need to check on their amount of food compared to price

By handofgod7 |

We went to King of Tandoor on our trip to Philadelphia. The place looks clean and nicely located. Quality was not bad but quantity surely was. I felt price was on the higher side too. We ordered biryani, though taste good (not excellent!!).....like 4-5 small chicken pieces and small quantity of rice....very disappointed with the amount of food rather than the quality of food. Also, I wish they could make their food less rich keeping a check on their oil and cream. Indian food is not always supposed to be that heavy.

Smells good, tastes good

By Sylvia R |

I love this place, food is great, service is terrific. I highly recommend this place if you happen to be in the neighborhood and have the urge for Indian food. You get 20% off if you pay cash. Not a bad deal!

Very good food in a spacious and gorgeous restaurant

By Nick C |

Took a while to pick something from the very expansive menu. I settled on the Tandoor Shrimp Masala, the Mulligatawny soup and some naan stuffed with potatoes. Everything came out essentially perfect. The rice pudding offered as a complimentary desert was just the proverbial icing on the cake

Its a gem

By mamcneil2018 |

The Chicken masala was the very best I've ever had and I have eaten at so many indian restaurants. There Saag Paneer and Mulligatwny soup also very gd. If you like good Food at good prices this is your spot and its byob how fun.

Best indian BYOB in the whole of Philly

Top notch indian food and service philadelphia has to offer.

Delicious and perfect lunch

By SheWhoTravels |

I stopped by here for lunch today and had a really excellent lunch. I was surprised there were not many more diners. The place is clean, the waiters attentive, and the food excellent. I had the chicken tikiki special lunch, it came out one sizzling hot plate and was juicy and perfect. Go here, you will not be sorry.

tasteless Food

By Jaimin D |

Went last night to have diner before checked in to hotel. It's on downtown street so parking problem in evening. Decor is OK, when people walk you can floor shaking. We were seated right away as it wasn't busy at 830PM. Waiter took order, didnt write it down. We ordered Malai Kofta and Chana Masala. We asked to made spicy. It wasn't cook as we ordered. Both dishes gravy was watery. Kofta had no taste at all. Chana was ok. Taste like food was cooked in hurry, Service was good. Please don't expect authentic Punjabi taste at all.

Great Indian Cuisine

By James E |

As British people visiting the US it was so pleasing to find an Indian restaurant. The food was excellent and the atmosphere pleasant. Service was good also. Highly recommended.

Pretty good

By Dean S |

Introduced coworker to Indian food. We both had the chicken tika masala, garlic naan and mango lassi's. The Chicken tika masala was great. The naan was bland and doughy, no garlic flavor. The lassi was good.

Excellent food

By TchinBou |

Had Mulligatawny soup then the stir fry seafood and a lamb dish. Love the food but sad that we will not to be able to repeat the experience because we live in CT.

Walked out

By outofedinburgh |

We walked out 5 minutes after sitting down due to the extreme rudeness of the server taking our order. I don’t mind someone being quiet or reserved, but having someone roll their eyes and make a face because we’d asked a question about something on the menu was very poor. He clearly didn’t want us to be there. Or anyone else, the place was empty which should have been a warning sign.

Indian Option in Pheli

By shriji2015 |

Located in down town of Pheladelphia , can find some options in Indian food , Be careful in ordering as servimgs are large & dishes served with complementry portion of rice

Dont bother

By urbangirl2015 |

Uninspired and lackng depth of spice. If i eat Indian, i love the cmolexity of flavors that i can't cook myself. There spare many better Indian options, this isnt one of them.

Great service and delicious food

By Diane B |

The staff is wonderful and very attentive. The food is delicious. We ate vegetable curry, fish curry, two types of naan, lamb samosa, and chicken masala. It was all wonderful. Very larger portions.

Great!

By Khloud M |

Great restaurants with delicious food.. I've been there with my family many times .. The reason I gave four stars is because its a little expensive yet I recommend it!

Terrific food and service

By happytraveller01605 |

This gem is tucked away on a quiet street. Inside you'll find a welcoming environment and hosts. The menu is broad. Each of our group of five ordered something different and all of them were delicious. To add to the treat, the table had a bread basket with an array of differently-seasoned naan.

Wonderful Indian Cuisine!

By Speechdr7 |

We ordered two chicken (biryani and tikka masala) and two lamb dishes (garlic curry and dumpakht) and all of them were superb. We also got naan and bhuija. The service was amicable and adequate, and the atmosphere was pleasant. The only thing I would mention is that when the bill was brought, we were told we'd get a 10% discount if we paid in cash. Had we known in advance we'd have gotten the cash, but 80 bucks (including tax and tip) is a bit more than I carry on a daily basis. All in all a great find.

Cash preferred, service average, great food

By Clo S |

Although the service is not super friendly , the dishes are well prepared and tasty. It is worth a visit. Prices are very affordable and they prefer cash. BYOB.

Best surprise

By Abhi B |

Amazing food- especially the Lamb Chops, the best I have ever had. We ordered it to our hotel and will do so every time we are in Philly.

Delicious Indian food, attentive service

By crowngirl619 |

We had a great dinner at this restaurant. It was a five minute walk from our hotel. We had Mulligatawny soup, and a tandoori mixed grill. If you want alcohol with your meal byob. The service was excellent. It was a delicious meal and I highly recommend this restaurant

Consistent, reasonable, and delicious"

By mid-midtraveller |

We go to King of Tandoor at least once a month, and we're always pleased with the good food, service and decent prices. It's a BYOB too, a real neighborhood treat.

Reasonably priced, good quality

By Robert W |

I stopped by King of Tandoor for lunch on a recent visit. I love Indian food, so I'm a bit partial. They have lunch specials, appetizers, soup, and lamb, chicken, seafood, and vegetable entrees, The atmosphere is somewhat plain. The wait staff are all Indians. There were more than 20 tables. This would be a good place to visit before going to a show. I thought the rasmalai was a delicious dessert.

Mediocre Indian food

By Traveler |

The best part about this restaurant was the atmosphere- which was very pleasant. The server was friendly, but communication was difficult. The food was pretty much mediocre for Indian food- I had the Chicken Biryani, which didn't have much flavor and the Mulligatawny soup was okay, but I've had it much better. The Aloo Naan (bread with potato) was pretty bland as well. Would not recommend going if there are other options.

Good curry; great Naan

By Human44 |

I was feeling like a veg meal after a long trans-Atlantic flight. The Aloo Gobi was good, as was the Onion Bhajia. But the naan bread was outstanding. They know how to work their tandoor, all right!

Best Indian in the city

By mike l |

We've only eaten vegetarian stuff here. For veg Indian, it's clearly the best in the city. Great service, very tasty, reasonable prices.

Expected more

By Steve A |

After a few hours at the Barnes Foundation I was hungry and knew K of T was close by, I have to say the entire experience was very average. Service was okay but kind of rushed, I of course had to order tandoor, maybe it was a mistake to get the tandoori mixed grill. It came out on a sizzling plate alas fajita special at any average Mexican joint. The meats were cooked okay but somewhat bland, not what I had hoped.

Tasty food

By KNDC3 |

The King of Tandoor has very tasty food. Both our dishes were excellent, however it doesn't have any thalis or combined options so for example one of the vegetarian dishes was just cheese on a sauce and it would have been great if you could order a small version of that combined with another small vegetable curry. The prices are affordable but again I think a little expensive considering the portions. It would be great if it offered a buffet because the taste is excellent. Only complaint is the bartender or one of the waiters continually make noises as it he were expelling his phlegms and that's gross to hear in a restaurant. Decoration of the restaurant is nice, except for the mannequin in the entrance which looks really weird. If you're in the area it's ok to try.

Not very exciting

By Mohannad L |

Nothing was special about this restaurant, we ordered chicken biryani, the rice was too cooked, dal makhni, we tasted better. Service was ok. The bread basket was nice. Portions were big. Most probably will not go back

Very good indian food in philly museum area

By Kbelton1961 |

We went to King of Tandoor before visiting the Barnes up the street. Pleasant surprise as we couldn't get into another restaurant on the block. Excellent chicken saag (made without ghee cheerfully on request) and cauliflower and peas. Crisp pappadam.

Our staple Indian restaurant

By Michael F |

We've been there many times and always enjoyed the food. While I cannot recommend any particular dish, we have like every dish we've had. The location is good, if you're downtown.

Great find!

By RieRie713 |

Checked out TripAdvisor for a local restaurant and was pleasantly surprised. Their recommendations for entree choices was spot on. Food was delicious, service was great, let us sit and chat, didn't rush. Was a great experience for a first time visit to the city!

Best Tandoori Chicken in whole US!!!!!

By Kashmiri-chilli |

We always order the Tandoori chicken which is the best!!!

This is the place to go if you want to enjoy flavors and conversation.

By Chessplayer17 |

Excellent food. The preparation was superb, featuring a wonderful mix of flavors, rich but neither overpowering nor "hot" in the spicey sense. We had soups (mulligatawny and a chicken soup using mulligatawny as a base, they looked similar but in fact were quite different), chicken tikka and chicken makhanee, and rice pudding for dessert. Each course was delightful. Service was cordial. The restaurant was quiet, a place to go if you really want to enjoy the company of the person who is with you. Excellent choice for a romantic dinner out.

Great food!

By rosannemistretta |

Great food and easy take out. Their raita is very good. Overall a great value, especially with the cash discount.

Very good, but BYOB...

By chessie3315 |

I found the King of Tandoor by accident for dinner one night. It is well located near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and the Museum of Art. This restaurant is clean, quiet, and pleasant with white tablecloths. The service is professional and efficient, and the prices are mid-range. The chicken Karahi, rice, and condiment tray were excellent, but skip the Mulligatawny soup. Bring your own booze (there is a liquor store across the street). I will go there again when I return to Philadelphia.

Very Good Indian Food

By jswider |

About 2 weeks ago my husband and I happened upon this little gem. We have been her twice now and will continue to get our "fix" here on a weekly basis. The food is fresh & the service is excellent (attentive but not intrusive). They go out of their way to make your experience with them a wonderful and satisfying one. The prices are very reasonable and servings are large. The ONLY reason I didn't give them 5 stars is when we asked for the heat level be increased to a 7/8 out of 10, we might have gotten a 3. The food is awesome, we just happen to like very spicy food. This will not deter us, however, from returning or sing the praises of this little place.

YUM!

By KingemRI |

My husband and I try to find an Indian restaurant wherever we go and this is definitely one of the best! It's conveniently located close to lots of attractions. Definitely drop in, the food is fabulous!

Excellent Indian food within walking distance of Barnes Museum

By luvroma2 |

It was a very hot, sunny day and we were looking for a restaurant within walking distance of the new Barnes Foundation museum. I did some research and found this wonderful Indian restaurant. We were there for an early lunch. We were the only patrons dining in but they seemed to do a steady delivery business. We had lunch specials which started with papadams and 3 different spicy "condiments." I had chicken Achari which was boneless chicken breast cooked with vegetables and spices and my husband had lamb saag which was chunks of marinated lamb simered with spinach and spices. The lunch special is served with the most wonderful naan bread. We also orderd an onion kulcha bread which was so, so good, Both lunch entrees were under $10 and were a very generous portion. The food was very fresh and delicious. I cannot wait to return. They have non alcholic beverages, but no bar. It is a BYOB. They are open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

A very good Indian restuarant!

Fine Indian Dining Experience

By Wayne B |

Very please with my experience at King of Tandoor as a first time visitor. The atmosphere and décor were very calming to an otherwise hectic day. Service was very timely and friendly. Our waiter explained the menu in detail along with the various spice levels. I ordered the Chicken Tikka and it was excellent; spiced exactly how requested. Family style white rice and spiced condiments with freshly baked naan rounded out a very pleasing meal.

Disappointing

By beleagueredmom |

I had lunch here recently. The food is okay. The biryani was dry and not very good. The curry dishes were okay. The portions were small. The prices are way too high for lunch. On weekdays, they apparently have a lunch special but no special or buffet for weekend lunch. This was my second time eating at this restaurant and, as I left, I made a mental note to skip it in the future.

Pretty decent curry house BYOB

By GunnHa |

The best bhajees we've had in a long time!! And very generous portions. Had chicken shagoti and chicken achari which were quite similar in taste, but ok. Naan bread was a bit doughy. We got plenty of rice. The service was pretty good. Brought our own bottle of wine and were presented with beautiful chrystal glasses for it. Ok prices. Would come back for the bhajees!

this place has some of the best food ever

king of tandoor & biryani house is the best Indian restaurant in Philadelphia downtown....... the have byob

Excellent Indian

By xtalguy_11 |

There is a reason why this restaurant is rated highly by the locals and various sites. The food was authentic, fresh, and served with a smile. Everything we ordered was quite flavorful and worthy of a thumbs up. A good value for the price. And very happy with the amount of attention the host and wait staff gave us. Not certain why the place was mostly empty when we arrived at dinner time. Given our experience, this place should take high priority when looking for an excellent Indian experience.

Good food, nice staff

By Judy R |

In the context of all of the Indian food I have ever eaten, on a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 7. I thought the food was good and reasonably priced for dinner. The restaurant was nice, clean, and the staff was very friendly.

Flavorful, Attentive Wait Staff, Clean

By snjmom |

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to King of Tandoor. By all appearances, the restaurant was clean and in a safe location. The wait staff was VERY attentive and friendly. The food was flavorful and portions were plentiful. I enjoyed a bowl of Malagatawny soup. It was piping hot and delicious. I also had chicken cooked in the Tandoori oven, and I ate chicken vindaloo. The vindaloo could have been a bit hotter (spice). The naan was excellent and the sauces to accompany the naan were amazing. Basmati rice and acari were also on the table. Indian rice pudding for dessert topped off my experience. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Street parking is available for a fee at the kiosks and a small lot is only a block from the restaurant. This restaurant is centrally located near many businesses and law offices.

Great Variety

By Jlp_33333 |

I enjoyed the food at King of Tandoor and will be back to try more! The selection of lunch specials was great and the food was delicious. I had the Chicken Saag which was very good and also recommend the mango lassi.

Hidden gem - very reasonable prices

By ers1978 |

The portions aren't huge, but the flavors are great. Only downside was the super slow service. We ate our food in less time than it took to get our cheque. Overall good value.

Good Indian Food Near Museums

By Ed S |

My son and I ate here between visits to the Rodin Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was a pleasant break from looking at sculptures and paintings. The mixed tandoori grill was excellent, the naan was good, the mango chutney was good. Our waiter brought us a small dish of rice pudding for dessert with the check at no charge. The portions are not huge, but it was enough, and the price was reasonable.

Indian Cuisine Newbie!

By Tgriff3 |

I live in a very rural area without access to interesting cuisine so when I travel I enjoy trying new food. The Kiing of Tandoor didn't fail to impress me. The restaurant has an attractive and warm atmosphere, a small dining area but with plenty of privacy and space between tables. The wait staff is outstandingly attentive. The food was incredible and made to order. I prefer very spicy food while some of my companions prefer milder flavors. Each of us was more than pleased. We were not aware that we could bring our own bottle of wine as no alcohol is served, so I do suggest if you want wine with your meal to take it with you. If I'm in Philly again I will return to King of Tandoor!

Stay Away from King of Tandoor, Philadelphia

By senkk |

We visited King of Tandoor Recently with some of our friends based on some local ratings. To our surprise we found the food most ordinary compared to the price. Also, it was observed later that they changed the tips on our paid voucher to a different number. I asked the restaurant to send me the voucher...they refused. Stay away fm King of Thief!!!

Excellent Indian restaurant

By Nancy B |

We found King of Tandoor on Tripadvisor during a mother/daughter weekend in Philadelphia. We made an on line reservation and were greeted by a friendly waiter and shown to a cloth covered table for two. We ordered vegetable samosas as a starter and a lamb dish, an eggplant dish, raita and naan for dinner. All generous portions were beautifully prepared, and scrumptious! The attentive waiters kept our water glasses filled and thoughtfully and promptly removed empty dishes. When we declined dessert the waiter insisted "Dessert is on us! Please have some chocolate ice cream or rice pudding." We heard similar offers at other tables. A parking lot less than a half block away ($6.50 for parking after 5 pm) is an excellent alternative to searching for scarce on street parking places. And, my pregnant daughter was thrilled with the clean, well stocked restrooms! An excellent dining experience!

Delicious Indian cuisine, very friendly staff, BYOB.

By AndWhere2Next |

Fabulous Indian BYOB. Each time we go back, we are impressed with the quality of food, the service, and the value. The samosa, bhuija, and lamb dumphakt are particularly good. In addition to the food, I really appreciate the fact that this is an upscale neighborhood restaurant - atmosphere is elegant and romantic. Further, the manager remembers us whenever we dine there and always comes over to our table to welcome us and make sure that everything is to our satisfaction. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to friend or family.

If you love Indian dishes

By Antoinette-Marie |

It is a good place to eat Indian food, the service is fine. The place is somehow hidden behind a Subway and attached to a hotel. The food was tasty, the portion good but I have to say that nothing stands out, the restaurant has bearely lights coming from outside. The prices are reasonable, there is big tables for large groups.

Delightful Indian food

By Janet L |

In Philadelphia for the weekend. Looking for a casual, neighborhood Indian restaurant. The ambiance was inviting. Service was very efficient. We ordered tandoori chicken and told in advance it would be 12 minutes. The naan bread was delicious! The chicken was a full half chicken and loved the spice. The breast was juicy! Plenty of rice. Highly recommend for a tasty and casual evening. And we have lunch for tomorrow.

Pleasant Surprise

By Traveler_Worldwide |

King of Tandoor on 1824 Callowhill St. is only a couple blocks from several Philadelphia tourist attractions like the Barnes Foundation Museum and the Rodin Museum; it is less than 10 minute walk even at a leisurely pace. I was happy to find a restaurant offering Indian cuisine and walked in for lunch on my way back from Rodin Museum. I am glad I did. This is a spacious restaurant that has been in business for 6 years. It can comfortably accommodate 75 people. The décor is pleasant with gleaming white table covers and cloth napkins. Unlike many other Indian restaurants, this place does not offer a buffet. The menu is ala carte but reasonably extensive. They offer nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages. They also offer delivery service within a 1 mile radius. I had a lukewarm welcome. A little smile would have cheered me more but I ignored that, though it made me a bit unsure of how the lunch would turn out. I ordered lamb keema stuffed samosas for my appetizer, mulligatawny soup and lamb in spinach preparation for the main course. The service was prompt. The samosa arrived within 2 minutes, the soup in 10 minutes and the main course in 20 minutes. I must emphasize that each of these items were freshly prepared and were quite delicious. The lamb spinach preparation was accompanied by basmati rice and fresh, warm naan and there was no extra charge for these two items. The service also became more agreeable as the meal progressed. The lunch cost me around $20 not including tips, which I consider moderately expensive, but I left a very satisfied customer.

Great Indian Food

King of Tandoor is a gem in my neighborhood. The food is outstanding as is the service. The prices are surprising very reasonable, particularly for the quality.

Delicious Indian Food

By Aamina M |

Well prepared Indian food. The Tikka chicken and mango lassi was a winner and a must try. The service was excellent. Got a 10% discount for paying cash. Will definately go back.
