Wow! Especially in Springtime!

By Lufdoc |

Al fresco brunch - reservations a must! - at Josephine House is as good as it gets! Kouign Amann pastry was delicious! Lemon Ricotta pancakes were simply divine. Belgian Waffle also excellent. Waitstaff great. Niman Ranch steak and eggs? Sure! Can’t wait to go back!

Expensive but intimate delicious and not pretentious!

I love Josephine House and have been there a bunch in the past two years. Had a business lunch there yesterday and was excited about the crispy red snapper entre with grits and wilted spinach. Very nice Vouvray with lunch and others had the burger and fries which they said was spectacular. Started with a tray of homemade breads that were just incredible -- rye and sourdough with olives and walnuts. Terrific dessert options as well but I just had a cup of joe. Josephine House is expensive, especially for lunch, but it's terrific "fine" dining without attitude. Very Austin in the super terrific Clarksville neighborhood.

Unfortunately - poor in all areas / should be a nice neighborhood place

By PC12Traveler |

Three of us had dinner on Wednesday night. A very poor experience from start to finish. First - 3 of us were crammed at a table for two....so I was stuck in the aisle - getting bumped by everyone. We had a reservation...we should have had a decent table. So loud - it was hard to talk. Wine list - average to below. Appetizer and salads were ok. Two of our entrees were so salty they were unpleasant...the pork chop and the carbonara. The grain bowl was ok but nothing special for $28. The waitress did not bring our last round of drinks. There were two of the staff at the kitchen window the entire evening - doing nothing but talking to each other and not bringing us our drinks. I guess this was the manager and assistant manager? Never came over after several tries to get their attention. This place cost as much as the best restaurants in Austin - but it is no where close. The steak frites cost $41 at Balthazar in NYC...it costs $40 at Josephine. This is a joke. The food, service and atmosphere are excellent at Balthazar and this place is in an Austin neighborhood. Josephine House needs an upgrade in all areas just on basic quality and service. If they are going to charge like the best - they need to at least get in the ballpark.

Cute, quaint, call ahead!

First rule: make a reservation! I’m so glad we did because it is a tiny place and we did not want to sit outside. They were very accommodating when we wanted to change our time but it was a Monday so I imagine they had a little more flexibility. The server was friendly and knowledgeable-thank you, Ryan! The blueberry soda is to die for! The peaches and Brie appetizer was so unique and incredibly delicious. Everyone enjoyed their entrees from the snapper, the pasta, the burger, and the rice bowl. Definitely recommend this place for those who love new flavors and laid back atmospheres.

One Of the Best

We loved everything we had there from the cocktails to the grits to the well, everything! Fun menu that wasn't just trying to be different for difference's sake, it was done well.

I can't wait to go back!

It is a really fun place to have a drink with a unique Austin atmosphere. The cocktails are fantastic, and the wine is wonderful. It really isn't a place you would find in most urban areas. It's a lot like Austin, in that it represent the marriage of Los Angeles with Texas. You have the natural Austin local charm mixed with the Glam of LA. I love it.

Full of itself.

Here's what I loved about it: The tomatoes were really tasty. The Tzatziki sauce on my open faced BLT was tinged with fresh tarragon. The bread was great. Here's what I didn't love: No parking. The waiters spent more time jostling the water carafes on the sideboard than taking care of customers. The menu is very pricey (my open faced BLT was 16 bucks - and didn't even come with a side.) Service is kind of snooty. (My husband asked for salt and pepper for his potato, and they acted as if that was totally tacky.) This is my second time here. The first time I had just started a new diet and found that it was one of the few restaurants on the planet where there was nothing for me to eat. I ended up with an $18 plate of lettuce with a slice of apple. Thought today would be better since I've dropped the diet, but still had the same impression. I don't feel like I need to go back.

Innovative menu, great atmosphere

By MoscowLinda |

The menu is poetry...Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Poteet strawberries & blackberries, whipped cream & maple syrup ($16) Greek Yogurt & Poached Duck Egg, Texas olive oil, garden herbs & garlic, Aleppo pepper, and chapati ($18) Alsatian Tart, Swiss chard, pickled spring onions, Texas chèvre, garden herbs ($12) My family came here graduation weekend and it was great. very charming atmosphere and impeccable service. The hostess and all of the staff were wonderful and the food was fantastic! Worth the drive!

Adorable

Wait staff is sweet, great at many points of the day. Their vegan blueberry banana bread is fantastic nicely accompanied with a cappuccino or "green juice." Great burger! The dinner menu is half off 3-5. Avocado salmon toast is fantastic. Cute little gem of clarksdale. Plan ahead, waits can be long at peak hours.

Delightful Lunch

By John W |

Josephine is a delightful and casual wine bar next door toots well-know sister restaurant, Jeffrey's. We came very late for lunch and even though the kitchen had closed our waiter put together a delightful meal for three of us to enjoy with a bottle of Champaign. I hesitate to review the food since our selection was limited, but the service was friendly and efficient and the ambiance was wonderful. A great place for a casual but elegant lunch.

UT Graduation celebration

Excellent brunch. Reservations a must. Service was excellent, the pancakes were the best but wife love huevos rancheros and son had waffles..quaint location in Clarksville. Sorry we just now found it after kids were in Austin the past 7 years.

What a disappointment

By Mary B |

We were quite excited to dine at Josephine House and booked several months in advance to celebrate our daughter’s birthday. When booking on Open Table we were give the choice of a “standard” reservation or an “outdoor” reservation. Since June in Texas is quite hot, we chose the “standard” option. Upon our arrival at the restaurant, we were shown to the very hot and sticky patio area. We immediately informed the hostess that we had reserved indoor seating and were told that “standard” meant outdoor seating. This made absolutely no sense, but we tried to play along and tough it out. It immediately became clear to us that it was going to be miserably hot, and my husband was just three weeks removed from a stay in ICU, so we made another appeal to the staff. We had noticed empty tables inside so thought it would be an easy switch. We were immediately treated as if we were being untruthful and basically not worth their time, even though we produced documentation that clearly stated that we did not make an outdoor reservation. The staff member told us that the best she could do for us was to give us an inside table for one hour as there was another reservation after that time, and we would have to hurry so we were within that time frame. I explained that we were having a family celebration and really didn’t want to feel rushed, so she shrugged and left us to swelter in the heat. Rarely have I been treated by a wait staff with such a rude, dismissive attitude and at no point were we granted an apology. A simple apology and a bit of kindness would have gone a long way and perhaps made us more inclined to attempt to stick it out, but we felt extremely unwanted. We chose to leave and took our dining dollars to Chez Zee where we were treated to a lovely meal by people who actually seemed appreciate our business! What a novel concept! I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention that my future son-in-law gave Josephine House a call after our debacle, and inquired how to book an indoor table on Open Table. He was told to select the “standard” option and he would be guaranteed indoor seating. Right. They are a hot mess there in every sense and unless you enjoy being treated poorly, I would take my business elsewhere.

A favorite off the beaten-path restaurant

By Mark C |

One of my favorite spots in Austin. Food and drinks have always been excellent as it is served by a friendly, quirky staff. Definitely a good spot to try that is away from the touristy areas of downtown / South Congress.

Best breakfast in town!

By Jessica N |

From the place itself to the food and service. This place is amazing! The food was delicious. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ book before hand to seat outside.

Too many other good choices

By John |

Spend your money elsewhere. The success of this restaurant and its co-located sister restaurant, Jeffrey’s, has gone to their collective head. The food is very good but not special, and certainly not worth the excessive price when one considers the haughty attitude of the waitstaff and hosts. The food and atmosphere aren’t even close to special enough for the patrons to be treated like they are fortunate to be seated and served. If you wish to be treated well when you dine out, go to any number of great Austin restaurants where they are happy to serve you great food promptly and respectfully. I don’t typically write reviews but I rely on them and felt compelled to write this one. Go somewhere else, unless you enjoy passive aggressive abuse with your overpriced meal.

Smart with excellent food and service

By sweetiesPennsylvania |

We went for a late lunch early in the week.Sunny day so we were seated on the lovely patio.place was busy but not overly so.Service is a little formal but professional in every respect-prompt,polite,informative and somewhat friendly.Given that this is a casual restaurant in Austin we were concerned that the formality may be at the expense of the quality of the food.Concerns were allayed very quickly. We ordered the sweet potato soup, some charcuterie,a tartine and a couscous salad. All were excellent-good quality prosciutto and salami served with a coarse mustard, very good sourdough and walnut bread.Well dressed salads with fresh produce and citrus, soup with just the right balance of sweet and savory.Semolina cake not too sweet ,served with tangy yogurt ,equally good.Excellent espresso.Wine by the glass at reasonable prices.Definitely going back.

Birthday brunch

By CharlieinTexas |

Sat outside, very cozy. Friendly service. Interesting menu with good variety of breakfast and lunch foods. The avocado toast was fantastic, with a fried egg on top. Fruit was very fresh. My chicken soup, with an Indian–like seasoning was delicious and filling. All seven in our party really enjoyed the meal. A bit pricey, but worth it.

Very Impressed

By Megan R |

Just returned from lunch at Josephine House, and was pleasantly surprised! The food was delicious-we ordered fried oysters, kale salad and the alsatian tart. All were wonderful and fresh. For dessert we shared the blood orange upside down cake and the dark chocolate pot du creme. Both were lovely. The service was excellent. Our server was attentive, but not overbearing. Charming decor, excellent menu. The perfect lunch spot!

Overpriced

By Linda |

We went there with family and friends and we were appalled at the prices. The cheapest glass of wine was $12 but most were $15 or more. The cheese platter had 5 small pieces of bread and 3 very tiny bites of cheese. We ordered a bottle of wine, and 3 individual glasses of wine and one cheese platter. The bill was $175.00. I can't imagine what it would have cost if we ate a meal there.

Monday Steak Frites night - yum

By Alicedc |

Really sweet place complemented by the free flowing wine. Both the red and white were quite tasty. The steaks were great and the fries indulgently good. The chocolate dessert was the best but everyone enjoyed their choices including stinky cheese and apple cake. They even accommodated our vegetarian friend. Great neighborhood gem.

Don't miss it

By Ella923 |

If you find yourself on the west side of Austin--or actually just in Austin anywhere--go to Josephine's. The food is delicious; you can sit outside on the patio or on the front porch and enjoy the terrific quality of food and its presentation. Yes indeed--it is expensive. We spend $65 for lunch, which included two non-alcoholic beverages, a sandwich and a salad and the tip, but I would do it again in the proverbial heartbeat--it was that good. I just wouldn't or couldn't do it every day. The atmosphere is relaxed; the venue is very small, so be prepared for a wait if you go at peak times. The service is friendly and relaxed, but gets the job done. Park in the lot across the street on the side street.

Good "Special Day" Brunch

By Mariah C |

The first thing you notice about Josephine House is design. It's located in a quaint house; the inside is pristinely decorated with white, rustic decor. I could see why this place is so popular. It is small, but not overly so. Very intimate. The service was great. We walked in very under-dressed, since we wound up here on a whim, but we were still treated very well. I ordered the Coddled Egg, which was excellent. It comes with brioche, which I believe was made in house and was the right mixture of sweet and savory. The prices are the only hold up. The Coddled Egg was the cheapest meal on the menu, and while very well-prepared was not very filling. I also ordered French Press coffee, which was on the weaker side, but also more expensive than I've paid at similar restaurants. Overall, I would definitely recommend Josephine House for special occasions and more formal brunches. For regular brunches or a sudden case of the noms, I think you can get more "bang for your buck" elsewhere.

Perfect little gem

By Gul B |

Perfect Sunday brunch on a Monday morning! Here in Austin just for a week to try different restaurants and we ended up coming here twice. It's feels like nice French cafe, very nicely decorated with delicious food and friendly service. Definitely a must if you are in Austin!

"Tea room" type atmosphere; limited menu

By KarenfromChicago |

When we were sitting in this restaurant, my husband said he felt like he was in a tea room. I was sitting in a position where I could see all the tables, inside and out, and realized that the women:men ratio was 4:1. The menu is limited. The only vegetarian option was some vegetables in a bowl with an egg on top. It was OK. My husband ordered the pork chop. It had some kind of topping but he said there wasn't enough to give much flavor. Staff are pleasant. The place is not cheap. We did not return.

Great Breakfast

By Gregory T |

Very inventive with lots of choices; expensive, but worth it. Can be crowded on weekends. Week days may have a business group using the main room.

LOVE!!!!

By Soni417 |

My husband and I finally took our first trip to Austin and as I had heard many great things about Josephine House, I made a lunch reservation before we left. We ate in the later afternoon and had the place to ourselves…Was like being a guest in the home of the coolest, nicest people. The cottage is the cutest, most airy, chic space w/ a super charming outdoor dining area adjacent. Lunch was fresh and DELICIOUS and we enjoyed the best Pinot Noir Rose I have ever had. We loved it so much in fact, that we went back a second time on the way to the airport on our last day!

Lovely!

By Sepib0 |

This restaurant was one of the highlights of our dinning experience in Austin. As I am a vegetarian, I had the Josephine Rice Bowl and the Strawberry Upside-down Cake for desert. They were fresh and delicious. The service was excellent, and the restaurant itself is welcoming and quaint. We had to make a reservation and we were not rushed. There are very few tables at this restaurant and it has a very intimate feel. I'll definitely go back when I visit Austin again.

Perfect Location

By Franz S |

I love this Location!!! Service is friendly but bit slow... Long waiting Time for cocktails... Food is really Good!!!

Good drinks, mediocre food

By Neli |

My red snapper fit the description and was tasty, but the hamburger had a very hot and spicy spread underneath that drowned the rest of the flavors. The so called NY strip steak was too greasy for its name and too expensive a dish for the mere French fries that accompanied it. And those fries tasted older than the ones served with the burger. The chardonnay and the cocktail were of a quality expected in a good restaurant. The "espresso" was tepid and tasted like Nescafe instant coffee. We didn't dare to order a dessert.

ShOO fly don't bother me!

By Mis_Adventurous |

This is a really quaint lunch spot which has a lot of potential, but needs a little "help." First of all, the table situation is silly. Two of the tables for TWO obstruct walkways and would be better off removed. The FLY situation is BAD. We were seated by a window and took out 4 or 5 in a most lady-like and dainty fashion during the course of the meal. The waiter was . . . MEH . . . however, the food was really tasty. I think with a little more enthusiasm from the staff and a LOT fewer flies, this would be a really wonderful lunch location.

A Find for Those Who Can Find It

By Jiminsb |

Located in a residential neighborhood west of downtown, Josephine House is a truly a find for those who can find it. Home baked goods, both savory and sweet, filled our table. In most places, a bowl of oatmeal is just that. At Josephine’s, it was tinged with touch of crème fresh, a topped with a house made dried fruit based reduction. A blue cheese and bacon biscuit was inhaled by those fortunate to be offered a taste. Homemade breads were topped with sweets (homemade jam and ricotta) and savory (toast topped by smashed avocado with just a hint of lime), a meal unto itself.

Overrated

By Jero52691 |

We visited this restaurant because it was supposed to be one of the best in Austin. First of all, there is very limited parking. The surrounding businesses and residential areas are very hostile and will not hesitate to get you towed. Some of the locals were in their yards just waiting to pounce on anyone parking in their neighborhood . The restaurant is small and understated. There is some nice outdoor furniture for seat in the yard. The service was ok, not special. The cheese board was the best thing that we tried. The red snapper was bland and tasted like it had been frozen. The pork chop had a nice glaze but the meat was bland and almost raw inside. The problem with all of this is the price point. This is one of the most expensive restaurants in Austin, but the atmosphere and quality of the food is not at the level you would expect at these prices

New favorite lunch spot!

By lmoritz1 |

Dont know why I hadn't been here before but this a lovely spot with delicious food and excellent service! The burger definitely lives up to the hype. Wonderful coffee and dessert but also more sophisticated options like the chopped salad and pastrami and gruyere sandwich. Would definitely go there again.. want to try breakfast!

Good meal but evicted early

By jpatter1 |

Arrived on time for our reservation. Waited 25 min. Meal and service were very good until server collected our plates and said, "I would normally offer you dessert, but we have another reservation for this table at this time" and presented our check. Restaurant did not warn us of a time limit, and cut 25 minutes off our allowance on the front end. I appreciate the need to turn tables and avoid making folks wait, but I won't return because of this treatment.

Unique Tasty Restauran

By tripandtravel |

We had Sunday brunch here but I imagine any meal would be great. Unique menu items in an old house in central Austin. The brunch menu had typical brunch selections but all were prepared and served with a special flare. Well worth a try

Would return for a break in typical local Tex-mex or BBQ options.

By pedsnephron |

Great price for great food. Nice break from BBQ and Tex-Mex. Lover the pork schnitzel. Friendly staff. Great outdoor seating.

Spectacular dinner!

By Herb B |

Quaint house, wonderful service, intimate dining...fantastic food! Our table of six adults enjoyed many different items including steak, fish, desserts! Everything was perfectly prepared. Another Jeffery Group success! Dining options are both inside and outside - we avoided the summer heat and opted to enjoy everything inside!

Lunch with the Royal Tenenbaums

By Ryan Q |

Amazing ambiance, loved everything for the bouquets of local & seasonal bluebonnets, to the intimate dining area. The waitstaff was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly, plus the outfits were fabulous. The reviewer who said it looks like the uniforms are straight out of a Wes Anderson film nailed it. Seems like a fun tongue-in-cheek way of having an upscale lunch experience, without taking oneself too seriously. Best part was the food though. My Dad and I took the waiter's recommendations and they were great! Awesome bread basket, delicious beet salad, and, even though it sounded a little scary, we shared the beef tongue sandwich that was AWESOME. I had no idea beef tongue sandwich could just melt in your mouth, and the not too spicy sauce it was partially dipped in was divine. Wonderful experience all around.

Had the highest of high hopes, terrible service!!

By KM H |

I have wanted to like this place since first hearing about it. I love Clarksville, I loved the original Jefferies, the opening of something in this lunch/afternoon snacks/cocktails concept was too cool. The first time I tried to go, it was too crowded, and the person I was lunching with was hungrier than lite fare. So in a selfish attempt to try again, I scheduled a Happy Hour here. Our party arrived easily (note: there is a lot across the street for after 4pm parking, parking in Clarksville isn't easy!), were seated immediately at a lovely outdoor table, the atmosphere was stunning. We sat at 5:32 on the dot. Myself, and another person of our total 5 were presented a drink menu only when we were seated. My friend specifically asked our waitress for a food menu (as she was not drinking due to diet restrictions), and were told she'd "bring it right away." We ordered drinks and they arrived quickly, while we waited for the group. The rest of the party arrived at 5:45ish, and also ordered a round of drinks. I then--again--requested a food menu. Our waitress acted like she forgot "oops!" and left to get one. Or so we assumed.... Then, another person brought the rest of the table their drinks, and so we asked HIM for a food menu and he then informed us that, ..."the kitchen was closed, they close at 6pm, but they have bread?" (ohhh, bread??! well why didn't you say so? me and lil tim over here haven't noshed in days!) I and the original person who requested the menu were slightly miffed. I then got up to go to the restroom inside, only to watch the whole kitchen staff take shots of a dark brown liquid (bourbon?) and pick up full plates of food to eat what was clearly a staff meal. No wonder the kitchen was closed. Closed for their private dinner. As they downed their shots, they cheered "SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST!" Leaving me to only assume that this restaurant is so good and doing so well, they don't need to take in a table of 5 people, each having a cocktail, glass of wine, times 2 and snacks? (a bill that likely for 1/2 hour would have exceeded $150 w/o tip...) Either way. THE one cocktail I did have, their Fruit Cocktail... cocktail was great. Complex flavors and still very refreshing. Dangerously refreshing for bourbon even... And food? The food LOOKS incredible. Hell, even the bread looked pretty great when I walked by it inside. Thing is, Larry McGuire restaurants, while pricey, never disappoint. So, what I'm saying is, I'll probably come back, but I'm gonna be pissy about the pissy waitstaff when I do. Maybe don't go there if you don't want to be treated like your business isn't important? Just sayin'... Pony up, Josephine's, or know your locals won't come back...AND we'll tell our friends.

Monday Steak Frites Night

By pillowsofwanderlust |

I read about Josephine House and sister (brother?) restaurant Jeffrey's in Bon Appetit magazine. I could not try both, so I opted for Josephine. Both are in Clarksville in a mostly residential area. Josephine actually appears to have once been a cute residential bungalow. While Jeffrey's is a classic steakhouse with a popular bar, Josephine offers breakfast, lunch and dinner plus weekend brunch with indoor seating and a shaded outdoor patio. I came on a Monday, which is Steak Frites night. I ordered a refreshing cocktail called Josephine House Fruit Cup before being informed wine is included on Steak Frites Night. The Monday menu is 3 courses with multiple options for all three. The price is based on what entree you choose; on this night, it was $40 for beef tartare or shrimp up to $65 for a ribeye. I chose the ribeye. The bread basket is yummy with 3 types. My first course was a chicken liver mousse with black currants and arugula salad--delish! I've yet to have a mousse or pate I haven't liked, and have been ordering them regularly since I suddenly became obsessed with them late last year. The ribeye, a 13 oz. prime boneless cut, was perfectly fine; I had leftovers. The frites were hot and crisp, served with a house-made aioli. They won't be insulted if you ask for ketchup. I overheard another table offered house-made steak sauce. My dessert was a lovely passion fruit tart with blackberries. On Mondays, there is a DJ in the patio. A cute, charming and delicious place. I would have liked to have tried other meals here (brunch is very popular), and would have liked to have tried Jeffrey's restaurant and/or bar as well. But with only 3 nights in Austin, I had to make difficult choices!

Great food

By Jkdcc |

We went as a group of 7 friends for brunch and were very happy with the food. The restaurant is a fun and cute setting. Our only negative was the lack of warmth from Our waitstaff and positive feedback. We would go back.

Delightful brunch spot

By Vickie S |

Today was one of those days that make Austin such a great place to live. The weather was gorgeous- which made the experience at Josephine House all the better. My friend and I did not have reservations, but arrived at opening at 11:00 a.m. We were seated immediately on the patio, but warned someone had reserved the table for 12:45. We had a leisurely brunch. I started with a croissant and we both had a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. We both had the coddled egg, which was smooth and perfectly accented with ham. We decided to share a dessert, which was also very good. Service was prompt and not intrusive. I noticed our time was "up." We were not done talking and enjoying the beautiful day, so we moved out front, where the waitstaff was kind enough to bring us water, even though we were "après" meal.

Super Overpriced!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Marta Garraus Young |

We went for brunch and the food was nice. Nothing to die for but nice. The place is beautiful and the service is excellent. What was crazy for me is to pay $70 per person for one dish, and a couple of mimosas. We were a party of 8 people, but again I question myself: What's going on with these restaurants? For $70 per person I expect change of silverware, appetizers, bottles of wine, very very nice food. To pay 70$ for cava Not Champagne, a fried egg on top of a toast with beans and cheese I think it is a disparate. I ordered the Short Rib Hash and I didn't love it. Sorry! The place is lovely and service too, but again, they may reconsider their prices or add some truffle and exquisite items on the menu!!!!

Great Local Dining

By Mary Beth C |

Josephine House is a charming, small restaurant in the Clarksville neighborhood in historic West Austin. The setting is lovely and the food is delicious.

Very poor showing

By barretta |

I found where the feeling that 'they were doing you a favor to allow you to eat there' went from Jeffrey's - across the street to Josephine House. Grumpy server, food served bordering on cold, we felt hurried to finish up so they could turn the table.

Do NOT be fooled - RESERVATIONS REQUIRED AT LUNCH - and they close before 3:00

By 56003lee |

Drove into Austin on a Friday afternoon to meet a friend at Josephine House for a late lunch. Arrived at 2:00 p.m. Pulled up and was excited to see quite a few tables outside that were vacant as it was a lovely afternoon. We were immediately turned away as they said they do not take walk ups. Really, we asked? Have dined before without reservations. We mentioned that it was well before closing and they had many tables empty. NOPE. Website clearly says reservations recommended - not required. Too many good restaurants in Austin that provide superb service. They lost our business.

Just Perfect!

By gnatpew |

We were looking for a special place to take our adult children to breakfast while in Austin. My wife heard about Josephine House from a write up in Remodelista. We decided to give it a go. Everything about the experience was perfect. The French press coffee was quality, the food was thoughtfully prepared and the pastries were to die for. The outdoor seating provided the exact ambience we were looking for. Looking forward to going again next time we are in town.

Small, quaint house with fresh and delicious food!

By Discerning12385 |

The wait staff and front of the house are excellent. Probably graduate students from UT-Austin, and they're very adept. Warm reception, great service and delicious homemade food. I'm a chocolate snob, and their chocolate bouchon was the perfect bit. The burger came rare, as requested, and the fries were hot and yummy. Not too expensive and very welcoming. Definitely coming back on my next trip!

Walk into Magnolia Market in Austin!

By mavsfan2016 |

Josephine House is darling! The house looks very much like a Joanna Gaines design (Fixer Upper fans get this) and is very small. This is a vibrant, happy and well designed restaurant. You can sit inside or out although it is hot inside and they admitted they have an AC issue. We had a delightful brunch and enjoyed the menu. It is small but everything sounds delicious so how can you go wrong? We started with the burrata and fruit with honey. Just get it! Don't hesitate. Yum! I ordered the fruit bowl and my friend ordered a burger (perfectly cooked - thank you!) with an egg on top. Both were so good. We couldn't resist a cappuccino and some cookies to go to finish. Service was good - it was busy and we never felt like we were forgotten or had to wait too long to get what we needed. I love this place! Dont forget to make a reservation!!

Come here often?

By Kate C |

If you don't come here often, you should. I sat on their from porch and had this amazing charcuterie board with chicken liver mousse, jeffrey's pate, and Olli Salame Molisana while sipping on L'Oliveto white wine... Great ambiance and friendly staff.

Lovely Brunch!

By deldicque |

Adorable restaurant with a ton of character and ambiance. Heuvos rancheros were delicious and the lemon ricotta pancakes should not be missed.

3.5 Nice lunch in a cute house

By Travelwonder24 |

Had a delicious heirloom tomato and bacon open-faced sandwich with greens on the side. Restaurant is pretty noisy when full. Parking was difficult to find.

Decent food in up and coming area

By Ovrdhill |

Visited on a rainy day in early May for late lunch/early dinner on recommendation of locals. Food was pretty good, service average. Cute and casual place with limited seating, old house converted to new southern shabby chic. Tried their version of bloody mary with beer instead of vodka--too salty of a mix for my palate to really enjoy, but definitely different. Food variety good--and not heavy on BBQ or meat typical of many Austin restaurants.

Great lunch!!

By Leo T |

Sat outside on a cool fall day. Had the cheese board, a bottle of wine and the tortilla soup. Great food and atmosphere!!

Good but not good value and LOUD

By ButBeuatiful |

I was excited about trying our this restaurant as I LOVE Jeffrey's next door, a partner restaurant. While I really liked my crab cake, my husband his tasty burger, and the meager wine pours, I thought what we spent was way out of line with what we got. But, the real downside here for me was that it was cold and we couldn't dine out. the room was ridiculously loud and not what I want when I spend a lot of money on a fancy meal. So, I'd have to say, be willing to spend a lot if you're having wine and sit on the patio.

Great for lunch with the girls!!

By jennifersN6023MI |

Amazing warm chicken salad!! Hope it is always on the menu! Filling and healthy!! Great staff and very spot on!

5 star breakfast ❤️ 3 star Dinner..... 🙄

By Nickey D |

This is an awesome restaurant for lunch or breakfast. I had the steak and eggs which was extremely delicious. 5 star breakfast all day. On Monday nights they have Steak night, 3 star experience. Although the steaks were good I didn't like FRENCH FRIES as my only option for a side. I'm willing to pay $60 + for a great steak but FRENCH FRIES go against my healthy choice meter. They serve complimentary wine with dinner....as much as you can drink, which is awesome but it gets crazy loud indoors so bring your party attitude on Mondays :) I love you Family ❤️ @NickeyDuke

A wonderful place for brunch!!

By Verónica P |

This was such a great discovery!! The place itself is beautiful, tastefully decorated, the service is impeccable and the food outstanding, from the tea to the goodies & dessert after a fantastic meal!! Many many thanks to the staff, specially the Manager, for having made our brief stay in Austin an unexpected delightful journey!

Delightful Lunch Spot

Went here with our son and his wife for a nice lunch as we were visiting Austin. My wife had the rice bowl and I had Josephine House's well regarded burger and fries. My son and his wife ordered a rice bowl and a grilled cheese sandwich. Pleasant, open and airy inside with simple, uncomplicated lines in the furnishings and decor. Service was pleasant, effective and knowledgeable. Food was tasty, with some unique touches but wholly recognizable...e.g., the hamburger with grilled onions looked like one as did the grilled cheese and the "frites" were good fries. A very pleasant lunch with tasty food and excellent service. Would come again.

Unfortunate service

By jayhawks91 |

The food was good, but a pretty limited menu. The service was HORRIBLE. It took forever to have our other taken, we finally asked another server to take it. He never checked on us, didn't know what kinds of vodka they had, we had to ask for water, etc. He was just bad. Thankfully the atmosphere was great and the food was decent.

Just ok food

By dmbodden |

The ingredients are good, but the seasoning… lacking. I guess they want to cook healthy, but a bit more garlic, onions or peppers wouldn’t hurt anyone. The prices are normal, for Austin. But if you know a bit of cooking, most likely you will do better yourself, and you would save your money. We had the steak, the snapper and the pasta. The alioli for the fries was the only thing we liked very much. Service is good and the place is pretty. Although they do have to clean the lamps in the dining room. They look moldy.

Best Brunch in Austin

By Tricia T |

Great find! It's very small, maybe a total of 5-8 tables inside (more tables outside) but it guarantees your food comes out fresh and you can tell the chefs put love and thought into the preparation. Wonderful assortment of fresh breads & pastries. You got to try the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes! Like I said it's small so you need to make a reservation in advance or get there at least 30 minutes before they open like I did (unless you don't mind sitting outside). Around 5 minutes before they opened there was already a line of 5+ people waiting.

Delicious brunch

By Laura B |

We had a fantastic brunch at Josephine’s - four girlfriends. Great food, good drinks. The only “ding” was that we ordered a last brunch cocktail and it took forever to come. They did the right thing and didn’t charge us for it. The Kouign Amann pastry was really, really, really good.

Delightful little lunch near Jeffrey's and Cipollina

By Liz S |

A friend took me here for lunch one day last week. Lovely menu and beautifully presented counter full of salads and treats to tempt you. I had the burger, which was delicious. I am embarrassed at how quickly I ate it to tell the truth. Not a lot of parking in the lot and can be a little noisy, but nothing to really bother about if you are prepared in advance.

Freezing and disappointment

By Mabelugue |

So disappointed! We ate at the bar in a freezing indoor instead of a sunny table outside which was supposed to be not available.

Lovely restaurant but food disappointed

By kikirob |

Super excited to try but the food was kind of disappointing. We tried huevos rancheros $16, summer scafata $22 and breakfast burger &20 but they were average. Lemon ricotta pancakes $18 were amazing however. Very very expensive. The house is so charming but not sure I'd go back.

Charming breakfast spot

By 29Lorenzo |

We were in town for an extended weekend with friends and came here for both brunch and breakfast. We loved it! Most interesting menu both times. Excellent Stumptown coffee (hello, Portland!) Had a delicious rice bowl with vegetables for brunch with a fantastic basket of breads. One of the most interesting entrée items ever with an interesting combination of seasonings, textures and tastes (pickled cucumbers) in one bowl. The opinion as to the quality of the food was unanimous within our party of 4 such that we came back for breakfast the very next day when we sat outside under a beautiful tree. Service is excellent and responsive. This is not an inexpensive place, but we felt it was a very good value given the high level of detail that was evident in the cooking, menu choices, cutlery, glassware, furniture selection, and setting. Just remarkable and unique.

Bachelorette brunch

This restaurant is so quaint and perfect for brunch. The pastries are delicious and the Migas are to die for. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Delicious brunch!

I really enjoyed a fresh pot of coffee with lemon ricotta pancakes and got to taste some wonderful huevos rancheros on a delicious tostada.

Quality Food

By Linda S |

The exceptional food was perfect for sharing 3 courses of the burrata, the big chop salad and the branzino. We visited during happy hour and were delighted that the food was half price. We were able to pair the food with great wines by the glass for $2 off. Assorted bakery items satisfied our sweet tooth for dessert. The place was lively but the noise level was just right and we could easily carry on a conversation.

Tastefully casual

By Lynn P |

Casual neighborhood dining and easier to find a table than Jeffrey’s. The food is well prepared and the service is friendly. Had a few minutes wait for a table even with a reservation and we enjoyed a pleasant interlude at the small bar area.

Awkward Overpriced Menu with Lots of White People

By vivian w |

All the waiters appear to be preppy white men with excellent grooming. The people who eat here are all white, botoxed, bleached and from the Tarrytown realtor set. The menu is weird. The portion sizes are off. The chicken dish sold at lunch has enough chicken for 4 people and costs $28. It's served with some pasta but no vegetables or salad. So to make the meal more balanced you would need the $12 salad or soup. There's very little parking, it's extremely noisy and it's basically a drag for anyone who isn't a social climber. Better places can be found all over Austin (less expensive, better food, balanced meals and healthier).

Based on phone experience

By CharlotteAmalie |

I have not visited this place but believe that phone service should be excellent as well. I crossed them off my list as a holiday dining option strictly based on my experience over the phone. The woman that answered gave me the impression that she had better things to do than talk to me about their holiday hours and menu. Sure didn't want to have that same atmosphere for holiday dining.

Ehhh..

By cmoonie |

Overpriced. Fancy-pantsy, and I love a fancy-pantsy place but this is nothing special. Cheese board was average. Wine was sparse pour. Lived here for years and just don't find this a special place.

Great Lemon ricotta pancakes

By Laquita S |

Some of the best light and fluffy pancakes I’ve had ever with the lemon flavor ...I had a short stack of 2 pancakes for $9 and I believe an egg and chicken sausage was another $9 ...definitely over priced for a brunch spot

Super cool environment

By Anton Jónas |

Went there with a couple of friends and had a great time. Sat outside which was great but the inside is even better. The food was really good which justified the price. Had the Shrimp salat, give it my honest recommendation. Staff was really nice

Superb dinner

By Great Pyrenees Lover |

Josephine House is an absolute gem. There is so much to like about our experience. The neighborhood, the building and ambience, the service and the terrific food. Nestled away off of Enfield Road, this utterly charming restaurant impressed me in so many ways. The service was outstanding and the food was delicious. We had a cheese plate to share and also a steak frites to share, which was more than enough for two. Beyond the great cocktails, the steak frites was awesome. Perfectly cooked, huge portion size and amazing homemade steak sauce. Loved it. There were also nice touches throughout the restaurant. The candles, the fragrant flower arrangements on the tables, the bathroom hand soap. They really did not skip any details. One of my favorite meals since moving to Austin. Deserving of five stars in every way.

A small french restaurant with a well done limited menu

By PAC Texas |

We ventured into Josephine House early on a Friday night with no reservation. The small dining room only holds about 24 people so you need a reservation to ensure an inside table. However, there was seating outside (with heaters on an early March evening) or at the small bar (only 4 seats). We opted for the bar. We each had a glass of delicious wine and ordered the bread basket with butter and one selection of cheese. The bread that came with butter was a simple bread but the bread that came with the cheese was a rye with walnuts and raisins, and was so delicious. I ordered the mussels and my husband the hamburger. The menu is small - you either order alacarte or a prix fixe menu that is $40. If we had been hungrier the prix fixe menu would have been wonderful. Our food was all very well done, and delicious. Perfect sized helpings, not huge and not small. Our service was good and the manager stopped by to chat. I would recommend Josephine house for an intimate couple's dinner out, or a dinner with friends where you would like to talk in a quieter setting. They do breakfast during the week (would be amazing, I think), brunch on the weekends, and dinner 6 nights a week (not Sunday).

Great French breakfast experience

By Traveler K |

we went to this restaurant on a Sunday morning without having a reservation. place opens at 10am so get there early to find a table. (staff will offer you an inside table without reservation). food and pastries were great. i asked for a coffee with soy milk, coffee came pretty cold with almond milk (they didn't offer soy milk). overall experience was very good. i will definitely suggest to go and try. place very well maintained and staff is very friendly.

Okay but,

By Gary T |

This was our first dine in experience since Covid became a thing. We arrived on time with a reservation and were promptly seated outside in a social distanced location. After a significant wait we ordered a house burger medium rare but not bleeding, a chopped chicken salad and a Huevos Racheros . After a long wait we got our food and the salad and eggs were a hit. The burger on the other hand was quite bloody. Not my thing so a three review. It also took quite some time to get a water refill and the check.

Great food, beautiful place

By Rodrigo V |

The perfect place for a Sunday brunch, everything I tasted was pretty amazing and the location is really beautiful

Good value and quality

By drmader |

Quaint spot in Clarksville , it was very hot outdoors so that distracted from the meal actually so pay attention when booking where u want to sit .. to be sure where you want to sit. Tiny little house. Parking is also tight in the neighborhood so we would take an Uber next time because it’s a bit. Of a walk for us..had the cucumber salad and snapper , lovely wine and my husband had forbidden rice chicken bowl . Food was all very tasty w nice portions , beautiful presentation and timely. Service dropped off at check time which was a bummer again because we were sooo hot and ready to go. Misters would probably help outdoors here

Amazing in Austin

By Leah J |

Charming and amazing!! I had the rice bowl and I absolutely loved it. I highly recommend here for breakfast. You will regret missing it.

Great location good food

By Davemarino M |

An innovative and friendly atmosphere. Some great soups on the menu here accompanied with some very fresh bread. My wife enjoyed Jo's House Fruit Cup, the favorite, made with rye whiskey, muddled lemon, lime, orange, mint, and cucumber. Well recommended.

Valentine's Day treat

By Sarah M |

We enjoyed a pre-set menu for Valentine's Day. We sat inside and had an early setting with a view table. It was lovely.

Fresh as a Breeze

By Ingridmcq |

Austin is my special little place been travelling there for yonks , I av witnessed the evolution off the restaurant experience thanks to a certain Larry Mc Guire , guys a genuis , all his food stops are top Notch ! So back to Josrphine s , food is so fresh very local produce used and the wines are so good , there s something to accompanying all foods which is fab ! I had the radish Salad and a glass of Pinot very light and healthy on a very heavy day just what ya want ! I recommend u sit outside if possible it's like sitting on your mates front lawn very cosy . Our waiter Toner was a tad bit slow but a little dream boat and super friendly . My only problem with JH s is the pricing , it's too pricy for what your getting , fresh organic doesn't always have to equate into big bucks , maybe I am spoiled coming from Ireland !!!! Go if your in that hood ( Clarkesville ) u will be very happy u did , I brought my son emilio (6 months ) very child friendly 💋

Avoid this place

By pattydiaz1 |

I went to visit my nieces and we were a party of 4, we try to get a table for lunch. They never were honest! They kept us waiting saying as soon as a table is free they will sit us, people finish left new ones came and sat and kept us saying the same story for 45 minutes, what's that mean? I felt we were not welcome!

They could care if you come

By Ticson |

Sorry but this is my 3rd third visit here. This time someone said it's nice and good drinks. Have to say patio is nice. Well Wednesday @3PM there was 3 servers & 2 customers and then 4 of us. They say us got water 3 waters for the 4 of us. The servers went to the bar to taste wine. Anyhow, after 15 min I said I wouldn't wait anymore. Then o remembered the same thing happened last time I was there @6 months ago. Well we told them we were leaving and they said "bye" Got to love places that are so good they don't have to serve the customer. Sorry never again

lovable

Very nice and cozy location, both indoor and outdoor tables. Very kind staff, very tasty food and drinks.

It was ok but didn't live up to the hype

By gmcnab |

First off, our group ended up getting seated on the front lawn which was only half covered by the sun. So half of us were melting. The food was good, but the portions were small and took forever to come out (we waited over half an hour even after telling them we had a deadline). All in all, there are places closer to downtown for the same money or less that aren't as pretentious.

Great food

By barbrw99 |

Three of us had dinner here to celebrate a college graduation. We all had delicious dinners. My husband had pork chops which were the best I have ever tasted. They were smoked and were so tasty. Two of us had tri tips which were also delicious. The green beans with the steak were tender and delicious. We tried three desserts as well. The buttermilk pie was creamy and tasted great. The upside down strawberry shortcake was good as well. Chocolate panda cotta tasted like chocolate mousse. Homemade ice cream came with two of the desserts and it was unique. Basil ice cream and lemon poppy seed were both wonderful to try. I would eat here again.

Neighborhood gem

By Stephen F |

we ate hear the other evening with our son who lives in the neighborhood. Josephine House is associated with Jeffrey's next door. We were able to choose from their more diverse wine list for a perfect accompaniment(s) to our meal. The staff was knowledgeable about the food and wine. We never felt rushed and took advantage of a beautiful, post storm, cool evening. I have no doubt this place is packed on weekends as there was a steady flow of patrons the entire time we were there. We will be back!!
