Great Szechuan Food

By Around the world with Bri |

This place had great food, the Szechuan chicken and fried potstickers were great. However, it was a little hard to find, it was all the way in the back of the shopping center. Overall, great place that I would definitely come back to again.

Wonderful Tastes

By michael p |

This restaurant features Asian food that has that extra something that makes you really enjoy your meal. it calls yourself an Asian Bistro and lives up to that image with great mix and match dishes. Tell your waitress what you like and how you like it and she willl suggest dishes that will live up to your wishes. Take your time and enjoy the ambience of this small restaurant.

Very Popular Place but Not My Favorite

By GPBurdell67 |

My first visit to a Taiwanese restaurant has convinced me that I don't really like Taiwanese dishes. Others in our party might disagree, but nobody was real happy about our experience. Part of the problem is that we ordered off the menu, when probably 80% of their patrons went to the buffet. I checked out the buffet and didn't like what I saw, but there were a lot of choices. I settled for a scallion pancake (just fair -- Indian versions are much better) and hot and sour soup (the soup was very good). Other dishes like their pork noodle soup were bland and/or very greasy. That may be typical but I wasn't impressed. Service was OK, except for my soup, which never arrived until I had to make a special trip to search out our server and remind her. Finally, prices are not cheap.

Vary good

Had family dinner during christmas break. Overall, the food there is very good, however, a little americanized. The service is great. Will certain consider to visit again when visit the area in the future.

Great variety

By Kira v |

We ate family style and left the selection of the dishes to the discretion of the hostess. She gave an amazing variety of dishes that satisfied everyone, vegetarians included. Highly recommend for amazing Chinese cuisine.

New favorite Chinese restaurant

By sporeman |

This is our new favorite Chinese restaurant in Atlanta. Great authentic food. We had the Szechuan fish fillet (Cod), Salt & pepper calamari, and beef with bitter melon in black bean sauce. The seafood was fresh. The waitresses were very friendly, knowledgable, and helpful with the food recommendations.

SO happy we found La Mei Zi

By Dave B |

We have been looking for a Chinese/ Taiwanese restaurant that is fresh and tasty. We found it! The service was excellent, they would not let us order too much! We thought we would need more but she was right. We had the salt/pepper fish, snow pea leaves, shrimp and calamari. Nothing was overcooked. They were very helpful. This will be our new "go-to" place!

One of my favorite lunch spots...

By sidsid69 |

I have been coming here about once per week for awhile now... The service is always great, and their food is unique and bursting with flavor. They have some great lunch specials, and the portion sizes are huge.

Friendly adventure

By Barry B |

This restaurant is in an Asian strip mall and towards the back on the left. Not that hard to find but not obvious from the street. Like most restaurants on Buford Hwy, not much to see from the outside or inside. But it is clean and bigger than most places in this strip mall. Plenty of parking. We came on a Sunday night and had no problem getting a table. In fact there was only one other group in the restaurant. The waitress guided us through our decisions because the menu was rather large. I chose the four mushroom special and Scallion pancake as an appetizer. My friends had Shrimp dish and a fried pork chop dish, they shared a chicken dumpling appetizer. Plenty of vegetarian options. The appetizers came out and were very good, decent scallion pancake and my friends really enjoyed the dumpling with the dipping sauce. My mushroom entree was very tasty, it was served with rice. I asked for some hot sauce and it added a little kick to my dish. Everyone else was pleased as well. The service was very good, our waitress and other staff members explained all our entrees when they arrived. The only complaint would be that the entrees came out at different times, but that was minor timing problem. The bill was about 55 dollars without drinks, there were three of us. Plenty of food and we took part home with us. Another good Chinese joint on Buford Hwy.

Group outing

Went here with a group of ladies. We ordered 3 appetizers and 8 different entrees. Everything was delicious and the service was excellent.

Delicious Taiwanese dinner

By Heindels |

Our party of 4 arrived at 7pm on a busy Sat. and were seated promptly, although there was a long line shortly afterward. Our companion couple had raved about the food, so we joined them on their return visit in what turned out to be a most enjoyable experience. We brought our own wines, which saved on the bill ( no corkage fee !!) . The service was promt, and quite friendly. We shared 4 entrees, and we also tried the hot and sour soup for 2. Best I've had in Atl. I can recommend ALL of our entrees. Salt and pepper calamari, Ginger and scallion fish fillet, House Noodle dish, and the 3 Cup Chicken. Plenty of white rice to share. Our bill total with tip was $80.00 A very fun dinner choice if you are in the BUHI area.

Best Taiwanese food in Atlanta!

By Hung yen S |

First of all, I am a full blown Taiwanese! I traveled to Taiwan to eat all delicious Taiwanese food! We moved to Atlanta just because ATL has a Taiwanese spot call Bento in Norcross. Now Taiwanese just got better in ATL metro. My go to place in Atlanta! They have the best Taiwanese food in town! 客家小炒 Pork Squid W / Leek Bean Curd is really good, I recommend everyone to try it. It is a Haka dish, it's like a big mix of pork, squid, leek, celery, and dry tofu aka bean curd. Being a Haka man, let me tell you the history of this dish. Haka people is known as the Jewish of Chinese people. Haka people are very frugal, yea sometimes we go way too far lol. Since we are frugal not just with money, most importantly with our food. Ah we just finish our dinner, and we still have left over, we will save it all for next day. We don't have a microwave, cause it is way back in the day, how are we supposed to heat it up. Bang let's just stir fried everything together. Ladies and Gentlemen, 客家小炒 Pork Squid W / Leek Bean Curd was born! Of course through out the years, we have made some adjustment to the dish, but that's how we made this dish. I can write million words about them, but just couple words is enough to describe this place. AWESOME TAIWANESE FOOD ! Enough said :)

Downward Spiral

By gowanusvin |

Ate at this interesting Taiwanese restaurant on its opening. Food was fresh, creative, service was impeccable Ate there a few more times and things wobbled. Today lunch: food was greasy or tasteless, warmed over; with courses arriving all at once. Rice clumpy tea tepid. All at high prices in an area overrrun with great cheap Asian hole-in-the-wall joints.

Atlanta Go-to for Taiwanese Cuisine

By Elliott M |

Because Ming's BBQ next door in Asian Square is among our half-dozen favorites for regular buddy lunches inside the perimeter, we noticed La Mei Zi from day one - and gave it a test ride soon after. Let me start with the service. There's only one word for it, "motherly." On my second visit, when I was two steps inside the door, the head waitress called out "Welcome back." Taking our orders, she glanced at me and said "You want the ma po tofu with pork again, right?" Right, I order this spicy entree every time to share and there are seldom any leftovers from the family-size bowl. Keep in mind that I'm the most ordinary-looking white-bread Southern guy you're likely to find. Note also that the dish can be had in a vegetarian version, sans the pork garnish. The other stars on our most recent visit were sautéed fish in black bean sauce and a complimentary appetizer, pickled mushrooms - which resembled smoked baby bats but were no less delicious for that. Alas, the basil chicken and pot stickers were no better than one would find in an ordinary Chinatown-style rice mill. On earlier visits soups were unusual and varied. Teapots and water glasses are refreshed without a request, the place is considerably cleaner than many in the neighborhood and there is on-site parking in the large strip mall.

Do NOT recommend

By Atlanta_GeorgiaRosie |

We just returned from this restaurant and are so, so disappointed. No ambiance, absolutely the most terrible service we have had in years at any restaurant, and very fair-to-poor food. How disappointing as we love Chinese food and continue to look for one that is good. This is definitely not the one. Eat at this restaurant at your own risk!

Unassuming yet tasty

By wheelerpa |

Consistently good Taiwanese food. I recommend the clam and ginger soup and the salt & pepper shrimp or calamari. No alcohol so bring your own.

Good but Poor !!!!!!

By Monica Z |

The place is very good, the food has good taste and presentation but very poor, I ordered a special fried rice from the house with chicken and shrimp and I ONLY had TWO SHRIMPS IN THE RICE and I paid it very expensive for what it was !!!

Great Taiwanese Food!

By Marc B |

Set back in a strip mall on Buford Highway but a gem. Not much ambience even though it is BYOB, you have to bring your own glasses. However, the food makes up for that in spades. I love the calamari starter and from there the main course options are varied but have not been lead wrong. They are all good and every time we have been we a good, left full happy and amazed at the low cost. It is favorite.

Great Blend of Taiwanese and Schezuan Dishes

By L D R |

Our Buford Hwy Friday Lunch group has this great restaurant on it's regular rotation.Good Value and good quality. Many of the same dishes as in their former restaurant Cafe 101. We really enjoyed the Steamed Cod in a soy and ginger sauce. Jelly fish. Bitter Melon and Beef and steamed pork and lamb dishes. Weekend Buffet is inexpensive but we add ed to it from the menu.

0 Star Review

By Hwc88 |

If I could give negative stars I would. I placed an order online. When I showed up to the restaurant there was a long line of disgruntled patrons waiting outside. I should have just walked away at that point. No one‘s order was on time or correct, and many orders had just been out right “lost“. By the time I got to the front of the line I was not hopeful, and indeed they had lost my order. I was told there was nothing they could/would do. I would like to note that this is not a review of the food, as I have never eaten anything from La Mei Zi, and after tonight I never will. There are many fantastic Szechuan restaurants on Buford Highway, this one is not worth your time.

Fantastic Taiwanese

By rochbound |

I chanced upon this restaurant the other day - a friend recommended it a few months ago. The food was fresh, delicious and authentic. My favorite was the beef rolled up in a scallion pancake but all the dishes were wonderful. I also had the Singapore noodles and the Sichuan Beef. I would stay away from the Sichuan choices, there are too many restaurants in the area that specialize in that type of regional cuisine, so this selection, while good, was hardly authentic, The wait staff was very attentive and the food came out promptly with no feeling of being rushed. The sliced mushroom in vinegar sauce was a free amuse bouche, Loved it - kinda like pickled ginger but nothing like it in taste.

Delicious Chinese / Taiwanese Food!

By SandBAtlanta |

This restaurant opened just a few months ago in Asian Square on Buford Highway. Asian Square is loaded with great restaurants, by the way, including Ming's, Quoc Huong, Sweet Hut and more. On weekends they offer a huge buffet, but I was here for a weekday lunch, so I ordered two appetizers: salt and pepper chicken and pork dumplings. You can have the dumplings steamed or pan fried, and I chose pan fried. My server asked me if I needed a fork, to which I proudly responded, "No." :) I LOVED this salt and pepper chicken. There was a generous amount of fried basil and huge cloves of garlic mixed in with the nuggets, and I happen to LOVE basil, so this was a big score. And as you can see the appetizer portion is huge. They also brought a complimentary seaweed salad, which was not my cup o'tea. It tasted like I'd been knocked down by a wave and swallowed a big gulp of ocean water. I also LOVE dumplings, and I have to say that these might be the best I've had in Atlanta. Seared and crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. And you know how sometimes when you bite into a dumpling the juice is so hot that you scorch your tongue? Well, these did not scorch, so bonus points! It's important to note that they do not accept credit cards, so be sure to have cash on hand. I put a $20 on the table towards the end of my meal, and the server picked it up quickly. Never saw a check or cash register. She returned with $6.20 in change, which is a steal considering I have a nice little box of leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Can't wait to come back!!

Nice addition to the Atlanta, Chamblee food scene

By vct123 |

We tried this “Asian bistro” for lunch on a THU. Their very tasty and authentic Taiwanese food that is sure to bring a smile to the face of Chinese foodies. We tried their jellyfish & celery appetizer, fish fillet in black bean sauce, and Taiwanese stir-fried rice noodle. All 3 dishes were very tasty and made us feel like we were eating in Hong Kong or Taiwan. We will soon be back to try other dishes in their rather extensive repertoire. In addition to having an obviously competent kitchen staff, their serving staff is also excellent: very helpful, and pleasant indeed! Furthermore, their décor is simple, pleasant, and calming, not common in most restaurants in “Chambodia”. Authentic Taiwanese food in Doraville, most unusual for Atlanta area!

Amazing Taiwanese Cuisine

By Harry v |

Absolutely love this place. Have not tried too many items, as I keep returning to the lamb with leeks and cilantro. This has to be on of the best dishes in Atlanta. I have this every 2 weeks. Heaven. Stuff I have had with my star rating:- 1. Lamb with leeks and cilantro - 5 2. Salt and Pepper Calamari - 3 3. Salt and Pepper Chicken - 4 4. Eggplant and Garlic - 5 5. Spicy Fish Hotpot - 5 6. Green Beans -4 My only disappointment is the Calamari. There is better on offer on BuHi. Service is fantastic, and very friendly. Most times we have been, my wife and I are the only non-Asians in the restaurant - a very good sign. Have not tried the Buffet on weekends.

Food is salty

By supersidecut |

Food is salty and lack of other tastes. Basil chicken was lack of basil. The quality does not match the price. They also charge extra if you pay with credit card.

Great Taiwanese / Chinese Food

By VJH95 |

We have been coming to this restaurant since it first opened the door. With limited competition, this is probably the best restaurant for Taiwanese style dining. Service is excellent which is another reason for us to keep coming back. We have never leave this place without 100% satisfaction. They serve a lunch special which you get a main dish, soup and steamed rice. The portion is very generous. The do a weekend special lunch buffet, not too many selections like the normal Chinese buffet and the quality is excellent. There is always a big line waiting to be seated so you want to get there early as they don't take reservation on the weekend buffet.

Extraordinarily good!

By suede2 |

We love this place- the food, the service, the decor and the wait time are all perfect. Not your ordinary Chinese place! They have unique dishes too- we tried the Taiwanese bbq beef, the lamb with leeks, the garlic eggplant (we asked it mild and they happily accommodated us) and the honey and nuts shrimp. Not cheap (65$ for dinner portions) but worth it. We'll try their lunch buffet soon.

Asian Bistro Worth Its Weight In Gold

By bigeoppa |

While shopping with my wife she decided that she would like to have lunch. Next door to one of our favorite Asian spots in Atlanta was La mei zi. I immediately noticed that we were the only non Asian people in the room, but it was only a fleeting moment. We were greeted at the door escorted to a table and offered a choice of menu items or a small buffet. We choose the buffet and it was an excellent decision. There were approximately 20 different items to choose from, 4 separate soups, 2 fruits coffee and a homemade plum drink. Our meal was extremely tasty, as we both sampled completely new flavors and combinations of seafood, pork, chicken and fresh vegetables. As we ate we were served bowls of white rice and EVERYTHING was hot tasting like it had just been prepared. On our next trip to Atlanta we are now place this restaurant into our private rotation. I almost feel like NOT SHARING this find for it is truly that good.

Absolutely divine food!

By Lolita D |

Being Asian, of course I love all Asian food and this restaurant made me very happy :-) My friend told me about it and we had lunch here together. I loved the pepper chicken and I asked the server to make it spicier so that was excellent! And the house fried rice (chicken, beef, shrimp) was just awesome! So also was the beans and pork. Yum yum! The lunch plates came with soup and complimentary appetizer. The prices were so low and the quantity and quality of food so good, I wanted to dance with joy! I am definitely going back for more!

Wow, so good Taiwanese cuisine

By gwwyjjliu |

A small, homey, but stylish restaurant, La Mei Zi serves authentic Taiwanese cuisine, expertly prepared to the highest standards of authenticity and taste. It's a bit pricey for Asian restaurants but the quality and generous portion size makes up for it. Especially recommended: the pork ribs over rice with a tea egg and side of bok choy - a deceptively simple dish that was amazing for it's tender meat and expertly blended flavors. The only disappointment was that they no longer serve 3 cup chicken, which is the signature Taiwanese dish and the mark of a great Taiwanese restaurant.

Not so great as Taiwanese resturant

By Julia H |

My husband and I grew up in Taiwan. We ordered Rurofan, and it was too salty. Nothing near what we had growing up eating. Same thing for beef noodle soup. All I could taste was soy sauce, very salty as well. Fried oyster from appetizer had not enough flavors, and oysters were very small. The only thing which was closest to what we grew up eating in Taiwan was the stinky tofu. It was very flavorful just like what we had back then. I have to give credit to their fast service. Food was served relatively fast. The servers were friendly and helpful.

Still very good

By michael p |

It has been six months since I ate here and reviewed there food. Back then I called it "wonderful tastes" and I am happy to report that it still has "wonderful tastes". Went with a group of ten and we ate family style each ordering a dish a sharing. There was nothing that wasn't very good. Although they say they are Taiwaneise to me they are Asian and that's what I like.

Great news for Taiwanese food lovers

By Mimi L |

My lucky day to find this place during my Atlanta visit. The restaurant has no fancy deco but comfy and clean, servers are friendly and helpful. Between my husband and my son, we had ordered hot & sour soup, spicy beef and beef tendon夫妻肺片, smoke duck & 台式小炒, especially the last two dishes were great choices. Thumb up!

Sublime flavors tempt the palate, fill the soul

By thecowboylawyer |

This is the best Asian restaurant in the Buford Highway corridor of Asian and international eateries. We joined some friends for lunch there two months ago and the food was great. We went back for dinner this weekend were just overwhelmed with how fantastic the food is at La Mei Zi. The steamed pork dumpling appetizer was the best we've ever had and the fried bread roll was divine. The smoked duck was good, but a little too smoky flavored for me. The dried radish stir fry was amazing, so full of tantalizing flavors that your mouth literally waters. By far the best dish was the spicy pork intestines with pork blood and tofu. When I ordered it the waitress cautioned that it was a dish many Americans might avoid, but I told her to bring it on. Was I glad I did. It was, literally, the best dish I've eaten in the last ten years. I kid you not. Amazing. The fish soup was divine as well. A not to miss Asian eaterie.

Very Good Lo Mein, Hot Sichuan fish, and Kung Pao Chicken

By ATLconsultant |

It's the 2nd best kung pao chicken ive ever had. Best sichuan fish i had since hong kong. We always get To Go and it's always correct and people are friendly.

Food very good. Service was poor.

By Michael H |

Taiwanese with Szechwan influences. 3 cup chicken was delicious. Pork belly was very good and different from others I've had. This was thin slices in a brown sauce with vegetables. Very tasty. House rice noodle was interesting. Angel hair rice noodles were tasty and different. Must be well known because about 8pm the place filled up. Service was lacking. There didn't seem to be sufficient staff. Getting water was impossible. I finally had to go to the counter and ask.

Excellent buffet

By Dr_Maru |

I really enjoy La Mei Zi. I have only ever been to the Saturday and Sunday buffet, so I cannot speak to the regular menu. It is quite a spacious restaurant and yet we often end up with a 10-20 minute wait time when we go. It has a wonderful atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. They will actually stop to take the time to chat rather than rush you out the door once you've paid for your meal. There aren't many places to find Taiwanese cuisine so I was very happy when a friend from Taiwan recommended this place. The buffet offers a great range of foods to please a variety of palettes. The offerings differ quite a bit from visit to visit, but it has all been delicious. I particularly enjoy the scallion pancakes and ground pork with star anise. The soy milk has the authentic flavor. I have enjoyed trying the stinky tofu here. Stinky tofu is quite tasty and I have had the pleasure of enjoying it in Taipei. Unfortunately, La Mei Zi only offers this dish seasonally on the menu; otherwise I would eat it year round. La Mei Zi offers one of the better buffets. I highly recommend it.

Friendly, Fun, Delicious, unique

By mattbeau |

Even the best restaurants on the BUHI difficulty distinguishing themselves in terms of "atmosphere," but owner Michelle (the "Spicy Lady") sets the tone with her joy of sharing and laughing. The food is excellent, too but that is secondary. Of course it is. BUHI has many excellent kitchens but NONE have the joy and exuberance of her dining room. Come for the food. Stay for the company. We fell in love with this nutty, kind, open hearted woman (and her very patient and tolerant quiet elder sister!).

Very Good

Great service great food friendly knowledgeable staff. Everything was perfect traditional fair. You won’t go wrong no matter what you order. Good lunch menu. Good prices. Enjoy.

Good Tasting food

By soitgoes14 |

We went for dinner on a Monday night. We used GPS and it took us right there. It is on the backside of a busy shopping center, but we had no issues with parking. The restaurant was quiet. We had not problem getting a table. It was very clean and nice inside. The wait staff was quick, and ordering was easy. We tried three smaller plates for the two of us and that was plenty of food. We got the hot and sour soup for 2, Dan Dan Noodles, and the Taiwanese Salt and Pepper Chicken with basil. I would recommend all three. The soup was very good. And if you were with a group of four and just wanted a small taste of soup four people could enjoy the amount served. You get a pile of salt and pepper chicken. We both enjoyed this. The Dan Dan noodles were good. They had numbing spice in them but we both agreed it was the amount we liked. Enough to get a taste of it but not over powering. Some may find it not enough but it worked for us. Outside of taste alone we felt the ingredients were good as well. Everything tasted great and seemed fresh. We noticed some had brought in wine. I’m fairly sure this location is BYOB but you may want to check ahead of time.

No more ordinary Asian food for me

By tigresseromantique |

A clean simple atmosphere. Modernish. Friendly knowledgeable wait staff. Oh so wonderful food. It is out of the way for me and my honey but the food is worth the drive. We have been twice now. Apps Braised Pork Belly Roll and the Scallion Pancake. Yum. I had the 3 cup bone in Chicken with Basil - OH YA UH. and the Pork Squid Leeks with bean curd. Not a bean curd fan but the rest was wonderful. I love their Jasmine tea. Will have to try the Thai iced tea next time.

Excellent Dinner

By Richard G |

My wife and I stopped here after a movie. The food was excellent. We split scallion pancakes and spicy Schezwan won tons. The tofu with pork was great. The tofu was super silky. We will definitely be back.
