Wonderful Lunch

By Jack H |

We are in town for business and saw this place as we were driving down the street and decided to give it a try. It was a wonderful lunch and everything we had was yummy. The atmosphere was warm and convivial and the staff was very attentive. We will definitely keep this restaurant in mind the next time we are in Austin.

A great place to eat when in town. Do not be discouraged by the location or by its looks. The food is great.

We were in the city of Austin for business. We were looking for a good place to eat an authentic Mexican breakfast, and we found what we were looking for at this restaurant. The service, the food, the coffee, and those fresh hot tortillas were all cooked just right.

Incredible Homemade Food

By Petethekid |

Wow. This place is great. It's a little house with 10 or so tables (including the porch). It's BYOB. We had chile rellanos and a salmon enchilada plus the queso. Also had the pralines and tres leches flan for desert. We at every spec. Sides were great too. So we're homemade tortillas. Wonderful spot.

Don't be fooled by the outside..great breakfast

Took suggestion from hotel desk mgr and came here for huevos rancheros. Very small little house with maybe 10 tables and one man waiter and cook. But do not let first appearance keep you from great food. We walked in and picked up a plastic-covered menu and sat down. Waiter-cook took our order and quickly brought out the food. Coffee cups and service were set up as a serve yourself operation, but we were having juice. Hubby said his huevos rancheros were very good..eggs over easy, nice refritos and potatoes. I opted for a smaller fare of a refritos, avocado and cheese whole wheat burrito. Very tasty. As we were finishing people started coming in so others know a good deal when they see it.

Fantastic Mexican cuisine

By Robert F |

I was visiting some friends in Austin and I asked them to take me to their favorite Mexican restaurant. We went to La Cocina de Consuelo and I have to say that they made a great choice. I love Enchiladas and I ordered a chicken and beef enchilada. They were absolutely GREAT. The service also was great and the food was very reasonably priced. Much better food than some of the regular and "touristy" Mexican and Tex-Mex places found in Austin.

Something for the whole family

By E R L |

...took the mob here for a family get-together with an aunt from Colorado. Even she found the food to her liking. (Colorado Mexican is to Hispanic as military music is to music.) Picky kids had bean tacos. The rest of us had assorted tacos, chalupas, enchiladas, rice & beans, etc. "A good time was had by all."

Worth A Drive off of the Interstate

By Keith S |

My daughter has lived near for years and when she decided we should try it simply because it was open and nearby I wish we had gone the first time I was in town. It is small and the staff is excellent. The food is fresh and tasty I had cheese enchiladas and a crispy taco that were as good as any as I have ever had and I love cheese enchiladas The queso is what queso should be. A bit spicy and thick enough to stay on the freshly made tortilla chips. The tortillas are made onsite freshly each day

Perfect breakfast burritos

By GoodJeanne |

Stopped in for breakfast burritos to go. Ordered two but one would have been enough. They were delicious and the perfect homestyle Mexican style, with house-made tortillas.

Delicious, freshly made meals!

This restaurant is a gem. The offerings are varied and we enjoyed a combination platter with two enchiladas and one taco. I had a spinach enchilada and a potato one. The taco that I enjoyed was avocado in a soft corn tortilla. The jicama and mango salad was very tasty. I cannot wait to return to this wonderful restaurant.

Better choices

By bk_aus |

It’s not that it was bad, but wasn’t good either. Cute little place, cozy with some interesting art and colorful walls. Hot sauce was VERY spicy - admittedly I lean towards mild but love chips and salsa like everyone else so will tolerate a little heat so as to not leave my chip barren - but geez, just couldn’t take the heat here. More power to you if you can. Tacos al pastor - eh; not a ton of flavor all in all. Mango/jicama salad seemed a day old. Black beans good enough. Would I come back - no probably not. Once was enough.

Small Quantity, HORRIBLE Service, Tasteless Food

By imperfectlybeautiful |

I swear, I thought we HAD to have the wrong place after reading all these "great" reviews of this place and trying it and being so badly disappointed. I was sooooooo excited to try this place after reading the reviews. I LOVE fajitas, they are my favorite food and I just love Mexican / Tex-Mex in general. So after driving completely across town, and seeing how small and cute the place was, I was excited to try it. First complaint..... service. Our waiter seemed completely disinterested in actually SERVING us and didn't forget one thing, or two... he messed up 3 times. I corrected him once and let the other ones fly. Instead of bringing me a coke be brought me a water. I didn't say anything, just decided I'd just drink the water. I hate complaining. We had asked for tortillas with our queso. He forget them. Again decided not to say anything, just ate it with the chips. The queso seriously was tasteless, runny, just blah. Nothing special what so ever. We both ordered the fajitas for $10 each. We THOUGHT we were getting an awesome deal for fajitas before the plate came. Another lady brought it out, my guacamole (which doesn't even come with, it's extra) wasn't ordered. Our waiter even forgot THAT, so that one I did correct. He brought out the guacamole. The "plate" of fajitas was so UNDERwhelming I was let down right then. It was tiny! There was enough meat for MAYBE one and a half tacos, a small amount of beans and rice and some pico de gallo. EVERYTHING was completely bland, flavorless, absolutely nothing special to it what so ever. My dinner partner felt the exact same. She got chicken, I got beef, so we could both try each others. Both were tasteless, the meat was dry and tasted seasonless. It seriously tasted like whatever passion they MIGHT have had for cooking good food... packed a bag, RAN out the door, hitched a cab and sailed to Antarctica. I sit here and read the reviews and wonder if these people have never HAD good mexican before, don't have tastebuds... or are all family/friends of the owner. I'm very sad to say as excited as I was to try this place and no matter how much I was truly WANTING to love it.... it was a huge..... HUGE fail. I'd love to believe it was a fluke, but the experience was just too bad to even give it another try.

A hidden gem

By Max B |

my family if 5 has been coming here every Friday for years. everyone leaves happy with their meal which is hard to find! Lovely family owned business. it’s also byob so you can bring a margarita with you :) if I could give more than 5 stars, I would.

Amazing Breakfast Burrito

By Indiana_Momm |

Awesome breakfast burrito! I had the turkey bacon/potato and my husband had chorizo/potato burrito and two drinks and our bill was $9.00. There are only 6 tables, and you order at the counter. The adorable owner was moving people in and out very efficiently. Exactly what we were looking for to enjoy our last meal in Austin!

Unusual! Delicious!

By SfromTX |

This little restaurant has been in my neighborhood for several years at least but I never remembered to go. It's in a small little house right next to the popular bakery Upper Crust. I went here with my family just yesterday, and it was such an amazing discovery for us. We ordered the "breakfast burritos" which are filled with 3 ingredients of your choice and only $2.85. This is a great price considering the burritos are huge and filling. Avocado is one of the fillings, and they aren't stingy with that. Also, the potato filling is almost like a hash brown but softer. The best part for me are the tortillas - they are thick, fluffy, and must truly be homemade. So delicious! I had the barbacoa burrito, and it was really delicious - very filling and not too greasy like some barbacoa can be. The salsa was also very good - seemed to be garlicky. I haven't tried this place for lunch or dinner, but breakfast is so wonderful I want to go back every day!

A small but well run Mexican restaurant with really good food.

By Phillip F |

We had a family lunch at this restaurant and were pleasantly surprised. The service was good, the salsa perfect and they served us a wide variety of dishes, all of which were judged to be very good by my family. We will return to this restaurant. Only note I have is that it is small and parking is limited.

Awesome service and food

By vinay b |

The food is made exactly how you want. Small and awesome place to have breakfast. The owner is very polite and takes time to understand your requirement.

Friendly service and great food

Mexican and Italian infusion didn't quite measure up

By wanderlustgrlz |

I went to the restaurant with 5 others. Queso and chips were ok, chips were store bought. Salsa was average but had added sugar so it was a little sweet for my liking. The caldo was delicious. It was packed with vegetables and had plenty of chicken. The flavor was spot on. Enchilada poblano had good flavor but was a bit spicy for the average white guy. Like a slight kick and it will be to your liking. The Italian enchilada had a red sauce that also had sugar in it so again it was a not very good. Mole was not to bad according to the resident Mexican. Chicken fettuccine alfredo was given a 5/10 Waitress was nice and provided good service. There was nothing here to pull us in again.

Great food, unhappy owners/employees

By Greg H |

This place has great food at a reasonable price especially since they are losing out on the profit margins associated with alcohol sales. The one thing that stands out to me keeping me from rating this establishment as a 5 is the fact that it seems like each time I am there, they are understaffed and the employees/owner is unhappy. It is like they wish you were not there. Just yesterday, the employees were overheard asking why we were there as they close at 2pm on Sunday's. We arrived at 1pm. This place confuses me. It is great food in a nice atmosphere, but don't expect to be welcomed.

I Really Want to keep this Place a Secret.

By BigHenry911 |

Where shall I start? First off, I wish the owner was my Abuelita (grandma). She is very sweet and will sometimes bus tables. Second, Let me next talk about the cons: We found this joint in busy location but so far after visiting four times within a few weeks, we always find a way to get parking spot. In other words, very tight area to maneuver unless you have a compact car. There is parking in the back. The place is very small inside and out. Any more than 12 skinny people will be crowded and with 8 big-boned people it will be congested. You can feel like you are on top of people. However, I make it work. My name IS BIG HENRY. Finally, they close at 3PM. Not really a complaint since the owner is the cook and she's sweet. Now onto the Pros: The food (Rating 1/Poor to 10/Best). 9 Rating - Hot Sauce (Would be rated a 10 but I like mine a little chunky). 10 Rating - Pico de Gallo (Fresh and usually snort it all up). 8 Rating - Wheat & Flour Tortillas (Very large, thick, and tasty - Can sometimes be on the slight crispy side). 9 Rating - Tortilla Soup (It was very delicious and probably the right portion size. However, I love Baby A's bowl size much better). 8.5 Rating - Beef Fajita Taco w/Avocado Slices & Peppers & Onions (Very good & very large. It isn't strong in taste as far as seasoning is concerned but once I put the Hot Sauce & Pico de Gallo in it, it just becomes a moment for me - also more like a burrito than a taco & tender). 8.5 Rating - Huevos Rancheros Plate (I've tried both Sunny side up and over Medium - Very good - Sauce not too hot, beans & potato strips very tasty). 7 Rating - Barbacoa Plate (wife tried and liked it). 10 Rating - Always have self serve fresh coffee available. I want to try their Carne Guisada Tacos but they only serve on Tuesdays and sometimes Wednesdays - they usually sell out. Also note since I'm trying lose a few tonnage, I've been drinking my own water. So not sure about their beverages. They usually have the newspaper there but it's 2014! I like using my Galaxy Note Edge (ok soon will be). The secret is out. So with that said, I hate everything about this place, don't come by so I can be selfish and avoid the crowd & lines. Lol. I highly recommend it. As for the service, the guy is the owner's loyal employee for years. He has yet to mess our order up the last several visits. Btw, Tell them their favorite grandson, Big Henry sent you. Okay I can wish.

LOVE this hole in the wall

This TexMex restaurant is fantastic and affordable! Definitely worth driving off the beaten path for!

My current fave in a town with 500+ Mexican restaurants

By jrsaustx |

When the soulless corporate Blue Meanies at Marriott forced the legendary Las Manitas out of business, I called the owner to ask her, "So now where am I supposed to eat Mexican food around here?" She said, "Go to Elsi's and Consuelo's." Oddly, these places are both on Burnet Road - not a street brimming with good restaurants, but there you go. I like them both, but Consuelo's is my current fave. It's a small, non-descript, but clean place, with only 9-10 tables, including a couple outside. In the kitchen you'll find the redoubtable Consuelo herself, while members of the family wait tables. On the menu you'll find most of the Tex-Mex standards you'd expect, sometimes with little twists; e.g., one of my favorite dishes is the potato and cheese enchiladas with chipotle sauce. I haven't found anything like it anywhere else. It's clear that Consuelo starts with only the best ingredients, unlike many of the other 500+ Mexican restaurants in town. And the prices are so reasonable I sometimes wish she'd raise them so I wouldn't have to worry about her going out of business. There are some great sides. The black beans are a cut above, and the mango-jicama salad is a must. The fresh lemonade washes the hot food down very nicely. I tend to judge a Mexican restaurant pretty strictly on how good its guacamole and salsa are, and Consuelo's are impeccable. The salsa is a very straight-ahead traditional recipe, but perfectly balanced - not too heavy on the garlic or tomatoes and wonderfully hot. I buy it by the pint and freeze it at home for those times when I can't get up north to the restaurant -- and those times when the restaurant is closed. Oh, yes, we need to talk about that. Do check to see if the place is open before you go. Hours are non-standard and a bit tricky. For example, as of this writing, they're closed on Saturdays (!) and Mondays. They also currently close between lunch and dinner. So check.

Yummy home cooking!

By BBabe |

Okay, the hours are a little funky so plan ahead for dinner. That being said, the food was really good basic Tex-Mex...served just like you were at home but having some nice acquaintance bringing your food to you! Very laid back. Room in the back for al fresco. No liquor license, but bring your own margarita fixings and they provide glasses and good nature; time slips away in this neighborhood gem!

Local and Loving It

By Jim T |

This little local hidden neighbourhood gem is the antithesis of your average chain restaurant. It is tiny (maybe a dozen tables, max, including the little side porch) and the menu is somewhat limited, but choices exist are stellar. Service is friendly and there is extra parking in the back. Can get crowded, so timing your visit right can be an issue. Each meal is homemade and delicious. Chips and the home-made salsa provide a slightly spicy start to your meal. This review is the equivalent of sharing a "best kept secret". You're Welcome.

Yummy

Home cooking from the Texas Valley

By Incompitence |

I was sorely tempted to walk back into the kitchen in this converted house, to check and make sure my mother in law wasn't back there. I have never had fideo this good outside of her house. There are three menus, one for each breakfast, lunch and dinner, so while they offer a large number of dishes, they focus on a small set of those during each meal time. This makes for relatively fast throughput in the kitchen (although during peak hours they could use 1/2 a person more serving staff). This tiny dining room has a total of 6 tables, with only one of them seating more than 4. There are a couple tables out back, with the extra parking. Open at the crack of dawn until after dark, this place is always ready to fill you with tasty goodness. They also have free WiFi in case you don't like the company you are eating with (or while you are waiting for your take out order).

Home cooked Mexican

By Soondite |

Literally home cooked. This is nothing like your chain Mexican joint. All items were good. Service was good.
