We had not heard anything about the food, but visited because it was cute. The burger fries fish & slaw were great....Soo much better than the Friendly Spot which is close & more publised.

Refuses to rectify even the slightest of problems like a wrong order. Would much rather blame the customer, give a refund, and then gossip about the customer while they are in earshot all for an order of mushrooms that probably costs them 30 cents. Never coming back and never recommending.

Came here for the beer. Nice outside, under the trees watering hole that could get addictive if not for raunchy clientele at times. Have limited myself to lunch or early afternoon visits and do nothing but enjoy an ice cold beer in the shade, just keepin' the faith . . . . Food offerings are available but that is not why you come here. This is as close to the old watering holes south Texas used to be known for without actually selling ice out of a machine on the premises. JUst try not to trip as you walk around the place or you may end up with an imprint of "Lone Star" on your forehead.. There are literally thousands of bottle caps covering the premises.

I was in San Antonio helping my daughter move and my wife & I went to La Tuna because it was close. There's two La Tuna businesses that sit right next to each other, nestled in some trees with outside seating, one serves food and the other alcohol. We had brisket tacos and they were excellent. The staff was friendly and our food was ready in only a few minutes. It's a pretty cool spot and worth a visit.

I had dinner at La Tuna after a local described the restaurant to me. Its in the historic Lavaca District of San Antonio, so the area is still being developed and renovated. Don't be put off by some of the sketchier looking places along the way getting there. There were several stray animals wandering around, but they didn't bug customers and the wait staff seemed to be used to their presence. The food was worth it. La Tuna has both indoor and outdoor seating as well as a beer garden across the patio. I had a salad with salmon and it was both humongous and delicious. My friend had a blackened chicken Caesar salad which was also delicious.

This place is great and serves a variety of different delicious favorites! They have live music and serve alcohol. Very relaxing place to go eat and hang out after work for drinks.

La Tuna has an eclectic menu but it's perfect for the Alamo city. February is perfect for enjoying the bounty of the Gulf seafood. Whether you are enjoying gumbo with chicken and andouile sausage or a shrimp poboy; it's all good and reasonably priced. The wait staff is more than capable and always helpful to make you feel like they are happy to see you. This place is great in the summertime (if you can bear the heat of eating under the pecan trees) but has sufficient dining room area inside to stay out of the cold. Progress is abound and stealing the parking lot across the street for a outlandish priced apartment complex but hopefully the owners will be able to keep their oasis. This is one of the River City's great food places; enjoy it while you can.

We had heard about this place from family and decided to try if for lunch. WOW. Don't let the looks of the place turn you away. It's very small inside so plan on going on a nice day when you can enjoy the outside. My husband and I both got the chicken sandwich. Wish we would have chosen different things so that we could have sampled more from the menu. It may have been the best chicken sandwich I have ever eaten. Every plate that was served looked and smelled so good. Can't wait to go back and sample more.

A nice laid back and friendly place. More of variety than a pure Tex-Mex joint. Grilled salmon salad was very tasty and big - couldn't finish it after starting with queso. I might get dressing on the side next time, but it wasn't too heavy. Good salsa too.

Had lunch here with party of four. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Menu was pretty varied for such a small place. Food was great and portions were more than we could complete. Fries were to die for but I had to push my plate away to exercise some self control. Will return next time I am in neighborhood.

Everything I ate here so far has been awesome, and the dessert especially!

The wife and I went here last weekend and had a great time. The cash only thing is a little annoying since it's 2013 and we can clone things and fly to mars, but this little bar can't take credit cards?! Anywho. Staff was very friendly and there was a local country-esque band playing. Good location as it's very close to the Blue Star arts complex. I recommend they install a playground like the Friendly Spot did, that automatically equals more business. Side note, there were a lot of motorcycle enthusiasts there, so be warned if that type of person rubs you wrong for whatever reason.

Two words....fish tacos! The service and food here was outstanding! The only issue with this restaurant is parking which is limited.

Super fun place with a great vibe. Beer and cider with great food and outdoor tables. Family friendly

So we went to La Tuna on a Business lunch the other day. The food that we ordered was amazing with more than enough portion size and fresh ingredients. However there were about 13 of us and we wanted to sit together to watch the football game and eat at the same time. That is where things were a little uncomfortable. We were sitting so tightly together that it was a little difficult to get a bite out of my burger without bumping my co worker with my elbow in the process. I would suggest eat outside which is way more beautiful anyways. If it werent for the game, we would have sat outside and enjoyed the meal a little better. That is the only reason why I am not giving it a 5 star rating. Other than that, great food, good location.

La Tuna is an outside SA ice house selling beer in the bottle. They also have a restaurant serving lunch and dinner from a limited menu. The food is upscale sandwiches and other plates such as fish tacos, etc. I have eaten there many times and have found the food delicious and plentiful. While the food may be common pub type it is upscale. There is seating in the small restaurant and outside in the patio area on wooden tables. The building next door burned down last year and the restaurant was heavily damaged as the fire spread. So the restaurant has been guted and redone now making it much better than before. If you are into handcrafted beer or imported beer, this is not your place. The Blue Star is across the street. This is a SA hangout for the common folk.

Love the outside causual atmosphere to La Tuna. Outside bar. Always great food - love their black bean burger! I love to take out of town guests here to show a different side of San Antonio.

Super service and delicious food. The fish tacos are fresh and delicious, the brisket burger was great as well. The staff caters to requests and substitutions. Inside and outside dining available. Across the street is the Blue Star Arts Complex with nice boutique shopping, restaurants, and it is adjacent to the paved river trail for a pleasant walk.

Great food and atmosphere! Food very tasty and bartender Michael very enjoyable to around! Highly recommend this place

I stumbled on La Tuna while working in San Antonio. What great little funky place. You order your food at the counter then go find a seat in small dining room or out front where they have a few tables on a deck or picnic tables out in the yard. they bring your food out to you. I had the fish tacos which were excellent. Piled high with great trimmings including cabbage. Also tried the nopalitos (cactus) side dish which was a tasty new experience.

Nice place with large outdoor space. There's a stage for a band, picnic tables and large flat rocks (?) to sit on while listening to free live music. There's a window to walk up and order drinks and also a grill that is indoors. Orders are placed inside and then the food is brought to your table. There's seating inside in the air condition but on a Saturday night, no one was inside. Everyone was outside listening to music. There's a small patio by the grill with about 6-8 tables and chairs and ceiling fans. FOOD: sliders were yummy. Fries are really good- seasoned fried. I had the pile of nachos with white beans, guacamole, cheese, etc. I split it with my husband and shared his burger. Nachos were good but the burger was great. The buns are really soft Bacon was really good. It was one of the best burgers we've ever had if not the best.

La Tuna might well be the premier casual, outdoor dining destination in San Antonio. If this were on South Congress in Austin, everyone from Hollywood would be touting it, and ruining it. Most tourists will never find this place and it shows, in that La Tuna features very good value for excellent food. The burgers are big enough for two adults to share, and the awesome cheese fries are among the best I've eaten...and one order can serve four people. You would be wise to split some orders, so you can savor a dessert of bread pudding that beats nine out of ten places that offer it in New Orleans. You can eat indoors if you like but most Texans/Southerners will enjoy the shade of towering pecan trees. Relax and enjoy.

" WOW" you cannot go wrong here, the servers are great and the treat you as though you are part of the family. What more can you ask for. A indoor or outdoor place thats comfortable and pleasant atmosphere and the food is great. Mark is the man and his lovely wife are the best. Everything is good, but that "BURGER IS THE BEST"

Nicest costumer service ever! Food amazing! Two from our group had the fish tacos - outstanding. Definitely a little off the beaten path but worth it.

LOVE this place, comfortable casual atmosphere, very very friendly and helpful staff and the food was perfect! I eat a lot of fish tacos and these are the best I've had. Fish was fresh and plentiful and the tops perfect compliment to the fish. I highly recommend the pickled cactus salad for your side dish, it was excellent.

Super cool Southtown old school ice house. Arrogant wanna-be artsy crowd. Bring you own friends, 'cause you ain't making any here.

Nice casual outdoor restaurant. Great variety of food with big portions. Not much space for parking. However, fast service and there is LaTuna Ice House that you can order your drinks from. Has variety of beers.

We stopped by and were very pleased with our experience. We will return in the near future. The Fish Tacos were GREAT. For under $10 you get two large tacos with unique flavor - some of the best we've ever tasted. The only negative was the acoustics - there were 4 men that were very loud. It's a small restaurant and it was so loud.... but the food & service were great.

This is a great local place. The food is delicious and everyone is super friendly and helpful. We had the fish tacos and they were superb. We were there for lunch and I noticed that everyone around us looked happy to be there. That's always a good sign that you've made a good choice. La Tuna is a great place to have a meal!

Good food, cheap beer and wine (no hard liquor). Try it, you'll like it, but don't expect fine dinning with white table cloth. Very popular with those who know this quaint joint. Outside seating on picnic tables with hanging lights of the trees.

The food is very good but I come for the ambiance. Picnic tables are fabulous, breeze and cold beer round it out. I like the Torta Milanesa, which is the Mexican version of a chicken fried steak sandwich. Very good and had sliced avocado on it.

One of my favourite restaurants in San Antonio. The food is excellent! Their Hamburgers are simply the best! Nachos are excellent and the dessert even better. The place is nice and their staff is always more than friendly. Definetely a most!

A friend brought me here three weeks ago and I'm addicted - been several times since then and have told everyone I know they won't find better food for the price. I've had the mushrooms, fish tacos and fish 'n chips and they are excellent. Large mushrooms, flavored, peppered and fried perfectly with grandma's cream gravy. The Fish Tacos have the perfect seasoning, no "fishy" taste with a good helping and plentiful sides. The Fish 'n Chips are seasoned well, lightly battered and fried to golden brown. My friends have had the salads and burgers and say they are among the best. Alcohol is purchased on the property in the building next door. There is a nice outside seating area under large oak trees if the weather is nice. The inside is not large and the biggest negative is that there is practically no parking on the property and the parking along the street is almost always full. I hear they are working on using the lot of the business behind them - which should significantly improve their flow. The prices are extremely reasonable for the quality and amount of food served. As with a lot of businesses the staff makes the difference, and being a family owned business they treat you like family. I live on the far north side but this place is just to good to not make the drive. I'll be a regular for a long time. If you are disappointed in this place, you should seek psychiatric help

I met some business associates here at their recommendation; they were spot-on. The staff was extremely friendly; went out of their way to make us feel welcomed; like we've been friends for a long time. I had the chicken sandwich and it was perfect. My friends had salmon salads and everything was fresh and delectable. Next time I will order the salmon salad; it looked so inviting. The restaurant is very clean; restrooms too. I love the way this part of downtown had developed, and continues to grow. La Tuna is the perfect spot for a cold beer and some great food.

We were touring the Missions and decided was time for lunch. Not far from Mission Concepcion, we found parking right away. You walk up and order first inside and then find a seat. We ordered the White Chili Nachos, the Chicken Po Boy, and the Chicken fingers. My husband and I shared the nachos, they were delicious. You need to finish eating with a fork because the chili is soaked up by the nachos. My husband could of eaten the whole platter it isn't huge but he was satisfied when he got to finish my daughter's Po Boy. The chicken in the Po Boy was blackened with yummy spices and was very good. And the chicken fingers were a generous portion for my other teenage daughter, nice and crispy too. There is only a few tables inside and it was very busy with locals, but plenty of outdoor seating for when it is nicer out. We would go back again if we were in the neighborhood.

Great food. Just wish that y’all wouldn’t block the beautiful cactus with y’all’s political views. Leave that stuff out of it!!!! Take it down and you will be 5 stars

This is pretty much the place to go on a Friday night, lots of outdoor seating and order at the window food service that is then brought to your table by a server. Decent food, fries are good and fish tacos are pretty much the best around town. Get there early or parking could be trouble especially on the first Friday of the month.

La Tuna Icehouse and La Tuna food are some of the best places to go in San Antonio. The local flavor and culture can't be matched. The traditional icehouse serves cold beer outside under large pecan trees. La Tuna food serves delicious huge portions...the fish tacos, cheesy burger, and steaks are to die for. The pricing is extremely reasonable, if not cheap for the portions and quality. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive. There's not much room inside the restaurant so you may be eating outside....which is great except in the hottest months of summer! La Tuna attracts everyone from football coaches at the local high school to lawyers to artists and hipsters. You can also bring your dog!

The food has a local flavor but is quite eclectic. Tonight I enjoyed the Roasted Lamb Sandwich, it was excellent. Three of us tried to split the Nachos Gueros as a appetizer (what a great dish) but there was enough left over to feed a small army. We dined outside in this 80° San Antonio winter and had couple beers from the ice house. Great food, Great atmosphere.

Fast, friendly and delicious! The varied menu has something for everyone, from nachos to flounder to their wonderful burgers. They are famous for their Cheezy Burger - well named because of 2 cheeses oozing across the top. It is served with delicious battered fries. Order at the counter inside then they deliver your meal to your table. Great place to go with a group! Lots of outdoor seating, and the colored lights strung overhead make night time magical. There is seating indoors as well as a covered patio so you can enjoy eating here regardless of the weather. Parking can be dicey if it's busy, so quickly grab whatever you see in front or across the street in the small lot.

It's been a year since our last visit, and the food is still incredible, the service quick and friendly. We all ordered the steak this time and weren't disappointed. This place is on the return list, permanently.

Got take out for the family. Tried for first time at the recommendation of neighbor. Staff very friendly quick to offer water while we were waiting for our food. Relaxed atmosphere. Large outdoor area with benches and tables shaded by large trees. AC indoor area as well. Fish tacos were delicious - flaky and tender with good flavor. Chicken fried steaks were huge. Recommend the lamb sandwich as well. Overall, relaxed atmo, friendly staff, reasonable prices, great food. Has a kids menu. Only complaint is that parking situation could be better - lucky we live close.

The 3 of us each had the blackened fish tacos with cactus salad on side. We went mid afternoon on a Saturday so services was slow. And I’m still giving it a 5 out of 5 because the food was so good!! The Cactus salad had a nice kick to it

LaTuna is a pretty good place to eat. Most of the items on the menu are larger and filling. I suggest the grilled chicken salad, the trio mini burgers, and of course the fish tacos. Those are awesome!

Informal place with really good food. Order at the counter and they bring the food to you. We almost always get the lamb sandwich even though everything else on the menu is appetizing. Lots of outdoor seating and picnic tables so it's a "go to" place when the weather is nice. If you want a beer you have to go to the icehouse on the other side of the outdoor space. Finding a place to park can be iffy.

Went here after finding out that Stella House was an hour wait. La Tuna was recommended by a local so we thought we would give it a try. We were very happy with the choice. The food was excellent and the prices very reasonable. They offer inside and outside seating. The fried mushrooms are a must. The service was friendly and attentive. The also serve beer and wine.

We went based on the high reviews. My daughter and I ordered the fish tacos. The fish was over cooked and bland. I salted it up with some lime, lots, and I just didn’t really get blown away. My daughter didn’t eat half of hers. My husband ordered the chicken sandwich and gave it 3/5. My son got a torta 4/5. We also ordered nachos and they were good. On the bright side, the staff was very attentive and friendly.

Really BIG and tasty burgers, cold beer and iced tea make this a cool place to enjoy. Laid-back vibe - even for San Antonio. Great place to admire some nicely tricked-out choppers as it is very popular with bikers. Fish & chips is quite tasty as well. Small indoor space, but lots of picnic tables under the trees with beer garden atmosphere. Really nice when that hot Texas sun starts to go down.

I don't have a picture of it, but believe me, the burger and the wings are awesome. I also got the sweet tea. I was starving at first but once i finished my meal i didn't have to go for dinner cause the burger was enough for my stomach.

If you want a laid back location with a variety of beers and plenty of shade, you will enjoy this place.

This place might be my favourite thing about San Antonio. On a three day business trip I ate here three times. Large, delicious portions and very attentive, down to earth service. The manager seemed great. On Friday night there was a long queue but the food came quickly and the vibe outside was fun.

My husband & I went to La Tuna for the first time on Nov.11,2017. We were unable to enter the restaurant because of our inability to climb stairs on that particular day. The only ramp we could find lead to a locked door (only accessible to deliveries, I guess). The website indicated La Tuna was "accessible". We went next door to the icehouse; asked the bartender if there was an entrance with a ramp. She said "No", only the stairs and "Sorry". No offer to take an order and have someone bring it outside to the picnic tables. No worries, we left and ate somewhere else. Had a great time anyway!

Pretty good food - feels a little "hole in the wall-ish." Limited seating indoors - best to visit during a cooler time of year.

Great food, great atmosphere, great service. I really enjoyed this place. Lots of cyclists and people just hanging out.

Great food, outside seating, friendly and helpful staff. Parking is the only thing that is difficult, other than that a great gem.

I was at SA for the weekend and a family member rented an apartment in South Town, looking through the window we saw this patio full of people like having a picnic with a cold beer in a hot afternoon so we walked to the patio and it was a little restaurant with amazing food at the back. They don't serve beer but it has a beer bar in the same patio which has the same name but operates separately. So if you want something different in a hot afternoon in the south downtown to SA grab a beer and some fish tacos are the best.

Great salads, burgers, and much more. Large portions. Quick service. Our party was very impressed. Outdoor bar available - no alcohol inside main restaurant.

I can’t believe I waited so long to visit this restaurant as long as I’ve been living in S.A. Service was exceptional, food was delicious and price was totally worth it. My husband picked this restaurant for Father’s Day and I’m so glad he did. We got there right around 2pm on a Saturday so they had just opened. Atmosphere was inviting and plenty of outdoor seating!

Awesome food and drink, the people are nice. The atmosphere and entertainment is great. FYI: Women - don't wear heels.

I love La Tuna. The food, the atmosphere, the beer. La Tuna has moved into one of our standards when out and about. Located near Southtown, it's got great outdoor seating and after a fire, a newer inside. They do NOT have servers so you have to order at the counter but the food more than makes up for that. I love their beer battered fish and fries. I think they have super fish tacos and their burgers are awesome. My wife is a vegatarian and they have a homemade bean burger she craves. Best of all... best Bread Pudding outside of the Big Easy. They also share an outside space with La Tuna beer shake. Super cool! Only knock, closed on Sunday and open for dinner only on Sat. Check it out... you will not be disappointed!

I went to lunch with a friend I hadn't seen in over 50 years. Her daughter Anna & Diane took such giis care of us. Although the food was excellent, it paled compared to the friendly service, smiles, stories and surroundings. If you visit San Antonio or live there & haven't been, you're missing so much. What are you waiting for?

Cool and trendy place with outdoor seating near the King William trendy neighborhood. The food is OK/average but very over priced for what you get. The service barely qualified for "average". Probably won't go again unless someone else is paying.

We went to La Tuna with a group of friends and everyone loved it. The food quality is great for a restaurant attached to a beer garden. There was a good crowd of what seemed to be regulars. Nice patio under a canopy of trees on nice days v

I went here on Saturday, Sept 13, for a late lunch, they opened at 2pm. Shared half of a fried chicken patty sandwich which was plenty for me...the fried mushroom appetizers were humongous! Dipped in the ranch dressing they just melted in my mouth. The perfect accompaniment to the Light Blonde Shiner beer I had at the bar that sits across the yard. The bar is open earlier than the restaurant and you can sit outside under the shade of the pecan trees. They sell all sorts of beer, was really surprised and delighted to find they had the Light Blonde Shiner beer...Light Done Right!

Great place for people who enjoy a casual, fun and artistic place with good food. We had the special of the day which was a chicken salad sandwich with bacon. The whole sandwhich was delish and the bacon was awesome! The side salad was tossed with a sweet balsamic dressing that had us guessing at the ingredients. You can sit outside or inside but outside is the hippist part to be seated . The waiters were fast and polite! Can't wait to take my friends here!

Nice little restaurant with outside and inside eating area. Mushrooms and dip are very nice. Great selections of beers.

We have driven by this place for years but had never stopped--What a mistake!!!! Even though the interior looks a bit spare--the food is anything but!!! Huge portions of wonderful food. Their coleslaw was quite interest and different--shredded cabbage, cilantro, red onion and a light vinaigrette. Quite Tasty. The fries we so delicious as were each of our entrees. I expected burgers but that's not what I found there. The waitress knew it was our first time so she showed us different entrees as she passed our table while delivering them. The salads are more than adequate and looked quite tasty. Our drinks were always refilled before they were empty--made us all quite happy. Members of our party ordered the shrimp po boy, grilled portabello sandwich and the black bean burger. Everyone was more than satisfied with their choices. Although this place was not crowded when we were there, there were lots of tables indoors, on the covered deck, and in a patio area.

I'm Italian so I don't really love too much fried food but la tuna it's a really nice place with pretty good food...a little oasis where you can relax even if you are in the middle of a city

This is a great place to hangout with your adult friends. The ground is covered with beer caps and the ambiance is just relaxing. The inside dining is very small area because mostly an outdoor restaurant. The food is excellent. I had the mushroom sandwich. It was very good. Great place just to hangout with friends.

My wife and I visited La Tuna on a recent first Friday. Needless to say it was packed and the food line was quite long, but it was worth the wait. The portions were huge and quite tasty. We will be back, just not on a first Friday. (For those who don't know the first Friday of each month brings huge crowds of people to the King William district of San Antonio. It is fun but very very crowded so be prepared to wait.)

There hasn't been a time we have visited San Antonio that we haven't made a stop at La Tuna. This restaurant never disappoints.

We were on the River Walk looking for the Lone Star Brewery. Apparently the brewery closed and our thirst needed to be quenched so we went towards the neon lights. Fantastic find. Food part was closed so we got beers. $3 beers with all locals. 60's music on point!

Very San Antonio. Typical small selection of beer only. Food is just ok if you're into fried bar food. Dirty and populated by the usual class of SAers. The Fragile ego type who will hit on you in front of your husband then make derogatory comments to you in barley literate Southsider Spanish when they realize you're with a white guy. There are a lot of bars like this all over town and quite a few with better patrons.

Sat outside and enjoyed a nice evening with great food. Bringing out black lab was a bonus. I had their special, Beef Brisket Tacos with a guacamole and my husband had the fish tacos. The variety of beers made our decision difficult as there were many of our favorites. Will definitely be back. Forgot to mention the bottlecaps!!!

Excellent fish tacos. Lots of food! My husband loved the lamb sandwich. They gave us a sample of the pickled cactus. Yummy. I loved sitting outside under the trees.

Off the beaten path on Probandt, a fabulous outdoor venue. Don't wear your Sunday best....this is a get down, have some beer or wine, unpretentious, under the trees, good music , great food location that doesn't break the bank. Inside is clean, efficient and polite. Outdoors is..well its outdoors. Beer is Ice Cold! Served fast...CASH ONLY. I had the fish and chips....very good, hot flaky, affordable. The fries rocked, the slaw was tasty. My friend had the Asaigo Tilapia...and didn't say hardly a word after the first bite was taken! People seemed happy to be here just hanging out! Lots of laughter....that's always cool :) Highly recommended.

Had dinner with a family of 5 on May the 4th. First time for all except one, very tasty food, reasonably priced, quick service. This place have no servers, so you go thru a line to order, pick up a number and sit down. They have a large garden/patio and a bar on the same property . It was a pretty day so we sat outside on picnic tables( some of them had bird poop on them). It was a very nice atmosphere, would recommend this place. I couldn't understand why there was no soap in men's restroom though ( no dispenser at all).

Perfect spot to take the family on a weekend for lunch. Usually have a band, and the food is always really good and fresh. Plenty of outside seating and great selection of beers. Perfect spot to relax.

We enjoyed our lunch yesterday. Al Fresco dining on picnic tables on a warm afternoon BEFORE the rains hit. Delicious fish tacos...FRESH lively flavors. Equally good the lamb sandwich served with un sweet ice tea. Other than being unable to get a re fill on the tea... OUTSTANDING restaurant and high recommendations

As the saying goes...you get what you pay for and that is exactly how I feel about the $12 chicken salad sandwich I enjoyed at La Tuna Grill. It was a mid-week lunch special. There was soooooooo much chicken salad crammed between the toasted wheat bread, it was difficult to get my hands around it and WOW was it really very good! Arrived here around 1130a on a weekday and the place was empty, but upon leaving an hour later, there wasn't a seat open, inside or outside! Orders are placed and paid for at the counter, but a server does bring the food to the table.

Freights rolling by, bicycle polo across the street, bottle caps carpeting the whole area, party lights strung between live oaks, fire pit on a cool South Texas evening, chill staff playing swell music, no dueling pianos. La Tuna rocks it for the best place to grab a brew in San Antonio.

La Tuna is a bit out of town but well worth a visit. Its a great place to sit outside and have a beer (they have a wide selection of craft beers) and is the type of plpace that the San Antonio locals go to. Outside of the part that sells the beer the ground is covered in old bottle tops which is a little bizarre but adds real character, The food was god too. I had the Shrimp PO Boy which was real good. If you're happy to head away from the Riverwalk then this place is totally worth it.

If you are in the Blue Arts district in S.A. stop by across the street at La Tuna. The fish taco's are brilliant. The chips and queso, ok but not outstanding. The chips were a bit on the stale side and the cheese was pretty salty. But hey, the food is grand and the service is friendly. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the chef knows how to put together some good tastes and flavors.

Hard by the railroad tracks, in the shadow of a Lone Star Brewery, and far from the strolling tourists a couple miles over on the Riverwalk. La Tuna is all urban grit and authenticity. Get your fabulous fish tacos and Pacifico at the walk up, corrugated tin bar. Grab a table in the yard under the trees strung with bare bulbs, kick your shoes off, wait for the occasional breeze to take the south Texas heat away, and forget where you are until well into the evening. Although this is a grown up place, it doesn't mean the parents from the neighborhood can't or don't bring their kids. It's that sort of social gathering spot. Esquire magazine said it best in naming it to its Best Bars in America list some years ago: "No liquor. No credit cards. No pretense. No more than you need. Just a simple, small icehouse on the south side of downtown San Antonio, near the rundown railroad tracks and not much else. You go to La Tuna because it's nice out and you want to get a buzz going before the sun goes down. You drink cheap, cold beer and gather at the two dozen or so picnic tables beneath the shade of towering pecan trees. Rusted bottle caps crinkle like seashells underfoot, indicating the way to the walk-up bar. Bartenders add each night's beer tops to the gravel landscape, like anteing chips to an ever-building poker pot." Read more: http://www.esquire.com/bestbars/bb-LaTuna#ixzz1YSQErRgE

Absolutely love this place. Great food and great ambiance. Prices are reasonable. My favorite are the fried mushrooms or their salads. Very relaxing, great place to unwind after a long work day.

Husband and wife team put a lot of time, energy and love into their hip little restaurant. No frills here, the focus is on the food. You stand in line to place your order, find your seat and they bring you your food when its ready. Small place so indoor seating is very limited, so get there early. The tables are a bit crowded together inside, but plenty of tables outside, under the big oak trees. Just keep in mind that in the hot summer even in the shade it can be uncomfortably warm. Good fresh food, with something for everyone. I've had several options but the fish tacos are my favorite, and plenty big. Off the beaten path, on the outskirts of downtown and King William area, right next to a railroad track. A little gem that you'll be glad you found, and likely return to if you're a local.

This place is where locals come to enjoy a burger or fish tacos with beer. There are two parts to this establishment: 1) La Tuna Grill has a small menu and they are known for their burgers and fish tacos!!! These two items are great. They do accept credit cards. 2) La Tuna Ice House is a small outside bar that serves only beer. They only accept cash and all of their beer is bottled. If you want some special beer do not go here. They have the usuall beers. These two establishments share an outside picnic area that you can relax under that large trees. Please note that this is not an UPSCALE place but a nice get away from the tourist. I highly recommend it!!

Great ice house atmosphere. Good pub food and outdoor digs. Super crowded on 1st Friday - go any other time.

Looking for something different in SA and a friend of mine recommended "La Tuna", All I have to say was "Thanks for the recommendation!" Great food, great service and great prices. Be sure to be hungry because the portions are huge! So if you want a change of scenery check out this joint at South SA.

Backing on to the Blue Star arts complex, this was one of the true highlights of our trip and the staff was so helpful in walking us through the best choices on the menu. It looks as though most of what they make sells out on busy days (as is the case with all the best BBQs in Texas), but I think it’s impossible to be disappointed. We shared life- (and waist-size) altering bowl of spicy, creamed, bacon corn chowder soup, fish tacos and chicken-fried pork with a sweet sauce that had me licking my fingers and my chops near-off! The bar is also pretty great, but a separate business, and the seating area is common and very lively!

Local place with local flair! Beer bottle caps litter the ground around the outside bar, which is separate from the restaurant. Outside dining, wonderful brisket taco special, inexpensive wine, and large pecan trees to shade the tables. What a gem on the south side of downtown San Antonio! I will be back....

Having moved into the Southtown area this past summer, my husband and I are having a great time getting to know the local establishments. So many choices! Still, we find ourselves often returning to La Tuna. Among our choices: Fish tacos (two to an order) are superb with ample blacked fish, slaw, and sauce. I always take one home. Try the house dressing on your accompanying salad. Delicious. My husband is a burger aficionado and the cheesy burger is one of his new favorites. Cooked perfectly, juicy, cheesy (as the name suggests) and a delicious bun. All that and the burger maintains "structural integrity" while you eat it. To him, a very important feature. Make sure to check out the specials board. Recently, the posole verde was featured and it was perfect. Just the right amount of heat, thick and filling on San Antonio's first chilly day. Whether you eat inside our outside, you'll find great service from the friendly staff. Grab a beer from the Icehouse and enjoy!

Great food without high prices or pretense Deserts are great

We went to La Tuna as a family the other niight. There was live music outside and friendly service all around. The loaded French fries were fantastic. Crisp and sprinkled with thick chunks of crunchy bacon. I had the Milanesa sandwich which was tasty and accompanied with a delicioous salad. Other recommended menu items are the lamb or ribeye sandwiches. We'll be back again.

This was recommended to us by another couple. Took a bit of searching to find, but boy was it worth looking for! This gem will be a repeat for us on travel trips to San Antonio. Meals were big, go hungry, but the price was right on. Everything was made fresh. We had chicken fried steak, the NY strip, steak sandwich, grilled cheese, and chicken sandwich. All of it was wonderful! I got black cherry bread pudding to go and was not disappointed with that either. Seriously, some of the best eating! Staff was super friendly and attentive.

One of San Antonio's standbys. Has been around forever it seems. If you like the, sitting around the backyard with friends having a few beers, this place is for you. Ice cold beers and picnic tables. Love it.

The first time I came here was to see The Number 3 Dinners perform. It's a fun hangout, even when it's crowded during First Friday. I've only eaten once there and liked it.

I visited San Antonio for business and one of our host recommended to go to La Tuna before heading to the Spurs game in the evening. All I wanted was a typical place, not too fancy, with good food and good beer. Well I definitely got that with this place. Being European, it was nice to be able to sit outside in February, the weather was really good and they have a very large outside space. The food is very typical southern food, and I am not sure how they deep fry their batter but it is not greasy at all!! I had battered jumbo shrimps which were very nice and tasty. The selection of beer is fantastic and not too expensive. Really good. What was weird is that close to the bar, the floor is covered of beer cap which reminded me of times when I would walk by the beach on small pebbles or shells. Interesting but that add to the authenticity of the place. I definitely recommend!!!

very cool for summer hangouts and they have movies outside -bring your dog

$2.50 Saturday 2 p.m. beer specials! Yes please! Parking was the only not fun thing, however, we were able park on the street next to the bar/restaurant. The bar has a $20.50 mandatory credit card charge. If you purchase something under the $20.50, they give you the rest back in change. We did not eat, however......the food looked and smelled amazing! Prices were good for Southtown/Downtown! My wife and I are already planning a Hooky Day to go and eat and drink here!

i can't say much for their food though. do they even serve food Edward wonders.

This is a cool place to hang out. The food was good, not the best but the atmosphere is what makes it fun. Tons of people sat outside under the shade trees just hanging out, eating and drinking. Several had dogs which is a plus for me, I love places where my dogs can join me! The cheese and bacon covered fries were really tasty.
Enjoyable Evening With Friends
It had been a few years since we had eaten here, but went for dinner as three couples. I am eating healthier than last visit, so had a steak and veggies. Some of our party had chicken fried steaks (my favorite in years past), one had fish and chips and another the jumbo shrimp. My steak was very well prepared and the veggies were seasoned well. We all agreed that this was a meal we would like to repeat in the future. The service is actually much better than we expected, with attention to our needs. After dining, we went outside for a drink in the comfortable if rustic setting. There is nothing fancy at all about this place, so go hungry and relaxed.
