Great place

By OLEG V |

Very pleasant place with nice barmen - and that is important. Great selection of drinks and cocktails. Also, great place to wait for your table at Buona Forchetta across the road.

Nice gourmet vegan restaurant!

By Herschel J |

What a great find. San Diego just got better because of Kindred. This place has class, great drinks and fantastic food. This is more of an upscale and trendy type restaurant and fits well with the neighborhood. The prices are very reasonable and the food...Delicious. Give it a try! I dare you!

Kindred Rocks

By surfseekermjc |

An absolutely unique dining experience! The restaurant was beautiful, the food was great & the staff was kind. Try the beet risotto!

Wow!

By seabrooker20 |

We started out with the "Spears", which had fantastic flavor. I could have feasted on another serving (they are quite filling), but we had the Bbq Jackfruit sandwich , which was equally amazing. I'm not vegan or veggie, but this place is a real find. Amazing flavor and textures. Nice selection of craft, draft beers as well.

Excellent Brunch and Nice Spot!

By Donna M |

We had a delicious vegan brunch of Mash & Hash dining on the outside bar seating. The ingredients are all very fresh, healthy and tasty. This is definitely a popular neighborhood place to go.

Best Vegan Hands Down!

By Brian R |

I have tried probably every vegan restaurant in San Diego. Kindred is absolutely amazing!!! I'm not going to try to describe the menu items because I just can't do it justice. I have to mention my favorite- the BBQ Jackfruit sandwich (not sure exactly what it's called). Tastes like pulled pork and would probably fool a lot of people. Comes with housemade BBQ potato chips that are out of this world. Prices were so reasonable we couldn't believe it!! They are only open for lunch/brunch on weekends...

Tasty vegan food.

By restaurantgoer41 |

This is a great place but they do not take reservations. First night we tried to visit we arrived around 7:30PM and there was a 55 minute wait. Also, the walls were opened in the restaurant, which I imagine it is a great idea for warm nights, but on that December evening it felt too cold. Instead of waiting we decided to return the following day at an earlier time and wearing sweaters. We really enjoyed our visit since we were a group of four vegans and the whole menu is vegan. We all liked the different dishes we ordered. The beet risotto was specially good and the desserts too.

Wow!!

By sherrivg |

One of the best highlights to my San Diego trip!! So hip, friendly and righteously evil at the same time. Popcorn was awesome!! Drinks and staff so friendly and welcoming. I felt right at home!!

Fun place with different vibe.

By KenandCleda |

This place is great for the healthy minded. They serve vegan, vegetarian food and are know for there cocktails. Has a fun atmosphere and decor. Our server was very nice and our service was good.

A great vegan restaurant even for meat eaters!!

By Ahotelguy |

This is a great restaurant. The cocktail program is exceptional and innovative. The bartenders know how to make a proper cocktail whether classic or something new they have created. The food is exceptional and unlike many vegan restaurants there food is creative, with exceptional flavor and you leave the restaurant well satisfied. The space is also well designed and gives you a great indoor/outdoor feel. I would recommend this restaurant as a must do in San Diego.

Great cocktails and vegan fare

By Matt M |

Came in with my family (11, 8, 74) and everyone enjoyed the ambience of death metal music and creepy wallpaper. The food was very flavorful....get the pickles. The drinks were refreshing and unique. A fun place for us. Ok for kids if early and they have adventurous tastes.

Farro From Beyond

By Dana R |

We went to Kindred after a beer next door at Hamiltons. Kindred was new since the last visit to SD. Loved the atmosphere, service and salad. The Farro from Beyond is outstanding and will give you incentive to try to create at home. Maitake mushrooms, fennel, dates and lemon horseradish hummus made a savory and amazing meal. We shared as it was enough for two as an appetizer. They have a wonderful selection of liquors and aperitifs.

Halloween weekend

By thejusticeleague |

My wife and I along with a friend came here for Halloween weekend and we had a blast. The atmosphere was great and the vibe was chill. The food is all vegan and taste is amazing.

Great local sport!

By Jillian R |

I am not vegan but this was a great little find. Fun atmosphere, great cocktails, and fun beer. The food was wonderful. I had the skewers, Kale salad, and Jackfruit sandwich (split with a friend) and they had wonderful flavor! Our waitress was also great, very friendly and quick to give advice when we had questions. Overall great experience!

A very pleasant surprise

By thelangernj |

The restaurant is a slight second to the bar, but the eclectic pairings of the dishes gives you not only exposure to everyday vegetables in unique ways but the fusion works. Many of these types of restaurants are simply a mix that doesn't collectively exceed the sum of the parts. But this was different. We had two of the salad offerings and they were very tasty and very good melds of the ingredients. The main course options were just as impressive. A good selection of tequilas and rums, and beers await the adventurous. Definitely a younger crowd, but the food and spirit of the place is worth the trip. The couples seating for food can be interesting with the small swing out tables, otherwise it would have been exceptional.

Wow

By Danielle C |

Even if you are not a vegan, you must try this place!!!! The cocktails are tasty, the ambience is super cute. We started with the fried pickles and the hearts of palm. Excellent! I had the Memphis BBQ jackfruit and my date had the soul crush. Both were delicious! Ended the meal with the cookie dough truffles... OMG. So good. Can't wait to come back here to try the brunch. Highly recommend!

Why did I wait so long?

By singingvegan |

Last time I was in San Diego (my home town), a couple people told me to try Kindred. This trip we waited until our last evening to go--mistake! Now I'll have to wait until the next trip to try everything else on the menu. Kindred is fun and edgy--a plant-based haven that doesn't take itself too seriously. But the food is seriously good, as are the specialty cocktails. The Wizard salad was amazing. The BBQ jackfruit sandwich was the best I've had. The Salt and Vinegar comes with fabulous crispy onion rings. The food is heavier than I'm used to, and I shouldn't have eaten so much...but it's soooo good! Check out the bathrooms if for no reason besides the cat pictures.

Amazing Vegan in South Park

By Susie1028 |

Kindred is a beautiful, hip, and eccentric space for vegan fare & drinks. Really, this is an excellent vegan restaurant with well thought out dishes. The menu is not huge, but everything they have is delicious. We had the soul crush (fried chicken type dish) and caesar salad. They have amazing cocktails, too. Prices are good, and staff is rad. Kindred is located in a busy restaurant area of South Park (Buona Forchetta is across the street), so parking (street parking only) is challenging.

Terrific meal

By Tangoevora |

We had a great meal here with friends. Not vegans, but this place was recommended and it came through. All dishes were excellent, as was the service. Highly recommend.

Great!

By Carrieamcdaniel |

My friend told me that we were going to try a Vegan restaurant in South Park. I had no idea what to expect from the menu since I'd never been to a Vegan restaurant.Let me tell you! This place is so cool. From the space, decor, bar tenders, music to the food presentation, taste and variety of creative cocktails. One of my new favorite places in San Diego! Such a great energy about this place. It's situated in a cute neighborhood with lots of culture and activity. I can't wait to go back!

Gr8 food/awesome decor

By travelingCAgal |

We had been wanting to come here for a long time. On a weekday evening the place was packed. We got lucky and snagged a table way in the corner where it was quieter on a cool evening. Though, the outdoor dining did look very appealing! On a warm evening, it would be the perfect place to sit. We loved the decor! The vegan food was absolutely delicious!!! We definitely will come back!!!

love, love, love this place!!

By jenLeCreate |

Went to this restaurant to celebrate birthday of my wife's (and my) friend on her daughter's recommendation (she knows we eat plant based). We went on a thursday night and drove around for a little to find parking (street parking all around). They don't take reservations and said it would be about a 1/2 hour wait (hmmm... sound familiar?), took our phone # and we could chill to get a table (they had room at the bar if we wanted). We hung out - lots going on - super busy but organized chaos - servers kept stopping by and asking if we wanted a drink (we were hanging by a belly table). They also had a record signing or something going on that they were using some of the tables by the entrance for. We just chilled and checked out all the artwork that was around the place and were getting hungry looking at the menu. After about 20 minutes our friend's phone buzzed and we were on. Had a nice table over in the corner that worked out perfect and before you know it, our server was ready to take out order. They are known for their drinks I guess, but our friend brought a couple of special bottles of wine that they were happy to cork for us. We ordered some food to get us started and kept a menu so we could add as we needed. We ordered everything to share - herb puffs, the mac, the skewers and the rice above (we might even had others that i don't remember). We hung out for a while (probably 1 1/2 hours) and the service was excellent, the food presentation (and of course taste ) was perfect. Love, love, love this place. You need to go to this place. A couple of final notes - I'm sure on weekends it goes off - so you might have a wait, but it is so worth it. And check out the decor in the bathroom. Note, if you need a very quiet restaurant, it might not be your place.

Unusual

By VeganP |

A very different bar & vegan restaurant. Not what we envisaged. However food was very good & goth-inspired servers were particularly friendly & helpful. Softly played music was of a heavy metal type. Interestingly old copies of Dungeons & Dragons were passed around at some point which was fun & unexpected. Althouse we enjoyed our visit & anyone would be warmly welcomed by their friendly servers & bar staff, Kindred is possibly more suited to a younger crowd.

Hands down, the best vegan restaurant in San Diego!

By raner |

Kindred has become our go-to place for brunch and dinner alike, and we now go there almost every weekend. The menu is not very long, but every single item is absolutely delicious (yes, we've tried them all). Especially for breakfast it is truly impressive what the folks at Kindred are cooking up without any animal ingredients: on the savory side, the Tofu Benedict and the Tofu scramble are our current favorites. If you prefer a sweet breakfast, we can highly recommend the granola or the caramelized banana pancakes. We also like to complement our brunch with an order of the grapefruit avocado salad and the smoked carrot (Kindred's ingenious vegan take on smoked salmon). For dinner, you should absolutely try the cauliflower steak, the "salt & vinegar", and the beet risotto. The "deli battle" or the skewers make for excellent appetizers (which is by no means to say that their portions are small). The food quality for both brunch and dinner is very high and very consistent (i.e., we never caught them on "a bad day"). Even if you are just stopping by for a drink Kindred will not disappoint. Their bar is extremely well appointed, and in addition to the standard cocktails there are several signature drinks to choose from. For those who prefer non-alcoholic libations the blackcurrant kombucha brewed by San Diego's own Living Tea Brewing Company is definitely worth a try. Service is also very quick, consistent and friendly, only occasionally slowing down during peak hours. If you're planning on bringing your old-fashioned parents or conservative business partners to Kindred, be warned: the restaurant's trademarks are a quirky steampunk fantasy interior, a motley crew of very splashy punk/goth waitresses, and borderline deafening hardcore and heavy metal music. So, if you want to introduce your girlfriend to the family or seal an important business deal, well... Kindred might not be the optimal choice. Also, check the menu beforehand if you have a soy or gluten intolerance or if you follow a "paleo" diet: some of the menu items may turn out to be unsuitable for you, limiting your options. As an interesting side note: the large "four-eyed wolf with snakes" sculpture is used to collect donations for the California Wolf Sactuary. Finally, San Diego has a top-notch vegan restaurant!

Heavy. Heavy Metal. Light Stomach. Vegan.

By Chef M |

Hey! This is a heavy metal music restaurant for millennials and younger! I felt really OLD eating there. But it's worth it for the fun, the creative seating, the plastic lion with serpents that hangs on the wall with dollars in his mouth, and mostly the creative, amazing food, that just happens to be vegan. Bravo! Chef!

Best Vegan Restaurant EVER!

By kristinaklein1 |

It was so good that my girlfriend and I came here twice on our vacation to San Diego! Best menu ever, cocktails are so unique and well-crafted and the food is just as delicious! We came for brunch one day (amazing pancakes!) and then came back for dinner another evening. My burger was so delicious and my girlfriend’s grilled cheese and tomato soup was mouth watering! Very yummy potato chips, too that hit the spot with the delicious, unique cocktails. A special shout out to our brunch server, Jenny who was the sweetest, best service and hospitality ever! I strongly recommend Kindred to anyone! It’s an inclusive atmosphere for all and we loved it so much that we got t shirts! We can’t wait to come back again!

Cocktail Heaven

By Kris M |

Absolutely amazing cocktails, and made to order if you don’t like exactly what’s on the menu! Our server, Justine, was amazing providing just the right level of attention and making great recommendations. After trying our first round of drinks, she helped us tailor the next round to find that perfect drink for the night: giving ideas on different liquors and flavors to mix. Mixology at its finest! We also had one of snacks: Hearts of Palm and added avocado on top (as Justine suggested). Really interesting flavors and nice presentation. Will be back soon!

Nothing to write home about.

By Melissabk59 |

Very limited menu, and while some of the food had a good flavor, almost everything was way too heavily salted, spiced or sauced. Extremely nice wait staff, however, I am not sure I would recommend to others and I definitely wouldn't return.

Great food

By kowalski214 |

I'm not a vegan or even a vegetarian but the food here is first class, don't be put off if you're a meat eater. The decor is also really interesting and service was friendly and informative.

Cool atmosphere and craft cocktails

By KathyV86 |

If you are looking for unique and tasty craft cocktails check out Kindred. It has a hip vibe, cool decorations, and bartenders that know their goods! My favorite drink was the Crown of Thorns.

Tasty Food & Drink

By drinky |

We are always on the lookout for good plant-based cuisine, and Kindred fit the bill. The service was friendly, but a bit slow. We were unaware that it was an open air restaurant - we would have dressed a bit warmer had we known. They were busy, and it took about 15 minutes for our drinks to arrive. I had the Storm Bird cocktail, which was very tasty - fruity, strong-ish, not sweet. My date had the Blackened Manhattan, which he enjoyed. We shared the Kefta skewers (Impossible shawarma, lemon relish, toum) - they were good, but the shawarma lacked texture, coming off a bit mushy. The charred remains dish was very good, but a little one-note. The Doom Bloom (battered and fried mushrooms) was tasty, but too big for two people and lacked a fresh element. In all, the meal was enjoyable, but our expectations were higher.

Best vegan food!

By AKD |

Loved the atmosphere, ordered one of their bowls was sooo yummy! Both service and food were delicious, would definitely go back!

Went for brunch. Good -- if you're a vegan, otherwise a little 'different' with limited menu selections. Street parking.

By Don'tWaitForRetirement |

My brunch club picked 'Kindred' in South Park for our quarterly outing. Not being vegan, it was a little tricky picking something from the limited brunch selections, many of which contained tofu. ("Where's the egg and bacon?!", I thought as I perused the menu). After inquiring about 'soy curl', I plunged for the 'Seared Soy Curl Crepe' (Soy Curl, promised the waiter, "Looks and tastes like meat"). It was...uh, different. It kind of reminded me of curls of gyro meat and tasted quite salty. For me, it was OK, but I wouldn't order it again. The price of a coffee at $5 seemed a little steep and hence nobody in our group ordered it. (The brand was 'Modern Times', known for it's beer). Again there wasn't much variety in this category. No tea, no cappuccino, no latte. Just $5 coffee. Kindred had a tattooed, hipster vibe with indoor and outdoor seating (Yes, there are heat lamps) and friendly attentive staff. I liked the offbeat way of bringing the bill inside a paperback book. One downside were the marbled bench seats which were very cold and hard on the bum -- not encouraging us to linger too long. The food was of good quality, the service was attentive and the restaurant had a good vibe, which lead to my overall rating of 'Very good -- 4 circles'. On a personal level, I would give it an 'Average -- 3 circles' as it wasn't really my thing, but that's not the restaurant's fault. I'm always up for trying new places and new foods, but being that I live 30 minutes away and due to the limited selection, I probably won't exactly become one with Kindred. Note: Street parking. Great vegan fare in an eclectic ambiance

By takeROOT-27 |

My husband and I dined at Kindred during our first trip to San Diego. We started off with the wizard bowl and split the beet risotto and Memphis BBQ jackfruit for dinner. All the food was very tasty and especially loved that they're vegan! They also have an extensive cocktail list. Kindred is the perfect place to dine for dinner on a warm summer night, or anytime really. Can't wait to revisit!

Best popcorn ever

By lovednb |

Fun place for drinks and small bites . Went with some friends for some drinks, and we had the best popcorn. The bartenders were great, and the drinks were really good.

Always a stop when visiting SD

By Christina M |

I’ve been here a few times and I never leave disappointed. On weekends, they don’t serve the regular lunch menu, only brunch until 3. The menu changes but I’ve tried the hashes for the mashes, benedict, pancakes, nectarine toast and a drink with charcoal. All delicious! Staff seems willing to offer suggestions and answer any questions.

Pretty Crazy-Amazing!

By YYZandbeyond |

Such a wild cocktail menu! And oh-so-yummy wines! The server was super helpful and really funny. My friends are there too often I think haha! It was my first time tho and ah! how I wish I could come to SD more! Oh. the food. my god... the 4 of us all got something different and shared it, and also got the popcorn,..cause...hello...popcorn...Everything was SO AMAZING! The flavours were so different and fun! I had the cauliflower steak. WOW... I have tried to recreate it at home, but no dice. Worth a visit even if your not vegan!

Interesting Atmoshpere; marginal vegan/vegetarian food

By Victoria K |

I went with my vegan husband. He thought I would like the atmosphere. Well, it is upbeat, bustling and full of "youngish" tattooed patrons and workers. That was all ok. We had a nice booth and ordered. Full bar with interesting cocktails. I ordered a BBQ "chicken" sandwich (knowing that it was not really chicken). Whatever they made the "chicken" out of was terrible. I had one bite. My husband tried it and agreed. The cajun popcorn was fine. My husband did not really care for his dinner either. I don't really care for vegan meat substitutes which is a large portion of the menu. Would prefer some simply prepared vegetables or salads.

Vegan meets metal

By catchyginger |

I have been here several times. It is an interesting place. It is vegan meets heavy metal. Strange but good. It has a nice bar with great drinks and a decent draft selection. The bartenders are great and the service is good. I have tried everything on the menu. I always return to the jackfruit bbq. Prior to Kindred, I had never even heard of jackfruit. I am a fan. The bbq sauce is nice and tangy. They put just the right amount on. The cauliflower steak maybe a close second favorite. I guess cauliflower steak is somewhat of an oxymoron, but it is damn good. The sauces really make the dish. This is a definite. This place really rocks on weekends so there may be a wait for a table.

Amazing!

By Helen K |

This is my new favorite restaurant in San Diego! I'd been wanting to try it out and finally went for my birthday dinner. OMG!! None of my friends are vegan, but they enjoyed the food every bit as much as I did. Fabulous service, spectacular food and beverages and comfy but chic decor. On a scale of 10, I give Kindred a solid 12! I can't wait to go back!.

Great food and atmosphere

By travelinjudy65 |

We had a delicious meal here this week. It was a Tuesday night but the place was packed! Service was a bit slow. I had the beet risotto, which was one of the gluten free dishes. It was different and delicious. My grandson had a sandwich which was good but spicy. Not a large menu, but good and unusual food choices. The decor Was great-- bordering on eclectic, it was very loud, and the music was heavy metal. Its a great neighborhood spot for a meal anytime. It's probably worth making a reservation for since it gets so busy.

Exceeded all expectations

By watermelon311 |

I brought my all non-vegan family members here and everyone was blown away. The atmosphere is so cool and hip, and the food was amazing; very high quality, unique cuisine. A must for vegans and non-vegans alike!

I like being vegan now!

By Lisa J |

So new at the vegan experience in support of my celiac daughter - we converted. This was out third vegan restaurant and It was fantastic! I ordered the BBQ Jackfruit sandwich and it was incredibly filling - plenty to take home half. My hubby had the comfort food - "Fried Chicken" with mac and cheese. He was not crazy about that mac but loved the chicken. We will def return!

Easy to Miss This Gem

By SuperTed19 |

In the days before the internet was a thing, we would not have known about this place. We are most pleased we planned ahead and included Kindred in our tour of vegetarian restaurants in San Diego. The decor/theme was unique. I think it is a heavy metal or fantasy thing they have going, and it works very well. As nice as the decor was, we really came for the food... The tofu benedict is what got our attention in the first place, but everything we ordered was delicious!

Interesting

By gtorres80 |

I'm not vegan but my good friend is, so we decided on this place. The atmosphere and decor I loved...think French Gothic. Even though I'm not vegan the Tofu benedict I had were good.

Very cool place and very good veggie food

By Ferporro |

The restaurant looks amazing with very cool decoration! Everyone wears tattoos and hipster beards with rock’n’roll t-shirts. Margaritas are nice Shared a salad with cashew cheese, very tasty but too much lettuce (on my opinion). For main we ordered “fake chicken” which it might not sound good but it was amazing!!! I would definitely would go again and again.

What a place!

By Erik N |

Went there with my girlfriend and it was simply spot on! What an amazing place! The ambiance, the food, the cocktails, the service. They just did everything right! Highly recommended for every foodie out there - not just vegans!

#ALLVEGAN

By VictorSpayde |

One of the best and coolest places for a great vegan time ! The ambience is perfect mixture of everyone good vibes only. Very good drinks and food. It’s a mixture of darkness and life because of the good vibes inside. I definitely recommend to go to this place. Also on the hidden menu they have the best chicken nuggets ever only can order if say #VICOSENTME

Hip Vegan Spot

By valerie p |

Don't let the punk description deter you.... This place is awesome. Great decor and atmosphere, impressive cocktail list, and delicious food!! On warm nights, the walls open, creating patio seating - perfect for people watching. This is one of those vegan restaurants you can bring your carnivore friends to, and they will love it. On weekends, get there before 7 in order to get seats without a wait. We had the flat bread appetizer, a salad and sandwich, and the cookie dough truffles for dessert. Get the dessert!

Great vegan food if you can get past the Satanic/skull/pentagram decoration!!

By Claudia M |

Loved the food, the waiters/waitresses all have tattoos and piercings, but are very nice and attentive. Tables are quite close to each other where you can hear your neighbor's conversation, so the few booths are better.

Don't think vegan food can be good? Go here!

By Straus Mouse |

If anyone thinks vegan food can't taste good, take them here! What an eclectic and delicious menu, almost everything we tried was a hit. Plus the vibe and atmosphere were so cool - paganism and veganism coming together in a great way. Creatively named drinks started us off - my "pyroclasm" was very tasty with mezcal and spicy fruity goodness. Everyone else was happy with their beverages. And then the food - so good! We had the 3 skewers - seitan with chimichurri, impossible shwarma, and bbq yuba (tofu skin), and they were all really delicious with completely different flavors on each. The cosmo knots were also very good - like grown-up vegan pizza rolls. The hot potatoes were also a hit, with a good crunch on the outside and soft, pillowy potato inside, with a tasty aoli. The charred remains - a pile of veggies with some vegan cheese and a sauce - was ok, the brussels sprouts were undercooked a bit and overall it was just ok. The Caesar's Palace salad was yummy and fresh - but the name needs to be changed, as it sounds like it would be a vegan version of a Caesar salad, but it missed that mark. But the overall taste was great. The Mind Melt sandwich, however, lived up to its name - gooey vegan cheese and onions and béchamel and apples - so damn tasty! The egg roll burger was the other home run of the night - what a creative and delicious dish! Asian-flavored impossible burger with shredded veggies, a great sauce, and the piece de resistance: a thin, crisp wonton that gave the burger a phenomenal texture contrast. Would order this one over and over again! So if you're looking for vegan food or want to just expand your horizons, you can't miss with Kindred.

I want to go back!

By JDZatSF |

We came here for brunch, sat outside, and devoured amazing vegan food. A truly outstanding place and I am eager to return for dinner. We had things like vegan french toast, blueberry strudel, and toast with almond ricotta and pluot slices. All of it was crazy yummy!

Inventive Vegetarian Fare in a Beautiful Alfresco Setting!

By Jeffrey C B |

My wife and I had dinner here recently. Enjoyed delicious cocktails, two excellent salads, a wonderful cauliflower entree, and cookie dough truffles for dessert! This was one of our tastiest meals in a month of travel in Southern California - don't let the vegan or vegetarian menu put you off! Service was first rate too! Note, the restaurant has two long wide communal tables and a few individual booths - all open to the lovely San Diego evening air.

Happpy vibes, great ambiance , awesome food

By ellireza |

Went to this Bar/ restaurant per our friend's recommendation and we sure loved our experience. Happy and friendly staff, good looking cocktails, delicious Vegan meals...what else can you ask for! We got the Jack Fruit BBQ sandwich and it was to die for! Could not believe how tasty it was.. Even if you are a Carnivore, you can't stop eating! Loved our experience and can't wait to go back.

Amazed and satisfied

By Christianwebber |

We were treated well by the staff and had some amazing food and cocktails I can’t wait to go back. Very cool decor and lots of attention to their food.

Fantastic vegan food and really good drinks as well.

By Tom H |

I always make a point to go to Kindred whenever I'm home on the weekends. Their brunch is amazing, especially their pancakes and french toast. If its dinner time then I love their BBQ pulled jack-fruit sandwich. They have beers on tap and plenty of interesting mixed drinks, but I actually prefer their delicious bubbly kombucha. The price is only a little high for San Diego sit down restaurants. Their unique theme is pagan/witchcraft. There's a huge head of the wolf demon Moloch mounted on the wall and the staff all wear black as far as I know. Don't be intimidated by that if you're not interested in heavy metal or piercings, it's a very relaxed and friendly place. If you're anywhere near South Park you absolutely must eat here.

Amazing Vegan Fare with Creativity and Organics

By Jdicarlowagner |

We celebrated a special birthday at Kindred and so happy we did! It's atmosphere is friendly goth, with metal music played low in the background. The dishes were creative and local organics were used. We had some appetizers, drinks, and dinner portions. I crave their fried tempah salad with beets and glazed carrots so, I get it once a week as take out. It's a younger, hip crowd, but no one feels out of place. Get a reservation, it fills up early!

Fun place for a vegan dinner!

By reginalampert |

Very good food with imaginative menu, good service, delicious drinks, and they allow canine companions if you’re seated outdoors! Prices are reasonable, and you don’t have to be a vegan to enjoy the food. They not only have a nice dinner menu, the brunch is really good as well!

Great Food, But Get Your Coffee Somwhere Else

By Nancyuen |

We came to Kindred for breakfast/brunch on a Sunday morning (they open at 10). Since there were four of us, we were seated comfortably in one of the booths at the back of the restaurant. The fact that it is a vegan restaurant did not deter us. We were actually very curious as to what kind of items they served, because at most breakfast places, eggs, at least, make some appearance on the menu. Not here. But we didn't miss the eggs at all. Since we were not extraordinarily hungry, we ordered the fried potato bread first, then followed it up with On Toast, both of which were excellent. The Tofu Benedict also looked good, and the person who ordered it said it was very tasty. The only bad thing they serve is coffee. Perhaps it is just not to my taste, because I do not like sour-tasting coffee, and I also don't like soy milk which curdles immediately when poured into the acidic coffee. Apparently, they also offer almond milk, but we were not told of this choice by our server. We were just given the soy milk with an apologetic explanation that it does tend to curdle in coffee. We wondered why on earth do they serve a condiment that ruins what might otherwise have been an acceptable cup of coffee? The coffee itself was, as I stated, not to my taste, so I sent it back. Fortunately, we were not charged for it. I would have complained if they had. All in all, we had a good time, as we were meeting friends and everyone enjoyed their food. On the day we went, they had a special beverage, and therefore had no kombucha. They also did not have tea anywhere on the menu. Our server was a nice young woman whose name I've since forgotten.

Trendy fun atmosphere, with even better food

By bbattoch |

Just from walking in the extravagant front door you know you're in for something special coming to this place. The decoration is super trendy and hardcore with a demonic type of styling. They go above and beyond with the styling from the seating to the decor and wallpaper, no detail missed. Then there's the food! We started with the skewers which were amazing. The creamy cheese sauce they had to the side was delicious not to mention the tenderness of the skewers themselves. I had the pulled BBQ jackfruit and my wife had the beet rissoto. They were both nothing short of perfect. Then the cookie dough truffles for desert. Big portions neither of us finished our main course and got it to go. We had a great time it really seemed like a place that every type of eater would enjoy. Will definitely come back.

Wonderful vegan dishes

By DeeFry |

The food at Kindred is delicious, and the skewers were the standout, so yummy that we ordered some to go. Service was excellent.

Brunch with memorable vegan food and death metal cats

By Reeth E |

I have been teetering on shifting more towards vegan and dropping the ovo-lacto things and this food has convinced me it is really worth exploring. I had the brunch tofu scramble which was ultra delicious. The composition of the plated elements lovely and the combination of flavors inspiring- buttery, piquant, fiery, crisp, tender. Walking into a floor-to-ceiling bathroom stall, I stared motionless at the intense cat photo a bit too long; the motion-sensor light went off-leaving me in pitch black --even better :) The wall of windows opens on two sides letting in light and air--so refreshing and it mellows out the hustle of restaurant and bar noises of this busy place. Would love to come back when next in S.D.

Not Worthy Of Repeat Clientele..

By PSyal |

We went here exactly a year ago and had an amazing experience - because it was a weekday and there was almost no wait at all. Today, we went on a Friday and they told us it will be a wait of 45 mins (since they don't take reservation). But we didn't have a table until almost an hour and 15 mins. It was awful. All of my memories of amazing food and hostess from last year, were wiped away by the way they treated us this time. When a customer's time has no value for the service provider, I don't think it's worth being a repeat customer. We took a friend along today with a promise that this place is great. How ironic that the recommendation came so costly. Very, very disappointing

Not a Vegan, but Blown Away by This Restaurant!!

By Mike E |

I'm not a vegan nor a vegetarian. I have eaten at several of both with friends who are either vegan or vegetarian, and I have never enjoyed my meal. This place is truly out of this world. They have items on the menu that genuinely tastes like meat. For example, they have a BBQ Jackfruit dish that I swear tastes exactly like meat. If I wasn't told that it's jackfruit, I would never have known. We went there on a double date, and the four of us shared several dishes. Each and every item we had was truly delicious. I am very impressed by this restaurant.

Consistently AMAZING!

Great Food, but Terrible Coffee

By Nancyuen |

We have been here a few times for brunch on weekends. We're tried their offerings of "On Toast," pancakes, potato bread, and their vegan Hollandaise as part of their (vegan) Benedict. All their dishes are really tasty, and one does not miss eggs, cheese, or milk in their presentations. Their coffee is a notable exception, as it is in the style that has become popular of late, but one that we didn't care for, as it was bitter, sour, and the soy milk curdled, giving it a rather unpleasant appearance. They could do much better by using flax or almond milk for their coffee, as a starter. They could really improve their lot by serving coffee from a *good* coffee roaster, like Bird Rock (a local company). Their service is good. The staff was apologetic when confronted with their terrible coffee. Fortunately for us, they took it off our bill after we complained about its horribleness. Also fortunately for us, there is a Starbucks only a few blocks away, where we picked up our coffee en route so that we could enjoy our breakfast with coffee. Having never been there in the evening, we can only attest to their popularity by witnessing the crowds that gather there on Friday and Saturday nights.

Super Tasty

Fantastic food that happens to be vegan! The atmosphere is a little weird--the music is pretty heavy, and since it gets crowded, it can be hard to hear your conversation at times. However, the food makes it totally worth it. I order the tofu scramble for brunch and was blown away by the complexity, powerful flavors (for tofu, no less!), creaminess of the tofu, and eye appeal. My guest had the benedict, and he was extremely happy as well. This is now one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego, and I'm not even a vegan. Well played, Kindred!

Perfect for a fun dinner experience

Really great atmosphere and delicious healthy fresh food. Bathrooms are a tiny bit too dark for me, but the main dining area is so bright and fresh. Lovely wait staff and good prices.

Rad Vegan place!

By Edmund P |

You cannot make reservations... we went on a Saturday night after comicon. The place was totally packed yet we waited about 25 minutes to be seated. Kindred is very loud and has a heavy metal decor. A lot of 30 something patrons drinking inventive cocktails, but my wife and I had read a review in vegnews and had to try the place. I would highly recommend the skewers. The entrees were very good as well. My only beef (no pun intended) is that we had to yell over the noise... even though we were Inches away from each other.

Creative vegetarian food

The place is amazing, decoration and music wise. We had the rice above and it was delicious. Drinks were amazing as well.

Delicious vegan pancakes

By Juan Carlos M |

Even though this place has already good reviews, we want to reinforce opinions and to confirm that this is one of the best vegan/vegetarian local restaurants in San Diego. We visited it for Sunday brunch, and the pancakes are massive, so if you are not starving, consider to share them. Highly recommended.

Superb vegetarian cusine

I have been a vegetarian for 45 years and I must say the dinner I had at Kindred topped everything I've ever had. The chef must be classically trained because the sauces were not the stuff of an amateur. It is difficult for me to move on to other elements of our dining experience because of the shocking quality of the food. The previous restaurant at this location just never quite did things right. We ate there numerous times and occasionally sat at the bar for wine and appetizers. First of all, Kindred's ownership did what needed to be done--they gutted the place and opened it up to light and to the street with outside dining. I like the new decor and you do find yourself glued to the ceiling, which is all mirrors. There is a large bar with ample seating. There are several configurations of seating, so you are bound to find something you like. The only negative is that it is explosively noisy. Noise doesn't bother me, but my dinner partner kept mentioning it and found it too distracting. I would imagine they will find a way to better balance sound within the interior. I would give it five stars, but the Earth has to shake before I ever do that! I don't just give stars away. I've dined all over the world and I have expectations that probably bore most people, but I have a very open mind to new food, flavors, settings, etc. I'm not stuck in the mud, but I think you really have to put out to get five stars. Who knows? Kindred may just get those stars. Certainly they've started out right and if they maintain the quality of the food, they'll succeed.

Finally! Vegan In my Hipster Neighborhood

By Patricia L |

Came here on a date on Saturday. We sat outside on the patio, it was cold but the staff were prompt in starting the outdoor heat lamps. I ordered a Bloody Mary which was spicy and delicious, had the popcorn to start off (seasoned popcorn with lime) this reminded me of my childhood. For dinner I ordered the cauliflower steak, it was to be expected but the purée made it great! Loved the sweet potato and beer purée and the sauce on the side. My boyfriend had the jackfruit sandwich.... I jacked him for it! So delicious and a side of chips. Yum! I'm coming back for sure.
