Interesting but lacking

By Elen C |

Was a unique concept but lacking in variety. Cheap sushi, fresh but you get what you pay for. Be prepared for a wait, it's a popular place with the local younger crowd. The price allows you to try something you may not be inclined to initially, but there are no descriptions allowing you to make an educated decision. You get no service, when for water refills, unless you hit a button requesting service. You dispose of plates next to your table in a garbage slot of sorts... Felt a little disturbing to have a dirty area right at my table surface. Over all I found enough to eat too be satisfied, however I would not go again if I were back in town.

not worth it

By Caroline F |

It’s fun for the novelty. However, the sushi is pretty bad quality and overpriced for what it is. They are starting to implement these robots that drop off drinks, but it took over 15 to get my drink. I’ve been multiple times and on several occasions the option to pay online wasn’t working, however, trying to get a server to get a paper bill will take over 20 minutes. The servers are more like bussers because your food comes on a conveyer belt. Because of this trying to flag an employee down to ask for help is rather difficult and many employees are rude and unhelpful.

not a clean place

By J E |

We decided to make the trek north to try this place. I doubt we will be back. First, the good. The app is truly the only way to go. Download it and then use it to get on the list. That way you can do anything besides sit there waiting. They have tables or counters. We did first available and the wait was 74 minutes at 7pm on a Friday. The app even sends you a text to let you know when your number is close. Once you are seated they have beer and sake and that is all as far as drinks. Then you start taking plates from the conveyor belt. You wait for what you want and pull it off. If you sit on the right of the place looking towards the kitchen you are at the end of the belt. You can also order from the screen menu and it comes straight to your table. That is the way to go. That is fresher. You can also get hot dishes that way. When you are done with your plates you put them in a slot and the screen counts the plates. It is basically $2.50 per plate. There is also a plate game with the screen. When you get so many plates you get a prize ball. Of course our machine didn't work properly. Thankfully, the person that brought us our bill gave us our prizes. That is a bit fun and I will admit the concept is something to experience once. However, the place is filthy. It is gross. Not clean at all. The difference in the quality of fish from the conveyor belt and ordering it directly was shocking. The staff is overwhelmed and trying to keep up. It took us close a 30 minutes to pay once we checked out on the screen. As the wait is long, the place is extremely popular but the wait is not worth the quality of the food. Also the plates have two pieces of sushi or three pieces of a rolls. For the amount and quality of the fish, you can do better elsewhere. Obviously, I am in the minority for the popularity or I have had better experiences. Sure go to experience it but don't expect the meal of the week. We will not be back.

Fun for the family! Easy serving and super fast

By Selah-in-Texas |

We all enjoyed this place. I'll list out what we liked most about it: - I love that once you get a table you can immediately begin eating. - We have only gone when it is between lunch and dinner time, so we were not there when we had to wait for a table -the food choices on the conveyor are great, but we also ordered noodles and dumplings off of the menu, and everything was delicious and served quickly -we enjoyed ordering online at the table and that food was delivered on a seperate conveyor belt, and it stopped right at our table - we thought the prices were very reasonable for the sushi, and for the amount of fish you got on each piece of sushi this is now one of our family's favorite sushi places! We will be going here often. Hope you find this review helpful!

Super fun to visit

By Nebags |

No one is going to say this is the best sushi in town but it was good. The best part is the vibe. The sushi comes by all the tables via a conveyor belt. It gave us the option of trying things we normally wouldn’t have ordered. Definitely worth checking out.

Fun experience

By LParnell |

This absolutely was a fun place. Lots of different items are on the conveyor belt including desserts. I would recommend ordering the hot dishes rather than getting them off the conveyor belt to ensure it is hot when you get it. Very reasonable priced. The price allows you to try something you may not try otherwise. I liked the spicy salmon on crispy rice.

It is actually spelled KURA not KULA. Unbelievable experience!

A new way to eat. Although we had a 25 minute wait, it was worth it. You sit in a booth and there is a conveyor belt next to you. You start picking whatever plate of sushi you want. If you want a special order, you can do so on the screen above and that will come to you in a second level conveyor belt that stops at your booth. As you finish a plate (usually 1 - 4 sushi pieces per plate), you deposit it into a small door below, and it tally's it. For every 5 plates, you help kill an enemy in the Japanese anime video above. For every 15 plates, you get a small prize that drops down in a plastic egg. When you are done, you press a button and the waiter/waitress brings your bill based on your special orders and number of plates. This was actually cheaper and faster and more fun than going to a regular Japanese restaurant. Great concept. For the 6 of us with 45 plates and 4 special orders, we spent $140 plus tip and we were stuffed.

Sushi on the move-literally

By Xochtil69 |

I liked the option to check in on the monitor and no sign up list or waiting for a hostess to seat me...all automated and quick/prompt text of when to be ready for seating. Of course, it was a bit disappointing that even before coming into the building--there is no banned smoking in front of the door/area; especially since Travis county is a "no smoking within city limits". The choices of sushi (various) and dessert options (at a minimum) are great and the atmosphere where its simple and not fast-paced. Its family friendly and even if you come alone; its fun. If I spoke Japanese or Chinese; I love the options of language choice with English. I did find it hard to understand the employee that came to explain the process to us, yet he patiently repeated whatever we did not catch the first time. The drink orders did take a long while to come and it was good to have the option of ordering special items and watching a video with a fun prize for the kiddo(s) while you're making your selection from the conveyor belt. I would add the option of low-sodium soy sauce at the table, as well. The process of dining is fun and a site to see for first time automation in process of such a simple "dish"... The drinks may have taken awhile to come and the dining went at your own pace, yet the checkout was a bit frazzled; having no direct person and two people coming to take my payment was a bit curious. Look forward to coming again; good sushi without the overpriced ambiance. Yet it would be nice to see no smoking signs in the front of the restaurant area or entrance door.

UNIQUE FOR ME

By calloused_traveler |

My grandson likes to take us to new places that he and his other family members have tried and liked when we visit and he was excited for us to try this place, a fairly new and unique place located in Austin, Texas. It seems to be popular IMO for the way the food is served. The tables are situated on both sides of revolving conveyors that feed back to the kitchen where they are loaded up with every item on the menu. The problem is we were seated at the very end of the conveyor which meant that all the selections were picked over before they got to us. They did have devices at the tables that allowed diners to make selections which were promptly sent to your table on a separate conveyor. It happens very fast and is well organised and if you make a certain number of selections from the conveyor you get a prize, which is also delivered to your table in the same manner. I see why the kids love it. As far as the food goes, Japanese food, so far, is just not my style so even if the conveyor was loaded there were very few dishes that appealed to me. I did try a few of them and one or two were pretty tasty but I think I prefer the kids just go with their father to this place. It was unique, I'll give it that but by the time we got out of there the bill had gone to over a $100.00 for the five of us and not one of us could claim we had a full belly.

Very interesting concept, it was really fun.

By Sergio C |

The option to get your sushi as it passes by on the conveyor belt, is a great idea. The monitor at every table lets you ask for anything on the menu, and then it comes to you on a separate belt. Had lots of fun. Oh yeah the food is great.

Just ok

I was really looking forward to enjoying this place.. Quite a few selections, sushi was ok. The experience was awesome. We definitely want to go back to try more menu options.

Amazing Sushi Place!!

By Jeff Eanes |

My wife and I really like revolving sushi places, but this was next level!! We strongly recommend going just for the experience! Food was excellent and the service was outstanding. Our servers were very supportive and friendly (explaining how the process worked), and were very attentive and quick. Strongly recommend trying out this place!!

Kura Revolving Sushi; More Than Just Sushi

By MoDa0206 |

I love eating here! Kura Revolving Sushi has more than just Sushi. I've lived in japan and (minus the video game like atmosphere) this place hits very close to the mark. The video game I referred to is what customers play as they eat. There is a video game with various levels. Five empty plates equate to one level. empty plates are fed into a slot tableside. the video monitor comes to life showing a segment of anime video. each series of five plates progresses the video. Each five plates awards the table with a pokemon type ball. More than just Sushi; Grilled Salmon, fried karaage chicken, various types of soup, various Tempura & NY Cheesecake. I have no clue why NY Cheesecake is on the menu.

Too cool and really great sushi!

By Stephanie D |

My friend and I had dinner here recently and it was fabulous. Having your food zip to you on a conveyor belt is really cool, and the best part is the sushi is extremely tasty. We ordered several different rolls and some nigiri and we’re not disappointed at all. Two thumbs up!!

So much fun and great prices!

By margaretmQ4410CQ |

I was in Austin for business and met up with my niece and her bf. They had never eaten here before and wanted to try it out. SOOO much food to choose from and it was all fresh and very tasty! We actually ate the 15 plates...plus more! Was actually dreading the price of the bill but when I got it I was amazed at how affordable it was!! Will definitely go back when I'm in town again!

Fun and Resonable Priced

By awan460 |

You have to try this place at least once! It's not the best of Japanese food, but it's VERY reasonably priced for the quality and quantity of food served. 80% of dishes are just $2.25 a plate. 2 pcs of Nigiri sushi per plate. Some comes with just 1 pcs (toro, hand roll, snow crab leg, etc) 4-6 small pcs of rolls (caifornia, maki, etc) Any plate on the revolving belt can be 'ordered' from the panel/menu by your table, and is delivered by a separate belt to your table side. My daughters had such blast watching the delivery the first time we visited. You deposit the empty plate into a slot by your table, and the ordering panel/menu keeps track for you. For every 5 plates inserted, the panel plays a a short 'film'. And for every 15 plates deposited, you get a small souvenir. Besides the usual sushi items, there are chicken nuggets, ramen noodles (4 flavors), Poke, salmon cheeks, miso soup, and various kinds of deserts. My family really like this place. Try it at least once and see how the revolving belts work

Fun way to eat sushi at a great price!

By Paulwang127 |

This is not your typical neighborhood revolving sushi bar. The experience you get here is similar to a cute sushi shop in Japan which is loud and lively. The revolving belt system is not for everyone but the kids will definitely enjoy the fun. For $2.25 you get many choices of rolls, nigiri and sushi. There is no other place in town that serves you the size and quality food for such low price. The food is fresh and you can even order your own sushi or noodles via the touch screen system. Once your order is ready the food will arrive at your table via the revolving belt, pretty neat stuff. This is obviously a hot spot so either arrive early or prepare for a long wait on the weekends.

Fun Sushi Place With Tasty Sushi

By CharlieinTexas |

Enjoyed my first time dining experience. Lots of choices and very cheap/low prices. I thought the sushi tasted as good as pretty much any place in town except for two or three top end places that cost 2-3x more $. I’ll definitely go again. Soon.

Kura Austin

By idalia_cm9 |

This was our first visit to the Austin location. Everything that we tried was great. I think our favorites were the umami oil seared beef and the garlic ponzu albacore. For dessert, I tried the Hokkaido milk creamy tart and the cheesecake (did not get pictures) which were both very tasty! We did not try any of the rolls this time. I highly recommend the restaurant to everyone! If you like sushi, definitely try it out. However, if you are extremely picky and particular you may not like it. Even if you don't like sushi, come and try out their other options like several types of ramen, dumplings, and chicken. The staff was also very helpful in explaining how to take the plates off the conveyor belt. I will say, for cost it is easy to spend a lot of money very quickly, but as long as you keep track of what you order (it shows you on the tablet as well), you should be good. It was an overall very fun experience for all of us.

Kula sushi train

they are quite busy when we were there on the weekend but the wait was not too long after we sat down the foods were fresh, reasonable price, you can pick from the conveyor belt or order fair service

Conveyer Belt Sushi Done Wrong

By sablatt |

The good thing about Kula Sushi is that it's fun to go there. Once. The plates of food keep on coming, and it's amusing to guess what they are. Another source of amusement is the quick little moving dish that brings you any items you order rather than grab off the conveyer belt. Also, you get a tiny prize for every 15 items you order. Each plate you get off the belt is $2.25. You might want to squeal at the thought of a piece of toro nigiri for $2.25, but this isn't the right place for that. The toro, like most of the fish, didn't exactly scream of freshness. In addition, it was missing the unctuous richness of fatty tuna, and it was a tiny piece. Really the best things we had were ordered rather than grabbed. Maybe the noodle dishes, which we didn't try, would have been good. The fish and ingredients had been kept refrigerated until placed on the conveyer belt, but they'd long been sliced and were a little (or a lot) rubbery. They had nigiri with salmon or tuna and a raw quail egg yolk, one of my favorite things. However, the yolk had been out of the shell and separated from its white for long enough that it didn't pop into liquidy goodness. It was kind of like a partly cooked egg yolk. The three of us kept on trying things because we thought surely something would be pretty nice, and we spent $55, which isn't much for sushi. On the other hand, we really stopped eating because we became seriously worried we'd get sick. We didn't, but that's not something I want to worry about after eating in a restaurant.

Good Food Offering

By surfinbird81 |

We visited this place in Kyoto, Japan, while my son was there for an exchange program. It is the same concept and great to see it in Austin. We had tuna and eel sushi, shrimp tempura and a Japanese beef offering which is similar to Korean bulgogi. All were very good and tried the yellowtail cheeks which were great! Finished with desert of vanilla ice cream with red beat paste which came with a big fish shaped donut filled with same paste. Really enjoyed our visit!

Quality seafood & great experience.

By BRC2007 |

I am in and out of Austin all the time. I like the revolving sushi places because they are easy for the solo traveller. Kula definitely has plenty of choices, premium quality, and everything is fresh. The bottom conveyor belt had plenty of sushi, sashimi, rolls, and a level of predictability that meant you could wait for something you missed, but wanted, to come back around. You can order specialty items (along with all plates) from a touch screen and then the item(s) are delivered to you quickly upon the top conveyor belt. I ended up eating more than I should have, but I was hungry and enjoying my experience. There is an interactive anime sequence that occurs based on the number of plates you purchase; I did like that you slide you plates down a chute rather than letting them stack up on the countertop. I will back the next time I am in town.

Variety of delicious sushi at a great price

By Paulwang127 |

This is my second review of Kura and after two years I am happy to report that Austin's only revolving sushi restaurant is still going strong. The place is as crowded as ever during the weekends but the quality and freshness of their food stay consistent overtime. Our favorites such as salmon, torched scallops and seared tuna just melts in your mouth good and hand rolls like spicy salmon, spicy yellow tail and crab are stuffed to the brim and they represents some of the best deals as they are half price compared to most of the sushi places here. As for rolls, you can't go wrong with spicy popcorn shrimp, shrimp taco and crab rolls. If sushi and raw fish is not your thing then there are varieties of fried seafood, rice bowl and ramen to satisfy your cravings. Just remembered that for the price and service there aren't too many place that can compare. The long wait time is the main reason we did not give them 5 stars; however, there is a new app that allows you to reserve a time to eat so I will give this a try next time!

Just like Tokyo

Kura

By dirigibleplum |

After living in Japan we have high standards for sushi and were pleasantly surprised here. Seeing options like tamagoyaki and aburi salmon was just what we were hoping for! The kids loved sliding the plates in the slot to rack up points towards a gachapon. Unfortunately the table and floors were sticky. A little more attention to cleanliness please!

Amazing Experience and Great Food

By Rob P |

Soooo easy as watch the belt line food good by or order off the touch screen menu. We did both. Flawless.

Decent food entertainment

By SoaringEagle78634 |

When placed in perspective this is an decent sushi spot. Great prices if you just want to try the various dishes and see what you actually like. Consider it more like a buffett and the service is as it should be. They run out of specials often

Really fun sushi joint

By Maalawaala |

This was a sushi stop with my cousins we arrived 1 hour before closing, and we were seated promptly. You sit at your table and snatch sushi off of the conveyor belt as you desire. There are rolls, nigiri, deserts and snacks. Places 15 plates down the chute and you get a prize (i.e. Sushi eraser) our waiter neglected us entirely and we never got a water refill but the food gets 5 stars. Seriously a fun experience with friends or a date, worth a try!

Amazing Fantastic Sushi!!!

By Joshua B |

What a fantastic place for Sushi!!! Place wax beautifully decorated and beautifully set up. The Sushi dishes arrive on this beautiful conveyor system! You pick only the dishes you like!!! I wanted to pick all of them!!! They were delicious and beautifully plated!!! The fish slices are very nice size!!! You can also order specials dishes from a menu and in no time the food arrives on a secondary conveyor. A must visit place!!!

Visited this place based on

By Runningnurse71 |

Visited this place based on the good experience of my two kids who dined with our family friends before. I love the automation service and the wait wasn’t long compared to my previous experiences to other sushi restaurants. Plenty of choices of sushi and ramen noodles. My family enjoyed and love the food we ordered. I look forward to comeback here as we only ordered 11 sushi small plates plus 4 different ramen bowls. Highly recomnend this to our friends!

Excellent Sushi, delicious and great new experience!

By Cesar ExtremeGamer |

Amazing experience and really good tasting sushi! I absolutely loved this place, sushi tasted really delicious and there is a ton of variety, they have a great technology / system for taking custom orders and delivers them through a secondary dedicated belt right to you! Service was really fast and even the tablets for taking custom orders are gamified and fun to use. Be ready to eat a lot!!

Fantastic experience! Great Sushi Bar!

By Joshua B |

This is not my first time here!! I came back since my past experience was fantastic! The concept is great!!! Huge selection of food items on the menu. Everything is made so very fresh, that is just perfect and delicious. Service was little slow even so place was not full!! Not even once the server came to check on our water or drink order! The wasabi and ginger are very delicious but it took a long time for it to arrive to the table!!! The food is so good that for sure I will come back.

A fun experience

By Lynnmaui |

We went at the request of our granddaughter to celebrate her middle school graduation.1st time visit for all of us. We had an hour wait. They will text you 30min before your # is called, so we were at least able to go across the street for a drink while waiting. They don't have a bar, but, serve beer and saki as well as tea and soft drinks. We had Japanese beer with our meal, but,the server should have told us it came in large bottles, we would have split it. The novelty of the items passing by on a conveyer belt was entertaining,as was the ability to order things from a touchscreen at the table and have the items delivered on another conveyer belt stopping directly at the table. The food was mediocre. The best items were the spicy tuna rolls and the mango and green tea mochi. It was very noisy and difficult to carry on a conversation. The prices were reasonable.

Employees do not wash hands after visiting the restroom

By jesusers |

I’m sure this was an isolated incident, but the employees’ reactions that we told as we took our names off the list sealed our opinions of this restaurant. Employee came into the restroom, used a stall, left promptly without washing hands as I finished drying my hands. I exited the restroom in time to see them go into the kitchen. We told the hostess and another employee, but they didn’t seem bothered by this or by the fact that we were leaving. It’s unfortunate because the food was great and we had been loyal customers up until today. No excuses for this though, isolated or not.

Good Sushi, Entertaining Dining

By Counterweight |

I recently had lunch here with my daughter, we both enjoy sushi and were excited to try experience the automation aspects of Kura. We arrived around 11:40 a.m., there was already a short wait but we were seated within minutes of arriving. They had a bar option, where you sit facing the automated sushi conveyor, and booth seating, where you face each other while dining. They have popular dishes roll by regularly on the conveyor, but they also have a tablet at each station so you can order items that aren't coming by or that don't come by (like miso soup and some other bulkier dishes). Those items arrive via an express conveyor that automatically stops at your station. When you're done with a dish, they have a dish disposal system that counts the plates you used and bills you accordingly. We didn't really use the wait staff once we got going, but they were friendly, helpful and polite as they got us started. Parking was a little tough to find (they share a lot with other stores as they are located in a strip mall), but we found several spots open behind the restaurant. Prices were reasonable for the portion sizes and the quality. Vegetarian options were rather limited, beyond a veggie roll and an avocado roll, there really wasn't too much if you're not a meat-eater. All in all, we really liked our food, and we had a lot of fun with the automation.
