Disappointing service

By Adam G |

We took another couple here today for brunch. We told them how great the food and service has always been. We arrived a little bit before our friends and got a table. Our server coldly greeted us and took our drink order. We ordered our drinks and an order of classic queso as an appetizer. She brought our drinks and left before we could ask for straws. A few minutes later someone else brought our queso which was incorrect (the other server corrected the issue for us) while our server was no where to be found. We both ran out of our drink and our server came and filled mine up and just walked away when my wife tried to give the server her cup for a refill. Also she rarely spoke to us. We ran low on chips as we awaited our friends and we asked our server for more chips, she brought a new basket out, dropped it on top of the basket of other chips and walked away again without speaking. When our friends arrived they got to experience the lack of personality of our server as she took their drink and food orders. Our food arrived quickly and each of us like our entrees. One gross thing I noticed is as our server refilled our drinks (including my friends coffee cup without a straw) she would pick up the cups by the rim. This location continues to offer good high quality food, however, after our poor service from the server with sloth drawings on her apron I will probably cause me to pass on this location in the future.

Good food, mediocre service at best

By Kayla Hoover |

I usually enjoy Kerbey Lane a lot, however, my family and I went here after church today and were disappointed with the direction the restaurant has turned. The service was pretty disappointing. We were there during the lunch rush but it has never been this bad in the past. Our waitress wasn’t very friendly, was poorly trained, and didn’t really check up on us. I had to ask for a refill on my coffee, and our table didn’t have the tray of salt, pepper, ketchup, and sugar. I asked for a tray for the table, but our waitress took so long that other tables around us started letting us borrow stuff off theirs. Our food was very good like usual, but it didn’t make up for the bad service.

Breakfast Set To Stun

Man, let me tell you this place is excellent. Chicken and pancakes, yes. Eggs, bacon and sausage, yes. Good location, easy to find, not too packed, good service, reasonable price for breakfast. Love it.

Right next to Gold's Gym so you can reward yourself for a good workout!

We finished our three-hour work-out and decided to go to the fairly new Kerbey Lane Café next door since we hadn't been to that one yet. We usually go to the original on Kerbey Lane, but it was right there and the pancakes were calling to us! We usually have breakfast, no matter what time of day it is. We love Kerbey Lane omelettes and we usually add the two pancakes instead of the other sides. While the omelettes were good, they have the same quality pancakes as the original. One item that is now on the menu is the lemon poppyseed pancake. My wife loves those, but with a twist suggested by a waitress at the original café -- add blue berries to the mix. Yesterday, the waitress suggested a new pancake special called a powered donut pancake where she said they modified the batter a little, then put powdered sugar on top and put the pancake under the broiler to melt the powdered sugar. It sounded good, so we both ordered one of each. The lemon poppy seed blueberry pancake was fantastic as usual. The new powdered donut pancake was good, but seemed rather plain compared to the strong flavors of the lemon poppy seed blue berry pancake. I usually order a gingerbread pancake and I'll do that next time as you can get two different types of pancakes. Neither of us could eat all the pancakes which are huge, so we brought half of them home for supper. The restaurant is brand new and looks like a modern café, unlike the original which is built in an old house. One big bonus for the Westlake location is that there is plenty of parking unlike the paucity of parking at the original location.

Nice Cafe Dining Spot in Austin Texas

By brighteyes3953 |

There are two here in Austin. The one on campus is 24 hours. Nice family atmosphere, great food, great service. We had lemon poppyseed pancake, chicken fried chicken, The Boss Burger, and the Harvest Omelet with Spinach (instead of avocado) ... Yummy. Everything was great.

Not sure why Westlake is a miss for restaurants...

By BKS |

We have dined at the Kerbey Lane (Westlake location) twice in the last 2 months. Both times, we have left disappointed. The service is excellent and the waitstaff is very friendly, however whatever is happening in the kitchen needs to drastically improve. We have not tried breakfast, so maybe this should only be a breakfast place? Everything else has just been OK, with the exception of the pear grilled cheese sandwich we had today for lunch...not good at all. Pears are at the peak of the season right now and the ones served on this sandwich were not edible (hard, no taste). The good news....we were not charged. I sure hope this restaurant gets its act together, as it is very hard to find any good restaurants in Westlake. Too bad we have to travel to the HC Galleria and out 620 to find decent dining.

Not sure

By Gary T |

We tried this establishment for a late breakfast or early lunch depending on how you measure it. I'm told the Denver Omelet and the Breakfast Platter were nice, although the Breakfast Platter was only partial eaten since the eggs were delivered way under cooked. The Chicken Fried Steak had way to much breading and way to little gravy. The Omelet had way to many fried potatoes. The Steak had way to much under cooked Broccoli. Service was good but the kitchen was slow.

Fast, Friendly & Flavorful

By TK14 |

Kerbey Lane Cafe in Westlake has fast and friendly service and the food is flavorful made with fresh ingredients. My favorite place for breakfast. Love the Kerbey Scramble with two buttermilk pancakes. Can't beat it!

A notch above typical

By ColoradoJ |

I was visiting my daughter in Austin, so I readily admit that one visit to one Kerbey Lane location makes this review a bit premature -- pay more attention to reviews from local Austin residents with multiple visits. That said, I liked Kerbey Lane Westlake, but it didn't wow me as anything special. It's pretty much your typical breakfast/lunch diner that you'll find all over the country; except the menu items are unique enough to make it interesting. It's a safe choice, a bit above average in my opinion, but probably not the best choice if you are looking for the best that Austin has to offer.

Good breakfast spot

Good place for breakfast. Very casual and fun. Good for kids. Very good food and good service. Nice place.

Birthday celebration

By Mike C |

Family gathered to wish happy birthday and farewell to favorite waitress. Ejoyed pumpkin French toast with rum sauce and eggs.

Disappointed.

By teamweiss |

Disappointed. We’ve lived in Austin for 12 months and endured the look of horror from most people we when we said we’d never been to Kerbey Lane... so, we went. I’m not sure what all of the excitement is about? I ordered the whole-wheat Apple pancakes which looked and tasted like cardboard... the Apple was virtually undetectable.. the side of fresh fruit (which costs 2.99) consisted of two sad looking slices of orange, a piece of strawberry and some grapes... I ate it willingly though, desperate to add some flavor to my cardboard. My husband had the fried chicken eggs Benedict which he told me was very average and looking at the biscuits crumbling on his plate it appeared he had his own version of cardboard. To top it off the ambience in the restaurant was cold which matched the attitude of the greeter when we first arrived. We won’t be back.

Great place for breakfast!

This place is clean and spacious. Service is great and food options are wonderful. Try the pancakes as there are lots of options.

Breakfast Morning, Noon, or Night !

By Anna G |

First time at a Kerby Lane and I was not disappointed. Actually went twice while in Austin to this same location. In the evening, I had Fried Green Tomato BLT which was great. Bread a little thick so I ended up eating all the goodies with a fork minus the bread. Sweet Potatoe fries were delish. Rest of group had Gingerbread Pancakes and Omeletes both of which received rave reviews. Leaving Austin we went for breakfast and were not disappointed. The California Omelete was soooo good and my sister-in-law could not pass up the Gingerbread pancakes so she was pleased both times with her selection. Excited to return to Austin and stop in again. Great service and reasonable prices to boot!

Mismatched socks and margaritas!

By Robert P |

Eric C., funny guy! Now, I could leave it at that but you would probably think he is the restaurant goof and that would be a disservice to Eric. Yes, he is funny but he has great customer service skills too. We were being seated by the host when Eric stepped back from his forward trajectory to the kitchen and said he was just dropping some things off but wanted to introduce himself and asked if there were any drinks he could bring back with him. The service was onward and upward from there. Keep shining, Eric!

Delicious Family Friendly Brunch/Lunch at Reasonable Price

By AdventureSeeker897 |

My wife and were in town for short trip to Austin, and we stopped by Kerbey's for brunch. The food was delicious and the service was great and they easily accommodated for our 4 month old baby. I got the Kerbey fast lane which is a sampler of breakfast options that also includes pancakes. Kerbey is known for their pancakes and I loved the Pumpkin pancakes. This was the seasonal panCake and I Highly recommend it. Add a traditional swirl to your pancakes when you order (swirl is a Kerbey thing). You won't need/want to add syrup because the pancakes are delicious enough without it. :)

Great Pancakes served with an Austin vibe

By DSergi |

This is my go to pancake joint. The pancakes are always light and fluffy. The ginger pancakes are a favorite. The service is hipster/ slacker with a friendly slightly stones waiter who gets the order out correctly.

Highly Recommended, Disappointing

By Timothy F |

Today, March 12, 2017, my wife and I went to the Kerby Lane Cafe on Capital of Texas Highway in Austin TX for Sunday lunch. This particular location came highly recommended by friends. It was crowded but we did have reservations at 1:00 pm. We ordered coffee, which was served quickly and was good. My wife ordered pancakes with fried chicken breast. I ordered bacon wrapped meatloaf with broccoli substituted for mashed potatoes. Thirty minutes later the food was served. Both dishes were warm, but the quality was missing. My wife's pancakes were partially burned, on the under side, and her chicken was heavily breaded with part of the breading being burned. She scraped it off and ate the chicken, but it was not seasoned well--ended up tasting bland. My broccoli (steamed frozen florets) was good, not over cooked or soggy. However the bacon wrapped pork and beef meatloaf was burned all over. The inside was dry and over done and the crust had to be cut with a steak knife. It was covered with a tasteless sauce of ground red bell pepper and tomatoes. I scraped it off and applied catsup that had no fructose corn syrup. I ate only half of the served meatloaf. I know that the restaurant was extraordinarily busy, but we did have reservations. The quality of our food was poor. Kerby Cafe on Westlake was very disappointing. We would have fared better if we had gone to the Monument Cafe in Georgetown instead of driving 45 minutes to the Kerby Cafe.

Not the Kerbey Lane from memory

By ELK_2019 |

My son and I visited on a trip to visit UT, and this was not the Kerbey Lane I remember from my UT days in the late 1990s. The service was great— very nice and quick— and we appreciated the outdoor seating, but the food was bland, and the side of fruit was terribly fresh. I ordered pancakes and he ordered a burger, and we split a dessert. None of it was anything to write home about, unfortunately. We will probably not be back. Hope they go back to the menu and recipes they used back in the day.

Quirky place with great breakfast and lunchs

By Gerard P |

The biscuits and gravy are terrific and the local art hanging on the walls for sale adds a nice touch. Good service and nice menu.

Good breakfast

By Ruth G |

Our friends like this restaurant which has lunch fare but specializes in breakfast. You can get different pancakes in your stack. My husband had a gingerbread pancake and the flavor of the month, which was chocolate cherry. I found both of them kind of weird. I stuck with buttermilk and blueberry—with a swirl of cinnamon—and a light icing on top. I thought the icing made the pancake too sweet. Three of us had combo plates which gave us fruit, bacon, sausage and egg with our pancakes.

Waitstaff - not impressed

By offseasonfun |

We Went to Kerby because we saw an advertisement and it sounded good. We sat at the bar area. The waitstaff also sat at the bar area as if it were their break area. They yelled back and forth from the seats into the kitchen area. They congregated with their backs leaning on the counter in front of us talking and watching tv. The food was good. No complaints. The water however, came with a strip of plastic. Very shocking. I drank the water and discovered the piece of plastic right in front of our waitress. Her only response and action was 'Oh My God! I am so sorry'. I may go back in the future and try the service at a table instead of the bar area.

Mediocre at Best

By Njoytravl |

So sorry to say - this was not a good dining experience for us. We were here on a Tuesday night for dinner around 6:00pm, it was not crowded. Our group was 3 couples. Our waitperson was clueless the entire time, about everything (questions about the menu, pouring more water for us, being timely, etc.). The chicken pesto panini sounded great, but there was a lot of bread, a big hunk of chicken breast and not much pesto or cheese; it was not savory. The other dishes were similarly average. I know Kerbey Lane is an Austin institution but we will not be coming back.

Inefficient system

By Marc M |

Apparently they have a policy of first in first out for food orders, regardless of when the food is done. It was 12 minutes until our order was delivered after it was done. I know this since I spotted our order on the kitchen counter and tracked the time, while sitting at the counter yielding an ice cold omelette

Breakfast on a Saturday morning

By George Kevin S |

Good but nothing spectacular to note. Just a good average breakfast. There was no wait which was a nice surprise for a Saturday morning. Service was good.

My go-to place when in Austin

By Karen180857 |

Popular and anyone can see why. Good food. If you go for breakfast, expect a wait but it's worth it. And their Kirby Queso is to die for. Queso is not a breakfast item but who cares? Love this place. Bloody Mary's are good too. My daughter says their burgers are outstanding.

Great lunch!

By Amy B |

Our ladies group was told by local that this was a great lunch spot and it was.. Very unique menu items, nice service , super fresh food.I tried the pear and bacon , BLT and it was great. Our service was good and being there for 4 days, this was in the top 3 food choices we made and well we dod eat a lot so i am meaning it was really good.

Great for the whole family

By Melssii |

We went on a sunday for brunch, for this specific location the waiting time was significantly lower than the others. (we stayed in round rock, and they had an hour wait at 11am) We decided to venture out to this location cause of the playground outside so our kids could burn some energy before heading back home (4 hr drive) Every server and host was so nice and welcoming, answered all our questions and the food was great! Interesting twists on your classic brunch meals. We enjoyed it very very much!

Lunch at Kerbey Lane Westlake

By David F |

My wife and I had lunch after I returned from an out of town trip. We both had omelets and they were quite good and reasonable in cost. Nice restaurant, good service. They have great breakfasts including eggs, pancakes and breakfast tacos. Never disappoints.

Good Breakfast with a fun menu

By Kathy H |

We were visiting the Westlake area of Austin and my husband wanted a traditional breakfast.. not anything "new age" he said. I was wanting something different... this satisfied us both. He had a classic breakfast, I enjoyed their wonderful Migas, we had a great waiter, and there was no wait on a Wednesday morning at 8:30. The place could use a good cleaning, but aside from that we would recommend it.

Breakfast and Lunch Combo

By Darlene H |

My husband and I met our daughter family for a late lunch and/or breakfast on Saturday. We started off with the Kirby Queso, chips and salsa. The queso was very good. Their family loves the swirl pancakes and they looked really good. Their family has to eat gluten free, and Kerry Lane does gf really good! My husband REALLY loved his enchilada plate with verde sauce. I had the fish tacos and they were very good too. The service was spotty even though they weren’t very busy.

So many good choices!

By Lisa K |

My Mother and I ate here while visiting family in Westlake. I am vegan and she tries to eat healthy. I had the fried avocado tacos - which were amazingly good. They sounded so strange that I had to try them. Excellent! She has the blackened fish tacos which were also good. A nearby table had ordered pancakes (at 5 pm!) and they smelled heavenly. This is a good choice if their are those in your party who are vegan or who eat gluten free. The restaurant has a nice vibe to it.

Great food, nice staff, LOUD location

By Jen |

We had a typical 20+ minute wait before the 2 of us were seated. Our waitress was very sweet and prompt. It seemed like the young staff handling the seating were a bit overwhelmed though. There were at least 3 open 4-tops and yet no one was being seated and groups were getting frustrated. Our food was delicious and delivered promptly. My eggs were just right and the pancakes were delicious! Only annoying thing is the noise in that place. There's nothing to buffer it and it's just very, very loud in there. Just something to be aware of if you're looking for a quiet brunch, this place isn't it.

Breakfast Greatness

This a great place in any location in Austin. Went for breakfast and had a great meal. Lemon poppyseed pancakes were uniquely delicious. The sausage is fresh and tasty. Great house coffee.

Kerbey Lane has set a standard over the years.

By mr_larry_smith |

I have eaten in many of the Kerbey Lane locations because over the years I’ve been impressed. This was my first time here and it was sub par. The location was strip mall, the menu familiar, the service excellent, the food only ok.

New favorite in Westlake

By rinablan |

Yay Kerbey Lane is in Westlake! We had dinner - the Tomato Pie is 5-star fabulous and was completely different than what we thought it would be - but is seasonal so they will only be serving it for another week or two. My sister and I each ordered Tomato Pie and was the favorite dish of the entire table. My brother-in-law wanted breakfast for dinner that evening and ordered the Crispy Chicken Eggs Benedict (might not be the exact name of the dish). John generously offered us each a little bite and it was another table favorite. THEN - we went the next morning (not much else in Westlake :) and enjoyed our outdoor breakfast of Migas, great coffee, and a wonderful server named Liz! So happy Kerbey Lane is in Westlake as now it will be our go-to option for breakfast, lunch or dinner when we are in town! Kerbey Lane supports local growers and we love that about them.

Best in ATX

By Adam G |

This is my second visit to Kerbey Lane Café but first to this location(see previous brunch review from the Kerbey Lane location). I visited today with my wife for lunch. Immediately upon being seated our server brought water to us. I ordered the bacon wrapped meatloaf (with mashed potatoes and green beans) and my wife had the turkey avocado sandwich with sweet potato fries. It was the best meatloaf I have ever had and my wife's sandwich was delicious. I know there are thousands of places to eat in Austin but don't miss out on Kerbey Lane Café.

Waited nearly an hour for a simple lunch

By punchcard |

My office is located across the street from this restaurant. My lovely wife met me at Kerbey Lane for my lunch hour. We arrived around 11 AM and the restaurant was not busy: less than half of the tables were seated with customers. My wife ordered the Greek lamb burger with fries and I ordered their basic breakfast (two eggs/sausage/home fries & fresh fruit). Forty-five minutes later, our lunch arrived. By then, my lunch hour was pretty much over, so I paid for our meal, shoveled my entire basic breakfast into a Styrofoam box, kissed my wife goodbye, and scurried across the street to my office before my lunch hour expired. My wife stayed and finished her burger and fries alone. I am not usually one to complain, but why would it take a well-established Austin 24/7 restaurant to take nearly an hour to plate a simple burger and breakfast order? I would understand if the place was jam packed with hungry customers, but it wasn’t. We will not be returning.

They find ways to disappoint..

By Gary T |

It seems this restaurant always finds ways to disappoint. On this visit they delivered my omelette, hash-browns, and side of bacon cold. Who wants to eat cold food, they replaced it but by then my wife had finished eating.
