Horrible disgrace

By Stephanie M |

Being Jamaican and being new to San Antonio, I was desperately searching for home cooked food and didn’t feel like cooking myself this time around. Sadly there is only about two to three Jamaican restaurants in San Antonio, much different from where I was previously. Found Jamaica Jamaica online and had my husband pick up some curry chicken with rice and peas and plantains. Was disappointed upon the first bite. First, the curry chicken is SUPER salty and the gravy is minimal and chunky . Frankly disgusting. The rice and peas were bland, somewhat hard , and looks like whoever made the food in general tried too hard to throw black pepper in it to make it “look seasoned” when it’s still nasty. Then , there was NO plantain in my plate nor my husbands. When we called the store, the person we spoke to claimed to be the owner and claimed they looked at a video and plantains were placed . But literally there were NONE in our plates - why would we lie about a few pieces of ripe banana? Then she rudely simply stated if we weren’t happy we don’t have to come back and the conversation ended. This place is a disgrace to Jamaican cuisine . And I had something as simple as curry chicken- imagine if we asked for jerk chicken or oxtail. Maybe they have the local population fooled but literally would never recommend this place to anyone else with my last breath.

The only thing missing was the beach

Dropped in here for dinner. Very quaint. The wife ordered jerk chicken (more traditional) and I ordered stove top jerk chicken. It was absolutely delicious... Served with rice and peas, cabbage and plaintains. Our service was great and the owner, Angello came out to chat a spell...turns out, we've been through his hometown in Jamaica. If you want authentic Jamaican food in San Antonio, this is the place to go. If you have been to Jamaica, it'll make you want to go back.

Jerk Chicken and More!

By Henddoo |

Wow, I have to say, the Jerk Chicken Plate here is the best I have ever had. I was invited by a good friend and I thank him for it. I plan to go back as soon as I can. The food is very good and the price is even better. The people are friendly and professional and it feels like home.

Authentic, Excellent, Friendly

Gave it 5 stars only because I can give it 6 ! I lived in Jamaica for a few years and the food here was spot on. The jerk chicken tasted as though it were fresh out of Boston bay and wait staff was super friendly. Will be back next time I am on town. Only advice I would give is try a kola champagne. It's my favorite Jamaican soda

Really good jerk

Since I am from Jamaica I am leery of Jamaican restaurants and I know it’s usually a wait so we visited late afternoon for lunch. The Rasta pasta with shrimp was spicy and delicious though I would recommend they prepare it with the tail off. My daughter had the jerk chicken which was very good even though the rice and peas were prepared slightly different than the norm it was also good. Chicken and beat patties also very good. Restaurant was dimly lit which gave it more of a nightclub vibe with reggae playing. It’s located in a strip center outside the downtown of San Antonio.

Delicious Jamaican Food

By Tnezz |

So this was my first time eating Jamaican food so I’m not able to compare it. I will say that the food was good, the atmosphere was chill and clean, and the staff were very friendly. I will say I would like to return and try another dish, hope that helps....

I've experienced better

By TravelingLady86 |

I was really looking forward to eating here, but unfortunately my experience wasn't all that grand. I ordered the jerk tofu for myself and the jerk and curry chicken for my boyfriend (which he really enjoyed). Mine on the other hand, was lackluster. There was some spice, but missing a lot of the good flavor I was hoping to enjoy in typical jerk seasoning (there is this restaurant in Tempe, AZ which offers killer jerk and curry tofu, so I'm not way out in left field with this meat-less type of flavor profile). I will say, the cabbage was tasty and the plantains were excellent, but the rest of the experience also gave it the low rating. So, when I stopped in tonight for a pick-up the cook in the back had an argument with someone else and he decided to walk out as I had come to find out from the waiter. I then had to wait another twenty minutes for another employee to prepare the food, plus they ran out of red beans and rice so we had to settle for white rice. The guy at the counter was very pleasant and apologetic, and I didn't expect it, but it would have been nice gesture to have been offered a free dessert or discount to the bill.

It is OK...for Texas

This restaurant was okay. I ordered Ackee & Saltfish. I was so very upset that they did not offer boiled green banana or dumplin'!!! The gentleman stated I needed to call the day before. I don't know why thought. The cook at this location is NOT Jamaican, but is does okay. The rice & peas were NOT good either. They tasted like someone had been scrubbing the pot with a metal spoon as the rice & peas had a metallic taste to them. By the way, they didn't even cook white rice to substitute. One other thing that bothered me was the register. They don't show you the breakdown of cost versus taxes AND they suggest tips starting at 18%. I think this is a bit bold given they don't offer 'complete' meals (as you have to take what is available). This Jamaican girl will pass.

The jerk chicken is amazing

By Jennifer H |

One of our neighbors just discovered this place and several of us decided to check it out. The vegetarians were thrilled to find the jerk tofu on the menu. The meat eaters stuck with the jerk chicken which was recommended by our waiter as the "best" of the menu selection. The kids had a variety of items- stewed chicken, pork, the bread. All good things and all items were devoured. It's a hole in the wall but well worth seeking it out.

Authentic!

We travel ot Jamaica often and are big fans of the culture and food. Jamaica Jamaica reminds me of my 2nd home. The servings are sometimes inconsistant, but the flavor is always on point.

This is the real deal!

By Bobby Y |

I have had eaten jamican food since the late seventies and this place is the real deal. Though I have been here several times, I can seem to pry myself from eating anything other than the Jerk Chicken. Not because the other food is not good, but rather because the Jerk Chicken is about as good as I have ever had. By stealing off of friend's plates, I have tasted their Brisket, Curry Chicken, and oxtail, all excellent. One warning, their hot sauce is real hot sauce, made with habaneros peppers. Last thing, don't forget to sign the wall before you leave.

First, this location has moved. It's now in the shopping center across the street. With that, the space is also bigger-- much bigger. And, there's a bar now! Okay, on to the food. I have been here twice in the last couple of days and I've gotten the same thing both times (I'll get something different the next time). I had rice & peas, cabbage, and plantains. All three were delicious! Of the three, my favorite was the cabbage, which I don't even really eat. The rice & peas were on point and I what I was most looking forward to today, despite my previous comment. lol Plantains are just icing on the cake for me. While I was there, another customer said oxtails were his thing and he was specifically ordering it to compare with oxtails he's used to eating. Once he was done, he told the owner that he really liked it and as he was on his way out, he said a couple of times that he would be back. I thought to myself, I will be back too. I need some more rice & peas in my life. lol All of the other customers ordered dishes with meat. Since I don't eat meat, I always look at meat eaters' food, just to see how appetizing it looks. The few dishes I was able to see, looked really good. Not sure what anyone else ordered though besides the one guy that ordered oxtails.

We drove about 11 miles to come here and Everything on the menu that we tried was delicious. The curry chicken was hands down the BEST I’ve had in a very very long time. (Outside of Jamaica of course). Our server was very thorough and attentive to our table. If your wanting fast food, this place isn’t for you. Good food takes time to cook so don’t worry... Soon come. If you want some authentic Jamaican food then this is the place for you.

No Worries Here Mon

WOW, I ordered the Appleton Rum brisket and feel in LOVE. Not a white table cloth dining experience but I felt and tasted the care applied to the cooking process. I will retun again for the OX tails.

Best Jamaican food in San Antonio

By Nyan R |

I had the pleasure of visiting Jamaica Jamaica restaurant on the 23rd of August 2014 and was blown away by the deliciousness of their food. I would rate them 10 stars If I could. I tried the Salmon as I always do when I visit a new restaurant and I can truly say that this is one of the best Salmon I've had at any restaurant. The drinks were amazing, the veggie patties were super and the vibe inside was irie. Definitely a must visit while in San Antonio.

Great Lunch

Great lunch place. Everything I have ordered on the menu has been really good. The peach mango tea is delicious however it is a bit sweet for drinking more than one cup. Service was quick.

Excellent Food !

I ordered the oxtails with rice and beans. It was delicious and fresh. I RECOMMEND this restaurant for anyone who wants a taste of Jamaica. I'll be returning.

Deserves all five circles and more!

Excellent food... Stewed chicken was juicy, tender and wonderfully flavored. The homemade ginger beer was strong, but that's the way I like it. Paul was an excellent host... very friendly and handed us the Sharpie so we could write our names on the wall.

Jamaica in San Antonio? Ya man

By disciple1315 |

I am used to Jamaican food in the Bronx, NY. This was as good or better. The brown stew chicken and oxtails were excellent. Roti was amazing. Homemade Gingerbeer, 10 times better then D&G. We will be going back regularly.

Jamaican dinner!

By David T |

The food and service was excellent. I had the jerk chicken (traditional Jamaican fare) and my wife had a combo plate with oxtail and brisket. Both dinners came with rice with red beans, and plantains. This was the first time we've had Jamaican, but it was very very good. Paul was an EXCELLENT waiter. I have not had better service in much classier restaurants. If you like Jamaican, or haven't had it but are adventurous enough to try - I highly recommend this place. The curry goat is also good (they let me try one bite - I'll definitely order it next time). The ginger beer and the Jamaican punch are both good, too. It is easy to drive right by it (the sign isn't very prominent) - it is right next door to the antique store. Go, and ask for Paul, if he's available! You won't regret it.

Delicious!

First trip to Jamaica Jamaica today!! It will definitely not be my last! Great atmosphere and nice people. Food was awesome .. made me wish I was back in Negril at a roadside jerk shack. Took a couple patties to go for later and they were great! Highly recommend that everyone gives it a try.

Really good!

By lorrie221 |

This was the first time I have tried Jamaican food and I really enjoyed it! Our server was Paul and he was wonderful!! He truly cared about our fining experience. The only disappointment was that some of the items on the menu have been discontinued because they are a small place and can't keep foods that aren't requested often. Will definitely go back again....and again!

Authentic tasting Jamaican cuisine

By Steven B |

We thoroughly enjoyed the Jamaican food it took us back to our fond memories of the island. It is amazing how the aroma in the air and the taste of the food can trigger such vivid memories. It is similar to the feeling you get when you smell turkey roasting in the oven you can’t stop thinking about a Thanksgiving experience. We had the jerk chicken and it was just spicy enough to suit our tastes. Can’t wait to go back again when we are in the area. I was particularly amazed by how the only waitress was able to handle all of the tables. It took her a few extra minutes but she was very gracious so we didn’t mind at all.

Good value, out-of-the-way

By Gerry D |

The jerk chicken and ox tail are the "stars" of the regular entree menu, but I intend to go back a number of times to try some of the other, unusual to me, soups and dishes. Prices are fairly low, service a bit spotty since the one (very nice) lady serves as cashier, busses and waits tables. So, if you go for dinner and most of the about 10 tables are filled, be prepared to wait as everything is cooked-to-order. Try the stuffed beef, chicken, or vegetable pies while you're waiting.

Nostalgic tastes of home

I visited here to get some authentic Jamaican food. It hit the spot. Not a fancy place but good food and customer service.

If you like Jamaican food, you better try this place

By Bruski21 |

Been here twice. Both times the food was fabulous. I liked the chicken so much I bought one to go to take home for my wife. This is good Jamaican food. The price is low so you are really getting more than your money's worth

Awful

By poppazo |

My wife took me and my son here to eat on a Saturday night. It wasn’t too crowded but the service was slow, kept saying our food was on the way. Then it came in to go boxes, they said it was after 8 so they don’t use plates. Then when the food came it was bland, my wife had curry chicken it hardly had any flavor. I had jerk pork that wasn’t spicy and the order came with plantains but only two plantains. I will never go back here to eat and this is the worst Jamaican restaurant i have ever been too!!! I will definitely say stay away and find another Jamaican restaurant in San Antonio to eat at.
