Really good, authentic pub food, lively atmosphere

By Badforever |

We came on a Saturday night, early November, without a reservation, and were seated immediately. The place was busy. There is a lively bar area with many sports on various tv's. Our server, Pilar, was friendly and efficient. We ordered one beet salad and one chicken curry meal. Both were really good. The curry was a nice spice and quite tasty. A great meal.

Lunch with typical Irish hospitality

By Escape-overseas |

Stopped by for a light lunch - good service, tasty food, friendly atmosphere. Just what we expected.

Come for a drink and best fish chowder in the city!

By Jules T |

We're fairly local so we've been to Foley's quite a few times. Stopped in on Saturday night specifically because I wanted the fish chowder. Wow that chowder is better than anyone else's that I can think of! It comes with fabulous brown bread/butter that unfortunately was a bit stale on this visit. Hubs got a panini w/fries and a side of curry sauce for the fries. That was pretty meh - so he would not order that again ... the curry sauce is really thin/watery so was not a good curry "dipping sauce" that you'd get in a Celtic pub. Drinks were good ... I can appreciate for a pub they have really good wine options and of course, the Guinness is always grand. The best thing about this pub is service at the bar. I've had the same bartenders a few times and they are awesome. Working very hard to keep everyone's drinks topped up.

Yup, solid

Comfort food, great service and clean, well run. Would go back, for sure. It is popular, busy and has a hum to it. The building itself is great...high ceilings and well laid out. Great beer selection...worth a visit ...no reservations.

Mediocre food

By ASD5014HO |

Traveling from Europe, we (five people) were there for our last night in San Francisco hoping to have a nice farewell dinner. We were indeed very disappointed, the food was of poor quality, the stewed lamb very hard, the place too noisy and not very clean, the price ridiculously high. Stay away!

Last Night in San Fran!!!!

By Jim H |

Go here for great food and service. Ms. Stacy was outstanding.... Fast, fast , fast, very polite, and courteous.... We had traveled to Eureka for a few days with my father in law to visit his home and place where he grew up. Go to Eureka!!! Back to Johnny Foley's, very fun place with lots to see on the walls.(sports, art, etc)Food was great. Fish and chips were outstanding. Crab cakes, almond Salmon, and even Curry Chicken were great.... Go when in the Union Square area!!!!

Rude server and an uncomfortable experience

By Martin S |

We had been in this bar several times and found the staff to be very friendly until this one evening, we had a few beers and it was time to get the bill, we paid and gave a tip, server went away, 2 minutes later came back and demanded we give him a bigger tip for the (crap service) he had given us. He made us feel so uncomfortable and virtually demanded more money by intimidation. Feel so sorry for the other staff who were superb the other times we were there (barman with beard and the young lady server with the nose ring) We will NOT be going again. If you go, avoid the server with the tattoos on his neck,( vial, rude and intimidating man) He should be disciplined or even better loose his job

Nice place

By Alex |

I liked this place, really. Very tasty cuisine, nice wine. Our waitress was very friendly and competent. She recommended us national meal and we were satisfied. Restaurant has a bar and live music. Good working time. Nice location.

Visitors from UK

Johnny Foleys Irish Bar is what it says it is. Typical pub with good choice of meals. Ate there twice at night and no complaints, food came quickly after it was ordered and reasonable selection of beers on draft. If that’s the type of meal you like then give it a go. Only one small concern was it was quite dark and the couple on the table next to us were using the lights on their phones to be able to read the menu!

Guinness and Black Bush? Slante!

By brd721 |

The Irish senses were really peaked on Saturday night in SF at Johnny Foley’s. Great food, live music and of course Guinness and Bushmills!

Great Irish Pub in the heart of San Francisco

By Angela Turner |

Great Irish Pub in a great location. Close to everything. Pretty loud with plenty of music by the band and people drinking and having a good time. Decent service. The waitress needed to check on us a bit more and not super friendly. The Corn Beef and Cabbage was the best I have ever had. Huge potions with tons of corn beef, cabbage mashed potatoes and little new potatoes. Definitely more than one person can eat. Great sauce on the dish as well. The fish and chips were crispy and fresh. The fries great. Not to of the skinny fries. Great batter on the fish. The lamb shank meal was fall of the bone tender. A great value for the price. Overall, a great experience.

Nothing was too much trouble

By Cheree D |

We met here for lunch for six people. We were given a choice of where we sat and were seated straight away. The hostess was wonderful, our servers were wonderful, the food was wonderful and overall, it was a really enjoyable experience.

Great Irish Pub

By Jane M |

Great Irish pub with friendly staff and amazing food - cottage pie and fish and chips delicious. Only negative was it was very very noisy

Zero Atmosphere

By Lambretta101 |

Uninspired ‘Irish’ bar with zero atmosphere. The location is good and the beer cold. Boring to say the least.

Drink, food and chat

By gotravel |

A lively fab place to meet people have a drink and good food. We visited Johnny Foleys several times both with teenager kids and as couples. Every visit was memorable. Would definitely return.

An Irish gem in the heart of downtown SF!

By Cynfidel |

The food was incredible, the bartender was super friendly, and the service was fast. We went in thinking this was just another Irish pub and walked out with full tummies of gourmet proportions, and new friends. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great meal, good company and caring staff.

Nice spot for a beer and fish & chips!

By Gtelivwa |

Very friendly wait staff and a relaxing atmosphere. The fish & chips was quite good and came with mushy peas, which is not all that common. Price was reasonable compared to other places in downtown San Francisco. Well worth a visit!

Badly cooked food

By EV |

The cook is clueless about Irish food and other kinds as well. Fish smell in the air and lot of noise.

If you're irish, and homesick, go here.

By mike m |

Got a good pint of guinness here for just under 10 dollars, and just happened to get a good bit of banter from the staff.. Can't really ask for more when you're far from home.

Give this a miss

By Pa C |

we had a meal here recently. The food was just about average, certainly nothing special. The Guinness, for an Irish bar was horrible. I asked for a half pint and was brought a pint. When I pointed this out to the waitress she just ignored me and walked away. I was charged the full price for a pint - even though I could not finish it. The waitress was so unpleasent and annoying that we refused to give her a tip. A completely unenjoyable night

Nice local place

By DrNo8909 |

Good food and good service! Fun place but not if you want a quiet conversation!! Nice bar area and fun pub atmosphere!

Noisy and hot, but good pub food.

By JELGoh |

My family and I recently went for dinner at Johnny Foley's as it was directly next to our hotel. We arrived at about 7pm, but surprisingly, we were seated quite promptly (given there were many people there to watch a game). It was very noisy. We had the grilled country pork chop, Irish lamb stew and lamb shank, all of which were served pretty quickly and were delicious. The tables were gently lit by candlelight. The only con was that the pub was a little stuffy and hot! The toilet facilities were clean. We were in and out within 1 hour. All in all, it was a reasonable dining experience. Perhaps might be better to try it when there isn't a game on.

Best Irish Coffee in town

By RoamingNomad1 |

If you are in need of a real pick me up then go here. The irish coffees are in my opinion are awesome - albeit a little expensive, but well worth it. Great service and atmosphere with attentive staff. Highly reccommended.

Great place

By 311ATINA |

This bar is always buzzing, great place. Food is delicious and has great options. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Will definitely call again for drinks and dinner.

A great pub with a great family feeling.

By Richard W |

Covid really blasted many great establishments, yet Johnny Foley's Irish House has managed to open again while retaining its greatness. The staff checks everyone for vaccinations and take Covid precautions seriously-which I appreciate. Some of their classic ales ( Boddingtons) are not available due to supply issues and distributor issues. However, the knowledgeable bar staff know their brands and will get you the closest thing to what you want! This is a fun place and they hope to bring back live music. The food is good, the atmosphere is traditional pub and friendly. I highly recommend going to this local gem for a pint, or more!

Must be run by the tinkers!

By foghornleghorn68 |

Enjoyed a nice meal in Nob Hill so decided to polish things off with a nightcap at this well advertised venue. A warm evening but the stench of stale urine as we trotted through the tenderloin was somewhat overwhelming. But we pressed onward at the prospect of a convivial evening with decent pints at Johnny Foley's. Unfortunately the stench of stale vinegar (fish/chip brigade) greeted us coupled with lazy bar staff and an atmosphere similar to a tinkers wedding. Couldn't get a pint despite numerous efforts and not having a fine pair of lungs to shout the order above the din, decided to run the gamut of the discourteous bouncers prior to ubering it home.

Overall very good!

By MeeShellMidwifeRN |

This place has a great atmosphere- cool pub vibe. The cocktails were divine even though specialty focus is on Whiskey and Beer. I ordered the corned beef and cabbage and the meat was tough and over cooked, the server graciously took it back and replaced the meal without question. I ended up with Fish & Chips that were perfectly prepared and quite delicious! I would go back again!

Grab a Guinness in the middle of your next shopping spree

By 328Myrtis |

We had just finished an arduous search for a new watch in the Union Square area. We both stopped when we saw the sign: "Guinness on Tap". Of course, it was already noon, so we also ordered lunch. Great fish and chips and superb Dungeness crab cakes. We found out this place has been in the same place for 20 years, but we had never noticed it. The decor is pleasantly dark and pub-like.

Best fish and chips paired with great service!

By KZB |

Immer ausgezeichnet, der Service und mein Lieblingsgericht: fish and chips! Always a treat, great service and excellent fish and chips!

Ok place with the most arrogant service

By Henrik P |

So arrogant service from the bartender in green glasses. No thank You. No smile. Nothing . Feels like the guests disturbes him

Nice Irish Pub

By mshapiro99 |

Generally, I don't get excited about Irish pub food. I'll usually look for just about any other option to explore different cuisines ... but this restaurant was close to our hotel and we were too tired to walk around to look for something else. We were seated and then greeted by Maria, the friendly and efficient server, who moved us through the meal at our own pace but in a way that turned the table over fairly quickly. We enjoyed our burgers and fries, and a nice glass of California syrah. If you like Irish cuisine, there are lots of "prepared with Guinness" meals on the menu from which to select.

Disappointed with service

By Carol J |

Not a welcoming place for an Irish Pub. We went in and were told we were first on the list to be seated. After watching another group be seated first, I was told that they had to be seated at a larger table of four however, our table size was no different than others that had 4 in their party. We also were seated in the bar area rather than at a table. To top it off, our waitress wandered around helping others before finally stopping at our table. She never asked if we wanted to order food (another indication that we were in the bar area) and had to have the manager take our order and get us more drinks. We were just visiting SF but not some place that I would recommend.

You can’t go wrong at this charming restaurant

By Frank M |

Perfect pre-theatre place to eat. Near Union Square and shopping. I had the steak and onions with a pint. Great pub decor with famous Irish portraits lining the wall. My server had me out in time to catch my curtain time.

Mahone lemonade

By Hendoo |

Well, there’s nothing like visiting a pub to quench the thirst while holiday shopping and then staying for 3 hours! Better yet, having the bartenders add your newly created drink to the menu. What can I say, this place is terrible fun. Our party had to visit the establishment 3 times over 2 days during our holiday travel. A true Irish pub feel with fun bartenders and friendly guests. When visiting, ask for a Mahone lemonade (Irish lemonade). It’s very quenching and let’s you escape without increasing the gravitational effects of other cocktails. Cheers

Bar staff rude and tell you to tip.

By marccee |

I visited here with a few business colleagues from Scotland as we were visiting Semicon west at the Moscow centre. We ended up in foleys or the piano bar downstairs. What I noticed was when we ordered our first round it was one price but the same round next time was more expensive. Bar staff point out at every drink you get tipping not included. Our average round was around between $60-$80 while ordering our drinks at the bar. We left $5 per round which is more than satisfactory but the bar staff insisted its 20% $12-$16 per round! The service wasnt anything special and I was getting the round at the bar and drinking at a bar. I spoke to the 2 little Mexican looking dudes who serve at the bar every night in the piano bar and because we only tipped $5 they ignored us and served everyone else before us. Even when no one was being served they then said you guys dont look after the bar staff the staff wont look after you. After getting another round of drinks one drink was wrong. We said to the mexican looking bar staff this isnt the correct drink and he said yes he knows look after me I'll look after you. So basically made a drink wrong because we only tipped $5 for 6-7 drinks. The only thing decent in here is the food. The piano guys always say if you want a song played you need to tip once again it starts at $5. In general this bars ok for music in piano bar but it's over priced lots of flys and rude rude staff and sticky floors. 2 star is for the food

NICE PLACE

By Bruce W |

We were there this past weekend and enjoyed the food & service. The smoked salmon in particular was excellent and Kelly our server was fantastic. Highly recommend

Excellent Spot. Buzzy happy atmosphere

By Redpinkrose |

Excellent. Top class service. Freshly cooked tasty food, and the best cup of black tea in San Fran! We had ribs and vegetarian panini. Both delicious

Delicious, freshly prepared food

By Jay J |

This is not your average pub. My friend and I were staying at a nearby hotel and just happened to stop in. The atmosphere was enjoyable. The servers were attentive and pleasant. The food was served in generous portions that were freshly made and delicious. I had the best made-to-order vegetable stew I have ever had - a light broth, with an abundance of fresh vegetables, like brussels sprouts, Portobello mushrooms, and barley, garnished in the center with a mountain of mashed potatoes, tee-peed by a generous portion of tender asparagus spears. But I didn’t stop there. For dessert I indulged in their freshly baked warm granny smith apple tart- amazing! I would make the trip to San Francisco just to visit Johnny Foley’s.

Great steak !

By tcasLondon |

Seven of us decided to visit this restaurant/ bar in the early evening. It was not too busy and we were seated straight away. Our friendly waitress took our meal and drinks order . I shared a bottle of red wine with a colleague and ordered the filet mignon with mash potatoes, the steak was well done with no fat , absolutely delicious, despite all the tv screens showing sports it was not too loud , the atmosphere was friendly , dining area was clean and service was very good

ReUnited

By kate71 |

Delighted this favorite haunt has managed to reopen in these strange times and is doing everything right. Health screened and plenty of sanitizing evident made me feel safe immediately and it wasn’t long before I was reunited with my old friend - Cottage Pie :) delicious as ever. My friend enjoyed their cocktail special - the sanitizer, $8 was a bargain for this blend of mescal and beets and raved about the fish and chips afterwards. Overall a great indoor dining experience, fantastic food and service while managing social distancing and constantly sanitizing. Well done to all involved!

Great food, high quality

By Mike B |

The food and drinks are a bit pricey but it's great quality and the beer selection is on par with respectable Irish pubs. This is a great place to get food or drinks if you are in Union Square.

Great staff (Leah in particular), excellent atmosphere, good food and smooth creamy pints of Guinness

By mcoadedoran |

Lovely pub restaurant, good Guinness and excellent staff! Leah (sp) was our server, she was so friendly and helpful. We really are glad she took care of us. A happy demeanor and a good listener, I talked the ears off her! And she was so busy but spared us some time after a long weary day of travelling. The food arrived quickly. Chowder was good and my husband loved the fish and chips. Great location too. Good buzz, Irish music with love music but didn't stay for that. Give it a visit! 5 stars from us and 5 stars for Leah

Pub Favorites are Wonderful!

By JMD0423 |

We loved eating here twice! Expensive, but worthwhile. Service was excellent. Restaurant was clean and attractive. Great choice of meals, especially enjoyed the Pub Favorites which just makes sense to order since they are Irish items in an Irish restaurant. The Cottage Pie was awesome and huge serving. Foley's Fish and Chips was as good as can be! Get a Guinness beer and you're set! Though, you may have to come back another time for dessert since the meals are very filling. Highly recommend!

A Very Nice Solo Visit for Wine

By The_Loup_Garou |

In March, I was back at Johnny Foley’s, but solo this time, and sitting at the bar. I opened up my iPad, while I studied the wine list. That list is short, but also a bit of fun, as most (all?) of the wines have Irish names - neat! Concannon Conservancy Livermore Valley Chardonnay ‘14 Mahoney Carneros Pinot Noir ‘13 As I had already had a rather large breakfast, lunch was just not the order of the day for me, so I sat, did some work, and sipped my wines in a very warm and pleasant setting - an Irish pub in the Union Square Area of San Francisco. Though I was only having wines, the bartenders were friendly and welcoming, and so was Johnny Foley’s. On a previous visit, I had gotten to see the rather large booklet, explaining the artwork on the walls, which were mostly portraits of famous Irish actors, play writes, singers and statesmen and women. I did not go into depth studying the art (spread over several separate rooms, and likely downstairs, as well), but did admire them, once more. I also noticed that there were more paintings of horses, and horse racing, than I recalled from before, but maybe I was concentrating of trying to identify each of the human subjects (only got about 30% correct then). With my work done, and my wine glasses empty, I headed back to the hotel, but chalk this up to a great afternoon, in a friendly pub. As we stay in this area of Union Square often, I know that I will be back.

Great food! But loud.

By Mindy |

The game was on, so it was pretty loud and hard to chat. But the casual atmosphere was fun and inviting. Had the fish and chips - delicious!!! My friend had veggie stew loaded with fresh vegetables. Good beer and wine selection.

Good but...

By Jenna A |

I had a great experience here. Live band and front bar service is amazing. Piano bar downstairs is super fun. HOWEVER. When the front bar got crowded my dad and I tried to go to the back bar to order a drink, my dads service was fine. I ordered right after him and got what I felt was a cheap, very weak drink. I watched her pour it and felt jipped. After paying and taking a sip I asked to add another shot and paid for the additional shot. She rolled her eyes, which I understand, she's thinks I was being difficult, but my drink still has hardly any alcohol in it (even after I paid for extra). Here it is after an additional shot was added. Overall great place, just avoid back bar

Good fayre near Union Square

By Tony C |

This is an Irish bar that sells good food and effectively does what you expect it to do. Table service is available for those eating. Food is good and wholesome from a menu with good variety. We visited for lunch which was perfect with no need to book. I guess it gets much busier in the evening. Give it a go if you are nearby

Fish & chips are the best

By Angela3950 |

Return visit. Maybe I need to branch out but their fish (cod) and chips are really good. Battered and fried (not breaded) with fries that are more like dinner fries than matchbook, aka McDonalds style. Served so fresh and hot, watch out you don’t burn your mouth ;) Excellent service, even on a very busy Sunday night football time. Lots of TV’s if that’s your thing.

Great piano entertainment

By howzat_99 |

Dueling Pianos here is a really fun night out. No covercharge on Thurs but $10 Fri/Sat but this is really a tremendously entertaining way to spend an evening.

Saturday door man is vile and rude

By NorthStar577213 |

I could not believe how rude the door man was to my friends and me. He insulted me in an incredibly dehumanizing way and then screamed in my face that it was $20 to get in. Won’t ever be back!

Good food but expensive

By Debby2010 |

We loved the atmosphere, food and service. Portions are big and given the price, we shared several plates.

We love Johnny's!

By Tracy P |

We stopped here after doing some shopping. Needed to refuel. We seemed to drink more than we ate, oops! We enjoyed the onion strings and the croquettes. Both were great but the croquettes were amazing! We've been to Johnny's on previous occasions and they can get quite busy. Aislinn was our server and she was awesome!

Overpriced and bland food

By Britt H |

We visited this restaurant for a family meal, having been here before, but this time was a huge disappointment. The food was bland and cold. We sent back the chicken wings because they were cold and tasted overwhelmingly of grease. The waitress, who didn’t seem pleased that we had complained, asked if we wanted something else. I asked for a small side of fries since my appetite was already ruined. When the bill arrived, we were shocked to see a $14 charge for the small fries. When I questioned it, the waitress simply said that’s what was written down when ordered (despite me saying small) and that she couldn’t change it. We never received an apology for the food. This place is overpriced, and the service was lacking. A real shame for a meal that cost $200. Extremely disappointing.

Good food, reliable.

By Sean F |

We visited twice for dinner and the food was excellent each time - the usual pub fare of burgers, fish and chips etc, very tasty and served quickly. It does get very noisy when there's a game or match on (which is most nights) and this can spoil the atmosphere if it's not your thing. It's a slick operation but can feel bit like a conveyor belt - get them in, feed them, get them out - but it's speedy, efficient and reliably great food.

Exceeded expectations

By Chaya S |

My husband and I stopped in for a quick bit and beverage. Their wine selection was impressive and their menu was expansive. Highly recommend, as the service was also superior and prices were resonable.

Good Irish Food

By Hilts116 |

Good Irish food I had a very hot cottage pie and Cold Guinness to go with it. It is also a bar so was very noisy but very enjoyable

Not Bad Fish and Chips

By harley m |

My GF and I wanted to go to CodMothers for fish n chips bit they were closed. We walked around and saw Foley's and thought an Irish bar should have decent food. I remembered Foley's from past SF visits having a few cocktails and that it was s fun bar. So we entered into this quaint bar and were seated in the back. Our waiter, Tim. was very nice, attentive and informative about the area, although he is a recent transplant from back East. We ordered the fish n chips and were pleasantly surprised. We received 3 good sized filets and plenty of fries. The fish tasted fresh and was very good, lightly battered. Although it was $20 pp it was well worth it. I would definitely recommend Foley's if you have a craving for fish and chips.

Great food and Guinness

By bkcdublin |

During our stay we visited about 3 times. Really enjoyed it . Very well located off Union Square. Very good music here as well.

A Taste of Ireland in San Francisco

By Keith B |

My wife and I recently visited Johnny Foley's and we had a very good experience. Service was attentive and food was very good. I had a chicken pot pie and my wife had the fish and chips, both very good. We had an early dinner on a Friday and the pub was already busy with a lot of folks having a good time. The decor and layout is fun. Reminded us of our trip to Ireland a few months ago visiting the pubs there.

Irish surprise

By patsy19641964 |

Really enjoyed our time in this pub, the staff were great and deven made you really welcome, the staff behind the bar were brilliant thanks for the memories

Awfully arrogant

By Tofa |

Walked in, the barman was rude, unhelpful and arrogant. There's many other bars in SF so we walked out.

Good irish themed pub/grill

By Matt S |

This was a good Irish themed pub/grill in the Market Square area. This place was convenient to a lot of hotel areas. I went in the mid evening on a weekday during the summer; it was crowded, but as a single diner, I had no wait. I was seated towards the back area. The wood, décor, and lighting definitely was on point for the Irish theme. There was a very good beer selection here, both imports, and local microbrews. My server was very friendly throughout my visit. I went with the bangers and mash dish; the sausage was excellent, and the mashed potatoes - well, mashed potatoes! I did like the veggies that were served on top of the mashed potatoes, adding a little bit of health twist to a "standard" bangers and mash dish. Overall, this was a good place to grab a bite to eat, and for a beer or two.

Great tasting Irish food

By Rodney B |

A coworker and I stopped here for dinner after one of the evenings at a conference we were in town attending. He had heard a number of people mention that this place was great. We went a little early to avoid the crowd and were quickly seated. We ordered some hot wings as an appetizer. Those had a nice kick to them and were not breaded in any way. That makes them so much better. For dinner, I ordered the corned beef and cabbage. The presentation was great as was the flavor of the food. The only thing I found odd is that the plate had both mashed and whole potatoes.

Business Trip

By Krimebag |

I attended a convention and this bar/restaurant was within walking distance of my hotel.I loved this place! The staff was super friendly. The food was delicious. Lots of drink choices and the music was great as well. I would highly recommend visiting this place if you are in the area. OH! And there is a piano bar downstairs that we found by sheer accident. We had a blast in there as well.

Great location, food, service and atmosphere! It was busy and fun. Food was great with very little wait. Our server was wonderful.

A Really Popular Bar That is Usually Very Busy

By Michael W |

Johnny Foley's is located on Cyril Magnin Street just off O' Farrell Street and was a short walk from our hotel the King George Hotel. We would pop in here in the evenings and it was always quite crowded and very busy. The staff at the door will always ask you if you are dining. If you say no they tell you there is no seating available and advise you should go to the bar. We usually went to the bar and ordered drinks. Sometimes it could be quite a long wait to find any seating even at the bar. This is a really great, popular and lively bar that on occasions do have some live music.

Delicious meal, quick service

By rstravelerMaryland |

Ate here the night I arrived, right next to Hotel Nikko where I was staying. Fish and chips were really good, not the best I've ever had but far from the worst. Having Murphy's Stout on tap was a plus. Service was quick and food came out quickly, greatly appreciated given I got in later than expected due to flight delays.

Great food and atmosphere

By Rakigirl27 |

Had a fantastic meal here on the Sunday we stayed in San Francisco. I wish I knew the name of the girl who served us as she was just lovely. We enjoyed our food, drinks and service so much that we went back on Monday night only to discover it was closed Mondays and Tuesdays- just our luck! We would definitely have gone again if we could have done so! Highly recommend.

Just okay

By purduelou |

This place is fine. Nothing special. Fish and chips were okay. The atmosphere is decent and would be good for a group. Need better ipa selections.

Delicious food, large portions, great service

By DKossmann |

I was in the mood for Irish food so my son and I sought out Johnny Foley’s while visiting San Francisco. I had a lamb shank, my son had a pork chop. The service was excellent and our meals were hot and delicious. The portion sizes are very large. My only complaint was the noise. The restaurant was full and there is nothing to absorb sound. It was impossible to carry on a conversation.

The duelling Piano Bar review

By rob |

These guys are good. They have a wide repetoir of music and they can sing and play their pianos well. You can't beat the guys at Napoleon's bar in Las Vegas but these gents come pretty close. Great party atmosphere and the downstairs room was packed with people standing and singing along.

Best Irish pub on the West Coast

Authentic atmosphere. Great location. Plenty of seating. Excellent selection of beers, including Kilkenny. The fish and chips with mushy peas are of high UK standards.

an Irish dinner in the U.S.

By tallino64 |

Next to our hotel in Union Square we discovered this nice Irish food place, honestly never better choice you could make, in fact in addition to the convenience of proximity the place and the food were found to be really good livello.Piatti well cooked and very abundant Guinnes draft beer very good, friendly staff and very friendly average prices for San Francisco, to recommend

A fun experience with great food

By gideonit |

Great bar and decent restaurant. Food is delicious, the pork chop especially. I had a problem with my dinner and they were great dealing with it. It was really loud that night, not sure if it's that loud all the time but probably. Still, good eats and a fun atmosphere.

Great service, great food!

By Kaylee S |

Everything from our appetizers (the potato skins) to our food (fish n chips and steak) was a hit. My husband and I both said afterwards too it was the hottest food we've ever been served in a restaurant. Too hot to eat for a couple of minutes - a great problem to have. The service was great as well and I thought the price was fair for the amount of food you get.

A warm welcome

By Thomas R |

We dropped in for a pint & liked it so much we came back again & again, each time we were greeted like regulars. I can highly recommend their Lamb chops washed down with a pint of Kilkenny, enjoy 😋

Always time for a pint

By graylangley |

I have been coming to Johnny Foley's Irish House for over 20 years. The best grilled tuna sandwich I have ever had in all of the cities I have visited. And of course, always a perfect pour of your Guinness.

Pub away!

A classic Irish pub at the heart of Central San Francisco. Nice options for beer. Classic food menu. Good attending. Cheap prices. Recommend

Best Place Ever !!!!!

By Miles L |

There is not much more I can say but this has to be on your list of places to go! Fantastic food, fantastic staff and an amazing environment. I ate here every day while I was in town. You won't be sorry.

Busy bar with good food

By Paul W |

When we saw Foley's bar, we thought that we were in Dublin LOL! We visited on three seperate evening/nights and found the place to be busy on each occassion, which speaks for it's self. The food and liquid refreshments were good on each of our visits.

Great atmosphere, food and service

By Dan Fitz |

As a Brit, Foley's looks like a massive traditional English (Irish) pub, but it has the twist of great table service and incredible food. Service was brilliant and they can pour Guinness properly.

Loved foleys and the gang

By Us traveller |

Met Devon, Dathi Mary and Martin. Couldn't of been a nicer bunch of real Irish folk . Music was fantastic also with the food

Excellent Irish Bar

By Rameshlcfc |

This is an excellent Irish bar in a very popular area of Sn Francisco. The bar staffs were very friendly, helpful and welcoming. I enjoyed my pint of Guinness here. The place serve food, we did not eat here (the menu looked good). Free WIFI. Unfortunately it is closed on Monday and Tuesday (we were disappointed).

Wonderful Irish Pub

By Laree S |

Following a disappointing morning, we decided to conclude our San Francisco adventure by hanging out in an Irish pub. We’d passed by Foley’s a few times and decided it’d be just the ticket to adjust our attitudes for the trip home. We were not disappointed. We were delighted with the selection of beers on tap. The menu selection was great and the food the passed by us looked and smelled wonderful. The only reason we didn’t eat was we had recently eaten a bad brunch at another establishment… we should have waited. The was traditional, as Irish pubs go. The woodwork was beautiful and i particularly liked the 1” hexagon tile floor which I assumed was original. The staff were jovial and attentive, which made our time at Foley’s quite pleasant. With moods effectively adjusted, we headed from Foley’s to the airport in much better moods than when we arrived. It was a fitting conclusion to a mostly enjoyable visit to San Francisco.

Food is good

By AVMAustralia |

This was an interesting experience. It was really loud as there was a basketaball game on and that was very exciting and fun. The waitress was great with service and took our order and came back a few times. I ordered the rib eye and my mistake I forgot to say well done. My husband said to send it back and I really didn’t want to and the waitress seemed really good about it. I apologised that I didn’t say it when ordering. I swear I got a different steak back, never mind. However, she then disappeared. We never saw her again, she just disappeared. I did see her when going to the restroom with other guests in another area. Some time passed after eating and drinking and finishing watching the game and my husband had to look for her to get the bill. I don’t know if that was intentional becase I sent the steak back or just coincidence. It’s still a good place and the food was good. I was going to give a a decent tip due to her effort with my strand but we changed our mind simply because she’d gone AWOL.

Delicious cottage pie

By nico84ro |

Nice atmosphere and great service. The food was excellent (cottage pie and shrimp ravioli). Good beer selection

Rude arrogant not irish. Zero

By rupert m |

Ive not felt so unwelcome and depressed in all my reviews. The bearded bar man was a complete arse. I have nothing else to say apart from the place also smelt of fish.

Great bar with excellent food.

By BlaaFan |

Had drinks here a few evenings and dinner another night and must say all outings were great. The food, for a bar, is exceptionally good and much better than the usual. Great selection of beer on tap and friendly service, but it is a sports bars with TVs everywhere, so not really a spot for deep conversation!

Dinner

By Martin M |

I suppose the nearest thing to a real Irish bar when away. Great food on the menu however don’t fall over with the 9.25 dollars for a pint of the black stuff and 9.00 dollars for some brown soda bread

Great pub

By Deirdre M |

We watched the super bowl here and had a great day! We were remembered by the bar men from when we arrived our 1st night so we got a really nice welcome. Had a few meals through out the game and they were all good especially the pub dog!! ! Staff were all friendly, really nice atmosphere there

Fun Irish Bar

By Julie F |

We weren’t sure on this spot but glad we took a chance. The service was great and very attentive. I tried the smoked salmon potato pancake and it was amazing! Presented like a pizza and unlike anything I had ever had before. Please stop by and have a Guinness or two!!

Comfort Food.

By Mary I |

Just a short walk from Hilton Union Square, we found Johnny Foley’s. The Bar was quite busy but was seated in a quiet spot in the restaurant. The Chicken and vegetable pie was great with large chunks of chicken in a creamy sauce. Was perfect comfort food.

Best Irish bar in San Francisco

By JP |

The best hospitality in San Francisco = fact From the moment we walked in, it was a positive vibes being shared. We were shown to a table by Mary (The boss) and Sapna was very proactive to come and welcome us and check in for our first drink. Throughout our evening another waitress Monica, came over and introduced herself and helped us with our visit to San Francisco and helped us with all the information we needed. Best waitress and possibly in the wrong trade but totally absorbed all her travel information - thank you so much. I asked if they did chips, unfortunately they didn’t. However, Monica came over with the menu for appetisers and I was instantly sold on the loaded potato skins which were bloody incredible. My friend had the buffalo wings which were just as good. The overall experience in Johnny’s is friendly, fun and amazing hospitality. To anyone visiting the area, come to the Irish bar!! It’s the same vibe in Dublin, Barcelona and San Francisco- I’ve been to 3 different Irish bars and it’s always amazing 5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ service. Thank you Monica, Mary and Sapna for kicking off our trip to San Francisco to a positive start. Thank you Monica for all you done for us and for celebrating our 30th birthday with us. Much love Josh & Jo

Busy but good pub.

By Sarah W |

Had dinner here early one evening and the place was already busy! My son ordered fried chicken which he said was good. I had their soup of the day which was a VERY tasty chicken tortilla soup.

Poor

By steven c |

Zero atmosphere, horrible layout, doesn't feel like a proper Irish pub at all. Okay selection of beer, easy to pop in for a quick pint, but don't expect much.

Irish bar

By PeteJac |

Great food menu; great size portions, fun and efficient staff, music some nights high class Irish bar compared to others locally

Still as good.....

By Kerzy |

Been on many occasions, good vibe, good food and service. Good Irish pub in San Francisco, really busy so may have to wait for a table.

Great food

By Simon B |

This Irish Bar came recommended to us ad we were not disappointed. The food is excellent and there is a great vibe to the place, with live music anf fun atmosphere.

Excellent food and service

By Lovestrave1 |

My husband and I eat here every Time we visit SF. First, without kids and now with our two kids. We’ve always received excellent service along with phenomenal food. We have never once had a bad meal here. My personal favorite is the cottage pie. Great drinks as well and always accommodating to our children. Love this place.

A pint and a bowl

By 792SteveS792 |

Loved this place! I had a pint of Guinness and a bowl of seafood chowder. A little on the expensive side but it is downtown San Francisco.

Irish pub with a cool vibe! Great date-night spot with all the greasy comfort foods everyone loves!

By The_Concierge_8 |

We'd returned from an exhausting day of sightseeing to Union Square and needed sustenance. We spotted this Irish pub so went in for a casual meal. The food portions were pretty big so we shared a cheeseburger, garlic fries and potato skins. Together with a wine, 1 beer and 2 juices our bill came to US$90. A little on the high side but expected for downtown San Francisco. Service was engaging and quick which we loved. Easy location in the heart of everything and so close to the tram turnaround and the Powell train station.

Restaurant Great, Cellar Bar, not so much.

By Aligbythesea |

First visit to San Francisco for St. Paddy's Parade. After parade we had dinner in the restaurant. It was fantastic, wait staff very accodating, food delicious. Afterwards we went to The Cellar for the dueling pianos show. While waiting we ordered drinks at the bar. I specifically ordered a single shot of Titos and a tall glass of water with a couple of limes. I watched the bartender pour 2 shots. I stopped him and said that I only ordered 1 shot. He just looked at me and with a little flip of his head and hand filled the rest of the glass with water and sat it down on the bar in front of me. I asked if I could have a few slices of lime and he grabbed one and tossed it in my drink. I took a sip, but because it had 2 shots, I really wanted a few more slices of lime. I asked several more times only to be ignored as if I was invisible. My friend ordered something and was helped right away. I asked again & he still ignored me. There was a pencil on the bar so I wrote if I could please have a few more limes for my drink on a napkin. Ignored. We left the bar and found a table. The female server during the piano show was wonderful. Short guy behind the bar, not so much.

Wonderful food!

By Donna H |

We were in San Francisco for a conference and our hotel was just down the street. We happened upon this quaint pub on day 2. We shared the fish and chips. They were amazing! Usually when we are visiting a city we don't like to visit the same restaurant more than once so we can try different places. Well, we ended up going to Foley's 3 times!!! We went back for Banger's and Mash, and the next day for their pot pie. I love that they are open late as we are late eaters. Everything we had was great! We always shared meals as the portions are huge! One meal filled us both up every time!

Always a great stop

By travelwithpam |

As always I have their great Irish Coffee. On this visit I had their steak sandwich. Delicious! A great spot near Union Square. Large menu with many choices. Will be back there soon!

Duelling pianos

By Expat Adrian |

Popped into this joint on a recommendation and wasn’t disappointed, brilliant couple of lads playing piano to recommendations from the audience. Very interactive, participation demanded, efficient table service. My wife and I loved the night, We sang ourselves hoarse. Pop downstairs for an extremely entertaining and interactive evening.

Delish

By Jacqui |

I went to Johnny Foleys on my last night and wish l found it at the start of the trip. House red wine was very good and the cabbage and corned been with mash potatoes OMG was sooooooooooo good. My fave meal so far. The mash was perfect , the cabbage cooked just right and the corned beef was juicy and tasty. Great staff. Huge serving. Great price. My photo doesn't really do it justice because it was dark and l didnt want to be one of "those people" who takes photos of their food. A must go to place.

Great barman and atmosphere it’s a must in San Francisco

By MK |

We enjoyed our last few drinks in this great bar ! Davin was the best barman on our USA trip ! Better then the chieftain bar as the barman rude in there !

Beautiful St Patricks day lunch

By Owen O Mahony |

While visiting San Francisco I called to Johnn Foleys on St Patrick’s following the parade with my wife and son. A great atmosphere greeted us and we all had lunch. My son and I opted for bacon and cabbage, while my wife who is coeliac was facilitated with a corn beef choice. As nice as I’ve ever had. Enough said.

Service slow and food not great

By Joanne Z |

We are here visiting from the East Coast. Went here for dinner. Corn beef and cabbage not traditional and not great. Fish and Chios subpar. Server was slow and forgot things. Would not recommend.

Great Place!

By KrissyandCody |

Such a cool bar! Great beer and cocktails. We just stopped by for drinks but I wish we had ate, the menu looked delicious. Big TV's for sport watching as well.

Fish & Chips

By Mary R |

I had the fish & chips and my husband had the pot pie. Both were excellent. Good service and fun environment.

Bad Experience

By Kiwiguyz69 |

The well gin was tasteless and the measures were mean. The bartender was unfriendly and not helpful. We had one drink each and we won’t be coming back.

A cut above pub food

By stephenpash |

Lamb stew and Veggie stew. Both really good and portion size good. Staff great and the place was buzzing. Definitely worth a visit IMHO.

Toward the end of the evening

By gregoryl235 |

I've eaten here before, and always like it. This time it was just for drinks. Great selection of beers on tap, just a bit pricy.

Rude barman

By francespaton |

Tried this bar for st Patrick’s day celebrations. Got our drinks and paid for by card. Was about to tip with cash but barman obviously thought he wasn’t getting a tip and then thrown the receipt at us. Extremely rude!!!

Typical Irish Pub

By Dylan W |

Only had an appetizer so can't speak to food. Service was great and the band was excellent! Would like to go back when have more time.

good experience

By ralf h |

We ran into this pub a little by chance. super welcome great atmosphere service at the top quality cuisine frankly a very good time spent there

Decent appetizers and wine.

By AlbertaRN |

Decent appetizers and wine. Came here Friday night with my mom for wine and appies. Packed house, but some of the best service we’ve had so far in San Francisco. Food was delicious.

Lunch

By Tanya T |

Excellent pub with excellent food and very friendly staff. If we had more time in SF we likely would have returned. The turkey burger and cottage pie were above average for pub fare and the sweet potatoes fries were perfection.

never again

By 196LindaC |

Had the lamb stew. It tasted alright (not excellent) but the lamb pieces were so large that I had to cut them and the lamb was tough. When eating stew (which I liken to a type of soup), I don't expect to use a knife. The waitress treated us as if it was an imposition for her to wait on us...as if she had something better to do.

Good food and drinks

By Andres V |

An excellent choice for food and drinks in Union Square. There was a band playing when we went. Prices are reasonable.

Stay away! Terrible food and very expensive!

By Disapointed customer |

Stay away from this place. We came to eat a dinner, drink a beer and enjoy the athmosfere. Sorry to disapoint you if you are looking for the same. We ordered an Irish stew and fillet steak. The stew was not even close to what is called an Irish stew, specially not that one we eat in Dublin... The fillet was so overcooked, so it felt like a shoe sole. A beer also had a strange taste. Lucky us we did not get an idigestion. After all this, we paid 200$. Yes, the prices were on menu, but paying such a high price for disgusting food is really waist of money. And I haven't speak yet about very strong fish smell in all the place. Sorry we entered here and haven't come back to other places we visit... Don't do my mistake, just go to other place.

Irish Pub Fare - Great for afterwork cocktails but would not recommend for food

By Beverly F |

Great for afterwork cocktails but would not recommend for food or intimate dining. This place is loud and rambunctious. We ordered the cottage pie ($21) and fish & chips ($20) and it was so loud we couldn't hear each other. First timers to this place so maybe we didn't realize it's more of a sports bar/hangout as it was filled with after hour drinkers. We would come back for the cocktails and good times, but would not recommend this place for dinner as it's far too loud and crowded to enjoy a dining experience. Food was just okay . . . maybe we expected more from an Irish Pub when we ordered traditional Irish Food. Ah well. At the very least, people seemed to be having a good time around us as they bumped our chairs and spilled their drinks on us!

So disappointed

By Elliot N |

So disappointed. The steak and mushroom pie is not a pie. It's stew with some pastry thrown on top. It also doesn't have mushrooms in it. Further it comes with no sides, isn't even that good and is grossly over priced. Authentic pub food, I think not.

Irish Coffee

By Berlin01 |

Ok... Not quite Buena Vista, but close on the Irish coffee. Coffee *not* freshly brewed (came from a pump pot) and cost was *$11.75* for the Irish coffee, but still worth the trip. I will be back.

A great find!

By Sue G |

We had waited for this place to open after Christmas hols & we were not disappointed although we could only eat there once. The place is large but they play fantastic & different music so if you like your music & food this is the place for you. The roast chicken is amazing.

Not very Irish....& some hospitality needed

By 168heatherb |

We’ve been to many Irish pubs around the world, so sought out one during our stay in San Francisco. Foley’s had good & disappointing points but overall is one of the more disappointing Irish Pubs. Pluses - the server was excellent - she literally ran the whole time, but had a smile on her face for us....in the brief time she was able to give us. The paint work & woodwork in the venue was quite lovely. However, here comes the disappointments! The greeter was sour to the point of almost rude. We tried to go during the afternoon & she told us one thing. When we went back later, she (the same girl) said another thing, & that we could be waitlisted - which she said we could not do earlier???? Apparently we could have but she did not give that option. Told a 35-45 minute wait & they’d ‘find’ us at the bar - how do they know who they have where??? Then to get a drink at the bar was torturous - couldn’t get close, then couldn’t be heard. Beware they have a sign that you can only use a ‘card’ to pay over $20, so buy expensive drinks or pay for lots of friends! 2 Guinness were $19.00 - had to pay cash! Pain for overseas travellers! At 42 minutes & with a degree of hearing loss because of the incredible noise, we were finally given a table, right in a thoroughfare. Again, the server was great. I had Cottage Pie for $22 + tax. I’ve had this world wide & this was probably the most disappointing. What I got was a plate full of very pretty Mashed potato, well decorated, with a gravy underneath & one mouthful of ground meat & one piece of carrot. So very expensive for what is was. We’d definitely not go back, because of the lack of hospitality you’d normally find in a fun Irish Pub. But if you like a very loud venue, with no Irish atmosphere & basic food at a not so basic price, then ty it.

Guinness, steak and cottage pie - what’s not to like

By B T |

First meal of visit to San Fran and he chooses an Irish pub! Two pints of the dark stuff, a VERY tasty (I’m told) petite filet steak and a huge cottage pie later, I have to agree his choice. Service quick, food piping hot, atmosphere nice. Overall very good. And the reason I’ve not given it five stars? Well, we’re going back again in a couple of days, so I can try something else on the menu :-) Watch this space to see if five stars appear.....

Great Food, Abysmal Service

By Matt_Y2302 |

I would score this restaurant lower if it wasn’t for the good quality food. Seated by the front of house staff, and was given Gabbi as our server. Gabbi was completely rude throughout the sitting we did not receive our appetisers and the one main arrived incorrect and we were made to wait a period for it to arrive. Drinks were delayed by Gabbi and it was noted that she was attentive to the table next to us, however, was abrupt with us.

Above and Beyond

By mikesTexas |

So many restaurants in San Francisco. The wife and I went to Johnny Foley’s based on their good reviews. We were blown away. It was so much better than we expected. I had the Cottage Pie and my wife had the Corned Beef and Cabbage. Both dishes were incredible. We were in San Francisco on vacation and it was, by far, our best meal yet. The next couple of days have a very high bar to clear. Much thanks to the staff at Johnny Foley’s. :-)

Good Times!

By Kim |

Food was great. Ambiance was great. Devin provided such amazing Service behind the bar that we will go back again and again each time we visit the area! He was personable, friendly, attentive, and had a great sense of humor. Thanks, Devin, for making these New Jersey people very happy, which admittedly is not an easy thing to do!

Still the best

By sadbuttru |

We where staying close by at the Hilton and the service was terrible and I remember coming in here before. It still has great service and friendly staff. If you stay any where close by stop on for a good time.

Beautiful discovery

By Pascale R |

Irish pub par excellence: atmosphere, decor, menus (maps very provided), choice of beers. Delicious and hearty meals. No waiting and friendly staff. Good pop rock music!

Holy Cottage Pie, Batman!

By tshaw34 |

Had lunch with my wife and a friend and we were treated to wonderful service and delicious grub. They were in conference and my job is to find a good Irish pub while they are in meetings. I succeeded! Ryan A made sure our drinks were fresh and the food was amazing. I wanted another Cottage pie and a nap. Will definitely be in again when in the neighborhood!

Wonderful place!

By Lynne M |

Stopped by in here as we were staying not far as we came for the ELO concert. What a find!! Great place, lovely atmosphere. Devin and David made us feel so welcome and had such a laugh with them. Bertie was also such a nice guy. Went back again and again. Definitely recommend this place, thank you for making our time in there so good!! 😀

Always at the top of my Iist!

By travelwithpam |

A few of us met for Irish Coffees and lunch prior to the women’s march last Saturday. I had the steak sandwich with fries. Others had the tuna melt and a burger. Everyone enjoyed their food. I have been there several times and I am always thoroughly pleased. Our server was Crystal and she was great. It goes without saying that the Irish coffees were fantastic!

A Racist Humiliation. The owner is crazy!

By Saumya R |

These guys are crazy racist, super rude an humiliating dumb bunch of folks! They are just in the wrong line of business. We were 5 guys 1 girl group. I am 36 year old woman. Upon order the server asked me for a physical ID - I showed my ID and she went away saying I will only accept physical ID. I walked up to the manager and asked why do you need a physical ID. What is the law? What you need to check. I felt they took physical ID as the reason to just not serve us. They actually had put us in an area where there was NO ONE Else in otherwise crowded pub. If you know what I mean, as if it’s embarrassing to even have us inside. The owner soon came out and said- “hey would you shut up and listen. You go home and get your ID or just side down here and don’t drink” - it was so shocking that I told her look I am here with my team and let us know if you don’t want to serve us. Everytime she came to take the order she would just repeat “if you share your drink with this WOMAN I will THROW you out”. I assured her that I am not gonna drink- I understand her concern if that’s the law. She again came SHOUTING at me with her fingered shaking aggressively saying I will throw you out if you drink. This time I said I don’t like how you are behaving. You are very rude. Why are you shouting - no one gets to behave this way. She collected all the drinks and food on the table and said I am the owner get out and never comeback on my property!!! While I was walking out she kept pushing me! Well that’s a typical racist Irish bar- just unfortunately not in Ireland ( where this is common behaviour) but is SF where you least expect. I hope people take note of my review and not support such a business.

Not recommended

By Mia x |

Came to this place as thought it was an irish bar, which it showed no resemblance of. Me, and my partner paid €20 each to attend the downstairs duelling pianos. Wow what a disappointment. The guy with the long white beard just kept constantly asking for extra money from everyone to play a song. He humiliated those that paid €5 and said he wouldn't get out of bed for that... he was so arrogant and ruined it for everyone. The other guy was good but let down by his "musician friend". We went upstairs to what was supposed to be traditional irish bar and band. It was very ok but zero resemblance of anything irish. Wouldn't go again nor recommend.

Always a great place!

By travelwithpam |

The Irish coffees are a must for me and this time I had the potato skins with Irish cheddar cheese. They were excellent as is every lunch I’ve had there. From the fish & chips, the burgers, and the steak sandwich. I will be back again soon.

Food Gorgeous

By April S |

Very good food and staff very friendly. Only downside it is very expensive. Definitely worth a visit.

Perfect

By Kim E |

Went here for dinner the first night of our trip to San Francisco. From atmosphere to staff to food everything was perfect. We had a bit of a wait for a table but had a drink at the bar which had several beers on tap. We started out with the mussel app which were so delicious, every one was tender and the whiskey cream was yummy. The Hubbs had the fish and chips and I had the cottage pie. Both were hefty portion and very flavorful. Ollie, our server, was very attentive but not over bearing. I would recommend both dishes. Also, don’t leave without finishing your meal off with either an Irish coffee or Baileys coffee.

Go when it's busy - less pressure. Also, don't choose a less well known song.

By madp0m in Sydney |

Dueling Pianos in the Cellar was something we were really excited about. The format is great - you pay an amount that you want to pay to request a song that you like. I understand that this is all about tips for them - they let you know that the higher the price, the more your choice will be prioritised. This is fine. BUT what is not fine is banging on about someone who requested a song (that the pianist didn't know) for a smaller $ amount than the pianist felt was reasonable. It was amusing the first time he mentioned he had no idea who the artist was - but it soon became tired after he said it time and time again. Again, I understand that it's all about tips, but there is a classy way to encourage people to pay ... and this was not it. We left soon after.

Vibey Irish pub

By Helen A |

Irish pub atmosphere, great staff, good food and happy meal prices. Good value for money. It was a find in that area. We went there three times and tried a variety of foods. Managed to get a table even during happy hour with a short wait.

What a great bar

By Dante |

Johnny Foley’s was one of those places I walked into expecting a fun Irish bar and ended up being completely floored by the whole experience. The vibe is exactly what you want, lively, welcoming, and the kind of spot where you immediately know you’re going to have a good time. But the food is what shocked me. The fish and chips were genuinely out of this world, perfectly crispy and not greasy, and the potato skins were dangerously good. We also had the Irish burger and the Reuben, and both were way better than they had any right to be for a bar. Then, just when you think it can’t get better, the live music kicks in, and their cover band was one of the best I’ve ever heard. If you’re in San Francisco and want a great night out where the food actually delivers, this place is a no-brainer.

Authentic Irish Pub

By Jeffery S |

Very busy restaurant but service was still good. When I was looking at the menu I thought it was a bit on the pricey side, but once I received my dinner it was clear that it was a really good value. I had the Pork Chops and it was amazing. I very large cut and cooked perfectly.

Nice servers, and noisy atmosphere, open late

By Sherri F |

Had a good meal, and was happy to find a restaurant open late on a weekday. 2 entrees Corned beef Platter (meh), Shepherds/Cottage Pie (good), 1 beer, one soft drink about $75 with tip and tax. Nice servers, and noisy atmosphere. I'll bet that lamb stew would have been good, but they were all out ;-)

Very poor service for a supposed Irish pub/bar

By Saclin |

Almost non-existent service. Tried to order at the bar and was ignored. So checked with the host and was told a server would come to take an order. Waited about 15mins with no result. Eventually was asked if I wanted to order anything by which time it was almost time to leave but thought I’d have a quick pint. Order was taken but that was about all as I waited again for the drink to appear but no such luck.

Good bar, good location

By Tony S |

Irish themed bar... possibly to the point of trying a little too hard (paintings of Irish notable figures), but pleasant place to stop for a drink. Good service and good beer but I've knocked the rating down by 1 for having a programme on carpentry on the main screen instead of something more appropriate for drinking! This is a pub but as with so many of a similar disposition, concentrates on food more than the beer.

Well worth a visit

By Janice C |

We were in San Francisco for the weekend and visited this bar twice during our visit. It is a busy place but worth the wait for a table you can have a drink from the bar while you wait, we were quoted 39 minutes but the actual time was less. The menu has good choices and a few specials on offer as well. The portion sizes are good and the flavours are amazing and all the meals we had were cooked and presented well. The staff are all very pleasant, welcoming and attentive and the service was excellent. We highly recommend this as a place to visit

Nice pub, good food

By gbeuchat |

Very near Union Square, this is a typical Irish Pub with excellent beer and good food. Tried some very good spicy prawns and the traditional bangers & mash. Reccomended.

Excellent Pub Food in central SAN Francisco

By John S |

We are a group of 6 travelling the region. We were welcomed and spoilt by the staff. The food is excellent, tasty and well priced with daily specials. Mary is exceptional. Great local knowledge and great for advice for travellers. Cannot express exactly how impressed we were with the welcoming service.

Great Irish Pub!

By USBtraveler |

Great food, excellent beer, very good service and a reasonable price range. A traditional Irish pub. Service was quick too.

Great Irish Pub

By Matt S |

We really enjoyed the atmosphere of this place. Great selection of Irish beer and whiskey. Apple pie dessert is amazing. We had a good waitress who was attentive despite being busy. Irish coffee was good as well.

Pub cared for in every detail and the staff who served us as well as being professional proved to be very kind and nice. We ate Irish ripoti dishes that proved exceptional.

Great American Bar with an Irish twist.

By Paul G |

A great Irish/American bar experience with a burger and hotdog for my wife that epitomises all that should be good bar food. A sign off to San Fran and so sad to leave you. A special mention to Devin for his very attentive bar work.

We went in looking for some good food and we found it. The seafood chowder was tremendous and the Foley burger was AWESOME as well as Awesome Service

Went twice, wish I'd stopped at 1 visit !

Close to our hotel so tried for dinner one night, a burger & Fish and Chips, excellent food, service and a decent enough price for what we had. It was busy but not too noisy. Second visit on the last night of stay in SF was a different event - the place was so noisy you could not have a conversation with someone sitting at your table, let alone hear the waitress. Having sat down and decided not to stay we were moved to another table (A slight improvement) again the food and service was good. It's a shame the TV sound needed to be so loud, which in turn makes people shout to each other making it worse. OK it's America, there is sport on but it does not need to take over the entire pub making it uncomfortable. If it wasn't for the good food/service I would have given it 3 stars - if your not a sports bar focus on the pub aspect and maybe I would have given 5.
