Very good meal had by the two of us.

We had the tilapia - served fish eyes and all and the Sengalese chicken. Both were delicious and good portions. Very unassuming place which is part of its charm. Small place and you can BYOB. Also reasonably priced - I highly recommend venturing to this location.

Delicious House Dressing

By LMM2424 |

I love the food at this restaurant. I eat at this place very often. My starter is the house salad as an appetizer with the house dressing (delicious!). My favorite dish is the Chicken Dibi with brown rice. The prices at this restaurant are a bit higher than other west African restaurants in the area, however I highly recommend the food here.

Fantastic cooking

I ate at Kilimandjaro twice while visiting Philly. The food is just fantastic and the people were ver friendly. I particularly recommend the brochette (grilled meet) and mafe (peanut butter soup woth meet and vegetables served over white rice). Also the design is really nice is a nice African flavor. The only two things are didn't like: the way the Senegalese ladies were dressed and the TV channel that was showing wild American music. Dressing more modestly and in African fashion and showing African channels (get the international dish) would make Kilimandjaro look so mo authentically (West) African.

Savory Food, Family-Friendly Service

By Traveholica |

This is a small local restaurant that anyone living close by would return to time and time again. The food is very delicious, seasoned to the bone. On this visit I had their Tilapia. It was so good, I can still taste it! To drink, I tried a Ginger-Mango juice. It was fresh ginger and real mango. I will not only order this combination again on my next visit, but will attempt to make it at home! If you like flavorful food, this is the place. Close to the University of PA, the clientele is comprised of people from every background and age. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. There is ample free parking. We highly recommend this place.

Excellent food. Casual environment.

Tucked into a rare strip mall in West Philly, this senagalese restaurant was a delightful surprise. My husband (a fish lover and critic) was delighted with flavorful red snapper. I had a lamb dish . Both were very good. Side dishes have huge portions, so be prepared to share. And try the fresh ginger drink.

Great Authentic African food

My guest and I arrived at the restaurant on a Friday evening around 7pm. The place is intimate and warm. We were greeted immediately and seated. We were given our ginger and juice drinks and shortly after our food arrived. It was very delicious. I got the Chicken yassa and fried rice. and it was also a nice portion. I was stuffed by the end of the meal and I will definitely be returning soon..

I need a Kilimanjaro in my town

By Lianne H |

I went to Kilimanjaro with my family this weekend and I had an excellent diner. My Philly family members go here weekly and have been for years. The facility is beautifully decorated and atmosphere is perfect for families or couples. The food is halal which was great although I ended up ordering the fish. The portions size are more than enough to satisfy a hungry man. We had couscous(a sweet sticky kind that taste much different from the usual Moroccan types) a samosa type appetizer, veggies, fish, lamb, ibiscus/bessop(which is just the same as Caribbean sorrel) and the ginger drink(again very similar to Caribbean style). I tried a bit of everything on the table and all I have to say is I can wait to go back to Philly. Peace and Blessing Kilimanjaro.

As a vegetarian, I got by. Meat eaters were very pleased.

Fresh ginger juice was awesome! One patron had a tasty-looking fish dish, the other had half a chicken, both were thoroughly pleased with their meals. I'm a vegetarian, so I had sauteed veg and vermicelli. No complaints! Cute and friendly and cozy and small. Sure, try it!

Second time there still great

Having lived in Senegal with the Peace Corps, the food brings back great memories for me. The tastes were wonderful and the owners super kind. I will go back to this restaurant every time we visit Philly. It's an easy bus ride too!

Lovely Senegalese Cuisine, Reasonably Priced...

- This restaurant is on 43rd & Chestnut for those familiar with Philadelphia, in Chestnut Plaza. - It is a small restaurant with a capacity of about 20 or so people. - It looks like first come first served. - It's quite clean and would be a place that a foodie and their date would enjoy visiting. - It's cash only, no credit/debit cards. There is an ATM next door at the grocery store if you need to withdraw cash. - The food is magnificent! They have a menu that features lunch and dinner dishes with side orders. I had the dibi (lamb chops) with fried plantain and ginger juice. The food was perfect! The spiced food was spiced just right, not overwhelming. - The waitress was polite and despite the place getting busy (I went there on Saturday evening, a busy time for any restaurant worth its salt) she was in control of the situation. - The food comes in about 10 minutes. - I saw some alcoholic beverages on a table with diners. I think they allow you to bring your own bottle. (byob) Just ask. There is a liquor store next door! - There is little fanfare other than well cooked food. Come here for the food. Don't expect 5 star treatment. The waitress also doubles up as the server, cleans the tables and so on and so forth, so they are busy. - They had a lot of customers coming in for takeout. I also saw a group carry out a few large trays of food. It looks like they'll cater for a large group of people if you request/call ahead.

A bit slow, but worth every minute!!

We went to Kilimanjaro at about 8p for dinner on a Thursday evening, and didn't eat until 9p. BUT....the food.was.phenomonal. You know there is someone cooking in the kitchen that has no recipe, but knows how to make spectacular food every single time. You know someone's mom/cousin generationally passed the preparations down the line. You know you are going to eat until you are stuffed! We opted for the dibi lamb, Senegalese chicken, Senegalese rice (jolof-esque), and fried plantain. Everything was wonderfully flavorful. SO GOOD! Will be back.

Oh so good

Have been here twice and food was so delicious both times! Chicken I had last time was super moist! Last time I had the lamb chops which were very good. Make sure you try one of their finger drinks, it was awesome! Next time, I'm going to try their fried fish which I have heard is very popular as well. If you want some African food, this is probably one of the best in Philadelphia.

A true taste of Senegal

By SethandAnn |

Having served in Senegal in the Peace Corps back on 1995 I was super excited to try the food again. I ordered the three staples, thiebujen, yassa, and maffe. All were delicious, but the yassa took the prize. The service was great and the waitress let me practice my rusty Wolof and took no offense as I butchered her native language! I will go back there in a heartbeat

Absolutely AMAZING

By BlackSheep |

Stopped in on the recommendation of friends. Glad I did. Was looking for something different and ethnic and this place met my cravings head on. Had a spicy chicken dish, some rice with vegetables and GINGER JUICE....all was beyond comparison. The food was absolutely amazing, juice was out of this world. I’m craving it again and wish I was either closer or that grubhub, Uber eats or Door Dash has service there because it’s incredible. Will definitely head back again soon. If you’re in the area and looking for something excellent but different, give this place a shot. You’ll be glad you did.

Fantastic

I love this place. The people are very welcoming and accommodating. The food is delicious and it's a very comfortable atmosphere. The restuarant is small but decorated nicely, and very clean. I've been quite a few times now and have yet to be disappointed.

Tastebuds Delight!

By mrouleau |

I cannot say enough about the deliciousness of their food! I was in town on business and fortunately this was close to my hotel. It is a small restaurant that can certainly get crowded and loud, but it had a vibrant atmosphere. I seemed to be the only diner that wasn't a native of Senegal (based on the conversation I overheard), and that is always a great sign. My service was quite expedient and the woman from whom I ordered was very polite and friendly, unlike many other comments about the service. I initially ordered the Poulet Senegal as an entree. It was half a chicken, the skin had wonderful flavor and a nice snap, but it was the onion topping that really made this dish, absolute explosion of flavor! The chicken was tender and juicy. Although I was pretty full, it was so darn good that I just had to have more so I ordered the Fataya as an dessert (even though it's an appetizer). I would describe them like a samosa with flavorful beef inside, absolutely mouth-watering! They arrived quite hot, but too darn good to let cool too much. Everything was so delicious that I gave the server a hug, which seemed to amuse her immensely. There is only one negative about this place, it's in Philadelphia and I'm not! Highly recommended

Delicious meal

Had lunch at the Kilimanjaro recently. Ambience was good. Food was sumptuous. We had roast lamb, fish, veggies and rice. Everything was cooked to perfection. Great food for the price. Will be back next time.

I love this place.

Authentic and Genuine - Amazing Food

By City Food T |

We brought a group visiting for a work conference as part of a food tour all around Philly and this was an exceptional experience. We focused on the diversity and representation of our multi-cultural city, of which none of our visiting guests had ever eaten West African food before. They all came back for multiple services of the Yassa Philly chicken, meat patties, and Senegal cocktail. Youma personally welcomed our group and shared some of her backstory - which was our favorite part of the whole experience. We can't wait to bring many MANY more groups back to Kilimandjaro. Thank you Youma and Abiche!!!

Weekend getaway

I absolutely love this restaurant. The lamb dibi is hands-down the best lamb dish I've ever had. I like this restaurant so much that I've actually planned a trip to Philadelphia just to visit. I live five hours away. It's that seriously delicious. I would have given it five for the food but a two for the bathroom and slow service.

My fav✨

This is the best place to get food. The lamb with the sautéed onions rice and vegetables is to die for. I love it. Nice vibe and the hospitality amazing.

Good food quality, mediocre service, tiny place

By PD |

I went there on Monday of Labor day weekend, for dinner. The menu items sounded exotic and authentic, though they were all based on fish, red meat (lamb and beef), and chicken. I initially ordered for grilled lamb rack. After 10 minutes, the server came back saying they are out of it; hence I replaced it with a lamb shank. Again after 10 mins, she came back, saying they are totally out of lamb for the night. I settle on the senegalese beef kabob. The portion size was fair. The quality was good. The price was cheap, but the service was far from impressive. The restaurant is a tiny casual place in a plaza in west Philly. It makes it good for adventurers who want to try something "new."

My sister and I were having dinner here soon entering was greeted but not very friendly we were sat to look over the menu and left for way to long considering the menu is not that big but upon receiving the food the Snapper was very good well prepared and the rice was absolutely yummy would go back just wish they were friendlier.

Homestyle Exotic cooking in a casual African atmosphere

By jan_klincewicz |

I have never been to Senegal. but have eaten homemade Senegalese meals. This place makes stuff like your mom would if she were an EXCELLENT home cook. Spices and sauces are exotic, but not unfamiliar. A must try app is the meat patties (still shining with oil from the deep fryer, HOT and spicy. The Grilled Tilapia I had appeared whole (including the head) and was quite succulent, but not particularly filling. Fortunately, my wife's half Senegalese chicken was more than she could eat, so with the help of my huge order of red fried rice, I went home full. Daughter was not so adventuresome, so beef Brochette suited her just fine (along with a huge order of plantains.) Service was very friendly and English is spoken well (though French is appreciated.) When we went the TV was on to a soccer game, and lots of local French-speaking Africans were cheering on their respective teams. This is no doubt the kind of experience you would have a continent away, right in a convenient West-Phila strip shopping center (with free parking.) It's small, so try a slightly off-hour, Service takes the amount of time cooked to order takes, so order a delicious Ginger Juice and be patient. You will be rewarded.

One of Philadelphia’s best

By irlundee |

We took a chance on this Senegalese restaurant having had a wonderful experience in Montreal. We were not disappointed. The food is fresh home cooking bursting with flavour. We had the peanut sauced lamb, the tilapia, plus two other chicken and lamb dishes. All were fantastic, as was the sorrel (hibiscus) juice. Everyone was impressed. We would highly recommend it when visiting Philly, cheaper and better than a lot of the overpriced greasy downtown spots. West African cuisine is very wholesome and tasty.

wouldn't return - food ok

Fun food experience.

Fun food experience. Service is super friendly if not efficient. Casual place but warm and inviting. The flavors were mostly new to us and certainly feels like authentic home cooked food. Rustic, nothing fancy but enjoyed being welcomed into the owners and chefs culture. Thank you!

It's a Senegalese restaurant. (Why Kilimanjaro?) I don't know what Senegalese cuisine is like, but most customers seemed to be immigrants so it must be pretty authentic. Tastes were very thick and rich, with HUGE volumes. Slow-cooked dishes were especially good. Looks dingy from outside but inside is pretty cozy. Moderate pricing for area, but one entree can be enough volume for two.

Delicious food

I absolutely appreciated the food. It was delicious. I had the dibi and fish and they were both lovely. Being from Senegal I know exactly how both of them should taste. The only thing I wasn't happy about was the lack of attention of one of the servers (although super pretty and fine talk lady) who was constantly on her phone, either doing selfies or snapchat. The restaurant is not the place for that in my opinion especially when there are customers. Other than that, congratulations to the owner. Keep up the good work.

A great experience

I'd never had authentic african cuisine before, so I have nothing to compare this to, but it was wonderful! Didn't think I'd be into the fried plantaines, but boy was I wrong - yum!! The chicken Yasa was amazing, however I recommend getting the dinner size, as the lunch portion just wasn't enough for me. Our server was so sweet and helped us pick out our meals. The ervice was very good. The only downside to this restaurant is it's location.
