Crowded Small Space

By Bryan H |

Arrived before the crowds really hit on a Friday evening about 6:20 p.m. or so. First started at a table that was awkwardly placed at the entrance of the bar, so the bartender and other staff were always having to squeeze by. It was distracting to feel as if you were always in someone's way. We changed tables. Oddly enough both the first and second table were a bit on the lop-sided side. I think the floor must be uneven in this restaurant or something. We tried to fix both (with the help of our server) with stuffing drink coasters under the table. It was part of the awkwardness of the place. The food and drink were good, though. Probably the best thing we ordered was the "signature starter" Nam Kao Tod, which was delicious. The table was a wee bit too small to handle all of our dishes, and they didn't time the entrees to come out when we were done with the appetizer, but we enjoyed the food, and eventually gave up our table. We could tell there was a line of people trying to get in for dinner. Would I go back? Yes. There are so many new restaurants in the city, though. Maybe it will be a while.

Great Place to Veg Out

By h22101 |

I don't know if it's a thing or not, but I haven't been to a veg Thai restaurant before and i think it's a great concept. For my lactose-intolerant husband, it's always nice to have many vegan options, and for I'm not usually going to miss the meat. My husband enjoyed a tofu dish and i had one of the best eggplant dishes I've had in a while (with basil and tomatoes). My request to remove a couple of ingredients was accommodated with a smile. In fact, our server was incredibly helpful and charming. What a great addition to the Division restaurant scene.

Not going back...

We tried this restaurant because it is advertised as a vegetarian/vegan Thai restaurant. We ordered two dishes and stressed to the waitress that we wanted very light oil. After the first dish arrived, we waited about 10 minutes for dishes to eat with. I finally gave up and ran after a server to request two dishes. The noodle dish we ordered was drenched in oil and we again waited to inform the waitress. They offered to remake the dish and the second one had slightly less oil, but still way beyond anything that we have ever received at other Thai restaurants. Our second dish was a soup option. Again, I had to track down a server to get bowls to eat the soup at the soup sat on our table for some time. We could only eat about 1/2 of our oily noodle dish. We left noticing a oily taste in our mouths for the next few hours. My wife experienced a stomach ache after we left. We do not plan to go back to this restaurant.

Maybe the best food I've ever eaten!

To be honest, this was not Plan A. My sister wanted Thai food for her birthday but the place we originally planned to go to had a wait time off over two hours. With three small children in our party, we decided to walk up the street and check out the new Thai place in the neighborhood. And we're we glad we did! We started off with the Basil Lover and Nam Kao Tod, both of which were excellent. I have never enjoyed tofu in any way, yet was won over by the manner it was prepared for Basil Lover. That set the stage for what may be the most delicious food I've ever placed in my mouth! The Gang Dang, a.k.a. Red Curry performed a culinary ballet across my taste buds with a perfectly synchronized dance of pumpkin, bamboo shoot, carrot, snow peas, and Thai eggplant dressed in curry seasoned coconut milk over a bed of Jasmine rice. The heat level was just right and pleasantly cooled by sips of vegan Thai iced tea. So they made five attempts at frying an egg for the children? I'd like to see Waffle House take on Gang Dang! The friendly wait staff and a persistent cook finally succeeded in producing an edible egg, but we were already won over. Welcome to Portland, KaTi. We hope you have a successful endeavor.

Thai Vegetarian really?

By silvera2 |

What is the best Thai restaurant in Portland Oregon? Probably KaTi, an all vegetarian quirky place. Minimal decor, open kitchen and very long lines no matter what time you go. Why? The food is amazing. Their pad tai with either fried or soft tofu and an egg or not and mild, medium or hot was the best I have ever had and the portion was enough for two so easy to share. Others had salads, a variety of street food snacks or other noodle or rice dishes and each one was perfect. They have a liquor license and they make inventive cocktails but for me a cooling Thai Iced Tea is the way to go. An option is to call ahead for take out if you have somewhere you can go to spread out the feast. Whatever you do do not miss this place. Some people avoid Thai food because of the fermented fish sauce many places use but KaTi is vegetarian so no fish sauce! Really, seek KaTi out you will be happy you did.

Perfect

This is the best Thai food I have had since visiting Thailand last year. Perfect for vegetarian and vegan options too! Thank you for a great meal.

Amazing Veggie Thai restaurant

By SJansala |

We went there for a dinner on Thursday evening. The foods we ordered were amazing, authentic and full of flavors. The Pad Thai was very delicious, probably the best Pad Tgai we ever had. Staff was friendly. Definitely come back!

Excellent Vegan Thai Food (yes, it is possible!)

By SasPDX |

I always eat Thai Food with a little concern that somewhere somehow some non-vegetarian element is likely to have slipped in my vegetarian dishes. Not so here. Completely vegan and lick-your-fingers tasty Thai food to die for. The specialty cocktails were good to the last drop. We were 10 people and had a variety of dishes and each one was better than the other. The Kati Pad thai, Nam Kao Tod, Pad Prik Khing, Pad Mhe Kha Na were some of the delicious food I'd recommend. The staff is excellent and gave us welcome suggestions when we leaned too much on similar-looking/tasting dishes. We are definitely going back to check off every single dish in this place. If you like Thai Food and are a vegetarian/vegan, it cant get any better than this!

OMB (Oh My Buddha)!

By Angela P |

This place delicious. We started with the seafood wrapped tofu. I can't believe I didn't think of this myself, as it was two of my fav things all in one dish. The seaweed gave it a nice texture and crunch. We ordered just that and the Boss's dish, but then I saw that a fellow Yelper comment that the Tom Kha Soup would be a request for his last meal. I might say dining at this restaurant would be my last meal I request, as everything we had was superb. We were sat next to the bar, and struck up a conversation with the bartender, who was constantly producing very colorful unusually looking drinks. I myself ordered the Thai Iced Green Tea. I have had a lot of Thai Iced Tea in my years, but this was like no other. Without a doubt this was the yummiest Thai Ice Tea that has ever graced my lips. Then the bartender brought over the Butterfly Pea Flower combined with Hibiscus Tea to sample. This was equally delicious. As previously stated by other Yelpers, yes it is noisy, but you are truly distracted by all the Yummy food to pay it any attention.

Delicious

Small and quaint place where you can see the action of the cooks as soon as you walk in. We each got a different dish and loved everything. Service was friendly and attentive.

Excellent doid

By Suzanne M |

Vegan Pad Thai rocked and so did everything else about our meals here. There were 6 of us and the only problem was that the place is so popular it was hard to hear our conversation! But clearly everyone was having a great time so we just enjoyed our food.

Fantastic experience all around!

By jen m |

Just went last Friday evening and it was one of my favorite places we ate at during our visit. I relied on our server, David, to help me find the right cocktail and dish. We ended up with two appetizers: the peanuts and the spicy fries. Both were lovely. I don't remember the name of my dish, but the two people I was with loved there choices, so I don't know if there's a wrong choice. I explained to David my dislike of mushrooms, and to help me narrow down a dish that wasn't mushroom dependent. He guided me in the best way. I did the same with my cocktail choice. Do yourself a favor and try "The Portland".

Cheers for vegetarian Thai food!

How wonderful to be able to look at a menu and not be concerned about meat dishes. There were so many options to choose from. We ate at a picnic table out front during Covid times. The ordering online was smooth and efficient. The price is right! Ingredients were fresh and dishes were super tasty. The curry dish was divine. Samosas were lovely and sweet. My only wish is that there was a “mild” option, as the medium was a tad too spicy for me!

Vegetarian Thai that's actually vegetarian...

By TravellingRi |

KaTi is a vegetarian/vegan Thai restaurant that keeps all of the flavour but skips the fish sauce, shrimp paste etc. One of the best massamam curries I've ever had and the lunch special were excellently priced. This is a spot to visit for the food, not necessarily the ambiance. Worth checking out while strolling along SE Division.

Tasty Thai Food

Excellent traditional Thai food. Food was so delicious that we decided to return to this restaurant more frequently. A courteous staff with a smile. Thank you

Delicious food and great service

By Adam R |

This is an excellent restaurant if you're looking for vegetarian and vegan options or if you just want delicious food. They were very good at explaining their menu and answering all of our questions which we had a lot of. The food was well-prepared and delicious to eat, I would highly recommend eating here if you were a vegetarian, vegan or neither.

Super Yum

By turkergirl |

It's rare that I can eat at a Thai restaurant with 100% confidence that the food I'm ordering, despite all the promises by the servers, is actually vegan. Fortunaltey, I don't have to go into this now. For now, all I want to do is remember how awesome the food is at KaTi, and lament that it will be a long time until I'm able to go back. For those of you who can go sooner than me, here's a few bits of advice: #1 - order a cocktail -- something with gin in it. Maybe a creamsicle. Yum. #2 - order the lettuce wrap #3 - get soup -- especially Tom Yum, if you're on the verge of a cold #4 - let your server and the bartender guide you to order something you've never tried before

Most excellent Thai food, whatever your culinary inclination

By David K |

Anyone and everyone can enjoy everything at this delightful neighborhood Thai. Flavors you've perhaps not come across before in abundance, with sidewalk tables and interesting drinks. Oddly, you can order your selections 'NO spicy', which would rather seems to negate the raison d'être of Thai food...or perhaps open the door to new acolytes. Will return post haste next time in PDX.

Delicious!

By Charding |

Seriously delicious veggie food! The inside is closed currently, but the helpful employees got us taken care of and we ate out front. The food was perfect with a ton of options!

Vegan again, loved the options

Stopped by in the Division area of Portland neighborhood eatery for one last meal before we all going our separate ways at PDX to fly away until the next time. Love visiting our daughter in her new area of the nation.

Fresh and flavourful thai food!

By tellatraveltale |

I was curious about how the vegetarian thai fare would be. That meant no fish sauce which is so commonly used in their recipes. We got an outdoor table as the inside seating was packed. We ordered a Pad Pak stir fry, Green curry and a Pad woon sen. The stir fry sauce was nice, the green curry had pumpkin which was a nice touch. The noodles were peppery and had a great smoky flavour. Everything tasted delicious, fresh, the curry paste for the curry tasted like it had been freshly prepared too. The only thing I didn't like was the way the vegetables had been cut, the pieces were very chunky. Because of that they were not cooked evenly. I did mention this to the owner and she was very nice about hearing our feedback. She noted that we could ask for them to be cut a bit smaller during our next visit. It was very gracious and very sweet of her. Our server brought us a mango and sticky rice on the house. It was a very nice gesture from the owners. I felt that they really cared about their customers. The prices were good and the portions were also adequate. A great place for delicious Thai food on the east side! Would highly recommend this restaurant.

Best Thai Food in Portland!

By Jacob M |

I have probably been eating at Kati Thai since they first opened and have never gotten tired of their food. Fresh, delicious, and vibrant flavors that will leave you wishing for more! There hasn't been a single dish that I didn't like and I have to also mention that the staff here are AWESOME! If you are here when they open back up for dine-in, you MUST stop by and try their cocktails. TRUST ME, you won't be disappointed!

2nd Visit.....Excellent

By JSD53 |

Service was prompt and the food delicious! The Thai fried rice with veggies was yummy. Come hungry because the portions are huge.

Love this neighborhood spot!

By Jackie2345 |

I'm not vegan/veg, but I don't miss the meat in this Thai food! Every time I have visitors I bring them here, and it instantly becomes everyone's favorite. It's a great addition to this evolving neighborhood. They are pretty consistent with every visit, but it's getting popular and busier on weekends. It's in the middle of construction in almost every direction, but still is cute and wonderful!

Unique menu

By Sawadee28 |

The star of our meal was the miang kham, a Thai snack I've rarely found in U.S. restaurants. I would come again just for that. The dish comes with lots of little components that you build yourself on a betel leaf. The sauce was sweet and addicting and played nicely with the raw ginger and bits of lime. After such an amazing beginning the meal itself was mixed. The sauces were all phenomenal, but the vegetables in both the soup and the curry were over cooked. It might have been an off night in the kitchen. If I were to return, though, I would probably stick to a noodle dish. That and the miang kham.

Wow

By BoboTravlr |

We stopped in to KaTi while waiting for our table at Pok Pok. We only had time for one dish, the fried rice with lettuce wraps, not sure of the name but everyone raved about it so we had it. OK, so we both dropped our jaws at first taste. The dish was the best thing we have ever eaten in our lives, no lie, really. We will definitely be back because all we could think about when we finally sat down at Pok Pok was the fried rice thing we ate at KaTi!

Outstanding and Delicious Food

You will not miss the meat at this restaurant. Lots to choose from and the freshest of Vegetables! The food was cooked perfectly and tasted wonderful. Definitely a Portland must. Our server, David, was helpful and knowledgeable.

Tasty value priced lunch

By Doug H |

We live in the neighborhood and decided to stop by KaTi for lunch. They have outdoor dining but the day was uncomfortably hot so we ate inside. The setting is casual and comfortable. The menu was extensive but they had a section of lunch specials for $8.95 all of which looked good. Our server, Maria, was friendly, helpful and attentive without being overly so. The food was promptly served and was delicious. We were uncertain about what the various "heat" levels were so ordered milder versions but were give hot chili oil on the side to increase the amount of burn to what we were comfortable with. The house cocktail list looked interesting but I opted for a craft beer. All in all we found good food, service and value at KaTi and it will be a place we will visit again.

Brand New and Waiting for you

By jackwidely |

Yes, another Thai place... On Division in SE Portland... but after only a few weeks, it stands out. Vegetarian completely. Vegan is possible on most dishes. Cooks fresh for you. Food is not rushed or made in large batches. we did lunch, good size crowd, but no waiting. Had their KaTi Spicy Fries for starters. Curly fries with Chili Paste and Tom Yum flavor. to die for. take them away before i just eat them all. Pad See Ew with fried tufo was perfect. noodles big and soft and served hot. mushrooms and other veggies cooks just right with egg (or not if vegan) mixed into the wonderful sauce. Gang Keow Wahn is green curry with veggies including pumpkin. not the spiciest, but a fine curry with your choice of rices and tufo. Gang Mussa-Muhn was a coconut milk and curry paste with veggies and rice. very much to my liking. Thai Ice Tea and Thai Ice Coffees were large and perfect. much more to turn next time-- we hardly touched the menu's depth.

UNREAL flavors, so damn good

By rosaPDX13 |

the Boss is tamarind sauce with deep fried crispy tempeh, the coconut soup is divine. flavors are so flavorful and yummy! i keep going back!

Vegetarian and Thai Food finally come together!!!

By VivAjja |

This last weekend we had dinner at KaTI Portland. Everytime I eat at a Thai restaurant and order vegetarian food, I end up eating the food with a sense of doubt. Finally, I got introduced to this place that serves both vegetarian and vegan. OMG!! the food tastes awesome!! It is a small place with a Max capacity of maybe 40 people. The tables were being turned around relatively quickly and the place was busy. Service was equally great. We ordered the KaTi spicy fries. The dipping sauce was just out of this world. Cilly paste with a combination of soy sauce and lemon or Tamrind. Something completely different than Ketchup a staple for fries. The garlic and pepper tofu was perfect!! We did order medium spicy but it was relatively mild. This coming from someone who gets a heartburn with the slightest amount of spice. Go check out the place but be patient about getting seated.

Used to be great, but indifferent staff has ruined the experience and the food

By Katherine Wolfe |

I used to really love this place - it had such great Thai food, and the people there were so congenial it was a real pleasure to do business with them. But unfortunately, that isn't true any more. I ordered food without spice, like I have for years, and when we got it home it was so spicy one spoonful of tom kha was so hot a whole glass of milk wasn't enough to kill the pain in my stomach. I called to complain, and the man I talked to said that, sorry, this *was* their No Spicy - and if I couldn't tolerate that level of spiciness perhaps I should eat somewhere else. Perhaps I should - perhaps you should, too.

Best Vegan Thai

By JasperMarks |

If you're vegan and craving Thai food get in here. This is the best Thai food I've ever eaten; and, I've traveled and eaten in Thailand. The flavors are incredible and the dishes thoughtfully and artfully prepared without pretence.
