Great local hangout

By TravelinAccidentally |

Great local spot for breakfast lunch or snack. Located on the terminus of he N line. Grab a quick cup of java or a healthy meal while you wait.

Great food, coffee, and prices!

By Lauren S |

Had a wonderful food selection for any meal of the day. We loved the smoked salmon bagel sandwich, and their drip coffee tasted great. Prices were lower than I expected for the city. The bus stops right here every morning, so it made getting around easy.

Snacks and coffee next to the beach

By andrews4322018 |

Good small place next to the beach. Standard US coffee and not the best sandwiches. But still great after beach walk.

Small cafe but great place!

By star4virgin |

I liked the place because it's too cozy with a free WIFI for all the customers. The only thing I don't like is it's too hard to find a parking place!

Great cafe location

By Christian |

The perfect place to grab a bite to eat before heading back into the city. The cafe is located right at the end of the N Judah line and across the street from the beach. I had a hearty sandwich and chips that was very good. Good local spot.

Almost a Journey back to the 1960s California Beach town

By In_Search_of_Roo |

It's almost in a time-warp - a touch of what California beach towns were like in the 60s. Great food, great drinks, great service (albeit you order at the counter and then have to pick it up). See a lot of the locals here, surfers, beach folk, and visitors from all over. It's wonderful.

Funky, good vibes!

By babubenj |

Ocean next door, almost, at the end of the N Judah line, ample servings, good coffee. It's our go-to cafe when at the western edge of town.

Great little Café & Restaurant

By Scott |

This is a fantastic little Cafe and Restaurant at the foot of Judah. Waiting for the Metro? Run in and grab a coffee or an Italian soda. If your hungry, the food looked absolutely amazing but I didn't try it. There's a nice little outdoor seating area and the staff is ultra friendly.

Fun, casual Ocean Beach restaurant

By Jean K |

We went on an absolutely gorgeous sunny warm February day--we had heard the sandwiches were amazing so we wanted to have lunch there before hitting the beach. Long lines at lunchtime, unsurprisingly. We ordered 3 sandwiches and while they were DELICIOUS--we waited at least 45 minutes for them to be made! People around us also expressed annoyance with the very long waits. Maybe one of the sandwich makers had called in sick...

Good for coffee not a meal

By gossipsquirrel |

The coffee & espresso are good. Visited twice. Great place to grab a drink & pastry. However, would not recommend for more than grab n go.

Gathering Place

By Michael B |

Been visiting here for years. A great place to meet friends at the end of the N Judah, and next to the beach.

great for light breakfast and wonderful staff

By kc~in~motion |

We stopped here for breakfast after spending the night at the nearby Ocean Park Motel. They have excellent coffee and espresso drinks. We also had bagel and granola with yogurt and fruit. They didn't appear to offer any full breakfast options but do have sandwiches. The staff could not have been nicer or more efficient and my latte was fantastic.

Excellent Food and coffees.

By Joan L |

Java Beach can have people lined up outside and that's good advertisment. Their salads, sandwiches, cookies, are wonderful and healthy with nice ingredients. The coffee and coffee drinks are also very good. In can be crowded inside, but the outside seating is plentiful

Great coffee spot

By lyoso896 |

Excellent little cafe by the beach. Serves great coffee, excellent service and the wifi is free and fast. Like the art work too.

Really good food, HUGE portions!

By Shannon M |

This cafe had a really relaxed atmosphere and I am guessing was frequented by the locals. It was always busy when I walked past whilst staying in the area, with lots of families, young people, older people and everyone in between. My husband and I ate here a number of times in our three day SF stay, and found the food really good quality, fresh, tasty and not too overdone with sauces and processes (which I've noticed can be hard to find in the US!). We had both salads and sandwiches, both of which were huge (I had one salad which did me for two nights). The San Patricia sandwich and the mexican salad were great. We did not eat in but the service when ordering was great, friendly and helpful.

Impressive!

By Becks013 |

Knowing my love for all things carb, I was impressed with my breakfast! My goodness! The homemade soda bread was amazing. Not too sweet, and an abundance of fruit. It was spectacular! Also had the Asiago bagel with the sundried tomato cream cheese. It was like having the taste of Italy in a bagel! The cascara was to die for, and the black roasted coffee tasted great. Impressive!

Friendly, bustling place just opposite the beach.

By OnParleFrancais |

Lucky me: I have never been here on a foggy or rainy day. All my visits have been sunny, and I really like this place. The coffee is excellent, and the clientele is friendly. Oatmeal very good. Snacks galore. Be aware: There are two Java Beach cafes; this is the one on Judah, at the end of the N car line.

Great coffee; reasonable price

By John Scorsine |

Just a really nice neighborhood coffee shop, awesome coffee and good pastries. Free WiFi. On bus lines and right next to the beach. Perfect mornings start here and a perfect evening can be sealed here as well.

Great coffee, delicious bagels!

By Katya |

We stayed in SF for couple days at SeaScape Inn, which is only few steps away from Java Beach. We had breakfast there every morning. Their bagels with smoked salmon are so delicious. Staff is very friendly. This cafe is very close to the beach, so one can get a cup of coffee to go and walk the beautiful beach. 🌊 ☕️

Amazing Oatmeal...and Flat White

By Joseph D |

Wonderful cafe...especially if you're up early with the pelicans and want to get a breakfast that will sustain you for the day. Their Oatmeal is awesome: huge portions and they must have it steeping in their creamy secret all night and with their Agave on top and a Flat White aside there is no better ignition in Sunset for a busy day. Great service. Quirky collection of local workers, fisherpeople, original hippies, hipsters, commuters but tourist-free. The rest of the menu looks awesome also though 05.30 is my constitutional there so I haven't been around to dabble in other foodtimes.

So good. So quaint.

By Tom Proietti |

Really, the Java Beach Cafe is a fine and fun spot in the Ocean Beach area of San Francisco. This is a public transportation kind of stop. A street. Pruner Cafe where strangers share outdoor tables, laughs , and fun. The food is local, fresh and inventive. Portions are ample and creative. Beverages are basic to exotic and all prepared on sight.

27 minute wait for a basic sandwich

By Heurrgh |

Staff were unconcerned and just shrugged when I asked for an update after 20 mins. $11 for a small, late sandwich seems step to me.

Great breakfast and coffee

By Heather S |

Great location and very nice people. Able to grab a fast and delicious breakfast with good coffee. Lots of bagel choices and my daughter loved her croissant.

Sublime Sandwiches

By Chrisoula K |

Having heard about the veggie sandwich for months we finally made it to this Cafe on a windy Sunday afternoon. Three types of cheese, veggies, sprouts and a delicious gooey dressing on multigrain bread made for sandwich heaven. The cole slaw with cranberries was a great side.... 80s music entertained us in the background...great vibe to this spot.

Favorite place in SF

By Tamara T |

This my THE place to go in SF. Close to the beach, great offer of food (sandwiches, salads, bagels) and snacks (have to try the chocolate-chip cookie!), coffee and drinks. Place seems very local and gives you warm "home" feeling. I love it!

One of the best cafés in SF

By Rasmus F |

First time I steped in I felt that atmosphere you only feel at a few places. Relaxed, quite though there was small talk around at the tables and the sound of the cook working in the back of the kitchen. The service team are awesome and doing everything to make you feel home. The food is some of the best I have tasted in USA. If I am going back to SF there is one place I know I am going to visit again and that is Java Beach Café.

Really nice

By SSamantha |

Came here for breakfast on both mornings during our stay in San Francisco. Lovely food and coffee! Bagels were really good. My husband was upset that on the second morning there wasn't any turkey and cheese croissants as he loved it so much on the first morning!

Fabulous Fabulous Fabulous

By Andrew T |

Wow great coffee (and choices) food was fabulous and TASTY !!, service was great, value excellent considering it's in pricey San Francisco. Keep it up team at Java Beach

Great coffee spot

By Jessica C |

Nice little coffee spot right across from the beach and the end of the bus line. Loved their matcha latte!

Wifi is working, numerous bites to choose from

By Jurgen D |

A nice, easy going and not too expensive place to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner, as long as you like sandwiches or salads. No matter what you order, it tastes good and the portions are big.

Tasty coffee!

By Michael N |

Loved the atmosphere and service here. Our coffee was delicious and the baristas were friendly. Good place to read a book while you drink your coffee.

Awesome cafe!

By Averil H |

We loved this cafe when we visited from NZ recently - super friendly staff, yummy food & good coffee - only downside is that it's a little bit small & crowded, but if it's not too windy the courtyard is a nice option.

Cool place after a windy walk in Ocean beach

By Bruno J |

We were happy to find this little cafe serving hot tea and got chocolates after a long walk. Young people, less young, computers etc Nice atmosphere.

Good for lunch

By Where's my scrunchie |

I had lunch to go. The place was full of people and it took a while for the food to arrive. My salad was amazing and healthy! However, it didn't come in a take away box - I had to poor my salad in it myself so it got a little messy. This place is right next to the beach so I ate my food on the beach :)

Love the Coffee and the Vibe

By Edie S |

We went here every day we stayed in Ocean Beach. Coffee is great and the bagel sandwich with salmon I got one morning was delicious. The people who work there are always very friendly and helpful.

Can't go wrong w/the hot subs

By Marla B |

My brother and I discovered this little gem after weekly swimming @ the Pomeroy Pool. Nice treat after a PT swim work out. We have tried a good portion of the items on the menu to date. If you look up their website, not sure it's current w/items being offered, just a heads up. A good portion of the time, it's a great experience. The staff is really nice, so friendly and accommodating. With the times, they just had to raise their prices and start charing for potato chips. That being said, not all the sandwiches are worth $16 and $17 respectively. All the HOT sandwiches are really good, quite plentiful and worth this new price increase. Two fails (for me in the last 2 weeks were). Java Club Turkey or Chicken Breast with Crispy Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, Avocado & Mayo on Toasted Sourdough. I ordered the Chicken breast. It was so weird. The bread was way too thick to be 3 slices. The bacon was barely existent. The avocado was a "smear" and the chicken was "huge cubes", like you would put on a salad and huge piles of lettuce. I had to deconstruct the whole sandwich, remove half the lettuce, 1 slice of bread and cut the chicken cubes into mini bite size pieces. It had absolutely no flavor. Honestly, I should have returned it and now, I will never order it again. Today I had the BLT, which I usually love but today, no bueno. There were 2 slices of bacon cut in half, 1 slice of tomato and again, too much lettuce. Again, I should have returned it, so now I won't be ordering that one again. I shall just stick w/the hot sandwiches as they are plentiful enough to become 2 meals. Probably skip the chips as last time they were stale. The salads are big enough for 2 to share. Think I will try that next. The coffee is good and strong and the homemade jam and fruit scones are too die for and sell out quickly. So call ahead if you want to ensure some are available if you are stopping by. Homemade soup is also quite good, but often needs to be rewarmed. None of this will stop us from our weekly lunch, I will just shy away from the 2 items that are just not worth $17.00.

Good little spot

By Barbara G |

Salted caramel coffee. Yum. Outside seating 1 block from the beach. Nice. Surfers, retirees, professionals. Menu for lunch looks good (next time!)

Good food in a nice location

By Lorne29 |

This deli/cafe offers good lunch fare (sandwiches and salads) at a reasonable price. It has indoor and outdoor seating.

Daily Breakfast Spot

By Trolz |

Stayed at a motel right around the corner so ate Breakfast there 4 days in a row. Have to try the Ham and Cheese on Asiago... Probably the best I have ever had...Oh, and free refills on coffee and reasonable prices. Be sure to give this place a shot!

Great funky cafe

By Devonjojo |

The staff were lovely and food tasty. Was right by the seaside, and had free wifi and power sockets. Will definitely visit again.

Favorite Breakfast Place close to the ocean

By Ping |

This became our favorite place on our SF trip. A unique place with nice people. Latte is good. Home made granola and oatmeal with berries were my favorite but the bagels are good too.

Hang out at Java Beach

By carole f |

We love this cafe. People are friendly here - we have met many interesting characters here. Great sandwiches and baked goods. Good coffee also beer and wine. You can sit inside or out. It's right across the street from the beach/ocean.

We only had muffins

By Frequent D |

The bran muffins were excellent. They're large, tasty, and not overly sweet as many others are. If we are in the area again we would try other menu items. You do have to be very lucky to find a parking spot that is near or just walk a few blocks to get there which is the norm for much of San Francisco. I can see why there are mostly small compact cars in the city.

Good sandwich stop

By mobie0309 |

Got sandwiches to go after our visit to the zoo. San Patricio chicken sandwich was excellent as was the pastrami - big sandwiches for a good price for SF. Looks like a nice selection of coffee and ice cream too.

Ridiculous Takeaway

By Darcette |

On a cycling tour, 7 of us pre-ordered for pick-up with the intent to take our sandwiches to the park. What a joke. 20 minutes later, we arrived to wait for sandwiches that were wrapped and bagged but unmarked. We rode to our picnic spot and proceeded to maul the other riders' orders to figure out which belonged to whom. Sandwiches come with chips or coleslaw and you are asked which you prefer. All 4 orders of coleslaw were missing. One sandwich was completely missing and we got one that nobody ordered. I asked for lots of salt and pepper but none was on the sandwich and no sachets in the bag. What's worse was that no prices are on the website ~ a bit of a shock when 2 sandwiches came to US $30. Fairly good food but zero value and poor service.

Nice!

By Raffaele M |

Very nice atmosphere and good position! I just had a beer with friends and I enjoyed the place nearby ocean beach! I will come back for sure!

May not look much

By MoodyUk |

This grill / cafe may not look much but is great students sitting drinking coffee / beer with internet access, really great basic food our salads where great and plentiful, nice staff , beer was on tap and good If staying at days inn ob beach or going to the Zoo go for it. watch world go by.

Surprising Menu

By CD F |

We enjoyed the food that we ate there three time in our last visit to SF. Great Breakfast fare and awesome sandwiches.

Great little place to stop after a walk along the beach

By MkTrekker |

They have a great selection of beverages, including Italian sodas and draft beer, and an assortment of lunch-type foods.

Great location, nice bagels!

By Iva C. |

The everything bagel with hummus and veggies is my go-to, and they also do these cute vanilla steamers. Cute place to study, right off the beach. We go here all the time. I've also heard the live music at night is nice!

Coffee roasted on premises!

By 4africanos |

This place is wonderful. Warm, friendly, inviting and busy! Their coffee is amazing and baked goods are fresh. Tried the boysenberry Irish soda bread and was NOT disappointed. Sandwiches are great, too! You can't go wrong here.

Great coffee & food at the beach

By M J N |

Quaint irish influenced coffee shop. They are wonderful staff and serve deli stuff and tasty coffee of your choosing.

Slow service, terrible coffee, great live music

By Crista S |

My husband and I were freezing on the beach waiting for sunset, so we decided to go in this shop for a half hour before heading back out to the beach. I ordered an at lait, and he got a chai latte and a cookie. The cookie was mediocre. The drinks arrived after at least a 10 minute wait. Free Wifi made the wait easier as well as the live music, plus it was pleasantly warm inside. My husband said his tea was just ok; my coffee was undrinkable. I held it, and it warmed me up, but I literally couldn't drink it. Made a decent hand warmer!

Awesome coffee

By Mischa |

Greate Coffee, Sandwiches are that huge you can habe Lunch, Bagels for Breakfast😉. Cool place to sit as well. _______$

Great food.

By Gordon S |

We had breakfast here each day and it all was excellent! No dislikes here. Try the muffins they are delicious.

Nice Tuna Melts!

By Mrs_Ramjam |

My husband and I stopped by here on our way too the zoo, it's just over the road and we figured we'd be better off getting lunch here as often the food at Zoos is over priced and of horrendous quality. It was a few years back that we visited but I remember the Tuna and cheese melts were EPIC and served with crisps. There were lots of people buying lunch (and an adorable school trip all buying ice creams with sprinkles, bless!) so took a while to be served but the service was good and cheery and there was a really nice laid back vibe. There were lots of delicious things on the menu and I wish we could have tried more!

Tasty but weak coffee with charmless staff

By GMT862 |

Latte was quite tasty but gave absolutely no kick whatsoever! Very tasty bagel for a good price. Staff were completely charmless. Many people in the cafe were on laptops so there wasn't a very friendly atmosphere. Some more interesting music may help perhaps.

Small, popular, relaxed cafe

By o2bblonde |

We were visiting San Francisco and decided to meet my husband here (after he had rented a bike to look around). It was the last stop on the N-line which was great for my elderly mother as we basically stepped off the train and straight into the cafe. It was extremely busy and crowded but fortunately my husband had waited in the queue (for around 20 minutes) and managed to get a table for us. As there was a heatwave in San Francisco that week, the cafe was extremely hot with lots of people in it and the ceiling fans barely worked - so it was not very pleasant as far as the temperature goes. As far as the food is concerned we had beautiful salads and good coffee. I can see why it's popular with the locals as it is directly across the road from the beach, last stop of the N-line and good food.

beach boys - california dreamin'....

By LundyIreland |

i love this place! yes its simple cafe food but its wholesome, tasty and good value and i promise i have never tasted nicer bagels. There is just something in the atmosphere that makes me think of SF in the 70's maybe its the occasional wet suited customer with the surf board parked at the door!

Great spot for coffee

By Rob B |

this place is right on the corner by the Beach. .popular with locals which is always a good sign. . .. loved the coffee and muffin

Great place

By RachelH64 |

Had breakfast here one day while staying at the oceanview motel, nice coffee shop friendly staff great coffee and pastries!

So Nostalgic It Almost Makes Me Cry!

By Carol R |

Pretty much everything San Franciscans have been liking for breakfast and lunch is available here. It's not a foodie place, it's a surfer and beach walker place. The food is simple and substantial. No problem getting anything you remember from the 70s or earlier, my friend, and it's just as good as you remember. I want a sandwich on Dutch crunch bread! The atmosphere is great, too. Lots of people who live in The City and have done so for decades.

Charming local cafe, right by the beach

By JanCarol S |

Went there to meet a local friend. She recommended Java Beach. I ordered a barbeque chicken sandwich, sans bread (No gluten free available), an italian soda, and later a chai. My partner had the pesto mozarella melt. We were both quite pleased with the food, which was fresh, and felt organic / free trade, even though I don't remember being notified of that. The coffees were all local. The chai was quite different, but appealing. We were allowed to sit and talk for hours. Power boards and wifi are provided for the laptop people to set up and work a spell with their favorite bite and cuppa. At 6:30, a guitar / flute jazz duo started some original music. (this was good, but hampered conversation). Parking was fairly easy, and my local friend met us by public transport - as there was a tram stop right next to the restaurant.

Community and good food

By Chris |

Whether you grab a coffee after your surf or morning run or sit down for a draft beer or have a family lunch at one of the tables outside, the Java Beach Cafe will accommodate you. We went for a late lunch and enjoyed the sandwiches (veggie and cheese in particular) as well as the teas and coffees. The work of local artists on display on the walls.

Great cafe along the Great Highway

By kapshure |

Java Beach cafe has been a beach side favorite of mine for many years. They have great sandwiches, great iced coffee, and even beers on tap. On nice days at the beach - yes they exist - the cafe can get very crowded, with people lounging outside, engaged in conversation, dog-watching, or just people-watching. The staff has always been warm and inviting, so I recommend stopping in for a visit sometime.

Good stop for a coffee, beer or a bite to eat...

By Outlandabout |

Fun and funky with free Internet access. Good place for a quick bite for breakfast, lunch or snack. Coffee,, beer, and food are all good.

Limited and pricey

By alanvoetsch |

We stopped in for a muffin and couple of doughnuts. Doughnuts are 3.50 each. But it's SF and everyone needs to make a huge profit to live there, plus all the taxes.

Lovely little cafe

By Sarah C |

We stopped here one morning for breakfast on our way to the zoo, the coffee was delicious and they done a good variety of things to eat, I personally enjoyed the peanut butter on toast as I was missing it from home, the rest of my party all tried different things and all said it was lovely food. It seemed popular with the locals as well which means it must of been a good cafe.

Nice casual place, large menu

By Alan L |

I only had a peanut butter bagel, which was fine. They have a surprisingly large variety of choices though (bagels, sandwiches, soup, drinks, etc).

Great little café hidden away at the end of the N Judah train line near Ocean Beach

By GardenerCook16 |

I was heading out to see Ocean Beach at the end of a fabulous fortnight in San Francisco and had intended going to the Chalet restaurant further along the coast. A friendly local sitting next to me on the bus recommended this place though, so I popped in for a bite to eat. The place was buzzing with full tables outside and in, friendly staff and an extensive, yet reasonably-priced menu. Lots of locals too, by the look of things - always a good sign. I ordered the salmon & cream cheese poppy seed bagels and finally "got" the hype about bagels. They were amazing: served just warm with lashings of filling, they really hit the spot. A far cry from the tasteless offerings I've had in the UK... My Arnold Palmer (lemonade and iced tea) was great too - when in America.... I'd certainly go back on a future visit and work my way down the list: lots of vegetarian offerings and the staff seemed very happy to accommodate individual requests to add or subtract ingredients. Free wifi, as is often the case in the US, so lots of people working away on their laptops. An excellent find.

Went back on recent trip

By Frequent D |

We visited Java Beach again this week for coffee, muffins and a big chocolate chip cookie for a little treat which my wife and I enjoyed a couple of days later after returning home. The coffee was really good and there are a number of selections to choose from. The cookie was really good, but they seemed to have changed the bran muffins that were sweeter than on our last visit so wouldn't order them next time. The sandwiches looked really good and would try them out on any futures visits. They were very crowded, but I was lucky enough to find a parking spot a couple of blocks away on the beach road and a table outside the restaurant.

Great coffee and snack spot one block off the beach

By Tricia |

At the end or the beginning (depending on your perspective) of the Judah line sits the Java Beach. Good coffee, good snacks, good WiFi- soundtrack as of late is 80s perfection mixed with 60s Motown. Wooden tables and benches inside , outdoor tables on the patio for the rare, treasured sunny day in the Outer Sunset. One block off Ocean Beach and not far from Golden Gate Park.

love the ambience!

By Barbara S |

great place, very popular. seems like a nice place to hangout, meet friends.... the breakfasts and pastries looked yummy!

nice little hideaway near the beach

By harbrsl |

the menu is varied and very reasonably priced. i nearly fell over when my sandwich arrived - it was huge! i took half home and had it for dinner. the staff was very nice and accommodating. the space is a bit cramped inside but i like the vibe of the place. it wasn't loud and it was bright with all the windows in front. too bad there wasn't more outdoor seating available for our visit but maybe next time...

Used to be great.

By molly m |

I waited nearly an hour for my vegetarian sandwich (I got it to go). When I got back to my hotel room I found that it was full of Turkey. 14 dollars for the wrong sandwich! I used to go here all the time, but never again.

The "Cheers' of coffee houses

By Genevieve R |

What a delightful neighborhood go to! We had great coffee, food and service. Watching the staff welcome their regulars warmed our hearts. Loved the coffee and the the breakfast sandwiches.

Fanatastic house brew coffee!

By joyalfa |

The house brew dark roast coffee is FANTASTIC! and the decaf roast was just as amazing and the server made a new pot so it would be fresh. We would rturn all the way back to SF just for the coffee!

the BEST

By Abigail |

Hands down the best coffee in San Fran. the Caramel Lattes are divine it's a few steps away from Ocean Beach and there are dogs everywhere which only makes it more amazing

Best coffee

By climberchica |

We stopped in for coffee and a quick lunch after surfing. The wait was a little long, but the coffee was the best we had in California. Sandwiches were good and hearty. This place is worth the stop.

Father's day coffee

By wineman1981 |

Outstanding coffee and bagels! Highly recommend it to anyone, looking to bring the family here when they come out to visit
