyunk is a happening place with lots of bars and restaurants. Parking nearby is a problem. We enjoyed the crabcakes and noted that there are not many gluten free options.

Highly over priced and over rated!!

By jazzy17 |

Over priced and over rated. Had 'dinner' with 2 other friends there today 4/18/15 around 5:15.....our first time there. Service was horrible, mojitos in small cups 10.00 each, waited for our food for 45 min, no bread, ridiculously small food portions for 3 grown men....left there and stopped elsewhere since we were still hungry. We expressed our concerns to the manager and came back with a 'salad' which contained a slab of lettuce and tomato on a huge plate. REALLY??? Server was the worst I have encountered in years; not friendly at all, never came back to check up on our food once served. Just moved into the area.....will never eat or drink there again. Suggestion....many other choices on Main Street!!! Would never recommend coopers to friends or visit that establishment ever again.
