Outstanding in every way!!

By Bob M |

Started at the bar waiting for another couple. Excellent wines and good atmosphere. After being seated, they had an excellent wine selection. Cousin got a vegetable soup that was out of this world. For my entree, I ordered the salmon with spinach and mushrooms. The meal was delivered with 2 good size pieces of salmon, with hearty helpings of spinach and mushrooms. Server was attentive and helpful.

Great service, good food

The service here was attentive and professional. The food was good but for some reason it seemed underwhelming.

50th Birthday

By Matthew W |

The perfect venue for a River front view over looking a marina with Campbell's Park in the background. We had a party with 30+ family and friends and everyone raved about it. The upstairs dinning was a great combination of insde and outside which created a relaxed atmoshere. It all begins with the staff and Angelo was the best! The food was fabulous and the wait staff courteous, friendly and accomodating. It has only been two weeks since the party and several attendees have already returned to La Veranda for another great meal. Thank you to all the staff at La Veranda with special thanks to Angelo! Traditional Italian

By Laura L |

The hotel staff recommended this restaurant and we were glad. Very traditional, good food and good service. We enjoyed the wine, espresso and appetizers. The entrées were delicious with good sized portions. Did not order dessert, but am sure it would have been very good as well

Fantastic Meal

Excellent service. Food was well-prepared, very good, and reasonably priced . Poor selection of beer.

Another Nice View

By Nextadventure2014 |

La Veranda is on the Delaware River so ask for a table by the water. We especially liked this restaurant because it was across from where we were staying at the Holiday Inn Express. Friendly staff and good lunch. We had the Pasta E Fagiolil soup and the Insalata Pazza; spinach salad with Gorgonzola. Perfect lunch on a chilly day.

Great

By Ken P |

OK, I never trust negative reviews when a person has only done one review. Axe to grind? So glad I ignored the few terrible reviews. Staff is overly friendly and welcoming. They are ITALIAN. You expect that. Had the special for an appetizer. It was a seafood puff pastry wrapped in Octopus. How do you tell a great restaurant? For me--how they prepare Octopus. This was tender and flavorful. App was fantastic. Had seared tuna for main course. Served with bacon wrapped shrimp. Proteins were all fantastic and well flavored. Vegetables were fresh and tender-crisp. Perfect presentation and execution. Table leg was uneven. Table wobbled. That was my only negative. They fixed it! Beautiful setting.

Wonderful Italian with a water view!

By David S |

Our entire family enjoyed a wonderful Italian meal with great service. We highly recommend the veal saltimboca and veal fungi (mushrooms). Our sons both had chicken parmagana and highly recommend it. You can enjoy your meal and watch all the Duck Boats go up and down the Delaware River.

Say hello to the wonderful man as you walk throught the door!

The gentleman at the door made me feel like I was back in Italy. I was alone looking for a coffee and a treat. The bar keeper was going to serve someone else but this gentleman said no this lady need attention now. He knew I was staying at a nearby lodging and was willing to take care of me for the weekend. My family went back to eat there for lunch. He remember me and called me neighbor. I felt so welcome.

Penns landing

Got a nice table overlooking the river and piers. Good menu, little pricey but it is good italian food. I had the $20 lunch special. Salad, entree and dessert. Good deal! Nice place if you are in the penns landing area.

Loved this place

By PASANDYBAY |

We stumbled upon this place by the Waterfront . A lot of the restaurants didn’t open until 4:00 . It is a beautiful place with a view of the boats and water. Peter was a great waiter and put up with us and the changes we made. The bread was great as was the comp. Bruschetta. My friend and I split the Chicken Piccante. We loved it - one of the best meals we have had. Would definitely go there again.

Good Italian restaurant

By geddyupgo |

We generally stop here for dinner when in Philly for the July 4th Welcome America celebration at Penn's Landing and it never fails to give us an enjoyable evening. The restaurant has background music that thankfully is never so loud as to interfere with conversation. The river view is somewhat limited by adjacent buildings but the interior is tastefully decorated so the limited view is not an extreme distraction. We started the meal with appetizers that were quite good - the Prosciutto Melon and Cheese and the Antipasto Delia Casa, For our entre, my companion ordered the Ossobuco Con Funghi E Piselli and said it was very well prepared and absolutely delicious. I had the All' Arrabbiata, which was quite good although the penne was a tad too al dente for my personal taste.. We capped the meal with a white mousse cream cake, Another excellent trip to Philly and a great meal.

A Great Secret in Philly

By DDMofNJ |

It's hard to believe not more people know about this place. I've been there several times over the past two years and each time the place wasn't over crowded. I've been there in the summer months and sat outside on the dock, it's nice view of the marina and the bridge, but you have to keep in mind your outside, so don't mind the seagulls. The staff always treated me and my guests well. From the valets, the front end bar, the host to the wait staff. I've never had a bad experience. Maybe once the service was a bit on the slower side, but it wasn't terrible. The best part was the food. One of my favorites is the grilled calamari. Even though it's an Italian restaurant, the steaks are out of this world. If you're not sure what you want, tell the waiter what type of food you like and let him order for you. I did this twice, and both times he was on the mark.

Lovely Waterfront Dining

By Laurie C |

My husband and I visited this waterfront gem recently, with another couple, and were surprised to find it nearly empty on a Friday night. We were seated at a table near the window with a spectacular view of the marina and the Ben Frankin Bridge. Our waiter was very attentive and had an easy manner- never rushed. We had a grilled veg appetizer for the table that was good, but could have been served hotter. I had the sausage and broccoli rabe which was prepared perfectly. It was a huge plate of tender, garlicky broccoli rabe with the grilled sausages arranged on top. I felt like it needed some pasta to balance the dish. My husband had the lamb chops and our friends had seafood entrees which were good, but not outstanding. In summary, I would say go there for a lovely dining experience , stick to the Italian dishes. You can't go wrong!

Never had a bad Meal here.

By RoadHogGreenville |

One item that you seldom see on the menu is what they call their "salted fish". It's a white fish that is basted with a slurry of salt and water mix and backed. NO. It is NOT salty. When they bring it to your table they take a spoon and crack the salt off and away from the fish. Amazing. ANY veal dish. Mostly Italian style food but great.

Best Dining after a night at the Ballet

By Robert H |

Normally, My wife and I try to stay "local" after a performance at our favorite theatre venue in Center City Philadelphia. This time however, we chose a short cab ride to La Veranda on Columbus Ave at Penns landing. This was one of the best choices we ever made. The host is very friendly, you are seated promptly, and there is not a bad seat in the house. Situated dockside on the Delaware River, you get a wonderful view and your menu choice is incredible. There are choices for pasta, beef, veal, chicken and seafood. "Try the stuffed Veal Chop" you will not be disappointed. they also have a great selection for both an anti-pasta or other interesting appetizers . If you want to have dinner at a very special place, try La Veranda, you will not regret it.

Friendly service, good food

By Lovezubrus |

Came for lunch on a Thursday. We were literally the only table until almost the end of our meal when one other table came in. It looks very fancy inside and has nice waterfront views. We were able to choose whichever seat we wanted. The server and manager were both extremely friendly and attentive. There is no valet parking because it isn't really necessary at lunch time so you can just park out front. The valet parking sign is still displayed though which I found confusing but my Dad didn't think it was a big deal and he knew to pay no attention to the sign. If you are a first timer, though, I think it's confusing. There were a lot of lunch specials. We had buffalo mozzarella with arugula and a balsamic glaze. It was ok. It was kind of bland and the arugula was pretty bitter. I've had better elsewhere. They served a basket of breadsticks and they were literally burnt so I was surprised they served them to us. Also pretty flavorless. I got the classic Regina pizza which was very delicious. Light and thin so it didn't bog me down and make me feel super full. The crust had good flavor. My Dad got Veal which he enjoyed. We did not get dessert. I would return!

Traditional Italian by the river.

By LagunaGuy |

Very good food in a beautiful riverside setting. I would particularly recommend the grilled calamari appetizer. The roasted red peppers were also good. The osso buco was very good. Service was attentive without being overbearing.

DISGUSTING PLACE

By Luca B |

Food was disgusting, and the manager very unprofessional smoking cigarettes near the main entrance door and immediately showed us to our table, he smelled disgustingly. The only thing our waiter if I'm not mistaken the name and Pine! good service DISGUSTING FOOD

*** Gangster like Atmosphere ** Notaplace for a family or romance

By zonveri60 |

I have been to the restaurant twice.. the atmosphere is very thug, "gangster" like in atmosphere... from the valet guys (Not professional at all" ) to the poor service at the bar while we waited for over an hr for a table. Not a recommended restaurant....

Beautiful view

By Robin S |

We happened into this place while enjoying Penn's Landing. There were few people there for lunch, which concerned me. I had nothing to fear! The gnocchi was perfectly prepared and the squash was much better than the usual side dish. The river view helped create a perfect lunch.

Still one of the best restaurants in Philly.

By Michael T |

La Veranda is waterfront fine dining in Philly. This was always a favorite of our family and it was still great. I ordered off of their special dinner selection. Choice of appetizers which I selected the melon prosciutto and cheese which was large and delicious. Choice of 4 main courses which I ordered a NY Strip steak done to perfection (which rivaled the steak I got at The Capitol Grill last week) grilled vegetables (awesome) and potatoes. Choice of desert which I selected Cannolis which were 2 large ones that were as good as Termini Bakery. All of this for only $35. Waterfront dining with a piano player next to our table made for an awesome evening. The branzino baked in a salt shell and filleted tableside got rave reviews also. Everyone also raved about the roasted peppers they brought out, so good we ordered seconds. The service could not have been any better. For almost a third of what our meal was at The Capitol Grille last week, I enjoyed my meal at La Veranda better. Plus, we didn't have other diners on top of us so it was a quiet romantic setting if you are looking a date night restaurant. Definitely 5 stars. Great job to the entire staff.

Good food on the river

By etradervic |

For Dinner for a party of six, service was prompt and courteous. I had the ribeye which was delicious and cooked perfectly. I sampled my partners Veal Martini, a large veal chop, which was also very good. The bartender was capable of starting the evening right with a very good Old Fashioned. The only items that were a bit off were the apps and desserts which were just ok. Otherwise, La Veranda would be 5 stars.

Sweet 16 at La Veranda

By DocGlo2013 |

We attended a Sweet Sixteen party for our granddaughter on Oct. 2, 2016. The restaurant experience was wonderful from the time we walked through the door. The staff was so welcoming and accommodating. The building was a former docking area along the Delaware River. The interior ambience is spectacular! This and the beautiful river views. We had a section of the restaurant all to ourselves. The wait staff is very cordial and were quite willing to adapt the individually ordered meals. The food from appetizers all the way through was delicious. The drinks were expertly made as ordered. A specialty cake was brought in by her parents and the staff was great at serving the cake and singing Happy Birthday. Parking could be an issue, but valets were right out front for a minimal charge. The menu had a wide range of choices. I ordered sea bass and asked that it be fileted before it was brought to the table-- voila!! delicious and no bones. My husband chose Italian and loved it. With a group like ours the choices were varied and there were NO complaints. A memorable evening. We will return.

Outstanding Food with Amazing Views

By AimeeB8 |

Was looking to eat on the water. Read reviews on TripAdvisor. The restaurant has an outstanding outdoor deck area surrounded by boats and views of the George Washington Bridge. Homemade Gnocchi was outstanding with the meat sauce. They have two other options as well. We enjoyed the Veal Piccata with angel hair pasta. Salads were nice size for $8. Wonderful bruschetta served to start.

Family meal.

By Trevor K |

When visiting this restaurant, it was Mother's day in America, so this made the restaurant very busy. The location on Penn's Landing is beautiful and we found both the food and service very good, although a little expensive.

Slow, slow, slow

By AuntieFlo |

We came for lunch during the Fishtown, Northern Liberties, Penn's Landing Restaurant Week. Maybe that was the problem. It seemed as though as soon as we asked for the restaurant week menu, everyone lost interest. There was only one other couple when we arrived. We received water, bruschetta and bread quickly, but after that, everything was slow, slow, slow. We waited at least 10-15 minutes for salad. The dressing was excellent but at the beginning of August, the tomatoes should have been beautifully ripe and flavorful Jersey tomatoes but they were just like the tomatoes you get in cello packs in February. We waited at least 15 minutes for entrees. By that time, there were 2 other tables of diners. For as long as we waited for the entrees, they were not hot, they were just warm. The veggies and roasted potatoes were very good but the chicken Marsala was just ok. We waited another 10-15 minutes for dessert which wasn't anything spectacular. I had to ask for the check 3 times, yes, 3 times! The dining room is nice, there's a nice view of the river but the excruciating slow service ruined my dining experience.

Worst Meal Ever 12.31.19

By Len S |

Worst meal experience I have ever had. The appetizer was crab cake (2), which were palatable; however, the size was pathetic, they were the actual size of a half dollar coin, diameter and width (not kidding). Cesar salad was presented next. That was basically some shredded romaine lettuce, a few croutons thrown on top with a slight dusting (being generous here) of Parmesan cheese (where was the lemon juice, olive oil, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon and black pepper?). The entree was surf & turf; filet was the ONLY saving grace, tasty, but the lobster was under cooked and barely bigger than the 6 oz. filet, no need to say anymore here. The accompanying sides were baby carrots (only 3, really?!) and a table spoon portion of mashed potatoes. Lastly the dessert, which was chocolate cake, tasted like failed attempt at flourless cake. If I could have given La Veranda a quarter (.25) of a star I would have and that would have been being generous.

Not the same

By ginahWD |

Years ago we would enjoy La Veranda for special occasions and events - it was a special place for us. When we had friends visiting from Florida who had never been to Philadelphia, we thought it would be nice to eat here. We wanted them to enjoy the elegance and water view. While the room was very pretty, the view of the bridge lovely, the service was very attentive...we were so disappointed in the food. The food was nothing more than diner food - seriously...chicken marsala, chicken & veal parm...exactly as you would get at a diner. I really wish I could have a do over and take them someplace else - so disappointed.

Hope they last!

By Wayne-Librarian |

With great views of the river, a lovely interior, excellent service, tasty wine list, and great food, we thought this place would be busy on a Friday night. It was almost empty. We walked there, but perhaps its location on the river side of the boulevard discourages some. Perhaps it is busier in summer when there is (I hope) more foot traffic along the river. In any case, we had a lovely experience at a moderate price.

Nice view

By MeraKi25 |

The view from their outdoor seating is really nice, and all the wait staff was very friendly. Food looked lovely, but was just OK.

Great food, great atmosphere, great view!

By Matt K |

It's ashame to see all the bad experiences here. I just ate here for my second time and have no complaints. The pasta was superb and the service was impeccable. Every employee was very friendly and willing to help. The dessert (we had the cheesecake) was the only negative as it tasted like it had been in the fridge for a while and was not freshly prepared. Otherwise, it has great waterfront dining and classic Italian recipes cooked perfectly.

Excellent food but very slow service

By KandALincs |

We were here in a group to celebrate a work anniversary and we had good expectatons. Orders were taken and the appetisers were delivered and duly demolished (bruschetta was a little hard, but tasty) but there seemed to be a very long wait to get everyone's food, as it was delivered in batches. This wouldn't usually be an issue but there was a good 10 minutes between the first and the last starter being delivered to the table. The same happened with the main courses and as we were all trying to eat at the same time, this was frustrating to say the least. When the mains were all on the table, some were cold, some due to having to wait around for colleagues meals to arrive and some were delayed coming from the kitchen. Eventually we all got to eat and the food was delicious. Unfortunately the little basics like water and drink refills were very slow and sporadic and the waiting staff had to be asked more than a couple of times for water refills. The plates were cleared away and the desserts ordered, along with coffees etc. I ordered a coffee at the time of the desserts and although some arrived at the table, mine wasn't one of them, even when the waitress was asking to whom they belonged, she obviously didn't hear me explain that they were ours. I asked the waitress again for the coffee about 5 or 10 minutes later but again, no coffee was delivered. The delay in serving at the same time happened again with the desserts, so by the time mine finally arrived, everyone else had finished and was getting ready to leave. My dessert was left half-eaten, as it was so late, I didn't get the chance to eat it - added to that, I never actually got the coffee that I had ordered over 20/25 minutes previously. As I was a designated driver, I was relying on that to keep me awake for a few more hours so I was left pretty unimpressed by this shortfall in the service. Whilst I appreciate that we were a large group (we had booked well in advance), this was no excuse for such slow and sporadic service. There were plenty of waiting staff and on a few occasions, found the time to chat amongst themselves. The restaurant wasn't busy and apart from us, there were only a couple of other tables occupied, so I can't think of any reason for the delays. In summary, great food but the service was very slow, so I probably wouldn't recommend this place for that reason.

Disappointing

By jean m |

Old friends gather monthly to try new dining experiences. This adventure was not great. The service was very good, venue clean and nice views. Food bland. The veal picante was served luke warm. Presentation unimaginative and pasta was over cooked . Plus the veal was tough. The best items were bread & fried mushrooms. A companion said her ravioli was good. No really rave comments. Sorry. Have cocktails and appetizers on the deck for starters. Then look for better entrees elsewhere.

So-so

By 198993 |

I was really looking forward to dining at this restaurant. It was father's day, and we had an early reservation for 7 people at 5:30. The maitre'd was very accommodating and we assumed we were in for a fine experience. We ordered a nice wine, were seated outside, and were treated exceptionally. However, after we placed our order, we waited over an hour for our food. This would not have been a terrible thing if we didn't have kids with us who were starving and if the restaurant was crowded. But there were maybe two other tables that had guests, and that is is. When the food finally came, it was good. The bronzino, which was $42 (yowza!) was delicious. The side dish of roasted potatoes and green beans was just ok. The seafood risotto was excellent. My sister in law ordered a side of vodka penne in addition to her entree after the entree came, and they delivered it 20 minutes later, pasta practically uncooked. Not sure what is happening in the kitchen at La Veranda, but the slow service was inexcusable. I will not return.

Un-engaging, Almost Disinterested Service, Which Improved During Our Stay

By CharlieinTexas |

Dropped in for a drink at the bar to escape the rain. I thought we were invisible at first, took 5+ minutes for the staff to acknowledge our presence. Ordered wine, tequila, and ice tea. All good, fair price. No conversation offered by the bar tender. But, when my wife asked for a club soda and our friend asked for an ice tea refill, they were graciously provided at no add'l charge. Pretty venue. View of the water. Very business-like approach, not unfriendly, but not the least bit engaging. we were not committed to a dinner place. No reason to eat here after the bar experience. Odd, frankly.

WONDERFUL!!!!

By Rebecca A |

I went here for the first time with friends the other day and had a spectacular meal. The location is perfect, the service was impeccable and the new chef is an absolute genius. Every bite was divine. My only complaint is that I did not have a big enough appetite to try EVERYTHING on the menu. I intend on going back as soon as I get the chance. Truly wonderful dining experience.

Overrated

By PeteBlueBell |

Had dinner today (9/10/14). I was disappointed by the quality of food. My wife and I ordered Caesar salad. It was mostly chopped lettuce, lots of grated cheese dry dressing and no garnish. Looked like a diners special. I ordered broiled seafood combination ($30.). Tuna was not seared, but sautéed and very dry, same with salmon. The rest of the platter was just OK. When the waiter saw the left over tuna and salmon, he agreed with me that they overcooked the fish. No apology from anyone. My wife's veal and asparagus was good. Waiter and other staff were friendly. BTW, we were the only 2 people there between 5:30 to 6:30.

Disappointing

By seasilver |

Bottom line the food is just OK, I could cook the same at home, just minus the water view! There where 10 people in our party, we ordered many appetizers, pasta dishes for the main and chicken and veal... everyone agreed the food did not meet our expectations after reading the reviews. The service is very good, and yes the restaurant has a coveted spot on the pier, but really that's about it! Go for a cocktail and sit at the bar to enjoy the view. The 21 dollar valet parking is a scam- where else can you park?? I handed my keys to the valet and he pulled my car up 3 feet from where I pulled up and parked it right in front of the restaurant, thats my 21 dollar valet park? For really well done northern Italian food spend a bit more and go to Dante & Luigi's on S 10th- then you will understand that La Veranda is Just OK!

La Veranda

This restaurant is a hidden gem. A very nice menu, excellent food but slow service. The inside of the restaurant has a view of the inner harbor and the pleasure craft, that are docked outside the restaurant.

EXCELLENT ANNIVERSARY DINNER

By sommers400 |

At my wife's request, we ventured into Philadelphia for our 40th wedding anniversary dinner at La Veranda, a restaurant where we had dined previously. We had dinner on August 5, 2018, and it was very pleasant and excellent. Since we flagged that it was our anniversary on Open Table, we received two complimentary flutes of champagne, and our server, Chantel, could not have been more helpful. My wife enjoyed her salmon and I had Caesar salad, plus veal parmigiana, both excellent entrees. On an early Sunday evening in the summer, the restaurant was not crowded......we were seated right at the windows with a view of the Delaware River.....altogether an excellent experience.

Saturdays on the river!

By Jane C |

My husband and I go to La Veranda every Saturday for lunch. Angelo greets us. Gene takes care of our cocktails and Bledie is our server. He is the best in the city. The veal is tender and full of flavor. The rack of lamb is delicious. The chef Dino is excellent. After lunch, we go outside and love the river views. Outstanding place

FOOD DISGUSTING

By george b |

me and my wife had dinner there friday night 12/6 first off the man at the door who greeted us didnt smell to good our service was very unfriendly and rude now to the food my pasta was tasteless and over cooked my wifes veal was like eating a piece of hard rubber for the price i expected a lot more i would never return

Still one of the best!

By RJOPR |

It wasn't our first time. We have gone to Veranda for Valentine's Day, Date Night, Special occasions, and we have had two to thirty people in our party. I can't think of one time where we were even mildly disappointed. The food is great, the staff on point, the ambiance lovely, the bar is very good and we get to see the water...great view. Valet parking...no hassle and away from hectic center city. Thank you La Veranda for yet another great evening!!!!!

LaVeranda, What an exquisite dining experience!

By srbubser |

My mother and I were treated like royalty from the mement that we entered the restaurant. There was a menu with a large variety of choices. Our dinners were delicious and served with class. The view of the river and the bridge were an added attraction!

Used to be good - not any more

By Allene608 |

Went to La Veranda for our anniversary dinner. It started with the menu which had a few misspellings on it - the worst was spelling broccoli "rape" instead of rabe. Salad was OK, soup was good. The waiter took our order for wine when the entree came and he didn't bring the wine until our meal was almost over. I had veal stuffed with mozzerella in a tomato, mushroom and pea sauce. My entree came with the sauce thrown onto the meat (not nicely poured) and a sprig of parsley on the side. I couldn't even find the mozzerella. It came with a side of 2 thin slices of potato and about two tablespoons of broccoli rabe. We will never go back.

Sunday lunch

By ANNACherryHill |

Haven't been here for years and came back for lunch with the family. Don't think will ever be back. Food took forever. Pasta carbonara was over salted. Cannoli and chocolate cake and cannoli we ordered for desert was not available. Bad food. Slow service. Not worth the $$$

Great Italian with water view.

By David-0n-the-road |

Food and service are excellent!!! Try the veal saltimboca or veal fungi, or chicken parm. Enjoy the duck boats going up and down the Delaware River right outside the restaurant.

Sunday night upstairs for dancing.

Wonderful desserts, solid meal overall

By Goward |

My sweetie and I visited La Veranda for the first time on a Saturday night. It is located on a Pier on the waterfront, with a beautiful view of the boats and marina. Appetizers were great. We shared a grilled vegetable platter, and clams in a white wine sauce, both which were excellent. Homemade bread was wonderful. My main course was bucatini with a spicy arrabiatta sauce which was excellent. She had the filet with a peppercorn sauce, both of which were disappointing however. The filet was not that flavorful, and the peppercorn sauce was the same. Another sauce might have helped. This causes their rating for me to drop a whole point. Desserts were some of the best we've ever had. We shared a banana creme frulee, and a chocolate banana creme pie. Both superb. The restaurant has a very clubby feel with lots of regulars. Its an expensive night out, but certainly worth a try.

Authentic Italian on the Waterfront!

By MSA |

My family just had a wonderful lunch at La Veranda! The service was excellent, the food was delicious and we enjoyed the view. We received a very warm welcome and very attentive service. The branzino and the Dover sole were really fantastic and the side of sautéed vegetables was the perfect accompaniment. We loved the calamari, tuna tartare and caprese salad appetizers. The veal piccata, the gnocchi, the fettuccine Alfredo and the spaghetti bolognese were all delicious. Also loved the desserts especially the peanut butter cheesecake and pineapple sorbet. We really enjoyed our meal and look forward to returning!

The best

By chefGenty |

The food was great and the service was exceptional. Our waiter was fantastic. There was a beautiful full moon out that night and we could enjoy it from our seats as this restaurant overlooks the Delaware River.

Always good! Always affordable

By Joeyd51 |

My wife and I hit La Veranda up for the first time in a couple years. Food is always good, and service is always good. I love the Veal here, and their saltimbocca is off the charts. My wife got the chicken piccante, which was delicious. It may seem little, but their complimentary bruschetta is the best I have ever had. Great atmosphere and ambiance. Great value for the high quality food you get.

Skip the Swordfish!

By DMKofNJ |

Went with a group of friends for what I hoped would be a memorable meal - it was memorable, but not for the right reasons. Swordfish in a restaurant either tends to be really good or really bad; here it was the latter. Hesitant to order, I was assured it was fresh and not frozen - I would bet my next paycheck that it was in fact frozen. My grilled swordfish entree arrived as a thin slice, dried out, overcooked and almost bitter. It was paired with a few roasted potato pieces and some green beans and carrot pieces. Others in our group ordered the swordfish special where the fish was baked and buried in a mound of mango salsa - which at least hydrated the fish. They remarked they liked the salsa but also did not enjoy the fish. At $29 and salads were extra - this was a huge disappointment. None of the portions were what I would call huge. The salmon entree did have a nicely cooked piece of fish - sitting atop a small spoonful of spinach with a few mushrooms. The Caprese salad was huge slices of unripe tomato with even larger thick slices of moist mozzarella, with plenty of olive oil and balsamic. The cheese was tasty, but not much flavor in an unripe tomato. Those in our group that had desserts (and passed them to share) said they were just OK - nothing special and they did not finish them. Additionally we had to ask for water glasses to be refilled. A nice venue and the company of friends was superb - but the food - forgettable and overpriced for the lack of quality.

A Great Place

Great water view. Reasonably priced wine. Great food. The best staff. The pepper and mushroom sauce for my rib eye was memorable. Pasta was perfect. A place to return to time again.

$$ Italian Restaurant on the waterfront

By DrewPav |

This is a upscale place with a menu that has most of the traditional Italian dishes, served in courses. I started with the mussels in oil and garlic. They were excellent, well cooked, and the portion was fairly large. It would have served two people, but I gladly finished them myself. I followed them with a bowl of Spaghetti Carbonara. A traditional Italian dish that was supposed to be a hearty dish served to miners in Italy. It is spaghetti cooked al denti and lightly coated with a beaten egg and tossed with Pancheta or Italian bacon. It was perfectly cooked and reminded me of the food I ate while I lived in Naples, Italy. The dessert menu was fairly extensive, but I settled on the Peanut Butter Cheesecake, which was fantastic!

beautiful views of river

By Jane C |

My husband and I have been visiting La Veranda for the past four years. We are always treated like honored guests. Angelo greats us at the door and Bledi always is our server. He is very attentive and lots of fun. We love the menu. The aged beef is delicious and the shrimp are large and meaty. I have my Christmas luncheon for work there every year. They consistently exceed my expectations.

Horrible service from John

By CliffSTRONG |

We are a large group of friends out for an early dinner on New Year's Eve. We ordered from a fixed menu for $90 per person. My wife and I picked calimarie for our appetizer. It came to the table cold, and rubbery. John our server knew it was bad and did nothing to help. Then we were to have zucchini soup and were served asparagus soup and it was cold. Both of these issues could have easily been resolved by an adequate server. Lobster ravioli was the next course, served hot. The main course was very nice all around the table. All evening John was arrogant and offensive. To finish the night we were charged an automatic 20% gratuity. The server calculated the gratuity from the total with tax. On a $90 per person plus wine and coffee we were all charged $4 per person too much. I believe an automatic gratuity made this server lazy, because he did a poor job from the beginning.

Old School Italian

By Marco B |

La Veranda is old style Italian --although at times a little decadence may be okay. Food was not bad but not sensational. What irked me however was that when ordering a rather pricey (yet well priced, to be fair) Pinot Grigio (a good label, Santa margherita) we were presented with a non refrigerated bottle, a no-no in my book. Service was good by our waiter but not attentive by the rest of the staff.

Delicious

By micheller2022 |

The food was excellent so was the service. Nice menu and selection. We'll be coming here again next time we're in Philly!

Awesome Staff

By TBRacingLover |

I love La Veranda.... Free valet parking, amazing Italian cuisine, and very friendly cordial attentive staff. We book our fundraiser event here every year in November and they never disappoint us. Food is always terrific! They will do anything to make sure their customers are pleased. I stopped by today to have lunch and the seafood antipasti was perfect.

very good food

By acaRich |

We went there for lunch the place wasn't to busy during the week. You can also access it by boat if you call for a reservation. The menu looked very good as was our lunch. It was sort of pricey as was the bar but all in all everything was delicious.

Impeccable service, great food, nice view

By danielcG3946WI |

This is NOT a pizza and pasta restaurant. It is fine dining but not terribly expensive. Most of the dishes are veal or beef, with some seafood. I had veal medallions in a white wine sauce with crab meat on top. The veal was like butter. They also have daily specials, like lamb chops, that are not typically Italian. Since I was dining solo, the extensive list of wines by the glass was appreciated. Their homemade Caesar salad dressing is also delicious, not too overpowering. The homemade Tiramisu is to die for. Luis provided excellent service and never let my water glass get more than half emptied. The location on the Delaware River just below the Ben Franklin Bridge offers nice views of the water. I was staying at the Holiday Inn Express across the street so I avoided the $16.00 valet parking fee. All in all La Veranda is a highly recommended choice in a city that has become glutted with restaurants that offer $50 steaks and ho hum service. The ambience is typical Trattoria with Dean Martin and Pavarotti serenading you while you eat. I would definitely return.

Disappointed

By cellagirl |

I enjoy doing reviews however doing this one is a challenge. We were celebrating a birthday and looking forward to good food and desserts. Neither were good. Well,my entree was not. Caesar salad had no taste, pasta was too "al dente" other people said food was just ok. Service was painfully slow and the restaurant was not busy. Only three other tables were occupied. Desserts were the worst. No one complained at the time because the restaurant was chosen by the birthday girl and we didn't want to hurt her feelings. So, bottom line I can't recommend this restaurant.

Out of the Way But Worth the Trip

By jagman8f |

Dined at 9:00 PM, mid-week, after a show at a local theatre. Greeted warmly. The view out to the river with the lights on the bridge was lovely. Service was terrific. We shared a spinach salad (gorgonzola on the side since one of the party doesn't like it) which could have been a bit better if the stems had been removed. Dressing was tasty and just coated, rather than flooded, the dish. We each had a pasta. Mine was a perfect, not overwhelming, size with plenty of bacon and just the right degree of heat. My lady friend reported that hers with pescatore was delicious as well. Wine by the glass was reasonably priced and a generous pour. I felt like a guest in a private home as in this large dining room, we were the only diners. Received a cordial thanks and goodnight upon leaving. I haven't been here in years because of the isolated location but I will return.

Cold, Cold Night, Warm Friendly Place

By David S |

On a First Friday after visiting a not so nearby gallery, we walked through truly freezing windy weather to La Veranda for dinner. We were warmly welcomed to this modern yet old-fashioned, table-cloth restaurant with interesting decor, very attentive and well-trained wait staff, with a menu that is ample and pleasingly varied in choices. The food portions were generous and the preparation perfect. She had bronzino and I Dover sole. Both were filleted table side and with precision and grace. We will definitely be returning, especially in the Spring to enjoy the waterside dining al fresco!

Good location, food was just OK

By Alan B |

A large group of us were here for dinner. It's a nice location, but the food was just OK. My salad was over-dressed, drowning in dressing and the veal marsala was bland.

La Veranda

By doctordell |

Before going here, I read the reviews. It seemed people either loved it or hated it. I took a chance and was glad I did. The atmosphere was very inviting with big picture windows on both sides of a long narrow room affording a view of the harbor as well as the street. The staff was very friendly, welcoming, and very attentive. I had an octopus appetizer which was served with some greens and a delightful sauce. My main course was veal parm which was well done. My wife had a chicken dish topped with artichoke, prosciutto, and mozzarella. It was superb. Our two guests were also happy with their meals. The prices were what you would expect to pay for a fine dining establishment. Since we didn't drink, I can't speak to the wine list, but my overall experience at La Veranda was very positive.

Best chivache I ever had.

By Donna H |

Wonderful. We're middle class and treated like we were Upper class. Bring on the hot and cold appatizers (extra salmon) and the seafood pasta. Plus we loved the waterfront view. We had our 25th anniversery party upstairs in the lovely private room. Can not do better.

Great view and ambience

By QuakerBoy90 |

Our first time here and with friends also their first time - all were pleased. Very nice ambience, cloth napkins and a view of the water and sailboat docked just outside the window. Tough to beat in Philadelphia. Service was very good and few tables occupied on a mid-week evening. Prices are very reasonable. Standard Italian menu. Everyone enjoyed their entree. We'll have to come again to taste other items on the menu, but I think that it's difficult to make Italian food very different in tase or appearance. Standard fare here but taste and presentation were fine. I wish that valet parking was less expensive. Easy to get to from the suburbs.

Great food, great view

By Sandra P |

Our main dish meals were delicious. We order three different meals and tasted each others and we could not decide who had chosen the better meal. I would not recommend the Cesar salad, because they put hardly any dressing, so the salad was dry. The bruchetta entre was the best I ever had!!

our third visit to this wonderful restaurant where the food, the staff and the ambience are superb. what a great way to spend my Mom's birthday. Everyone had a terrific meal. Kudos to all

Great Calamari & NiceView

By Pocotango |

Saw restaurant across from hotel and decided to try it. Seemed to be a slow week night and we were seated immediately at a table next to the doorway and windows facing the river and marina. Tried the calamari and it was excellent. Golden brown, lightly breaded and tender without being rubbery. Definitely enough to share for two. Both had linguini with mussels, calamari, shrimp and clams. One with red and one with white sauce. Both good. Nice bottle of wine completed the meal. Service was excellent.

Nice Restaurant

By PirateGuy |

Went to La Veranda Ristorante with friends and had a very nice dinner. The food was good and the atmosphere was nice. My only complaint was that potatoes came with the meal and when I asked if I could have pasta instead, they said no. I ended up buying a side of pasta to go with my veal but it was an extra $6.00 which I would have preferred to substitute for the potatoes.

Poor service

By Erica F |

Absolutely horrible service from Jon Carlos. Loud, crass, disrespectful, slow and a very poor representative of the restaurant. Food was just ok. Enjoyed my meal so much more at Panorama the night before! Resent the automatic tip being added after the tax, waiter lined his pocket with another 2% by doing that. When challenged on that he was belligerent, raised his voice and was rude. Totally horrible experience.

Very nice dining experience

By Amy G |

The staff was very gracious. The melon, prosciutto, and cheese is excellent! Pasta was good and cappuccino was the perfect ending to a delightful evening. Very nice!

outstanding food and ambiance and staff

we ate there Sat night and it was by far; one of the best Italian dinners we have had in Phila ...and we eat out several times a week. A must try if you haven't. Chef came out to talk and this is authentic Italian

Poor service and food

By Mark G |

We had a group of 14 people hoping to enjoy New Year's Eve with a nice dinner before celebrating the new year. We had a preset 5 course meal.We started out with cold appetizers, followed by a soup change that we were not told. Our waiter stated he was doing the best he could. "NOT" Then the lobster ravioli had unrecognizable lobster. No taste. During our wait our waiter got into a loud discussion over table assignments with another waiter. Our main course entrees were all done well. the desserts were average at best. Some in our party had to keep asking for water, silverware, to be served with the others, all while everyone waited. To top the night off the waiter had to be tracked down to get our bill because he was to busy. During our wait our waiter also got into a loud decision with another waiter over table assignments. Knowing that he was getting a tip because the gratuity was already being added because of the group size whether we we satisfied or not. Then the bill comes and the 20% was added after the tax to the meal. We were all upset over this and when one of our party asked the waiter he stated that he was too busy now. We had to seek out the manager t be able to get some relief. The charges were corrected by the manager, however the waiter came to the table with a loud voice, in a filled restaurant, to state, " I took a loss and you can Do the Math" so that the entire restaurant could hear. This was totally unacceptable. The manager should have come to the table to apologize to our party for all the concerns that we had. The original charges were already posted on one of our party's card site before we even left the restaurant or had the correction made. This was not the way we wanted to look forward to 2017. Will never recommend this restaurant to anyone in the future.

Relaxing lunch on the river

By jj |

Three of us celebrated a birthday on Saturday. The service, food, cocktails and atmosphere were perfect. We had the parchment fish and clams, veal and linguine con vongole. What a treat! If we are in Philadelphia again we will go back. It was easy to get to and we parked out front since it was a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Not as good as it used to be

By LauraMC70 |

My husband brought me here about 11 years ago, and I loved everything about it. I would always talk about how great it was, so he brought me back a couple months ago. We were both surprised at how bad the service was! The restaurant was practically empty, and we understood why. The food was still really good...I got the chicken Parmesan, and it was just as I had remembered it. But our waiter was terrible. He was absent for most of our meal, and was not very friendly at all. It's an expensive restaurant, and for the prices they charge, I expect not only the food to be top notch, but the service as well. With all the great restaurants Philly has to offer, we're crossing this one off our list of places to revisit.

Good food, big portions, nice atmosphere, but some flaws

By AndyTheGameInventor |

Realistically 3.5 stars. Staff was vey friendly and greeted us warmly, but the waiter was a bit less so. As soon as we sat down they brought a complimentary bruschetta for everyone. It looked very nice but was a little light on flavor and too heavy on oil. We ordered a salad and a calmari appetizer. The salad was good but again too heavy on the oil. The calmari was very tender but very little flavor. Entrees were good and the portions quite large. On one of the dishes again, too much oil. We felt the wait for our dinners was too long especially since the place was almost empty at the time we arrived. Décor is nice and the back windows overlook the houseboats. This is a restaurant that is very close to being very good - they need cut back using olive oil as a principal flavoring agent. Willing to give it a second try.

La Veranda Deserves Your Attention and Attendance!

By Jack W |

I came upon LaVeranda about a year ago. Every time I am there I am pleased I came into the city to do so. My most recent visit was on a weekday night so there were fewer patrons. The restaurant is spacious and well-appointed - just as their website pictures show it. The hostess was delightful and came to check on how things were for us a couple of times - much more than most comparable restaurants. Our server was attentive, polite and patient as my friend and I were in no hurry. The food was (and is) excellent. I had a special salad, insalata fruitti de mare, which was chock full of tender and flavorful shellfish in a light vinaigrette dressing. I had one of the dinner specials, risotto with Spanish octopus. I love risotto, and usually judge the quality of the Italian restaurant, and more specifically the chef, by the way in which they prepare their risotto. It was fabulous. Needless to say, I had my share of shellfish that night, and left a very happy man. As for the menu and its pricing, LaVeranda offers a wide variety of dishes plus the specials I mentioned and comparable and fair prices. The wine list is very diverse and of good quality. You can get something reasonably priced or go "high end". Needless to say, I will be back again and again. I recommend that you do as well. It definitely deserves your attention and attendance.

Beautiful view

I called just days before a Saturday night and got a reservation. That should have been my first clue. My second clue should have been when I called at the last minute to push our reservation back and hour. It wasn’t a problem. We were greeted warmly by the host when we entered the restaurant. They have outdoor seating; however we asked to be seated inside as it was a humid evening. For a Saturday night there was hardly anyone there. A few people at the bar, four tables outside on the patio and a few tables inside. We were seated at a table by the window. The restaurant overlooks the Delaware River and the view was wonderful. Our server, Diana, was fantastic. I think she was the only server there that was actually working. She was running around like a chicken with her head cut off. She had multiple tables inside and outside. I found the menu to be limited so I opted for the chicken parmesan and my boyfriend decided on the salmon. For the amount of patrons in the restaurant it took too long for our entrees to arrive. The grilled salmon was dry and overcooked. My chicken parm was juicy and flavorful with just the right amount of cheese. I hate it when it‘s swimming in cheese. To summarize I found the service attentive and food underwhelming.

Perfect dinner!

So glad I tried this restaurant! The place was adorable, the staff was very friendly, and the food was delicious. (Plus it's in a great location with lots to do in the area.) I would absolutely go back again.

Flawless!

By Muriel L |

I like being spoiled! I was greeted warmly and immediately served a fresh and flavorful bruschetta on house-made bread. I ordered the spinach and ricotta ravioli; the tomato basil sauce was absolutely fresh and the pasta was wonderful! Angelo, the maitre'd, stopped by my table at least four times to make sure I was happy. I dined with a view of the Delaware and the lights on the Benjamin Franklin bridge. The place is visually appetizing inside as well. I will definitely eat at La Veranda again the next time I am in Philadelphia!

Family meal!!

By Bill S |

Don't know how this place has so many stars. All our food was like left over family dinners. Took my family of six no body had anything good to say except the waiter was terrific Moe. I think he was doing it all.

Everything was great

By Robert H |

This was our first time at this restaurant. This experience far exceeded our expectations! The appetizers, service, drinks, entrées, desserts, atmosphere, valet parking, everything was excellent. The only thing they could have done better is to offer something special for the person our group was honoring. We will go back.

Just not what it used to be, and what a shame

By Pescecanne |

I used to frequent this place and all my friends did as well. Lately, its been a great stop for appetisers and cigars before a home football game, however, last two months...two visits, the place has been relatively empty, and a desparate attempt made to try and satisfy....the sweet langoustinos were burnt, squid and shrimp salad was just awlful, they presented a shrimp/crab tower that was good, the grilled calamari tasted like it was old...than we opted for steaks because they have a wood fired grill, actually one of the first places i ever saw one but decided they weren't going to use it, opting instead to cook what seemed to be frozen tasteless steaks in the kitchen not "Pittsburgh Rare" as ordered, but dense, dry, welldone shoe leather. The staff tried hard, but the food just couldn't get it going. Finally, six of us, $ 1,200 bill. I left very angry but waited a week to write this. When Roberto opwned this, it was a fine restaurant. He's been gone a long time...so has the quality of what used to be.

Very disappointing!

By Barbara C |

We had a very disappointing experience for dinner on Mother's Day. We planned this location because we heard good things about it and my mother in law drove 2.5 hours from Baltimore to be with us. * our reservation was with open table and we did check in at the hostess area when we came in yet I received an email from open table saying that you cancelled our reservation. * the bread that was brought to our table initially was all burnt and we had to ask for replacement. No butter or olive oil was provided until we asked. * the arugula, beet salad was supposed to come with goat cheese but instead had Parmesan. When I brought that up to our waiter he said that the chef was doing different things from what the menu said. We should have been told that * my mother in law ordered chickpeas with pasta. The menu didn't say it came with clams yet it came out with them. Again the chef doing his own thing * It took awhile but someone other than our waiter came over and took our dessert order. 15 minutes later we still didn't have it and when asked he said he forgot. * the peanut butter cheesecake was still partially frozen and the crem brûlée was cold Other people on the restroom were also complaining about the poor service. * The only positive thing I can share is that for the most part, our entrées were good I wrote an email to the restaurant management on Sunday and have yet to get a response.

La Veranda is back!

By ZeldaAndScott2014 |

After a year of bad food (though always genial service), we stopped going to LV, despite its convenient location. We wandered in tonight, strictly on the basis on proximity, and had our socks knocked off! GREAT Italian food. We told the server (lovely) that we noticed the change and he brought the chef out to speak with us. He's from Florence and cares passionately about the kitchen, and you can taste it. It's always been a place with a great view, now it has a solid kitchen to match. Viva Veranda!

Kind of out of the way gem.

If not from the area you would never find it. Wonderful restaurant on the water. Never had a bad meal here. Outstanding food and service.

Lovely Views Over Delaware River

By fiamma11 |

The views are nice so ask to be seated near a window. The wine was very good, the service was good and the food was mostly very good. All this added up to an enjoyable dinner. I am glad we visited.

Very nice restaurant.

Very nice restaurant. Excellent staff. Food was delicious. Nice views of the river. I would definitely recommend and will definitely go back. I see they have a rear deck, I want to eat out there once the weather gets warmer.

Well worth the trip

My wife and I have been here to dine twice. The food has always been outstanding and the service was great.

good family meal

By remery1513 |

We were in Philadelphia for my sons graduation and took he and his wife to La Veranda for dinner. The view was good, but we had not seen them for a while and caught up on conversation in a quiet comfortable atmosphere. The wine list was excellent with numerous Italian choices. The veal chop was large and cooked right, the scampi was unusual in that it was in a red sauce rather than the usual white wine and garlic. I had a side of arriabata which was spicy and nice. Ann had the veal picatta which was also very good. Service was well done, no real wait, but no rush. He was present when needed, and didn't hover. Espresso was hot and strong.

Excellent Evening Out!

By John P |

I have never been here, even though I only live a short distance away. I decided on this restaurant because they had a veal chop on the menu and I was celebrating my birthday with friends. It was an absolutely divine evening out! The hosts were incredibly personable. The waiter was informative and attentive and the food was delicious. We ordered the calamari to share between 4 of us. It was adequate. But what made up for it's bit of lacking was the fantastic bread, bruschetta and delectable peppers which were all served prior to our main courses arriving. My friend and I both chose the stuffed veal chop. "Delicious" does not even do it justice! My husband had the whole Tilapia which was made to order for him. At $40.00, it was a bargain as it appeared to be a good 2+ pounds! My best friend had the chicken parmesan (which normally is not a dish I would choose). It was outrageously good! What a memorable birthday meal. I will definitely be dining here again!

$250 check to eat mediocre food in 55 degrees.

By Heather M |

My husband and I booked this restaurant for a romantic, waterside Valentine's Day dinner via opentable. When we arrived at 5:20, the host spent 15 seconds trying to find our reservation, indicated he couldn't, but took us to a table in a back room. The room was noticeably colder than the main dining room, and when we remarked on it to the woman (we later found out she was the manager) she said they were working on it and would be seating a large party in a few minutes which would warm up the room. 20 minutes later, after moving tables to avoid a draft, another couple joined us in the room. The manager came around asking how it was going - the new couple asked to be moved and were told there were no tables, and that a group of 20 was arriving to be seated with us in 10minutes. She asked us as well, and I told her I overheard and we were looking forward to a warmer room shortly. At this point the sun had set and with temperatures dropping rapidly outside, it was probably 60 degrees in the room. At about 7:00, a third couple was seated with us. They were promptly moved after requesting a warmer table!! The other couple and I expressed our dissatisfaction at this, and we were told the large table wasn't due in for an HOUR yet! We told the gentleman this was unacceptable and the manager had lied to appease us - at this point we were warming fingers over a dinner candle, and I could barely feel my toes. The temperature had dropped by at least another 5 degrees. Before dessert I requested our jackets because it was unbearable and we asked to speak with the manager. She never came around. The Gentleman who did come by to listen said the other table was given a break on their check and he would ask the manager to do the same to ours - because the thermostat was having a hard time keeping up with the draft from the windows. We were told she refused but 'offered us a drink from the bar on the house'. When we left, it took another 30 minutes to go through the talk to the manager process, the large table was beginning to arrive. At this time we were told the thermostat in that room was, in fact, broken. This may be a great place 'normally' but I was told they use this room on special occasions and they were touring for a special event while we were there. The waiters in the room with us, and even the gentleman trying to help were attentive, polite, and extremely apologetic, on management's behalf, but management should have owned up to the problem. $250 was unacceptable for this experience.

Spectacular location, uninspired food

By TomM1951 |

The location on Penn's Landing is beautiful, but it seems clear they are relying on the location. The veal marasala is very tender but nothing special. Folks who had the chicken were disappointed, but those who had the pasta with vodka sauce were pleased. The wine is acceptable. The salad was surprisingly good. Our server knew nothing about the wine. We had to talk to the bartender.

Absolutely delicious Italian food

By TonyaMarie |

My daughter and I ate here while in town staying at the holiday inn Penns landing. The food was excellent and the service was some of the best I’ve experienced. They are also located right on the river with gorgeous views. I would highly recommend this restaurant and will return when in town again. Very upscale and fine dining.

Feeling close to Soprano

By patricia52156 |

The italian food is italian. The location is perfect, including the fact that parking is practical. In Summer, you can be seated outside on the river side and only see boats, floating homes and riverside appartments, forgetting about the city. Waiters are excellent, atmosphere is cool. A very different place in Philly, also one of the best for dining along Penn's landing after the Moshulu.
