Warning!! Overcharged Card Payment - Do Not Trust This Establishment!!

By A P |

We passed this bar on the way back to our hotel and decided to go in for some evening drinks. The cocktails were fine, nothing exceptional, but the issue came when we paid. We paid by card and, as is normal in the US, they present you with a receipt on which to write the tip, which they then take afterwards using the card that has already been authorised. This bar took our receipt and decided to add an extra $10 onto their tip - we have the cardholder copy that proves the discrepancy. All attempts to contact the bar subsequently have been ignored. Do not trust this establishment with credit / debit cards - if you must go, only pay with cash.

Peruvian Food done right

By Yoshi |

Awesome location right on the water, great service, fantastic food and top notch decor. Our servers name I forgot, but the food was spectacular. Grab a drink at the bar early.

Amazing even for a land lover

By Nathan Wise |

I will start by reminding you all that I am not a seafood lover but I loved loved loved La Mar! We made reservations for lunch which I highly recommend making reservations. The location is amazing being right on the water and their service was fantastic. Our server had some wonderful recommendations for the seafood lovers at the table and me the land lover at the table. The empanadas were so good and the surprise of the day was the Lomo Saltado! I still dream about it. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left (well we still talk about it) we loved each and every moment. To be consistent with my review standards - the drinks were amazing! I had my usual but sampled other drinks such as the Prickly Pear Margarita! It was delightful.

Excellent ceviche, lovely location for Peruvian food!

By graceinbeijing |

Three of us were here for dinner, it was our second visit. The classic ceviche is probably the best we've ever had, with the exception of one place in Peru. We also loved the Nikkei tiradito and the causa. We have the seafood paella the first time we were here, which was excellent and enough for 2-3 people. This time we shared the lomo saltado and the pork shank. While the beef in the lomo was super tender, we would not order it again because it has a sweetness that is unusual for lomo saltado and the french fries were not stir fried into the dish. The pork shank was delicious and came with a really special creamy corn and quinoa polenta. We look forward to going back!

Outstanding, but...

By Daniel H |

We met our friends at La Mar Cocina for the first time last night. The interior is absolutely beautiful. Service was excellent. Food was very creative. And flavors were great. But everything was way too salty. I think that the executive chef needs to do a tasting of the dishes as well as the cooks. Otherwise we loved it !

Great to try the peruvian kitchen!

By 544marionp |

We came here a couple of times during our visit to San Francisco and were pleasantly surprised by the Peruvian food. No one had ever tried this kitchen before. The food was great, the waiters could have been nicer and more patient.

Best meal I had in San Francisco

By Valerie Q |

Fantastic Pervuvian restaurant. Great food and lots of the menu is gluten free (or easy to adapt). No gluten free menu but waitress was very helpful. Best food I had in a week eating out in San Francisco. Highly recommend

One of my local favorites!

By David |

This place is great whether you're going for happy hour with friends, going on a date or for dinner with the family, This spot has a high end atmosphere without trying to be or without taking itself too seriously. The staff is great, friendly and attentive. They have a great happy hour if you're looking for quality food and drinks without breaking the bank. I often come here with my partner and since introducing my family to it, they love this place as well. I really recommend the prickly pear margarita they have, everyone should try it at least once. Already looking forward to my next visit!

Not what it used to be

By Anna S |

We went to La mar restaurant last Friday night. The restaurant was extremely noisy. I ordered the ceviche classical and the fish had an aftertaste which meant it wasn’t fresh . It was also not marinated long enough and the chunks were too large which could be the reason. I wanted the chicken skewers and again I couldn’t eat them because I felt they were not cooked through as chicken should be. I felt for the price that we paid for each item it was not as it should have been. The only thing I enjoyed were the crab causas we ordered they were good very good. I’m afraid I won’t be going back

La Mar it is !!!

By Marishechka |

We had a table for five outside by the water front . It was a very pleasant setting and as a bonus you could see a boats. The food is flavourful and consist of a great selection of ceviche , grilled fish and meat , There is an extensive wine list and a large menu . So we ordered 2 bottles of white chilled wine and grilled octopus appetiser , white shrimp ceviche ,fried calamari , fries and a large fish for 5 people to be grilled. The food has arrived beautifully prepared. The server deboned the fish and all of us had a great portion of fish with fries . The quinoa salad as side dish arrived with fish . The server was very friendly and helpful. We had a great dinner and enjoyed the view on the bay and the ships .

Great place for a light seafood meal

By guybeau2016 |

Went there with friends. The fish is amazing and prepared in unique ways. Do not be afraid to let your server guide you with suggestions. Don't miss.

Party of flavor

By Jules |

What an exquisite experience! Full of flavor, variety of textures and colors! What a joy for all the senses! We tried the California causa, tiradito laqueado, ceviche clásico, beef anticuchos and aeropuerto. All sooo delicious and at the same time authentic, yes they do have some “twists” to the original Peruvian recipes but those just enhance the flavor. I would definitely love to come back!

Great view for large parties

By Deborah F |

Enjoyed a set dinner with over two dozen colleagues - what a treat. Our tables were by the screened windows on the harbor, and once the fog lifted, the view was amazkng. The food was excellent also. Our set courses came at a steady pace. The waiter was attentive to food allergies and diet restrictions, and did a great job of substituting alternatives throughout. It (pleasantly) surprised me that the tight tables and packed room still allowed us to hear each other, at least in sets of four. The tezxellent service here likely keeps diners coming back.

On the Bay with great view

By julesofthesea |

Perfect service, drinks and dinner. We tried a little from all parts of the menu and all was extraordinary.

A touch of Peruvian ambiance

By dgarlasu |

The place is located on Embarcadero, close to the ferry terminal San Francisco. I’ve liked the dishes, there is plenty vegetarians or carnivores may choose. Rich choice of wines and cocktails. Nice view over the Bay. It is not a cheap place, on the contrary but the ambiance is nice, we’ve enjoyed.

Incredible Experience!!

By JDI |

We ordered the Thanksgiving meal pickup package for the first time this year. It was absolutely delicious we are very grateful!! High quality ingredients and incredible taste. And you can tell the chef really cares about his guests. Highly recommend we definitely will plan to have it again! Thank you

Top shelf all the way!

By hutchss |

We have dined here quite a few times when we have been visiting in SF. Today everything was perfect! It was lovely non-windy day in SF with puffy white clouds against a blue sky. We sat on the patio which is such a treat as you are able to look out at SF Bay. It is also quieter than inside. Our waitress, Fernanda, was cordial, efficient, and offered us perfect service throughout our meal. But the food was the best ever! I enjoyed Berejena Criollo which had eggplant, chutney and a mixture of fabulous flavors. Hubby had chicken skewers (Anticucho de Pollo) which was incredibly flavorful and cooked to perfection. We shared the Empeñada sampler, and each had a glass of great wine. I highly recommend this restaurant! Today we did not have reservations (Sunday around 1:00), but I would suggest reservations because it can get busy. Thank you for such a great meal!

pricey restaurant

By 639dentist |

it is average tasty but very expensive restaurant, service is poor, very busy place, our waitress for got to bring starters and brought them after the main course . Drinks and main courses are pricey for the quantity and taste.

Poor Customer Service Experience

By SfReviewer |

We were sitting outside by the water at 5:30 and it was lovely. About an hour later a lot of clouds rolled in and the wind picked up so it got quite cold. My 90 year old grandmother was visiting from south Florida and is accustomed to warmer weather. I asked three different people if we could move to one of the tables by the heaters for our dessert/coffee. There were 5-8 open tables by the heaters under the patio cover. Each of the three people said let me ask the hostess and then didn't return with any answer. I had asked the waiter as well who said he would check and let us know, then he asked if we wanted to order dessert. I gave him our dessert order and then he came back with the coffee and went to put it down on the table. I became frustrated and did not understand why he was not acknowledging anything about multiple requests to move tables. As he went to put the coffee down on the table I told him that we don't want dessert/coffee if we can't move to another table, as it is too cold. I was snippy in my communication due to my frustration with the situation and feeling that multiple requests to move were ignored. I later apologized to the waiter for my frustrated tone of voice. We were finally allowed to move and it was much more comfortable. Overall the meal/experience wasn't worth the $200 that we spent and I left feeling disappointed and dissatisfied.

Authentic Peruvian

By Ambassador725824 |

Excellent food and portion sizes- 5 stars. I haven’t had Peruvian food this authentic outside of Peru before. The service wasn’t the best but we were there on a really busy Friday night so that could be why. Even though it took a while to order and something was forgotten it was worth it.

Hands down some of the best Peruvian food ever!

By AnureetR |

Nice location and outdoor setting. Could enjoy the lovely weather minus the wind! We had the 4 course taster menu which I highly recommend. Great fusion of flavours and well worth the price!

Excellent family lunch

By Enrique M |

Excellent family lunch. We tried the Nigiris, octopus anticucho, classic ceviche, California cause, scallops, rice with crab and grilled whole fish. Good white wine from Godellonespañol. All very good, well advised and excellent treatment. Congratulations to Victoriano López, head chef and the entire team.

Wait staff oversells

By Timothy1999 |

If you want to overpay here is your place!. The waiter is into salesmanship on how he can direct you to the most expensive plates on the menu. For 4 of us for lunch he started out suggesting the $99 shareable appetizer plate followed by the high end expensive main courses!! Two of our guest were from back east and thus just assumed these are normal SF prices. So one ordered a $44 halibut and a $67 good but not great bottle of wine. The others got appetizer size salads for $16 and $19, which sound reasonable but were tiny dishes. I live in SF and believe me this restaurant is focused on the uninformed out of town tourist where they can oversell their higher priced items. Being on the Embarcadero they probably can get away with this but for we locals this is one to avoid unless you are foolishly wealthy!

Really Really like Puruvian food before going here. Service is only okay

By Helen L |

My boyfriend loves Puruvian seafood so he thought the food was good. Me, on the other hand, is luke warm to the idea. I do love seafood though. There was no compromise on this menu. You will either love this place or wish you had ordered pizza. We both agree the service was horrible. It was over priced but so are most places down by the water. We will not be going back. Even though there was a lot of empty tables on the patio, we were sitted inside and told there was no space on the patio - odd......

Nope

By Patrick N |

My night started off poorly and somehow kept getting worse. The waiter encouraged me to order a margarita which was essentially a glass of lime juice with no other discernible flavor. Then the chicken empanada for an appetizer was average tasting however not worth the price of $15. The lomo saltado sounds like it has potential but it was basically beef and tomatoes cooked in a pot and put on a plate. Again with no flavor. And again charged a premium over $40. The arroz norteno i will say is good but not great. Definitely the way to to go of you like to spend close to $50 for shrimp. I understand paying extra to sit outside and have a nice ambience but there was little more to experience than that. I’d say skip it.

Food is good, overpriced and

By Coral |

Food is good, overpriced and server is Kira always available for the price you pay. They don’t give you the bottle wine menu unless you ask. Wine by glass is ridiculously overpriced.

Pricey but good

By Jonathan D |

Had our first experience of Peruvian food here and really enjoyed it. Service was good and the food very well prepared. You can see the staff making it which is always a good sign. It was very full and we were lucky to get a table. Prices are high sadly and it did feel very rushed and busy.

Unprofessional, rude, and unapologetic

By MadridGalapagos |

We’ve been to this restaurant several times, celebrating moms 80th etc. Last night seven of us flew in to celebrate yet another major birthday and hostess told us our reservation was for 5– despite fact we had confirmed the night before. She would not yield and eventually sat us in undesirable table. We found our confirmation online and returned to her station only to have her reply that “someone had changed it back to 5, at 1 pm”— we had to ask for manager who eventually seated us where we had reserved. It was a very unpleasant way to begin. Hostess never apologized nor did anyone else. TOTALLY unpleasant,

Bad service

By Frida P |

The restaurant was busy but not overcrowded. Even so, service was a big disappointment. When the waiter finally showed up, I asked for an extra napkin (to try and fix our wobbly table myself) before we even ordered any food and didn’t get it for our whole stay. The waiter asked me if we wanted all the food at the same time and I said yes. Which did not happen, even though he asked me! The dish man tried to take our plates before we even had gotten half of our food because he thought we were done. The food however was ok. We didn’t see the waiter for the rest of the night until I stopped him and asked for the check. With this kind of price list I expect better food and way better service, even though the restaurant has a nice location.

Excellent as usual

By Matt H |

This was my 5th time to this restaurant and it seems to get better. The 4 course meal is so well planned and each dish complements the next. Can wait to come back.

Great food and atmosphere

By Elki I |

Came here with four other people on a Saturday evening. Naturally, the place was packed, but we had reservations and were seated promptly. The place is beautiful, very open and airy. Service was friendly and on top of things: glasses refilled quickly, the root vegetable chips and dip (which we loved) brought to the table timely, etc. Two people ordered the classico cebiche, one the quinoa salad, another a special of the day calamari plate, and I had another special, an avocado and crab salad with fried green plantains. We also ordered some beef and chicken empanadas to share. Everyone raved about their dishes, we thought everything was just delicious, and the empanadas in particular were really good. Regarding the views, if it's during the day, you're going to get a lovely view of the water, even if you're not sitting outside. In the evening, you won't see much unless you're out on the patio. Also, the noise level that other reviewers have mentioned can be an issue. If you're wanting to carry on a conversation over dinner, you're not going to have much luck. Finally, the cost. Yes, it's pricey (our dinners averaged about $50/person.) However, you're in a great location at a place that serves a very sophisticated menu, so factor that in. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening here. I would definitely return, but maybe during the day, or happy hour to enjoy the view and take advantage of their empanada prices!

Wonderful dinner, wonderful view

By Dale W |

Wonderful experience. Beautiful outside patio right on the water with beautiful view. Friendly waiter. Great menu and food. Quinoa salad was one of the best salads I’ve ever had (and I am a salad snob). Emblem Cab was the best wine of our trip so far (although I can’t find it anywhere else-even in Napa).

This culinary jaunt is simply magical and mouth watering!

By oppyga |

10 of 10! 2 couples + 2 ceviches + 2 entrees + 1 dessert = gastronomic delight + adventure for your taste buds + loads of fun. This restaurant sources the freshest scrumptious seafood + presenting them in a not to be forgotten presentations. The tuna ceviche and the black cod entree cooked in banana will be indelibly etched among your culinarily DNA

3 stars

By tripcesare |

Food quality it’s out of question. We had meal, fish, salads, wine... the problems are the big noise in the background and the smell. We were in the big room, and was quite impossible to talk and we had our dress and hair with persistent smell of food. The ambient is cute.

Great food, pisco sours, service - not cheap, but worth it

By jpescatore |

I had a great shrimp on rice, while my wife had cerviche and some kind of ah tuna deal. The pisco sours were expensive ($13.50!) but phenomenal. Tasty taro chips and very attentive service rounded it all out. Only thing we didn't like were the fried plantains - heavily breaded and deep fried, no real taste.

Serendipitous Find

By Sue Ellen R |

The service was stellar. We three were seated quickly at a table outside with a view of San Francisco Bay. We ordered a bottle of Still Water and a crab dish that served 3. Ample portions, some was left over to take home. The food is freshly prepared, beautiful presentation and delicious. Prices are little high.

Excellent flavors

By Veronica B |

Very good, just like in Bs As. We ate very well and tasty. To recommend. Eating something different Attention makes a difference too!

I was here a few years ago

By Ivan Sarria |

I was here a few years ago and I was not impressed. This time with friends we share more diverse food and I can tell that all the food we tried fulfilled the expectations. Great food and service . Sealed a return for sure.

Gourmet Peruvian Food

By Mariana |

We had lunch at La Mar as soon as we arrive in SF. Food is good but pricey for quantity and service provided. I also had better ceviches, in Lima or São Paulo.

Amazing food with views

By Clark G |

Sit outside for sure! Service is amazing, wknd list extensive, and the food is always served to perfection! Gluten free safe and attention to detail is the norm.

Large venue with good views, mixed food experience

By eatgosee |

IG: eatgosee It is important for me to start this review with an acknowledgement that I was here for business in a very large group. Why is that important? Well to be honest I fully appreciate that cooking to a large number of people (possibly 200+) means that you do not get the same type of menu as well as attention to detail on individual items as I would expect for an à la cart dining experience. The canapés that circled around the venue from the waiters were enjoyable especially the seared salmon nigiri and the meaty crunchy empanadas with herbaceous spicy dips. These are an early indication that the food here was going to be enjoyable. Moreover, the pisco sour is was strong and a generous Phil. However they were perhaps a touch too sour and could do with a little more balance of sweetness through passionfruit or a hint of syrup. To be honest through the menu was not very clear that this was a Peruvian restaurant. I would rather come back here for the à la cart menu to get a better sense of what the kitchen is capable of. The quinoa salad, roasted chicken and other options were nice but not particularly special and certainly not an indication that this is a self-described fine dining restaurant.

Truly outstanding

By Dutch_Travel-R |

We visited the La Mar serving Peruvian cuisine at Pier 1 1/2 at the Embarcadero for lunch. It was outstanding in every possible way. Delicious food, great atmosphere and superb, genuinely friendly service. A gem, we will certainly visit next time in San Francisco.

Go with a group, so you can try everything

By Toni G |

Really enjoyed sitting on the patio for dinner. Ordered one thing from each of the categories so we could sample. Had a pitcher of the prickly pear margaritas. Great Service. Especially enjoyed the Limeña Causa. We also ordered the Anticucho Tasting plate. We added the Pulpo, which was the only disappointment. Not worth the extra money in our opinion. One member in our party was vegetarian, so we also ordered the Quinoa Chaufa (vegetarian) and the Veggie Cebiche. For dessert, we had the el mousse de chocolate, which was fantastic

Don't miss this place

By Junid L |

One word : Fantastic Second : taste is unbelievable. It doesn't matter you order , taste is excellent Thanks for one of the top restaurants I visited ever

Delicious

By Anika B |

My experience at La Mar Cebicheria wqs one I will remember. We started with the Cebiche Clásico, which was very fresh and for sure one of the better ceviche dishes I’ve had. I loved how the fish was sour, but had sweet potato to offset it. However, the texture of the corn was slightly offsetting for me, because it confused me with Next, we got the Pulpo, which was my favorite dish and stood out tremendously to me. The octopus was amazing and tender by itself, but between the sweetness of the squash and crunch of the fava beans, it added some amazing flavors to the dish, especially when eaten with the octopus. Finally, we got the Lomo Saltado, this dish had some great flavors, but did not come with enough meat. I was sort of overwhelmed with the amount of potatoes, red onions, and tomatoes. However, did enjoy the sauce that was in the dish and the flavor in it. Overall, the dishes were excellent, but I found some of the dishes had a little too much potato. Although it was needed, the ratio of potato to dish could have been better. Overall, my experience at La Mar was amazing and will be remembered for a while.

Absolutely outstanding!

By cinema14618 |

This review is for La Mar Cebicheria Peruana. Our party of five dined there for lunch on 3/4/24. Unlike my review about Fog Harbor Fish House from the day before, this place was amazing! Perhaps because I had never been exposed to Peruvian food before, the flavors were unexpected and for me, quite unique. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you what everyone ordered because most of the names were terms I had never heard of before and I wasn’t paying much attention to the names of what everyone ordered. I can say that I ordered their Churrasco Del Pescador which was definitely great. I also know one desert was three types of sorbet and another was two types of mousse formed with some sort of coating in a round yellow ball with a stem that looked like a smaller apple. Unreal! But really, everything was consistently special. Even the homemade chips and the two sauces they brought out at the beginning were fantastic. Our server was really knowledgeable, had a great pace, was patient with us and gave us appropriate privacy. There was a gorgeous view as well. I wish I could be more specific about what we were all eating but each of us were extremely happy with our meals. When I think of high cuisine, this is the kind of experience I strive for. There were no negatives. All in all, it was a really special experience for everyone. Absolutely outstanding!

Superb Peruvian cuisine

By StevenandSara |

Excellent food and outdoor patio ambience. Everything from authentic Pisco sours to ceviche to seafood main courses were excellent, Setting outside was spectacular, Much better version of the La Mar in Miami.

Best if not for a business dinner

By Laurence D |

Despite having reserved for a business dinner at 8:15 pm for 10 people with a deposit, they made us wait 40 min for our table. We had a nice table outside on the pier. Overhead heaters were too hot and we had to shut them down and the breeze from the ocean crated a draft. Food was excellent. Service was professional but could have been friendlier.

Good Cebiche and Piscos - Everwhere

By Cinci_cap |

I have been in several of their locations, in Lima, Santiago, and Buenos Aires, I knew what to expect. Great Ceviche and Peruvian dishes and a good Pisco Sour. Was not disappointed at all. Food was great, Service was awesome (speaking spanish helped to uncover some gems in the menu) and as an experience was great. We were sat at one side of the bar, and it got crowded very fast, also a Peruvian band started playing and it got loud too, i was surprised with this since La Mar everywhere I went was not a bar type of place. Did not bothered me at all, if you prefer a quieter ambiance there is a good are beyond the bar. Summary: Great place, great food, great Pisco Sour. if you are around this is a great option.

delicious cuisine

By Fabio C |

excellent Peruvian restaurant on the San Francisco embarcadero. According to a Peruvian friend, this is the best. They brought me a beer late, but apologized and offered it to me. Well done, I appreciated it.

Fabulous flavors

By msquared |

We opted for the chefs tasting which required the entire table to participate. We are all glad that we did because the flavors that were presented were amazing. We ordered two versions of octopus in both for tender and tasty. Flavor with not had very often and I highly recommend trying it out. Like other people have stated the service is slow because they are busy and probably understaffed but worth the wait. Mo was stretched, but was very good at serving us..

Outstanding taste treats!

By hutchss |

Hubby and I dined here this past Sunday. Had only been here once before over 5 years ago. We enjoyed sitting outside on the patio. Our waitress, Preetha, was absolutely perfect. She was pleasant, courteous, and fun. The food was delicious and tasty. Hubby had salmon and I had a beef dish (Lomo Saltado). We split a quinoa salad, too. Fresh taro chips were served with a dilicious sauce (mayo, Peruvian mint and jalapeños) which were such a taste treat. And since it was hubby's birthday, he was treated with Tres Leches for dessert. Such a great dinner and evening. Thank you!

If you like Tapas - this is the place

By richardbL6837CD |

A very large restaurant with lots of seating over looking the bay. If you like small plates with big flavors this is the place. Lots of fish dishes to choose from as well as a few meat ones. The wait staff was good as well as the food. Nice lighting and a good feel. The prices are a bit on the high side, so be aware.

Great experience and food

By Sandra Y |

The server was incredibly attentive, the seating on the outside patio had a spectacular view, and food was delicious. Tried Saltado, Leche de tigre, Scallops, salmon, and tres leches for dessert. Enjoyed very much and will return!

Excellent ceviche

By jihelman |

The restaurant has excellent ceviche, great empanadas and a very friendly service. The ambiance is popular, large restaurant with many tables and the consequent background noise. Still, a good meal if you like ceviche.

Group dinner - very good

By Diane T |

We shared several appetizers, entrees and all were exceptional - especially the dungeness crab appetizer. Service was very good - especially for a large group.

Expensive, but worth the price

By Crista S |

Family style dishes, and each one phenomenal. We tried four different ceviches, all quite different and delicately delicious. Amongst the table, we also had scallops, squid, octopus, eggplant, beef heart, chicken, and rice. The eight of use left plenty full, but not fit-to-burst. Nothing was under $18, and most was upwards of $35, but don't let the price deter you. This is my staple SF restaurant.

Fresh food great service

By Erik Ensing |

Together with a colleague we had a fantastic lunch here. The personnel was very friendly and the food freshly prepared. It’s a very spacious place where you can have privacy and a nice view over the water. Price and quality are well balanced. Definitely a recommendation.

Great dinner

By Scott M |

We were a group of 8 and was recommended to come via a local friend. It did not disappoint. The service was exceptional as was the food. I'd love to come back to try more dishes. The scallops with jalapeno's was delicious.

Wonderful restaurant

By Timothy L |

We went to this place for dinner after Coqueta down the street was closed and screwed over folks with reservations on Christmas week. The service, ambience and food were all spectacular. Highly recommend.

Explosion on taste buds - fresh ingredients perfectly prepared

By odw66 |

Nice restaurant with two bars - good music and great Peruvian drinks with Pisco. Great food with fresh ingredients- wonderfully prepared. The Bandeja Cebichera with Cebiche, Tiradita, Causa and Nigiris is a perfect mix to taste it all. Taste explosion - great with wine - good selection of wines by the glass. This will change my future schedule in SF - less oysters - more chebiche :)

Best Peruvian in Town

By Gi M. |

This is our favorite Peruvian restaurant in town. We love e everything about this place. It has amazing food, drinks, atmosphere and service. Love, love, love!

High praise to Victoriano Lopez

By Koenigralph ⛑👑⛑️ |

As Peruvians, we are of course very proud when a compatriot successfully represents Peruvian cuisine abroad. The food is a force. As always, we tasted many plates and enjoyed every plate throughout. The arroz norteño and the lomo saltad is outstanding Ambience: A little noisy, with the restaurant occupied to the last seat (and it still had many guests waiting for a table Price/performance: it is above the upper limit, but quality has its price to recommend: definitely! I don't know a better restaurant

Fire ceviche

An experience

Very nice restaurant, very good food, highly recommended. Piscos to die for. Our waiter was perhaps not that attentive, but overall the ensemble of the staff was fantastic. An experience, and good view on the bay. Book in advance to make sure to find a table

A full flavor taste of Peru in San Francisco

By RLD808 |

This bright and vibrant Peruvian restaurant is full of life and flavor. Whether you sit at the bar area or sit in the main dinning room, you won't be disappointed by this gourmands delight. The selections of Peruvian spirits is great. They have beers, wines, and the hard stuff from Peru. The bartenders whip up amazing drinks with such detail and complexity in amazing speed and accuracy. The menu is seafood heaven of Peruvian preparations, but can be a bit intimidating to decipher. It might be a good idea to study the menu in advance and/or view pictures online to preselect what you plan on eating. The Peruvian ceviches , spelt cebiche are amazing. The fresh seafood preparations dazzle your taste buds with fresh zest, spice and a bit of heat. You just can't get enough. Try a Peruvian beer to go with your meal or wine if you are not a cocktail drinker. They are light yet flavorful as well as compliment the flavors of the food perfectly. Everyone was friendly, but it is rather busy, so you might not feel like you are being attended to. It is a busy place and everything they do is full of detail, so don't expect immediate service. Defiantly will return when visiting San Francisco again and will not hesitate to recommend this place a must try.

Incredible Meal

By Kim M |

Our Uber driver recommended this place. This was simply the best restaurant we have been to in years!! Incredible drinks, appetizers, entrees & the desserts were delicious & so beautiful!! One can tell that the chefs here have perfected their craft. We are a family of foodies & we love trying new restaurants wherever we travel & at home. I highly recommend this place. Their different ceviches were so delicious infused with lots of great flavours. Their brunch & lunch items were incredible. A must on your next visit to San Francisco! This will be our first stop the next time we are in town without a doubt!!

I am here every time when I’m in the Bay Area

Great Lunch, Beautiful View!

By Frank Sories |

My spouse and I have dined at La Mar during previous restaurant weeks and enjoyed our meals. This year was no exception. The service was excellent, and the view is spectacular. The food is delicious. The complimentary taro chips and dip are always a treat. We started with the Cebiche Classico, which was outstanding. The halibut was amazingly sweet and fresh, and the marinade was tangy. The chicken antichuco had a generous portion of both chicken and sweet potato; the former was juicy, the latter soft and creamy. The Arroz con Mariscos had delicious seasonings and fresh seafood. It was a smaller portion than is served a la carte. The shrimp were a little smaller than medium, but quite tasty. The fish was practically nonexistent, which was a minus. The calamari was very fresh and tender, which was a plus. The normal main dish prices are very, very expensive, but, as can be seen from the reviews here, the food is consistently high quality. We recommend La Mar, especially if you are looking for a restaurant on the water.

Explosion of flavors! Great choice in San Francisco

By Vera & Sérgio |

An explosion of flavors, exuberant cuisine! Even for those who don't usually eat seafood, the shrimp croquet I tried and liked! And the Lomo Jump is wonderful! Nigiri vegan also delicious, creamy with Latin touch!

Gooood

By Hrvoje J |

Variety of different food. Taste taste taste. But wines are heavily overpriced. And it was crowded. Realy crowded

Sensational!

By flp8 |

What a gorgeous place. Stunning building. Extremely informative friendly server. Food was just wow! Had halibut tail as a main it was exquisite - cannot fault this place

Ambience + Flavors + Consistency = Winner

By RavisDavis |

This unique restaurant is a “destination” on the Waterfront, easy access from public transportation. Exciting setting and creative, delicious, healthy cuisine. Who knew Peruvian seafood was so scrumptious! Staff is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. I recommend sharing dishes because there are so many flavors to experience! It is family friendly. Go for lunch and sit in the enclosed heated terrace on the waterfront, or sit in the gorgeous interior. There is also a fun bar with dining if you are time constrained.

Very good food and patio dining

By D i |

There again for lunch with a girlfriend again sharing a couple dishes with great patio dining! We love the food and atmosphere. And loves the chips and sauce they give you too. Service was good even knowing most restaurants have had challenges with Covid training either new Chefs or service employees.

A peaceful change of pace

By EdgarCosset |

La Mar is a beautiful restaurant, its Peruvian offerings a welcome respite from the Wharf crab traps and the tourist crammed Ferry Building nearby. I highly recommend it. Divided into three spaces—a rustic happy hour bar, an airy peaceful dining room and a large patio with an unobstructed view of the bay—its overall ambiance is calm and welcoming. I checked out the happy hour pleased at the warm and gracious greeting. The bar was sunny and cheerful. Other guests seemed mostly to be happy couples quietly enjoying themselves and their drinks. Since I had no idea what it was, I ordered a pisco sour ($7). Turns out to be Peruvian brandy. Ditto the prickly pear margarita, which I now know is cactus. Delicious. I do know something about empanadas, however. And the sampler provided the perfect HH snack, a foursome, one each of chicken, beef, mushroom and choclo (corn!). Different dollops of sauce gave a nice color touch to the plate. Service is courteous and hospitable. I would definitely return.

Local reviewer

By Dora L |

We wanted an early dinner and made a reservation for 4 at 5:30. The restaurant was empty when we got there and we asked if we could sit at a table by the window The host who seated us indicated that we could not have the table because it was for 5 and reserved. The entire time we had our meal, no one showed up and there were other tables for five by the window. Upon leaving I mentioned to him that no one sat there and he said they didn’t show up. The entire restaurant was pretty empty . An apology would’ve been nicer Our server was wonderful and service was good. Our lamb shank was a bit cold and while meat fell off the bone, it tasted like bbq sauce over it and not much flavor. When this restaurant first opened it was great but the menu has remained the same and nothing has changed or do I find exciting. The ceviche is wonderful and I would totally recommend it.

Great service, good ceviches

By Viajeroblue |

Went with a large group last night for dinner on the heated patio. Service was really fast and courteous. We ordered set dinner and had a chance to taste a large variety of items. Overall we were all impressed.

Outstanding flavors and exemplary service

By Itinerant_Foodies |

Outstanding flavors, starting with the chips and sauce and continuing through the “experience” menu which allowed us to taste many of the different dishes using smaller portions. Flavor combinations are delicious and extremely well balanced. Service was also outstanding. Servers and others work together to make sure that you’re always taken care of. The service is friendly and many servers seemed to be genuinely happy to be there and to share a love of the food.

A Wonderful Find

By MNnortherner |

When the oyster bar we wanted to have a late lunch at was closed, we wandered a little further down the waterfront and found La Mar. Our waiter made some excellent recommendations so we could sample several different favorites including a salmon sashimi-style dish, an octopus with arugula, and a shrimp with stir fried rice. The flavors were fresh while still complex, and the cucumber sparkling wine cocktail was a perfect companion. It is not an inexpensive option but the excellent quality left no regrets. Highly recommend.

Foodgasm!

By ReginiceC |

Exceptional service and the food...let’s just say foodgasm! Christian was the lead host for a group of about 25 that my company was hosting. He timed the welcome cocktails just right and tended to the needs of the party. Christian and crew made everything run smoothly. This restaurant is great for corporate events! The cocktails were yum! Pisco sours were on point, but the El Cholitos(jalapeño cocktail) were my favorite and complimented the jalapeño black mint dip very well. I’m actually craving the dip just writing about it.

Excellent all around!

By Lauren M |

We ate dinner here with friends while only in town for one night, and would absolutely do it all over again! Enjoyed the modern atmosphere, friendly staff with excellent recommendations, and great food! We let our waiter order for the table and were very satisfied.

Great Restaurant Week Peruvian Meal!

By Frank Sories |

This is the third SF Restaurant Week that my spouse and I have eaten lunch at La Mar. the $25.00 price tag was more than reasonable, considering that their regular prices can be quite high. The location on the waterfront is idyllic. Tables were well-spaced for social distancing, and the staff was very conscientious in adopting COVID-19 precautionary practices. Service was pleasant and helpful as always. The facility itself is quite lovely, and the entire La Mar experience is an enjoyable one. The food is top-notch. We started the meal with complimentary taro chips and a delicious salsa. We both ordered the La Mar Sampler as a first course; The combination included a tasty causa limeña as well as an exceptional cebiche and nigiri. All of the raw fish was scrupulously fresh; overall it was a stellar appetizer. For our second courses we had the Lomo Saltado, a dish the features beef tenderloin, and Arroz con Mariscos, which contained halibut, squid, and shrimp. Their rice dishes are invariably superb. We recommend La Mar without reservation. You will definitely enjoy your meal there.

Peruvian dining experience by the pier

By anggingyin |

This is one of my go-to restaurants in San Francisco. The quality of food and dining experience is amazing, ask for a table by the pier and it is a wonderful dining experience.

Great place and atmosphere

By mdr9 |

Loved our meal here and it had a great atmosphere right on the water. Food and service was very good. Would go back again and try different items. Our waiter made very good wine suggestions for our meal as well. Fun place.

It was okay...

By Kath_Lau |

I went there with a couple of friends for lunch. My friend from SF recommended it as a restaurant with a great setting. La Mar is on the pier so the view on the terrace is pretty interesting you can see some of the ferries. Inside the sound is very trapped so it's very noisy and difficult to talk. We changed our table to an outside one which was much better. They served us some cassava chips which were very salty. The salsa dip was quite nice. We had mixed ceviche. There were three different types and they were very good. The empanadas were also yummy. We ordered jalea which is a plate of deep fried seafood. In the UK we can it sea rubbish. It was a mistake. They had very little taste as they were so fried. The overall experience was okay. The staff were nice and polite. I'm not sure I would recommend it to anyone though not would I go there again.

Delicious food, great for groups, but can be noisy.

By Maria D |

If you are in the mood for delicious food and drink, most of it family style, then this is the place for you. The ceviches are absolutely delicious and so fresh. There are some signature Peruvian dishes that were recommended by our server and we absolutely loved the Limo Saltado. Everyone enjoyed a Pisco sour and they had an extensive list. This is great for groups because they have large tables. It can be quite noisy especially on Friday and Saturday nights. If your not careful, the bill can be pricey, it is very easy to over order because there are so many appealing dishes.

Give your tastebuds a feast at this Peruvian gem restaurant

By BERWOLF |

Wonderful place for dinner: we Reserved a table outside near the water; great views, wonderful service. Highly recommended dishes: ceviche Classico, empanada sampler, lomo saltado, grilled halibut as starters and entrees to share. We also shared the tres leches, chocolate pie and the passion fruit desert; all delicious! Don’t forget to try the cocktails

Superb dishes elegantly served

By kattullus |

Very tasty dishes all served on individual finely designed plates. We started with the classic Pisco sour drink. Very popular so reservation is essential. Nice staff!

Good food, pathetic service

By Helmut |

I so wanted to give La Mar 5/5 points, however, service was just a joke. Slow, forgetful, not attentive. Not even friendly. Having said that, the food was delicious: The octopus perfectly seasoned and the ceviche nice and spicy. The tres leches not too sweet, which is a huge plus. I might come back for the food and hope service will be better then. In any case, it does not come close to the original in Lima tho.

A Unique Experience

By ejzk |

This is a very pricey place for a meal. If you want an elegant dining experience with "new" type of food, this is for you. The menu wasn't very clear to those of us without Peruvian background/experience. If you are daring in your dining and have deep pockets, go for it! Definitely would not take children there.

Meet expectations

By Holiday99 |

Huge restaurant, nicely decorated, trendy feel. There is an large outside covered seating area by the sea. Staff was friendly and efficient. Food was good.

Amazing

By EJG4 |

Truly memorable meal for larger group of friends. Great view right on the water. Outstanding fresh seafood. Be careful not to over order. Waiter talked us into getting too much food but everything was amazing.

Cebiche at it’s best!

By Review_time_me |

Believe me: cebiche and tiradito as a starter, then repeat for main course and dessert.... Is the best thing on the menu and tastes very much like in Peru. Enjoy!

Lovely place great food!

By NChopra55 |

We have been to La Mar on number of occasions but this visit the food was outstanding. Service was great. The ceviche was great but the tuna in passion fruit sauce and the halibut were superb. .

Quality, but the $$$ prices!

By TravelSeeBee |

Food certainly nice - well prepared and well sourced. Perhaps a limited choice in the vegetarian/vegan area. Stellar service. In line with the times, outrageous prices on all; not surprising but certainly limiting.

A Taste of Peru on the Bay

By Lorraine W |

Attentive service shines along with so many good choices from cerviches to grilled halibut as an entree. Save room for the tres leches cake that was the best I have ever had. If you go before sunset, you have wonderful water views. It gets crowded so reservations are a must.

Not going back

By ImaMY |

In SF you pay either for a view/entertainment or food. This restaurant has a nice view, we were seated by the clear plastic wall with heaters above, to warm our heads, and a strong draft from the "wall". Mixed feeling about the service. The drinks came fast, but the sparkling water we ordered tasted flat. We decided not to bother as we all have alcoholic drinks also. The several waiters were frequently at the tables. I asked, if they can bring all appetizers, after that all entrees, was told NO, they will bring food as it comes. This is why they serve family style. So the four of us got 2 appetizers with 1 entree. With different diets we couldn't share, so some of use were eating while some of us waited. And waited. And waited. With so many restaurants in SF I would not go back. The food was OK to good, nothing memorable.

Highly recommended

By Adriana H |

Delicious food, Peruvian haute cuisine dishes. The place is unbeatable. Good service. Good selection of wines. Beautifully expensive but the place deserves it and it is also what this beautiful city of San Francisco costs.

The BEST restaurant and Peruvian food in the City!

By PaseoSal |

If you find yourself in San Francisco, do yourself a favor and have lunch or dinner here. This is hands down one of thee best restaurants in The City. The Peruvian food is outstanding and earns its award winning flavors and cooked to perfection. The service is equally top notch. Ask to speak with Gina who runs the back of the house. Lunch has lovely views as does evening. There are heat lamps. Do not pass up their ceviche tasting menu. Out of this world as is their Causa and Lomo Saltado. Truly a one of a kind experience.

Not worthy for the price

By angy |

Nice place but not worthy for the price: I ordered a mix ceviche ( the fish was good but shrimps and calamari were under the average ) and I took a seafood currasco ( about 40$ for a small piece of a very cheap type of fish ). My opinion is that when you pay double for a plate , the quality is supposed to be double as well . It ‘s not what I experienced and as fan of the Peruvian cuisine I am quite disappointed with this restaurant .

Food was excellent, rest of the experience was just okay

By Bruce C |

The food was fantastic, and it was priced at a reasonable level. But service was average at best, ambiance was nothing great - we felt like they were herding people in and out. It was sort of disappointing. I guess if you go there knowing that, then you'll really enjoy it as the food is so good.

Amazing as always

By Gi M. |

We love LaMar. We just went back for restaurant week and it did not disappoint. Always great food and drinks. The Lomo Saltado was perfect.

Rushing to get you out again

By Marc |

Greetings weren’t in place at all. We got a quick explanation about the menu. We ordered 4 different dishes, which we specifically asked to be served separately. That didn’t happen. Time between starters and main course was 3 minutes. All so we’d be out of the restaurant within the hour. Far from a pleasant experience, never again. Food was decent but overpriced.

Fun with a group

By Bucky1836 |

This is an energetic, loud place at dinner time. Lots of groups, including ours, trying to be heard, all in good spirits. The food is fun to split, especially the empanada sampler and the anticucho sampler. Those who had one of the cebiches were not impressed with them. There's a good selection of wine and spirits, but they are inconsistently in stock. Service was attentive and informative, but not intrusive.

Fantastic Peruvian Meal

By Harvey C |

We toured the hot menu plus the potato cold dish. It was out of this world. We had the beef croquettas, the potato choice, a skewer and fish. Wow. Just awesome. We ate at an affiliate in Madrid. We need to try harder to seek these out. The docs also was very nice and on the wharf and easily accessible. We shall return and hit other locations!!!!!

Awesome

By meckioi |

I took clients to La Mar for dinner. First time visitors. Even though my booking was for five they accommodated is when six arrived. Service was very knowledgeable. Only strange thing was that pretty much every thing on the menus was either her or the chefs favorite. We shared two starter platters and two main dishes and it was plenty for five. Food sharing is actively encouraged, which is nice and provides ability to taste it all. The vegetarian option was also excellent. All dishes were not only delicious but also beautiful to look at. Best, no one rushed us to finish in time for a second seating. So we could have an extended conversation. Will definitely come again when back in SFO.

Still A Favorite!

By jennygirl57 |

We have visited La Mar every time we come to San Francisco. Love the pretty old building, the friendly staff, the delicious cocktails, and the wonderful food. This time, we were happy to have our son and daughter in law join us, and they loved it, too! We enjoyed tiradito nikkei, coliflor encebichado, ceviche clasico, empanada tasting, causa limena, anticucho de pulpo, anticucho de corazon. Everything so well prepared as always. We shared a dessert at the end, tres leches cake. Yummy! We love La Mar and always visit when we are in the Bay Area.

Lively airy , great Peruvian twists

By andyww2018 |

A big open dining room with lovely large windows and a deck overlooking the bay is buzzing but not noisy . The open kitchen adds to the vibe . Octopus and Fish ‘ skewers we’re both great . The food was skewer grilled but then served on imaginative bases ( fried fava beans for one a quinoa ‘mash ‘ for the other and with complementary rich sauces . Decent value for a great location , good friendly staff

Good food, bad service and wait

By johnyboyd |

La Mar has quite a lot going for it - prime location, ambiance by the bay, great view, good food. We've had great experiences during our visits up to an year back. Sad to say, its gone downhill the past year. We had reservations for a weekend dinner. Still had to wait at the lobby for over 30 minutes. Once seated, the waiter took another 15 minutes to get to us, and then another 30 minutes to bring our ordered bottle of wine. Food quite good, but unsatisfactory service. Especially given the $$$

Delicious ceviche

By kb4003 |

We booked for this restaurant based upon reviews being fans of ceviche. It's a huge restaurant but we enjoyed the food a lot. We tried a number of ceviche and fresh fish. Very good but not cheap.

Nice Pre Fix Menu and Bar

By MatSci94577 |

Had a great tasting menu at La Mar (ordered a set menu). We had great seafood and beef dishes. Not for everyone, since some folks do not like raw fish. Cocktails and service was superb. The place was packed with a vibrant crowd on a Thursday night at 8PM. Nice bar too.

Delicious food, top location

By Tini1608 |

The restaurant is next to the Port of San Francisco, directly at seaside. It was very busy the day we visited, reservation was neccesary. Staff was friendly, service was fast (quite a bit too fast, leaving hardly any time between the courses). Cebiche, empanadas, negiri as starters - delicious! Main was the catch of the day (halibutt), also nice! Price high as usual in SF.

Great food with a Peruvian twist

By Jon M |

What better place to have dinner in SF overlooking the water when it’s 30 degrees (centigrade!!) Fantastic food, not cheap but you won’t need much. We went the Classico which was cold, chunks of white fish, with some veggies. Another dish was quinoa with beautiful seafood. A great IPA blood orange beer and a funky El Cholito cocktail

Great lunch!

By JDB68 |

My wife had been here several years ago and enjoyed the experience. So when we saw that they were participating in SF Restaurant Week we made reservations to give it another try. The menu is loaded with interesting sounding options, but we stuck with the restaurant week menu: Dungeness crab cakes and grilled salmon for my wife, Oxtail croquettes and Lomo Saltado (beef tenderloin in oyster sauce) for me Both meals were very good While we are not big fans of Ceviche they offer a wide variety of choices, which looked good to me. Service was a bit slow, but I think we arrived shortly after opening and they were concentrating on getting folks seated versus taking orders. We will go back again - we were able to sit in the outside area in January - they do have space heaters - This is a fairly large place, with most of the seating inside.

Excellent dinner festivities

By Ray Q |

With room to accommodate a date night or a big party celebration, this place is a fun find just north of the Ferry Building. The focus of the menu is obviously everything seafood, but there are some vegetarian surprises that diversify the selection. Solid wine list and refreshing cocktails. Service is warm and attentive.

There are better restaurants in SF

By Laura H |

We’ve come here every year (we don’t live in the area) since they reopened after COVID. As it’s become more popular, the food and the service has gone downhill. The service isn’t personal, it’s very transactional. The food used to be exceptional and for whatever reason, it’s not anymore; it’s good, but doesn’t stand out from other SF higher end restaurants. It’s also very loud in the restaurant (no sound buffers); previously we’ve sat on the patio where it’s easier to hold a conversation. I can’t say we’ll be in a rush to come back after this last experience.

Great food and service, poor experience

By Alex |

This restaurant has fantastic food, it is not cheap but it earns its stars. The problem is that whilst location is great, management are happy to sit over 100 people in one go with poor facilities. How can customer be expected to wait over 20 minutes to use a bathroom? Only two for so many people! It is ridiculous, and it smacks of “as long as we get your money we don’t care.” I saw pregnant ladies waiting, elderly gentlemen, people on wheelchairs, families with children having to wait forever. How can you expect people to enjoy the great food of the experience of basic services are awful? The excuse of “is an old building” wears thin!! You should not be open for business if you lack minimum facilities to provide basic hygiene such as toilets. You have the money to afford showing your clients that you care.

Disappointed

By Jeanette Jane |

I had been dreaming of dining at La Mar for sometime and the stars finally aligned this past weekend, as I invited a few girlfriends to have our Friday night dinner there. The evening started off delightful, as the restaurant was stylish and modern, well suited for the Embarcadero. The hosts and bussers were also lovely and prompt. However, the atmosphere dramatically went downhill as soon as we spoke to our waiter because he came off as impatient and annoyed. He didn't allow us to order drinks, which we were about to put in, because he scurried off. He would do that constantly throughout the meal-- as soon as he saw us start to ponder, he would leave. We would have appreciated suggestions instead of having him leave and be annoyed. He also kept asking to remove our plates, when we were clearly still enjoying the dishes and attempted to pick up the check a couple of times, when we were not ready to pay. Ultimately, we tried a few ceviches: the mixto, California and classico. All were extremely fresh and each with special taste from the other. We also tried the chicken empanadas and las roquitas, which were delicious! Although, the best part of the meal was the chocolate mousse! It had strong cocoa and beautiful berry notes, very reminiscent of Peru itself. The food was a delight, yet I would not recommend la Mar because of the service received that night. I am disappointed and embarrassed, because I recommended this place so strongly to my friends and I felt as if I let them down.

Memorable experience!

By RayR |

La Mar has a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. The service is friendly and helpful and the food is simply outstanding. We tried a number of dishes and each was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Their tuna taquitos were a particular highlight – fresh and light with a great citrusy bite. Their cocktails were also creative and well executed. Will definitely return next time I'm in San Francisco.

What a great place to eat!

What a great place to eat! Ordered the pulpo and it was fantastic, superb flavours and very well prepared. Personnel was friendly and swift.

Special Occasion Dinner Hits and Misses

By Miss P |

It was my husband’s birthday and he was craving seafood. He suggested La Mar, so here we are. The restaurant had great ambience, which made for a strong first impression. Our server let us know the food is served tapas style, so we went with the Bandeja Cebichera. It is a sampler platter with a little bit of everything. At $129, the price felt fair for the variety we got. Everything tasted delicious. The seafood had a just out of the ocean freshness, which was surprising since fish is not usually delivered on Sundays. Whatever they did to preserve that freshness really worked. I give this dish a 5/5 In addition to the sampler, my husband suggested we order another ceviche. The waiter recommended the Cebiche Nikkei which was made with ahi tuna. It has a great balance of sweet and tangy flavor. I actually liked this one more than the ceviche in the sampler. 5/5 He also wanted to try the octopus, so we ordered the Pulpo. It was just okay. Not bad, but not great. However it was beautifully presented. At $36, I probably would not order it again. 3/5 Another birthday boy request was to try the empanada sampler, which came with one each of beef, chicken, mushroom, and corn. I thought the pastry was a bit too dry and toasty, but the flavors were all really good. My husband actually forgot he had it, so I guess it was not all that memorable. At thirty four dollars, I felt the price was a bit high for what we got, but our guests really enjoyed it. 4/5 By this point, most of us were getting full, but I thought carnivores (men) would appreciate some red meat, we ordered the Lomo Saltado. This dish reminded me of a Chinese dish, the steak cube on sizzling platter. I only had one bite just to get a taste. It was nice and flavorful, but at $46, I thought it was way overpriced (you can get this same dish at a Chinese restaurant and cost less than 1/2 of this price. 3/5 For dessert, we ordered something for the birthday candle moment. The birthday boy wanted something raspberry, so we got the Choco Maracuya. I am not big on sweets, but our guests said it had a nice tart balance and was not too sugary. They really enjoyed it, so I am happy to give it a 5/5 The restaurant also brought out a Dulce de Leche cake for the birthday boy. I personally liked this one more because of how moist it was. Surprisingly, my guests did not feel the same way as they thought it was a little too sweet. With the mixed reactions at the table, I am taking a point off. 4/5 Overall, I think there were serval hits and a couple of misses on the food. Service wise, I felt the waiter likes to push more expensive dishes, which did not appreciate. He didn’t tell us we get a free desert, so we ordered one. In additional, we asked for more chips that were free when we sat down, and later realized it was $8. Overall rating Food: 4 out of 5 Ambience: 5 out of 5 Service: 3.5 out of 5 Overall: 3.5 out of 5 (round up to 4)

Perfection for a special summer afternoon lunch

By betsypeck1 |

This is an absolutely delightful location for a family get-together. I was recently in town visiting with my son, daughter-in-law and 1 year -old granddaughter, and was hoping to end my visit with a really memorable meal, and this spot certainly fit the bill! The food was served quickly, plated artistically, and every bite was superb. The covered outdoor seating was gorgeous on an early summer afternoon. The cocktails were unique and tasty, while the taro chips provided an unexpected and welcome departure from the more usual tortilla chips. The staff, especially our waitperson Daniel, was attentive and non-intrusive, including helping provide a highchair and moving it from place to place. I could not recommend it more highly and look forward to a return visit!

Food is great, service drags it down

By jeandert |

I wanted to have some quick lunch before a long haul flight out of sfo so i thought i try this one. Even though the restaurant was not even half full the maitre d' made it seem like there was no space. no smile. when i sat down at a table i was quick with ordering and i told the waitress that i only had 1 hour to spend. The food came promptly and was very very good. Unfortunately the Service staff seems to be trained to come off as snobbish and arrogant. This will not help the ratings of this place in the future. What annoys me is when i get a "second row table" instead of first row because there might be a more important person showing up. Clearly, they had better vacant tables throughout my stay and just wanted to hold them for some imaginary VIP. Thats usually the point where i decide not to come back.

Excellent food in a nice setting

By Pieter H. & Shauni V.H. |

Nice place, with possibility to sit outside in a heated section behind the building. Friendly staff walked us through the menu. The idea is that you share different dishes. We opted for empanadas and a veggie dish. Both were of high quality. Even though we only selected starters, we were already fulfilled when we finished these dishes. We ordered some sorbet and called it a night. Prices are on the high side, but not spectacular for the SF pier area.

Can’t even describe the food - just go!

By Leighanne M |

La Mar was recommended to us by Dean @ the Kimpton Alton, and while we wanted to try a new restaurant every day, we ended up going here twice and wanted to go more! The food and drinks are absolutely amazing. Best scallops we ever had (and we live on the West Coast of BC)! I am still craving the complimentary taro chips and dip! The atmosphere is truly alive and is enjoyed by both locals and travellers - you really do need to eat here!

The best of san francisco

By JimmyLVB |

I am Peruvian, and since I have never been to a Peruvian restaurant outside of Peru, I was totally satisfied with the quality and I would say without sinning better than many places in Lima, everything was very good, that Californian cause was a delight, that rice with seafood was sublime, the chicha of 10, the octopus at its best, I fell in love with their food

Trendy local and modern Peruvian cuisine good!!

By Navigator44829229621 |

During our na stay in San Francisco We had dinner there one evening special dishes and very good trendy young and very nice location on the Bay of the Pier The only drawback is the rather high prices!

Great experience

By lgraham015 |

First experience of Peruvian food, can't wait to try more. The ceviche was so fresh and tasty and empanadas were the best I've ever had. Pisco sour cocktail was also delicious.

Perfect evening

By Leonardo B |

We had an amazing experience! Everything we ordered was “an experience”, from the ceviches to the “Lomo Saltado”, which is one of the best I’ve ever had (including in Peru). Service was great and the views from the back patio fantastic.

Delicious fast casual on Waterfront

By Julie S |

Delicious fast casual on San Francisco’s waterfront. Fun, spicy food. Try it all as each dish is better than the next.

Loved this place!

By Puddin65 |

Really, really delicious food, with great service and wonderful views! Could not fault any aspect of this restaurant - the menu was awesome in that it allowed you to order sampler plates or craft your own combination of dishes. We had a special sampler plate (see photo), which was absolutely delicious. We followed it with the fried rock shrimp (also photo), both of which were amazing. Between the three of us, it was more than enough. And we walked away feeling satisfied, but not overfilled. Highly recommend if you’re a fan of ceviche and seafood. Yum!!!

Great cebiche. Cooked food not so much.

By Bruce S |

I have been to La Mar numerous times over the years and was never disappointed until this visit. The Cebiche was excellent as usual but we also ordered grilled octopus and steak, and both were over cooked and tough. Some of the octopus was so tough it was inedible. Whomever they have on the grill is a little overzealous.

Great view

By mi v |

Great restaurant in bay area. I found this restaurant on envibe and decided to visit it, and I didn't regret! The food was incredible! And the view is amazing. I highly recommend this place!

Still excellent. Even after 10 years!

By MattKeyzer |

We returned to the La Mar after about 10 years. It is still our favorite place to eat cebiche. Excellent food, nice location.

Find somewhere else

By Scott |

This review is downgraded from my previous visit. Food is good but service is inconsistent. I don't mind paying $120 for a solo dining experience. But it's got to be fantastic. Anything less than fantastic is deplorable. The server managed to get the food out reasonably fast, although the main dish was lukewarm. he obviously left it waiting on the counter while I was eating the appetizers. Then he managed to completely screw up at the simplest part of the dining experience. 24 minutes before it landed on my table, I ordered a second diet Coke. the food was gone. the plates were gone. the table was clear, then my diet coke showed up. And guess what, I was charged for that second diet Coke. I paid roughly $4 for about 7 oz of diet Coke. In the end, I didn't actually end up paying to the diet coke, because I deducted it from his tip.

Bad service, not pro customer, charge a lot, horrible service and food, extra expensive we paid $1,200 and disappointed

By GLICHY R |

Extremely expensive, the service horrible, the food bad, we spent $1,200 wait hours for the food for the drinks, the restrooms a mess! Super dirty never visit this place again!!!

Great Food

Superb Peruvian restaurant. The ceviche options were amazing and our waiter was very attentive and made sure we had a perfect evening.

Clean, social distancing, and the food is as good as ever

By Laurene M |

We ate outdoors with shade on a very hot day. The tables were spread apart, and the emphasis was on cleanliness with antiseptic available here and there, and single use menus. We enjoyed the variety of empanadas, and the ahi tuna ceviche with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Tried Something New and Worth It!

By PamKFam |

Booked a reservation during SF Restaurant Week to try something new and boy was it a great idea. The food, service and setting were excellent. The menu is uniquely Peruvian with lots of seafood and traditional meat and potato dishes. Beautiful and right on the water!

Full and fantastically good!

By aka130813 |

Full of people on a Saturday night in March. We ate their nigiri tasting and their tortellinis. Everything was very good! Tasted excellent. Drank another glass of wine. The staff were friendly, attentive and gave us full attention even though we "only" ate each starter.

Nice location , pretty ok food

Obviously the location is great, sadly the food is not necessarily on par with this one. So the choice Is yours, the mood will be great but your plate probably less

We Left a Little Hungry

By Joanne M |

This is one of the few restaurants in the area that was not touristy. We went at night, so missed the view. However, the ambiance and service were spot on. Everything we ordered was delicious. However, We spent over $50 per person for what was essentially appetizers + two Coronas and and iced tea. Earlier in the week, we dined at Perbacco for the same amount of money and left fully satiated.

Very nice restaurant with excellent food

By pd1357 |

We were very spontaneously in San Francisco looking for a nice place for a late dinner. Luckily we could get a table as it was already quite late (after 9 pm). The Food was just great and very tasty. The wine menu offers a huge variety of wines from all over the world. Some more information would be useful for wine lovers. Service was fast and attentive. Unfortunately it was heavily raining that night so we could only sit inside. However it leaves one more good reason to come back next time.

Excellent food always

By Minasantaclara |

I have been coming here for years. Food never disappoints, especially their daily specials. The cocktails are also very good, definitely worth a try. I always brought my own wines but notice that they also have good but limited wine list. I recommend all the things on the menu and outdoor seating.

Delicious and interesting flavors, fresh fish, innovative combinations. Superb drinks. On the bay!

By SkiEmpress |

Delicious and interesting food. Good variety of fresh seafood, prepared several ways. A variety of sauces is offered as our accompaniments to fish dishes. Fantastic fresh taro chips with a green dipping sauce that is dynamite. Delicious empanadas. We tried the Pisco Sours (with 1 made with passion fruit juice instead of lime. Everyone raved. Our party of 8 enjoyed celebrating 2 birthdays. If you haven’t tried Peruvian cuisine please do, here at La Mar.

Flavor and Ambiance!

By Ry Ry |

One of my favorite meals, easily in the top 10. Plus add the ambiance of being on the San Francisco Embarcadero. Even during COVID restrictions, we were able to get a table the day after Thanksgiving. We will return! The food is beyond remarkable; we had the Tiradito Nikkei (my favorite), Tiradito Verde (my girlfriend's favorite), the Nikkei Cebiche, Churrasco de pescado, topped off with a couple of Black Angel cocktails! What a wonderful evening. Then walk the city nights. Anyone who is looking for flavor needs to visit this restaurant.

Excellent food and view

By CEO_traveler |

The menu has great choices, the food is tasty and made with fresh ingredients. I have been 3 times at this place last year the only not-so-good surprise of my last night visit is that they have increased their price by at least 15%. Still highly recommend.

Outstanding.

By James W |

Totally different experience of creative flavored dishes. From appetizers, mains and don’t forget dessert. We had 5 appetizers, 2 mains and 2 desserts. Each was uniquely diverse in flavors, ingredients and textures. I don’t know the head chef, but these dishes are among the best I’ve ever had…..anywhere in North America or Europe. Our server Christopher was awesome as well. We had a tremendous experience, hope you do as well Jim

Tasty!

By RiyadhI_doc |

Very good experience in San Francisco. The ambiance is great, with a huge terrace facing the bay. The place is gigantic, I believe there would be no problem to find a table even without reservations. However, it was crowded the night we visited. The food is delicious, with several flavors combined to perfection. Peruvian drinks like pisco sour and cholito were sweet and dangerous... doesn’t taste like alcohol but certainly feels like it after a couple of shots. Overall the place is very loud (not for a romantic dinner for sure) but the food is tasty and if you are in the mood for party, this might be the place for you.

Peruvian cuisine at its best

By Quest94814 |

We are very impressed with the delicious Peruvian food we enjoyed last night at La Mar SF, we were not disappointed….all the dishes were beautiful presented and full of flavour. The food fusion worked out perfectly. Very impressed. At the same time we received excellent service from Chris and the rest of the team, making the night a very memorable one. Well done once again.

Worth a try but I expected better tasting food

By Tina Montinola |

Never tried peruvian food before so was looking forward to trying this place when my cousin invited us. It’s at the embarcadero area. Its huge, There is a bar area, the a big indoor seating area and a lovely outdoor seating area with a nice view. They served Plantain chips with this green dip which I liked. Was Good, now for the food, We got the following: Empanada Tasting (Mushroom. Choclo, Chicken, and Beef) Cebiche Tasting – selection of cebiches: Clásico, Mixto and Nikkei Roquitas - Rock shrimp wrapped with crispy squid ink tempura and tartare chifa sauce Cebiche Clasico -Sushi grade local halibut in classic leche de tigre Pollo - Chicken, sweet potato, chalaca and huacatay cream To be honest, it was ok, nothing spectacular for the price you pay. Interesting taste I guess but the food lacked flavor, there was no kick to it. Its ok to try it out, but its not a place you will keep coming back too. It also gets pretty full. The service, again considering the price you pay for the dishes, is not to great, they take long to get back to you. Worth a try though 😊

Excellent for business dinner

By YL Shanghai |

The restaurant is at the water side. Great environment for business dinner although the tables were a bit close to each other. Food was excellent and unique. The crab shown in the picture deserved the highest mark. Price was steep at $200/person. Noise level was not low although the vibe was very happy. Good place for entertaining business guests but might not be the best for families.

Not The best, but really good

By engcmuller |

For my surprise, my friends recommended a Peruvian restaurant in SanFran. It’s a great place but not close to the best Peruvian restaurants I’ve been...the best plate I tried it was the churrasco and not the ceviche!!!

Great food, small portions

By Anna |

Suggested by a local friend, La mar is a very good restaurant. Friendly Service and great food. Perhaps the portions could have been a little more abundant. Overall excellent.

Excellent but expensive restaurant

By packedandready2go |

The food was not only delicious but many of the dishes are not typically available at Peruvian restaurants. The quinoa salad was top rate. Our favorite entree was the fried swordfish with onions, chickpeas, etc. The service was good. The restaurant is very expensive. The servings are very large so a good way to cut down the cost is to share a salad and a main with someone else.

Fusion here means expensive, inauthentic and tasteless

By drgordona |

Setting is wonderful, by the bay. Service is relatively attentive. But the food is expensive, scant and relatively tasteless. The ceviche was a scant portion, especially for $18 (!). The antichucho de corazon was too thick and thus undercooked. Tender but relatively tasteless, with small cubes of sweet potato (instead of a slice) and a few kernels of corn. No mamacita on a street corner in Arequipa would dare serve this plate. The lucuma ice cream was pale and, again, tasteless. And the solid dregs from the wine bottle sat in my wine glass. Go here if you're at Pier 39 and you want Peruvian foodt; otherwise, search out any one of the smaller, more authentic restaurants in SF. There's no reason to help pay the surely exorbitant rent for a bayside space when the chain-restaurant food is so poor.

Good location, beautiful food presentation but lack flavors, and expensive.

By ZenProsperity (Tam) |

Just tried to celebrate my wife's birthday here and was very disappointed. We spent over $350+ for 3 people for just 3 cocktails, 2 appetizers and 2 mains to share. While the food presentation was beautiful, the flavors were lacking and did not represent any value. No small gestures to celebrate the birthday (eg. small piece of dessert or glass of sparkling wine) besides lip service. The restaurant was busy due to tourists from Labor Day long weekend. We have spent similar amount of money with much better experience at nearby restaurants like Epic Steak, Waterfront, Water Bar and Boulevard.

Leave the world at the door and enjoy the moment

By FVStrona |

The perfect balance of food, people and atmosphere. From celebrations of your choice to date nights. With its high ceilings, huge window and view of the water. Leave the “rush” and “go go go” at home and settle in to enjoy the moment. Bring your appetite and be ready to go “family style” and explore the variety of flavors that await. Be ready for a strong focus on fresh seafood, vegetables and a well curated selection of claw and hoof options for those so prefer land based proteins. The staff are a great resource for recommendations on amounts of food and flavors. Well suited for all or most dietary needs and wants.

Good representation of Peruvian cuisine

By Gabriel H |

This is a busy, popular restaurant in the Embarcadero area. We visited around lunchtime and were fortunate to get a table without reservations. However, within a few minutes the place was packed. Our server was good and attentive, but quite busy, what with the place being full. The menu lists a number of Peruvian classics, which are well prepared and nicely presented. Go for the Ceviches: they originate from Peru and this place makes them like the original dish. The anticuchos are also delicious and of course, every fish listed on the menu is a good choice. While the wine list is good, it focuses on local wines, and to my surprise, there was not a single Peruvian wine listed. Actually Peru is producing nice wines, especially reds. The desserts were lovely, dramatically presented. Try the Tres Leches (Peruvian style) and the Suspiro Loco, a classic from Lima.

Iconic Peruvian restaurant on the pier in San Francisco.

By Shib Bhowmik |

The only thing that I regret is that it took me so long to visit this iconic Peruvian restaurant in San Francisco. It’s important to make a reservation well in advance. On a week day at 12.30 pm the restaurant was completely full- thankfully I made prior reservation. We ordered Anticucho de pulpo ( grilled Spanish octopus….) , jalea (Mar) and Mixto ( chebiches). All the dishes were simply awesome but the anticucho de pulpo was simply out of this world. Ingredients were super fresh and food was fantastic to taste. For drinks we tried prickly pear margarita. They were so good that we repeated them and thought wine we could always drink on another occasion 😀. If weather permits please ask for a table outside on the pier. The view is so nice. The service was professional and attentive as one can expect from such an icon restaurant. If you have never visited this restaurant then surely you are missing excellent Peruvian food…..

Had an amazing time celebrating my birthday 🎂

By maripposa |

La Mar restaurant is very nice , great location by the sea and fisherman’s wharf, food really good, but a little bit pricey. Understand location and ambiance takes in consideration to set up prices, but honestly way too expensive. One thing didn’t like is that servers remove your plates too quick, it’s like they are looking when it’s your last bite to remove your plate ;(. Little uncomfortable. My son was still eating his food when waitress removed the sauce , which was really good.....anyhow ....not sure if I’m coming back
