Awesome

By Steven C |

A block off Broad street in a residential community, the food was awesome in this homey restaurant with about 10 tables you get to after walking past the open kitchen. Walking in, you could see these guys could cook and they were friendly when we asked for ideas. Very friendly service and reasonable prices. Can't wait to go back.

Amazing

Amazing food, great service. Fast seating nice Italian cuisine. This place been a BYOB is the best..

Great Cozy Restaurant.

By GlennBozz |

I have been here dozens of times - mostly for dinner- and have never been disappointed. There are plenty of great BYOBs in Philly and this hidden treasure is one of the best.

What a wonderful eatery in South Philly!!

By Sue P |

This side street gem off of Broad street on Porter was awesome. I was dining alone and needed some great food for dinner as I was flying out of PHL in the early am. I used Yelp to direct me to a BYOB Italian restaurant and I hit gold with this place. I had no reservations and they were able to accommodate me. The service and food were stellar. I will certainly return. Thanks Carlos and friemds for the great recommendations and service!

Great find

By catcher10us |

Went here for dinner on saturday night with family. Knew nothing about the place and it was a great find. Small, cozy with a great staff and the food was terrific. BYOB so we picked up some wine before we got there and we had a great meal. Price was great, service excellent and I would not hesitate to go back or to recommend.

Favorite Italian BYOB in Philly

By Chrissytravis10 |

I discovered this place doing some online research after I moved here. I have brought many a guest here and even had a company holiday party here. The staff is wonderfully accommodating. The dining room is small, so reservations are recommended. Every meal I have had here has been outstanding! Everyone I have dined with here agrees!

Excellent Italian Food

Reservations are required. Excellent food from begining to end. BYOB. The service is superb and very friendly. Prices are average for this part of town.

Many visits and many many returns!

I found out about L'Angolo from my Uncle maybe 5 years ago and we've loved it since our first visit! There's always so many great options and everything is a good choice. My most recent visit, last Sunday, my family shared the grilled calamari and the seasonal butternut squash ravioli to start, both of which were amazing! I had the Sea bass special for my main which was great, and for dessert we always get there amazing chocolate torte and whichever gelato they happen to be serving. I would recommend it all! The service is always very helpful and friendly, the bread is fantastic, and it's the perfect place for a nice night out or for a great dinner before or after a sporting event. I can't wait until my next visit!

Did not disappoint

By PelleasPhiladelphia |

I always wondered whether this small neighborhood South Philly restaurant deserved to ranked so higher on trip advisor. I finally got a chance to go here...and it very much deserves all the accolades. Home cooking feel, not overly sophisticated, but still very well crafted food. The grilled calamari is an excellent app. The ossu Bucco special was rich and meaty. The pasta were all deep in flavor. And surprisingly affordable at $18 an entree avg. great service as well. Super South Philly dining experience.

Sublime

By Leandro M |

My partner and I went to dinner in Philadelphia. We found this restaurant, with a picturesque entrance. In it, we ordered octopus as a starter (it was one of the best I had in a long time). After main, gnocchi and my partner spaghetti (both dishes were sublime). We couldn't leave without dessert, we ordered tiramisu and canolli with coffee to go with it (impressive). All the flavors were a spectacle. SUPER recommend!!! Great dinner, thank you very much

Wow: Hidden Gem

By steventobolsky |

Visitors to Philadelphia, we were taken to this lovely place by local friends. Two shared appetizers were plenty for the four of us, and the specials were fresh and unusual. A bonus for me personally: exquisite espresso! Oops, this is a BYOB restaurant: another bonus!

Fantastic!

By Family_In_Ardmore |

This very "South Philly" experience reminded us of Italy. A modest atmosphere with incredible food. Octopus, calamari, shrimp, spaghetti (gluten-free), and smoked mozzarella salad, to name a few. The chef was very accommodating to our gluten-free needs. We had dinner with friends. We will continue to bring friends here. We came on a weeknight, and fortunately, did not have a problem with parking. BYOB! Mangia!

WOW

By bigpapi2017 |

Real Italian food in a small neighborhood setting, located in the heart of South Philly. The food was outstanding, the service impeccable and the selections of handmade pasta was to die for. Caution, the joint is BYOD, so bring wine. A negative for those of us whole enjoy a good cocktail before dinner, but a positive to price conscious diners. The Italian food is some of the best is Philadelphia very reasonably priced. Don't miss out. A must attraction.

Wonderful L'Angolo!!

By ANGELES435 |

I just love L'Angolo. A little BYOB restaurant in South Philly, their food is delicious. We have been going there for 15 years. We usually order the Fresh mozzarella caprese, tomatoes, roasted peppers, basil oil ($10), the Grilled calamari, herbed olive oil ($12) and the Pan-seared smoked mozzarella, grilled zucchini, roasted peppers, fig balsamic glaze ($12) for starters. For the entrée, we recently had the Gnocchi ai funghi ($17), Parmiginana all’americana (classic chicken parm, served over spaghetti pomodoro... $20) and the fish of the day that is a great dish (market price). I love the fact that it is BYOB. Reservations are strongly suggested because they have only a few tables and it's always full. The servers are super nice. Enjoy!

My go to Italian in Philly

Been here many times and always great food and personal service beyond usual restaurant expectations. Hats off to Phillybob who guided me here for my first visit several years ago.

Delizioso

By joanneq950 |

Delicious! 7:15 reservation for four people yesterday and I am still thinking about my dinner and how delicious it was. This a small byob in South Philly. I hate to say how wonderful the food is because I know it will make it even harder to get in. We started with burrata and farro salad, and a caprese salad; beautiful and delicious. Then we each had a different main dish so that we could taste four different things. The braciola won, but all were hits! Thank you L'angolo for providing delicious food, service and atmosphere!

Love this Restaurant

By Irene A |

Been coming to this restaurant for years. Consistently good food and service. The lobster ravioli (home made) is the best. Its also a BYOB.

Excellent!!!!

Had a great time at this restaurant and loved the salads, calamari, asparagus appetizers and the fish special!!!! I highly recommend!

Hidden Gem

By Richard L |

Wow! What a great surprise find. Our family was staying at a hotel in the Philly Naval Yard area. We wanted a nice place to eat nearby. One of the hotel staff suggested we try this place. First we were glad we had called for reservations and highly suggest making one if you decide to go there. This is definitely a local restaurant. You would not find this just driving around. It is located off the main street in a mostly residential area. Parking real close could be a challenge but we found spaces a short walk away. This is a very small restaurant but we were seated immediately thanks to having made reservations. Every seat was full so they do an excellent job at time management. We had excellent service and the food was outstanding. There were four of us and each placed a different order. Our meal was served quickly and was hot, freshly prepared. After finishing our dinner and desert, which was also outstanding, we were surprised when our waiter brought us flutes with an Italian lemon liquor to finish our meal. I can't say how pleased we were to have discovered this gem of a place to eat. I don't think there would be a bad choice on the menu. We will definitely return on our next visit to Philly. One caution, they do not serve alcohol. This is a bring your own bottle if you want wine with your meal.

Authentic Italian Food, A True Taste of Italy

By LA T |

I just returned home from Italy and when I entered L' Angolo Ristorante I was back in Italy again. This small trattoria has the feel and the look of many of the small restaurants I visited throughout Italy. The waiters speak Italian and English, so I got to practice my Italian! The food here is authentic and exquisitely prepared. I had two appetizers - the Artichokes ala Romano. These were the best artichokes I have ever tasted, including the ones I have had in Italy. They are grilled to perfection and have an excellent flavor that really allows the artichoke to be enjoyed. You MUST have them. I also had the cozze (mussels) in white wine sauce...excellent and fresh! My friend had the artichoke (I convinced him to get it - it was his first and he loved it!), he also had the eggplant appetizer which was also excellent. I had the pappardelle with chingale (wild boar) - this a very difficult dish to find int he US and is all over Rome and Tuscany. It was done to perfection. My friend has the spaghetti with mussels, calamari, shrimp etc in a red sauced. It too was excellent. This place a real gem and the authentic thing if you want true Italian food. I will definitely return with more friends!! Reservations are a MUST - this place does not have many tables.

Food and atmosphere were amazing. Went on a whim and was very surprised! Hidden off the beaten path but easy to find.

Not what it was

By Barbara g |

We were here several times a few years ago. The food is just not what it was. I had the special pasta of the day and the sauce was thick and gluey and pretty tasteless.

Old school is the best school.

Took a recent trip to South Philly to celebrate my brother-in-law's 60th birthday. Party of 6, we all grew up blocks from this authentic south Philly location. On Rosewood street, just a short walk west from Broad Street, we had read the reviews of L'Angolo Restorante and said we're give it a try. There were only two reservation times left for a Sat. night. one was for 5pm; the other was 9:30pm. since we faced a long ride home we took the early one. when we arrived, the place had a few patrons. i was surprised to find that the (open) kitchen was in the front of the refitted south Philly corner row house. we were greeted by our hostess, and promptly seated. the dining area is two small rooms separated by a low divider. I would imagine both rooms would accommodate about a total of 25-30 people. in other words, make a reservation. we squeezed into our table, and tried to keep our voices down, as literally, there are tables right next to you. cozy (?) our waiter was without a doubt the best - friendly, knowledgeable about the menu and the specials, helpful, and fun. we had a great time with him, and the bus person, who also had a great sense of humor though his English was not the best. Definitely, authentically Italian. both were charmers. I think that same sense of authenticity came through in the food. our red, and white mussels were small, but tasty. could have used a little more bread, for dipping, but our waiter quickly caught on and brought some more. i prefer a little more spicy, but all in all quite OK. our mozzarella appetizer with roasted peppers also was quite good. half-way through our appetizers both rooms were full and stayed that way until we left. several of us opted for the Braciola for dinner. rolled with prosciutto and mozzarella cheese, this was a very thinly cut, and tender veal Braciola, with a tomato sauce. excellent! it came over ricotta gnocchi. I must say the gnocchi was the lightest, and best I have ever had. great dish all around. one of us had the gnocchi for her main course and did not leave a drop. she almost fought with the bus person when he tried to take her plate - she wasn't done - just catching her breath. we did not do dessert; we had some coffee and cappucino, and went out in the neighborhood for a while. the bill including gratuity was quite reasonable; the vibe totally Italian, and we all agreed that this place is a keeper. Parking can be hard to fine - no hope at all if you cannot parallel park, and it is a small place. so make your reservation and don't take a big car. you will not be disappointed. BYOB no cork charge.

It's becoming a family tradition...

By Tee610 |

This is the best Italian food that I've found. You walk in through the kitchen and get hit with wonderful garlic/other smells, and are served treat after treat. Portions are generous. No one has ever left hungry! My family has been coming here for several years now. We've never had a bad meal. Yes, it's tight seating, and yes, you almost always should get a reservation, but we've never regretted going, and always compare other Italian restaurants unfavorably to this one.

This is a gem-Ottimo Pasto!

By beagles1013 |

The streets of South Philly are narrow and so is the restaurant. At first, I didn't know what to make of the restaurant as it appeared that I walked in through the kitchen. Once I entered the dining room with my family, we found a charming little gem of a restaurant. There are no more than a dozen tables and the ambiance is wonderful. We started the meal with the grilled calamari. What a treat! You could actually taste the squid and not the breading or the oil. It's not breaded nor is it fried. It comes with a truly outstanding herb and garlic infused oil for added flavor. We also had the mushroom appetizer. What could be bad??? Freshly sauteed mushrooms in olive oil with fresh mozzarella melted over it. The meal...MMMM, MMMM, MMMM, MMMM, MMMM! OK. I admit that I am Italian by appetite. This restaurant just confirms why. The meal was outstanding. My Pappardele was fresh and full of flavor. My son raved about his veal chop. The others had the goat meat filled raviloi. It was excellent and the sauce, even better! We were full so we passed on dessert. Bring a bottle of your favorite wine. It's BYOB. Even parking wasn't bad for south Philly! We were able to park on the same street as the restaurant. It doesn't get any better!

A Philadelphia Gem

By Bahia123 |

Without a doubt, L'Angolo is the best Italian restaurant in Philly; moderate prices, no pretense; friendly, accomodating staff under the direction of Nino; brilliant fish dishes; and exquisite mascarpone cheesecakes by co-owner. We were introduces to really good cuisine whne we lived in New Orleans for 13 years. Now there is a match for excellent food in Philly, and it's called L'Angolo.

A little piece of Italy in South Philly

By bigchet |

Outstanding. Small tightly seated but just like restaurants we eat in on our annual trip to Italy. Food was delicious. Service was great. The aromas of Italian cooking were joyfully overwhelming. The only downside is typical South Philly parking but if you can deal with that, give this place a try. Now one of our favorites

delicious - we were a party of six and everyone enjoyed their dinner - food was seasoned to perfection.

By Arlene S |

We were a party of six - everthing was seasoned to perfection - so tasty - can't wait to go back - its been awhile since we ate there. why did we wait so long? DELICIOUS - small - but who carees!

Unbelievable !!!

By FoodLoverOf-- |

What more can I say! We love this restaurant! Homemade pasta and homemade motzzerella cheese. Unbelievable ! We had a homemade motzzerella caprese salad to start. Just perfect The pasta was sooooo good. I come to naples a lot and this is the best place for homemade pasta that I ever come across. Real Italian cuisine!!

Loved!

By bosdccm |

We went here on a whim from checking out Tripadvisor and so glad we did! Its small and quaint, service was great! Not slow but they take their time. No kid menus but they accomodated with a smile! Def will be going again and again!

Great BYOB ln South Philly

My wife and I had dinner last week at L'Angolo in South Philly. The food and service were outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant for fine Italian food.

Bella

By Jonathon P |

As we walked in the front door of this fairly nondescript restaurant in "real" South Philadelphia we were immediately greeted with a "Buena Sera!" We walked past and through the kitchen to two small rooms in the back. There was room for maybe 40 diners. So, we were squeezed into a "four top" between a table for two and a table seated with 8 diners. The fun never stopped. Our wait staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The service was good throughout our meal. The food was very good - a wild boar ragu over papardelle, pasta agrodolce, and pasta melanzane (eggplant) were all excellent. The salads were very good - one with faro, cherry tomatoes, and (I think) house-made buratta and a roasted beet salad. It's like a lot of the small restaurants in Philly - BYOB. There's no corkage fee and the wait staff were great about being there when we were ready for more wine. THIS is what I think of when I think "Italian restaurant."

Little gem of a place

By Santina S |

We have been to L'Angolo on several occasions and have loved it every time. It is a very intimate and lovely place, the decor reminiscent of small cafes in Italy. The waiters are charming and efficient and the food has been excellent every time - savory Italian comfort food.

Hidden BYO Gem

By Millpers123 |

From the minute we entered this tiny South Philly BYO we were treated like family. The open galley kitchen allows guests to see the talented chefs at work on the way to the small but cozy dining room. We were served by a delightful young man named Ready and he went out of his way to ensure our visit was perfect. We ordered apps: BURRATA ( excellent) eggplant parm (very good) and grilled calamari so tender you didn't even have to chew- they practically melted in your mouth! We ordered the special pork osso bucco over homemade pasta- so delicious! Grilled chicken with mushrooms sounds boring but it was anything but! Desserts of cannoli and cheesecake were also winners. Bill for 3 people with 3 apps, 3 entrees and 2 desserts a very fair $120. Even took home leftovers. Try it out- tasting is believing.

Came here for a graduation dinner with family. This was our 5th time here.

By frank m |

Wonderful food and service, the staff couldn't have been better. Call ahead for large parties, or you won't be able to get in because it's so good and popular. It won't cost an arm or a leg to eat well in Philly, either.

Home Cooking that could be improved.

By CJBruzzo |

This is a very down home Italian restaurant. You walk in to what looks like a pizza shop and through the kitchen and that leads you to the dining room. Very cozy, but also loud. Not easy to have a conversation with your table. This is a BYOB which I appreciate very much. No expensive under poured drinks. So for the food, we ordered the pork chops in a mushroom sauce. Forget what it was, but it wasn't marsella but the sauce was excellent. The pork chop would have also been excellent if not well over cooked. Next time I would specify medium rare. The other dish was the brazial. That was also very over cooked and dry and not a lot of taste. Would not order that again. The sauce and pasta were fine though. Came with broccoli which was cooked well in a garlic sauce. Excellent crusty and great tasting bread. Was a bit disappointed that they didn't have broccoli rabe though. Prices were fine, about $16-$22 per meal. Salads, apps, and soups are extra. Service was fine, nothing to complain about. Overall, would try them again for a second opinion.

It was truly a delightful surprise.

By MartinG145 |

We found L'Angelo through trip adviser. It's less than a mile from the Philadelphia sports complex so it was very convenient after a game. Food was delicious, fresh and presented nicely. Parking is difficult in the area so look for parking on Broad Street. This is a small restaurant with limited seating. If you are a large group I would make a reservation ahead of time. It is quite nice inside and not loud. The wait staff are helpful, upbeat and friendly. it is a BYOB which is also an advantage. There is no liquor store nearby. Dinner for two with appetizers, dessert and coffee was under $60

delicious food

By EricG1954 |

four of us dined on excellent appetizers, mussels, calamari(done perfect), mushroom, and asparagrus rolled in prociuto. Main courses of grilled veal an 3 different pastas were all very good. One person couldn't decide on 1 pasta so they gave her a half of each. Service was very good and the prices were very reasonable. Can't wait to go back.

Lovely little hole in the wall with fabulous food!

By LIVVY_11 |

We just dined at L'Angolo and had a great dining experience! We were fortunate enough to find off street parking right across from the restaurant. Not knowing what to expect, you actually walk through the kitchen area to the quaint dining area. Having reservations we were seated immediately. Servers were very attentive, and our wine was openend immediately as he stated the specials, I chose the Caprese salad, (awesome) and my husband had the Calamari, which he said was the best he has had. I ordered the special, Veal chop with mushrooms and marsala reduction.. melted in my mouth. My husband had the seafood pasta with mussels, calamari, oysters in a spicy red sauce. He devoured it! Would definitely eat there again and only went there based on Tripadvisor reviews! Another great find in South Philly!!

Continues to be the best Italian restaurant in Philadelphia

By Bahia123 |

We have made repeated visits to L'Angolo over the past 6-7 years. Our most recent dinner was in October. We each had the dinner salad with provolone, the salmon with calamari, shrimp and claims, with a light blush sauce...out of the world delicious as done by chef Paulo. Topped off with the pumpkin cheesecake and freshly-brewed, hot decaf coffee. The prices remain reasonable, the service ( led by John) is exemplary and the whole experience remains excellent. Other restaurants are more trendy, but this one is at the top of the Italian summit.

Best Italian food I’ve ever eaten.

By Rose Ann W |

Unbelievably wonderful food. Generous portions, so one appetizer would have been plenty for 3 of us. On a Saturday night they cheerfully saved our table for an extra hour when Lyft had trouble finding our pick-up point. Professional and friendly staff. Tiny place so when one table was noisy, it became very difficult to hear, so will ask for outdoor seating next time. Will plan another trip to from Baltimore so we can introduce friends to such stellar cuisine.

Tremendous Italian Fare

By Lew B |

I don't usually go out to Italian food--I love it but prefer to make it at home. On my visit in June with my girlfriend, we switched things up and decided to venture out of Center City and go to an off-the-beaten-track place. We found L'Angolo, in South Philly, on the Broad St. subway line and were overjoyed. Small, red-white table cloth, flavorful food and a wonderful staff made the experience memorable. L'Angolo does not have a liquor license so you need to bring your own wine/beer. Thing is, we didn't know this and there's not a liquor store nearby. Not to worry: Some prior visitors brought more wine than they needed and left some bottles. The waiter gave us one. How cool is that? Any trip to Philadelphia will mean a return visit to L'Angolo.

Authentic

By Donald S |

Stopped by for a lunch while on business in the region. The entrance is through the kitchen so, we had to make sure we were at the right door. Once in it was a quaint little establishment that had several locals visiting. The food was Authentic, homemade and delicious. Our entire party throughly enjoyed the meal. We will definitely be making subsequent visits when I’m the area.

Great meal

By DW |

You wouldn't guess it by walking up to the restaurant, but this place is a hidden gem in philly. The atmosphere is like your in a small village in Italy, and the food matches that sense as well. Nothing we ate had any heavy butter, rather a to true sense of Italian cooking made with olive oil and spices. I definitely recommend this place.

Italian BYOB-worth a visit!

By bill b |

Wonderful small corner restaurant. Seats 40-45 in two small dining areas. Enter and walk by the open kitchen, great view and only a hint of the goodness to come. Went during weeknite. Great spiced oil with tomato on the table, followed by heated crispy italian bread. Nice menu plus variety of specials. Good sized salad with creative options. Quick service. Both meals came with little delay, again healthy servings with enough for TO GO bag, all tasted great. All staff attentive and responsive.

FAVORITE PLACE IN SOUTH PHILLY

By rjknj |

This is my go-to place whenever I'm in Philadelphia. It's small, intimate and the food is really delicious. The wait staff is friendly, efficient and goes out of their way to make sure you enjoyed your experience. If I have time for only one dinner in Philly, this is it!

Celine dinner

By dshoegirl1 |

Hubby and I arrived so cute and quaint decor made me feel like in Italy. Gave us a choice of tables, which we appreciated, not packed yet. Gave us complimentary wine, which was a fabulous touch. Caesar salad was outstanding, delicious. Hubby and I both enjoyed our meals. Service was great. Would return in the future, we love byobs..

Tiny, pleasant but unpretentious, great food

By longtimefoodie |

Everything from appetizers to dessert (and the complimentary house-made limoncello) is superb and fresh. The service is friendly and efficient. Despite the fact that customers are packed in like sardines, the atmosphere is really pleasant. Somehow, it isn't too noisy. When compared to the really great restaurants, L'Angolo may not deserve a full 5 stars, but it does deserve something above 4. Too often something goes wrong, even if slightly, in any restaurant. That's not likely to be the case here. We've tried many Italian restaurants all over Philly. For the food, nothing is really better and it's reasonably priced. Being a BYOB makes the cost even lower. It's a great value.

Better every single time....How is it possible?!?!

By Cheryl S |

Just when you think the dishes in L'Angolo couldn't get any more delicious.....they somehow make it happen. This place is absolutely amazing. The grilled calamari is the best in the entire world. And I have searched all over Italy for a calamari as good as L'Angolo. It is still the best right here in Philly! The smoked mozz appetizer was the best and so glad we tried it. Entrees for the table included the wild boar ragu. Dont let the name of this dish scare you away! The complex flavors are amazing. Ricotta gnocchi with shrimp.....everyone passed around until it was gone, you just cant get enough. Prime Rib special....no one has ever has a prime rib with the grilled on the outside and melt in your mouth. Yellowfin Tuna special was a must for the seafood lover! MUST TRY!!!!!

Reminds me of Tuscany...

By neecee1113 |

What a great find in South Philly. BYOB and the food is amazing. You can tell each dish has love put into it. My husband and I were brought back to our Italian trip last year when we were greeted in Italian. And then the food ...ahh the food....rustic, homey, fresh, delicious. I had the lamb ragu which was rich and tender. All of the pasta at the table was cooked to perfection. Al dente and just the right amount of bite. It's a small place so make a reservation. The staff were friendly and very accommodating. We will be back.

Fun and Tasty Dinner

By judy U |

The three of us really enjoyed our dinner here. We shared everything we ordered. The special burrata appetizer was delicious and we enjoyed the eggplant parm appetizer as well. Our entrees were the veal milanese, gnocchi and the scallops over home made pasta. All delicious. Great dessert too. It's a very small place with tables very close but I think that makes it more charming. And it's BYOB and who doesn't like that. I would recommend making reservations.

Hit or Miss

By Matthew F |

This used to be a top spot BYO italian in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, it is now run down, and, shockingly, dirty. Our table was beneath a disgusting dirt covered fan which blew debris onto us and our friends. The food was hit or miss. The orchiete with duck was fabulous, but other dishes were average. Perhaps they are devoting all their attention to the new location in rittenhouse area. Much better BYO options are available within a few blocks...try Le Virtu or one of the others on Passayunk.

What a great recommendation!!

By DBERG420Remax |

Tried to eat on the corner of S. Broad & Porter....place was to packed & required reservations, so the waitress walks us outside & points across the street to L'Angolo Ristorante...."Enough Said", she was right on point & the meal, service & atmosphere were incredible. #SoHappy #SouthPhilly #Italiano

Italian Gem

By james h |

I have been here a dozen times in the last couple of years. Mostly with good friends or business associates that I know appreciate good Italian food. I have never been disappointed in all the times I have been coming to this BYOB GEM. Always a great time.

Never go to italian restaurant when traveling, but.....

By Patrizia M |

L'angolo is absolutely delicious, fresh and original products, like/better then in Italy!! I was invited by local friends, so I went, very curious to understand if their comments were right... I tried several dishes (calamari, carciofi, pasta marinara...) and my colleagues different one, but everything was 'real italian' with italian flavour (nothing more then what is expected to be in the original recipe). I will go back anytime I can! :-)

Real Italian restaurant

By Dan P |

We were visiting clients in the navy shipyard and had a window during lunch without meetings. There is very little eating options in the shipyard, so we used TA to find a local restaurant close by. This restaurant had strong reviews so we decided to try it. Parking was a challenge on very narrow streets but eventually found a legal parking spot on the street a few blocks away. It's not a large place but had a very Italian atmosphere with half the patrons speaking Italian. We started with the calamari which was not fried as usual but cooked without the fried coating. I love calamari prepared this way and it was delicious, one of the best I've had. I opted for the Cesar's salad with shrimp which was very good. My colleague had a pasta dish and he raved about it. I recommend L'Angolo but allow extra time for parking.

Consistently Excellent Food

By ReRe |

L'angolo is one of my favorite restaurants. It is small and cozy, and the staff are always warm and accommodating. The owners, Davide and Kathryn, have created a top-notch restaurant in South Philly. The food never fails to disappoint, and the prices are reasonable. I look forward to the fall when the homemade butternut squash raviolis are available. They are my favorite. Although I am not a cheesecake lover, I am addicted to Kathryn's cheesecake, which is made with mascarpone cheese. You must leave room after dinner to savor this delicious dessert. Make sure you have a reservation, as the restaurant is usually busy. Don't miss dining at this wonderful Italian restaurant.

Small and Intimate with Fantastic Food

By SB4SD |

My husband and I took were visiting my daughter who goes to school in Philadelphia. We took her and 3 of her friends to L'Angolo. My husband found it on Yelp. It was wonderful. All of us loved it. It is small and hard to get a reservation for (we went at 5pm on a Sat. night since that was our only option) but definitely worth it. The food was amazing and the service was wonderful.

I'm Italian. I'm originally from South Philly. This pasta is the best I've had in a long time!

By Koho26 |

We've been to Scannicchio's many times and had never even noticed this place which is almost right across the street. Only tried here based on Tripadvisor reviews. Exceptional food and great service. Small, BYOB and reasonably priced with a creative menu and truly outstanding pasta. My wife pasta - the red sauce was perfect - light with just a slight amount of spice. I has stripped bass whcih was outstanding with an asparagus appetizer wrapped in prosciutto - done perfectly.

Delicious, authentic Italian food with reasonable prices

By BKS8843 |

Based on the looks from the outside, this restaurant would not have been my first choice. However, it was recommended to us by a friend so we tried it. Don't let the looks deceive you... This place was great! The inside is cozy but charming and the food was delicious and priced well for the quality. If you're getting dessert, you have to try the flourless chocolate torte; it was fantastic!

delicioso eats

Went Valentine's weekend with 2 other couples. It was wonderful. Calamari salad was tasty, Not that fried from the bag stuff. Sauted with just the right amount of seasonings .Most of us had one the the fish specials,. Swordfish or bronzino. These were nice sized portions not the petite ones like at those fancy smancy restaurants.Price were not crazy. Only thing was parking was a little difficult. Still I would drive around anytime to have a meal at this gem.

We visited L'Angolo at the suggestion of friends whose tase we value and were therefore disappointed when our meal didn't live up to expectations. Our appetizers were fine; asparagus wrapped woth shrimp and grilled calamari. The latter was very good, with a delicious olive oil dip that was very special. We both had pasta dishes; pappardella with a light sauce of raisins and onions. The onions weren't mentuioned in the description of the dish. The other dish was orichietti with a duck ragout. It was overly salty. Both pastas were undercooked. The prices were very reasonable, the ambience fine and not overly loud and the wait staff was courteous and efficient. All in all, there are too many good Italian restaurants in Philadelphia to warrant another visit here.

Fabulous Italian Food

By Sam44586 |

I usually don't like italian restaurants because they rarely have exceptional dishes, but this place was an exception. We were there for a company dinner, and all of the courses were delicious (and from what I could tell, the most authentic Italian place I've come across in the states). The eggplant parmesan appetizer was fantastic, and my penne milanese was mouthwatering. Portion sizes were perfect, and the prices were fairly reasonable (~15-20 a dish). The service was great, too. Only downsides are that it's a small place so it became loud and the parking as mentioned in a previous post is pretty much non-existent. I recommend it! (and bring a good bottle of wine)

The food at L'Angolo is delicious every time we go. Great menu selections, but not too many. What that team does, they do very well. Great staff, friendly atmosphere, BYOB.

Surprise hit

Man, the calamari was amazing, and the tiramisu cannot be beat! Burrato mozzarella was fantastic. We will be regulars here.

excellent- July 27, 2012

Friends suggested that we take my visiting sister and husband here for an authentic Italian meal and that is exactly what we got!! We had meals with Pasta, Veal and Fish and all of them were fantastic. **special note, the staff was absolutely amazing!! My sister ordered Calamari appetizer and it was grilled - not fried. She said it was very good, but left some of it on her dish. At the end of the night when the bill came (without us saying anything), the waiter advised that he had taken it off the bill, as it appeared that she did not enjoy it!!! What??? We were so impressed with this, I am definitely going back and I am definitely referring my friends to eat there!! Great night out. Lorraine, Ambler, PA

Excellent Italian Restaurant in South Philly

By mjlynch |

True italian food at its finest. I had the gnocchis in some kind of cream sauce and it was fantastic. Sampled my finances lobster raviol and they were great as well.

Great place - vibrant, friendly and great food too!

By CathyDArizona |

Went with friends for dinner and loved this gem of a restaurant. It is a BYOB which helps to keep your cost down. My husband and I shared the fish speciality of day. It was delicious and plentiful. We also shared the beet salad - It was amazing. Our friend had the Chicken Parmesian which was a very generous portion and he said was delicious. His wife had the pasta special and that too was a generous portion and she said it had great flavor. They even were able to order plain spaghetti with butter for their daughter with some shrimp on the side. Loved the atmosphere -

Fantastico!

By Andy S |

I have been to L'Angolo twice, and have loved it each time. It is a tiny, authentic Italian restaurant with spectacular food and service. Don't forget to bring a few bottles of wine; they are BYOB. L'Angolo is one of those neighborhood Italian places you always hope to come across when traveling to a new city.

South Philly at its best

By luvtheDAKs |

This place was great. It starts when you walk in the door. You are greeted in a very friendly Italian way, you practically walk through the kitchen to get to the very small dining area and quaint tables. It looks warn and very used...but that is part of the charm. The wait staff appears to also be the owners, which is a good thing. Now for the food. The appetizers where very good and the main course was very tasty and clearly made from scratch. The highlight of the evening was the bolognese. We order a large bowl for the table and proceeded to devour every last morsel. The taste was fabulous. So, to wrap up, it is a bit of a hole in the wall that is well worn. The character is 100% south Philly and the food is fantastic.

Awesome experience! Always try their specials and you will be delighted. We have been to hundreds of restaurants in Italy and this ranks as one of the best. Can’t wait to return.

i ate there once a few years ago. not impressed they had the nerve to serve me canned red bell peppers.---this is as far from authentic as you can get!

Love it, Love it, Love it!

By DCTravelGirl06 |

Fantastic, authentic Italian food. I try to make this a stop on my trips back to my hometown. The only way I am ever disppointed in this place is when they are booked & I can't get a reservation. Due to the small size, this happens not infrequently, but the small size only adds to the charm.

Wonderful authentic meal!

By americangirl777 |

Our family realy enjoyed our meal. Chicken parm was done perfectly. The ravioli was amazing and so was the bread and ceaser salad. It appeared that everything was made in house. The staff is very warm and friendly.

Still one of the best in Philadelphia

By Carmine0814 |

After my travels to Italy, I am always let down when eating Italian in this country. Most likely you'll be eating American Italian food which is a far cry from authentic Italian. L'Angolo is about the most authentic that you are going to get. Dishes from the Apulia region are prepared fresh daily with very nice specials as well. Most dishes are prepared on the grill, the kitchen is right in the open. Paolo, the chef does an excellent job. Davide, the owner is a charm. A big plus is that it is a BYOB, which is great. You are not getting ripped off for overpriced bottles. Kind of sad that Nino is not there any longer, he added so much character to L'Angolo. Doesn't feel the same without him. Still, an excellent little spot.

Wonderful, intimate Italian restaurant!!

By stamfordnortheastgal |

As we had been in Philly a few years back, and we had enjoyed this restaurant, we wanted to return. The problem is, we did not make reservations in advance of arriving in Philly! But...when my husband called in the afternoon, they were booked, but said they could fit us in right by the kitchen! Ok, so no problem. We had learned that this restaurant is BYOB....so that was great! Since I didn't know if there would be a wine store close to our hotel, I brought a bottle from home on the train. (worked out really well!) Great service again! We started with the special artichoke, and their caprese. Excellent! All so fresh! My husband ordered the pork milanese...(only ok) and I asked about the ravioli. Since they had a special that night, I couldn't decide what type of ravioli to order, so I asked the waiter. He kindly said that he could give me some of each! WOW!! How accomodating and wonderful to suggest!! Now the table was right as you entered the restaurant, squeezed in right by the kitchen. So...not much ambiance, but it was fun to see the goings-on in the kitchen!! They had a nice fan to turn and blow on us...and it was very pleasant! so be sure to have a reservation!!! and remember to BYOB!! Very inexpensive for such a wonderful meal!! Thank you for fitting us into your evening! If you're in South Philly....be sure to visit!! A place just like Italy!!! How I miss Italy...!!

Excellent Business Dinner

By Dimitry E |

I was invited to join business colleagues for dinner at this restaurant. It is a small place but comfortably laid out, so you do not feel like you are rubbing elbows with guests at other tables. We started with several appetizers which were excellent, burrata was amazing and calamari was grilled to perfection. The pasta for the table was also outstanding with their house red sauce having a little 'kick' to it. My only slight disappointment was grilled branzino, which was slightly overdone. All and all, I highly recommend this place for an authentic Italian meal

The Welge Report

By sitesandbites |

On a strong recommendation from one of our cousins we made a reservation to try out this recent addition to the restaurant scene in Havertown. We arrived a bit early, as usual, and scored what we thought was the best deuce in the house. Our starter was the calamari which was perfectly done. This was followed by a pasta dish staring mushrooms and grilled shrimp for Dee. I had the duck ragu and pasta. Both entrees were very good and I'm sure we will be back.

Never disappointed

By Charles I |

We go there several times a year since we live within a short distance from the restaurant. The gentlemen that wait the tables are local guys & are great at their jobs. The restaurant is a converted row home so it gets a little loud but when you are raised in a row home you are quite used to it. The food never disappoints.

Dinner

Unique Restaurant, the dining room reminded me of Italy, I ordered spaghetti with mussels, calamari and shrimp and it was very good, my husband ordered beef braciole, which he liked, the service was good, and the price was good would definitely come back...

excellent italian food

By lineman10 |

Fathers day with two adult daughters(foodies)and two grandchildren.Reservations definetly required.Small but comfy room with excellent servers. The Food I had the beef braciola which was out of this world delicious.Pulled steak meat wrapped with Italian ham and covered with mozzarella in a blush sauce. My one daughter had the cheese gnocchi and shrimp in a cream sauce which she said was delightful, the other daughter had the chicken milanees which she described as well prepared and delicious. Desert was the cannoli and caramel expresso gillati.Bread and salads were excellent.BYOB.All food and deserts were generous portions, will definetly be back. Please excuse any misspelt words tD

Disappointed, once great this time mediocre

By shorevet |

Ate here about 2 months ago and was blown away with the care with which the food was prepared. The wait staff both visits were charming and attentive. The food this visit on the 17th was heavy handed. The pappardelle was overcooked and swimming in oil, however the shrimp were cooked to perfection. The special of Branzino was prepared well but once again the overage of octopus, shrimp and potatoes were swimming in oil. I made note of the cook staff the first time I was there, this team was not them. It is hard to believe that a restaurant would put a cook into rotation on a Friday nite and not a chef. I really talked L'angolo up my first visit, I will wait and see what happens on a next visit. Consistency is the gold standard that separates average from the great. For such a small restaurant the demand for consistency must be very difficult. I think I will call ahead to see who is in the kitchen before my next visit.

Great evening, attentive service, delicious food! And a BYOB!

By worldexplorer0820 |

My husband and I had never been to this area of South Philadelphia before, and went on the recommendation of some dear friends. They were spot on! The place is tiny --- but it feels intimate, rather than cramped. Service was friendly, professional and helpful; our waiter, Vince, could not have done more for us. My appetizer was the grilled calamari -- delicious -- while my husband opted for the Caesar salad, which he thoroughly enjoyed. For entrees, he chose the lobster ravioli while I chose one of the specials, a veal ravioli in a truffle cream sauces. The flavors were wonderful, and serving sizes were just right. The tiramisu was perfection. I would heartily recommend this restaurant. You may want to arrive early (10-15 mins); parking, depending on the night, can be a bit tricky. Also, some of the neighborhood streets allow parking on one side and they are so narrow that trying to navigate along them can be a bit of an adventure! However --- it is well worth it. Our hope is that you enjoy this place as much as we did!

Delicious bit of Italy

By lilnonna |

This intimate little gem is my favorite Italian restaurant in south Philly. They fill up quickly so you do need reservations. The wait staff were attentive and the service is quick, even though they were crowded. We had two specials, one with shrimp and homemade pasta and the other grilled mixed seafood. I have to say it was perfect. Perfectly seasoned and the fish cooked perfectly. The grilled calamari was the highlight of th meal. I will definitely return. Magnificent! There are about 3 steps to enter, for those who might have trouble with steps.

Always good, Always consistent

By SteveMurt |

My wife and I have been eating at L'Angolo for years and have never had a bad meal or experience. We like the family feel eating there. You go knowing this isn't a romatic place to have dinner, it is a place for good food. We like ending every meal with Lemoncello too. We will return.

Consistantly Great

By Robertp593 |

This is our family's favorite place in Philadelphia. Both my children request we go whenever they return home for a visit. This last time was for my daughter's 24th birthday. She had the gnocchi with shrimp in a white sauce. It is terrific. It is made with cheese and not potato so it is like marshmellow puffs. Rich and creamy. I had a special, the veal ravioli in a cream sauce. It was great. First I had the grilled artichoke special which I get whenever they have it. It is in a garlicy broth and very good. My wife and daughter split the special salad with a creamy cheese which melts to become the dressing. Both loved it. The mixed grill, seafood was my wife's choice. It had fish, shrimp, octopus, mussels and more. The deserts are limited but the fig gelato can't be beat. The prices are very reasonable, with most entrees under $20. Add to that the fact that it is BYOB and the meal for 3 was less than $100. We have been here about 4-5 times in the last year and will continue to come back.

Hidden treasure

By linniewren |

What a great little spot. If you've never been to Italy, have a meal here and you've been there. Very authentic. Items on the menu I've not seen elsewhere or at least not to that quality. A "can't miss spot". Tiny... Prep in the front of the house but don't be fooled. Not much atomosphere but you won't even notice.

Moto bene

By msinfobcn |

A bit off the beaten track but well worth it. This little (and I mean little) gem of a restaurant was wonderful. It is a BYO so get your wine before you go (beware of Pennsylvania's stupid liquor laws- you have to go to a state run liquor store to buy wine) - To get there you need to take about a $10.00 cab ride. We started with appetizers- I had the Caprese Salad- and the mozzarella was divine, my dining companion had the Bracciole ( a softer mozzarella cheese atop greens and topped with a devine balsamic ) - For second course, I had chicken (watching my weight-no pasta for me)but my companions had ravioli, veal, and a seafood pasta to die for. This restaurant is tiny- only about 8 tables and you go through the kiutchebn first- I just loved it and will definitely return on my next visit to Philadelphia

Great Italian ...and convenient to the subway

By gonepackin |

While visiting from out-of-town we asked our nephew if he had any suggestions for REAL ITALIAN FOOD. Bingo! Its a small dining establishment in a heavily Italian neighborhood. Thats a clientele with olive oil in their genetics so you better serve great food. We had a marvelous meal. The subway is about 5 blocks away so it was an easy walk. Philly liquor licenses are a hassle and this is not a high-volume operation so bring your own wine, they expect you to!

Fabulous Neighborhood South Philly Italian Restaurant

By David R |

My daughter and I were able to get a 5:15 reservation at the last minute on a Sat evening Dec 22 a couple hours before we had to pick my brother up at the airport. Very convenient being only 10 min away from PHL. Outstanding food and service!! She had Caesar and Spaghetti Scoglio and loved both. I had special scallop appetizer and special sea mass over mashed potatoes entree - both excellent. Service was impeccable and they made sure you were happy, water glass was filled. And, it was not very expensive - exceptional value......Seating is tight but did not bother us at all as we were well separated from other tables. BYOB.

Fantastic Cuisine

By marsalv |

My husband and I stopped at L'Angolo's before attending a concert at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden. To start we had one of the most delicious breads with a dipping oil I have ever tasted. The bread was crusty on the outside and soft, mouth melting on the inside. I was hooked. For an appetizer we had the grilled calamari- wow, fresh, flavorful, not breaded and not chewy but tender. I had the cavetelli with pesto and ricotta- it was excellent. My husband had a special- homemade papperadelle with broccoli rabe, shrimp in a chili sauce. It was out of this world. What a fantastic gem of South Philly- can't wait to go back.

Excellent Authentic ItalianFood

By Sharan |

This is one of the best and most authentic Italian Restaurants not only in Philly but I think in America. The owner, Davide, and his wife are wonderful, and Davide, who is Italian, does a superb job with his menu. My husband and I have tried many of their dishes and have never been disappointed. The flavors are simple, true to Italian cuisine, and the food itself is excellent. Some of my favorites are their soups, salads, pastas and deserts. My husband enjoys the seafood pasta, veal Milanese, shrimp and prosciutto, and the "Giustino" salad, which is not on the menu, but consists of roasted beets, arugula, mozzarella, burrata, goat cheese, and roasted peppers. Very nice ambiance, reminding me of a traditional Italian restaurant with great service. Truly a must go to if you want home style Italian.

Absolutely Amazing

By Alexandra L |

We went for a nice Saturday night family dinner and it was perfect! There were so many unique and delicious, homemade, Italian dishes to choose from. We thoroughly enjoyed the environment and the people were incredibly polite and nice!

Always so pleased when we visit...

By charlesdN8018SD |

It's a favorite that we don't get to visit as much as we would like - but we are treated like regulars every time we visit. The service from John and the entire staff is so welcoming. The food is amazing - portion size just right, flavors complex and delicious. Creativity even with the standards is excellent - and being Italian, it's hard to please us with any style of Italian cooking! Being a BYOB is a plus - and to make is a very special evening, the complimentary Lemon-cello makes everything just relaxing and perfect. Don't miss this experience - casual but elegant - you will think about the food for days and tell everyone you meet! Grazie!

Disapointed This Time

By Suturedoc |

After many wonderful dinners here, we went recently with another couple (first timers) and were over-all disappointed with our meals. Our appetizers, Caesar salad and mussels were excellent. Two veal dishes were described as tough and tasteless. A breaded pork medallion meal was described as fair. A seared tuna dinner looked horrible as presented (everything piled on the plate}, but the actual food was very good. The service as usual was pleasant and excellent. Because of our previous satisfaction with the food we will probably give it another try,

Best Kept Secret In Philly

Like being in Italy! Pasta to die for!! Love it for a quick lunch or quiet dinner. Staff is from Italy and willing to please whatever you would like that is not on the menu. It's a hidden gem on a tiny corner, as it's name states.

L'angolo West which is located in have frown pa

Saturday We went to their second location that opened on Friday, June 10th. It was awesome. my hubby is still talking about last nights dinner at breakfast this morning. appetizer - Pan-seared smoked mozzarella, grilled zucchini, roasted peppers, fig balsamic glaze. His entree- Milanese di vitello... thinly pounded crispy veal, arugula, marinated onions, shaved grana. My appetizer was - Beet salad, orange vinaigrette, hazelnuts, goat cheese.. I ordered the special, a shank of pork with pasta !!! The pork melted in my mouth We were so happy they opened a second restaurant closer to us in Delaware County.

Great dinner

By Firstlade |

I found this place from Yelp! Definitely lived up to its rating. We were a party of 6. Every dish ordered was delicious. We had veal Milanese, gnocchi w pesto, pasta w broccoli rabe, seared scallops as appet., pasta w lamb meat, melted mozzarella cheese appet and a few desserts. Best dessert was key lime cheese cake. Don't forget to BYOB. We waited about 15 minutes past our reservations but well worth it. The waiter was extremely attentive and great service. Highly recommend!!!

Amazing! Just like Fiumicino Italy!

By Cheryl S |

This meal brought back so many amazing memories of the food from Italy. We started with the grilled calimari. One bite and I was back in Fiumicino! Since the grilled calamari was so amazing, I went with the special grilled Chilean Sea Bass for my entree which was also amazing. If you are looking to relive the food from an amazing Italian vacation, or if you just want to experience authentic Italian food, this is the place you should try! I will be going back for sure! The service was great and the place was so quaint and cozy. My new favorite place.

Extremely simply decor, unpresuming locality, really great food, well cooked, well presented. Bring your own wine and they'll open it for you. Relatively costly but worth the price. I expect to return!

Wonderful place before/after games

By willgal |

My wife and I attended the Temple-Penn State football game and had tickets for the Phillies later the same day so we were looking for a break from stadium food and tailgating. I saw the reviews for L'Angolo here and on other sites and decided to try it. The Phils' game began at 7 pm, and the football game was over at 3:30 so the 25 minute walk to the restaurant seemed to be doable except for the fact that they don't open for dinner until 5 pm. When I called for reservations, I asked if we could get in earlier and was asked when we wanted to eat. They told me 4:30 wouldn't be a problem. Very accommodating. The walk through South Philly was fun, past all the row homes and people hanging out on their stoops. We took some good natured ribbing from Temple fans along the way when they saw my Penn State hat, but everyone was friendly and greeted us as we walked by. The restaurant, as others have noted, is very small, and you go through the kitchen area in this converted row home. We brought a bottle of wine, and it was immediately opened and poured as we were seated. There were several specials, both appetizers and entrees, and we had two of them. In short, we were impressed by the food and the service. The menu is limited (a good sign to us), and we were served promptly so we could get on to the game. Actually, most of the people in the restaurant (which was filled by the time we left) were either coming from the football game or going to the Phillies. We talked and exchanged sports comments with several other patrons, and we felt right at home. The couple next to us apparently comes here on a regular basis before baseball games, and when I told him I was from out of town, he asked how I ever found out about L'Angolo. He seemed to want to guard it as a secret. Altogether, we had an excellent meal (my asparagus wrapped in prosciutto with a balsamic drizzle was outstanding; crunchy and flavorful). Plus the Phils locked up the division championship after PSU won. Good day.

L'Angolo in Havertown

By readytogoanytime |

What a delight having L'Angolo open a restaurant in Havertown! Make a reservation as it is always busy. Every dish on the menu is a must try. Best BYOB in the area. And, very reasonably priced.

Don't go, every dish is overseasoned

By Travel_velocity |

First the good...they are friendly. Now for the not so good...the food is way overseasoned. You can not tasted the food and they do not know how to cook here. You can judge an italian restaurant by its bolognese sauce and here it is terrible. I ordered the special, a $26 lamb chop, a beautiful tomahawk but it was ruined...by overseasoning. To be honest, I did not want to eat it but I scraped off the two inches of stuff on it and ate simply because I was hungry. The appetizers were overseasoned too -- every dish. Seems like they just pile on the seasoning here to make up for any skill they lack. The place is tiny...if you are one of the three people who are seated in a place next to the aisel, and you will know if you visit because if you are not you will count yourself lucky, you will go crazy from all the bumping going on every time a waiter comes by. Oh, and it' BYOB because I guess they don't have a liquor license here. No wine list here. Our recommendation: there are much better places to visit. don't believe the other reviews where they say it's "real italian" here...they have not been to Italy. Stay away would be our recommendation. Sorry I can't give a positive review.

Outstanding!!

By Dodiefae |

First time back here since Covid. I don’t think the prices have increased at all and the portions are more generous than I recalled. But, most importantly, the food is superb! I was so happy to have leftovers to eat the following day!! I had the mushrooms as an appetizer- it was very generous sized and meaty! I had a pasta special with shrimp and crab- very yummy! My husband enjoyed the duck orichette (sp?)

Best Italian Restaurant this side of the Atlantic!

By NVP102 |

Looking for a delicious Italian meal with great service in Philly. Look no further than L'Angolo. Just one warning - if you are planning to dine on a weekend evening call ahead for reservations. The restaurant is small, but that is part of its charm. My husband and I have been celebrating special occasions (and not so special occasions) here for years. It has become a favorite of our teenage boys as well. When you walk into the restaurant you pass right by the open kitchen which fills the air with amazing aromas of an Italian kitchen. The menu is small but you are sure to find something that you will enjoy - and there are always several specials to choose from as well. Among our favorites: ricotta gnocchi with Asiago cheese sauce - packed with flavor, but light; penne melanzane - an eggplant and tomato sauce that is sweet and satisfying; homemade lobster ravioli filled to the brim with ricotta cheese and lobster; fettucini di mare with perfectly cooked shrimp and mussels. Save room for dessert and coffee! Located in the heart of South Philadelphia, your meal here will be authentic Italian food that will fill your belly and your soul with the best this area has to offer. It is a BYOB. Your visit to Philly won't be complete without a meal at L'Angolo.

Good BYOB in South Philly.

Very tight seating and waiting area. Service is fine but the food makes up for everything.

If I can't go to Italy....

By barbandsteve |

Then let me have dinner at L'Angolo. This is by far my favorite restaurant in Philadelphia. The food is always excellent, but the best part of the meal is the people. The last time we went to L'Angolo, it was a Wednesday night and, because of weather and other conditions, many people had cancelled their reservations. We had the place to ourselves! We shared a bottle of wine with Nino (manager) and had one of the best nights ever! I almost hate to tell too many people about this restaurant as it will just make it harder to get reservations! It is small, intimate and delicious! The first time we went, there was a dish, Shrimp Trentino, on the menu. When we returned, it was no longer on the menu. I asked, and ask almost every time I am there, and they always happily make it for me. What a treat!!!

Hidden Gem in South Philly

By audittflyer |

L'Angolo is a great traditional Italian restaurant in South Philly - food is prepared fresh, generous portions, great wait staff, and the intimacy you can't find in a typical restaurant. There are a number of great Italian restaurants in South Philly and L'Angolos is one of the best. Highly recommended - you'll be looking to the return trip.

Food just gets better and better

By Ron J |

If you don’t know where it is you may have a challenge finding the place but it is so worth the effort. It’s small, kind of hidden in a local neighborhood. The food, Italian, is fresh and always outstanding. Service is warm and efficient. Parking is non-existent. UBER Reservations are a must. This is a secret hidden Philly Gem.

Tiny but worth it

By SteveLisaS |

My wife and I first found out about this L'Angolo last year. We were so impressed by the food and service we returned this year with our two young children when we visited Philadelphia again. And once again, the food and service were outstanding. We've been to better-known Italian restaurants in the city, but have always returned to L'Angolo and consider it our favorite restaurant in Philadelphia, period. Our younger daughter loved the walk through the kitchen to get to the dining area in the rear. Reservations are a must, and remember to bring your own bottle of wine (which they will happily open with no corkage fee)!

Great family meal

By rayzel |

We enjoyed the original dishes which were not the usual veal and chicken varieties. I enjoyed a shrimp dish which had loads of large shrimp and was too much for one meal. My husband had chicken and they adjusted the dish to suit what he can eat. The same was true for my daughter-in-law who is a vegetarian. this is a tiny place, so make a reservation!

Amazing "Hole-in-the-Wall" Italian

By Richard S |

L'Angolo is a restaurant I can't get enough of. Wish I had multiple stomachs to sample more dishes than I have. Their seafood is outstanding as are all their homemade pasta dishes. The salads are to die for. Add to all this excellent and extremely friendly service and you have a real winner. It's my favorite Philly go-back-to!!

Close to Rome

By tara172802 |

L'Angolo's is about as close to an authentic trattoria as you're going to get! The food is simple and amazing! The atmosphere will take you right back to Italy! The service is outstanding! It is a small place, so make a reservation, and bring your own bottle of wine! A nice Frascati, for your seafood dishes, and maybe a nice Brunello Moltacino, for your red meats. And don't expect to find parking! Take an Uber, that way you can finish all of the wine that you brought with you! 😊

A Surpise in South Phillie

By Love2Leave |

I actual live 2 blocks from L’Angolos and always see a crowd going in. But it looks like little more than a joint. Back room is cozy but very decent. Food is delicious and holds up against other South Philadelphia favorites. Try the braciole or gnocchi.

Amazing Authentic Italian Cuisine

By shellyz |

What an incredible dining experience from start to finish. The smoked mozzarella appetizer was delicious. We can’t rave enough about the chicken parmigiana and the gnocchi with shrimp. The chef is very accommodating and was will to change sauces. The chocolate mousse cake was mouth watering. Service was exceptional! Loved the Italian music playing and flare of Italy ambience. This is our new favorite place!

Not Haute But Terrific

By jagman8f |

Party of four persnickity old coots who, from start to finish, loved the place. The place is very small but the tables were well arranged so you did not feel that you were sitting in another party's lap. Noise level was such that we could carry on a conversation without shouting. Service was top notch from beginning to end. Early on, one of our party knocked over a glass and bottle of red wine but the mess was removed quickly and efficiently. The bread was warm, crusty, and had flavor. An eggplant appetizer was more than shareable as was a first of grilled squid which did not resemble rubber brands. Caprese salad was tasty. Darned if I remember what my dinner mates chose as mains but my papardelle with a duck ragu was both unusual, delicious, and huge (dinner tonight at home). Prices are quite modest with most entrees hovering in the high teens to low twenties. Veal chop special was quoted at $35. when asked which is why I never order a special at an Italian restaurant without a price check. An altogether positive experience; I will certainly visit again. P.S. BYOB.

Roma!

By Annette S |

Best Philly Italian in my book! Nino is a wonderful chef who does all the Roman classics! BYO and reasonably priced for groups -- call in advance! Caveat: forget about the parking! Park in center city and take a cab or the train.

This place is special – don’t miss it

By reisenbe |

This is what can best be described as a “hole in the wall” Italian restaurant. I requested something like this from our local host and was not disappointed. The appetizers or salads could’ve been entrées and any other restaurant. My Caesar salad could have fed four. I ordered the pasta with seafood. I really have to describe it in order to do it justice. There were at least two dozen mussels, four clams, four large shrimp, and a pile of calamari. I have never seen anything like this served in a restaurant. This is a BYOB restaurant so we brought our own wine. We did not feel rushed, spending almost 3 hours there. It is in South Philly, worth the cab ride.

Like eating at your next door neighbors.

By Oakleyhead |

Eating here is like eating at your neighbors South Philly style. This restaurant is a typical row home small cramped and wonderful. The food makes this place. As long as your ok having a conversation with the 3 adjacent tables then your fine.

A short drive from the airport.

My wife and I had dinner before driving home from the airport. The food is great and service better. Make reservations so they know you are coming.

Friday night in South Philadelphia

By John P |

Visited this small Itialian Restruant in South Philadelphia with friends on a Friday night. Had to change the time of the reservation several times and they were very understanding. Food was good and reasonably priced. The BYOB with no corkage charge is a big advantage. The wait staff was friendly and efficient. The down side to this restruant is there is no valet parking. It is located on a side street off of South Broad Street and there is absolutely no parking lots in the area. You have to ride around hoping someone will pull out so you can park. I would recommend taking a taxi to this location if possible. Parking is a real issue here.

Uber or Walk, Just Don't Drive to L'Angolo's

By John H |

Okay, if you have to drive (we did) to L'Angolo's start looking for a parking space when you are within half a mile! Best bet is probably along Broad Street. Better to arrive without a vehicle and unfortunately we didn't think of Uber until we were driving around the block looking, looking for a space. But however you can get there, get there, because it's worth the hassle. L'angola's (BYOB) is another gem of a tiny dining spot in the greatest city in the world. It's right off Broad Street deep into South Philadelphia. Porter is a one way street going east. Walking in from the front door you'll pass through the tiny kitchen where there are a couple of tables. Don't get discouraged, there are more tables in the back, but don't get too excited -- table space is limited and you'll probably have to wait unless you call ahead. The place was packed at 7, but fortunately my group of 5 had a reservation. Even so, the table was really for 4 and we made do. Menu includes a good variety of dishes, lots of pasta, some of it homemade, along with seafood, beef, veal, etc. Pappardelle (short, wide noodles) were featured in several dishes. I selected the Caprese salad (because it included roasted peppers) and pappardelle with bolognese -- not very creative, but it's what I wanted! Others at my table feasted on mussels, veal and seafood with pappardelle or spaghetti. The bolognese was made only with beef and was not as rich as the bolognese at Buona Via, which served the best bolognese ever -- and it's not in Philadelphia, but north in Horsham. We did not try any of the desserts because we were full, but also, we planned on visiting Pop's for Italian Water Ice.

Everything I could have hoped for and more ~

My son, Dean's birthday is at the end of January and mine is just 2-weeks later...So, as usual, we now celebrate both and liked to go somewhere Italiano...My brother, Tony & his wife Dyann, said this was the BEST place in the city, and they were SO correctomundo ~ My daughter Robin & Kevin joined us too ~ We car pooled down there, 14th & Porter, b/c parking is like la puttana, specially on a Sunday, and were immediately seated in this very small but extremely comfy ristorante...We bought several bottles of wine and beer which is always a plus, and started right in to drool over the smells coming from the kitchen which you must pass in order to get to your table.... We always shared in some apps but before we could do so, our entrees arrived....!?! HEY!?! NO problema...We started on them and the apps came after this time...NO biggy deal as far as I was concerned...Someone in the kitchen got it bass-ackwards...SO WHAT?!? So anyway, my entree was Spaghetti Scoglio, which is a seafood pasta...Only difference was I asked for fettuccine instead to which they were very accommodating...and all the seafood, was the type you catch off the reef {scoglio} clams, mussels, shrimp & calamari all in a delightfully light red sauce...Plus the pasta was fresh, home made!!! This was the BESTest seafood pasta I had since my Nana was alive....Assolutamente...!!! My leftovers the next day were every bit as magnifico...!!! So then I started to work on my app, which was grilled Calamari {b/c you can never, EVER get enough!!} in an herbed oil....All I could say was Madonna mio!!! This too was excellento, but I must admit a few of the ringlets were not quite as tender as the rest...But the flavors were just SO amazing...Wonderful stuff ~ We also shared their fresh Caprese Ensalada w/tomatoes and roasted peppers which was out-of-this-world-GREAT!!! Just about all 6 of us did not finish our entrees on purpose in order to leave room for their famous Canolli's, and were all very glad we did....with chocolate chips of course...I also enjoyed a superb espresso just in case I was thinking of taking a nap after dinner.... As we were gathering up our stuff and our take-home, doggy bags, our waiter felt bad about the miss-up with the apps, so he gave each all a Tiramisu to take home and enjoy, which was very nice of him, and specially later on when I tried it....Momma mia!?! All-in-all, I couldn't asked for a better birthday dinner....The bill was even do-able and everyone was quite pleased and very full, Italian style, which means 'Heaven on Earth' for us....We will have to try their new spot in Havertown, even though, I'm sure it won't have the old, South Philly charm that the original does....Hey, what can I say....My brother, sister Dawn and I were born about 3 blocks away from here at Broad & Snyder.....It was almost like a home coming for sure ~ Grazie a tutti,L'Angolo...Ciao for now ~

First visit

By Gene L |

When you walk in, after walking 4 blocks where you park your car, you feel the warmth of this restaurant right away. The staff is wonderful and the menu is different then the typical south Phila Italian restaurant, in a good way. The food was well prepared and very tasty. This will be a comeback place to go.

One of the best meals ever....

By Jeff W |

Dinner with friends who are closer than family is a great way to begin a business trip. Going to dinner at L'Angolo made the evening perfect. My dinner began with appetizers including a bowl of mussels in a red sauce, followed a main course of pasta in a lamb ragu, and ended with a canonili and some lemon sorbet. The service was great. Reservations, while recommended, are not essential. Our party of three got a table after about a 15 minute wait. Our wait staff was very friendly and took great pains to explain the menu and specials. There are dinners that a decade later you remember with great joy, and a lingering taste of the evening on your tongue. Thus was one of those evenings.

The Real Deal

By marissa v |

This small but accommodating restaurant in South Philly is the real deal. The food is fresh and delicious and completely authentic. I have been to Italy countless times and this restaurant would compete with the best of them. The service is second to none with the waiters and chefs happy to make substitutions to your liking or allergies. If it's not on the menu ask and they might be able to accommodate you! I guarantee if you are looking for an authentic Italian meal (not Italian-American), you will leave very happy and satisfied. Don't miss this place!

The Best Prepared Meat of Our 23 Year Fine Dining Experience

By K.G. Skip |

Porter Street is one way and I think we were lucky to find parking fairly close in this decent South Philly neighborhood. Having a reservation we were seated right away and greeted by many friendly faces on our way through the kitchen and dining rooms. Pellegrino served and orders promptly taken, the host was personable, knowledgeable and very clear on appetizer and dinner specials and preparation. The grilled pulpo and mozzarella with roasted pepper appetizers were delicious and let me know this dinner was going to be something special. Knowing L'Angolo is recommended for fresh pasta we had to change direction for the veal chop special. Veal chop: 2", bone in, perfectly medium rare, mushroom gravy, served over zucchini and potatoes. Being beef and barbecue people we agreed this was the best prepared meat of our 23 year fine dining experience. Chocolate mousse cake was a sweet, smooth and satisfying end to a perfect meal.

Absolutely incredible.

By Carol C |

This charming little restaurant puts out absolutely incredible flavors. Our appetizer of grilled calamari was the best we've ever had, not to mention the fabulous beet salad with a light dressing. The osso buco was a hefty portion & was absolutely delicious. The seafood pasta was loaded with tender shrimp, mussels and clams. This is a BYOB. Great and will definitely return!

Excellent Italian food from Puglia

By Gary B |

You’ll have a wonderful experience enjoying tasty Italian food from the Puglia region like burratta. Wonderful family-owned restaurant. Excellent service. We have never been disappointed. Their pasta is like none you’ve ever had. And—it’s a BYO! Last night we had Osso Buco and pasta with shredded wild boar. Everything was absolutely delicious!

First Time Here

By Connie M |

My husband has been here before and says it is his favorite Italian restaurant. His birthday is coming up and we had to go into Philadelphia so he asked for an early birthday present of a L'angolo lunch. We got there a little before noon and we were the first ones there. It's a small BYOB place- a corner rowhouse made into a restaurant. You walk through the kitchen to get to the dining room in the back. It's decorated like a Italian courtyard- wrought iron, vines, ceramics, sunny yellow walls. You don't need reservations for lunch. The lunch menu was small but there were enough options that we had to think for a bit before making our choices. The waiter brought out a small loaf of Italian bread hot from the oven with a spicy tomato dipping sauce. Husband got calamari for an appetizer (I used the leftover garlic olive oil to dip my bread), pasta with wild mushrooms and shrimp and chocolate torte for dessert. I had the penne in tomato eggplant sauce and tiramisu and coffee for dessert. Everything was delicious. Husband's entree had whole cloves of garlic in it which he generously gave me. The chocolate torte was incredibly dense and rich- more like dark chocolate fudge - with a puddle of raspberry sauce. The tiramisu melted in my mouth. We walked out of there and were stuffed we skipped our dinner. Wonderful meal and can't wait to go back- this time with a bottle of wine.

Better than I Remembered

By willgal |

We don't get to Philadelphia often for dinner (too many relatives and friends in the area), but we were attending the Penn State - Temple game again and decided to visit L'Angolo, as we did the last time PSU played here. That time, we had tickets for an evening Phillies game, and we kind of rushed through dinner. This was different - first because we couldn't get a reservation until 9 pm. We each odered one of the specials: my wife had the branzino (which one guest was raving about on her way out), and I had the lamb shank. Our waiter immediately opened our bottle of wine, and gave us a few extra minutes to decide after explaining the night's specials. We each ordered one of the specials: my wife had the branzino (which one guest was raving about on her way out), and I had the lamb shank. Before that, the appetizers were wonderful (mine was a grilled head of romaine topped with a brick of cheese and drizzled with a balsamic reduction. Neither of us could quite finish all the food. I think people in the neighborhood are used to taking home a second meal. I also couldn't pass up the cannoli with one of the creamiest, richest fillings I've ever had. We ended up being the last guests to leave, and our waiter and we were chatting and he offered us some of the last of his own homemade lime-oncella as we were settling the bill. On our first visit, someone seemed puzzled that out-of-towners knew about L'Angolo - as if it were just a neighborhood secret. By now, everyone who visits Philadelphia should realize they can venture out of center city for an excellent meal. Plus, they will get it at half the price they would pay elsewhere. Just make sure you have reservations. It seats only about 30 people.

Outstanding!

By Scott S |

Six of us (two families with one 10 year old each) just finished an incredible meal! Three of us had the best chicken parmigiana we've ever had. The gnocchi was enjoyed, and the kids loved their spaghetti pomodoro. The atmosphere was casual but the staff very efficient and professional. It's a BYOB so we brought our vodka and red wine, and there was nothing that could've been better! We topped the meal off by sharing a couple of desserts, which also did not disappoint. I couldn't recommend L'Angolo more! As people from out of town, we're sorry we can't find Italian food anything like this at home and can't wait to be back!

Small Room...Giant Flavors

By Jim_Naughton |

Everything at L'Angolo (The Corner) is authentically 'off the boat' Italian. The staff, the menu, the atmosphere, the location, the food. Situated on a corner site just west of Broad Street on Porter, this tiny spot offers giant flavors and large values. It is a BYOB establishment, so figure you have an extra $50 to $70 to invest in a wonderful meal. Recommend the always-available-on-request Sauteed Artichokes appetizer: garlic, oil, broth; Wild Mushroom Soup: a zesty dark broth and extremely flavorful. If you are seated in the kitchen area, as we were one busy evening when we lacked a reservation, you will be in for a sensory treat as you can witness the pro staff create mouth watering and (surprisingly) reasonably priced delicacies right from your table. Bravo! I have had the veal chop several times; La Cynthia, like every Italiani wannabe, usually favors the fresh, home made pasta dishes. Reservations are recommended, and sometimes very hard to get! Be flexible and call the restaurant early. If you call on Wednesday and ask for a 7:00 PM seating for Friday, and they tell you they have nothing until 8:30 on Sunday...take it! It will be worth the extra time. Be sure not to snack first, though, as the first rate cuisine from L'Angolo shouldn't have to compete with late afternoon pretzels or potato chips.

Enjoyed every bit of the evening!

By MaryAnneG |

On a Saturday evening out for my dear friend's post-birthday celebration we randomly decided to try L'Angolo as we'd both heard good things about the restaurant .. We walked into a warm, rustic, pergola-like kitchen area with three two top tables and a friendly greeting from several wait staff and host .. As it was 7:00pm we were not so unexpectedly told the only tables available were either of the two unoccupied tables there in the kitchen area .. we quickly decided we would stay as the aroma, atmosphere and restaurants reputation lured us in .. our waiter was charming and the owner friendly and accomodating, offering us a glass of wine to accompany our meal .. an impressive menu and specials, we settled on mussels white as an appetizer .. they were medium to smaller sized, steamed and flavored perfectly, not at all chewy or rubbery and served with crusty bread for dipping .. perfect! .. for her entree, the birthday girl chose and thoroughly enjoyed the lobster ravioli in a blush sauce .. on her plate were a half dozen flavorful mounds of light tender pasta stuffed with a dense lobster cheese filling .. not too heavy, but certinly filling .. I chose the Braciola (veal rolled with prosciutto topped with smoked mozzarella, braised with tomato) served with sauted vegtables and roasted potatoes or a side of pasta of one's choice so I decided on the fettuccini .. as I hadn't had braciola in several years and never any way but homemade and with beef, I was excited about this entree as it's an option not usually offered in restaurants .. well this had to be the best braciola I have ever eaten and the restaurant tomato sauce/gravy also recieves high marks as being the real thing for this old school Italian cook! .. delizioso!! .. for dessert we shared the tiramisu that wasn't too sweet, too bitter of too soggy! .. again, very good! .. we lingered for a bit afterward chatting and sipping coffee and never felt rushed out or unatteded to .. perfect evening with great service, scrumptious food and heartfelt friendship! .. I'm sure to return!!

Petite but Delicious

Tried L'Angolo last night with some S. Philly friends and left smiling. Although the restaurant is small, the food was DELICIOUS and the servers were attentive. Its a BYOB which we also love. Wish we had saved room for dessert as they looked good, but were too full from our meals. Will be sure to save some room and try a dessert the next visit.

Not bad...But

By sjs4711 |

I called ahead and the guy on the phone did not exactly make me feel welcome. He told me he had a big party coming in later and he would do the best he could to "fit me in." l'angolo is tiny, so I guess I understand. So don't go here for a nice quiet meal. No private conversations, because tables are very tight. The service and the food is OK. I felt that the prices were high and they added the tip on the bill. I know more places are doing this, but it just doesn't sit well with me. Especially in a South Philly row home restaurant. There is no friendly neighborhood feel for me, not on this day. So if you are going to pay big center city uptown prices, why not go to center city? At least you'll get more space and a classier ambiance. I probably won't be back.

Like being in an Italian family house for dinner

By jas45 |

A friend was in Philly from Texas and wanted to try local Italian food. Read reviews here and decided to try this place. First, you better have reservations, second you'll be lucky to get a close parking space, third you better be experianced in narrow street tight space parallel parking, forth you must not object to eating close to others or having your conversation drowned out. Imagine Thanksgiving dinner (35 people) at an Italian family's house in a city row home One inside you find that it's very small, a converted city row home, about 12 feet wide. We had 7:15 reservations and were promtly seated at 7:15 while walk-ins that got there prior to us waited. Our guest had the Caesar Salad $8.50 which he remarked was really good, had I ate that much salad, 6" plate piled 6" high, I would not have been able to eat anything else. Wife had the Lobster Ravioli (blush sauce) $18 (about 10 raviolli) which she remarked were "excellent". Guest and I both had the Braciola (veal rolled with prosciutto topped with smoked mozzarella braised with tomato) $20 which we both enjoyed. The guest enjoyed his Key Lime pie while wife & I had the canollis. While we enjoyed the plain we LOVED the chocolate. Now, while no one in our group is Italian and may not be the best judge of "authentic" Italian food I felt very reassured of the quality since the place was packed with Italians and more waiting to get in.

One of the best Italian Restaurants in South PHiladelphia

This tiny little find in the heart of South Philadelphia has great food and Pauolo is a great cook. You need to make reservations for here. it is a byob.

Perfection on a plate with great service, too.

By Holly W |

We found this place by accident and loved it. It's a quaint setting for amazing food. Our lunch was perfect. We started with the grilled calamari--perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned. No rubber rings here. I had the beet and goat cheese salad. Perfectly balance and not over dressed. The goat cheese was creamy without being too strong. Two people had the chicken breast parm. No patty of any kind here, just a breast of chicken cooked to order with tomato sauce that was fresh and bright. I enjoyed al dante pasta--not undercooked and tossed with mushrooms, rosemary and shrimp. It was an earthy dish but not heavy or too earthy. Portion size was perfect--not too small, but not gluttonous. Great food, great service all at a great value, too. I'd call this the perfect place to stop for lunch or dinner.

A Real Gem

By malcolmmark |

Small, quaint, smells delicious as you walk in the doors, this restaurant was a nice find that some friends took us to. The grilled artichoke special were very large and tasty. We split an arugala salad that was wonderful. The duck noodle dish was uninspiring, but the gnochi dish was great. It is BYO and the waiter was very attentive, accomodating, and pleasant. A nice place to visit and well priced.

Great South Philly Italian

Small BYOB in South Philly. Great, friendly staff. Grilled calamari appetizer is awesome. Great menu, also wonderful specials. All seafood was fresh, dishes were really delicious and homemade, open kitchen was great too.

Egregious

By tolivo |

Had dinner reservations for 2. Stuck in a corner. 1 guest had back to the wall and I was touching the chair behind me. Most uncomfortable restaurant I have ever been in. This was not the first time I experienced this problem, but it will be the last. Head waiter, or maybe he's the owner, is ignorant, rude and sarcastic. I don't know how he keeps the customers that he has, it surely isn't his personality. To boot, the food isn't even that good. Cold most of the time. There are many other restaurants I can spend my money in.

A Huge Pleasant Dining Surprise

By 2$Bill |

My wife and I are from Virginia Beach and were in town for a concert at Wells Fargo. I went online and wanted Italian near our concert and hotel. L'Angolo was what we had chosen... Oh my word, what a fantastic experience. From the friendly way we were greeted when we arrived, the staff was personable and very friendly. The food... well let's say it was over-the-top. I had the Veal Milanese and my wife had a gluten-free pasta dish with shrimp. The presentation was what would be expected of a 5-star high-end world-class restaurant. John the owner, made us feel at home and I promise the next time we will bring family and make a family event of it. Thanks for your warm hospitality and everything else! $2 Bill from Virginia Beach

This was our third visit to this small out of the way restaurant. It has just a few tables but feels like you are in Italy. We love the grilled romaine and all of the pasta dishes. Bring your own bottle.

Fantastic food before a game or concert

By 2of7 |

L'Angolo is a small place near the stadiums in Philadelphia. The food is authentic Italian, prepared with style and great flavors. Home made pasta or gnocci, and great meats / seafood. The last time I enjoyed a veal chop which was killer. And always start with the artichoke hearts (incredible) or the grilled calamari (fresh, smoky flavor, with lemon garlic). Don't go here for atmosphere - go for great Italian food.

It never disappoints.

By Jay1012013 |

L'Angolo's is one of our favorite little hidden gems in the city, so much so that I almost hate to review it for fear that it may get to well known and we won't be able to get in. It is a very small place with no more then 20 tables (and that is if they were all tables for two). I have been taking clients here before games for years. It is only about a mile from all of the stadiums and we can always find parking at the meters along Braod street. The restaurant is less then 100' off of Broad street so it is very convenient. My girlfriend loves it there and so has all of the people that we have taken there or recommended it too. It is a BYOB and you can order anything on the menu and it will be great. As always if there is a spice or something in particular that you do not like always ask what id on the food just in case. Other then that it will be cooked to perfection.

Service by sloth

By Vassi B |

This restaurant, overall, is pretty darn amazing. If my review was solely based on food, I would be giving out 5 stars EASY. Food: The Gelato is simply amazing. I have had gelato everywhere from Las Vegas to Los Angeles to Denver and this, by far, is the best Gelato I have every had. I am sure this would rival gelato you would get straight from Italy. Nuff said there. My co-worker and I came here for lunch and had a Panini. It was great! I wouldn't say it was the BEST panini in the world, but it was quite good, nonetheless. Atmosphere: This place is clean and beautifully decorated. I didn't get to see the upstairs dining area so I can't comment on that, but over all, the place is reminiscent of a small, boutique eatery you'd find in Europe (minus the obligatory outdoor seating you'd find in Italy). Service: The service was pretty bad, hence the one-star deduction. Once we got in we waited, and waited, and waited. I finally asked the really nice gelato serving guy if we needed to just pick our own seats and he called the hostess for us. Hostess came to greet us from upstairs, looks at us up and down, asks us if we had reservations (we said no), makes a loud sighing noise and proceeds to place us in the furthest table possible (as a side note here, the table ended up being really neat as it was right next to the kitchen and we could see the chefs build salads and beautifully arranged plates). I wish the bad service ended with the hostess...oh if that were only the case. Our waiter, who seemed like a nice enough guy, was probably the slowest land mammal on the plant. If he were any slower we would be collecting social security by now (and I am not close to collecting SS). Our food was delivered to us by another wait staff, probably because our waiter was still shuffling across the hall and our food would've gotten cold. To put this into perspective, our lunch took one hour and 25 minutes. Did I mention we had a panini?? It's not as if they had to grow and grind their own wheat to make the bread (or maybe he did). I am really hoping that he was slow because this was his first week and didn't know how to take an order or deliver and order or run a credit card or deliver a credit card or give back the credit card... On the plus side, the little booklet he used to take our order was quite charming. Also, I will add that the folks behind the gelato counter are SUPER! They recognized my co-worker from the night before and even made small talk. Full of personality that one!

Hands down on of the best in Philly

By gfarina8150 |

This restaurant's food is fresh and well prepared. A true measure of any restaurant is it's ability to stand the test of time. This one is well on it's way. Philly has seen an influx of BYOB's over the past several years, some stand out. This is one of them. Over the years, I have never had a bad meal, waited long for my reservation or had bad service.

Like being in Italy

By sssbbb |

Have traveled to Italy numerous times. This is authentic Italy Italian food. Excellent service (I mentioned to our waiter Nicky after dinner that everything our party of 6 ordered was excellent except my veal chop was overdone-and they immediately took that off the bill--wow). Gluten free pasta available and tasty. Eggplant parm appetizer, grilled calamari, lamb bolognese, veal paillard, etc was flawless. Excellent value--dinner for 6 people with 8 appetizers and 3 desserts came to $285 including tip. And very warm, welcoming, comfortable ambiance albeit a bit tight therefore not a place for very young children.

Taste of Italy

By ernest a |

Excellent dinner on Saturday night in South Philly. Reminded me of my visits to Italy and its restaurants - small, loud, fun, authentic (real Italian) wait staff, and fantastic food! First, the atmosphere is pure South Philly: a renovated row house that seats about 30-40, where you raise your voice to hear each other. But it's fun! It's a BYOB, so carry what you need. As for the food, the off-menu artichokes are a must as appetizers. My wife is hard-to-please, but loved the cavatelli as her entre. I'm a tough grader too, but loved the seared tuna. Parking is easy if you park on Broad Street and walk 50 feet to the restaurant. So getting to and from is easy. Finally, make the reservation well in advance. We'll be visiting again, I can assure you.

South Philly is where it's at.

By John_H12847 |

Small, quaint little Italian restaurant off of Broad St. on Porter. Great specials. BYOB, but they helped us with that by sending one of their staff to the store for a bottle of good wine. Everything was made in house with an emphasis on authentic.

Best Italian restaurant in Philly

By Bahia123 |

We have been going to L'Angolo for the past 15 years, and the quality of this family-run restaurant remains consistently high. Fish dishes are excellent, as are the veal and pork chops. Desserts are home-made, and try the delicious mascarpone cheese cake. The restaurant is small, seats about 30-40 people, and reservations are essential. Pick a night when there isn't a local Flyers, Phillies or Eagles night game, because fans come here for dinner before the game. John, the manager, is always quite accomodating,, and will see that you are well-served

Boisterous Italiano

By kriss4travel |

Went here after a last minute call, thanks to the suggestion of past reviewers. Glad we did. It is essentially a small corner home converted into a kitchen and 2 tiny rooms for seating. Since we are from the midwest, this was new and entertaining for us, starting with trying to park: the drive thru the tiniest of streets and alley ways with parking along one side; angle in parking or parking in the middle lane. The tiny non descript entry through the kitchen; entering the tiny dining area full of laughter and an east coast in your face vibe; and yes, BYOB means bring your own bottle if a wine drinker. Did I mention the food? Dont expect americanized italian, think fresh, few ingredients, authentic, chunks of real parmesan, a good char, lightly seasoned, letting the food speak for its self, headliners being the star. We had the calamari, arugula salad, lobster ravioli and veal - all very good and very reasonable. If you want a Southie experience to fill your soul as well as your stomach without totally emptying your wallet, this is the place for you!

May be my favorite Italian BYOB restaurant in Philadelphia - my home town.

By RAK350 |

As someone who travels for business, I do from time to time eat out in my home town. I do not say this lightly, but L'Angola may be my favorite small family Italian restaurant. This gem of a restaurant only holds @ 35 people, but it is worth it. Their grilled artichokes are solid (ask even if not on the menu they usually have some available). Their gnocchi in a gorgonzola sauce is as good as it gets. Plenty of great seasonal entries. Entrees are dynamite. What I like is everything has a homestyle feel to it. From Bolognese to veal discuss to their lobster ravioli. I think I've tried everything on the menu at least once. Finally there is a small but personable wait staff.

Charming neighborhood spot with excellent food and fantastic service!

We popped in tonight without a reservation and were accommodated graciously. The menu is creative without being pretentious, fresh ingredients and excellent service. Highly recommend and will be back!

South Philly spot

By gogreen1 |

This past Friday evening 7 of us dined here, BYOB in south Philly that was quite a find. We were greeted and seated very courteous and promptly. Dining area is quaint and cozy, service by John was great. We ordered appetizers which we shared and had 6 different entrees, which were generous and served very hot. I would return as soon as time and schedule allows. Put this restaurant on your south Philly list, you will not be disappointed.

Scores 5 On Every Aspect

I last was here nearly 5 years ago and rated it 5. 5 seems to be a magic number because that's what I'm rating it again! If 5 years is a long time to have not been back, it's because the location is in deep South Philadelphia and is just not on my radar but having said that, the trip is worthwhile. Everything about this restaurant comes through with flying colors. The rooms, if tiny, are inviting and tables are well placed so conversation is possible. The service is efficient and accommodating; one on my party was torn between two pasta dishes so the owner, who was also serving, offered to bring split orders of each. The food was delicious (we're a bunch of picky eaters) and everyone loved their dish. The portions are generous. The prices are modest. We loved everything about the place. I'll be returning in less than 5 years!

Fabulous authentic Italian food.

Fabulous real Italian style restaurant. L’ Agnolo’s is a very small restaurant. Food was absolutely authentic and delicious. We were a party of 10 and we were able to be accommodated a few minutes earlier. Reservations are a must. BYOB is certainly a plus. We will return when we are in the area.

Charming

Great service and staff. Food was good - I'd stick with the pasta next time. Mixed seafood grill special was good - not great. Pork was excellent.
