Josephine St. Café is not “fine dining” … it’s where you go to enjoy the vitality and friendliness of an eclectic downtown San Antonio … rustic interior with uneven wooden floors and walls add to the dining experience … a great place to stop for a late lunch or early dinner (the lunch hour can get crowded so come early or later) … good food and very polite and efficient servers … Elva is awesome! … menu selections are varied and prices very reasonable … the mashed potatoes & gravy with the chicken-fried chicken breast is so good! … for an appetizer, the tomatillo & avocado salsa is to die for! (The picture on Trip Advisor is a little dated … the next-door tall white building in the background is no longer there … it was once the old Liberty Bar which leaned so much, it had to be removed!) John & Angella San Antonio

Visited on a Saturday around 5 and had to circle the block once to find parking. (It's a popular area so plan accordingly.) We lucked out by getting booth seating because the other option was was a table in the middle where all the seating is close together. The atmosphere and menu is tailored for adults (no kid's menu) so mine got full on queso and spinach & artichoke dip with chips. I got the 9oz rib-eye with mashed potatoes while Hubs got the 12oz with fries. Between the lemon butter and seasoning, these were the BEST steaks we've ever had from an establishment. The fries look more like potato pancakes and I wasn't a fan but everything else was good.

Tuesday evening with coworkers arrived at 5:00p; all members of party must be present to be seated; no reservations accepted. The building does not appear to be a place you would want to dine in but don’t be mistaken ... the steaks are very good and reasonably priced. Enjoyed our meals with friendly service from all but the manager — who did not want pictures taken inside! Will visit again.

Great Atmosphere. Our food ticket was not given to the kitchen. we waited for over an hour and one member from our table got up and asked the waitress if there was a problem. She realized she didn't turn it in and then a fellow (manager maybe) came to our table and said he would comp the whole meal. Super nice people and the food, OMG the chicken fried steak was nice and crispy not oily, the mashed potatoes had bits of potato in them and tasted excellent. They give you an onion ring on top of your mashed potato and the crust was seasoned perfectly. Definitely going back. I'm not a big fan of the Chicken fried steak but now I am!

Funky little place with good food. We got there at around 11:30 for lunch and by 12 it was full. It's got a small bar and outside seating. Is it me or is that floor slanted? Go back? Yes!

We thought we'd try the best chicken fried steak in town. And it was! Fresh hand battered just right. The size is medium which is perfect for not overeating. I had the mashed potatoes w gravy as my side. Excellent potatoes & a large portion at that. We both had the top shelf margaritas which were delicious. Hmmm. For our appetizer we tried the sausage w queso. That was spectacular. We can't wait to go back. The fried catfish looked & smelled so good from the table next to us. That's what I plan on trying next....

We went for dinner and happy hour on Friday evening. We had a great time! Service was great and food was even better. Everything was fresh and delicious. We loved the atmosphere and the old house. We will definitely come back!

This is a really great place to stop in and take a break. Great food and friendly atmosphere. The cool thing is a 500 year old tree growing in the middle of it. The steak salad was very good. Order the onion rings! They are super awesome, crunchy, crispy rings. The steam and shrimp is very good. Chicken friend steak was very tasty. Liver and onions- if you like liver and onions it is one of the best plates to get with the mashed potatoes. everyone is very nice and friendly. Stop in here hungry!

When I saw the sign while headed for the trendy Pearl District, called out to friends, “That is where we had the best chicken tried steak ever 20 years ago.” Still got it. Loved the chicken fried, with mashed potatoes, of course. We started with margaritas, all round. Not usually my drink of choice, but these were big and bold, just right. This is old Texas at its finest. You can also get other steaks, which friends avowed are tasty. Sit on the patio ... too noisy inside.

Loud and noisy but a very clean establishment with a good ‘ol boy ambiance. Texas size steaks that are cooked to perfection and melt in your mouth. Very friendly and fast service. Lots of smiles no matter what you ask for. They aim to please. Desserts that will make you think you’ve died and gone to heaven. Really. Great beer selections from a full bar...a variety of domestics to a few international brands. Excellent scotch whiskey’s, mixed drinks and more. We enjoyed this friendly, laid back establishment so much we returned again within our three day stay in San Antonio. It’s a small place with limited seating but the wait is so worth it. Patio dining available for overflow.

My wife and I had our first date here and we come back to the restaurant all the time. The food is good and the prices are reasonable but service does lack some though. It would make it a more interesting experience if the wait staff came around more often to refresh our drinks rather than to have to be waving them down.

Josephine Street is a San Antonio gem. Not fancy, unpretentious but such charm with fresh food. I ate “ unhealthy “ & their Chicken Fried steak is one of the tops in South Texas. I too 2 friends who’ve never been & they loved it.

As I always do, I will preface this with I have experience as a restaurant owner. This is a small venue that has obviously done very well (line out the door). However, the owners or management have done very little to make those customers waiting comfortable in any way. Standing at the bar packed in like sardines and the waiters bumping you every time they went by was ridiculous. We had with us a very elderly gentleman that needed to sit and they could have cared less. They have a host of sorts but he was unaware that there people waiting for their checks for almost 1/2 an hour which made our wait an hour and a half which it didn't need to be. There were 2 empty tables right next to each other when we came in but when I asked why they couldn't be put together I was told because it was in two separate server sections. Are you kidding me? In my restaurant they would have each waited on four people and split the tip. It's not rocket science! They don't have to worry about the experience of the diner because they have more patrons then they know what to deal with. Pack 'em in they are not concerned about quality or cleanliness. The waiters were all angry and annoyed the entire evening bumping people out of the way. No "excuse me" was heard. I finally pointed out to the host all the tables that didn't have their checks and we got seated. Food was average, decent but not worth what we went through.

First The margaritas we're the best I have ever had. The onion rings were very good the fries were very good but the steak was not as well as I make it home. I had to order pie which was the apple crisp the raspberry pecan and the because all alamode. The pie made it worth the trip also. Small crowded place very nice atmosphere.

We had high hopes for this place but they were dashed quite quickly. Let’s start with appetizers- onion rings that were not seasoned at all and tasted old. I wasn’t sure why we had a small plate of stale white bread, butter and crackers on the table as well, odd to say the least. The steaks that we ordered medium rare first came out well done, for a $30+ steak we figured it would have a little blood. Second time, the inside was blue and seared on the outside. Our server was great, the only good part of this experience. They tried, I guess.

We went to Josephine Street wanting a good steak. We were disappointed. My steak was under cooked. There was no seasoning on the steak at all. All they did was throw a piece of meat on the grill. There wasn't much choice in sides and your meat only came with one so your salad cost $4 extra. The service was good but the food wasn't anything to really enjoy.

A must do in San Antonio if looking for great food! Usually lots of parking, awesome staff and food is really great. Inside seating is a little tight but worth it.

Had not been here for a few years! But as good as in the past! Our server Alyssa took excellent care of us! Went with something I had not had in a longtime: Liver and onions! For those who like this dish you will enjoy it here! We also had the chicken fried chicken which was very enjoyable! The green beans are excellent and the cole slaw was great too! Go have some home cooking!

It’s been years since I’ve been here and I can say it has not changed a bit. A great place for family and drinks.

Really enjoyed the fish and apple pie . The atmosphere was great as well. Sangria was good as well. D

Got the call to meet some family at a steak house just a few minutes down the road where I was staying. A quick check of the place revealed it was worth the time so I agreed to meet up with them here. Access to the restaurant is very easy and the parking is just to the left of the front under the overpass of what I believe to be Highway 281. Just south of this place is the Pearl which is another popular destination in San Antonio. It was 730pm and we had a 45 minute wait after checking in. While there was not much waiting area available inside the certainly was some room outside in teh patio area. Some picnic like table seating with heat lamps about it was doable despite the cooler temps while we waited. We were allowed to enjoy alcoholic drinks in this area. While we waited their was a very consistent ebb and flow of customers coming and going so this place is clearly a favorite among locals. Once inside it was what appeared to be an early house near the central area of San Antonio. It was gutted on the inside to make room for the restaurant. The floor is very uneven inside due to the large tree that grew in the middle of it or what may have been the porch area at one point in time. The old root system appears to have pushed up the boards somewhat. The top of the tree was cut off at one point in time so there is no foliage towering above the place. Just simply a large trunk leading to the roof. The tables and chairs are fairly simple. You will need to be very careful with the tables as the floor is so uneven and the tables will rock significantly if you are not careful in some parts of the establishment. There were a number of times a drink was nearly spilled or tossed because of this. The waitress was kind enough to get us a wedge to help with that issue. The menu is simple but it does have quite a few options with a good selection of steaks. The bacon wrapped steak appears to be a favorite. They also have burgers, fish and a pretty good selection of comfort foods with traditional southern sides. I will say the food overall is pretty good. The steak did not overwhelm me with the anticipated awesomeness I heard so much about but it was good. They did have a "wedge salad" that is not listed on the menu that my family shared and I will tell you that it was one of the most appetizing salads I have ever seen. It is on some "secret menu" and when I go back I will be asking for one of these salads. The staff was friendly, food was served quick and the place was clean. You will not walk away hungry unless you intend to. The quality of the food is good. They do appear to have a kind of bar on the back wall. This location is worth a repeat visit when and if I run out of new establishments to discover in San Antonio. I did read and hear about some opportunity about parking here, eating a meal, jumping on a spurs bus and getting a ride to and from the game for free saving you from some apparently ridiculous parking fees. If you eat well enough here you will be less inclined to waste money on overpriced concessionaires at the game.

There are many places in San Antonio to grab a steak dinner but, this is one of the best ones. Maybe because the menu is centered around steaks. Whatever the reason, we come here a few times a year and have never had a bad dinner. The drinks are another story. Stick to the basics. Have a beer or glass of wine and enjoy the meal. There are numerous places within walking distance to get a very good cocktail but very few in town to get a great steak at an affordable price.

Really nice surprise. We were in the area looking for a place to eat and stumbled across Josephine St. The door said "Steak & Whiskey" and that got my attention. We had the 7oz filet and the filet burger. Both were really good, we will go back. Very reasonable prices, the above were about $13 each. Steaks, Chicken Fried Steak, Chicken Fried Chicken, Grilled Chicken, Salads, great sides.

This place has been there for a long time. There is a tree growing inside, so that makes for a very angular floor. Walks slowly, but enjoy, as it is part of the atmosphere!! Had the chicken fried steak!!! It is one of the mail foods. The onion rings were good, too.

Food is always good as is service. This is one of our go to spots and we are never let down. The tree in the center of the room is such a great staple in the restaurant. The ONLY reason I gave 4 out of 5- is because it is a little cramped when busy. LOVE this place!

Reminds us of a tiny Scholz Garden of Austin, TX fame:,- a very old building with a huge tree growing so much it has lifted the wood floors near the front entrance. And a small outside patio with listing fans Being from LA where it is almost impossible to find good chicken fried steak- I usually try it if it is on the menú. Josephine Street’s is amazingly inexpensive($11) and good enough to satisfy my chicken fried steak need fix —,but also not in the top 10 in Texas. We will return though to try other things in the menú

I had read reviews for this place before coming, as I always do, yet we were left pretty disappointed. My wife and I both order 7oz sirloin steaks and I got grilled shrimp. The steaks were incredibly bland. Instead of thinking "mmm I'm eating steak I thought "this some kind of food in my mouth" I seriously can't stress how bland they were. The shrimp was good albeit not incredibly flavorful and the chips and salsa we got were pretty tasty. Other than that, I'd say it was a big waste of money. I shouldn't pay $35 and get incredibly bland steak.

We came across this place by accident and it was a blessing! Quaint place with great drinks and steaks. The french fries are the best I’ve ever had! We sat on the patio with a heater. Perfect evening. ❤️

This is one of the very best steakhouses in SA and very popular with the locals for many reasons. The steaks here are always great and the chefs cook them perfectly. The menu is big so there is something for everyone here. The steak prices are amazing considering the quality of the steaks and they come with two sides (sold separately at the expensive steakhouses) of your choice. You can easily spend three or four times for the same meal at one of the expensive steakhouses (most of which are way over priced in my opinion). The restaurant is in a building over a hundred years old so it has a lot of character but it is small and gets crowded and loud. Go before the dinner hour if you can. They are now open seven days a week.

Saw the neon signs out front -Steak & Whisky - and had to go. Great Steak and a wide range of libations. Mashed potatoes with gravy were awesome. The tree growing thru the middle of the dining room was super cool. Busy place!

I had the best chicken breast ever here! It was marinated in something, anyway it was sooo tender and tasty! My husband had the steak and shrimp, very good according to him. Daughter had trout, huge serving and also delicious This is a real casual place. Unusual tree trunk growing inside but it was stated they cut the top off some years back, so it is not seen from outside. Good service the night we were there. We would go back there again when in San Antonio.

This was recommended to us by the lady at the rental car counter and it did not disappoint! The jalapeño poppers were described by one member of the party as the “best he’s ever had”. I ordered the chicken fried chicken breast and it was juicy and delicious. Others ordered steaks and also raved about them. I highly recommend this for a true southern restaurant.

Looking for a place off the River Walk so our taxi driver suggested this place. It's quirky with a tree growing in the restaurant and floors that slope! We actually sat outside on picnic tables. Good menu selection, home made food and very reasonable prices.

Just a very enjoyable dining experience. Exceptional character in this place, feel immediately welcome. We had steak and pork chops prepared so that they were “signature” - the beef had a lemon butter (?) added and the pork came with a white cream sauce. Both were delish. Pecan pie with ice cream closed out the fantastic meal. Our server Edali (sp?) was just the best. Friendly, efficient and just fun.

Josephines offers a unique dining experience. Located in a building from the early 1900s, it sits on the edge of the street. Once you’re inside you will be greeted by a warm and friendly ambience with very open seating. They offer daily specials each day. Our family of five try to variety of dishes including the chop steak, grilled chicken, and pork chops. We done and on the wilted salad which was absolutely amazing, home fries which I highly recommended & onion rings. The service was very good for the entire visit. The prices are very moderate and reasonable. If you were visiting San Antonio, I would highly recommend having a meal at Josephines

I succeeded in getting a cousin of mine to try a non chain restaurant! This was my fourth time to eat here and it’s always good! We had the sausage and grilled onions and Queso that was delicious. I had the pollo verde entree, a real thin chicken breast, still had skin on one side and delicious sauce on top with a side of loaded mashed potatoes. My cousin had the huge chicken fried steak and she ate every bit of it and stated she wants to go back and try something else soon!

What a great little place! My steak was outstanding and the broccoli done to perfection. It’s a quirky building but with a warm feel. The staff were super attentive and friendly and accommodating. Good wine list. Best meal of our trip so far.

It has great character and charm! In 1906 this was Finke's Meat Market and the owners turned it into the restaurant. They restored the old buildings with their revitalization of Gruene Hall and creation of The Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar, in Gruene Historic District in the 70's. There is a 500 year-old tree in the middle of the restaurant and the floor is uneven (beware if you are challenged on uneven walking areas!) The rib-eye was very good, our USDA Premium 12 oz. New York Strip was very tender but unfortunately lacked in flavor(sometimes that is the case.) All our sides were great and dessertsq were wonderful! Our waitress was very attentive! We'd come back!

A very old school cafe feel. The location is on a corner of the parking lot. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The food was great, especially The Spinach Artichoke Dip.

Had to meals while in town and both were excellent. The chicken was tender throughout and very tasty. The patio is a great place when the weather is warm to sit back relax and eat a great meal.

If you want honest-to-goodness great food, no pretentious BS, go here. Home cooking, hot and fresh with very friendly service. Full bar, great drinks.

I will now visit Josephine Street on every visit to San Antonio. Great food and service. It is obvious the chef and kitchen staff really care about what they are serving. I had an excellent bacon rapped sirloin steak. As far as pricing goes, it was a great value. The restaurant can be a challenge to find the first time so be patient, it is worth the effort.

Went here for dinner with some friends. It was packed and there was a wait, which is usually a good sign. I ordered a steak and mashed potatoes. It was one of the BEST steaks I've ever had. Cooked perfectly and was nice and juicy. The potatoes were homemade because they still had some lumps in them. They were delicious as well. The meal was decently priced, too. I did get a slice of pecan pie to go. It was really good, but a little over priced at almost $10 for one slice. Would definitely return and would probably get another steak.

Ate there tonight with co-workers. Had a fantastic meal! Everything the 6 of us ordered was delicious!! The restaurant itself from the outside does look a little sketchy, especially to out of towners, but so glad I listened to reviews that said to go! Great food very reasonably priced and very sweet wait staff!

It is the best chicken fried steak in San Antonio. Don't miss the green beans, they are the best ever. Very fast and friendly service. A must visit.

chicken fried steak not what it used to be... Declining quality, coupled with rising prices, can be frustrating, especially when you have a longstanding history with a dish or restaurant. Chicken fried steak is not living up to past standards. Hopefully, the managment will take note and work to bring back the quality that made them a favorite.

Fool me one shame on me, fool me twice shame on you, as the old saying goes. We always try new places when we come here. This was a suggestion I wish we had not taken. Expensive parking for below average tasteless food. I’ve not seen deep fried Pablo crumb food. Love Panko crumbs on food, but this was not the case. Over priced and tasteless. Won’t be back and will not recommend!

This is not a good place to eat. Their so called fried potatoes were not cooked all the way through. Bad service and very expensive. My husband and i got a parking ticket in the mail. For 37.00 The are making money left and right by charging to park in front of there restaurant. They the worst.

When places claim to be old timey roadhouses and rave about their “famous” chicken fried steak, then they need to live up to their hype. That wasn’t our experience. We didn’t mind waiting for a table. Lunchtime was crowded. We got one right at the window. My wife ordered the chicken fried steak, which was tough and hard to chew. The breading was thick and heavy. Ugh. We have had many better ones, elsewhere. The onion rings are huge, and they were fine. My trout was overcooked. A camera crew was taking photos of a table filled with dishes that looked really delicious. Too bad we didn’t order one of them. So, I can only review our meals, which never rose above average, hence, three stars. The servers were the saving grace. Despite the crush around them they were friendly and in good spirits. We made a special trip to come here because we had a coupon. Probably won’t do that again. That being said, they were very busy, so it seems many others are of a different opinion.

Today was our first visit, and we will definitely be back. The food was great, reasonably priced. Liz was our server and she was awesome!

If you are a local, you already know this. If you are visiting San Antonio, it is worth the trip over to Josephine Street, which is a hop and a skip from downtown. This restaurant has been around for a very long time. It's quaint, small has very good steaks at very reasonable prices and I have always loved that they serve their beer with small glasses.

We were looking for a local place away from the tourist destinations and this one popped up on a search of best steakhouses in San Antonio. Can’t say best because there are lots to try, but you surely can’t go wrong with this place. When the locals eat there twice a day, there is a reason. You get an onion ring with each meal...and it’s a meal to itself. The best onion ring I can remember...the fries are like none other-a whole sliced potato sliced thin like you would pan fry...amazing flavor. Blackened shrimp was great...not too much pepper to overwhelm the shrimp, and the steak was right on point. I don’t think they serve breakfast, or I would eat there 3 times a day. 40 years in the same place for a reason. Absolutely amazing. I’m going back!!

This is my second time here, giving it another chance. Over priced food. T-bone steak ⭐️ ⭐️ lemon flavored (had better steaks at Cracker Barrel and Longhorn steakhouse) so disappointed Skinless loaded potatoes ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Liver and onion ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (soft) Onion rings ⭐️ Queso and sausage ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Onion rings (disappointed

I cannot express how much my boyfriend & I loved Josephine's Steak & Whiskey restaurant. Love how the inside looks like an old house made into a restaurant along with the old school bar. Very friendly & feels like home. The owner even came, sat down with us, & had a very pleasant fun conversation. The steak was incredible & of course, we paired it along with a fine whiskey. If you're looking for a laid back home country vibe, I highly recommend this gem. Walking distance to the Pearl as well!

Steak places these days are more about paying $45 and then paying for your side dishes separately. The family wanted a low key steak place sans the high prices and fancy decor so the hotel recommended this. There's free parking across from the restaurant under the bridge which was adequate. We showed up about 7:00pm on Thursday night with no wait. We were seated next to the tree growing thru the middle of the place. This place is more about food and less about the decor or the atmosphere. We started with the Onion rings and Spinach Artichoke Dip. The Onion Rings were good but nothing special. The Artichoke Dip was stellar though. For steaks, we went with Ribeyes which were cooked perfectly for $20. Service was good overall. We'd return in a heartbeat.

My husband wanted a great chicken fried steak while we were in Texas. We searched and found this place and man we were not disappointed!! he had the chicken fried steak. I had a ribeye, and they were both amazing and if you do not get their peach cobbler ala mode you are missing out in life.definitely come here for a visit!

We tried this restaurant one evening on a trip to San Antonio primarily because the reviews were good and the prices were moderate.Upon entering it was clear this was a very old building...perhaps in need of demolition! We normally ask for a booth but took a table instead because the booths slanted with the crooked floors at least 20 degrees. A ketchup bottle on its side would have rolled! There is a large tree growing right up thru the floor and disappointing into the ceiling which we kind of cool? Since it was near Xmas it was lit up...also kind of cool. We ordered rib eyes $18...which came w/ just one side..I ordered fries and my friend ordered onion rings at a $2 up-charge. The waitress was not very friendly and actually seemed rather bored with her job. The food came very fast..too fast! The small, thin rib eye was overcooked, swimming in grease along with my fries which were doing the backstroke in it! The plates were too small for the food. When I complained about my steak being overcooked the waitress said it was probably the lighting that made it seem that way! Really! When I disagreed she shrugged her shoulders and walked away. Scratch this place off your list of places to eat in San Antonio!

We started with an order of onion rings. They were delicious but VERY salty. I had the fried gulf shrimp which was probably the best fried shrimp I’ve ever eaten. Had a side of green beans which also were good - not mushy like some places. My husband had the beef tenderloin steak salad and he said it was excellent. Our friends shared a beef tenderloin sandwich. The steak on both of those was very tender and flavorful. The service was also very good. Would definitely go back.

Nothing spectacular but decent food. Lots of fried food. The onion rings were awesome and the steak was cooked well and yummy. I personally couldn't give the place a higher rating based on its over all ambience. It's rather dumpy, falling apart with the remnants of a huge tree inside. The worst thing, in my opinion, is that it was so loud I couldn't even hear everyone in my dinner party... Staff was friendly and prices were reasonable.

I have had their tenderloin salad, and their bacon wrapped filet and they will melt in you mouth! Their onion rings are to die for. Vegetables are large portions and just like Mom makes! The building is a historical old meat market with a large tree trunk lit up in the middle of it! Tables are cozy and the bar is great! Cannot go wrong eating here! A great San Antonio experience!

This place is good. That is all. Except i have to type more. Steak great. Sangria great. Sausage queso great. Leaning booth in 100+ yr old old awesome. Tree going thru ceiling, lovely. Indoor & outdoor seating. Servers sweet. Spurs bus cool idea. Only complaints are no dogs allowed outside seating.

Awesome food Awesome service We were looking for somewhere to eat at 15:00 hours and since lots of places were closed, we found this one, literally, around a corner and it’s the best surprise!!!! Super delicious!!! Onion rings are WONDERFUL!!!

Everytime we’re visiting the San Antonio area we eat here, we are never disappointed. This trip we ate here twice, and everything was outstanding. We had queso steak, chicken fried steak, grilled pork chops, cheeseburger and grilled catfish. I can’t wait to come back soon so we can eat here again!

We searched for a locals-type restaurant to avoid the River Walk chains and Josephine's was great. Our server, Esmerelda, was really busy yet she managed to give us great service! Our steaks were perfect.

Interesting building with a huge tree growing through the dinning room. The structure is like a fun house with uneven floors and tilted tables. Food wise they are solid. The steaks are cooked right and seasoned well. A good local eatery to try in San Antonio.

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner. It is a very crowded place but that fits the experience quite well. The steak and shrimp was great! the cob cob the cob was excellent.

Adjacent to Pearl Brewery district. Great, no frills good. Though they were busy, service was expedient. Tables were cleared quickly, and the wait staff and bar were attentive. Steaks were cooked to perfection and the prices were reasonable. Only negative would be sitting next to the door to the patio is not fun as the door bangs every time it is opened. Will definitely return.

If you are not from the area and want to see what TX looked liked back in the day this would be a good place to see! There’s actually covered parking (under the overpass!) which is nice due to our continued heat! And it’s within walking distance from the delightful Pearl. This was our first visit to the restaurant and we enjoyed it all but I should have sat in a different area as my chair would start to slide on the neat old wooden floor. Wait staff is friendly!! Fast service and they were busy right at lunchtime. We started with the tomaltia & avocado sauce with chips for an appetizer. Plain store bought chips, we were a little disappointed. Sauce had a nice flavor, something different and goes well over the salad and the grilled chicken that I had. Very nice side salad, good dressings, and my thin grilled chicken breast was moist. My husband really liked his thick steak. I didn’t care for the pinto beans because they had chili powder in them, that’s not true TX! But my husband thought they were good. The twice baked mashed potatoes had a nice flavor. The single onion ring that is on every entree was good but it is crispy so careful there if you have bad teeth!

The atmosphere was awesome! I had such high expectations based on a friend's recommendation. The food was very disappointing. I had the pepper-crusted, bacon wrapped filet. I will say that the steak was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately the bacon was soggy, the pepper overwhelmed at the stake. And even after scraping off all of the pepper steak had an unusual flavor to it. The lime "butter" they serve with their steaks is actually margarine. I only found this out after asking for butter for my mashed potatoes and they gave me a little packets of "buttery flavored spread."

Great place that we stumbled upon. It's very cozy and unique, and entrees we're fantastic! We will definitely plan to come back on our next trip to SA.

Without doubt, our favourite restaurant during our visit to San Antonio. We only discovered it towards the end of our stay, so went there the last two nights. Can honestly say it's THE best steak I've tasted in a long time. Soooo good. And the place is funky too. Always busy and not surprised. Staff are the icing on the cake - efficient and pleasant. Will DEFINITELY be there the next time we're in town.

Don’t let the exterior fool you. The interior of the restaurant is gorgeous and They gave me one of the best steaks I have ever eaten!

Had T-bone steak it was great great salad and mushroom and corn on cob this was great food great service staff was outstanding

I am glad local friends took me here for dinner. It is located in the Pearl Brewery District and very popular among locals. The restaurant is not that big and locate just right under the two highways merge. Although the place was very busy, but the turn over is quite often. I am glad I got to go there but it is too crowded and too loud with not much of elbow room between table. I have to say though, that busy restaurant with that many people, they turned out the food quite quickly and the wait staff are very efficient and good tentative to the table. If good food, crowded place and do not mind waiting (no space to wait) is your excitement, try it. If I would try again, I would try to find the down time to go.

We took an Uber to this restaurant from the Riverwalk. It was really good! We both had filets that were cooked to perfection! The server was attentive and friendly. Worth the price of Uber trips from our Riverwalk hotel.

Have eaten here frequently over the past ten years and like it better each time we go. Last visit was just two of us for late lunch on July 4th. I had grilled pork chops and wife had liver & onions. Sides of mashed potatoes, green beans, broccoli. All tasty and well-prepared. Total bill just under $20 before tip. Sooo good. And good service and casual atmosphere. Have been here with a few family, and with a group of nearly 20. Always good. Never tried their steaks, as I prefer to cook my own usually, but plan to have a T-bone someday soon.

Saw this place had good reviews and decided to try it. Walking in the place, it was not quite what I expected. The floor was bowed up in the middle and the tables were arranged in a wierd way because of it. It's an old building and after realizing the floor was probably bowed because of the root system of a giant tree that is growing through the floor and up through the roof. We ordered our steak which was good (splurged for some extra flavored butter). My husband decided to try the onion rings and these things are like nothing you have seen before! Huge like half an onion and tasty. They were done well. And their fried shrimp were very good... they were more like chicken fried shrimp with a crunchy crust. I loved those! If we go back I'll probably just get the shrimp. Haha

Had an overall nice experience here. The restaurant is next to a busy street (as well as a 281 off-ramp). The dining room is relatively small, so between the traffic and the size of the place, there was constant "bustling" during our visit. I started with a bourbon and a lite beer, and both were fine. I also tried the creamy spinach salad, which was pretty good. Also tried the blackened trout w. cole slaw, which was also good. Also tried the pepper-wrapped filet, and that was just okay to me. Finished with the peach cobbler and ice cream, which we liked. Overall, had a nice time here. We weren't "wowed," but the casual charm of the place and decent food would bring us back from time to time.

Excellent Food! We visit my family in San Antonio about twice a year, Josephine Street is always one of our favorite restaurants. The food is always consistent and good. We had chicken fried steak, chopped steak with quest, grilled chicken and a large sirloin steak(my husband is picky and it was cooked to perfection). Our waitress was so nice too. Looking forward to returning on our next visit!

Josephine Street Steak and Whiskey is a bomb Texas Steakhouse! The ambiance is road house chic with nice service. I had one of the best Rib Eye steaks of my lifetime here. I ordered it medium rare, the sear was perfect and the core was tender. The onion rings are good too. I will definitely return here with friends next time I'm in San Antonio.

Small, old restaurant in the Pearl district. The place isn’t fancy but the food was great. Our group had filet, T-bone and trout with onion rings, green beans and mashed potatoes and everything was excellent. When we were there around 4:30 it wasn’t crowded but apparently they get a line out the door.

We had lunch here after giving up on an extremely long wait at Down on Grayson and we were so glad we did. They have a great menu with plenty of choices to please everyone and the prices are great for the portion size. Super friendly waitstaff that provide great service, as well. Looking forward to going back.

Googled "Best CFS in San Antonio", Josephine St. came up very high with good reviews overall and it sounded like "my kind of place" Drove up from the South side for lunch, seated right in the front window, not four feet from the tree! Ordered within two minutes and the meal was there within five. Overall very good, but the CFS was a little on the small, thin side, but very tasty. The cream gravy is very rich, excellent...especially with MY Marie Sharp's!!

This was a recommendation from a local and it was fabulous! I had the pork chops and the gravy was so good I took some home. Very reasonable prices as well especially considering you are near the pricy Pearl area!

Small venue with tree in middle of restaurant. Our food was excellent. Would highly recommend the chicken fried steak and fillet steaks. Everyone's steaks were less cooked than expected so plan accordingly. Also had the whiskey pecan pie which was very rich but good. Margaritas were excellent

Love the location, the site with the tree, the staff and bartender and last but not least, the food! Great quality, best mashed potatoes in town and the meat is to die for!

San Antonio tradition - great place for steak, seafood, chicken fried steak, hamburgers, and salads. Fun location with a tree growing in the middle of the building!

This was my favorite meal on my San Antonio trip. The Texas mule was delicious. I ordered a rib eye (it was cooked perfectly) and broccoli but I wish I’d gotten the onion rings. Great service.

Great food at a reasonable price. About 1 mile from Alamo. Hotel is a bit quirky with uneven floors. Extensive menus of home style cooking and local favorites. I had the sirloin steak and it was great. Lots of choices of sides. I choose to eat outside which is at picnic tables and picnic benches.

This place is a hidden gem. Everything we had was delicious! We got the onion ring appetizer. They were HUGE and so crispy and delicious! We also got the queso and chips. No joke the chips were by far the most delicious chips we’d ever eaten. They were slightly puffed and that made them super crispy. They were seasoned perfectly. The queso was good, too, but the chips were the star. We were celebrating our son’s graduation from Air Force basic training, so there were six of us who all ordered different things. Son was craving a steak after basic, and he got the ribeye. He said it was so good it made him want to cry (could have been the fact that he had been eating service food for seven weeks!). I got the filet - wonderful and flavorful. Broccoli was ok. Husband’s green beans were better. Hubby got the chicken fried steak - humongous and tasty. One got burger, one got grilled chicken salad, and one got lunch special. All were pleased and stuffed! Can’t recommend highly enough. Spent about $130 for six.

It had been a few decades since I had last visited but decided it was centrally located in distance from my friends and me. We met up there and one friend and I had chicken fried steak and my other friend had chicken fried chicken. We also ordered an appetizer. The food was OK; it wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t great. I did enjoy sitting right next to the big tree that is in the middle of the restaurant. We were disappointed when we asked for dessert and they were out of the two things we wanted on a Friday early evening. I do not think I will be back again.

My family and I are so happy we visited Josephine Street tonight. The restaurant was packed, but we didn't have more than a 10 minute wait for a table. I had the blackened salmon and it was outstanding. Make sure to try the green bean side...it has tomatoes and bacon and is very tasty. Best of all, we enjoyed an outstanding meal for a very reasonable price, especially since this place is so close to the Pearl.

Historic yes, exceptional….not really. Definitely a historic and neat atmosphere. Appetizers were good. The chicken fried steak was HUGE but lackluster. Definitely better out there.

I love places like this. Unique and local that makes for a memorable experience. The "home" food is good to very good and reasonably priced, but its the setting that will make the impression and keep you coming back. Highly recommend.

So excited that we chose to eat here for our last meal of our vacation!! Love our waitress and her suggestions were spot on. I had the filet with shrimp, my husband had the ribeye, and my boys and the chicken fried steak, and spaghetti and meatballs. None of us were disappointed!! We ended it with jack Daniela pecan pie😍

I ordered a chicken fried steak that came cold and the side of broccoli was way over cooked. Any good steak restaurant can make a decent chicken fried steak... not this place. The frozen margarita is good.

First, this was not our waitress’ (Summer) fault. The kitchen screwed it up and Summer did her best to make things right. Four of us ordered dinner, three of us received a meal. Very long wait for the first three meals. Summer twice assured me my meal was up next. Our server then had to reveal that the kitchen never made mine. Before I could just cancel my meal she left, so I figured it couldn’t be much longer. Everyone else completely finished their meal and I was eating there scraps when I flagged down Summer and cancelled my meal. Summer said my meal was now ready. I asked to cancel because I didn’t want my family to now sit and wait for me to finish my meal. Summer boxed my meal and deducted it from the check. The kitchen owes the waitress an apology.

We always go to Josephine street when our family visits. One of their favorite places. It is in a old historic building just outside of downtown. Has a tree that goes up through the roof. Always a wait but worth it. They have a sausage and onion with queso platter for a appetizer. So good! We had people coming to our table asking what it was. Chicken fried steak- chopped steak w/queso and grilled chicken are some of our favorites. All the sides are excellent. Staff is great.

We came today for lunch on my way tho the airport, and every was wonderful. Our server Liz, was training Beth today, and both were amazing. We had the chicken fried steak, queso steak, grilled chicken, and hamburger special of the day. I look forward to coming back next time I’m in the area.

If you are looking for an authentic atmosphere & great food, put this place on your list! We enjoyed steaks, salmon & shrimp. Delicious!

Remember that place growing up where the beer was cold and the chicken fried steak was always awesome? Healthy options are avail at too. It’s here and better than ever. Don’t miss the Grilled chicken breast with optional sauces or the wilted salad. Can’t go wrong with anything here. Outdoor seating where you might even forget you are in the city.

Generous portions at reasonable prices! It’s easy to see why they’ve been around for a while! It’s not a large place & it’s kind of noisy inside, but the food is very good! Burgers are ginormous!!

Josephine's is located near the Pearl and has plenty of parking. It has a feeling of a place you would expect in a small town. The restaurant has expanded seating outside under oak trees. What brings me back is the daily lunch specials with two sides that offer chicken dishes, chicken fried steak, with fried shrimp served on Fridays. The steaks here are great and reasonable priced. The kitchen understands beef and how to cook it perfectly. It can be a bit noisy at times. The staff is as friendly as they are proficient and it is a great place to meet with friends.

I would have never found this place without trip advisor. The atmosphere was relaxed and the service was friendly. The food was also great. The home fries were amazing! We were vacationing but if he lived here would return often! The 2 of us had steak and sides for $34. Would be a fine place for kids too.

This restaurant is so interesting as when you arrive you will see how it settled! We ate here for our 25th wedding anniversary since we were staying at Hotel Emma. We both ordered the ribeye steak and I ordered the smaller ribeye medium-rare/medium and my steak was cooked medium well. It took awhile for the waitress to get back to us and they offered to cook a new steak but I declined. I wish I had taken them up on the offer to make me a new one because I'm sure it would have had better flavor! My husband's steak was very good. We did get a free brownie and ice cream for our anniversary.

I have been a customer at this landmark for decades. You cannot go wrong when you visit this establishment for a number of reasons, but number 1 is the chicken fried steak is the best.

This place is terrific! The quality/quantity of meat is superb. The chicken fried steak was huge and tender. The bacon wrapped filet was thick, juicy, tender and cooked to perfection. The T-bone and chicken pollo verde was perfect in all ways. Everything we ordered from the mash potatoes to green beans to onion rings were delicious. The Jack Daniels pecan pie and peach cobbler completed the delicious meal! If we lived in SA, we would surely be repeat customers.

Food is awesome. The spinach salad is out of this world. Very crowded and extremely unique. A tree, a rather large tree is growing in the middle of the restaurant. You will leave smelling like food...ventilation is poor. There is an outdoor eating spot.

Small place, very unique, old school. Food was excellent!!! We had the tomatillo salsa with avocado. Great chips. We ordered the chicken fried steak and the steak and shrimp. Steak was cooked perfect!! Chicken fried steak was awesome. We both got the twice baked mashed potatoes and they were very good. Every entree comes with a huge onion ring. Beers came with little glasses to drink out of. We very much enjoyed our experience at Josephine’s. Staff was very friendly and attentive.

I have been here hundreds of times and anytime I have friends here, I bring them here. Moved away from the area about 2 years ago but still come back anytime I am in the area. Had a favorite waitress who quit working here since I had lived. However, have the same waitress the last several times I come here recently and she is awesome!! She was here this morning and greeted as soon as I walked in the door. Asked for her section and then get set down and another lady; who has worked here since I started coming, ended up coming over. I said we always have so and so.. She VERY rudely says well I am taking you today. Then they have this new stupid parking thing. I was feeling out the informations and the card isn’t working. She goes “do you know your zip code?” In a VERY condescending and tie and rolling her eyes. Then she said you have two hours free. I said well, I stay here for a long time when I come— multiple hours!! She then says “You have a problem then.” Never had anyone so condescending or mean here. I have no idea when they started charging to park or having a waitress come being rude and stealing someone else’s table! Very disappointed in this trip.

We had a party of ten to celebrate my daughters BMT graduation. Got seated right away and had great service. My peppered filet and green beans were excellent. Good glass of house cab as well.

Wife and I stopped bye for the first time although have passed it many times. Got a 2fer in the mail and tried it. Wow were we surprised. The food was fabulous and the prices very reasonable. There is a great selection of wines and spirits. The menu is grouped by Scotches, Bourbons, Gins, etc. The beers are grouped as well with a healthy selection too. We arrived at just before 5 PM on a Thursday which is a good time since workers have not gotten there yet. We thought of sitting inside, which is kind of small but it was very noisy. We opted to listen to the traffic and sat on the outdoor patio. Service was excellent and as I said the food was great.

Been going here many years so while visiting San Antonio had to stop by! Still great food, service and atmosphere a really fun place to grab a bite to eat. Close to downtown off of Broadway.

This is a unique place to eat. The menu is quite different with a twist to some of the standard dishes you see everywhere. I had the chopped con queso. It was really tasty. My sister had the chicken fried steak and it was very good.

Our highest possible compliment for a restaurant is that the food & service is outstanding and the place is a true ORIGINAL and not another boring as can be chain. Josephine Street has held this distinction for 40+ years. This is not fine dining with fancy tablecloths and $50.00 6oz steaks. This is a hometown classic, basic classic STEAKHOUSE that delivers fantastic steaks at reasonable prices day in and day out in the coolest athmosphere you will find in San Antonio. Overpriced rippoff prices and snobby stuff never ever happens here. This is a can’t miss damn good steakhouse.

My first visit here was very good. However, on this visit both of our meals were lacking. My wife ordered a chicken breast which came out with just the chicken breast and an onion ring. I ordered the steak and shrimp that only had three little shrimp. This they tasted pretty good and the shrimp tasted good. However, the side salad needed a lot of work as it had just romaine and iceberg lettuce. Their all of oil and vinegar we're also very low quality. The mashed potatoes were good though.

Very quaint place and the waitstaff is very nice. The Sausage Nachos were fabulous... Enjoy with or without a cold beer. After the terrific appetizer and drinks we were expecting an exceptional meal however the meal was ample and nicely seasoned but ventured on the edge of average. The waitstaff is very good here.

Local, local, awesomely local! Food and drinks are outstanding. Bustling atmosphere, friendly service!

This is one of those places that sticks in your mind as a restaurant to return to and we did! We ate here two years ago when we visited, on the recommendation of a friend, and we returned with that friend and we were again delighted with the experience. My husband and I had the 7 oz steak and it was tender and delicious! I had a small bottle of bubbly wine and it was perfect! Recommend you go early, around 5pm before the crowds come but even busy, it is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Met my wife here for lunch. I had the chicken fried chicken breast with mashed potatoes and my wife had the rainbow trout on the grill, wow! My chicken was flavorful and moist. My wife said her fish was perfect. Now I don't know if the food tasted better because of the company of my lovely wife, but it was sure scrumptious. This is great home cooking. Place is always clean, restrooms too. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Food was prepared in a timely manner, but not rushed. We love the old building and I love the old tree right in the middle of the restaurant. Josephine St. Cafe is a winner!

Great steak dinner! Decided to try this place out and we are so glad we did! It has a funky, fun, local vibe to it. The restaurant has an old tree stump growing through it and so the floors are totally uneven which makes the seating either wobbly or on a slant- but to us that was all part of the charm. Not fancy but great food and service! My husband had the 16 oz Texas t-bone and I had the peppered bacon wrapped filet- both were soo good! Their mashed potatoes and gravy were some of the best I've had! We will definitely be back when in town again!

Outstanding service from our waitress Lizz we started with trio chips~that were the best I’ve ever had and the onion rings were awesome. Our main course was a filet and a NY Strip both were cooked to perfection by Frank and the flavor was great. The atmosphere is very casual and our kind of place. Not fancy at all. We finished our meal with2 deserts Cheese cake which was fresh and excellent and Peach Cobbler also excellent. The place is a little away from the downtown area but very well worth the 10minute drive. Ask for Liz you’ll enjoy the experience of the whole,e place

We stopped in at this San Antonio landmark on a Saturday evening before a concert downtown. Located conveniently off of the highway, the restaurant was pretty busy when we arrived at 6:30PM, but we were seated quickly after grabbing a beer at the bar. For those who have never visited, it's a pretty cool historic building with a tree in the middle of it. The floors aren't flat, which adds to the character of this historic location. The menu has quite a bit of variety, and we started with some chicken wings as an appetizer. We settled on chicken fried steak and liver and onions for our entrees, the latter of which isn't readily available at most places. Both dishes were prepared well, served hot, and tasted great. Our waitress was very attentive to our needs, keeping our drinks filled and table uncluttered. We were in and out in about an hour, where we enjoyed our meal at a leisurely pace. All in all it was a great dinner experience. For a meal in a unique old structure that's conveniently located to central San Antonio definitely drop in to Josephine Street.

Great Food and terrific service in a really unique restaurant. Been there many times when I lived in SA and always enjoyed a great meal.

Had the chicken lunch special on 9/28. It was delicious. Our waitress was attentive without hovering. I highly recommend the food and the turtle cheesecake.

Lunch on a Saturday. Seated immediately. Ordered the Spinach and Artichoke dip. It was very good. Got a second batch of chips to go with it. Watch out for the uneven floor. We had two steaks and some salmon. Steaks very good. The salmon was farm raised and had a bone in it. Broccoli was good and plenty of it.

First time trying this place. Excited to order a steak for a celebratory dinner. Disappointed when my bacon wrapped fillet arrived with the bacon lying next to the steak, a brown soggy strip! The steak seemed fine at first, but then half way I noticed a change in texture. There’s low light, so upon further inspection I noticed my steak was undercooked, just about rare (I ordered medium well). The waitress stopped by to check on us. I told her my steak was not cooked as requested. She offered to take the half back to have it cooked more, but I had lost my appetite. I figured they’d comp part of the meal, but nope - full price for an ok meal. Not planning on going back again.

Oh my gosh! Our absolute favorite place to eat in San Antonio. We live 6 hours away and the servers remember us every time we go back. The food is phenomenal and very reasonable. Great food quality and casual atmosphere . There's even a tree growing through the roof of this treasure! You gotta try this!

My daughters and I were lucky to score an outside table here on a Friday night with no wait. This restaurant was crazy busy but I now know why...because the food is so good! I ordered the beef tenderloin anticuchos which is typically an appetizer but for $2 more you could add a side and make it a complete meal. The meat was cooked perfectly and the dipping sauce was delicious. It was more than enough food. Had a good cold beer to go with my meal! One of my daughters is on a gluten free diet and they were able to accommodate her. We had very good service in spite of the busyness.

Friends took me here on one of the nights the restaurant offered coupons. It was a fantastic experience. It seemed that everyone but us was a local and a regular. I had the strip steak; my wife, the filet. Both were expertly cooked. The onion rings were wonderful. If you are not familiar with this restaurant, be prepared, it is a noisy, crowded interior but everyone is so friendly. The outside patio area looks like it would be ideal when the weather is warmer. Prices are god.

For the amount of great reviews I was a bit disappointed. The shrimp are great as a previous review posted. The prices are good too. The floors are worse than the reviews make it sound. It’s also very loud and very crowded. If they took out five table from the middle it would be much better. Also my onion ring and my wife’s mashed potatoes were on the cold side. Go for the price and the shrimp.

Been around for EVER. Simple menu (not a bad thing) that focuses on steaks. Good beer, wine and alcohol selection. BTW - the queso and chips are the same from Grist Mill in Gruene.

My father took me to Josephine Street the first time when I was 24. I’m 60 now and the steaks are still AMAZING and the atmosphere is the same as I remember especially the tree. This is a must go place when visiting San Antonio.

The place itself is rather eclectic as far as decor goes. And our booth we were seated at was noticeable slanted; my kids said they felt like it was from a fun house. But we come for the food, so bring on the steaks. Unfortunately, mine had to be sent back for being undercooked. Granted, it was incredibly thick, but I ordered it medium rare and it came out beyond bloody on the inside and near medium well on the outside. It was brought back cooked properly, but the flavor just wasn't there for me. We all thought everything was just OK. Service was fine, but we definitely expected more based on the reviews.

The place is pretty cool, old building. The menu is mostly steak and burgers, We all agreed that the TOMATILLO-AVOCADO DIP was great as were the onion rings, the entrees were"OK' but not special, Desserts were good.

Ate here with friends on a Saturday evening. The fried shrimp and onion rings were very good, but got the house fries and they were more like sliced potatoes not fries. The food was better than the cocktails- they need to work on those. Would return for the shrimp!

This place has been here for decades. The menu is predictable, and the food quality consistently good. This has an old saloon vibe to it, but the ribeye or fish / shrimp platters are superior to then chain maidens. This is a great place for a relaxing business or friends catch-up lunch or dinner. The prices are as unpretentious as the atmosphere and provide value for what you get.

It is a very unique place considering the age of the building and the tree growing out of the middle of it. The whole place looks very old and has a lot of "character". With the character come the downsides. The downsides are that t hey cant remodel the place and bring it up to standards , since it would destroy the "character" at the same time. So the downsides are that the A/C was blowing in your face and there wasnt away to adjust it. The floor was so uneven that it was hard to find a chair that was working. The bathroom was pretty nasty and hasn't made it to the 21st century. Let's say "gas station level".. the service was good. The place was somehow noisy that it was hard to carry a conversation across a table without yelling each other. The menu looks like good country food. I had a new yorlkstrip ( asked the waiter what she would recommend and that was what she recommened ) and it was ok. I am attaching the filet my colleague had as a photo. I didn't think the wine and beer options were anything out of the ordinary..the pricing was reasonable.

The burgers are so solidly great! Juicy, big, and delicious! The onion rings and the sides of grilled onions and mushrooms completed the delight. Our server was a true character and took great care of us.

If your looking for a small, intimate place to go have yourself a good diner or lunch, highly recommend this place, the menu is all good and the friendly staff is pleasing.

Asked locals about a great place for steak and they all agreed to Josephine's. They were absolutely right. The food was delivered quickly, hot, and definitely delicious. We were there for lunch and ate outside on the picnic tables. It was no too noisy or crowded and it was nice to enjoy the sunshine. A few bees and birds were hanging about but just added to the ambiance. The steak is pricey. $20-26 per meal but the flavor and "done-ness" was spot on. Worth the price. Highly recommend

We come here at least twice while I’m visiting family in San Antonio, it’s always good. I’m a fan of the chicken fried steak since I can’t get that at home, but everything is good. We usually come for a late lunch to avoid the crowd.

Great little restaurant with great food, cooked to order and served in a timely manner. And there is a tree growing through the dining room!

Had a wonderful dinner this evening although it was a bit crowded since it was raining heavily outside. Ordered their large sirloin which was prepared perfectly. Sides we chose were a garden salad and their "loaded mash potatoes." Entire meal was excellent and the service provided by Celia was outstanding!!

Nice little out of the way place. Indoor and outdoor dining. Friendly staff good service. Prices are good and service was quick for being full. I had the bone in sirloin which was very good along with fries and salad . My wife had a salad with steak tips. Would recommend to anyone visiting or that lives in San Antonio.

Josephine Street Cafe is a San Antonio institution. It is located on the edge of the Pearl district but has been around for decades before the Pearl was ever developed. The floor slopes and creaks, there is a tree trunk in the middle of the dining room, it is small and crowded especially on weekends, but the food is great and the atmosphere is marvelous. They serve the basic food groups...steaks and whisky...but have an extensive menu of excellent diner fare. There is a full bar, and the waitstaff is friendly and efficient. Outdoor seating is available. There is a large parking lot under the freeway next door, but parking can be a problem on weekends due to overflow from the Pearl. Definitely worth a visit.

Very small inside and it gets really busy at lunch. Food is very good and the service is excellent. Definitely recommend it for lunch.

Disappointed, we use to go all the time, tried after 3 years. Onion rings were only good thing. Filet not as good, chopped steak had nothing on it, just a piece of meat, use to have gravy/sauce, hamburger would have more. Wait staff never checked for follow-up help and parking is city owned now and too much trouble to get validated or pay city 13.00. Will not ever go again or recommend

Ate here while visiting San Antonio and really liked it. Our food was good and service was very good as well. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It’s a small place and was crowded when we were there, but I’d eat here again without hesitation.

This is a new nice alternative the restaurant on the Riverwalk. Not far from downtown and the food was good. Had the ribeye which was flavorful and cooked nice, not as much flavor as steaks I have had other places but still good. Son had the Chicken fried steak which he loved and it was a sizable portion. We had queso with sausage and onions for an appetizer and this was the highlights of the meal. Everyone enjoyed this. If you are looking for an alternative to get away from the Riverwalk crowd, this is a good choice. Parking under the interstate right by the door is a plus for no charge. The place is small but we had a nice table outside.

Arrived at 5:45 on Sunday. Sat there and waitress told us they were "plating our order", Never received order and left a 6:30. Lost my business.

Nice selections and friendly service- we came in with a party of nine. We ordered everything from steaks to salads to pollo verde. Everybody left happy. The tomatillo avocado dip was great. The floors are uneven and it's a little like walking through a fun house but hey- that just adds to the charm.

If you are in SATX and looking for a great steak and a reasonable price, Josephine Street restaurant is a must. The steaks were amazing, the service was quick, and the price super reasonable. The atmosphere is casual but the quality is better than most of the more pretentious, expensive Steakhouses. I plan to become a regular here.

Came here with my friend I'm visiting and just from looking at the outside I was excited to eat here. The trees in the middle of the building and outside were cool and the ambience was relaxing and laid back with a nice outdoor feeling. The service was great if you get Christi she is awesome. And the food.. really really good! Unbelievable prices and a great quality for anything you order! I told my friend I want to come back here the next time i visit so if you live here or are visiting put this place on your to-do list!

It is a very charming place, the tree in the restaurant and the tilted floors gave the place great character. Although crowded on a Wednesday night, all of the staff was delightful and our waitress was great about coming by to check how we were doing. We ordered a "small" chips and queso for an app, I say "small" because it was a huge basket of tortilla chips and a good size serving of queso! However, the queso itself wasn't that impressive. For an entree I decided to try their hot wings with their advertised homemade buffalo sauce. I was disappointed when I got them, I was not expecting fried wings but gave them a-go. The homemade sauce was on the side, but it was just Franks sauce. I definitely regretted my choice as I saw the other dishes, luckily our fantastic waitress had asked if I wanted a side salad when we ordered (they have huge side salads) so I didn't go away hungry. I'd return due to the customer service and maybe try my luck with another meal choice.

We got here about 1:30 today for lunch. I walked inside to see how long the wait for seven would be. I was rudely told that she couldn’t seat us without the entire party present, nor could she tell me how long! Being in the restaurant business myself I understand the party must be present, but unable to give me a time frame or even offer to put us on a list is a new one for me. I then proceeded to take my grandson to the restroom, during that short time my nephew arrived. So my sister in law told another waitress that our entire party was there, that person was rude with her! If this were my business both of these ladies would be looking for a new job!!! If I weren’t eating here on the way to the airport I would’ve left and went elsewhere. Our server Alicia was very nice, she’s waited on us before. She’s very pleasant. Our food was very good as always. We eat here at least once on every visit to San Antonio, sometimes twice…todays rude treatment was a big letdown!

Down-home food thats really good. A local institution. Good beer, food and a Texas vibe about it. Fun

I had one of the best meals of my trip to San Antonio here. Great steaks awesome onion rings and at a great price. Liz was very helpful. She listened to what we liked and steered us to what we really wanted. By far the best meals of my trip. Unique atmosphere. Not the ambiance of the upscale river walk places but down home charm with great service.

Josephine Street is located a stones throw away from The Pearl complex. It is just off the freeway and offers parking under the freeway structure itself. Noise wasn't a factor as the freeway is elevated. The restaurant has a casual vibe with dinning inside and out. Our server was very friendly and offered suggestions and small changes that were available to our choices. I ordered a plate of half fried and half grilled gulf shrimp because I couldn't decided. My spouse carved into a perfectly cooked New York steak. Both mains were excellent but the sides needed work. The green beans were very salty and had to be returned. The mashed potatoes were okay. We should have ordered the french fries as they looked delicious on other plates. The pecan pie was killer. The crust on the pie tasted like cookie dough. The pecans were perfectly proportioned with the sweet filling. Yumm. Over all, Josephine's is a keeper and worthy of return visits.

Josephine Street used to be one of our hangouts for dinner and happy hours, especially in the fall when the weather was cool. We've been going to Jo-Street for years because of the delicious crispy and juicy Jo Wings and the fantastic salsa and chips, as well as the other delicious food. Today we ordered our usual wings and chips and what we got was some awful bone-dry Buffalo Wild Wings knock-off and a salsa that would embarrass even Pace Picante. Obviously, the new owners thought the menu needed to be tweaked and "improved." Instead, they have succeeded only in ruining two of their signature items. The wings are now truly awful. Anything we could get at Wing Stop would be a dramatic improvement and the salsa is simply a watery mix of tomato chunks and onions. There are a dozen bottled salsas at HEB that are a thousand percent better. Even the chicken fried chicken had a different, and inferior, batter. Only the green beans remained the same and were excellent (the one food item we had that was not ruined). Our family has not been this disappointed in a favorite restaurant in a long, long time. And we hate to say it but it will be a long, long time before we go back. We can get the same crappy wings and salsa at other cheaper places.

We try to come here every time we’re in the San Antonio area. So far this trip we’ve been here for lunch and dinner, and both were excellent. It has a unique older charm to the building inside and out. And the food is always fantastic. I highly recommend giving them a try!

We had dinner at Josephine St. and it was delicious! The servers were friendly and attentive. The prices were very reasonable. It’s a hidden gem!

My favs are the chicken fried and the pork chops! Oh and don't forget to order the chips and queso with sausage as an appetizer!

Early Lunch on a week day. I arrived right at 11 am when they open. As I walked up to the door, they were unlocking it. There were two large blackboards with food choices, also a regular menu. There was also a small blackboard with the days specials. I ordered pork chops, gravy, and broccoli. The unsweet tea was good. The pork chops very good. The broccoli was prepared perfectly. I did not try any of the deserts. I was offered bread and accepted the offer. It was just store bought white sandwich bread. There was butter. The check was $15. and change. I do not usually comment about the facilities but this place is unusual. It is old, the floor is quite uneven old hardwood. The tables and chairs are sturdy, functional, and well used. It is an interesting place. There was supposed to be a tree growing in the middle of the place, or at least a stump remaining. I did not see it. The location is right next to an overhead freeway, with parking underneath.
Too crowded, too noisy, average food
I ordered the tenderloin sandwich. The meat was good, but the bun was so wet it immediately fell apart and I could not pick it up. There are way too many tables in the place and it is impossible to carry on a conversation. Probably will not return.
