Big Wait for Big Disappointment

By Scott B |

We waited an hour from the back of the line to when we ordered. Food looked great, but taste wasn't that good. Ordered a cheese steak with provalone, mushrooms, peppers and it was just not tasty. The mushrooms and peppers were out of a jar. The meat wasn't very flavorful. At least they had a good beer to enjoy to wash the taste out of my mouth with. The employees were very friendly, I do have to give them that. Seating upstairs cleared out pretty quick once a table finished eating, so we were able to sit once our food was ready. Bathrooms were not the cleanest.

Foodish

By Maros7779 |

After trying other sandwiches we decided to enter here. It was a great choice, the best sandwich ever! Freshly prepared before our very eyes. When you enter and look around you feel the history and passion of those who carry on a tradition. There were no tourists, it was full of locals.

Authentic place, authentic sandwich

By Dajzi13 |

The place is far away enough from the city center that the patrons are either local or visitors who care enough about the food quslity to walk for 20 minutes to get to Jim’s. The place is nice and looks and feels like stopped in time decades ago. The cheesesteak sandwich was good, but lost the battle (according to my tasting) to Pat’s. Go and check for yourself!

Great cheesesteaks

By Vegasrebel |

I have had a few different cheesecakes before, but Jim's is the best ever. In a unpretentious takeout and upstairs seating location, this place serves fabulous steak sandwiches. If you are visiting Philly downtown, after long walks learning about our history, check out this restaurant, and make your memory.

My Philly cheesesteak

By eae01 |

I visited Philadelphia recently and had on my agenda an authentic Philly cheesesteak. I did research before going and identified a number of places including this one, as well as Ishkabibble's down the street. I wanted the best so I considered the consensus critic's favorite Dalessandro's. Once in Philly however, I decided Dalessandro's was too far off the beaten track. So I settled on Jim's and was glad I did. Jim's is located near a bunch of stuff a tourist wants to see, and the place itself is classic. The cheesesteak did not disappoint either, as the (again, classic) staff expertly loaded up the bread with the meat and onions, turning it over on the grill, putting on the cheese (wiz). It was delicious. As I toured South Street digesting my bounty I came across the well regarded Ishkabibble's which only reinforced the fortuitousness of my choice, as the place looked like your typical fast food franchise. None of the atmosphere of Jim's.

Excellent cheesesteak

By Marc_and_Kim_Z |

Got there a bit after it opened and still stood in line. Cash only so be prepared. Excellent cheesesteak and won’t need to eat the rest of the day. Loved the artwork on the second floor!

Stingy on the cheese, forgot the onions, charge extra for toppings, rushed us out from tables.

By KJBEAR |

Went here and ordered 3 cheesesteak sandwiches, each with a different cheese (WIZ, American and Provolone) as well as onions and peppers. STINGY ON CHEESE!! The provolone cheese was not visible - not sure if any was even on the sandwich. The other two had cheese, but just barely visible. They FORGOT the onions - (mind you, they charge extra for every topping!! So I paid for onions and didn't get them). We had opened the sandwiches and I went downstairs to get onions and they said to bring the sandwiches down. WELL, we opted not to cause they were already opened and it would have been messy. But more so, WOULD THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT WANT opened sandwiches back behind the counter? I don't think so !!! Then a friend showed up as we were finishing, so we waited for him to finish his sandwich (doesn't take long to eat a sandwich) and since we had thrown away our garbage, the employee came over to us (while our friend was still eating) and said we need to leave cause people were waiting downstairs. It would have been a matter of 3 minutes maximum for our friend to finish. It was very rude. Suffice to say - go to JOHN's Roast Pork or D'Allesandro's instead of this place!!

Cheesesteak Heaven

By R3411LZdans |

Jim's is a well-known establishment in Philadelphia. Four of us stopped in to try their famous cheesesteaks. The place was hopping! Lots of locals and tourists there. We waited in line for less than 10 minutes while the smells drove us crazy. The cooks are very efficient. I ordered a Cheese Steak with Whiz, mushrooms and peppers. Grilled onions come with the sandwich. It was fantastic! A real Philly delight. All the flavors combined with the delicious bread really make the meal. No reason to order sides as the cheesesteak fills you up. We ate in the upstairs seating area and had a window seat with a view of the South Street stores. Good prices, great food! Don't miss it.

Not bad

By dave911nj |

I was told this was the best in Philly by my girlfriend. So we went. It was OK. Even she said it seemed like it went downhill a bit. The service at the counter was good and quick.

Awe some Cheese Steaks

By GGWD |

Having tried the traditional recommended spots that the tourists are told to go to, this one is way better. Definitely out on the list for good authentic cheese steaks without the attitude the others have.

Delicious and a great environment

By itsmeamy |

Local residents suggested this place to get a philly, and wow! It's in a cool old building, staff instantly make you feel like you made the right choice and then - DELICIOUS cheesesteak. They have traditional and other versions. The line moves quick; you have to figure out fast what you want, but staff will help you decide if you ask. They aren't outrageously friendly, but they're not rude, and they certainly know what they're talking about. There's seating upstairs and it's fabulous. They only take cash, but there is an ATM machine there.

Totally awesome

By Robert C |

The absolutely best Philly cheesesteak I have had anywhere. The meat was so moist. We got lucky and the line was not super long. The wiz is so flavorful. Just great stuff here.

Delicious quality cheese steaks

By Khoi N |

Amazing cheeseteaks. I always have to stop by when I'm in Philly. You do pay around $1 for additional toppings. Don't be turned away by the long lines. 30 person line you can get through it within 15 mins

A Few Tips About Jim's Steaks

By Marty Bielicki |

Jim’s Steak South Street is a “institution” in Philadelphia. Known for having outstanding varieties of cheesesteak. I like the original: extra whiz and onions. The main eatery is located along South Street. This eatery is hard to miss. Many times, there is a long line down the street—particularly on weekends. You haven’t visited Philadelphia until you had a cheesesteak from Jim’s. Walking down South Street is an experience too. The ambiance is different than many other Philadelphia neighborhoods. There is a new kiosk at the Philadelphia airport. Ironically, when I visited there was no long line! The food, though, still outstanding. If you found this review “helpful” in any way, please press “LIKE” to let me know.

When you are here you are served nothing but diseases and brutality...

By 2BAlwaysonthego |

If you Google Jim's Steaks and man being tased or rats you will see two horrific videos about this restaurant. My fiancé and I went to Jim's Steaks. Instead of getting a cheesesteak, we were harassed by the owner and the staff simply because I tried to sit at a table while my fiancé ordered food. While my fiancé was waiting in line to order our food, I went upstairs to find a table. From the moment I sat down, one of the employees, Eric, started harassing me, calling me sweetheart this and sweetheart that. He hovered over me, got in my face, and tried to intimidate me simply because I was sitting at a table. I repeatedly told Eric that if he had a problem with me sitting at a table, he should get a manager. Instead, Eric sat down at the table and told me that he wasn’t going to leave me. This is the kind of comment a stalker would make and I felt extremely uncomfortable. I then went to get a manager myself. The manager showed no concern for the way Eric had acted, and stated that you must have food to sit at a table, even though this is posted nowhere. Frustrated by the manager's apathy, we asked to speak to the owner, Ken Silver, who was irate form the moment we saw him. He didn't listen to a word we had to say and screamed at us to leave his restaurant despite the fact that it was his employee who was in the wrong and despite us already walking out the door. This place is disgustingly dirty and the owner and his staff are deplorable. Avoid eating here at all costs!

Don’t miss Jim’s when looking for cheesesteak

By MeetUsAtTheCorner |

Jim’s on South Street came recommended by travel magazines as well as friends from the Philadelphia area as a place to go besides the trendy Pat’s-Geno’s duo, and those recommendations were spot on. Get it to go if you wish, but here you do have a choice of taking it upstairs to a dining room with a dozen or more tables that are constantly cleared. We tried cheesesteak “with” and “without” (grilled onions) and both we’re delicious. The meat is a bit thinner than at many place and that seems to make it just right as far as texture, moistness and taste goes. Add the extras or just cheese; either way, you are going to enjoy it. There may be better cheesesteaks in Philly, but we’re still looking — and planning to go back by Jim’s as well.

good cheese steak

By kenracine |

They only had take out. couldnt eat inside. It was fine, but not outstanding. They were very friendly.

Passes the "locals" test

By Linda G |

Small, unassuming (missed it the first time round), but the steaks are to die for. Watch as the guy makes your cheesesteak (choice of cheese, with/without onions), then ask for the "extras" at the till. Take out or sit-in, but be aware that the tables are up a very steep stair. Worth it for the view and the posters etc, though, if you can make it.

Non touristy alternative

By dfbf |

I had my Philly cheesesteak here instead of going to the more touristed spots. It was very good, but I won't try Cheese Whiz again. (Try real cheese instead.) The line is indeed long, much like an amusement park, and there is no place to park. Someone had to drive in circles for 30+ minutes while we got our steaks.

Authentic Philly landmark near historic district

By boanerges57 |

Jims is basically a landmark in Philly. There is essentially nothing mind boggling about a cheese steak (just definitely don't get wiz as that's not even cheese). The steaks here are good and the area is close to historical attractions. You can avoid the tourist traps of Gino vs Pat and get something authentic, somewhere the staff are friendly...aka Jim's.

Good food, below average service

By Jaime C |

After reading all the reviews of the best cheesesteak decided on Jim’s. My bf said it was the best cheesesteak he ever had. I had an Italian hoagie and it was fine. There was about 6 people behind the counter all talking to each other and not taking care of guests which is annoying but whatever.

Classic Philly Cheesesteak

By elysec2018 |

No matter what time of day, Jim's is always a good idea. The service is quick and efficient while the cheesesteaks are delicious. Even if there is a long line, it moves quickly and is worth the short wait! The upstairs dining area is beautiful -- so many unearthed mosaics.

No reason to be so famous.

By EbyMargaritis |

Ordered and steak no "whiz." Cooking is done right in front of the customer. The grill was filthy as if sanitation was not part of the brand. The fry cooks weren't wearing hair nets. The person that wrapped the sandwich wasn't wearing gloves and handled the money. Had to go through the kitchen storage area to go upstairs to eat. The Philly steak sandwich was soggy and unseasoned. Not worth the effort of getting to the restaurant.

Good sandwich

By LostInTime |

I ordered the cheesesteak with provolone. It was pretty good. The sandwich was about a foot long and was pretty tasty.

Nothing But Hype, Where's the Cheese?

By Bytor56 |

Not really sure why this place was touted by so many as the one of the best places in the city to get an authentic and great Philly cheesesteak. The place is basically a conveyer belt of sandwiches, basically a glorified Subway. Get them in and get them out. No focus on quality, just quantity. We ordered two with provolone cheese and were sorely disappointed in the lack of cheese, it was not even melted and the dry meat was thrown on top in a hurried fashion to get people in an out of the restaurant. If this is the best cheesesteak in Philly then it leaves a lot to be desired.

Worth the trip from San Francisco!

By Mike M |

We visited the Liberty Bell and then took the pleasant five block walk to Jim’s and were not disappointed! Friendly staff that truly seemed to be happy to be there. That is critical. Next the food was freshly prepared and was delicious. Old school Fink on the radio and the staff was grooving along. This may be a “tourist trap”, but the cheesesteak was perfect. No complaints from these Californians.

Milkboy

By jgrote15 |

We ate at Milkboy across the street and they have Jim's on the menu. It's right across the street. It was awesome.

The best?

By S N |

The best? I know there are a lot of choices when in comes to cheesesteaks in Philly, but you need to try Jim’s. They have a great processhave a great price

First Stop

By Travel_lovin_momma |

Straight from the airport to Jim’s and it did not disappoint. Definitely get the whiz! Chef was friendly and restaurant was clean.

A South Street Classic Steak and Cheese

By Rich Negri |

For years, my wife has been raving about her annual pilgrimage to Philly for authentic steak and cheese hoagies. I was never really into steak and cheese hoagies, but I figured I’d try if the opportunity presented itself. Well, today was the day! We woke up this morning and decided that we needed a change of scenery and set course for Philly. I did some research on my own (Thanks Thrillist!) and Jim’s came up as a top 5 spot to grab a steak and cheese. Ironically enough, Jim’s was on my wife’s top 3 list lol. My verdict - easily the best steak and cheese I’ve ever had! Now, granted, this was my first and only authentic Philly steak and cheese, so my only comparison is against wannabes opening up shop in Baltimore. But I will definitely be back again to try other spots, and grab a steak and cheese from Jim’s to go as a sign of loyalty. So, if you’re ever on south street and in the mood for a good steak and cheese, stop at Jim’s!

OMG!!! What a disappointment!

By Inbalrozen |

OMG!!! What a disappointment! We came in on a weekend getaway from NYC, waited in line for over and hour, and finally were served with the most dull, flavorless steak sandwich !! No words!! I would give this place a zero if it was possible! Much better philly cheese steak sandwich at the Reading market!!

Go for the Philly Steak!

By Airline CITIZEN 0110 |

After being advised by a number of folks where to find a good Philly Cheese we walked to JIMS on South Street, the building itself I would describe as iconic and it had that diner feel to it, the Philly Cheese was fabulous and loved every bit if it....this was our first visit so weren't all that familiar about how things worked....unfortunately the Staff turned on the Rude ! Worth the experience and it may have been a bad time for them ...........

Great Steak!

By KMY |

Always a solid cheesesteak. I go American without. Took my oldest to Jim’s for his first and now my youngest.

Philly cheesesteak

By Lindsay M |

First time to Philly and wanted to try a cheesesteak so came here based off of a recommendation. It was actually my first cheesesteak ever so I don't have much to compare it to, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was very tasty! The prices were very reasonable and the portions were great. I think if you're visiting Philly, this should be high on your list. The ordering process was a little hectic because it was so busy, but once we sat down to eat upstairs, the atmosphere was great. I would certainly recommend it to anyone in Philly looking to try a cheesesteak.

A delicious classic

By Helen K L Espinosa |

A classic that needs to be appreciated! The first cheesesteak is not forgotten! The place is quite cool, you can watch the snack being prepared.

My favorite Cheesesteak in Philly

By Stephanie M |

These cheesesteaks are awesome. This is my favorite in Philly. I would only say the place is very crowded so you probably should just get them to go.

Too Close for Comfort

By Island Girl |

I have been eating cheesesteaks from Jim’s since the 80’s, after seeing bands such as the MIBS and Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers at J. C. Dobbs. 5 stars for taste, but subtracted two stars this visit, because of the lack of social distancing, This was definitely not being practiced. The customers in the line were so close that everyone was getting their orders mixed up. The woman behind me put toppings on my cheesesteak and I had to wait for mine to be remade. The tables outside were not being cleaned after each patron. Please resolve these issues, they are too close for my comfort!!

Travel steaks

By BobK2012 |

Cheesesteaks to bring back to Virginia. Tell them and they put the wax paper between the steak and the bread. A big hit when I got home.

Wiz wit, amazing but standard

By Chase V |

They swamp the sandwich with cheese whiz, very good angus beef but is almost like ground beef and the extra whiz adds a soggy bun. Would return if in the area, but very much a line and tourist location for something you can find in your local neighborhood.

Disappointed

By Josie M |

Came to Philly for a Vacation. The big bus tour guides recommended this place. Very disappointed. The cheese steaks were bland tasting. Outdoor tables (no seating). Required to wear a mask and if you don’t wear one you will be yelled at until you put it on. Cash only restaurant. I know in Philly the people are very fast paced and not friendly but, the girl who rang us up was very very rude. Will not be back.

Best sandwich ever!

By Cristina S |

I was recommended this place by a few locals so I decided to go all the way there just to try the Cheese Steak. And it was as messy as it was delicious. I’m so glad I had this instead of going somewhere near me.

High quality meat...so tender!

By Jenny A |

Our Phillysteak sandwiches were awesome...worth the line up! Got there around 5:30 pm on a Friday and the line was at the door. People kept coming and within 15 mins the lineup went around the block. It's goes fairly fast though. Staff is well organized. Enjoyed the experience!

Great Philly Steak Sandwich

By ghislainpil0n |

This was a great sandwich. The wait to get a sandwich was over 45 minutes, but it was worth it. This is a most due if you are visiting Philadelphia.

My go-to for a cheesesteak!

By Woodytabs |

I’ve had cheesesteaks all over Philly, and Jim’s is my favorite. If you’re in the South St. area this is the place to stop. I’m originally from the Midwest, and the steaks at Jim’s show why the Philly cheesesteak is world famous. Best sandwiches on the planet!

I Should've Gotten The Wiz...

By Eric W. |

(Last visited 8/23/2021.) Working in Philadelphia for the week and I'm on the hunt for THE BEST cheesesteak in the city! Of course I could simply go to Pat's or Geno's downtown, but I asked the real locals of the area and the name "Jim's South Street" kept on coming up. So of course, I had to come here because usually the locals know best... Atmosphere/Appearance: Set right on South Street on near Society Hill is this gem. There's only street parking available so be mindful of that. This place is so retro it's insane. Lol. Well, I don't know if it's retro or just "original". Everything from all the aluminum paneling, the logo, the black + white tile, the chairs, I mean just everything screams original and that adds to the character of this place. I just know it's gonna be good. So downstairs is the queue (it can get really long). You place your order, watch a dedicated staff member cook then chop up the meat then it goes down the assembly line. Lol. Fair enough. You can then take your food to go or head upstairs to the dining area if there's even room up there. Service: There's no table service, but the people behind the counter were really friendly and quick on getting your order prepared. Food: I went with the cheesesteak then added mushrooms, peppers and onions. I also went with the controversial provolone cheese against the cheese wiz. I'm not gonna lie... the meat isn't seasoned. It's just cooked and put in the sandwich. The mushrooms and onions also come out of a can so... yeah. To each their own! This just wasn't my favorite cheesesteak that I've ever had. It could've used more salt or flavor. Perhaps, that cheese wiz could've done the trick... Value: My sandwich was about $10.00 and that's a pretty good deal in my opinion. It's quick, filling and will definitely quench that craving. Thank you for reading this far! If you're hungry for more, please head on over to my YouTube channel, "The Hungry Road" to check out the video I did for this place!

Got to Philly at 11pm and first stop was to Jim's

By ladybug314 |

Had to stop and have a cheese steak as soon as we got to Philly. In the many times we have eaten here this was the first time I was able to walk right in. But I would have waited an hour for it. As always, it was great! Love the Italian. Wife is not a huge cheese steak person but she will get one here.

cheesesteak heaven

By Hank956 |

I have had 4 other types of cheesesteaks and this one is by far the best. There is a line but it runs in fast. Seating is available upstairs which is nice for cold days. Looks like you are going into the subway but comfortable. You have time to make your selection. 30 seconds after you state your selection it it being wrap. Grab some chips and your liquid of choice soda or beer. Staff were friendly and an experience. A must visit.

Crushing people for peppers

By Brandon Del Borrello |

Still a good steak, was better before. Family and I use to always go because they gave fried bullet pepper s in oil. Now a days they are charging 1$ for cup that has max 5 little peppers in it. Dont misunderstand, I get it food cost went up very high, so charging for the peppers no big deal. However when I asked if I could fill up the cup and I would pay more? The only option was to pay for as many cups as I wanted. The cups with nothing in them. So I paid 6$. No worries future reference I’ll fry my own from now on a go where the steaks are better a not drenched in oil. Using way too much water/oil to cook the meat takes away from flavor. 38$ for 2 steaks a peppers no thank you. It’s not money it’s principle. FYI a big bag a peppers is 6$. You’re making more profit on peppers than sandwiches, and losing a long time customer. Oregon or Skinny Joey gets u better Steak.

Great Cheese Steak, a locals favorite

By TIM B |

Went to this location with a group during a Cheesesteak Tour, and several thought Jim’s was the best, including all the locals we spoke with while standing in line at this and other locations. Got it with the Cheese Wiz as that is the Philly way.

Best Cheesesteaks!

By davyd83 |

It was my first time back since the reopening and Jim's has done an outstanding job! Their cheesesteak is still the best around and the staff was outstanding! If I'm in Philly, this is definitely on the itinerary! Congrats Jim's! You're awesome!

Best philly cheese steak

By A91B |

I’ve been there with my friends and it’s one of the best steaks sandwich maker I’ve ever tried , it’s a must if you are visiting Philadelphia, I’ll be back for sure next time I’ll visit philly .

Worth every Penny and every bite!

By Jeremy M |

We drove 3 hours just to eat at this location. It was worth every penny and every bite. In fact I ordered 2 cheesesteaks! Never had one with WHIZ before and was impressed. Plan ahead to stand in line tho! It is a very popular place. They have some seating in the upper part of the location

Where the locals are

By WaJello |

While the TV hypes up two other locations in the area we were lucky enough to have a local tell us that Jim’s was the place to go. The establishment was nice and the staff was wonderful! We ordered the original and pizza sub. Both were delicious with great flavor! They also have beer available. Seating is now available upstairs.

Lived up to the hype

By Kimkrankin |

Plain and simple, I had a terrific cheesesteak here. The experience was walking up to a counter top to order , select which type cheese ( provolone or whiz) or no cheese, grilled onions or not … then order drinks pick up chips if wanted and pay. Seating was upstairs, not a lot of seating. But our party of 6 was able to get seated midday without a wait. 3 of the six of us decided to try the whiz cheese sauce our tour guide recommended. The others had provolone which they all enjoyed. We all had the sandwiches with the grilled onions . My sandwich with the whiz was delicious. My friend who had provolone tasted mine and said my sandwich was juicier than hers which comparatively she said tasted a little drier. She concluded that perhaps the whiz sauce soaked into the very fresh soft bread more easily than the provolone. The drinks available were typical non alcoholic drinks as well as a selection of beers. There may have been more but that is what we ordered. The food was ready quickly and prices were reasonable for the portion size you get. Loved my Philly cheesesteak !

Incredible!

By Costin Busioc |

For sure one of the best Philly Steaks I had. The queue can get quite long, but you can order in about 30 minutes and the time is worth it. The diversity is more than enough and the taste is incredible.

Best Cheesesteak in Philly

By boniwolf |

I love Pats, Genos and Sonnys buy Jims is my number one go to in Philly. I get the Whiz and American steak and I love it!

my first cheesesteak

By Fal L |

Staff was lovely and the location is amazing. I would give Jims a five star but the meat had no seasoning and I think that is purposely for obvious reasons. The meat was tender and fresh. Bread was nice and soft. Veggies were great. They served beer, too. I loved that. LOL

Fun experience

By gandycat |

It felt like a true Philadelphia experience waiting in line at Jim’s. We waited about 25 minutes to get our food. The cheese steaks were good but I think I had too high expectations from all of the recommendations from friends and family. I like a bigger chop and the meat wasn’t seasoned enough for me. I actually added salt which I almost never add to anything. But it was good quality, the bun was excellent, the staff were pleasant and happy to help us.

One of my Philly favorites!

By Kdawg282 |

One of my favorite cheesesteak options in Philly, I highly recommend Jim’s! Inside seating available upstairs and ATM inside (only accepts cash). My favorite steak here is the pizza steak!

It's Time To Invest In A Credit Card Machine!!!

By Motrya O |

Hubby and I are both fans of cheesesteaks. I always thought that the cheesesteaks in Philly were supposed to be SO much better than what we have in the DC suburbs. We’ve been to Pat and Geno’s in the past, both were good. Fast forward to a few days ago when we visited Jim’s South Street. Our expectations were high since this place gets such positive reviews. The menu us limited but liked that we could customize our cheesesteaks, including adding mushrooms and peppers. We also liked that it’s a brick and mortar restaurant with seating. However, they don’t even have “plastic-ware” for customers. As for the cheesesteaks, they are on par with what we have in DC. They were good but we weren’t blown away by them. One last gripe is that they only take cash, no credit. It's the 21st century, it's time to invest in a credit card machine. Parking is also a pain so wouldn’t go out of our way to eat here again.

An opinion from the "West Side" of Pennsylvania

By B6474SUrichardm |

Ok, I'm originally from Pittsburgh, so maybe that taints me but I'll take a Primanti sandwich over the regular cheesesteak with onions and whiz. I ordered that to get the traditional sandwich but I think I should have went with a pepper steak? I've had other cheesesteaks that tasted much better IMO. Next time I'll try Tony Luka's (don't recall the exact name) or whatever the other mainstay place is. Sorry but maybe Penguins fans just don't understand traditional Philly cheesesteak? Nahhh

Delicious - Go Here!

By CindyLou5594 |

The cheesesteak from here was delicious! We got the standard whiz with (cheese whiz and onions). I normally don’t even like beef/steak so much but this was SO GOOD! This IS how it’s done!

Cheese Wiz at it's very Best!!!

By Jim H |

Ok, I normally don't review Restaurants, but since this is my name sake, what the heck! My Wife was very apprehensive about going to have a Philly Steak Sandwich with Cheese Wiz, but I convinced here that when in Philly, well.,.....you know. So we did. We came here right after the tourist Museums closed at 5pm, it's was walkable from Old Philly about a 15-20 casual walk. There was a short line when we arrived but by the time we got our order (about 15 min- it was still busy and made to order- but moves very fast), the line was halfway down the block. so if you visit I would suggest not at Noon, not at Dinner hours. The sandwich itself was very good and even made my wife a believer in Cheese Wiz! Local following, so if you want an authentic Philly Steak Sand, I would recommend Jim's. We tried a couple of others, this would be our choice to go back to. Be warned seating is all upstairs so if you have climbing issues, get it to go.

Love this place.

By benjaminlongfellow |

This is a must stop every time I visit Philly. The best cheesesteaks there are, they did not disappoint at all.

Yum!

By 808BV |

Visiting philly for the first time, I had lots of choices to finally have authentic Philly Cheesesteak. I decided on Jim’s Steak. Got the cheesesteak with extra whiz, mushrooms and onions. Cash only, order food first then head upstairs for seating.

Great spot to stop by while in Philly

By Jennifer C |

We took a cab here since parking is a nightmare, and it was a Friday night. The food was delicious and quick service. The upstairs has seating but you cant get a seat until you have your food. We were a party of 5 and it wasnt long before we all sat together.

Be Prepared To Wait in Line

By Maria K |

I'm not quite sure it was worth the wait in line, although it was tasty. Would I do it again? Yes! The line moves fairly quickly, but it is out the door and this was on a Sunday around 2 in the afternoon. I think the atmosphere is what gets everyone going. Everyone is excited to be there, and are in a good mood. The steak itself was great, I think that next time I need to really think about what I want on it, and didn't really enjoy the Whiz on it, and think I'd go with provolone the next time. It also needed the green peppers. But that's just me. There is limited seating downstairs but they do have an upstairs.

Authentic Philly Cheesteak

By georgekJ9928RK |

Eh, it was Okay. I actually think I probably have had a better cheesesteak at Lil Phillies in Satellite Beach, FLA. But, the location is cool, and having an actual Philly Cheesesteak in Philly is pretty cool. Yes, I would recommend doing this once. Cash only place. They do have an ATM. If you get there 1045 ish, less wait time in line and you can park street side.

Bland cheesesteaks, excellent space

By Sam K |

Ordered a cheesesteak with wiz and extra onions. The meat was a bit dried out and very bland and the cheese was tasteless. It definitely needed more seasoning. I've had much better cheesesteaks from the food trucks downtown or from Sonny's. The building is a real treat, however. The sit-down dining spaces are sparkling clean, as are the all-gender restrooms. It's quiet enough upstairs to have a long conversation with friends without straining to hear. Be sure to check out the spectacular mosaic rooms upstairs by Philly artist Isaiah Zagar, the artist behind the Magic Gardens.

Disappointing.

By Libby W |

We got a sandwich here but the meat was flavorless. No vibe in the restaurant and the bathroom was dirty. Only Philly cheese-steak sandwich I've ever had. Should have tried a different place.

No comparisons

By GSP_Mom |

We asked locals for their pick of places for cheesesteaks and Jims seemed to be popular. Took an Uber there. Line was out the door, took about 45 minutes for the line to get us inside. There is seating upstairs (did not go) on a first come first serve basis. The food was good and reasonably priced, however we felt the meat could have been seasoned with at least salt and pepper. This was our only place we tried a cheesesteak, no do not have any comparison restaurants. I would definitely recommend, just be prepared to wait and possibly eat on the sidewalk or take with you. Service was EXCELLENT.

BEST PLACE FOR AUTHENTIC PHILLY CHEESTEAK

By Alyssa Byington |

atmosphere was great, and so was the food. only downsides are they only accept cash and the food was a little pricey.

4th Holiday Weekend in Philly

By Nicholas D |

Spent the 4th of July Holiday weekend in Philly checking out the sights. Went to a Philadelphia Union game and then headed into town to find an authentic cheesesteak place. We found this place on trip advisor. Easy to get to, we were able to find street parking with only a little bit of driving around, the staff was very helpful making sure the kids got exactly what they wanted, the place was clean, they had upstairs seating, and the food was excellent. Definitely will go back if we are in the area again! 5 stars!

"UNDERWHELMING!"

By Monkeesmom |

Hadn't eaten here in years, and I found out why when we ate here this trip! Our "go to" closed early this night so the hotel driver suggested we go to Jim's...so we did. The 2 steaks minus onions were better than the ones With. By the time we got back to the hotel the bread was so soggy from the onions we had to pick the wet bread away from the dry stuff🤮 Lesson learned...I will stay with my tried and true steak place next time!!

Good eats, cheap beer!

By Beatrice V |

I asked the locals where to go for the Philly Cheese experience and was directed here. I got here late on a Sunday, and although it was buys, the atmosphere was fairly dead ( most of the shops in the area were already closed). I got the Cheesesteak with onions and cheez-wiz (had NO idea this was a thing) and a couple of beers. Took a seat upstairs by a window and enjoyed watching the rain. I love that you can watch the cooks working, so many good-looking men, lol. Everyone was super nice. Not the cleanest place but as expected for the area. I will definitely be back here when in the area.

Unfortunately, he's making money off of people that he doesn't even like.

By FarAway08591844648 |

I use to recommend this place until I met the owner. I don't know if he's always been the way that he was during our encounter or if he's just gotten above himself over time, but his customer service skills were worst than his employees. He was rude to a kid who kindly mentioned that they'd forgotten an ingredient. Not only that, but he seems to stereotype people. We actually changed our minds and left. Never going back again...

One of the best!

By Kelly J |

Great place! After talking to locals, we were suggested to go to this place. So glad we did. Very helpful staff. Great food. They only accept Cash!

Thumbs Up!

By pschafe |

Enjoyed a Philly Cheese steak with some fixings which was great. Make sure you bring cash as they do not have credit. They do have a ATM.

Best hands down cheesesteak

By alex s |

Wha can you say about the best tasting cheesesteak. If you go make sure you get it with wiz, provolone does not bring out the flavors. The autographs around the building is great as well. Got lucky to eat upstairs if not it’s a to go spot. Btw they do not accept cc.

A place for good cheesesteaks

By foreverstudent |

Great Cheesesteak. We were lucky it’s not too crowded but seating is limited. Generous meat and mushrooms. Parking at the one way street for a fee.

Cheesesteak!

By Luis McArthur |

Excellent cheesesteaks.. This place is one of/the most favourite of my girlfriends favourite cheesesteak places and she is a local. I can say it was very tasty..

Best steaks and such a friendly atmosphere!

By Eva L |

You can tell there is pride in this establishment. The lines moved quickly. The staff was friendly, funny, and hospitable. The food was excellent. The upstairs was abuzz with many years of business captured in the wall art. And there was a gentleman there hustling to make sure each table was clean for the next customer to sit and enjoy their food. So polite he was. Will definitely be back!

First Time Philly Steak Sandwich

By Gracie72 |

Great sandwich but I would go for extra cheese next time. They have gluten free buns for an additional fee. They have a pickle bar. First Philly Cheesesteak

Best Cheesesteak Ever!

By Tina |

Amazing Cheesesteak! I don’t typically eat cheesesteaks, but when I tell you this is a must have, I’m serious. Truly the best ever and well worth the stop.

Very good without extra cheese

By sylvouz74 |

Very good, the simple Cheese steak is very good, many add extra cheese, I find it very good with the normal dose, payment only in cash, a machine is in the restaurant 😄

Cultural Institution

By Stan Tecza |

Got there at 10:30 before the Saturday 11AM open to beat the lines. Nobody was there so went to Ishkabibble's across the street for a few bites of a cheesesteak there first. More on that later. Anyways, a line started to form at Jim’s around 10:50 and we humored on as the number 3 in line. Place opened at 11. Orders 2 cheesesteaks with mushrooms, peppers and onions. One with Wiz and the other with American. Ate the wiz Sandy upstairs and it was delicious. That place makes solid cheesesteak. Line up front when we left was starting to get crazy.

Not in th Running

By Alex G |

I visited Jim's Steaks in Philly when i was their for my kids vacation to Sesame Street. Leaving I wanted dinner for me & my lady, I remembered that I had visited Geno's and Pat's on trips before & heard that Jim's was making a better Cheese Steak then them so i decided to check them out. Its Located on a very busy street (South Street) and you can expect people to be hanging around excluding in front of this establishment. I went in and ordered a pepper Cheese Steak The way they fix it. I thought my peppers would be chopped up it to the steak not just piled on top.I wanted Lettuce and Tomatoes the guy told me its a $1 extra each I was like really that pose to be free!!! I made a statement that you guys charge for everything. They wrapped my sub and I thought nothing of it anymore til i got home and the sub fell out of the paper from it be soaking wet from the peppers. The steak had no seasoning and was dry. It was one of the worst subs I ever had. I don't recommend Jim's to anyone until they make changes. Stick with your regular sub places you already attend.

Great Service

By Savvy Traveler |

Visited with our two daughters, 14 and 11 years old. Recommend by the Ritz Carlton. Staff made sure to operate the door and make sure people were socially distanced (very small place, and busy so this was necessary). Very popular with locals for grab and go. Glad we supported a local , black owned business instead of the more trendy, touristy spots. The ladies operating the counter were so sweet and the gentleman on the grill were working very hard moving the food out quickly. Great, authentic Philly Cheesesteaks!

Good Experience

By Jamie H |

My first visit to Philly…I had to get a true Philly Cheesesteak. Jim’s is in a good location and is fairly close to many other things to do. The staff is nice and the facility was very clean and comfortable. I had a cheesesteak with provolone, mushrooms and onions. While it was good, I wasn’t blown away. I am glad I made the visit. I will try another cheesesteak to compare. I would have no problem returning or recommending Jim’s.

Iconic diner for Philly Steak sandwich

By Sonrisa Dawn |

I’m a California girl, what do I know about how they’re supposed to taste!? All the locals pointed to this one. We arrived midweek noon thirty and found only 10-15 people in line. Large menu so I asked the young man in front what he was ordering. Cheese steak with whiz and grilled onions, only thing he’s ever even ordered. He got off the plane 3 hours ago and on his way to see his mom... took metro bus and walk to get here. First before mom... Well! That’s enough for me... I had what he had. Now I know what they should taste like. Next time I’d be tempted to add jalapeño to spice it up a bit. Whiz (think velveeta) like nacho cheese biynot spicy. We added a couple beers and split one. All out the door less than $20. I would return another time!

Cheesesteaks!

By Chris G |

Best cheesesteaks in Philly! I have tried Pat's, Geno's, etc and none compare to what I have had a Jim's. The line can be long, but it moves fast. Can't wait to go back.

Tremendous!

By TonyR1999 |

Every bit as good as all the reviews said and even worth queuing for half an hour to get to served! Recommended!

Philly day trip

By ocaug |

Took a day trip to Philly and stopped here after a recommendation from a friend. It was absolutely delicious. I got a cheesesteak with whiz & fried onions. I wish I would’ve gotten another to take home with me. Fast service and friendly staff. I’ll definitely be back.

Excellent Cheesesteak!

By Clemente71 |

Yet another stop on the Philly Cheesesteak tasting tour with this visit. Jim's by far uses the best quality meat. Staff is pretty impressive as they keep the line moving (and they are long lines) and you never have to repeat your order. Very tight quarters downstairs, but there is upstairs seating. I took the order to go so I can not comment on the space. Were missing fries from the menu which was kind of disappointing. Gone to five major Cheeseteak places and not certain if Jim's is the best. At the very least it is tied for the best with Tony Lukes. Definitely worth the visit. Take cash with you as this is the only form of payment that they accept.

Philadelphia specialty

By DramaQueen55 |

Someone on the plane told us about cheesesteaks so we had to give them a try. We picked Jim's as it was on our walking route and seemed to be the most well-known. The queue was out of the door which had to be a good sign! We didn't mind the wait - gave us a chance to soak up the atmosphere of the place, which was buzzing. We could see the size of the portions so decided to order just one between us for lunch. Glad we did - a huge amount of provolone cheese, raw tomato, fried minced steak and fried onions - great!

The best cheesesteak!!!!!!

By Jaskel08 |

We were told by multiple employees at the hotel we were staying at the Jim's had the best cheesesteak. So we went..... and it was amazing!!!! Newly renovated, there is a lot of seating upstairs. There was a long line but it moved fast. Definitely work going too! FYI: Jim's only takes cash.

Best Cheesesteak in Philly

By Terence T |

If you're in Philly you MUST stop at Jim's. Sometimes there is a wait and line but it moves fast and it's worth the wait.

Best in Philly...

By Kevin Gorman |

A Philadelphia classic cheesesteak joint. Whenever friends or family are in town we take a trip to South St to grab Jim's.

Good Cheese Steak

By David M |

When in Philly, we have to do cheese steak. Jim's was close to where we were and so decided to stop it. Line was long during the lunch rush, but if you go either before or after, not so much of a wait. Was great with whiz, onions and peppers. Would definitely do it again.

Delicious

By Lizzi583 |

My hubby and I stopped in on a visit to South Philly after seeing Jim's steaks on a television show. It was on our bucket list to try. The line was out the door but it went very fast. This place only accepts cash, which was a bummer but they did have an atm in the store for those who are "tourists" and didn't know. The employees were very friendly and efficent. The seating room upstairs was clean and the employee keeping everything in order was great! Very Friendly! Definitely the best cheese steak I've ever had. Highly Recommended! Oh and plenty of parking all around.

Bang for the buck💸💸

By Casper K |

Had a great experience at Jim’s South St! Nice sub—fresh, tasty, and exactly what we paid for. At $15, it was worth it. Delivery was impressively fast, and the food arrived hot and well-packed. The seating inside was clean and had a classic Philly vibe, perfect for a quick bite or casual hangout. Only downside was they only accept cash, which we weren’t prepared for—so make sure to bring some bills. Still, the friendly service and solid food made up for it. Would definitely go back for another cheesesteak or hoagie. Jim’s hits the spot if you’re craving a true Philly sub!👊🏽🤑🔥

Delicious!

By eabcfm13 |

Such a great spot for a cheesesteak, especially late night! We stopped in for a cheesesteak after a show around 10:30 PM, the line moved fast, the staff was friendly and the food was great. Definitely worth a stop if you are in Philly!

Still good!

By James.R |

They don't have the time to socialize! Line is too D** Long! We Drive or Bike every year form NYC. Never bad or cold Sandwich! (Pat's and Geno"s) Can't touch This!!!!!

“Simply” the best Cheesesteak ever.

By Brad M |

Had mine with provolone and grilled onions. The bun was the perfect fresh vessel. After waiting in line we carried them through the bowels of the building and up the steep stairs to simple stark seating on the second floor. With a light sprinkle of salt it was a taste of heaven.

Good Philly Steak Sandwhich

By buckeyetravel |

We stopped here on a business trip to the area and wanted one of the long standing shops. Jim's has indoor seating which was great for a winter time visit and the service and food were very good. The staff behind the counter was engaging and helpful and the food was very tasty. We all variants of the cheese steak and enjoyed them. Just wish they had some good fries to go with the cheese steaks! FYI-this is a cash only location.

Meat Me on South Street Jims

By 1234m |

I soooo missed this place while they were closed. It's always been one of my top 5 places for a cheesesteak. Being Philly born and raised that says a lot. I was not disappointed during my most recent visit. Staff is super. (They don't have an attitude like some other well-known tourist trap steak shops that serve mediocre meat on a roll). My status as a long-time fan remains. It's also nice to see a few iconic staples remain on South Street, as so much has changed, and Jim's is a welcome and familiar sight.

Funky, old school, efficient....DELICIOUS

By Spike5519 |

First trip to Philadelphia. Had to have a Philly Cheese Steak, right? Excursion downtown to South Street to Jim's. Let's just say, I wasn't disappointed! Efficient and interesting. Watching your meal prepared and interacting with the cook was great fun. The sandwich was all that it was advertised to be. If you're looking for the real deal and that old school ambience....before there was fast food, go to Jim's. About as authentic as you can get. Tables are upstairs, but there is a standup counter downstairs, if you choose, to stand and eat.

Great Philly

By Amy R |

Coming from Houston, getting a Philly was first on the list. Asked the front desk at the hotel for their favorite Philly and Jim’s was the answer. Now it’s my favorite, absolutely amazing and big.

Wouldn’t recommend

By Sam S |

Food was bland, there was not any type of seasoning or salt on the meat. The staff was really rude. Really disappointed as this was my first time trying an authentic Philly cheesesteak. Not worth the money.

Just meh

By Celeste G |

I am from New Orleans where we season our food. This sandwich was so bland, the meat was not seasoned. The Philly Cheesesteak in the food court of our local shopping mall tastes better.

Best steak house in Philly

By carmen l |

We were excited to learn that Jim's Steaks would deliver to our hotel through the dash app (I believe). I am not very big on steak sandwiches but it was delicious. Considering it was take out it was still pretty warm. We got it with american cheese but I here the whiz is better. Can't confirm. The steak was super juicy and would order it again. I hear the lines are very long there but worth the wait. I enjoyed it as takeout and would do so again.

Disappointed...

By Mykell |

I guess I was expecting way too much since visiting Philly, I was hoping the cheesesteak would be great. I got the regular cheese steak while my mom got the pepper steak. I tried the regular and for some reason, it's missing something. It's not hitting that spot when I eat cheese steak. I tried my mom's as well and still nothing. My sister got a different one and she said she had better steak somewhere else.

Do not like the chopped up meat

By markbkeller |

Just a personal preference, but Jim’s steaks are chopped up into small pieces. I prefer places like Steve’s, Geno’s and Pat’s who use quality meat. The service is not great as well.

THE place for an authentic cheesesteak!

By GoPlaces444899 |

First, this is a very casual place. You wait in line to order for eat in or take out. Make sure you have cash, because it’s all they take! We had the traditional “American wit” which is a cheesesteak with American cheese with fried onions. Amazing. That and a bag of Utz chips was lunch for two. Don’t be pressured into getting one “wit wiz” (cheese wiz”) unless you know you like cheese wiz. The place always seems to be crowded, so be prepared to stand in line. There is a pretty big dining room upstairs, you just can’t go up until you have your food. No saving seats! It’s worth the wait and the walk.

Iconic Philly Cheesesteak – A Hit with the Whole Family!

By David |

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - We stopped by Jim’s South Street for our first Philly cheesesteak and went with the classic Whiz Wit—absolutely delicious! The steak was juicy, the Cheese Whiz perfectly gooey, and the roll had the right amount of chew. Our teen loved the whole vibe—watching the food being made, the smell, the energy. The line moved fast, and the staff was super friendly. Great stop for families looking for a true Philly food experience. We’ll definitely be back!

The Best Philly Cheesteak in America!!!

By Angela P |

I was in philly for a family reunion and I'm from South Carolina so my cousins from New York and myself heard about 5 time Award Winner Jim's Steaks and just had to find out for ourselves. The line was wrapped around the building when we got there. They did not disappoint!! Everybody has to bow down to them!!! It is the best sandwich ever!!

Not worth the stop

By Gilbert H |

The steak had no seasoning or flavor—no noticeable salt, pepper, or spices. The sandwich was greasy and soggy, and it was cash-only. It's overrated and not worth the stop.

Best cheesesteak in Philly

By Jeff wagner |

Genos’ and Pats’ have nothing on Jim’s. Located on South ST., Jim’s steak has the best flavor. The other places are more of a tourist trap. Genuine Philly cheesesteak and the area around Jim’s is the best. Don’t waste your time at the other places. Get the real Philadelphia experience.

Fast paced Philly steajs

By jcdeligirl |

Old famous restaurant in the heart of South Street. Wait in line order your sandwich offered a few different ways....no fries no sides but they have it down to a science...cash only! Sandwiches were good but expected better. Going to the competition today...Gino’s and then Pats tomorrow. Will review and update.

A tourist attraction in its own right!

By Rob-vs-Food_SB |

Thank you Trip Advisor community for recommending this place. The queue was around the corner, but went quickly.

Bleh

By ShirleyWilloughbyOH |

After having a cheesesteak wit whiz there, I don't see what the excitement is all about. I got queasy from all of the grease afterwards. It's hot, crowded and seating is very close if you can find it. And it's not inexpensive. Even though most would say "well we have to try because we're in Philly" I'd save my $ and go elsewhere--and don't go to another cheesesteak place either.

Good cheesesteak

By travelbug |

I enjoyed my cheesesteak here but it isn’t the best to be had in the city. It’s Cash only which was a bummer.

Disappointed

By tnvolfam |

We heard such great things but were disappointed with the cheesesteak. Bun was good but meat was bland, cheese non-existent, and no mayo.

Big disappointment

By H M |

Our first choice was Angelo’s, but we found out they are not open on Mondays. We had the cheesesteak sandwiches and as some reviews listed it, it was tasteless. I completely disagree with the reviewers who said it is the best cheesesteaks in town, as I’ve had cheesesteak sandwiches from Jersey Mike’s that are a lot better than what I ate there. Very disappointing.

Cheesesteak!! 🤤

By Matthias K |

There it is - the infamous Philly Cheesesteak! 🤤 And oh my god are people passionate about which is the best place to have it in Philly. I liked the vibe and the Cheesesteak here but I do not dare to label a favourite as some friends will always be disappointed. 😂

Wading into the great debate

By Angus |

Very good indeed. The bun is top notch. A good zip to the whiz (you don’t use real cheese!!). Good onions and good mushrooms (an extra). Beer is available. It’s an old school place. Very good indeed. More locals and less tourists.

Excellent Cheesesteak

By Explore796204 |

Tried different places for cheesesteak, but this was the best - few tables but take it to to go and enjoy it in a park.

GREAT AUTHENTIC PHILLY CHEESTEAK

By Alyssa Byington |

excellent philly chessesteak and friendly atmosphere. little expensive, but you got a lot of food for your money. only downsides are the place was a little crowded and they only accept cash.

Great cheesesteaks

By B P |

Delicious cheesesteaks with mushrooms, onions and whizz. I think they’re giving more whizz than before. I think their cheesesteaks are the best in Philadelphia.

Mmmm Cheesesteak!

By Sandra M |

Upon a recommendation from a friend, we decided to try something other than Pat’s or Gino’s. And we were rewarded! There was a bit of a wait in line but once we got close enough to the grill we knew we wouldn’t be disappointed. The sliced ribeye was mouthwatering. After ordering at the grill and paying at the counter we took our food upstairs and easily found a table for two. And oh, the perfection! Just the right proportion of meat, grilled onion and cheese whiz. Delicious! This is not a fancy place and they only take cash. Sandwich and soda for two was under $25. They have a good selection of sodas and beer. I definitely would come back again!

Overrated

By Maryandra S |

The steak had no taste. No salt no pepper. Very oily and soggy sandwich. Cash only. Definitely overrated. It’s not worthed

Worth the (long) wait.

By FlyboyNYC123 |

The cheese wizz melts into the chopped Angus rib-eye. OMG. I've been comming here for I've a decade whenever in Philly. Drive by Geno's for the lights, but come here for the steaks. Extra onions for me. My mouth is watering....

Good, but meat needed more seasoning!

By Brandi T |

This was a very traditional cheesesteak joint! The vibe was great, and it is located in a cool area of South Street! The cheesesteak was good, but it lacked seasoning in the meat! Add some salt and pepper!

Meh

By Eric M |

This place came highly recommended and when we arrived there was a huge line, got me excited that we were about to have a great cheese steak. But out of the 4 cheesesteaks we had during our Philly trip this was by far the least flavorful. It wasn't bad, but I thought both Pat's and Delassandro's were much much better.

Best Cheesesteak In Philadelphia

By PastaMan123 |

I think everyone that's gone can agree that Jim Steaks has the best Cheesesteak in Philadelphia!! It tastes and smells delicious.

Great lunch

By Sam S |

My daughter goes to Moore college so we decided to drive to Jim South Street absolutely delicious. Nice big sandwich we split we had a plain cheesesteak with whiz absolutely delicious. The staff was wonderful very friendly. Would absolutely do it again and I recommend.

Classic

By marmarfrs |

Per my daughter she loved it. Meat and wit with mushrooms. The roll has enough texture on its own. Line moves fast. Cash only with ATM available inside. Around 4 stand up tables outside if you prefer not to dine inside.

Not Bad.

By zrib |

Jim’s sandwich was good, but the meat bordered on being too dry. Service was quick, helpful, and friendly. I have had better cheesesteak sandwiches in Philly

Whiz Wit’

By davyd83 |

On my first Philly trip, I took the advice of some Philly vets who said Jim’s was the place to go for the best Steak. They were right! I love to experience the neighborhoods when I visit the big cities and Jim’s was a great way to get introduced to South St. The staff was great and the sandwich even better!

Line long but quick!

By Barbara Y |

Outside in the cold but worth the wait for our cheesesteaks with the works! Quick service, great flavor - no wait for a seat upstairs.

Super Friendly Staff, Easy, Great Location

By Lorenzo8888 |

On our way to the airport we specifically stopped on South Street to get a Philly cheese steak. We had read the reviews and knew Jim's only took cash so it was smooth sailing all the way. We were glad they had strict rules implemented to be in compliance with Covid. The staff was super friendly. Additionally, they had loads of options with drinks. If you don't like steak, they have chicken as an option too. Be sure to tip a lot since these folks are working hard to keep the tradition going during these tumultuous times. Despite the heat, they all were smiling. Highly recommend.

Good cheesesteaks!

By Henry B |

My wife and I decided to skip the touristy Geno's or Pat's on the recommendation of family. We didn't have to deal with the traditional rudeness at those places. We placed our orders at the window with the cooks (great fun to watch them in action). We ordered one with cheese whiz and grilled onions and the other with provolone and grilled onions. We were skeptical-cheese whiz is like the most disgusting thing ever invented and when restaurants dump it cold onto nachos or anything else, it is just a gloppy, salty mess. However, used correctly on a cheesesteak as these folks do, is truly delicious. I am a convert!

Cold and dry. Disappointed

By Stephanie D |

We went there based on a locals recommendation but we were quite disappointed. My cheese was not melted, meat was cold and peppers added at the last minute so the flavor wasn’t interspersed. It was dry and not flavorful. Not greeted nicely which is fine because it can be what you expect in a famous place. And no sides which would be fine if the sandwich was delicious

Good cheese steak. A classic spot for one

By Rob Davey |

Coming from the UK, the Philly cheese steak is very infamous, and Jim’s is known as one of the best places to get one. I’ve been here twice (with 10 years between each visit) and they’re very enjoyable. The restaurant has a great vibe, with seating upstairs. I’ve not tried anything else on the menu. But the cheesesteak was very good. Whether it’s the best in Philly, that’s hard to say

Solid cheesteak, but underseasoned

By Jonathanjameslowry |

I went here with a few friends and was recommended this by locals. This was my first time in Philly, so I was excited to try a real cheesesteak. I ordered the cheesteak with onions and provolone. I don't like cheese whiz or American cheese unfortunately. The sandwich would have been an 8 or 9 out of 10 if it was just seasoned properly. I added salt myself but it took a lot to make me enjoy it which makes me think there was little salt in it. The bread was quite good, and I liked the onions. However, I personally really hate unseasoned red meat in particular, so the lack of salt brings down my rating greatly.

First time for Cheese Steaks

By departingcontestant |

my daughter insisted we go here for our cheese steak while we were visiting the sandwiches were great. My lovely wife chose provolone cheese and mushrooms (much to the chagrin of all in the party) and it was very good. the rest of us went local and man was it an amazing sandwhich. I had other people tell me to go to the "popular" places but I told my daughter she had one chance to sell me on the legend of the cheese steak and she did Phily proud(didi I mention they had a real good selection of local beers)

For me...Jim's is the only place to get a real Philly Cheese Steak

By ozoni |

Eat in or take out. Doesn't matter to me. I'm old school...give me a Jim's cheese steak with cheese whiz and grilled onions and a pile of napkins and I'm in nirvana.

Good meaty sandwich

By Jackjack706 |

Sandwiches had good meat but slightly overrated. Mushroom sandwich becomes soggy if you let it sit too long. We took it to go and didn't eat it till 1 5 min later and it soaked through paper. Would still recommend to try if never been there. Line moves fast.

long line but moved quickly

By Kris S |

Great experience. Line was long but moved quickly. We were looking for the best Philly Steak sandwich and it was good. Unfortunately we had a better one the night before somewhere else, where the bread was toasted. Still a fun place to eat.

Best cheesesteak

By CharlesGrose |

I love cheesesteaks, so while in Philadelphia, I just had to try several different places. Enjoying a cheesesteak at a Phillies game was fun, but without a doubt, Jim’s Steaks has the best cheesesteak I found during my trip. If you’re visiting Philadelphia, you must try Jim’s.

This is the spot!

By Khal3d81 |

I didn't want to go to the touristy area's... wanted something local which is what a local friend recommended... It was a fantastic lunch! quick service, delicious Cheesesteak!

The best Philly cheese steaks - EVER

By DannyBoy20 |

The best cheese steak house in Philly. Long queues but move quickly. Worth the wait and watching the team cook is a bonus. They need to open in London

Fun experience

By SeanPsyD |

When in Philly one needs to eat a cheesesteak so I reviewed the web for the best one and Jim's kept coming up. The atmosphere was neat as you snake your way through a line and then order your food to your liking. It was fast. Then you go upstairs to eat. The neighborhood was cute, unique, and busy. The food was great. I don't know if they are the best or not, but the sandwhich was excellent and I had no complaints. Just to remind myself for next time though; skip the mushrooms and maybe be daring and switch out the provolone for the famous "whiz"

heard about it but all hype

By EMORIN77 |

LONG line but went pretty fast. Workers were rude and not very friendly and pushed you on thru. Nothing special though as far as cheesesteaks go..had better ones outside of PA. Not worth the trip!

A must stop in Philly

By deb1175 |

Jim’s is a place that was recommended to us by locals. Now we actually drive out of our way on road trips to stop at Jim’s for lunch. If you get there early, there is not much of a line, and street parking is plentiful. Bring cash, or use the ATM on site. There is also a Bank if America ATM right down South Street. We get the whiz and provolone with onion. Delicious!

Best Philly cheesesteak sandwhich!

By savvyjwtravler |

First time to Philly so obvious had to have Philly cheese steaks. We were on the hunt for the best one and out of 4 places we tried, Jim’s was the best (get it with onions and whiz cheese) ! To beat the lines, come during weekday from 3-5 pm.

Try the rest, then come to Jim’s!!! FIVE CLAWS UP!!!!! Thanks for reading my review and PLEASE see the photos I took. Peace - Joe G. Bear

Best Cheesesteak and Surprisingly Good Hoagies

By Tim S |

As most know who frequent Jim’s, they have good cheesesteaks with fresh beef. However, I want to talk about their hoagies. Some of the best prices around for an Italian Hoagie, and it comes loaded with everything. It’s hard deciding which way to go! Remember to bring cash (cash only!)

Flew 11 steaks to Nevada

By Maya N |

My dad didn't want to give me a lift till I said I was buying 11... 1 for his bribe of course. I moved to Nevada and things just ain't the same, bread is horrible due to the climate and elevation. People who never had a real cheesesteak opening spots... smh. So when I came home I had to stop by. The scent of Black Angus is still lofting around my nose making me hungry... its only been 4 days and I've got 2 left for myself. P.s. they freeze very well, and the crew offered to ship them out next time. Great staff as always! Also they taste best with American cheese, caramelized onions, salt, pepper, and ketchup 😋 😋😋💣💥

Would have been perfect if their staff wasn't so rude

We had a few people refer us here for "the best cheesesteak in Philly". This was our third attempt (the first two were outright awful) and I had high hopes. The cheesesteak itself was delicious. I got it just with the wiz and mushrooms. My husband and I shared it (to accommodate multiple cheesteaks throughout the trip) and we both agreed it had been the best we ate the entire trip. (He gave it a 7, I gave it an 8) However, the staff should really remember they are in the service industry. It's a touristy place, on a touristy street - they'll get tourists. Tourists usually don't know how places operate, and a simple comment explaining should suffice. Instead, it was a short "Next." and I looked at the menu and then back to him to begin ordering when the cook stopped what he was doing, looked at me in the eye and yelled "NEXT." I apologized, ordered and moved out of his miserable way. I heard him do the same with the folks behind me. It's noisy in there, but it wasn't busy. (I'm a bartender, I know busy. There were, tops, 4 people in line) A little patience, and maybe an attitude adjustment would have me raving about this place. I will go back, but if that guy is working, I'll probably send my husband in next time.

Authentic Philly Cheesesteak

Great spot, never disappoints! Wait time and long lines are worth the wait. Food is delish and staff are quick and accommodating. Seating area is small and tight. But you can grab it to go. Cash only though

Philadelphia Airport Layover Treat

By dscottw2 |

On my way back from Europe, I had a layover in Philadelphia. Just enough time for a Jim's South St Famous Cheesesteak. I ate at the Philly airport location. The cheesesteak was excellent and a real treat before flying home to Florida. Will definitely be back when in Philadelphia. When in Philly you have to have a quality cheesesteak and you cannot have a better cheesesteak than Jim's.

Good cheesesteaks

By UMTerpVirginia |

My family ate cheesesteaks at Jim's and enjoyed them. We sat upstairs and there was plenty of room between tables on a Thursday evening. We waiting in line about 15 - 20 minutes (with masks on) and it was well worth it. Recommend.

Drove 4 hours just for this

By Carlos Y |

My friend and I drove 4 hours from Virginia just to try a philly cheese steak. It was a spontaneous trip we decided to do just because I was hungry for one. We left at 8:30pm and got there right before closing. It was my first time driving in a big city with 3 lanes of traffic and I was terrified but it was all worth it. I even got a toll violation because I had no clue how those worked. We ordered a classic and it was the best cheese steak I have ever had. The staff was very friendly and i’m so glad we came. Definitely will come back!

Not bad but not good

By Esteban |

There’s a lot of hype for the food of this place but i don’t see why... when I arrived there was a huge line, I thought it was bc the food was really good but as soon as I tried the one I ordered I realized the Philly cheese stake is not flavorful at all! I mean it’s not awful but certainly not good either.
