Service excellent, food not so much

By jfox43 |

I ordered the sashimi box and eel sushi and the sashimi/sushu was mediocre at best. There are much better places to get sushi/sashimi in Atlanta - try elsewhere. The service was excellent and friendly.

Ugh. No more sushi for me. ever.

By Gavin F |

Ugh. My wife and I got really sick from eating here. We'd been quite a few times over the years and always liked it, but there was something we ate the last time we went that made us both violently ill. That was almost 3 months ago now and I still get queasy thinking about it. I hate to write a bad review, since the servers are always very friendly and the sushi and sashimi had always been great in the past. Maybe it was just bad luck and could have happened anywhere, but I will never go back there.

Good sushi, place is difficult to find

By Wix S |

So I arranged a lunch with a professional friend here because it was close to his workplace. The place was really difficult to find. That part of the city has a high Asian population and the signs are mostly in Chinese, Japanese or Korean. I can't read any of those languages. I finally found it. I got there early and they let me sit and work even though they weren't open. The staff were pleasant and friendly. My colleague showed up and we ordered. The miso soup and the salad were good. The sushi was very, very good and the portions were huge. We both enjoyed the lunch. See my pix attached. I would definitely eat there again if I'm in that part of town--and this time, I'll be able to find the place

Best Sushi in the Country-Order the Sashimi Special

By Rich K |

The best kept Sushi secret restaurant in the country. Maybe I shouldn't write this review because it will be overrun. I have been following Mr. Park, the Korean Sushi chef and owner for about 20 years. He spent time in Japan learning the art and is a perfectionist when it comes to fresh fish and new ideas. When I had clients in from New York, Paris or LA I would drive an hour from the airport to bring them to the other restaurant where Mr. Park worked on Pleasant Hill Road, way north of Atlanta proper. It was worth the drive. One day we went into that far away restaurant and Mr. Park wasn't there. They said he went back to Korea for good. Very depressing. We tried all the other Sushi restaurants, some good some bad and all very expensive. Long story short, after about a year since my last Mr. Park sighting, my wife and I decided to walk into and try for the first time Kang Nam as it is convenient to the International Farmers Market where we food shop. Low and behold, who was behind the Sushi Bar, you guessed it. I could describe how great and fresh the fish is, but I am just going to add pictures, because "every picture tells a story."

Definitely one of the best restaurants!

Went there for lunch and got blown away. When you enter, you get slapped with the smell of fish. Of course that is why you are there. The food is amazing. The presentation is amazing. The ambiance is authentic and amazing. And the service is the best... Don't forget the ice cream in the end!

Great sushi...if you're Korean

By EBIATDA |

"Why does it matter if you're Korean," you ask? Because (and I am indeed Korean), if you're not Korean, they'll assume that you don't assume typical Korean treatment, meaning: - unlimited free side dishes (this is a biggie, especially for the fried fish and kimchee) - on-the-house additional off-the-menu items like the Korean seafood pancake and the rice gruel - free hot tea - free extra rice - free bowl of seafood stew If you're not Korean, you can still have a great meal. You just won't get all the free extras. The fish is extremely fresh. They have great variety. They have a fish tank that has live fish (if you dare to eat live fish (see other YouTube videos about eating live fish). They are also one of the few places that serves blowfish. They have a great layout in the restaurant - private rooms, which are great for dates - as well as a friendly open lively (no pun intended) regular dining area. Though many people think the service is lacking, it is typical culturally speaking, as Korean restaurants consider it "disturbing" to the diners if they keep coming by; whereas Westernized diners think it is is poor service if the waitress does not come by frequently to ask if everything is ok.

Nice Dinner

We sat at the sushi counter as it was quite busy on a Saturday night. The food was excellent. Enjoyed chiriashi-don and grilled mackerel. We look forward to returning. Good prices too.

Wonderful meal!

Meal was delicious, sushi very fresh and flavorful. The staff was very accommodating and kept offering more miso soup (made on site) and other side dishes. Price was very fair.

Great sushi spot with plenty of private spaces

By imskimmy |

Amazingly fresh sushi and experience. We were there with a big group so we had our own private area with a large table seating with almost 15 people. Several side dishes came out as appetizers, the main entree of sushi was amazing (complete with fresh raw lobster, a variety of fresh sashimi, several shellfish varieties), a second entree of seafood stew, and another dish was prepared that we were too stuffed to eat so we got it wrapped up. We had a scoop of strawberry ice cream as a palate cleanser to finish off the meal. All around it was a great experience and the waiters/waitresses were great at accommodating our needs and helping clean up plates once a dish was completed. We were offered/given a choice of ice water or hot tea and the service was great!

Good sushi!

Staple sushi spot when others don't open in town until later in the day. Fish is usually very fresh, rarely (no pun) have a bad experience here. All around very good, great service!

Delicious Sushi

By CandisCW |

Tucked in between a couple strip malls, this place blends in and almost goes unnoticed. My friend and I sat at the sushi bar and I was impressed by the menu which had all the different options in color photograph. It made choosing so much easier! The 3 rolls we ordered (I forget the names now) were served on a nice tray with a beautiful garnish. Of all the sushi I've ever had, these were in the top for sure. The service was polite and helpful. I enjoyed it very much.

Great sushi

By LaKaya B |

We sat near the sushi bar so I don't know what the private rooms look like. The sushi was creatively presented, delicious tasting and plentiful. There were regulars at the bar who had quite a bit to drink and made some very offensive statements, and somewhat ruined my experience. Staff was friendly and food was great.

Fresh and New

By asufan97 |

We found this place by finding out the original restaurant we were going to was closed. It is tucked away and has a mix of Korean and Japanese, a compromise on our taste for that night. The food was presented beautifully with good portions and fresh made to order dishes. The sushi had inventive options like a bacon roll and the seafood soup was delicious. We will be going back again frequently to try out the entire menu. Also enjoy the small room booths off to the side and the atmosphere, you can tell it was an authentic family run place. Love it.

The Best Sushi

By #positivevibe |

We have been some of the lucky ones to know about this wonderful restaurant. Chef Park serves up the freshest best cuts of fish around. He is a true artist and kind man. I will always be their biggest fan!

Last minute stop, glad we did it!

We tried Kang Nam late on a Saturday night. We saw the 4.6 out of 5 rating, but had no other information. Really fantastic Sushi. Everything was good. Awesome service and will certainly be back...

Fresh fast sushi!

By rtriptraveler |

Sometimes the best places are off the beaten path, restaurant is quaint but the sushi is sooo good! We had a small group so had a little private room and expected to wait a while for the sushi but that was not the case here! Our sushi was delivered quickly and showcased in a beautiful boat! Everything was fresh and delicious!

Assorted sashimi is ok

By hkhine |

It comes with udon noodles. Tuna, salmon, hamachi, artificial crab meat, eggs with tempura, rolls, salad. Fish is fresh. Felt like should include better materials and faked crab meats are for rolls and shouldn't be in sashimi. Good thing is big portion. Ordered Jackchi roll which is good. Will visit again sometimes for hungry and comfort but not to eat sashimi.

Come hungry

By Fred B |

We enjoyed a great lunch here, but be warned, if you order the sushi/sashimi lunch special, you won't be able to eat it all. Comes with soup, salad, and other goodies. Then the sushi/sashimi platter is not several pieces of sashimi, but several TYPES of sashimi. Two people might have a problem finishing everything on one lunch special!

My first time here

By Thomas M |

My first time here and glad my daughter chose this restaurant for lunch. Her, my grandson and myself were seated into a small private room with one table and a curtain. Service was fast and friendly. Quite a large menu and prices were average for a big, healthy lunch. Three appetizers were placed on our table. Next our meals came out hot. I had the box with prime rib. My daughter had the box with chicken and grandson had fried rice. We also ordered sushi. Plenty of food came in the box. I enjoyed all 6 items that came in the box. I will go there again if I ever get to Doraville again.

Great Korean/Sushi place to visit

By Vitaly S |

I was very surprised with the quality of food and the prices. The service was super great and fast. sushi was great quality and Bibimbap with Sashimi is a must to try! highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for good Korean/Japanese restaurant. Very clean, nice and accommodating.

Great dishes!!!!

Could have been better

By FierceSappho |

My date and I chose Kang Nam to have sushi. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant so all the waitstaff kinda gathered at the door and watched us. Not the best ambiance. I noticed there are little private booths all around the side, which looked romantic. It might have been better there. The complimentary starter dishes were fun. I didn't care for the cabbage-type dish, but the miso soup was yummy. We picked a few appetizers for more variety. The cheesy corn was good, the fried tofu was ok and the potato croquets were awesome. There were some interesting rolls on the menu. We chose the Kentucky roll which had chicken in it (cooked of course). The chicken was like a hard bit of wood. The flavor combination was good, but the overcooked chicken made it hard to eat. The other roll was average with avocado, crab and eel. Overall, it was ok, but not spectacular.

Brookhaven Social Club ...

This is a favorite for our picky friday lunch club. The fish is fresh and prepared by an expert sushi maker. Everyone is super friendly. We'll be back!

Tasty Japanese cuisine!

By Milthill |

About noon today, Sunday, we were looking for a Korean place I had read about without finding it. We noticed how nanyang cars were already at Kangaroo Nam, so we stopped. A table for two was available immediately, so we took it. We chose two of the lunch specials, #5 and #7. My wife had udon with shrimp tempura roll and I had udon with sushi. Both were among the least expensive choices and were both larger meals than we expected. Our charge was $30.98 plus tax and tip. Forks were offered when we struggled with the udon. That helped greatly! Service was beyond our expectations. Food quality was quite good. Speed was top notch without us feeling rushed.

Popular spot ... and deservedly so

By Jeffrey D |

This restaurant is straight across Buford Highway and about a block north of the very popular Buford Highway Farmers Market, which makes it a perfect place to grab lunch after a morning shopping run. It's pretty with the local Asian community, so reservations are a good idea, especially on weekends and even for lunch. Two of us arriving around 1 PM on a Saturday without reservations waited about 20 minutes for a table to clear. Make sure you note the call button on your table, especially if seated in a private booth as the wait staff will respect your privacy if you don't call. Once we got over that little hump the waitstaff were quite attentive and efficient. We order the two sushi+sashimi options -- one with a large bowl of udon soup, the other with a variety of tabiko roe over the top of rice -- as well as a couple of appetizers (edamame and seaweed salad). It was a ton of very tasty food for about $65, which just meant that dinner was light and late that evening. We definitely plan to return on our next visit to the northside.
