Don't Judge By the Outside

By Gma58 |

This is not a place you would drive by and say oh, let's eat there. We looked up on yelp & it had great rating. As we pulled up we questioned, but walked in and the place was packed. There were four of us for breakfast and we all ordered different items. We were happy with all. You order at counter & they bring food to the table. You refill your drinks. I would recommend. I want to try their other menu items.

Great Comfort Food and Informal Atmosphere

By filtex |

Met a friend, who is a regular, at John's for breakfast. The food was delicious, but not for someone who wants a healthy choice breakfast. I had the breakfast special of 2 eggs, sausage (could have gotten bacon or ham), hash browns, biscuits (or toast) and coffee for $6.20. Every thing was tasty and well prepared. My friend had the pancakes which he said are the best he has ever eaten. John's clearly is a popular place with lots of regular customers, but very welcoming to newcomers. If I lived in Dallas, would make this a regular dinning spot.

Great spot for a good meal reasonably price

By Cathy M |

Great local spot for home cooking. Menu has a wide variety and even has breakfast all day. We had the daily lunch special of hamburger steak, mashed potatoes and green beans. Delicious!!

Great breakfast

Diner food. Breakfasts are amazing. Put your diet on hold and enjoy a great bacon and egg breakfast, with gravy and biscuits.

Great food, little pricey

By CoxFamily5 |

This cafe has great home-cooked food, but was kinda pricey. We decided not to go to Waffle House for brunch when we heard this place was around the corner on Greenville in Dallas. Would have given it an Excellent rating if the price was right. $30 for two to eat quick diner food was a little too much. If your not worried about the cost, you will love it.

This is where you can get a good old fashioned breakfast

By 46749 |

There are not too many of these places left where you can get old fashioned breakfast and it was really reasonably priced. We were delighted with this choice for breakfast. We are sure to do this again.

Great Breakfast Experience . . .

By MeForLA |

The moment you walk into this diner you know your going to have a great breakfast experience. The place was full, all the tables taken, and there was a line to order at the counter, but, don't worry the line moves fast and somehow there's always a place to sit after you order. The owner is in the kitchen making sure every plate comes out perfectly. We ordered the greek omelet, the breakfast special, and a short stack of pancakes. I usually judge a breakfast spot by their pancakes and this place is a winner for excellent pancakes. The greek omelet was not what i'd expected, but, still, was good. Next time I think I'll order the breakfast special, which is eggs, hashbrowns, bacon or sausage, and share an order of pancakes! Oh, and you get a lot for your dollar here without compromising the quality and love that goes into the food!

Yum yum

The two of us had a scrumptious breakfast. Comments others had noted on TripAdvisor suggested trying the combo. Very good! We went on a Friday morning 8am. No wait. Quick service. Will go back!

Average and pricey breakfast

By a-travelin-foodie |

Not sure what the fuss is about. Average pancakes (that don't come with butter) and scrambled eggs. Average huevos rancheros (very liquidy beans with very liquidy but good homemade salsa), decent bacon, average coffee. Got way way too crowded after we sat down when it was less than half full - by 9:30am all tables filled up with 15 people waiting in line (inside) to order. Several people in line didn't wear masks (mask sign on door).

100 stars.

I came across this little quaint restaurant by accident. I worked nearby and decided to come in one morning for breakfast. Super fast service, superb waitstaff, friendly, and delicious food. Fresh made to order food. I haven't left a crumb on my plate. John biscuits will give Paula Deen a run for hers. John does everything it all. Cooks, serve, he visits with you and he remembers when you come back. It's the best home cooking I have had in my life, aside from the ones I make! I highly recommend this restaurant. John, please keep the great. You love what you do and it shows. See you soon.

Good family restaurant

Located on lower Greenville in a nondescript shopping center on the right-hand side my very good breakfast and my granddaughter got her Mickey Mouse pancakes they are very accommodating clean restaurant and very friendly employees need to go back for lunch open for us

Delicious hash browns and pancakes!

By joeybagz312 |

This place was no frills, easy to order quick breakfast. Order it up, sit down and it gets brought to you quickly. The hot tea and coffee were perfect, hashbrowns some of the best I have ever tasted, perfect mix of crispy yet tender potatoes, delicious pancakes and eggs, and rich chocolate milk all for a reasonable price. It didn't seem to be in the best part of town. As we drove through the neighborhoods to get there, we felt like we were back home in parts of Baltimore city. Definitely worth a trip, we would go back in a heartbeat.

Best Diner Arounc!

This totally delivers. It has the best breakfast special. It was perfect to split the Breakfast Special and the Pancakes with a friend. The price is dynamite!!!

A Delightful Surprise

By Rhys M |

When I pulled up to John's Cafe, I wasn't sure what to expect. It's in the middle of a pretty standard shopping center and didn't look like anything special. When I walked in, I noticed that the walls were lined with newspaper articles and photographs from the cafe's decades of business. John himself greeted me at the counter and I immediately felt like a regular, even though this was my first visit. I ordered the special; it's my standard breakfast and I was HIGHLY impressed! The hash browns were obviously freshly cut, the biscuits were homemade, my eggs were perfectly prepared, and the bacon was flavorful. It's one of the best local eats I've ever had in Dallas and I'll be stopping here ANY time I visit the city. There's so much more I want to try!

Great breakfast

By Bob H |

The food here was very good. Toast is grilled and hashbrowns are Greek style with onions. Meats were excellent. Only problem I saw was it was a little overpriced. $10.69 for two eggs, hash browns, meat and toast with ice tea.

A classic

great breakfast and a fun atmosphere. many different breakfast combinations, and good coffee, in a fun sometimes loud venue.

One of the best local joints for very solid, straightforward food in dallas. Unassuming gem hiding on lower greenville.

Everybody treated like a regular...........

I've eaten at John's regularly since 1976! John and group will fix your food any way you want it. BLT on a bun instead of toast, no problem. Hamburger steak without the cooked onions but with the gravy, no problem. Club sandwich with only two to pieces of untoasted white bread, no problem. If you can say it, they will fix it! Parking tip: It's available on both sides of Greenville Ave, north of cafe and across Greenville Ave on north side of Lewis St. (when const. is finished). Breakfast group? John let's you bunch-up tables.

We were looking for a new place to eat breakfast while in Dallas & stumbled on John's Cafe. Best Migas I've had..generous portion of scrambled eggs, onions, cheddar, jalapenos & tortilla strips served up with refried beans & warm corn tortillas. Biscuits are delicious too. Highly recommend!

Great for The Price

By carlito631 |

I love the breakfast special here. But all their food is good Very reasonable on price. Only issue very tight parking. A lot of neighborhood clientele frequent here.

Classic diner

By SeriousSummer |

It's a diner, and it's a pretty good one. If you understand that then you'll be happy. If you expect something fancier, then you won't.

Killer BREAKFAST!

Favorite place for breakfast in Dallas

By cupcake2 |

You won't be disappointed if you choose John's for your source for breakfast. Don't be put off by the long line you may encounter. The system for ordering food before choosing a table or booth really works well. There are so many things to like about this place - the food, the people who work there, the repeat customers, the value, and high on the list are the hash brown potatoes and the salsa. Going to John's is one of the things I miss most during this COVID-19 pandemic.

If you need breakfast, they have it.

By Gpamp |

Straightforward, but so good. Whether you've had a long night of drinking, or you're just hungry, if you need eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes, etc. this is the place. I've only had one experience on the negative side (where the Hispanic lady running the register told me it was too late in the day to order pancakes, then served some, herself, to a Spanish family next to us). Other than that, delicious and well priced.

Hidden Gem on "Lowest" Greenville Avenue

By valueqwest |

We recently visited John's Cafe for the first time at its new location on " Lowest" Greenville Avenue (Just north of Ross Avenue). As frequent patrons of the old "Lower" Greenville (Vickery Place) location, we found a lot was familiar, and delightful. The setup is virtually the same low-key layout we came to love: booth seating on the sides and the iconic middle tables where we could frequently find copies of the daily newspaper being perused by locals and regulars over eggs, biscuits, pancakes and coffee. Even the menu boards are the old classics, though they seem to have a few new entries. We ate around lunchtime but we had breakfast, the John's mainstay, including a stack of probably the best pancakes we have eaten, along with eggs, toast, bacon and coffee. We did miss the gravy which we recall as being delicious, but we will have to come by earlier next time, as our visit was early afternoon. Service was fantastic and we were able to meet John's daughter at the counter and John himself took the time to refill our coffee mugs and renew acquaintances. We enjoyed the pictures which adorned the walls showing the old location and the new. Everything was in place except the classic sign from the old location, but it lives on inside the store and on their website. If you miss the iconic neighborhood diner or just want a great meal in a simple setting among old friends and new neighbors, and a great value, John's is the ticket..

Great food!

By liv2vacation |

My husband and I were visiting Dallas and looking for a place to have lunch. Glad we found Johns! Our food was fantastic! I had a burger and fries and my husband had the hot roast beef and mashed potatoes. I saw a woman having a greek salad and may try that next time. We will definitely be back when we come to Dallas again!

John's cafe-where have you been all my life?

By Mishmash0718 |

Seriously, I've lived in Dallas since 2002 and never really heard of John's Cafe. I remember John's being on upper Greenville and thinking we should try it, but then they closed and we forgot about it. Heard someone at work mention it and by chance I had to go to Firestone and John's is across the street. We went for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Thank goodness we were early, it was pretty packed. Anyway, we ordered breakfast and it was the best I have had here. Seriously. The biscuits are to die for. The bacon and toast are amazing. I made a bacon egg sandwich that I could do eat there every week. We will be back!!!

A trip to the 1970's

By Meeae J |

If you like the red vinyl good old diner, this place is a must visit. Time has stopped in this place and the atmosphere is great. Sunday morning at 1030am and it's jam packed with old grandmas and grandpas sitting beside hipsters and couples enjoying the great food. Try out the philly steak omelette or the breakfast special.

Best Breakfast in Town

By jcrewse |

John’s is by far the best breakfast spot in town. My go to is the Migas breakfast special, with a side of hash browns with jalapeño. It’s more than I can/should eat (large portions), but I can’t help myself because they are both so good. I also highly recommend the biscuits and pancakes, if migas are not for you. Everything here is homemade and delicious. This place is not fancy and probably best described as a whole in the wall, but if you try it, you will become a regular - it’s literally addictive. The pot roast lunch special is also excellent (in addition to the burger, gyro, etc.). This place is special.

Down home great breakfast and lunch

By She977 |

Order at the counter kind of place. Grab a booth or community table. The pancakes are over the top and the hash browns are made from real potatoes. I order my hash browns crispy with grilled jalapeños and onions on top. John, the owner of this historic eating place is always at the counter. Lots of regular local customers make for a community feel in the place. Prices are extremely reasonable.

Awesome Place. Little Cafe/Diner

By Scott Howell |

Want Simple? Local? Neighborhood? This is it. Great for Breakfast and Sandwich / Burger lunches. I’ve been meaning to write a review about this place for a while, if you want to great little café stuck in a strip mall, this place is it. Ive eaten here a dozen times at least. Food is always fresh and really good. Killer breakfast and great little cheeseburger. Its family owned and just a great little local spot. Highly recommend.

Old Style Neighborhood Breakfast Place

By Breton |

If you want a great place for breakfast in a restaurant like there used to be in every town that was reasonable and the locals went there with kids. John's Cafe is just the place. Imagine, breakfast with eggs, bacon, hash browns for just $7.95. Bacon was delicious. Coffee is wonderful. It is a place where the local police eat too! Can't go wrong.

Best Breakfast Cafe

By RonnyC2723 |

John's Cafe has been a popular family owned breakfast and lunch cafe for decades. It's always crowded with locals who love to eat and discuss politics or the weather. The food is great and service is fast. Pictures on the wall describe the popularity of thos legendary cafe. One vist and you're hooked.

Great Breakfast Place in Dallas

My husband and I really enjoyed our breakfast. He had the Breakfast Special and I had the Breakfast Burrito. The food was very well prepared and the potions were more than we could eat. I highly recommend this place. It's was a very pleasant surprise.

Know the Drill

By Oxford1809 |

John’s is located in a strip mall on Greenville Ave., and really doesn’t not standout, except that when you enter you realize it has a large, very loyal clientele. Fortunately, we were with friends, who guided us through the process of ordering first, getting your coffee and then moving off to the side to wait for a table. While the café is not large, the turnover (even on a Sunday morning) is fairly quick so long as the line is reasonable. Breakfast fare is pretty standard, portions are large, prices reasonable. Not a brunch place, John’s just has the basics; the food is good; and you go away satisfied ready to get on with your day. Only complaint is the coffee is weak, but there are free refills.

Great Diner!

By dlakeDallas_TX |

I love this restaurant! It exudes the best of Lakewood/East Dallas: families, truckers, bands, hippies, salesmen, older folks, just folks. And the food is better than you would expect. I've never found a better burger and fries -- and I go there almost every Friday to enjoy them. Their breakfast is so satisfying -- I would recommend John's over any brunch or breakfast place in Dallas. In fact, I would rather go to John's on Mother's Day, than any fancy hotel brunch restaurant in the city. And I'm NOT a hippie!! I love the food--always tasty. I love John's daughter. I love JOHN!! My FAVORITE neighborhood restaurant, since 1986.

BEST BREAKFAST IN DALLAS!

By Jennifer S |

We LOVE John's Cafe for breakfast! I have not eaten here for lunch but that is supposed to be good, too. We've been going to John's since about 2004. The pancakes are incredible. The "special breakfast" is eggs any way, bacon or sausage, hash browns, and toast or biscuits (HINT: GET THE BISCUITS!) The bacon is always crispy. The biscuits are not yeast biscuits, but are light and flaky. Their gravy is very good. I've been all over Dallas to all types of breakfast places, and this is our favorite. And the special breakfast is under $7.00 for a big plate of food. The place has a neighborhood vibe and culture - John just celebrated 40 years in business last week. Don't be surprised if the regulars walk up and serve you coffee as they're getting some, or if someone strikes up a conversation. The only drawback: on the weekends this place gets very BUSY. Try and get there before 9 a.m. You will be waiting for a table and your food for up to 30 minutes (but it is worth it!) There are many booths, with long tables in the middle but you might be sitting at a table with some people you don't know. That's the culture of the place and the regulars are used to it. Go on a weekday if you can. I live close by, so I often call ahead and get a to go order. So if you live close by that's an option. Just know that when you pick it up, you don't have to wait in the long line. Just bypass it and walk right up to the register and tell them you have to go (I made that mistake once!) They don't want your food getting cold and neither do you. I take my kids (7 and 4) and they love John's. They love how John yells your number out when your food is ready (they do bring it to you) and that they make Mouse faces on the pancakes that my kids get. If you are not used to "urban" living, the location might put you off. I've seen a homeless guy or two walking around outside before. But I've never felt unsafe in the restaurant.

Really good breakfast

By WednesdayNightGirl |

My girlfriend and I struck out to try a new spot for breakfast last week. We decided on John's Cafe, which was listed HERE as a great spot. We live northeast of Dallas about 45 minutes and drove into town for the day, and started at John's. The storefront is underwhelming to say the least (maybe off-putting!), but we were up for the challenge. Once inside, it was neat, clean and smelled delicious! The order of business is to walk up to the counter to order and pay, then be seated and have your breakfast delivered to you. They ask when you walk up if it's your first time, and if so, they tell you exactly where to find everything you'll need. Very friendly folks. The food was delicious! I ordered a short stack of pancakes and bacon, while my friend ordered French toast and ham. The pancakes were really really good -- maybe a hint of malt in them??? Something special, anyway. And the French toast was served with powdered sugar and cinnamon. It was definitely worth the drive. AND while we were there, we spotted the local newspaper and found some great resale and vintage shops to hit on the way home!

Best neighborhood cafe.

Great place for breakfast and lunch and just old style comfort food. They have a great greek salad and gyros.
