YUM!!! GET THE BRUSSEL SPROUT CHIPS

By Mima W |

While eating here, the ambience made me 100% sure I was going to see a celebrity (I didn't) but the feeling was close enough. This restaurant has such a cool feel to it and the food isnt bad either - the brussel sprout chips were to die for!!

Try the tasting menu

By miasoog |

We visited Katsuya on a Tuesday evening for dinner. The restaurant is much bigger than it looks from the street, and even though it is located in a fairly touristy street, the ambience were relaxed and the service were attentive. We had the chef's tasting menu which took us through some of Katsuya's classic dishes. Great quality and taste, highly recommendable if you want to try a bit of everything. We had five courses and left very full and happy. Only comment were that the music didn't really match the atmosphere for a romantic dinner which we were looking for. But if you are a larger group or a couple of friends going out, it might work better.

Amazing Food & Staff

By Carly G |

The food is incredible no matter what you order! As a vegetarian, there is plenty of options, and they have a few vegan selections as well. The staff is all welcoming, and a huge shout out to Sam our waiter! He went over the top and made our night so much fun!

OUTSTANDING

By Elise M |

We were trying to find a place for lunch and we walked to the restaurant and looked at the menu and instantly knew that we were eating here. The seaweed salad was perfect and the sushi was delicious. There is a huge menu so everyone can find something to eat. Our waiter was great and the presentation was impressive.

Great sushi

By DNB571 |

Lively, good service and great sushi. Awesome cocktails too! The creamy rock shrimp is surprisingly good. We had the sushi sampler which was well presented and tasted good overall.

Lovely

By Allan Stewart |

Not a big fan of Japanese. But my family overruled me and I went under duress. Brilliant!!!! Black cod amazing. Fried to a crisp Brussel sprouts delicious. Lobster.... Ok getting bored looking for superlatives. I couldn't fault it. Very cool vibe and great decor. So good we are going again tonight.

Good food. Watch the bill.

By world_MD |

We were two couples and ordered the $85 tasting menu for all of us. Besides the drinks, we had an extra charge for Brussels sprouts on the bill. We would have gladly paid for them even if they told us. It just kind of sneaked up on the bill. The food and ambience were excellent and the live DJ was excellent. The tasting menu was filling and delicious. Beautiful presentation and a good way to taste the chef’s recommendations. Service was good and when one of the courses was delayed, they brought us the Brussel sprouts which were divine. (Yes. I am still upset that they charged us for it and we realized too late to question). Overall great experience.

Sushi

By Adoo1 |

As always the food was awesome . Very friendly staff. The only problem I had it was very dark. I highly recommend the albacore sashimi.

Very good orange chicken

By The Americans |

My kids have been asking for orange chicken the whole week, so we took them to this restaurant. My kids really enjoyed the orange chicken and chow mein. While my wife and I ate some really good sushi. We wouldn't mind to eat here again.

A huge disappointment

By honestgerman |

We have chosen this restaurant due to the good reviews. Unfortunately this so called restaurant has nothing to do with Japanese food. The interior design is the only positive point to mention. The acoustic was horrible. You couldn’t talk to each other. Like in cheap cantina. We left the restaurant with headache. The quality of food was less than average. The prices were too high in relation for what you get. A pity and disappointment.

Excellent Sushi

By TomP7433 |

Was in town for a long weekend at the convention center and ate here two nights in a row. The sushi is excellent and fresh and the spicy edamame was the best I've ever had. Food prices were very reasonable. Drinks were way overpriced and not very tasty. The Sunset roll was amazing, spicy tuna roll was on par with most other sushi restaurants, Rainbow roll was excellent.

Only average sushi too much emphasis on atmosphere

By Victor H |

Wrong balance between food at sphere. Sushi is at the most average and disappointing. Hipster sphere has to compensate this but for me it was totally the wrong balance. First food and than sphere it's should be. Alas we chose the wrong restaurant to enjoy real sushi.

Good Service, Expensive

By PLO528 |

We had great service and the food was great! The portions are small and expensive. It is unusual for me not to have leftovers but the portions were so small that I actually ate both my plates. We had an early dinner and had reservations. Reservations are definitely recommended. You still might have a wait.

Good food, good ambience and attentive staff

By CNLVS |

Menu was interesting, some portions tiny and some good sized. Beef rib yakitori my favourite. Pretty food presentation and bit pricey. In spite of having a booking, we had to wait 30 mins. But at least the wait resulted in a good table. Good night out.

Sushi and Japaneese Food

By Debra A |

It is an ok restaurant. I think a little to commercial and there is a chain of Katsuya's. I like but don't love the food or the Sushi there. I am spoiled with really great Sushi places to go to in Los Angeles. I only go here if my friends want to go.

Very cozy modern place with amazing food

By Tina B |

My boyfriend and I really loved this restaurant! We started with a cocktail in the bar. Recommend to try their mescal mule. Then we ate the tasting menu which was amazing! Every single corse was perfect and the menu had a good balance. The servers were very nice and professional. The only downside was the loud music in the restaurant. Don't miss this place if you're in Hollywood and want a more fancy dinner out!

creamy shrimp

By jamie p |

amazingly delicious restaurant, we had a selection of sushis and they were mouth watering but my favourite was creamy shrimp

Amazing Experience

By Okinawa2357 |

Ate at Katsuya for our anniversary on a weekday night at 730. It was not busy and the service was good. Tried the Gyoza, Crispy Rice w/Spicy Tuna, Brussels Sprouts, and the crispy shrimp roll. The flavor and experience was really great and I would definitely go back. Give it a try!!

Sit at the bar

By Kate F |

Well balanced, creative cocktails and a complementary menu that rounds out the contemporary, elegant and always odd STARCK concept. Dark, dreamy spaces to indulge in sushi and great cocktails.

Great food staff was amazing and food was 10/10 . Could recommend and return again. Wagu main was amazing...

classic and innovative japanese cuisine

By Fredontheroad |

outstanding japanese food. both traditional and innovative, and everything super fresh. great atmosphere (there is a liveDJ), super service

great recommendation

By Courtney G |

A good friend of mine said we had to go here, even though we were staying in Venice (35 mins away) - it was SOOO worth it! We sat at the sushi bar and were mesmerized - we are big sushi fans and often sit at the sushi counter and this was truly amazing. Food was different and so delicious - menu is small (for a sushi menu) and manageable. Service was excellent, only drawback was music is very loud (house DJ) . Very hip and cool scene - mostly classy guests until we came out to a girl puking on the side walk in her black mini!! oh dear

Good food (veg options) and nice atmosphere

By Enrica B. A. |

Located on Hollywood Blvd, It's considered one of the best restaurants in LA. The food is really good, the service is great and the staff friendly. The atmosphere and ambiance are really nice. The only not positive point: too much crowd (was Saturday evening).

Unimpressed and disappointed

By Curlieeq |

Went here for what I hoped would be a romantic NYE dinner. We were seated next to two half dressed women taking selfies and we were literally 6 inches from their table. No privacy or intimacy at all. The waitress was short when I asked about gluten free sushi options. There was no flexibility to make a gluten free sushi roll with rice, as it has malt vinegar and it was at “my discretion” to eat it. When my boyfriend asked her again, as he thought this made no sense, she was abrupt about the answer and appeared annoyed. I wasn’t impressed with the selections of gluten free options that I did have. We ended up leaving g feeling hungry due to wanting to leave so quickly. Friendlier staff would have been wonderful. I will end on a good note: music and vibe was overall great. Crispy tuna sushi was amazing (gf).

Loved the sushi- and many side dishes - also very good service

By Pepper |

Showy restaurant with very good service and some prime sushi. We had a very good meal here just having side dishes and not getting the entrees. Also had the Brussels sprouts which were extremely good ( crispy as advertised) and good cocktails. Expensive but to be expected in this location. I think the sushi was extremely fresh which made every kind we ordered quite lovely. I had a spicy tuna hand roll that was especially good. My only critique is that we were so close to the door we were almost out of it-- but it was extremely crowded so we were lucky to get a table at all. I would definitely go again.

The food is good, but don't go if you want to talk...

By rijima |

I booked this because it was near my hotel, I love sushi and it had good reviews. Well, the food was good, but not outstanding enough to want to put up with the vibe again sadly. It was so dark in the dining room that we had to use the torches on our phones to read the menu. This can put you off a place quite quickly! By the time the food arrived, the ambient music was knocked up to a level that made talking rather difficult. If you like a dark, party vibe for dinner then perhaps this would be right up your street, but for me it was a huge disappointment. Eating food in semi-darkness really doesn't add to the enjoyment of eating the food. All in all, too hip for it's own good. I've since been told that the other branches of Katsuya away from Hollywood are way better. I wouldn't be able to recommend this one unfortunately.

Glendale Location needs major improvement

By marleejnassar |

I was expecting good things from this well known place but the one is Glendale, Los Angeles location was a major let down. The server had a bad attitude, the food servers were bringing stuff to the wrong tables, the manager looked like she was in La la land. The music at lunch time was wayyy too loud, it was just all around a disappointment.

Wow Tasting Menu!

By Nadine L |

This is the sort of place where you want to get the tasting menu. You cannot possibly choose better than the chef can. Loved the trendy setting, this was very busy for a Monday night… I think. Had an absolutely lovely meal with various courses each of them special. The assortiments were well thought out at each course. Portions are small and that’s fine because you get to try more dishes! Very high-quality, well designed, perfectly executed food. What surprised me I must say is how great the dessert plate of the tasting menu was. You would not typically associate Asian food with amazing dessert, but there was a mix of different things and it was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. Silly detail, there are some Hollywood stars plates on the street in front of this restaurant, I had not expected this and it was a nice surprise for my first night in Hollywood! If you are in LA you have to go to Katsura.

Great vibe !

By 'DTK'UItraveler |

Katsuya does not disappoint. Food is good ! Service is good ! Place is classy, not pretentious and just a very cool overall vibe.

Good but very expensive

By Jerry P |

The sushi is very good but there are so many places that you can get good sushi in LA. What you pay for here is the design by Phillippe Stark... And the celebrity of the owner.

Good quality

By Joe M |

Katsuya is a good sushi restaurant. They have some refreshing cocktails. This location does not seem to have an afternoon happy hour like another location that I've been to but they do have a lunch menu. The food was fresh and well prepared. We ordered a little too much for two people and had to take some home. Their sashimi salad and rock shrimp were favorites. The staff was very nice and accommodating to us with a baby. However there is no changing table in the restroom so I wouldn't call this a place to take infants if you have a choice.

DELISH

By Desiree Braithwaite |

Where do i even begin, such a fresh selection. everything was so flavorful and the atmosphere is so great and chill! I had a simple salmon roll and some sake. Ugh cant wait to go back been dreaming about this menu since i visted 😭

Fresh Sushi!

By mia-gm-415 |

One of the best fusion Japanese restaurants I've been to. The sashimi was fresh, the appetizers and the platter of desserts were delicious. But my most favorite is the gyoza, brussels sprouts and the wagyu fried rice. We sat in a corner private room and the servers never failed to check up on us and our beverages were always poured for us. All in all, food, ambiance and service was great.

Worst visit ever

By Lina P |

Absolutely terrible experience, food very mediocre not fresh at all sushi rice is wrong consistency wings arrived totally burnt. Service shocking, prices outrageously high for all of this. Do not visit, spend your money somewhere else!

Loud, busy, not many gluten free options, average food

By Brian B |

Japanese food is usually pretty easy to find gluten free. Rice is used more than wheat in most japanese cooking and if you go to higher end restaurants, they tend to use tamari over regular soy sauce since it tastes better. Apparently not at Katsuya. While most restaurants in this budget class would be more willing to accommodate gluten free, the most they would do is put sauces on the side. As for the food we did order, sushi was fresh and tasty but the wagyu didn't compare to the robata we had previously at Katana's. It was buried in mushrooms, cubed into small pieces and slightly over cooked. Our waiter did his best, but was clearly managing too many tables. Overall, decent food but for a high price, I would expect more.

One of my favorites in Hollywood for sushi

By Barry |

Very hip and crowded on a Friday night, with excellent food and service. We had several selections from the daily specials as well as a few from the regular menu and loved everything we tasted. After having read so much about it beforehand, I was not disappointed in the least.

Great food but service slightly overwhelming.

By LondonLockwood |

We were staying a 10 minute walk from here and decided to try it on the back of TA reports. When you enter the vastness of the place comes to mind .. there are tables everywhere but still plenty of room and certainly not cramped in any way. We had sushi and some maki type rolls to start followed by some hot beef and chicken dishes. At first it felt like I was in a speed eating comp .. Just ordered and bang ! There they were .. Delicious eel sushi with a good sauce and prawn similar .. Like the film .. gone in 60 seconds. Joking apart . The service was a bit sharp .. not sure our drinks had arrived . The meat dishes were first class tho ... We were in and out in no more than an hour and a half . If you want to sit and mull over a meal for a while I would suggest looking elsewhere but if quality and time is of the essence then this is for you .. comes highly recommended. Enjoy !

Still Great

By allnines1414 |

Even after all these years Katsuya still has really good sushi and an innovative menu. We even did take out and it was boxed great and so very fresh.

Great food and service

By Bulent U |

Second time there after 3 years. Tastes even better. The roll with eel is a must have. Service fast and efficient. Very helpful reception. Super deco. Nothing to say bad. Will go again as long as they keep what they have.

Best place

By Sara P |

Zachariah was the best server and the food was amazing! I would recommend the yellow tail, wagyu goyza and the rock shrimp. All so yummy

Good sushi in downtown LA.

By Christina K |

Good food and atmosphere. Some of the food was amazing, some just okay IMO. I highly recommend the chefs special of Katsuya Ceviche. The shishito peppers are great, the portion though is rather large (better to have with a table of more than two), and some are spicy (so good).

Hip to the hilt

By Jopin55 |

If you want to take a dip with millennials , that's the place. You will be surrounded by daters and single people looking like they are fishing for more than fish. I was totally disconnected from the sushi chef, he wouldn't make any eye contact which I don't want you to think I don't know about Asian culture, but if at first, they don't want to intrude, eventually few words at a minimum should be exchanged about food. In this case, a silence was the word. On the other hand, the cute waitress was chatty and it's true I like the more colorful Japanese chef who can recount a tail or 2 on how he arrived to this Chef position, who is their inspiration. something real, if you know what I mean. Anyway, the good news is that the food was great and the service was fast and professional. Maybe I am in need of love... Try this place you may feel differently about it. It is not Nobu but it is Nobu for kids

My favourite sushi in Hollywood!

By Donia H |

Delicious rolls, gorgeous ambiance, lovely restaurant, and packed with the rich and famous (for a reason clearly!) We have visited Katsuya twice in total, we always go back whenever we're in LA. I hear celebs absolutely love it here and for good reason! We had the seaweed salad (which was to die for), the cucumber salad, and the Rock shrimp tempura roll is the most delicious thing I've had (it's their signature roll) it's soooo good if you like shrimp! Each roll is topped with fried shrimp covered in spicy mayo (See photo) ....definitely don't miss out on this one. We also tried the Spicy Tuna Roll and the regular Shrimp Tempura roll (yummy), and the Corn Crunch Roll (everything was sublime). If you love sushi and you're in LA, definitely hit this up on Hollywood Blvd. Enjoy!

Japanese at its best

By jacqueline285 |

Phenomenal atmosphere, the place was jumping, talk about lights camera action! Cleverly & expensively fitted out with a scrumptious menu to match! Loved every dish, fish steamed in particular

Never tasted anything like it!

By snooks23 |

I eat sushi everywhere I go I love it. This was by far the tastiest I've ever had. The albacore was one of a kind. Its pricey but its worth it if you want to try some amazing sushi.

don't read this review, just go

By chiandretired |

Great place with great service and great food. My salmon sashimi with caviar caught the eye of neighboring tables. When I hesitated before eating it, the server said she would sprinkle it with sauce then pick it up with her fingers (a much appreciated tip). And it was delicious.

Exceeded expectations

By Elizabeth L |

The food burst with different flavors and interesting texture combinations. 100% enjoyed our food and experience with friendly and helpful staff and a great atmosphere.

All good at Katsuya

By BronteBucket |

We had a great meal at Katsuya. Delicious food and friendly staff. The decor is modern with cool decor and very low lighting - however so low that phone torches weee required to read the menu with our middle aged eyes! We chose the 7 course tasting menu which came quickly (perhaps a little too quickly as we would have preferred more time in between courses). Highlights were the wagu beef gyoza, Brussel sprout stir fry and snow crab roll. Also included miso cod and edame. Our kids had more regular sushi rolls (avocado, cucumber) and prawn tempura. All delicious. On the pricey side for us but thought the food was worth it

Dinner at Katsuya in Hollywood

By Bill821 |

My wife and my daughter and I had dinner at Katsuya on a Wednesday night. We just arrived in Los Angeles after travelling all day and we were not very hungry so the Tapas style was perfect for us. The prices were very reasonable and the food and drinks were delicious!

Recommended by my Japanese guests

By Andrew R |

When Japanese family recommend a Japanese restaurant it speaks volumes! It’s even better when they take care of ordering. Wide selection of Japanese dishes that were executed perfectly. Good quality seafood and deliciously tender wagyu beef. Our dining experience included edamame, shishito peppers, baked crab hand rolls, Sushi, sashimi, albacore and wagyu. In-house DJ provided background tunes (sometimes a bit loud) and the crowd was varied; we rocked in dressed very casual after a day of sightseeing, not a match for other punters dressed to the nines. US$258 was reasonable given the amount of food we ordered, the quality and the efficient and fast service

Omg amazing!!!

By Nphotographer22 |

So my mother and I planned this amazing night for my father being his birthday. The chef was on point everything out reminded us of back home is was wonderful. Thank you. Environment was beautiful however the sound was as bit much

High Prices for Super-High Quality and great environment

By Larry F |

Let's face it: Most sushi places range from dives to functional from a design stand-point. The room, unlike the Katsuya on San Vicente in Brentwood, was pleasantly quiet. Katsuya restaurants are designed by Phillipe Stark and are striking, clean, and wonderfully lit. But what's a pretty face with nothing more? This was more! The fish was over-the-top great. Our sashimi was the best we've had, well-cut, very fresh, beautifully presented in a dedicated, ice-filled box. The negri was also great, though we are fans of slightly warm rice with a dash of wasabi. The conventional rolls were... conventional: good fish, okay rice. The specialty roll we had - Katsuya Roll - was great; very little rice wrapped around bits of four fish surrounded by cucumber and soy paper. In a word, great. Prices are high, so I would go here for the out-of-the-ordinary items on the menu.

Loved it! Amazing quality!

By Minal |

I loved the food here, from the salads to the sushi, food was lovely! Staff was friendly and food arrived quickly. Highly recommeneded!

Love this place

By VasilMart |

Oka last time very surprise me positive, went to Oka last night and had an early table at 8 pm but it still had atmosphere and by 7pm, the place was full. Food was delicious, sushi maki particularly and very good tuna tartare. Excellent cocktails too and very good service. Would definitely recommend if in the area.

Special Place for a Special Occasion

By Stuart M |

Was going to the Pantages Theater for my wife's Birthday and wanted a restaurant close by, Well it's about 1/2 block away from the theater. Parked across the street and didn't have to deal with multiple parking lots ,traffic etc, Windows to the restaurant are covered so you cannot see in. We went in an were immediately greeted. Waited at the bar for 5 minutes before being seated. Beautifully decorated with Japanese artwork in a very modern setting. Probably the best hand rolls we have ever had! Kept going back for more. Very extensive menu from three different kitchens. The shredded chicken salad was amazing, you won't be disappointed. We ordered the Katsuya Special roll which was just OK , you can get similar cucumber rolls at any good sushi restaurant so don't bother with it. We enjoyed the rice with waygu beef very much. They pour a very nice cocktail. The food is great! This restaurant deserves it great reviews. Overall very satisfying experience. We look forward to going back!

Lovely

By Kelly A |

Great service and amazing food - it was a very pleasant surprise. We had the tasting menu, which included all their specialties (good value for money) !

the best Sushi Restaurant in Cal.

This classic Japanese Restaurant is a unique sushi restaurant . Forget all you ate or know about sushi , in Katsuya you'll enjoy something different .you will have delightful experience that you did not know !

Excellent Japanese Food and Atmosphere

By Tim M |

Consistently excellent food at a fair price for the overall quality. Both the sushi and cooked food are very tasty. I will visit here again and again.

Just Great! Loved it!

By gpeshee |

Great sushi and appetizers and the service was top notch... we sat outside on a nice day and it was very unexpected... DEF recommend this place to you! Maybe even take a walk around the shops when you are done!

Food didn’t disappoint

By Chaos Coordinator |

Just arrived into town and wandered in about 9pm on a Monday for a small bite.Hostess was welcoming and we decided to sit at the bar. Received great food and beverage service. The yellowtail, ceviche and wagu were delicious.

Still my favorite!

By Edalsworld |

Went there a lot when we lived in Hollywood about 10 years ago. Now we came back for a "revival" and it still is my favorite sushi. The rock shrimp tempura over spicy tuna. OMG. But simply everything is delicious. We went a bit late so it got a little uncomfortable when the staff started to clean up for the night - but that was our mistake... just don't go at 9.30pm on a week night... ;-)

Not sure what happened,.......

By Franz K |

Friday night peak time, Restaurant was half roped off with curtains. The table we were seated behind the host desk felt claustrophobic and crammed with the curtains. Food was good but that's about it. The vibe and atmosphere was lagging! Obviously not a LA Hot Spot anymore!

Delicious! Would eat here every night!

By 061790 |

Food is creative and delicious. Don't miss the brussel sprouts, crispy rice and spice tuna, amazing yuzu vinaigrette salad and amazing rolls. Fair prices, great service.

Much ado about nothing.

By DBrackett |

As a vegetarian, I can eat at any Japanese restaurant. The seaweed salad was bland, the miso soup salty and the tofu dish awful.

AMAZING FOOD AND SERVICE

By southjerseygirl70 |

This was absolutely the best sushi I have ever had. I was there with a large group who ordered 1 of almost everything on the menu. And it was all FABULOUS! You can't go wrong with anything. Especially loved the fried corn sushi roll and the brussel sprouts. Service was just as good as the food!

Love it!

By Sisiwkl |

The food is amazing. Cocktail is on point. Sashimi is fresh, sushi is well present. Service is amazing. Mario helped out most of the dish that we selected. He’s very good at his job, and he’s funny.

Service too Long, menu is not special

By La Stronza Di TripAd |

Service takes too Long and the menu doesn’t offer enough options. Waiters didn’t give attention at the clients. Food is nothing special..

Amazing Experience

By Raj M |

Loved it - the service was great. We had a great waitor and he was very helpful with my parents who were vegetarian. Explained everything that can be done with the menu to suit their needs. Great meal - great service - would definitely recommend.

Yummy Japanese Food

By MaryGoh |

Went there with my colleague and fortunately we made a reservation as the restaurant is very full. Ate the sliced hokkaido scallop with special sauce with wasabi. Its fresh and very sweet. We also had the wagyu with the foie gras. Its heavenly as the marbled wagyu and foie gras just melt in our mouth. We also had the grilled yellowtail collar, the flesh is so oily, full of omega 3. We also love the miso cod. Its so heavenly too. We end our meal with a good feeling of crème brulee.

Wonderful

By Allan Stewart |

I have only recently been turned onto Japanese Restaurants. This one is excellent. I’m not an adventurous eater but everything was very tasty. Service good but not great. They ask you to stand in the lobby till your table is ready. We arrived exactly on time but still waited 15 minutes. I would expect a waitress/ waiter to offer drinks at this point but they don’t. There is a bar but it was full. It is expensive ie. $200 for two courses. 4 starters 1main 3 veg 3 drinks. Will definitely go back.

Cool Place

By Jamie344 |

Visited here on 12//7 as part of our trip to LA. Cool restaurant that has a DJ playing (something different and it’s not too loud). Service & Food were both good, not excellent. One observation would be to treat all customers the same. There was a table next to us that had the manager, chefs and various other staff visit them several times. Not sure who the person was but personally don’t think it’s great experience for other patrons when someone gets such blatant preferential treatment but suppose it’s LA!

Fantastic!!

By Chelsea C |

This is a really trendy sushi restaurant with some of the freshest fish I have ever experienced. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a fun and trendy sushi restaurant and are willing to blow some serious cash!! The sake list is extensive and the appetizers compliment the sushi perfectly. Definitely try it out!

Best sushi ever!

By sobeleg |

A wonderful experience for a group that enjoys sharing great food. The service was great and we throughly enjoyed ourselves. I will recommend the restaurant to others. I will return when I am in the area in December.

Fantastic sushi - and brussel sprouts

By Mvanting |

Went here with some colleagues, who been here before. We got the omakasse menu where the chef decides what to give us and it was a range of their signature dishes. Starting with some ceviche, Then the highlight of the meal !! Brussel sprout chips that was just SO yummy. Then a lot of other small dishes .- all good and the finale was 2 pieces of cake with icecream and fruit. The chocolate lava cake was really good, Winelist by the glass was great and service was good,. What is not too like - can only give it my best recommendation.

Rates #2 in Sushi LA for a reason!

By Vegasjoe57 |

Their signature roll, the Katsuya, was so good we got 2 orders of it; wrapped in shaved cucumber, the toothpicks holding it together made it very easy to eat...Had yellow fin tuna Jalapeno roll, and daughter had veggie tempura, veggie roll cut and we split the brussel sprouts...very delightful for 1st night in LA....

Japanese at it best!!!!

By Samuel M |

Great food!!!! The atmosphere was amazing, the sake selection is great too!! The staff is very friendly, the rice with waygu beef is unbelievable!!!

Fresh sushi

By Ranja |

We were on a business trip to LA and wanted to find a good sushi place. Went in to Katsuya and had to come back. Twice. It was so good. On the second time we were a big party of 15 and we got a nice area just for us. The service was great, helpful, quick & friendly. Most importantly the food was exceptional and I would love to come back here again when in LA. Highly recommend the place!

First Sushi in LA

By Glacier Country |

This place was relatively close to our hotel (Roosevelt) and was recommended by a couple of locals so we opted to try it out. Food was good, service was good, decor was good. The only downside was that it was very loud. Maybe they have other seating areas for more intimate dinners?

Brace to the rescue... AMAZING Service!!!

By Anabel319 |

I had made a reservation in advance because I know how dinner hour gets in Hollywood, and I highly recommend you do the same. Upon arriving we were greeted and immediately seated which was great. We were served water and then we were forgotten and sat there waiting patiently for 20 minutes. Brace was nice enough to come over, greet us, and took us on as his own table since our server never arrived. Brace was very attentive and had a great personality, I was delighted to have him as our server. The flavor of the food itself is delicious, but the portion size is a lot smaller than most sushi restaurants. It's a pretty pricey place, but it's defiantly a trendy place with a happening atmosphere. They had a DJ playing music, which I though was pretty cool.

Taste like a Chain Restaurant!

By E9N20 |

Great cocktail "Katsuya Fresh", nice host and waiter. But overall, the food is average in every way. I really thought this would be more than that. We made the rez because we were going to the Pantages. The restaurant was practically 10% filled, that should have been a clue. So, if your limited with time and a average connoisseur, Katsuya is for you. To be clear, the food was not bad just average in selection, presentation and taste. I'll stick with Sugar Fish and Itacho.

Eating in the dark

By Sofia K |

The restaurant was way too dark, I know about mood lighting, but this was over the top! Menu was not self explanatory for us Europeans. How much is “normal” to order? And the food was…. Ok. Nothing to write home about. I’ve had same kind of food in less expensive restaurants. So over all, Service: very good Ambiance: to dark/not enough lighting Food: nothing more than ok

Wonderful atmosphere

By Audrey C |

Delicious meal! Great service! We had a romantic diner here and the atmosphere was great. The sushi chef skills are incredible! It is worth the detour! Be sure to make a reservation!

Good food and had took the option to sit outdoors. Items my friends and I shared: Yellowtail Jalapeño Crispy Brussels Sprouts Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice (x2) Dry Aged New York Strip Crispy & Crunchy Slaw (contains chicken) we also shared a bottle of sake (served chilled), but i can't recall the name.

What happened to Katsuya?

Chaotic service, we ordered starters, wagyu beef, black cod with some rice, sushis and sashimis and desserts. Of course, they tell you things arrive in no specific order but they started with... rice and did not understand why we wanted the rice with the main. The crispy rice spicy tuna that used to be amazing years ago were burned not crispy but really burned under the tuna And of course it was Very noisy I have not been here for years but will never come back

Expensive but worth the try!

By Trips2spice |

Went there when we were on a vacation in Los Angeles. A great sophisticated place, for fine dining. Dimmed lights, quite atmosphere and curtains covering all the place, for you to have a great night out. It won't disappoint you, the food is great and the service was excellent. If you're a japanese cuisine fan and would love a fancy experience, Katsuya is the place to head to.

Great for pre theater fare

By Goodandtrue |

Went to Katsuya prior to seeing "Beautiful" at the Pantages in Hollywood. Food is inventive and very good. Service is prompt with a lot of folks pitching in to make sure you're out on time. The seating is not particularly comfortable, but for our purposes it didn't really matter. It's really noisey and loud, so you don't get to have intimate conversations. Their specialty drink menu looked terrific and I wish I could have tried a couple, but pre theater it's not particularly nice to get too tipsy. Our server Kyle recommended a nice small bottle of sake and that went very well with the food. Even though the menu was inventive and the food good I thought it was a tad overpriced. With the small bottle of sake, a few appetizers and two rolls, the bill was $170 including tip.

Terrible experience

By andymilesandpoints |

I have been to Katsuya years ago, and was great Service is terrible now, too noisy, food not good as before. You order a coke without ice, they bring it with ice. They forgot or gave my dish to somebody else. There are better places, Katsuya is not as before.

Amazing food, Amazing service

By Consuela H |

The service was amazing, and the food was the best Japanese food we've had in Los Angeles. Perfect for a date or a night out with friends.

Great food in great location

By Greig B |

Pre theatre drinks and food. Sushi and sashimi and a robata grill. Very well cooked and excellent service. One of the best meals I had in a recent trip to LA.

Tasty Japanese food in trendy restaurant

By livgrig |

Cool restaurant in the heart of Hollywood. If you want to treat yourself, leave your menu choices up to the friendly staff, who’ll order you a great cross section of the menu with some of your favourite ingredients. The wagyu egg rice was a standout dish. Expensive, and not necessarily better than any other really nice Japanese restaurant I’ve been to, but worth a trip all the same.

Post theatre dinner! Absolutely superb

By julesmoose2 |

Had a terrific dinner here after a show at Pantages..just a hop away...lovely bar, quiet relaxing atmosphere and excellent food and service..we enjoyed it very much, the sushi was great! In particularly the mushroom maki! You may find better food but for me this is a terrific restaurant in an excellent location! Highly recommend especially for a post theatre supper!

Great food

Nothing better before an evening at Pantages. Try the crab appetizer and the black cod. Amazingly tasteful

Disappointing Experience, Terrible sushi !

By harrymass |

My wife and I just recently moved to LA and are living right on Hollywood Boulevard , 2 minute away from Katsuya, and hoped that It could be our new to go Japanese Restaurant as we are both big sushi fans. The restaurant was busy as it was Saturday and could only get a table at 10.30 pm which is totally understandable . The service seemed rushed as soon as we sat down it took us 10 minute to grab the attention of someone to order drinks, we first ordered sparkling water and spicy edamame , the water arrived relatively quickly . We then ordered cold sake and took another 10 minutes to be served, which when receiving it was not cold enough. For diner , we ordered a selection of nigiri and Maki roll , was keen on ordering sashimi but each order came in 6 pieces ( slices ) unusual as most of not all Japanese restaurant I have been to such as Nobu, Zuma and many others , sashimi are traditionally Served in 3. Was planning to order main courses and dessert after our sushi as we always do. When we we served the sushi the Soya Sauce jug on the table was empty and had to ask the staff for more soya which took another 5 minutes ( edamame still not served at this point ) The quality of our sushi was shockingly disappointing. The rice was over cooked and mushy, the ingredients felt no fresh and the taste was barely noticeable. I understand that I can not expect to be served the same level of quality of sushi I enjoyed recently in Japan or as mentioned in a Nobu or Zuma but could at least be served decent Sushi considering the reputation Katsuya have established the self over the years and what they are charging. We finally decided to not even order our mains and deserts due to the disappointing first hour and just asked for the bill. We had be overall experience in a Yo sushi type of restaurant you can find anywhere . I will NOT recommend this Restaurant to anyone. You gotta step up your game!

Authentic Food, Super Atmosphere

By Passionate-Owners |

Visited for the first time and was very impressed. This is a busy, noises but very trendy restaurant that serves great fresh Japanese food. The bar is very busy and full of beautiful people, the menu offers a mix of traditional and new style Japanese cuisine. The crab rolls and chicken balls Yakitori style were excellent, so impressed with the unique style Brussel sprouts salad dish (I think flash fried or baked) and the beef short rib and braised fish in miso was great. Nice wines by the glass, service atypical LA, meaning theatrical but professional. Will return.

Pricy, but quality food

By TravelRobs |

This restaurant has some sensational meal combinations. Most entrees are expensive, but the food is more than worth it. Highly recommended!

Great Japanese food in center of Hollywood

By jan v |

Very good Sushi/Japanese foodd right in the middle of Hollywood. Great service. Excellent wine list, not to mention the selection of fine sakes. Not cheap

A little pricey but very good food!

By DLLu |

I would usually try the chef's tasting menu but it list didn't capture me that day. We end up ordering different dishes to make up a meal. It is a little pricey when compared to what I get from top degustation restaurants in Australia and the current AUD to USD exchange rate didn't help but I did enjoy my meal a lot. First highlight of the night. I am a huge fan of chawan mushi. Although it was a tiny egg size portion of chawan mushi we received at Katsuya, the flavour and texture is brilliant with beautiful truffles flavouring thru it. Ignore the price tag and size and try this if you are a lover of chawan mushi. My highlight is the wagyu beef with foie gras. Tender as wagyu beef should be and good piece of foie gras that you can taste the juicy fatty flavours in the bite. The creamy shrimps is always a winner. Goyza was made exactly how it is supposed to traditionally in a circle, joint somewhat. The spicy tuna crispy rice is an interesting fusion dish that has some kick to it is worth a try too. Doing the traditional Jap dessert, I finished with the mochi ice cream - green tea and red bean flavoured ice cream. Both are good and as they should taste. There is also a good selection of sake and plum wine for alcohol lovers.

SUSHI!!!! MMMMMMMM

Best Sushi in Hollywood, bar none!!! I would go into detail but I am willing to try anything when it comes to sushi!

OMG

By Judi S |

I think this was the best Japanese meal I have ever had. We were 4, had a mix of cooked and raw food and all was wonderful. Do not miss the spicy tuna w/ crispy rice and the gyoza. Lots o vibe, not quiet, but part of the fun.

I dream about the brussel sprouts

By Roadtripqueen2013 |

We stopped here before a show at the Pantages. Very good food and service. I will go back again just to have the crispy brussel sprouts! Yum!

Really enjoyable dinner!

By Love Food Eat More |

Really enjoyed our meal here during a short visit to LA. The staff were incredibly accommodating - one of us is in a wheelchair and they arranged for us to use a side entrance (there are steps to the front) menu was beautiful, we opted for some from the a la carte and some from the specials. Nothing dissappointed us. The only reason we didnt give 5 stars was due to the insane air con, we know that the USA love some air con but it was so chilly (we were appropriately dressed) we finished up our drinks to get back to the warm :) would certainly revisit though

Best Sushi

By Kanjana L |

We were waiting almost an hour but worth it. Excellent service and quality is superb. I would recommend this restaurant and Will definitely go back again.

Excellent Japan fusion and great value

By SnakeDoc45 |

We went here in Sep 2017 I had the tasting menu and everything was delicious. Standouts were the tuna on crispy rice, the Miso Cod, and the foie gras on wagyu fillet of beef. The last one is amazing. Most of the menu is very good or excellent, and the tasting menu is fairly priced at $75. Our server was Mario, who was excellent. But for the other staff, sometimes it took a while to clear a plate or wipe off some food on the table. So 5 stars for the food and 4 for the service.

Spectacular dinner in an upbeat atmosphere

By LAC000 |

First, I love the "small plates" type of dining where you have the opportunity to try lots of things. In this case, it was even better because the food was spectacular. I lived in Japan for 5 years, so I'm picky about my Japanese food; this place did not disappoint. I had the spicy tuna with crispy rice, crispy Brussel sprouts, maitake mushroom, and the miso black cod. They were all divine. There was a DJ, so the atmosphere was definitely upbeat, albeit loud. Since I was dining solo that wasn't a problem for me. Because this restaurant was in a tourist area, you had people dressed in everything from a little black dress to shorts and a polo shirt. Service matched the food with my server offering lots of helpful suggestions.

Super!!

By mmoredi |

Amazing atmosphere, where beautiful people go. Soft lights, nice music. We tried the Omakase... just perfect!! I specially liked the great sake menú they have, and can not wait to eat again there because I enjoyed the wayu and the cod.

Delicious food

By Stacey S |

The sushi was great, the rock shrimp tempura was delish, and the cucumber salad was probably my favorite amazingly. Loved it.

Great Sushi

Went to this restaurant after seeing Rent at the Pantages. The bartender Howie was fabulous. The sushi was so fresh and yummy. It's a must visit restaurant.

Best Japanese Food

By Lin Yu |

Love love love this place, food is so amazing, service super friendly and great cocktails! I strongly recommend the omakase to get the full experience

Favorite Meal of My Trip

By DianeP |

First timer to LA and I love Japanese. This restaurant was recommended by a former employee. "Smith" made the experience even more enjoyable. They made most of the choices for us and kept the dishes coming. The black cod was amazing and I loved the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff it was completely different from the uptight unwelcome feeling you get in a lot of LA establishments.

Great food Choose other location.

By LMA2214 |

Staff was super kind. The fried rice was incredible, Yellowtail Hamachi and White Fish Sashimi all were great. Spicy Yellowtail Roll was great as well. The Crispy Rice was horrible. If I were to visit again would not visit this location but would go to the Brentwood location. The other location on Hollywood we visited was a bit shady.

So Good, Always a Win

By Chris M |

It's hard to go wrong at Katsuya. The sushi is highest quality, the service excellent, and the atmosphere is top notch. You will pay for the privilege it almost always worth it.

What a shame

By Ramie |

Food was mediocre and cold. Tried to (respectfully and politely) get a refund or a simple exchange for something else but was denied by the manager. Really horrible customer service. Hostess seemed a bit cold and nonchalant like she was irritated she had to be there, and even more irritated she had to deal with a customer issue. I understand the general theme of this restaurant is classy and sophisticated, maybe they think that means they can provide bad customer service. Well, you can, but you're going to get bad reviews. :-)

Cool spot with great food

By sivrei |

Cool spot with great service by the staff. Menu is great and my favorite dishes are chicken wings, popcorn shrimp, truffle sashimi - BUT the best dish of them all is the breadpudding(!!!!).

Dinner before Hamilton

By Wes W |

We parked at the public parking structure lot on Vine($13). Open street lots were charging $30. Back to Katsuya. My daughter said it is a Japanese chain restaurant. Walking in was another like I’d ever seen in Japanese restaurant. It looked upscale and nicely decorated. The food is very good. The presentation of the food is outstanding. My black sea bass was perfectly prepared. Excellent flavor and very moist. Service was excellent. Our server knew all the explanations for our questions about the sushi and sashimi. He was friendly and polite.

Great Wow Factor

By KatrinkaSD |

The interior design of this place is absolutely off the charts. Very impressive if that is your goal. Staff did not know their dishes as well as I would like, but Japanese cuisine is a specialty of mine. Nonetheless, I would expect a better response for the prices we were paying. Very L.A., with Tokyo in mind, but not deeply traditional if that is what you are looking for.

We hope dinner is better

By Janet L |

Service is unprofessional. Grabbing items across my chest, serving from the wrong side, refilling bottled and sparkling water to wrong people, was told out of pork belly halfway thru meal. Food presentation and taste great and saving grace.

SuperService&Quisine

By Michael M |

BlackCod Miso is amazing, loved the Brussel sprouts & not normally a fan, fantastically simple & elegant yellowtail sashimi, delicious crispy rice tuna & The Japanese wagyu A4 roboto grill beef perfectly prepared & portioned rich, tender & fabulously flavorful. Bread pudding was delicious desert compliment. The service & food / drink suggestions by Lorne were impeccable & fun.

Good, but not excellent.

By Bjørn Egil T |

We are novel to japaneese food, but wanted to try. Excellent service, speedy waiter, excellent wine and tried the sampler/tasting meny. Good but not excellent. We strongly dissagree the healthfee off 5%, so this was deducted off tips.

Delicious and pricey

By anitan434 |

We had an early dinner before a 6:30 pm Frozen performance at the Pantages. Great location for that, by the way. It's just diagonally across the street. We were seated within 5 minutes and greeted by a very professional and friendly waiter. The menu items we had were all delicious but small and expensive. The short ribs and the Brussel sprouts were the best - we got two orders of each for three people along with sushi and liquid nitrogen cheesecake for dessert. The low couches that comprised half our table were extremely low and difficult for my 55+ body to get out of.

Always Good Always Crowded

Sushi experience in LA

By elnchan2 |

My husband read some reviews saying you have to try sushi when in LA. So we decided on Katsuya. I think it has multiple locations. We ordered appetizers of edamame, crispy rice with tuna and the fried onions on albacore. We ordered the cucumber rolls, California rolls, sushi sampler and chicken teriyaki with rice. The food was really tasty and amazing! The price was steep side! Chicken teriyaki cost $18 and it was so small! A bit of oil on bottom of the plate. Chicken was delicious. But I would not order it again as it was too expensive for the portion size. Rolls come in 8 pieces. Restaurant was way too dark especially on the way to the washroom. There was a live DJ playing music. Nice atmosphere!

Amazing and Delicious!

By Natalie E |

The entire experience from beginning to end was beyond amazing! Delicious fresh sushi( must try the spicy tuna crispy rice), innovative choices, beautiful elegant atmosphere, good location, and among the best service you could get! Our server Sam went above and beyond to ensure we had the best experience, and always had a smile on his face, and really made our night so enjoyable. We will definitely become regulars here and tell everyone we know. Can’t recommend enough!

Prime location for pre dinner show.

By Richard S |

Prime location for pre dinner show or drinks for the Pantages Theater. Extremely convenient and worth the $20 valet fee. Restaurant was hip. Pricey but not over the top. Food quality was very good. Only limitation was the quasi unenthusiastic waitress who could have smiled once and made a few suggestions about the menu. For example we ordered a shrimp appetizer and a sushi roll which had the same shrimp as a good part of it. Would had been nice if she cared enough to mention it and maybe suggest something else. Anyway, we would go back and try it again, chalk it up to just one tired or uninspired waitress.

Delicious go-to

By Nicole G |

very nice setting with great food, good drinks. try the yellowtail sashimi with jalapeños! Make sure you get there early- gets pretty packed on Thursday nights.

Just average

By FarAway773171 |

I am not sure why this place has good ratings. The vibe is nice, good looking crowd, but the sushi is average at best. Ordered 5 rolls and other sushi, rice tastes like it was coked earlier in the day and just waiting to be rolled and the fish does not taste fresh. It’s not bad but definitely not fresh. One of my friends described it by saying the fish tastes like it’s one day old. Simply just average when it comes to sushi.

Pretty good Japanese

By AntM_WorldExplorer |

Went for dinner, had a great meal. This place says on the menu its 'Japanese for the American palette' and it shows. Food was good, as was the service. Lots of old favorites here and nothing too adventurous. Sashimi was very fresh and the sushi rice was pretty good too. Overall a good night out.

Wonderful Food in a Beautiful, Modern Setting

By Jackson K |

My friend and I ate well for well over two hours. Not a bad dish was served but the service was not in the same class as the food or the decor. The Noh masks in the restroom were amazing! Lots of bodies moving around but little real attention. Still, worth a visit.

Have the crispy rice!

By Rohan N |

Was recommended this place by a friend having eaten at Nobu Malibu the day before and having had a very good meal I didn’t expect much of this place. How wrong I was! We went for the tasting menu after having the watermelon cocktail which was great and a sign for things to come. The food was stunning and overshadowed the meal from the night before, every bite was a pleasure – in particular the crispy rice which was exquisite. I ended up going back the next day before my flight and had the happy hour at the bar which is an extremely reasonable way to try out some of the dishes (including the crispy rice) most dishes under $10!

Good ambience:)

By Tomek W |

Nice sushi restaurant in Hollywood. The interiors and atmosphere very elegant and nice. Great place for dinner. Menu with sushi also interesting. I can recommend miso soup was amazing! We took also rainbow roll and lobster roll. I have ate better bat was ok. Staff very helpfull and quick. Total impression very good. Worth to go there

Very Good Overall

By blytheanderic |

Having visited other locations, I found this location to be a better choice. It was loud and swanky...about what you would expect for Hollywood and Vine.

Perfect for Pre-Theatre, Solid

By LuvtoSafari |

We were going to see Hamilton at the Pantages and wanted to eat close by. This is 1 block away, a big restaurant and solid value. The sashimi appetizers are way overpriced for the tiny portion size. But the sushi and rolls are solid for the price. The Yellowtail Kama is a great bargain and well prepared. Total for 4 of us was $156, no alcohol though. Service was good and good came up fast. This is not traditional sushi. For that, I go to Sushi Sasabune, Aburiya Raku or Sugarfish. But loved it for the convenience.

Not a Sushi Type of Person

By 385eileenz |

Took my daughter and granddaughter for a birthday dinner before seeing Cabaret at the Pantages. Parking for $18.00 included valet parking for the 90 minutes at the restaurant and the 3 hrs for the show. Waited only 8 minutes for the car and valet was polite. I must start by saying it smelled fishy when entering the restaurant and I had always heard that fresh fish has no odor so I was a bit leery from the get go. Got used to the smell after about 10 mins. and my glass of wine came! We were given a nice booth along the wall opposite the sushi bar/prep area and liked the location as the majority of tables are in the middle of the restaurant and not very private. Service was excellent with only twice having to ask for our waitress moments after she had left for a forgotten item that we forgot to ask for. Otherwise she was most attentive and only became less so as the restaurant became very crowded and she had more table to attend to. Appetizers - Edamame - ordered salted but saw no salt nor tasted it and had to ask for some salt to add. When first asking for it to be added by them, was told it would constitute another order to be charged for so she brought a dish of salt. Rock shrimp for my granddaughter was delicious - bite sized lightly crispy shrimp covered completely with what seemed to be like a creamy french dressing but very tasty and not spicy. Panko crusted chicked breast with tiny shredded veggies inside (no taste) rolled and cut into 7 pieces with a dipping sauce. My Salmon was served with the cherry heirloom tomatoes sauce on the side as requested. Fish cooked perfectly as requested med to well done. Granddaughters thinly sliced ahi tuna with crispy onions good but not spectacular. Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna* was a disappointment to her as she had ordered it in Vegas at Katsuya and said this was not as good as what she expected. She ate only one of the three pieces. Tasting it myself it seemed close to the taste she gave me of a piece when ordering it at the Westfield Mall in Woodland Hills for 1/3 the price. Knowing it was their birthdays, staff brought out two small plates each with a single cut in half Mochi (ice cream covered in a gooey covering about one teaspoon full only) with 2-3 half pieces of strawberry, raspberry and blackberry with a pretty leaf. A lit candle for each to blow out. Hostesses were smiling and gracious, servers were great. Wine list for individual glasses limited but the Reisling and Chardoney wineries were names I recognized. Guess since I am not a Sushi type of person, I was surprised at the prices for the three dishes my 14 yr. old granddaughter ordered, each between $16.00-$17.00 each. However if you are a Sushi person, my granddaughter said Katsuya is the place to go. I wouldn't return unless going to another show in the future and wanting the ease in parking and ordering only a drink and maybe the rock shrimp appetizer.

Great...as expected!

By Irv L |

Went here before the theater. Have been at other Katsuya’s in the LA area, but this is the most elegant of all. If you’re looking for gourmet Japanese dining, this needs to be on your list. Everything we ordered was excellent, especially the black cod. Only downside was that everything arrived at once and I anticipated more of a tasting menu delivery. Service was excellent as were their reception people. Bit pricey, but commensurate with the neighborhood and ambiance. Worth it!

Love Katsuya Hate the Smokers

By Pamela |

As always, let's start with the good: 1. There are some really great hardworking servers here. One server in particular we love, I wish I knew her name. She has dark hair and is super sweet, she always remembers us and will even stop by to say Hi if we aren't in her section. 2. The food is good. The albacore with crispy onion, octopus, soft shell crap hand rolls, all super yummy. 3. They remodeled! Huge upgrade from the old space, much more modern, inviting and comfortable. Here's what sparked this unfavorable review: 1. An unintelligent person put two ashtrays on each side of the staircase leading directly into the restaurant. This causes 2 things to happen, it forces you to walk through people and their disgusting smoke to get into the restaurant. I find this to be incredibly rude, offensive and quite frankly disgusting. The second thing that happens is that the doors to the restaurant create a vacuum so every time someone goes in or out the restaurant sucks in that toxic cancer causing air. Sorry but I don't agree to be poisoned while I spend $200+ on dinner. 2. The hostess... they must not read notes on reservations because I specifically stated on our reservation "please give us the quietest possible table away from large parties and children". Simple. Fair. Large parties are typically obnoxious, drink too much and start shout talking and girls start squealing over nothing and it ruins the environment for everyone around them. Further, children have absolutely no business in this restaurant or any like it. For the love of god, get a sitter...you chose to have that child, we didn't. Anyway, 1/2 way into our meal (we had the perfect table) they pushed the 4 tables next to us together and GASP put a high chair at the end closest to us. We moved tables immediately but our new table fell victim to the smoke vacuum issue. We finished our food, didn't eat dessert and are now 45 minutes early for our movie. No manager bothered to come over which is even more offensive because we eat there frequently. So there it is, draw your own conclusions 👀💯 The photo is of the ashtrays in front of the door, you can't tell in the pic but the dude has a cig in his left hand that he terrorized us with on the way in. Disgusting.

LOVE LOVE LOVE

By nkamenetsky |

I've been here 4 times in the past 6 weeks. This restaurant is fantastic. The food is always incredible & has great flavor. The fish is super fresh, and never tastes fishy. Happy hour is awesome! Best dishes: - Crispy rice with spicy tuna - Crispy corn roll (such a weird combo, but AMAZING) - Crab hand roll - Wagyu beef with rice - Salmon lemon roll - Hawaiian bread pudding (if you have to get any dessert...get this one. covered in caramel & ice cream & cinnamon...SO flavorful & delicious). If you're going for an authentic sushi experience - this is definitely not the place. If you're looking for delicious food, great cocktails, and unique flavor combos, you will love it.

Fantastic Sushi/Sashimi!!

By Richard K |

We were going to the Avalon Hollywood for an event, and went here for dinner. Katsuya has fantastic Sushi/Sashimi!! We got there with reservations and spotted the sushi bar (love those, so sat there). So fun! We started with the Crispy Rice/Spicy Tuna and Salmon Sashimi. Both were excellent. Then saw them make a Katsuya roll (spicy tuna and rice inside a thinly sliced layer of cucumber! SO good) We then sampled our way thru a bunch of other tasty goodies!! Want to go back already!!

Best food

By JS |

Hugeeee selection to choose from! The crispy rice and tuna is the best thing in the world, ESPECIALLY from Katsuya. If you aren’t a massive fan of seafood, there is a bunch of other things to eat there; the teriyaki bowl is phenomenal! Would soooo recommend to everyone!

Excellent sushi and cocktails and great service!

By painthorsegirl |

Very conveniently located a block away from the Pantages theatre, we really enjoyed our dinner here. The service, from the front desk to our server, Shelly, was outstanding, very cheerful and attentive, despite the restaurant being full. I loved the watermelon and cucumber mojito. The gyoza was very good, the sushi was excellent, and everything was served promptly. All in all, highly recommended.

The best !

By Michal M |

The ambience is amazing. The restaurant is designed by Philip Stark. They had a great DJ ( though the music was a little too Lou’s . Best if you don’t want to talk with other). The sushi was amazingly good. Take the lobster roll, it’s their best!

Average

By GuidoKarp |

My guests were my best friends wife and her son - my godchild - and they had never been to Glendale so I really wanted us to love the place. We really did. Sadly, there was no love in the place. Everything was so average - even the sushi. I went for the Lobster dynamite - and when I look at the photos like the one I attach, I was thrilled. Sadly, mine did not remotely look like this but like a baby version with a lot of mushrooms minus the lobster. Then, I had to see the bathroom. They explained the way via the elevater - a filthy hallway with no signs - you would rather think of an (unhealthy) production area than have any guest roaming for the bathroom. When my friend needed to see the girls room I guided her - so awkward was the way. Later, we learned there is a staircase way which is nice. Chances that I would again are small, possibly I'd try the Hollywood one to see what the bragging is all about.

100 % Quality food and friendly service

By Vanny T |

We ordered a couple of different starters recommended by our lovley waitress and all of them were lush!! For the main course , we got a couple of mixed sushi platterns and the quality of the sushi was as good as it gets. Pricy but worth it!

Sushi...Sushi....Sushi!

By Theo B |

One of the best places I've had sushi - which I don't eat that often but appreciate when I do - is at Katsuya. On the historic corner of Hollywood and Vine, the restaurant (which has been re-done and re-worked over the years I've gone there), still provides one of the best selections of sashimi and sushi in L.A....and then some! On this particular night, I also tried their panko-crusted chicken (absolutely ravishing!) as well as their pork belly (OMG! the flavor in this dish is killer!) but it was they made my usual "go to" sushi - the spicy tuna roll and the spicy hamachi (yellowtail) roll - so very tasty. This night spot (it's a stone's throw from the Pantages Theater) is also a pit stop for some very known Hollywood celebs (I've seen Donald Sutherland and Apl.de.ap [from the Black Eyed Peas] and Mark Dacascos ["Iron Chef America"]) and more have their fill of this well-prepared food.

Perfect!

By Kiri S |

Perfect! The food is excellent. I love Japanese cuisine! I also liked the atmosphere and service. I will definitely come here again.

Great place for Sushi in Hollywood

By Mode John R |

Place looks really nice and put together. I sat by the bar and had the Chirashi set. It was beautifully presented (my main looked like a piece of art), there was a large mound of edamame, the sashimi was really fresh and tasted great. I got a Kirin and beer was served really cold (always a good sign that the restaurant knows what it's doing). Service was friendly and prompt. While it was a bit pricey, I think the food and place made it worth it, and as such good value.

It's not just a sleek facade - it's actually good food.

By Danielle M |

My husband and I live near Hollywood and Highland and don't get to Hollywood and Vine as often as we would like. We were excited to try Katsuya as we were seeing a show at the nearby Pantages and also love Japanese food/sushi. I hail from Chicago, and the restaurant reminded me very much of a the "modern," sleek busy restaurants in Chicago and hold more of that city vibe and less of an "LA" vibe (I know that probably doesn't make much sense). The inside of Katsuya is beautifully designed but also minimalistic in its contemporary aesthetic while still being welcoming. We were one of the first tables sat for dinner, but they started filling up quite fast but it was by not too packed (but it was also a Monday). Our server was friendly and answered every question we had pleasantly. He was kind, and I would happily sit at his table again. The food was absolutely delicious. I have been vegetarian for about 30 years and vegan for 20. I was so happy to see that they had vegan offerings on the menu, and I would definitely return to eat there again. I highly recommend whether you live in Hollywood like we do or are visiting, Katsuya is a great contemporary Japanese restaurant and so happy to have found yet another gem in our neighborhood.

Good late night Dinner

By Kwan_Nyom |

Stopped in for a late night dinner near 10pm and the place was still very busy, we were given seats at the Sushi Bar. One note is that there was a DJ and the music can be loud. We sampled a range of dishes, Lobster Special Roll, Spicy Tuna, Gyoza and Sushi Combination. Each was good, freshly made and tasty, and the service was fast even though they were busy.

Remarkable! This team NAILED IT!

Big Big Shout Out to Chef David and Cameron (our server). Dinner was amazing. Taste, textures, and presentations were all 10/10. Spicy Tuna, Crispy Crunchy Slaw, Albacore w/ Crispy Shallots It was all just so freaking good we filled up before we even got to the Hot stuff! Will definitely return. Great job team, keep up the good work.

Pricey but it’s worth!

Overpriced and overrated...

My friend insisted to visit this place and we did. We should have not. We wanted to reserve for 8pm, they said 7pm and not a minute late. We changed our plans and arrived to the restaurant at 6.45pm and we were seated right on time: at 8pm!!! We had to wait for 1h15 in the most stupid setting and watched other people getting anxious and nervous about their tables as well. After you wait more than an hour, you'd expect something worth it. Far from it. And guess what; half of the tables in the dining hall were empty and stayed empty. Plain stupid. The dinner was at best mediocre and very expensive for the quality. I think this is an LA thing to wait in lines to get into places that is not worth anything. If you like real Japanese food, this is not the place. This is where you want to eat with Hollywood characters around. Thanks for the worst ever toro sashimi as well... The chu-toro in the mix was good, but not that good, so we've ordered some ho-toro paying the outrageous price. Well; chu-toro was fattier than ho-toro. Go figure! In the end, I wasted an evening in LA...

Not up to par

Went here last night before going to the theater. Before I continue I must say if you do go here ask for Shelly to be your server. Always a smile, always looking after her tables. The usuals like spicy tuna over crispy rice were great as well as the rock shrimp. The Brussel sprouts were the best I have had. I enjoy my sushi & felt that the sushi here was just ok.Very little flavor which for the price is not acceptable. I have been here before but felt like last night fell short of the quality I have come to enjoy at Katsuya.

Katsu-ya is absolutely the best sushi

Happened almost by accident, we realized that luck had guided us by the hand. Excellence courtesy grace and grace have emphasized a wonderful dinner... no doubt

Great sushi hotspot on Hollywood Blvd

I eat sushi almost everywhere I travel for business and often sit at the sushi bar because, quite simply, I like to watch the preparation. The sushi chefs were meticulous in their craft and were not just cranking out plates - they took care in both examining the components they were assembling and the overall plating presentation. A+ There was a vibrant ambiance about the place that suggested it was a place where people of importance/fame frequent. I've no doubt there were some there during my visit, though none introduced themselves to me ;-). I had the Yellow Tail with Jalapeño appetizer and the Omakase Sushi platter. Both were excellent - fresh seafood and refreshing tastes.

Possibilities Missed

Was there a couple months ago, and while they have potential, they lack the onsite leadership to make it happen. The serving staff are in desperate need of leadership. The food is average and edible, however the miscommunication makes the experience an ordeal.

Good dining spot near the Pantages

By JTfromSoCal |

We had tickets to watch Wicked and wanted to dine somewhere nearby. We ended up at Katsuya. The atmosphere of the restaurant is more trendy rather than a traditional Japanese restaurant. The food options did not disappoint. We ordered beef short ribs, a bento box that came with sashimi, miso soup and bread pudding for dessert. Food was tasty, sashimi was fresh. Service was great and efficient. Would consider dining there again.

Just so so

The food was just ok nothing special . There was not very much on the menu. We felt the price was too high for what you get. Next time we are going to try a different restrautant .

Met up with cousins who live in L.A., and wanted us to experience ' classic hollywood'. turns out we were staying one block away at The Redbury- perfect little walk to this hip nightspot. The food was sublime. We ordered wonderful appetizers and sushi, as well as prepared fish dinners. Flavors were expertly blended highly recommend

Disappointing ....

We went to Katsuya to celebrate my son’s birthday. From sitting down to paying the bill it was 40 mins. We really felt rushed and given there were many empty tables seemed strange. The food was decent as was the service but for a meal that was meant to be savored and enjoyed sadly it was not.

Happy

We had tickets to a show at Pantages Theater, rezzis at Katsuya fore so a little early for LA dinner. Atmosphere is great, service was really good, food was tremendous. This is the perfect date place near the theaters.

Was surprised of the bad service and food wasn't that good ..the chicken teriyaki was so bad ..steak was normal and black cod was the only good thing they were so slow ..and brought main courses before salads and starters which was surprising..not recommended

Decent

I am honestly not a fan of raw/sushi food. My friends and I ordered the rock shrimp roll, the chicken teriyaki with rice and the crispy rice tuna. We were not too crazy about the food. I also ordered a Vitamin A cocktail which was tasty, but too sweet for me. I believe you definitely pay more for the ambience. It is a really nice venue. The menu was definitely something similar to Nobu.
