All you'll ever need

By JinCollegeHill |

The line out the door tells you all you need to know about this place. The tamales, the tacos, the beans, the rice, I mean come on. This place is so good. Can't go wrong with anything at this place.

Ridiculously delicious

By Melissa A |

Don't let the line scare you. The line is because the order counter is right there when you walk in the door. You will get your food as soon as you order. And it will be worth however long you waited. EVERYTHING here is delicious. My favorite thing, however, were the rice and beans (with chorizo) they come with homemade flour tortillas. One of the best meals of my life.

Still awesome!

By Diane E |

Beans, rice, chorizo. Tortillas. Spoon. HOT sauce. Done. Nothing better! I think there are 3 other things you can get here but I've never bothered.

Great! Don’t forget cash

By EmVeee |

I happened on this gem a few years ago. Five amazing rolled tacos for five dollars. Got it to go and ate on the beach.

Lunch delicious and affordable

By Ephraim V |

Traditional fare!

By Jim B |

It has been some years since having lunch there. The first time was returning home after 4 years in the navy in August 60 years ago. The three of us were the only Gringos, the others nearby waterfront workers, later a couple groups of suits came in. With us being somewhat impoverished we were in the right place, and it was yummy traditional fare! Fast forward over the years with me working on the waterfront it never seemed to change, always great. My San Diego waterfront job eventually moved me to Seattle and my daughter and granddaughters went there today with a glowing texted report and pics, and yes, it is still the same. Comforting!

Best authentic Mexican tacos in San Diego

By TravelBuddy80 |

This place is amazing, run by 4 old Mexican ladies with the help of their family. Each taco is made fresh to order, including the taco shells. This place has amazing flavor abes really cheap too. They have to go or sit down. This place is so great that if you're not there early you'll be waiting in a long line. It's totally worth the wait though, it's that good. Cash only. Not commercial at all, family run and as authentic as being in Mexico.

Perfect for a casual meal

By Rita T |

If you're looking for a slice of authentic Mexican cuisine in San Diego, Las Cuatro Milpas is a must-visit. The portion sizes are generous, and you won't break the bank dining here. Don't let the line discourage you – it's all part of the adventure.

Tacos

By Kwaller29 |

My born and raised San Diego friend has been going here all her life...over 50 years and she was right darn good tacos. Authentic food, hole in the wall and BRING CASH Pork tacos—simple yet delicious. You could tasted the delicious corn tortillas. Rolled tacos—stick with the tacos they are better. These were nice and crunchy but they lacked flavor Tamales— I just don’t like tamales and still didn’t like these so... Rice and beans —were ok soupy beans sticky rice. Flour tortillas—were yummy and fresh. Corn tortillas—go first thing in the am or call ahead if you want to buy some to take.

The birthplace of California

The front desk manager of the hotel I stayed at told me this eatery, Las Cuatro Milpas, is one of the best homestyle Mexican food locations in San Diego. The line was super long and although I waited for an hour the smell kept me hooked and made me even hungrier. By the time I got inside I was excited. I ordered Chorizo con Huevo. A hearty Chili Soup with a side of Rice and Beans served with Flour Tortillas. I followed that with 4 Rolled Tacos which were pretty good. It's a deep-fried Corn Tortilla stuffed with Carnitas, topped with Queso Fresco, Salsa, and Shredded Cabbage. One bite into it and Meat Juice just spills out. There are plenty of tables to sit at. They have a small, cheap menu with a few key items and make food right in front of your eyes. Since they close at 3:00 PM, I suggest going before or after the lunch rush and bring cash!

Authentic Mexican fare

By Morey G |

We waited in a relatively long line, to get in, for a fairly short time. Well worth the wait! The rice and beans are delicious! The tamales, for me, were the hit! Made with less cornmeal, than in New England, there is more chicken filling and, the flavor is magnificent! The place is busy!

My daughter picked up lunch for me today at Las Cuatro Milpas. She bought beef rolled tacos. The taste was okay. I liked the sour cream, cheese, and lettuce. Tacos are big. I ate 3 out of 5. Salsa was not good..not spicy. A side of flour tortillas were very good. I ate here a few years ago and did not like it...not sure if I would get in line to order..just thankful, my daughter was thoughtful.

Tacos y tamales

By marshadt |

Food is excellent quality simple Mexican, like your abuelita would make! Great cheap food. You can really eat here for $5. $6 with a drink. Stand in line to place and receive your order from the counter - the line moves fast. Then find a place to sit and eat your mouth-watering tacos y tamales while you watch the ladies making piles and piles of tortillas in the back.

Authentic and incredibly delicious

By juliecheverri |

This place came recommended by friends and did not disappoint. My partner got taco rolls, a beef taco and the side of rice. Everything was amazingly delicious and it felt truly authentic given that most of the cliente and all of the staff is Mexican. The line was out the door! Two things to do note: 1) cash only 2) not a lot of veggie options. The only thing I was able to eat was a burrito with no Meat. Luckily they had beans that weren’t cooked with meat. And the rice was delicious and veggie friendly!

Delicious!

By Bellec1 |

Don't pass up this hole in the wall! Fantastic authentic food for cheap! Well worth the wait in line - enjoy everything on the menu!

Great authenic Mexican food, no frills, like grandma cooked it...

By jyee5127 |

An institution of casual Mexican cuisine in Barrio Logan, appropriate located near Chicano Park area under the Coronado bridge .... Does not get much better than that. No frill means no frills, just great cooking, lines of people, good value, with family type recipes which have stood the test of time. All the great menu items you expect there, tacos and burritos and Arroz (rice,) and frijoles (beans) (they probably still use lard) ha ha.... Don't watch fat or cholesterol on that day..... And hopefully the yummy tamales... And maybe the menudo soup on weekends... And more! Lunch spot, just allow plenty of time, great spot for a Saturday meal... Fresh hand made tortillas... And a cold one to chase it down.... Try it... And enjoy. El Niño .... . .

Best tortilla in town

By LChapie |

Went for the tortillas but had lunch at the same time. The tortillas are the best. We picked up a few dozen to take home. We also got the tacos for lunch which were authentic, and good, but the hot sauce was incredible. We ended up bringing a QT of that home too. Expect a line no matter when you go. We were there at 10:15, and the line was still long. It is definitely worth the wait... and experience.

Love the chorizo y huevos!

By elisan7777 |

This is a hole in the wall authentic Mexican eatery with a limited but delicious menu and the best tortillas to be had anywhere I've been. The rolled tacos, tamales and chorizo y huevos are standouts, IMHO. Get there early--there's a LINE! For good reason :-)

As legit As It Gets

By Ahems |

If you are looking for Gringo Style Mexican food you have come to the wrong place. This is the place for handmade tortillas, legit rice and beans, delicious tacos, burritos, rolled tacos it's all the real deal! The line can be agonizingly SLOW at lunch time, we waited 1 hour before making it in. It was worth every minute, the prices are awesome just like the food. It is cash only. We will be back again and again.

Five Words . . .

By Carrie H |

BEST. BURRITO. IN. SAN. DIEGO. That's it, folks. Get the pork burrito and support this family-run, San Diego staple. Just get there early as they usually sell out shortly after lunch; and don't be daunted by the inevitable line. Take my word for it - it's worth it.

South of the Border in San Diego!

By Charles A |

This is it, Mexican food in San Diego at it's authentic best. It doesn't get any better than Las Cuatro Milpas. If you enjoy real Mexican food and not just something that calls it's self" Mexican food "go to this establishment. You won't be disappointed. Just a word of caution. Their hot sauce is the real deal so don't be casual in it's use. This sauce will light you up. Delicious but REALLY hot. I loved it!

Authentic Mexican ( Really Authentic )

By yellowpixels |

First, any place that has a line as long as the one you will find here has got to be serving some pretty good stuff. Las Cuarto Milpas is really very good. Not fancy. You will likely rub elbows will a wide variety of people here. They close early and unfortunately do not serve guacamole. Nevertheless, highly recommended if you like Mexican food. Great tortillas too.

Great prices, good food

By Klawonn |

Went on a Saturday near 1:00. Waited about 30 minutes. Cash only! Inexpensive pricing and nothing fancy. Tamale was very good and I loved the beans. Rice was over cooked. I ordered a chicken burrito and it was very bland and a little dry. The flour tortillas are tender. Spouse had pork tacos and said they were good. Also enjoyed the chorizo in his beans and rice. And the hot sauce is packed with a smokey heat. Staff very friendly and helpful. It was cool to see them making the tortillas once we sat down in the middle room.

Love the homestyle cooking

By wethere |

The menu is short and simple and the food so tasty. There's usually a line out the door and remember to bring cash. The Chorizo, tacos, tamales, beans and rice are all great options. It's a family owned business and everyone is working hard behind the counter. The staff are friendly if you know what you want to order when you reach your turn as they want to keep the line moving along!

Authentic Eats

By PucksterColorado |

Went earlier (10:30 am) so no big line. LOVED the tamales, liked the pork rolled tacos. Thoroughly loved the experience, including taking a stroll through Chicano Park. Fun to watch the cooks behind the counter fry big batches of taco tortillas and massive pots of beans and sauce. This is the real deal and a bargain to boot.

OMG!!

By LoveEurope6 |

I love it! It's in a neighborhood you wouldn't want to be in at night but during the day you will find a line out the door waiting for this great authentic Mexican food. The line is often 30-45 min. In it you will find locals, tourists, city council people, lawyers, celebrities,.... The same ladies have been filling plates as long as I can remember. While short on personality they are long on character. Regardless, I would kill for the large rice and beans with three homemade tortillas and a diet Pepsi (no coke here- it's authentic, you know). Served on hard plastic plates and seating on picnic table benches...it rocks. Don't forget to grab the HOT sauce on the serving table as you get your food. It is hot! Use with caution. Often there is a chunk of "mystery meat"?! Don't ask, you probably don't want to know. There are also chopped onions and cilantro by the register. Just pike them in to your bowls or tacos. I also enjoy the tacos and tamales. The rolled tacos are just "asi-asi". The menudo also looks fantastic but...do you know what's in that stuff?! Personally, I can't do it but my friends love it. Rice, beans, tortillas, hot sauce. I'm good. About $5

Hit or miss place

By Jennifer L |

It's just okay. Maybe we didn't order the right stuff. Lunch lines are long and you shouldn't expect much service or atmosphere when you order and eat (no points deducted for that; I get that it's not a sit-down-and-order place). They make everything fresh, but unlike El Carrito down the street, it isn't made to order. The chicken burrito that I had was all right. The order of rice and beans is very lard-y and a high ratio of beans to rice. Handmade tortillas are very good quality. Two days later, they still don't break when you stuff them with taco filling and then eat. Rolled tacos came with cheese, guac, etc, but seemed to have more animal fat than animal meat. A mixed bag. Cash only and is cheap, but not a steal. My recommendation: Go down the street to El Carrito where there's no line, the food is made to order, and it's absolutely bursting with flavor and excellence.

The most amazing tacos...

By Monika G |

This place is a gem, I came to San Diego just for their taco as last time I was here the line was just too long and I'd miss my flight back then. This time I planned wisely, line wasn't bad at all 10 min top, and I got the most amazing juicy taco human can imagine!! I also got a tamale, chorrizo con huevo, and a burrito, and I ate it all by myself (and I'm a skinny woman who could easily survive a few days on this much food). You can't go wrong with this place. And the ladies who work there are super nice.

The place that feels like Grandma is the chef

By Albertine_Disparue |

The place that feels like your grand mother is cooking- few items on the menu , all delicious. Nice people behind the counter too, it felt very “home”

Authentic Mexican fare

By clayncali |

If you want the real deal Mexican food, head to Las Cuatro Milpas. The line might be out the door but the line moves quickly and it's definitely worth the wait. They make tortillas onsite and the food tastes like someones Grandma made it. We had tamales with rice/beans, chicken tacos and drinks for less than $11. Take the time to go...it's worth it. Cash only.....

Best Mexican in town

By kfsd |

For maybe 6 to 7 bucks, the food is extraordinary. Suggest going closer to 1 pm as line is long. Highly recommend tamales.

SO DARN GOOD

By N0str0m0 |

One of my favorite restaurants of all time, all places. The Mexican food is terrific. The atmosphere is hole-in-the-wall treasure. There are pictures of police officers on the wall dating back decades, which appear to be family members. Their specialty is a bowl of beans and rice. The burritos (chicken or pork) are great. There is always a line out front, but no worries - it moves fast. Several folks work right behind the counter as you walk in, making the food within two feet of your salivating mouth. Some of the tables are located in the kitchen where cooks are making tortillas. This is my default place for a lunch time burrito. Some of the tastiest food with best ambiance on the planet.

Best Mexican food ever!

By JintheCleave |

Stopped in here while in San Diego with some coworkers. I was impressed from the tortillas being made right in front of everyone to the flavor of "everything". Great place!

Yummy food and fast service

By Vwlove |

We came here around 1pm today (Thursday). The line went out the door, but the service was surprisingly fast. The workers that helped us with our order spoke both Spanish and English. Regardless of how busy it was, they were patient when we were a little slow with deciding on what to order since it was our first time here. The rice, beans, and tortillas are some of the best I've ever had. Prices are very reasonable. We will be back here next time we are in San Diego. Tip: BRING CASH!

Great food at a reasonable price.

By Russ S |

Hand made tortillas, fresh beans, fresh chorizo and a home style atmosphere. There is always a line but it moves faster than a line at Subway. Best authenticate Mexican food this side of the border. Tacos, burritos, tamales, beans, rice, chorizo and hand made fresh tortillas. WOW! Less than $10 for a drink, two tamales, a small bowl of beans and chorizo. If you are in Sand Diego and want a real treat find this place and enjoy!

The line is part of the experience, make this a must stop

By Dan D |

Stopped here on my last day in SD. Glad I did. I got a small Chorizo Con Huevo and a burrito, 8.75 total. I'm a big eater and that was a lot of food. Spicy, and flavorful. Their home made salsa (not like ANY salsa I have ever had, and not no store bought brand) brings the hot flavor to a new level. This was just good food, I don't care where you're from. The line spread down the bloc two buildings from the entrance, but moved so quickly, you don't notice (total 20 min). The assembly line efficiency is a wonder to watch. CASH ONLY.

OMG

By SRWelch00 |

Most satisfying, authentic, Mexican food I've had in a long time ... well worth the (minor) wait. Inexpensive and good!

Traditional?

By Johnny Trekkie |

I'm pleading guilty...I've been living in San Diego for almost 20 years now...and just earlier today I finally managed to eat at this legendary San Diego Hole-in-the-Wall restaurant. At 1PM on this beautiful Saturday afternoon, there was a line out the door of about 20 or so people. Don't be afraid though, unlike Disneyland the line moves fast and less than 15 minutes I was able to see the hardworking Tias and Abuelas cooking away. A few minutes later a friendly Tia took my order of 2 chicken and 2 pork tacos for reasonable $1.75 each. I also grabbed a bag of a dozen flour tortillas($3.50)...which absolutely are the best flour tortillas you can be in San Diego. The tacos...they're pretty good. Very traditional and simple: deep fried corn tortilla with lettuce and cheese, add some salsa...but not exciting. Did I order the wrong thing? Maybe I should try the tomales, chorizo, and rolled tacos next time? Not sure when I'll be back as I live too far to be a regular. But those flour tortillas? Gawd damn...they're warm, creamy carb heaven in your mouth!

Great old school food

By James C |

Had read about this place- found a place to park about a block away. Maybe 20 people in line- which took about 15-20 minutes to get to the counters. Had the pork rolled tacos, large huevos chorizo and 2 waters...$12!! Really good- great tortillas - watch the hot sauce- it is spicy!

Still talking about this food a week later

By SchruteFarms |

The moment we walked in, we knew we were in for a meal to remember. No frills...no a/c...three ladies making the food right behind the counter...workers near the back making fresh tortillas. I have to give some credit to a couple of kind gentlemen (regulars at this restaurant) who told us exactly what we should get. I could live on tamales so I had to have that but we also got the rolled tacos. One gigantic tamale, rice and beans. 5 rolled tacos, two waters......less than $20.00. Yes....less than $20.00!! You're paying that for one meal at a chain restaurant and it's not nearly as good as this place. You can have your Michelin star restaurants. Give me this kind of food any...day...of...the....week!

GREAT FOOD

By Jonathan G |

Chorizo and tacos are excellent. Started coming here in early 1980s and still come back every time we're in town.

Yummy food

By hopeful1949 |

Had chicken tacos and rolled tacos. Yes we waited in line to enjoy this food. Line moves very fast, so don't give up. Enjoyed looking through window to see the tacos being made fresh from frying tortillas to stuffing taco shell. Plenty seating. Best Mexican food in San Diego.

Best tortillas in town since 1933!

By AlaskaScubaGirl |

This family run restaurant has been in business at this location since 1933. The lines are long but move quickly. Off peak hours are shorter. They sell flour and corn tortillas by the dozen for those lucky people who live in San Diego. We had tacos, tamale, beans and rice. I felt like I was at a family party. Everything was so good! Very clean and homemade, not greasy. I'm still dreaming of the beans. A tip: It's a small menu with people waiting behind you, so be ready to order when asked and don't forget, it's CASH only! Open till 3 pm, closed Sundays.

Best authentic mexican food

By Shawn S |

This place is off the beaten path and looks like a dive but the line out the door says it all. The food is amazing! The price is really reasonable and the portions are quit large. We try to eat here whenever we come to SD.

Simple great Mexican food

By Captcaffeine |

Prepare to stand in line. This is a CASH only place. Prepare to be wowed by the simple yet delicious food. No booze. Just great Mexican food. If I could, I would eat there every day while we're on vacation

Barrio Landmark - great experience

By San Diego Tourists |

My husband grew up in this neighborhood and remembered as a child going with his mother to get menudo. They took a kitchen pot, buy menudo or chorizo and walk back home. There used to be a store next door that's now part of the restaurant. The daughters and grand daughters run it now. Go before 10 am. After that a line up does form. I've seen celebrities and sports figures waiting in line. The menu is simple and everything is made there. Its cafeteria-style ordering and then take the tray of goodies to a table and enjoy!! We have met wonderful locals waiting in line. We see new customers ordering the chorizo AND tacos and know they won't be able to finish it all. Prepare to enjoy the food and people!!

Quick lunch

By Steve D |

Best pork tacos in the world. Literally standing in line next to docs and lawyers in the barrio. Get there early. When they are gone they close the doors.

First Timer

By Ceaser M |

As other reviewers have commented, there was a line when I got there. No worries, I was eating in about 15 minutes. I got 2 tacos, 2 tamales, and beans /rice. Too much food. I could not eat it all. If you want a neighborhood feel, this is your place. Cash only.

Authentic and Delicious!

By SnackAndJill |

We recently went to Comic-Con (it was awesome!!) Since San Diego is so close to Mexico, we originally planned on taking a trip down to Tijuana for some authentic Mexican food. We weren't able to make that happen on this trip, but that doesn't mean we didn't find some awesome authentic Mexican food anyway! I found Las Cuatro Milpas while searching Yelp and Urbanspoon. The reviews looked great, so we decided to give it a shot...and we are so glad we did! Everything is ordered a la cart, which is good for me since I wanted to try a bunch of things! We got a pork burrito, pork tacos, rolled pork tacos, and rice and beans. The rice and beans are literally the best I have had in my life!! There were bits of egg in there and the whole thing had this amazing flavor! All of the pork items had amazing flavor and I really loved their tortillas. They are homemade and delicious. I also need to mention how great the house hot sauce is. I loved this stuff. It's not too hot and had a wonderful flavor. I put it on everything I ate! Verdict: Loved it!!! It was 100% authentic and the food was some of the best Mexican I have had. If you are in the area, you have to try them out. I know that every time I visit San Diego, I will stop in more than once!!

Home style food.

By yadayada8673509 |

Will texture again and again. Order tortillas in advance if your wanting them to go, call the day before to order.

Worth the wait

By Rbb599 |

This place is so good, the thing to get is the pork tacos, we also got a tamale with rice and beans. Waited in line on a Thursday at noon for about 30 minutes. It’s hard to find quality food for a great price.you certainly get that here. If you are near Barrio Logan go.

Best Mexican Food in all San Diego

By Alex Mitchell |

Genuine, and so freaking delicious! Worth the long line (but it moves very quickly) everything is good, you can't go wrong.

MUST. COME. BACK.

By Kim Van Nguyen |

I've lived in San Diego all my life and have heard about this place for as long as I can remember. I've always wanted to try it but Barrio Logan is out of the way for me. I have friends from the east coast this weekend and we decided to go for it. While the line was long, it moved quickly. The menu is limited, but it makes decision-making super easy for indecisive people like me. I had the chicken tacos with rice and beans. OH. MY. GOD. The flour tortillas that come with the rice and beans are TO. DIE. FOR. I don't know what kind of sorcery they use to make them, but even if it's the souls of dead children, they're the best damn tortillas I've ever had. The three of us are massive authentic Mexican meals for $25! BEST deal on town! I love having abuelita working behind the counter - it feels like I'm in a tiny taco shop in Mexico but I didn't have to leave town. I can't believe it took me so long to finally get here but I'm so glad I did. Can't wait to come back!

Simple menu, Outstanding food !!

By Cameron Moore |

A true testament to the proportionate relationship between the quality of Mexican food and its price. The menu is a little limited. The atmosphere is "authentic". It is not a full service restaurant, however everyone is friendly and helpful.

Always Very Good

By Sean M |

Every few weeks I go and stand in line at this Barrio Logan landmark to get some home made Mexican cuisine that is slow cooked and served up by the third generation of the Estudillo family to run the restaurant. They know what they're doing. Everything is fresh, it's served hot, and the portions are big enough for any appetite. Best tortillas anywhere. No one else even begins to compare. They close at three in the afternoon, so get there sometime before then if you're going to go. There's nearly always a wait, usually about 15 minutes in line and possibly more - if you get there around noon you'll compete with all the people that work in the area and eat here regularly - but the wait is always worth it. In San Diego and want great Mexican food? Go to one of the tourist traps in Old Town and leave Las Cuatro Milpas to us locals!

Best Tacos Ever!

By Jim H |

I was on a business trip to San Diego this week and my colleague took me here. Luckily the line wasn't long, but it quickly formed after we ordered. The menu is short, so there isn't much to choose from, but I was told their beef tacos were exceptional. I ordered three beef tacos, chorizo and beans. The food was prepared quickly as I made my way through the line to the cashier. At the cash register, I am able to add on extra cilantro, onions and their spicy home made hot sauce. I have eaten tacos all across our country and in Mexico. When I sampled this taco, I felt I went to heaven. The flavor was unbelievable. I can see why there was a line outside the door of eager customers waiting for their chance to order. But it wasn't just the tacos that were good, the chorizo and beans were also fantastic. I complimented my colleague in suggesting this place. I never tried anything this good before. As we sat down and ate, I noticed in the back of the restaurant there were staff members making tortillas from scratch. Everything here is fresh and tasty. If I could go there every day I would. Highly recommended!

No frills Mexican food

By cathi r |

Quite simply the best. To avoid a long line go at about 10...I am not joking. The only other place I dream about is The Shed in Santa Fe. Lunch for two under $13. I have been going for 15 years, ordering the same exact thing and the price is the same. It looks a little scary, but worth the wait.

Best tacos ever

By Wanda R |

Most authentic Mexican food I’ve ever eaten in the this area. The tacos were amazing. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Yummm yummm yummy food! ! !

My Favorite Restaurant in San Diego

By Shannon G |

I work in San Diego three or four times a year, and on each trip go out of my way to have lunch at Las Cuatro Milpas. The tacos and tamales are indescribably amazing, and the rice and beans with chorizo is to die for. Everything is made fresh, including the taco shells. The line out the door moves quickly, and the restaurant, with it's spare decor, is all about the food. Should not be missed, and for visitors on a budget, you can eat a giant meal for well under $10.

WOW, Wow, one of the best tasting Tacos I ever Had! Really, also the Chorizo rice and Beans was UnBelievable! Delish!! Not Nothing Fancy about this place, it's where the Locals Eat and might have a Bit of a Wait, line goes Fast and I Promise you will Not be Disappointed!!

Tacos

By Bob D |

We had outstanding tacos at a very reasonable price. The beans, chorizo and rice was excellent. The accompanying tortillas were phenomenal We returned again the following day for tacos

Unique breakfast

By Arkobello |

I loved their chorizo con huevos. It was well flavored and portions are huge. Ask for the condiments to make it even better. I just wished they offered more than one homemade hot sauce!

Delicious!

By Lisa L |

I ordered the beans, rice, and tamale plate for $5. It was delicious and enough beans and rice for 2 people. It also came with 2 hot, flour tortillas. Everything was delicious. I would definitely go again! Street parking was hard to find so I parked at the small shopping plaza at the end of the street. Be aware that they close at 3 pm.

I Dont Know

By HHD |

I have been to tons of Mexican joints and TEX MEX foods places in America and the world over. This place came the most recommended, especially for its Rice, Beans & Chorizo & Tamales / Tacos. There is a massive line up outside and its a very unique and cool joint. However, i do not know if I can fully agree with the taste. It seemed all too normal and run of the mill (from taste). Perhaps my taste in Mexican is not developed enough to fully understand it.

Good food but severely overrated and over hyped

By saintba |

I've been to tons and tons of Mexican places around San Diego. And while the tacos and beans here are good I don't think it was anything GREAT. As others mentioned, the menu is very limited here. I don't mind dumpy places in dumpy neighborhoods. In fact, some of my all time favorite restaurants have been like that and I don't mind at all. Yes, there was a line when we arrived. We went on a Wednesday afternoon around 12:30 PM and a line but it moved fairly quickly. Just the board above with the 5 or 6 items (tacos, burritos, tamales, rice and beans). They sell packages of tortillas which we bought to bring home. I got the beef tacos and my wife got the chicken tacos and the meat was very good and tender and moist. But the shells were super greasy and the tortillas weren't that great. Maybe it was just our order but it still tasted raw (this is the side that comes with the dish). It tasted doughy. These people must be making a fortune because it's just like a production line of them serving people walking through the line. The rent must be almost nothing. The prices are fairly cheap so it's a quick and affordable meal. I just think it's overhyped when Zagats is calling it the best Mexican in San Diego. Yes, it IS authentic. Everyone there is Mexican. They only take cash here and no credit cards. No doubt a good taco but it's definitely overhyped. If I was in the area, I'd maybe stop by again but I wouldn't drive out here just to come here like other places I go to. I much prefer some other places. YMMV.

Long line, great authentic food

Las Cuatros Milpas always has a long line snaking out the door, but that's a little deceptive. The food line is right inside the door, so don't be turned away by a long line. Plus, there is tons of seating inside in several different rooms. This is true authentic Mexican food in a no frills cash-only kitchen in the heart of the barrio. They have a small menu with low prices. All kinds of people wait in line for these delicious tacos.

Best Mexican Ever!

By JoJo |

We had 2 burritos, 5 fried taco rolls and a bowl of rice. With 2 canned drinks, the bill was $21. Cash only. Unbelievable price. The food was delicious. We went at 1pm on a Saturday and only had a 10 minute wait. Plenty of places to sit once we got our food. Best Mexican ever!

Didn't know what to expect but was very satisfied with our choice!

By Weston67 |

I could not understand why there was a line 15-20 people deep outside the restaurant, but once I stepped inside I fully understood. Everything is made fresh right behind the counter, from the tamales and tortillas to the chorizo and beans. They specialize in rolled tacos but everything I ordered was made to perfection. Don't forget the little cup of fire to dip your tacos in. Beware....it is HOT! But excellent!

Authentic, Affordable, and Delicious!

By Antoinette |

As a San Diego native, this is the place to go for authentic Mexican food; our family has frequented this establishment for over 30 years. Everything is handmade - tortillas, tamales, salsa, etc - and is downright delicious. The prices are extremely reasonable and the restaurant is only open certain days of the week during lunch hours, so be prepared to wait in a fast-moving line (hint: peek at the menu in advance so you know what you want to order before you get in line). Those who expect Milpas to mirror the service, price, décor, and taste of a stereotypical chain restaurant will be disappointed. But those searching for authenticity and taste, as well as those who want to support a long-standing small business, will find a new favorite spot in Las Cuatro Milpas.

Unforgettable Tortillas

By Lup104 |

I was shock when I saw a long line of people waiting before noon. I was in the restaurant after 15 minutes of waiting. The rolled tacos were recommended by the staff and they were excellent. I had the best tortillas in San Diego. They were so tasty and unforgettable. This place takes cash only but the price is very reasonable.

Awesome.

By Jared L |

This place was amazing. Go early, or after 1:30 to avoid super long lines. The food is authentic, and chicken stuff was amazing, and the chorizo. The setting is hole in the wall, but the food was among the best mexican I have ever had.

Rolled Tacos!

By SolarT |

A San Diego Mexican food institution. Why you want to go. Tasty, authentic, freshly made and inexpensive traditional Mexican food. Keep in mind this is a very casual restaurant and there is usually a long line. The line moves quick and the menu is simple, tacos, tamale, burrito and sides. My favorite is the rolled tacos.

Best tortillas ever!

By romyntheigorot |

BEST TORTILLAS! Even though I'm born and raised in SD, this was my second time here. I never would go because of the line, there's always a line especially on the weekends but it can go pretty fast, always depends on who is in line. I went around 12:45pm on a week day and stood in line maybe for about 15 minutes. The food is worth it though because it is delicious. I love their tortillas and I can just eat it plain. Their tacos are delicious and are big as well. The chorizo con huevos is delicious and it comes with tortillas. So once you get inside after waiting in line, they will ask you what you want and you can see them make it in front of you. The kitchen is right in front of you as you keep going down the line. The ladies working are super nice and sweet as well and they get the job done! They set out salsas/hot sauce for you and you go to the cashier. They only take CASH so remember that when you go. Then you can sit wherever you want, there are two sides you can sit at. It's a very casual place to just eat, talk, and chill. If you have leftovers, just go to where the cash register is and they have to go boxes, ones for liquid or soup type of items and one for your salsa/hot sauce as well. I would definitely come here again especially to get a dozen of those tortillas. Parking - street parking so wherever you get a spot. If you're waiting in line with a group and you are far back, some of you can just stroll through Chicano Park and admire the beautiful murals and history of Chicano Park and Barrio Logan. I would definitely take some time to walk around Chicano Park during the day.

The Real Thing...Don't Miss IT! Don't waste time at a chain!

By dcmalo |

Waited in line, met some nice people, ordered rolled tacos, bean burrito, chorizo rice and beans, and a taco, and dove face first into some of the best, most authentic, bring-me-back-to-Mexico, dream about food I can remember putting in my mouth. If I get back there this trip, I might just go with one or the other burrito OR rice and beans and order a second taco...the special spicy sauce was a perfect accompaniment, as were the chopped cilantro and onions for the rice and beans. The real thing. Very casual dining, in not the best neighborhood, but that's all relatively speaking...we did see San Diego cops in action complete with rifles and dogs upon leaving the restaurant...nothing like arriving in the middle of a bust with possibility of shoot-outs! Located in Barrio Logan nearby the Bridge. Containers for leftovers provided. Your eyes WILL be bigger than your stomachs!

A real taste of street, low budget, popular mexican food

By wade C |

Since I grew up in Mexico, but have lived in San Diego for more than 25 years. I have thought that in order to find authentic Mexican food I needed to travel South of the Border, and I do... for gourmet Mexican cuisine, real tacos, burritos, mole, Sinaloa style sea food, etc., you must go to Mexico. However, San Diego has a very unique low budget, ultra popular, place that offers no more than a handful of dishes that they prepare as you pick them. You need to be prepared to go to Barrio Logan, make a half-a-block line (moves fast), quickly place your order, pay to who seems to be the lady owner behind an old, small cash register, choose the beverage (pop soda) that is available (not exactly what you want), and enjoy a ver delicious, authentic Mexican food seating in metal folding chairs, shared metal folding tables with barely a plastic cover, in rooms with no decoration whatsoever. Enjoy watching their gigantic blender, possibly 40 years old sitting in one of the otherwise dinning rooms. This is not recommendable for the snob restaurant aficionado!!!

Good hole-in-the-wall Mexican food

By AAGeorgiapeach |

I recently stopped by Las Cuatro Milpas for lunch on a visit to San Deigo. The menu is very limited, the portions are very large. If I lived in the area I would go to this restaurant at least once a month or so. You need to arrive early as there is usually a line.

True Mexican atmosphere

By skelley53 |

Watch your food b made! Open airs eating, with family style group seating. Food will spoil you for any other Mexican place. Can't wait to come back!!

CONSISTENTLY HEAVENLY...

By Global_Travel_Star |

Thank you Nati. Thank you Petra. These two patrons started it all long ago. I first ate at this incredible landmark over 50 years ago, and I have had the pleasure of eating here long after their heirs have continued the tradition. I was born in this city but life has taken me far from home. Las Cuatro is a must pilgrimage whenever I am in San Diego. I have been all over the world...and no place does justice to simple, low-cost, good quality Mexican food like this "World Famous" spot. (World Famous because I have testified to people on 4 continents about the Chorizo con Huevos, Tamales, and Tacos! Oh, and the best FLOUR TORTILLAS on the planet!!!

Get the rice and beans. CASH ONLY

By Arielle A |

We heard about this literal hole in the wall from friends who live in San Diego. It's not in the best neighborhood (although that could just be my take on things), but we drive there and parked no problem. There will be a line out the door, but don't worry. It moves relatively fast, and it's totally worth it. We asked the people in line what we should get, and they recommended the rolled tacos, the chicken tacos, and the rice and beans. done. Once you get inside, it can be a little intimidating. There isn't really a menu- there's maybe 5 items on a little board above the kitchen. We were glad we asked in line what to get. The woman who takes your order yells it back to the woman manning the stove, and you get your food. Pretty simple and easy. Then you pay, remember it's cash only, and can choose to sit inside, there are plenty of tables. Let me say, the fresh tortillas given with the rice and beans were otherworldly. They sure don't make tortillas like that in Philadelphia. I wish we had asked for extra on the side. Plus, the rice and beans were delicious. The small was the perfect size for two people. The rolled tacos were good, not great. However, the regular chicken tacos were delicious. We also got a tamale, which was delicious as well. We ate around 11am and weren't hungry again until dinner time, 8 hours later. Plus, all that plus two drinks for $15? You seriously can't go wrong. All in all, this restaurant should definitely be on everyone's list of places to try. It was worth the wait.

Great Food, But a Real Dump

By Heston Y |

This place is a real dump. Although, that's where you typically find the best Mexican food. If you wonder where your old lawn chairs disappear to? This might be the destination. Aside from the lack of comfort and tables that you're just hoping are clean enough, they're food will not disappoint. The food is enough to help you forget your environment. Do not pass up on the beans with rice in them. Soooo gooood!

Great deal on real food

By Swo89 |

With a menu limited to tacos, rolled tacos, burritos, and tamales, Las Cuatro Milpas is able to put out really tasty food at great prices.. We arrived at 11:00 and the line was already down the block. This isn't five star dining, but it was absolutely delicious and for only $5.00 it is one of the best deals in town. Everyone left happy and with a full belly.

Old School Mexican Food Like No Other

By Marciano F |

This restaurant was introduced to me by family who used to live in the area. I don't think i would have needed and reference, the wonderful aroma of the food would have drawn me to it eventually! I have tried much of the menu in my 5 years of visiting. The handmade flour tortillas are like my mother used to make and I am happy for it. When they use it for their burritos doubles the fresh taste of the food. A must-have is the bowl of arroz and frijoles that have some "kick" to it. I could go on but you only need to show up and see the downtown business folk lined up for a block along side the locals will tell you everything!

Trust me---brave the lines!

By Tricia E |

Quite possibly, the best tortillas I've ever had. Wow. You feel like you're in on the secret while you wait for passage into this "hole in the wall," and you are rewarded with deliciousness. And $23 for a lunch for a family of four, and we carried away two cartons of leftovers!

Good Mexican Food

By Commodore2010 |

Authentic, low key, very reasonably priced, and large portions that really fill you up. Recommend the chorizo bowl with rice. Try the small which we have found to look small but very filling with the two translucent flour tortillas. If you're really hungry, place a tamale in your bowl with the chorizo. You will not be disappointed with anything on the simple menu. This is a restaurant with a long history and favorite with locals. You never know what civic leader or politico will be there. During most days the line will run down the block so get there early. The line moves fairly fast and the aroma from the kitchen will stimulate the senses while waiting. Don't expect a fancy place, this is bare bones, family run, family style seating establishment that people come to for the food.

Best Mexican Food EVER!

By Eve S |

5 items on the menu and each is DELICIOUS!!! Seriously, I have had everything on the menu and find myself craving Milpas all the time. I have never not seen a line and there is a reason. This tastes like you are in someones kitchen eating the best Mexican food ever. My personal favorite are the rolled tacos (not your typical rolled tacos) big and full of meat. Also not to be missed is the chorizo con huevos which is served with a wonderful homemade lard tortilla...oh my goodness! Cash only so come prepared. For five bucks you can leave full and happy.

Mexican in SanDiego

By Mukul |

Nice small place and a long queue for visitors to order and get in. Simple and peaceful place with authentic food. I fact a Mexican suggested us this place and we were not disappointed.

Listen closely to people in line. Be friendly and they will help you

By Matt U |

Listen closely to people in line and in front of you. Ordering is fairly quick paced and you need to know what you want. Get it all! Very good, home-style food. Lots of families and regulars in line. All walks of life. Food is worth the wait. As legit as I’ve had in SD.

Delicious tamales!

By The Traveling Pair |

Delicious tamales and reasonably priced. I read reviews that they had the best flour tortillas. They aren't bad but I have had better. The menu is simple and well priced. The humdrum looking restaurant looks like it hasn't changed since it first opened. It is busy and there can be a wait. It closes early and on time, no exceptions.

Worth the wait in line.

By Robert C |

One thing for certain - There WILL be a line. I don't care what day of the week or time of day. There is a good reason why - they serve the best damn Mexican food there is. It's a true hole-in-wall place. Their menu is limited, but I think it falls under the category, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Everything they make (and oh, by the way, you can see them making the fresh stuff right in back) is delicious. The hot sauce, while hot, is out of the world. This is not a sit down waitress place, you order and receive your food while in line. It's extremely low cost and a good value. To me, it's more than the food - it's an experience. I just love to sit in back and watch the ladies make the tortillas (and all the food) fresh. Last thing - I believe they are cash only. AND if you want fresh tortilla's you must get there early, they are sold out b4 11:00 AM.

Good food

By espejo25 |

Good authentic rolled tacos and flour tortillas, beans and rice were good. It was good, but not amazing. Nothing I couldn’t get at home in Northern California. But worth trying.

Worth It!

By rmagac |

Best bean burrito I’ve ever had and the hot sauce was amazing!! Homemade everything- line out the door but worth the wait!!

Been coming here for 50 years

By Itmustbeslim |

This is THE place for authentic Mexican Chorizo and tacos in the city. Sure you can go to any number of fast food Mexican places ending in berto all over the city but you HAVE to try this place at least once. I'll tell you a story. My 100% Mexican grandfather came to San Diego with the USN during the Korean war. He walked in to this place and my family has been coming here ever since. We love this place. My advice to you newbs. If you come during peak, prepare to wait 40 minutes and be prepared for crappy parking. But stick it out. Order a small bowl of Chorizo with rice and 2 Chicken tacos. Make sure you get some onions and cilantro. DO NOT FORGET THE HOMEMADE TORTILLAS, they are to die for. This is your first time, sit in one of the cafeteria style seating areas and enjoy some local company. Remember, Barrio Logan just looks shady, but you will be fine. Don't forget to bring cash. Once you have been there a few times start trying everything else, we get burritos here every so often and we special order Tamales every Christmas. The same women have been working the front counter since I was a toddler...do they age? Please don't come here because the lines get longer every year, but it is OH SO WORTH THE WAIT.

Popular local spot

By satobt |

This is a popular local lunch spot in San Diego. There is usually a line outside the door during lunchtime. No carne asada here. They are known for carnitas instead. The menu is pretty small but food is good. The rolled tacos and chorizo con huevo soup are popular.

Quick late lunch on a Tuesday no line!

By inmomtraveler |

We landed in San Diego for a conference and had a travel/free day. Decided to hit this joint first and at 2 on a Tuesday no line! Pork tacos are the way to go. Good tamale great rice and beans with chorizo. Cheap and good food.

A must for LUNCH!

By DesignsForTravel.com |

This was like being in Mexico, with a group of women cooking over a hot stove. Everything seemed to be homemade and everything was delicious. I limit the gluten eating and these homemade white flour tortillas were outstanding and worth it!

Authentic high quality low cost great tastes

By Seth G |

This place deserves the line it always has in front of it, but that line moves very quickly because the service is fast and the menu is simple we highly recommend the roll tacos, five per order, and the tamale. The tacos are big and flavorful but a little dry unless you add some salsa. Two can eat their full of great tasting food for about twelve dollars.

Good, not great.

By gus2016866 |

We had to try this legendary place in Barrio Logan. We waited in line which moved quickly. It was fun chatting with locals and tourists while in line. In the door and you see hard working ladies making food right in front of you. It’s cafeteria style ordering and cash only so be prepared. The beans were outstanding. We also had the rolled tacos, regular tacos and a tamale. The helpings were very generous. The beef was tender. The flavor just wasn’t there. They’re definitely better Mexican food options in the Barrio and the SD area. A few recommendations, Orlandos, Roberto’s, Taco El G, De Cabeaz El Unico. If you really want to try Milpas, go for it. It wasn’t bad, it just didn’t live up to the hype.

Holy hole in the wall of goodness

By Sabina M |

Place is solely opened for lunch hours. We were there no later than 1130 and a line out the door. The line moves quick and it lives up to the hype. The fried tacos and rice and beans are to DIE for. It's cheap, quick, and out of this world authentically delicious. It literally kept me full all day until 9 at night. Place is a total must stop for out of this world Mexican. Don't be thrown off by its appearance it's unbelievable.

Authentic and scrumptious!

By Michael O |

We visited based on a local tip to try great local Mexican food. What a wonderful tip as the people preparing our meal were so warm and the food was delicious! I can see why locals line up for this establishment! Wonderful food and really an experience!

Simple, exceptional food!

By Lemurcatta |

Visiting my daughter in San Diego for Thanksgiving, she suggested that we stop at Las Cuatro Milpas for lunch after my plane landed. The line to get in was long, even at 11:00 am -- but no one was discouraged because the food inside is well worth the wait. You order at the counter, and then either take the food away or find a table inside to eat. As you move inside you can see everything being made in front of you including the tortillas --- fresh fresh fresh. My daughter swears by the Chorizo con Huevos, and it was fantastic! I ordered a taco and tamale made with their shredded meat. I've been eating Mexican food in the Southwest for more than 40 years, and this is the best I've ever had. The ladies are friendly and helpful. We took our lunch to a park on the water and ate at a picnic table. I'd come back anytime -- and will definitely request a re-visit next time I'm in San Diego!

Worth a visit

By MiltParker_CO |

Went to Las Cuatro Milpas on the recommendation of a friend and reading the reviews on Trip Advisor. It is in the Logan Bario section of San Diego and I would have no problem returning during the day. They close at 3p. As someone who has grown up in West Texas/New Mexico and lived a lot of years in California I think I know mexican food. The food here is good enough to suggest a visit. The tamales, I would pass on. Too much corn meal compared to meat. I like my outer layer thin and not overwhelming the meat. The tacos and beans are spot on and this would be my recommendation. Skip the rice. Service is cafeteria style so the line out the door moves relatively quickly.

Best tacos

By Resort281592 |

I still dream about Las Cuatro Milpas. Best tacos in Southern California. Must have a small chorizo order and 2 tacos. When paying the cashier, ask for a dozen tortillas to go. This will make the rest of your week and finish off the leftovers you will have to take home. Beware- cash only and there is always a line. Well worth the wait!

Excellent, Authentic, Mexican Restaurant.

By Bob N |

If you're looking for a hole-in-the-wall with excellent, authentic, mexican food, this is the place to visit in San Diego. I'm sure there are lots of other places to go, but you can't go wrong with this choice. I went there recently while visiting my wife's family in San Diego and I will probably go back everytime I visit. I loved the tacos, they are greasy, but oh so good! The tamale and the beans and rice were great and the tortillas were the best that I've had. Bonus, the food is cheap! When you're finished, head next door to the mexican bakery for some treats to take home with you. You won't have room to eat them immediately after your meal.

Bland, tourist trap

By Janelle W |

Here's the thing: in any mid-size or larger American city, there is a significant enough immigrant population that authentic Mexican tacos and tamales are rather easy to find at taco trucks or any restaurant in a Mexicantown/barrio neighborhood. So LCM's "hole-in-the-wall" barrio-type "experience" that everyone here is raving about, is really not all that uncommon. And certainly not worth the wait. I let a friend drag me here after our uber driver raved about it. When I saw the line, I was ready to bail -- Mexican is not a cuisine that can ever be so significantly better than my favorite roach coaches, to make it worth waiting in line for. But my buddy insisted, and I decided to be nice. Suspicions were confirmed -- not worth the wait, nor the walk from the trolley. Food was painfully bland -- my tamale+rice+beans bowl was a heavy pile of sludge that no only lacked salt, but also lacked a depth or richness of flavor at all. The biggest turn-off to me was that the tacos are deep-fried. Not just the taquitos (they call 'em "rolled tacos"). But the actual tacos. Hence, it is impossible to get a genuine Mexican taco here, since the whole thing -- meat included -- is thrown into a vat of hot oil. That did not add flavor, just grease. On the plus side: cheap, large portions.

Long wait lines but worth the experience

By Gloria L |

The long lines made me wonder what was happening. A lady told me she has been going to this restaurant for 40 years. I thought if I returned later the lines would get shorter. Wrong conclusion. The fare is simple but plentiful, very tasty, and reasonable. I got chorizo con huevos but got a tiny amount with a lot of rice and beans. The rolled tacos were good.

No place like Las Cuatro Milpas

By Captcaffeine |

Prepare to wait at lunchtime. Bring your appetite. Bring your cash--cash only!! There is nothing like it-- simple pure Mexican food- staff are friendly--dining areas are simple and clean. Everyone should eat here at least once-- lucky us, we came here twice in 6 days!

Real Deal

By BusyVirginia |

Limited menu, low prices, long and fast moving line. Parking limited (hope you can parallel park). Visited with co-workers from all over the country, and everyone tried to clean their bowls or plates, agreeing this was outstanding authentic Mexican food. Everyone declared the tortillas the best eaten. The hot sauce is REALLY REALLY hot; don't be brave.

Quick bite

By Rogz |

We had a quick lunch, and did after some queing like 10min. Was able to order and pick up our food. We find some seats eveb though it was busy time. We tried both Burritos and Tacos both with chicken. The tacos was great and the burritos good. By adding some rice to the burrito they get less wet. It is a big mealt though. So you get more then full. Prices are good, so if you are prepared to wait in line for 10-15 minutes you get a good meal for a fair price. It may look a little scruffy but that is part of the overall experience

Bring cash and be hungry

By Dave R |

After stopping at a couple of food trucks earlier in the week, we wanted a sit-down meal as good and authentic as we used to in Houston. This is the place, and as much as we were ready to wait in line, it disappeared as soon as we walked up. Generous portions, wonderful smells, polite people, and quick service plus very fair pricing make this someplace you have to try if you want great local food. !Muy sabroso!

Authentic Mexican don’t miss it. Bring cash

By C0dys_Dad |

I came by on a Sunday and they were closed came back in a Saturday and it was worth the second trip. I got a rolled taco and a burrito. Both awesome. A home made red sauce was deeply spicy and amazing. The atmosphere is rustic. There are tables and a maybe even a picnic table back in the second kitchen. But go for the food.

Great inexpensive place

By Clevlander |

This is a great local Mexican restaurant. It has a very simple menu and straightforward way to order. You stand in line grab a tray, order your food on the counter and pay cash. They have burritos, tacos made with chicken or pork, or tamales with beef. Two different types of beans and rice. A meal there will average 5 to 7 dollars including a soft drink. It's very good and very fast and after you get your tray you can find a place to sit among the tables. This is a local landmark and there's always a line out the door to get in. Recommended!

Pork

By Julianah M |

The menu is small...tacos, burritos, rice and beans. These tacos are the best I've ever had. Made with love. So flavorful and delicious. Get here early the line can be long everyone shares my sentiment.

Yum and Real!

By hallidaysa |

Expect a line and to pay cash. Very delicious and authentic. It's hole-in-the-wall with more seating than I expected, but very clean and good service!

Tasty Tortillas

By 610travelgal |

Friends in Coronado have eaten at Las Cuatro Milpas for many years and just introduced us to the restaurant. They were rewarded handsomely-we had no lines and found a place to park across the street. We liked the family atmosphere. Our two pork tacos were hot and tasty. The homemade salsa gave our meal the spice it needed. We ordered the large bowl of rice, beans, and chorizo instead of the smaller bowl. Next time we'll go smaller. We also added the salsa to the rice, beans, and chorizo bowl to give it more heat. Drinks are cheap and come from the cooler. Cash only but very reasonable

I just LOVE THIS place!!! It's NEVER disappointing... And they are very nice too! : )

By svintibbb |

It's NEVER disappointing... And they are all very nice too! : ) Been going here for years!!! Just wish they were open longer in the evening... but you can't HAVE EVERYTHING!!! : )

Truly good Mexican food at a great price

By FritzGoat |

The only problem is the popularity, but that means there's a good turnover and the food is very fresh. Parking can really be an issue; don't park at the senior center across the street or you'll be towed. I made the trek here about 2-3 times a month when I lived in San Diego; now I only stop by when in town on business. No problem with lines if you're coming by around 9:30 or so to pick up a dozen tamales to take back to the east coast; it's worth getting a later flight home to do this.

Some of the best Mexican Food Around

By 2goldensmom111 |

Every time we are in San Diego we visit this little restaurant in Barrio Logan. The line begins to form outside at 10:00am and continues all day. Catering is available. You get your food cafeteria style and watch it being made. I always have a small pinto beans and rice and rolled tacos. There are other items on the menu as well. Soft drinks and water are for sale. This restaurant is nothing fancy, but has been in this location for over 50 years. If you want some authentic delicious Mexican food, stop in at Las Cuatro Milpas.

Big wait, Authentic cuisine, Highly economical

By Benjamin Y |

We waited 30 minutes in the hot San Diego sun to get a look at the front door. Inside is a very rudimentary establishment. The menu is very small. But... That’s where the negativity ends. I tried one of everything. It was way too much food. By far. It cost 20 dollars for me and the wife. And we felt ashamed for being such gluttons. Heaps of food. So delicious. So authentic. Crazy cheap. Bring cash, bring your patience, bring your appetite.

The best Mexican food!

By AprilG981 |

My husband, two kids and I just enjoyed a delicious meal here yesterday. This is the best Mexican food in San Diego. We got a large chorizo with extra tortillas and tacos. It was all delicious! The tortillas are handmade and so amazing. It's very reasonably priced too. The four of us were full after we ate and we only spent $12.50. There is always a long line there, but it's not as bad if you get there early. We got there around 10:30am and only had to wait about 10-15 minutes.

In the land of never ending tacos, LCM stands apart

By Kidd1983 |

I lived everything about this place: the line that formed quickly on a Wednesday at lunch (demonstrating its assured awesomeness), lack of coherent menu and soup nazi feel order process. Don't get me wrong, everyone was very friendly, but your feel the distinct need to know what you want and get on with it when it's your turn. I felt no need to ponder "what's good here?" or worry about price. I intrinsically knew it would a be good (it showed - literally - as I watched everything being made in front of me). It was all cheap. I just listed a bunch of stuff I wanted and it magically appeared before me in mass quantity. If you have one stop in the Mexican food Mecca, make it here.

Authentic and delicious

By dd421 |

Hoping to see this place get a Certificate of Excellence in the future. Just amazing. Low-key, no-frills, order and sit down place. Neighborhood is a bit sketchy and parking was hard to find, but that wouldn't stop me next time. They were very nice to us and the food was amazing. Definitely will go back when in San Diego.

Quite good

By GNorbi |

I'm not quite familiar with San Diego but Las Cuatro Milpas seems to be in a sketchy neighbourhood that I wouldn't prefer to visit at night. This is probably the reason why they close at 3pm :) The restaurant seems very old and run-down but the long queue signals good Mexican food. We had rolled tacos and a burrito, while the former was great (albeit somewhat heavy as it's deep fried) the burrito was bland. The flour tortilla is probably home made as it was better than anywhere else both taste and texture-wise but the filling did not meet the expected standards. On the plus side, it's very inexpensive. I would visit this place again if I was close but I wouldn't go out of my way just to get here.

Not so Tipical Mexican Resturant

By JMareyna |

The place, the menu and the prices, are very limited. Don't be surprised if you have to make a 30 people line in the street, but it moves relatively fast. The Chorizo Beans are good and the tortillas are not the ones you are use to see. It's super cheap so you get what you pay for. The area is not nice; I would not go there after 6 PM.

This place is great to enjoy some real mexican food. You enter the restaurant and it is like you are in Mexico. Cheap food, and authentic. It was not easy to find, and when we arrived there, it was only take out because they were about to close. The surroundings didn't feel very safe.

A highlight of your visit

By viensEC |

I have been coming here since the 70s. As a resident of San Diego County, while many things change or exit the market, I can tell you that the quality of the food and "ambience" of LCM has remained remarkably consistent. The limited menu is always hot and quickly served, once you get to the front of the line. If you don't like waiting for the delicious food, avoid lunch hours and come early, or after 2PM. Great prices for great food !

The best California Mexican food bar none

By wxzzy |

I am a native San Diegan and this is where I do, like once a month, like withdrawals if I don't. I tell tourists this is the place to try. I take out of town guests here. I describe it thusls "Right off the freeway in Barrio Logan you will see a line of people of all races, creeds and colors united by their love of fried pork. The line starts every day and 8:00 AM and goes until they run out of food." NB, the rolled tacos are my least favorite thing on the menu. Beans and Rice and a tamale and folded tacos with a side of sour cream.

Great find in SD

Forget taqueria frank stay in SD and try las cuatro milpas, fantastic tacos and tamales, lively area and old schools charm

The Best Tacos

By Ken M |

I was born and raised in San Diego. I live in LA now but come to visit once or twice a year. Today I am leaving, but going to stop at Las Cuatro Milpas today. To me, its called Paunchos. Because when I was a kid, 60 years ago...the gentleman who owned and ran it with his wife, that was his name. I think his picture is up on the wall. At that time, it was kind of a little counter with red seats like an old deli. Anyway...i was curious...i did a search for "Best tacos in San diego" and I saw a list of all these fancy eateries that SD has now all around. Gourmet type looking type tacos. Give me a break. Those have to be paid advertisements. I have eaten tacos all over the world And all over LA. And I am here to tell you. These are the best tacos in the world IMO. There is no comparison. The other food is good too.

Try the pork tacos! So goooooood!

By KimPossibleMiami |

This place is definitely worth the wait! It did take us about 45 minutes to get our tacos on a Thursday at noon. But I would do it again in a heartbeat. By far some of the best tacos I've ever had in my life. So simple, but soooooo DELICIOUS! I would recommend the pork tacos over the chicken. As other people mentioned, it's cash only. And right now there is no place to sit and eat inside. We actually ended up eating on some steps nearby as we waited for our uber.

Old school since 1933

By Creeping_Death_LA |

We arrived and there was a line outside, I was wondering how long it would take to get inside. The line actually moves quickly because it's an old assembly line just like Chipotle. We ordered a carnitas and a bean & cheese burrito, it was pretty good, not the best but good. We sat in back where the ladies where very busy making fresh tortillas, always a great sign of authentic fresh food. I love going to old, beat up, authentic, turn of the century, and unrestored restaurants. This place delivers all of that, but if you are the froo froo type that must be in a clean and new building stay very far away from here, and let the rest of us enjoy eating our meal down memory lane.

Best Mexican food on earth

By TravelGeek26 |

This is my favorite place to get Mexican food in the world. I tell everyone to stop here. My favorites are the rice and beans, tamales, tacos, rolled tacos and tortillas. Did I miss anything? There will often be a line out the door, but the line moves fairly quickly and it is worth the wait! Tip: Get a dozen flour tortillas to go. Also the hot sauce, really is hot...be careful!

Totally worth the wait

By buffinjm |

When we came straight from the airport and parked, we were a little unsure about the neighborhood. My husband and kids were starving, so the hour wait was doubtful at first, but boy are we glad we toughed it out! The food was to die for, and everyone kept saying they would never be able to eat at our local places ever again. So bummed we don’t have a place like this near us in Northern Virginia!

"Best Mexican Comfort Food!"

By Daniel D |

Consistent with the quality of food. Simply my favorite flour tortillas I ever had! My kids loved the rolled tacos and beef tacos. Had a pork burrito that was to die for! Also had a bowl of beans with rice and a bowl of beans with rice and chorizo as seen in the picture, delicious topped with cilantro and diced onions. Prices are great. This place serves authentic mexican food cooked and served by abuelitas. Menudo served on Saturdays but you have to get there early because the batch goes quick. Restrooms are not that great. Wheelchair accessible. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

A hidden gem, but always with a long line of happy customers

By Stephen S |

This place has a very simple menu. Not a lot of choices, but what they do, they do well. Tamales, rolled or regular tacos, beans and rice, beans and rice with chorizo and egg, and the burrito. They have fresh tortillas (both corn and flour) that taste like heaven. I love to come here, wait in the obligatory line, and happily scarf down a carne burrito (simple burrito with pork and a few other ingredients) with their sauce (always good, but sometimes hotter than others) some onion and fresh cilantro they provide by the register. It has not changed that much in the 15 years I have been going there, but it is always good and filling. There is something about that carne burrito that I just crave for about a week after I eat it, so good. Don't sweat the line, it moves quickly, food is ready almost instantly and there is a ton of seating inside.

First time visit

By Christi C |

This restaurant was recommended by a friend of a friend and we were in the area so we checked it out. We had heard there would be a line, and there was. There were about 25 people in line ahead of us when we arrived in a Friday at around 12:15pm. The menu is simple. They offer tamales, rolled tacos, tacos, burritos, beans, rice, and homemade corn and flour tortillas. You can get chicken or beef and the beans can be regular or with chorizo. Everything is made right there. We ordered everything but the tamales. We got the beans without chorizo. So glad we came to check this out and waited in the long line. The food did not disappoint! Everything we had was delicious!

San Diego institution

By Reslimpan |

Las Cuatro Milpas is a San Diego institution. The long lines, especially on the weekends, would suggest you are in for a treat. However, you are not. The food is pretty average, the prices are competitive.

Authentic Mexican cuisine, very inexpensive, limited menu, WONDERFUL

By Dirk B |

This place is only open until 3 pm. So, late breakfast and lunch only. The line is 30 min on a typical day. The crowd tells it all. Every walk of life shows up to enjoy this wonderful authentic mexican restaurant. The rolled tacos are my favorite. The first time I ordered tacos and a burrito - I could not finish either one. The portions are HUGE, the prices are low. You order your food right there in the kitchen, they hand you your plate, then you pay and sit down. Amazing experience. Did I mention that the food is wonderful?

the place politicians, judges, and who's who eats

By K T |

no matter what your walk in life is...Las Cuatro Milpas is the real deal for old world Mexican food. The hand made tortillas are the best! All of there food is fantastic, my favorite being the beans, rice, and tamale...which comes with their tortillas...and don't forget their own made chili salsa. Fast, friendly, inexpensive eats. If you get there before the lunch crowd, you won't have to wait in the long lines down the block. They open from 8AM to 3PM, Monday to Saturday....busiest time is around the noon lunch crowd.

A. Great Find in Barrio Logan

By 2goldensmom111 |

You have to get there early to avoid the lines at this cute place near the Coronado Bridge. Locals and visitors alike come to eat in or to get take-out. The menu is small but everything is delicious. Hand made tortillas, rice and beans, tacos, etc., are all delicious. Family owned for many years and a go to place every time we visit San Diego.

Hole in the Wall, Great Food !!!!

By Geo G |

Sometimes you need to go out of your comfort zone to discover great places. This was my experience at Las Cuatro Milpas. I knew it was going to be good when I saw the line outside. The line moved fast, so don't let it scare you. The menu seems to change daily, so they don't have a lot of variety, but what they have is wonderfully delicious. This place will be a San Diego regular from now on.

A must go, and go again...

By Kipmeister |

Under the Coronado Bridge in Barrio Logan is a Great find. Their tacos and tamales are the best. Limited choices, but when something is consistent & hits "that" taste bud you don't need a lot of choices. I've ordered almost the same thing for "over" 40 years and am sure that the people in the LINE do the same thing. There is "ALWAYS" a line from 10AM to 3PM (they close "promptly" at 3PM. The atmosphere is "scruffy" & the area is "sketchy" but don't let that deter you. Maybe this appearance is an "atmosphere" . It's an experience you will repeat...

Unlike any other

By Marc M |

This is not your Americanized Mexican food. They serve the same limited, but delicious menu, they have served for decades. Great tortillas, delicious rice & beans, authentic tamales, and tacos done right with no gimmicks. The long line and no frills interior decor just add to the experience. If you want something different in an authentic kind of way, this place does not disappoint.

Too good to be true

By lisapF1459DM |

This place is cash only so make sure you have enough $$. The lines are long but the times goes by fast. The food is fresh and delicious. Customer service is not great but you're there for the food. Don't pass the hidden secret. Simply delicious!

great basic mexican value

By Captcaffeine |

If you go after 11:30 in the morning prepare to stand in line for wonderful basic Mexican food. From the rice and bean soup-medium is enough to the rolled tacos to the muchasas, there is NO bad choice.

"Torillas that make you say MMMMMMMM"

By Ahems |

We are always looking for Great Mexican food and we found it here! This place is great and may have the best tortillas we have ever had!!!!!!! The only down side NO CARNA ASADA only pork and chicken! What a bummer this could have been in the top five of all time only if.... Anyway I digress, the beans and rice- excellent, the burritos- good and the tortillas- incredible! Go and enjoy the real deal!

GREAT experience!!

By rduinc |

We were driving in this area looking for a place to eat and this place with a very, very long line caught our eye. Glad we got in line because that actually moved pretty quick, and the food was simply incredible. There is a limited menu, which is part of why the line moves quick, but everything is home made and deliscous. It is cash only, so become prepared. There is picnic table seating inside and you find your own place but there is plenty of seating. While eating, you can watch the food being made which was very interesting watching the very old equipment.

Great Uber Driver Rec

By tedact |

We found this place from our Uber driver. It is very local and good. They serve through a line style and you can watch outside through the window as they make the tortillas. Everyone seems to know what they want and the line moves quickly, be prepared. There may be a line outside, but it moves quickly. Great food , great experience.

Authentic Mexican beans and hand-made FRESH tortillas.

By Vivian P |

These beans will change your life. You will never eat the mashed-up tasteless, bland mush that Americans call Mexican re-fried beans. If you are lucky enough to get a tamale. BUY 12!!

The Line Stretches out the Door...

By HighC-AK |

If you want a real taqueria experience then Las Cuatro Milpas is it. You order your food inside the door and take your tray to one of the many seating areas. The tamales are good and everything is tasty and authentic. The neighborhood is getting better. Go and enjoy the experience with everyone else.

home down cooking

By eddie27c |

As good as Mexican food gets for 60+ years! They have a fixed menu of chorizo & beans, rice, tacos and burritos. If you're timing is right you can take some of their tortillas home with you. Be aware when ordering because I see first timers order too much food. The tacos are my favorite. Actually everything their is so tasty. ENJOY!!!!! Get there before they close which is at their discretion around 2:30 and depending on the line. The line goes fast so get in it and wait for some great food.

Great Mexican Food

By Carl J D |

I don't eat a lot of Mexican but this was well worth the exception. There is a long line to get in but it is worth it. Very inexpensive and cooked right in front of you to order. They make there own breads in the back so you can't get any fresher than that.

Authentic Mexican street food!

By Cecilia S |

Authentic Mexican tacos at its finest. It ain’t fancy. In fact, it’s almost like you’re heading to your in-laws house for dinner in TJ. It’s not exactly in the safest part of town either, so they are only opened for breakfast/lunch. The line is typically out of the door, but it moves pretty quickly. Once you order what you want from their simple and straightforward menu, you can head over into the dining area, grab a seat, and chow down. The space is actually larger than I expected, and there’s plenty of seating. Food wise, O-M-G, that carnitas taco is just bomb dot com. With a small side of chorizo rice and beans and fresh made flour tortillas, mm mm mm, I was pretty much in comfort food heaven. If you want simple, no frills, and delicious authentic tacos, this is the place to be! P.S. Good luck with parking and make sure you leave all your valuables out of plain site!

Wow!!!!

By mikechang680 |

Amazing food with a simple yet comprehensive menu. We did the tacos, tamale, fresh tortillas and their pork rolled tacos. So worth the wait in line. Guys in Bentleys pulling up to eat. Lol.

must try

By Francesca T |

this place is a must go if you like Mexican food, you can find all different people waiting in line from the Mexican guy to the well known lawyer...don't miss it

Great, but non-meateaters beware

By TKL3 |

I'm not the best person to be reviewing this place, as I could not sample their food adequately. As a pescetarian (I've given in to the neologism, sorry), the only thing I could order was the rice and beans. That being said, it was fabulous. It truly was the Mexican version of the dish--more of a stew of beans and Spanish rice, and a lot of it. The fire toasted tortillas were soft, pliable and delicious. My omnivorous companions were delighted by the rolled tacos (a combo of chicken and pork), and my wife almost cried when she had the tamales (it had been years since she had one that good). As so many reviewers have pointed out, the line goes quickly (and if you get there by 11:30 for lunch, it is pretty short). Once you step in, you will feel like you have crossed the border. You will be in the assembly line. Tell the nice mujeres what you want and slide down until you get to your trays. Grab your own condiments (cilantro, tomatoes, onions). Find a table and sit down and stay awhile. Oh, did I mention that it was easy on the wallet?

Awesome. Yum yum

By Leroy J |

Fabulous Mexican food. Very authentic and true. Just be careful how much you order. The portions are quite large. The tortillas are fabulous.

The Real Deal!!!

By Sendairocks |

We went down early (10:30 a.m.) to get our Mexican food fix. We had never been before, but were chaperoned by our nephew. We had to wait in a short line, that was much longer by the time we had finished. The food was AMAZING! My Japanese mom, who doesn't particularly care for Mexican food, LOVED absolutely everything she tried. And we tried it all! It is great to watch the staff make the tortillas, tacos....literally everything, just before it is cooked. By the time you get your order, a table is open for you to sit. We fed nine people for about $60. Pretty inexpensive, but so tasty. We had enough to take home too! The leftovers fed two more people for dinner that night. The area is sketchy, but we never felt threatened, or unsafe. It is worth it for the delicious food. I will definitely go there anytime I am even near San Diego!

The refried beans with chorizo and chicken taco combination

By jerrychen777 |

It was the perfect lunch; a delightful and flavorful chicken taco with fresh lettuce and goat cheese housed in a deep fried corn tortilla and a bowl of their authentic refried beans with ground chorizo, topped with chopped onions and cilantro. To further enhance the taco and beans, I doused it with an oily and spicy salsa that is really unique. I've been up and down Mexico but have never had this oily salsa but here in Las Cuatro. When I finished them, I was ready to take a nap. Two Thumbs Up ladies and gentlemen !!! Ready to try the burrito this week.

Very mexican

By claudiooooo |

No fancy food. Just real mexican. We've tried the chicken burrito and was fantastic. The chorizo with beans was great. The taco with beef had a weird taste a bit distasteful. We did enjoy the authentic atmosphere. It's worth a visit you'll enjoy it.

Great local mexican place

By Matt B |

I had read some good reviews about this place, and also heard that there was usually a wait. I went during a conference when most of the AM topics were not interesting to me. Worth playing hooky for after eating here. I'll start by saying there was some miscommunication with my order, and ended up not quite getting everything I intended, but worked out fine anyway. When I arrived, there was a short line. It moved quite quick, and didn't wait more than about 5 minutes. I intended to get the eggs/beans/chorizo and the homemade tortillas. Ended up not getting the eggs, but I think that was my mistake. Either way I was so full anyway, probably better. The chorizo/beans combo on the tortillas was delicious. Exactly what I was craving. I tend to favor corn over flour, and these tortillas were flour. However, as they were clearly homemade, they were quite tasty and I didn't miss the corn tortillas. The interior is basic, but people aren't coming for the decor (and I couldn't care less what it looks like if the food is good). They have the ordering at the counter down to a science. Definitely worth going, and intend to go again. On a side note, I walked there from Gaslamp. I'd do so during the day, but not at night (basically need to walk through a tent city of homeless) on the way.

Best mexican in San Diego

By jake |

Real deal mexican food... I've probably been to every taco shop in the city and this one is the best... authentic real deal mexican food if you like white washed mexican food this place is not for you

A missed luncheon treat since our move to Oregon.

By 275charlesw |

Often, while working in San Diego, I frequented this “local favorite.” On a recent trip to San Diego, I was able to ‘shoe horn' a luncheon here. It was so great to see several of my favorite servers; this is very telling: that when the same people have worked at a restaurant for a long time...a restaurant whose food one has loved...on any subsequent visit, the great food will STILL be great. And I was not disappointed - but instead rewarded - as the food WAS great (I can still taste it - yum!). Many warn about the heat in the salsa; use sparingly until one reaches their tolerance. Others say the salsa is too greasy; I tell them that it is greasy, so it will continue to slide down one’s throat, and - therefore - not burn a hole!? May you enjoy this place as I have.
