Top Rated Chinese food, a Seattle Secret

By seattle_knitter |

I was shocked to find that Judy Fu's, a favorite of many Seattlites, had not yet been reviewed. This restaurant has been around for years and frequently wins awards for their exceptional Chinese food. Their signature sauces are bottled and sold in local grocery stores (see U Village QFC). The staff are always friendly, despite the typically busy atmosphere. The food is fresh, tasty and expertly prepared. Portions are large, and staff more than willing to package leftovers. A great experience for eat-in, take out, lunch or dinner.

quick and delicious but sort of expensive

By Paprika_Six |

I frequent Judy Fu's because I live nearby...and it is very good. I especially love the mu shu pork. My boyfriend and I really love being able to order our food for pickup, or even delivery since we live close enough, and we're always happy with the quality of the food and the service, but it is not cheap. I almost always feel like I end up spending more money than seems right for what I order due to the high prices.

Always great food

By mcadamialover |

We have eaten so many meals at Snappy Dragon and ordered meals delivered.....always great customer service and good food!~!

Reliable Chinese

By kristopherowens |

My friends and I went here because Konas was closed. If you've ever been to a Chinese place, it's probably just line that. The dishes were good and well priced considering the amount of food you get. We took a Bunch home with us. Would go back if in the area, but probably wouldn't go out of the way.

Home made chow mein

By opium05 |

I have been here several times and love it. The food is generously portioned, designed to share. Great place for family dinner. The best thing on the menu is the chow mein with home made and hand cut noodles, very much worth the extra $2.50.

Ok but ....

By Panda37 |

Went there for lunch with the family. Located not too far from the UW campus. Overall, well...average. We eat at a lot of Chinese restaurants so wasn't expecting anything outstanding but the reviews indicated this was truly special. The vegetable lacked good flavor. true, nice and crispy but just nothing special. The restaurant is renowned for its dumplings and they were ok...but that's it...ok. It's a nice place and probably a good place to go to escape the hustle and bustle of the UW campus. However, i think the reputation outshines the actual food.

Your mouth will love you for it! :-)

By EdgeAir |

Hand made dumplings and noodles support the already delicious offerings. Judy Fu's is my favorite from the many I have tried coast to coast and in between!

good but now enough veggies!

By tinec577 |

We had a good meal, however, there were not enough veggies in the chow mien. The pot stickers and sweet and sour port were good. there were also plenty of sauces served with the meal.

Delicious Asian Cuisine

By WA-Damore |

I had lunch at the Snappy Dragon yesterday for the first time and can't recommend it highly enough. The food was delicious, especially the dumplings and home made noodles. I was with a girlfriend and my 20-month old granddaughter and the staff, including the owner husband, were awesome, over the top accommodating to us. It has such a nice ambiance and is a great restaurant for a family with children but also cozy enough for a romantic dinner.

Sensational homemade Chinese noodles

By travelingrm |

We are visiting Seattle and coming back from a great day at Deception Pass. One of our family members recommended the Snappy Dragon...The noodles and the dumplings were being made as we ordered. We also shared moo shoo with great homemade pancakes. Large portions with leftovers. there could be a wait but we arrived at 5 on Saturday night and were served immediately.

Time to try this place

By Nancy D |

I was hungry for Chinese and Snappy Dragon isn't far away. Although it's been around for years, I had never tried it. I went for an early lunch and the service was friendly and fast. I had a lunch special and an appetizer, so there were leftovers to bring home for another meal. I will definitely go back again, or order delivery, which is a good bit of their business.

Best Chinese food north of Chinatown

By Brian W |

Its tough to find good Chinese food outside of Chinatown and Snappy Dragon is one of the best. Lines can get pretty long and delivery even longer on some nights so plan ahead but always a good meal. They also make a good homemade noodle if interested and I would encourage you to try that out.

Great Food with okay service

By James H |

I love to eat here as the food is amazing. The service is the hardest part as it's either hot or cold.

Chinese comfort food

By AddictedToAdventure |

On a rainy day, nothing beats good comfort food that leaves you on the couch binge-watching GOT and Judy Fu comes through! With homemade chow-ein noodles, Judy doesn't just douse the meat in a sauce and send it out the door- she cooks in the sauce, allowing the flavors to seep through each piece of meat, vegetable, and noodle. If you like to dip, they'll even provide you extra sauce. Overall, a good go-to!

Yummy

By FredTracie |

Wow surprised the food was very good and fresh. Service a bit slow but the restaurant was busy. They let you take the time to enjoy the night and not rush you. Thanks for the experience.

A mea'l so good do not miss Judy Fu's

By Launa H |

If you can make reservations. The wait isn't that long. They get you in and out while still enjoying your meal. What is fun if your lucky you will see the two owners in the corner making dumplings. Food is fresh and hot. Restaurant is clean and staff is so very friendly to insure your meal is pleasant. Stop and Enjoy!

Good food, lovely atmosphere

By Paula L |

Some of the better Chinese food that we have had in awhile. The house marinade/dipping sauce and hot oil was very good. House made egg noodles, wontons and much more. Busy place but never felt crowded or rushed. The fried rice had a light jasmine flavor, very nice.

Best Authentic Chinese West of NYC

By steve s |

Trying to find some good Chinese food while visiting Seattle and after reading all the reviews we decided on the Snappy Dragon. Well we weren't disappointed! The food was absolutely delicious, so much flavor and perfect amount of spice in everything. We started out with a couple apps...we got the Potstickers (pan browned pork) with typical dumpling sauce, they were phenomenal, homemade and delightful. For our next app we got the pork filled soft wontons with their homemade spicy peanut sauce. These were out of this world, I wanted to drink the peanut sauce when we were done. For the main courses we had the Mongolian Beef, Mongolian Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken and Almond Chicken with Bamboo Shoot and Green Peppers. Of all the dishes the Mongolian dishes were by far the tastiest, however it was all very very excellent! I was sad we didn't get to try any of their noodle dishes because they are all handmade and looked delicious! You will see I only gave 3 stars for the service. It was a friday night that we were there at 6 and the place was packed, we did have reservations though and were immediately seated. It did take 15 min. for the server to stop over for our drink order so we were all set to order by that time. After that we didn't see much of him again until our food came. Fortunately for him the food speaks for itself. So overall the service was weak. One thing to note, the portions are huge and 1 main course can easily feed 2....but then again who doesn't like having leftover Chinese! All in all, I can't wait to go back next time we are visiting Seattle!,....next time will probably get take out though unstead of dining in.

Love the food at this place, eat there when I am in town

By rls8008 |

I love the dumplings and noodles at this place, big hit with my kids too. I'm not sure if its totally gourmet or authentic, as it is very different than other Chinese places, but I think its awesome and make a special trip to eat there if I am in town.

Judy Fu's never fails!

By ellenblackstone |

~Y~e~a~r~s~ ago, long-time restaurant critic, John Hinterberger, introduced a lot of us to Judy Fu. Then, I believe she was at the Black Pearl in Wedgwood. She has since -- long since! -- started her own restaurant in nearby Maple Leaf, Judy Fu's Snappy Dragon. Dine in or take out, you just can't beat it. Start with the hot and sour soup. (Trust me: it's not the dishpan broth you'll get in some restaurants.) And always, always, order the green onion pancake. Unbelievable. My fave is plain old Kung Pao Chicken, and it's loaded with chicken - not padded with onions, as you'll find in a lot of places. Mongolian Beef is good. Salt-and-pepper anything. And home-made noodles. If you're lucky, Judy will be there to say *hello*, as gracious as ever. No need to go to the ID for a great Chinese meal!

Great lunch specials

By Clarissa B |

My daughter and I had lunch here yesterday. She opted for the lunch special - 1 choice of the following: type of rice, appetizer, soup, then entrée. For the price of all items ($7.95), it was an awesome deal. Plus the food was great. I opted for just an entrée - beef noodle soup. It could have fed 3 people for $11.95. Excellent! Will definitely return...

Great Chinese in Mapleleaf

By david n |

This unassuming place is home to some really great chinese food. I ordered the szechwan chicken and soup. The chicken was among the best meals I've had. The chicken was moist, the sauce flavorful and veggies cooked with with still a hint of crispness. I'll be back for sure. The only downside is that parking can be scarce.

Eaten here for decades - won't go back

By Robert G |

We have eaten here many times over the years and enjoyed the food. Birthdays, company groups, family dinners, couples, and solo - never disappointed. Last night was very very different. We ordered $200 worth of takeout, and none of it was good. It wasn't just mediocre - it was awful! I never write reviews but I consider this a public duty - both for the restaurant and their customers. If a business that was SO good becomes this bad after this long - they will not last much longer I'm afraid. Once you start losing customers that you had for decades, you are in serious trouble. This was not just an off night. Fixing it will require a complete revamping of the kitchen from the top down.

Wonderful smells, average flavor

By J9Koffel |

Gave this place a try twice and found it just average. I was hopeful because the food smelled great from the parking lot. Unfortunately, the fried pot stickers were thick and very chewy, the chicken with garlic sauce and vegetables was bland and fairly tasteless. The saving grace was the hot and sour soup. Spicy and robust in flavor. Pretty good service. Reasonably priced. Seems like a popular place as the carry out orders were going out the door fast and furious. Not interested in going back. Good for families and couples. They have a lunch menu so may be good for business meals, as well.

Not what it used to be

By Tonasket98 |

I have many fond memories of this place in years past. The food this time was really salty and in hindsight I should have sent it back. I hope this was just a bad day for the kitchen. I will still give them a second chance though. That's how much I love Judy Fu!

Food no longer outweighs the filth and horrible service

By James H |

The food has been good at this place, however the horrible service, dirty restaurant and filthy dishes don't compensate for the food. The sanitary conditions at this restaurant are horrible, dirty plates, cups, tea kettles, tables, chairs, floor are horrible! I swear I have had the same cranky waitress the last 3 visits that has the personality of a snail! (sorry to pick on the snail). It's such a shame to have such great food be over taken by such horrible sanitary conditions........

Come for the hand made noodles

By darkswede218 |

The hand made noodles (soup or fried) and dumplings are why Mrs Fu has been in the Seattle resturant scene since I was a snot nosed kid in the 60's. The traditional chinese noodles are always perfectly made and of the right consistency (el dente). They are chewier and more robust than some prefer. THe same for the pork dumplings. The solid meat filling makes for a firm bite. Without any spinach or other veggie mixed in, these dumplings or "pot stickers" are considered too firm by some. The sesame beef flavor is good but the sauce is to heavy and thick. It could use 1/2 the sauce and oil. If you order this, ask the chef for 1/2 the oil and sauce. The smoked duck flavor was exquisite and caused flashbacks to some of the best resturants in Beijing. THe only shortcoming is that it was salt brined much too long for Western tastes. If you nibble the duck and scarf down the rice & noodles then fine. But most Americans, like myself, take big bites of meat and the salt is overpowering. The best item is the beef noodle soup. A huge bowl that will fill 2-3 adults, it's stuffed with marbled beef, baby bok choy and hearty spicy beef broth. The food is a solid 4 stars. The service was excellent. THe atmosphere is cozy and clean.

Disappointed!

By Msv419 |

I was in the area last Monday, decided to stop in for an old favorite, the Combo Fried Rice. Unfortunately, I live in Bothell and I did not eat until I got home. A few bites was enough. It tasted like someone put vinegar in my food. When I went in to pick up my order, I was not happy with how it looked and smelled. I took a pic for the friend who told me amount this place years ago and sent it to him as I was leaving the driveway with my vinegar rice dish. At that moment I was clearly bragging. Now I feel it was absolutely nothing to brag about!

Amazing!

The food here is wonderful. From the hand made dumplings to the fresh in-house made chow mein noodles I've never had better. Get there early to avoid a wait.

Finally, some Wonton Soup to Celebrate

By Stephen S |

We were looking for some "American" Chinese food in Seattle and Snappy Dragon was perfect. The wonton soup was outstanding and the highlight of my dinner. Everyone enjoyed their meal and we had plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day.

The best!!

By kathierose99 |

Absolutely delicious! The staff and servers were excellent and helpful regarding amount of food to order. The green beans were to die for...

Best take out ever

By Daniel E |

Got take out and it was delicious. Huge variety of items. Big portions. Fast service and very friendly. No wonder they were voted Seattle’s best fir 8 years in a row

Still crazy, after all these years

By greatcats |

Judy and family have been cooking here for about two decades and it’s still good. Try the wontons in spicy peanut sauce. Order a dash of her famous sauce with it. Love the sizzling rice soup. Lunch is a great value!

Best Chinese Food We've Had in Ages!!

By SnarlaMom |

Visiting from Phoenix were there is a dearth of good Chinese food, we were hoping to find something better during a trip to Seattle. Our nephew (a UW alum) took us here and it was awesome! Don't miss the amazing home-made dumplings or the hand-rolled noodles in the chicken lo-mein. I loved the sesame beef - tangy red sauce, and my husband raved about the king-pao shrimp, although it was too spicy for my wimpy palate.Everything we had here was delicious. Even our picky teenaged son raved about the dumplings and noodles! They also sell sauce to go to use at home for stir fry, etc., something I've never seen before. If you have time, visit the Math and Stuff store across the street - all kinds of fun games, puzzles, etc. for kids.

Homemade noodles not to be missed

By Alex G |

Great place for lunch or dinner. The homemade noodles are a must try. Friendly owners and a separate vegetarian menu for those who need to eat veggie.

Okay but not the best

By Kinda Invisible |

This is one of those places that must have a good neighborhood following in order to keep winning "Best" awards because we didn't quite understand how that continues to happen. Certain items were wonderful, like the wonton soup (yes, the best I've ever eaten) and the fried rice. Everything else was either just okay (sweet and sour chicken) or disappointing (almond chicken stir-fry). Service is fine but nothing stands out as phenomenal. We decided that if we were hungry and in the neighborhood we might stop in again and try something else on the menu but we won't make a special trip like we did this time.

Too Americanized For Us

By Toni S |

This place is good but very Americanized for our liking. The Ants Climbing A Tree was so good and the Spicy Tofu. Their logo is cute and we had fo get a couple of t-shirts. If you like Americanized chinese food then this is the place to go with their hand made rolled noodles.

Excellent Chinese food!

By patbnnp |

Finding Snappy Dragon was a nice surprise. We are new to Seattle, and searching for good Chinese food. The food is excellent, the staff are friendly, and the prices are reasonable. We will be returning often.

Neighborhood Gem!

By Shel S |

Tucked in the Maple Leaf area of Seattle, this little gem is worth a drive to if you don't live in the area and are in the mood for some delicious food! Carnivores and vegetarians both will be delighted here - Snappy Dragon does a fantastic job hitting a home run across the board with a bevy of choices and creative dishes. My fave? Curry Chow Fun and Dragon Delight! You can't go wrong here.

Fantastic and an old reliable!

By alliek99 |

We used to live in Seattle and frequented Snappy Dragon. It was delicious then, and it is delicious now! My husband loves the sesame beef, and there is nowhere that makes it anywhere near as good, especially in Atlanta. We were with friends, and ordered a variety of dishes (chicken friend rice, Judy's hand cut noodles, etc). David (Judy's son) comes out and is social with the customers. Love this place and can't wait to go back.

Outstanding menu, outstanding food!

By gajanshe |

It was very close to closing time, most restaurants would say sorry but not Snappy Dragon. We started out with the cocktail specials then on to Pot Stickers, which were wonderful. My Mu Shu was large and so tasty and the Sea Food Clay Pot was just out of this world. The prices were very reasonable and the portions although I thought a little on the large side most would say just right!!! What a find in the middle of the suburbs!! One of the best restaurants for Chinese food.

Congenial hosts, generous portions, delicious food, and great value!

By Robbinsesq |

We're in Seattle for a family visit. Our son and daughter-in-law took us out last night to one of their favorite places. The Snappy Dragon is small and rather non-description from the outside, but the owner/chef turns out delicious meals. When you go there be sure to include the "crispy eggplant in tangy hot glaze" in your order. Also the homemade pot-stickers are not to be missed! If we lived here we'd eat there every week!

Have out-of-town guests? Bring them here!

By TravelingFan22 |

If people are just visiting Seattle, they won't accidentally run into this place. We don't live in Seattle but often make it a point to stop by when in town. This is a long-time restaurant in a North Seattle neighborhood house. It's not large, the waiting room is small, and there's only street parking. Despite all that, this family-run business is almost always busy. If you go before 5 pm, you can usually be seated right away. It's lively, so it's a perfect place to go with friends or family. Great food and service. We love the tomato beef, potstickers and sweet & sour chicken, but there are many more options as well. Once you try it, you'll definitely want to come back!

This is really good Chinese but the wait is horrendous due to the popularity of the place.

Awsome

By Anne H |

The dumplings are amazing. Took frozen ones for later. The home made noodles are amazing. Every thing we tried was delicious.

Decent family place

By volcanolover |

tasty, not gourmet food, and particularly popular Jiaozi.

Great food -- but slow.

By John L |

This comment has 2 parts -- 1) the food is great! Some of the best Asian food we've ever had. 2) we ordered carry out and was told to pick up in 1 hour. Arrived spot on 1 hour and then had to wait another 30 minutes for the food. Too slow !

Good, for Chinese food

By TerraMM |

I like Judy Fu's but we are vegetarian and there are very few meat-free dishes with any flavor. The tofu dishes are too soft and slippery, and the noodles are so-so. The curry chow fun is good but if we go there it's all we ever get. My meat eater friends like this place.

It’s Gone Way Downhill

By Jeff E |

Snappy Dragon has been my go to restaurant whenever I have visited Seattle over the past 30 years. My latest visit has been a complete disappointment. I’ve always ordered their Sesame Chicken and also the Generals Chicken, and it’s been the best. This time around it’s just awful. Spongy and way over breaded it doesn’t even come close to what it used to be. The breading seems to soak up and completely neutralize all favors of the sauce resulting in a bland and flavorless dish with a mealy and completely gross texture. What happened Snappy Dragon??? It’s just so sad.

Snappy Dragon delivery... a ‘Shelter-in-Place’ wonder

By Joe S |

Celebrated last day of March with a delivery from Snappy Dragon. Ordered Hot & Sour Soup, Veggie Fried Rice and a never-before-tried dish: Sliced Crispy Cod in Szechuan sauce.... it was delicious. $33 for 2 entrees and snapped soup. And there was enough left over for leftovers.

Oh so yummmmmmy!

By NurseMD |

Everything was fantastic. The service was excellent; friendly and fast. We ordered several dishes and they all were great. The curry noodles and sesame chicken were especially good. The atmosphere was very relaxed and comfortable. We will definitely be back!!

YUM Finally good food

By Baker0911 |

Since Louie's Closed down, my family have been searching for a good place and this did not disappoint. We tried almost everything on two separate occasions. the Fried Rice is just out of this world perfect. Both nights it was packed but the service was excellent. For the adults might I recommend the Pikachu punch, yum yum yum. I did rate it low for special occasions, only because it is kind of a smaller place… not sure what size of a party it would accommodate other than say 10..

Best Szechuan in town! Praise the Jiao-zi

By PDPautz |

Judy Fu's Snappy Dragon on Roosevelt Avenue in North Seattle offers the best Szechuan I've had anywhere, including New York and San Francisco. Her handmade jiao-zi (pork or vegetable dumplings), often made while you watch, are tender, flavorful, and filling. The General's Tso's Chicken is lean, crispy and covered with a sauce that will make you cry for its simplistic beauty. Likewise, the Fen-si noodles in their "Ants Climb a Tree" are delicate and delicious in peppery Szechuan sauce and spicy minced pork. Lunch combinations are extremely reasonable and include a choice of three kinds of rice, wonton or hot/sour soup, and a spring roll or bbq pork. David, the family manager, is extremely friendly, attententive, and efficient, and a true pleasure to get to know. While there are several very good chinese restaurants in Seattle's International District, if the food is your focus, you've got to visit the Snappy Dragon. They also sell several of their homemade sauces and provide excellent take-out and delivery between NE 45th and NE 125th Streets, bracketed by Aurora Avenue N and Sand Point Way NE.

Used to be our favorite

By bryncannon |

I’ve been here many times over the years with family and friends. Two women friends in particular have met me for lunch here many times, because they have a great lunch menu. Today, unfortunately, was a bit of a disappointment. I always order the almond cranberry chicken, white rice, and barbecue pork. Today it came with fried rice, which I said I’d eat anyway. Then I noticed the egg roll instead of the pork, so I went out to find someone to get that changed. And then I waited 5 minutes while my friends’ food got colder. Finally I got a big bowl of white rice, no pork. And it wasn’t possible to eat it since there wasn’t room in my plate because of the huge pile of fried rice. I waited 5 more minutes for the pork, brought by our server, who told me she had checked what she wrote down and it said fried rice and egg roll. Well, that may be, but it isn’t what I ordered and it isn’t helpful to imply that I got what I ordered. After all this, we got one check (most places these days ask if we want separate checks) and I was surprised to see that nothing had been taken off the bill for the mix-up, not even 10%. What I expected was for our server to apologize, remove my plate right away and bring back the correct order. And it wasn’t even very busy at the time. I think there were 3 tables occupied. Finally, the food was bland, mine and my friends’. I don’t know what was different, but we all noticed it.

Great Dumplings!

By hfulghum |

A very fine local eatery with great hand-made/home-made dumplings. Very tasty, reasonably priced, and a good atmosphere.

Misrated!

By Kellie H |

Terrible chow mein...lots of noodles, but nothing else. Out of four entrees, the only one edible was the Mu Shu Pork (excellent).

Homemade noodles and dumplings? YES!

By Steveage |

OK, it must be because there are so many restaurants in Seattle, but Judy Fu's Snappy Dragon restaurant is NOT the 400th best restaurant in Seattle. That's the current ranking. This place is easy to drive to and park, feels more like suburbia. I was worried because the lower ranking, don't be, go here. First of all, we go in the restaurant and get seated next to what looked like it could be a bar. I guess it was Judy Fu herself, and four other ladies and guys hand rolling, hand cutting dumplings and noodles. They are pros... like they were quiet and intense, and fast, rolling out dough scooping generous portions of protein and spices and rolling the dumplings right there in front of us. I can't believe a restaurant would do / could do this! The food came... here's a tip, one dish can feed three people. Not only was the food plentiful, it was authentic, delicious, homemade, Chinese food. Where I live, all the Chinese food restaurants serve the same fried/breaded crap. Not here in Seattle - This was amazing, stir fried veggies, homemade noodles, the scallops and shrimp were incredible. The service was fine, the waiters were regular white kids, the cooks were the real deal - Chinese people making amazing Chinese food. This place has a cozy, anybody would feel at home here. Great restaurant, great price.

Very Good Dinner

By loverainsky |

We went with friends for our first time. Service was good. Food was very good, including the mu shoo pancakes, a shrimp dish and more... It was fairly busy. We plan to go back and try it again.

a lot of soul in this restaurant and great noodles

By Pepper |

we had a lovely birthday dinner here- my step daughter will go no place else for her birthday. The owner is an extremely nice and talented person and greets Nina as family. We had big plates ( you will never go hungry here) and I particularly liked the noodles- obviously home made with just enough black bean sauce. There is a nice touch to all the dishes- nothing was over cooked. You can order your spice and expect to get it at the required hotness. The fried eggplant was delicious- but one of those could make your whole meal. I don't like Tofu- but the people who did at the table pronounced it very good. The dumplings were excellent- all in all, one of the best Chinese restaurants in the city.

Small but totally awesome

By Michael G |

Judy Fu's is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Seattle. When they first opened you could actually see Judy making homemade noodles. The food is excellent and they have a great take out and or delivery. Very worthwhile give them a try.

So goooooood

By lkrlam |

If I had a choice I would be eating Judy's food every meal before I die, but for now my wife gets to feed me too. The best Chinese food in Seattle. Great staff and owner and family.

Outstanding!!!

By RedSoxRule27 |

I would weigh 400lbs if this place was in CT!! Mongolian beef with rice noodles were delicious. Those pot sticker things with a fancy name are incredible. First time I've ever had eggplant because I hate the stuff but Judy can even make THAT taste good!!! Local neighborhood. This place should be rated wayyyyyyyyyy higher on tripadvisor. Wayyyyyy higher!!!

A Little Gem

By Pat M |

Snappy Dragon is a little gem. There are so many great dishes to choose from. Be sure to order a noodle dish - they are homemade and wonderful. Prices are moderate and portions are large, so if you go in a group there will be lots of things to share. Vegetarians and carnivores will all find something to savor here. Service is great and the tables have a "Lazy Susan" in the middle that makes sharing dishes easy and fun.

Panda Express but more expensive

By ISwimalot |

Sorry but all these 3+ star reviews are obviously from people who haven't experienced really good Chinese food. The food is maybe a slight cut above what you would find at a Panda Express cook line....chow mein noodles are really doughy and over-sauced....dumplings resemble those found in the Costco freezer section and I would say of the 15 dishes we've tried on three separate occasions, the only thing close to average were the green beans. Living in the neighborhood I really wanted to like Judy Fu's and gave it 3 separate tries with different people, but all agreed, the food was below average and really not worth the wait or expense. Never again.

Cozy place with excellent food

By ValeMagg |

We went without reservation on a Friday night. Just had to wait 15 minutes until we got seated. The personnel at the reception as well as the waiters very very friendly and helpful. Tasty food and relaxed atmosphere. I particularly liked the interior which was not tacky at all. Will be visitin again!

Great Chinese

By Sequim88 |

Our son took us out to eat at this greatt little Chinese place. The food was wonderful. Started with perfect dumplings and then selected four entrees. I had the Kung Pao chicken at 4-star spicey and it was perfect. Even with four adults and two kids there was a lot of leftovers to take home - unfortunately one of the boxes broke open and drenched all the other items in sauce on the way home. Although the place is small they easily accomdated my wife's wheelchair as well as booster seat and highchair for the kids. Service was fast and very friendly. I wish we had a place like this near where we live.

Always the best!

By NW748 |

Judy Fu's is always the best! We love stopping here to eat whenever we are in the area! It never disappoints! The dumplings are homemade and sooooooo delicious! I could eat a meal of just dumplings! But of course everything else is so good you have to order more! For dinner everything is more family style...we ordered the bowl of hot and sour, an order of Kung pao chicken and Mongolian beef. Everything tastes very fresh and seasoned perfectly. There is always a long line and the restaurant is small so be sure to get there early.

Wonderful!

By Margi6999 |

I've had lunch here 3 times. The food is excellent. The portions are very generous. The servers are top notch. The prices are right. Do yourself a favor, order the hand cut noodles. They are a buck or two more, and worth every penny.

Liked it!

By Ruth S |

Enjoyed lunch here for a special celebration! Really enjoyed the potstickers and dumplings. Had the lunch combination..a lot of food. Great prices! Good service too!

15 years of excellence

By GaryMcK50 |

We have had the great joy of visiting Snappy Dragon for over 15 years. Happily, the food and service are the same...wonderful. Try the BBQ pork, not you're every day small pieces actual 2-3 ounces of meat. The beef and snow peas are quite tasty. The sweet and sour chicken scrumptious. Service is always top drawer.

Great food, great service and they did make it snappy!

By Bridstow |

We have been to the Snappy Dragon during other visits to Seattle from the UK over a number of years. We love this restaurant for its relaxed atmosphere, consistently good service and food. It offers Mandarin and Szechuan style Chinese food with classic, vegetarian and gluten free options. The restaurant also offers a takeaway and delivery service for those who prefer it. It’s a great place to go as a couple or as we usually do a family group. If dining in we recommend making a reservation as the place gets very busy.

My favorite delivery

By MONichols |

Snappy Dragon is the best Chinese takeout in the north end. They have speedy delivery, and it's my go-to for people dropping by unexpectedly. Their Happy Family is to die for! Sechuan and Hunan favorites available too.

The first time I went, I was pretty excited-- lots of veggie options, great servers, and the food was pretty good. The second time, I was disappointed-- the dumplings seemed doughy and the sauces gloppy. Bummer.

A family favorite

By John F |

When we lived closer to Judy Fu's, we were there almost weekly either eating in or for take-away. We love the pork jiao-zi and still go frequently just to get it! The dipping sauce is exceptional. The Lover's eggplant is also excellent with just the right combination of creamy inside a crunchy exterior. You'll want to order it with a little spice, as the sweetness will take over without some heat. And always order the handmade noodles! Salt and pepper squid are big with my kids as is the sizzling rice soup, but as with the Lover's Eggplant, better to eat in than as takeaway. Something is lost in transportation. The place can get busy on weekends for either takeaway or eating in, so try a weeknight if you want to get in and out (or have hungry kids!) Otherwise, enjoy the smells while you wait and know that it will be worth it!

Best Chinese we've found in Seattle

By Spencer D |

We haven't actually eaten in this restaurant, but have taken out from there many times. It is the best Chinese food we have found in Seattle. They have a extensive menu and almost everything we have tried has been quite good. Last week we had the Kung Pao chicken, shrimp fried rice, soup and spring rolls, it was all very good. Reasonably priced for Seattle.

Snappy Dragon-title says it All!

By The_Illuminati |

I've probably been in and out of at least 50 Chinese Restaurants, from dim-sum hole in the walls to PF Changs overwrought and overdone cuisine. The Snappy Dragon is the first I've seen with home-made noodles and dumplings. The Dumplings were dim-sum worthy and the aspargus and veggies in all the dishes were perfectly cooked, spicy, and firm. You don't have to be vegeterian to appreciate good greens. I asked where the name comes from and the owner told me it was named for thw snapdragons in the garden. The waiters were a little unfocused and we missed getting tea refills, but these are nit-picking sort of things. The food was great, the atmosphere lively and cosy, and the the prices reasonable. If you go there you won't be disappointed.

Snappy is Delicious

By Gwyn M |

We go to Snappy Dragon frequently. The food is consistently yummy (my kids especially love the won ton soup) and the owners are so darn nice that it makes us feel great about spending our time and money there. We especially like the chicken with veggies and black beans and the homemade noodle chow mein. The lunch special is a great deal (til 4pm daily) but make sure you get there a little early at dinner on the week ends or plan to wait--it gets really busy!

Best everrrrrrr

Best everrrrrr Chinese Food!! I cannot be satisfied anywhere else, unfortunately Judy Fu's Snappy Dragon has set the bar too high! I cannot explain how great it is! I order a bunch of food to go to take to a friends house. Chow mein (you have to order noodles here they are famous) pot stickers (they are huge so don't be disappointed by how many are in each order), fried rice, almond chicken, Mongolian beef, and I cannot say which is my favorite! So good! Also, my absolute favorite is their hot and sour soup! I get it every time. It's fresh, it's tangy and spicy! So good Can't wait to be back!

DUMPLINGS

By Kris S |

I only order the dumplings here because that's what my girlfriend says they're most famous for. I find them addictive. I don't especially like the atmosphere of eating in, especially not on a cold night. But a big order of dumplings to take home for a movie is a great idea.

Good and Bad, but best choice in Maple Leaf

By mambokings |

I have been here many many times - I can't say it is great overtime and the same for whether its not good every time. Somedays the hot and sour soup is fantastic - other days it is bland and uninspiring. Same goes for their other dishes - probably because they get very busy on weekends so have less time for quality control. Not sure about this Chinese restaurant phenomenon where you get charged for rice - would you want to just eat the broccoli by itself? or how about going to an italian restaurant and eating sauce by itself and being also charged extra for the pasta - come on seattle folks - wake up - when are you going to speak up and ask that either you raise the price so the rice is included or include the rice in the first place - what a joke these guys are becoming by nickel and dining you. However back to the food - the dumplings I agree have become too starch and lumpy, but the green beans dish is the one dish they always excel at - probably due to the black bean sauce they use which has all the flavors in it. The service is definitely not 5 star here - but its a neighborhood place so one shouldn't expect white linen on the table and nor should you expect 5 stars, and whats with the 18% cover charge for a larger table - that is a joke. I really wonder who really runs this place. Look the food is good enough to go there again and again - and if you live in the neighborhood there is no other better Chinese restaurant around. So even though I have issues about paying for rice and other things, it is still a better Chinese restaurant than the alternatives - but they got to stop charging for the rice - this is just ridiculous.

Great food with gluten free choices!

By Mary LIz C |

The specialty homemade noodles cannot be eaten by the gluten intolerant (much to the disappointment of my husband) but there are many other delicious choices, making this one of our first choice restaurants for dinner. The portions are not skimpy, so we end up with enough for one or two more dinners at home.

Friendly and good basic Chinese food

By Patti W |

The restaurant was almost full on a Saturday lunch hour. We knew it must be good. It was, ample portions, great price, friendly service and attractively served. I'm avoiding carbs, but was able to omit the rice selections and get extra BBQ pork on the lunch special which also includes soup. The vegetables were good quality and cooked just right. There is off street parking, however it is limited. We found street parking about 2 blocks away.

KIds Favorite

By rookie669 |

Our young adult daughters were in town for the weekend and both asked to make sure we had dinner at the Snappy Dragon. We actually ordered (over ordered) our usual dinner which consisted of the special chow mein noodles with chicken, the crispy sesame beef, moo shoo pork with extra pancakes and the sautéed garlic string beans. We feasted on the all the dishes and there was plenty left for a few more meals. Our daughters returned to their respective cities pleased and happy that they were able to experience Snappy Dragon again.

Ersatz Chinese Food

By Phil S |

Title says it all. Unimaginative offerings, clunky sauces, gummy pot stickers. The speciality of the house, what supposedly built the restaurant's reputation, are the hand-made noodles. If you want your dish prepared with them instead of with "pre-fab" noodles - and who wouldn't? - they charge you extra! Why on earth would you not prepare every dish with the best you have to offer? The young daughter of my dinner companions ate using blue plastic chops sticks which I assumed were given free to kids. Turns out they charge $3.50 for them, made in China at a cost I would guess of 10 cents a pair. Shameless nickel and dime-ing. And the food is expensive.

So worth it

By Lani R |

With family in town from Europe, a trip to Snappy Dragon was a priority. Unfortunately we had to make reservations on Saturday night, and had a baby in the group. Traffic caused us to be 12 minutes late and I was unable to get through by phone to alert them until the 7th call. (Consequently we had to wait to be seated.) The restaurant is small, has virtually no parking, and is laid out awkwardly. (A separate window for pick-up orders would be a big help, as would expansion or a move). BUT - it is SO worth the visit. The food is amazing. On-site fresh potstickers, hand-made noodles. Loads of vegetarian options. Dishes with chicken use tender, moist, skinless chicken. Servings are generous. My family's favorite guilty pleasure is the Crispy Eggplant - thick wedges of dredged, fried eggplant covered in a thick sweet/piquant glaze. Reservations taken for parties of 5+, and they do provide a delivery service. Enjoy!

Excellent Chinese!

By Kristin J |

Good Find! At 4:45 on a Sunday there were 6 tables full. By the time we left at 6:10, it was packed! Very Large family style portions. Fantastic for large groups....pricy for 2 wanting 3-4 dishes. They have combinations at lunch, but not at dinner. Food Very Good! Service Great! Clean

Really good food and service

By FHPO |

We chose Snappy Dragon based on the reviews. As former Seattle-ite, the local references were especially helpful. As nomads we are frequently disappointed when we dine out, but not this time. Green beans with almonds and garlic sauce were tender, fresh; chicken breast with mushrooms and snow peas was sooo good. Friendly, attentive service without going overboard; clean with good lighting; they have gluten-free options. One minor thing: it was a cold night, formica table tops not covered, so dishes grew cold faster than I would have liked. Maybe wood trivets or towels to place under hot food? Oh, almost forgot to say how sublime the hot oil is...

Disappointing dishes

By Bob P |

We had not been to this place for many years but decided to try it again, and were happy to see the large selection of vegetarian options. But the food really disappointed. The scallion pancake was tough and bland. The mushu pancakes were terrible - very thick (much thicker than a tortilla) and leathery, and yet they fell apart as soon as we folded them. The filling was, at best, adequate. The Sechuan chicken was a bit better, maybe average. Service was spotty (they were crowded) -- the chicken dish arrived 5 minutes before the vegie mushu so either I could let my dish get cold, or my vegetarian wife could watch me eat. I guess I'm glad we tried it, but we will certainly not return.

Have to try Judy Fu's Snappy Dragon

By Launa H |

Went there for lunch today. Normally very crowed and have to wait. Probably Christmas time and everyone is busy. If you want good food for a great price. Snappy Dragon is where you want to go. Lunch specials range from $ 7.50 to $ 8.75 for a full meal and a lot of food. Clean and comfortable and have large tables for big groups. Try this Chinese restaurant and you won't go any where else.

Our kids love Judy's! Me? So-so.

By CudaRu |

A pretty good Chinese restaurant. Our kid love it, but I find the dumplings to be a bit too much. It is definitely filling, but seems to lack some finesse in the dishes. It tends to be very crowded, so be prepared to wait.

Always good

By greatcats |

Judy has been at this location for many years and is a Seattle institution. The food is always good. Service has always suffered, however. Be sure to buy some of her sauces on the way out, especially the peanut sauce.

Some excellent items, some bland...

By Richard F |

If you stay with what Judy Fu's is famous for - homemade noodles and dumplings - you can have a great meal. The crispy onion pancake was also good, but we found other items somewhat bland - the "spicy Mongolian" tofu had only a whisper of pepper and garlic, and the salt and pepper chicken was very salty but had only a little pepper, and that wasn't mixed in evenly. I have been told that if you want authentically spicy dishes you have to ask for them to be done that way, and I might try that on a return visit.

Best spot ever

By lori t |

I'm addicted to this place. It's a hit with everyone who visits me from out of town and when I check in here on fb I am left plenty of people's comments on how they wish they were here. The workers always make you feel welcome and the food is AWESOME!! The best thing about it is EVERYTHING! And even your penny pincher friends will love this place!

Sets a standard

By Rick B |

Snappy Dragon opened in 1993 and it must have been just about then that I first visited. This was back when David, the manager, and I both had no grey in our hair. I've never seen the quality waver in those years. I was in the neighborhood for years and would get carry-out, delivery, or dining in several times a week. My wife and I have just returned from living in a small town in Alaska with no Chinese food at all available, and Snappy was one of our first return-to-the-area meals. As well as the wonderful food, David's warmth and genuine friendliness at the door was great. And, best of all for a family member with food sensitivities, they have a complete separate menu with gluten-free options. Recommended, definitely recommended.

Dumplings, asparagus, and moo shu shrimp...

By Kerry M |

My partner's father and his wife suggested we have dinner here. We arrived to find it quietly filling on a Thursday night, around six thirty. We settled into a table upstairs and ordered. Everything we ordered (and shared) was excellent: chicken and asparagus with black bean sauce; moo shu shrimp; something else just as good, but I forget what. But, it was the veggie dumplings that made me weak.

Too Noisy

By Traveloscopy F |

OK, so it was a very busy night, but still it was so noisy that I had trouble being able to taste my food. My hosts said the food was teriffic and I believe them. The prices were very reasonable. Maybe next time I'm in Seattle and it isn't a holiday weekend, I'll give it another try. Meanwhile I hope they get some material on the walls and ceilings to absorb the taste-numbing noise.

Good selection of gluten free

By degan |

We were recommended to this place because my husband loves Chinese food but doesn't get to eat it often because he is celiac and can't have wheat (or soy sauce, etc.) Not only does this restaurant have an excellent menu but almost everything we tried was delicious. Will definitely be back.

Not what you expect when you first see the building.

By Brad C |

This is a great location, but deceptive from the outside. It is not that it is run down, but from the outside it is plain and you enter from the side and not the front. The restaurant is divided into two areas. There is a steady flow of customers. We were visiting our daughter and her family in Seattle and they had eaten here several times. We arrived and were surprised when asked if we had reservations. It was the first time they had been asked that, but found out that for parties of 5 or more that reservations are highly recommended. We were fortunate we were early and were able to be seated quickly. Within 30 minutes the crowds were increasing and by the time we left there wait time was growing. The food is very good and portions large. You could easily share portions unless you are very hungry. We ended up taking quite a bit home and had a nice meal the following day. Definitely a place to visit when in Seattle.

My wife and I discovered Judy Fu's Snappy Dragon about two years ago. The food's great, and the service is friendly and attentive. The barbecue pork is a particular favorite of mine.

Great Lunch to Go

By hudsbay |

I have been going here since the day they opened. This a great neighborhood restaurant that offers delivery and to go. They offer fresh Chinese food with homemade dumplings and noodles. This is not your typical Chinese restaurant but a step above the rest. Their commitment to using fresh ingredients is commendable. The restaurant is run by Judy and her son David whom you will find in the restaurant everyday. I have a particular fondness for their BBQ pork, green onion pancakes, Mongolian Beef and Kung pao scallops. One thing I will never forget is when they first opened they were so busy that I ran into David at the Safeway down the street having to stock up on green onions. Now that’s a neighborhood restaurant, doing the best to serve everyone. The seating inside can be limited on the weekends without a reservation. I like this place so much that when I moved to California, I once rented a car to get food to go to take back home to SF during a layover in SEA! I’m happy to be back and able to go here more often.

Worth finding!

By pantherspiratesandpa |

Really GOOD food. Huge serving sizes so you can share and try different dishes. Very reasonable prices. Good service. No frills atmosphere, but friendly and they know their food! I've been to Seattle many times and am sorry I didn't find this place sooner. I will be back.

Hit or miss

By revhawg |

The Food is outstanding, where it's lacking is the consistency of the service. Last time we went everyone was done with there food before my entree got to the table.

Can you have too many hand-made noodles? No, you cannot.

By DealLovingTraveler |

Seattle doesn't seem to have many good Chinese restaurants. This place is one of the exceptions. Don't let the exterior fool you; there's a reason there's a waiting line out the door at this place. The East Side has Din Tai Fung; Seattle has Snappy Dragon. Snappy Dragon has terrific hand-made noodles. They will cost you an extra dollar or two, but they are worth the price. You will definitely not feel skimped in paying extra; the portions here are huge. I was with a dining companion, and we ordered soup and a dish of chow mein. We were stuffed at the end of the meal, and we took home enough for the following day's dinner and lunch (yes, really). Portion size doesn't matter if the food isn't good. Fortunately, the food is terrific. It's cooked with a very light hand; there's very little oil involved. The flavors pop out. If you can't make it to Vancouver (which has lots of great Chinese restaurants), give Snappy Dragon a try!

Where do I start? The service was awful, and the waitresses moped around like a bunch of zombies. We ordered 2 entrees and a hombow appie. Nothing was good. I honestly cannot think of worse Chinese food in the area. Prices and portions were reasonable, but it's debatable whether we'll even eat the leftovers. Never going back.

The First Tuesday Supper Club meets at Judy Fu's Snappy Dragon

By ThomWalls |

A small group of us, Eight folks, meet last night at Judy Fu's Snappy Dragon in the Maplewood district of Seattle, one of our favorite Chinese restaurants in the city of Seattle. We ordered many dishes to share and every dish was a delight. I've been dining there for a decade and still find new dishes to try and enjoy.

Really my favorite "local" Chinese restaurant in the US... the best steamed dumplings I've had, hands down. And the rest of the menu - especially the fried rice, the noodles, and the spicy eggplant - is the closest thing to comfort food for me in the Seattle area.

A fun and tasty evening

By JudgeT |

Being from a rural area we do not have a Chinese food option, so it seems that when we are in Seattle we always migrate to Judy Fu's for the Asian food fix. Ordering family style is always fun as everyone picks what they want and you end up with experiencing some very interesting meals. The Snappy Dragon is always very busy and you may have a bit of a wait. They also do a huge take-out business. Service is quick and efficient and the food is always consistent and excellent. It is always nice to have a family dinner reasonably priced so that you don not have to put a mortgage on the homestead!

Major Treat

By Pamela T |

My host has taken me to Snappy Dragon twice on visits to Seattle. The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside. The crowded dining rooms have a "big living room" atmosphere and people are laid back and chowing down happily. It is very casual. The portions are hot, fresh, and generous. Two standout items we noted were that the General Tso's chicken was fried very crispy, and the homemade noodles were not uniform but more like longish dumplings or longish but otherwise random shaped spaetzle (I don't think the doughy noodles are for everyone, but it was worth the additional expense to us). I'd take guests or go back in a heartbeat.

There are better places

By SavTrav500 |

Seattle is the home to many Asians and is close to Vancouver; therefore, I have to believe that there are other places to get more authentic Chinese food. This place seems to cater to the average US palate. It was fine, nothing to complain about, but not really great. I will give kudos to the staff for letting us sit and linger for hours after lunch to catch up. They weren't busy (didn't need the table) and so didn't rush us.

By tarsier206 |

Bland food. Virtually tasteless. I tried it multple times thinking I may have just ordered the wrong thing, but it was all pretty tasteless. Dumplings are not good either, like eating a handful of undercooked dough.

Past its heyday

By CaTraveler7777 |

The entrance is covered with various awards, almost all of them a decade or so old and I have to believe that this place has passed it's better days. I can't remember a worse Chinese meal. The dumplings were tasteless with thick, tough dough. None of the noodle dishes were edible. The smoked duck was to tough to eat, the Peking pork and the beef and broccoli had low-quality meat, although the broccoli was very good. The salt and pepper shrimp were good quality shrimp and OK preparation. The pancakes that came with the Peking pork were inedible. We didn't even bother to taste the seafood soup.

Delivery Chinese to Hotel

By Jwaters521 |

I ordered on line for Hotel delivery. It arrived in about 40 minutes. The service ordering on the phone was excellent . The delivery of the food was also excellent. Warning the food was enough to feed 6 people. It was delicious . I liked the BBQ Pork and their special fried rice with chicken pork beef and shrimp. I will order again.

Love Chinese food - Love the Snappy Dragon

By Bridstow |

This is a restaurant that we have visited whenever in Seattle. It is one that we always enjoy with family members. It offers an incredible selection of authentic Chinese cooking which is inevitably preceded by the "rabbit in headlights" moment - it all looks great but which one do I run with? My suggestion is sample as much as possible! Having not planned ahead we took a risk having not made a reservation. Due to its popularity all the tables were full but along with others who know the quality of food here we were prepared to wait our turn. It was not long before the efficient Izzy directed us to our table and allocated our server for the evening. Advice is on hand should it be needed when making the choice that you need to satisfy your taste buds and hunger alike. The service was excellent and food outstanding. Although out of town the Snappy Dragon is a great restaurant and well worth a visit. If we lived nearby we would be regular visitors.
