Horrible Service and Crappy Food

By agentgables |

My mother and I are visiting the Buckhead area of Atlanta and decided to go to this restaurant after reading great reviews about it (albeit other locations). We walked in and there are 4 tables crammed together and the "kitchen" is basically right where all the tables are. It was hot and the 2 male waiters were laughing and BS'ing with the two male cooks and "too busy" to seat us (even though there was NO ONE else in the restaurant. Finally they noticed us standing there and seated us. We had to keep calling them over to the table to ask questions, ask for suggestions, etc. Finally they took our order. I ordered the Paella (HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE...what a mistake). The rice was actually very tasty but there were only 2 small shrimp in the whole thing and a piece of chicken (the back of the chicken or some other undistinguishable part and it was soggy or mushy). Mom got the steak burrito. The shell was overcooked and cracked into pieces---not soft at all. The meat was ok she said but it didnt come with sour cream even though the menu said it had sour cream in the burrito. I had to get up and go to the guys in the kitchen to ask for some. of course, the waiter added it to the bill and even though it was only 60 cents, it was supposed to come with it. The waiters never came to our table after taking the order---NEVER, not once--to check on us. They weren't busy doing anything except joking aroudn with each other in the kitchen. Finally I had to stand up again and ask for the bill and they brought it in about 10 minutes and then we paid at the register at the front door. The guy didn't even say thank you. This was today at 4pm, June 22, 2012. Very bad service and crappy food. and out 2 items plus one beer and one can of soda (yes, can....so no refills of course) all came to $26. Not terribly expensive for a late lunch but i would have had a better experience at taco bell for about 1/4 the price. Avoid this nasty hole in the wall at all costs. Thanks.

Best Shrimp Burrito of my Life!

By Rebekah T |

A local friend brought us here for burritos and we were not disappointed. I got a shrimp burrito and it was perfect. The salsa was way better than typical Mexian restaurant salsa (nice and chunky) and everything comes with rice and black beans! Our service was excellent as wel.

Great food and server, however noise level just from other employees moving and screeching tables and chairs was unbelievable! Had to leave only because of so much excessive noise. Awesome seafood paella, served quickly.

Take Out!

By Warren K |

We ordered soft tacos with chicken and beef. Black beans and rice. Taco chips with guacamole and cheese. All really good! It took forever for us to get our takeout order in because nobody would answer the phone!! Their tacos really have a spicy kick! Wow!! All good and relatively inexpensive. Oscar night!!!

All time favorite!

I have been frequenting this place since I moved to Atlanta in 97'. Its inexpensive and the food is consistenly good. Its also very nice to your pockets. My favs are the fish tacos and seafood paella. Oh and the mango margarita on the rocks!

Nice Lunch Spot!

By BugattiBoi88 |

Moving from the west coast down to the south it's very rare that you can find a nice authentic Mexican food joint! I know good Mexican food when I eat it and this place isn't half bad. My co worker suggested this for lunch and I was a bit surprised on how well they turned out to be. The place is a bit small and can be packed really quick around lunch time we were able to land a table luckily! The price is very affordable as well which is always a plus! I went with the Fish Burrito with Salmon and it comes with this creamy jalapeno sauce(extra) was so good! Co-Worker ordered the Veggie Tacos and they were good as well. I will return!

Used to be good. Now it's not.

Misleading menu, charged for unordered items.

By Sarahthebold |

The food here is decent, and the balcony is great in nice weather, but I just had chips and queso and guac (at an off-meal hour), and was charged extra for the chips. Three dollars extra. The manager kept pointing to the part of the menu where it says that chips and salsa are extra if you don't order a meal. I told him that they were brought to me automatically when I sat down and that I hadn't ordered them. He finally-- angrily-- adjusted my ticket by taking off seventy-five cents for salsa, still charging three dollars for chips. I asked him how people typically eat cheese dip without chips and he just pointed again at the menu. The restaurant had several empty tables when I was there; I wasn't taking up a spot that could go to a dinner patron. And I feel completely robbed. Cheese dip comes with chips. Otherwise what's the point? He doubled the price of what was on the menu. And was really mad when I questioned him about it.

Paella Party

This is my favorite place for Paella, their home made salsa is great and the upstairs patio is wonderful

La Fonda is one of my favorite inexpensive/casual restaurants. I love the Paella and their drinks are good too! Great casual spot to eat!

Love it!!

By MCG1238 |

I love La Fonda.. Been to 3 of 5 and they are all the same. Salsa and Margaritas are the best ever (literally). The food is really good and priced fair. Tacos are the go to... I get the 3 take one home for later. I tthink it's one of the best places in Atlanta for Mexican, my wife lives the margaritas, salsa and the restraunt but doesn't think its a top 3.

Consistently Delicious

By GPBurdell67 |

I've eaten here many times over the years, always for lunch, and it is consistently delicious. Their complementary chips are fresh and their salsa very fresh and habit-forming. The menu is Cuban/Mexican and varied. I almost always order the Cuban Reuben, a delectable sandwich of chicken, cheese, and slaw on thick bread heated in a press. Black beans and rice come on the side. Prices are reasonable. Service is fast.

Great lunch spot!

By Carolyn G |

My co-workers and I have lunch here on a regular basis. Consistently excellent Cuban and Mexican food. Great chips and salsa. My favorites include the fish tacos, spinach and shrimp quesadilla, and cuban sandwich -- all served with yellow rice and black beans. Big portions -- you'll never leave here hungry! The wait staff is attentive and friendly. I've never had a bad meal here!

Consistent

By JonesiePonsie |

There are several LaFondas in Atlanta and they are pretty consistent with their food.....which is very good. Always crowded when I've been there and it's a place where you can take children. Not fine dining and they don't purport to be...but good, tasty food for lunch or dinner. Price is reasonable. I'll go back next time I'm in Atlanta.

Best Paella for the Price

By Anubis218 |

The restaurant is good. Is really more like a mexican cantina than a latin place. They serve some cuban dishes and paellas. The Paella is the house specialty and I have to say that is pretty good.

One of the Best on Ponce

By ohrhilly |

I'm a huge fan of La Fonda. If you are a fan of seafood paella, then this is your spot. We ordered the paella for two and it was a huge portion. My only issue was there were about six shrimp and scallops in the entire dish. The horchata was divine. It's a clean spot with fast service. Very easy on the wallet too.

From fresh salsa to yummy spicy fish tacos, this little gem in Midtown is so good. I have yet to go and NOt be HAPPY with my food and service and they have great margaritas.

Disappointing

By Mary K |

Ate at this restaurant because of the reviews. Wish we didn't! Walked in and was ignored. Didn't know to seat yourself and no-one offered what to do. Finally sat down and took forever to get salsa and chips. Everyone coming in after us got theirs. Ordered the seafood paella and the Arroz con pollo. The paella didn't have much flavor or seafood. It was suppose to come with sea scallops but had bay scallops, one of the reasons I ordered the dish. The salmon pieces were very dry and overcooked. The arroz con pollo had more flavor but the chicken was terrible dry and tough. The only thing fresh and flavorful was the salsa. Would never go back. Service was very slow also.

Casual and Affordable Fun

By James H |

A group of associates and I stopped here for dinner last week and enjoyed ourselves a casual spanish dinner on the patio. Yes, they had a paella that was decent, maybe a little dry for my taste. The group eat everything and drinks were pretty good including a few pictures of red sangria. This is not a fancy place but casual, fun and affordable. BTW, the service was really good.

Something for everyone

By drbsti |

I ordered a sandwich and all meals come with black beans and yellow rice. My colleague is on a crazy strict diet and ordered grilled chicken and vegetables and loved it. It was a great break from salads. It’s a small, cozy place that is clean, fast, inexpensive, and good. I’ve been coming here when I visit Atlanta for the past 10 years.

Your average Mexican restaurant

By Alexandra R |

Being Hispanic I have high expectations for Mexican restaurants and this didn’t really wow me. Everything was good but seemed really basic. For example I got the chicken burrito and the cheese inside was just cold shredded cheese. The quest was yummy as were the chips but I’ll definitely be looking for another place to try!

Salsa & Chips & Guacamole Oh My!!

By Shannon P |

My barometer for a tasty Mexican restaurants is the flavor and texture of the salsa and the crispiness of the tortilla chips. If those two basics aren't on point, then I know I'm in trouble. Well, let me tell you, Lafonda gets 5 stars for both and their menu selections don't disappoint either. The Ponce de Leon Avenue location is my favorite because there is a second level which allows for outside dining and an energetic view of the city and which adds to the lure of this particular location. My personal menu favorites are the shrimp quesadillas with spinach, the shrimp tacos with their house spicy sauce, the guacamole which is always fresh and chunky and the fried plantains which are sweet and fried to perfection. They also offer a creamy queso with or without jalapeños which is delicioso. The parking lots aren't large so you have to be prepared for street parking in the neighborhood. I've dined at this location and all of the others for years and they all have their own energy and feel. What I appreciate most about Lafonda is their consistency with the preparation of the menu items and the efficient service. I've never been disappointed and I don't ever expect to be. The parking

Average Tasting Food

By Steve C |

This is a place that tries to combine Mexican, Cuban, and Spanish food under one roof. It looks decent on the inside. My girlfriend and I decided to try it since it is next door to Fellini's. We both ordered horchata while I ordered chicken tacos with chipotle sauce and she ordered shrimp and chicken paella. The chipotle sauce was horrible. It had a strange aftertaste. Her paella was good. Because of the chipotle sauce, I would probably not return. I will stick to La Hacienda or Papi's for Mexican and Cuban respectively.

Great Salmon Salad

Their salmon salad is one of my favorite salads in the whole city. It has fresh artichoke and the most amazing mustard vinaigrette dressing. Nice rooftop deck is great in the spring and summer. Food service is very fast.

All Day Every Day

By Luckyduck2012 |

Highly recommend this place. It was so good. We showed up as a large group and we were able to find a spot on the patio. Service was fast and the food was delicious. We had the paella which I highly recommend. So flavourful. We would definitely return!

Late lunch/snack - pozole

Perfect salsa. I had pozole with smoked pork, cabbage, radishes & avocado. Loud atmosphere. Great, predictable service and food.

A Favorite

By Malie |

This is one of my favorite spots in Atlanta for a casual meal - I also think it's worth a visit if you are from out of town. First, I love the margaritas. I'm a lightweight drinker and I only need one - they are delicious. La Fonda's feels very authentic - for example, you can order stuff that is not on the menu (e.g., orchata) and they will bring it to you. They won't have all of your favorite Latin items, but they will have some. I tend to stick with the veggie tacos and fish tacos (always good). Their black beans are also good. I've gone with friends many times and over the years, we've sampled a lot here - it has all been good. And they certainly have some of my favorite chips and salsa in Atlanta.

Fast and delicious

By golfgal2 |

Went for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the delicious flavorful enchiladas and burrito. Both were vegetarian and awesome! Chips and salsa brought out right away. Service fast and friendly! Would definitely recommend!

I love this place

By Khandie |

La Fonda is one of the best places to get Mexican,Cuban and Spanish food they have a large menu so there is a lot to choose from and I have never been dissappointed. It is in expensive and the portions are large so it is good value for money i always end up taking half home and the salsa is one of the best i have tasted to date. All the staff are friendly from the waiters, cashier and chefs.

Good Mexican with strong ritas

By Mark H |

This is pretty much average Mexican but the margaritas are delicious. The value is fine but this place gets pretty packed often.

Good quality tasty food

By Alex H |

Paella was good and frozen margaritas definitely hit the spot. Mojito was not very authentic but not bad. Service after the food came was slow, but overall a good experience.

Fantastic Mexican Food!

By Tommy1983 |

My family ate lunch here after a morning at Fernbank. The building doesn't look like much. It reminds me of an old gas station or mechanic's shop. Nothing too fancy. The bathrooms were nicer than you'd expect for the exterior. I had the Shrimp Burrito and my wife had the Pork Tacos. Both were outstanding, but I tried both and would have to say the pork was better. Even the rice and beans were full of flavor. I didn't ask but I'd guess they marinate their meats for a while. This is definitely not one of the standard mexican places where there's numbered combination plates and a "speedy gonzalez" special.

Great food.

I don't know Spanish

By Lorne S |

And the server didn't know English. This was a problem. The food was ok, not incredible, but really reasonably priced. I doubt I would go again, but this wasn't a disaster. The pizza place next door looked more interesting

And it was amazing. The veggie rice in a skillet was delicious and our waitress was always there checking on us. We will go again.

Work luncheon

By Armond B |

The food here is great! I have so far had the Steak Tacos and Salmon Tacos. The steak is tender and the taco and ingredients are always fresh. The lunch menu items do not take long to be brought out. I recently had the salmon tacos. They were great! I highly recommend eating here.

We got the paella for two.

By Saul G |

We got the paella for two. The online menu says $17 for two, but now it’s $25 (if you decide to increase the price, please increase the quality or quantity of the item to justify that). The portion was disappointing. I enjoyed the chicken and seafood pieces within the dish, great flavor, but we noticed the rice wasn’t thoroughly cooked. It was incredibly greasy, and it comes with a crap-load of chips. These chips are meaningless. There’s not even salt on them. It’s pure grease with no seasoning. Why.

Mediteranean and Cuban

By Katee D |

I had to have the paella. Others had a variety of these special dishes. The tostones had a delicious spicy garlic dipping sauce. Could have eaten that with a spoon. The portions were larger than life but I managed to extract all the seafood from the paella. SO GOOD. Moderate prices. Friendly staff. Love eating on the roof

Perfect date or family night

By Rebekah G |

Delicious everything! Amazingly fresh salsa and perfect cheese dip. Huge, shareable portions. Nice outdoor seating!

Give this place a miss

By lolgillygirl |

The fired plantains were very greasy, the sandwich had mounds of cheese on it, not melted or warm, no "special sauce" they talk about in the menu, and 3 easy to see thru slices of ham. I was very disapointed after hearing great things about La Fonda Latina. Everything was flavorless and just sad.

Tasty & Inexpensive

By dajafacai |

Their PAELLA is great. I also like their grilled vegetables. Nice outdoor seating.

Delicious, fast & fun

By Leadville98 |

I have been hearing about La Fonda over the years, but mired in the far north suburbs, have not had an opportunity to visit until I met a friend visiting Atlanta who was staying downtown. We dined on the covered upstairs patio, early for dinner. Noise level did not interfere with conversation, the service was fine-not memorable in a good or bad way-food arrived quickly, was hot and fresh tasting. Fish burrito, like there fish tacos , was dressed with a delicious and slightly spicy sour cream based dressing. Rice and beans also good, though a touch dry. All in all, a very good meal reasonably priced for the area.

Great place!!

By Jmekins08 |

Visited Atlanta for a graduation and a few of us meet up here for dinner. Great food, laid back atmosphere and reasonable prices. The mojitos were outstanding!

Amazing Paella!

By Miicha04 |

Their Paella is amazing! I can't even remember when my first visit was all I know is that I have been back several times over since then. The paella I mentioned comes in a cast iron skillet keeping it warm. I love rice! And this dish is amazingly great. My last visit was ruined by some loud talker on a cell phone. I told my waitress and I understand there was probably only so much she could do but that marred my experience although I recognise the restaurant cannot help it if rude people visit.

Yum!

By RRT1983 |

I've always passed this spot but never tried it till recently and I'm glad I did. I was surprised to see that it was actually a Cuban restaurant versus the typical tex-mex. I ordered fish tacos with salmon, yum! Best fish tacos I've had in a while, they give you two but they are very hearty. My husband had Arroz con Pollo and it was delicious, great flavor. The only thing I didn't love was the guacamole, it was a little bland. All in all good food, I would go back.

Very okay

By Michael W |

Did lunch here recently. Menu has a good range of selections and prices are good. I had a bocadillo de bistek and my dining partner had the paella del mar. The chips and salsa were quite good and the service was a little slow but okay. The entrees were only fair. Neither the bocadillo nor the paella had a lot of flavor and character. The black beans and rice also were bland. Soo-I would not shun the place but I am not in a hurry to go back either.

Love the Fish Tacos!

By 404ever |

I get the same thing almost every time I go for the last 8 years. A couple of times I have ventured off into the fish salad, cuban sandwich and chicken tacos. But my favorite is salmon fish tacos. If I could make it at home I would. But they have some secret sauce in their that keeps me coming back. Oh, and the kids like it too. My kids only eat the cheese quesadillas.

Excellent Mexican Food!

By Tom P |

We’ve been dining here for 15 years and always return. The service is prompt and always very friendly. I love the tacos “suaves” - Spanish for soft tacos. Their black beans are wonderful + the yellow rice. The entire menu is delicious. I’d gladly give them a “5” but refrain from that as they do not heat their plates. This is a standard practice in Mexican cooking. Always a favorite spot with our family!

Great Lunch!

By Busy Marie |

After visiting the Gallery 63, the employees there sent us down the road to La Fonda Latina for lunch. It's one of their favorite places to eat. So we hopped in the car and came down. If a overly full parking lot signifies anything, it shows a popular place to eat. We drove around the building three times before a spot opened up. All four of us had a great lunch. Everything on the menu looks great. It's hard not to only order the Classic Cuban sandwich, but we all did get something different so we could share.

Great Mix of Mexican, Cuban and Spanish Dishes

By GPBurdell67 |

La Fonda Latina continues to turn out terrific Latin food in their several locations. I am especially fond of their very fresh salsa and Reuben Cubano sandwich. I get it almost every time I visit and I never get tired of this version of an old favorite. Add attentive service, a large menu, reasonable prices, and both a patio and upstairs deck, and you can see why La Fonda is usually busy for both lunch and dinner.

Excellent service and food

Amazing service with friendly servers. The food was great! We ordered paella burrito, tacos, bistec and soups. All delicious! The bartender needs some review of the drinks recipes though.

We have lived in Atlanta for years and never tried this restaurant. What a pleasant surprise. The food is delicious and the service was very fast and friendly. The weather was nice so we sat outside and is was very comfortable and charming. We loved this place.

Great Artichoke & Spinach Dip

By TombRaider55 |

Really good Latin fare. I like the warm Artichoke Dip which is served with large chunks of tender artichoke and flavored perfectly. Order the bowl-sized for sharing at the table. The sodas are served from an ice-cold can with a glass and straw. There is a large selection of Latin pressed sandwiches, Quesadillas, Paella, Mexican favorites, burritos, enchiladas, and tacos. The staff is very friendly, and the place is clean. In the warmer months, check out the seating on the rooftop.

Unexpected surprise

By ohrhilly |

Went here with some girlfriends last weekend and fell in love. I wasn't expecting to like it, but I did. Nice casual vibe and nice waitstaff. I ordered the beans and rice and maduros. The beans and rice were wonderful, but the maduros were burnt. The prices on the menu was really good and had nice serving sizes. My friends got the paella and it looked wonderful. The desserts were to die for - had churros and they were excellent.

Highly recommended.

We were just passing by the place and decided to have dinner there. Best decision ever! The place was full. I was expecting a long wait to be seated and served, but no. One of my local favorites

By AKBGa |

I have been going to la Fonda for over twenty years now. I love the paella and the Cuban sandwich. The salsa is always fresh with a nice cilantro flavor. The cheese dip and guacamole always start the meal off right! Definitely worth visiting one of their locations when in Atlanta.

Our favorite for over six years!

By eeeevaaa |

Not just fish tacos, but grilled salmon tacos with the perfect sauce and toppings. My husband and I get these and the grilled salmon enchiladas. Nothing competes with these. Good margaritas and guacamole. Consistent kitchen is a must and they deliver. I don't know about their other locations, but the Ponce location rocks.

a great latin restaurant that serves a wonderfull paella and arroz con pollo (amongst other things). the food is tasty and ample, if not super sized ! and very affordable too. my husband is a fan of their margarita and fresh salsa. add the patio ambience and you have a winner for summer afternoons and winter nights :)

I guess people like this place because it's cheap? They do a variety of Spanish style foods and all are too salty yet bland. Really bad. I guess if you just wanted ships and salsa and a margarita it may be ok.

Not so good

By jjm61879 |

Ate at this restaurant yesterday for a late lunch/early dinner. Service was ok, but food was not very good at all. All meals come with beans and rice that was cold. Burrito is more like a giant taco that was torn and hard to eat. The queso clearly came out of the microwave as it was like a small cup of white boiling lava..Very average to below average mexican food. Probably won't go back.

Yummy Paella, Mediocre service

By Sandy B |

Our first visit. Met family from out of town here as they chose this place for the mix of Cuban, Spanish and Mexican offerings. Had heard a lot about this place and actually expected it to be nicer in terms of ambience. No biggie since the food was quite good though. Our table had the cheese dip which is an enourmous serving when the large is ordered. We were a table of 5 adults and there was far more than we needed. Tasty, hot and spiced well. When the dip was delivered we were almost out of chips. Chips were not forthcoming and we actually had to flag someone down to get some. Bowls are quite small and we ended up needing to flag a second time. For dinner we had a seafood paella for 2, a veggie paella for 1, a cuban sandwich (served with black beans and rice) and fish tacos (Salmon - tilapia is also available) served with black beans and rice. A large side of plantains was a perfect accompaniment. All of us were pleased with our own choices and impressed with those around the table we tasted as well. There were enough leftovers of the 2 paellas for another 3 meals...honestly, a 1 person order is plenty for 2 people. The seafood paella was loaded with seafood, the veggie loaded with veggies. Pricing was reasonable at just under $100 for 5 of us which included specialty juices and alcohol. Would eat here again when in the area.

I was visiting friends and we decided to go here for lunch. It was small and we couldn’t sit outside (too cold) but they were quick to find us a table, get us seated. We were going to get pizza next door and after seeing the long line decided to walk across the street and check out La Fonda. We had really good salsa and chips followed by two huge cuban themed entree's. I had the pork chops (some of the most flavorful I've had) with great black beans on the side. My wife had a half-chicken/rice dish that was fall off the bone perfect. Great service and very reasonably priced.

Good casual, inexpensive Cuban food.

It's okay

By Claudia L |

I expected the place to be Cuban as it has Cuban dishes but it's a mix of Spanish, Cuban and Mexican. The food tastes good but it's not as good as it could be. Perhaps if they stuck to either Cuban or Mexican it may be better. Overall one should try it to see if it suites your pallets. I just moved from Miami so I am critical when it comes to Cuban food.

Love the food and the staff at La Fonda's. This is a once a week choice for us, and we are never disappointed. Best Steak Taco in town. I've told other locals, they didn't believe me, they tried it...I am now their hero. Another secret, the magaritas are big, strong, and delicicious. Can't say enough good things.

Excellent!!!

LaFonda Latina on Ponce

By Martinatl |

I have eaten at this and other LaFonda locations a number of times so I thought it might be useful to provide my feedback. First the food is tasty and consistent between locations and visits. After a long work day and a lack of desire to prepare a meal, we decided on LaFonda. It is not fast food but it is also not fine dining - let's say casual, relaxed. My wife had the paella (for one - $8.95) and a margarita. I have eaten the paella before and it is acceptable for a stove top preparation although it does not compare to true paella which can take days to prepare. She enjoyed the paella and drink very much. I ordered a Bocadillo Latino (basically a Cuban Sandwich) ($8.25) with black beans and rice. The Bocadillo was very good, black beans average and after adding several spoon fulls of salsa, the rice was pretty good. Our meal tab including tip was just a bit over $37.00. The main floor seating is not my favorite but the upstairs deck was closed for repairs and it was a bit to cool to sit on the patio, so we sat on the main floor adjacent to the open/visible kitchen and dish washing area. Like I said, casual and relaxed. We will go again.
