quick, good food and watch the chef at work

By Julian W |

Enjoyed sitting at the bar watching the chef do his magic. Also had take out. Food very good, nice range on the menu.

We ordered take out

By Robert H |

Salmon nigiri shushing was pretty good but the ikura was not as good as we get in West Palm Beach. The restaurant offered tempura and other Japanese dishes

Huge selection of sushi!

By RealtorJim |

My wife and I went here for the first time on 8/26/17. The service was excellent. They do offer a full bar. My wife had one of their specialty drinks and enjoyed it. I had a Sapporo. They started us out with a bowl of miso soup that is very good. Then a small salad for each of us. The salad was good too. We ordered a couple of sushi rolls. I think one was called the salmon lovers roll. It was delicious. The other one, I can't remember the name, was also very good.

Great food & excellent service!

By Connie C |

Food was fresh & delicious. Their service was excellent. The best service in San Francisco's restaurants by far during our 5 day trip. Great value, great food, & great service!

Delicious, fresh & perfect

By AndreaUbok |

And then you read like a Bible pages and pages food. It was difficult to choose there were 60 special rolls, hand rolls, bento boxes, ramen, noodles…. We walked in past the sushi bar and took a seat. Covid protocols for followed. Restaurant was clean and service was perfect. We started with miso soup which was silky & delicious. My husband tuna, crab, salmon roll was fresh and delicious. I enjoyed my kibbu special with albacore, crab & special sauce. Our entrées was so delicious we wanted to keep going.

Fantastic

By IdWarrior1 |

My daughter and I were just looking for a relaxed late afternoon snack, and we settled on Kippu. Great find it is. The service is quick and friendly, the maki fresh and delicious, and the setting pleasantly busy. I’d eat here again.

Bento lunches

By Ka H |

We had a delightful and delicious lunch of Bento Boxes for a very reasonable price while in Japan Town. The wait staff were very efficient and accommodated that we three only wanted two lunches. It was plenty to share and the variety was nice.

Full Range of Japanese Dishes; Fair Prices, Good Service and Good Food

By Stella S |

Service was very accommodating and friendly as I arrived after main lunch hour. The menu is a broad range of Japanese specialities. I had the sushi which good for the price point, which is very reasonable at this restaurant. The bento boxes are similar to the fast food places, I experienced in Tokyo and for a fast lunch and range I would recommend.

5/5 New wave Japanese restaurant!

By Juha K |

Had a plate with Beef Teriyaki, few basic sushi rolls and tempura. Wife had few different sushi rolls. Everything was super good and tasty, miso soup was on the house and tasted eexcellllent! Service was good and fast, foods came also pretty fast. I was pleased about prices aswell. Wife didnt complain anything either so total 5/5! 😊🍽

The can accommodate a table of 10

By LoriKSacto |

I've eaten here twice. Both times I would describe the food as average to good, the sake terrible, but with good & efficient service. This place suited our needs as a large group this past weekend, but it is not very special. The rolls were better than the box dinners. The tempura was actually nice. I doubt I will return for a third time, though.

Food

The food is amazing, they give you a welcome soup it’s so delicious, and the staff it so helpful, they explain everything, great place to have a japanesse dinner

Delicious!

By kaceface589 |

We stumbled upon this restaurant in Japantown. The service was amazing! Our waiter was constantly checking on us and all of his tables to make sure we had everything we needed! The sushi was delicious and the Bento boxes were HUGE! We each got a box, one with potstickers and one with a California roll. I would go back for sure! Their menu is so huge you'll have to go back more than twice to be able to enjoy it all!

Great discovery!

By Suzie F |

We spent 2 days in San Francisco, staying within walking distance of Japantown. We decided to stop into this great spot for lunch after looking at the menu and speaking with the friendly staff. The food did not disappoint! Whether you choose a Bento Box, sushi, or a noodle soup - everything was delicious. We highly recommend!

Awful experience

By Valeriia D |

It’s a bad place. Rice is overcooked, Takoyaki are undercooked. Avocado is rotten. Tables are dirty and sticky.

Trip back to japan

By Esteban Alonso F |

Having been to japan twice, I can assure you that this restaurant is on par with the street food of japan, but by no means I mean its bad, the street food in japan is some of the best you can have anywhere, since they have high standards in pretty much everything. I had the super bowl(or special bowl), rice with sashimi, excellent meal and not so expensive. the staff is very polite although the waiter speaks a little bit to soft, all in all i felt like i was back in japan for a few minutes while the meal lasted.

Delicious fast sushi!

By ccbarb1 |

The Kippu Restaurant was recommended to us by our hotel. The sushi chef was amazing! He made lots of great sushi within minutes of our orders--usually sushi takes a little longer, but these sushi were extremely good. We kept ordering and trying out new things. At first we sat at the sushi bar to have a drink and decided to move to a table where we ordered a couple of salmon dishes that others had ordered and then kept going and ordering more. The food was plentiful and delicious. Service was good. Prices were good. If we lived nearby we would come back many times.

Outstanding!!

By Noztrvl N |

I expected to find good Japanese food in San Francisco's Japanese district, but I did not expect it to be this good! I have traveled extensively to Japan recently so I feel like I have a sense of authentic and tasty Japanese cuisine. I have found it stateside in Kippu. There were many choices on the menu, but I decided to eat simply, so I had gyoza and a couple of specialty sushi rolls along with probably the tastiest miso soup I've had anywhere. The service was thoughtful and attentive, and the prices were quite reasonable. I can't wait to return to San Francisco and Kippu, and I would love to try one of the raw fish and veggie bowls next time.

Great food at reasonable prices

By michaellH5949HV |

Ordered bento specials of teriyaki chicken and salmon. Prices were better than others in Japan center and take out easily available. Service was excellent and friendly

Excellent udon

By Mary F |

I would go back if I were hungry for some good rolls, the soup was delicious, the tempura was very light and tasty, and the hot sake and tea helped my cold disappear

Service is efficient!

By Jo B |

Stayed at nearby Hotel Kabuki and asked for a sushi & sashimi recommendation and we're referred to Kippu. We were seated quickly (8pm. Sat.). They asked for drink order and we still hadn't perused the menu when asked if we were ready to order. Food came quickly and was fresh and delicious! Noticed the check was already slipped on our table while we were eating and table was quickly cleared as we finished. We were even asked if the next party could be seated so we didn't linger after eating. We found it comical how "efficient" they were. We had a nice dinner and didn't mind their quick service and wanting to feed others, but wouldn't chose Kippu for a relaxing slow, lingering dinner!

Nice Japanese food

By Pedro Luis López Cruz |

Had dinner there twice during our stay in San Francisco. Tried some different things (gyoza, teriyaki, ramen, udon) and everything tasted excellent. The staff was friendly and attentive. The restaurant has a simple industrial feel to it.

Great genuine food

By GusOFswitzerland |

Delicious vegetable Udon ,California rolls, Bento box(chicken tariyaki+tempura) and tekka don , unagi don. Don’t bring to customers the bill !! during their dinner because it seems that you push them to leave and make your table free again for the next client. This behavior must radically change quickly if you want people to come back again.

very tasty,really enjoyed

By mariomad |

Decided to explore Japan Town and had a late lunch (2pm) at Kippu with my best friend on a very hot day in SF. What a lovely surprise. You are welcome with a smile from start to end. We ordered Bento Boxes and it was really nice and tasty + 2 drinks . The lovely waitress was so nice and pleasant. We had a lovely experience and not expensive at all around $25 each. I really recommend this place located in a square in a corner. As they say you always judge a restaurant to his bathroom and it was spotless. A gem in San Francisco located across the road from Hotel Kabuki !

Japantown Eatery

By PurplePlanet12 |

This restaurant was very good. They had many choices on the menu, and were friendly to all types of diets and food preferences. The restaurant did get busy at around 6:00, and only having one waiter, we did not get some of the beverages we had asked for. Nonetheless, this was a very good restaurant.

Wonderful Surprise!!!

By Steven G |

Food was awesome!! The Flaming Dragon was the Best. Enjoyed every serving and service was very efficient.

Great Japanese food

By Excursion425430 |

After reading trip advisor reviews and coming to San Francisco I had to try it. Very good (excellent) food. All round great service. Place was clean and menus were very detailed with pictures for all the sushi rolls. Great lunch! Thank you.

No sushi for you!

By Re Y |

Trip advisor says this place is open. It is closed on Tuesdays. Disappointed. Four groups of people came up alongside me, thinking it was open. Please Japantown, keep your weird closed days to Monday 😣

Great food and very good value.

By davyp777 |

As well as the food, what I liked about the service was that there was no over burdening staff touting to enhance their tips. You placed your order and your food arrived without any hassle.p I stayed in Japantown for two nights and used this restaurant on both evenings. Menu was varied, and looking at all of the other dishes being served, the food looked great. It can get busy, but the staff always seem to manage to find a seat. The decor isn’t fancy, but I go to a restaurant to taste the food, not to admire the wallpaper. Great value and very good food.

Great but pricey

By woodthorn |

The staff were friendly enough, but it felt a little rushed (or perhaps efficient?). There was a huge selection of food to chose from, and the food did not disappoint. It tasted fresh and had a lot of flavor in both of our meals. The only down side was it is a little pricey, but that seems to be the way restaurants are in San Francisco.

Happy Experience!

By William S |

Found Kippu near Japantown and by TripAdvisor ratings. We’ve lived in Japan so we know the cuisine pretty well. The atmosphere at Kippu is pretty casual as are the owners. They greeted us airily and seated us promptly. The menu is pretty extensive and offers quite a range of items. We tried several of the nigiri as well as the karaage which was pretty good. The sushi was also good by American standards and for the price. We also had a cold Asahi and some warm sake from a brewery near Kobe, Japan. Overall, the experience was good and there was good value-for-money. Despite the appeal to tourists this is a pretty good restaurant.

Fab. U. Lous!

By Screwtape316 |

What a great little joint. Hidden little gem. Great sushi, wonderful service, even though the place was JAMMED on a Tuesday night. I was one of the few gaijin. I'd come back again, for certain.

Amazing food and service!

By Mindy K |

The food is amazing! Best sushi I have ever had! Loved the tempura and miso soup as well. Very reasonable prices and delightful service! Would definitely recommend!!!

OK Place

By Glenn M |

Food was good and reasonably priced, service was fast, but the ambiance was just average. There are some more popular places in the mall

fuel your hunger for sushi

By BestCal1978 |

Happened upon an informal restaurant in Japantown. Food was excellent and filling. Staff were busy but friendly. Had the sashimi-sushi platter; the sushi was fresh and tasty. I would definitely return.

Fresh sushi, low atmosphere

By FuzzyCouple |

First, the sushi. It was fresh and tasted excellent, which is no less than what I expect in San Francisco. It was made adequately, but without any extra flourishes and some of the nigiri was made without precision, which was odd. While the basic sushi is very good, the sauces here were not up to par (like the bbq on the unagi). This is however, not where I'd go for any kind of special event. It's fine for family dining, but not really a couples place. The decor is basic and kind of worn, and the evening we were there, it could have been cleaner. Service was sporadic, at best. It was no better and no worse than the sushi we've had in many places; if you are looking for a special sushi experience while on vacation, this is probably not it.

Good value, good service, good food.

By Amphiraion |

We decided to stay just at the western edge of Japantown. Today, for a late lunch we went to Kippu. The food, the service, and the ambience were very good and so was the price. It was our first meal in this visit to San Francisco. We would definitely return.

Incredibly delicious!

By chriskern1508 |

Great starters and extremely tasty rolls! We also had the burning one, which was not only very tasty but also had an effect!

Excellent Japanese Food

By Dan W |

I highly recommend Kippu! Very delicious, fresh food and superbly friendly service. Among the dishes I can vouch for: miso, gyoza, tendon, udon and tempura. It’s an easy stroll from the main mall of Japantown, surrounded by other interesting businesses.

Delicious, fresh sushi

By Malinda P |

After a long flight, this was a perfect lunch. The staff was very friendly, the food delicious and fresh and the service was great.

Decent sushi

By gsconnor2016 |

The Toro and Soft Shelled Crab were excellent. The roll was OK and the Chicken Karage was just OK. (My bad for ordering 2 deep fried items) Like most restaurants in SF, the staff is very nice and efficient, but they make it clear that you need to leave as soon as you are done so more customers can come in. This was a good restaurant, but I wish I would have gone into the West Mall 75' away to try some of the restaurants there.

Disappointing

By bulldogtwo |

Yes I would have to say disappointing. Two things that stand out in my mind. One, we all ordered a Bento box, I like them because you get a good variety of food. It was somewhat tasteless however. I just was not impressed. Plenty of food, decent price for what we got but...Second, and probably the most unforgivable, NO JAPANESE RICE. The heck!! First Japanese place that I have been that did not serve Japanese rice. The short grain sticky rice. This was a cheap brand of a jasmine. I hate to say even jasmine because it wasn't even that, California rice? Really?! C'mon. For this reason I gave it TWO stars. And this is in Japantown of SFO. So no, Two is the best you're getting from me on this.

Lunch

By Stefan D |

We went there for lunch and tried some their lunch boxes. The Tonkatsu, the Teriyaki and the California Rolls were good. We didn't like the Chinese style gyoza though. Unfortunately they also out of Coke. But overall it was a good experience plus the pricing was excellent.

Avoid

By exotissima1 |

Good value lunches mostly between $6.50 and $8.50, or so we thought until we tried to eat our bentos which were mediocre. The salmon was overcooked with a poor sauce. The tempura prawn was thin with an awful sauce and the tonkatsu was dry and tough. The California roll rice was not properly seasoned and the miso soup was poorly flavoured. Asians might eat here as it is Korean run but not the japanese who, as we later discovered, were all eating at Kokomo osakaya and mifune in the West Mall.

Never disappointed

By lsolari66 |

Every time in San Francisco this is a regular stop either alone or with family. This time with family. We are fans. The Miso soup is superb. Everything is fresh and so good and there is an ample choice.

Good Sushi

By Laney86 |

Our first evening in San Francisco I wanted sushi. This place caught my eye, because of all the colorful pictures of their specialty rolls. I ordered 2, I think it was the Shrek & the Mexican. They were both good, and I also liked that you got a small salad and soup with your meal. Prices were very reasonable.

Sushi in Japantown

By Chris H |

After coming to SF many times, this was actually my first visit to Japantown. I enjoyed the spider roll and an Asahi. The service was fine and the food was as good as I've had.

Great food, great service

By Santiago M |

We sat down and we were immediately greeted with miso soup. This made a great first impression, the weather was awful that day. The food was great and the service even better. Would go back any day. And I think Obama ate at this place...

2nd test validated because still very good, even 6 years later.

By DavidCaroL_62 |

Coming 6 years ago and already very satisfied, we wanted to come back to taste Japanese flavors again. Always very good, dishes with taste are cooked almost in front of you, with nice portions. The choice is very interesting and varied, mixed dishes of different compositions which allows to drip several specialties. Tastes and freshness are present, even in Japanese drinks, soft or with alcohol. The welcome is with a smile and with a simple but efficient service. I advise anyone who wants to drip at the Japanese restaurant worthy of the name, to do again without hesitation.

Loved the pokey roll

By Marilyn85 |

I've eaten here twice and am very impressed with the quality and quantity of food for the price. I plan to return often.

Awesome sushi

By guap0bumsies |

Freshest sushi ever fast service at bar great sushi chef Tom is super nice and great hands - prices are usual high but we missed the lunch specials which are reasonable and good

Great Food and Service!

By Alicia W |

We flew in from Orlando and we were starving after 6 hours on a plane. The food is fabulous and service is top notch! Tom and Joon were very personable, food is authentic and they made us feel very welcome (and full 👍🏻). We will for sure be back!

Just Amazing! Best Sushi!

By YoKern |

Walk over to Japantown and found this gem. Everything was perfect, sushi, teriyaki, gyoza. Service was phenomenal, you can tell that the staff is really dedicated to this place. Decor was beautiful, small place with lots of character and friendly staff. All sushi rolls were amazing. The fire dragon one came on fire, literally! An awesome surprise as we closed our visit to SF for the marathon.

Good Bento Box lunch

By Andrew R |

We had a lunch stop at Kippu which is a friendly unpretentious place by the Japan Center with lots of options for vegetarians We both had Bento boxes (there is a wide range). Both were very good and reasonable value. The Miso soup was excellent

Good sushi in Japantown San Francisco

By Krzys T |

Very nice place with friendly service. A nice gesture in the beginning was that miso soup and salad were served on a house. We ordered 10 different special and regular rolls and all were pretty tasty. There are a few more choices around but you can't go wrong with this one.

Got yelled at :(

By Kavindya T |

The female staffers were wonderful. We had a boat so there was a lot of sushi to get through. We had food left on the table and we were still finishing up and then the manager (I think he was the manager) yelled at us asking us to finish and leave and that he had guests waiting. We were shocked to respond. Then he comes back and yells at us again. There were no guests waiting and there were 3-4 empty tables. It was so embarrassing for us since the entire restaurant was looking. It was truly shocking to be yelled at in this way. If he had just asked us - we would have happily obliged but truly disappointed. We were hosting a guest from out of town and it ruined the entire experience.

Fabulous Food at a great price

By Savagemushrooms |

If something is rubbish like Shadowbrook restaurant in Capitola I will say it. If something is excellent like Kippu Sushi Restaurant then I will say this too. The food here is Excellent. We had tempura prawns cooked to perfection. Miso soup which was very good. Yakitori again good. Chefs choice of Sashimi FANTASTIC. Mackerel and Eel Nigiri Brilliant! Cold Sake three Kirin and a bill of $94 without tip. Value for money? Yes!! The evening was only spoilt by anbadjoining table of six exceptionally loud and very manly looking women, not really the fault of the restaurant. Eat here and you will be happy.

Surprise Wonderful Sushi! Great Prices and Service in Japantown!

By Eisa B |

You wouldn't expect to find such a unique and wonderful place in the most tourista place--Japantown in San Francisco. Stumbled upon this place during the Cherry Blossom Fest. They had draft beers for $4 and a Flaming Dragon Roll, Spciy Scallop and other totally unique rolls and sashimi right on the menu. Lots of local Japanese people popped in and seemed to be regulars placing large orders. The sushi chef never stops. Four of these guys going nonstop. Awesome Sushi. Loud and casual. Fun and Will Not say Enough Good About This Place!

Great food, lovely staff

By GaeFire |

Had a very pleasant business dinner. Service was super fast, food fantastic. Chefs preparing it all in front of you. Location can be improved but definitely Yes yes and yes again.

Sushi is very good!

By must_travel_soon_10 |

Uni is a good indicator of seafood quality and here it was very good. Maguro, Hamachi and unagi were also very good. Not expensive and service is very efficient. Definitely a place to return to.

Not transcendental.

By Michael R |

Restaurant was recommended by my hotel nearby as the best. Figured if there was any place to get awesome sushi it was here. It was good. It may even be the best in the Japanese part of SF. But it was not better than what I can get here in landlocked central Ohio.

Best sushi restaurant in JapanTown?

By jesingson |

It possibly could be. We did some pretty extensive searching for the best Japanese option in JapanTown and this restaurant popped up. Was it good? Yep it was delicious. We mostly stuck to riceless options like peppercorn tuna and the albacore roll. They were delicious. The only complaint I had was that perhaps we overstayed our welcome by ordering too slowly or piecemeal, since we felt kinda rushed towards the end. Boo. But if I get it - there were a good number of diners for a Sunday night.

Sensational Sushi

By Tripletravelfun |

This sushi place located in Japantown is delicious. We ordered the baked scallop topped sushi and it was one of the best rolls we have ever eaten. So we ordered another one. Everything was super fresh. We ordered a variety of rolls. Quick service and inventive sushi chefs made for a an enjoyable dinner.

A taste of Japan

By JEORGE M |

Heard of Japan town and wanted to check it out. Once there, I ask for where to eat, there are a lot of Japanese places there. So, on the recommendation of a local, we went to Kippu. The service was fast and the food tasty. The sushi was very fresh and nice cuts too. I would come back here again.

Good Japanese dinner

By LukeS90 |

I've been in this restaurant with a Japanese friend after choosing it randomly in Japantown. We shared shrimps tempura, gyoza, udon and tonkatsu and were all good and tasty. We were really satisfied in the end. I suggest you to go there if you are in Japantown and want to eat some simple JFood.

Great sushi at very reasonable prices

By Lasse F |

Liked this place - great variation in menu and lots of excellent maki's. Service is very fast - Maybe a bit too fast even. It's not the place if you want to sit and enjoy your evening in a slow pace. They're too effective for that which is the reason for only dealing 4 stars.

Still trying to keep it down

By JorgeDeJesus |

3 rolls between 2 people and only 7 pieces eaten. Not fresh, nor tasty. Big letdown to say the least. That's the short version. The long version. Seeing this was a roll house, me and my wife checked local ratings, saw this option and went for it. Love roll, a sea weed roll and the please don't try this, Lion King roll. It was the challenge of which roll was less impressive and to be brutally honest, we even debated using a finger to purge. Price for those three rolls, two misos, teo orders of nigiri and a beer was less than $50 which should have been the warning. Although lesson learne: just because a place is located in Japantown doesn't mean it'll be delicious. Pretty low in all time ratings of meals in our lives.

Welcoming on a stormy night!

By Grainne Marie M |

Arrived here in the middle of a storm and really appreciated the efficiency of the waitstaff who brought bowls of warm miso soup before we had even looked at menus. Quite a selection of sushi here, a lot of it deep fried, which we avoided in general. The rolls we ordered were pretty good, wasn't as impressed with the breaded chicken

Very good and for non-sushi lovers too!

By David N |

The restaurant was very good and in the heart of japantown. It felt authentic and the sushi we got was high quality with a low price. I like sushi, and my family does not. We all left satisfied with different meals. My one complaint was the waiter was overworked and he didn’t speak good English enough to keep up. Just a tip: Japantown has a lot of auto-burglaries, so play it safe and keep your valuables close.

Pretty Good Sushi

By Chaz B |

I stopped in for dinner while traveling to Dreamforce this year. The food is pretty good, not the best and far from being the worst. Nice, friendly staff make for a comfortable environment. I was in Mineapolis last week, had sushi at Sevens. This place is better.

Good sashimi, great value

By Jia H |

Ordered a sashimi platter to try the quality and freshness, and we were satisfied. After which, we ordered oyster shooters, sushi plate and beef bento. All items are recommended.

Great Japanese food

By nicdev83 |

Great Japanese food. We had gyoza teriyaki chicken and beef udon. Fantastic service and quick to cook!

Ordinary sushi

By eke-ono |

The tuna tasted frozen. Nothing special for a Japan town restaurant. One time visit, The beer was good.

Wonderful lunch!

By AMG |

After beeing ignored at Benihana we went to Kippu. The service was quick and very nice. The food was freshly made and very tastful. Have lunch here if you are visiting Japan town!

if jesus made food this is the food he would make

By antoclarke12 |

if there is a bento box sized hole in your life, there is no place better to fill it with than Kippu. On the seventh day, God rested, and He rested at Kippu. When moses parted the red sea, at the end, he found Kippu. Barack Obama eats at Kippu. I rest my case.

Excellent miso soup, fresh salad, yummy desert

By JKSF |

I heard this place use organic tofu and 3 different kinds of miso paste for miso soup. Salad is so fresh and dressing was excellent. Must try the fried ice cream.

Greatest Sushi of All Time

By Arkangil21484 |

Japantown, google it mapquest it gps it, get your behind to KIPPU!! You will not be sorry! A great lunch destination, thats when they offer lunch specials tasty "lunch box" combos. But make sure to treat yourself to a specialty roll, I love the Washington roll the best also the Flaming dragon if you want the show! Trust me! Enjoy with green tea for an authentic experience. Staff is very nice, it looks like a small simple place, extremely underrated!

Tasty sushi and nice service 👍

By Maciu$ |

Tasty sushi and sashimi... recommend Ai Roll :) Very nice service too... we will come back sure...😀

Nice food

By Guille W |

The sushi roll that is served in flames is delicious. And the sushi was great (unagi, uni, Suzuki and Toro we tried).

Nice evening

By garethellis36 |

This is a cool place. Atmosphere was informal, especially at the bar where we could watch the chaos of the chefs at work :-) Food was tasty, highlights being the sushi roll we had as an extra to our "dinner bento" (large portion by the way!). Bags of character and friendly, affable staff.

Good Sashimi

By lisanoodle |

We had the 18 pieces Chef's choice sashimi. The yellow tail tuna is my hubby's favorite. I like the super white tuna. Forget the fresh oyster it's as small as a dim. The Rainbow rolls were good.

Quick dinner

By Karen M |

Had a good dinner here Service was very fast Salmon teriyaki was well cooked Sushi was fresh Ebi good Nice venue

Amazing food and service

By Kelly B |

Beautiful food, we tried the goyza’s and sushi, was really nice. The eel was also really nice - highly recommended!

Very RUDE

By Irina Torres |

We lived at Japan town for a week and dine at this place twice with my husband and son. The food was good, however service was terrible. Both times we came around 830 pm and were very rushed through our meal because restaurant stuff so obviously wanted to close the place. Second time we addressed the issue with the stuff however our feedbacks were ignored. It was very VERY RUDE so very disappointing!

worst sukiyaki

By Billy Z |

it was a rather quiet friday evening in Japantown, and we walked into this seemingly authentic Japanese restaurant. The Unagi Lover (Avacado, crab meat and Eel roll) started off well, The Teriyaki chicken and Salmon Sashimi bento set was reasonably good, but the Sukiyaki which came with chunk of beef instead of the usual thin slices was tough! At the end of the meal I told the waitress that the Sukiyaki beef was too tough and she gaves me a strange look, oh well, I would have given it a poor rating on this alone.

Lunch

By Jin C |

Passed by Kippu and decided to stop for lunch. Service prompt. My husband and I had the miso soup which was very good. We shared an appetizer of fried octopus which was tasty. He ordered a chicken, egg and rice dish which was average tasting. I ordered the double hamachi roll which was delicious. The fish was very fresh and tasty. Would definitely return for the sushi.

Excellent Sushi

By S C |

Sushi was outstanding. Little to no atmosphere but my oh my the food is fabulous. We had a bottle of wine that was overpriced... But we have noticed on this trip that all restaurant prices have gone up hugely in comparison to the UK. Food was dreamily delicious

Great Sushi in Japan Town

By HHWpk |

We liked this place so much we broke our rule that you never eat at the same place twice when traveling and went there for dinner two nights in a row. It's not fancy or big but it's a great simple place with amazing sushi. Highly recommend

Excellent Japanese cuisine

By AleGio13 |

We loved this place, located in Japan Town. Over time we've tried various Japanese restaurants in various cities and we found this one truly excellent. Sushi and rolls are presented in a rather "plain" and simple way, and this highlights the actual taste of the ingredients. Great dinner, reasonable prices. Highly recommended!

Something special

By SFvisitor650 |

We especially liked the hot pots. Very authentic. Prices good. Service good. A pleasant change of pace from usual fare

Sushi at lunch

By Robert H |

This was a return visit for us. We had eaten here a couple of years ago and decided to return. No regrets, still great food, good service, and a good value. If your in Japan Town this is a good place to visit.

Great Sushi!

By Jason T |

I walked across the street from the hotel I am staying at for a bite to eat. The waitress came right up and took my drink order. They brought out miso soup and a small green salad that was "on the house, the waitress said." They were both really tasty! The beer I ordered was ice cold as was the frosty mug she brought with it. I ordered 2 maguro's, an ebi and a charisma roll with jalapeno, tobiko and rooster hot sauce. Everything was so fresh and tasted so good. The service was excellent! The food was excellent and I will definitely be back again.

Good rolls & bentos. But not very authentic.

By Eric Tabet |

A large choice of rolls and bentos. Service approximate and rushed. We were expecting authentic Japanese tradition in Japantown and got disappointed in that regards. Good food but not any different from another sushi place (here korean owners).

Good Japantown sushi

By AitchMack |

Extensive menu and tons of rolls, decently priced and close to Kabuki. Also nice used bookstore steps away.

A beautiful discovery in Japantown

By stellem71 |

The dishes are excellent and hearty. Homemade cuisine: tempura, particularly delicious chicken! Very welcoming and energetic boss.

Great service and tasty bento box

By Axel8807 |

After being seated we were promptly helped and asked for our drinks while we looked at the menu and the bento box was an excellent choice for an early dinner. Tempura was delicious and diverse. Service was careful and attentive. We enjoyed our choices very much.

Excellent for lunch!

By Lee T |

We wandered through Japantown looking at menus, and decided on this restaurant. The lunch boxes offered variety. The salmon teriyaki and tempura was fresh and flavorful. We struggled with chopsticks but it was fun to try! A really good value and quiet enough for us to carry on a conversation.

Great food quality

In the middle of the Japan Town. The choice from Bento to Sushi/Sashimi is huge. Very tasty although the owner didn’t seem to be Japanese.

Delicious food, good atmosphere, good value

By Jenny from Santa Cruz |

We had delicious food here! My boyfriend ordered some of their special sushi offerings, one of which involved the plate being set on fire and slightly cooking the seafood. And I had some killer tempura. There was a short wait to get in, so you might want to plan for that. It definitely felt like this was more of a "neighborhood restaurant" than a super tourist spot.

Really excellent dinner in Japantown!

By bethany2601 |

Ordered 4 special rolls and udon noodles. Dinner came with small salad & miso soup. Although the greens were slightly brown the dressing was quite good. Not that usual ginger orangey stuff. The miso soup was the first surprise. It was excellent. The same soup we've all had before, but elevated. Like the difference between Campbell's soup and homemade. My son never eats his soup (we have sushi a couple times a month) and he ate it all. Udon was second surprise as it came in a small cauldron. Broth not as flavorful as the miso but really good with a huge amount to share between us. Rolls came and they were great. One of the rolls was the bay scallop ones, tasty! Nice waitstaff, good quick service, cool atmosphere. A perfect end to a day of sightseeing in San Francisco.

Busy Sushi place, for a good reason!

By PhilViking |

They call themselves "New Wave Japanese Cuisine" and have great food and service. The quality and freshness of the sushi, nigiri, and sashimi was high and all was tasty. The unagi don buri was very good. We all enjoyed our meal and hope to return one day soon.

Good Find In Japantown!

By Mike4TraveI |

Good Japanese restaurant found in JapanTown. The food was fresh to boot. I enjoyed my sushi ( tuna, crab, salmon roll). A good food selection from the menu. This is a place where whatever you order will be good.

Very poor sushi and sashimi

By never2late |

Very difficult to understand the good reviews. The only part of the meal that was acceptable was a portion of Uni sushi. The rest suffered from cheap fish served too cold with rice that had been inexpertly cooked. Some of the 'original' sushi recipes were so artificial in taste that they were inedible. Realise this is not a high end japanese restaurant but we couldn't wait to get out.

Fresh, Friendly, and Fabulous

By citygirl4farms |

Kippu is the ticket to fabulous meal while in Japantown. Customers can expect a friendly greeting and swift escort to their table. Miso soup and a small salad are served while the expansive menu is pondered. Sushi items span from the simple California roll, to the playful "Shrek" roll, to the exotic "Ferrari" roll. Vegetarians will delight in the selection of vegetables and tofu. Non-adventurous eaters will be at ease with the familiar tempura and teriyaki options. Every other type of "eater" should just go when they are hungry.

Off the beaten path but a great place to dine in!

By Matt R |

After two long days of walking San Francisco my wife and I decided to dine in instead of eating on the go (run). We walked to Kippu which was just down the street from Hotel Kabuki and it was fantastic! Our server, Joon, was extremely friendly and patient to answer any questions that we had. We both had Kirin, on tap, for $4 which is inexpensive for this area. We ordered the "Shrek" and the "Bubba Gump" rolls and they where both delicious and filling. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area.

Exceptional Food at Reasonable Prices

Killing time around Japantown and feeling a bit peckish... I came across this little gem. Even though the lunch hour was "over", their "specials sign" drew me in. Chicken Bento Box for $6.50... I was pleasantly greeted by the server. The restaurant is small and tidy but immaculate. Only one other diner when I arrived, but i did hear them "oohing and aahhing" over their meal. I was immediately given water and Miso soup, which I love. The server explained the difference between the $6.50 BB special and the regular $8.50 BB, I went with the special and was very pleased. Food was "Hot" and "Plentiful". Great flavors. Salad dressing is the Chef's Secret which I could not get out of my server, but I can say "I wanted the recipe". Shrimp and Fried Potato cooked perfectly, rice dusted with black sesame seeds, and Teriyaki Sauce not to sweet. Just what I needed and just what I wanted and now I must return to try other specials on their menu. Great location for "before a movie @ Kabuki" or "after a movie".

Great food. Great service. Limited seating.

It's a nice restaurant in Japantown. The sushi/sashimi was excellent. The service was great. It's a small restaurant with limited seating.

Fabulous fresh sushi

By Hank F |

I've eaten sushi all over the world, including Japan, and this place rivals the top places. I suggest trying the chef's choice nigiri sampler. The service was impeccable, fast and attentive. The atmosphere is a bit utilitarian and cramped for a US restaurant but the food makes up for it!

Enjoyable lunch

By crcfhrules |

We were looking for a quick place to grab lunch near Hotel Kabuki. This place did not disappoint. Bento box, alaskan roll and dumplings all very good. Very small place that you may walk by - but don't because it was very delicious and the service was great.

Excellent sushi, don't get the ginger cosmo

By Flenser |

Our family had lunch here while shopping in the Japantown mall. The sushi was very delicious. Besides the usual, I had the "fresh catch" special toro. It wasn't quite as amazing as some I've had in Tokyo, but it was very good nonetheless. My wife felt adventurous and tried the ginger cosmopolitan, which she instantly regretted upon tasting it. We set it aside and ordered some hot sake instead, which was much better. I'm not sure whether we were charged for the cosmo. The restaurant itself is a bit cramped, with the chair of the person seated behind me banging into mine. There appeared to be only one server, who did a good job, but was clearly rushing from table to table, which somewhat detracts from enjoying the meal.

Rude waitresses

By Elizaveta V |

We've been with friends, but only one person wanted to eat. They told us to order each, otherwise to go out of the restaurant. Guys were ready to order just drinks to make another person to eat. But in the end we've decided, that this policy is not fare enough. Why we should pay if only one person wants to eat?! We've told this politely to the server and she just told us in rude tone: 'Get out!' We'll never visit this place again and I'll never advise anyone this place!

Very nice sashimi

By dantdavis |

I expected decent Japanese food in Japantown, but also expected it to be generic. Kippu managed to surprise me a bit because their sashimi lunch was really nice and tasty (and yes somewhat generic -but better than I expected.) I picked Kippu because most of the other places emphasized noodles (which I also like) - but this seemed more geared to sushi and sashimi.

One third the cost of Slanted Door

By David M |

Last night I ate at Slanted Door on Ferry Plaza. The bill was three times the cost and certainly no better than here. The food here at Kippu is very good. It’s totally fresh and the quality is right up there. The Bento platters are too much for one person so I suggest sharing with maybe a couple of starters added on as well, but they are delicious.

This was a great restaurant really fantastic food

By travellerm68 |

Staying in Japan town there is a lot of places to choose from but this one is certainly worth a try, we loved it and actually ate here 2 out of our 5 nights because there was so much to choose from on the menu and it was great food. The prices are reasonable too and the service is good and nice and quick, the food is really fresh. I love Agadashi Tofu and this didn't disappoint, the sashimi and rolls are lovely. I can't recommend the soft shell crab so much the batter was a little thick and I have better back in Oz.

Fresh Food, Fast Service

By Screeble |

Great dinner in Japantown at Kippu. Super fast service which was great for our hungry family. Sushi was fresh and delicious--amazing variety.

Simple, inexpensive goodness!

By Brenda S |

Our son took us to this restaurant on a Saturday evening. It's a small quaint place. Not fancy. Not expensive. Food is delicious. My husband and son both had hot pots and I had bento box. Was very good. Lots of food. Authentic no-nonsense Japanese goodness.

Great sushi in Japantown

By Jens L |

Searching for sushi I ended up at Kippu. I was seated directly in front of the sushi chef which is usually the nicest place as you can see him at work and have a chat if you like. My selection was excellent, the staff very friendly. A very nice experience.

Great ramen - and more!

By Stuey G |

Our family visited here as we were staying at Hotel Kabuki. Wanted someone that had good ramen and also tonkatsu plates. We were very pleased with the restaurant. Not the best service ever, but the food was great! Really enjoyed the ramen, tempura and tonkatsu.

This place is delicious. On

By tikitodd408 |

This place is delicious. On a recent trip to SF Japantown, we stopped here for lunch during covid and found the food fresh and delicious and well priced. We had bento boxes. The place had tables set up outside under the Cherry blossom trees and the service was perfect. There’s many choices in Japantown but give this place a try.

Not bad value food ok but service needs improvement

By JRN53 |

So we wanted a Sushi restaurant and looked on line to find one in Japantown a short Uber journey from our hotel. Rang up on the day to make a reservation with no problem but when we arrived they didn’t seem to know we had booked but no matter tables available. Food was nice but not spectacular but the service was not really friendly it was just adequate. If you want decent value Japanese then you couldn’t go far wrong but as my daughter said she’s had better at Waitrose! I wouldn’t put anyone off but don’t go thinking this is 4 stars it’s not.

Really good food, across from Japantown

By Sue H |

We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and the service. We ate here for lunch with people with ages ranging from children to seniors and everyone really enjoyed their meals. Tempura was delightful. Will return as soon as we are in the area.
