The closest I have been to France since I was actually there!

By mstavarz |

I spent a week in San Diego last winter, and this restaurant truly a highlight for me. I have been to France many times, and stepping into this cozy little bistro was extremely reminiscent of my trips overseas. We stumbled across it while we were in the area earlier in our trip, and came back a day or so later for dinner. We had to wait a bit for a spot, and ended up sitting at the bar, as there are not many tables available, but I almost prefer it that way for this type of eatery. Intimate. However, I believe you can call ahead to guarantee your spot. We ordered many small plates to split between the three of us, and a bottle of wine. The frisee and goat cheese salad was to die for. The cheese plate garnished with balsamic pears was delicious, and the chocolate mousse and aperitief were the perfect ending to the perfect meal. I highly recommend this spot, and would definitely return if I am ever again in the area.

Not "La bonne" yet

By Judith Cross |

Very seldom do I have to wash all my clothes and hair after dining. Everything I had worn to dinner reeked of grease - probably due to the tiny space of 20 tables. The food was average to poor the night I dined with friends - a fluke? Maybe. Service was prompt and polite. Baguettes appeared quickly after being seated; however they missed the mark; they had a heavy crumb, were tough and chewy, and were served with foil-wrapped butter - almost unforgivable in a French bistro. I ordered the mussels - decent, lots of em, and a good bargain. The "frites" that came with the mussels and my friends "steak frites" were a far cry from what you expect "frites" to be. These were fat and somewhat limp. My other friend had the trout. She said one side of the filleted trout was bone-free and the other side was full of bones...go figure. We had anticipated a pear tartan for dessert but they didn't have it that night—so we opted for the chocolate mousse. Earlier in the evening I had espied one going to the next table and it looked really good and quite large. When ours arrived it was much smaller (did they run out?) and the whipped cream was from of a commercial can. Would I go back? No. There is one saving grace for La bonne Table: the Lillet cocktail was a knockout!

Lovely Christmas Eve meal.

By Memphis Hotel Guy |

Lovely Christmas Eve meal. Petite, cozy gem of a spot. Table was ready and available on time. Attentive though laid back service. $20 corkage fee. Place was packed with many sharp looking clients. Relaxed vibe. My only small comment was that the lamb was a bit chewy. Other than that - great meal experience.

Most Authentic French Cuisine in SD

By MMann22 |

Charming little bistro on bustling 5th Ave, with a dedicated husband & wife team from Paris, cooking shoulder-to-shoulder in a surprisingly compact kitchen...I hope their marriage is strong. The menu is concise, so each dish can be cooked to perfection and I want to kiss the chefs every time I eat here! The best Duck Confit (topped with a crispy fried egg w/runny yolk) that I've ever had...and I've been to France several times!

Nice small place ...took me back to France

By Luis L |

This is a very small restaurant in the heart of Hillcrest. The food is excellent and the rustic feel of the place gave me the feel of being back in th south of France. Had the green salad, with the pork shank. Good wine selection and as in true french tradition they do have rose wines (not white zinf) on the menu. Great place for an authentic french feel and meal. Cheers!

Magnifique & formidable!!

By suzimoates |

My husband wanted to take me out to dinner for a delicious French meal for my birthday, this IS the place!! Starting from the moment we walked into this quaint and well appointed bistro, to the choice of French wine, immediate service, escargot (seriously délicieux), to my cooked to perfection lamb shank with flageolet, to the hands on visit from the owner (lovely & friendly) & finally the best creme brûlée ever! Don’t miss out, you won’t be disappointed!

Great for Brunch

By cedric09 |

Ever since Pardon My French closed, Hillcrest has been lacking a quality French restaurant. La Bonne Table rides in to the rescue with a small, cozy bistro style restaurant featuring all of the classic dishes you expect plus some nice surprises. We like the brunch menu that includes the expected (Omelet, Croque Madame, Pain Perdu) but augments them with some nice variations such as a raclette, salmon toast and crepes. Service can be slow, but the food is worth the wait.

Cozy and intimate

By Jay A |

Stopped here for dinner after a movie. We wanted to give it a try and were very pleased. The place has a very intimate ambiance - small with few tables. We had the pork and the steak. The port chops were juicy and delicious. The best we've ever had at a restaurant. The steak was done to perfection, just the way we like it. The one criticism is about the fries - they were soggy. This might be the way they are enjoyed in many French restaurants. Thus, it is a personal taste that is the impetus for this negative comment. I'm not a wine expert but the wine list seemed to be very good and offer a good range of choices. The prices on many were very reasonable and some were way out of my league, but may be of interest to others. The service was very good, friendly, helpful and efficient. I could ask no more. My highest compliment is that we definitely will return.

Why go to Paris?

By Jay P |

La Bonne Table is as good as any restaurant I have eaten at in Paris. The escargots and French onion soup are superb. We had the duck, the lamb and the entrecote. All were cooked to perfection with amazing sauces. You MUST get a side or two of the Gratin Dauphinois...creme potato gratin that melts in your mouth. The creme brulee and the paper thin crepe suzette were outstanding. But he piece de resistance for me was the chocolate mousse. It is made from dark chocolate and has shavings throughout. And the price is very reasonable for a fine dining restaurant...$80 per person with wine and a couple of drinks. Already planning to go back in September and our friends are dying to try it.

Taste of France

By jim41752 |

La Bonne table is a small French restaurant, which endeavours to serve authentic, traditional, French dishes. I had the duck confit, which was quite good. I also liked the fact that the champagne is served in traditional, old-fashioned, coupes. The food itself was delicious. However, the service was absolutely horrible, in the sense that it took well over 30 minutes to get our orders. The restaurant was not that crowded, so I'm not sure why the service was so slow. This is where I give it only three stars. It would have a higher rating if the service had been better

Special neighborhood bistro

Very tasty, warm and friendly neighborhood bistro. Superior service. They really need to improve on their wine list!

A+ all the way!

By stuartca |

Service A+ Food A+ Dining Room A+ We have been here several times and it is, without a doubt, one of our top five favorites in San Diego. We went there this week to celebrate Valentine's Day. Even though every table was taken the dinner and service were perfect. Love this place!

Simple & Authentic

By Kurt G |

The food was simple, authentic and delicious. The service was efficent, friendly & unpretentious. What's not to like? Since there were five of us, I got to sample the whole menu. No disappointments there! I had the Grand Marcon(?) for dessert. Soooo good.

Moules and Frites - just like back home

By Wshiresd |

Standing on the corner of the street, this small restaurant is easy to find. Parking is on the street, or in the "pay to park" lots within one block of the restaurant. The interior is cozy and welcoming with walls adorned with photographs and other eclectic items. Menu is on one page, which I personally like. To me it shows that thought goes into the selection of the ingredients and choice of dishes prepared. Our party ate the steak and frites, trout almandine, and duck confit. We all insisted that each person taste ours as it was so amazing. Service is excellent, food is delicious.......we will be back

French Boite with Small Bistro Menu in Hillcrest

By pensando42 |

Arriving on a perfect and beautiful Saturday night, we were quickly seated in this very tiny French restaurant on Fifth Ave. The menu is short with a limited number of French bistro classics. The escargots although nicely seasoned were tough and full of sand as they had not been rinsed (you could break a tooth). The bread was warm and ample. The frisee salad huge with a nice mustard vinaigrette. The pork shank is mammoth and tasty (share for 2 or 3) and accompanied by mashed potatoes. The duck confit is nicely cooked and moist with the same frisee salad (should vary the items or inform first)and ample haricot verts. Wines by the glass were dreadful and stale and rancid and served in $1 Store tiny glasses (a very cheap touch). Service was professional and friendly. We may return but is a nice French venue now in Hillcrest better than the competition up the street.

A true gem.

By SusDav |

We've been coming to La bonne Table for over a year - and wow! The service is always first rate, the ambiance is sophisticated and welcoming, and the food is perfect. The duck liver pate has a mousse-like texture, and is rich in taste, without the heaviness that one associates with pate. The mussels and frites take me back to time I spent in Paris, the pork chop was seared perfectly, but so succulent that it seemed impossible, and the duck confit is moist, never greasy with just the right amount of crisp on the skin. Great wine list and fantastic cocktails, too. Every meal at La Bonne Table is a celebration of the good things in life - just beautiful.

Tried It But Better French Food in San Diego

By raymS1571ZG |

Having heard so much about this restaurant I wanted to try it. Fois gras to start was tasty and large portion. Steak frites was okay - tasty but a lot of gristle. The disappointment of the meal was the dessert of profiteroles. I recognize it is difficult to have good profiteroles in a humid climate, but these were more than just limp - they were chewy. Very unacceptable. Service was okay with one waiter for the whole dining area who also served as bartender.

One of the classic neighborhood French Bistro's in San Diego

By Rich G |

Having recently moved to San Diego from Chicago, delighted to find a number of authentic small French bistro's. First time visit to La bonne Table during restaurant week found the menu offerings showcasing some of their more popular bistro dishes and for the most part they were well executed. Steak Frites brought a nice cut of meat with tasty sauce, yet the frites were more American style fries than thin, very crispy frites. The Duck Confit was well seasoned, but served with only similarly seasoned brussels sprouts The chocolate mousse has a nice semi sweet taste served with a large whipped cream dollop though I've had better mousse. Portions were generous for the $40 three course menu. Wines were reasonably priced. Coffee service was not offered ...don't know if this is normal or due to Restaurant Week. Service was attentive though a problem was noted with the kitchen. It seems that they cannot cook many dishes at one time. which can result in uneven timing on delivery of courses to seated tables. Located on a corner in the Hillcrest neighborhood, there are many other restaurants in the vacinity and parking can be problematic.

Be transported to France and relax

By Randall |

A little coffee and desert go a long way. We had finished dinner across the street and were actually going elsewhere for a sweet and an espresso when we happened on La Bonne Table. I had not been here in years and my dining partner had never been here, so in we went. We ordered the house made crepe auzette and the chocolate mouse. My dining partner had espresso. The crepes were a 9 out of 10 and the mouse was a 10 out of 10. Both were a delight, reasonably priced for the quality and the serving size was also spot on. Our server was great. He kept us plied with cold water and made sure we were taken care of. The six-top next to us had all manner of dinners brought and every one of them looked marvelous. It seems they all enjoyed every bite. If there was one qualm, the espresso was not served in a warm cup which brought the temp of thee drink down to tepid. A small detail, but a warm cup for any coffee drink makes the drink so much better. We both loves this place and will be back for a proper meal soon. It is small, quaint, and you feel truly transported to another country. Really nice, indeed.

Excellent food

By bb1769 |

This small French restaurant hasn't been open too long, but this was our first time to try it. The food is pretty traditional French. All that we had was delicious (frisee salad, halibut and steak for main courses, and creme brulee and chocolate mousse). Portion sizes are more American than French (fortunately take-away boxes are no issue).

Very lovely evening, food

Very lovely evening, food was beautifully prepared and service was great. Very quaint, quiet, peaceful vibe.

Perfect dinner with my Valentine

By Kate S |

A small restaurant in what was once a home in Hillcrest. Felt like we were in Europe. Very attentive but not overbearing wait staff, FABULOUS food, and a very affordable, delicious bottle of a 2010 French Bordeaux recommended but not on the menu. The foie gras terrine was the best I've ever had: I didn't want to swallow... just wanted to savor the incredible flavor forever. My sweetheart had the lobster bisque, and it was wonderful. The duck legs Confit was crispy and very moist. So much to enjoy.

Intimate French restaurant

By PtLomafoodie |

This restaurant was converted from a small house and has an intimate dining room with a beautiful bar. Reservations recommended! One of the few places in San Diego that I can order a trout almondine or a duck confit. It also has my husband’s favorite beer Kronenbourg. Terrific food and friendly service every time!

Wife loved it

My wife is every French and she was thrilled with this place. Small cafe in corner not crowed great service terrific brunch. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a cute French restaurant with great everything.

très bien

By Patrick5451966 |

A fantastic little restaurant that is situated in the heart of Hillcrest and if you sit outside the seating is slightly elevated from the foot traffic and as you enjoy your meal you can feel and sense the local vibe. Seating indoors appears cramped at first glance but two thing you realize quickly is the seating is well placed and you really can’t hear others conversing. The escargot were cooked great and so tasteful I found myself dipping my baguette into the sauce. The endive salad was reminiscent of my mothers culinary skills but with a little less bite, I suspect to appeal to the masses, as she used Maille Dijon. The duck was very flavorful, moist, and plated nicely over a bed of mustard cream Brussel sprouts that were so delicious. The two waiters worked in tandem and complimented each other nicely. Parking anywhere in Hillcrest is very challenging but you can use your credit card for payment. Mom I thought of you as I dined here and miss your cooking. RIP Michele Paul Marie Quatrehomme.

A small French restaurant that is big on taste and style

By Vances2 |

We visited with our friends who have been back and forth to France many times. Each knows good cuisine and this was our first try of La Bonne Table. We started out with the Saint Martini, an elderflower gin martini that was so smooth and delicious it makes you want to have many more. From the escargot to salads and French onion soup starters, each was so well done. An example is the rich broth of the onion soup that brought deep flavor and richness to the soup. Our table had the trout almandine, which was amazing in flavor and the duck which was not greasy but rich in taste falling off the bone goodness. The steak frites was delicious as well. We finished with crepes that were light, and bursting with orange flavor and the amazing chocolate mousse. Great service and food, we highly recommend this gem. Do note if you have a party of six, you will have a service charge (I.e. tip) added to the bill so no need to calculate the tip.

Memorable evening with outstanding menu and service

By roger w |

Having traveled from Maine, we were looking for a local, small, and elegant French Bistro, and what a find we made. La Bonne seats only about 30, which was a nice size, but the choices on the menu were outstanding. We had six in our group, and each tried something different. The appetizers and main courses were all delicious and served in a most decorative manner! The waite staff was efficient, helpful with descriptions of the entrees, present when needed but not over bearing. We shared three desserts which also were also superb!

Like being in a small town in France, eating well & enjoying it all...ambiance, food, wine, decor

By SueQuinn |

We recently went for a "big deal" birthday; had a fine, fine meal, and not for a big deal price. Very reasonable. Duck confit over Brussels Sprouts; chocolate mousse, good wines. Seasonal menu; if they have the bouillabaisse, it's fantastic, too, and enough for two to split and still take some home. I'll be back way sooner than my next birthday.

Outstanding food & atmosphere

Good French onion soup with a great Gruyere crust. The confit de canard is excellent. Les Moules are the best in San Diego! Great cocktails

Love letter to Paris

By BabsD99 |

Stepping into La Bonne table is like stepping into a cute Parisian cafe. The service is top notch. A simple beautiful menu with all your favorites from the city of lights - escargot, frisée salad, frenc onion soup, mussels and more...atmosphere is welcoming and charming. Plus you can enjoy a nice glass of wine and conversation too!

Exploring new dining experiences

By Burnie D |

We had a 5 pm reservation on a Tuesday. This is a small restaurant but we had our pick of tables since we were the only diners at this time. I started with an excellent Sazerac cocktail one of the best I had ever had. My wife had a Sidecar it was only okay. We were given some very good warm bread and butter. I started with one of the best pate's I had ever eaten. My wife had an excellent salad. As her main course she ordered Escargot. I had a huge serving of mussels in a lobster bisque. They were great. I had a glass of cabernet that was very good. After a very pleasant 2 hour experience we both said "this is a repeat". The service was very good and the food was great.

We were a group of 4 people from Denmark, who are used to travel in France and know the french kitchen.

By Svend P |

We are from Europe and are used to the French kitchen - 2 years ago we stayed in Bankers Hill and paid often the local French restaurant a visit - it was closed the evening we planed to have dinner there. In stead we found "La Bonne Table", which is a cozy and intimate restaurant in neighborhood of Hillcrest - not far from Bankers Hill, they serve country french food in a bistro fashion. Their menu consists of classic french dishes - like in Paris. Absolutely fantastic dining experience. The food was incredible, the service spot-on, and the ambience delightful. Small, intimate setting. Went with two friends for an evening out. For starters, we ordered the French onion soup. Hands down the best I've ever tasted! We then split the steak frites and duck confit. Plenty for all and even had some leftovers. Dessert was the creme brulee and it was very traditional creme brulee... nothing fancy, but good. Our server was prompt, yet not overbearing, which is the way we like it. I would recommend this restaurant to pretty much anyone. It is old school French and it is a place you will like coming to again and again.

French Gem in San Diego's Hillcrest Area

By DivineFoodandWine |

If you want to be transported back to France for an evening, you must give La Bonne Table in Hillcrest a try! This is a small, yet charming French Bistro with food to elevate your senses. They have the best Boulevardier cocktails around, not everyone can make a good one, but Yo does an awesome job with the cocktails. They have a nice selection of wines by the glass and of course their cocktails, which are both spot on and at a great price. They typically have an appetizer special that runs out early, as they want their food as fresh as possible. They have quintessential French food on their menu and their duck confit is the very best I have ever tried. It comes with divine mustard Brussel sprouts. Their endive and frisée walnut salad with warm goat cheese toast and a mustard vinaigrette is fresh and bright. I just have to say it again, their duck confit is the best! And I have tried many a duck confit! They have large macaroons for dessert, their raspberry macaroons are filled with flavor, such a special treat. It wasn't just a great French meal, it was a great French experience. Merci bien La Bonne Table!

Tiny and charming

By laughingtraveler |

Just a great place on the quiet side of 5th Avenue. Only 20 seats - so it is pretty intimate. Limited menu - classic bistro fare. But always one special - so you won't get bored. Wine list is very good and moderate prices. A great spot for dinner with friends ( small groups) or your partner/ spouse, etc.

Fantastic food and service

What a gem!! The French onion soup was delicious and the NY steak perfectly cooked and fries to die for. Finished off with a crepe Suzette which was amazing! Lovely cozy restaurant with fantastic service and ambiance.

Neighborhood bistro in area of numerous restaurants

By MaryLS |

This tiny bistro on a corner in what appears to have been a house has three tables outside above the street where one can engage in the pass time of people watching. Inside are few tables that make up a cozy, comfortable, and inviting ambiance. Service, like in any place when a large crowd appears can be slow. As they take reservations, management needs to put on more staff on these occasions to be able to consistently deliver the type of service one expects here. Some very interesting cocktails, with descriptions including a little bit of their history. I had the French 75 and was delighted with the delicacy and refreshing aspects of it. Lamb chops (came with 4) were expertly grilled and accompanied by the most flavorful ratatouille I have had outside my own kitchen. As a chocoholic, we found the chocolate mousse to be a generous portion and decadent. I appreciated the choice of French wines on the menu since most restaurants in California feature California wines. I enjoyed a nice French Chablis which is a rarely offered in Southern California.

Great Restaurant!!!

This place is a fantastic restaurant, very cozy and chic. The food is beyond delicious, the service is excellent from the moment you arrive till the moment you leave. I totally recommend it and will definitely go back. I loved it!

Disappointing

By C C |

Have eatten here a few times before. Was very satisfied then. Started with the bone marrow. The bones were cut in rounds. Standing up on the plate. The little spoon and fork they brought, even though small coulds fit is some of the bones. The middle of the bone marrow was white, no cooked enough. Was like eatting uncooked fat. The toast tips had what looked like pest on it, over powered the marrow that was cooked and was very salty. I made a suggestion about the marrow bone being served longwise so it would be easier to eat, this is how I make it at home. The waiter said they used to, but got complaints that the marrow shunk, So I made the suggestion to not cook it so long that it shinks. I also ordered the rib steak which was very good with french fries. The fries were also very good, but the plate was too small for all the fries and the large steak. So fries were falling onto the table, messy! When I asked the waiter if they have Sole to substitute for the trout he didn't know what it was. I make Sole Almondine at home and really like it, so I was hoping they could do it there. All in all it wasn't horrible but not great.

A Little Bit of France in San Diego

By jlormeau |

We stumbled upon this restaurant quite by accident and are delighted we did. If you have been to France, you will enjoy this small bistro reminiscent of those found throughout France. If you have never visited France but have always wanted to, this bistro will provide a realistic experience. Menu offerings (very typical of a bistro in France): escargot, mussels, fois gras, cheese plate, chocolate mousse, creme brulee, French onion soup, among others. Tips: - Make a reservation. There are only 8 or so tables, and they were all full even on a Wednesday evening. We had to eat at the bar. - Plan to spend some time and money. The French typically make an entire evening out of a visit to an intimate bistro like this, lingering over each and every course. -Order a bottle of French wine. We enjoyed a modestly priced Cotes du Rhone. - Do try the cheese plate - Splurge on the chocolate mousse Bon Appetit!

Fine intimate dining with a downside

By shmillermd |

We recently had an opportunity to try out this small, eclectric restaurant with some friends. Not sure what occupied the venue before , but it is now a very small French themed bistro and a welcome addition to the San Diego restaurant scene. The woman responsible for greeting guests and the wait staff are efficient, pleasant and welcoming. We were never rushed and yet our orders came when we wished them to be presented.I think the capacity of the restaurant at any one time is less than 25.The food was superb in many respects and fairly priced. the only downside is inevitable because of the limited capacity and close proximity of the tables. We had the unfortunate experience of sitting next to a group of four loud and raucous people who never quieted down. We actually left earlier than we might have because it was virtually impossible to carry on a conversation.

Special neighborhood spot

By Phyllis H |

We dined at this charming little restaurant in Hillcrest during restaurant week. The food was very good, though the hanger steak was tough. The onion soup and duck confit more than made up for it. Service was friendly and efficient. We're looking forward to returning to explore the menu further.

Tiny restaurant, Big flavor!

By PtLomafoodie |

Impressive food coming out of this little restaurant. My husband & I ate here for the 1st time during Restaurant Week in January. I had a delicate trout amandine with almond slices browned in butter , a satisfying French onion soup and a chocolate mouse with dark chocolate shavings folded into the mouse. My husband had the duck confit, which had crispy skin and moist meat , but did not have a sauce. It was prepared & served as you would expect in a French Bistro. Highly recommend you make reservations, as there is limited seating, mostly for couples .

A Romantic evening

By jackstras |

This small but intimate bistro has superb food and worthy of visiting when you have a special event like an anniversary or birthday. The duck was crispy and tender and the foie gras was to die for. There are only 10 tables and reservations on weekends is advised.

Mother’s Day Delight

By Osidemike |

We ate brunch here on Mother’s Day although the restaurant has brunch every Sunday. The service was friendly and professional. The food was spectacular. Asparagus and goat cheese omelette , crepe gratinee, fried egg-cheese-potato stack (raclette au prosciutto), Le canard hache all were perfect. Actually, the omelette was probably the best I have ever tasted. Now we need another reason to go back for another brunch. We have also eaten dinner here and the place is really great for dinner, too. Small so make reservations.

Cuisine française ordinaire dans un petit restaurant

By No B |

Or.. an ordinary French cuisine in tiny restaurant. Friendly service but there's nothing remarkable here. La Bonne Table offers only a very limited menu and no special wines either. The dishes are not bad and not remarkable either. Steak Frites and Moule Mariniere are OK, but not shattering any records. Cramped dining space prohibits relaxed dining. OK in a pinch, but there are better moderately priced and more comfortable French places in the general area.

Like Paris only better

By John R |

Came here with friends who had found this quaint restaurant. The charm and decor really reminded us of Paris. The duck was excellent as well as the steak frites. French onion soup was perfection. Service was great and the bartender helpful in selecting the wine. I will definitely be back here again.

Absolute Best French Food Ever!

By Julian V |

I stumbled upon this little gem in Bankers Hill/Hillcrest in San Diego about a year ago. My husband and I were warmly greeted by Yo the Gm. He was just spectacular during our evening. The entrees and appetizers were on point. We both felt as if we were in France. Renaud the chef came out and said hello which was a nice touch to his authentic French cuisine. The space is charming and warm. The parking is pretty easy as there's plenty of street Parking and the venue is very affordable. Must try is the Berkshire Double bone prop chop and the French onion soup and escargot. All we can say is delicious and hurry and make a reservation. Bonjour, Julian

Excellent

By RPG625 |

While researching restaurants for our visit to San Diego, my wife, our cousins and I found Le Bonne Table through Trip Advisor, what a pleasant surprise! The restaurant has the atmosphere of a small and intimate bistro one would find in the back streets of Paris. The seating is very comfortable, the wait staff is very attentive and very respectful. It is refreshing to find a good restaurant where one can dine without being rushed, we had a leisurely three hour dinner. They have a good selection of wines that are very reasonably priced, a nice bottle of 2015 Bordeaux for $40 is unheard of where I live. The French onion soup was delicious and a great way to start the meal. I ordered the duck confit which was very good and not at all fatty, my wife had the steak au poivre and the other two people in our group had the cassolette and raved about it. For dessert we shared two crepes suzettes that were prepared to perfection. It was a perfect experience that we hope to repeat soon. Kudos to La Bonne Table

Five Stars --- for Disappointment

By Elizabeth S |

How I wanted to give this place five stars for food, for service, or for anything else positive. Four of us, from around the country, had a confirmed reservation and had looked forward to this meal --- celebration of a special occasion --- for weeks. We took a cab to the restaurant only to find it closed for kitchen renovation. No notice. Rien.

Excellent Taste of France

Ambience is charming...just like a small restaurant in the French countryside. Service is helpful, attentive and polite. One of the owners came by our table to talk...very nice touch! And, last but not least, the food was yummy. Very authentic.

Perfect ambiance for the best French food

By CindyClarkBar |

Six of us had a holiday dinner at La Bonne Table, a charming and intimate local French bistro. The entire experience really exceeded our expectations. Street parking was fairly easy (watch the meters as they operate until 8 pm). The cozy charm was perfect for our small group dinner. We let the server suggest a classic red blend wine and it was yummy ($65/bottle). We each had something different as entree and everyone raved. Moules with chunks of lobster in the bisque broth was out-of-this-world. So were the fresh, hot fries. Others had huge, thick tender pork chop; super fresh trout; lamb shank that was tender and delicious; and a huge hunk of tender duck with leg and thighs. For dessert we all shared great chocolat mousse and cream brulee. La Bonne Table is perfect for a romantic dinner, but I wouldn't recommend for groups larger than 6 as it would get a bit loud and lose the cozy touch. Keep it small and enjoy an evening of romance and excellent, fine French food.

Slice of France 🇫🇷 in the heart of San Diego

By Travelling_Bubbies |

Ok so this is legitimately like a restaurant in France... Tiny, intimate, and always packed! The service is escargot-ish but you're here to enjoy the food at a leisure pace anyways, right!? The beers on tap are so reasonable at $5 a glass, the mussels portion is very generous and the duck confit was fabulous. We had dessert to top it off and their new lemon sorbet is like taking a shot of vodka so make sure to walk Or uber home ;)

A GEM!

By bbahama |

My wife and I enjoyed a celebratory meal at La Bonne Table last week. It was a just what we hoped for, a traditional straight forward french Bistro menu. The chef is Paris trained and Yo is an experienced front room pro. We ordered a great salad, escargot served perfectly seasoned ,Steak frites and a flavorful and perfectly cooked pork chop. So if you like preparation, subtle flavors, well managed front room, small quiet spaces, then get there and enjoy your meal and your decision to go.

This small house restaurant, conveniently located in the Hillcrest neighborhood, is a gem. The classic French menu is wonderfully prepared and flavorful. The host is gracious and attentive. One feels relaxed in the calm, warm room. Hillcrest has a number of good restaurants but none finer than this one.

Cute setting But mediocre French food.

It was okay, but the mussels were small and fishy tasting. And my entree was okay for skirt steak. I wanted to love this cute place but we have another French restaurant a couple blocks away we will go back too instead.

The best!!!

The food is incredible. The onion soup is better than in many Paris bistros. The steak is excellent, perfectly cooked to order (although I chose not to dip it in the black pepper sauce, which I do not like on account of it having too much rosemary, for my taste). The crepes suzette are to die for. The wine list is limited but with excellent options, moderately priced. Service by Victor was attentive, unobtrusive and efficient. Definitely great value for your money. A true neighborhood gem!

At first glance you almost miss this quaint and artisan restaurant. But, its hard to miss the warm smile and greeting you get from Sandra even before you step in. As we walked in it reminded me of what it would feel like if were to be at a friends' house for a get together. Matching the ambiance, the food was equally presented to match the chefs intelligence and complexity. Not saying it is over done, but simplicity at its finest. Those of you looking for authentic, honest to goodness, cuisine should definitely stop by and grab bite because this place is place is off the charts!!

Charming Spot in Hillcrest

By David Z |

You'll be warmly welcomed and treated well at this small, charming French restaurant in Hillcrest. It seats perhaps 20. The staff is helpful and attentive. I tried the frisée salad and the mussels entrée (with garlic, shallots, white wine), both nicely done. My dinner companion tried the day's soup and a trout entrée. He was pleased. Each of us had two glasses of wine from the wine list. The check was just under $100 (not including tip). All around...a pleasant evening. We'd reserved a table in advance, which is likely a good plan at a restaurant this small.

A great local find with very good food

We read about the restaurant on-line and wanted to try it out since we love French cuisine and also thought the reviews we also saw on-line were worth a visit. We were not disappointed. Although it’s a very small place with only approximately 22 seats, counting the bar, we were immediately seated at our reservation time. I strongly suggest making reservations. The later the better. My wife and I found the service and food to be quite good and the portions were very ample. My wife ordered duck and I ordered the 16-ounce pork chop that was perfectly cooked the way I asked for it. Make sure you tell them how you wish it cooked otherwise it will be cooked medium well. I like it medium with pink showing. Which is what I asked for and it was cooked exactly to my satisfaction. Try the place out; you won’t be disappointed.

Cozy, Quiet and Romantic 'Petite' Restaurant in Hillcrest.

I picked this restaurant for a birthday based on a search of 'Quiet Restaurants in San Diego'. La Bonne Table offered just that. Soothing jazz music floated through the air as we sat at a table for two by the window, the warm glow of a lamp adding to the ambience. There were approximately 3 other couples for dinner and a few bar patrons. This is not a large restaurant -- probably the size of many people's living rooms, so be sure to make a reservation. The waiter was perfect...attentive but not overly, conversational when we wanted it. We ordered escargot, foie gras, trout and duck, wine and tucked into the 'just doughy enough' warm crusty bread. Celebrating a birthday, they were kind enough to serve us complimentary digestif drinks which topped off the evening. I would give the ambience and service a 5 and the food a 4.5. Note: Street parking. We parked on 4th Ave and walked to the restaurant. Please click the helpful button if you found this review useful in any way. Thanks!

Wonderful French Restaurant

We dined here for our third anniversary and then...got engaged here. A small, intimate place with 22 tables. Service is excellent. We ordered escargot and onion soup for appetizers....beautiful! Then the entrees of mussels and cassoulet (very hard to find in San Diego)...portions were huge and both entrees delicious. Strongly recommend La Bobbe Table!

C'est Magnifique !

One of our most favorite restaurants in San Diego! We come here whenever we visit San DIego. We have been there probably about 3-4 times since we discovered it in Fall of 2014. We were in San DIego for New Years and decided to have our NYE dinner there. They had a prix fixe menu…which was pretty consistent to their standard menu options. There are only 7 tables and bar seating so it's nice and cozy in a warm environment. Service is EXCELLENT. We were served by Yo who is very helpful and friendly. On this visit we did the wine pairing option. My partner started with the lobster bisque and I had the Tuna Tartar. You paired the bisque with a nice dry rose and he paired my tuna with a dry french white wine. We both had the steak frites which was excellent. Cooked to perfection. Yo selected a nice cabernet for the pairing. My partner had the CHocolate Mousse paired with a very good port wine, and I had the Tarte Tatin which was paired with a nice white wine. Reservations are suggested. On warm evenings, they also have two tables on the front patio/deck.

A taste of Paris

By LostintheUSA |

My friends wanted to go to a French restaurant to whet their taste buds for an upcoming trip to Paris. I and my husband had just returned so the taste and ambiance of Paris was still fresh in our minds. The dishes we ordered were duck confit, trout almadine, and pork chops. Everything was delicious! I would recommend this restaurant.

Intimate little french spot.

We had dinner there last week and it was excellent. The appetizer special was Fois Gras, loved it what else is there to say about Fois Gras! Followed tha with the Steak Frites, Steak was done perfectly and the fries where crunchy and tastey. It was a lot som got a to go box. The cocktails were good also I had a vodka marini with lemon twist, you kmow how hard it is to get a good one some times. My friend had the same except she had a margarita. I would put this place on your list of places to go when in San Diego.

We came with two friends for a pre-theater dinner. They had been many times but we had never been. We had an early reservation, and were the first ones there, therefore we had a choice of table. The restaurant is quite small with some outdoor seating, but we chose a table near the outside patio, but inside. We started with drinks, me with a Kir Royal (which I haven't had in ages), one friend with an Old Fashioned and one with wine. Between us we started with an onion soup (sublime), salad and salmon pate. Main courses included the duck confit and the entrecote steak. Both were fabulous. We were too full for dessert, although the dessert menu was certainly tempting. The whole restaurant is nicely furnished with clean lines. The food was great, although a bit pricey (but well worth it). We will be back. I recommend you give it a try.

Great breakfast!

By Jill D |

We came across this great little restaurant while out for a walk. Had a fabulous breakfast on the terrace then a great hike through bankers hill and Maple canyon (thanks to AllTrails)! Then a walk back through Balboa Park for a perfect Sunday morning! We had both a sweet (French toast with berries) and a savory (mushroom crepe) and were very happy with both!

Beautiful Intimate Dining Experience

By travelnstone |

In a time when restaurants seem to be becoming larger, louder and more crowded, La Bonne Table is a welcomed and beautiful exception. It is a small intimate dining room as you might experience in a better neighborhood of Paris. The lighting, decor and ambiance are perfect for a relaxed evening to savor a delicious dinner and good conversation with close friends. And the meals here are in fact fantastic. I have enjoyed both dinners and Sunday brunch numerous times and have always found the food exceptional. Highly recommended are the duck hash at brunch and their signature pork chop at dinner. Although you will not be disappointed with any of their dishes. To top it off, the staff is wonderful—attentive and and very friendly. Reservations are typically required. Enjoy!

Very nice intimate restaurant

We were there on a Monday when the Chargers were playing at home for Monday night football. we also eat early, and had the place to ourselves. The food was excellent, and the service was excellent with out any sort of pushiness or over attentiveness that you get sometimes. They gave us a mini baguette that was hot out of the oven. Very nice. I had escargot for an appetizer, my wife the French onion soup. The Escargot had little puff pastry rounds on top, and the requisite herb butter. Nice presentation and flavor. The onion soup was also very nice. My wife had a bucket of mussels in white wine. The portions were very generous. I had duck. It came with two legs, lentil "stew", a fig sauce (probably a port wine reduction with figs) and a small salad. I too was excellent. And the prices were very reasonable.

Strongly Recommended!

What a delightful restaurant, It was like being in a little bistro in the left bank of Paris. Small, unassuming room, fabulous service, lovely wine list and terrific food. We strongly recommend this place!
