A Favorite Spot

By P R |

As locals, Joule is a favorite spot. While there is no view, it's especially nice to sit on the small outside deck w/ fire pit (weather permitting). While all the food here is consistently good, we especially like the slightly spicy rice cakes, short ribs w/ kimchi and grilled octopus, which is some of the best in Seattle. Service is friendly. Great dinner spot!

Brunch

By luxgrly |

Met friends at Joule for brunch. I ordered the chicken and waffles, which quite honestly, I wasn’t impressed with. It was a sesame waffle with a tiny drizzle of syrup, no butter. The chicken, while flavorful was wet at the bottom, likely from a mixture of syrup and condensation. One of my friends ordered the steak and eggs with chimichurri sauce and she loved it. My other friend ordered the grits with a side of bacon, eggs and toast. His grits were a bit watery, but everything else was okay. Very modern decor. Bathroom is shared with the restaurant next door. Staff friendly with just the right amount of attention.

Robotically Frightening

By Philip G |

looking forward to dining at Joule, which gets national recognition. Korean culinary traditions and preparation are driving kitchens from coast to coast, and Joule reputedly is at the pinnacle of this style of cooking. We chose to eat at the kitchen counter, and I immediately noticed no one in the kitchen was smiling or seemed happy. There appeared to be an umbrella of sadness over the entire restaurant. Suddenly, a GPS voice was speaking behind me. Huh? did I hit the wrong button on my phone? I spun around and noticed a young woman speaking, facing our direction. Realizing she was a server and possibly human, I paid attention to the words, although there was no eye contact. She spoke in a monotone, saying all the correct things, without displaying an iota of human frailty. Seattle dot comers had created the perfect robot. I was astonished! She continued the recitation, and all I could do was just nod. It was an alternate universe. Our spicy rice cake and potato lumpia appetizers were interesting, but not really delicious. The steaks were excellent, with the short rib steak taking first place. I initially ordered the Wagyu steak which was good, but I was still hungry, so I asked for the bavette steak and bread for dessert. Finally, I was full. Throughout our meal, the robotic server was utterly professional, but fittingly, she never smiled, engaged, or showed any emotion. She was the perfect .com creation. Our finally bill, with a couple of cocktails and a couple of glasses of wine, was $213 with a 20% tip included. That was a akin to what we paid in Paris at Michelin starred restaurants. Nuff said! If you enjoy an experience void of any emotion, with all fun vacuumed out of the room, you will enjoy Joule. That’s scary!

Food and Service is excellent

By Smarto22 |

This was my second time here. My first experience was fantastic, during the summer we sat outside. I was not disappointed upon my return. We sat at the bar and again had exceptional service and the food is wonderful. Unique dishes and flavors! Can't wait to go back.

A gem of a find in Seattle

By JoeBlow88 |

Joule is located in a somewhat quiet area of Seattle, just outside the University district. You walk in and you're not sure which way to go-to the right is a restaurant that has a bit of a New England feel, and to the left is Joule which has a more stylish vibe going on. Go left. Joule has takes Asian foods, comfort foods, even, and gives the a bright and sexy twist. The Kaya toast is toast, but with a toasted black sesame butter. Seems simple, but the black sesame butter is what draws you in for more of what Joule offers. The Smoked Tofu is also alluring, the honshimeji confit tasty with the vinaigrette. If you're coming from any major Asian enclave in the US, you've had rice noodle before, but there's something about their spicy rice noodle, with the chorizo and mustard greens, that had us wanting a bigger serving. The Bavette and the Petit were excellent beefs, medium rare and so tender. Did we have to chew before swallowing?-it was that good. We also had the Mackerel with the green curry cilantro chimichurri-I'm not a mackerel fan and this dish didn't convert me, but my significant other likes this fish so I'm OK with it. Desserts were just as great. Vietnamese coffee ice cream, with ladyfingers and a milk granita was simple yet elegant. We thought the Joule Box-pearl tapioca, ruby grapefruit brulee, coconut-would be so good, but the Vietnamese ice cream was better. . . maybe our escalating expectations were more than it could be. We also had the white trufle cheesecake-maybe we aren't frou frou enough to enjoy the truffle oil, the cheesecake was good, the truffle oil drizzle may have been a little to heavy-handed for us. Joule is definitely a go-backer for us. A hair pricey, but it's a splurge restaurant that won't break the bank!

good food but...

By Igrush |

We have been several times in this restaurant and food is always interesting and tastful but it is imossible to reach them over the phone to make or change the reservation or to find out if they have last minute canselation. So I understand that Joule is popular place but does it mean that its OK not to pick up the phone or not to return messages for weeks? I do not think so as well as many of our friends who tried to connect with them over the phone. When you wait too long you loose your appetite.

Bold flavors abound

By Michael U |

Created by the folks behind Revel Joule Restaurant finds Chefs Rachel Yang and Seif Chirchi exploring similar ideas in the format of a Korean-fusion steakhouse featuring Northwest ingredients and seriously bold flavors. Not to be confused with KBBQ, but not really a “Steakhouse” in the traditional sense of big cuts of Beef alongside mundane Veggies or Starch, Joule divides its offerings into a concise list not unlike Momofuku where starters may include Scallion Pancakes that eat like Roti with a sidecar of Smoked Salmon Roe, Chili Oil and Creme Fraiche. Offering a full bar under the vintage “Jewelry” sign with only the first five letters glowing, and matching Bone Marrow beneath Spicy Anchovy Butter to funky blue wallpaper, there’s nothing really Korean or Steakhouse about Shrimp and Chinese Sausage Bao but with a dip in Black Vinegar these Umami-bombs are among the best things to eat anywhere. Sold on Spicy Rice Cakes by a rail thin server, his assertion that he eats them “all the time” questionable though the bold spices and diverse textures juxtaposing bitter Greens would make avoiding them difficult when available daily, Dessert shows Yang’s classic training and Chirchi’s American upbringing first via the delicate Joule Box and then in Hummingbird Cake quite different from those down South.

Delicious and unique

By carley36 |

We had an excellent meal of small plates. Flavors were amazing and combinations of unique ingredients worked well. Our server was knowledgeable and personable. We appreciated that she did not push us to order more than we needed and we're glad we left room for the fabulous desserts.

Wonderful place

By JohnMaMercer |

Good decor, service and food is appealing. Parking on street and reservation via Open Table. Great for special occasion.

Adventurous Tastings!

By Sara-aRhodyGirl |

Visiting a friend, with my parents and boyfriend, in Seattle for one night. We got lucky and only had to wait 45 minutes for a table since we hadn't made a reservation. My parents aren't generally adventurous with their food and my mom was a bit nervous about the eclectic menu. However, she loved everything we ordered. Joule promotes family-style. This confused us as we're from the Northeast. Family style means endless huge portions in the Northeast. At Joule, it's synonymous with tapas. So we ordered lots of dishes and shared. We weren't disappointed with anything and we tried about 3/4 of the menu. So delicious!

Delicious creative brunch in open air setting

By baseball_dad |

We really enjoyed brunch here with some non-traditional menu choices. They serve a buffet with a few small side dishes and then you order a larger entree item off the menu. Everything was unique and creative and delicious. Would love to try dinner here too.

Outstanding, creative French Korean fusion

By Paul W |

The four of us greatly enjoyed our dining experience here, ordered many small plates to share and most were outstanding. Very creative and well-prepared dishes with excellent service. Will definitely return.

Very Nicely Done

By Robert S |

Joule has a real feel for it's cuisine. This is not standard Korean, but rather a wonderful play of ingredients that heightens the flavors, and surprises us with their subtle, simple elegance. We had a great meal at Joule. We tried a lot of items and wished we could have tried more. Do not miss this place.

Anniversary Dinner Gem

By C0nvictTang |

We spent a weekend in Seattle for an anniversary weekend, and Joule came highly-recommended as a spot for our anniversary dinner. We were not disappointed! The staff greeted us with "Happy Anniversary!" which was surprising but also nice, since it seems they do read the Open Table reservation notes. The space it gorgeous - it has a kind of industrial-meets-sunroom vibe. We were sitting outside, decently far from other parties, and with a heat lamp. There was a firepit in the center. We felt fairly virus-safe but still comfortable and warm. The menu is really the start, however. We went by our waitress's recommendations and tried the tofu, the pancake, the rice, the cod, and of course the short rib. Everything was phenomenal. We're still reminiscing about that tofu...! They surprised us with celebratory champagne which was another first for us, that the restaurant acknowledged our personal holiday. Our waitress was also a great resource for some of the local sights and bars, which we headed to after. Overall, highly recommend this spot if you're in the area, and we would definitely come back again. Thanks for an awesome night, Joule team!

Less Korean-fusion, more delicious

By SeattleDoc2010 |

I am always a bit nervous about “Asian fusion” style restaurants, but after a trip to the Evo store (Joule and The Whale Wins are below it), it just smelled so good, we had to try. The food is only minimally Korean-influenced depending upon what you order, but it was all very very good. It is apparently mostly a steak restaurant, and the steak was delicious. But we also had 2 non-steak entrees that were just as good (actually I liked the octopus more than the steak, which is saying a lot since I lived the steak). And not to demean what was fabulous food, but our dessert, the joule box was perhaps our favorite dish of the meal. In general, I get the impression whatever you eat here, you are going to love it. We would definitely go back.

Excellent food- bring it on

By Momma L |

Great restaurant to go with a large group because it enables you to share, share, share. Our table of 6 ate almost everything on the menu. the rice cakes had such a kick! The noodles were amazing. You must try the short ribs.

If Fremont were a tree, decorated with fabulous restaurants as ornaments, Joule would belong at the top of that tree!

By BallardBornJoanne |

We decided to visit Joule on a really wet day and sat in the bar. We live near enough to have walked and were soaking wet when we crawled up onto the bar stools. The fire outside made it feel cozy just to see. We sampled a variety of things and shared. Everything was amazing and beautiful! We had steak tartare, the escolar dish, a salad, the farro rice and a dessert. I'm a dessert fan and don't get them often because I think I'll be let down. This dessert alone is worth going back again soon for. Lingering thoughts of this coconut tapioca dish stayed with me for days! My husband tried a couple cocktails and the bartender was attentive and present to his requests. When he saw my husband watch him pour a rye, I think, that looked intriguing the waiter quietly produced a sample sip of it for him. Mind reading is a great gift for a bartender! He wasn't sitting on us either! Attentive is great over attentive is annoying! This guy nailed it! He also had helped us pair a salad with our dishes and narrowed down dessert choices! Loved it all! Creative food without being so complicated that flavors get lost!

Fab food and atmosphere

By NIcoleLarry |

I somehow missed the Korean connection, but the steak was outstanding and this is a great place to share dishes. Two of us sat outside and the firepit next to us was fired up the minute the sun went down. Lovely evening. Okay to park free behind the restaurant at night.

Great food, but beyond loud.

By Morpheus Z |

This is one of those great places where you see something on the menu but have NO idea what will come to you when you order it. But, everything was absolutely outstanding. Creative, flavorful and great service. I'd give it five dots, but the place is very noisy, so bring your outside voice. This would not normally be a consideration for me, but we brought a job applicant and having a conversation was a bit of a challenge, even on a Monday night. Dress is Seattle metro, reservations a must, parking is standard Seattle. Highly recommended.

We had a fantastic brunch

By Travel_Guy_2015 |

We had a fantastic brunch. It was fun to sit at the counter and watch the (2) chefs prepare various breakfast entrees in the kitchen. The brunch includes a selection of (1) breakfast entrée and a brunch buffet table with various salads, Asian fusion combinations, and dessert. I had a broiled Coulotte Steak, eggs, with cilantro chimichurri with the brunch buffet for $22.00. It was delicious. Word of caution: the restaurant posts an automatic 18% gratuity on the bill (which is okay with me) …. We will be back to try their dinner options which the restaurant is best known for.

Third time and still a charm

By Jen |

I'll make this short and sweet. I've now been to Joule three times over the past year. Each time the food and service has been good. Inventive flavors with twist on traditional Korean dishes that are still approachable. Last night we had the smoked tofu, Chinese broccoli, rice cakes and forbidden black rice. I'm used to this style of cold tofu being half Chinese, but the combination of the hon shimeji mushrooms, green onions and amply smoked tofu was stellar. The smoke wasn't over the top or chemical tasting. I've ordered the rice ovelets every time I've been. It's a mainstay and delicious. The broccoli was super tasty. We asked them to veganize it for my friend. I can't imagine that the flavor could be better. The black rice was my least favorite. I wouldn't say it's bad, but not a standout. The texture was all mushy and the salted fish wasn't fishy or salty enough. When I have a rice porridge out or make it at home, you're generally eating it with other elements that may have crunch or chewiness or some other texture to go with the porridge consistency. Again, not bad, but could be improved. We sat at the bar. The bartender was great. He was attentive, but not over the top. Friendly, approachable, but not hokey. He even made me a delicious mocktail since I'm pregnant. The whole staff made sure our water glasses were full. Over all, another great night at Joule.

A Jewel!

By Jessica D |

This is some of the best Korean-inspired food I've had. We ordered one item from each section and were absolutely stuffed. Highlights were the Wagyu Beef and the Grilled Octopus.

Korean Fusion

By Linda B |

In Wallingford. I don't have much experience with Korean food but it was very enjoyable. Our party of five ordered 7 or 8 plates (can't remember) to share plus one burger for the skeptic. It was all very tasty and the service was excellent. We had reservations at 7:15 and were seated immediately on a Sunday night.

Go now! Do not wait!

By travelfoodieSeattle |

Joule serves a non-traditional style of Korean food, which may sound odd in the telling but every bite we ate was terrific. The portions were generous; three of us shared 5 plates, including one dessert, and were more than satisfied. Definitely try the smoked tofu, the spicy rice cakes, the duck fried rice, and the octopus. Next time we will try the NY strip with pickled chanterelles, the mackerel, the Chinese broccoli, and the clams. Our dessert was the sticky toffee pudding cake, also wonderful. The setting and design are beautiful and could definitely serve for a romantic dinner. And in the colder weather, the outdoor fire pit is roaring and toasty. .

Korean flavors with flair

By Sheri M |

I researched restaurants on Trip Advisor prior to our trip to Seattle and was captured by the website for Joule. I am 100% Korean and my son is an aspiring chef. We wanted to find places that would inspire him and provide us with great food. Joule did not disappoint! Classic ingredients with comfort food flavors, great service. A little off the beaten path but not hard to find with GPS. We tried the sister restaurant, Revel, the next evening! Thank you Joule!

Each Dish Distinctly Excellent

By MarshBruce |

What a delight! This compact but diverse menu offers gourmet specialties. Excellent service. The four of us shared seven dishes, and loved them all. This restaurant should be better known.

Great place for brunch and best octopus in town

By Niels Andersen |

We've been hear twice for dinner parties, once for brunch. Every time a delight. For dinner with a party of 3 or more, share dishes, be sure to gt the octopus. Brunch has both a menu and a buffet. I suggest the menu unless you're in the mood for Hawaiian.

Great brunch!

By Sabrinaschmid |

We went to this place based on Tripadvisor reviews. For brunch there is a little buffet style table that you can get food from before you have your main. (included amazing brazillian food) Then the main dish is huge and keeps you going all day long!

beyond excellent!

By David P |

It is no wonder that Rachel Yang and husband chef Seif Churchi's Joule was selected as one of the 20 best up and coming restaurants in the US in 2013. Their creative culinary skills provide a feast to be remembered. On our recent visit, we shared 8 dishes and 2 desserts. All were unique in flavor, with just a little Oriental bite save the desserts. Wine list focuses on local Washington and Oregon wines. Service is attentive and pacing of the dishes works perfectly. A great treat!

Joule is the real Gem in This Emerald City

By BarabooJane |

Our first time in Seattle and we were hellbent on making it memorable. Our first stop off the plane was Joule and it set the bar very, very high. Brandie set the tone recommending the menu highlights and her own favorites. She is an absolute gem. We started with the smoked tofu. If you like tofu, this is a must. It tastes just like the picture looks. Next, we tried the bone marrow. I had never tried bone marrow before. My partner described it as unctious. Boom. The perfect word for this delicious meat butter. The spicy rice cake was next. This is not your mother's rice cake. It is a client favorite for a reason. Finally, the curry cauli. This, I must say, was the best rendition of cauliflower I've ever had. Go here. Tell Brandi we said hi, and prepare to be wowed.

Good, not great!

By Krisinseattle |

We have eaten here before and thought it much better than this time - could have just been an off-night; or our choices. Our server was great, knowledgeable and attentive. We had the poppyseed noodles, which were very heavy and overshadowed the accompanying flavors. The shrimp cocktail was very good, ($11) the smoked tofu a nice presentation with little cubes covered in a lovely sauce ($13). The winter squash dish was dark and spicy, although nice on a cold winter evening. The Short Rib steak ("that") ($22) was covered with fat and the end pieces not really paletable. The Bavette steak was quite nice ($20) Drinks expensive (Martini $10). Music loud and a mixture of rap and reggae. Seats hard and tables close. Go early or make a reservation.

Asian Fusion

Good sharable dishes. Food tasty and delivered to table as it is prepared. Octopus was outstanding. Service was attentive in casual, warm environment. Note 22% service charge automatically added regardless of number of people.

Came here for brunch!

By Adrianator |

I came here on a Sunday morning for their semi-buffet brunch. Nice contemporary atmosphere. Fusion dining. I don't recall what I ordered but it's a nice place if you want something different than the normal bacon, eggs, and sausage for brunch.

Unusual and Delicious,

By Marc M |

Probably the most unusual Asian-fusion menu ever offered. There were four of us sharing so we were able to order eight different dishes. Everyone of them was delicious. Be adventurous!

Very Good Brunch

By pookala |

A family friendly place for brunch in the Fremont neighborhood, complete with covered and cozy (fire pit) outdoor seating. For $19 you get a nice buffet selection to choose from as well as a main from the kitchen. When we went the buffet was heavy on vegetables: chick peas, kale, beets, salad and 3 kinds of bread - all delicious. For our entrees we shared the excellent porchetta sandwich and their version of a Korean-inspired Eggs Benedict - kale, two poached eggs with a peanut sauce inside a light scallion pancake. Service was affable & efficient. A good choice for vegetarians & foodies, this restaurant also offers some straightforward choices for the non adventurous diner.

Nice brunch spot

By Sonya K |

The open, modern-rustic atmosphere at Joule with the option of sitting in a covered outdoor area made it a nice spot for Sunday brunch. The brunch menu was pricey and limited, especially for vegetarian or vegan options. The accompanying buffet-style serving of cold sweet and savory side dishes had interesting choices.

Superb hamburger

By LowCarbZone |

My son recommended the burger here and I was not disappointed. It is not a large patty, but it is pretty thick and wonderfully seasoned. It is served on a brioche like roll, with lettuce and raw onion. Cheese would detract from the juicy flavor of the burger. The restaurant can be hard to get reservations at, but we opted to sit at a long communal table and were happy with both the service and our "neighbors" at the table.

Creative and delicious

By jasoncrh |

I went here with some friends while in Seattle, and I loved it. The restaurant had a great setting and vibe, near Lake Union. Open kitchen. Great local wines. We were three people and shared 6 dishes, all with the help of our waitress. Loved the octopus and the rice cakes - both unique and delicious. Standouts. Everything was good though. I'd go back.

One of the best bartenders, ever. And amazing food. Great service...

By davidbillstrom |

We will be back. This was a true culinary experience, from the moment we chilled at the bar with a couple of the first small plates... waiting for the rest of our party... until after we dined... and paid the bill. Awesome. Of course, this is 'small plates' but it is far more than Tapas. And there is a definite 'fusion' theme to many of the plates, Asian-influence but never that simple. Check out the menu online to see what you can enjoy... I believe our party had one of everything, save perhaps 2 or 3... and at least one of the plates we ordered again! Yes, that good. I won't call out any particular plate, because They Are All Fantastic. Just start... And speaking of starting, our 45 minutes with Spencer at the bar was a pleasure... and an education. I've been focused on the Negroni as my favorite drink for about 20 years now, and can make one better than some bartenders. Spencer changed all of that... introducing us to an alternative to Campari and even more impressive, teaching us why and how. He made 2 such cocktails not on the menu, after interviewing us on our preferences, and another 2 from the menu... all 4 (divided between 3 people) were perfect... subtle, not overwhelming, and delicious. You learn alot about a place by how the staff treats each other. Sitting at the bar, we had that opportunity as the tables filled and the staff got busy. Mutual respect, and moments taken to explain special requests... or to even provide more of that How and Why to the server, to take back to a table. Impressive. Check it out. Awesome.

Creativity that "Works"!

By Eva N |

Perhaps I’m a little jazzed over this place because I have been living in Fairbanks, AK, but then again, I do have a developed palate and know creativity and quality when I taste it. And if you get my title pun you get two points. This is a small-plates sort of place, with items ranging form $6 to $20 depending. Some are vegetable, others prime beef cuts, and then everything in between with noodles or duck. If you are a vegetarian, or even vegan, you can definitely find things here without resorting to “sad salad”, and if you like your meat, the beef dishes will answer that. We began with a white fish rather like cod called escolar. It was cold smoked and served with pickled seaweed and daikon. Very tasty! The mushroom dish was heavenly - OK, I am Slavic so am born loving mushrooms. These were maitaki in whole clumps, ever so slightly crisped at the fringes, and covered with a pine nut gremolata. We tried the beef carpacchio - what set it apart was the tiny bits of Asian pear on it offering a bright crisp contrast, and the aoli made with spicy cod roe. There was a pea vine salad - yes, the vines, not the pods. Bright green, delicious dressing using preserved lemons, the smoked almond pieces set it off perfectly. Finally the bavette had a nice crust, cooked medium are for a nice texture. All in all my friend and I shared 5 dishes which was an elegant sufficiency for me and he was satisfied, having come in quite hungry. I enjoy Asian and fusion food as often as possible, and yet I was so pleasantly surprised by the many touches in the dishes that paid attention to flavor contrasts, textural surprises. The ingredients were clearly fresh and respected, letting each shine. Though the decor was attractive, the ambience was not what I would call cozy - kind of large feeling because of the ceiling and you could feel how busy it was. There might be better corners somewhere. But, the food was outstanding and service very pleasant. So I had all that food plus 2 beers and the tip - added up to $50 for my half. You know what? Sadly, I’ve spent a lot more for very mediocre food so I feel this is an excellent value. I can’t wait to go back to try more of their dishes!

Amazing Asian Fusion Restaurant

By aschoono |

We were visiting some friends in Seattle and they recommended eating at Joule. We had 4 couples eating and we all loved the experience. Our server took excellent care of us. She gave us great recommendations. The best recommendation was that she told us it was a good idea to order a lot of different things off of the menu and to share. This way we could all get a chance to try everything. I was so glad thinks what we did. We didn’t order everything off of the menu but we were pretty close. Our favorites of the starters were the spicy rice cake, kimchi trio and the black garlic noodles. My favorite entree was the short rib closely followed by the NY strip. We also enjoyed the octopus. Our least favorite was the mackerel. It had good flavor but is a very strong fish. We recommend going with friends and trying as much as you can.

Just okay...

By x2fr |

Came here with a bunch of friends just recently; we got reservations easily (for a Saturday eve). I like the space, maybe even more in the summer when they can have outdoor seating; great bar area; but overall it can be "warmer" and less noisy. Food-wise, we ordered many dishes but the fact that I can barely remember any of it to write about in detail for this review (and no, I wasn't sloshed nor availed of the new pot legalization law! I will though.) and none of us were talking about any of the dishes afterwards (like we usually do after group dinners) just suggests, what?...we had insipid dishes or we had better topics to talk about? To be fair, we don't remember any of the food or drinks being disappointing but on the other hand, it failed to excite--thus the 3 stars; more precisely 2 1/2. Overall, it was a cool place to get together; the drinks and food were good although not sure of value for the money. I'd only come back here if my friends drag me back and they'll pick up the tab :-)

A Modern Korean Gem

By Lynette R |

What an exciting find in Seattle!! Not only was the food excellent, tasty and innovative with their interesting use of spices and sauces but the staff were attentive and knowledgeable when it came to food and wine choices. There were many "stand out"dishes but definately try the beets, the tofu, the mushrooms and the beef. Desserts were also excellent and the combinations of ingredients were a perfect end to a perfect meal.

yummy

By ohayomountain |

We spent an overnight in Seattle and stumbled into this gem. Food was outstanding and service was great. While we read the reviews, we asked our waitress which dishes were her favorites, the meal was out of this world. The Asian/Korean spin made the evening that much better. Worth a visit when you are in town, but be sure to make a reservation, otherwise you might be waiting a long time.

creative Asian fusion

By Jill M |

We ate "other than steak" and found interesting combinations, visually exciting and rewarding in taste. We came when they opened for dinner and were able to get a table without a reservation, but I'd advise a reservation at any other time. Next time I'm in Seattle I'd definitely return here.

Definite must try!

By Laesmith26 |

We tried the eggplant, bone marrow, broccoli, rice cakes, scallops and the burger. All the dishes were unique and incredible in flavour. Highly recommend trying this place out and eating 'family style' Our waitress was impeccable and the food was faultless. Incredible flavours and a great atmosphere!

Tremendous dinner

By barcb |

We had a great dinner at Joule, every course was excellent. The spicy rice cakes are absolutely amazing and should not be missed. The "that" steak was phenomenal, tremendous flavor and excellent meat. The desserts were great as well, we were very happy with out dinner at Joule.

A neat little place

By Vasu B |

Loved the experience of sitting in the outdoor section of the restaurant. The open pit with burning coals was a lovely addition- well at least for that cold and windy day. Great cocktails and flavorful food. The Grits cooked with Shrimp, Chinese sausage, brown butter, ginger and Omelet made with Honshimeji mushroom, Chinese celery, truffle oil were divine!

Great food - questionable service

By Amy M |

Food is delicious but the service left much to be desired. Do not go if you expect seamless service, do go if you can handle questionable service but delicious food!

Still not Korean Food!

By islandgryl |

2nd visit here. Have to admit this time was better. Ate in the outside fire pit to take advantage of the 'power hour'. As Rebecca P writes...it gets pretty pricey...fast. OK...so my complaint is that there is no relation to any Korean food & the food served here. Altho the food was good (but not exceptional for the price) and...they can call it Asian fusion, but if you are an aficionado of Korean food...go elsewhere!

the best food on our trip to USA

By EZZY_13 |

On our whole trip & many restaurants in the USA Joule was the best experience. The modern Korean food which the four of us shared was outstanding in taste concept & variety. The surroundings were pleasant & the wine list was also good in variety & quality. We wish it was also in Australia

Very good everything!

By Lynn P |

We six friends shared a almost perfect meal here. I would give another half star if I could. Not exceptional, but very good. They have a Very Interesting cocktail menu. Those alcohol drinkers at the table highly recommended the ones they got: the one with anise and the Lapsang Souchong-tequila. Unique and daring.. We got all the daring dishes: tartare (excellent!), bone marrow (a bit odd to my taste), geoduck (not my favorite), and it was exciting to try each of the vegetables. Especially the cauliflower, which converted me to a roasted cauliflower fan! Completely delicious, caramelized and crispy at the ends with a flavorful sauce that perfectly complemented the flavor. The pickled dishes were very good. I very much recommend the beef dishes: excellent beef cooked with interesting flavors that never overpowered. I have to admit that I missed noting the desserts, but remember them to be very good, a creamy caramel sauce (my favorite dish!) and some interesting sorbet, green tea, maybe? Very good service, though a bit noisy, which made it fun, in my opinion, but challenging for conversation. Recommend very highly!

I would not recommend

I dined at joule 5/7/24 for my birthday and had a bad experience. I wrote a review on open table and have not received an apology. So, I would like to share that aspect of customer service with everyone, and would. Like them you to see my original review. Overall I had a lovely time. I was celebrating a birthday with good company, we came to spend money, eat and drink our way through the menu. Most plates were delicious and thought there was a lot of balance, flavor and freshness to the plates. However I was put in a position where it left me feeling salty towards joule. I am not one to write reviews, but felt the need to publicly share my experience. My issue is regarding their octopus. When we received it, my partner graciously cut it into bite size pieces so it could be served to our table. The first bite was inedible, it was a piece closer to the beak, but was comparable to chewing on a piece of rubber. After chewing on it for about a minute, i was finally able to swallow it. Someone else tried it and complained about the chewiness of it. I tried a smaller piece, to no avail. Either it was not a good product, or it was not cooked properly. All of that said, that experience is not why I’m writing this review. I’m disappointed that when I told my server, they took the plate away and told us they would not refund us for it. I do not fault my server for that, however I do fault the management. It’s not behavior conducive to retaining a clientele, and in fact, I will not be returning. As a side note, the 4% service charge is also a little weird. I understand the tipping policy is in a state of change nationally as well as locally. However, it’s strange when joule, itself, is retaining those tips. I much rather just give that tip to the employee themselves. I’ve been apart of a couple class action lawsuits where the service staff sued the employer for behavior similar. If anyone on the service staff ever feels like they are not receiving their fair share of that 4% service charge, I suggest they explore their labor rights.

Good food but need to order generously

By BenH95 |

The food is good especially the octopus, "that" steak and the white stuffed kimchi. I just wish there were some carbs to go with some of the food not just the protein. I had the black cod which is I guess their version of the Korean classic "eun daegu jorim", it was great but probably lasted all of 5 semi-mouthfuls. I love their location in Fremont and the decor is lively and fun. I just don't think the portions are very generous to allow sharing.

Tasty, extraordinarily inventive Asian fusion

By Seattle_Hiker |

Our son and daughter-in-law are gifted cooks in their own right, and after doing considerable research, they booked Joule for his birthday celebration. Our group is a microcosm of the U.S. political system, a complete veggie-omni split, which features no fewer than four discerning palates, yet all of our tastes and preferences were met. Joule takes a "family-style" approach to dining: for our party of five they recommended that we order 7-10 dishes. We ordered 7, including two main entrees and three small plates, and we had more than enough to chew on for an extended evening. The chefs and co-owners, Rachel Yang and Seif Chirchi, have won major awards every year since they opened Joule, and every dish was a ringing affirmation of their artistry, beginning with the appetizer: the yellow curry pickled beet was a study in contrasts that stay on your tongue for several minutes. Everyone agreed that their spicy rice cake with chorizo (or with mushrooms) was the highlight of the evening. We ordered two of their steaks, and the consensus was that the babette steak was the winner. The short-rib steak with kalbi and grilled kimchi is their signature dish, but we found it to be not quite as tender, nor was the rib-marbling as well-integrated into the meat. The service was superb. It is such a pleasure to be waited on by a true professional, witty, knowledgeable, and personable. The amazing feature was the prices. Although we spared no expense, and only three of us ordered wine, our bill came to under $50 a person, including the required 20% gratuity.

Wonderful flavors!

By Barbara K |

Yay! First time at Joule for brunch and the buffet theme was Bahamian! Everything was yummy flavors, including the "conch" stew, made with mushrooms. The only disappointment was the sweet roll which was just dough. I have read about much better bready options. We ordered Hash, which, if you like smoked mackerel, was delicious. It would be even better with poached eggs on top. Also got Grits, which I loved. I started with a virgin Bloody Mary, which was so spicy tasty! And the coffee was quite good. Service can be iffy when there's the automatic 20% added on. Everyone here was pleasant and friendly and accommodating, but our server seemed to have an aversion to clearing dirty dishes. I really like the themed buffet idea, which means we can go back again for new tastes!

Creative, delicious, and a good value

By Laura L |

Took my husband, son and his business partner to this little place in Wallingford. It filled up fast. Had the prix fixe for minimum 4 people. Five courses of exquisite and original tastes. I even loved the sweetbreads! Highly recommended. We had a delightful evening.

Delicious Dessert

By sc1009 |

My son and his girlfriend took me here for dessert while i was visiting them in April to have the Joule box, which is what they are famous for...a dessert containing pearl tapioca, ruby grapefruit brulee and coconut. It's a small serving but is delicious!

Fun menu, fun experience

By marcridesbikes |

We met up with some friends from home who also happened to be in town while visiting. A very trendy space, it was bustling with activity and had a very lively atmosphere. One of our guests had some dietary restrictions and our server went out of her way to have the chef go through the menu and let us know what was good to go. Top notch service from that aspect. We enjoyed the bone marrow which was very good for a starter and I would recommend the bavette steak.

Joule is a GEM! Mah sit so yo!!

By westmauian |

Our first ever dining experience in Seattle after our exhausting drive from Pullman through Spokane! Our selected 8:00 reservation gained us a speeding ticket, as we were delayed by an accident at the Summit. But Joule soothed all our frayed nerves and perked our tired brains up with fantastic fare and a great crew and soon all we could think of was the great experience laid out for us by Spencer and Jim! We chose the chilly outdoor seating between the street and the fire-pit; presage of the dichotomy to come! The Yobo-Franco fusion enticed our tastebuds and compelled us to continue to order taste after taste, with our kids getting some gustatory perception of their ethnic diversity with every bite (they're half Korean and a quarter French...much like the food). We ordered "family style" and reveled in blasts of flavor from White stuffed kimchi, Shrimp cocktail 2.0, Beef tartare, Crispy sweetbreads stick, Smoked tofu, Spicy rice cake, Sesame noodle, "that" short rib steak, and Culotte. After dinner we devoured the Brown butter hazelnut cake and White chocolate cremeaux! Definitely global cuisine that is likely to make an impact across the planet!

Amazing Asian Fusion in Seattle

By YayeMama |

Amazing Asian Fusion restaurant with many interesting dishes to share. Nice cocktail menu, as well as a variety of wine selections. Friendly wait staff with a cool vibe atmosphere. You can see the chefs cook if you sit in a particular area of the restaurant. Reservations recommended. I've been here several times on my visits to Seattle and each time I'm impressed with the interesting dishes.

Amazing Asian Fusion Small Plates

By Carmen181 |

Delicious food! Asian fusion small plates makes this restaurant perfect for a date. We didn't have a reservation, so sat at the bar, and the barman was very helpful with drinks and recommendations for what to order. All the food was absolutely delicious, with strong, different and vibrant flavours and I will definitely be back. A must if you are staying in the Fremont area!

Outstanding Asian fusion

By broadway2009 |

Our group comprised eight individuals and we shared about 10 dishes. The flavors were exceptional and unusual. Service was terrific and our waiter was especially helpful. Good selection of beers and wines.

3 Times, 5 Stars

By Karen H |

This is the third time I have had dinner at Joule. Each time has been wonderful. The last time I had smoked tofu, rice cakes and octopus. The server said we had picked winners and I agree

Celebraton / Birthday

By shayla31259 |

I had the pleasure of dining here last weekend - word of the evening: AMAZING - we had the Bone Marrow (highly recommend) and yes I was hesitant, but it was recommended and we were NOT disappointed at all - in fact EVERYTHING we had was outstandng, we had the steak, they were cooked to perfection, so tender we dind't even have to use a knife - looking forward to returning -

Small portion

By Guilin T |

This is first time for our family to come to Joule rest. The location is quite and nice place to hang out with. The food is mix with korean and American food. Its like fusion food. The portion is quite small but the taste is really interesting. Especially geoduck fried rice is little bit different with other food.

Wonderful favors in unusual combination, warm service

By dickanddoug |

We visited the new Fremont location of Joule with our daughter and fiancé to celebrate her birthday. The setting is casual but sophisticated and fun. We ordered two dishes each over a range of vegetables, noodles, meat, seafood. Each dish had some light to moderate connection to typical dishes on a Korean or Chinese menu, with a stronger connection to French, Northwest, or steakhouse roots. The beef short ribs were excellent, and the sirloin melted in our mouths. All presentations were beautiful, as were our cocktails. Our server provided helpful guidance and friendly efficient service. In summary, a delicious meal unlike expected stereotypes for Asian or fine dining destinations elsewhere in Seattle.

Great food

By Judy L |

I love Joule. The food is great, wonderful ambiance, staff are efficient. Very creative dishes. Love the fusion concept. Nice selection of wines, too.

Locals Haven from the Mundane

By Jessica G |

Rainy night in the city and don't feel like schlepping to Whole Foods for, let's face it, another prepared meal and a little overindulgence at the dessert counter? Head to Joule! Even though reservations are a good idea, there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting cozy on the covered patio near the fire pit, complete with a wool blanket draped over the chair. Our night started on the patio with Treveri Sparkling as we waited for another couple. Our deliciously bearded ginger server took the time to highlight his favorites in preparation for our feast. We dined family style inside the restaurant, which now "shares space" with Whale Wins in Fremont. We were given a great overview of the small-large plate spread of the menu, encouraging us to order to our heart's content and that we would be alerted if we needed more/less food. The courses were paired and timed for us - nice touch! Here is what I remember: rice cakes! smoked tofu, tender grilled octopus (yes they're quasi-sentient, but also yummy), and mackerel. our rice cakes (you really don't see these coming) were served with the white kimchi wrapped like an irresistible acidic present and not as spicy as the red stuff. Most of the food was not overly spicy, some of it could have been moreso for my palate. We were tucked in the quiet, intimate back corner and had an absolutely wonderful time. This place would make a great first date, a place to bring out-of-towners who want NW food (what does that even mean anymore), or on that lazy Tuesday afternoon when you want to discover what Korean-French fusion tastes like. Be daring. You won't be disappointed.

Bad wine, hard meat, terrible experience

By sgist |

We went to this restaurant because it was highly recommended. Let me just say that we had to go to a taco place afterwards because we were hungry. The food we were served was average to bad. There were two meat dishes and both had meats that resisted all kinds of teeth. To be fair, they did not charge us for those dishes because we complained. But, even the wine was really bad and that is generally hard to come by.

Dinner

By Catawhorl |

I met some friends here for dinner.... had only caught a glimpse of the menu online before I dashed out to work. Wow.... wow. So good. Interesting drinks. I tried two off the drinks menu...pretty good and not sweet which I like. The food.... kept us going back. The flavors were amazing and made you want to figure out what the heck they were. I had the Steak Tartar, Flat Iron steak, Crème Brulee .... cooked to rare perfection, seasoned so well that it needed nothing to make it any yummier than it already was. The wait staff was there but not obtrusive...perfect. Thanks to my friends for introducing me to another wonderful place to eat in Seattle.... I will be back.

Great date at Joule

By Sweetwine18 |

Great date at Joule; we sat at the chefs counter. My boyfriend had a coconut mojito mocktail of the evening; I had The Thrill of the Chase cocktail. Was delicious; reminded me of a Key West painkiller drink with the fresh nutmeg on top.

Great for a group

By Nick O |

We went with a group of 5, intending to eat next door at The Whale Wins. They were unable to accommodate our group, so we asked at Joule and were seated right away. Our group was able to sample a ton of great food with a bottle of wine (the Cinsault on recommendation from the waiter) for under $40 each. I should mention that we had 1 person who couldn't eat gluten, one who couldn't eat dairy, and the third who can't have nuts. This was not a problem as they were able to satisfy all our needs. We had the Shrimp cocktail, kimchi, heirloom tomato, spicy rice cake, black rice risotto, roasted cauliflower, octopus, and Yukon sockeye salmon. If you go, I'd highly recommend the tomatoes, risotto, and salmon. The rice cake is also good (if you like mochi and chorizo), as is the octopus if you like that. The service was extremely quick.

Great Place for Brunch

By Dukey88 |

Went to this "jewel" to meet a friend for brunch while in Seattle. My first time in the Fremont area. Very good place to go for brunch. Great food and very trendy decor. We really enjoyed it.

Very popular restaurant with good food.

By SaW43 |

A Korean fusion restaurant with creative dishes. The last time we went for brunch. You get a buffet plus a dish of your choosing for $20.We had chicken fried steak, congee and grits plus the buffet. All very good.

Delightful

By Judy C |

We walked in on a busy night and sat at the bar. Service was excellent and we sampled many creative dishes. Being I'm typically skeptical of Asian fusion restaurants but Joule knows it has a foodie clientele. Innovative and delicious!

Stunning evening meal

By Ben G |

We were nearing the end of a trip of a lifetime, having driven from San Diego to Vancouver with a detour through the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley And Vegas. As we were staying in Fremont we thought we’d check out Joule on the recommendation of our AirBnB host. It didn’t disappoint! The food was stunning - genuinely original but delicious rather than just designed to be edgy. The server was great and guided us through the menu picking out and suggesting items she thought would appeal after listening carefully to what sort of things we liked. This was the best meal of a month long trip, and after careful consideration our family agreed it was the best meal we’d had on any of our trips to the States (we’re from the UK, but have done several long trips in all sorts of places). Highly recommend Joule - you’re in for a treat!

Manage your expectations, it's a decent restaurant.

By tcck55210 |

It's a bit pricey, but I feel like it goes with the trendy, fusion vibe. So, I knew what I was getting myself into when I went. :) I really like the environment here. There's a cute fireplace in a small outdoor seating area. Perfect for Seattle summers! Then there are giant doors that open so it's like an open-air restaurant. I came here with a good friend and we sat at the bar, which was nice so we watched the chefs prepare everything. I wish that the chefs were more engaging though, they didn't really seem to be happy or enjoying themselves. So that kind of sucked. But I had good company and we just ignored them as they were clearly ignoring everyone at the bar top. We ordered a couple dishes and shared it family-style: salad with egg and Chinese sausage, black rice risotto with cod, octopus, and kalbi marinated steak. Then we split the tapioca pudding, even though were stuffed, just because we HAD to try it. The salad was quite salty, the Chinese sausage in it was wayyyy too overcooked and tasted just like little bits of bacon. What a horrible use of Chinese sausage! The black rice risotto, which sounds strange to me, was my favorite of all the dishes. Perfectly cooked risotto, excellently balanced with the saltiness of the cod. I loved it. I want to learn to make it now. Yum! The octopus was overly spiced and charred. It didn't have much flavor. I felt like it was there more for the novelty factor versus really making an impact. Meh. The kalbi marinated steak was pretty good. It was a tender piece of meat and cooked properly. But not worth the price (I want to say it was $20 or something). It was good, better than the octopus and the salad. The tapioca pudding was AMAZING. I think I will only come back to have that pudding again. It's light and refreshing. So tasty!! Overall, the drinks are overpriced, some of their novelty dishes are overpriced, but there's some good dishes here. The service was pretty good. The chefs were extremely bored. But I had a good time and I'm intrigued to try Revel, their sister restaurant. I'd definitely come back for the black rice risotto and the tapioca pudding.

No 4% surcharges please.

By Steve S |

The short rib is the signature dish but it is not the traditional short ribs. Good flavor but tough and chewy, hard to eat. Potatos came out 10 minutes before the entree. Then the final surprise is a 4% surcharge on the bill that you don’t know is coming.

Delicious, sophistcated Korean fusion in Wallingford

By KarenBx103 |

My husband and I had a great dinner at Joule this evening and we will definitely be back. We shared three excellent small plates: black sesame noodle, roasted cauliflower with smokey yogurt and mackerel with green chili cilantro. We also tried two desserts, panna cotta and a chocolate ganache cake both of which were rich and satisfying without being too heavy. Cocktails are also good--Sweet Freedom was perfect on a warm summer night. Highly recommended!

Great if everyone in your party is adventurous... if not... avoid.

By lindsstrom |

Great food if you enjoy Korean but virtually no other options if not. Attended with a team for our offsite and half the team left hungry as they are more cautious with food. In the end I would say totally go if everyone (everyone being keyword) is a foodie... if not try another place!

A Seattle Must

By redhead_roaming |

I cannot describe how great this place was. They recommended to share plates, about 2/person. It was extremely difficult to see this place but it and Whale Wins share an entrance. The only sign is a small one that I didn't notice until we had walked up. The staff were super great. We had Jamie who knew when to check on us and when to let us chat (we were there for 4.5 hours). The decor is so fun including near the entrance where it's open and there's a fireplace and a bar. The food was incredible. They must change their menu often because TA's is incorrect. My favorite was the Beef Tartare and the cod. They say their most popular dish is the Spicy Rice Cake. We also had the smoked tofu (not my favorite), heirloom tomatoes, octopus, shirt ribs and a couple others that I cannot recall. We also had two desserts - one had beans on it which we were all skeptical about but it was amazing!

Repeater

By saucymoe |

With so many great places to eat, it's rare for us to frequent a place. This is pretty much one of the only fine dining places in our regular rotation. When the kid's away at the grandparents, we go here. When the kid's with us and we want great food, we go here. When friends want to go out, we recommend here. And here's the thing: we don't even go very deep on the menu. Oh we've tried, and everything has been great, but there are a few things that we can't quit: smoked tofu - I want to lick the plate; melt-in-your-mouth bavette; chinese broccoli. What more do we need? Like their other spot Revel, you don't find food like this all over town, the "Seattle Fancy" food that really is undifferentiated IMHO. This is very different. And very delicious. Enough typing, we're going there right now. We know what we're getting. Delicious.

Seattle Star

By Rumples |

We ate at Joule's old location on 45th St. a couple of years ago and were unimpressed. So when "Bon Apetit" ranked it in a tie for 9th as one of the hot 10 new restaurants in the United States for 2013, we decided to give the place another chance. And boy are we glad that we did! We couldn't fault the food, ambiance or service. The restaurant (Korean fusion) encourages family-style dining, so my husband and I chose a smoked tofu salad, a manila clams noodle dish and a dessert (brown-butter hazel nut cake) to share. Hunks of tofu arrived with honshimeji confit, dressed in a soy truffle vinaigrette. The inspired flavors and tofu texture combined to make this dish extraordinary. But the manila clams proved to be the salad's equal. The succulent clams were mixed with fennel pappardelle and salted black beans in a delicious broth. We finished every last drop and had to resist an urge to lick the plate clean. After these two winners, our expectations were high for dessert and the cake more than met them. It tasted as if it had just emerged from the oven and was rich but not too sweet. We thought the prices were reasonable -- $9 for the salad and $16 for the clams. The range of prices for items, which included starters, salads, rice/noodles, vegetables, steak, other than steak (octopus, mackerel, etc.) and desserts was $6 - $19. The informal ambiance features a high ceiling, wooden tables placed fairly close together, and a counter with dining stools. There is also an outside patio, which was filled on the warm summer night that we were there. Service was excellent. Waitstaff worked quickly, efficiently and in a pleasant, professional manner. They added immensely to our evening's enjoyment.

Hidden Gem!

By misopiso88 |

Joule is a Seattle favorite for me and many of my friends. The menu is inventive and everything is scrumptious. I try to eat vegan and they have a wonderful "vegan version" of many dishes. My advice is to order several items and share them all. Reservation is a MUST. Highly recommend!

Nicely Presented and Tasting

By Highridge6161 |

Enjoyed our meal at the Chef Counter. Not much interaction with the cooks, which we believe is one of the reasons people like sitting at the counter. But that aside, the food was very well presented and the favors were incredible. We enjoyed the Beef Tartare, Smoked Tofu, Crispy Eggplant (wow!!!) and the Octopus. Definitely will recommend Joule and will return. Will also try Rachel and Seif's other restaurants. Will be going down to Portland soon and look forward trying Revelry.

Loved the Korean fusion

By PJSGFJ95 |

Come with an open mind and some knowledge of Korean food - and you'll be greatly rewarded. But if you are looking for traditional Korean food, go somewhere else. Korean food here is reimagined into wonderful dishes with familiar flavors but some innovation and creativity. For example, teokbokki is a spicy Korean rice cake dish, their version slices the rice cake like pasta, combines it with a spicy sauce with chorizo sausage and in a subtle final touch they crisp the edges of the rice cake. The crisp edges is a subtle nod to another Korean treat - the crispy rice found at the bottom of the rice cooker (wow). The result is an amazing new experience of the original. This type of fanciful innovation goes on and on with many things on the menu. We still crave traditional Korean food, but our family of 5 really enjoyed the food at Joule. The ambience and the wonderful service round out the whole experience. Be prepared to pay higher than usual for a night out, but I thought it was worth it.

A Real Taste Treat

By Bill V |

We stopped at Joule for dinner after a late afternoon shopping spree nearby. We didn't have reservations and the restaurant was packed so we waited 20 minutes to be seated. We used the wait time to review the menu. The dinner was worth the wait! The waitstaff was helpful, attentive, seated us as soon as they could, and explained the menu, serving sizes and helped with selections that would go well together. We ordered a glass of the house cabernet, which was excellent. We selected a Bone Marrow hors d'oeuvre, with spicy anchovy butter and leek. My wife chose the Smokehouse Steak, prepared with Vietnamese coffee rub, and served with parsnip. I selected the Mackerel, with green curry, cilantro, black current and chimichurri, which is an Argentinean sauce or condiment. For desert, we had a Swiss roll, wintergreen marshmallow, ginger ash ice cream, cocoa crumbs and spiced caramel. The food looked, smelled and tasted great. Darren and the Table Crew that served us were outstanding! Rachel Yang, the chef, is a James Beard Best Chef-nominee and author of My Rice Bowl, a cookbook with 75 recipes based on her Korean fusion cuisine, inspired by cultures from around the world. It's an exciting restaurant with a casual décor, excellent service and an excitingly refreshing taste treat. We really enjoyed ourselves! Joule also has a weekend brunch with a rotating buffet selection that changes every month - Sat and Sun from 10:00a to 2:00p. We'll probably go back for that real soon.

Delicious Dinner

By ReaderPat |

Joule is the restaurant my son chose for his "birthday" dinner during my recent trip to Seattle. I enjoyed the atmosphere and decor. The service was excellent. I loved the $12 Deviant cocktail. The chef sent us a yellow curry pickled beet with fig and spiced pistachio oil. I haven't developed a taste for beets, but this amuse bouche may have changed my mind. We shared the spicy rice cakes, which I considered the absolute STAR of our meal and Chinese broccoli with walnut pesto. We also shared two entrees. The chuck flap steak was good, and the halibut was even better. I will definitely try to return on a future trip, if only for the spicy rice cakes.

Best restaurant in Seattle

By kaarinabeans |

This is a MUST for anyone who lives or travels to Seattle if you like to try rich flavors that will blow your mind. I am a huge fan of this place for atmosphere, food and wine. All excellent!!! If you love Asian food and want something a little different this should be at the top of your list!

Mostly Outstanding

By Rumples |

Four of us met here at 5 p.m. for an early dinner on a Saturday. We received our requested seating at the back of the room because one of our party has a hearing loss and this is the quietest location. The greeter even offered to lower the volume on the recorded music, a first for us in Seattle dining, but we declined. In this corner, we had no problems talking in normal tones and being understood by everyone at the table. Joule specializes in dishes for sharing and we chose seven -- black sesame noodles, bone marrow, cauliflower, duck breast, octopus, pepper steak and smoked tofu. Each came out as soon as it was ready. Only the pepper steak and octopus failed to live up to my expectations. The steak proved to be slightly tough and I considered the octopus to be somewhat rubbery. (No one else agreed.) The other dishes offered superb flavor and perfect consistency -- a truly marvelous and satisfying meal. We enjoyed a bottle of white wine during dinner and shared two delicious desserts, a matcha trifle and a chocolate torte. From beginning to end, the service was impeccable. The final bill came to $259, which included tax and an automatic 20 percent gratuity, now charged by most upscale Seattle restaurants. A small parking lot is located behind the restaurant and there is free parking throughout the immediate neighborhood. Our lodging is nearby, so we walked to the restaurant.

snooty and offputting

By slappy42 |

This place is so very quazi-bougie. Employees are self-important and show little regard for their patrons. It wasn't until my bill arrived that I understood why. They add a 20% gratuity to your bill and feel no obligation to earn it. There are too many good restaurants in Seattle to waste your time and money here.

Jewel of a Joule

By RayneLa |

Would return if lived in Seattle. Waiter was very helpful. Went pretty much on her recommendations as this was our first experience with Korean food. Beef Tartare was very good. The Spicy Rice Cake was nothing like we imagined but was absolutely outstandingly great. The flavors was awesome. We love spicy Cajun food, and it was spicy and with a zing but delicious. I could have eaten just this as a meal. Keep it coming. Pork chop was a little tough. Beef Royale was good. We had five different dishes to share between the two of us. Plenty to eat. Very good experience.

Exceeded our expectation

By Fly Girl |

Read about this restaurant in Bon Apetit. Loved everything about it. We sat near the outdoor fire pit. Cozy and romantic. Enjoyed every bite. The service was excellent ! You enter through the same entrance as another french restaurant. Then hang a left into Joule. Love the French/Asian inspiration menu selections. I recommend reservations.

THE best Asian fusian

By Soonkeum |

Had heard good things about the food so had high expectations which were surpassed! There was a group so we ordered a large variety of small plates and appetizers. Corn bread with gouda cheese is magic. The bacon butter to die for with the seaweedbutter close behind. We all loved the shortrib burger, but it is very rich. Kimchi was not remarkable and there should have been Korean beer on the menu but over all the best in terms of creativity and taste. On my must go to place in Seattle

Good fusion cuisine

By Sarah V |

I am usually put off by anything with "fusion" in the description, but I am glad that I trusted the reviews and went here anyway! My husband and I stopped in for a nice dinner during our last trip to Seattle and were quite pleased. The layout is perfect for warm summer nights with plenty of windows and a cozy patio, and the main interior dining room is open and airy (with a great view of the line). Our server was timely and informative- she gave us some excellent tips on ordering as well as some good menu recommendations. We started with the white kimchee and the spicy rice cakes. The kimchee itself was a bit different than what I've had before (a bit more on the sour side), but it was a perfect compliment to the rice cakes. The cakes themselves had a taste reminiscent of Pad Thai, and the texture was awesome- kind of like gnocchi made of rice. YUM. The next dishes we had were the smoked octopus and "That Short Rib." The octopus had good flavor, but I'm not sure I'd get it again. I am usually a fan of octopus, but this seemed a little on the mushy side, which was unusual... The short rib, however, was excellent! The seasoning and doneness were spot-on. I'd eat that again in a heartbeat. We tried a few different cocktails with our meal... some good, some just so-so. I am sure many people would like them, but a few were a bit too sweet (and weak!) for my taste hehe. That said, our waitress took back one I didn't care for and replaced it free of change, which was great (good customer service). Overall, our dinner at Joule was very nice. I would definitely like to come back again, enjoy the ambiance, and try more of the menu.

Something for everyone

By DLB333 |

Very friendly and attentive service. Grits with shrimp and chorizo was perfect. My family had the buinch buffet and were very happy with it and their entrees.

French-Korean Fusion Cuisine In Seattle's Trendy Wallingford Neighborhood

By Brad D |

Wallingford is one of the fastest growing urban neighborhoods in Seattle with "hip" restaurants springing up all over the place. One of the best is Joule, and if you're into exploring creative one-of-a-kind dishes, then Joule is a "must try" for sure. I recently moved to the neighborhood and quickly became a regular. Everything I have tried so far has been over-the-top delicious. The atmosphere is minimalist modern with a "chic" feel, but the vibe is definitely relaxed and friendly. They have some outdoor seating on a covered patio with a cool fire pit that warms the air on chilly evenings. While they do serve meat (and proudly so), the menu is vegetable focused. Omnivores, Vegetarians and Vegans will all find plenty to eat at Joule and dishes that will please all most any palate. The Toast with Black Sesame Butter is to die for- make sure you order the large portion, especially if you are dining with others. The Chinese Broccoli is also superb- it has a very subtle charred flavor and is dressed with roasted garlic and walnuts. The libations are also creative and delicious and they have a decent selection of wines. Be advised, however, that the restaurant can get loud, very loud, when they get uber busy. If you are prepared for this possibility, and in a mood where a little background roar is acceptable, you will be fine. Just don't go to Joule expecting a quite & intimate dinner for two.

Superb!

By chigagotraveler |

I went to this restaurant with my daughter who lives in Seattle. It was a busy night, but the hostess and all the servers were so nice and welcoming. We sat outside for a drink by the fire pit. It had been a rainy windy day last Saturday, but luckily the evening weather had calmed down. We sat at the Chefs Counter, and it was a lot of fun to watch the fast-paced process. We had a delicious meal, thanks to all the recommendations of our server. The rice cakes were wonderful and the beef was tender with a wonderful sauce. Broccoli was perfectly cooked with great spices and just the right amount of heat. Cannot wait to go back on our next trip! we ordered. Great decor and innovative food-

Not to be missed

By RioBrad |

Recommended by a local I met the night before, she was spot-on! Sat at the counter (by choice) and was able to watch the 4 chefs "killin' it! The attention to detail in cooking was amazing. Octopus a must. Can't wait to return to eat my way through the menu. Also, service was a 10...

Joule is a true Jewel of a Dining Experience

By Norma R |

Dinner at Joule can be defined as great food, ambiance and service. At a recent week night dinner, I dined with a group of seven, where we ordered several dishes to taste. Loved the Spicy Rice Cake, chorizo, pickled mustard green - what a meld of flavors. The Pork Chop with date molasses, charred apple slaw was a very generous portion, tender and probably my favorite entree. For anyone looking for a burger that will blow your taste buds, the Kalbi burger with horseradish, giardiniera was outstanding - juicy, well seasoned and encased in a lovely, crusty artisan roll. The Seaweed Risotto with pickled leeks and smoked chili was a more laid back dish -creamy and rich; very filling. Loved every one of the vegetable sides, especially the Maitake, with pine nut gremolata. Our server was knowledgeable, warm and attentive. Can't wait to return - a terrific dining experience!

Amazing brunch

By disugi |

We went for brunch on a Sunday. It is a meal I will remember for quite a while, in the best way. The buffet had a Taiwanese theme and the cold noodles were delucious. So was the Chinese Donut Salad (yes, a donut salad). I ordered the scallion pancake that came with peanut sauce, arugula and poached eggs inside. So delicious. Their Bloody Mary is good and comes garnished with pickled okra and beef jerky. Service was so friendly and everyone genuinely seemed to enjoy working there.

sweet and sour

By Vicky D |

My husband & I were excited to try this hot spot in Seattle. The space is well designed and lovely. We started our meal with the Beef Tartar and it was delicious, more of a dice with excellent flavors. As we ate our first course, the second came to the table. Tomato and Onion Salad, nicely garnished with crispy shallots. When the third course came as we were eating the second one, I started to see a couple patterns. I told the server we were not ready for the dish and he offered to hold it- what were they going to do with the clam and pasta dish to keep the quality, I'm not sure. We kept it but mentioned we hoped the last course would not be so rushed. To their credit, they listened. The predominant flavors at this restaurant are sweet, salt & vinegar in almost everything we ate. Each dish was well executed but the meal as a whole felt redundant and muddled. Wine list and cocktails are well chosen for food pairing. Great job to the woman who chooses the wines. I will also bring up that several of the severs were dressed pretty casually for a fine dining experience, appropriate for a coffee shop or EVO next door.

Amazing Flavors

By joreyn |

Made our first visit to this hip Seattle Reastaurant yesterday. It's easy to see why so many of the food critics, locally and nationally, are giving Joule top scores! The flavors are many and they are all fantastic. Sour, salty, hot crunchy, it's a pretty amazing experience. We started with a shrimp cocktail with a sauce based on ginger beer, with pickled ramps and pork belly to round out the taste. Wow. For veg, we had roasted cauliflower with a smoky yogurt sauce, marinated leeks and bonito flakes. This dish was visually surprising as well as being another great flavor combination. The bonito flakes, when heated, wave back and forth like they are alive. We also had a maitake mushroom with a pine nut gremolata. Earthy, with a tangy note. Went perfectly with my staek. For protein I had a shortrib steak which is marinated, cooked mediuum, and served with grilled kimchee and a grilled poblano pepper. A Korean riff on Carne Asada. Delicious! My wife had Halibut cooked meuniere style with red curry and pickled apple. She loved it. Joule has mastered the notion of pairing amazing flavors with a blend of heat, tang, sweet, salty and umami. It really works. Also, the service is impeccable and informative -0 the latter being crucial in understanding and appreciating all the unique ingredients. Expensive? Not outrageously so. Loved it.

James Beard Nominated!

By kikirob |

Loved the menu. We tried beef tartare, grilled octopus, black sesame noodles and beef short rib with kimchi. Everything was amazing. Can't wait to go back to try more! Atmosphere was fun and modern with eating bar in view of chefs magic, outdoor patio with fire pit and nice bar. Service was excellent. 5 star*****

Not tasty

By Monica078 |

We've been to this restaurant twice. The first time was in August at that time we enjoyed the food and the experience hence came back after a while on a Saturday night in October. This time we didn't enjoy the meal at all. We got turnip cakes that were loaded with cinnamon and sugar. Mackerel that came with some sort of chimichuri and raisins and nothing starchy, not a well balanced dish that left a bad aftertaste. Burger which was tasty but kind of sweet and served with sweet pickles on the side. The server didn't check on us after serving the food, only at the end and, when we told him that we didn't enjoy the food he just said that this can happen. Maybe we chose the wrong dishes but in a restaurant with a small menu like this, there should be no bad dishes. This visit was a two star max, the third star rating is for the previous positive experience.

Definitely worth return visit

By Floridagal65 |

Variety of Asian fusion was great and family/table sharing is a must. However going in the summer with an open kitchen is not ideal as the AC was not great. Also, if you need a highchair call to confirm they have one in working order

Creative food and great service

By Ana L |

We had so many choices and ended up ordering 6 dishes for our party of 4. Our party consisted of both vegans and omnivores and there were great choices for all. Our favorites were the crunchy eggplant (surprise like by a former non-fan) and the smoked tofu. We were also fans of the roasted cauliflower and tandoori cod. All of the plates belonged in the clean plate club.

Excellent meal - our new favorite!

By TobaniSeattle |

We went with friends, so there were four of us in total. This is key because it means we were able to share more plates! We took the recommendation and ordered family style, average two plates per person, so we ended up with 8 plates for dinner: Beef tartare, smoked escolar, green salad, spicy rice cake with chorizo, Chinese broccoli, maitake mushrooms, grilled octopus, and mackerel. They were all fantastic, very flavorful and inventive. There was one unanimous favorite: the spicy rice cake with chorizo - wow! The service was attentive and our plates came out at a nice pace - we were never really just waiting but we weren't overcome by plates either. I also really appreciated that when we were served a dish they announced what it was as they placed it on the table, super helpful since we ordered 8 dishes! We also tried two deserts: the chocolate mousse and the Joule Box (tapicoa, coconut, grapefruit). Both were good but I think the Joule Box for summer is the better choice since it's lighter and fruity. Overall we had an absolutely delicious meal and are already planning our next dinner there.

Creative Meal

By ElGuru71 |

Joule serves Asian fusion cuisine family style, with a particular focus on the Steak dishes. The dishes ranged from o.k. (Geoduck Fried Rice) to excellent (Ribeye Steak) with some nice surprises (Rice Cakes with Chorizo). The service was friendly and attentive, but the dishes took way too long to be served, especially considering the small size of the restaurant. Overall I appreciated the creativity and flavor. I would return, but it is not a "must-stop" for those in Seattle.

Wonderful

By Neal and Nan S |

Our group of four were worried about inside dining and COVID and asked for outside seating which was not available but soon we received call from the manager, Brandi, who arranged for table on patio. Service and food perfect! Will definitely return.

A Jewel of a Joule is Back

By DM1traveler |

Joule was closed for what seemed a long time but they are back and, if possible, even better than before. We had a phenomenal Korean fusion dinner tonite including salad and shrimp appetizers and steak (perfectly prepared with kimchi) and a side of risotto. And even had room for the chocolate sesame cake - all superb. Wonderful neighborhood partner to Revel. Outstanding flavors, great service. Glad Joule is back and still a jewel.

Incredible Food and Ambiance

By seattlecaroline |

I'd never gone to Joule in its old location but at this point, in its new digs, I can't wait to go back! My husband and I have been twice now in the last 6 months, on special occasions, and the food, service and ambiance has been awesome. Apparently it just won a Bon Apetit Award for one of the best 50 NEW restaurants in the country. That doesn't surprise me! So I gave a friend who just got married a gift certificate to go there! The food is creative, reasonably priced and always so inspiring. I like spicy food and there's always something on the menu that I know I'll love. The plates are reasonably sized, with nice hints of Korean flavor, the atmosphere is wonderful - open and airy - and we've had the same friendly wait staff every time. It's great for big groups, or just two! I hear the brunch is amazing so I'll need to go back for that too! :)

They've moved

By smbrannan |

1st - Joule isn't on 45th any more. Be warned. But it is definitely worth the effort to track them down to their new location. The service, ambience and food are all excellent. A terrific find in Seattle. Try the spicy rice cakes, paired with a sparkler. . . Wow!

Great atmosphere, fabulous food

By AliciaMa |

I went here on a whim with a friend and it was so good we had to come back on our next day off! The atmosphere was great - relaxed mixed with a touch of sophistication. The open air porch during nice summer days really capped it off. And the food? Fantastic combination of flavors and textures (though a touch pricey). I highly recommend the Joule burger - I don't know what they've done to it but it's the best burger I've ever had. Uniquely savory with just the right amount of texture contrast with the bun. Tip: you can order the burger during happy hour for a discounted $10!

As in Angie?

By Steven N |

Yes I know it isn't spelled the same. 4 of us showed up and ordered beef tartare,Chinese broccoli, fried rice, short ribs, smoked tofu and like 4 other apps The food was excellent! I have over 70 reviews that I have done on trip advisor and it is completely rare for an excellent review. Service and presentation was superb. I do warn that if you are a basic meat and potatoes guy then you may not enjoy this menu. The items are French Fusion I would guess. Everything we ordered was excellent I can't say enough. Why eat here? If you enjoy something completely different then this place is for you Why Not? If you must have Amaretto drink then you won't be happy. They do not carry this liqueur .

A wonderful evening at Jould

By karen a |

I had my first trip to Seattle and visited Joule with friends for dinner. Joule was very crowded but we had reservations and were immediately seated, I would recommend reservations if you try Joule. The restaurant recommends family style but the sizes were more like tapas style. The menu is original with wonderful presentations of all the food. Although we were full from our dinner we were tempted to share the dessert, the Joule box and it was amazing. Caution your bill can easily add up with drinks and various courses to share.

Amazing

By lyd_lopez |

Delicious! Our group of 4 shared about 10 dishes and all were superb. Great wine/beer/cocktail list.

Awesome find out of the hub of Downtown Seattle!

By sunvalleygal |

Just wondered into this little neighborhood restaurant and was very pleased with service, atmosphere and food! Hard to explain the type of food. But we had a fantastic meal and I defiantly would eat here again, served family style, ment for shareing.

Try happy hour on a weeknight!

By elizabethamysmith |

Good food and cocktails. Menu is a little limited for someone like me (dietary restrictions), but everything I've had has been very tasty. A little pricey, but happy hour is a good bet.

Overrated food and customer service

By Hainboka |

People recommended me this restaurant, so I took an out-of-the-town guest for dinner, which was also my first visit. Getting a reservation was difficult and there is a strict rule up front about vacating the table within two hours. The experience startd badly when we had to wait more than 30 minutes for our table because the patrons would not leave the table nor were the waitress and manager asking them despite they had finished the meal for some time. So we had to start at the counter after the long wait and eventually they moved us to a table. After this hassle, we thought at least the food would delight us. I grew up with Korean food but owner chef tried to do a Korean fusion which tasted the same regardless of what we ordered. The dishes were also salty. I for one cannot endorse this restaurant which scores poorly on service but more importantly on food. There is definitely room for improvement in all fronts.

Lots of Tasty Small Plates

By dlgdlg |

My son took me here on my trip to Seattle. I always enjoy the unique restaurants that Seattle has to offer, but this was one of my favorites. We sat outside, fairly close to the fire pit and it was very comfortable for a cool, evening in late September. I let me son order and we had such an assortment of plates to share - beef tartare, shrimp, squash salad, a dish with rice cakes and several more. Each was so different, but they were all delicious. I loved trying so many different tastes and textures. I'll certainly request to go there again on my next trip to Seattle.

Great food, but exceptionally noisy

By Sandy N |

We came here for brunch on a Sunday and found the menu to be very different and interesting. I had the pancake, which had two eggs on top and was filled with greens. My sister had the chorizo, which had a Korean twist to it. Both were good. It's a lively restaurant and the clientele was a younger crowd. The only downside is that it was incredibly noisy. We had to shout to each other to be heard.

Incredible flavors

By FoodFan1966 |

The menu is set up with a lot of smaller plates for sharing, as well as entree portions. I would recommend ordering some starters as the kitchen is pretty slow about getting food out. However, when it does come out, it is really delicious. There are some unique dishes (geoduck fried rice) and really stellar flavor combinations that make for a very enjoyable dining experience. The menu is rather limited, but all made to order in the open kitchen. The waitstaff is attentive, and the wine list is very nice. Overall, a really lovely meal.

Great pre-dinner drinks spot

By Annrachelle |

Funky neighborhood locale with great drinks! This place has nice outdoor space that opens up to the indoor restaurant space making it light and airy.

First and Last

By DoobiBoy |

Went there for the first time and brought the family. We ordered probably 5 main dishes and 2 appetizers but the waiting time was terrible. The place was not at full capacity at that time so you start to think if kitchen production is in trouble and it really was, a 45 minute wait to complete the whole order. Food intervals came as much as 12 mins before the next one arrived. I would hope that this was a freak incident for there sake. Food was tasty.

Eclectic Korean

By Evan R |

Had dinner with some business associates and shared several of the starters - tartare, carrots, kimchae, rice cake, bone marrow and cauliflower. The marrow had some heat to it, but each dish was fresh and flavorful. I had the Bavette steak as the main - seasoned well and cooked perfectly.

Awesome

By Kwan G |

I love this place. I have gone to the other place the same owner's/Chef run called Revel in Freemont, WA. We did the New Years Eve meal either 3 course or 5. We did the 3 and every bit of it was delish...! I absolutely love the Chef's at both restaurants!! Revel though will still be our "go to" when we want a guaranteed awesome meal.

Great Korean fusion

By JaC |

Tasty, fresh and creative food. Loved the rice cakes and the steak. Korean fusion at its best. I'd go again.

Get ready for big, bold flavors!

By Lynne P. T |

One of my favorite restaurants in Seattle. Casual, open air in the summer. Relaxed service. Order family style. Fusion Korean/French food, as far as I am concerned. A few signature dishes such as "crispy rice cakes" which are chewy, not crispy (but addicting all the same). Excellent beef, amazing halibut. I am not a dessert lover, but ending the meal (after a lot of spice) with the tapioca, pudding and cold orange melange is addicting. I do not think you will be disappointed, unless you really like food without this much character.

Amazing Food; Poor Service

By Rumples |

Joule -- a Korean fusion delight -- has been one of our favorite upscale Seattle restaurants since it opened on the city's Fremont/Wallingford border. Recently, my husband and I had a special occasion to celebrate so we went here for an early dinner on a weekday at 5 p.m. The place is so popular that even a week ahead, the only reservation time after 5 was 8:30 p.m. The evening got off to a good start with a big "Welcome Back" from the greeter, who immediately seated us at one of the tables in a long line against a wall. The menu consists of a series of a few items under categories, such as starters and salads and are recommended for sharing. We opted for the smoked tofu salad, roasted cauliflower and black cod. The tofu arrived first, followed quickly by the other two. All arrived beautifully presented, perfectly prepared and exquisite in taste with a wonderful combination of ingredients. For dessert, I had a delicious Joule Box (pearl tapioca with ruby grapefruit and coconut) while my husband enjoyed the restaurant's take on apple pie. I would have given five dots for the food alone. But the service, or lack thereof, dragged my rating down. Though our server was most pleasant, we never saw her at our table or in the vicinity after our food arrived. Granted, the restaurant filled fast and became quite busy. But anytime we needed something, such as an order of bread, we had to wave someone down. No one kept an eye on our progress or seemed to care about whether we needed anything or liked our meal. It took 30 minutes for our desserts to arrive. No one came to apologize for the delay or explain why the dishes had yet to arrive. My husband finally had to get up from the table, search out our server and ask what was happening. Supposedly, the delay occurred because the kitchen was warming the pie. For 30 minutes? The final bill, which also included a glass of wine plus 10 percent tax and 20 percent service charge came to $103. Many Seattle restaurants now automatically add this charge. But all the others that we have gone to continue to give excellent service.

Full-On AH-MAZING

By LESBourgeoises |

Great service, a groovy environment and some of the best vegan food I've ever eaten. This isn't a vegan place; Make your alterations and let the helpful staff make the substitutions. It's full-on fantastic with subtle flavours that will blow your mind.

One of Seattle's Best

By Rumples |

We go to this Korean-fusion restaurant regularly and often take visitors there for the gastronomical experience. The menu features creative offerings that more than satisfy, with the "Wow" factor always present. For example, tonight three of us shared black rice risotto with salted black cod and fennel; roasted cauliflower with bonito and smoked yogurt; wag yu bavette with truffled pine nuts and artichokes; and Yukon sockeye with fermented black beans and watercress. We also shared two desserts: blackberry yuvu curd and the Joule box, which is pearl tapioca, ruby grapefruit brûlée and coconut. As usual, everything was perfectly prepared and absolutely delicious. Our server helped us with our selections by answering questions about some items. She was pleasant, professional and efficient. We have had many other servers here and they have also been topnotch. The restaurant's casual ambiance includes a dining counter, where customers can watch food preparation; tables; a bar; and an outside terrace. I recommend the terrace for those who want to have a quiet conversation. It can become quite noisy inside. Parking is available behind the restaurant and curbside.

Knocked Our Socks Off

By aka1230 |

My wife and I visited Joule hoping for a nice date night. We didn’t know we’d be in for such a treat! Both the food and cocktails were stellar. Service was prompt and friendly. Can’t wait to come back. My only feedback: the tables are very close to one another. I understand optimizing seating for revenue, but there’s definitely some downsides to sacrificing personal space. Unfortunately, the couple at the table next to us was fighting the whole time they were sitting down, and because we were so close to them, it put an “awkward” tint on an otherwise delightful experience! We obviously realize that Joule isn’t responsible for their patrons’ behavior, but if we hadn’t been in such an intimate seating arrangement, we probably wouldn’t have noticed or been effected by the bickering quite as much.

Pretty good but hard to find something that's amazing

By nslarizona |

it was my idea to visit Joule. I was hopeful that it would be incredible. If I had only ordered the ribeye, then yes, I might have said amazing. Well, maybe not because our server/bartender was sort of off. Maybe I'm overly critical but it just didn't seem like she employed the healthiest habits around the food and beverages. The vibe was good in the restaurant but we ordered bone marrow which was a little light on volume but great on tase. Then we tried green beans that had no taste and were told to pass on the rice and also the cauliflower. So it was on to the steak. That was lovely. Overall, I'd say I'd pass on a return visit. Maybe I missed the opportunity to try other great things but my experience was underwhelming. Sorry to say that. Seriously.

Food Heaven

By YayeMama |

What an amazing restaurant for anyone who loves trying different combinations of flavors and tastes. The menu has enough to satisfy anyone with selections for those who are also gluten free and vegetarians. Very interesting cocktail menu with new liqueurs and herbal + citrus flavors. Attentive and friendly staff. Reservations recommended. You can try lots of dishes here because everything is family style.

Flawed

By Wep25 |

Ok the food was good to great, and the service was fine. So much for the positives. Place was extraordinarily hot, no AC and warm water on the table to drink. Portions were small and crazy expensive. To top it all off, we're told at the end that's there's a mandatory 20% tip accompanied by a self-righteous note that all the employees share in the tip. Felt like a scam.

Flavors are an exotic and delicious blend

By SleeplessinSEA |

Joule is a jewel! We gathered as a foursome and split everything and ate everything from bone marrow to the goat cheese salad to start. The veggies are tastie, and some more unusual offerings that are prepared in more al dente or pickled style (parsnip, cauliflower, broccoli )with a Korean flair. The octopus with bacon was so tender, and flavorful with abundant "meat". We samples all four steaks offered which were unique, each with its own saucing-the pauvette most fork tender. Portions are smaller, so do not skimp, or over-share or you will be hungry! The décor is contemporary, lively and be sure to plan ahead to score a table!

Family Style Sharing

By Frances L |

All restaurants should consider serving meals in the manner of Joule...ordering one (or more each) entrée, side, and dessert served family style and shared. My husband and I like smaller portions and ordering one of each category and sharing them when served family style makes the whole experience so much more enjoyable. No more asking for a second plate or ordering too much and taking home the extra. AND the flavors were so good, meat tender and prepared perfectly, interesting sides, and yummy dessert. It was a delightful meal and a surprising way to be served. I recommend this restaurant wholeheartedly. I'd give it a 10!

Chef's table was great

By trijack |

We sat at the 'Chef's Table", i.e., at the bar by the prep area in front. Everything was DELICIOUS. The Cold smoked escolar was yummy and not to be missed. The octopus was very tender and, again, cooked perfectly. If you like mackerel (and we do), this was something special. We had the kalbi which was also excellent. Sadly, we were too full to try the spicy rice cake, so we will have that next time for sure. Nothing left the kitchen unless it was prepared to the satisfaction of Rachel, who keeps a watchful eye on every dish, while also helping on each station. A true gem for Seattle! Make reservations!

Nice find over Easter

By ladiablesseyvr |

Read about this place in Seattle magazine and lucked into an early reservation at 5:30pm on a Saturday! At our server's suggestion, we tried the beef tartare and were not disappointed. We also had the risotto and smoked tofu. Flavours were lavish, and we were full having also ordered the short rib. Everything delicious and well presented. A casual room with a pleasant vibe and attentive service. Only nonstarter was the shrub, a pretty looking drink that was much too tart (my daughter dubbed it "liquid ketchup chips").

Good food

By Paychi G |

Overall, all dishes are specially designed and very enjoyable. *Duck pastrami fried rice is very good! A bit like the Chinese sticky rice and have lots of flavor - Highly recommended. *Rib eye, Chinese celery, celeriac fries - my husband really liked it. It was cooked just right with red inside and grilled outside. Slightly oily though. *Octopus, bok choy, hot bacon vinaigrette - Bacon bits are amazing!! I also love the grilled bok choy & lemon. However, the taste of octopus is quite new to us. I can't tell if it is good or not. *Maitake, pine nut gremolata - taste good with great mixture of flavor and textures but oily.

1st time for brunch

Everything I tasted was delicious and unique. Had the revel breakfast and the bacon was terrific as promised. We will be back.

Great food and vibe

By Todd P |

We've been here a number of times and have had great meals each time. Restaurant has a cool vibe and accommodates a range of moods. We've taken friends, had nice dates here, and even popped in for a last minute meal after a day on a boat. Highly recommend the Spicy Rice Cakes. They're definitely a must have. The only item I remember us not being crazy over was the White Kimchi, which is a shame since we love Kimchi. All other items have been good.

Excellent brunch

By SoreA |

I had an excellent brunch here, and loved the format. The brunch is a set price, and for that, you order one a la cart dish off the menu and then there is a buffet-style spread of interesting sides, salads and baked goods. I opted for the shrimp and grits, which was one of the very bets versions of that dish I have had anywhere. The grits were super rich and creamy, and the shrimp was sauted with Chinese sausage, brown butter, garlic and ginger, and it was topped with a bit of mizuna. The sausage and ginger really gave it a nice, slightly different flavor profile. The buffet component was quite interesting as well - definitely not your standard brunch spread. There were mixed pickled vegetables, a great salad of peach, chili, lime and cilantro, artichoke crackers, pumpkin seed coffee cake, and an amazing fingerling potato salad with pickled onions, olives, cashew nuts. I sat at the bar and the bartender was very friendly, helpful with recommendations, both of what to order here, as well as other spots to check out while on my visit to Seattle. I just wish I had had time to come back for dinner as well.

Innovative and delicious

By sfgirl3 |

We sat at the chef counter and ordered the octopus, the kalbi steak, the cod, the black sesame lemongrass noodles, and Chinese broccoli. Everything was delicious and novel flavors that were bursting in every dish. We all enjoyed our dishes. Note the dishes were a little small and I suppose this is the small plates concept but I don’t think the prices are small plates prices at around 25 per entree dish. The best meal we’ve had in a while. Chef and waitstaff extremely nice and accommodating. Cute row of restaurants and wish we had time to try the passion fruit coconut curd next door or the wood fire bagel shop down the street.

amazing octopus, rice cakes with housemade chorizo simply superb

By mayrtuck |

My husband and I ordered just about everything on the menu! We loved them all and had glorious leftovers the next day. We ate the rice cakes for breakfast with soft fried eggs, amazing! The octopus was so tender. The waygu chuck eye was very tasty as well. Our dessert was so unique and I had to talk my husband into ordering it because of the blue cheese but he loved it! Service was attentive.

Amazing Flavors

By JasonCharlesBourne |

I went to Joule with a group of 6 people I was working with. This is a very cool restaurant in one of the many trendy neighborhoods of the Seattle area. Here's a rundown on the food, experience and ambiance: Food - The food is inventive, delicious and daring. I have seen labels like "asian" and "french" attached to this restaurant. However, I think they are inventive and take risks. Most of the plates were absolutely delicious. You must try the dish with the spicy rice cakes and chorizo sausage. Amazing! The vegetable dishes are amazing as well, and anything they prepare with mushrooms in it is really tasty. Experience They serve small plates that are meant to be shared. So, when you go with a group, you will have a lot of fun sharing lots of different items. The wait staff is really upbeat, and you can tell they enjoy working there and are proud of their product. Ambiance The restaurant has a beautiful design. The inside is warm, inviting and makes you want to stay there and really enjoy yourself. Overall, it was a great experience. I would definitely repeat it, but only with a group. This could be an interesting place for couples, but you get so much more out of going with a group.

Great food, service and ambiance.

By Rod J |

This is a great little restaurant with amazing food, service and ambiance. We were quickly greeted. Even though we were 45 minutes early, we were seated at a "community table" aka long table with chairs that you share with others. The table was long enough where we could spread out and not hear the other conversations. The food was awesome. We had a squash dish that was incredible. You would think squash, yuck, but it was very good. We also had the short ribs which were delicious and a pancake served with creme fresh, roe and a sort of jams. The drinks were also very good. I will be back again soon and would recommend this restaurant.

Consistently Outstanding

By Rumples |

We've dined here a few times yearly since the restaurant opened on Stone Way North, and each year I feel compelled to write a review. I've never had less than an excellent meal here. In fact, I often think the cuisine -- Korean fusion -- cannot improve, but it seems to get even better with each visit. It is easy to see why Joule tied for 9th in "Bon Apetit's" 2013 ranking of the hot 10 new restaurants in the United States. The focus here is on family-style dining, so we order several dishes to share with the friends who accompany us. Portions tend to be small, so one dish gives each of four diners about two samplings. Alas, the menu changes, so some of our favorites have disappeared. But they've been replaced by equally delicious offerings, all rich in flavor and expertly prepared. I especially like the exquisite smoked tofu salad and the tender, wonderfully seasoned wagyu bavette with truffled pine nuts and artichokes. All the desserts excel but I keep gravitating toward the Joule box -- pearl tapioca with ruby grapefruit and coconut. Joule -- a unit of energy -- is an appropriate name for this restaurant with a minimalist decor. Sit at the counter of the open kitchen and watch the cooks in action. Or relax at a table inside or on the patio and take in the lively scene. Upbeat servers rush to and fro but always with time to answer questions and to keep a close eye on table needs. I generally find Joule to be packed in the evenings and the noise level to be high. Limited parking exists behind the restaurant. But we've had no problem finding a place to park on side streets in the neighborhood. I highly recommend making a reservation to dine here.

A must go to restaurant in Seattle

By DonkArizona |

Our first try at this restaurant and it was fantastic. The service was great too. We ordered several different items on the menu and tried some things we've never tried before, all were delicious. The combination of food and spices went together very well. We will make this a stop every time we are in Seattle.

Astounding flavors

By 2Journeyfolks |

Wonderful, astounding flavors. Great service. Interesting clientele. This restaurant, along with its sister restaurant Revel, always astound us. Bold and unusual flavors and superior quality ingredients. The only thing I might complain about is lack of ice in the water offered. Small complaint indeed.

This would be 5 star if service has been better

By jgardner362 |

We had an 8:30pm reservation on a Thursday night. The restaurant was still quite busy when we arrived but thinned out very quickly. Our server took our drink order and then we didn't see her for quite a few minutes. When she returned, we put in our order. We ordered the Shrimp cocktail 2.0 and Heirloom Tomato salad to start and "that" Short Rib and Hanger steak as entrees. Our server explained that certain things took much longer to cook than others and asked if we minded if they just brought things out as they were done. We said it was okay to bring things out as they were ready. The heirloom tomato salad came out first as one would expect. Then there was a loooooooooooong wait. During this time, our server never came over to check on us or see if we wanted another drink. It seemed weird because by this time, they were no longer busy. The restaurant was mostly empty. The shrimp cocktail was brought over by a different person and then moments later the entrees were brought out by a different person. Again, our server did not come over and no one asked us if we needed anything or wanted to order another drink. By the time our server came over, it was well after 10pm and we were nearly done with dinner. We had jet lag and were tired so the wait to get our check seemed particularly painful On a bright side, since our server mostly seemed to have forgotten about us, our bill was pretty reasonable as we'd only been able to order one drink. The food was actually very good, but I don't think I'd go back.

VERY Spicy Food

By nznorm |

This place is next to The Whiale Wins, a very good restaurant I dined at a couple of years ago. So when I was back in Seattle, I decided to try Joule, which was very well-reviewed. My dining companion and I ordered a number of dished once the server decided to see if we wanted to order. We started with bone marrow, which was covered with kimchee that included slices of chilies. It was extremely spicy and masked the flavor of the marrow. Next was a dish of sauteed rice crackers and beef. Again, the level of spice was very high. We followed this with geoduck fried rice, which seemed to have flavor, but I could not really taste it because my mouth was on fire. Then I had a beef short rib with grilled kimchee in a spicy sauce. The beef was OK, not as tender as one generally likes in short ribs. The pieces I had were OK until I got tot he pieced in the sauce, which were inedible. My dining companion had a mackerel dish which was inedible due to the level of spice. I like spicy food. When it is done well, it sneaks up on you, causing your head to sweat. It is not unpleasant. The food at Joule is gratuitously spicy, unnecessarily spicy, and that made the meal unpleasant. Another thing to note is that no matter how many people are dining, they automatically add a 20% tip. I always tip 20% no matter how the meal was, but I like the choice to be mine.

Great flavors but inconsistent grilling

By Semibum |

Wonderful ambiance with in- and outside seating. The food was mixed. The appies were very good, especially the shrimp cocktail. As for the main dishes, the clams were excellent, the mackerel just average but the salmon was overdone and dry. The service was impeccable. Friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Our server gave a very good wine recommendation. Although it was quite busy with people waiting, we were never rushed. All in, we liked the fusion of flavors and will probably give it another try hoping that the chef becomes more consistent, especially with grilling fish. That would make them a 4+ in our view. The restaurant is a scant block from the waste transfer station but this was not noticeable from the restaurant at all.

One of our favorites in Seattle

We've been to Joule at least 3 times in its new location. Every time we're convinced it's one of the best around. The spicy rice cake is a must. The duck pastrami fried rice was amazing, but a little filling (considering everything else we ordered...)=fantastic lunch leftovers! The beef section of the menu is hard to beat. We've had the burger twice--once was ok, the second time was one of the best burgers we'd ever had. I love the braised octopus and the mackerel. Honestly, we should go with more people so we can order more things! The drink list is fun, and the atmosphere is clean and open. Plus, unlike Revel, they take reservations! And while it's not cheap, the portions are decent and the quality is excellent. So glad to have this just down the road.

Super Enticing Interesting Menu

All the selections are intriguing flavors and combinations, impressive creation and execution. This was my first visit to Joule with a ‘goody’ friend who has dined there several times and always had an excellent experience. I recommend for a tantelizing food experience. I was so mesmerized by each dish that I only took photos of the first (burrrata cheese w chile oil) and the last (vanilla layer cake with matcha frosting, apricot jam and pistachios)!

Great Date Night

By Traveling4Real |

A friend from work recommended Joule's so my wife and I decided to give it a shot on our regularly scheduled "date night". Upon walking into the place I knew I was going to love it. The open concept allows the guest to watch as food is prepared. We were seated at the cooking bar, which was what we prefer. 4-5 cooks were working like busy bees preparing delicious looking plates. Our waiter was quick to stop by after we settled in. He was very helpful answering questions and not the least bit pushy. We decided on the Beef Tartar & White Kimchee to start. It was fantastic!! For the main course we had the Octopus & Steak. Both were prepared perfectly! We can't wait to visit Joule's again!! Thank you for a fantastic first impression.

Super impressed with food & service

By Matthew C |

We had a party of 17 going there after Seahawks / Niners game and our host pre-ordered the menu. The delivery, taste and service were fantastic. My favorites were the appetizers and the grilled octopus. I have searched world wide for octopus dishes and this was one of the top 5% of my findings. Moist, tasting and not soggy. Definitely not too dry. Servers changed dishes quite often. Everything was super clever and tasty. If I could pray for one thing, i wish it had a private dining room large enough for our party, say 20 - 24 so we could have more privacy. That would be my suggestion. Next time?

A knock-out!

Read a great review in Bon Appetit of this spot and was excited to try it. My husband and I had the steak tartare to begin with, amazing. Followed by a persimmon salad ( ok, not great) then the spicy rice cake with chorizo which was stupendous. Then we had the maitake and the short ribs and they were also outstanding. Service was fantastic and atmosphere was excellent. A great choice in Seattle.

too much hype

By Paul B |

the food and menu was imaginative but the staff seems hell bent for you to order too much and often things that do not compliment it. With the terrace open and the window open the resto is far to hot on a warm evening with no cool area to chill out and dine. The menu is very imaginative with a bunch of really fine plates,

Reputation well deserved

This place has become a 'must try' for locals and visitors alike. Developed in conjunction with The Whale Wins reservations are necessary for anytime before 9:00. The menu changes frequently, but their knowledge staff fills in the details. Service is very nice without being overbearing. Like other popular places in town, an automatic gratuity of 20% is included and they actually earn and deserve it! Four people, drinks and dessert came to $265.

Delicious

We ordered the kalbi and octopus, both were really good. The dan dan noodles were a pass for me. I wanted to like this place but it was lacking flavour, presentation etc.
