OMG

By jespence60 |

OMG you have got to be kidding me. This place puts itself out there as a pizza place but my husband had the Fa Diavolo and I had the Veal Marsala. It was all fabulous and not terrible expensive. Their wine list is small but the Chianti was good. If I lived in this area I would eat here regularly.

Sumptous

By Djelayni |

Serving was big for an ordinary stomach. My friends have to take home their unfinished portions as price is a little bit high. Bread with butter, olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip were sufficient but a request to replenish the bread tray can be made. It wasn't so appealing for me to see the butter swimming on the olive oil and balsamic vinegar mix. This is the first restaurant that I went to that I have them all in one small bowl. There are lots of healthy choices in their menu. Vegetarians will love this place. I will definitely go back.

Excellent Food

By ASWJR78 |

This place has become my girlfriends favorite restaurant in the city. I have really grown to like it as well. We have never gotten anything bad on the menu. She loves the lobster ravioli and I enjoy the different types of Bruschetta the most. For the portions and food that you get this place is priced perfectly. It's not expensive but its not cheap, somewhere in the middle but yet you get great portion size as well as excellent food.

Awesome place

Pleasant surprise in University City

By Bill Senich |

What a wonderful discovery in University City. Outstanding good, attentive service in a clean and pleasant environment. The veal is over the top!

A little slice of Italy

By Steve W |

Great Italian restaurant that made you feel right at home. Many of the meals are served family style, so our party of 8 felt very comfortable sampling each other's appetizers. The mussels were terrific. The stuffed mushrooms were a joy. I had the veal piccatta and it certainly met my expectations. I would definitely return to dine here again.

Greatnspot for lunch

By Andres72423 |

After a visit to one of the local museums, the staff recommended we visit this restaurant to get a bite to eat. We were absolutely pleased with the choice. The staff was quick to get us seated and were very attentive to our needs. I ordered the lasagna while my girlfriend ordered the Chicken parm. Our meals were simply delicious. It was perfect, great portions and great taste. Highly recommend this place!

Dinner!

By AllieFaber |

We like to have a nicer dinner at least once while away for a weekend. La Scala's was perfect! The food was amazing, and the service on point.

Average all around

By Brian W |

Pretty basic italian restaurant in Old City Philly. We ordered takeout as my wife was not feeling super well so I walked from our hotel to pick it up. I got the "Sunday Gravy" special which was pretty basic. It wasn't bad but wasn't anything special either. My daughter got a very generous portion of kids Penne with marinara which she said was "fine." I'd try somewhere else next time I'm in Philly.

Be sure you get what you ordered!

By Rose F |

We decided to eat here as we had about 90 minutes for our timed tickets to visit Independence Hall. As were sitting outside, one of the horse and carriage drivers drove by and shouted "that's a great place to eat!" Maybe it really is a great place to eat, but they may need better waitstaff. Our order was as follows: veal piccata, 2 chicken piccatas, and one tuna steak. My son ordered his tuna steak well-done and it came burnt and dried out - I told him that was because it was ordered well-done but I think an restaurant of that caliber could have done better. My DIL received the wrong dish, which was replaced with the correct one. I ordered veal piccata and when I was presented with veal parmesan I asked the waiter if it was veal piccata and he lied and said it was - I decided to not argue the point as he had already put in the wrong order for my DIL. All in all, I would not recommend eating here.

Pleasant Italian Restaurant

By larryderm |

A pleasant Italian restaurant in the Washington Square area. The drinks are good sized, and the chopped salad is large enough to share. The pastas and their various sauces are usually fine.

Great Italian Experience

By SidSidow |

As I walked in the host was a bit pre-occupied with checking something on his phone ( a new generational obstacle we must face?? ) But after kindly greeting me, I was seated in a nicer room than expected - thought I would be seated at the bar. Started with a massive La Scala chopped salad, almost too much other stuff - I would like more lettuce. Very tasty though. Now my lasagna showed up, beautiful! Had to sit and drink half my glass of wine waiting for it to cool down! Good stuff, too much for me to consume. Near Independence Hall, worth finding La Scala after your day of sightseeing!!

Good

By Corbin G |

Good not great Italian place in a very convenient location. Prices were a bit high, but food was fresh, service was fantastic. Big portions, neither of us finished our meals because we just got too full.

Great food in center city

By Jaime1221 |

If you want great pasta in Center City, try this place. The service is outstanding and they have outside seating. Lots of locals eat here, which is always a good sign.

delicious

By arthur w |

our dinner at la scala's, located on the border of old city/center city, was excellent. the food was wonderfully prepared, and the prices reasonable. we started with a chopped salad which was delicious, and big enough for four, and an portobello mushroom/zucchini appetizer. the main courses, tilapia, and pappardelle with a ground sausage sauce were beautifully prepared and full of flavor. if the rest of the items on the menu receive the same care, (and there is no doubt that they do), you can't go wrong. outdoor seating is available. strongly recommended.

Great Selection of Food

By ALAN B |

In town for a business trip. Was taken by a client. The food selection was tremendous, it took a while to decide. Very nice location and close to everything. I was in town and it happen to rain at the time, they were nice enough to grab a cab for me. We are planning a family trip and will be going there for dinner. Excellent!

Tastes as good as it smelled!

By Carolyn m |

Had a fantastic dinner at La Scala last night with 3 friends! It was traditional/comfort Italian food that hit the spot! We split several appetizers - of note the eggplant parm and artichoke dish were outstanding. The chopped salad was amazing too! All of our entrees were also delicious. The server was pleasant and the ambiance just perfect. What a great spot!

Horrific customer service!!

By Camille D |

Go somewhere else! Rude and not accommodating at all. Very snotty and felt discriminated against because we had small children with us. And to think we were mere yards from the Liberty Bell!

Always A Treat

By Greg P |

Although I have reviewed LaScala's before, it's worth mentioning that at no time have we ever been disappointed. Ate there very recently and once again, service is superb and the items we ordered were amazing. If we had one suggestion, it would be for LaScala's to add a few more entrees to their menu. But there is always something wonderful to try. Recommended HIGHLY - Great food and service - Competitive prices

weekend retreat

By nicholas m |

TIrcho sez: My wife and I decided to visit Phila and we just happened to walk by La cala when we were looking for a place to eat. We had no idea about the place and when we left 45 minute later, we could not stop talking abut the great food and so forth. the soup was super, My wife had a pixie that was bi enough for two and I had the most delicious sandwich.. the spinach appitizer was a meal in itself.. It is nice to not make plans and have the result be so rewarding. we will attend La Scala on future visits to the city. Try it!!!

Thanksgiving Day

By Travvllr |

We stumbled upon this restaurant looking for anyone open for lunch on Thanksgiving day. What a lovely surprise! Great food, great service.

Fantastic restaurant. 5⭐️

By Elisa N |

We have been in the US for one week (traveling north on the east coast) and this is the very first time that we had a healthy and delicious meal ⭐️. The service was perfect with very friendly and helpful waiters. We (family of three vegetarians) definitely recommend La Scala’s ♥️

Dont pass this by!

By NYC_Girl_Forever |

We went sightseeing in the Phila area and after walking around Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell we decided to find a place for lunch. While walking around, like typical tourists, a young girl standing on the corner trying to sell bus tours asked if she could help us, we said yes, we are looking for a good Italian restaurant. She pointed down the block and said LaScala's is the place to go, so we went. The restaurant is very nicely appointed, nice old pictures on the walls, nice bar area, TV's on with local sports and world cup soccer . Since it was warm out we decided not to sit outside and opted for an inside table. Ordered appetizers, salads and main courses, all were delicious! They have some really nice salads, not your run of the mill type, but not so exotic that you wouldn't order them either. I especially loved the eggplant parm appetizer. The had a nice drink menu and we decided to try a strawberry, basil, sangria made with Pinot Grigio. Now you are probably thinking the same thing we did "strawberry, basil sangria?" Yes - it was the best sangria we ever had, and we love sangria. We liked the restaurant so much that we actually went out of our way to go back the next night for dinner. We ordered different salads, different main entrees and again, perfectly cooked and delicious. We tried the parmesan crusted tilapia, and wow, it was fantastic. And yes, we ordered another pitcher of the strawberry, basil sangria. If you are ever in the Phila area you have to try this restaurant. You will leave very satisfied and very full, they have large portions! Great food, great drinks and great service.

Affordable tasty lunch

By Chu_Sam23 |

The mussels in white wine sauce was spectacular, tangy with a tinge of alcohol. A must try. I ordered the petite fillet and the spaghetti bolognese. Both were very well done.

Nice Italian Restaurant in historic area

By kak531 |

Kids loved the pizza. We had spaghetti and veal parm - both were good. Prices were reasonable for the area. Overall, pretty good.

18 Guests

By Paul B |

We arrived with a party of 16 and they put us in a nice back room. Originally I called and they had appetizers of incredible calamari, tomatoes and Mozzarella, and chip salad. Perfect start. We ordered from the menu and everyone commented on how great their meal was prepared. We all received our meals at the same time and all hot. A side note there was another large party as well in our area. So it was an excellent job by kitchen to get all the meals out. Plus wine was perfect, service was excellent all around. I would highly recommend this restaurant for both a large party and a nice dinner. I will happily return!

Waste of time

By KAL |

Right now I can’t even remember what it was that I ordered. It had linguine and chicken in it. It was the worst Italian dish I’ve ever had. It was as bland as ever.

Hostess was rude!

By 5050Andi |

I called to place an order and then cancel the order in less than 5minutes. The female on the line was very rude! I will NEVER DINE THE EVER!!!

Friendly Old style Italian Restaurant

By Laurence_B_Jacobs |

We went to La Scala's for dinner. The clientele was a mixture a locals, who seemed regulars and tourists. The room was very pleasant, but could have done without the TV. The food was very good indeed, but the portions are enormous. I'm a big fella and my veal Marsala could have fed three of us. My wife had chicken Milanese and it was perfectly cooked with a super sauce, but again huge. If is was in the area I would definitely return, but order for 1 person to feed at least 2.

Excellent Italian Food in casual atmosphere

By DAK185 |

Delicious!!! Great restaurant near historic district. My friend and I both ordered the fusilli with seafood. It came with huge scallops, shrimp and crabmeat in a creamy tomato sauce. We both loved it. The bread is also great. My new job brings me to this part of Philadelphia regularly. I will definitely return here!

Great Place to Rest and Grab a Quick Bite

By francp616 |

We were looking forward to a place with A/C (temperature was pretty warm in Philly) around Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell where we could rest for a while and eat a good pizza. La Scala's was the right choice. The place was elegant and the pizzas were delicious and reasonably priced!

Pleasant lunch, everyone happy.

By MEKinsler |

Part of the pleasure of having older kids is watching their tastes mature. When traveling, we usually let our three kids take turns choosing restaurants. Based on the description of having "housemade" gnocci, this was my son's choice. It is decorated like an Italian bistro. We were given a nice corner table away from the business lunch crowd. Two of my kids ordered the gnocci. It came out with chunks of mozzarella mixed in and was definitely tender. They both approved. My youngest ordered fresh ravioli and finished her entire plate. My husband and I shared the grilled portabella and zucchini appetizer over polenta. Fabulous! We also shared the Mista salad and Ricotta, eggplant and basil specialty pizza. We ordered a large cheese pizza to share. Everything was great. Unfortuntely, we didn't have room for dessert. It is a very short walk to Independence Hall.

Simple food

By Lisa_NJ_NY |

Location on Chestnut St keeps this place going, the food is as good as you'd find at a nice pizzeria. Simply prepared, but good. A bit pricey for what is it, but the service staff was nice as well. That area doesn't have too many options.

Waste of money

By MississippiEllen |

We've eaten here before and it's been fine. It was an impromptu visit so we decided to hit something familiar. First, despite there being multiple empty tables, the host tried to seat us at a table poorly positioned in the path of the bathroom right in front of the waiter station. The stuffed long hots appetizer (have ordered before) was ok. The marinara pizza looked sad and tasted fair, at best. Have they changed management or something?? The only bright spot was how attentive and friendly our waiter was! Will not be back!

Exceptional

By Susan M |

Everything was perfect. I came in alone at 5 pm ...and was seated in a quiet area next to the window. Then I ordered a pasta dish with crumbled sausage sauce. It was excellent...unfortunately I couldn't eat it all...and saying in a hotel it wasn't an option to get it to go. I heartily enjoyed every bite ! Great msic, great atmosphere, great host and waitress, great prices. I will be back in a few days !

Good restaurant

By Jaroslav Nečas |

We have been there for a quick lunch during my trip to city. All meals were very tasty, staff was very helpful.

DELISH!

By Ashley J |

Food is absolutely delicious! I usually hit them up during restaurant week...four courses for $35. I love their baked eggplant parm, gnocchi, salad with white balsamic dressing, and their creme brûlée...so yummy! *Bonus...they are attached to a parking garage so you never have to go outside. You just take the elevator right to the restaurant AND they valid parking. La Scala's is a MUST!!!

Perfect end to a day's sightseeing

By TheLonePoster |

We had spent the afternoon and early evening walking around the many splendid sights in the city, and by 8pm we were feeling hungry. quite by chance we came upon La Scala's. The décor and menu were both inviting, so we went in - a very good decision. The restaurant was busy and lively. Our server was courteous and efficient, and brought us iced water and some splendid foccacia as we decided on our order. we both went for pizzas. they were excellent - fresh and tasty. The atmosphere in the restaurant was animated and friendly. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their meal as much as we did. If I ever return to Philadelphia, I would certainly eat here again. if you are in the city and want a good value, well-presented meal in a welcoming restaurant - this is the place for you.

I have never given a restaurant 5 stars before

By Nikked |

We found this restaurant by accident and it was the best feed I had during this holiday in the USA. Service was excellent but the food was amazing, my pizza was mouthwatering. This is the place to stop for a feed in Philly.

Ordinary

By TonyTiger19 |

We are used to great food in Montreal. Although the service was impeccable my veal was just OK. The quality of meet was just ordinary. The restaurant offers great environment.

great food!

By BrainDoc90 |

It was a miserable spring night - cold and rainy. But I promised my daughter some good Italian food and found this on Open Table. I was mildly disappointed when I got there, it looked very generic inside and we were seated in a booth which was nice, but in the bar area. Everyone was friendly, but it was a slow night and we were kind of far away from the main action, so we did feel a little abandoned at times. (I should note that there is a nicer main dining room that wasn't being used that night) All was forgiven when the food came out, everything was great! We were still full of our huge 3 sandwich lunch at Tony Luke's, so we were trying to take it easy and shared a Caesar salad, a pizza, lobster ravioli and sausage and peppers side. Again I have to say, everything was great! This started as a pizza place and it has gone beyond that!

Decent food, poor service

By Kimberly S |

Better than average Italian dinner at LaScala's. Bread and balsamic honey butter were an amazing start. Entrees were tasty with generous portions. The seafood special was delicious and the chicken parmigiana was reliably tasty. Service, though, really put a damper on our night...slow to refill drinks and bread, even thought the restaurant was not crowded. This was our second visit and our first visit was much better...might have to give them one more chance...

Caught in the rain

By id23336 |

I doubt I would have stopped here, but for a sudden thunderstorm. And I doubt a thunderstorm would force me in here again. It was happy hour, so I had the house cab and three appetizers. The fried calamari were tough and flavorless; the fried eggplant sticks were inedible; and the fried ravioli were just edible. Not much of a meal for $35. I suppose it would have been better had the server cared enough to ask if everything were all right, but I think he knew it was a silly question.

Just okay

By Jennifer K |

We made a last minute reservation when the wait was too long at another restaurant that we wanted to go to. Service was noticeably very slow. It was all we could do to get drink/water refills. Our food took so long to come out that we had to ask for more bread to hold us over. After all was said and done it was close to a 2+ hour dinner for just a three course appetizer, main, and dessert meal. The bread and our appetizer was very good but I felt like my main dish was just okay - and probably it was all akin to chain restaurant Italian food. I don't mind chain restaurant Italian food at all when I am paying chain prices. I feel like this restaurant was over priced especially considering the slow service and mediocre food.

Excellent Lunch

By SandN855 |

On a recent trip to the Italian Consulate, we took a short walk to look for some lunch. We found a gem ! Excellent food and service reasonably priced. In addition to the excellent lunch, we were treated to a great selection of 60s music playing in the background.

Bravo La Scala's

By theredwiner |

La Scala, in Milan, is Italy's premier opera theater. La Scala's in Philadelphia, deserves just as many "Bravos" for their premier productions. Conveniently located, we were surprised we could get immediately seated at 1:15, during the business Lunch rush. Our waiter, James, provided just the right amount of time to review the wine list, which offered an ample selection of types over a price range to suit anyone. My wife started with the Octopus Salad while my appetizer was the Stuffed (prociutto & mozzarella cheese) Italian Long Hots. Both dishes were excellent and could have stood alone as lunch entrees. We both had the Chicken Sorrento for our main course. Chicken with eggplant, tomatoes and olives in a wine sauce. Absolutely delicious. We were famished after walking around the cold city all morning but our entrees were so good, and filling, that we didn't even touch the side of Broccoli Rabbe we ordered. We took that home to enjoy tomorrow. We will definitely return again to sample their dinner offerings.

Great food and service

By Jules1962 |

Great food and service. We didn’t have a reservation and visited on a busy evening. Friendly and welcoming service

Good food

By 1GiantsMSo |

Found this walking around Philadelphia's Liberty Square area and was very pleased. The Manhattan was well made. The chopped salad was enough for two, very good. The Proscuitto pizza was delicious and filling. The Veal Parmigiano was outstanding. The meat melted in my mouth. Somehow Victoria convinced us to try the Tiramisu and it was excellent. Very convenient walk from our hotel. Would recommend a reservation for Thursday evening.

dinner meeting

By Pam C |

First timer with a group of 7. Excellent service and timing of food to enjoy conversation and apps before entrée arrival. Very generous portions. Great concern over correct filet doneness. Parking validation a plus.

Don't order too much

By scats36 |

We took a chance since we were in the neighborhood. We lucked out and plan to return. Be prepared to bring home a doggie bag if you indulge in an appetizer and/or a salad. It seems like all chices can be split. An added bonus is the superior food quality. My seafood pasta had more authentic crab, scallops and shrimp that I was taken by surprise. Prices are fair, so what ore can you ask.

Nothing to get excited about...

By The SCUBAholic |

Pretty average Italian food in a very drab and uninspired room; it’s like modern East German decor if that is a thing... Place needs a makeover front and back of the house! Not one of Philadelphia’s better options... bar area is very tight also.

Very good italian food!

By VParPed |

We found this restaurant walking around and It was a really nice surprise! The tomato sauce that they used is really good & tasty! I strongly recommend this place to have lunch or dinner!!

Good Menu, Good Food, Nice Lunch Ambience at La Scala's in Philadelphia

By sillygirl49 |

I've dined in this establishment quite a few times now when I am in the area. I am from New Jersey and usually take PATCO to 8th and Market Street where I emerge from the subway. It's short walk from there to La Scala's which is my favorite restaurant in the area. Although I've only been there for lunch, I would imagine their dinner menu is just as good or better. Their varied pizza menu is outstanding and I just love the nice crispy crust on their pizza. This time I decided to try a departure from the traditional and went with a 12 inch size with eggplant, arugula, dried tomato, ricotta cheese, with more shredded cheese on top and a whole wheat crust. While it was fresh tasting, crust amazing, I still longed for the more traditional tomato pizza, so it was a little bit disappointing. On the way out, the waitress asked me about it and when I expressed my opinion, she said that is why when she orders it, she always orders a side of marinara sauce for dipping. I wish she would have told me that when I ordered! Also ordered an arugula salad, which as usual was fresh and tasty. Overall, if you like pizza and you like Italian food, there is something to like at La Scala's in Philadelphia. There is a lot to see around the location of this restaurant as well. Close to Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, etc.

Great Italian food at La Scala

By WorldTravelerSoCal |

Five star food near Independence Hall. Great outdoor seating in summer . Worth the walk after seeing the mall . Had the Italian salad and meatball. Very yummy .

Great Wine

By Dan C |

I've been here a number of times and every time has been great. Get a few dishes and share them with the table. Everything is great and a good wine selection too.

Very Nice Happy Hour

By miathecat |

We happened upon La Scala's after a long day of sightseeing and needing adult refreshments. The martinis were excellent and the wait staff engaging and prompt. The Happy Hour food menu was fairly extensive but you could also order off the dinner menu is needed. The pizza we ordered was very good but the best was the fried eggplant sticks served with marinara sauce. Prices were very reasonable.

Always good

By Kathy_R-Philly |

Lots of choices on the menu. Have never had a bad meal here, Service is relatively quick. The wait staff is usually friendly (just the right amount.) There are multiple areas to the restaurant so they can handle a large party.

What Can You Add to PERFECT?

By Greg P |

We keep going back to La Scala's in Philadelphia for 2 reasons - PERFECT Food and PERFECT Service. Just about every time we visit Philadelphia, we stop by for dinner and have NEVER EVER found anything to complain about. The staff is super professional, friendly and efficient, and we would love to know how they manage to prepare the food so well. With all of the places to eat in Philadelphia, you GOTTA go to LaScalas

Average Italian restaurant

By Joske |

Average Italian restaurant. Service was friendly and reasonable. Quality of food was oke. Not really special.

Good Italian Food

By sonnecj |

Very friendly service. My gluten free penne with fra diablo sauce was delicious. My wife wasn’t as enthused about the pasta with clam sauce. Other couple enjoyed there meals. Solid but not extraordinary.

Wonderful

By mdgipsy |

We stopped in for dinner on a Friday evening. Seated quickly, server was excellent as was the food. Efficient and reasonably priced. I would highly recommend.

Tasty italian

By Phil J |

Our hotel had a list of restaurants close by. We chose La Scala's as it was a short walk and we love Italian. Serves were ample and very tasty. The atmosphere was fun with sports on the TVs. An enjoyable night.

fresh Ingredients, clean presentation of food

By L C |

Recently enjoyed an early dinner, the staff was attentative and professional, the food was very good (fresh made ravioli) the sauce was fresh (not turned-over) and the presentation of the food was appealing, all very moderately priced. simple decor and clean atmoshere. There is definetly a conscious & caring chef here. We will definetly return without hesitation.

Great Italian with delicious food

By heikekiram |

More fanatical Italian, modern and clean. Great service, no loud music. Food was delicious and very reasonably priced for the USA. Wine was great

Nice place, nice people

By Woody & Kathy L |

After a day of traveling and getting settled into our hotel, we got a recommendation from the front desk for this place. Their recommendation wasn't wrong. Quick courteous and friendly service and very good pizza. Place was doing a lot of take out orders so other people must like it too.

A return to the horrible days of the Italian spaghetti house of the '80s.

By Giovanni S |

Went there hoping for an informal Italian dinner with three business contacts. Notwithstanding the genuine efforts of a nice Italian waiter the experience brought me memories of the 80's. A undefined wine list without producer, so they can pass of any latest and cheapest wines they bought for "Chianti" or "amarone", or anything else. The various foods, a mess piled up in a plate, badly cooked and presented like on a plate at a bad office canteen. A horrible experience that I do wish on anyone else that is looking for an "Italian food" experience. This is not Italian food.

Rude and cold staff

By jodhpur00 |

Just went for coffee/snack. Surprised to see "happy hour" time so was pleased and thought bill would be in half! NO! Instead told rudely while waiting on Pizza takeout stand aside, these are happy hour as we dnt order from the bar? Really? Didnt know there are different places to order from. Girl At register was nonchalant, no smile, just matter of fact. Place was empty @ 4 -5pm and you would think otherwise. Olde means either old loyal clients who come later or that business poor or staff is not paid well. Better Italian choices a plenty - SKIP

La Scala for Lunch

By Tupelo010835 |

Four of us had lunch here a couple of weeks ago and it was a fantastic experience. Very attentive waitstaff who we informed we only had about 45 minutes to dine. I ordered lagasne and it was perfect with just the right amount of sauce, noodles, meat and cheese. The decor was upscale without feeling formal and stuffy. If I am ever in Philly again La Scala will definitely be on the list. And we were out of there in 45 minutes.

Great Pizza

By kay036 |

We stopped at the Comcast Food Court and had a lot of choices. The pizza of the day here was great! It was a large slice with a thin crust and lots of cheese and mushrooms and pepperoni. We enjoyed it very much and will come back next time we are in the area. The price ($3.51) seemed high, but I guess it is downtown Phiily.

Bizarre Show

By R L |

My husband and I were hosting visitors from out of town and we'd just finished the silly but fun duck tour when our group of 6 agreed upon an Italian lunch. It was noon on a weekday and many places we walked past were packed. My first clue about this place should have been the uniformed employees sitting on the outdoor tables out front smoking cigarettes. No judging about the smoking-but why do it sitting on tables where people eat right in front of the establishment? When we entered we were promptly and warmly greeted by the hostess. The interior was nicely appointed though I couldn't help but notice there was only one table occupied in the entire restaurant-ignored clue #2. As we were perusing the menu the server came for our drink orders. Now, I'm partial to Coke products and given the hot day was craving a fountain soda diet Coke. I was disappointed to learn they only had Pepsi products and was about to order iced tea when my sweet husband offered to go to the nearby convenience store to get my diet coke and pour it into a glass from the restaurant. The server's response: "THIS is a restaurant." Thanks, Captain Obvious. Subsequently, the server snarked answers to some questions regarding menu items and everyone at our table started looking at each other like,"Is this bizarre, or is it just me?" I ignored clue #3 and we began placing our orders when my husband left the table ostensibly to ask the manager if he could bring in a soda for me. Hubby was told no in no uncertain terms. I worked in restaurants for years: server, sous chef & front of house manager. Never would I have been so rude to customers or for that matter, forgone the income of a 6 top for a 2 dollar soda. Given the unprofessional behavior of everyone we'd encountered but the hostess, we were concerned about the prep of our food. We stopped ordering, gathered our things and left before the folks at La Scala soured our fun day. The food may be fine there, but neither we nor anyone we know will darken their doorstep again. There are far too many fine restaurants with great food AND service in Philadelphia for anyone to subject themselves to the sort of foolishness we encountered here. As a small business owner myself, I do understand there are potential clients who are challenging at best-but we were not those people. So we took ourselves to another restaurant to drop $300 on a nice lunch. I assist a concierge business so keep a journal with store front pictures of places I've been. For La Scala's last act, when I took a picture outside a few employees came out to shout taunts at me from across the street and hop around like monkeys. . .my companions and I had a good laugh over the buffoons but as the title states-very bizarre. Skip it.

Delicious

By majcc4 |

We were amazed at the potion sizes- huge! Papardelle bolognese was absolutely great. Chicken Parm served 3 easily ( so take-out for next night's dinner). Prices were reasonable. Service was excellent. A great recommendation from our hotel staff. On a main street, it is an easy walk within the historic district.

Pleasant and good food

By hduck |

We had just left the liberty Bell and was looking for a place to eat. We were fortunate to find this place a block away. We walked in and the place is very clean. We were able to get in without a reservation. We were waited on immediately. We ordered 2 appetizers one the cheese steak egg roll and the truffle fries. Both great. For our meal we ordered the pepperoni calazone and a cheese steak one. You can split the portion as it's family style. Both great. Left there nice and full for 4 of us. Ate before we took pictures.

Outstanding New Year's Eve Menu

By elleoa |

We made a reservation via a third-party platform for New Year's Eve and were not told that there would only be one $50 option with options for appetizers, entrees, and dessert. Aside from this surprise, we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at La Scala's. The staff was courteous even though it was a busy night. The meat was particularly tender and well seasoned. The desserts were a delight -- the chocolate chip banana bread pudding was particularly delicious.

Delicious Lasagna

Very nice and cozy restaurant with great Italian food, the lasagna was really good and the service was good, great on the host part and OK on the waitress part. Excellent value for money.

A great Dinner!

We stopped in during restaurant and had a delicious dining experience. Every dish was yummy and we shared the wings, sausage & peppers, lobster ravioli, salmon and homemade pasta. Will surely return as the menu had lots of additional dishes to try.

Nice atmosphere, great food

First time in the area, this place was recommended by a local bank employee. Not far from Independence Hall and Liberty Bell. Restaurant has nice atmosphere. Waiter was....okay, but the food was very good. Had the scallops with roasted potatoes in a mushroom sauce with veggies. Serving was large and so good I almost licked the plate. Price was what I expected. About $75 for 2 of us including dessert. I would not recommend this place for families, but as a nice date out. Nice bar area with televisions without the sports bar feel. I plan on eating here again when I visit the area.

Great Food

Had a great lunch this past Saturday at La Scala's in Philadelphia. Started off with the Broccoli Rabe with sausage ($10). The Broccoli Rabe was cooked just right and there was a lot of sausage in the dish. I would definitely order this again. We both ordered pasta dishes. I had the Fettuccini Roma ($16) and it had shrimp with a nice alfredo sauce that wasn't swimming in the sauce. My wife had the Pappardelle Pasta ($13). This is the wide noodle pasta and it was in a butter sauce with mushrooms. She really LOVED it. At this time of the year they had some specialty drink cocktails. We both enjoyed the Salted Carmel Martini. It contained Salted Carmel Vodka, Apple Pucker, Buttershots and cranberry juice. It really had a fall feeling to the drink. A little sweet but very pleasant. This restaurant in the daytime is casual. The chairs are comfortable and the service friendly. One complaint would be that the bar took awhile for them to make the martinis and the place wasn't really busy. Yes, we would definitely go back for the Broccoli Rabe, the martinis and the pastas. Great location just a block away from jeweler's row.

Very good, but heavy on the salt

I work around the corner from LaScala's so it's a frequent lunch destination. I've probably had 80% of the menu offerings! Chicken parm is consistently delicious. Pizza is always a winner. Baked eggplant and sausage/peppers appetizers among best I've had. I wish the chef would scale back just a bit on the salt...the food is good enough on its own! Generous portions, and that applies to wines as well.

Good Enough to Return

By Patty R |

When you're traveling with kids it's not always easy to please everyone. But parents, grandparents and children liked this place well enough to return before our vacation was over. The service was a little slow, but at least this place had wine which I came to find out is not always the case with Philadelphia restaurants.

So good I came twice in a week

After a series of disappointing meals was happy to have found this place. The truffles mac and cheese is a must, and the pear gruyere pizza was amazing. Would visit again!

Great food and atmosphere!

We loved La Scalia! Big, bright and beautiful atmosphere, great food and service. We shared a pizza, panini, ravioli and Rigatoni ala Vodka and everyone was happy. Definitely a great find after tours of Independence Mall area!

Great place to eat if going to Walnut Street theater

By lizett251 |

We love eating at La Scalas. Every dish is yummy, the service is great and the location is the best. We always sit by a window and watch the horses and carriages go by. La Scalas is conveniently located next to a secure parking garage. If you are going to The Walnut Street theater you show them your ticket and get a parking voucher. This is given to the parking lot attendant when leaving for free parking! What a deal. If you are a season ticket holder, you show that ticket for 10% off your meal! But the best part is the food. Their drinks are great. I love their Bloody Mary. The salads are wonderful and the pasta is also super. Their appetizers are also yummy! We love La Scalas!

Convenient location, good food

We came here for dinner while visiting downtown Philly. The service was good, not outstanding. Waiter seemed confused when my husband asked for a sample of beer to try before ordering. Hey, my husband knows his craft and local beers, and won't waste time on one he doesn't like! We shared the goat cheese, beet and walnut salad and it was wonderful! He had seafood pasta in vodka sauce and I had veal piccata. Both were very good and plentiful. Had we known how big the portions were, we would have shared. My husband said his sautéed spinach was salty and not good, he didn't eat it. We hated leaving food behind but we were in a hotel.

Amazing lunch!

We found this restaurant on Trip Advisor. On a dreary January day, we were amazed with such a warm and welcoming Italian restaurant. I asked them to make a primavera pasta (not on the menu). It was incredible. Excellent service. Delicious dessert- make sure to ask to see the dessert tray and to try their homemade limoncello!

Molto Bene

By AstonV1213 |

Huge portions very reasonably priced, only 2 blocks from Independence Hall. We had a wonderful Caprese salad split between two; gigantic veal Parnigano with pasta ($15); fettuccini Bolognese; the small Stromboli was enough for 3 people, and rigatoni Vodka...with fresh from the oven and fresh cut Italian bread. Bring an appetite.

Average restaurant

Came here last night with my siblings. We made reservations for 830 and were seated right away. The restaurant was not at capacity so there was no issues with our seats. The bread and butter is fantastic unfortunately that was the best part of the meal. We had two people order the special for the night only to then be told that there was only one filet left in the kitchen. We shared some appetizers. Everyone like the brussel sprouts and ricotta cheese board. I didn’t try either one so I can’t comment on them. I had the meatballs which were ice cold. Very unappetizing. I had the fussili with seafood which was a large portion and very good. My wife and sister had the crab cakes which is something I typically get at restaurants but this time I’m glad I did not. Probably the worst crab cake I’ve ever tasted. The top was just flat out burnt. Yes it was a Saturday night but still this was the noisiest restaurant I have ever been in. I couldn’t hear a conversation at our table all night. There were some pros and some cons but I most likely will not be visiting again. The cold meatballs and burnt crab cake really put me off.

Very typical Italian

By Mike_ATL100 |

This is a typical Italian restaurant with large servings of pasta and other dishes. I went with the pappardelle and bolognese sauce. It was very good. Not great, but solid Italian fare as you would expect. It was so large, I did not both to order anything else except a Peroni to wash it down. Service was average and somewhat a waiter who could care less. Overall, no big complaints, but I would not go out of my way to eat here.

Great lunch while visiting Independence Hall

Needed a place to get a good meal on a tour of historic sites. It was convenient, the staff were very friendly, and most importantly, the food was great. It's clearly popular for lunch with locals who work in the area. Delicious bread!

Affordable Italian Food in upcoming neighborhood

By dfc9258 |

I attended a business lunch at La Scala's and this was my first time. The restaurant is warm and inviting and the location is on Chestnut Street in an area that is poised for greatness, but isn't there yet. The service was a bit slow and inconsistant, but the food was worth the wait. I had the chopped salad for an appetizer which was large and delicious. For my entee I had the tagliatelli with meat sauce which was rich and delicious. Prices are just right for the quality and quantity of the portions and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a nice Italian meal at reasonable prices.

Good. Not great.

Ehhh. As a visitor to Philadelphia I was relying on OpenTable to help me with my dinner options. We wanted Italian, and we wanted something in/near the Old City neighborhood...so we were led to LaScala's. When we arrived we almost kept walking and tried to find something else, just because it didn't look like what we were expecting it to look like. But we went in and ate...and our server was fantastic, and the food was decent. For us it just loses points for atmosphere...or lack thereof... Pros: Decent food and good service (minus the hostess who was on her phone when we arrived) Cons: Bright lights and faux brick walls

Ridiculously slow service, average food

By Katherine K |

I rarely leave a bad review and have waited two days before writing this, but dinner at LaScala was such a disappointing experience that I want to warn anyone who’s visiting Philadelphia and hoping for a great Italian meal to look elsewhere. The food was just average at best and not particularly flavorful, although to their credit, the portions were large. The worst part was having to wait over an hour for our entrees. Bread didn’t even arrive until about 45 minutes after being seated, drinks were slow too, and after that we had to track down the waiter to see when our appetizer would arrive. Although our waiter was friendly enough and apologized for the delays after a while, it was really aggravating, especially given the ultimate food quality. We didn’t bother to stay for dessert - had to cut our losses. I would steer clear of this place.

Yummy

Great service

A long layover allowed for a day sightseeing in Philadelphia. Came across La Scala while wandering the historic sights and enjoyed a tasty fresh lunch indoors with air conditioning. The beet salad $12 had roasted beetroot roasted walnuts and goats cheese on mixed leaves served with delicious hot fresh breads. A side dip of butter in oil and herbs was just right. Friendly ambiance and clean bathrooms. Nice place!
