Vibrant restaurant with good sashimi

By Richard H |

I went to dinner with my son and his friend during a visit to LA. Restaurant was crowded and vibrant (people were having a good time). While we waited for our table, we stood by the bar area that was small and only had 4 seats. It was not very comfortable. When we sat, we found the service to be professional and attentive. Our sashimi was well-prepared and flavorful. Menu and drink prices were pricey but the dining experience was fun.

Love it

Katsuya is a great restaurant. The decor is nice so there is a great nightclub/lounge vibe in the restaurant. The sushi was delicious, especially the tuna on the crispy rice. Im hooked! Every time I go I have the cocktail with kiwi in it, it is not to be missed! It has been just as impressive each time I go. Enjoy!

The BEST sushi in the USA!

By seaajfc |

I have yet to find a better sushi restaurant anywhere. The service is excellent and their spicy Martini is to die for! Of course, the added benefit is that you will usually see or even sit next to someone famous.

Sushi Fix

Fresh sushi, fish collar, great decor & vibe. We always order too much food. Close to home & healthy.

Great food and atmosphere

By wrldwonder |

Really good sushi, creatively prepared and a rockin scene that is unmatched on the westside. Brentwood's only really great restaurant.

Excellent food and great cocktails

By GMaes |

We had a great diner at Katsuya. The bartender knows his job and the cocktails are great. Food wise you should try their Brussels sprouts dish, the sashimi and sushi are awesome. Service was impeccable even with the place completely packed.

Delicious

The food at this restaurant was amazing! All the rolls we tried were outstanding!

Still great

By Jadei G |

Took my family to Katsuya Sat.night. As always it gets very crowded. We asked for & were seated in the front room which I like better. While I have been here a lot it's been awhile. Our server was Kirby who without question was spot on with every suggestion. We have our regular favorites but there are a few new things on the menu. Her guidance made a good meal a great one. Always outstanding is the crispy rice with spicy tuna. While you can now get this a lot of places it is still supreme here.

Go to Place for sushi and scene!!!

Love to come here when I visit family in LA. The food is amazing, and the atmosphere is great!! Sometimes you may see some celebrities.

Never Disappoints

By Luxbizman |

Katsuya is a sushi staple in the LA area. I always go when I am in town and I always go to the Brentwood location. The Hollywood one is nice but it's a pain to deal with everything over there. Brentwood location has a more neighborhood feel to it. The fish is always great quality and taste. The waiters and waitresses are very well versed in the menu and can offer good advice if you need it. I would suggest reservations because it is normally full almost every night. Overall, it's one of the best sushi places in LA.

D-LISH! I cannot wait to go back.

By Sarah N |

We went for a very last night dinner. It was fantastic. the sushi was great. One of the best places that i have sushi lately. Also, their bread pudding dessert is fantastic. I am not a fan of their dessert but this was too good. We didn't have a chance to go back this trip but it will be on my list of must haves for when I return to LA for a visit.

Japanese with CA Soul

By Clark G |

After all these years, Katsuya still has it going on. Menu is not traditional Japanese, but the "purist", one can still order sashimi, and sushi. Edamame is served warm, which I guess is what they do in the USA, but everything else was amazing. Including our large fish order. The service was amazing, mostly due to the Service Manager Deborah G. If you are going to bring a group, have her in charge and everything will be perfect. Thanks to the entire restaurant, our group have a great time every time we go, which is monthly, forever.

Yum and Wow!

By PolychromGirl |

So wonderful! I am a Sushi Snob. I am super picky when it comes to the stuff. After a disappointing experience at Nobu in Malibu the night before, we headed to Katsuya with some good friends, and with mouths that longed for the most excellent sushi. We found it!! Love, love, love the Shishito Peppers oh so much, all of the sashimi dishes, spicy tuna!!!!! (the one with fried onions on top?) OMG!!!!!! Loved all of the rolls. Love, love, love the location...Hollywood stars right outside the doors(to me that is very exciting). Love, love, love the VERY cool atmosphere (check out the bathroom) Love, love, love the fact the it was a Sunday night and there were people there, but it did not feel overly crowded. I cannot really comment on the service , as I was enjoying the food and company so much. It must have been fine, bad service I would remember! Great space, great place. Fun and yum.

Don't let the noise stop you

By Chris_Gal |

First time at Katsuya. My impressions: neat place, great service, very good food, but it was loud. We attended with another couple for a Friday night dinner reservation - 8 pm. The restaurant was busy - good sign. I don't know what it was, but it was so loud that I found myself hanging over the table to hear our friends speak. We laughed about the noise on several occasions. It wasn't enough to ruin the dinner but we didn't hang around any extra at the end, which hurts only the restaurant. Amongst your order be sure to sample the sautéed Shishito peppers and the Wagyu Tobanyaki - yummy! I would definitely go back when in town again.

Stunning food, excellent service

By Larry R |

This restaurant has some of the most extraordinary food I’ve ever eaten. The seared tuna looked ordinary at first but after the first bite it became obvious this was not everyday seared tuna. The soft shelled crabs were extraordinary. The snow crab rolls were so amazing we ordered them again for dessert. Ditto for the octopus. Even the Edamame was special, with its own spicy sauce. Not only was the quality of the ingredients uniformly excellent, the sauces were all distinct and perfectly conceived for each fish, beef or veggie dish. No soy sauce necessary. This was Japanese food unlike any I’ve ever had before. The service was very California. Relaxed, but attentive and smart. This restaurant is one of the best Los Angeles has to offer...don’t miss it!

Great Food

By islascaribe |

The food here was just fantastic! The black cod entree was the best we have ever tasted. The sushi was very good as was the rock shrimp appetizer. The restaurant itself is very loud so its not a place where you can really enjoy a conversation, but the food makes a trip here worth it.

Very trendy people watching restaurant

By filomena f |

Great food, definitely a great people watching place on Saturday night! If anything we felt a bit rushed. They work out of 3 kitchens and the food comes out at different times, we were not finished with one plate the next one was there already. They should have a better system on spacing out the time. It was pricey, but worth it. Quality of food was great

Noisy +++

We were recommended this restaurant by a local shopkeeper so we thought we would give it a try. We booked for 8.30pm and arrived on time but our table was not ready. We were ushered to the bar and had to wait 25 minutes before our table was ready. The best thing about the night was the very friendly barman who made a great cocktail and was apologetic about our wait. The front desk staff were very nice but our waitress was dour and looked as though she hated her job. We both ordered separate appetisers and main courses. My husbands first course of shrimp came out. He enjoyed this but mine did not arrive. About 15 minutes later our main courses came out together. When enquiring about the whereabouts of my appetiser, I was told that as the food came from two separate kitchens, there was no order to what came out and when. I was very surprised by this -we eat out a lot and I have never encountered such nonsense. I was however unable to argue my point as the noise level was beyond deafening. I could not hear myself think. I could hardly hear my husband across the small table - if fact we skipped desert so we could escape. When I did finally get my appetiser - it was most underwhelming. Agadashi tofu is usually very tasty. This was bland and tasteless. My husband's lobster was also disappointing. Sorry but we will not be going back. The noise is beyond a joke. We are not old and cranky - quite the opposite. I felt sorry for the couple squished in next to us -obviously on a first date and couldn't talk or get to know one another.

Very Good but steeply priced

By Sjt64 |

I’ll start off by saying the restaurant had an appropriate decor (not understated or too lavish). The staff was first rate commensurate with what you’d expect from a restaurant with this caliber of food. The duck confit appetizer while $26 was the best bite of the evening. When asked, waiter recommended a terrific tasting sake. (I don’t remember which one). For entrees the sashimi sampler was excellent although some of the fish cuts were definitely sparse. In summary, without “going crazy”, the bill was still $200 for 2 of us which was definitely exorbitant given what was ordered. The meal itself was very good but for that $, I’d go somewhere else next time.

outstanding

By Michael B |

The food was great, the service was awesome, the interior simple and beautiful and the cocktails were great.

Best restaurant in Los, Angeles

By brittneydc413 |

Katsuya is a Japanese restaurant located in Brentwood. This is a very cool and hip place to eat because of the great atmosphere and the local celebrities that eat there. When I experienced Katsuya's food I was in the presence of Tom Hanks and Patrick Dempsey, both well known actors around the world. The food that was served to me was all different kinds of sushi that you could think of. It was all excellent. The flavors were so rich and full of flavor I could not stop eating. The service was also very good. Our table all got our food very fast and it was done beautifully. My uncle is actually the marketing adviser for the company that owns Katsuya. So he recommended it. This would be my first choice as a restaurant in Los Angeles.

Always a pleasure

By Marc S |

The perfectly prepared recipes of Chef Katsu-ya in Philippe Starck's gorgeous setting make this a must for every Los Angeles visit. It's energetic, so don't expect a quiet dining experience, and make sure to pace your waiter at times by spreading out your orders if you don't want to be rushed through your meal, as this kitchen can be fast at times.

This location is the best

By Nate L |

I eat here a lot. It literally is always good. The service sometimes will struggle a tiny bit if the restaurant is super busy but it is usually great. You'll want to make a reservation on weekend nights for a table but you can almost always get away with showing up with 2 or 3 people and sitting at the sushi bar or robata bar (which I enjoy anyways). Spicy Tuna on Crispy rice is a classic to get you started, creamy rock shrimp, brussel sprouts and the corn crunch roll are also some of our go-to favorites.

The chefs add to the experience

By goldmareese |

It always makes for a great night out when you have not only good food, but entertainment. My wife and I were pleased with not only the service, but how fun it was to watch them prepare the food in front of us.

A great night in LA

By FromParisToLA |

We had two recommendations to try out Katsuya Brentwood during our visit to LA and because of mixed reviews here decided to go and form our own opinion. We LOVED it! We didn't reserve and turned up at peak on Friday 30th (7.30pm) and were sat at the sushi bar. Next time we'll reserve in advance for a table. The staff are very polite and couldn't do enough to please. Hot towels offered before dining, we skipped the Dine LA week menu and instead went through 5-6 courses, including crispy soft shell crab, salmon sashimi with cavier (heaven!), crab and avocado, crispy sea bass, lobster tempura, tuna... Was it expensive? Absolutely, coming in just under $250, but we were not skimping on choice and wine! I would recommend counting on about $150 for two. This is an attractive place, with attractive people and stars-a-plenty. If you want to take your love to a great place in LA, then look no further.

Not impressed

By Shazzminderr S |

Took my daughter for an early birthday dinner to Katsuya. The place was packed (it was a Thursday night) and very loud (it is a popular place after all). Disappointment came in the shape of half hazardously prepared basic sushi plates. I guess they forgot the sushi should be a treat for the eyes and the mouth. Our orders of their basic sushi came out as if I had gone to the supermarket and got them. (Pic attached). Not appetizing for the eyes at all. And it was not that amazing for the mouth either. Now, if I had this same sushi at a third rate resturant, it would have been OK, but at Katsuya??!! Now, my dad use to always say that you judge a resturant's kitchen by the way they kept their bathroom. I wished I had check the bathroom before I ordered. Again, for a resturant of Katsuya's level, it was surprisingly NOT clean (pics attached). I saw one of the managers and showed him pics I had taken of the sushi and the restroom. He was very apologetic and took the price of the basic sushis off our bill, but I wasn't there for free sushi, I was there to have an awesome experience but was disappointed. Now, the appetizers were good. We had the soft shell crab, crispy rice w spicy tuna (we orders two as we both love it), and yellow tail sashimi w jalapeño. The miso marinated black cod was excellent. Better than Nobu and much better than zuma. Not too much sauce. Just enough to enhance the flavor of the black cod without overwhelming our tastebuds. The kobe beef was good. But in my opinion, not at all worth the $70 price tag it had with it (pic attached) And as mentioned above, their regular sushi was very unappealing and their specialty sushi were nothing to write home (or here) about. All in all, very sad to have been disappointed by Katsuya.

MMM...Excellent Food and Service

By qhunnyb |

Came here during Dine LA we ordered the Dine LA menu and other items. We got the creamy rock shrimp appetizer (oh my gosh it's so heavenly), the rock shrimp roll (so scrumptious), sushi and (fish were excellent...super fresh), steak tobanyaki (titillating to the palette...love the mushrooms...great dish), and bread pudding (moist, just the right amount of sweetness, delicious!!!). Service was very attentive and friendly. Love the décor of the place...love the modern sink in the ladies loo....Great experience. Will be coming back.

Excellent sushi and great experience

By Travelier |

The staff were great. The sushi really hit the spot. Their specialities are worth a try and the cocktails 'hot the spot!' Staff were attentive and we had a really great evening

Not too fusion, but interesting take on traditional Japanese flavours

By Benedict_J |

The deep fried kale was delicious, just the right blend of crunch and savoury dressing. a couple of classics - crispy softshell crab and Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeno both done very well. Good assorted sashimi, fine fresh, but not memorable and a nice bit of Wagyu beef.

An evening of delight and disappointment.

By Guy GD |

If food is all you come for, it remains as fabulous as I've experienced on prior visits. There is a succulence to Katsuya seafood that seems elusive at other restuarants. The sashimi sampler was solid, as were Spider, Blue Crab and BSC rolls. The appetizer of crispy rice with spicy tuna was so good we ended up ordering two. If you believe there is more to a meal than the food, you might be disappointed. A caliber of wine depends on when it is bottled. Whent the years aren't specified you literally don't know how good or not the wines are you're drinking. For a restaurant of Katsuya's quality this is not acceptable. And while you expect restaurants to handsomely mark up their wines, the prices were tantamount to robbery. I price checked several bottles through my Corkz app and the mark-up on retail was 300%. (and retail itself is marked up 100%). Stick to wines by the glass, which are reasonable, in comparison. When a party of two is put at a four- top right by the front door - the worst table in the restaurant - it's a bad way to treat a patron with a reservation and shows poor judgment. The soy sauce pot was empty on the table and one of the mixing bowls was missing. A restaurant shows its metal when it can maintain excellent standards even when it is busy. Katsuya did not. 5 stars for food, 1 for the wine and seating. Result: mediocrity that could so easily been avoided. A Starck property should do better.

Best sushi ever!!

By Katie R |

This place is amazing. We went there more than a year ago and I still crave it. We're headed back to Cali in August and I hope we'll get the chance to eat here again!!!

Overrated and overpriced nouveau Japanese

By Andre P |

Let's start with the positives. The service is absolutely phenomenal. Very attentive waiters and bartenders who were eager to please. The ambiance is chill. A big, dimly lit room with a wooden, simplicity-driven decor to go with the Japanese theme. Really underwhelming and plain. The food was decidedly mediocre and expensive. Though we did drink alcohol, a price tab of $800 for 4 people is a bit much, considering the food was slightly above average but not as great as the food you can get at Nobu or Zuma. Small food portions don't help Katsuya's case either. In short, the place is overpriced and overrated. For food, you can go to places at 10% of the price. For ambiance, the likes of Nobu and Zuma offer a better experience with a more upscale clientele.

Best sushi I have ever had.... Nobu who?

Not cheap but worth every cent. Go hungry and order the specials. Can't ait for an excusevto go back

Bang for Your Buck Dining Experience

By AidaBM2015 |

Katsuya in Brentwood is the best alternative to Nobu. The excellent taste and quality of the food, and the good price point will make you want to return. We had the Goldberg roll which was for a limited time only, and it didn't disappoint. Scrumptious!! I would have given Katsuya a 5-star rating, but for two things: (1) The drinks were a tad too sour for my taste, but still good. (2) If only this location was right on the beach...!

Special occasion dining at its best

By DC5Jen |

Excellent, diverse menu of sushi rolls and other Japanese dishes. The chicken teriyaki and grilled meat items are terrific as well. Don’t pass on dessert, particularly the chocolate cake. The prices are on the more expensive side, but worth every bite.

Asian specialties

By CatherineJade |

Excellent menu with Asian dishes. The teriyaki salmon was good with miso soup and salade to start. The juices are original. Loved the mochi balls for dessert especially the mango ones.

Ups and Downs

By Laurie B |

The food and drink were delicious and well-prepared. The service friendly and efficient. The appetizers came out at significantly different times with a vague explanation about coming from two different kitchens which was odd and a bit awkward. My biggest complaints are how LOUD it was in there...my husband and I thought we should just text each other...and having a $200 dining experience while sitting on a plastic chair.

From bad to...amazing

By marieny524 |

I recently dine at Katsuya in Brentwood and the manager and team deserve a five-star review for outstanding service. The night started out disastrously. My two friends and I had a reservation for dinner and waited an hour to be seated. The restaurant was clearly very overbooked - there were crowds of people everywhere waiting for a table. The hostess sent us to the bar to wait, and never checked on us or updated us on our wait time. We had to ask twice about when we would be seated, and finally after an hour, we had to point out to the hostess staff that a table that would fit our party of three was clearly available. While we waited, we had seen other parties of three or four that came in after us get seated before us. When we finally moved from our spot at the bar to our table, a table we had found ourselves, no one came to get us. No one helped us with our drinks. It was pitiful, probably the worst service I have ever experienced at any high-end restaurant. We asked to speak to the manager after being seated, as we weren't happy. He came over right away and explained the restaurant had overbooked and was well aware of its shortcomings. We pressed further and asked him for some sort of compensation because we felt waiting over an hour with a reservation - with absolutely no updates or concern from the hostess stand - was just not right. He promptly swept up our bar bill and said that this was only the first of many ways we would be more than satisfied by the night's end. Well, he was right! The manager and wait staff at Katsuya completely corrected the restaurant's wrongs. Our food, from appetizer to dessert, was brought out promptly. We enjoyed everything we ordered, from their famous tuna and crispy rice roll to the lobster and black cod entrees. We had a lovely dinner. Even my (relatively inexpensive) glass of pinot noir was excellent! When we received our bill at the end of the meal, we almost fell over in shock. Katsuya had comp'ed our appetizers, dessert and drinks. I haven't paid so little for a nice sushi dinner in... a long time. Katsuya, YOU DID GOOD! The service we experienced for the first hour or so was subpar, and you more than made up for it. Many restaurants experience glitches - long wait times, undercooked food, etc., but I have never had a negative experience turn into a such a positive one the way I did tonight. We are SO HAPPY with the way management listened to our complaint and made sure we had a great time at the restaurant. Exactly how a good restaurant should take care of its clientele. In the words of Shakespeare, "all's well that ends well" for three friends looking to have a nice dinner and some girl time on the Westside. Thank you Katsuya, especially the manager, for doing what's right and for making our night great in the end.

Good Food, High Prices, Get a Reservation

By BeachMax |

Brenwood Location & Studio City are best. Get a reservation for dinner. Fusion/ Asian/ Sushi => good drinks (get the Grapfruit Martini/Comso drink). Must orders: Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeno; Baked Crab Handroll; Miso Black Cod; SSC Roll + whatever that spicey tuna with pepper on top of crispy rice is called. Valet after 7:30 - or you just drive in circles looking for parking. Great people watching. Forgot to mention: $$$$ EXPENSIVE => you can get cheaper elsewhere of equal quality - but the package (food/ service/ design/ people) is worth it.

Best Japanese Food out of Japan

By Stefano M |

I have dined at Katsuya a couple if nights ago thanks to the recommendations given by our hotel in Santa Monica, the Viceroy, it was the first night in LA, we has just landed a few hours before and wanted to spend a dinner out to more easily get rid of jet lag and I have to say it was the best chooce to go to Katsuya, we had a great Japanese food, the best California rolls I ever ate out of Japan where I have also been to years ago, I and the rest of the family had different dishes and they all were delicious, service super efficient, beautiful people around, all in all one of my best "Japanese" experiences ever, I stringly recommend ti gi....ah I was forgetting to say that the bill was not cheap but perfectly matching the fine dining we enjoyed, no complaints !

Delicious Sushi

By Melissa G |

The food is very good and once you get service you will be happy. The reason I gave it only four stars is that the wait time to be seated is bad. Often an hour or so. Even tried reservations and still had to wait 25 minutes.

Perfect spot for those not in the mood for only sushi/sashimi

By keyser_soosie |

4.5, but deserves to be rounded up. I've walked by Katsuya countless times, each time telling myself I need to check it out. Reviews were always a mixed bag. Some say it wasn't worth the cost, just another trendy Japanese spot on the west side, and others rave about it. We made reservations b/c we noticed that it is always busy here. Based on the reviews, if you have a later reservation, you can still wait for quite some time. So we made ours fairly early. Our waiter was fantastic and well informed. My husband and I went with the Katsuya tasting menu since it was our first visit and we wanted to try a little bit of everything. I was impressed with almost every dish. I think Katsuya is the perfect spot to go to if you're not looking for just straight up sushi and sashimi. It has enough variety to keep everyone happy. I also loved the hot sake. Yum! The downsides? Mainly the ambiance. The space is lovely and not too cramped, but it gets incredibly loud inside. It may be a more suitable lunch spot for me. Parking is street and valet. Metered spots available on both sides of San Vicente.

Amazing Service -- Fresh Fish -- Great

By Joan K |

We've been several times -- last Saturday -- not too crowded -- not sure why -- but it was great for us -- our server was attentive and fun -- the food was wonderful. The brussel sprout appetizer was unique and delicious; the Katsuya role light and fresh; the ceviche perfect. My kids LOVED the crunch role. My husband said the sashimi platter was amazing. Desserts are also wonderful here -- the bread pudding and chocolate lava cake are two of our favorites. Enjoy!

Great Food with awesome service

By Todbld |

Had a client lunch here, the service and food was awesome. Order from the specials on the menu, will not disappoint.

Awesome signature dishes with frequent local celebrity sightings!!!

By VisionaryFineArtist |

I have been here countless times (15+), and luv their signature dishes! Consistently crowded, hip, great service, and you always spot local celebrities eating sushi here. Awesome shaved black truffle over red snapper sashimi, spicy albacore sashimi with crispy onion, crispy rice tuna - definitely my top 3 favorites!!! Lobster dynamite, yellow tail sushi, baked crab handroll, creamy rock shrimp, miso black cod, sunset roll, rainbow rolls are also delicious - worth mentioning. Be prepared, as it can get pricey, but worth the treat. This place is about quality, not quantity. Also, fabulous happy hour sushi specials (including crispy rice tuna and creamy Rick shrimp) at the bar on Mon - Fri, 5-7pm. Valet and street parking, watch meters and posted signs.

Best ever!

By Jade G |

Brought my daughter here for her 20th birthday and it was amazing! Friendly staff, awesome cocktails, and melt in your mouth food. Well worth the $. We will come back next time we are in LA.

Asparagus on robata juicy and fat but two pieces cut into 4 doesn't slice it. Whole fish which was on special was amazing. Prepped on robata. Yellowtail and red snapper delish. Loved everything fish came with - seaweed, mushrooms, green onions. Belly was perfect as well - not too overpowering in the fatty department. Wine selection good. Def one of the better katsuya locations and close to nobu though nobu slightly in the lead in my opinion

More than Perfect

By Mazen A |

Had one of our best meal in LA at this place. The food, taste, service, and quality was world class. This is by far one of the best Sushi places I have been to. Must have any time in LA

Very cool interior, great and different food

By M T |

I love the atmosphere with the big striking photos on the walls of geisha facial closeups (dramatic eyes, lips). It was very busy, though only a Wednesday night, so it was noisy and the service was a little slow. I would recommend it, and would love to go back.

Good food, good vibe, good service.... what else can I ask for?!!!

By rphmama |

My husband and i dined here last night with another couple. I like this place because I don't have to go all the way to Hollywood to experience that vibe. The restaurant's swanky design makes you feel like you are in Miami! But most of all, I realy love the food and I savor every bite from the amzing yellow tail sashimi with jalapeno to the rock shrimp tempura to the crunchy spicy tuna. yum!!! They have a great drink menu and although I don't normally drink, I always get one of their signature drinks. I tried this martini with Jalapeno. realy tasty . My friend had the watermelon and cucumber mojito and that was great too. We ended our meal with creme brule and chocolate soufle (or a cake like it). i was buzzed after the first drink and didnt look at the name!! both were great. The staff was professional but very friendly. overall, another good experience here. will come back soon;-)

good sushi!

By shaberry |

Good sushi and atmosphere. If you're in the area and in the mood to try a new sushi place, totally check this place out.

Good vibe, good food, great service

By GFK88 |

Bustling restaurant with a rather interesting crowd. Food was really good, Sake well selected and sommelier knowledgable. Caring and attentive service.

A great spot for sushi / Japanese fusion

By Bill O |

There are a few of these restaurants around LA, personally I like the one in Hollywood near the Pantages Theater and at LA Live near the Staples Center. They are all quality and have excellent grade sushi.

Quality Sushi

By Angela |

As always excellent service...we did not have a reservation, but were able to sit at the sushi bar without a wait. The sushi is always fresh and savory, but a little disappointed in the sashimi platter because cuts of the fish were much smaller than I have had in the past.

Consistently delicious

By ktitone |

The sushi here is fantastic! The service is great- providing recommendations throughout the meal. The drinks were tasty- I loved the cucumber martinis!

Worth Every Penny

By deeann622 |

Just returned from entertaining a friend visiting from Vegas we thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Katsuya. I've eaten once before, but didn't remember much of previous experience. You definitely need reservations for this place. Its was a Tuesday evening and it was packed. I was lucky and was able to find street parking as I was pulling up...SCORE. Our waiter was very courteous and knowledgable about the food. We ordered the Katsuya tasting menu for $65pp. It features all of Katsuya's signature dishes and it did not disappoint. I felt for the amount of food and the quality, it was definitely worth every penny. Its a must do if you are in the area.

Quick lunch

By malibuirishmike |

Business lunch. Edamame and sushi peppers to start followed by a selection of rolls. All were fine, perhaps even slightly better than that, but nothing was memorable in any way. Service was pleasant as was the outdoor seating.

You pay for the ambiance

By Trisha L |

Great scene and wonderful service. The food is good but definitely pricey for what you get. There are some amazing sushi spots in LA that serve great quality for a cheap rate. Katsuya is a place to go to be surrounded by the beautiful city of LA. You are paying for the location and the ambiance of the restaurant. Nevertheless... good food, great service, trendy ambiance, great location, but a bit pricey for sushi.

Yummy meal!

By bloomcrew |

Had a fun dinner with our family of 9 at this popular place. Even with a reservation, it took quite a bit longer to be seated. Good people watching during the wait. Our LA family has spotted numerous stars while dining here. We ordered about a dozen items for our table and everything was fresh and delicious. Loved the Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna, the baked crab hand rolls, and the Rock Shrimp Tuna on Spicy Tuna Roll. The prices are higher than most sushi restaurants we have been to, but you are paying for the creativity of the menu, the beautiful surroundings, and the great vibe of the place. Worth it for a special meal!

Katsuya or "Kiddie-suya"??

By Travel4bourne |

Always loved Katsuya - Brentwood for its great food and ambience....but now it's "Kiddie-suya". On Sunday nights, it's filled with loud children trying to talk above the din while their parents chat with the other adults, all ignoring their under 10 children. While we were there, 17 tables had small children. Katsuya or "Kiddie-suya" appears to be the new "Sunday dinner place for grammar school kids and parents", so unless you're heading there with your kids in tow, head somewhere else with your business associates or friends for dinner.

Nice spot, good fish, but a bit pricey.

By lqdassets |

You'll get good, fresh sashimi at this Brentwood establishment, but be prepared to pay a premium. The menu offers many creative dishes and everything is well prepared. I didn't find any one particular dish that I could rave about, but have no complaints about the quality of the food. Nice atmosphere and attentive service.

Never had a bad meal at this Katsuya. The sashimi sampler plate is a great value at $35, and the creamy rock shrimp, tuna in Japanese salsa, and crab mozzarella are go-to orders. Robata veggies are a good value as well (bacon wrapped tomatoes, zucchini, and shitake mushrooms are all excellent). Unlike the Hollywood Blvd location this restaurant only have a few booths, some of the larger tables have privacy, but the section right behind the robata bar has different (all plastic) chairs and the tables are uncomfortably close together. A seat at the robata bar itslef is a better alternative, and fun to watch the chefs at work!

Yuck

By AngelAwakened |

Trendy place with a wait staff that does not seem trained for a service industry and less than mediocre food.

Sushi

By Dollphin824 |

The sushi here is top notch, but like all sushi, the servings are small and it takes a lot to get reasonably full. Plus it's pricey. That said, you will be happy with the quality of your meal.

Cool Place

By Bob S |

Very nice spot for food and people watching. Food is a bit on the pricey side , but excellent quality. Place has a very cool vibe with table seating and seating by sushi bar and grill. Valet parking.

The place to be seen, but don't go for the food!

By Carol C |

We ate at this restaurant as a group of 5. We decided to keep things simple and order the $50 set menu - the food was a disappointment - not authentic Japanese at all - average sushi. And we do not believe the set menu offered value for money. There is also a pecking order for dining guests - the beautiful and famous get a rousing welcome from the chefs in the kitchen, those not so interesting diners, are given a less enthusiastic 'wooh'. Also, the celebs are offered moist towels when they sat down, sadly we were not. Go there to see how many celebrities you can spot- and for the drinks - not so much for the food.

Chic Japanese in Brentwood

By JulioGM |

The Brentwood branch of the worldwide Katsuya brand, famous for its traditional and cutting-edge sushi and state-of-the-art Japanese cuisine, has a swanky decor by Philippe Starck. With a sushi bar, regular bar, a patio and two dining rooms, one lined with booths outfitted with sofa-like banquettes, this restaurant is perfect for all groups, including families with little kids who love eating sushi with their fingers. Judging from the crowds on a weeknight, it is a neighborhood favorite. Forget finding parking on the street; go with valet parking.

Divine sushi in Brentwood

By Shelby S |

Set amidst the clean lines of Philippe Starck's impressive and cozy design, the atmosphere is warm and inviting and the food is unreal. Katsuya takes the perfect steps toward blending traditional sushi elements and adds their own special twist that results in a delicious flavor sensation, definately inspiring repeat visits!

Fun, Great Service, Not always the best sushi

By TOMHUDSON33 |

I love the design and setup here. Staff is always attentive and knowledgeable. The spicy tuna on crispy rice is sometimes inconsistent -- at times crispy, at times not.

Incredible food!

By joandodge |

I met a good friend for lunch. She picked Katsuya because it's one of her favorites. I can certainly see why. We shared the brussel sprouts and one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten, crispy rice with spicy tuna. Incomparable! I had a small piece of salmon and some asparagus and my friend had a small portion of beef and some delicious corn. We shared a bottle of Proseco. The food at Katsuya is simply wonderful. We enjoyed excellent service as well. Highly recommended.

Vegan Sushi Choices Available

By JasperMarks |

My wife and I and our extended family recent had dinner at Katsuya. We have eaten here a couple of times before. One of the reasons we enjoy this restaurant is that they have enough vegan options to hold our attention and our palate. They have vegan sushi options in addition to roasted vege options. They even offer a beautiful fruit plate for dessert. My biggest complaint is that this place gets really, really loud. We found ourselves having to shout throughout most of the meal. But, I would still go back again.

Hi Fashion Celebrity Sushi

By Mike_Adventure |

Visit Katsuya for the sushi and the rolls--stay for the view--leave with dent in your wallet. But the experience and presentation is some of the best in the west. Katsuya delights with flavor and art--their spicy tuna on rice cake is amazing! The sashimi tuna and yellow tail is perfection, and the Rainbow Rolls are outstanding. The sites are cool--Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Cuba Gooding Jr. and don't forget Janet Jackson--to name a few--on any given night. Rest assured you'll get just as good food and service as they will. But you'll know what to order! The service is not star struck--although you might be. But the treat is the front room and the scene is quintessential Hollywood.

Delightful, tasteful restaurant

By BSAPhilly |

Went with my niece who raved about the sushi. Not being a sushi eater, I ordered tempura and it too was perfect: light batter, crisp flavorful vegetables, fresh delicious shrimp. The waitstaff couldn't have been nicer, from greeting to seating to careful but not overwhelming service. Decor is subtle but stunning. A little pricy, but a delightful evening.

Excellent. Excellent. Excellent

By LA-Ang |

As always Katsuya was most excellent. I love the crispy tuna &spicy rice, albacore with crispy onions and lots of sake!

I normally wouldn't like a place like this, but . . .

By Ned41 |

My wife and I chose the establishment for it's location and menu, well aware that it is pricey and has a reputation for being consciously trendy. We really found none of that. The food was wonderful, the service outstanding, and the prices (for what we ordered) fair. It is crowded, dark, and loud, but we were accommodated quickly and served most efficiently. Katsuya was everything we wanted for this particular evening and close to our hotel

Robata closed at 8.00 (I believe) and we got there at 7.15 on a Sunday. Service good. Food always good (ceviche amazing). Street parking? Forget it. Valet available but I would Uber/lyft. Ran out of collar. They have daily robata specials.

Nice place to go with friends...

By Gurume_Kodoku |

I went to this restaurant with my boss because of some food event in LA. The restaurant was nice and cozy. Staff were friendly and nice. The food, however, is just not as great as what I thought it would be. We orders rolls and skewers and some sushi. The food looks great and tasty, just from appearance I would give it 99 out 100. But the taste is, unfortunately, not the best sushi I've try. I would dine at somewhere else and then come to this restaurant for chatting while order only, some dishes and drinks.

Loud space, but great food

By mrsirin |

We had dinner here on Valentine's Day, and really enjoyed it. Our booth insulated us a bit from the loud music, which otherwise would have made conversation difficult. The food is excellent, and the "beautiful people" scene is very LA. Nice sake selection.

Fantastic

By Sgirl7218 |

Went for a girls night and had a blast. Although there was only 2 of us and are bill was 300 it didn't matter. The experience was worth the money. The service, the food and the ambiance were all first class.

Stylish and tasty

By Eyal12 |

Stylish and posh, with great food. Sushi was outstanding, every single roll of piece of fish that was served was fresh, expertly handled and yummy. The Miso marinated black cod stood out from the rest, it was so delicate but bold and tasty. We also really liked the ceviche, and the rainbow roll, but really everything was great. Desserts were also something to write home about.

good food; nice atmosphere

By sally88 |

the food is good; sushi and sashimi is fresh; the best is the black cod and spicy salmon on crispy rice. Wait staff very nice. It's best to go when they are not too busy because then service is not as good; but the times we've gone it's been very good service. Prices are high but its worth it though they do have a $25 prix fixe menu that comes with miso soup, salad and teriyaki chicken. Definitely have to try it if you've never gone.

Unusual and delicious

By 33map |

Although the restaurant is noisy and trendy the food is outstanding. The service could not have been better. We were there with people who knew how to order and that was certainly helpful. Dishes are like nothing we have ever eaten at any Japanese restaurant. They are interesting fusion concept that really works. Every dish is a masterpiece and both beautiful and delicious. Be warned that this is a very expensive experience.

Not as good anymore

By Jennifer J |

I came here expecting a lot more than I actually received. The hostess was rude, the service was mediocre and it took way too long to receive our food. The food was not what it used to be either. Too bad, I really used to like this place.

All good things come to an end

By Jleahkaylor |

I have been here many times and have enjoyed the food. Last night I couldn't wait to leave. The food was mediocre. The service was terrible and listening to the staff talk about the customers is outrageous. They forget that the reason that they make money is because of the patrons. I know so can be overwhelming but no reason to mimic and poke fun at your customers. I won't be dining here again

Never go again

By cknori |

I am over 70 years old. I expected to have a nice Japanese atmosphere at Katsuya, because name of restaurant is Japanese name, but so noisy, foods are more for younger people, and our server doesn't have any basic Japanese food knowledge. I saw many people, mostly non-Japanese and younger people, enjoying at Katsuya. Sorry to say but I can't recommend Katsuya to Japanese elderly people who likes authentic Japanese food.

Over Rated - Over Priced - Bad Service. Would not go back.

Great sushi

By vincent g |

Great sushi. Went to the one by the Staples center. Had a great time with great service. Pricey, but you get what you paid for.

Outstanding food and can cater to dietary needs

By robw17 |

Ourtanding food and a wide range of options. Makes a concerted effort to adjust to dietary needs and modify dishes accordingly

I have not been here in over a year, but it was great in 2017.

By Gary E |

This is a charming and must see special restaruant. Expensive of course, but well worth the food and experience. Sit in the back, or in one of their small rooms if you can. The selection of food is second to none and I wished I lived nearby. But alas, I have to wait to visit my daughter to eat here. I recommend without reservation, but please get a reservation!!!

Delicious!

By asiae2013 |

We visited this location during DineLA Week and were not disappointed! The food and service were phenomenal and we look forward to returning.

Great sushi, great atmosphere, HIGH PRICES

By Andrew R |

If you're going to Katsuya in Brentwood you know you're going to get good people watching, good food, and high prices. The food was delicious, the Crispy Rock Shrimp appetizer was awesome, the Crispy Tuna is great, and many of the cuts of sushi are top notch. They have a nice selection of sake's to try and the beer selection is typical sushi fare.

Great food and vibe

By WestLAFamily |

We eat at Katsuya Brentwood with some regularity. The vibe is fun - an active scene without being too loud and obnoxious. Some good Hollywood sighting opportunities as well. The food is excellent. Sushi and rolls are solid, esp the spicy tuna on crispy rice. Other favorites include the best crispy brussels sprouts - really delicious - as well as the creamy rock shrimp (kids love that one), the chinese chicken salad, and the miso glazed cod. All in all this is one of our favorite spots in all LA for a good family meal.

Avoid unless you want food poisoning.

By designer10California |

Katsuya is a slick, loud, pretentious "Hollywood" sushi restaurant -- meaning the food quality and service are not a priority. We went last week with friends visiting from out of town who wanted to see some local LA "scenery." We all seriously regretted our decision after we became violently ill from the sushi. We ordered the yellowtail carpaccio, albacore sashimi, crab hand rolls, spicy tuna, as well as a large sushi platter (uni, amaebi, toro, etc...). The thing about Katsuya that always concerned me is that they have about 20 busboys running around delivering the food. Your waiter will take your order, but you will have at least three different busboys dropping off your food at random times. I always felt like there were 6 different people making my food and at least as many handling it on the way to the table. You will inevitably be brought food that you didn't order or else see your food being taken to another table and then rerouted. This has happened every single time we have eaten there. (and we have eaten there at least a dozen times) The other thing about Katsuya that is always extremely annoying is that despite having a reservation, you will always have to wait and will almost always be offered the worst table in the house. (This is even if you call, talk to the hostess, and specifically request a table or mention that it is a special occasion). Katsuya tries to be too cool for school -- unless you're a Kardashian, you will be treated like a second class citizen. Despite knowing this, we have continued to go back because of its convenient westside location (almost always with out-of-towners who have read about the cool Phillipe Starck design in some magazine or another) and we always took the restaurant with a grain of salt, but serving rotten raw fish is not acceptable. Save yourself a trip to the ER and eat elsewhere. Also, the manager is a complete dunderhead. We've spoken to him twice -- once after they messed up our reservation for a special occasion and again after our food poisoning incident and both times, he was utterly useless. (think: blank stare followed by long pauses followed by no solution to the problem) When we asked to speak to his boss, he said we could write to Sam Nazarian. Again, totally unhelpful. With management like that, no wonder they think they can get away with murder.

Great Japanese Restaurant at great value

By LAVISH888 |

We were greeted by the Manager who was very friendly and had a big smile for everyone. The restaurant was typically Starck and goes well with the cuisine. The food was great and the lunchtime specials were good value. Desert was wonderful too. The service was friendly and efficient and we highly recommend this Katsuya.

So Fresh

By dvsdeedee |

Katsuya is always such a special treat when I visit family in Brentwood. Great atmosphere and the freshest sushi. I loved the Shishito peppers and could have stopped right there but we also ordered the salmon sashimi with caviar, crispy rice with spicy tuna, and the rock shrimp tempura roll. Delicious!

!!Yes!!

By artpulse |

I had an amazing dinner here and can't wait to come back. The rolls were so fresh and creative. Our waiter Luke was spot on with service! Don't miss the Brussels sprouts! Pure crack! Im missing it as I type this!

Wonderful sushi and robata

By Steven K |

Ambiance at Katsuya is cool and chic. Service on our visit was friendly and prompt. But, ambiance and service are no substitutes for tasty fare, and we thoroughly enjoyed the fare served here. We started with tuna tartar, succulent cubes of marinated fish served on crisp fried nori. It was delightful. Next up was a seaweed salad - nothing unusual, just simple and good. From the robata menu, we picked an eggplant robata and an octopus. The eggplant was cute little circles served 3 on on a skewer; they were delicious. The octopus was the highlight of the evening for us - dramatic presentation and excellent flavors. We finished with a sushi roll, the Katsuya special roll, and hamachi served sashimi style. For drinks, my wife had a lychee-tini and I had a Katsuya special old-fashioned. I also had sake with my meal. We felt our whole meal was excellent and a good value - not inexpensive, but not unreasonable and well worth the price. I would definitely come back on a future trip to LA.

Feels so natural to eat sushi in LA

By parkerw2014 |

Located on a busy street, but a spacious and open restaurant serves good sushi. Particularly liked the spicy tuna on crispy rice and the tuna, avacado and mandarin orange sushi. Edamame tasted particularly good.

Great Food!! Orders get lost... Chaotic

Went for Dinner, ordered Food which never came, orders get lost. After 1 hour waiting, we left. the little food which we got was great quality. you guys need to improve. so sorry. waiter was great.

Decent food, Grossly Overpriced, and Horrible Service

By Abraham W |

This is a popular Asian restaurant for young people clearly spending large amounts of money they never earned. Also wealthy local families that don't care and can bring in their young kids in PJs. Tables near door are freezing; no light to see menu that is way overpriced. Shashimi platter was good, but had very little on it. Tea was $6 for a cup and took me 4 requests to get any sugar. Spider roll I ordered came 45 minutes after the rest of the order, and they just don't care.

Decent food, disinterested wait staff, very loud

By Diane W |

We recently had dinner here on a busy Friday night. The restaurant has a lot of energy but unfortunately that translated into an extremely loud meal. It was difficult to hear the waitress, as well as the other people at the table. The menu has a lot of options and variety. We tried a number of different things. I’d definitely recommend the creamy rock shrimp and the crispy brussels sprouts. I know many people rave about the crispy rice with spicy tuna but it didn’t have enough flavor for us (although the mix of crisp, creamy and chewy was great). I thought the Wagyu Tobanyaki was too salty. The Miso Marinated Black Cod was delicate and delicious. The desserts were also good. Our waitress was not very friendly or engaging. Other employees were quick to remove dirty plates but made no attempt to take away dishes that were not right at the edge of the table. Perhaps due to its location, the chance to see famous faces (we sat next to an actress from a very popular TV show), and the steady stream of customers, they don’t rely on the service to keep customers coming back.

Very Good Sushi

By pmurphy2016 |

First visit at this location, smaller than the W. Hollywood, but the same good food & excellent service. Beautiful space and lighting, atmosphere, etc........ Had the sushi items which were all excellent. Did not try the robata which actually looked closed. Overall, highly recommended but quite expensive.

OMG !!! Heaven, Class, Hi-Style FOOD- and Lots of Beautiful People

For Really Fine, Delicate, Fresh, Creative Sushi, and a long list of other Japanese favorites- this place and it's other locations set All the standards and will definitely beat your expectations- it is expensive- and it is worth it!

AMAZING Food and Service

By Allyvitali986 |

I first visited Katsuya in 2007 when they first opened and even after 4 years they know what their doing. The food was fantastic. If you are up for something different and delicious try the crab and mozzarella appetizer - the combination of flavor really compliments one another. I recently had the sea bass lunch and it was fabulous as well. Not only is the food out of this world but the service was great too.

Amazing food, amazing atmosphere and great people watching

By Sheryl B |

This is my favorite restaurant to bring out-of-town guests to as it is so "LA." The signature dishes at Katsuya are simply not to be missed: crispy tuna, yellowtail with jalapeno and crab roll are all to die for. Save room for dessert though and be sure to ask them to bring you the "dessert plate assortment." While it's not on the menu, it's an incredible assortment of the best ever desserts. By the end, you will be so full you'll feel like you've died and gone to heaven!

Nice place, good food but pricey

By Max B |

The place is nice and clean. The food is very good but you can find many other places in the city where you eat as well as here at half the price

Always good but expensive

By Hugo V |

I visited Katsuya Restaurants several times and was always pleased. No waiting time, good seating, excellent food, friendly waiters. A little bit expensive, as most of the japanese restaurants in LA. Service was quick, no hurry what we liked. We will certainly return

Good but Roka (London) is better!

By Freddie_M72 |

Good food - however Roka (London) is better! Sake was good, as were the lychee Martinis’s....but if you’re ever in London, go to Roka as the sushi rolls are tastier.

Excellent!

By TandTSwitzerland |

Located in Brentwood, nice neighbourhood. Very stylish, trendy and modern decor. There are 2 dining rooms, one large (very nice decor but a bit noisy) and a smaller, also noisy but a bit less. Very friendly staff! Good chic crowd. Excellent Starters, in particular the chicken salad and the brussel sprouts were outstanding! Another excellent dish is the crispy rice with spicy tuna. The Sushi plates were a bit less outstanding, just OK - I recommend to focus on starter dishes, they really are excellent! Good choice of Sake and wine. For me a great place for excellent modern Japanese Food with a good crowd (much better than in the Hollywood branch where the crowd is much less chic and the Food also less good).

Good

I go to Katsuya about once a month. Fabulous food. Friendly Staff. Some of the time it has been awful loud others not. It depends. I love it though.

Great Sushi, Fantastic Scene

By Beth B |

This place is a great "trendy" spot for great food, great people watching, and fabulous drinks. The sushi is amazing, the rice and fish are some of the freshest ever. The drink choices are amazing, including ingredients like refreshing watermelon cucumber and spicy jalapeno. The back room is decorated a lot like the evil queen in snow white with funky mirrors and seating areas. The bathrooms have holograms. This place is expensive, but if you are looking for an "LA" sushi place on the west side, this is the spot!

"I'll Be Back"

By Moe8-99 |

My wife & I have eaten here twice in the past month & it was excellent both times. Although not as traditional as a lot of sushi bars, the special sushi creations are to die for. Recommended are the Baked Crab Handroll; Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna; & Spicy Albacore Sashimi with Crispy Onion. The regular sushi is also fresh & very good. We had Seared Jumbo Scallops; Sea Urchin; Fresh Water Eel, & yellowtail… all excellent. Also try something from the Robata bar. The Corn w/ Butter, Shiitake Mushroom w/ Ginger, & Tenderloin Steak w/ Onion sauce were all excellent. However the Marinated Beef Short Ribs was to die for, & a bargain at $6. The ambiance is beautiful. Sit on the luxurious white leather couches, & enjoy one of their excellent specialty beverages.

We love fusion!

By gma56 |

My wife and I ate there on Thursday, and liked it so much, we went again on Friday. The food was excellent across the board on both days. We opted (both times) for small plates, so that we could sample as many favors and textures as possible. The ceviche was the best dish, but I'd also very highly recommend the yellowtail, the skirt steak, the tuna and soft shell crab. Trust the waitstaff for suggestions. The drink menu was also very interesting, my wife recommends The Burning Mandarin, just the right amount of heat without overpowering you taste buds. It's not cheap, but the food was certainly worth the price. I would have given a "5" for service, but Friday's waiter was not as good as Thursday's. The decor in the main room was warm, and conducive to dinner conversation. The "Dragon Room" didn't have the same vibe. But wasn't horrible.

This sushi far from the norm!!!

By MyPalate |

Excellent, creative sushi dishes that are far from the norm of traditional rolls. You must try baked crab hand roll, spicy Tina crunchy rice and seared tuna with crispy onions. Amazing flavor! If you are a sushi lover, but are tired of all the rice and traditional rolls, you will love it here! I've been to several locations. This wasn't my favorite location in terms of atmosphere, but the quality of food remains the same. Best sushi I have had anywhere!!!

Tasty and very creative

By Alan B |

Ate way too much but it was so good I couldn't stop. This is far and away the best spicy tuna on crispy rice around. Also had am assortment of shushi a marvelous baked crab roll, soft shell crab with crispy spinach, small plates of steak, artichokes and grilled avocado. Also a delicious roll of spicy tuna topped with popcorn shrimp. Good seating and beautiful decor. A bit pricey as you would expect.

This place gets 5 stars from me. Food is presented nice, flavor is excellent, ambience is excellent, and the chocolate lava mini bundt cake with raspberries is to die for!

Delicious !!

By Laury M |

How do I describe my experience last night in just a few words...? "Fantastic" would be one. "Delicious" would be another. "Grateful" to have finally gone to a restaurant in Hollywood and felt like the staff (Jesse our waiter in particular) genuinely cared about our experience. The entire staff worked together as a team in what seemed to be an incredibly busy Saturday night. Although the food was pricey we were happy to pay it and will DEFINITELY return. If you're looking for an energetic restaurant with amazing food, go to Katsuya in Hollywood. The crispy rice with spicy tuna will blow your mind, the Burning Man-Darine cocktail will rock your socks, and Jesse will make sure you leave wanting to come back. Did I mention the Crispy Rice with spicy tuna!!!!!

Good for "trendy" scene/atmostphere. Not your "traditional" sushi place but they have a few good dishes such as the crispy rice w/ spicy tuna, creamy rock shrimp tempura and black cod.
